The opening of BAF XXXV parade ﬂushed by rain Bali Post DENPASAR - Opening of the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) XXXV was commenced by the art parade participated by several regions across Bali and Indonesia in front of the Bajra Sandi Monument, Renon, Saturday (Jun 15).

It took place festively though having been ﬂushed by rain. The parade featuring approximately 15 colossal performances from numerous regions was officially opened by the President of the RI, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, marked with the beating of Gong Beri. Staging of the art parade was started by Adhi Merdangga marching band attrac-

tion and Shiva Nataraja dance performed by the students of the SMKN 5 Denpasar vocational school. It was a dance depicting the divine rays of Lord Shiva. Then, it was resumed with the presentation of cultural performance of Papua Province featuring special dance accompanied with red and white ﬂag signifying the vivacity to struggle for togetherness in developing the nation.

Afterward, the parade was continued with the art presentation by some counties such as Karangasem, Jembrana, Buleleng, Gianyar, Denpasar, Sumenep, Bangli, Klungkung, West Lampung, Badung, Tabanan as well as Timor Leste. On the second day, Saturday (Jun 15), the implementation of the World Hindu Summit (WHS) was ﬁlled with the meeting of the World Hindu Parishad in the Ksiraarnawa Building, Denpasar Art Center. The activity presenting numerous world Hindu leaders as the speakers discussed about various problems faced by the Hindus around the world today and found out brilliant solutions to get out of the problems. A Hindu figure from India, Kulwant Singh, appearing as a speaker at the first session raised the topic entitled ‘Invisible (Vedic) Defense Technology to End War, Violence and Terrorism.’ Aside from the man-made defense technology, he also pointed out the importance of the capability for the Hindus to ward off the desire of the enemy to attack us. “Vedas provides various techniques that can be applied for the interests,” he said. The second speaker was Sister Meera Megananda ex-

plaining about spirituality that should go hand in hand. She emphasized the important pillars of Hinduism consisting of the ahimsa (non-violence), love, peace and truth. They could be felt through the practice of spirituality. “There should be a bridge between religion and spirituality,” she afﬁrmed. Meanwhile, the third speaker, Sanjeev Sawhney (Hindu Bank), reminded that Hindus did not have a global ﬁnancial system. In the future, he said, it should be developed an infrastructure

such as the Hindu Bank. By all means, the presence of such ﬁnancial institution would give higher endurance to devotees. Further, the speaker Martin Gurvich put more emphasis regarding his experiences in uniting the Hindus in Europe. Dr. Pingale Charudatta Prabhakar from India appearing as speaker at the next session revealed that Hindus had many advantages in scientiﬁc knowledge. He emphasized that the Hindu knowledge remained highly relevant to the context

on these days such as in the field of health and sociology. Today, such knowledge had been scientifically proved. Meanwhile, the speaker Sri Muktanand Puri stressed the importance of following the spiritual preceptors to adapt the practices they had implemented. When met amidst the event, Chairman of the Working Committee of the World Hindu Summit 2013, Prof. Dr. I Made Bakta, said that some other world Hindu leaders appeared as speakers in the WHP Meeting last Friday. Gunaksa Harbour project needs revision Semarapura (Bali Post)-

It is very important and strategic in the development of Hindu ahead, either in Bali or the world,” he said. This Rector of the Udayana University added the organization was very important to establish a relationship with external parties around the world. He emphasized the WHP establishment was also believed to be able to increase the bargaining position of the Hindus in the world, including in Indonesia, and to speak about the issues on humanity, environment, education, religiosity and spirituality, both in the national and world level. Smuggling marijuana and methadone, French captured by Ccustoms Denpasar (Bali Post)-

