The talent agent was so struck by her voice that he signed her to an exclusive management contract, mortgaging his house to finance her debut album. By the 1990s, Dion was one of the English-speaking world’s biggest divas. The couple have three children: Rene-Charles born in 2001 and twins Nelson and Eddy born in 2010.
LOS ANGELES - “The Revenant,” a harrowing survival thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a 19th century fur trapper, topped the Oscars nominations list Thursday with 12 nods, including for best picture, actor and director. In second place was dystopian action film “Mad Max: Fury Road,” with 10 nominations, followed by space blockbuster “The Martian,” about an astronaut stranded on the Red Planet, with seven. The nominations, announced at a pre-dawn ceremony in Beverly Hills organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, sent Hollywood’s annual awards season into high gear. The race is now on for the coveted Oscars, to be handed out on February 28 at a star-studded ceremony hosted by comedian Chris Rock. Cher donates thousands of bottles of water to troubled Flint NEW YORK — Cher is donating water to the residents of Flint, Michigan, as the city struggles with a drinking water crisis linked to lead contamination. More than 180,000 bottles will be shipped to the city starting Monday, according to a statement Cher released to The Associated Press on Saturday. “This is a tragedy of staggering proportion and shocking that it’s
happening in the middle of our country,” the Oscar winner said. The city’s 100,000 residents haven’t had safe water to drink since 2014, when officials began drawing water from the Flint River as a cost-saving measure. However, the city did not treat corrosive water properly, which led to metal leaching from old pipes. The crisis prompted President

Poverty rate in Bali increases
THE CENTRAL Statistics Agency (BPS) Bali recorded an increase in poverty throughout 2015. In March, the poverty rate remained 4.47 percent but after that jumped to 5.25 percent in September. “Allegedly it is caused by the unemployment rate soaring as much as 1.37 percent in March to 1.99 percent in September 2015,” said the Head of the BPS Bali Region, Panusunan Siregar, when describing about the “Portrait of Bali Macro Development Indicators 2015 and Anticipation 2016”. Panusunan added that another cause is the business decrease in the agricultural and industrial sector. Actually this sector is the most easily cultivated. “Declining welfare level of farmers makes the sector becomes no longer attractive, especially among the young people,” he continued. Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, admitted to be apprehensive with the increase in the poverty rate in Bali. As a result, the Island of the Gods must get shifted from second position to fourth position in terms of the lowest poverty in Indonesia.

Jakarta attack toll rises to 8: police
JAKARTA - The death toll in the Jakarta extremist attack has risen to eight, including four civilian victims and four militants, after a wounded Indonesian bystander died overnight, police said Sunday. Police had earlier put the toll of victims from Thursday’s assault at two, but raised it with the latest death and confirmation that an Indonesian man originally suspected of being a militant was actually a civilian. The coordinated bomb and gun attack along the capital’s central thoroughfare has been claimed by
the Islamic State (IS) group. Indonesian authorities blame it on an IS faction made up primarily of Malay-speaking Indonesians and Malaysians involved in the extremist group’s ruthless fight for a self-proclaimed caliphate in Syria and Iraq. The Jakarta attack also left two dozen people injured -- including
some foreigners -- several of them in serious condition. “Another victim who was in a coma since the beginning died last night,” Jakarta police spokesman Muhammad Iqbal told AFP, confirming the latest death. He named him as Rais Karna, 37, an Indonesian who worked at a nearby bank and who died from severe gunshot wounds to the head. The fourth victim, who was initially thought to be an attacker, was identified as Sugito. Many Indonesians go by a single name.
Police previously confirmed a Canadian citizen was among the dead. All the others were Indonesian. Authorities in Southeast Asian countries with significant Muslim populations say hundreds of their citizens have gone to join the IS jihad in the Middle East, and have repeatedly warned that extremist violence could boomerang back home. arrested 12 people in raids across Indonesia, including a man they believe handled financing for the Jakarta attacks, money that authorities allege came from the Islamic State group. So far, the government gives more subsidies in the production process in the form of fertilizer, cattle assistance, paddy production tools and agricultural tools. But when the crops slumped, farmers even did not get anything, not to mention the lowest retail price of grain has been determined
by the government. As a result, farmers are unable to sell their crops at expensive price. “When they harvest, they are even unable to sell expensively. So, if this happens who wants to become a farmer, who is comfortable being a farmer? At the level of production, the farmers in Bali are actually productive, but at the level of harvest yield they do not get protection,” he explained. If there are subsidies of results, continued Parta, farmers will have more certainties in harvest and obtain a good price. Even if the crop fails, farmers will still be able to earn enough money. Subsidies of crops can be in the form of tax exemption of their farmland, the government should buy farmers’ crops at the price exceeding the market price, insuring and then making post-harvest technology. “The best is to buy the farmers’ agricultural product at the price exceeding the market price,” he said. Balinese Temple Ceremony
Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Cruises 2016: Big new ships, submarine trips, ‘voluntourism’
NEW YORK — Underwater sightseeing in a glass submarine, shopping with a chef for dinner ingredients and volunteering with locals: These are some of the new options this season for cruise passengers.
