NEW YORK - Whatever Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is cooking these days is piping hot. Or so says People magazine, which on Tuesday named the wrestler-turned-actor this year’s “sexiest man alive.” Johnson, 44, whose famous catch phrase in the ring is, “Can you smell what The Rock is cooking?”, said learning about his new title put him in a quandary. “What went through my mind was just how cool and exciting it is,” Johnson told People. “And then I thought, ‘Wow, we’ve pretty much reached the pinnacle.’ I’m not quite too sure where we go from here.” Johnson rose to mainstream fame in the mid-1990s as a contender with World Wrestling En-
tertainment Inc and later became an actor and Hollywood producer. Johnson, who stands 6 feet 5 inches (1.96 meters) and weighs 245 pounds (111 kg), is known for his herculean appearance. In fact, he played the mythological character in the 2014 feature film “Hercules.” In his latest project, the actor is featured in the upcoming Disney animated film “Moana” as the voice of demigod Maui. “I’ve made big sweeping chang-

Indonesia police name Jakarta governor as blasphemy suspect
JAKARTA — Police on Wednesday named the Christian governor of the Indonesian capital as a suspect in a blasphemy investigation in a major test of the Muslim-majority nation’s reputation for religious tolerance. Earlier this month, Jakarta was rocked by a massive protest by conservative Muslims against the governor. One person died and dozens were injured in rioting. Hard-liners have threatened more protests if Ahok isn’t arrested. Police announced at a news conference that the popular governor, Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, cannot leave the country while the investigation is underway. However, they said he is not being detained because investigators and religious experts were sharply divided over whether the comments at issue were blasphemous. “After long discussions, we reached a decision that the case should be tried in an open court,” said National Police chief detective Ari Dono. The accusation of blasphemy against Ahok, an ethnic Chinese and Christian who is an ally of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, has galvanized Jokowi’s political opponents in the nation of 250
million where about 90 percent of people are Muslims, but five other religions are also recognized by the state. Jokowi canceled an official visit to Australia because of the rioting and has spent the past two weeks rallying the political, religious and security establishments behind him. It has also been a gift to politicians vying against Ahok, who is seeking a second term as Jakarta governor in elections in February. Among them is the son of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, a former president. Yudhoyono courted controversy by calling for Ahok’s arrest and saying he supported the Nov. 4 protest.
The Islamic Defenders Front, a vigilante group that wants to impose Shariah law, began demanding Ahok’s arrest after a video circulated online in which he joked to an audience about a passage in the Quran that could be interpreted as prohibiting Muslims from accepting non-Muslims as leaders. The governor has apologized for the comment. Bondres artist Nyoman Durpa passes away
BANGLI - The world of performing arts in Bali misses another figure. I Nyoman Durpa, a bondres artist and founder of the Dwi Mekar art studio, died on Tuesday morning (Nov.16). The departure of the artist figure that once ran as a candidate for the deputy regent of Bangli in 2010 now leaves sorrow and deep memories for his family at Satra village, Kintamani. A nephew of Durpa, Made Artana, when met at the funeral home at Satra village last Tuesday revealed that his uncle all this time having been living in Singaraja died on Tuesday around 06:00 at Kerta Husada Hospital in Singaraja. Durpa died from complication of diabetes, high blood pressure and tetanus having been suffered since the past few years. Prior to the last breath, Durpa was treated at local hospital since last Monday. After the death until 12:00 on Tuesday afternoon, his extended family was still waiting for the body of Nyoman Durpa to the funeral home. The artist initiated the icon of bondres mask named Susi remained to be temporarily held at Kerta Husada Hospital Singaraja because a piodalan or temple anniversary was being held at Bale Agung and Puseh temple of local village. “As planned, it will be sent home this afternoon (Tuesday), after the ritual at Bale Agung and Puseh Temple is closed,” said Artana accompanied by several relatives. Artana could not give confirmation. For this matter, he admitted that they have to make a discussion with his extended family in advance. Artana said that Nyoman Durpa who passed away at the age of 59 left a wife Kadek Mas Swandewi and a son I Gede Pande Satria Kusuma Yuda and two grandchildren. Besides, Durpa also left a number of awards for his dedication during becoming a bondres artist. His last award in the field of bondres was given by Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, about two weeks ago. “The deceased is considered as the only artist who has showed his dedication to the bondres art,” he said. Durpa who has begun to plunge into the world of performing art since the 1980s, last returned to home village at Satra about three months ago. “His last homecoming was when mapiuning or making notification ritual because he wanted to say prayers to Dalem Ganda Mayu temple,” he explained. In the eyes of his extended family, Durpa once becoming the running mate of Ida Bagus Ludra is known to be intelligent and humorous. The late Nyoman Durpa is also known to diligently pay devotional works and nurture young people at Satra village in the art field although most of his days were spent in Buleleng. “As a family, we have missed his figure. BANGLI - Residents of Batu Meyeh hamlet, Songan A, Kintamani, start to cultivate papyrus leaves into a variety of high-valued handicrafts. The skill of making crafts such as hat, purse, flower and jewelry boxes is obtained after a number of residents behind the hills got training facilitated by the government of Bangli recently. The Head of the Bangli Commerce and Industry Agency, Nengah Sudibia, said on Tuesday (Nov. 15) that the training of making handicrafts from papyrus leaf was given to some residents of Batu Meyeh because the area behind the hills has the potential of papyrus. His agency provided the training to make various crafts for the residents for four days. The coaches were brought in directly from Bona village, Gianyar. “Previously, local residents have been making some crafts such as jewelry box. Now, we add to their
skills with the provision of training to make the other crafts,” said Sudibya. Sudibya further added that other than taught to make crafts targeting the outside market, local artisans were also given training to make woven crafts targeting local market. The craft products specifically targeting the local market include the rice bag and small mats for ritual paraphernalia.”All this time, the ritual paraphernalia like mat and rice bag are mostly brought in from outside Bangli. Now, we train the artisans to meet the local
market,” he explained. In the meantime, to support the absorption of the craft products of Batu Meyeh, he claimed to be facilitating the marketing. So far, the craft products of Batu Meyeh are taken by collectors from Gianyar. In order that the craft products of residents behind the hill is becoming widely recognized by consumers, he will ask for the help of residents of Batu Meyeh and other Bangli residents staying outside the region like Kuta to participate in promoting them. He added that his agency also plans to invite a number of craftsmen behind the hills to make a comparative study to Lombok. Diet sodas might not raise diabetes risk
NEW YORK - Drinking colas and other sugary drinks is tied to an increased risk of so-called pre-diabetes, a precursor to fullblown disease, but diet soda is not, a recent study suggests. Previous studies on the link between diet sodas and diabetes have been mixed; some research pointing to a potential connection has suggested this relationship may be explained at least in part by soda drinkers being overweight or obese. In the current study, however, adults who routinely consumed at least one can of soda or other sugarsweetened beverages a day were 46 percent more likely to develop elevated blood sugar levels than people who rarely or never drink cola. “Emphasis should be placed on substituting sugar-sweetened beverages with water, unsweetened
teas, or coffee,” said senior study author Nicola McKeown, a nutrition researcher at Tufts University in Boston. “For daily consumers of sugary drinks, kicking the habit may be a difficult challenge, and incorporating an occasional diet soda, while increasing fluids from other sources, may be the best strategy to ultimately remove sugar-sweetened beverages from the diet,” McKeown added by email. Globally, about one in nine adults have diabetes, and the disease will be the seventh leading cause of death by 2030, according to the World Health
Organization. Most of these people have Type 2, or adult-onset, diabetes, which happens when the body can’t properly use or make enough of the hormone insulin to convert blood sugar into energy. People with blood sugar levels that are slightly elevated, but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis, are sometimes described as having “pre-diabetes” because many will go on to develop diabetes. In the current study, researchers examined data collected on 1,685 middle-aged adults over about 14 years. At the start of the study, none of the participants had diabetes or pre-diabetes. They were 52 years old on average and typically overweight. Participants completed question-
naires detailing what they ate and drank during the study period. Sugar-sweetened beverages were defined as colas and other carbonated beverages, as well as drinks such as lemonade and fruit punch. This didn’t include fruit juice. People who drank the most sodas – typically around six 12-ounce cans a week – had a much greater risk of developing elevated blood sugar levels than other participants after adjusting for factors such as age, gender and weight, researchers report in the Journal of Nutrition. Higher consumption of soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages was also associated with insulin resistance, a reduced ability to respond to the hormone insulin that is another risk factor for developing diabetes.