Customs workers of Ngurah Rai Airport again captured an overseas from France named David Alexander Guigues (30) who smuggled marijuana and methadone last Wednesday (12/6). As stated on Friday (14/6), David came to Denpasar from Kuala Lumpur using Air Asia QZ8396 and got a body stripping check as there seemed to be suspicious items inside his body. A 0.79 gram marijuana was found on the buttocks and methadone inside the luggage he brought although the methadone has medical certificate with it. David was then brought to intensive investigation as Head of Customs, Made Wijaya, confirmed. In the other hand, Denpasar Police Illegal Drugs also captured a number of illegal drugs misuse. They are a BPD Bank (Regional Development Bank) worker, IB Wijaya (51) who brought methamphetamine 5.69 grams last Monday (10/6). Not only that police also caught two others, I Ketut Darmu (38) who lives at Jimbaran captured at Taman Jati No. 9, Mumbul which police confiscated aluminum foils and small plastics with methamphetamine 0.53 grams. And Wayan Sumbang (46) who got caught at Perum Beranda Bukit Project, Goa Gong Street, South Kuta, last Tuesday around 12.30 pm. From his hands 1 clipped plastic had 2 aluminum foils containing 0.13 net gram methamphetamine, one glass pipe has 1.33 gross 0.04 net grams, 1 bong and matches. Five artistic events performed in 1st day Antara

DENPASAR - Bali Arts Festival (PKB) 2013 or the 35th of its kind was featuring five artistic events on the first day, organizing committee has said. The five artistic events were performed on Sunday from 11.00am local time until night at five locations, Wayan Dauh, one of the PBK organizing committee members said here on Sunday. The Bali Arts Festival which was opened by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Saturday (June 15), was also participated in by four other representatives namely Sumenep (East Java), Lampung Barat (Lampung province), Papua province and neighboring country Timor Leste. Eight districts and one city in Bali also showed their best in the PKB, Wayan said, adding that the arts event will take place until July 13. The PKB opening ceremony was among other things attended by Education and Cultural Minister Muhammad Nuh and Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Mari Elka Pangestu.

A visit to Yunnan Province

Preserving culture through restoration VISITING Yunnan seems incomplete without a trip to Jian Shui Town. The small town located about 3-4 hours drive from Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province, is famous for its numerous historic old buildings and special culture. China’s government is serious in preserving the uniqueness of Jian Shui by spending tens of millions of yuans to restore the old buildings in order to make their culture remains sustainable. ONE of the most famous old buildings in Jian Shui is the Confucian Temple denoting a building with an area of 76,000 square meters. Built in 1285, the shrine becomes a sanctum to immortalize the teachings of the Chinese philosopher, Confucius. It has been restored for 50 times. China’s government spent a huge cost to restore the historic buildings to make them look beautiful and comfortable. In the Temple of Confucius, for example, the front courtyard is beautified with a convenient garden for citizens to gather. Generally, people coming to this temple are the elderly. They gather to play the typical Mahjong Chinese card, or just walk around while enjoying fresh air at the location. Sometimes they also have a seat or play a musical instrument. On entering the second area of this sanctum, visitors will find some teachings of Confucius written on many boards installed around the temple. In the entrance area, there will be a direction signage pointing visitors to various places within the temple. There are class room, room of martial art exercise, space to adore the ancestors and praying room. Besides, there are also other rooms featuring distinctive architecture of Yunnan. The teachings of Confucius related to the balance of life are highly upheld in China. Chinese community strongly believes in the teachings of universal nature, regardless of the religion they practice. Many people visit this temple to learn about the teachings of Confucius closer and pray for good luck and prosperity. Another equally historic building and becoming the pride of Jian Shui is the Zhu Family House. The house has an area of 6,667 square meters with 214 rooms. Establishment of the house was made by Zhu Family and took him about 30 years to accomplish. Such very majestic home was built very carefully and shows the character of Zhu big family. People say that Zhu big family is the prominent figure and wealthy merchant. Existence of the family house shows off the greatness and ruins of Zhu family. When Zhu family underwent devastation around 1911, the family house was then abandoned. After China’s government decided to open the economy and the country to the outside around the end of the 1990s, a large-scale restoration was made. Tens of millions of yuans were allocated by the government to restore the house of Zhu Family. As a result, the house standing rigidly and majestically could be restored and became the main attraction to tourists visiting Yunnan. Tourists are willing to travel about 4 hours from Kunming just to enjoy the beauty and learn about the architecture of the old buildings aging approximately 100 years. They can also stay in the house because it has been transformed into a hotel. However, not all rooms in the house are open for rent. Only 28 rooms are rented for curious tourists that would like to have an overnight in the typical old Chinese house. Another old building in Jian Shui is the Chaoyang Tower (tower facing the sun). The tower is a special hallmark of the Jian Shui old town. Established on the eastern side of the old city gates during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), its condition remains solid to date. Chaoyang Tower is also known as The Small Tiananmen because of its architectural design resembles to the Tiananmen Tower located in Beijing. From the top of this building, visitors can see the bustling activities of the old town. In the garden, the gathering elderly are absorbed in chatting. They are not bothered by the heat of the sun in the garden because the garden of Chaoyang Tower has been provided with several benches shaded by lush trees. (iah)

