‘Jump Street’ beats ‘Dragon’ Associated Press
LOS ANGELES — In a summertime battle of sequels, a pair of kooky cops beat out flying dragons for the top spot at the North American box office, but the dragons soared internationally. The R-rated comedy “22 Jump Street” debuted in first place domestically with $60 million, followed by “How to Train Your Dragon 2” which opened with $50 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday. Internationally, though, “Dragon” dwarfed “Jump Street” with $24.8 million to $6.9 million, respectively. Still, it’s an impressive showing for two sequels. The original versions of “Dragon” and

LOS ANGELES — Casey Kasem, the internationally famous radio host with the cheerful manner and gentle voice who became the king of the top 40 countdown with a syndicated show that ran for decades, died Sunday. He was 82. A statement issued by the Kasem family said Kasem died at 3:23 a.m. Sunday, on Father’s Day, surrounded by family and friends at a Washington state hospital. “Even though we know he is in a better place and no longer suffering, we are heartbroken,” wrote his daughter Kerri Kasem on Twitter and Facebook from the family. “The world will miss Casey Kasem, an incredible talent and humanitarian; we will miss our dad.” Kasem’s “American Top 40” began on July 4, 1970, in Los Angeles. The No. 1 song on his list then was Three Dog Night’s cover of Randy Newman’s “Mama Told Me Not to Come.” In his signoff, he would tell viewers: “And don’t forget: keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.” Media personality Ryan Seacrest, who took over the countdown from Kasem in 2004, said in a statement that Kasem’s death is a loss for radio listeners worldwide. Seacrest said that as a child he’d listen to Kasem’s show every weekend “and dream about someday becoming a radio DJ.” In recent years, Kasem was trapped in a feud between his three adult children and his second wife, former actress Jean Kasem. In 2013, his children filed a legal petition to gain control of his health care, alleging that Kasem was suffering from advanced Parkinson’s disease and that his wife was isolating him from friends and family members. Kasem also suffered from Lewy Body Disease, a form of dementia.
A judge in May temporarily stripped his wife of her caretaker role after she moved him from a medical facility in Los Angeles to a friend’s home in Washington state. Jean Kasem said she moved her husband to protect his privacy and to consult with doctors. Casey Kasem developed a severe bedsore while in Washington and was in critical condition by the time he was hospitalized in early June. It was a sad, startling end for a man whose voice had entertained and informed music lovers worldwide.

MANGUPURA - Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has mapped 16 tourist destinations in Indonesia having the potential to work on MICE market. The 16 destinations include Bali, Jakarta, Bandung, Balikpapan, Batam, Bintan, Jakarta, Lombok, Makassar, Manado, Medan, Padang, Palembang, Semarang, Solo, Surabaya and Yogyakarta. Central government also continues to push the existing resources in the region to improve in welcoming the meeting, incentive, convention and exhibition (MICE) tourism visits.

“So far, it is only Bali and Jakarta that can organize or meet the criteria of MICE. We’ve mapped out 16 MICE destinations other than Jakarta and Bali. Another destination, namely Medan, has met the criteria for regional events, but has not been able to hold an international convention and meeting,” said Director of Special Interest, Convention, Incentive and Event

He said that Jakarta and Bali had met the criteria to be MICE destination based on the mapping and classification of the 16 MICE destinations in Indonesia. The main problems owned by the 14 other destinations lay in the infrastructure and human resources. “Right now, there are only two
provinces complying with the criteria, namely Greater Jakarta and Bali. Meanwhile, the other destinations are still constrained by human resources and infrastructure,” he said. He hoped that local government continued to improve the quality of human resources, especially in the field of tourism. At present, all the countries in the world were
encouraging the tourism and creative economy. They aggressively developed both sectors. “In the future, the agenda of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy is to provide an understanding and socialization, especially to the 14 cities that have not qualified the criteria of MICE,” he said. According to him, MICE destination had more advantages and contributions to revenue from tourism than the usual tourist visits. MICE activities usually involved up to hundreds of participants with the length of stay reaching more than 12 days. “Unlike ordinary travelers, their length of stay maximally reaches 9 days, while the MICE participants can reach 12 days,” he
concluded. He mentioned that contribution of MICE to tourism in Indonesia exceeded 40 percent, compared to the gains obtained from ordinary travelers. This market also continued to record a growth of up to 20 percent each year. “Unfortunately this is still unbalanced as it is only held in Jakarta and Bali. So, we encourage the 14 other destinations to become MICE destination as well,” he hoped. He added that Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy would strive to encourage the regions in order to have MICE facilities and promote it to become wellknown. Continued on page 6

Udayana Military Command presents fragmentary show TROOPS of the IX/Udayana Military Regional Command participated in the opening ceremony of the Bali Arts Festival (BAF). However, the appearance in the BAF XXXVI 2014 immediately received a warm welcome from the people of Bali. Other than in the parade at Bajra Sandi, Renon, Denpasar, the presentation of a number of dances was also performed at the Ardha Candra open stage, Denpasar Art Center, Saturday night (Jun 14). Hundreds of soldiers of the Indonesian Military (TNI) were joining the show. In the presentation, four colossal dances were staged for the people of Bali. At the closing session, Adjutant General Team Leader of the IX/Udayana Military Regional Command, Eko Waluyo Setyantoro, with all the other dancers sang a song composed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, entitled Matahari Bersinar (The Sun Shines). According to Eko Waluyo, the participation of his party in the annual art extravaganza this year was inspired by the idea of the Commander of the IX / Udayana Regional Military Command, Wisnu Bawa Tenaya. All the dances performed were the creation of the former commander of the Kopassus, Maj. Gen. Wisnu. Even, there were four dances performed namely the Janger Dance, Nusantara Menyama Braya (National Unity) Dance, Mutual Aid Fragmentary Show reflecting the military-police oneness with people and Red-White Dance. Each dance, said Eko Waluyo, had a different meaning. Janger Dance was one of the dances of Indonesia in general and Bali in particular and very well known both at home and overseas. It was predicted to have been hundreds of years old and the groups performing the show spread out across Southern Bali area. The Janger Dance itself was exhibited by some people in pairs. Women and men were dancing and singing alternately. The dance, he added, depicted the story of couples who were in mutual love and attempted to mutually establish relationship. It belonged to social dance which exhibited a certain moment as an entertainment. It showed off the basic of Balinese dance movements and they were not difficult to do. was accompanied by traditional pop songs from various regions in Indonesia. The dance illustrated the unity and integrity of the nation and the Republic of Indonesia consisting of diverse culture, local language, race, ethnicity, religion and belief. The dance revealed the meaning on how to increase the spirit of tolerance among the differences of race and religion in order to become a perfect union and complement one another and strengthen the patriotism. Well, then, the Mutual Aid Fragmentary Show depicted the oneness of military-police with people. This dance told about a safe, peaceful and prosperous society as well as the life dynamics of the agrarian society leading to universal welfare. Universal welfare needed to be supported by the sense of security and peace for all people. Without the sense of security and peace, it would be difficult to materialize the prosperity. When any disturbance against the security occurred, the military getting the information would immediately came to put it down. The role of military and police here was to support and assist in overcoming the difficulties of the people around them through the rural army social development (TMMD). The last one was the Red-White Dance. The dance had significance to rekindle the high nationalism and patriotism. The Red-White Dance had a philosophical meaning. Red meant bold and white meant holy. Red symbolized the human body, whereas white symbolized the human soul. Both complemented each other and enhanced for the triumph of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. “As the closing, with the other dancers I would like to sing a song entitled Matahari Bersinar composed by Mr. President SBY,” he said. A predatory fish emerges in Lake Buyan