Also in 2016 from the cruise industry, Royal Caribbean launches the world’s largest ship, and a new ship from Carnival features a biking track suspended high above the water. And for cruisers with deep pockets, luxuries range from round-the-clock personal assistants to long-term leases for residences at sea. Crystal Cruises has just launched Crystal Esprit, a 62-guest yacht that offers among its excursions a ride in a submersible vessel. The underwater excursions take place near the Seychelles islands in winter and on the Adriatic Coast in spring and summer. The glass capsule holds two people and a captain. Thirty-minute rides are $599 per person. Later this year, Crystal launches a yacht for river cruising in Europe, Crystal Mozart, with four more river yachts in 2017. Crystal is also getting into the airplane business with charter flights on four jets connecting to trips by ship and on land. And later this year Crystal launches residences at sea, with long-term leases for staterooms on three new ocean vessels, prices to be determined. In June, Royal Caribbean launches what will be the world’s largest ship, Harmony of the Seas, with a capacity of 5,479 passengers. Harmony will feature the “neighborhood” areas already found on other Royal Caribbean ships, including Central Park and Boardwalk. Harmony will also have robot bartenders, a mini-golf course, surfing on a FlowRider machine, waterslides, a zip line and, for guests who need their every whim catered to, round-the-clock personal assistants called Royal Genies. Another new Royal Caribbean ship, Ovation of the Seas, debuts in April, designed primarily for service in China. Carnival Cruise Line launches its largest ship in May, Carnival Vista, which can carry 3,954 people based on two per cabin. Despite the price tag, the suite is already sold out for its entire first season. Viking, once known just for river cruises, is launching the second of its ocean-going ships, Viking Sea, in April, a sister ship to Viking Star, launched last year. Seabourn expects its first new ship in five years, Seabourn Encore, to be delivered in December for a January 2017 launch. The ship will have all-suite staterooms and a Thomas Keller restaurant. And Cunard is renovating the Queen Mary 2, adding staterooms for solo travelers and expanding the number of onboard kennels where guests are permitted to keep their dogs. The QM2 will be out of service for the redo from May 27 to June 21. Joint patrols to prevent terror acts thru waters of Buleleng
Burkina Faso begins 3 days mourning after al-Qaida attack OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso — Burkina Faso is beginning three days of national mourning after an attack by al-Qaida militants left at least 28 people dead. In a message broadcast to the nation, President Roch Marc Christian Kabore said the people of Burkina Faso must unite in the fight against terrorism. He also announced that security forces will be stepping up security checks at entrances to the capital, Ouagadougou, and other major towns, as well as along the country’s borders. The period of national mourning began Sunday, a day after Burkinabe and French forces ended a more than 12-siege at an upscale hotel in downtown Ouagadougou. When the gunfire and explosions finally stopped, authorities said 18 were killed in the hotel and 10 killed at a nearby cafe. The four attackers were also killed.(ap)

He added that the joint operation and patrol are regularly carried out by water police unit of the Buleleng Police, especially to oversee the actions of the crime such as fish bombing, coral reef bombing and the smuggling of goods through the waters of Buleleng. Vessels or boats without permission are examined in terms of their destination and identity. the Karangasem House of Representative because there has been no regulation and the company has no initial capital. According to Sutapa, the traditional harbor is urgently managed by an operator. It is important because it needs a responsible authority for safety. So far, the traffic of passengers mostly consisting of foreign tourists traveling to a number of small islands in NTB is very high. The traffic of crossing reaches 700-1,500 people. “The average traveler crossing through the traditional harbor by boat reaches 800 people per day. Most of them are foreign travelers, while local people are just a few,” added the Spokesperson of Regional Secretariat of Karangasem, Made Suparta, accompanying the visit of
the acting regent. Chairman of the Karangasem House of Representatives, Nengah Sumardi, not long ago justified that the potential revenue of the government of Karangasem is huge if the Padangbai traditional harbor management is handed over to government of Karangasem. From the information obtained, the ticket collection at Padangbai traditional harbor can obtain revenue as much as IDR 4 billion each year. Unfortunately, so far local government cannot manage it because the asset still belongs to central government and has not been submitted to the government of Karangasem district. BERLIN — Chancellor Angela Merkel’s migrant troubles have reignited in the new year but the German leader is sticking to her guns, insisting her country will manage the challenge and that diplomacy can bring solutions. Germany registered nearly 1.1 million asylum-seekers last year, and 2,000 to 3,000 are still arriving daily even in mid-winter. A surge of robberies and sexual assaults on New Year’s Eve in Cologne — and the fact that some of the suspects were asylum-seekers — have highlighted the difficulty of integrating so many newcomers. With pressure mounting for the government to manage the influx, Merkel’s Bavarian allies are once again pushing for a cap on asylumseekers. Public opinion toward refugees has been souring for months i n G e r m a n y, a l t h o u g h p o l l s suggest political support for Merkel’s conservatives is down only slightly. While Germany doesn’t hold a national election until late 2017, smaller votes this year — starting with three state elections in March — will offer a test of the mood. “The events of New Year’s Eve have again shone a spotlight

Within days, her government proposed legislation to make it easier to deport criminal foreigners. Iraq sends troops south to rein in crime, tribal disputes
BASRA, Iraq — An Iraqi official says Baghdad has sent security reinforcements to the southern Basra province to rein in violent crime and tribal disputes that have surged in recent months as troops have been off battling the Islamic State group in the country’s northwest. An army division and a police battalion were redeployed from southern Iraq in late 2014, creating a security vacuum in the oil-rich and overwhelmingly Shiite region, which is home to some 3 million people. The deputy head of Basra’s provincial council, Walid Gytan, said Sunday that the forces “are essential to maintain security in the province,” without elaborating. A security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to brief reporters, says the reinforcements include a tank regiment and a commando battalion.(ap)

