The force of “Gravity” may be about to exert itself on Hollywood’s awards season. When Academy Award nominations are announced Thursday morning from Beverly Hills, California, Alfonso Cuaron’s 3-D space adventure will likely rival “12 Years a Slave” and “American Hustle” in a close contest for most-nominated film. Though much of the season has been a see-saw between Steve McQueen’s heavy historical epic and David O. Russell’s lighter Abscam melodrama, “Gravity” should emerge Thursday as an equally strong Oscar contender. All three are locks for a best picture nomination. And while “Gravity,” with a cast of just a few, won’t reap the acting nods that the acclaimed ensembles of “American Hustle” and “12 Years a Slave” will, it holds an edge in technical categories. Cuaron’s box-office hit ($670 million worldwide) has been hailed for its innovative visual effects, which are sure to be honored by the academy. The Golden Globes are typically a weak forecaster to the Oscars, but last Sunday’s ceremony reflected consensus by naming “American Hustle” best comedy and “12 Years a Slave” best drama. Hollywood’s guilds, whose members largely make up the academy, have in their awards nominations also voiced strong support for Paul Greengrass’ Somali pirate docudrama “Captain Phillips,” Martin Scorsese’s finance fiasco “The Wolf of Wall Street” and Alexander Payne’s black-and-white road trip “Nebraska.” But an added bit of intrigue, as has been the case in recent years, is how many bestpicture nominees there will be. It could be anywhere between five and 10. Films somewhere on the bubble are “Dallas Buyers Club,” ‘’Her,” ‘’Saving Mr. Banks,”
‘’Philomena” and “Inside Llewyn Davis.” Though the Coen brothers’ “Inside Llewyn Davis” was once viewed as a near certainty, the early 1960s folk tale was overlooked by the screen actors, producers, writers and directors guilds, seemingly dooming its chances. The most-watched category may be best actor. This year’s candidates are especially strong, including Matthew McConaughey (“Dallas Buyers Club”), Chiwetel Ejiofor (“12 Years a Slave”), Tom Hanks (“Captain Phillips”), Bruce Dern (“Nebraska”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Wolf of Wall Street”) and Robert Redford (“All Is Lost”). That’s six names for five spots, and many believe Redford (who has never won an acting Oscar) will be the odd man out after the Screen Actors Guild snubbed him. Also potentially on the outside are Christian Bale (“American Hustle”), Forest Whitaker (“Lee Daniels’The Butler”) and Oscar Isaac (“Inside Llewyn Davis”). The best actress category, too, may see a beloved veteran — Meryl Streep for “August: Osage County” — have difficulty making it in. in prognostications. Others expected to receive nods are Cate Blanchett (“Blue Jasmine”), Sandra Bullock (“Gravity”), Judi Dench (“Philomena”) and Emma Thompson (“Saving Mr. Banks”). Other questions linger, too. Will James Gandolfini be posthumously nominated for his supporting performance in the romantic comedy “Enough Said”? Can James Franco sneak in for his grotesque extremes in “Spring Breakers”? Will we actually say “Oscar-nominee ‘Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa’’’? (It has a legitimate shot in the makeup category.) The answers of a long and winding awards season will come Thursday morning.
CW to air miniseries about search for Holy Grail

PASADENA, California — The CW network says it has acquired a miniseries about the search for the Holy Grail. The cast of the four-hour project, “Labyrinth,” includes former “Downton Abbey” star Jessica Brown-Findlay, along with Vanessa Kirby, Sebastian Stan and John Hurt. The miniseries centers on a 13th-century teenager and a modern woman, and their shared quest for the grail, the cup said to have been used by Jesus Christ. “Labyrinth” is adapted from Kate Mosse’s best-selling novel of the same name. An air date wasn’t announced for the drama, which has appeared in Britain and elsewhere. The network also said Wednesday it’s adding two reality series to its schedule later this year: “Barber Battle,” a competition series hosted by Cedric The Entertainer, and “Penn & Teller: Fool Us,” in which aspiring magicians perform their best tricks for the comedy duo. Airdates for the reality shows were not announced.

Strong wind hit Silangjana village, Sukasada subdistrict and surrounding areas. A house owned by Wayan Lingga, Dajan Margi hamlet, Silangjana village, came off as hit by strong wind. Such incident occurred on Tuesday night (Jan 14). Luckily, no fatalities were reported in the incident. An irrigation channel at Subak Gerubugan, Demulih village, Susut, Bangli, collapsed as hit by heavy rains. Aside from causing the subak irrigation channel to collapse, the avalanche materials of the revetment also stockpiled most areas of watershed beneath. As the impact, dozens of hectares of paddy fields owned by local farmers having been ready to bear fruit was ultimately threatened by harvest failure. The collapse along some 20 meters was alleged to be not strong enough to hold rainwater coming through into the ground. Within the past few weeks, heavy rains continued to flush Bangli and surrounding areas. Avalanche materials of the revetment stockpiling some parts of the water channel had made the water flow gradually diminished. Local farmers were screaming because the abundant harvests
expected was threatened to vanish. One of the local farmers, Ketut Gablogan, said the irrigation channel at his subak area was previously smooth. But since the collapse of revetment, the irrigation water leading to his rice field continuously dwindled. “Much water in the upstream area cannot entirely flow to downstream area or almost runs out due to the collapse,” he said. Similar condition was conveyed
by hamlet chief of Demulih, Wayan Rumia. He said such incident had caused a total of 21 hectares of farmland in his territory got water trouble. “Obviously, it has not got any water,” he added. Responding to the collapse of the irrigation channel, local farmers were looking forward to receiving the attention from relevant agencies to take immediate repair to the irrigation channel so their fields could be cultivated again. Indecision of the Gianyar Electoral Commission in disciplining a number of violations on billboard installation ultimately led to a calamity. A billboard owned by a regional representative candidate (DPD RI) located at Bukit hamlet, Tampaksiring, Gianyar, claimed a victim on Wednesday afternoon (Jan 15) around 4:00 p.m. A family, I Gusti Kompyang Raka, 45, from the Penginyaan village, Ubud, along with his wife, Jro Putu Nistri, 42, and his 6-year old son Gusti Ketut Rai, was toppled over by the billboard. The family was eventually hospitalized in Sanjiwani Hospital, Gianyar. In the incident of collapsed billboard owned by the legislative candidate with the picture of Dewa Made Suamba Negara, Jro Putu Nistri was knocked unconscious and suffered a number of blisters on her feet. Her son, Gusti Ketut Rai, suffered injuries on the head and had to be stitched. While Gusti Kompyang Raka
injured in the hand and blister on foot and got the help of oxygen in the emergency room of Sanjiwani Hospital, Gianyar. On the way, the billboard installed in the west side of the road toppled over them when riding a motorcycle. “I fall unconscious at the time of incident,” said the victim’s wife. When toppled over by the billboard, condition of the family was very poor. The victim was taken to Tampaksiring community health center II. However, since the condition was severe enough, he was then rushed to Sanjiwani Hospital. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

PARIS — The fashion pack says “Bonjour, Paris!” as the catwalk shows move on from Milan and onto the final dash to the finish line of fall-winter 2014 menswear collections. Here are some top moments and tidbits from Wednesday’s dressy displays. WILL SMITH GOES TO PARIS
The presence of “Men in Black” star Will Smith at Valentino ensured that the show was the snapshot highlight of the first day of Paris menswear. The smiling 45-year-old actor told The Associated Press inside the opulent 19th-century mansion venue that there’s nowhere he’d rather be than the City of Light. “I’ve been taking a few months travelling to places like Buenos Aires. But there’s something distinct about Paris, when you walk around. This is exactly where I want to be right now,” he said, dressed head to toe in Valentino, with some enviable pajama-style pants and a draped scarf. “And it’s great to be at the show. Valentino for me, well, it’s classical perfection.”