BULELENG - Population of freshwater fish in the area of Lake Buyan, Pancasari village, Sukasada subdistrict, is feared to diminish. This happens becausepredatory fish emerges in the lake lately preying on the eggs or small fingerlings growing in Lake Buyan. This situation makes fishermen and anglers worry if the predatory fish is not exterminated, the freshwater fish population in the lake will continue to diminish and even be at risk of extinction. As information gathered, fishermen and anglers often found the predatory fish. The fish was often caught in the net or preyed on the hook baits thrown by the anglers. Fishermen and anglers called the predatory fish as the zebra fish. Physically, this fish has hard skin and sharp scales. As the name implies, the fish skin has black and white stripes with varying sizes. The zebra fish preys on the eggs and fingerlings growing in the lake. The emergence of zebra fish causes the freshwater fish population in Lake Buyan to be threatened and diminish dramatically. If this condition is left unchecked, the fish catch of fisherman is ascertained to decrease. Not only that, fishermen also worry if the fingerlings newly broadcast by local government cannot grow because they are first devoured by the predatory zebra fish. A fisherman said the zebra fish was known to have emerged since the past few months. No one knew where the zebra fish definitely came from. However, the zebra fish was alleged to accidentally come with the scatter of fingerlings frequently made recently in Lake Buyan. “Probably, the zebra fish inadvertently mixed with the fingerlings scattered so it breeds as it is today. Additionally, the zebra fish is an ornamental fish so it’s impossible to live in the lake. Moreover, emergence of the fish starts to occur within the past few months,” said the fisherman. Meanwhile, the Division Head of Business and Product Processing, Ketut Suwardana, with permission from the Head of Buleleng Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Nyoman Sutrisna confirmed if a predatory zebra fish had emerged in Lake Buyan
allegedly and preyed on eggs and freshwater fingerlings. Suwadarma said the Fishery and Maritime Affairs continued to search an effort in order to ensure the early emergence of the zebra fish. Unfortunately, the agency had difficulty to know the parties that had scattered fish and the species of fish was not known clearly. However, the search indicated there was information from fishermen and local residents that a few years ago there was a collector cultivating ornamental fish around the lake. However, production of the ornamental fingerlings was not sold. Therefore, the fingerlings were then scattered into the lake. Since the scatter of the ornamental fish, the zebra fish proliferated very quickly. Even, the zebra fish was easy to find on the edge of the lake. In addition, there was other evidence if it belonged to ornamental fish and was not an endemic fish in Lake Buyan. “Indeed, the zebra fish emerges but based on the search we’ve done there used to be a collector of ornamental fish. Unluckily, its fish was unsold so it was then scattered into the lake. If we associate with the zebra fish, it belongs to ornamental fish species. The zebra fish proliferates as there was previously a fish scatter and not endemic in the lake,” he said. According to Suwadarma, the attack of zebra fish had caused the freshwater fish population in the lake to be disrupted. Possibly it would have an impact on the decrease of fish population in the lake. It happened because the eggs and small freshwater fingerlings were preyed by the zebra fish. To overcome such condition, the Fishery and Maritime Affairs tried to capture the zebra fish together with fishermen and anglers. In order to intensify the hunt against the zebra fish with fishermen and anglers, the Fishery and Maritime Affairs would take advantage of the event like the Lake Buyan Festival on June 20, 2014 by organizing a contest to angle the zebra fish. With the contest, fishermen and anglers were intrigued to participate in the zebra fish hunt becoming the predator to other fish in Lake Buyan. (kmb38)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LOS ANGELES — NASA hopes to try again to launch a “flying saucer” into Earth’s atmosphere to test Mars mission technology after losing the chance because of bad weather, project managers said Thursday. The space agency is working with the U.S. Navy on the Hawaiian island of Kauai to see if it can get the experimental flight off the ground in late June. During the current two-week launch window, the team came “tantalizingly close,” but winds spoiled every opportunity, said project manager Mark Adler of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Winds must be calm for a helium balloon to carry the discshaped vehicle over the Pacific so it doesn’t stray into no-fly zones. “We’re ready to go. We’re not giving up,” Adler said. NASA has invested $150 million in the project so far, and extending the launch window would come with some cost. If the flight
doesn’t happen this summer, it would be postponed until next year. The mission is designed to test a new supersonic vehicle and giant parachute in Earth’s stratosphere where conditions are similar to the red planet. For decades, NASA relied on the same parachute design to slow spacecraft streaking through the thin Martian atmosphere. The 1-ton Curiosity rover that landed in 2012 used the same basic parachute as the twin Viking landers in 1976. With plans to land heavier payloads and eventually astronauts, NASA needed to develop new drag devices and a stronger parachute. Measuring 110 feet (33.5 meters) in diameter, the new parachute is twice as large as the one that carried Curiosity. Since it can’t fit in a wind tunnel where NASA does its traditional testing, engineers looked toward the skies off Kauai. NASA had rigged the test vehicle with several GoPro cameras with the hope that viewers would follow the action live online.

SYDNEY - A super-enriched banana genetically engineered to improve the lives of millions of people in Africa will soon have its first human trial, which will test its effect on vitamin A levels, Australian researchers said Monday. The project plans to have the special banana varieties -- enriched with alpha and beta carotene which the body converts to vitamin A -- growing in Uganda by 2020. The bananas are now being sent to the United States, and it is expected that the six-week trial measuring how well they lift vitamin A levels in humans will begin soon. “Good science can make a massive difference here by enriching staple crops such as Ugandan bananas with pro-vitamin A and providing poor and subsistencefarming populations with nutritionally rewarding food,” said project leader Professor James Dale. The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) project, backed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, hopes to see conclusive results by year end. “We know our science will work,” Professor Dale said. “We made all the constructs, the genes that went into bananas, and put them into bananas here at QUT.” Dale said the Highland or East
African cooking banana was a staple food in East Africa, but had low levels of micro-nutrients, particularly pro-vitamin A and iron. “The consequences of vitamin A deficiency are dire with 650,000-700,000 children worldwide dying ... each year and at least another 300,000 going blind,” he said. Researchers decided that enriching the staple food was the best way to help ease the problem. While the modified banana looks the same on the outside, inside the flesh is more orange than a cream colour, but Dale said he did not expect this to be a problem. He said once the genetically modified bananas were approved for commercial cultivation in Uganda, the same technology could potentially be expanded to crops in other countries -- including Rwanda, parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Tanzania. “In West Africa farmers grow plantain bananas and the same technology could easily be transferred to that variety as well,” he said.
Dinosaur metabolism: not too hot, not too cold

WASHINGTON - Dinosaurs weren’t cold-blooded -- like modern-day reptiles -- nor were they warm-blooded -- like mammals and birds, according to a study out Friday aiming to answer a question that has intrigued paleontologists for decades. Instead, the prehistoric creatures’ metabolic rates were somewhere in between, said the report published in the US journal Science. The results suggest that the common practice of splitting species into two distinct groups -- depending on whether animals regulate their body temperature externally or internally -- is not accurate. And the answer could help shed light on dinosaur behavior, since warm-blooded animals tend to be more active and grow faster than their cold-blooded counterparts. To study the metabolism of the long-extinct creatures, a group of researchers led by
University of New Mexico biologist John Grady measured annual growth rings in the fossils of several dinosaurs and estimated growth patterns from birth to adulthood. They compared the results to a baseline of 400 other animal species, both extinct and still alive, and concluded that the dinosaurs’ metabolic rates were somewhere between cold- and warm-blooded animals. The researchers classified the dinosaurs in an intermediary category, “mesotherms,” with metabolic rates closest to those of tuna, certain sharks and the leatherback turtle. “These animals at times rely on internally-generated metabolic heat to maintain body temperatures, while being subject to external temperatures in others,” the researchers said, adding that the trait is not common among modern-day animals. The results could help scientists better understand ecosystems in the Mesozoic Era,
from 248 to 65 million years ago. The results could also be used to estimate the metabolic rates of other animals from the period. Scientists have long debated whether dinosaurs were coldor warm-blooded -- and since the 19th century have leaned toward the theory they were warm-blooded, based on physiological factors. That theory was bolstered by the discovery of speedy and powerful dinosaurs, like velociraptors, which scientists suggested must have been warm-blooded in order to burn enough energy. But the authors of the new study said the intermediary metabolism -- neither too fast nor too slow -- permitted dinosaurs to become much bigger than any other animal and to dominate the ecosystem. Warm-blooded animals typically need to eat a great deal to maintain their internal body temperature, forcing them into frequent hunts or to eat large quantities of plants.