BUSINESS China-led Asian infrastructure bank opens for business
BEIJING — A Chinese-led bank intended to finance railways and other cargo links throughout Asia opened for business at a ceremony led by President Xi Jinping. Representatives of 57 member countries of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank attended the ceremony Saturday, at which China pledged $50 million to a special fund to prepare less developed countries for infrastructure projects. The United States and Japan are not members of the AIIB, which some see as a potential rival to the Western-led World Bank and International Monetary Fund. Washington has said it welcomes the additional financing for development but had expressed concern looser lending standards might undercut efforts by existing institutions to promote environmental and other safeguards. Chinese officials have said the bank will complement existing institutions and promised to adhere to international lending standards. The AIIB is intended to finance railways, cargo ports and other trade links. Its launch comes as Beijing is trying to extend its trade links with its Asian neighbors. Beijing has pledged to put up most of the bank’s initial $50 billion in capital and says that total will rise to $100 billion. Man accused of financing Jakarta attacks with IS funds arrested
JAKARTA - Indonesian police announced Saturday they had arrested a man they believe financed the deadly Jakarta attacks, alleging the suspect received the funds from the Islamic State group (IS). National police chief Badrodin Haiti said 12 suspects had been detained in nationwide raids since Thursday’s attacks, including one accused of bankrolling the suicide bombings and shootings that left seven dead. “One of the people detained had received financial transfers from ISIS to fund the operation,” he told reporters, using another acronym for IS. Police had suspected a broader extremist network helped carry out the attacks, warning a larger team of planners, financiers and bomb assemblers was likely still at large. The attack has been claimed by
IS, which has ruthlessly carved out a self-proclaimed caliphate in Syria and Iraq, and Indonesian police have more specifically blamed a Southeast Asian affiliate of the group known as Katibah Nusantara. Haiti said the amounts transferred were “quite large” and channelled through Indonesian extremist Bahrun Naim, believed to be the founding member of Katibah Nusantara and who police say orchestrated the Jakarta attacks from Syria. The twelve arrested in the sweep across Java and Indonesia’s half of Borneo were associates of Naim, the police chief said. Pistols, bullet
clips and mobile phones were also seized in the raids, along with plans detailing future attacks. Amid the raids more details have emerged about the brazen assault, with police confirming a suicide bomber struck a Starbucks cafe and officially releasing the identities of the attackers and their victims. The dual Algerian-Canadian citizen shot by militants was named as Tahar Amer-Ouali, while the sole Indonesian killed, Rico Hermawan, was being fined by the police when the attackers blew up a traffic post. Twenty-six others were injured during the 21-minute assault, including six police officers and a security guard who remains in a coma. However other details remain unclear, with authorities still strug-
gling to provide concrete information on the shock attack that unfurled in broad daylight on a busy street. Police left open the possibility that one of the five alleged militants responsible for the rampage might have been a civilian caught in the cross hairs, stressing their investigation into his identity was incomplete. Claims that dual suicide bombers were responsible for the grisly carnage at a police post have also come into doubt, with investigators now speculating hand-held explosives could have been used. More certain was the identification of Afif, the attacker in blue jeans, black t-shirt and a black hat pictured preparing to raise his handgun in a photo that rippled across Indonesia’s hyperactive social media universe.
He was released from prison last year after serving a seven-year sentence for involvement in an Islamic paramilitary camp, and had been recruited to IS by Naim, the believed ringleader of Katibah Nusantara. Another of the militants identified was also a former convict, police said, with little known about the other two confirmed attackers. If confirmed to be the work of Katibah Nusantara, which is made up primarily of Malay-speaking Indonesians and Malaysians, it would mark the first violence in Southeast Asia by the group. Authorities across the region with significant Muslim populations have repeatedly warned of the potential for their citizens to return from fighting alongside IS in the Middle East and carry out violence at home. Thursday’s bloody violence left two people and the five attackers dead, but the bigger concern for many residents remained the daily struggle to get ahead. The smoke had barely cleared after the attacks, claimed by the Islamic State group, before Jakarta’s heaving metropolis quickly returned to its bustling self -- with ubiquitous food vendors re-emerging at the site just a couple hours later to sell afternoon snacks. Motorbike taxi driver Asrul, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, said he was nearly hit in the crossfire of the shootout between attackers and police in a busy area of shopping malls and embassies, but didn’t stopped seeking fares in the area. “I could not make any money yesterday because of the attack, if I don’t work today how will I feed my family?” he said. Social media-mad Indonesia is estimated to have one of the world’s largest populations of Twitter users, who were quick to post about the attack. Tweeters denounced terrorism, with hashtags such as “We Are Not Afraid” surging to the top of global trending lists in a symbol of defiance. But Indonesian attention has proven easily diverted by lighter subjects, such as viral photos of a hunky gun-wielding Jakarta policeman involved in the response to the crisis and who has become a national heartthrob. Another widely posted image was of a satay peddler who stubbornly kept fanning his coal fire just 300 feet (91 metres) from the attack site, later saying he was afraid his cart might be stolen.

