World’s eight richest as wealthy as half humanity, Oxfam tells Davos

In 2010, by comparison, it took the combined assets of the 43 richest people to equal the wealth of the poorest 50 percent, according to the latest calculations. Inequality has moved up the agenda in recent years, with the head of the International Monetary Fund and the Pope among those warning of its corrosive effects, while resentment of elites has helped fuel an upsurge in populist politics.

Concern about the issue was highlighted again in the WEF’s own global risks report last week. “We see a lot of hand-wringing and clearly Trump’s victory and Brexit gives that new impetus this year - but there is a lack of concrete alternatives to business as usual,” said Max Lawson, Oxfam’s head of policy. “There are different ways of running capitalism that could be much, much more beneficial to the majority of people.” SUPER-CHARGED CAPITALISM Oxfam called in its report for a crackdown on tax dodging and a shift away from “super-charged” shareholder capitalism that pays out disproportionately to the rich. While many workers struggle with stagnating incomes, the wealth of the super-rich has increased by an average of 11 percent a year since 2009. Bill Gates, the world’s richest man who is a regular at Davos, has seen his fortune rise by 50 percent or $25 billion since announcing

outsized wealth can be recycled to help the poor, Oxfam believes such “big philanthropy” does not address the fundamental problem. “If billionaires choose to give their money away then that is a good thing. But inequality matters and you cannot have a system where billionaires are systematically paying lower rates of tax than their secretary or cleaner,” Lawson said. Oxfam bases its calculations on data from Swiss bank Credit Suisse and Forbes. People are urged to be cautious of tidal waves currently happened along the coast of Gianyar. Moreover, the big waves already knock down half the stall owned by Dewa Made Oka located on Cucukan Beach, Medahan village, on Sunday (Jan. 15). As a result of the incident, the 81-year old man also suffered losses worth millions of rupiahs. As seen on Cucukan Beach on Sunday afternoon, slowly and haltingly, Dewa Made Oka and his wife Ni Ketut Seronggo looked to clean up the debris of their stall that collapsed after being hit by big waves early Sunday morning. “I just knew this morning if the stall collapsed. Now, I have to move the remaining merchandise because with this condition of waves it is not possible for us to sell here,” he said. This couple explained that tidal waves have started last month, but culminated about two days ago. Until now, the high tides already knocked down his stall. “I’ve been selling here for years but this is the most vicious. It never comes into pieces like this. Now, I do not dare to sell here,” he added. Dewa Made Oka did not know where to find a place to sell because for decades he has been just relying on selling at the venue to meet his daily needs. Due to this incident, he estimated to lose millions of rupiahs. “Temporarily, we will bring home this merchandise while waiting for the waves to stop,” he said Aside from toppling his stall, a number of concrete revetments on the beach were also eroded by waves. Now, another stall next to the property of Dewa Made remains to survive. In the meantime, a number of travelers look to visit the beach alternately, but after seeing the wave conditions the travelers coming with a surf board seemed to dissuade their surfing desire. Head of the Gianyar disaster mitigation agency (BPBD), A.A. Oka Digjaya, said that his agency deployed a rapid response team to assist the evacuation process of the collapsed stall on Cucukan Beach, Medahan village. “The team has been deployed at the location. There were no casualties, but material losses only,” he said. He said that with such coastal wave conditions in Gianyar, travelers are called upon not to do any activities on the beach for a while. Besides, he will optimize the patrol of lifesaver and surveillance in four stations having been prepared. “We urge both travelers and local residents not to do any activity on the beach for a while in order to avoid unwanted incidents,” he asked. CAPE CANAVERAL — The International Space Station’s solar power grid got three more top-of-the-line batteries Friday during the second spacewalk in a week. Commander Shane Kimbrough and French crew member Thomas Pesquet plugged in three new lithium-ion batteries, adding to the three hooked up last week. Just like before, the station’s robotic handyman saved the spacewalkers considerable time — and risk — by removing the decade-old nickel-hydrogen batteries and positioning the new ones for wiring. The robot is named Dextre, short for dexterous, with 11-foot-long arms that were operated remotely by flight controllers in Houston. Kimbrough and Pesquet wrapped up the battery work in three hours. They spent nearly three more hours doing odd jobs before floating back inside. Pesquet, a rookie astronaut, became France’s first spacewalker in 15 years. He later posted what he called the “requisite space selfie” with a reflection of Earth in the helmet. “Unbelievable feeling to be your own space vehicle,” he said via Twitter. Said Kimbrough in a tweet: “So amazing to be a part of a huge team that made it all happen.” NASA describes the lithium-ion batteries as critical upgrades to the space station’s solar power system. Eighteen more need to be installed over the next two to three years, for a total of 24. The next batch will arrive late this year or early next. The batteries store electrical power generated by the massive solar wings and are used to run equipment when the 250-milehigh lab is on the nighttime side of Earth. Both the new and old batteries are the same size: about 3 feet long and wide, and 1 ½ feet tall, or about as big as half a refrigerator. But the new lithium-ion batteries can hold more charge and keep it longer, and so only half as many are needed — 24 instead of 48. Nine of these old batteries will be trashed at the beginning of February, burning up in the atmosphere along with the trashfilled Japanese cargo ship that delivered them last month. For the Jan. 6 spacewalk, Kimbrough paired up with the other American on board, Peggy Whitson, the world’s oldest and most experienced spacewoman. The lab is also home for three Russians. (ap)