KUTA - Indonesia is expected to become an industrialized country by 2035, with domestic industries contributing 29 percent to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), an industry ministry official said. “The development of industry is quite important for providing added values to products, enhancing jobs and improving the people’s welfare,” Secretary General of the Ministry of Industry Anshari Bukhari said during a discussion on the National Industrial Development Master Plan (RIPIN) recently. He added that even though Indonesia was an agrarian country, the development of industry was badly needed to increase the added values of agricultural products so that job opportunities could be increased and the people’s prosperity could be improved. “Advanced countries like the United States and Japan have consistently also developed their agriculture to meet the needs for food for their people,” he said. But to become an advanced nation, they developed their industries so that now those who work in the agricultural sector in the United States account for only three percent, and only several percent in Japan. Therefore, Anshari said that the development of industry should
be given serious attention in the future. The government must be intensively involved, not only in the policy making sector but also in the development of facilities and infrastructures. Thus far, many facilities and infrastructures needed by the people have been developed by private companies. “Ahead, the government should really play a role in the development of industry. Industrial development should not only be left to market mechanisms,” he added. He said that the concept that the government should seriously be involved in industrial development was contained in Law No. 3/2014 on industrial development. The law, which will be completed with six government regulations, five presidential decrees and 14 industrial ministerial decisions, regulates that the government should develop industrial zones whose development, so far, has been given over to private firms. The government, based on the law, is also directed to develop roads,
infrastructures, ports and energy. The ministry of industry hoped that in 2035 the nation¿s industrial infrastructures would become strong and have a highly competitive edge in the global market, based upon its innovation and technology. Through the RIPIN, the ministry of industry set itself a target that in 2035 the rate of the country’s industrial growth would reach 9.03 percent, industrial contribution to the GDP set at 29.09 percent, non oil and gas export contributions at 78.39 percent, importation of raw materials would be cut by 20 percent from the present level of about 60-65 percent, and additional investment will be increased by as much as Rp2,800 trillion. Further, in that year the number of workers to be absorbed is expected to reach 29.2 million people, higher than the 14.9 million in 2014. “So, we hope that a total of 800 thousand workers will be absorbed every year in the industrial sector,” the secretary general said.

SINGARAJA - A number of residents of Ancak hamlet, Bungkulan village, Sawan Subdistrict, protested against the development plan of a tower by one of the investors. Local residents protested it because the investor will build a 75 meters tower on the cemetery (setra alit) land claimed to be owned by the Ancak customary hamlet under territory of the Bungkulan customary village. It is said the process of leasing the land of cemetery spreading across 600 square meters has not been approved by all residents. Meanwhile, the village officials are touted to have leased the land to investors because the cemetery is considered as a village asset. As field observation of Bali Post on Sunday (Jun 15), the residents began the protest by gather at the local village hall. A number of residents also brought along some tools to fence the land claimed as the property of Bungkulan customary village. From the village hall, the residents went to the cemetery area or setra alit on foot. When arriving at the location, the residents immediately cut down bamboo around the cemetery area. The bamboo was used to fence the area planned to be built with a telecommunication tower. The cemetery area had been leveled by the lessee party using heavy equipment. Not long after, the cemetery land area was fenced. Residents put a signpost that says ‘this land belongs to customary village’ on the land. After placing the fence, residents re-assembled in
the village hall to discuss about the follow up of the cemetery area utilization. The previous meeting last Sunday ended with the discharge of the hamlet chief, Nyoman Deres. After that, the residents appointed Nyoman Sudiarta the acting hamlet chief of Ancak. One of the community leaders of Ancak hamlet, Putu Mudiasta, said the cemetery land posed the asset of Bungkulan village. At that time, the cemetery land was used for setra alit or for burying toddlers. However about a year ago, Satria customary hamlet also utilized the toddler cemetery, but today it is no longer being used because it already has a similar cemetery within its territory. Since then, there was a prohibition to bury toddlers at the cemetery of Ancak customary hamlet. Nevertheless, the residents of Ancak customary hamlet remained
to use the cemetery when there was a death at the hamlet. Later, the residents were shocked after knowing if the toddler cemetery had been leased to investor to build the tower. “Actually, the toddler cemetery is still used. A year ago, it has already been banned to bury a body. Even though the customary village has banned the use of it, it does not necessarily mean if the land of customary village can be utilized, let alone be leased to investors. We just knew it after the heavy equipment leveled the land,” he said. According to Mudiasta, after knowing the plan of investor to build the tower, the residents held a meeting. In the meeting, the residents stated their objection if the land was leased to investor to build the tower. People refused because the process of leasing the land was
not socialized to residents, chiefly residents of the Ancak hamlet. In addition, the residents had not received any explanation from the lessee regarding the content of agreement including the contribution to be submitted to the Ancak customary hamlet. Even, there was allegation on manipulation of the approval signature of residents for the land leasing. “We have already held a meeting with residents and rejected the tower construction because the land leasing is without consultation to residents,” he explained. Similar opinion was disclosed by a community figure, Nyoman Suderawan. He said the Bungkulan customary village had actually disseminated a notification letter to representatives of residents at each customary hamlet regarding the leasing plan to the cemetery land at Ancak hamlet. However, the letter was not followed up by the representatives of Kertha Desa to their respective customary hamlet. Such condition caused residents of Ancak customary hamlet to protest because they were never involved in the utilization of the cemetery land. “Representative of Kertha Desa
did not follow up the plan, so that people did not know about the plan. As a result, the residents spontaneously take action to reject the tower construction,” he said. To follow up the issues, added Mudiasta, the residents planned to browse the land ownership document to the National Land Agency (BPN) of Buleleng. It happened because all this time the residents knew if the land of customary village was functioned for cemetery through generations. However, legally the certificate of the land was yet unknown so far. Residents of Ancak hamlet having the territory of the land remained to maintain and routinely performed mutual aid. If it was approved for the lease to investor, the residents hoped there would be clarity on the agreement and distribution of contribution obtained from the cemetery land lease. “We’ll browse first whether the land has owned a certificate because we’ve got information if the land has been certified. As residents covering the land area, we are still maintaining and responsible for the land, so we temporarily still preserve the customary asset in our area,” he added. (kmb38)

BANGKOK — From the day Thailand’s military coup leader seized power last month, he has promised unspecified reforms to restore stability and return to civilian rule and democracy. Yet, Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha has mentioned a striking obstacle to a “fully functional democracy” — elections. According to the general, elections themselves have contributed to years of bitter political division and sometimesviolent street protests in Thailand. The military says intractable turmoil forced it to step in and topple a government for the second time in a decade. “We need to solve many issues, from administration to the budget system to corruption,” Prayuth said in a recent radio address, “And even the starting point of democracy itself — the election.” He continued, “Parliamentary dictatorship has to be removed. All these have caused conflict and unhappiness among Thai people.” The statement was the strongest sign yet of what many analysts suspect is the true aim of the May 22 coup: limiting the impact of future elections in Thailand by relying more on appointed institutions or some other formula to limit majority rule. The elected government led by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra was weakened by six months of often massive protests and a succession
of court rulings. Anti-government protesters blocking polling places and a subsequent court ruling scuttled February elections that Yingluck’s party had been widely expected to win. Opponents of the ousted government are intent on removing the influence of Yingluck’s brother, Thaksin Shinawatra, the billionaire former prime minister who was himself ousted in a 2006 military coup. He has lived in self-imposed exile for years to avoid serving time for corruption charges he says were politically motivated, and it was a proposal to grant him amnesty that sparked the protests against his sister’s government. Thaksin’s supporters have won every election since 2001, to the ire of many in Thailand who see
him as a corrupt demagogue who abuses power and buys votes with populist promises. RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. — Wrapping up a weekend away with his family, U.S. President Barack Obama was returning to Washington Monday faced with an impending choice on how to act to stop violent insurgents bringing chaos to Iraq. The White House said Obama got several updates on the crisis in phone calls from National Security Adviser Susan Rice during his weekend stay with his wife, daughter Malia and friends in the Palm Springs area. Obama said as he left for the trip Friday that he told his national security team to come up with options for U.S. assistance to deal with the worst instability in Iraq since the U.S. withdrawal in 2011. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Rice’s telephone briefings included updates on developments in Iraq, options being discussed for action and the movement of some staff out of the embassy in Baghdad amid the threat posed by the al-Qaida inspired insurgency. Obama said Friday that he would take several days to review a wide range of options for action in Iraq, although he ruled out the possibility of sending in American ground troops. Administration officials said other options being weighed include strikes using drones or manned aircraft, as well as boosts in surveillance and intelligence gathering, including satellite coverage and other monitoring efforts. Obama said the violence “should be a wake-up call” to the Iraqi government to improve sectarian relations and improve its security force. “We can’t do it for them. And in the absence of this type of political effort, short-term military action, including any assistance we might provide, won’t succeed,” Obama said. Iraqi leaders have been pleading with the U.S. for additional help to combat the insurgency for more than a year. While the U.S. has sold Iraq military equipment, the Obama administration has resisted drone strikes.