Even after accounting for changes in weight and other aspects of diet, the relationships between sugarsweetened beverages and these metabolic risk factors for diabetes persisted. Diet soda intake—defined as low-calorie cola or other carbonated low-calorie beverages— was not associated with elevated blood sugar or insulin resistance. The study doesn’t prove soda or sugary drinks cause diabetes. Another limitation of the study is that participants may not be representative of a typical U.S. adult, the authors note. People in the study were mostly white, middle aged and more likely to be women. They also tended not to be as overweight or thick around the middle as many U.S. adults, the authors point out. (rtr)
Huge study finds a billion people suffer from high blood pressure
LONDON - The number of people with high blood pressure has almost doubled in 40 years to over 1.1 billion worldwide, scientists said on Wednesday, with the burden of the condition shifting from the rich to the poor. In the largest study of its kind analyzing blood pressure in every nation between 1975 and 2015, the scientists said that it has dropped sharply in wealthy countries - possibly due to healthier diets and lifestyles - but risen in poorer ones. The increases are especially significant in Africa and South Asia,
the researchers said, and could be partly due to poor nutrition in childhood. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, puts extra strain on the blood vessels and major organs such as the heart, brain and kidneys. It is the world’s top cause of cardiovascular disease, which leads to strokes and heart attacks, and is estimated to cause 7.5 million deaths a year worldwide. Led by World Health Organization researchers working with hundreds of scientists internationally, this study covered blood pressure
measurements from nearly 20 million people and was published in The Lancet medical journal. In Europe, Britain had the lowest proportion of people with high blood pressure in 2015. South Korea, the United States and Canada had the lowest hypertension rates in the world. More than half the world’s adults with high blood pressure in 2015 lived in Asia, the study estimated. Some 226 million people in China have high blood pressure, it said, as do 200 million in India. “High blood pressure is no longer
related to affluence - as it was in 1975 - but is now a major health issue linked with poverty,” said Majid Ezzati, a professor at Imperial College London’s school of public health. He said that while he could not be sure of why the data showed high blood pressure as more of a problem in poorer countries, it may be partly due to overall better health and more consumption of fruit and vegetables in wealthy societies. In rich countries, the condition is also caught more frequently and earlier, and managed more effectively with medicines, Ezzati said.
Blood pressure is defined by two numbers - systolic pressure, which represents the force with which the heart pumps blood into the blood vessels, and diastolic pressure, a measure of the resistance to the blood flow in the body’s blood vessels. Both numbers are measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg). High blood pressure is defined as 140/90 mmHg or higher. The condition is caused by a number of factors including having a diet high in salt and low in fruit and vegetables, and not taking enough exercise. (rtr)

Council that Jembrana is currently faced with various problems. In addition to weather factor, it is also exposed to the problems of agricultural land conversion. To anticipate
the issue, he asked subak members to strengthen perarem or bylaw in each subak organization. Kembang also stated that in addition to land conversion, the other issues often faced by farmers, especially in wetlands, is weather factor including trade system.
Currently, he said that a lot of watershed starts to break down and they are even irrelevant at this time because the workmanship was so many years ago. This issue often triggers floods damaging agricultural crops so that farmers lose money. Not to mention, there are paddy fields of farmers that
do not get irrigation water. “To that end, through chief of subak (irrigation cooperative) group we strive together with subak members so that paddy fields that do not get water can also produce normally,” expected Deputy Regent Kembang. (kmb)

Pruning of shade trees gets attention for Baturiti road section
TABANAN - Rampant incidence of fallen trees and landslides occurred in some areas in Baturiti subdistrict received special attention from the Tabanan disaster mitigation agency (BPBD) and sanitation and landscaping agency (DKP). On Tuesday (Nov. 16) a number of joint personnel from relevant agencies conducted pruning of shade trees that are vulnerable to uproot during rainy season. The target was the main DenpasarSingaraja road section precisely at Perean road section to Luwus, Baturiti. The Head of DKP Tabanan, I Wayan Sugatra, said the activity continued similar activities carried out the previous week. He recognized the route of Baturiti area, especially in the main line of
Denpasar-Singaraja road section, is still very prone to disaster. Moreover, the path to the tourist area is crowded with passing motorists. “Many shade trees at this point have died because they are flayed by the public. On that account, they are prone to collapse,” he said. Pruning activities, said Sugatra, is carried out by a joint team because it is crucial. A joint team comprising the BPBD and DKP as the parent team was assisted by the officers from the transportation agency, municipal police, police and the military. “It is easier for us to anticipate traffic because it is indeed very crowded,” he said. Sugatra recognized that shade tree pruning activities along the main route between Denpasar and Singaraja applied a priority scale.
