LOS ANGELES \ Audiences were more than curious to check out the big-screen adaptation of the racy phenomenon “Fifty Shades of Grey” this weekend. The erotic drama sizzled in its debut, earning an estimated $81.7 million from 3,646 theaters in its first three days, distributor Universal Pictures said on Sunday. In addition to destroying Valentine’s and Presidents Day weekend records, “Fifty Shades of Grey” has also become the second-highest February debut ever, behind “Passion of the Christ’s” $83.9 million opening in 2004. The chart-topping film cost a modest $40 million to produce. Starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan as Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, it could be on track to earn over $90 million across the four-day holiday weekend. “Our fondest wishes were realized,” said Universal’s President of Domestic Distribution Nick Carpou. “This is one of those moments where I can speak for the entire studio and say we’re celebrating.” Carpou was especially pleased that audiences in large, mid-size, and small markets turned out to see the film despite severe weather challenges in the Northeast. “We had a tremendous amount of interest from small-town exhibitors,” said Carpou, noting strong

outings in the South. “That speaks to their patrons really wanting to see the film as soon as possible and be part of what everyone is talking about.” According to Universal, North American audiences were 68 percent female. Internationally, director Sam Taylor-Johnson’s adaptation of British author E L James’ book earned an estimated $158 million from 9,637 locations in 58 territories. That’s the second biggest international opening for Universal, right behind the $160.3 million debut from “Fast & Furious 6,” and the highest international opening for an R-rated film ever. “Those are summer-style blockbuster numbers in February,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box office firm Rentrak. “Controversy, or at least the conversation that’s created by ‘Fifty Shades of Grey,’ suddenly infuses this movie into the mainstream conversation,” he added. “They

Disapproval of the proposed project is now taking a more serious form with the establishment of the Menjangan Volunteer Forum or For Me. Through this joint declaration the communities share a commitment to reject any kind of tourist accommodations on Menjangan Island. They are taking this position in order to maintain and preserve the sanctity of a number of temples on the island. Promotion and provisions for tourism village facilities still lacking

Tourism villages have now become one of the alternative forms of tourisms that have started to draw the interest of foreign travelers. Based on the potential of nature, human resources and local wisdom, each tourism village can offers its own peculiarities. Unfortunately, the support of the government in helping to promote the many tourism villages spread across Bangli, is far from maximal. Despite the difficulties faced in developing tourist attractions, the number of visitors continues to grow. Recently, the Chief of Undisan tourism village, Komang Adi Sutisna, said that the promotion of tourism villages by the local government was minimal to nonexistent. Promotion of Undisan as a tourism village, is being carried out by individuals. So far the local governement has only focused on improving the quality of human ressources. Funding for the development of tourism villages is mostly provided by the central governement. Up until now, Undisan tourism village has received IDR 170 million worth of funding which has been used to develop human ressources as well as improve facilites for tourists visiting the village. Meanwhile, the Head of the Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency, I Wayan Adnyana, said that tourism promotion was being done through websites, the dissemination of pamphlets and attending tourism exhibitions. When asked about the regional budget allocated for the promotion of tourism villages, Adnyana did

not give exact numbers. He did reveal that the percentage of the regional budget allocated for tourism promotion was based on the needs of each tourism village. Facilities in tourism villages are, by and large still inadequate. Penglipuran tourism village, for instance, despite contributing to the betterment of the region, lacks adequate parking spaces as well as sufficient toilets for the increasing number of visitors. Also the environement around the bamboo forest has already been severely damaged. “Penglipuran tourism village still requires supporting facilities such as a parking lot and toilet but other things as well” said the chief of Penglipuran tourism village management, I Nengah Moneng. Moneng also explained that so far the government has not been very supportive of the tourist attraction. “We have never received any assistance” he said. Currently bamboo craftsmen in Bangli County are being flooded with orders. One of the craftsmen, I Gede Putra Wisatawan, from Nyalian hamlet, Kawan village, said that in 2014 orders for his bamboo crafts rose sharply. “My orders for bamboo craft increased by 70 percent this year” he said on Sunday (Feb 15). In fact the exact percentage of the increase in orders is not yet clear because calculations will only be made at the end of the year. “The increase in orders highly depends on the particular craft item. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Survival for some endangered species hinges on ‘Frozen Zoo’