But S&P warned that the rating could be imperiled if Britain leaves the European Union, a move the country’s Conservative Party has pledged to put to a referendum in 2017 if it wins the next general election. Defecting from the European Union would be a significant blow because the U.K. has considerable trade ties to the region and could lose inbound investments, S&P said. For now, S&P sees mostly positive signs. The report foresees the U.K. economy expanding by nearly 3 percent this year and 2.5 percent next year. S&P is optimistic about worker productivity and wages increasing. The agency is also encouraged with progress being made on the U.K.’s government budget deficits. After adding it all up, S&P concluded there is only a one-in-three chance of a credit downgrade during the next two years.

However, I personally do not pursue the ‘world’ because it does not guarantee the survival of a company such as a hotel or villa,” he explained. Most importantly in this matter, he continued, how was the role of government and relevant administrator in the Tri Hita Karana World. Had the employees of all hotels and villas possessing the predicate been actually prosperous? “They should really follow it up in appropriate with environmental concepts. Otherwise, it should be reviewed again. For instance, there is a hotel, but its surrounding areas have no vegetation. So, it is not in accordance with the concept of Tri Hita Karana,” he said. Meanwhile, Rami Adnyana serving as former Chairman of the Ubud Hotel Association (2008-2010), had conducted various programs such as plastic campaign by performing continuous beach cleanup. BEIJING — China rejected a suggestion by the Philippines on Monday for a regionwide ban on construction in the South China Sea after Beijing began building a school on a rugged outpost it created to strengthen its claims to disputed waters. Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario said he will propose that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations call for such a moratorium. “I think we would use the international community to step up and to say that we need to manage the tensions in the South China Sea before it gets out of hand,” del Rosario said. NAIROBI, Kenya — Dozens of extremists wielding automatic weapons attacked a small Kenyan coastal town for hours, assaulting the police station, setting two hotels on fire, and spraying bullets into the street. At least 48 people were killed, officials said Monday. The assault in Mpeketoni began around 8 p.m. local time on Sunday night as residents were watching World Cup matches on TV and lasted until early Monday, meeting little resistance from Kenya’s security forces. At the Breeze View Hotel, the gunmen pulled the men aside and ordered the women to watch as they killed them, saying it was what Kenyan troops are doing to Somali men inside Somalia, a police commander said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to share that detail of the attack. Authorities blamed alShabab, Somalia’s al-Qaida-linked terror group, who have vowed to carry out terror attacks to avenge the Kenyan military presence in Somali. Along with its Somali fighters, the group also has many Kenyan adherents. Kenya’s top police commander, David Kimaiyo, said the death toll was 48. A police spokeswoman said authorities believe that several dozen attackers took part.

Even if something happened, the Indonesian Military will remain solid as there is only one command,” Moeldoko stressed. With regard to the village supervisory non-commissioned officer (Babinsa) case, which allegedly swayed public opinion in favor of a particular candidate, Moeldoko reiterated that it should have been closed since there was no Babinsa’s member who was not neutral. “There is an issue that Babinsa is not neutral in Sumedang (West Java); it is nonsense. I do not like the judgment, which accused Babinsa. If I was not firm, these issues will spread even more,” he noted. General Moeldoko also instructed the Babinsa and all military entities to work hard with regard to their territorial duty and pointed out that a sanction will be imposed for every violation. “Therefore, I call on all senior officers to provide security to the people of Indonesia. TANGERANG - A drug dealer identified by the initials, AB or AS, was shot dead by a police officer at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, for resisting an arrest attempt. AB or AS, was an Indonesian national and a member of the international drug mafia, Head of the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport police’s anti-illicit drug unit Commissioner Guntur stated on Monday. The government has planned to build 800 units of rusunawa this year and about 300 of them have been developed. “The budget for the development of the rusunawa project is set at about Rp1.4 to Rp1.5 trillion. I hope that the next government will raise the budget to Rp15 trillion per annum,” Faridz explained.Faridz stated that if the government sets a budget of that amount, it will be able to build some 27 thousand units of rusunawa across the country. The minister has forecast that currently, Indonesia is short of 27 thousand units of rusunawa. “Rusunawa is basically designed for civil servants, military or police personnel, and laborers. The government has not yet taken into account students from Islamic boarding schools. Therefore, I hope that the government will start paying attention to them by allocating flats,” the minister emphasized.

He used to say that tourism in Bali likened to a sinking ship, to heavy on the south and too light on the north. Dani Pedrosa said he had no issues with Honda team-mate Marc Marquez after their last-lap clash in MotoGP’s Catalunya Grand Prix and no regrets about his race. Pedrosa came the closest to beating Marquez that he has all year as he launched a series of attacks on his race-leading team-mate over the closing laps, when the pair were able to break away from what had been a four-way fight with the Yamahas of Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo. With his team leading 1-0 at halftime because of an own goal, coach Alejandro Sabella ditched his cautious lineup, bringing Gonzalo Higuain off the bench to play up front with Aguero and Messi. Suddenly, the man many consider the world’s best player finally looked like a star on the game’s biggest stage. “The first half was very difficult,” said Messi, the Barcelona star who has usually played better for his club than he has for his country. “I was alone and Kun (forward Sergio Aguero) was alone just like I was.” After Sead Kolasinovic’s own goal in the third minute, Bosnia — playing in its first World Cup — eased into the match and was the equal of the two-time World Cup champions. “The early lineup took its toll on us,” Sabella acknowledged. “It
was an even game until we got going in the second half.” To start the half, Sabella put in Higuain for midfielder Maxi Rodriguez, and midfielder Fernando Gago replaced defender Hugo Campagnaro. That gave Messi support, allowing him to step back and find more space to roam and attack on the dribble. “When Higuain came in the team lifted itself and began to create chances,” Sabella said. “But we do have a few things to im-

PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil — Goal-line technology did its job when it counted at the World Cup, although not without a little bit of confusion. France was the beneficiary of the first World Cup goal awarded thanks to the new system being used in Brazil, which ruled correctly that Honduras goalkeeper Noel Valladares had narrowly spilled the ball over his own line. That gave France its second goal in a 3-0 win and helped rule out any real controversy in an situation that would have been difficult for any referee to judge correctly. However, Honduras players and coach Luis Suarez were still angry after the video replay showed two separate incidents and therefore conflicting results. The goal came in the 48th minute, when Karim Benzema’s shot hit the far post and rebounded to Valladares, who fumbled the ball into the goal. The seven video cameras trained on the goal established that the ball had briefly crossed the line by a few inches, alerting the referee on his watch with a flashing “GOAL,” before the ball was pushed out again by Valladares. The confusion happened when the system showed replays of Benzema’s shot hitting the post with the verdict “NO GOAL” before continuing to show the rest of the sequence and the ball crossing the line. The change infuriated the Honduras players, some of whom remonstrated with referee Sandro Ricci, while Honduras coach Luis Suarez bickered with France coach Didier Deschamps. At the end of the match, they hugged and made up. “Well, I wasn’t angry because they accepted the goal. I was angry because they didn’t accept the goal. The first decision was ‘No goal’ and then the machine said it was a goal,” Suarez said through a translator. “So I don’t know what to think. That’s the point. With his team leading 1-0 at halftime because of an own goal, coach Alejandro Sabella ditched his cautious lineup, bringing Gonzalo Higuain off the bench to play up front with Aguero and Messi. Suddenly, the man many consider the world’s best player finally looked like a star on the game’s biggest stage. “The first half was very difficult,” said Messi, the Barcelona star who has usually played better for his club than he has for his country. “I was alone and Kun (forward Sergio Aguero) was alone just like I was.” After Sead Kolasinovic’s own goal in the third minute, Bosnia — playing in its first World Cup — eased into the match and was the equal of the two-time World Cup champions. “The early lineup took its toll on us,” Sabella acknowledged. “It
was an even game until we got going in the second half.” To start the half, Sabella put in Higuain for midfielder Maxi Rodriguez, and midfielder Fernando Gago replaced defender Hugo Campagnaro. PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil — Goal-line technology did its job when it counted at the World Cup, although not without a little bit of confusion. France was the beneficiary of the first World Cup goal awarded thanks to the new system being used in Brazil, which ruled correctly that Honduras goalkeeper Noel Valladares had narrowly spilled the ball over his own line. That gave France its second goal in a 3-0 win and helped rule out any real controversy in an situation that would have been difficult for any referee to judge correctly. However, Honduras players and coach Luis Suarez were still angry after the video replay showed two separate incidents and therefore conflicting results. The goal came in the 48th minute, when Karim Benzema’s shot hit the far post and rebounded to Valladares, who fumbled the ball into the goal. The seven video cameras trained on the goal established that the ball had briefly crossed the line by a few inches, alerting the referee on his watch with a flashing “GOAL,” before the ball was pushed out again by Valladares. The confusion happened when the system showed replays of Benzema’s shot hitting the post with the verdict “NO GOAL” before continuing to show the rest of the sequence and the ball crossing the line. The change infuriated the Honduras players, some of whom remonstrated with referee Sandro Ricci, while Honduras coach Luis Suarez bickered with France coach Didier Deschamps. BULELENG - When you read or hear Binaria, you may imagine it must be somewhere in West Java or even in somewhere in foreign country. But it is a matter of fact, a string and beach, precisely on the village of Kalibukbuk, part of approximately 122 km long North Bali’s beach and acknowledged as the centre of Lovina Beach. The statue was built by the members of Indonesia Hotels and Restaurants Association (IHRA) Buleleng Chapter under the leadership of Ketut Englan, in the time of construction. Perched on the top of a concrete column is a statue of a crowned dolphin. The crown meant to give tribute to the late Anak Agung Panji Tisna that is recognized as the pioneer of tourism development in Bali particularly in the Lovina Beach area. He built his rest house in the village of Tukad Cebol and now is named the village of Kaliasem. He was a writer and wrote many novels and those have been translated into many languages. Due his poipilarity he was visited by many guests nationally or internationally. He then built a accommodation next to his guest house and it was named “Tasik Madu “ (Sea of Honey”. He used to say that tourism in Bali likened to a sinking ship, to heavy on the south and too light on the north. This unbalanced of tourism in Bali he tried to address the situation by attracting visitors as well tourist o the north by establishing an accommodation. It no exaggerating to say that was awarded “Karya Karana”. A prestigious ward of acknowledgement and also he was named “The father of Tourism in Bali” to certify his efforts in developing tourism in

Dani Pedrosa said he had no issues with Honda team-mate Marc Marquez after their last-lap clash in MotoGP’s Catalunya Grand Prix and no regrets about his race. Pedrosa came the closest to beating Marquez that he has all year as he launched a series of attacks on his race-leading team-mate over the closing laps, when the pair were able to break away from what had been a four-way fight with the Yamahas of Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo. On the last lap Pedrosa twice managed to get past Marquez only to run wide enough for the sister Honda to repass, and they then touched at Turn 11 as Marquez hugged the inside line and Pedrosa tried to get a final run. Though both stayed upright, Pedrosa slid very wide and lost second to Rossi. “I tried my best in the last couple of laps but immediately [Marquez] started changing his lines - taking much tighter lines,” said Pedrosa. “So I found myself with less space and a couple of times

BEIJING — China rejected a suggestion by the Philippines on Monday for a regionwide ban on construction in the South China Sea after Beijing began building a school on a rugged outpost it created to strengthen its claims to disputed waters. Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario said he will propose that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations call for such a moratorium. “I think we would use the international community to step up and to say that we need to manage the tensions in the South China Sea before it gets out of hand,” del Rosario said. In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters that the Philippines was making “irresponsible remarks.” She said China was committed to resolving issues with countries on a bilateral basis, and that island disputes between China and the Philippines were not an issue for ASEAN. Hua said the Philippines was constructing its own facilities in the Spratlys, an island chain which is claimed by both countries, having announced plans to upgrade a runway and naval facilities and build an airport. “The Philippines has been taking provocative actions to escalate tensions on the one hand, and making irresponsible remarks about what China has legitimately done within her sovereign rights on the other,” Hua said. “That is totally unjustifiable.” China claims virtually the entire South China Sea, and parts of it are also claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Brunei and Malaysia. Some see the competing claims as a possible flashpoint for a major conflict. On Saturday, China began building a school on the largest island in the disputed Paracel chain to serve the children of military personnel and others, two years after it established a city there to administer the South China Sea area it claims, including potentially oil-rich islands. Vietnam also claims the Paracel chain. Tensions in the area have escalated since China placed an oil rig last month in waters about 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the islands, leading to confrontations between Chinese and Vietnamese vessels. Del Rosario told ABS-CBN News that China is accelerating its “expansion agenda” in the South China Sea to get it completed before ASEAN countries and China draw up a code of conduct that sets rules to prevent incidents in the region.

NAIROBI, Kenya — Dozens of extremists wielding automatic weapons attacked a small Kenyan coastal town for hours, assaulting the police station, setting two hotels on fire, and spraying bullets into the street. At least 48 people were killed, officials said Monday. The assault in Mpeketoni began around 8 p.m. local time on Sunday night as residents were watching World Cup matches on TV and lasted until early Monday, meeting little resistance from Kenya’s security forces. At the Breeze View Hotel, the gunmen pulled the men aside and ordered the women to watch as they killed them, saying it was what Kenyan troops are doing to Somali men inside Somalia, a police commander said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to share that detail of the attack. Authorities blamed alShabab, Somalia’s al-Qaida-linked terror group, who have vowed to carry out terror attacks to avenge the Kenyan military presence in Somali. Along with its Somali fighters, the group also has many Kenyan adherents. Kenya’s top police commander, David Kimaiyo, said the death toll was 48. A police spokeswoman said authorities believe that several dozen attackers took part.

With regard to the village supervisory non-commissioned officer (Babinsa) case, which allegedly swayed public opinion in favor of a particular candidate, Moeldoko reiterated that it should have been closed since there was no Babinsa’s member who was not neutral. “There is an issue that Babinsa is not neutral in Sumedang (West Java); it is nonsense. I do not like the judgment, which accused Babinsa. If I was not firm, these issues will spread even more,” he noted. General Moeldoko also instructed the Babinsa and all military entities to work hard with regard to their territorial duty and pointed out that a sanction will be imposed for every violation. “Therefore, I call on all senior officers to provide security to the people of Indonesia. TANGERANG - A drug dealer identified by the initials, AB or AS, was shot dead by a police officer at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, for resisting an arrest attempt. AB or AS, was an Indonesian national and a member of the international drug mafia, Head of the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport police’s anti-illicit drug unit Commissioner Guntur stated on Monday. The drug dealer was cornered and soon to be arrested when he resisted and tried to hit the police officers with a motorcycle, Guntur claimed. A police officer identified with the initial as chief brigadier JK suffered a broken bone in his leg after being hit by the motorcycle. Another police officer then
shot AB in the chest. “Because he resisted and tried to escape, a police officer shot him. He died on the way to the hospital,” Guntur added. Following the move, the police have arrested three members of AB, namely AD who acted as the drug trafficker in South Kalimantan, IP

If this plan is delayed (and landed houses are built), we are afraid that we will have no more land left for rice cultivation,” he added. The government has planned to build 800 units of rusunawa this year and about 300 of them have been developed. “The budget for the development of the rusunawa project is set at about Rp1.4 to Rp1.5 trillion. I hope that the next government will raise the budget to Rp15 trillion per annum,” Faridz explained.Faridz stated that if the government sets a budget of that amount, it will be able to build some 27 thousand units of rusunawa across the country. The minister has forecast that currently, Indonesia is short of 27 thousand units of rusunawa. “Rusunawa is basically designed for civil servants, military or police personnel, and laborers. The government has not yet taken into account students from Islamic boarding schools. Therefore, I hope that the government will start paying attention to them by allocating flats,” the minister emphasized.