Rouhani: All happy about deal except Israel, US hard-liners
TEHRAN, Iran — Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said Sunday that the official implementation of the landmark nuclear deal has satisfied all parties except radical extremists, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged that Israel would remain vigilant to ensure that Iran was not violating its commitments. Speaking before the parliament in comments broadcast live on state television, Rouhani said, “In (implementing) the deal, all are happy except Zionists, warmongers, sowers of discord among Islamic nations and extremists in the U.S. The rest are happy.” Rouhani said the deal has “opened new windows for engagement with the world.” A strong supporter of the agreement, Rouhani sent out a celebratory tweet calling it a “glorious victory” late Saturday night while the speeches in Vienna were still taking place. Rouhani also said the deal was a win for all negotiating parties and all factions inside Iran. “Nobody has been defeated in the deal neither inside the country nor the countries that were negotiating with us,” he said, referring to the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany. Netanyahu meanwhile maintained his strong opposition to the deal. Speaking at his weekly Cabinet meeting, he said, “The Israel policy remains as it was — not
to allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon.” Netanyahu was a strong public opponent of the negotiations and drew the ire of the Obama administration last year by speaking in front of the U.S. Congress in an attempt to prevent the agreement. On Sunday he repeated his contention that the deal will strengthen and embolden Tehran, leading to greater regional instability. “What is clear is that Iran will now have more resources to dedicate to their terrorism and aggression in the region and in the world, and Israel is prepared to deal with any threat,” he said. Rouhani said Iran should use the expected influx of money and investments to spark the “economic mutation” of the country, creating jobs and enhancing quality-of-life for Iranian citizens. Iran has been suffering double-digit inflation and unemployment rates for years. He also said Iran now needs political tranquility to best benefit from the new economic reality. “All should prevent any domestic

Israeli police: Graffiti sprayed on Jerusalem church
JERUSALEM — Israeli police discovered Hebrew graffiti Sunday on the walls of a famous Jerusalem church, in what appears to be the latest vandalism attack by extremist Jews. Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said anti-Christian slogans were found on the outer walls of the Dormition Abbey, a Benedictine monastery located just outside Jerusalem’s Old City and where Christian tradition says the Virgin Mary died. The graffiti included threats of violence, messages degrading Jesus and a call for Christians to “go to hell.” Nikodemus Schnabel, the Dormition Abbey spokesman, said the graffiti bore “very radical messages.” Police are investigating but suspicion immediately fell on Jewish extremists who have for years vandalized Palestinian property, as well as mosques, churches, the offices of dovish Israeli groups and even Israeli military bases. The mercurial Kyrgios lit up last year’s tournament with a dizzying run to the quarter-finals but was lashed in mainstream and social media for yelling expletives and smashing racquets. He remains under huge scrutiny and a suspended ban from the ATP after a lewd remark aimed at Stan Wawrinka during a match last year. The 20-year-old has steered clear of controversy leading up to this year’s tournament but Tomic has been under fire for retiring midway through his quarterfinal match at the Sydney International, citing sickness. Having once earned the nickname ‘Tomic the Tank Engine’ after being accused of giving up in a U.S. Open match, the 23-year-old was sensitive to the criticism, given a swathe of withdrawals that hit the tournament. “Other players did pull out that week, were also ill,” Tomic told reporters at Melbourne Park on Sunday. “Unfortunately with me, given my bad reputation in the past, things have happened. I think (the attention) always gets a little
too big. “I think ... just being sick, maybe a little bit disappointing the way that you guys sort of ... went about it.” With Kyrgios seeded 29th, Australia have two seeds in the men’s draw for the first time in over a decade. Former U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur is the lone local seed in the women’s draw at a tournament where she has often battled crippling nerves. Villarreal draws to pull level with Real Madrid in Liga
BARCELONA, Spain — Villarreal’s scoreless draw with Real Betis was good enough for it to provisionally pull level on points with third-place Real Madrid in the Spanish league on Saturday. Villarreal’s best scoring opportunity came just moments after kickoff of the evenly contested match at El Madrigal Stadium, when Roberto Soldado sent the ball off the far upright. Fourth-place Villarreal’s winning streak ended at six straight rounds, but it equaled Madrid on points, and moved within four points of leader Atletico Madrid and two points of Barcelona before all three title rivals play on Sunday. “Those were a lot of victories, but they covered up how we were playing. We need to rest our minds and then get back to training,” Villarreal coach Marcelino Garcia said. “This can help us to improve.” Elsewhere, Celta Vigo got two goals from John Guidetti to earn a 4-3 win after weathering bottom-side Levante’s spirited second-half rally, while Sevilla downed Malaga 2-1. He made it 11 league goals this season just two minutes later when Sevilla struck on the break, this time using a deft flick with the inside of his boot to beat Kameni. Charles scored in the second half for Malaga, which had its first defeat in eight rounds. “This team needs confidence and Kevin showed that today,” Sevilla manager Unai Emery said. “He has a knack for scoring and it’s our job to create chances for him.” Sevilla’s Vicente Iborra and Malaga’s Arthur Boka were sent off for two yellow cards each. LONDON — FIFA presidential candidate Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim al Khalifa dismissed a rival’s complaint about his election conduct as “entirely inaccurate” and warned on Saturday against public squabbling. Prince Ali bin al-Hussein has accused Bahrain’s Sheikh Salman of a “blatant attempt to engineer a bloc vote” by signing a pact between the Asian