SAN JOSE, California \ Astronomers looking for alien life have sat for decades by their telescopes, waiting to hear from E.T. It didn’t happen, so now some of them want to beam messages out into the void and invite the closest few thousand worlds to chat or even visit. Others scientists, including Stephen Hawking, think that’s crazy, warning that instead of sweet and gentle E.T., we may get something like the planetconquering aliens from “Independence Day.” The consbsequences, they say, could be catastrophic. But calling out there ourselves may be the only way to find out if we are not alone, and humanity may benefit from alien intelligence, said Douglas A. Vakoch, whose title is director of interstellar message composition at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California. SETI stands for Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, and until now it’s been mostly a listening-type thing. This dispute \ which mixes astronomy, science fiction, philosophy, the law, mathematics and a touch of silliness \ broke out Thursday and Friday at a convention in San Jose of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. And this week several prominent space experts, including Space X founder Elon Musk and planet hunter Geoff Marcy, started a petition cautioning against sending out such messages, saying it is impossible to predict whether extraterrestrial life will be benign or hostile. Vakoch is hosting a separate conference Saturday at the SETI Institute on the calling-all-aliens proposal and what the messages should say.

The idea is called active SETI, and according to Vakoch would involve the beaming of messages via radar and perhaps eventually lasers. There have been a few small and unlikely-to-work efforts to beam messages out there in the past, including NASA sending the Beatles song “Across the Universe” into the cosmos in 2008. NASA’s Voyager probe recently left the solar system with a “golden record” created by Carl Sagan with a message, and the space agency’s New Horizon probe will also have greetings on it by the time it exits the solar system. But what scientists are now talking about is a coordinated and sustained million-dollar-a-year effort with approval from some kind of science or international body and a message that people agree on. It’s an “attempt to join the galactic club,” Vakoch said. He assured a crowd of reporters: “There’s no danger of alien invasion from active SETI.” But as a science fiction author, as well as an astrophysicist, David Brin thinks inviting aliens here is a bad idea. Even if there is a low risk of a nasty creature coming, the consequences could be extreme. “I can’t bring myself to wager my grandchildren’s destiny on unreliable assumptions” about benevolent aliens, Brin said. Brin noted that European explorers

He called for the science community to put efforts on hold for an ethical and scientific discussion. As Brin, Shostak, Vakoch and others sparred at a news conference, 84-yearold Frank Drake sat in the back quietly. Drake, a pioneer in the search for extraterrestrial life, created the formula called Drake’s Equation that scientists use to estimate the chances that other life is out there. More than 40 years ago, Drake and Sagan beamed a message into space to look for aliens, a first for Earth. It was a short message from the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, and it was aimed at a star cluster called Messier 13. It will take 25,000 years to get there, Drake said. “The probability of succeeding is infinitesimally small,” Drake said, rolling out incredible amount of time it takes messages to go back and forth and his estimate that the average civilization will last only 10,000 years. So why’d he do it? Curiosity, Drake said. And it doesn’t matter if our civilization is gone by the time E.T. answers, if he does. “We get messages from the ancient Greeks and Romans and Socrates all the time, long since gone. Still valuable,” Drake said. “We’re going to do the archaeology of the future.” (ap)