“We are targeting the areas considered more vulnerable. Thankfully we can reduce the incidence of disasters related to greening in the main line,” he said. In the meantime, the shade tree pruning at Denpasar-Singaraja road section was conducted by the BPBD officers by teaming up with third parties. Just for information, Baturiti subdistrict is one of the subdistricts belonging to danger zone of disaster, such as fallen trees and landslides. Moreover, high rainfall accompanied with high winds had caused landslides and fallen trees in some areas in Baturiti subdistrict. France, UN tell Trump action on climate change unstoppable

DENPASAR - Stages of Buleleng regent election will continue to run as specified even though the independent candidate pair Dewa Nyoman Sukrawan-I Gede Dharma Wijaya (Surya package) is still not satisfied and appealing to the state administrative court (PT-TUN) in Surabaya. The appeal was made after Surya package was declared to lack for 47 supports pursuant to the results of re-verification in the five regions. “Electoral Commission respects to the legal process because it indeed becomes the right of the participants, and we will follow the process. Hopefully, there would be an immediate good, democratic and acceptable resolution to all parties,” said Chairman of the Bali Electoral Commission, Dewa Kade Wiarsa Raka Sandi, when met in Denpasar, Monday (Nov. 14). Raka Sandi added that the commission will wait for the verdict on the appeal of the Surya package to the state administrative court. This Buleleng electoral dispute is expected to be decided objectively and clearly in accordance with the mechanisms or conditions. If the state administrative court allowed the appeal, the commission is obliged to implement the court’s decision. “I observe that the disputes all this time in the Buleleng supervisory board, there is a demand for reverification. If I am not mistaken, at least they claimed to do it at 14 villages, and then only five villages were granted. I do not know because of having not received any copy of the lawsuit to the state administrative court, so that we just wait,” he added. According to Raka Sandi, there is a process that must be done if the state administrative court instructed
the Electoral Commission to verify again. Surya package must still meet the minimal requirements of support so that it can be determined as the candidate pair. However, if the decision of the state administrative court is on the contrary namely dismissing the appeal of the Surya package, the commission will apply the existing mechanism. “Indeed, the decision of the Buleleng Electoral Commission has just stipulated one candidate pair as fixed candidate pair, while another is still pursuing a legal effort. Let’s see that everything has its own mechanism both for one or more than one candidate pair. However, when there is one candidate pair we should intensively coordinate because some regulations must also be learned and this is a new experience not only in Bali but also in Indonesia in general,” he said when asked all the elements of society in Buleleng to be equally committed to ensuring that the democratic process is running well, and remains in a conducive and peaceful atmosphere. 46 Bukian residents vomit due to water source contamination GIANYAR - Result of the research made by the Gianyar Health Agency and Laboratory of Sanjiwani Hospital Gianyar showed that the vomiting afflicting to 46 residents of Bukian village, Payangan, a few days ago was caused by bacterial contamination of water source. Gianyar Health Agency also performed chlorine dissemination on both springs at Subilang hamlet. It also urged the residents to maintain the habit of clean and healthy lifestyle (PHBS). The Head of the Gianyar Health Agency, Ida Ayu Cahyani, said on Tuesday (Nov. 15) that the results of laboratory test by Sanjiwani Hospital Gianyar indicated that
bacterial contamination of water sources caused dozens of residents to suffer from diarrhea and vomiting. “This is just the result of Gianyar laboratory, and now we are still awaiting the results of the provincial laboratory,” she said. When asked whether there will be a closure to the springs, Ida Ayu Cahyani said that her agency had conducted an initial measure by chlorine dissemination to a number of springs at Bukian village. “It does not need to shut down. Obviously, we are now overseeing the management and disseminating special chlorine,” she said. Aside from contamination factor of water sources, the results
of the Gianyar laboratory test also positively detected a bacterial contamination in food processing during the celebration of wedding ceremony at Subilang hamlet. This condition occurred as a result of poor food hygiene management such as the place and the tools used to serve. “Here, I urge residents to accustom clean and healthy lifestyle. Most importantly, people should always consume boiled water,” she affirmed. In the meantime, headman of Bukian, Made Juniarta, explained that residents of Subilang hamlet, Bukian, took advantage of three water sources. Two of them are the springs near the river at local
hamlet. The third source is the river where residents also often use it as toilet, washing and bathing. He admitted that one of the habits of his residents is frequently consuming water without boiling it first. “The water from the source is often not cooked, but immediately placed in the tap and directly consumed,” he said. He did not dismiss if the habit has caused 46 residents to suffer diarrhea and vomiting, Wednesday (Nov. 9). Moreover, he worried that at one of the wedding celebrations there was a use of raw water for consumption. “My worries are caused by the habit in the celebration yesterday. Due to high and

urgent demand for water, the river water was transferred to the tap without boiling,” he said. He added that after the incident he already provided an appeal for people on the importance of starting healthy and hygienic behavior. One of them is by cooking water before consuming. Besides, he also made coordination with the Gianyar Health Agency related to the feasibility of springs at Subilang hamlet. “In 2017, we plan to expand this spring so that it can widen services to the residents of Bukian. WELLINGTON - New Zealand emergency services and defence personnel evacuated hundreds of tourists and residents from a small South Island town amid more strong aftershocks on Tuesday, a day after a powerful earthquake killed two people. The 7.8-magnitude tremor struck just after midnight on Sunday, destroying farm homesteads, sending glass and masonry toppling from buildings in the capital, Wellington, and cutting transport links across the northeast of the ruggedly beautiful South Island. As aftershocks continued to rattle the region, emergency services cordoned off streets in Wellington and evacuated several buildings for fear one might collapse. United Continental Holdings Inc took a leaf out of its low-cost competitors’ playbook on Tuesday by unveiling a new low fare that limits customers to one carry-on bag that fits under a seat, part of a broader plan to boost profit over the next four years. Chicago-based United is the first major U.S. carrier to make such a move for carry-ons, which it hopes will attract some new customers and push some of its regular flyers toward higher fares. Combined with better flight connections and revamped pricing algorithms, the airline said at its investor day that it aims to add $4.8 billion to yearly operating income by 2020, excluding the effect of rising wages. The new fare class, known as ‘Basic Economy,’ risks frustrating flyers who already feel burdened with airline travel restrictions and fees, but could push some customers - especially those with large luggage - toward higher-priced fares. The No. 3 U.S. airline by passenger traffic will begin selling the no-frills fares in the first quarter of 2017 for travel starting in the second quarter. Prices will be comparable to low fares it now charges for the economy cabin, but with more restrictions. United said Basic Economy customers would not be assigned seats until the day of departure, meaning people on the same ticket may be split apart. “Flights do run pretty full today. U.S. manufacturing groups urge Trump to think hard about trade threats WASHINGTON - America’s manufacturers are urging President-elect Donald Trump to back off from his most threatening trade rhetoric and pursue a more nuanced approach to trade with China and Mexico, avoiding unilateral tariff actions and focusing on negotiations.