Uncertainty of fuel price hike triggers price speculation Denpasar (Bali Post)— Uncertainty about the fuel price hike scheduled to be made in the middle of this June would have an impact on a number of commodity prices in the market. It was revealed by an economist from the Udayana University, Dr. Murjana Yasa, Saturday (Jun 15). Further, he said the prices in the market would respond to the increase in the price for several times before the fuel price hike and would go up again when the fuel price truly increased. “Uncertain pattern is probably intended for learning or familiarizing the community in relation to the price increase as well as responding to the public perception as mature consideration for decision making,” he said. He added the impact of fuel price hike would be more felt by the low-income communities such as ﬁshermen, farmers and other poor communities, including the fixed-income group whose salary did not go up when the fuel price increased. Solutions that should be given by the government was providing the assistance as compensation for the fuel price hike to poor communities and should be accompanied with socialization regarding the interpretation to the temporary compensation to replace the rising expenditure burden of poor people

as the impact of fuel price hike and it was not charity having an impact on the other communities. “Its distribution should also be well managed to reach the right target. More importantly, the fuel distribution and commodity distribution must be monitored properly to prevent any speculation and fraudulence made by the other parties,” he explained. Meanwhile, at separate location the Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Mahasaraswati University, Wayan Sujana, said the increase of subsidized fuel price in June 2013 would also be believed to have an impact on a variety of business sectors, such as woodcraft centers. To that end, the government was expected to help the artisans by providing the assistance as compensation in the form of productive credit. The competition of woodcrafts sector in Bali against foreign producers was very strict. Consequently, if the price of Bali handicraft products were sold more expensively, they would not be able to draw buyers. Without

buyers, the woodcraft producers in Bali would indirectly stop and their business would go bankrupt. “To overcome the cumulative effects of the rising fuel price, the role of the government is highly required,” he said. He said if the government gave compensation to the poor in the form of temporary direct assistance (BLSM), it should also be made equal to the artisans. However, the assistance was different where it was in the form of productive credit with low interest rates or granting of special interest. According to him, the government should also provide the other forms of compensation to the artisans. It could include the development of a wider market access. On that account, the crafters were hoped to get easier market when the price of fuel was soaring. “Aside from expecting the compensation from the government, the artisans should be optimistic through the development of innovative products in response to the impact of the subsidized fuel price hike,” he advised. With the innovative handicraft products, the buyers were expected to fall in love with the quality of Balinese wooden crafts that had been famous overseas. (kmb28)

Latin American countries target for tourism market Antara

NUSA DUA - Countries in Latin America are potential to be Indonesia’s next target market for tourism, spokesman to Bali’s Tourist guide Association (HPI) Amos Lillo has said. “The key is the government’s willingness to engage with Latin American countries to promote our tourism potential. In order to boost more tourist visit to Indonesia, it is important for the government to diversify target market such as to Latin American countries,” he said here on Thursday on the sideline of the 6th Foreign Ministers Meeting of Forum for East Asia and Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC) that runs on June 13 to 14. Amos called on the establishment of commitment among governments from east Asia and Latin American countries to boost cooperation in tourism sector. “Strong government to government relations will ease off business people in executing the cooperation agreed,” he added.

