Hollywood’s Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner file for divorce LOS ANGELES - Actors Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner officially filed for divorce nearly two years after the Hollywood A-list couple split, the Los Angeles Times reported. Irreconcilable differences were cited in the paperwork filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, where Garner filed the divorce petition and Affleck filed his response, the newspaper reported late on Thursday. Garner and Affleck, both 44, are seeking joint custody of their three children: daughters Violet, 11, and Seraphina, 9. Affleck and Garner co-starred in the 2003 superhero film “Daredevil” and were married in 2005. They announced plans to divorce a day after their 10th wedding anniversary in 2015. (rtr)

Next Star Wars movie to feature new female character

The popular 40-year-old Star ORLANDO - The largely testosterone-fueled Star Wars movie franchise has added an important new female character Wars franchise in recent times has in the eighth film, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”, director Rian been criticized for a lack of recognizably female characters. Ridley was brought into the franchise in the seventh movie, “The Force Awakens”, as a lead character. Fans have been expecting Lucasfilm to add more females to the cast. The movie poster shows Rey on an intense red background pointing her light saber skyward, the beam dividing images of Skywalker and Kylo Ren. The poster harkens back to the poster for the first Star Wars film in 1977 in which Skywalker similarly pointed the beam up. The movie stars were on hand during the 2017 Star Wars Celebration at the Orange County Convention Center.

Fisher was beloved for her role as Princess Leia, a character who was part of the original cast. Fisher died in December, but filmed scenes in The Last Jedi before her death. The movie franchise is popular equally with male and female fans. Disney bought the franchise from creator George Lucas in 2012 for $4 billion. Three years later, the company announced plans for new 14-acre Star Wars “lands” at both its Orlando and Anaheim, California, parks, capitalizing on the lucrative brand much as Universal Studios did at its Orlando parks with the Harry Potter phenomenon. The Star Wars attraction will dwarf Disney’s other themed lands and feature two new rides, including one in which guests can captain the Millennium Falcon spaceship. (rtr)

‘Unprecedented’ migrant situation in the Mediterranean

A charity that rescues migrants has described the situation this weekend as “unprecedented” after going to the aid of people aboard nine boats in the Mediterranean Sea. The Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) said the seven rubber and two wooden vessels contained an estimated 1,500-1,800 men, women and children.

It took 453 people on board its own ship, the Phoenix, while MOAS crew members supervised more than 1,000 others on “unseaworthy” vessels into the night, providing basic provisions and life jackets. MOAS said the situation became more “delicate” as weather conditions deteriorated after dark. In the central Mediterranean, it said there had been 2,074 rescues conducted by “various search-and-rescue (SAR) assets on Friday, including 134 rescued by the Phoenix”. That meant the Easter weekend was “set to be the latest marker in the record-breaking escalation of this on-going humanitarian crisis at sea”. MOAS said it had been “a 24 hours marathon of continuous rescue operations”. The charity’s founder, Christopher Catrambone, said: “Nobody has ever seen anything like what we are witnessing this weekend. “It is a miracle that we have

managed to rescue everyone with no casualties today. “We are still conducting operations with a new boat contact spotted early this morning. “The professional conduct and tireless efforts of our crew are to thank for the many lives saved today.” MOAS co-founder and director Regina Catrambone called on European governments “to act so that people, such as those rescued by us today, do not die”. German NGO Jugend Rettet said 3,000 migrants had been rescued by the Italian coastguard and other boats off the Libyan coast on Saturday. The organisation said good weather had helped to increase the numbers. AMO at Puputan Square first created

