Red Bull boss backs Vettel to improve

Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz has warned rival F1 teams that Sebastian Vettel will ‘only get stronger’ during the 2012 season as the German seeks to successfully defend his title for the second time. Vettel stormed to the title in 2011 having clinched the 2010 crown in the final race of the year in Abu Dhabi, with his title defence being one of the most dominant campaigns seen in F1 for some time. Already, the new RB8 has shown encouraging potential in pre-season testing and Mateschitz warned that Vettel is only going to continue improving as his experience of F1 increases. “He still has great potential ahead of him because his experience, his consistency and his domination in different situations will be given free rein,” he told Speedweek.

“His focus in qualifying was already part of his strength but he’s going to be even stronger in competition because he knows the complexity of his sport even better now.” Mateschitz has already insisted that Vettel’s teammate Mark Webber would get equality this season as Red Bull looks to wrap up both titles.

The reprimand was issued on a joint site inspection led by the Head of Badung Agency for Regional Development (Bappeda) and Research and Development Agency, I Wayan Suambara, Wednesday (Feb 15). In the inspection, the team encountered a deposition of materials on the project in the form of sand in the drains. It could happen as a result of the disposal process of water in the hotel basement that did not implement a good filtration system. “In fact, the water discharged into the drainage channel contained a lot of sand ore content. Then, it accumulated and made the drainage shallow. When it rained, it caused flooding. Bali Logistic Agency awaits data revision from central authority

Denpasar (Bali Post)—

The increasing poverty rate in Bali, as reported by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali recently, was not necessarily accompanied with the increasing provision of rice for the poor (raskin) distributed by Bali Logistic Agency (Bulog). The head of the agency, Sutisna, said on Wednesday (Feb 15) the amount of additional distribution of rice for the poor was not the competency of Bulog Bali. In this regard, it only received the orders from central authority to distribute rice for the poor pursuant to the specified allocation. “We ourselves are unable to increase the allocation arbitrarily because it highly depends on the central authority. Data of poverty rate obtained from each province will be submitted to central BPS, and this agency would then do the selection and coordination with the central Logistic Agency related to distribution of the rice for the poor,” he explained. Concerning with the possibility of increasing the number of rice for the poor in keeping with the increase in poverty, Sutisna said it could happen in accordance with the latest data of BPS. “Such addition will depend on the existing fund allocation in the Ministry of Finance. Please keep in mind that rice for the poor is allocated per family, not per individual,” he explained. He also said in the distribution of rice for the poor in Bali for January-May 2012, the Logistic Agency still used the data of PPLS

Bali in 2008 where the total amount of rice was 2,022,060 kilograms for 134,804 families and each family got 15 kilograms. Meanwhile, for the period of June-December, the Logistic Agency would use the data of PPLS 2011. “In 2012, there will be a revision in June for January-December period. As scheduled, it will be disseminated in April,” he explained. Based on the provincial upper limit of the rice-for-the-poor disbursement in 2012, there was a decrease in the number of beneficiaries in three regencies namely Badung, Denpasar and Jembrana. “Possibly, there is indeed a decrease or increase of poverty rate in the 9 regencies and municipality in Bali. However, it does not influence the upper limit that has been determined by central authority. Even, this will be used to supplement the deficiencies in each region. For

instance, the allocation of Denpasar whose recipient declines will be moved to Karangasem. Essentially, in this case the Logistic Agency is always ready to distribute the rice for the poor pursuant to the data from central authority,” he said. To cover the poor family that did not obtain allocation of rice for the poor, Sutisna hoped the regional government could allocate a fund from the regional budget. “The rice can be purchased from Logistic Agency and we are ready to provide the stock. Similar mechanism has been undertaken in the East Java, precisely in Sidoarjo,” he said. Just a reminder, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali noted the increase of poverty rate in 2011 (through September) reached 8,200 people. Students display scarecrows in Lovina area THERE are many ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day. If many people do it by exchanging chocolates and flowers, the students majoring in the Fine Arts of Undiksha Singaraja even did it differently. They displayed some scarecrows in Lovina tourist resort on Wednesday night (Feb 14). The display of scarecrow installation art attracted the attention of many people in Lovina. A number of tourists also thronged and saw the uniqueness of Balinese scarecrows usually mounted in the middle of the rice fields. There were dozens of scarecrows on display in the area. They were displayed on the vacant land on the roadside of Jalan Raya Seririt-Singaraja. On that account, every person passing on the road section would turn and wonder about the relationship of scarecrow to Valentine’s Day. Wayan Sudiarta, a lecturer of Fine Arts Department at Undiksha, said the scarecrow was a part of the installation art with a very simple and inexpensive medium and could be made by everyone. Therefore, such an art could be followed by the public and they reaped the mean-