The third Paris menswear show for Valentino saw designers Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri (who sported a new, demure short hairstyle) channel ethnic patchwork. “Intarsia,” or mosaic patterns, was how the program notes described the Aztec-like motifs that decorated peacoats, shearling coats and hunting jackets. Woolen coats embroidered like rugs, and tribal wings on shoulders, mirrored the ethnic feel evoked by the myriad carpets that lined the catwalk floor. The show was soft. From rounded shoulders, to pajamas suits and a harmonious blend of camel, gray, indigo blue on felt, every element
gave the collection a snug feel. A long thick striped coat in black, gray and brown had a soft, sumptuous tone. It put the designers in good stead for the launch of their first flagship menswear boutique in Paris on the Rue Saint Honore— designed by architect David Chipperfield — which was inaugurated just after the show. Was it a dig at Uncle Sam? Raf Simons this season collaborated with American artist Sterling Ruby to produce a wacky show with Mickey Mouse shoes, exaggeratedly skinny legs and oversized 1-meter (3-foot) bags set against a backdrop of the U.S. flag. But the leitmotif, a print of the hands and jagged nails of a wicked witch, made the show feel like evil was lurking just beyond the surface. Colorful fabric appliques and diagonal stripes made sure that the focal point of the ensembles
was on the surface and that the the oversize gray marl jackets or black sweaters beneath were subservient. The splashed bleach bursts of color also gave this imaginative show an injection of punk. ECCENTRIC INVITATIONS
In the old-fashioned postwar days of Monsieur Dior, fashion show invitations were sacred templates, only to be written upon by professional calligraphers. How times have changed! The once-classical invite has over the years been given a dramatic overhaul. In a bid to attract attention for their collections, houses are resorting more and more to inventive gimmicks. The winner of the most eccentric invitation for Wednesday’s shows was the design house 22/4, who lured in guests with a blurred invitation card that could only be read with magic eye goggles (included, fortunately, in the envelope.) Raf Simons’ was a close second with a huge poster that was left blank apart from his name. With Paris menswear week ballooning with some 50 official shows and countless off-calendar collections, it’s little wonder that
houses are trying hard to separate themselves from the pack. CARVEN DESIGNER’S CATWALK DEBUT
A billiard room, the place of the dapper yet playful gentleman, was the set for designer Guillaume Henry’s strong debut catwalk show for Carven. Two old school wooden game tables, floodlit in film noir lighting, served as the obstacles around which some 36 often-retro looks filed by. Many of garments came in what the program notes call the “faded shades of old photos,” coal, slate gray, black and offwhite. And above-the-ankle tapered pants, together with ‘60s large check tweed and highbuttoned woolen jackets with narrow shoulders and excessive collars added to the vintage mood. But playfulness, more than nostalgia, ended up dominating the show. Graffiti prints, based on photographer Brassai, jazzed up otherwise classical button-up shirts, and even came as flashes on two ensembles worn — in a cheeky, and on-trend touch — by female models.

Erratic weather causes a lot of people to fall sick,” he said. Ritual on the full moon of the seventh month related to the ngenjut memedi procession was also associated with
the temple ritual in the Rambut Petung Temple and in the shrine of Ida Rambut Sedana with the means of nasi segehan. After cremation, each household installed a bamboo shrine (sanggah cucuk) on the right side of entrance gate. Memedi or magical negative power cremated was then assigned on the bamboo shrine. For a month, local residents put offerings and other necessity on the bamboo shrine. A month later in the eighth month was resumed with ngusaba ritual in the Dalem Temple. Meanwhile, the bamboo shrine and platform of the memedi were eliminated in the cemetery. It was the peak of neutralizing bhutakala en masse at Pasedahan village. (013)

Drug case with the suspect Verchere Thierry Claude Josep, 47, from France, has been investigated by Denpasar Police Narcotics Detective. Later, it was known if the suspect seemed to keep a drug belonging to cocaine type. He acknowledged such illicit goods were given by his friend from Iran. Chief of Denpasar Police, Djoko Hariutomo, accompanied by Chief of Narcotics Detective, Agus Tri Waluyo, said on Wednesday (Jan 15) that so far the suspect admitted to be a user. Rabies cases at Umajero
Dozens of dogs vaccinated

Following the positive case of rabies at Umajero village, Busungbiu subdistrict, the Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency did not keep silent. Dozens of dogs owned by local residents were injected with anti-rabies vaccine (VAR), Wednesday (Jan 15). The agency also reminded residents of limiting the pet dog raised to avoid transmission of rabies. The vaccination last Wednesday was chaired in person by the Head of Animal Health, Wayan Susila, with a number of field extension workers. On arriving at Umajero, the officers immediately vaccinated the residents’ dog. They came into people’s homes. Unfortunately, most people’s homes were left empty because the owners worked in the plantation. Many dogs were also allowed to stray and not tied. As a result, the officers only managed to vaccine a total of 20 dogs owned by residents, while eight wild dogs were eliminated because their owner was unclear. Elimination to the eight stray dogs was made by using blowpipe and special poison. Dogs that successfully targeted by the officers died slowly. After being declared dead, the officers also took a sample of the dog’s head to be studied at the Center for Veterinary at the Bali Livestock Agency. When asked for his confirmation after the vaccination, the Division Head of Animal Health of the Buleleng Livestock Agency, Wayan Susila, said the effort was the follow-up of the positive rabies case at Umajero village. Since the case emerged the Buleleng Livestock Agency had localized dogs at Umajero and surrounding areas. Besides, the traffic of dog coming into and out of Umajero was also closed for a while. After that effort, the vaccination was intensified to prevent in order the dogs owned by residents would not be contracted by rabies. In addition, wild dogs without clear owner were eliminated as suspected to contract disease and potentially transmitted rabies. “Yes, it is our continued effort to prevent the emergence of another positive case of rabies at this village,” he said. On the other hand, Susila said that other efforts made to prevent the emergence of rabies cases at Umajero was prohibiting residents from raising dogs more than two heads. When people were found to raise more than two dogs, the Buleleng Livestock Agency would eliminate the dog. This preventive effort had been informed to village authorities and received the support from residents to jointly take care of dogs properly for the sake of safety. “We estimate the dog population at Umajero village is more than 200 dogs. From now on, we will begin to limit. Hopefully, people can comply with our suggestion. Otherwise, there will be elimination effort against the dog whose owner was unclearly known,” he explained. As planned, the vaccination and elimination of dogs at Umajero would continue on Thursday (Jan 16). This dog vaccination was intended to accomplish all dogs that had not been reached in the previous vaccination. The agency urged residents to tie their dog, so when the officers arrived they could directly vaccinate the dogs. Previously, a resident of Umajero was stated to have been infected by rabies. The resident was treated in Sanglah Hospital and eventually died. The resident previously bitten by dog was declared to be positive to rabies. Responding to the emergence of the case, the Buleleng Livestock Agency took steps to prevent and localize the dog population at Umajero to avoid contracting with rabies. (mud)