DENPASAR - In Denpasar there are seven automatic drinking water machines (AMOs). They are at Puputan Badung Square (2 units), Renon Square (1 unit), Sanur (1 unit), Lumintang Square (2 units) and in Sewaka area (1 unit). On average, the AMO has been five years old. “The AMO at Puputan is the first made,” said Director of municipal waterworks (PDAM) Denpasar, I.B. Arsana. On that account, for the time being, all the AMO machines are closed. “Public service is temporary closed. We totally close all the AMO machines to anticipate the trauma of society,” he added. AMO maintenance has been performed continuously. There is hygiene maintenance and replacement. Hygiene check is done every two weeks according to SOP and depends on the situation. Likewise the change of filter is recognized to have been done continuously. AMO indeed uses electricity to filter water, kill germs and clean the water itself. “It needs electricity of 220 volts or 450 watts,” he said. It utilizes household electricity, just intended for the AMO operation. If indeed Rendi died from electrocution, the device will be changed and the distributor will be summoned. DENPASAR - The disaster afflicting to Rendi Rizaldi who died while drinking water in the automatic drinking water machine (AMO) at the Puputan Badung (Gusti Ngurah Made Agung) Square, is still in the process of investigation. Moreover, the AMO machine owned by the municipality waterworks (PDAM) of Denpasar is still demarcated with police line. Therefore, the PDAM has not been able to check the source of the occurrence of electrical leakage in the machine.

Technical Director of PDAM Denpasar, I Putu Yasa, when confirmed on Friday (Apr. 14) said the AMO machine uses electric current in one of the components, namely the UV. “The electrical current is used to activate the UV,” he explained. However, he could not ensure where the location of the electrical leakage on the AMO machine at the Puputan Badung Square considering that until Saturday it was still demarcated with police line. “We have not been able to conduct the examination because it is still handled by police authority,” he said. Meanwhile, President Director of the PDAM Denpasar, I.B. Gede Arsana, said that currently the company has built the AMO machine at seven locations. Other than at the PDAM office, the AMO machine is also placed at Puputan Margarana Square, Renon (one unit), Puputan Badung Square (2 units), Lumintang City Park (1 unit), Jalan Subita (1 unit) and another

unit on Segara Ayu Beach, Sanur. Installation of the AMO machine is the follow-up of the government regulation (PP) No.16/2005 that requires PDAM companies all over Indonesia to prepare drinking water. PDAM Denpasar has realized the development of drinking water started from 2007 in the form of automatic drinking water machine (AMO) placed at the office of PDAM Denpasar and then in 2008 was built the drinking water machine on Jalan Subita and another unit on Segara Ayu Beach, Sanur, in 2009. In a series of the 18th anniversary of the Denpasar municipality, PDAM Denpasar built an AMO machine at Puputan Badung Square, Denpasar, with the aim to provide convenience in order to get ready drinking water for people who use the square either for morning or afternoon sport activities. AMO development has been inaugurated by the mayor of Denpasar accompanied by director of PDAM Denpasar with the head of related agencies on Thursday (Feb. 11, 2010). AMO development is a form of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of the PDAM Denpasar to the community, especially the people of Denpasar to introduce to the public that the AMO prepared by PDAM Denpasar can be drunk directly because the water has passed through the process stages whose quality has met the requirements set by the minister of health so that it is safe to be consumed directly by community. Related to the investment cost required for one unit of AMO machine, Arsana said it ranges from IDR 50 million to IDR 70 million. (kmb12)

TABANAN - It has become a tradition that on the feast of Kuningan or ten days after Galungan, Hindu devotees in Tabanan especially at Bongan village area, to carry out the mesuryak (cheering) tradition. The tradition carried out from generation to generation is aimed to deliver the ancestral spirits to be back to heaven. At Bongan hamlet itself, this activity takes place from 09:00 through 11:00. Commenced by saying prayers from the home of each resident, it is resumed to merajan (clan temple) and trinity temples. After this procession is over, the tradition of mesuryak begins. The whole big family says prayers at merajan to beg salvation to God as well as to the ancestors who have been at home since the day of Galungan until Kuningan. Mesuryak is then proceeded to bring all the ritual paraphernalia such as the offerings to the front entrance of each house compound. Furthermore, the priests or the elder figures chant prayers closed with the mesuryak. Each family will give provision in the form of

coins and banknotes. The money is thrown into the air and then greeted by other residents. Children and adults are fighting for each other to get the money. The atmosphere of mesuryak is getting more vibrant with the appearance of barong ngelawang (gallivanting show) participating in the mesuryak tradition. Chief of Bongan Gede customary village, I Nyoman Parwata, said that the mesuryak tradition is a hereditary tradition existing at his hamlet. “Mesuryak aims at delivering the ancestral spirits to go back to heaven because previously from Galungan day the ancestors are at the home. After ten days, precisely on Kuningan feast, we bring the ancestors back to heaven. With joy while cheering, we throw money into the air to be contested by many people,” he said. The amount of money used in the mesuryak varies depending on the economic capacity of the residents. This tradition inherited through generations remains to be held every six months coinciding with the Kuningan feast day. (kmb28)