Football Confederation he leads and its counterpart in Africa. Jordanian federation president Prince Ali on Friday asked FIFA’s election watchdog to investigate whether election rules were broken. But in a statement on Saturday, titled “An unnecessary spat between FIFA candidates,” Sheikh Salman insisted the AsiaAfrica pact was being worked on months before he decided to run in the Feb. 26 election to replace Sepp Blatter. “I am astonished about my friend’s comments, which are wholly dismissed and entirely inaccurate,” Sheikh Salman said. The mercurial Kyrgios lit up last year’s tournament with a dizzying run to the quarter-finals but was lashed in mainstream and social media for yelling expletives and smashing racquets. He remains under huge scrutiny and a suspended ban from the ATP after a lewd remark aimed at Stan Wawrinka during a match last year. The 20-year-old has steered clear of controversy leading up to this year’s tournament but Tomic has been under fire for retiring midway through his quarterfinal match at the Sydney International, citing sickness. Having once earned the nickname ‘Tomic the Tank Engine’ after being accused of giving up in a U.S. Open match, the 23-year-old was sensitive to the criticism, given a swathe of withdrawals that hit the tournament. “Other players did pull out that week, were also ill,” Tomic told reporters at Melbourne Park on Sunday. “Unfortunately with me, given my bad reputation in the past, things have happened. I think (the attention) always gets a little
too big. “I think ... just being sick, maybe a little bit disappointing the way that you guys sort of ... went about it.” With Kyrgios seeded 29th, Australia have two seeds in the men’s draw for the first time in over a decade. Former U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur is the lone local seed in the women’s draw at a tournament where she has often battled crippling nerves. Rouhani: All happy about deal except Israel, US hard-liners
TEHRAN, Iran — Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said Sunday that the official implementation of the landmark nuclear deal has satisfied all parties except radical extremists, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged that Israel would remain vigilant to ensure that Iran was not violating its commitments. Speaking before the parliament in comments broadcast live on state television, Rouhani said, “In (implementing) the deal, all are happy except Zionists, warmongers, sowers of discord among Islamic nations and extremists in the U.S. The rest are happy.” Rouhani said the deal has “opened new windows for engagement with the world.” A strong supporter of the agreement, Rouhani sent out a celebratory tweet calling it a “glorious victory” late Saturday night while the speeches in Vienna were still taking place. Rouhani also said the deal was a win for all negotiating parties and all factions inside Iran. “Nobody has been defeated in the deal neither inside the country nor the countries that were negotiating with us,” he said, referring to the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany. Netanyahu meanwhile maintained his strong opposition to the deal. Speaking at his weekly Cabinet meeting, he said, “The Israel policy remains as it was — not
to allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon.” Netanyahu was a strong public opponent of the negotiations and drew the ire of the Obama administration last year by speaking in front of the U.S. Congress in an attempt to prevent the agreement. On Sunday he repeated his contention that the deal will strengthen and embolden Tehran, leading to greater regional instability. “What is clear is that Iran will now have more resources to dedicate to their terrorism and aggression in the region and in the world, and Israel is prepared to deal with any threat,” he said. Rouhani said Iran should use the expected influx of money and investments to spark the “economic mutation” of the country, creating jobs and enhancing quality-of-life for Iranian citizens. Iran has been suffering double-digit inflation and unemployment rates for years. He also said Iran now needs political tranquility to best benefit from the new economic reality. “All should prevent any domestic
and foreign trivialities that thwart us,” he said. “Any irrelevant and diverting dispute is against national expedience.” Rouhani said his country needs up to $50 billion in foreign investment per year to reach its goal of eight-percent annual growth. For Iran, long out in the economic cold over its contested atomic program, implementing the nuclear deal will be a welcome thaw. More than $30 billion in assets overseas will become immediately available to the Islamic Republic. Official Iranian reports have set the total amount of frozen Iranian assets overseas at $100 billion. A European oil embargo on Iran will end. Already, some 38 million barrels of oil are in Iran’s floating reserves, ready to enter the market, according to the International Energy Agency. Celebrations in Tehran were relatively muted at first, because the Vienna implementation announcement came well after midnight. But on Sunday, many Tehran residents expressed optimism about Iran’s future economic prospects. “Unbelievable! This is a day without sanction after years,” said taxi driver Reza Khoei. “I lost my technical job in a petrochemical complex in south of Iran because of the damn sanctions.” (ap)

Israeli police: Graffiti sprayed on Jerusalem church
JERUSALEM — Israeli police discovered Hebrew graffiti Sunday on the walls of a famous Jerusalem church, in what appears to be the latest vandalism attack by extremist Jews. Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said anti-Christian slogans were found on the outer walls of the Dormition Abbey, a Benedictine monastery located just outside Jerusalem’s Old City and where Christian tradition says the Virgin Mary died. The graffiti included threats of violence, messages degrading Jesus and a call for Christians to “go to hell.” Nikodemus Schnabel, the Dormition Abbey spokesman, said the graffiti bore “very radical messages.” Police are investigating but suspicion immediately fell on Jewish extremists who have for years vandalized Palestinian property, as well as mosques, churches, the offices of dovish Israeli groups and even Israeli military bases. The socalled “price tag” attacks seek to exact a cost for Israeli steps seen as