ESCONDIDO, California — Whenever an endangered animal dies at the San Diego Zoo, researchers race out, regardless of the hour, to remove its sperm or eggs, maybe a bit of ear or eyeball, and carefully freeze the cells in liquid nitrogen. Today, the survival of the northern white rhinoceros and dozens of other species could hinge on the collection amassed over nearly 40 years that has become the largest gene bank of its kind: The Frozen Zoo. The icy vials may one day be used in experiments to resurrect recently extinct animals, like the Hawaiian Po’ouli bird. The stainless steel tanks hold the genetic material of more than 10,000 individual animals from more than 1,000 species and subspecies. The Frozen Zoo’s work has taken on renewed urgency since the San Diego Safari Park lost 42-year-old Angalifu to cancer in December, leaving only five northern white rhinos left in the world — and all unable to reproduce. Scientists are racing to find the best way to utilize the bank’s frozen sperm to produce another one before the northern white goes extinct, which could happen within a decade. Critics question whether it’s worth spending millions of dollars on species that are down to so few. The bank is valued as a genetic archive that has helped advance artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, cloning and stem cell technology. But debate is stirring over how far such research should go. Paul Ehrlich, a senior fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment at Stanford University, said the world needs to address the problem’s root causes, such as population growth and climate change. “Screwing around with science to save a white rhino might be fun and I would like to see it preserved and am all for biodiversity, but it’s so far down the list of things we should be doing first,” he said. With species going extinct at a faster rate, zoos are taking on greater conservation roles and facing decisions on which animals are worth trying to save. Some may be extinct by the time another one is reproduced and possibly never live in the wild. The northern white’s natural habitat is in countries like Sudan and Congo, which have been unable to stop poachers. The horn is coveted in Asia as an aphrodisiac, creating a market that threatens all rhino species. There’s also the hurdle of producing enough offspring to avoid inbreeding. “We can do all kinds of razzle-dazzle things but it’s one thing to make another animal or two or three, but it’s quite another to make a sustainable population from a genetic standpoint,” said George Seidel, a Colorado State University professor who has written about resurrecting the woolly mammoth. The challenges, however, are not insurmountable for critically endangered species or possibly recently extinct species, said Barbara Durrant, director of reproductive physiology at The San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research, which houses the Frozen Zoo. “We’re not so much interested in bringing back dinosaurs or mammoths,” she said. The Frozen Zoo holds the cell cultures from 12 northern white rhinos — more than the living population: “There have been other species that have come back from numbers that small so we think there is good reason we can do this with the northern white rhino,” she said. Sperm from the Frozen Zoo has been used to reproduce endangered animals from the giant panda to the Chinese monal pheasant. Its frozen cells also were used to clone two endangered types of cattle. The gaur lived only a few days while the banteng survived for seven years before being put down after breaking a leg. Both animals, however, had genetic defects. The northern white rhino and the drill monkey were the first endangered animals to have their cells transformed into stem cells and stored at the Frozen Zoo. Theoretically, stem cells can produce any body tissue. That means thawed stem cells from a male rhino could produce both sperm and egg in the lab, but the method has been done only once — in a mouse. Police target hotels selling liquor without a license

Denpasar

It is very easy to buy liquor in either shops or hotels. However, not all the tourist accommodations have permits for the sale of liquor as set forth in the Denpasar Regional Bylaw (Perda) No.11/2002 on liquor trade. On that account, the West Denpasar Police will comb all hotels in Denpasar that show indications of selling liquor. “Results of the initial investigation indicated there were hotels selling imported liquor, without permission. We will raid all the hotels, especially those in the region of West and North Denpasar” said Chief of West Denpasar Police Criminal Investigation Unit, Muhammad Agustiawan, Sunday (Feb 15). At the very least, added Agustiawan, during the Public Disease Operation 2015, hotels found selling liquor would be dealt with according to the rules. In addition, his party will also be targeting stores or shops alleged to sell liquor. “Within the past two weeks, we have secured 20 bottles of imported liquor of various brands and 22 bottles of wine. At that time, he was the operation target because he became a dealer of crystal meth and marijuana. Having been investigated, the hiding place of the suspect could eventually be tracked. On Friday approximately at 2:25 p.m., police raided the residence of the suspect. Japan says economy grew 2.2 pct in Oct-Dec

TOKYO - Japan’s economy emerged from recession in the last quarter, growing at a 2.2 percent annualized rate as exports and public spending helped to offset weaker residential investment. However, the preliminary data released Monday put growth for the world’s third-largest economy in 2014 flat at 0.0 percent, the slowest rate in three years, while real wages fell 0.1 percent. The economy expanded 0.6 percent in October-December from the previous quarter, a rate that fell below many economists’ expectations. Private investment that remained anemic, suggesting that businesses and households, which account for the lion’s share of growth, remain cautious about spending. “The weakness in domestic demand supports our view that output will essentially be flat this year,” Marcel Thieliant of Capital Economics said in a commentary. The government revised earlier growth figures, suggesting the technical recession of two straight months of contraction was milder than earlier reported. The economy suffered two straight quarters of contraction following a sales tax hike in April, prompting Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to push back until April 2017 a tax hike planned for October of this year. The economy contracted at a minus 0.6 percent pace in JulySeptember, Monday’s data showed, compared to the earlier reported minus 1.9 percent pace. The contraction in April-July was revised