ing and benefits of a healthy communication process through an art activity. Sudiarta said the installation art display opened a direct and meaningful communication in the midst of an increasingly sophisticated communication technology today. In this era of advanced technology, the communication could be done easily. People in Bali could communicate with others at a distance of thousands of kilometers. However, direct communication with the art medium would give a different meaning. The scarecrow, though it was an inanimate object, could give a long description on the communication of human to human, human to environment and human to God. By and large, the scarecrows were placed in the middle of rice fields, but now they were put in the middle of a modern environment describing the long journey of history. “It is not a counter-technology. Hundreds of traders in East Amlapura traditional market confused Amlapura (Bali Post)—

Hundreds of traders in the traditional markets of East Amlapura, Karangasem, were confused. It happened because the temporary kiosks prepared at Karangsokong have not accomplished yet, while they have been told to move. Consequently, they were confused as the new location was not ready to occupy. Some were crying as they did not get a place to do selling. It was based on observation in the Karangsokong Market, Wednesday (Feb 15). The East Amlapura Market was closed and all the traders had not been allowed to make transaction since Monday (Feb 13) whereas the buyers and customers continuously flocked to the narrow market. Some traders served their customers outside the market because the door of traditional market had been padlocked. A total of 800 traders were given an opportunity to remove their merchandise to Karangsokong for a week from Monday (Feb 13) until next Monday

(Feb 20). Such condition was deplored by Chairman of the Karangasem House, I Gede Dana, Wednesday (Feb 15). He had a pity on those hundreds of traders because the temporary kiosks buildings were not ready to occupy. However, they had been moved by force. “Ideally, the temporary kiosks should be accomplished first, and then they were given a deadline to move. By doing so, they will be quiet and no traders will cry as getting no place to do selling. Some of them are small communities relying on their livelihood of trading in the market or the place of farmers to sell their agricultural products. On that account, they should get good service and treatment,” he said. Lin happy to smash stereotypes by living the NBA dream Reuters

NEW YORK - New York Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin is trying not to get caught up in the buzz generated by his explosion onto the NBA scene but the Taiwanese-American point guard is glad to be helping break down stereotypes. The league’s only Taiwanese-American player was neither recruited by a major college basketball power nor drafted by any NBA team and after playing only 29 games in the league last season, was cut by two clubs before being signed by the Knicks. After using his pinpoint passing to extend the Knicks’ winning streak to seven with a 100-85 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday, Lin said he was happy to show that Asian-Americans could thrive in the NBA as could players from elite academic institutions such as his alma mater Harvard. “There are definitely stereotypes, obviously,” Lin said about preconceived notions about AsianAmericans being able to compete at the NBA level. “There’s a lot of them. The more we can do to break those down by the day, the better we’ll become. Hopefully in the near future we’ll see a lot more Asians and Asian-Americans playing basketball in the NBA.” California-born Lin said he was looking forward to returning to the homeland of his parents after the NBA season to host a basketball camp. “I did that last summer as well,” the soft-spoken 23-yearold said. “I have a strong passion for the game and I have a strong

The camaraderie on this team is just ridiculous. It’s just a joy to be around them every day. You show up to the practice facility and it’s all smiles across the board. That’s the beauty of team sports and that’s the beauty of basketball.”