favoring the Palestinians. That attacks have prompted widespread condemnation and pledges by Israel’s government to get tougher on Jewish vigilantes. Israel’s Minister of Public Security, Gilad Erdan, said he has instructed police to give the vandalism case top priority. “We will not allow anyone to undermine the coexistence between religions in Israel. We will show zero tolerance to whomever harms the democratic foundations of Israel and its freedom of religion and we will apprehend those who carried out this heinous act,” he said. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also condemned the vandalism. The Benedictine abbey is a popular site for pilgrims and tourists. It has been damaged several times in recent years. The vandals are believed to be from the same group of Jewish extremists who have carried out a spate of similar attacks in recent years in retaliation for Palestinian attacks or to protest what they perceive as pro-Palestinian policies by the government. BUSINESS China-led Asian infrastructure bank opens for business
BEIJING — A Chinese-led bank intended to finance railways and other cargo links throughout Asia opened for business at a ceremony led by President Xi Jinping. Representatives of 57 member countries of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank attended the ceremony Saturday, at which China pledged $50 million to a special fund to prepare less developed countries for infrastructure projects. The United States and Japan are not members of the AIIB, which some see as a potential rival to the Western-led World Bank and International Monetary Fund. Washington has said it welcomes the additional financing for development but had expressed concern looser lending standards might undercut efforts by existing institutions to promote environmental and other safeguards. Chinese officials have said the bank will complement existing institutions and promised to adhere to international lending standards. The AIIB is intended to finance railways, cargo ports and other trade links. Its launch comes as Beijing is trying to extend its trade links with its Asian neighbors. Beijing has pledged to put up most of the bank’s initial $50 billion in capital and says that total will rise to $100 billion. Man accused of financing Jakarta attacks with IS funds arrested
JAKARTA - Indonesian police announced Saturday they had arrested a man they believe financed the deadly Jakarta attacks, alleging the suspect received the funds from the Islamic State group (IS). National police chief Badrodin Haiti said 12 suspects had been detained in nationwide raids since Thursday’s attacks, including one accused of bankrolling the suicide bombings and shootings that left seven dead. “One of the people detained had received financial transfers from ISIS to fund the operation,” he told reporters, using another acronym for IS. Police had suspected a broader extremist network helped carry out the attacks, warning a larger team of planners, financiers and bomb assemblers was likely still at large. The dual Algerian-Canadian citizen shot by militants was named as Tahar Amer-Ouali, while the sole Indonesian killed, Rico Hermawan, was being fined by the police when the attackers blew up a traffic post. Twenty-six others were injured during the 21-minute assault, including six police officers and a security guard who remains in a coma. However other details remain unclear, with authorities still strug-
gling to provide concrete information on the shock attack that unfurled in broad daylight on a busy street. Police left open the possibility that one of the five alleged militants responsible for the rampage might have been a civilian caught in the cross hairs, stressing their investigation into his identity was incomplete. Claims that dual suicide bombers were responsible for the grisly carnage at a police post have also come into doubt, with investigators now speculating hand-held explosives could have been used. More certain was the identification of Afif, the attacker in blue jeans, black t-shirt and a black hat pictured preparing to raise his handgun in a photo that rippled across Indonesia’s hyperactive social media universe.
He was released from prison last year after serving a seven-year sentence for involvement in an Islamic paramilitary camp, and had been recruited to IS by Naim, the believed ringleader of Katibah Nusantara. Another of the militants identified was also a former convict, police said, with little known about the other two confirmed attackers. If confirmed to be the work of Katibah Nusantara, which is made up primarily of Malay-speaking Indonesians and Malaysians, it would mark the first violence in Southeast Asia by the group. Authorities across the region with significant Muslim populations have repeatedly warned of the potential for their citizens to return from fighting alongside IS in the Middle East and carry out violence at home. JAKARTA - A day after deadly gun and bomb attacks rocked the Indonesian capital, Jakarta’s food peddlers, taxi drivers and shopkeepers returned to life as normal, more concerned with making a dollar than the Islamist assault. Thursday’s bloody violence left two people and the five attackers dead, but the bigger concern for many residents remained the daily struggle to get ahead. The smoke had barely cleared after the attacks, claimed by the Islamic State group, before Jakarta’s heaving metropolis quickly returned to its bustling self -- with ubiquitous food vendors re-emerging at the site just a couple hours later to sell afternoon snacks. Motorbike taxi driver Asrul, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, said he was nearly hit in the crossfire of the shootout between attackers and police in a busy area of shopping malls and embassies, but didn’t stopped seeking fares in the area. “I could not make any money yesterday because of the attack, if I don’t work today how will I feed my family?” he said. Social media-mad Indonesia is estimated to have one of the world’s largest populations of Twitter users, who were quick to post about the attack. Tweeters denounced terrorism, with hashtags such as “We Are Not Afraid” surging to the top of global trending lists in a symbol of defiance. But Indonesian attention has proven easily diverted by lighter subjects, such as viral photos of a hunky gun-wielding Jakarta policeman involved in the response to the crisis and who has become a national heartthrob. Another widely posted image was of a satay peddler who stubbornly kept fanning his coal fire just 300 feet (91 metres) from the attack site, later saying he was afraid his cart might be stolen.