Corporate lobbying groups, some chief executives and protrade lawmakers also say they eventually even hope to persuade Trump that free-trade agreements can help grow the U.S. economy and create jobs. For now, these groups are bracing for higher trade tensions with China and potential changes to the 22-year-old North American Free Trade agreement with Canada and Mexico. Trump has said he would quit NAFTA unless it is renegotiated to his satisfaction and that he would declare China a currency manipulator to force negotiations for better trade terms. His suggestions that his administration could impose 45 percent across-the-board tariffs on goods from China have drawn threats of retaliation by Chinese state media against U.S. soybeans and companies such as Boeing Co and Apple Inc. “I think it’s easy to paint this is a trade war versus nothing,” said Scott Paul, president of the Alliance for American Manufac-
turing, a group representing steel and other basic industries that has argued in favor of tougher trade remedies to combat Chinese imports. “I’m of the belief that there is a lot of space between our current policy and an all-out trade war,” Paul said, adding that he would like to see Trump be more proactive on enforcing existing trade rules. While U.S. steelmakers have been successful in anti-dumping and anti-subsidy cases against Chinese competitors that have led to substantial U.S. duties, consumer products makers often are reluctant to pursue such cases due to the cost, complexity and potential retaliation. However, we will increase the hajj quota for Indonesia,” Osama Mohammed Al Shuibi said after a meeting with Vice President Jusuf Kalla here on Tuesday. The hajj quota for each country will be determined after the renovation work at the Haram Mosque in Mecca is completed. Regarding the feasibility of Indonesia availing of the unused Hajj quota of the Philippines and Singapore, Osama made it clear that it will not happen. “The quota has been formulated on the basis of the population of Muslims in each country and therefore, these cannot be changed or exchanged for one another,” he remarked. However, with the ongoing renovation of the Haram Mosque in Mecca for over three years now, Indonesias quota of 211,000 was reduced to 168,000. As a result, the already long waiting list of Indonesian hajj pilgrims became even longer. The ambassador promised to facilitate visas for Indonesian hajj pilgrims. On the occasion, Osama and Kalla did not address the issue of umrah (minor
pilgrimage to Mecca). Both discussed ways to improve relations between Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. “We talked about business, religious affairs, culture, media and investment,” he informed. The ambassador noted that Saudi Arabia has urged Indonesia to provide investment opportunities for Saudi Arabias businessmen. Eight more Indonesian pilgrims had passed away in Mecca on Oct 4, two days before the end of the Hajj season, bringing the death toll to 313 so far. Most deaths occurred due to natural causes, such as old age or respiratory ailments, according to information dispensed by the Hajj Computerization Information System here on Tuesday. As of Oct. 3, 90,410 regularscheme Indonesian pilgrims and 1,120 Hajj officers have returned home aboard 224 flights. JAKARTA - The Railway Directorate General of the Ministry of Transportation has offered the development of the Surabaya-Malang railway development project in East Java to Russia. The Railway Directorate General expressed hope in a press statement here on Tuesday that Russia will continue the development of railway project in East Kalimatan, after Russian companies had expressed their interest earlier. “The Ministry of Transportation has invited the Russian side to discuss the follow-up efforts on the railway development,” Director General for Railways, Prasetyo Boeditjahjono, said. Prasetyo said his ministry prioritized the development of the Surabaya-Malang railway project. To show its interest in the project, the Russian side has sent representatives to observe the project site and conducted surveys in the locations. He said that the railway project was a commercial project that was directed to the Russian investors. However, the form of cooperation and the investment needed could not be revealed, as it was still in the negotiation process. He added that the government was still focusing on considering the single track of the railway project. In the meantime, the Indonesian government will give preference to Japan to build the Jakarta-Surabaya semi-high speed
train project, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi last week. “Japan will receive preference,” he said, after a coordination meeting at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs, here on Friday. The government will soon complete a plan for the construction of the semi-high speed train line and will discuss it with Japan in the next few months, he said. Intan died on Monday (Nov 14) at Abdil Wahab Sjahranie General Hospital in Samarinda. She was among the victims of the bomb attack on a church in Samarinda. “This terror act crossed all bounds of humanity,” Joko Widodo lamented during his visit to a school of army officer candidate here on Tuesday. The president remarked that violence and terrorism were global challenges being faced by many countries. Following the Samarinda attack, President Joko Widodo has instructed the district military command (Kodim) and military command posts (Korem) throughout Indonesia to take all security measures. The government is struggling to maintain peace in the community. In his remarks, the president underlined the challenges posed by radicalism, poverty, unemployment and inequality among people. “The Indonesian military should anticipate any threats to
global economy and geopolitics, competitiveness and ease of doing business,” the president stressed. During the visit, the president was accompanied by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Agung, Indonesian Military Commander Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo, and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mulyono. Turkey says it’s tired of ‘two-faced’ EU attitude
ANKARA - Turkey is “fed up” with European Union condescension in talks over its application to join the bloc, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Tuesday, reflecting Ankara’s exasperation with EU criticism over human rights. Cavusoglu’s blunt comments, made as visiting German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier looked on, also highlighted Turkey’s frustration with the fact that, after 11 years of negotiations, its prospects of joining the EU look more remote than ever. “We are truly fed up of these statements degrading Turkey. The criteria are clear but there are double standards and a two-faced approach. This is what we don’t like,” Cavusoglu told a joint news conference. The EU is treading a fine line in relations with Turkey: it needs Ankara’s continued help in curbing a huge flow of refugees and migrants, especially from Syria, but is alarmed by Turkey’s crackdown on opponents since the failure of a coup attempt in July. Referring to an issue that could spell the end of Turkey’s accession bid, Cavusoglu said that the Turkish people would decide whether or not to reinstate the death penalty. Steinmeier said he had expressed concern about mass arrests and the treatment of the me-

LONDON - Ron Dennis has been forced out as chairman and chief executive of McLaren, bringing to an end the Briton’s 35-year involvement with one of Formula One’s top teams. The 69-year-old relinquished his duties on Tuesday following a decision by the majority shareholders to place him on ‘gardening leave’ until his contract expires in mid-January. McLaren said in a statement that Dennis, who has a 25 percent
stake in the McLaren Technology Group, would remain a shareholder and director. It added that McLaren “will be run on an interim basis by an Executive Committee comprising the Group’s majority shareholders” until a new CEO was appointed. American marketing executive Zak Brown, former head of CSM Sport&Entertainment, who has brought numerous top sponsors into Formula One, has already been linked to the job in paddock speculation. He was not immediately available for comment.