The increasingly higher rainfall in Baturiti area, Tabanan, in recent days caused a number of vegetable growers to suffer a loss. Selling price of certain vegetables in the market has fallen dramatically. One of the organic vegetable growers at Kembang Merta hamlet, Wayan Balik Ardita, said the operating cost of growing vegetables in rainy season was usually higher than in dry season. It happened because every farmer, particularly the vegetable farmers of certain commodities, should prepare double budget to purchase plastic protector for keeping vegetable plants so as not to be exposed to rain, where such additional costs could reach hundreds of thousands of rupiahs per single line. Nevertheless, the effort did not fully guarantee the farmers’ production to be the same as in normal season. Decline in production stayed to occur, even it reached 50 percent of the usual one because the lack of sunlight caused the plant growth less optimally. “Automatically, the current harvest makes the price of vegetable down. Actually, in rainy season, the treatment or maintenance of the plant requires extra attention. Even, there are also additional costs to be borne,” he said. He said the decreasing price of
vegetables happened to carrots, kale, lettuce, beets and parsley where these kinds of commodity were some of 10 types of vegetables he developed on the 500 square meters of land. He said the current price of kale at the farmer level was IDR 8,000 per kg, decreased from IDR 10,000 per kg previously. Similarly, the price of salad was also down to IDR 20,000 per kg from IDR 25,000 per kg previously. “Fortunately, the declining price of vegetable does not cause to suffer a great loss because of the ten vegetables I cultivate, some still have expensive price, though some others are cheap. Farmers should also keen to see the situation and not cultivate one type of vegetable only,” he said. Mustika, another horticultural farmer, also said that most vegetables at the farmer level currently experienced a decline in price. He admitted such condition did not benefit farmers considering when they were planting about 4-3 months ago, the production costs to be borne was fairly large because of having entered the rainy season. However, when getting
into the harvest time, the price even slumped. “The most expensive price of vegetable at the moment only
includes tomatoes, cabbage and peppers that are indeed easily perishing when exposed to rain. Meanwhile, the price of other types of vegetable is even down because due to increasing production in this harvest season,” he said. Though facing many insistent

SEOUL - North Korea has demanded that South Korea and the United States halt annual military drills due in February and March, saying they were a direct provocation, a statement that suggested a re-run of a sharp escalation in tension last year. In 2013, North Korea said it would retaliate against any hostile moves by striking at the United States, Japan and South Korea, triggering a military buildup on the Korean peninsula and months of fiery rhetoric. The reclusive North has regularly denounced annual drills such as “Key Resolve” and “Ulchi-Freedom-Guardian” staged by South Korea and United States as a prelude to invasion. “We sternly warn the U.S. and the South Korean authorities to stop the dangerous military exercises which may push the situation on the peninsula and the north-south ties to a catastrophe,” the North’s KCNA state news quoted a body in charge of efforts to promote Korean unification as saying. Similar bellicose rhetoric from the North set South Korea, the United States and Japan on edge a year ago. As a result, Washington flew Stealth bomber missions over South Korea and strengthened its military presence in the South, where nearly 30,000 U.S. troops are based. South Korea said the drills were going ahead as planned and despite the threat, North Korea’s military has showed no sign of unusual activities. “If North Korea actually commits military aggression at the excuse of what is a normal exercise we conduct as preparation for emergency, our military will mercilessly and decisively punish them,” Defence Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said. North and South Korea remain technically at war after their 1950-53 civil conflict ended in a truce, not a treaty. China, North Korea’s only remaining real ally and which has been alarmed by what it sees as provocations by both sides, called for restraint. “All sides have a responsibility to maintain peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and this accords with all sides’ interests,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a daily news briefing. “The overall situation on the Korean peninsula at present is quite fragile. BANGKOK - Throngs of whistle-blowing protesters were on the march again in the Thai capital Thursday, surrounding several government offices they had not previously interfered with to keep up pressure on the prime minister to resign and call off next month’s election. The marches appeared to be a way to maintain momentum amid a decline in the number of protesters who have blocked key intersections in Bangkok for four days now in an attempt to shut down the government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. Their numbers could swell again this weekend. Yingluck’s opponents, largely from the south and urban middle and upper classes, claim she is carrying on the practices of her billionaire brother by using the family fortune and state funds to influence voters and cement her grip on power. But she has widespread support among Thailand’s poor majority in the countryside because of the populist policies carried out by her brother, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who lives in selfimposed exile to avoid being imprisoned on a corruption conviction. On Wednesday evening, protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban urged followers to march on the offices of the Revenue Department. Thursday morning, a column of flag-waving, chanting protesters marched off to surround three branches of the Revenue Department, asking workers inside to leave - and many did. Last month, protesters had surrounded the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Transport Ministry and other government agencies, prompting some to move to temporary
premises or allow employees to work from home. Other groups of demonstrators targeted the Public Health Ministry and at the Public Works Department. One group led by a Buddhist monk claimed to be headed to the office of the Department of Special Investigation, Thailand’s FBI. GENEVA \ Conflicts like the war in Syria and getting the world economy back on track will be the focus of next week’s annual gathering of world leaders and power brokers in the Swiss ski resort of Davos. Organizers of the World Economic Forum said Wednesday that hundreds of public figures are expected to attend, including the leaders of Iran, Israel, Japan and Britain. This year’s event will coincide with the start of the first face-to-face negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition, which will also take place in Switzerland, in the cities of Montreux and Geneva. But the forum’s organizers said they do not yet know how many of the ministers who will be at those talks might then join the event in Davos. The forum’s founder, Klaus Schwab, told reporters Wednesday at the organization’s lavish headquarters overlooking Lake Geneva that the event seeks to “push the reset button” on the world’s crisis mode.
He expects there to be “cautious optimism” among the attendees, but also realistic expectations about what could be achieved. He said the temple priest Mangku Gede Linggih who found the temple site has passed away. As the successor, he was replaced by his wife Jro Mangku Lingsir Mangku Sumpang living in Gilimanuk. Meanwhile, Winada added that every full moon, there were always devotees coming from all over Bali and even from Java. They all came to do purificatory rite directly on the beach. But at high tides, the temple attendant had taken holy water for purificatory rite from the three springs and kept it in the temple area. BRUSSELS-The European Commission is making it easier for smalland medium-sized companies to get state-backed financing, an effort to get credit flowing again and help the economic recovery. The Commission, the 28-nation bloc’s executive arm, said Wednesday its guidelines for state aid rules will be eased from July 1 by allowing governments to further team up with banks. Funding for many European small- and medium-sized companies dried up in the wake of the financial crisis as banks focused on replenishing their coffers and worried about the economic outlook. The Commission says that between 10 and 60 percent of a state-backed loan would have to come from a private sector lender to make sure such aid attracts, rather than replaces, private funding.
Hindus in Bali commemorate a festivity of Tumpek Kandang. The festivity falling every Saniscara (Saturday) Pon Wuku Uye actually has a meaning to develop compassion for all the God’s creatures, especially animals. Through the Tumpek Kandang ritual, people are expected to develop the livestock sector to strengthen the economic foundations. Then, how should devotees interpret the Tumpek Kandang?
In the Sunarigama palm-leaf manuscript is stated that on Saniscara Pon Uye pinaka prakertining sarwa sato. In other words, the day should be made the milestone for preserving all kinds of animals. Celebration of the Tumpek Kandang ritual is not meant to worship the animals. It is a religious festival dedicated to worship Lord Shiva Pasupati, a manifestation of God who has created the animals. On Tumpek Kandang, animals especially cattle are made some celebratory oblations. Essentially, devotees worship the Lord Shiva Pasupati as manifestation of God serving as the king of all the living things. In the ritual procession, devotees invoke blessing in order their cattle could be bestowed with prime healthy and
safety. However, philosophically the Tumpek Kandang celebration implies that people should develop compassion for all the living creatures. In the economic context, the procession mandates that agricultural sector in the broader sense (livestock) can be developed to strengthen the economic foundations of society. Sarasamusccaya says that Ayuwa tan masih ring sarwa prani, apan prani ngaran prana, which means not to ignore any care to animals because they are a force of nature. In other words, people must develop compassion for all beings. Especially on Tumpek Kandang, devotees worship God in His manifestation as Lord Shiva Pasupati in order the cattle could be blessed with welfare. Similarly, the prayers are also recited for other livestock such as pigs, goats, chickens and ducks. Even, a pig for the Hindu community in Bali is often used as a sort of saving or piggy bank. When people hold celebrations, the pigs are slaughter or in emergency case they can be sold to meet the needs. As the animals destined for human food, chickens, ducks, pigs and so forth are often used as a protein source to support the human life. To that end, those animals should be constantly developed.
However, other specific animals, especially those belonged to the endangered species, should be preserved. For example, they are green turtles, Bali starlings, deers, monkeys and so forth. These rare animals must be maintained so as not to become extinct. To keep the endangered species from extinction, Balinese people associate them with mythology. For
instance, the animals are regarded as the property (duwe) of God such as the white cow, ape, fruit bats, snake and so on. Through the mythology, devotees are actually encouraged to conserve the wildlife by preserving them based on religious concepts. Mythology seems much more powerful than a call or an appeal to preserve the endangered species. In the Hindu concept, no single
thing is without the power of God. Inside them lie the jivatman or the soul. On that account, the concept of developing compassion for all the God’s creatures should be continued. Through the celebration Tumpek Kandang, people should develop them well for the benefit of life and preserve the endangered species in order not to become extinct. (kmb)