CALIFORNIA - A SpaceX Falcon rocket blasted off from California on Saturday, returning the company to flight for the first time since a fiery launchpad explosion in September. The 230-foot (70-meter) rocket launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base at 9:54 a.m. PST (1754 GMT) to deliver 10 satellites into orbit for Iridium Communications Inc. “It’s a clean sweep - 10 for 10,” SpaceX launch commentator John Insprucker said after the satellites were released. SpaceX founder and entrepreneur Elon Musk’s ambitious flight plans had been grounded since the Sept. 1 explosion during fueling ahead of a pre-flight test in Florida. About 10 minutes after Saturday’s launch, the first stage of the rocket, which had separated from the rest of craft, successfully touched down on a platform in the Pacific Ocean, a feat previously accomplished by four other returning Falcon rockets. SpaceX intends to reuse its rockets to cut costs. “Rocket is stable,” Musk post-

SpaceX aims to launch 27 rockets in 2017, more than triple the eight flights the privately held firm managed in 2016, according to a report on Friday in the Wall Street Journal. In addition to its dozens of commercial customers, SpaceX is one of two companies hired by NASA to fly cargo to the International Space Station. To recover the damages, farmers must increase their capital by seeking bank loans. Moreover, many farmers left their land damaged for not being able to add the necessary capital. As seen on Friday (Jan. 13), vegetable and strawberry gardens have not been entirely cultivated by their owners. Some lands are still filled in with gravel, plastic trash and pieces of driftwood that washed away during last floods. Some plants remaining intact have not been fully maintained. Those plants are said to have been damaged. If further maintained, they will not yield adequate results. In the meantime, the cost to restore is much higher than the results obtained. Other than vegetables and strawberry garden, after the flood the drains at local village remain shallow and to be filled with piles of waste. One of the drains at Karma hamlet is covered up with sand and gravel. When it rains and water volume increases, such condition can trigger water to overflow and inundate people’s garden. Recently, residents got information that the drains will be cleared by relevant agency in Buleleng district. They hoped the handling can be done as soon as possible considering that rainfall stays high. Thus, if it rains, they will no longer worry about overflowing water that soak their vege-