Dennis said he was disappointed the shareholders had “forced through this decision... despite the strong warnings from the rest of the management team about the potential consequences of their actions on the business. “The grounds they have stated are entirely spurious...,” he added. A Sky News report last week said that Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund Mumtalakat, which owns 50 percent, and Saudi-born businessman Mansour Ojjeh, the CEO of TAG who holds the remaining 25 percent, wanted Dennis out.
It said an unidentified consortium of Chinese investors had made a 1.65 billion pounds ($2.05 billion) takeover bid for McLaren Technology Group that Dennis supported but the other shareholders opposed. Dennis, who has been involved with McLaren since 1980 and is one of F1’s leading lights, stood down as team principal in 2009 but returned as group chief executive in January 2014. The team last won a race in 2012. Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone told Reuters that Dennis had failed to secure a High Court

LONDON - Ron Dennis has been forced out as chairman and chief executive of McLaren, bringing to an end the Briton’s 35-year involvement with one of Formula One’s top teams. The 69-year-old relinquished his duties on Tuesday following a decision by the majority shareholders to place him on ‘gardening leave’ until his contract expires in mid-January. McLaren said in a statement that Dennis, who has a 25 percent
stake in the McLaren Technology Group, would remain a shareholder and director. It added that McLaren “will be run on an interim basis by an Executive Committee comprising the Group’s majority shareholders” until a new CEO was appointed. American marketing executive Zak Brown, former head of CSM Sport&Entertainment, who has brought numerous top sponsors into Formula One, has already been linked to the job in paddock speculation. He was not immediately available for comment.
Dennis said he was disappointed the shareholders had “forced through this decision... despite the strong warnings from the rest of the management team about the potential consequences of their actions on the business. “The grounds they have stated are entirely spurious...,” he added. A Sky News report last week said that Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund Mumtalakat, which owns 50 percent, and Saudi-born businessman Mansour Ojjeh, the CEO of TAG who holds the remaining 25 percent, wanted Dennis out.
It said an unidentified consortium of Chinese investors had made a 1.65 billion pounds ($2.05 billion) takeover bid for McLaren Technology Group that Dennis supported but the other shareholders opposed. Dennis, who has been involved with McLaren since 1980 and is one of F1’s leading lights, stood down as team principal in 2009 but returned as group chief executive in January 2014. The team last won a race in 2012. Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone told Reuters that Dennis had failed to secure a High Court
injunction last week against the move to sideline him until midJanuary. The BBC reported that the other shareholders felt Dennis’ autocratic style was not suited to growing McLaren in the future, a claim he denied on Tuesday. “My management style is the same as it has always been and is one that has enabled McLaren to become an automotive and technology group that has won 20 Formula One world championships and grown into an 850 million pounds a year business,” he said. Having edged a high-intensity first-set when Raonic double-faulted on set point in a tense tiebreak, Djokovic looked to have broken the shackles in the second to lead 4-2. Raonic, who dialled up his mighty serve to speeds of 140mph, stormed back to rock Djokovic on his heels and came within a missed forehand of extending the match into a decider. But Djokovic produced a magical backhand flick at 5-5 in the night’s second tiebreak, then an ace, before Raonic succumbed to an eighth successive defeat at the hands of the Serb when his backhand flew wide.

Turkey says it’s tired of ‘two-faced’ EU attitude
ANKARA - Turkey is “fed up” with European Union condescension in talks over its application to join the bloc, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Tuesday, reflecting Ankara’s exasperation with EU criticism over human rights. Cavusoglu’s blunt comments, made as visiting German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier looked on, also highlighted Turkey’s frustration with the fact that, after 11 years of negotiations, its prospects of joining the EU look more remote than ever. “We are truly fed up of these statements degrading Turkey. The criteria are clear but there are double standards and a two-faced approach. This is what we don’t like,” Cavusoglu told a joint news conference. The EU is treading a fine line in relations with Turkey: it needs Ankara’s continued help in curbing a huge flow of refugees and migrants, especially from Syria, but is alarmed by Turkey’s crackdown on opponents since the failure of a coup attempt in July. Referring to an issue that could spell the end of Turkey’s accession bid, Cavusoglu said that the Turkish people would decide whether or not to reinstate the death penalty. Steinmeier said he had expressed concern about mass arrests and the treatment of the me-

There’s no other industry in the world I can think of that does something like that,” he said. United shares closed up nearly 5 percent. United Continental Holdings Inc took a leaf out of its low-cost competitors’ playbook on Tuesday by unveiling a new low fare that limits customers to one carry-on bag that fits under a seat, part of a broader plan to boost profit over the next four years. Chicago-based United is the first major U.S. carrier to make such a move for carry-ons, which it hopes will attract some new customers and push some of its regular flyers toward higher fares. Combined with better flight connections and revamped pricing algorithms, the airline said at its investor day that it aims to add $4.8 billion to yearly operating income by 2020, excluding the effect of rising wages. The new fare class, known as ‘Basic Economy,’ risks frustrating flyers who already feel burdened with airline travel restrictions and fees, but could push some customers - especially those with large luggage - toward higher-priced fares. The No. 3 U.S. airline by passenger traffic will begin selling the no-frills fares in the first quarter of 2017 for travel starting in the second quarter. Prices will be comparable to low fares it now charges for the economy cabin, but with more restrictions. United said Basic Economy customers would not be assigned seats until the day of departure, meaning people on the same ticket may be split apart. “Flights do run pretty full today. U.S. manufacturing groups urge Trump to think hard about trade threats WASHINGTON - America’s manufacturers are urging President-elect Donald Trump to back off from his most threatening trade rhetoric and pursue a more nuanced approach to trade with China and Mexico, avoiding unilateral tariff actions and focusing on negotiations.