SEOUL - Covering a North Korean military parade is an emotional rollercoaster. Foreign journalists stand just metres from the action in Pyongyang’s Kim Il Sung Square. It is a visual and sensory barrage. Your eyes are assaulted by the technicolour pallet of socialist-realist propaganda. The ground at your feet shakes as tanks rumble past, leaving a diesel aftertaste in your mouth. That heavy equipment, and the brigades of tightly coordinated goosestepping soldiers that come before them, are an impressive sight. But the thousands of North Koreans cheering and crying for hours for leader Kim Jong Un, who watches from a balcony 30 metres behind us, can also be overwhelming. You can see the tiredness in their faces. The parades offer weapons analysts and U.N. investigators a rare chance to gain new insight into secretive North Korea’s military capabilities. Every nut and bolt in every photo and video is closely scrutinised. North Korea likely knows this, and sometimes reveals new and untested equipment. It did so on Saturday, displaying what appeared to be two new kinds of intercontinental ballistic missile in its military arsenal. The second area of interest to North Korea watchers is the balcony where Kim and his aides stand. To whom is Kim talking, with whom does he shake hands first? Is his elusive sister, Kim Yo Jong, up there with him?

She often is, and was on Saturday, lurking somewhere behind a pillar or bright red flag, her mischievous smile a surreal antidote to the militaristic pomp and ceremony of the event below. On TV, these parades appear as a tightly choreographed and slick affair. But on the ground, it is the little details which slip through that facade that are most interesting. That perfectly synchronised goosestepping is aided by thousands of painted white dots placed a metre apart on the ground, guiding boots to the right spot. And behind Kim’s balcony is a large traffic light and countdown clock which gives each platoon the signal to begin marching. One of the most visually spectacular aspects of the parade is the large human screen behind the centre of the action. There, hundreds of thousands of North Koreans hold up coloured placards which, viewed from a distance, spell out huge propaganda slogans. But easily lost in that mass scale are the individual faces of those human pixels who, dressed in their finest clothes, stand holding plastic flowers in the sun for hours. Divided into work units, people prepare for months for such events, often having no choice but to forgo time at weekends and after work to practise. This is in addition to the economic double life most North Koreans lead, whereby meagre income from official jobs is supplemented on a thriving

network of semi-legal markets. As they walk past Kim Jong Un’s balcony, some people are overcome with emotion and cry. Others look gaunt and exhausted. When the parade is over, the square hums with activity as the different groups all go their separate ways. The pink petals from their plastic flowers leave a trail behind them. NEW MISSILES

North Korea displayed what appeared to be new long-range and submarine-based missiles on the 105th birth anniversary of its founding father, Kim Il Sung, on Saturday, as a nuclear-powered U.S. aircraft carrier group steamed towards the region. Missiles appeared to be the main theme of a giant military parade, with Kim’s grandson, leader Kim Jong Un, taking time to greet the commander of the Strategic Forces, the branch that oversees the missile arsenal. A U.S. Navy attack on a Syrian airfield this month with Tomahawk missiles raised questions about U.S. President Donald Trump’s plans for reclusive North Korea, which has conducted several missile and nuclear tests in defiance of U.N. sanctions, regularly threatening to destroy the United States. Kim Jong Un, looking relaxed in a dark suit and laughing with aides, oversaw the festivities on the “Day of the Sun” at Pyongyang’s main Kim Il Sung Square. Goose-stepping soldiers and marching bands filled the square,

next to the Taedonggang River that flows through Pyongyang, in the hazy spring sunshine, followed by tanks, multiple-launch rocket systems and other weapons. Single-engine propeller-powered planes flew in a 105 formation overhead. Unlike at some previous parades attended by Kim, there did not appear to be a senior Chinese official in attendance. China is North Korea’s lone major ally but has spoken out against its missile and nuclear tests and has supported U.N. sanctions. China on Friday again called for talks to defuse the crisis. Weapons analysts said they believed some of the missiles on display were new types of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM). The North has said it has developed and would launch a missile that can strike the mainland United States but officials and experts believe it is some time away from mastering all the necessary technology. “EARLY DAYS”