table and strawberry plants having been relied upon for income. Headman of Pancasari, Wayan Darsana, when met at his office said that based on data collection made by hamlet chief the damage to crops due to recent floods is worth IDR 3.9 billion. Then, material damage to public facilities costs approximately IDR 200 million. To help farmers restore their garden or optimize surviving plants, so far there has been no assistance from relevant agencies in district government. So, if there is assistance to save the surviving crops, farmers can get results for capital in restoring their garden areas following the floods. “There has been no any assistance yet, but data collection only. If there is indeed, our residents very much expect the assistance, so that their surviving plants can still be maintained to bring in optimal results,” he stated. According to Darsana, related to the handling of narrow and shallow drains, so far there has been survey and measurement of the drains to be repaired. As the information he received, the total budget for repairing the drains amounts to IDR 1.7 billion. It will

be used to deepen two existing drains and make a new one, so that the volume of rainwater from forest border between Tabanan and Buleleng district can be channeled to the lake. The existing drains are located at Karma and Buyan hamlet, while the new one will be made at roadside of SingarajaBedugul, right in front of the Bali Handara. “The drains have been measured and the repair has been promised to begin this year. Hopefully, the floods hitting every rainy season can be resolved by the efforts of local government,” he added. As reminder, torrential rains and floods hit the area of Pancasari village, Sukasada some time ago. The floods happened due to shallow drains and some even have been closed, so that a large volume of water was unable to flow into the lake. The water from the forest border between Buleleng and Tabanan swiftly flows through four creeks so that overflowed and soaked the provincial road body with the height of more than one meter. People’s garden and residence were also flooded with mud. In addition, three classroom of elementary school at Dasong hamlet, Pancasari, were flooded to leave thick mud. (kmb38)

DENPASAR - Ahead of the Lunar New Year falling on January 28, the Indonesian Guides Association (HPI) is preparing Mandarin-speaking tourist guides. Lunar New Year is a holiday season in China. In the meantime, statistical data mention that hundreds of millions of Chinese people go out of mainland China on the Lunar New Year, but Bali just gets 1.3 million of Chinese travelers. To master a foreign language will take a minimum of a year so that it becomes late to meet the demand. “Previously, only residents with local identity card were qualifying for tourist guide that handle Chinese travelers in the region. Now, there have been policies that guides from outside the island are also allowed to handle due to urgent needs,” said Sang Putu Subaya, Chairman of the HPI on Friday (Jan. 13). In Bali, there are 1,300 Mandarin-speaking tour guides and expected to spread to various regions in Indonesia depending on Chinese travelers. Such number is considered sufficient to handle Chinese travelers. “The discourse that we shortage of tour guides are indeed partly correct. SHANGHAI - Two influential Chinese newspapers on Monday warned U.S. President-elect Donald Trump that Beijing will “take off the gloves” and Taiwan may be sacrificed if he continues to provoke Beijing over the self-ruled island once he sworn in on Jan. 20. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal published on Friday, Trump said the “One China” policy was up for negotiation. China’s foreign ministry said “One China” was the foundation of China-U.S. ties and was non-negotiable. BISHKEK - A Turkish cargo jet crashed near Kyrgyzstan’s Manas airport on Monday, killing at least 37 people, most of them residents of a village struck by the Boeing 747 as it tried to land in dense fog, Kyrgyz officials said. According to the airport administration, the plane was supposed to make a stopover at Manas, near the capital city Bishkek, on its way from Hong Kong to Istanbul. It crashed when trying to land in poor visibility at 7:31 a.m. (0131 GMT). The doomed plane ploughed for a few hundred metres (yards) through the village, shattering into pieces and damaging some 15 buildings. Initial estimates put the death toll from the crash at 37, said Kyrgyzstan’s emergencies ministry. Kyrgyz officials initially identified the Boeing 747-400 as belonging to Turkish Airlines, but Turkish cargo operator ACT Airlines said the jet was theirs. “Our TC-MCL signed plane, flying on Jan. 16 from Hong Kong to Bishkek, crashed on landing at Bishkek at the end of the runway for an unknown reason,” ACT Airlines said in an emailed statement. “More information will be disclosed concerning our four-person team when we get clear information.” (rtr)