JERUSALEM - Israel’s prime minister has increased the amount of occupied territory he wants to keep after any peace deal with the Palestinians, state media reported on Thursday, a move that could complicate U.S.-backed efforts to reach an accord. Benjamin Netanyahu’s spokesman declined to comment on the report he had added a bloc of Israeli-settled land near the Palestinian governmental seat in the occupied West Bank to a list of enclaves Israel intends to retain. That would leave 13 percent of the West Bank in Israeli hands, Israel’s Army Radio said, a prospect likely to dismay Palestinians who want the area for a future state. There was no immediate comment from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Netanyahu had also departed from past peace blueprints that had envisaged an equal trade of land inside Israel for any West Bank areas it retained, the radio station said. A reshuffle could increase tensions in Letta’s left-right coalition, which has struggled to enact reforms to rescue Italy’s economy, the third largest in the euro zone and weighed down by the bloc’s second largest public debt after Greece. But some supporters of a reshuffle say it may be the best way to disarm criticism of the government’s record from Matteo Renzi, the new leader of Letta’s center-left Democratic Party (PD) by giving him a bigger stake in the coalition’s success. The PD is the largest party in the coalition, which also includes center-right parties. Renzi is not in the government. Erwiana Sulistyaningsih, 22, was admitted to hospital in a critical condition in Sragen, on the main Indonesian island of Java, last week after returning home, claiming she had suffered months of abuse in Hong Kong. The case has renewed concern about the treatment of domestic helpers in the former British colony following recent criticism by rights groups. Her condition is now improving and medics hope her injuries will be healed in two weeks, Dita Indah Sari, spokeswoman for the Indonesian minister of manpower and transmigration, said. Sari, who visited her in hospital with other officials, said that the maid had suffered “psychological trauma” due to the abuse, which left her with “pus-filled wounds” on her hands and legs, and unable to walk. Sulistyaningsih “told us that she was hit in the head, and two of her front teeth were broken after she was punched in the head. She also had a black eye,” the spokeswoman said. She was not given a day off and was only allowed to call her family once for four minutes, and her employer still owes her five million rupiah ($420), Sari added. Reports in Hong Kong have said Sulistyaningsih could have been abused for up to eight months during her employment with a local family after arriving in May last year. Hong Kong police said Tuesday they had launched a criminal investigation after migrant worker groups expressed anger at earlier reports that authorities were not pursuing the case. Sari said Sulistyaningsih planned to return to the former British colony when she had recovered to help in the probe against her employer’s “simply unacceptable” behaviour. “When she is healthy again, we will accompany her to Hong Kong to lodge a formal report with Hong Kong authorities so they can take action against her employer,” she said. “We are optimistic that the Hong Kong authorities will take firm action against the employer,” she said, adding that Indonesian authorities were not considering putting a stop to Indonesian maids working in the semi-autonomous southern Chinese city. Federer canters into third round by giving Kavcic lesson

MELBOURNE - Roger Federer spent as little time as he needed and gave Blaz Kavcic a tennis lesson in recording a 6-2 6-1 7-6 victory to advance to the third round of the Australian Open on Thursday. Playing under the closed roof of Hisense Arena due to the extreme heat that had earlier suspended play on the uncovered courts, Federer raced through the first set in 26 minutes with a strong service game and by belting 17 winners. Federer’s sixth ranking - courtesy of a sub-par 2013 - had given the impression of a 32-year-old man whose skills may be diminishing as he enters the twilight of his illustrious career. That presumption was emphatically rejected when Kavcic held two break points in the fourth game of the second set and had Federer scrambling back and forth in a 23-shot rally only for the Swiss to force a forehand error. The hard-hitting world number 99 simply stood hands on hips slowly shaking his head as if pondering what to do next. The Slovenian did manage to break on the next point and thrust his arms skyward in mock triumph, though that only served to fire up Federer who won 13 of the next 16 points to clinch the set in 28 minutes. The third set was a little closer with Kavcic’s serve improving markedly but he could not halt the inevitable as Federer ended the 107-minute lesson when he clinched the tie-break 7-4. Federer will now meet either 31st seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco or Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili in the third round.

LONDON - Bill Shankly once famously said football was more important than life and death and Norwich City’s chief executive appears to concur with the former Liverpool manager’s philosophy. With Norwich fighting to stay in the Premier League, David McNally was asked during a radio interview what relegation would mean for the club. “The brief is to keep out of the bottom three and that is what we are doing. We will not contemplate relegation, in a sporting sense it is worse than death,” McNally said. “I would prefer death rather than
relegation. There is nothing more important than keeping this football club in the Premier League. We are all focused on that.” Pressure has inevitably increased on manager Chris Hughton with Norwich two points clear of the bottom three in a congested bottom half of the table after no wins from six league games. LONDON - Bill Shankly once famously said football was more important than life and death and Norwich City’s chief executive appears to concur with the former Liverpool manager’s philosophy. With Norwich fighting to stay in the Premier League, David McNally was asked during a radio interview what relegation would mean for the club. “The brief is to keep out of the bottom three and that is what we are doing. We will not contemplate relegation, in a sporting sense it is worse than death,” McNally said. “I would prefer death rather than
relegation. There is nothing more important than keeping this football club in the Premier League. Federer canters into third round by giving Kavcic lesson