Corporate lobbying groups, some chief executives and protrade lawmakers also say they eventually even hope to persuade Trump that free-trade agreements can help grow the U.S. economy and create jobs. For now, these groups are bracing for higher trade tensions with China and potential changes to the 22-year-old North American Free Trade agreement with Canada and Mexico. Trump has said he would quit NAFTA unless it is renegotiated to his satisfaction and that he would declare China a currency manipulator to force negotiations for better trade terms. His suggestions that his administration could impose 45 percent across-the-board tariffs on goods from China have drawn threats of retaliation by Chinese state media against U.S. soybeans and companies such as Boeing Co and Apple Inc. “I think it’s easy to paint this is a trade war versus nothing,” said Scott Paul, president of the Alliance for American Manufac-
turing, a group representing steel and other basic industries that has argued in favor of tougher trade remedies to combat Chinese imports. “I’m of the belief that there is a lot of space between our current policy and an all-out trade war,” Paul said, adding that he would like to see Trump be more proactive on enforcing existing trade rules. While U.S. steelmakers have been successful in anti-dumping and anti-subsidy cases against Chinese competitors that have led to substantial U.S. duties, consumer products makers often are reluctant to pursue such cases due to the cost, complexity and potential retaliation. JAKARTA - The Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Indonesia, Osama Mohammed Al Shuibi, has pledged to increase the hajj quota for Indonesia. “We know that the Haram Mosque in Mecca is undergoing renovation. However, we will increase the hajj quota for Indonesia,” Osama Mohammed Al Shuibi said after a meeting with Vice President Jusuf Kalla here on Tuesday. The hajj quota for each country will be determined after the renovation work at the Haram Mosque in Mecca is completed. Regarding the feasibility of Indonesia availing of the unused Hajj quota of the Philippines and Singapore, Osama made it clear that it will not happen. “The quota has been formulated on the basis of the population of Muslims in each country and therefore, these cannot be changed or exchanged for one another,” he remarked. However, with the ongoing renovation of the Haram Mosque in Mecca for over three years now, Indonesias quota of 211,000 was reduced to 168,000. As a result, the already long waiting list of Indonesian hajj pilgrims became even longer. The ambassador promised to facilitate visas for Indonesian hajj pilgrims. On the occasion, Osama and Kalla did not address the issue of umrah (minor
pilgrimage to Mecca). Both discussed ways to improve relations between Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. “We talked about business, religious affairs, culture, media and investment,” he informed. As of Oct. 3, 90,410 regularscheme Indonesian pilgrims and 1,120 Hajj officers have returned home aboard 224 flights. Also, 10,001 nonregular Hajj pilgrims have returned to Indonesia, according to Nurul Badruttamam of the Indonesian Hajj Organizing Committee. Some 155,200 Indonesian Muslims have taken part in the regular Hajj, organized by the Indonesian government in 2016. JAKARTA - The Railway Directorate General of the Ministry of Transportation has offered the development of the Surabaya-Malang railway development project in East Java to Russia. The Railway Directorate General expressed hope in a press statement here on Tuesday that Russia will continue the development of railway project in East Kalimatan, after Russian companies had expressed their interest earlier. “The Ministry of Transportation has invited the Russian side to discuss the follow-up efforts on the railway development,” Director General for Railways, Prasetyo Boeditjahjono, said. Prasetyo said his ministry prioritized the development of the Surabaya-Malang railway project. To show its interest in the project, the Russian side has sent representatives to observe the project site and conducted surveys in the locations. He said that the railway project was a commercial project that was directed to the Russian investors. However, the form of cooperation and the investment needed could not be revealed, as it was still in the negotiation process. He added that the government was still focusing on considering the single track of the railway project. In the meantime, the Indonesian government will give preference to Japan to build the Jakarta-Surabaya semi-high speed
train project, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi last week. “Japan will receive preference,” he said, after a coordination meeting at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs, here on Friday. Despite receiving the preference, Japan must continue to meet the qualifications set by the Indonesian government, Sumadi, one-time president director of state airport operator Angkasa Pura II, said. He made it clear that at the coordination meeting with Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs; Bambang Brodjonegoro, National Development Planning Minister/National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) Head; and Sri Mulyani, Finance Minister, the government decided to expedite the construction of the semi-high speed train project. The government will soon complete a plan for the construction of the semi-high speed train line and will discuss it with Japan in the next few months, he said. Meanwhile, Bambang said at the meeting that the government still had to assess the semi-high speed train project. “We are still discussing whether the project will use an ordinary loan scheme, government project or private sector participation scheme,” he said. Intan died on Monday (Nov 14) at Abdil Wahab Sjahranie General Hospital in Samarinda. She was among the victims of the bomb attack on a church in Samarinda. “This terror act crossed all bounds of humanity,” Joko Widodo lamented during his visit to a school of army officer candidate here on Tuesday. The president remarked that violence and terrorism were global challenges being faced by many countries. Following the Samarinda attack, President Joko Widodo has instructed the district military command (Kodim) and military command posts (Korem) throughout Indonesia to take all security measures. The government is struggling to maintain peace in the community. In his remarks, the president underlined the challenges posed by radicalism, poverty, unemployment and inequality among people. “The Indonesian military should anticipate any threats to
global economy and geopolitics, competitiveness and ease of doing business,” the president stressed. During the visit, the president was accompanied by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Agung, Indonesian Military Commander Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo, and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mulyono. The Indonesian police had earlier questioned 19 people in connection with a Molotov cocktail attack on Oikumene Church in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, on Sunday. “So far, 19 people have been questioned in connection with the explosion at Oikumene Church,” the chief of the East Kalimantan regional police command, Inspector General Safaruddin, told newsmen here on Monday. Investigation is still going on, including about the type of bomb used in the attack,” he disclosed. Four motorcycles were damaged in the bomb explosion, including the one used by the suspect. Five people were wounded in the incident including four children, all under the age of five years. Among them was Intan Olivia Marbun, the two and a half years old girl who died on Monday in the hospital where she was admitted with 78 percent burns. Another victim, Triniti Hutahaya, was still in a critical condition. Juhanda was caught by villagers while trying to escape by jumping into the Mahakam river.(ant)

Hopefully, there would be an immediate good, democratic and acceptable resolution to all parties,” said Chairman of the Bali Electoral Commission, Dewa Kade Wiarsa Raka Sandi, when met in Denpasar, Monday (Nov. 14). Raka Sandi added that the commission will wait for the verdict on the appeal of the Surya package to the state administrative court. This Buleleng electoral dispute is expected to be decided objectively and clearly in accordance with the mechanisms or conditions. If the state administrative court allowed the appeal, the commission is obliged to implement the court’s decision. “I observe that the disputes all this time in the Buleleng supervisory board, there is a demand for reverification. If I am not mistaken, at least they claimed to do it at 14 villages, and then only five villages were granted. I do not know because of having not received any copy of the lawsuit to the state administrative court, so that we just wait,” he added. According to Raka Sandi, there is a process that must be done if the state administrative court instructed