Not so long ago, Phelps was measuring the countdown to his final Olympic appearance in years. Then it was months, then weeks. Now it is days. “Not long now, it’s less than 170 days now,” he told Reuters during a visit to New York City for the global launch of Head and Shoulders’ “Wash In Confidence” campaign. For Phelps, the countdown will soon come down to hours then minutes, although his success will ultimately be judged by fractions of seconds. In the world of Olympic swimming, gold medals can be decided by margins as tiny as a fingernail,

and no one knows that better than Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics after surviving two close calls. However, due to lack of budget, the repair was given priority to classrooms of the grade 5 and 6. Yet, the execution was not maximal because many buffering frames of the roof were damaged by the falling tree. Other than the matter of wet books, Sulasmi also complained about the damaged roofs on the other school buildings due to age. The most severe condition happened to the roofs of the grade 1-4. More sadly, the school only had one general teacher. Luckily, Sulasmi said there were two volunteer teachers in the school with honorarium of IDR 100,000 per month. Sulasmi hoped that government could act quickly to cope with the damage to school because when it rained the teaching and learning activities were always disturbed. Teachers and students were also anxious if they would be toppled by the building with fragile and leaky roofs. The Head of Tabanan Education Agency, Wayan Adnyana, justified the condition of SDN 2 Senganan. Even, he mentioned that its condition was the most severe among the other schools. This official asserted that his party still proposed the budget to central government for the refurbishment. “We have proposed to the central authority, but we do not know when the budget will be disbursed,” he said. The agency also proposed the relocation of the school. On that account, based on the decision of residents, the school would be relocated to new location that was not so far from the previous one. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Astronauts and robots have united in space with a healthy handshake. The commander of the International Space Station, Daniel Burbank, shook hands Wednesday with Robonaut. It’s the first handshake ever between a human and a humanoid in space. NASA’s Robonaut was launched aboard space shuttle Discovery last February. Crews have been testing it to see how it one day might help astronauts perform space station chores. On Wednesday, ground controllers activated computer software that enabled the robot to extend its right hand, fingers outstretched. Burbank took the mechanical hand and pumped it up and down, as the robot’s fingers tightened around his hand. “The first human-humanoid handshake in space,” Burbank proclaimed.

A cheer went up in the control room in Huntsville, Ala. “For the record, it was a firm handshake,” Burbank radioed. “Quite an impressive robot.” Robonaut — the first humanoid in space, built from the waist up — said via Twitter that it was an awesome experience, then followed up with some sign language. “The handshake was definitely one of the highlights of the day, but I’m not done yet,” Robonaut said in a tweet. According to EPFL, “16,000 objects larger than 10 centimetres in diameter and hundreds of millions of smaller particles are ripping around the earth at speeds of several kilometres per second.” “It has become essential to be aware of the existence of this debris and the risks that are run by its proliferation,” said Claude Nicollier, an astronaut and EPFL professor. The space centre said it was moving beyond rhetoric to “take immediate action to get this stuff out of orbit.” Centre spokesman Jerome Grosse said two options are being considered for the cleaning satellites. One is a machine that scoops

Review: ‘Bullhead’ marks a fierce debut

“Bullhead,” the Academy Award-nominated foreign-language film from Belgium, is a dark, haunting and wholly original exploration of what it means to be a man. Writer-director Michael R. Roskam’s auspicious feature film debut initially looks like a crime thriller, full of shady figures making secret nighttime deals, with a tension and a seamy, muted color palette reminiscent of David Fincher. But eventually it reveals itself to be a character drama about the way the past shapes us and our inability to escape it, no matter how convincingly we believe we’ve transformed ourselves. Matthias Schoenaerts gives a fierce and frightening turn as Jacky, a steroidaddicted cattle rancher who works out an arrangement with some meat-trading Flemish mobsters, only to try and back out when an investigating federal agent is gunned down. This sequence of events forces him to revisit a horrific incident from his childhood 20 years ago, as well as the people who were crucial to that pivotal moment. Schoenaerts turns Jacky into a hulking beast given to volatile fits of