North Korea showed two new kinds of ICBM enclosed in canister launchers mounted on the back of trucks, suggesting Pyongyang was working towards a “new concept” of ICBM, said Melissa Hanham, a senior research associate at the U.S.-based Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, California. “However, North Korea has a habit of showing off new concepts in parades before they ever test or launch

them,” Hanham said. “It is still early days for these missile designs.” The Pukkuksong submarinelaunched ballistic missiles (SLBM) were also on parade. It was the first time North Korea had shown the missiles, which have a range of more than 1,000 km (600 miles), at a military parade. Displaying more than one of the missiles indicates North Korea is progressing with its plan to base a missile on a submarine, which are hard to detect, said Joshua Pollack, editor of the Washington-based Nonproliferation Review. “It suggests a commitment to this programme,” said Pollack. “Multiple SLBMs seems like a declaration of intent to advance the programme.” North Korea, still technically at war with the South after their 195053 conflict ended in a truce but not a treaty, has on occasion conducted missile or nuclear tests to coincide with big political events and often threatens the United States, South Korea and Japan. Choe Ryong Hae, a close aide to Kim Jong Un, addressed the packed square with a characteristically bellicose warning to the United States. “If the United States wages reckless provocation against us, our revolutionary power will instantly counter with annihilating strike, and we will respond to full-out war with full-out war and to nuclear war with our style of nuclear strike warfare,” he said. GIANYAR - Only a few textile businesses apply natural ingredients for their dyes. I Made Yasa Arsana with his brother-in-law, I Made Andika Putra, dares to try it. In 1998, Arsana worked in the textile company owned by a Japanese and reaped a lot of complaints from surrounding residents and municipal police. In that year, Arsana also tried to find out natural dyes from fruits, flowers, leaves, bark and roots of trees. Having tried all the ingredients, they finally chose leaf material for their textile dyes for the long term. “The use of leaf will not kill the tree,” said Andika Putra. If using bark or roots, it tends to hurt and kills the tree. “We decided to use leaves growing around the factory including the leaves of sea-almond, mahogany, mango, indigo and sappanwood,” said I Made Andika Putra, recently. New Zealander sentenced to 2.5 Years, Singaporean presents expert DENPASAR - The involvement of foreigners in drug cases in Bali continues to surface. The government, especially the law enforcers, in this case prosecuting the defendants, should give severe punishment to the perpetrators. Other than in Bali, many foreigners also become drug smugglers outside Bali. On Thursday (Apr. 13), the Denpasar district court tried two drug cases involving foreigners. To provide a deterrent effect in this case, it is the duty of the judges as the spearheading officers. In fact, sometimes there is little evidence, but the punishment is severe. On the other hand, there are a lot of evidences of drugs, the verdict is even light. All drug cases are determined by the judges in the hearing. On Thursday afternoon, the defendant Myra Lynne Williams, 28, from New Zealand, was proved to have abused crystal meth weighing 0.43 gram. By the panel of judges led by Made Purnami, she was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison. Myra Lynne Williams with the possession of 0.43 gram of crystal meth only is charged with 2.5 years. What about the defendant Muhammad Faliq Bin Nordin from Singapore? He was on trial over the possession of more than 122 grams of cocaine. It is very much different from the evidence owned by Myra. Therefore, Regent Suwirta asked the village authority to build TPST. He said that local government is ready to provide with necessary facilities. Even, if there is an area deemed suitable for the establishment of landfill, the local headman is asked to provide understanding for the community that if the TPST and landfill are well managed it will not adversely affect the surrounding environment. It will even be able to bring in economic benefits if the waste has been processed. Meanwhile, the limited coordination meeting concluded some decisions. Among them, local government will design the establishment of large-scale organic fertilizer processing by utilizing state land gradually. So, the buffer villages will no longer be served in the collection, and transportation of waste. However, they must be encouraged to manage their waste independently. To reduce piles of waste at landfill, all villages are expected to sort out organic and non-organic waste starting from households. World’s oldest person, last one of 19th century, dies in Italy at 117 ROME - Emma Morano, who at 117 was believed to be the world’s oldest person and the last surviving child of the 19th century, died on Saturday, swearing to the end on her diet of two raw eggs a day. “She reached an incredible finish line,” said Silvia Marchionini, mayor of the town of Verbania in northern Italy where Morano lived on the shores of Lake Maggiore. Morano, who lived 117 years and 137 days, was born on Nov. 29, 1899, four years before the Wright brothers first took to the air. Her life spanned three centuries, two World Wars and more than 90 Italian governments. “My life wasn’t so nice,” she told Reuters last November on her 117th birthday. “I worked in a factory until I was 65, then that was that,” she said as she sat in an armchair by her window, a white shawl over her shoulders. Marina project in Labuan Bajo to cost Rp300 billion DENPASAR - Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said construction of marina port for tourist boats in Labuan Bajo, Flores, would need Rp300 billion. The port would facilitate growing number of international tourist boats visiting that area, the minister told reporters here on Friday. Arief Yahya was here to attend a meeting to strengthen tourism cooperation between the East Nusa Tenggara provincial administration and a US operator of international tourist boats, Carnival. The meeting took place on board the Pacific Eden that landed on the Benoa port, Bali, on Thursday. Also attending the meeting include Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Governor Frans Lebu Raya.