MELBOURNE - Roger Federer spent as little time as he needed and gave Blaz Kavcic a tennis lesson in recording a 6-2 6-1 7-6 victory to advance to the third round of the Australian Open on Thursday. Playing under the closed roof of Hisense Arena due to the extreme heat that had earlier suspended play on the uncovered courts, Federer raced through the first set in 26 minutes with a strong service game and by belting 17 winners. Federer’s sixth ranking - courtesy of a sub-par 2013 - had given the impression of a 32-year-old man whose skills may be diminishing as he enters the twilight of his illustrious career. That presumption was emphatically rejected when Kavcic held two break points in the fourth game of the second set and had Federer scrambling back and forth in a 23-shot rally only for the Swiss to force a forehand error. The hard-hitting world number 99 simply stood hands on hips slowly shaking his head as if pondering what to do next. The Slovenian did manage to break on the next point and thrust his arms skyward in mock triumph, though that only served to fire up Federer who won 13 of the next 16 points to clinch the set in 28 minutes. The third set was a little closer with Kavcic’s serve improving markedly but he could not halt the inevitable as Federer ended the 107-minute lesson when he clinched the tie-break 7-4. Federer will now meet either 31st seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco or Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili in the third round.

Benjamin Netanyahu’s spokesman declined to comment on the report he had added a bloc of Israeli-settled land near the Palestinian governmental seat in the occupied West Bank to a list of enclaves Israel intends to retain. That would leave 13 percent of the West Bank in Israeli hands, Israel’s Army Radio said, a prospect likely to dismay Palestinians who want the area for a future state. There was no immediate comment from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Netanyahu had also departed from past peace blueprints that had envisaged an equal trade of land inside Israel for any West Bank areas it retained, the radio station said. Instead, Netanyahu has offered to buy some of the settlement land from the Palestinians, but they had rejected such a deal, it added. A reshuffle could increase tensions in Letta’s left-right coalition, which has struggled to enact reforms to rescue Italy’s economy, the third largest in the euro zone and weighed down by the bloc’s second largest public debt after Greece. But some supporters of a reshuffle say it may be the best way to disarm criticism of the government’s record from Matteo Renzi, the new leader of Letta’s center-left Democratic Party (PD) by giving him a bigger stake in the coalition’s success. The PD is the largest party in the coalition, which also includes center-right parties. Renzi is not in the government. JAKARTA - A maid allegedly tortured in Hong Kong hopes to return to the city to help in the investigation against her employer, an official said Wednesday, as more details of her alleged mistreatment emerged. Erwiana Sulistyaningsih, 22, was admitted to hospital in a critical condition in Sragen, on the main Indonesian island of Java, last week after returning home, claiming she had suffered months of abuse in Hong Kong. The case has renewed concern about the treatment of domestic helpers in the former British colony following recent criticism by rights groups. Her condition is now improving and medics hope her injuries will be healed in two weeks, Dita Indah Sari, spokeswoman for the Indonesian minister of manpower and transmigration, said. Sari, who visited her in hospital with other officials, said that the maid had suffered “psychological trauma” due to the abuse, which left her with “pus-filled wounds” on her hands and legs, and unable to walk. Sulistyaningsih “told us that she was hit in the head, and two of her front teeth were broken after she was punched in the head. She also had a black eye,” the spokeswoman said. She was not given a day off and was only allowed to call her family once for four minutes, and her employer still owes her five million rupiah ($420), Sari added. Reports in Hong Kong have said Sulistyaningsih could have been abused for up to eight months during her employment with a local family after arriving in May last year. Hong Kong police said Tuesday they had launched a criminal investigation after migrant worker groups expressed anger at earlier reports that authorities were not pursuing the case. GENEVA \ Conflicts like the war in Syria and getting the world economy back on track will be the focus of next week’s annual gathering of world leaders and power brokers in the Swiss ski resort of Davos. Organizers of the World Economic Forum said Wednesday that hundreds of public figures are expected to attend, including the leaders of Iran, Israel, Japan and Britain. This year’s event will coincide with the start of the first face-to-face negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition, which will also take place in Switzerland, in the cities of Montreux and Geneva. But the forum’s organizers said they do not yet know how many of the ministers who will be at those talks might then join the event in Davos. The forum’s founder, Klaus Schwab, told reporters Wednesday at the organization’s lavish headquarters overlooking Lake Geneva that the event seeks to “push the reset button” on the world’s crisis mode.
He expects there to be “cautious optimism” among the attendees, but also realistic expectations about what could be achieved. It will be hard, for example, to expect the global economy to return to the high growth rates it enjoyed before the 2008-09 financial crisis. “Confidence seems to come slowly back,” Schwab said of the world economy. “It’s like running with a heavy backpack on your shoulders.” Among the world leaders attending will be Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff, Myanmar’s President Thein Sein and British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Despite the spring located in the sea sand, the water emanating does not taste salty but fresh. Based on the inspiration, it was then established a simple shrine (using tree branches) at several locations.
Until now, the temple had complete buildings funded by the donations from devotees who did purificatory rite and had a vow. He said the temple priest Mangku Gede Linggih who found the temple site has passed away. As the successor, he was replaced by his wife Jro Mangku Lingsir Mangku Sumpang living in Gilimanuk. Meanwhile, Winada added that every full moon, there were always devotees coming from all over Bali and even from Java. They all came to do purificatory rite directly on the beach. But at high tides, the temple attendant had taken holy water for purificatory rite from the three springs and kept it in the temple area. Having performed the purificatory rite, devotees entered into the three temple areas. Devotees said

Here, according to Winada, was venerated the Goddess Ayu Mas Melanting. During the visit, a number of devotees, mostly from outside Jembrana, came to say prayers. They delivered various invocations, some
of which related to recovery from illness, while some others asked for a job opportunity. The three springs used for purificatory rite were arranged by means of concrete manholes at three sites which were adjacent to one other. It was the holy water used for the purificatory rites. “The water of each well tastes different, namely bitter and plain but not salty,” he explained. (kmb)