rage; the performance calls to mind Tom Hardy’s startling, muscular work in his own breakthrough film, 2009’s “Bronson.” The sight of Jacky curled in the fetal position in his sparse bathroom or shadow boxing in silhouette in front of a window after he’s just injected himself with hormones gets a little repetitive, but it’s always dramatically shot. These moments also serve as a window to Jacky’s true self. His jittery attempts to reconnect with his boyhood crush, a vibrant woman named Lucia (Jeanne Dandoy), who now runs a perfume store in the French-speaking part of the country, are heartbreaking because he’s so clearly uncomfortable in his own skin. He makes you feel the loneliness beneath his sad eyes and massive frame, his awkwardness and a desperate need to be loved. Lucia is also a key figure in the

event that damaged him as a boy. The other is Diederik (a creepy Jeroen Perceval), who was his best friend back then but now works for the mob — although as “Bullhead” reveals, alliances are fluid things and no one is to be trusted in a world where everyone is looking out for himself. This is also true of a couple of bumbling, Frenchspeaking mechanics, who ostensibly are introduced to provide comic relief but feel a bit out of place. But “Bullhead” does keep you guessing by lulling you in with a quiet suspense, which makes the punctuations of violence — some of which are quite brutal — seem like even more of a shock. Jacky warns us in voiceover off the top that we’re all screwed (although he uses a more explicit word that we can’t repeat here). In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

COMAYAGUA, Honduras — A fire started by an inmate tore through an overcrowded prison in Honduras, burning and suffocating screaming men in their locked cells as rescuers desperately searched for keys. Officials confirmed 358 dead Wednesday, making it the world’s deadliest prison fire in a century.

Site manager of the project, Donald Senduk, had denied and showed if his party had dredged the sand accumulating in the drainage. But, such denial indicated the weakness of the project. The sand dredged from the drainage was just left to pile on the sidewalk. Instantly, it made Suambara angrier. “Dredging in the drainage channel has been done, but the sand is then placed on the sidewalk. Of course, this way will cause our infrastructure not to last longer or it will be quickly broken,” said Suambara. In response to those findings, Suambara asked the project owner to be responsible for the project and immediately repaired it. Similarly, Suambara reprimanded the owner to resolve the problem within a week. Otherwise, the Badung Highways and Irrigation Agency and Public Order Agency would coordinate to take a stern action against the project. Meanwhile, a legislator of the Badung House, I Gusti Anom Gumanti said the Kuta Mall Hotel project had been running for about a year. As planned, the hotel would be integrated with a shopping mall. BUSINESS Foreclosure activity edges higher in January

LOS ANGELES — Banks took back more U.S. homes in January than in the previous month, the latest sign that foreclosures are accelerating after slowing sharply last year while lenders sorted out foreclosure-abuse claims. Foreclosures rose 8 percent nationally last month from December, but were down 15 percent from a year earlier, foreclosure listing firm RealtyTrac Inc. said Thursday. Despite the annual decrease at the national level, some states posted sharp increases compared to January 2011. In New Hampshire, foreclosures jumped 62 percent. In Massachusetts, 75 percent. That trend is expected to strengthen this year in light of last week’s $25 billion settlement between the nation’s biggest mortgage lenders and 49 state attorneys general over the industry’s handling of foreclosures. Many banks and mortgage servicers processed foreclosures without verifying documents. Some employees signed papers they hadn’t read or used fake signatures to speed foreclosures — a practice dubbed “robo-signing.” Major banks temporarily put foreclosures on hold after the

problems surfaced in the fall of 2010. Some had to refile previously filed foreclosure cases and revisit pending cases to prevent errors. Those delays and uncertainty over state and federal probes into the industry’s foreclosure practices led to a sharp slowdown in foreclosure activity last year. The settlement between the banks and state attorneys general helps clarify the rules banks must follow to foreclose on borrowers, said Daren Blomquist, a vice president at RealtyTrac. That will pave the way for more foreclosures, he said. “The settlement will accelerate the foreclosures that are happening this year and it will accelerate the process of lenders catching up on the backlog of foreclosures that has been building up over the last year and a half,” Blomquist said. Credit rating agency Fitch Ratings also anticipates foreclosures will climb nationally this year,

but not right away, noting it will take some time for lenders and mortgage servicers to make sure they are in compliance with the rules set forth in the settlement. “You probably are going to see the pace pick up as the year goes on,” said Grant Bailey, a managing director at Fitch. Even so, the rise in foreclosures isn’t expected to be uniform nationwide. That’s because the settlement isn’t likely to ease the backlog of foreclosure cases in states where courts play a role in the process. In addition, some states have taken steps to slow lenders down. Throughout the housing downturn Nevada has had the nation’s highest foreclosure rate. There, a law that went into effect in October requires that foreclosure documents must be filed in the county where a property is located and a lender must provide a notarized affidavit detailing their legal right to proceed.