Arief said the budget for the marina project in Labuan Bajo, which is one of the countrys 10 priority destinations would include fund from the state budget and the private sector. “With the fund we would build a big and long port in Labuan Bajo to allow international pleasure boats to land there,” the minister said. He said around the same amount of budget has also been set aside by the government in cooperation with the private sector for development of an airport named Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo. The airport is named after the Komodo island, the habitat of Komodo, the ancient giant lizards, found only in the Indonesian island, which one of World wonders. President inaugurates toll road access to Priok Port

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Saturday inaugurated toll road access to Tanjung Pirok Port, North Jakarta, to enable smooth transportation of goods from and to the seaport.

“The construction of this port was postponed for two years due to land clearance problem when I was the governor of Jakarta,” the Head of State said while inaugurating the operation of the toll road access to Tanjung Priok port in North Jakarta. He stated that the land clearance problem was finally settled after inspection of the locations several times. The construction of the toll road was also delayed due to mistakes in construction structure, which had to be repeated from the beginning. “There were mistakes in the construction structure, which resulted in the removal of at least 69 pillars before it could be started again. That is why the project was delayed by about 5 to 6 years,” Jokowi noted. The 11.4-kilometer access toll road is part of the Jakarta outer ring road. The toll road is integrated with land, sea, and railways-integrated transportation modes from and to Tanjung Priok Seaport. Funded by the Japanese government, the toll road project is constructed with a fund of Rp4.1 trillion through the Japan International Cooperation Agency

Serangan, southeast of the Bali mainland, the Shark Island invites public visitors on educational tours and rare experiences and concerns the species’ protection in mind. The sharks swim in a controlled and safe 10x10m area. The purpose of the project is to educate and inform people of such issues that face the endangered species such as overfishing, and how sharks relate to and benefit in the control of the marine ecosystem. The Bali Sharks project was founded by Hawaii-grown surfer Paul Friese, a conservationist committed to these apex predators. He collaborated with reformed poach-

ing fishermen back in 2011, which led to more sharks being kept in the nursery, some brought in live by fishermen who benefitted more than killing and selling them to the market. The protection of juvenile black reef tips in the Bali Sharks nursery led to more rescues and releases. In further collaboration with the Gili Shark Foundation, Paul managed to complete the project’s shark conservation model. In July 2013, Bali Sharks donated a pair of white and black reef tips to be released in the protected waters of the Gili Eco Trust in Bali’s east neighbouring island of Lombok. Back on Serangan Island, the nursery continues to offer an alternative to young sharks being killed for food, or by accidentally being trapped in fishnets. The Bali Sharks tour suits all ages and experience levels. Even non-swimmers can enjoy feeding and the up-close encounters. The tour also visits Serangan Island’s turtle conservation and education centre, only several minutes’ drive from the nursery site.