the Electoral Commission to verify again. Surya package must still meet the minimal requirements of support so that it can be determined as the candidate pair. However, if the decision of the state administrative court is on the contrary namely dismissing the appeal of the Surya package, the commission will apply the existing mechanism. “Indeed, the decision of the Buleleng Electoral Commission has just stipulated one candidate pair as fixed candidate pair, while another is still pursuing a legal effort. Let’s see that everything has its own mechanism both for one or more than one candidate pair. However, when there is one candidate pair we should intensively coordinate because some regulations must also be learned and this is a new experience not only in Bali but also in Indonesia in general,” he said when asked all the elements of society in Buleleng to be equally committed to ensuring that the democratic process is running well, and remains in a conducive and peaceful atmosphere. New Zealand evacuates quake-hit town, fears of Wellington building collapse
WELLINGTON - New Zealand emergency services and defence personnel evacuated hundreds of tourists and residents from a small South Island town amid more strong aftershocks on Tuesday, a day after a powerful earthquake killed two people. The 7.8-magnitude tremor struck just after midnight on Sunday, destroying farm homesteads, sending glass and masonry toppling from buildings in the capital, Wellington, and cutting transport links across the northeast of the ruggedly beautiful South Island. As aftershocks continued to rattle the region, emergency services cordoned off streets in Wellington and evacuated several buildings for fear one might collapse. Wellington Mayor Justin Lester said the vacant building appeared to have suffered structural damage when the land it was on subsided in the quake. MARRAKESH - France and the United Nations on Tuesday stepped up warnings to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump about the risks of quitting a 2015 global plan to combat climate change, saying a historic shift from fossil fuels is unstoppable. French President Francois Hollande, addressing almost 200 nations meeting in Morocco on ways to slow global warming, said that inaction would be “disastrous for future generations and it would be dangerous for peace”. Both he and U.N. SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon called on Trump, who has called man-made global warming a hoax, to drop a campaign pledge to cancel the global 2015 Paris Agreement that aims to shift from fossil fuels to cleaner energies. “The United States, the largest economic power in the world, the second largest greenhouse gas emitter, must respect the commitments it has undertaken,” Hollande said to applause. The agreement was “irreversible”, he said. In such U.N. meetings, it is very rare for leaders to single out others for even veiled criticism. Diet sodas might not raise diabetes risk
NEW YORK - Drinking colas and other sugary drinks is tied to an increased risk of so-called pre-diabetes, a precursor to fullblown disease, but diet soda is not, a recent study suggests. Previous studies on the link between diet sodas and diabetes have been mixed; some research pointing to a potential connection has suggested this relationship may be explained at least in part by soda drinkers being overweight or obese. In the current study, however, adults who routinely consumed at least one can of soda or other sugarsweetened beverages a day were 46 percent more likely to develop elevated blood sugar levels than people who rarely or never drink cola. “Emphasis should be placed on substituting sugar-sweetened beverages with water, unsweetened
teas, or coffee,” said senior study author Nicola McKeown, a nutrition researcher at Tufts University in Boston. “For daily consumers of sugary drinks, kicking the habit may be a difficult challenge, and incorporating an occasional diet soda, while increasing fluids from other sources, may be the best strategy to ultimately remove sugar-sweetened beverages from the diet,” McKeown added by email. Globally, about one in nine adults have diabetes, and the disease will be the seventh leading cause of death by 2030, according to the World Health
Organization. Most of these people have Type 2, or adult-onset, diabetes, which happens when the body can’t properly use or make enough of the hormone insulin to convert blood sugar into energy. People with blood sugar levels that are slightly elevated, but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis, are sometimes described as having “pre-diabetes” because many will go on to develop diabetes. In the current study, researchers examined data collected on 1,685 middle-aged adults over about 14 years. At the start of the study, none of the participants had diabetes or pre-diabetes. They were 52 years old on average and typically overweight. Participants completed question-
naires detailing what they ate and drank during the study period. Sugar-sweetened beverages were defined as colas and other carbonated beverages, as well as drinks such as lemonade and fruit punch. This didn’t include fruit juice. People who drank the most sodas – typically around six 12-ounce cans a week – had a much greater risk of developing elevated blood sugar levels than other participants after adjusting for factors such as age, gender and weight, researchers report in the Journal of Nutrition. Higher consumption of soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages was also associated with insulin resistance, a reduced ability to respond to the hormone insulin that is another risk factor for developing diabetes.
Even after accounting for changes in weight and other aspects of diet, the relationships between sugarsweetened beverages and these metabolic risk factors for diabetes persisted. Diet soda intake—defined as low-calorie cola or other carbonated low-calorie beverages— was not associated with elevated blood sugar or insulin resistance. The study doesn’t prove soda or sugary drinks cause diabetes. Another limitation of the study is that participants may not be representative of a typical U.S. adult, the authors note. People in the study were mostly white, middle aged and more likely to be women. They also tended not to be as overweight or thick around the middle as many U.S. adults, the authors point out. (rtr)
Huge study finds a billion people suffer from high blood pressure
LONDON - The number of people with high blood pressure has almost doubled in 40 years to over 1.1 billion worldwide, scientists said on Wednesday, with the burden of the condition shifting from the rich to the poor. In the largest study of its kind analyzing blood pressure in every nation between 1975 and 2015, the scientists said that it has dropped sharply in wealthy countries - possibly due to healthier diets and lifestyles - but risen in poorer ones. The increases are especially significant in Africa and South Asia,
the researchers said, and could be partly due to poor nutrition in childhood. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, puts extra strain on the blood vessels and major organs such as the heart, brain and kidneys. It is the world’s top cause of cardiovascular disease, which leads to strokes and heart attacks, and is estimated to cause 7.5 million deaths a year worldwide. Led by World Health Organization researchers working with hundreds of scientists internationally, this study covered blood pressure
measurements from nearly 20 million people and was published in The Lancet medical journal. In Europe, Britain had the lowest proportion of people with high blood pressure in 2015. South Korea, the United States and Canada had the lowest hypertension rates in the world. More than half the world’s adults with high blood pressure in 2015 lived in Asia, the study estimated. Some 226 million people in China have high blood pressure, it said, as do 200 million in India. “High blood pressure is no longer
related to affluence - as it was in 1975 - but is now a major health issue linked with poverty,” said Majid Ezzati, a professor at Imperial College London’s school of public health. He said that while he could not be sure of why the data showed high blood pressure as more of a problem in poorer countries, it may be partly due to overall better health and more consumption of fruit and vegetables in wealthy societies. In rich countries, the condition is also caught more frequently and earlier, and managed more effectively with medicines, Ezzati said.