WASHINGTON - World Bank President Robert Zoellick said on Wednesday he will step down in June and Washington pledged to name a replacement candidate within weeks for a job that has always gone to an American. The Obama administration said it would open the process to competition, marking the first time it has shown willingness to loosen its grip on the world’s top development lender. Zoellick took the reins at the Bank in 2007 after a staff revolt pushed out Paul Wolfowitz, and he moved quickly to return the institution’s focus to alleviating poverty. Developing countries have for years pressed for a greater voice in leading global financial institutions and are likely to stress the importance of a competitive process, but the United States is still widely expected to retain its hold on the job. “It is very important that we continue to have strong, effective leadership of this important institution, and in the coming weeks, we plan to put forward a candidate with experience and requisite qualities to take this institution forward,” U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said in a statement. While Geithner called for an “open and expeditious process,” analysts say Washington can ill afford to give up the post without risking U.S. Congress cutting funding for the bank. The prisons directorate general never received money to allow the FBI to question people being held in several Indonesian state penitentiaries, he said. He admitted the prisons directorate general was cooperating with several foreign governments including the US under an International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance (ICITAP)program. The cooperation with the US in the ICITAP program covered the formulation of guidelines on the handling of high-risk prisoners, the designing of modules to train prison staff in treating or handling high-risk inmates. PONTIANAK - Only five out of 1,800 hospitals existing in Indonesia are currently accredited internationally, and all five are privatelyowned, Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih said. Bali Today British tourists to Bali up 6.68 percent Antara

DENPASAR - A total of 102,989 British tourists to the island paradise of Bali last year increased by 6.68 pct compared to 96,536 in 2010. “Most of them came through Ngurah Rai airport in Bali straight from their country and only a few came by sea on board cruise ships,” head of the Bali Central Board of Statistics (BPS) Gede Suarsa said. He said British people going to Bali on a holiday is one of the ten destinations with the biggest number of tourists. The United Kingdom is ninth after Australia, China, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, South Korea, France and Singapore. The UK contributed 3.64 pct of the number of foreign tourists to Bali totalling 2.82 million in

2011, up by 9.73 pct compared to the previous year’s 2.56 million. Gede Suarsa said of the ten countries with the biggest number of tourists to Bali, nine increased, and only one country declined in their number of tourists. Balinese Wedding

The pawiwahan (marriage, weddings of a Hindu couple) is a very important part of Balinese social life. The ritual generally takes place in the home of the groom, a further confirmation of the typical patriarchal inclinations of Balinese culture, and is performed by a priest. The newlyweds to be, dressed in very colorful and refined garments, worn only for the day of the wedding, will withdraw in prayer in the family temple. This is followed by the presentation of offerings in the pelinggih and by a series of ritual gestures. A very typical moment in the ceremony occurs when the bride offers the groom several different beverages: a conventional way to reiterate that the woman. as a wife, commits herself to obeying her husband and to lovingly care for him for the rest of their lives. Many Balinese marriages are still prearranged or negotiated, though young men may also “kidnap” their wives, and mixed-caste marriages are increasingly common. Marriage customs differ from caste to caste and village to village, but all Balinese marriage practices share fundamental similarities. There are basically two ways to get married on Bali, ‘ngerorod’ and ‘mapadik’. Ngerorod