Earlier FEALAC Vision Group members during the meeting last June 4-6 in Bali also discussed the importance of cooperation in tourism sector saying that it is an important tool to boost people to people relations. On its final report, the group recommended that government and tourism agencies should increase efforts to engage their counterparts, and as a way to increase tourist visits across the two regions. “FEALAC member countries should explore ways and means to facilitate travels in order to encourage more people to people contacts, especially with reference to culture and youth-related tourism when visited by tourists from other region,” the recommendation said.

MEXICO CITY - A strong 6.5-magnitude earthquake was registered off the Pacific coast of Nicaragua around midday Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries after the quake, which was felt at 11:34 a.m. local time (1734 GMT). The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered about 50 kilometers (31 miles) west of the Masachapa, a community located on Nicaragua’s Pacific coast. Nicaragua’s seismological institute measured the temblor’s strength as 6.6, and it declared a tsunami alert as a precaution because of the earthquake’s strength.

TEHRAN, Iran - Wild celebrations broke out on Tehran streets that were battlefields four years ago as reformist-backed Hasan Rowhani capped a stunning surge to claim Iran’s presidency on Saturday, throwing open the political order after relentless crackdowns by hard-liners to consolidate and safeguard their grip on power. “Long live Rowhani,” tens of thousands of jubilant supporters chanted as security officials made no attempt to rein in crowds - joyous and even a bit bewildered by the scope of his victory with more than three times the votes of his nearest rival. In his first statement after the results were announced, Rowhani said that “a new opportunity has been created ... for those who truly respect democracy, interaction and free dialogue.” But in Iran, even landslides at the ballot box do not equate to policymaking influence. All key decisions - including nuclear efforts, defense and foreign affairs - remain solidly in the hands of the ruling clerics and their powerful protectors, the Revolutionary Guard. What Rowhani’s victory does is reopen space for moderate and liberal voices that have been largely muzzled in reprisal for massive protests and clashes in 2009 over claims the vote was rigged to deny reformists the presidency. Rowhani’s supporters also viewed the election as a rebuke of uncompromising policies that have left the Islamic Republic increasingly isolated and under biting sanctions from the West over Tehran’s nuclear program. The 64-year-old Rowhani is hardly a radical - having served in governments and in the highly sensitive role of nuclear negotiator - but he has taken

a strong stance against the combative international policies of outgoing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and others. “I’ve never been an extremist,” Rowhani said on state TV shortly after the official results were announced. “I support moderation.” “I thank God that once again rationality and moderation has shined on Iran,” he continued. “This is the victory of wisdom, a victory of moderation and a victory of commitment over extremism.” His emphasis on outreach could sharply lower the political temperature between Iran and the West - including Israel - and perhaps nudge the ruling establishment toward more flexible approaches in possible renewed nuclear talks with the U.S. and world powers. Rowhani also has added leverage with his political godfather and ally, former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, who was blocked from the ballot but now can exert significant influence from the wings. Alireza Nader, a senior policy analyst at the Rand Corp. who follows Iranian affairs, described Rowhani as a de facto hero for reformists who couldn’t support any of the other five candidates on the ballot. “It remains to be seen how much room will be given to Rowhani by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the Revolutionary Guard,” he cautioned.