Blood pressure is defined by two numbers - systolic pressure, which represents the force with which the heart pumps blood into the blood vessels, and diastolic pressure, a measure of the resistance to the blood flow in the body’s blood vessels. Both numbers are measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg). High blood pressure is defined as 140/90 mmHg or higher. The condition is caused by a number of factors including having a diet high in salt and low in fruit and vegetables, and not taking enough exercise. (rtr)

TABANAN - Rampant incidence of fallen trees and landslides occurred in some areas in Baturiti subdistrict received special attention from the Tabanan disaster mitigation agency (BPBD) and sanitation and landscaping agency (DKP). On Tuesday (Nov. 16) a number of joint personnel from relevant agencies conducted pruning of shade trees that are vulnerable to uproot during rainy season. The target was the main DenpasarSingaraja road section precisely at Perean road section to Luwus, Baturiti. The Head of DKP Tabanan, I Wayan Sugatra, said the activity continued similar activities carried out the previous week. He recognized the route of Baturiti area, especially in the main line of
Denpasar-Singaraja road section, is still very prone to disaster. Moreover, the path to the tourist area is crowded with passing motorists. “Many shade trees at this point have died because they are flayed by the public. On that account, they are prone to collapse,” he said. Pruning activities, said Sugatra, is carried out by a joint team because it is crucial. A joint team comprising the BPBD and DKP as the parent team was assisted by the officers from the transportation agency, municipal police, police and the military. “It is easier for us to anticipate traffic because it is indeed very crowded,” he said. Sugatra recognized that shade tree pruning activities along the main route between Denpasar and Singaraja applied a priority scale.
“We are targeting the areas considered more vulnerable. Thankfully we can reduce the incidence of disasters related to greening in the main line,” he said. In the meantime, the shade tree pruning at Denpasar-Singaraja road section was conducted by the BPBD officers by teaming up with third parties. Just for information, Baturiti subdistrict is one of the subdistricts belonging to danger zone of disaster, such as fallen trees and landslides. Moreover, high rainfall accompanied with high winds had caused landslides and fallen trees in some areas in Baturiti subdistrict. BANGLI - The world of performing arts in Bali misses another figure. I Nyoman Durpa, a bondres artist and founder of the Dwi Mekar art studio, died on Tuesday morning (Nov.16). The departure of the artist figure that once ran as a candidate for the deputy regent of Bangli in 2010 now leaves sorrow and deep memories for his family at Satra village, Kintamani. A nephew of Durpa, Made Artana, when met at the funeral home at Satra village last Tuesday revealed that his uncle all this time having been living in Singaraja died on Tuesday around 06:00 at Kerta Husada Hospital in Singaraja. Durpa died from complication of diabetes, high blood pressure and tetanus having been suffered since the past few years. Durpa who has begun to plunge into the world of performing art since the 1980s, last returned to home village at Satra about three months ago. “His last homecoming was when mapiuning or making notification ritual because he wanted to say prayers to Dalem Ganda Mayu temple,” he explained. In the eyes of his extended family, Durpa once becoming the running mate of Ida Bagus Ludra is known to be intelligent and humorous. The late Nyoman Durpa is also known to diligently pay devotional works and nurture young people at Satra village in the art field although most of his days were spent in Buleleng. “As a family, we have missed his figure. BANGLI - Residents of Batu Meyeh hamlet, Songan A, Kintamani, start to cultivate papyrus leaves into a variety of high-valued handicrafts. The skill of making crafts such as hat, purse, flower and jewelry boxes is obtained after a number of residents behind the hills got training facilitated by the government of Bangli recently. The Head of the Bangli Commerce and Industry Agency, Nengah Sudibia, said on Tuesday (Nov. 15) that the training of making handicrafts from papyrus leaf was given to some residents of Batu Meyeh because the area behind the hills has the potential of papyrus. His agency provided the training to make various crafts for the residents for four days. The coaches were brought in directly from Bona village, Gianyar. “Previously, local residents have been making some crafts such as jewelry box. Now, we add to their
skills with the provision of training to make the other crafts,” said Sudibya. Sudibya further added that other than taught to make crafts targeting the outside market, local artisans were also given training to make woven crafts targeting local market. The craft products specifically targeting the local market include the rice bag and small mats for ritual paraphernalia.”All this time, the ritual paraphernalia like mat and rice bag are mostly brought in from outside Bangli. Now, we train the artisans to meet the local
market,” he explained. In the meantime, to support the absorption of the craft products of Batu Meyeh, he claimed to be facilitating the marketing. So far, the craft products of Batu Meyeh are taken by collectors from Gianyar. In order that the craft products of residents behind the hill is becoming widely recognized by consumers, he will ask for the help of residents of Batu Meyeh and other Bangli residents staying outside the region like Kuta to participate in promoting them. He added that his agency also plans to invite a number of craftsmen behind the hills to make a comparative study to Lombok. Or so says People magazine, which on Tuesday named the wrestler-turned-actor this year’s “sexiest man alive.” Johnson, 44, whose famous catch phrase in the ring is, “Can you smell what The Rock is cooking?”, said learning about his new title put him in a quandary. “What went through my mind was just how cool and exciting it is,” Johnson told People. “And then I thought, ‘Wow, we’ve pretty much reached the pinnacle.’ I’m not quite too sure where we go from here.” Johnson rose to mainstream fame in the mid-1990s as a contender with World Wrestling En-

Indonesia police name Jakarta governor as blasphemy suspect
JAKARTA — Police on Wednesday named the Christian governor of the Indonesian capital as a suspect in a blasphemy investigation in a major test of the Muslim-majority nation’s reputation for religious tolerance. Earlier this month, Jakarta was rocked by a massive protest by conservative Muslims against the governor. One person died and dozens were injured in rioting. Hard-liners have threatened more protests if Ahok isn’t arrested. Police announced at a news conference that the popular governor, Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, cannot leave the country while the investigation is underway. However, they said he is not being detained because investigators and religious experts were sharply divided over whether the comments at issue were blasphemous. “After long discussions, we reached a decision that the case should be tried in an open court,” said National Police chief detective Ari Dono. The accusation of blasphemy against Ahok, an ethnic Chinese and Christian who is an ally of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, has galvanized Jokowi’s political opponents in the nation of 250
million where about 90 percent of people are Muslims, but five other religions are also recognized by the state. Jokowi canceled an official visit to Australia because of the rioting and has spent the past two weeks rallying the political, religious and security establishments behind him. It has also been a gift to politicians vying against Ahok, who is seeking a second term as Jakarta governor in elections in February. Among them is the son of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, a former president. Yudhoyono courted controversy by calling for Ahok’s arrest and saying he supported the Nov. 4 protest.
The Islamic Defenders Front, a vigilante group that wants to impose Shariah law, began demanding Ahok’s arrest after a video circulated online in which he joked to an audience about a passage in the Quran that could be interpreted as prohibiting Muslims from accepting non-Muslims as leaders. The governor has apologized for the comment.