This is marriage by elopement, in

which the prearranged honeymoon precedes the wedding ceremony. Since it’s otherwise quite expensive to marry on Bali, ‘ngerorod’ is becoming more and more popular. It has particular appeal to the Balinese sense of theater. Balinese love a spectacular kidnapping in which friends of the suitor capture a woman in the fields, on the road, or down by the river. Theatrics are paramount: she is expected to bite and kick her abductors in mock self-defense. These days it’s more stylish and fashionable for the woman to be whisked away in a hired sedan, and more often than not she goes willingly. The couple then repairs to a friend’s house stocked with provisions, offerings, and the bride’s wardrobe. The woman’s infuriated father sounds the alarm demanding to know what has become of his daughter. A search party is organized which eventually returns unsuccessful and exhausted. Meanwhile, the couple is consummating the marriage before special offerings (sesayut tabuh rah) have the time to wilt. These offerings alone make the marriage binding by customary law. Emissaries of the groom visit the bride’s father to argue the advantages of the union. Begrudgingly, the girl’s father gives in, after a suitable bride price has been agreed upon. The groom’s father must finance

and conduct the marriage ceremony, welcoming the bride as a new daughter into the family. The actual public wedding, within 42 days of the staged kidnapping, is only an official confirmation of their union. They are already married in the eyes of the gods. Mepadik

This is marriage by consent, in which an upper-class couple conducts a formal courtship. Since daughters were once regarded as property useful for attaining a family’s social and political goals, high-caste families tried to wed a son to the daughter of a friend or relative so a blood bond would unite the resources of both families. Under no circumstances may a woman “marry down,” i.e., take a commoner. The preferred marriage is through a parallel patri-cousin, the father’s brother’s daughter. It has been noted that Triwangsa couples often get along so well because they are all first cousins. Traditionally, the man or his father journeys three times to the bride’s house with food and ‘sirih’. When the bride’s family visits, the groom’s father is obliged to give them food, ‘sirih’ is chewed (an ancient, ritualistic means of coming to agreement), and presents are exchanged. The groom then regularly visits the home of his prospective bride, presenting gifts

and performing services for his future father-in-law. The groom’s family arranges and pays for the wedding; the date set well in advance on a propitious day. Wedding guests are often entertained by professional storytellers and musicians. Enormously detailed rules govern dining and seating arrangements. Sometimes the bride’s family is not even invited. The actual ceremony varies. It could be very simple and short, presided over by a common temple ‘pemangku’, or it may be elaborate, expensive, and go on all day. Both the bride and groom dress in bright ‘songket’, with brocades of gold thread, and the woman’s hair is decorated with glittering gold flowers. Usually the bride and groom offer food to one another, then simulate such domestic duties such as washing, cooking rice, and cutting bamboo. Prayers are intoned, and then the couple eats together in public, feeding each other. This is an important symbolic act, as in former times only married men and women were allowed to eat food together in public. The priest then performs a ritual purification and blesses the couple. Neither rice nor flowers are thrown. Today there could very well be a Western-style buffet reception held afterward where speeches are offered by members of the two families. (IBP/Doc)

Balinese Culture Sudaji Village

A Tourism Village Relying on Fruit Trees

SINCE about a year ago, the name of Sudaji Village in Sawan Subdistrict seemed to have been very wellknown. However, the village turns so famous is not because of its green area or sustainable forests, but due to various legal and political issues. For instance, it related to corruption of the national land certification program (Prona) and the fuss between the Village Representative Agency (BPD) and a group of residents whose case has not been resolved so far. Fortunately, in the midst of such political upheaval, a group of residents has a noble determination to develop the potential of the village by declaring Sudaji Village as a tourism village. It was conducted on Friday (Nov 11). The declaration was attended by leaders of customary village and tourism businesspeople of the village. Present on that occasion was the Head of Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency, Putu Tastra Wijaya, who gave full support to Sudaji as a tourism village. Putu Tastra Wijaya said that Sudaji Village had met the requirement as a tourism village. However, he also hoped it could be supported seriously by the entire community