But clearly for Iran’s leadership, the resounding strength of Rowhani’s victory underscores the resilience and reach of the opposition that coalesced four years ago around the nowcrushed Green Movement. In the divided country, it also may provide a bit of buffer. Selfish players cause big trouble, says Mourinho Reuters LONDON - Jose Mourinho has told his players not to act selfishly in his second spell as manager of Chelsea otherwise there will be “big trouble” at Stamford Bridge. Divisions emerged in the dressing room during the last few months of Mourinho’s reign at his previous club Real Madrid and he seems determined to avoid a repeat. “If you are a top professional, if you are not a selfish person, if you put the club in front of yourself and if you are here to work 100 percent for me, for your fellow players and for the club, we will have a wonderful relationship,” he told reporters. “If you are selfish, if you don’t care about the club, don’t care about the fans, don’t care about the image... we are in big trouble. “Sometimes you have groups that adapt to this in a very easy way. Sometimes you have groups that this becomes like a doctrine and everything is easy,” said Mourinho. “Sometimes you have a couple of guys who are not so keen to accept these kind of rules and this is where you have

some problematic relationships.” Mourinho is one of eight Chelsea managers to have been appointed since Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003. The Portuguese’s close friend Alex Ferguson, who retired last month following a remarkable 26-year spell as Manchester United boss, once said that a regular turnover of managers gave more power to the players. “What Sir Alex says in relation to English football is doctrine, it’s the bible,” said Mourinho. “If he says that with so many years of experience then I think he is correct. Does it relate to this club? Jakarta to hold traditional art festival Antara

JAKARTA - Jakarta provincial government will conduct a traditional arts festival 2013 or “Enjoy Jakarta International Folklore Festival (EJIFF)” on June 26 through 28, a tourism official has said. Six foreign countries are expected to participated in the first-ever EJIFF, said head of the city’s tourism and cultural affairs office, Arie Budhiman here on Sunday. The participating countries are Egypt, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Jakarta as the host, he pointed out. “EJIFF is one of the promotion and preservation programs of traditional arts which is aimed to commemorate the Jakarta’s 486th anniversary,” Arie said. “We wish to make Jakarta as a modern international tourism destination through this event, because Jakarta as a melting pot of the national arts and cultures as well as a benchmark of the

Chinese hackers conduct most attacks in Indonesia cyber Antara

SURABAYA - Information and Communication Minister Tifatul Sembiring said that the Chinese hackers have conducted the most attacks on Indonesia’s cyber world. “The most attacks come from Chinese hackers, followed by European, US, Singaporean, Malaysian and others,” he said in his speech at the “Indonesia Security Conference (IdSecCons) 2013” at state Airlangga University here on Saturday. Flanked by the rector of the university, Prof H Fasich Apt., the minister meanwhile said that his ofﬁce’s website had been attacked by hackers up to 39.9 million times in 2012 while a hacker from Jember, East Java, Wildan, who had hacked President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s website, hacked 5,320 times a year. “These hackers however are useful because they have also shown weakness in our system while they have also never stolen any data. They are different from crackers who hacked to steal data and sell them,” he said. On the occasion the minister called on the 6th IdSecCons participants to demonstrate their capabilities in the cyber world positively and selectively because the cyber world also has the potential to create disintegration if its contents sharpen differences and information it spread is negative. “Nearly 64 percent of cyber players

TIMIKA - Four senior employees of a US mining company accused by unions of being at fault over a deadly Indonesian mine accident have been suspended after workers threatened to strike, the ﬁrm said Friday. Unions at Freeport-McMoRan’s Grasberg, a huge gold and copper mine in eastern Papua province, called off a strike that had been due to begin Friday after the employees -- who included three foreigners -- were suspended. They had demanded the move, accusing the staff members of being at fault over the May 14 tunnel collapse at Grasberg which left 28 people dead. A strike would have been another blow to the troubled operation after production was suspended pending the outcome of a probe into the accident. A previous strike in 2011 lasted three months and crippled production. Daisy Primayanti, a spokeswoman for Freeport’s Indonesian subsidiary, conﬁrmed the suspensions. “These suspensions are part of our ongoing investigation process,” she told AFP, adding the decision was taken after discussions with unions. “This is for the interest of all workers