BRUSSELS-The European Commission is making it easier for smalland medium-sized companies to get state-backed financing, an effort to get credit flowing again and help the economic recovery. The Commission, the 28-nation bloc’s executive arm, said Wednesday its guidelines for state aid rules will be eased from July 1 by allowing governments to further team up with banks. Funding for many European small- and medium-sized companies dried up in the wake of the financial crisis as banks focused on replenishing their coffers and worried about the economic outlook. The Commission says that between 10 and 60 percent of a state-backed loan would have to come from a private sector lender to make sure such aid attracts, rather than replaces, private funding.
Hindus in Bali commemorate a festivity of Tumpek Kandang. The festivity falling every Saniscara (Saturday) Pon Wuku Uye actually has a meaning to develop compassion for all the God’s creatures, especially animals. Through the Tumpek Kandang ritual, people are expected to develop the livestock sector to strengthen the economic foundations. Then, how should devotees interpret the Tumpek Kandang?
In the Sunarigama palm-leaf manuscript is stated that on Saniscara Pon Uye pinaka prakertining sarwa sato. In other words, the day should be made the milestone for preserving all kinds of animals. Celebration of the Tumpek Kandang ritual is not meant to worship the animals. It is a religious festival dedicated to worship Lord Shiva Pasupati, a manifestation of God who has created the animals. On Tumpek Kandang, animals especially cattle are made some celebratory oblations. Essentially, devotees worship the Lord Shiva Pasupati as manifestation of God serving as the king of all the living things. In the ritual procession, devotees invoke blessing in order their cattle could be bestowed with prime healthy and
safety. However, philosophically the Tumpek Kandang celebration implies that people should develop compassion for all the living creatures. In the economic context, the procession mandates that agricultural sector in the broader sense (livestock) can be developed to strengthen the economic foundations of society. Sarasamusccaya says that Ayuwa tan masih ring sarwa prani, apan prani ngaran prana, which means not to ignore any care to animals because they are a force of nature. In other words, people must develop compassion for all beings. Especially on Tumpek Kandang, devotees worship God in His manifestation as Lord Shiva Pasupati in order the cattle could be blessed with welfare. Similarly, the prayers are also recited for other livestock such as pigs, goats, chickens and ducks. Even, a pig for the Hindu community in Bali is often used as a sort of saving or piggy bank. When people hold celebrations, the pigs are slaughter or in emergency case they can be sold to meet the needs. As the animals destined for human food, chickens, ducks, pigs and so forth are often used as a protein source to support the human life. To that end, those animals should be constantly developed.
However, other specific animals, especially those belonged to the endangered species, should be preserved. For example, they are green turtles, Bali starlings, deers, monkeys and so forth. These rare animals must be maintained so as not to become extinct. To keep the endangered species from extinction, Balinese people associate them with mythology. For
instance, the animals are regarded as the property (duwe) of God such as the white cow, ape, fruit bats, snake and so on. Through the mythology, devotees are actually encouraged to conserve the wildlife by preserving them based on religious concepts. Mythology seems much more powerful than a call or an appeal to preserve the endangered species. In the Hindu concept, no single
thing is without the power of God. Inside them lie the jivatman or the soul. On that account, the concept of developing compassion for all the God’s creatures should be continued. Through the celebration Tumpek Kandang, people should develop them well for the benefit of life and preserve the endangered species in order not to become extinct. (kmb)

The increasingly higher rainfall in Baturiti area, Tabanan, in recent days caused a number of vegetable growers to suffer a loss. Selling price of certain vegetables in the market has fallen dramatically. One of the organic vegetable growers at Kembang Merta hamlet, Wayan Balik Ardita, said the operating cost of growing vegetables in rainy season was usually higher than in dry season. It happened because every farmer, particularly the vegetable farmers of certain commodities, should prepare double budget to purchase plastic protector for keeping vegetable plants so as not to be exposed to rain, where such additional costs could reach hundreds of thousands of rupiahs per single line. Nevertheless, the effort did not fully guarantee the farmers’ production to be the same as in normal season. Decline in production stayed to occur, even it reached 50 percent of the usual one because the lack of sunlight caused the plant growth less optimally. “Automatically, the current harvest makes the price of vegetable down. Actually, in rainy season, the treatment or maintenance of the plant requires extra attention. Even, there are also additional costs to be borne,” he said. He said the decreasing price of
vegetables happened to carrots, kale, lettuce, beets and parsley where these kinds of commodity were some of 10 types of vegetables he developed on the 500 square meters of land. He said the current price of kale at the farmer level was IDR 8,000 per kg, decreased from IDR 10,000 per kg previously. Similarly, the price of salad was also down to IDR 20,000 per kg from IDR 25,000 per kg previously. “Fortunately, the declining price of vegetable does not cause to suffer a great loss because of the ten vegetables I cultivate, some still have expensive price, though some others are cheap. Farmers should also keen to see the situation and not cultivate one type of vegetable only,” he said. Mustika, another horticultural farmer, also said that most vegetables at the farmer level currently experienced a decline in price. He admitted such condition did not benefit farmers considering when they were planting about 4-3 months ago, the production costs to be borne was fairly large because of having entered the rainy season. However, when getting
into the harvest time, the price even slumped. “The most expensive price of vegetable at the moment only
includes tomatoes, cabbage and peppers that are indeed easily perishing when exposed to rain. Meanwhile, the price of other types of vegetable is even down because due to increasing production in this harvest season,” he said. Though facing many insistent
problems, Mustika still wanted to grow vegetables. He hoped the selling price of vegetable could increase by degrees in the near future. So, he still benefited from planting vegetables. “If the selling price is high, it can be automatically profitable for me,” he said. (kmb28)
SEOUL - North Korea has demanded that South Korea and the United States halt annual military drills due in February and March, saying they were a direct provocation, a statement that suggested a re-run of a sharp escalation in tension last year. In 2013, North Korea said it would retaliate against any hostile moves by striking at the United States, Japan and South Korea, triggering a military buildup on the Korean peninsula and months of fiery rhetoric. The reclusive North has regularly denounced annual drills such as “Key Resolve” and “Ulchi-Freedom-Guardian” staged by South Korea and United States as a prelude to invasion. “We sternly warn the U.S. and the South Korean authorities to stop the dangerous military exercises which may push the situation on the peninsula and the north-south ties to a catastrophe,” the North’s KCNA state news quoted a body in charge of efforts to promote Korean unification as saying. Similar bellicose rhetoric from the North set South Korea, the United States and Japan on edge a year ago. As a result, Washington flew Stealth bomber missions over South Korea and strengthened its military presence in the South, where nearly 30,000 U.S. troops are based. South Korea said the drills were going ahead as planned and despite the threat, North Korea’s military has showed no sign of unusual activities. “If North Korea actually commits military aggression at the excuse of what is a normal exercise we conduct as preparation for emergency, our military will mercilessly and decisively punish them,” Defence Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said. North and South Korea remain technically at war after their 1950-53 civil conflict ended in a truce, not a treaty. China, North Korea’s only remaining real ally and which has been alarmed by what it sees as provocations by both sides, called for restraint. “All sides have a responsibility to maintain peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and this accords with all sides’ interests,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a daily news briefing. “The overall situation on the Korean peninsula at present is quite fragile. We hope all sides can exercise restraint and not take steps to rile each other.”
High waves in Lombok Strait Folk harbor at Padangbai temporarily closed