Joint patrols to prevent terror acts thru waters of Buleleng
Burkina Faso begins 3 days mourning after al-Qaida attack OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso — Burkina Faso is beginning three days of national mourning after an attack by al-Qaida militants left at least 28 people dead. In a message broadcast to the nation, President Roch Marc Christian Kabore said the people of Burkina Faso must unite in the fight against terrorism. He also announced that security forces will be stepping up security checks at entrances to the capital, Ouagadougou, and other major towns, as well as along the country’s borders. The period of national mourning began Sunday, a day after Burkinabe and French forces ended a more than 12-siege at an upscale hotel in downtown Ouagadougou. When the gunfire and explosions finally stopped, authorities said 18 were killed in the hotel and 10 killed at a nearby cafe. The four attackers were also killed.(ap)

At the same time, it is also meant to prevent the acts of terror as occurred in Jakarta, so that we increase our routine patrol,” said Gelgel with permission from Chief of Buleleng Police, Harry Haryadi, Friday (Jan. 15). He added that the joint operation and patrol are regularly carried out by water police unit of the Buleleng Police, especially to oversee the actions of the crime such as fish bombing, coral reef bombing and the smuggling of goods through the waters of Buleleng. Vessels or boats without permission are examined in terms of their destination and identity. Now, there are at least five water police checkpoints namely at Sumberkima, Sangsit, Penarukan, Kampung Baru and Celukan Bawang. “Water Police unit of the Buleleng Police and personnel of the joint operation involved subdistrict police station and navy mutually help for safeguarding the marine waters in Buleleng,” he added. However, the draft on PT KS was rejected by
the Karangasem House of Representative because there has been no regulation and the company has no initial capital. According to Sutapa, the traditional harbor is urgently managed by an operator. It is important because it needs a responsible authority for safety. So far, the traffic of passengers mostly consisting of foreign tourists traveling to a number of small islands in NTB is very high. The traffic of crossing reaches 700-1,500 people. “The average traveler crossing through the traditional harbor by boat reaches 800 people per day. Most of them are foreign travelers, while local people are just a few,” added the Spokesperson of Regional Secretariat of Karangasem, Made Suparta, accompanying the visit of
the acting regent. Chairman of the Karangasem House of Representatives, Nengah Sumardi, not long ago justified that the potential revenue of the government of Karangasem is huge if the Padangbai traditional harbor management is handed over to government of Karangasem. From the information obtained, the ticket collection at Padangbai traditional harbor can obtain revenue as much as IDR 4 billion each year. Unfortunately, so far local government cannot manage it because the asset still belongs to central government and has not been submitted to the government of Karangasem district. BERLIN — Chancellor Angela Merkel’s migrant troubles have reignited in the new year but the German leader is sticking to her guns, insisting her country will manage the challenge and that diplomacy can bring solutions. Germany registered nearly 1.1 million asylum-seekers last year, and 2,000 to 3,000 are still arriving daily even in mid-winter. A surge of robberies and sexual assaults on New Year’s Eve in Cologne — and the fact that some of the suspects were asylum-seekers — have highlighted the difficulty of integrating so many newcomers. With pressure mounting for the government to manage the influx, Merkel’s Bavarian allies are once again pushing for a cap on asylumseekers. Public opinion toward refugees has been souring for months i n G e r m a n y, a l t h o u g h p o l l s suggest political support for Merkel’s conservatives is down only slightly. While Germany doesn’t hold a national election until late 2017, smaller votes this year — starting with three state elections in March — will offer a test of the mood. “The events of New Year’s Eve have again shone a spotlight
on the challenges we face, made them clear from a new side we had not viewed so far,” Merkel acknowledged. Within days, her government proposed legislation to make it easier to deport criminal foreigners. On the refugee influx itself, however, Merkel is standing firm — sticking to her much-criticized mantra that “we will manage it.” The woman chosen as Time’s person of the year insists that the solution is not to unilaterally close borders, but to work with reluctant European partners, Turkey and others to secure Europe’s frontiers and share the burden of hosting refugees. That has been the central plank of her approach even as the government has tightened policy at home — taking steps to make it easier to send migrants from Balkan nations home and making clear that not all Afghans will be allowed to stay. Whether Merkel will have any more success in Europe in 2016 than last year is questionable.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, an outspoken opponent of compulsory refugee quotas, said after the Cologne assaults that migrants can’t be integrated and “we don’t want what happened in Germany to happen here.” Merkel has pledged to reduce the influx but resisted calls to set a specific limit on the number of refugees Germany can take. She rallied her conservative party behind her stance a month ago, heading off calls for a cap by conceding that an unabated influx would “overburden” the country in the long run. But after a few weeks’ peace, her allies in the Bavaria-based Christian Social Union — her most prominent domestic critics over recent months — renewed their drive for tougher border controls and for a cap. The party’s leader, governor Horst Seehofer, suggested an annual figure of 200,000 asylum-seekers, and grumbling has resurfaced in Merkel’s own party. Yet Merkel isn’t budging and won’t say by when she aims to get the numbers down. “It wouldn’t be right to name the exact day,” she said. “We are working at high pressure on a sustainable reduction.” (ap)
Iraq sends troops south to rein in crime, tribal disputes
BASRA, Iraq — An Iraqi official says Baghdad has sent security reinforcements to the southern Basra province to rein in violent crime and tribal disputes that have surged in recent months as troops have been off battling the Islamic State group in the country’s northwest. An army division and a police battalion were redeployed from southern Iraq in late 2014, creating a security vacuum in the oil-rich and overwhelmingly Shiite region, which is home to some 3 million people. The deputy head of Basra’s provincial council, Walid Gytan, said Sunday that the forces “are essential to maintain security in the province,” without elaborating. A security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to brief reporters, says the reinforcements include a tank regiment and a commando battalion.(ap)

Cruises 2016: Big new ships, submarine trips, ‘voluntourism’
NEW YORK — Underwater sightseeing in a glass submarine, shopping with a chef for dinner ingredients and volunteering with locals: These are some of the new options this season for cruise passengers.