upward from minus 7.3 percent to minus 1.7 percent. Many economists had forecast an exit from recession in the October-December quarter thanks partly to stronger demand in the U.S., Japan’s largest export market. Abe has sought to foster sustained growth through massive injections of cash into the economy, primarily through central bank asset purchases similar to those used in the U.S. under the Federal Reserve’s quantitative easing policy. The ultra-loose monetary policy is meant to spur inflation and counter years of deflationary stagnation, but so far Japan remains far short of the government and central bank’s target of 2 percent. More than two years into his administration, Abe is struggling to get growth back on a sustainable path and make a “new start.” In a major policy speech last week, he vowed to push through the biggest reforms in Japan since World War II, reiterating pledges for sweeping reforms of the government bureaucracy, labor regulations and other policies to catalyze growth. “Now is the time. South Korea finally gets a new prime minister SEOUL - South Korean President Park Geun-Hye finally got a new prime minister on her third attempt Monday, despite claims by opposition lawmakers that her nominee was morally unfit for the office. Lee Wan-Koo, a senior legislator from Park’s ruling Saenuri party, was approved in parliament by 148 votes to 128 after a tortuous nomination process. A largely symbolic post in South Korea where power is concentrated in the executive, the prime minister is the only cabinet member whose nomination requires parliamentary approval. Outgoing premier Chung HongWon had resigned way back in April last year amid strident public criticism of the government’s response to the Sewol ferry disaster that claimed more than 300 lives. President Park’s popularity ratings also plunged in the wake of the Sewol tragedy and her political fortunes were not helped by several failed attempts to appoint Chung’s successor.

Her first nominee, a retired Supreme Court justice, was forced to withdraw because of criticism over the large income he earned in private practice after leaving the bench. The second, former journalist Moon Chang-Keuk, withdrew over comments he made suggesting Japan’s repressive colonial rule on the Korean peninsula was “God’s will”. Apparently fearful of another nominee battle, a chastened Park was left with little choice but to retrospectively reject Chung’s initial resignation. Lee’s nomination when it came was a similarly fraught process.

The main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD) had urged him to withdraw voluntarily, accusing him of speculating in real estate and of buying a high-class apartment with illegal political funds. At his confirmation hearing, NPAD also disclosed a recording of Lee’s conversation with reporters pressuring them to stop carrying negative reports about him. A Gallup Korea survey in January found that Park’s approval rating hit an all-time low of 29 percent, posing a growing threat to her drive to resuscitate the sluggish economy. (afp)

Surabaya - As many as 13 bodies of victims of crashed AirAsia flight QZ8501 remain unidentified on the 50th day of identification process on Sunday as the bodies have gone beyond identification and DNA data are not complete. Three of the 13 bodies only consisted of body parts, spokesman of the East Java provincial police Snr. Comsr. Awi Setiyono said. “The 13 bodies which cannot yet be identified are still kept in the cold storage of the Bhayangkara Police Hospital in East Java,” he said. He said the Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team of the Bhayangkara Police Hospital would try to identify the remaining 13 bodies by gathering DNA data from different parties including the Indonesian Police Headquarters. “We will resume the identification of the remaining bodies at the Bhayangkara Hospital on Monday (February 16),” he said. Earlier, on Friday (February 13), the DVI team managed to identify eight bodies and two body parts of victims. Chief of the East Java provincial police Insp. Gen. Anas Yusuf said a total of 89 bodies had been identified during the identification process. The AirAsia Airbus A320-200 carrying 162 people had gone missing on the morning of December 28 after losing contact with air traffic control on its way from Surabaya, East Java, to Singapore. Flight QZ8501 lost contact after the pilot sought permission to climb to 38 thousand feet from 32 thousand feet to avoid stormy weather over the sea between Bangka Belitung and West Kalimantan. Gen Budi Gunawan new police chief after the court decided corruption charge against him is invalid. “Everyone should accept the the pretrial courts decision and installment of Budi Gunawan should put an end to the polemic over the police general,” Karel, the executive director of POINT Indonesia, said here on Monday. Judge Sarpin Rizaldi favored the lawsuit filed by Budi Gunawan against a decision of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) that declared him a corruption suspect. Budi Gunawan was the sole candidate proposed last month by the president to the House of Representatives (DPR). However, the day before the Commission III of the DPR held the fit and proper test for the candidate, KPK declared Budi Gunawan a corruption suspect. The DPR, despite the status of being a suspect, gave its approval for Budi Gunawan as a new police chief. The conflict began that dragged