For now, S&P sees mostly positive signs. The report foresees the U.K. economy expanding by nearly 3 percent this year and 2.5 percent next year. SINGARAJA - A number of residents of Ancak hamlet, Bungkulan village, Sawan Subdistrict, protested against the development plan of a tower by one of the investors. Local residents protested it because the investor will build a 75 meters tower on the cemetery (setra alit) land claimed to be owned by the Ancak customary hamlet under territory of the Bungkulan customary village. It is said the process of leasing the land of cemetery spreading across 600 square meters has not been approved by all residents. Meanwhile, the village officials are touted to have leased the land to investors because the cemetery is considered as a village asset. As field observation of Bali Post on Sunday (Jun 15), the residents began the protest by gather at the local village hall. A number of residents also brought along some tools to fence the land claimed as the property of Bungkulan customary village. From the village hall, the residents went to the cemetery area or setra alit on foot. When arriving at the location, the residents immediately cut down bamboo around the cemetery area. The bamboo was used to fence the area planned to be built with a telecommunication tower. The cemetery area had been leveled by the lessee party using heavy equipment. Not long after, the cemetery land area was fenced. Residents put a signpost that says ‘this land belongs to customary village’ on the land. After placing the fence, residents re-assembled in
the village hall to discuss about the follow up of the cemetery area utilization. The previous meeting last Sunday ended with the discharge of the hamlet chief, Nyoman Deres. After that, the residents appointed Nyoman Sudiarta the acting hamlet chief of Ancak. One of the community leaders of Ancak hamlet, Putu Mudiasta, said the cemetery land posed the asset of Bungkulan village. At that time, the cemetery land was used for setra alit or for burying toddlers. However about a year ago, Satria customary hamlet also utilized the toddler cemetery, but today it is no longer being used because it already has a similar cemetery within its territory. Since then, there was a prohibition to bury toddlers at the cemetery of Ancak customary hamlet. Nevertheless, the residents of Ancak customary hamlet remained
to use the cemetery when there was a death at the hamlet. Later, the residents were shocked after knowing if the toddler cemetery had been leased to investor to build the tower. “Actually, the toddler cemetery is still used. A year ago, it has already been banned to bury a body. Even though the customary village has banned the use of it, it does not necessarily mean if the land of customary village can be utilized, let alone be leased to investors. We just knew it after the heavy equipment leveled the land,” he said. According to Mudiasta, after knowing the plan of investor to build the tower, the residents held a meeting. In the meeting, the residents stated their objection if the land was leased to investor to build the tower. People refused because the process of leasing the land was
not socialized to residents, chiefly residents of the Ancak hamlet. In addition, the residents had not received any explanation from the lessee regarding the content of agreement including the contribution to be submitted to the Ancak customary hamlet. Even, there was allegation on manipulation of the approval signature of residents for the land leasing. “We have already held a meeting with residents and rejected the tower construction because the land leasing is without consultation to residents,” he explained. Similar opinion was disclosed by a community figure, Nyoman Suderawan. He said the Bungkulan customary village had actually disseminated a notification letter to representatives of residents at each customary hamlet regarding the leasing plan to the cemetery land at Ancak hamlet. However, the letter was not followed up by the representatives of Kertha Desa to their respective customary hamlet. Such condition caused residents of Ancak customary hamlet to protest because they were never involved in the utilization of the cemetery land. “Representative of Kertha Desa
did not follow up the plan, so that people did not know about the plan. As a result, the residents spontaneously take action to reject the tower construction,” he said. To follow up the issues, added Mudiasta, the residents planned to browse the land ownership document to the National Land Agency (BPN) of Buleleng. It happened because all this time the residents knew if the land of customary village was functioned for cemetery through generations. However, legally the certificate of the land was yet unknown so far. Residents of Ancak hamlet having the territory of the land remained to maintain and routinely performed mutual aid. If it was approved for the lease to investor, the residents hoped there would be clarity on the agreement and distribution of contribution obtained from the cemetery land lease. “We’ll browse first whether the land has owned a certificate because we’ve got information if the land has been certified. As residents covering the land area, we are still maintaining and responsible for the land, so we temporarily still preserve the customary asset in our area,” he added. (kmb38)

BANGKOK — From the day Thailand’s military coup leader seized power last month, he has promised unspecified reforms to restore stability and return to civilian rule and democracy. Yet, Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha has mentioned a striking obstacle to a “fully functional democracy” — elections. According to the general, elections themselves have contributed to years of bitter political division and sometimesviolent street protests in Thailand. The military says intractable turmoil forced it to step in and topple a government for the second time in a decade. “We need to solve many issues, from administration to the budget system to corruption,” Prayuth said in a recent radio address, “And even the starting point of democracy itself — the election.” He continued, “Parliamentary dictatorship has to be removed. All these have caused conflict and unhappiness among Thai people.” The statement was the strongest sign yet of what many analysts suspect is the true aim of the May 22 coup: limiting the impact of future elections in Thailand by relying more on appointed institutions or some other formula to limit majority rule. The elected government led by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra was weakened by six months of often massive protests and a succession
of court rulings. Anti-government protesters blocking polling places and a subsequent court ruling scuttled February elections that Yingluck’s party had been widely expected to win. Opponents of the ousted government are intent on removing the influence of Yingluck’s brother, Thaksin Shinawatra, the billionaire former prime minister who was himself ousted in a 2006 military coup. He has lived in self-imposed exile for years to avoid serving time for corruption charges he says were politically motivated, and it was a proposal to grant him amnesty that sparked the protests against his sister’s government. Thaksin’s supporters have won every election since 2001, to the ire of many in Thailand who see
him as a corrupt demagogue who abuses power and buys votes with populist promises. The White House said Obama got several updates on the crisis in phone calls from National Security Adviser Susan Rice during his weekend stay with his wife, daughter Malia and friends in the Palm Springs area. Obama said as he left for the trip Friday that he told his national security team to come up with options for U.S. assistance to deal with the worst instability in Iraq since the U.S. withdrawal in 2011. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Rice’s telephone briefings included updates on developments in Iraq, options being discussed for action and the movement of some staff out of the embassy in Baghdad amid the threat posed by the al-Qaida inspired insurgency. Obama said Friday that he would take several days to review a wide range of options for action in Iraq, although he ruled out the possibility of sending in American ground troops. Administration officials said other options being weighed include strikes using drones or manned aircraft, as well as boosts in surveillance and intelligence gathering, including satellite coverage and other monitoring efforts. Obama said the violence “should be a wake-up call” to the Iraqi government to improve sectarian relations and improve its security force. “We can’t do it for them. And in the absence of this type of political effort, short-term military action, including any assistance we might provide, won’t succeed,” Obama said. Iraqi leaders have been pleading with the U.S. for additional help to combat the insurgency for more than a year. While the U.S. has sold Iraq military equipment, the Obama administration has resisted drone strikes.

LOS ANGELES — NASA hopes to try again to launch a “flying saucer” into Earth’s atmosphere to test Mars mission technology after losing the chance because of bad weather, project managers said Thursday. The space agency is working with the U.S. Navy on the Hawaiian island of Kauai to see if it can get the experimental flight off the ground in late June. During the current two-week launch window, the team came “tantalizingly close,” but winds spoiled every opportunity, said project manager Mark Adler of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Winds must be calm for a helium balloon to carry the discshaped vehicle over the Pacific so it doesn’t stray into no-fly zones. “We’re ready to go. We’re not giving up,” Adler said. NASA has invested $150 million in the project so far, and extending the launch window would come with some cost. If the flight
doesn’t happen this summer, it would be postponed until next year. The mission is designed to test a new supersonic vehicle and giant parachute in Earth’s stratosphere where conditions are similar to the red planet. For decades, NASA relied on the same parachute design to slow spacecraft streaking through the thin Martian atmosphere. The 1-ton Curiosity rover that landed in 2012 used the same basic parachute as the twin Viking landers in 1976. With plans to land heavier payloads and eventually astronauts, NASA needed to develop new drag devices and a stronger parachute. Measuring 110 feet (33.5 meters) in diameter, the new parachute is twice as large as the one that carried Curiosity. Since it can’t fit in a wind tunnel where NASA does its traditional testing, engineers looked toward the skies off Kauai. NASA had rigged the test vehicle with several GoPro cameras with the hope that viewers would follow the action live online.