and our organisation.” She said those suspended were the heads of geo-technical services, safety and occupational health, quality management services and underground operations. PARIS - Tax evasion and banking secrecy, hot topics and top targets because of the ﬁnancial crises and austerity, could be the focus of strong statements at the G8 meeting this week. The British government, organising the meeting in Northern Ireland, has promised big developments on the basis of substantial progress recently in clamping down on evasion and bursting bank secrecy. But many observers from civic bodies are pessimistic and say that the summit on Monday and Tuesday will amount to a lost opportunity despite the public outrage over recent brazen cases at a time of tax rises and budget cuts. The tightening up of tax systems across borders, and opening up information on how businesses do their accounting across borders, are two of the burning issues for Britain which is currently chairing the G8 (Group of Eight) leading countries. The G8 comprises the United States, Japan, Germany, France, Canada, Britain, Italy and Russia. British Prime Minister David Cameron has prepared the way for the summit of heads and state and govern-

ment by stating the “ambition” that the meeting at Lough Erne will “knock down the walls of banking secrecy” with “concrete measures”. French President Francois Hollande, badly bruised by a recent scandal involving an admission by his budget minister Jerome Cahuzac, also responsible for fighting tax evasion, that he had hidden money abroad, has said: “Tax havens must be eradicated in Europe and throughout the world.” The climate has turned strongly in favour of tough action: pressure on these two fronts, which seemed to have eased after progress in 2009, is again at a high pitch. First, a new law in the United States, called Fatca, obliges all banks to provide US authorities with all information they hold concerning all assets owned by US taxpayers. Meanwhile, revelations by journalists, known as “Offshore Leaks”, have further strengthened the perception that no bank account can be considered secret and that

hidden funds are liable to exposure. The consequence of this is that the gates of some strongholds of banking secrecy, such as Switzerland, are beginning to give way. The European Union, in which some countries have arrangements considered favourable to those seeking to dissimulate funds, seems to be overcoming internal divisions and trying to catch up with the United States, even though Austria and Luxembourg still show some reticence. The G8 leaders are expected to make strong statements calling for a “truly global system of multinational information exchange”, according to a draft ﬁnal statement. But concrete measures appear unlikely. Cameron has opened a second front to combat strategies by multinational companies to avoid paying tax via transfer pricing and other techniques to generate costs in hightax countries and profits in low-tax countries or tax havens.

ROME - Italy’s cabinet on Saturday approved emergency measures aimed at boosting growth and relieving pressure on struggling Italians, from reducing bills and red tape to increasing credit for businesses. “There are many measures in the ‘To Do’ law,” said Prime Minister Enrico Letta at a press conference, referring to the name given to the new decree which is expected to create 30,000 new jobs in infrastructure alone. “Many of them give Italians the possibility to carry out operations necessary to relaunch the country’s economy,” such as investing in machinery or taking on new workers in a move aimed at tackling high unemployment as well, he said. The eurozone’s third largest economy did worse than previously thought in the first quarter of this year, shrinking by 0.6 percent instead of the 0.5 percent estimated earlier, and the unemployment rate in April rose to 12 percent. Italy’s youth jobless rate has spiralled and now stands at 40.5 percent. Letta was quick to stress the new coalition government’s unity in approving the measures -- despite tensions in recent days over some of the more contentious proposals. The decree allocates three billion euros ($4 billion) for public works projects this year, of which some 600 million euros will be invested in the national rail network. Among measures aimed at easing the pressure of austerity programmes imposed in 2011 to ward off the eurozone debt crisis, energy bills will be reduced by 550 million euros -- in part by cutting tax. In an effort to protect homeowners, those who owe less than 120 thousand euros will not have their homes repossessed -- unless they own more than one. “To better relations between citizens and the state”, the loathed national tax agency Equitalia will fight evasion “without a punitive attitude”, becoming “a tax friend, particularly to those in difficulty,” Interior Minister Angelo Alfano said. Some 100 million euros have been earmarked for the upkeep of the country’s school buildings, many of which are in dire need of repairs, in “an important signal to reassure families,” Education Minister Chiara Carrozza said. The decree law also includes measures to reduce red tape, in particular by making it easier for immigrants to obtain Italian citizenship. Parliament now has 60 days to convert the decree into law, though the measures enter into force immediately. Letta said the government would introduce further measures to ease hiring rules and fight youth joblessness next week.