until today with police “receiving” law suits against all remaining four leaders of KPK. The situation threw President Jokowi into an unpleasant situation whether to install or not to install Budi Gunawan. His latest promise was to make his decision after the process of pretrial is over. We have to first read it thoroughly,” KPKs Deputy Chairman for Prevention Unit Johan Budi stated here on Monday. South Jakarta District Court Judge Sarpin Rizaldi in a final pretrial hearing here Monday accepted Commissioner General Budi Gunawans pretrial motion, affirming that KPKs move naming Gunawan a graft suspect was illegitimate. KPK investigators accused Budi Gunawan of receiving bribes through suspicious transactions when he headed the Police Headquarters Career Planning Bureau during 2003-2006 and held other posts in police. Gunawan later filed a pretrial suit challenging KPKs move of naming him a graft suspect. “KPK will soon write to the South Jakarta District Court for a copy of its verdict. It will study the verdict before deciding its stand on the court ruling,” Johan Budi remarked. He stated that KPK leaders, its legal bureau team, structural officials and investigators had met to discuss the South Jakarta District Courts decision. South Jakarta District Courts Judge Sarpin Rizaldi ruled that KPKs letter of investigation order No.03/01/2015 dated January 12, 2015, which named Budi Gunawan a suspect was illegitimate and did not have any legal binding. “As I always say, in principle, KPK, as a law enforcing institution, will always respect legal processes, including this (South Jakarta District Courts) pretrial decision,” Johan Budi stressed.(ant)

Atlanta’s Kyle Korver made seven 3-pointers and scored 21 points for the East, while Washington’s John

Wall had 19. But right from the start, the players were sharing the stage. Christina Aguilera appeared from behind a giant big apple, and belted out some New York-inspired numbers to start the show, joined on stage by the Rockettes. McLaren suspension ‘blockers’ could reappear McLaren has not ruled out returning to its radical rear suspension blocker system later this season, even though the concept did not appear on its new Formula 1 car. The Woking-based team caused a stir last season when its 2014 F1 challenger featured the innovative idea at the rear of its car. The system was believed to be a way of increasing downforce at low speed and reducing drag at high speed - although rival teams were not totally convinced of its benefits and felt it actually hampered top speeds. With the new Honda-powered MP4-30 reverting to a more standard suspension system, it

had been thought that McLaren had abandoned the blocker idea totally. However, engineering director Matt Morris says that the current suspension concept may not stay, and further ideas like the blockers could yet be introduced. “What we have done is we have designed a rear suspension layout that gives us options to do different things, shall I say,” explained Morris. “At the moment we are not running the same spec as we did last year. “But with the layout we have got it allows us flexibility if we want to test some different things.”

LONDON - Arsene Wenger paid tribute on Sunday to his FA Cup match winner Olivier Giroud, recognising how the Frenchman has improved and become a more complete striker in his three years in London. Giroud again demonstrated the quality which persuaded Cup holders Arsenal to pay around 10 million pounds ($15.42 million) for his services as he scored both goals in a decisive two-minute spell to sink Middlesbrough 2-0 in the fifth round. The player who has not always convinced at Arsenal, despite that peacock strut about him, is these days properly showing off the feathers, this brace taking his tally for the season to 10 goals, even though he missed nearly three months of the campaign with a broken foot. Giroud’s first goal came straight out of the Arsenal manual of beautiful team goals, a neat first-time finish to end some bewilderingly fine interplay involving all the players. The second was the sharpest of instant volleys from Alexis Sanchez’s corner. “A consequence of intelligence and technique,” said Wenger. While Sanchez and Welbeck buzz around, there remains only one job for Giroud. “I believe Welbeck’s doing extremely well. He can play central striker like he did for a long time but the most natural centre forward we have is Giroud,” said Wenger. “All the strikers we have can play in different positions. Injuries hit PSG as they prepare for Chelsea test PARIS - Paris St Germain were never going to start as favourites against Chelsea in their Champions League last 16 clash but Saturday’s catalogue of injuries has damaged the French champions’ chances even further at the worst possible time. PSG were cruising to a 2-0 victory against Caen in Ligue 1 but a series of injuries meant they finished the game with nine men and conceded two late goals in a 2-2 draw that left them third in the table. Among those injured were utility back Marquinhos and forward Lucas, who were set to start the first leg against Chelsea at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday, a repeat of last year’s quarter-final which the London club won on away goals. Gregory van der Wiel and Ezequiel Lavezzi are likely to deputise but manager Laurent Blanc will also be without the injured Yohan Cabaye and Serge Aurier. These problems only put more pressure on Blanc, who will feel further heat from PSG’s Qatari owners if the club fail to qualify.