WASHINGTON - CIA Director John Brennan on Sunday offered a stern parting message for Donald Trump days before the Republican U.S. president-elect takes office, cautioning him against loosening sanctions on Russia and warning him to watch what he says. Brennan rebuked Trump for comparing U.S. intelligence agencies to Nazi Germany in comments by the outgoing CIA chief that reflected the extraordinary friction between the incoming president and the 17 intelligence agencies he will begin to command once he takes office on Friday. In an interview with “Fox News Sunday,” Brennan questioned the message sent to the world if the president-elect broadcasts that he does not have confidence in the United States’ own intelligence agencies. “What I do find outrageous is equating the intelligence community with Nazi Germany. I do take great umbrage at that, and there is no basis for Mr. Trump to point fingers at the intelligence community for leaking information that was already available publicly,”

Brennan said. Brennan’s criticism followed a tumultuous week of fingerpointing between Trump and intelligence agency leaders over an unsubstantiated report that Russia had collected compromising information about Trump. The unverified dossier was summarized in a U.S. intelligence report presented to Trump and outgoing President Barack Obama this month that concluded Russia tried to sway the outcome of the Nov. 8 election in Trump’s favor by hacking and other means. The report did not make an assessment on whether Russia’s attempts affected the election’s outcome. Trump has accused the intelligence community of leaking the dossier information, which its leaders denied. They said it was their responsibility to inform the president-

elect that the allegations were being circulated. Trump has pledged to pursue more pro-Israeli policies and to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, all but enshrining the city as Israel’s capital despite international objections. Countries including key European and Arab states as well as the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council were in Paris for the conference, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected as “futile”. Neither the Israelis nor the Palestinians were represented. However, just five days before Trump is sworn in, the meeting was seen as a platform for countries to send a strong signal to the incoming American president that a two-state solution to the conflict could not be compromised on and that unilateral decisions could exacerbate tensions on the ground. Japan has historically been one of Indonesia’s biggest investors, but was dealt a blow in 2015 when President Joko Widodo’s government awarded China a high-speed train project linking Jakarta with the city of Bandung in West Java. Tensions around railway deals seemed to have eased on Sunday, when Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said after meeting Widodo in Bogor, south of Jakarta, that Japan will cooperate with Indonesia to build infrastructure in the railway and other sectors. The two leaders also discussed North Korea, with Abe saying its development of nuclear capability and missiles has reached “a new level of threat”. North Korea said last week it can test launch an intercontinental ballistic missile at any time from any location set by leader Kim Jong Un, adding the United States’ hostile policy was to blame for its arms development. On South China Sea, Abe said that Japan asserts the importance of the principle of upholding the law and solving a dispute peacefully. “The issue of South China Sea has drawn the attention of the international community and directly affects the peace in the region,” Abe said. Maritime security cooperation

is of utmost importance for fellow maritime nations, Japan and Indonesia, he said. “Japan will actively encourage cooperation in maritime security and the development of the remote islands in Indonesia.” China claims almost the entire South China Sea, through which about $5 trillion worth of trade passes each year. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims to parts of the sea. While Indonesia is not part of the dispute over claims in the South China Sea, it objects to China’s claim to waters around the Natuna Islands. RAILWAY WARS