Police raid on Istanbul park triggers night of rioting Reuters ISTANBUL - Thousands of people took to the streets of Istanbul overnight on Sunday, erecting barricades and starting bonfires, after riot police firing teargas and water cannon stormed a park at the center of two weeks of anti-government unrest. Lines of police backed by armored vehicles sealed off Taksim Square in the center of the city as officers raided the adjoining Gezi Park late on Saturday, where protesters had been camped in a ramshackle settlement of tents. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan had warned hours earlier that security forces would clear the square, the center of more than two weeks of fierce anti-government protests that spread to cities across the country, unless the demonstrators withdrew before a ruling party rally in Istanbul on Sunday.

“We have our Istanbul rally tomorrow. I say it clearly: Taksim Square must be evacuated, otherwise this country’s security forces know how to evacuate it,” he told tens of thousands of ﬂag-waving supporters at a rally in Ankara. Protesters took to the streets in several neighborhoods across Istanbul following the raid on Gezi Park, ripping up metal fences, paving stones and advertising hoardings to build barricades and lighting bonﬁres of trash in the streets. Some chanted, “Tayyip, resign.” Local television footage showed

groups of demonstrators blocking a main highway to Ataturk airport on the western edge of the city, while to the east, several hundred walked towards a main bridge crossing the Bosphorus waterway towards Taksim. Thousands more rallied in the working-class Gazi neighborhood, which saw heavy clashes with police in the 1990s, while protesters also gathered in Ankara around the central Kugulu Park, including opposition MPs who sat in the streets in an effort to prevent the police from ﬁring teargas. PYONGYANG, North Korea North Korea’s top governing body on Sunday proposed high-level nuclear and security talks with the United States in an appeal sent just days after calling off talks with rival South Korea. The powerful National Defense Commission headed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un issued a statement through state media proposing “seniorlevel” talks to ease tensions and discuss a peace treaty formally ending the Korean War. There was no immediate response from Washington, but President Barack Obama’s envoy on North Korea said Friday that while the U.S. is not averse to talking with Pyongyang, the bar for resuming engagement is higher in the wake of repeated nuclear threats and provocations. Foreign analysts expressed skepticism, saying impoverished North Korea often calls for talks after raising tensions with provocative behavior in order to win outside concessions.

The rare proposal for talks between the Korean War foes follows months of acrimony over North Korea’s deﬁant launch of a longrange rocket in December and a nuclear test in February, provocative acts that drew tightened U.N. and U.S. sanctions. The U.S. and South Korea countered the moves by stepping up annual springtime military exercises that prompted North Korea to warn of a “nuclear war” on the Korean Peninsula. However, as tensions subsided in May and June, Pyongyang has made tentative overtures to re-establish dialogue with South Korea and Washington. In a notable shift in propaganda in Pyongyang, posters and billboards calling on North Koreans to “wipe away the American imperialist aggressors” have been taken down in recent weeks. Meanwhile, a recent proposal from Pyongyang for Cabinet-level talks with South Korea - the ﬁrst in six years - led to plans for two days of meetings in Seoul earlier this week. MEXICO CITY — This mayoral hopeful in Mexico promises to eat, sleep most of the day and donate his leftover litter to ﬁll potholes. Morris, a black-and-white kitten with orange eyes, is running for mayor of Xalapa in eastern Mexico with the campaign slogan “Tired of Voting for Rats? Vote for a Cat.” And he is attracting tens of thousands of politicianweary, two-legged supporters on social media. “He sleeps almost all day and does nothing, and that fits the profile of a politician,” said 35year-old office worker Sergio Chamorro, who adopted the 10month-old feline last year. Put forth as a candidate by Chamorro and a group of friends after they became disillusioned with the empty promises of politicians, Morris’ candidacy has resonated across Mexico, where citizens frustrated with human candidates are nominating their pets and farm animals to run in July 7 elections being held in 14 states. LONDON — Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her birthday Saturday with traditional pomp and circumstance, followed by a visit to her husband in the hospital. More than 1,000 soldiers, horses and musicians took part in the parade known as “Trooping the Color,” an annual ceremony marking the queen’s official birthday. With Prince Philip unable to attend the celebration as he is recovering from abdominal surgery, the queen invited her cousin, the Duke of Kent, to accompany her in a vintage carriage. The monarch’s actual birthday was on April 21, when she turned 87. The “Trooping the Color” ceremony originates from traditional battle preparations, when “colors,” which refer to military flags, were carried down the rank to be seen by soldiers. Other royals — including Prince Harry, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge — also were on hand to celebrate on Saturday. After the parade, the queen visited Philip at a private London hospital.