Also in 2016 from the cruise industry, Royal Caribbean launches the world’s largest ship, and a new ship from Carnival features a biking track suspended high above the water. And for cruisers with deep pockets, luxuries range from round-the-clock personal assistants to long-term leases for residences at sea. Crystal Cruises has just launched Crystal Esprit, a 62-guest yacht that offers among its excursions a ride in a submersible vessel. The underwater excursions take place near the Seychelles islands in winter and on the Adriatic Coast in spring and summer. The glass capsule holds two people and a captain. Thirty-minute rides are $599 per person. Later this year, Crystal launches a yacht for river cruising in Europe, Crystal Mozart, with four more river yachts in 2017. Crystal is also getting into the airplane business with charter flights on four jets connecting to trips by ship and on land. And later this year Crystal launches residences at sea, with long-term leases for staterooms on three new ocean vessels, prices to be determined. In June, Royal Caribbean launches what will be the world’s largest ship, Harmony of the Seas, with a capacity of 5,479 passengers. Harmony will feature the “neighborhood” areas already found on other Royal Caribbean ships, including Central Park and Boardwalk. Harmony will also have robot bartenders, a mini-golf course, surfing on a FlowRider machine, waterslides, a zip line and, for guests who need their every whim catered to, round-the-clock personal assistants called Royal Genies. Another new Royal Caribbean ship, Ovation of the Seas, debuts in April, designed primarily for service in China. Carnival Cruise Line launches its largest ship in May, Carnival Vista, which can carry 3,954 people based on two per cabin. Despite the price tag, the suite is already sold out for its entire first season. Viking, once known just for river cruises, is launching the second of its ocean-going ships, Viking Sea, in April, a sister ship to Viking Star, launched last year. Seabourn expects its first new ship in five years, Seabourn Encore, to be delivered in December for a January 2017 launch. The ship will have all-suite staterooms and a Thomas Keller restaurant. And Cunard is renovating the Queen Mary 2, adding staterooms for solo travelers and expanding the number of onboard kennels where guests are permitted to keep their dogs. The QM2 will be out of service for the redo from May 27 to June 21. Bali to cooperate with Australia in tackling emergency situation
DENPASAR - The Bali provincial government has expressed its intention to cooperate with the Australian government in tackling any emergency situation in anticipation of any terrorist acts, an official has said. Bali governor Made Mangku Pastika made the remarks during
a meeting with Australian Consul General Helena Studdert, adding that it was important to be prepared to tackle any emergency situation. This is all the more important as is the ability to anticipate an attack, particularly after the terrorist attack that occurred in Jakarta on Thursday.
Pastika stated that quick response teams and trained security personnel and medical workers were badly needed to deal with any eventuality, quickly bring back the situation to normal, help the victims as well as handle those in trauma. “We wish to send security per-

But when the crops slumped, farmers even did not get anything, not to mention the lowest retail price of grain has been determined
by the government. As a result, farmers are unable to sell their crops at expensive price. “When they harvest, they are even unable to sell expensively. So, if this happens who wants to become a farmer, who is comfortable being a farmer? At the level of production, the farmers in Bali are actually productive, but at the level of harvest yield they do not get protection,” he explained. If there are subsidies of results, continued Parta, farmers will have more certainties in harvest and obtain a good price. Even if the crop fails, farmers will still be able to earn enough money. Subsidies of crops can be in the form of tax exemption of their farmland, the government should buy farmers’ crops at the price exceeding the market price, insuring and then making post-harvest technology. “The best is to buy the farmers’ agricultural product at the price exceeding the market price,” he said. Balinese Temple Ceremony
Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Poverty rate in Bali increases
THE CENTRAL Statistics Agency (BPS) Bali recorded an increase in poverty throughout 2015. In March, the poverty rate remained 4.47 percent but after that jumped to 5.25 percent in September. “Allegedly it is caused by the unemployment rate soaring as much as 1.37 percent in March to 1.99 percent in September 2015,” said the Head of the BPS Bali Region, Panusunan Siregar, when describing about the “Portrait of Bali Macro Development Indicators 2015 and Anticipation 2016”. Panusunan added that another cause is the business decrease in the agricultural and industrial sector. Actually this sector is the most easily cultivated. “Declining welfare level of farmers makes the sector becomes no longer attractive, especially among the young people,” he continued. Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, admitted to be apprehensive with the increase in the poverty rate in Bali. As a result, the Island of the Gods must get shifted from second position to fourth position in terms of the lowest poverty in Indonesia.

Jakarta attack toll rises to 8: police
JAKARTA - The death toll in the Jakarta extremist attack has risen to eight, including four civilian victims and four militants, after a wounded Indonesian bystander died overnight, police said Sunday. Police had earlier put the toll of victims from Thursday’s assault at two, but raised it with the latest death and confirmation that an Indonesian man originally suspected of being a militant was actually a civilian. The coordinated bomb and gun attack along the capital’s central thoroughfare has been claimed by
the Islamic State (IS) group. Indonesian authorities blame it on an IS faction made up primarily of Malay-speaking Indonesians and Malaysians involved in the extremist group’s ruthless fight for a self-proclaimed caliphate in Syria and Iraq. The Jakarta attack also left two dozen people injured -- including
some foreigners -- several of them in serious condition. “Another victim who was in a coma since the beginning died last night,” Jakarta police spokesman Muhammad Iqbal told AFP, confirming the latest death. He named him as Rais Karna, 37, an Indonesian who worked at a nearby bank and who died from severe gunshot wounds to the head. The fourth victim, who was initially thought to be an attacker, was identified as Sugito. Many Indonesians go by a single name.
Police previously confirmed a Canadian citizen was among the dead. All the others were Indonesian. Authorities in Southeast Asian countries with significant Muslim populations say hundreds of their citizens have gone to join the IS jihad in the Middle East, and have repeatedly warned that extremist violence could boomerang back home.