because some villages declared as tourism village were unable to continue with the visit of tourists. “I think Sudaji has qualified as having the potential nature and culture,” he said. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Sudaji Tourism Village Committee, Gede Suharsana, explained the idea to make Sudaji a tourism village was inseparable from the desire of residents to conserve the nature, art and culture of Sudaji. As a matter of fact, Sudaji had abundant potential of nature and culture. Now, they just stayed to be preserved and promoted. Regarding the wealth of nature, Sudaji Village indeed realized the potential they had. Since long time ago, their ancestors indeed liked to cultivate many kinds of fruits plants, chiefly local fruits. Around 19601970s, the famous fruits of Sudaji were Malaysian mango and lanzone. After the hybrid seedlings of durian and rambutan came to Bali, residents of the village bordering with Suwug Village in the north and verdant hills in the south set to cultivate Acehnese rambutan and Bangkok durian. So, please do not be surprised

if Sudaji has tens of thousands of fruit trees. From the existing data, at the end of 1998 were recorded 1,000 rambutan trees, 1,000 lanzone trees, 200 Malaysian mango trees, 200 mangosten trees, 5,000 coconut trees, 1,000 durian trees and 500 mango trees. Other than fruit trees, the village also had some 3,000 clove trees and 4,000 coffee trees. Within the past three years, local residents started to plant Bangkok durian. Apart from having relatively good price, the durian was more expensive than the other fruits. Now, the Bangkok durian from Sudaji had many lovers so it was always hunted. “Recently, many tourists were indeed watching the fruits while enjoying them at Sudaji Village,” said a resident of Sudaji. In relation to the forest, Sudaji Customary Village is the village that had received a national champion in the field of forest conservation. Local residents believe if forest can be taken advantage as a tourist attraction. Additionally, the architecture of local buildings remains natural so it can also be enjoyed by tourists who do love natural objects. (BTN/kmb)

Good to Help Rejuvenation Purple yam is not only delicious to eat, but also interesting to be made into a beverage in the form of syrup. Aside from being fresh, this purple syrup also contains an anti-oxidant substance helping rejuvenate the bodily cells, so that you will look younger. The fruit which is also high in potassium has B6, vitamin C, and fiber, so the yam is very good for you. There are two types of purple yam: the Filipino “ube” or “ubi”, which has darker, rougher-looking skin. It grows on a vine above the ground, so is quite different from regular yams. This vegetable is a major crop and food source in the Philippines. It is also made into a powder which is then used in Filipino desserts. The Purple Okinawan Sweet Potato is grown underground and is similar to Western sweet potatoes and yams. From the outside the purple yam / sweet potato looks the same, but cut one open and you’ll know the difference! These yams are wonderful boiled, steamed, or baked alongside regular yams and sweet potatoes. The great advantages gained from the plant is deriving the people to produce to product from the purple yam. One of them is purple yam juice crated in the western part of Bali. This traditional drink is usually consumed by the people of Jembrana, and often served for guests of Jembrana Regency Government. Indeed, this kind of syrup is produced by housewives group coalesced into PKK from Penyaringan Village, Mendoyo, Jembrana. “At least, there are five groups making syrup of purple yam in Jembrana,” said Dwik Irawati, one of the syrup makers when met in the arena of Bali Arts Festival 2011 who participated in the culinary festival at the Art Center Denpasar on Sunday (Jun 12). According to Dwik, the purple yam syrup had obtained license and trade mark, so it was widely sold in stalls and supermarkets. The syrup made without preservatives could last up to 14 days in cold temperatures. Meanwhile, ingredients used to make the purple yam syrup consisted of yam, sugar, salt, water and lemon juice. Then, the tools required for the preparation were blender, pans, strainer, spatula, stove and sterile bottle. For preparation, first of all, cleanse finely the purple yam and peel it off. Then, chop, add water and blend it. Furthermore, strain and add sugar, salt, and cook the batter in a saucepan. Stir it until slightly thickening. After that, chill and put it into sterilized bottle. Now, it is ready to be served. To make it more delicious, you can optionally add lime and ice cubes. The drink can become other option for those who like healthy and refreshing drink. (BTN/015)

It happened because the temporary kiosks prepared at Karangsokong have not accomplished yet, while they have been told to move. Consequently, they were confused as the new location was not ready to occupy. Some were crying as they did not get a place to do selling. It was based on observation in the Karangsokong Market, Wednesday (Feb 15).