SYDNEY - A super-enriched banana genetically engineered to improve the lives of millions of people in Africa will soon have its first human trial, which will test its effect on vitamin A levels, Australian researchers said Monday. The project plans to have the special banana varieties -- enriched with alpha and beta carotene which the body converts to vitamin A -- growing in Uganda by 2020. The bananas are now being sent to the United States, and it is expected that the six-week trial measuring how well they lift vitamin A levels in humans will begin soon. “Good science can make a massive difference here by enriching staple crops such as Ugandan bananas with pro-vitamin A and providing poor and subsistencefarming populations with nutritionally rewarding food,” said project leader Professor James Dale. The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) project, backed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, hopes to see conclusive results by year end. “We know our science will work,” Professor Dale said. “We made all the constructs, the genes that went into bananas, and put them into bananas here at QUT.” Dale said the Highland or East
African cooking banana was a staple food in East Africa, but had low levels of micro-nutrients, particularly pro-vitamin A and iron. “The consequences of vitamin A deficiency are dire with 650,000-700,000 children worldwide dying ... each year and at least another 300,000 going blind,” he said. Researchers decided that enriching the staple food was the best way to help ease the problem. While the modified banana looks the same on the outside, inside the flesh is more orange than a cream colour, but Dale said he did not expect this to be a problem. He said once the genetically modified bananas were approved for commercial cultivation in Uganda, the same technology could potentially be expanded to crops in other countries -- including Rwanda, parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Tanzania. “In West Africa farmers grow plantain bananas and the same technology could easily be transferred to that variety as well,” he said.
Dinosaur metabolism: not too hot, not too cold

WASHINGTON - Dinosaurs weren’t cold-blooded -- like modern-day reptiles -- nor were they warm-blooded -- like mammals and birds, according to a study out Friday aiming to answer a question that has intrigued paleontologists for decades. Instead, the prehistoric creatures’ metabolic rates were somewhere in between, said the report published in the US journal Science. The results suggest that the common practice of splitting species into two distinct groups -- depending on whether animals regulate their body temperature externally or internally -- is not accurate. And the answer could help shed light on dinosaur behavior, since warm-blooded animals tend to be more active and grow faster than their cold-blooded counterparts. To study the metabolism of the long-extinct creatures, a group of researchers led by
University of New Mexico biologist John Grady measured annual growth rings in the fossils of several dinosaurs and estimated growth patterns from birth to adulthood. They compared the results to a baseline of 400 other animal species, both extinct and still alive, and concluded that the dinosaurs’ metabolic rates were somewhere between cold- and warm-blooded animals. The researchers classified the dinosaurs in an intermediary category, “mesotherms,” with metabolic rates closest to those of tuna, certain sharks and the leatherback turtle. “These animals at times rely on internally-generated metabolic heat to maintain body temperatures, while being subject to external temperatures in others,” the researchers said, adding that the trait is not common among modern-day animals. The results could help scientists better understand ecosystems in the Mesozoic Era,
from 248 to 65 million years ago. The results could also be used to estimate the metabolic rates of other animals from the period. Scientists have long debated whether dinosaurs were coldor warm-blooded -- and since the 19th century have leaned toward the theory they were warm-blooded, based on physiological factors. Indonesia to become industrialized country by 2035

KUTA - Indonesia is expected to become an industrialized country by 2035, with domestic industries contributing 29 percent to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), an industry ministry official said. “The development of industry is quite important for providing added values to products, enhancing jobs and improving the people’s welfare,” Secretary General of the Ministry of Industry Anshari Bukhari said during a discussion on the National Industrial Development Master Plan (RIPIN) recently. He added that even though Indonesia was an agrarian country, the development of industry was badly needed to increase the added values of agricultural products so that job opportunities could be increased and the people’s prosperity could be improved. “Advanced countries like the United States and Japan have consistently also developed their agriculture to meet the needs for food for their people,” he said. But to become an advanced nation, they developed their industries so that now those who work in the agricultural sector in the United States account for only three percent, and only several percent in Japan. Therefore, Anshari said that the development of industry should
be given serious attention in the future. The government must be intensively involved, not only in the policy making sector but also in the development of facilities and infrastructures. Thus far, many facilities and infrastructures needed by the people have been developed by private companies. “Ahead, the government should really play a role in the development of industry. Industrial development should not only be left to market mechanisms,” he added. He said that the concept that the government should seriously be involved in industrial development was contained in Law No. 3/2014 on industrial development. The law, which will be completed with six government regulations, five presidential decrees and 14 industrial ministerial decisions, regulates that the government should develop industrial zones whose development, so far, has been given over to private firms. The government, based on the law, is also directed to develop roads,
infrastructures, ports and energy. The ministry of industry hoped that in 2035 the nation¿s industrial infrastructures would become strong and have a highly competitive edge in the global market, based upon its innovation and technology. Through the RIPIN, the ministry of industry set itself a target that in 2035 the rate of the country’s industrial growth would reach 9.03 percent, industrial contribution to the GDP set at 29.09 percent, non oil and gas export contributions at 78.39 percent, importation of raw materials would be cut by 20 percent from the present level of about 60-65 percent, and additional investment will be increased by as much as Rp2,800 trillion. Further, in that year the number of workers to be absorbed is expected to reach 29.2 million people, higher than the 14.9 million in 2014. “So, we hope that a total of 800 thousand workers will be absorbed every year in the industrial sector,” the secretary general said.

DENPASAR - Dolanan dance featured in the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) by Studio Kapucuk Demulih, Bangli. This dance is riveting hundreds of spectators, both local and foreign. The dance that followed by at least 60 children performed at Angsoka Stage. “We’re prepare this dance for only two weeks. But seeing how this show can entertain audiences, we’re very pleased,” said Chief of Kapucuk Demulih Troupe, I Nengah Darsana on Monday, June 16. Darsana explained that Dolanan Dance is traditional children game that combined movement and dialogue. “The performance tells the story entitled “Rare Angon Story” about Balinese children who dream of seeing Bali in ancient times,” he explained. Unfortunately, he said, all of it was gone along with the times. Thus, through this dance, there is an implied message. Udayana Military Command presents fragmentary show TROOPS of the IX/Udayana Military Regional Command participated in the opening ceremony of the Bali Arts Festival (BAF). However, the appearance in the BAF XXXVI 2014 immediately received a warm welcome from the people of Bali. Other than in the parade at Bajra Sandi, Renon, Denpasar, the presentation of a number of dances was also performed at the Ardha Candra open stage, Denpasar Art Center, Saturday night (Jun 14). Hundreds of soldiers of the Indonesian Military (TNI) were joining the show. In the presentation, four colossal dances were staged for the people of Bali. At the closing session, Adjutant General Team Leader of the IX/Udayana Military Regional Command, Eko Waluyo Setyantoro, with all the other dancers sang a song composed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, entitled Matahari Bersinar (The Sun Shines). According to Eko Waluyo, the participation of his party in the annual art extravaganza this year was inspired by the idea of the Commander of the IX / Udayana Regional Military Command, Wisnu Bawa Tenaya. All the dances performed were the creation of the former commander of the Kopassus, Maj. Gen. Wisnu. Even, there were four dances performed namely the Janger Dance, Nusantara Menyama Braya (National Unity) Dance, Mutual Aid Fragmentary Show reflecting the military-police oneness with people and Red-White Dance. Each dance, said Eko Waluyo, had a different meaning. Janger Dance was one of the dances of Indonesia in general and Bali in particular and very well known both at home and overseas. It was predicted to have been hundreds of years old and the groups performing the show spread out across Southern Bali area. The Janger Dance itself was exhibited by some people in pairs. Women and men were dancing and singing alternately. The dance, he added, depicted the story of couples who were in mutual love and attempted to mutually establish relationship. It belonged to social dance which exhibited a certain moment as an entertainment. It showed off the basic of Balinese dance movements and they were not difficult to do. was accompanied by traditional pop songs from various regions in Indonesia. The dance illustrated the unity and integrity of the nation and the Republic of Indonesia consisting of diverse culture, local language, race, ethnicity, religion and belief. The dance revealed the meaning on how to increase the spirit of tolerance among the differences of race and religion in order to become a perfect union and complement one another and strengthen the patriotism. Well, then, the Mutual Aid Fragmentary Show depicted the oneness of military-police with people. This dance told about a safe, peaceful and prosperous society as well as the life dynamics of the agrarian society leading to universal welfare. Universal welfare needed to be supported by the sense of security and peace for all people. Without the sense of security and peace, it would be difficult to materialize the prosperity. When any disturbance against the security occurred, the military getting the information would immediately came to put it down. The role of military and police here was to support and assist in overcoming the difficulties of the people around them through the rural army social development (TMMD). The last one was the Red-White Dance. The dance had significance to rekindle the high nationalism and patriotism. The Red-White Dance had a philosophical meaning. Red meant bold and white meant holy. Red symbolized the human body, whereas white symbolized the human soul. Both complemented each other and enhanced for the triumph of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. “As the closing, with the other dancers I would like to sing a song entitled Matahari Bersinar composed by Mr. President SBY,” he said. A predatory fish emerges in Lake Buyan