The minister told Reuters in October that the government had invited Japan to work on the Jakarta-Surabaya project, which is aimed at slashing journey times between the capital and the East Java city by more than half to around five hours. Japan and Indonesia also plan to develop the Masela gas block in Indonesia’s Maluku Province and Patimban port in West Java, Widodo said on Sunday. On other regional issues, Abe said North Korea’s kidnapping of Japanese citizens is a very important challenge for his administration to resolve. JAKARTA - Chairman of Commission III of the House of Representatives Bambang Soesatyo has urged President Joko Widodo to strengthen cyber units of the Police, State Intelligence Agency (BIN), and Ministry of Defense to anticipate cyber attacks. “In addition to the establishment of the National Cyber Agency, the government should improve cyber units of the Police, BIN, and Ministry of Defense to anticipate cyber attacks amid the growing number of assaults on accounts over the past few years,” Soesatyo stated here on Monday. The lawmaker pointed out that the attacks had the potential to disrupt defense and national security as well as public order. In response to the cyber attacks, Indonesia has built cyber units in the Police, BIN, and Defense Ministry. “The cyber units need to be improved due to the growing threat of cyber attacks,” he remarked. The Houses Commission I on Communications and Information had earlier lent support to the speedy establishment of the National Cyber Agency to curb hoax news circulating among the public. “I think it is a good thing if it is established soon to reduce or even eliminate the spread of hoax (information),” Commission I Chairman Abdul Kharis Almasyhari stated here. He noted that the establishment of a cyber agency is expected to prevent the people from being misled by hoax news, as it could lead to slander. The Commission I chairman of the House of Representatives pointed out that pieces of information presented to the public should be valid and accurate, so that they do not create slander. “I think hoax news should not be circulated regardless of how small it is, as it would mislead the people,” he emphasized. It has been under discussion for a relatively long time but has yet to be established by the government, and Commission I needs to currently take up the matter with the concerned authorities. The commission is willing to again lend a ear to the governments inputs after it expressed willingness to form it in 2017. “We will later hear the governments explanations regarding its plan to set up the National Cyber Agency,” he revealed.(ant)

Army to develop 500 ha rice fields in Nabire, Papua JAYAPURA - The Indonesian military plans to develop rice fields in the remote district of Nabire in the countrys eastern province of Papua this year. The chief of the District Military Command 1705/Paniai in Papua, Lt. Col. Jerry Harapan Tua Simatupang, confirmed here on Sunday that the project was a cooperation project between TNI (the military) and the ministry of agriculture to increase food self-sufficiency especially in Papua. He said several military officials from the command along with Trubus farmers group chief and a number of farmers inspected the area to be used for the project last week. “The area spreads in Wanggar Sari village (80 hectares), Wiraska (57 ha), Wami (60 ha), Waroki (25 ha) and Maiday (108 ha),” he explained. Simatupang said the inspection was needed to see possible hurdles that might be met during development process including irrigation issue. “I will deploy all members of the community development unit to mentor the farmers with regard to achieving a maximum harvest,” he said.(ant)

LONDON - Williams are close to agreeing a deal that would see their Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas replace retired Formula One world champion Nico Rosberg at Mercedes, deputy principal Claire Williams said on Sunday. Speaking on stage at the Autosport International Show in Birmingham, Williams indicated that only small details needed to be resolved. “It now is exactly that,” she said when asked whether it was a question of ‘crossing the Ts and dotting the Is’ in the agreement. Rosberg announced his retirement in early December, five days after winning his first title at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. His decision left champions Mercedes, the sport’s dominant team, in a difficult position with all the other top drivers signed up to rival outfits.

Bottas was an obvious choice for his experience and existing contacts, with Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff previously a shareholder in Williams and also involved from early on in Bottas’s management. Former champions Williams also use Mercedes engines. However that team also needs an experienced driver to partner 18-year-old Canadian rookie Lance Stroll. LIVERPOOL — Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp expressed his frustration on Sunday that FIFA has failed to make a swift decision about the eligibility of defender Joel Matip. Matip withdrew himself from consideration for future selection for Cameroon’s national team in September 2015, but his country tried to call him up for the African Nations Cup that started this month. Although Cameroon finalized its squad for the tournament more than a week ago, without Matip in it, Liverpool says the Cameroon Football Federation has failed to confirm he can play for the club during the African Nations Cup.