The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long ﬂags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

MANCHESTER, Tennessee — Even a former Beatle needs a moment standing on the main stage at Bonnaroo. A few songs into his transcendent ﬁrst set at the massive Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Paul McCartney wrapped his arms around his signature Hofner bass and surveyed a crowd of 80,000 adoring fans. “Hey, listen, I’m going to take a moment just to drink all this in for myself,” McCartney said. McCartney is one of the world’s most recognizable musicians and showed why as he led a massive 2½-hour sing-a-long of three dozen songs that included two encores Friday night. Playing for a crowd consisting mostly of fans who were born a decade or more after the Beatles broke up in 1971, he lavishly revisited the Beatles, Wings and his own solo catalog, laying down hit after hit and playing two Beatles cuts he only recently began playing live for the ﬁrst time — “Lovely Rita” and “Mr. Mustard.” McCartney, who turns 71 next week, acknowledged some cultural similarities between the generations, however.

“That’s some pretty good weed I can smell,” McCartney said as wispy puffs of smoke rose from hundreds of spots in the crowd. “What are you doing to me?” McCartney took the time to talk about several songs, explaining his Beatles classic “Blackbird” was written about the civil rights struggle in Arkansas. He noted songs he wrote for his wives over the years, took a moment to express support for incarcerated Russian punk rock band Pussy Riot after playing “Back in the USSR” and told a humorous story about Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. McCartney warned members of the crowd to never hold back their feelings, as he did with Lennon after the group broke up. “That’s it,” McCartney said after finishing the song on a baby grand piano. “If you wait to tell someone you love them, it’s too late.” The set only seemed to pick up speed as the night edged toward midnight. With the crowd yet to diminish, he played “Live and Let Die” accented by onstage pyrotechnics and fireworks. The entire crowd joined in on “Hey, Jude” before McCartney and his fourpiece band left the stage. He returned waving a Tennessee state flag and played a three-song encore that included “Day Tripper” and “Get Back.” He returned for a second encore that included a rollicking version of “Helter Skelter.” A member of the crowd tossed McCartney a stuffed toy walrus, alluding to a cryptic nickname given to him by Lennon, and McCartney concluded his first show at Bonnaroo by singing “Carry That Weight” to the toy he placed atop his piano.

Former Elmo puppeteer wins 3 Daytime Emmy awards Associated Press Writer LOS ANGELES — Kevin Clash, the Elmo puppeteer who resigned amid allegations that he sexually abused underage boys, won three Daytime Emmy Awards for his work on “Sesame Street.” Clash won as outstanding performer in a children’s series at the creative arts ceremony held Friday night. He shared trophies for outstanding pre-school children’s series and directing in a children’s series, giving Clash 26 Daytime Emmys for his work on the venerable Public Broadcasting Service show. He played Elmo for 28 years before quitting last November. Clash’s lawyer has said that related lawsuits ﬁled against the entertainer are without merit. The main Daytime Emmys ceremony is Sunday in Beverly Hills.