Bad weather condition in the Lombok Strait caused the Padangbai harbor authority in Karangasem to temporarily close the folk harbor. Temporary closure of the local harbor was justified by a harbor authority officer of Padangbai, Ketut Arya Dana, Wednesday (Jan 15) at Padangbai. He said the temporary closure of the crossing line of Padangbai to tourist resort in NTB was made after coordinating it with the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of Region III Denpasar. Data division of the agency indicated if the waves in the Lombok Strait reached 1 meter to 5 meters high. While the wave height in the North
Bali coast reached 2.5 meters to three meters and the wind speed reached 42 km per hour. Arya Dana said the crossing line from Padangbai folk harbor to Nusa Penida remained open. Likewise the crossing service from Padangbai – Lembar by using large vessels remained open. However, the harbor authority already underlined in order that all the captains continued to increase their alertness in relation to recent weather condition at sea often experiencing changeable and unpredictable anomalies or irregularities. BANGKOK - Throngs of whistle-blowing protesters were on the march again in the Thai capital Thursday, surrounding several government offices they had not previously interfered with to keep up pressure on the prime minister to resign and call off next month’s election. The marches appeared to be a way to maintain momentum amid a decline in the number of protesters who have blocked key intersections in Bangkok for four days now in an attempt to shut down the government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. Their numbers could swell again this weekend. Yingluck’s opponents, largely from the south and urban middle and upper classes, claim she is carrying on the practices of her billionaire brother by using the family fortune and state funds to influence voters and cement her grip on power. But she has widespread support among Thailand’s poor majority in the countryside because of the populist policies carried out by her brother, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who lives in selfimposed exile to avoid being imprisoned on a corruption conviction. On Wednesday evening, protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban urged followers to march on the offices of the Revenue Department. Thursday morning, a column of flag-waving, chanting protesters marched off to surround three branches of the Revenue Department, asking workers inside to leave - and many did. Last month, protesters had surrounded the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Transport Ministry and other government agencies, prompting some to move to temporary
premises or allow employees to work from home. Other groups of demonstrators targeted the Public Health Ministry and at the Public Works Department. One group led by a Buddhist monk claimed to be headed to the office of the Department of Special Investigation, Thailand’s FBI. The protests this week have been mostly peaceful, although there have been random acts of violence including gunshots in the middle of the night at protest venues. Since the latest wave protests started in November, eight people have been killed and more than 450 have been injured. Despite pressure from the protesters, Yingluck said Wednesday that the Feb. 2 parliamentary election will go ahead. She had dissolved parliament and called the early vote to defuse
tension that has been building over the past three months. But her opponents don’t want an election because they know that her rural supporters would almost certainly give her victory. Instead, they are calling for an unelected “people’s council” to replace the government and amend laws to fight corruption in politics. Yingluck told reporters after a meeting with members of her Cabinet, registered candidates and a top electoral official that there was no legal way for the Election Commission to delay it. “The rights of the people are important,” said Yingluck. She also had offered to meet with rivals Wednesday to discuss an Election Commission proposal to delay the Feb. 2 vote. But protest leader Suthep and the opposition Democrat Party refused to take part, saying reforms to get rid of corruption in politics must happen first. The smiling 45-year-old actor told The Associated Press inside the opulent 19th-century mansion venue that there’s nowhere he’d rather be than the City of Light. “I’ve been taking a few months travelling to places like Buenos Aires. But there’s something distinct about Paris, when you walk around. This is exactly where I want to be right now,” he said, dressed head to toe in Valentino, with some enviable pajama-style pants and a draped scarf. “And it’s great to be at the show. Valentino for me, well, it’s classical perfection.”

The third Paris menswear show for Valentino saw designers Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri (who sported a new, demure short hairstyle) channel ethnic patchwork. “Intarsia,” or mosaic patterns, was how the program notes described the Aztec-like motifs that decorated peacoats, shearling coats and hunting jackets. Woolen coats embroidered like rugs, and tribal wings on shoulders, mirrored the ethnic feel evoked by the myriad carpets that lined the catwalk floor. The show was soft. From rounded shoulders, to pajamas suits and a harmonious blend of camel, gray, indigo blue on felt, every element
gave the collection a snug feel. A long thick striped coat in black, gray and brown had a soft, sumptuous tone. It put the designers in good stead for the launch of their first flagship menswear boutique in Paris on the Rue Saint Honore— designed by architect David Chipperfield — which was inaugurated just after the show. Raf Simons this season collaborated with American artist Sterling Ruby to produce a wacky show with Mickey Mouse shoes, exaggeratedly skinny legs and oversized 1-meter (3-foot) bags set against a backdrop of the U.S. flag. But the leitmotif, a print of the hands and jagged nails of a wicked witch, made the show feel like evil was lurking just beyond the surface. Colorful fabric appliques and diagonal stripes made sure that the focal point of the ensembles
was on the surface and that the the oversize gray marl jackets or black sweaters beneath were subservient. The splashed bleach bursts of color also gave this imaginative show an injection of punk. ECCENTRIC INVITATIONS
In the old-fashioned postwar days of Monsieur Dior, fashion show invitations were sacred templates, only to be written upon by professional calligraphers. How times have changed! The once-classical invite has over the years been given a dramatic overhaul. In a bid to attract attention for their collections, houses are resorting more and more to inventive gimmicks. The winner of the most eccentric invitation for Wednesday’s shows was the design house 22/4, who lured in guests with a blurred invitation card that could only be read with magic eye goggles (included, fortunately, in the envelope.) Raf Simons’ was a close second with a huge poster that was left blank apart from his name. With Paris menswear week ballooning with some 50 official shows and countless off-calendar collections, it’s little wonder that
houses are trying hard to separate themselves from the pack. CARVEN DESIGNER’S CATWALK DEBUT
A billiard room, the place of the dapper yet playful gentleman, was the set for designer Guillaume Henry’s strong debut catwalk show for Carven. Two old school wooden game tables, floodlit in film noir lighting, served as the obstacles around which some 36 often-retro looks filed by. Many of garments came in what the program notes call the “faded shades of old photos,” coal, slate gray, black and offwhite. And above-the-ankle tapered pants, together with ‘60s large check tweed and highbuttoned woolen jackets with narrow shoulders and excessive collars added to the vintage mood. But playfulness, more than nostalgia, ended up dominating the show. Graffiti prints, based on photographer Brassai, jazzed up otherwise classical button-up shirts, and even came as flashes on two ensembles worn — in a cheeky, and on-trend touch — by female models.

Ngenjut memedi procession (burning or cremating negative forces) was held on Wednesday (Jan 15) right at 12:00 a.m. at Pesedahan village, Karangasem. Chief of Tegak Pasek, Pasedahan village, Nyoman Wage, said the ngenjut memedi procession related to ritual procession on the full moon in the seventh month in Balinese calendar (January). According to Wage doubling as Spokesperson of Karangasem government, the procession of ngenjut memedi was unique and relatively rare. It happened because such a tradition had been abandoned by other villages. According to him, the tradition was essentially a repellence of calamity which could be generated by evil spirits or negative magical powers. It was visible from the ritual held since three days in advance where residents put an offering in the platform shrine on the left and right side of entrance gates (apit lawang) and placement of the cuts of thorny plant. The thorn served as repellence and catcher to negative magical powers. On the third
day namely Wednesday (Jan 15), the magical negative power or memedi caught in the thorns was cremated at the village crossroad. The fire was lit by dried coconut leaves and api takepan or two pieces of coconut fiber put faceto-face with bran. The cremation or ngenjut memedi had the same philosophy as neutralizing bhutakala in the Tawur Kesanga ritual and pengerupukan related to Nyepi or Day of Silence. “The seventh month (January) is known as a transitional season. Erratic weather causes a lot of people to fall sick,” he said. Ritual on the full moon of the seventh month related to the ngenjut memedi procession was also associated with
the temple ritual in the Rambut Petung Temple and in the shrine of Ida Rambut Sedana with the means of nasi segehan. After cremation, each household installed a bamboo shrine (sanggah cucuk) on the right side of entrance gate. Memedi or magical negative power cremated was then assigned on the bamboo shrine. For a month, local residents put offerings and other necessity on the bamboo shrine. A month later in the eighth month was resumed with ngusaba ritual in the Dalem Temple. Meanwhile, the bamboo shrine and platform of the memedi were eliminated in the cemetery. It was the peak of neutralizing bhutakala en masse at Pasedahan village. (013)