BULELENG - Population of freshwater fish in the area of Lake Buyan, Pancasari village, Sukasada subdistrict, is feared to diminish. This happens becausepredatory fish emerges in the lake lately preying on the eggs or small fingerlings growing in Lake Buyan. This situation makes fishermen and anglers worry if the predatory fish is not exterminated, the freshwater fish population in the lake will continue to diminish and even be at risk of extinction. As information gathered, fishermen and anglers often found the predatory fish. The fish was often caught in the net or preyed on the hook baits thrown by the anglers. Fishermen and anglers called the predatory fish as the zebra fish. Physically, this fish has hard skin and sharp scales. As the name implies, the fish skin has black and white stripes with varying sizes. The zebra fish preys on the eggs and fingerlings growing in the lake. The emergence of zebra fish causes the freshwater fish population in Lake Buyan to be threatened and diminish dramatically. If this condition is left unchecked, the fish catch of fisherman is ascertained to decrease. Not only that, fishermen also worry if the fingerlings newly broadcast by local government cannot grow because they are first devoured by the predatory zebra fish. A fisherman said the zebra fish was known to have emerged since the past few months. No one knew where the zebra fish definitely came from. However, the zebra fish was alleged to accidentally come with the scatter of fingerlings frequently made recently in Lake Buyan. “Probably, the zebra fish inadvertently mixed with the fingerlings scattered so it breeds as it is today. Additionally, the zebra fish is an ornamental fish so it’s impossible to live in the lake. Moreover, emergence of the fish starts to occur within the past few months,” said the fisherman. Meanwhile, the Division Head of Business and Product Processing, Ketut Suwardana, with permission from the Head of Buleleng Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Nyoman Sutrisna confirmed if a predatory zebra fish had emerged in Lake Buyan
allegedly and preyed on eggs and freshwater fingerlings. Suwadarma said the Fishery and Maritime Affairs continued to search an effort in order to ensure the early emergence of the zebra fish. Unfortunately, the agency had difficulty to know the parties that had scattered fish and the species of fish was not known clearly. However, the search indicated there was information from fishermen and local residents that a few years ago there was a collector cultivating ornamental fish around the lake. However, production of the ornamental fingerlings was not sold. Therefore, the fingerlings were then scattered into the lake. Since the scatter of the ornamental fish, the zebra fish proliferated very quickly. Even, the zebra fish was easy to find on the edge of the lake. In addition, there was other evidence if it belonged to ornamental fish and was not an endemic fish in Lake Buyan. “Indeed, the zebra fish emerges but based on the search we’ve done there used to be a collector of ornamental fish. Unluckily, its fish was unsold so it was then scattered into the lake. If we associate with the zebra fish, it belongs to ornamental fish species. The zebra fish proliferates as there was previously a fish scatter and not endemic in the lake,” he said. According to Suwadarma, the attack of zebra fish had caused the freshwater fish population in the lake to be disrupted. Possibly it would have an impact on the decrease of fish population in the lake. It happened because the eggs and small freshwater fingerlings were preyed by the zebra fish. To overcome such condition, the Fishery and Maritime Affairs tried to capture the zebra fish together with fishermen and anglers. In order to intensify the hunt against the zebra fish with fishermen and anglers, the Fishery and Maritime Affairs would take advantage of the event like the Lake Buyan Festival on June 20, 2014 by organizing a contest to angle the zebra fish. With the contest, fishermen and anglers were intrigued to participate in the zebra fish hunt becoming the predator to other fish in Lake Buyan. (kmb38)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

The R-rated comedy “22 Jump Street” debuted in first place domestically with $60 million, followed by “How to Train Your Dragon 2” which opened with $50 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday. LOS ANGELES — Casey Kasem, the internationally famous radio host with the cheerful manner and gentle voice who became the king of the top 40 countdown with a syndicated show that ran for decades, died Sunday. He was 82. A statement issued by the Kasem family said Kasem died at 3:23 a.m. Sunday, on Father’s Day, surrounded by family and friends at a Washington state hospital. “Even though we know he is in a better place and no longer suffering, we are heartbroken,” wrote his daughter Kerri Kasem on Twitter and Facebook from the family. “The world will miss Casey Kasem, an incredible talent and humanitarian; we will miss our dad.” Kasem’s “American Top 40” began on July 4, 1970, in Los Angeles. The No. 1 song on his list then was Three Dog Night’s cover of Randy Newman’s “Mama Told Me Not to Come.” In his signoff, he would tell viewers: “And don’t forget: keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.” Media personality Ryan Seacrest, who took over the countdown from Kasem in 2004, said in a statement that Kasem’s death is a loss for radio listeners worldwide. Seacrest said that as a child he’d listen to Kasem’s show every weekend “and dream about someday becoming a radio DJ.” In recent years, Kasem was trapped in a feud between his three adult children and his second wife, former actress Jean Kasem. In 2013, his children filed a legal petition to gain control of his health care, alleging that Kasem was suffering from advanced Parkinson’s disease and that his wife was isolating him from friends and family members. Kasem also suffered from Lewy Body Disease, a form of dementia.

MANGUPURA - Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has mapped 16 tourist destinations in Indonesia having the potential to work on MICE market. The 16 destinations include Bali, Jakarta, Bandung, Balikpapan, Batam, Bintan, Jakarta, Lombok, Makassar, Manado, Medan, Padang, Palembang, Semarang, Solo, Surabaya and Yogyakarta. Central government also continues to push the existing resources in the region to improve in welcoming the meeting, incentive, convention and exhibition (MICE) tourism visits.

“So far, it is only Bali and Jakarta that can organize or meet the criteria of MICE. We’ve mapped out 16 MICE destinations other than Jakarta and Bali. Another destination, namely Medan, has met the criteria for regional events, but has not been able to hold an international convention and meeting,” said Director of Special Interest, Convention, Incentive and Event
Tourism Development, Akhyaruddin, in Kuta recently. He said that Jakarta and Bali had met the criteria to be MICE destination based on the mapping and classification of the 16 MICE destinations in Indonesia. The main problems owned by the 14 other destinations lay in the infrastructure and human resources. “Right now, there are only two
provinces complying with the criteria, namely Greater Jakarta and Bali. Meanwhile, the other destinations are still constrained by human resources and infrastructure,” he said. He hoped that local government continued to improve the quality of human resources, especially in the field of tourism. At present, all the countries in the world were
encouraging the tourism and creative economy. They aggressively developed both sectors. “In the future, the agenda of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy is to provide an understanding and socialization, especially to the 14 cities that have not qualified the criteria of MICE,” he said. According to him, MICE destination had more advantages and contributions to revenue from tourism than the usual tourist visits. MICE activities usually involved up to hundreds of participants with the length of stay reaching more than 12 days. “Unlike ordinary travelers, their length of stay maximally reaches 9 days, while the MICE participants can reach 12 days,” he
concluded. He mentioned that contribution of MICE to tourism in Indonesia exceeded 40 percent, compared to the gains obtained from ordinary travelers. This market also continued to record a growth of up to 20 percent each year. “Unfortunately this is still unbalanced as it is only held in Jakarta and Bali. So, we encourage the 14 other destinations to become MICE destination as well,” he hoped. He added that Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy would strive to encourage the regions in order to have MICE facilities and promote it to become wellknown. Continued on page 6