Drug case with the suspect Verchere Thierry Claude Josep, 47, from France, has been investigated by Denpasar Police Narcotics Detective. Later, it was known if the suspect seemed to keep a drug belonging to cocaine type. He acknowledged such illicit goods were given by his friend from Iran. Chief of Denpasar Police, Djoko Hariutomo, accompanied by Chief of Narcotics Detective, Agus Tri Waluyo, said on Wednesday (Jan 15) that so far the suspect admitted to be a user. Following the positive case of rabies at Umajero village, Busungbiu subdistrict, the Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency did not keep silent. Dozens of dogs owned by local residents were injected with anti-rabies vaccine (VAR), Wednesday (Jan 15). The agency also reminded residents of limiting the pet dog raised to avoid transmission of rabies. The vaccination last Wednesday was chaired in person by the Head of Animal Health, Wayan Susila, with a number of field extension workers. On arriving at Umajero, the officers immediately vaccinated the residents’ dog. They came into people’s homes. Unfortunately, most people’s homes were left empty because the owners worked in the plantation. Many dogs were also allowed to stray and not tied. As a result, the officers only managed to vaccine a total of 20 dogs owned by residents, while eight wild dogs were eliminated because their owner was unclear. Elimination to the eight stray dogs was made by using blowpipe and special poison. Dogs that successfully targeted by the officers died slowly. After being declared dead, the officers also took a sample of the dog’s head to be studied at the Center for Veterinary at the Bali Livestock Agency. When asked for his confirmation after the vaccination, the Division Head of Animal Health of the Buleleng Livestock Agency, Wayan Susila, said the effort was the follow-up of the positive rabies case at Umajero village. Since the case emerged the Buleleng Livestock Agency had localized dogs at Umajero and surrounding areas. Besides, the traffic of dog coming into and out of Umajero was also closed for a while. After that effort, the vaccination was intensified to prevent in order the dogs owned by residents would not be contracted by rabies. In addition, wild dogs without clear owner were eliminated as suspected to contract disease and potentially transmitted rabies. “Yes, it is our continued effort to prevent the emergence of another positive case of rabies at this village,” he said. On the other hand, Susila said that other efforts made to prevent the emergence of rabies cases at Umajero was prohibiting residents from raising dogs more than two heads. When people were found to raise more than two dogs, the Buleleng Livestock Agency would eliminate the dog. This preventive effort had been informed to village authorities and received the support from residents to jointly take care of dogs properly for the sake of safety. “We estimate the dog population at Umajero village is more than 200 dogs. From now on, we will begin to limit. Hopefully, people can comply with our suggestion. Otherwise, there will be elimination effort against the dog whose owner was unclearly known,” he explained. As planned, the vaccination and elimination of dogs at Umajero would continue on Thursday (Jan 16). This dog vaccination was intended to accomplish all dogs that had not been reached in the previous vaccination. The agency urged residents to tie their dog, so when the officers arrived they could directly vaccinate the dogs. Previously, a resident of Umajero was stated to have been infected by rabies. The resident was treated in Sanglah Hospital and eventually died. The resident previously bitten by dog was declared to be positive to rabies. Responding to the emergence of the case, the Buleleng Livestock Agency took steps to prevent and localize the dog population at Umajero to avoid contracting with rabies. (mud)

An irrigation channel at Subak Gerubugan, Demulih village, Susut, Bangli, collapsed as hit by heavy rains. Aside from causing the subak irrigation channel to collapse, the avalanche materials of the revetment also stockpiled most areas of watershed beneath. As the impact, dozens of hectares of paddy fields owned by local farmers having been ready to bear fruit was ultimately threatened by harvest failure. The collapse along some 20 meters was alleged to be not strong enough to hold rainwater coming through into the ground. Within the past few weeks, heavy rains continued to flush Bangli and surrounding areas. Avalanche materials of the revetment stockpiling some parts of the water channel had made the water flow gradually diminished. Local farmers were screaming because the abundant harvests
expected was threatened to vanish. One of the local farmers, Ketut Gablogan, said the irrigation channel at his subak area was previously smooth. A billboard owned by a regional representative candidate (DPD RI) located at Bukit hamlet, Tampaksiring, Gianyar, claimed a victim on Wednesday afternoon (Jan 15) around 4:00 p.m. A family, I Gusti Kompyang Raka, 45, from the Penginyaan village, Ubud, along with his wife, Jro Putu Nistri, 42, and his 6-year old son Gusti Ketut Rai, was toppled over by the billboard. The family was eventually hospitalized in Sanjiwani Hospital, Gianyar. In the incident of collapsed billboard owned by the legislative candidate with the picture of Dewa Made Suamba Negara, Jro Putu Nistri was knocked unconscious and suffered a number of blisters on her feet. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

The force of “Gravity” may be about to exert itself on Hollywood’s awards season. When Academy Award nominations are announced Thursday morning from Beverly Hills, California, Alfonso Cuaron’s 3-D space adventure will likely rival “12 Years a Slave” and “American Hustle” in a close contest for most-nominated film. Though much of the season has been a see-saw between Steve McQueen’s heavy historical epic and David O. Russell’s lighter Abscam melodrama, “Gravity” should emerge Thursday as an equally strong Oscar contender. All three are locks for a best picture nomination. And while “Gravity,” with a cast of just a few, won’t reap the acting nods that the acclaimed ensembles of “American Hustle” and “12 Years a Slave” will, it holds an edge in technical categories. Cuaron’s box-office hit ($670 million worldwide) has been hailed for its innovative visual effects, which are sure to be honored by the academy. The Golden Globes are typically a weak forecaster to the Oscars, but last Sunday’s ceremony reflected consensus by naming “American Hustle” best comedy and “12 Years a Slave” best drama. Hollywood’s guilds, whose members largely make up the academy, have in their awards nominations also voiced strong support for Paul Greengrass’ Somali pirate docudrama “Captain Phillips,” Martin Scorsese’s finance fiasco “The Wolf of Wall Street” and Alexander Payne’s black-and-white road trip “Nebraska.” But an added bit of intrigue, as has been the case in recent years, is how many bestpicture nominees there will be. It could be anywhere between five and 10. Films somewhere on the bubble are “Dallas Buyers Club,” ‘’Her,” ‘’Saving Mr. Banks,”
‘’Philomena” and “Inside Llewyn Davis.” Though the Coen brothers’ “Inside Llewyn Davis” was once viewed as a near certainty, the early 1960s folk tale was overlooked by the screen actors, producers, writers and directors guilds, seemingly dooming its chances. The most-watched category may be best actor. This year’s candidates are especially strong, including Matthew McConaughey (“Dallas Buyers Club”), Chiwetel Ejiofor (“12 Years a Slave”), Tom Hanks (“Captain Phillips”), Bruce Dern (“Nebraska”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Wolf of Wall Street”) and Robert Redford (“All Is Lost”). That’s six names for five spots, and many believe Redford (who has never won an acting Oscar) will be the odd man out after the Screen Actors Guild snubbed him. The cast of the four-hour project, “Labyrinth,” includes former “Downton Abbey” star Jessica Brown-Findlay, along with Vanessa Kirby, Sebastian Stan and John Hurt. The miniseries centers on a 13th-century teenager and a modern woman, and their shared quest for the grail, the cup said to have been used by Jesus Christ. “Labyrinth” is adapted from Kate Mosse’s best-selling novel of the same name. An air date wasn’t announced for the drama, which has appeared in Britain and elsewhere. The network also said Wednesday it’s adding two reality series to its schedule later this year: “Barber Battle,” a competition series hosted by Cedric The Entertainer, and “Penn & Teller: Fool Us,” in which aspiring magicians perform their best tricks for the comedy duo. Airdates for the reality shows were not announced.
