A number of residents have complained with the piling rubbish at Benoa Cape as these rubbishes around water sport area was never taken care maximally by the private side. Residents worry if it’s not taken care well, these rubbishes can disturb the tourism area’s image. Head of Badung Cleanness and Garden Agency (DKP) Putu Eka Merthawan admitted last Saturday (15/1) that he had received these complains since a month ago. For that, Merthawan stated he is ready to take over in taking care of the
rubbishes as all this time was taken care by private businesses. Only just they haven’t done it as they haven’t coordinate with the private side connected as in South Kuta there have been six private businesses that manages rubbishes in this area. Merthawan clarified, DKP Badung will principally help this waste management by picking these rubbishes. Tidal waves have been causing a number of fishermen houses in Buleleng Sea shores damaged or dragged and can’t be just solved by giving building materials help. These people have to be relocated to a safer place according to Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika on Saturday (15/ 1) when visiting fishermen at Kubu Jati shores, North Banyuning, Buleleng. Last Wednesday (12/1) many fishermen houses were damaged due to the waves. According to Governor the only way to manage tidal waves victims in Buleleng and other areas in Bali is to relocate their houses to a safer place. Bali Province is ready to relocate them if the regional government will prepare a land for them, “Every year tidal waves happened and the only way is to move these residents. We are ready for that so this damage won’t happen every year.” In other hand, Governor stated the Buleleng Government post-disaster help request have been received by the province government. Barbed irons have also been sent to
mend the bridge at Titab Village, Busungbiu and other areas, “We have received Buleleng Government help request and still being looked through before realized.” Buleleng Secretary, Ketut Gelgel Ariadi who accompanied the Governor clarified that his side have relocated sea shores residents such as in Bungkulan Village, Sawan, by giving a house in a safer place. Only just, these residents are still using their sea shore houses as a place to put their fishing equipment. Banyuaning Village Head, Nyoman Sutena, stated since last Wednesday, 14 houses have been
damaged by four meters high waves. Most of theses houses were seriously damaged such as walls and roofs broken down. Besides that, shrines were also victimized, “Approximately every family are experiencing IDR 3,5 million to IDR 5 million loss.” These sea shore houses are renting lands owned by the village with IDR 30.000 per hundred square meters per year. Another petrol station has been robbed on Saturday (15/1) at 2.30 am local time despite the previous two similar robbery cases have not come to a close. This time, the armed robbers managed to take IDR 35 million cash with them from a petrol station at Sibang Kaja Raya Street, Ambiansemal, Badung. Besides armed, the robbers are also using masks, hiding their characteristics. It is strongly suspected that there are more than three robbers as a witness stated. As a car came to the petrol station, the three executed and those who are in the car are unknown. “There might be more than three men,” head of Badung Police Criminal Research Section, AKP Soma Adnyana, stated. Adnyana explained, his side is still investigating it. Even though a number of witnesses have been interviewed, police still couldn’t find the enlightening point yet. Also the two workers of the crime scene, Made Sudarta (35) and Nyoman Sugiana (34) did not pay attention to the three robbers coming in to the place where they sell packaged oil as they were threaten while sleeping. The robbers came in by forcing open the doors which caused the two workers shocked. The two workers were at gun point and threaten to be killed if they fight back or shout. The workers hand and feet were then tied up also their mouth stuck with plaster, “After the two victims were taken care, robbers then divided their duties.” One robber supervised the two victims, while the two others looked
for the safe. After several minutes, the money safe was found and opened it with a crowbar, “Inside it there was IDR 34,8 million cash. It was then taken by them.” It was also said that Sudarta’s money as much as IDR 800.000 was also taken. Successfully robbing it, the robbers then went by their car yet it’s not known what kind of car they are using, “A witness said that they came to the petrol station areal with a reason wanting to pee. They were using a car and parked it on the petrol station areal. Yet witness did not pay attention what’s the person like as witness thought they wanted to do that in purpose.” Soma Adnyana mentioned that it is strongly suspected the robbers were the same as those robberies at Kedewatan Petrol Station, Gianyar and Udayana Petrol Station, Jimbaran. It can be seen from the modus of targeting petrol stations, acted early morning, put victims at gun point and more than three people acted, “It is strongly suspected they’re the same robbers yet we are still investigating it. We also can’t confirm it yet if the guns were real or fake.” Adnyana suspected that these robbers have surveyed the location at first as those petrol stations victimized did not have securities or any CCTV. This was known after the areal was checked by police, “There are no securities or CCTV. And so, robbers have surveyed it before. It is ashamed this happen as there has been socialization again and again on having securities and CCTV placed on a place like this.” (kmb21)

A bus of Denpasar-Gilimanuk route tumbled in the rice field area at the roadside on the border of Medewi – Pulukan on Saturday (Jan 15) afternoon. Although there were no casualties, but dozens of passengers of the bus with license plate DK 7325 BW were injured. According to several eyewitnesses, the yellow Darma bus was out of the Denpasar-Gilimanuk route because of avoiding a falling down motorcycle. The bus driver, Komang Sulatra, 30, from Karangasem was forced to swerve to the South. Sulatra who was met on Saturday afternoon at the scene said the bus was carrying about 12 passengers from Denpasar to Negara. On arriving at the scene just before the bridge of
Medewi, there was a motorcycle falling down in front of him and he tried to avoid it. The bus then plunged into a sufficiently deep rice field from the road. Position of the bus was upsidedown until the tires were right at the top. As a result, the front windshield and bumper of the buses shattered. Meanwhile, dozens of passengers once shouted hysterically and suffered from injuries due to the inci-
dent. Even, according to witnesses at the scene, there was a passenger from Kaliakah Negara whose teeth fall out and had gone home. Up to Saturday afternoon, police officers and local residents were trying to pull the bus. Therefore, the role of navigation is critical to the existence of Bali tourism,” said Sunaryo. Therefore, he continued that marine transportation had a major role in supporting the smoothness of tourism implementation. However, Sunaryo admitted that so far there was a communication gap between the marine tourism management with the navigation system. Such a condition caused the operator of marine tourism services often not to obey the prevailing regulations. The communication gap, said Sunaryo, should be addressed as
soon as possible. First of all, it should be resolved internally, and then continued to external level. Communication should be actively encouraged to continue, so that such communication gap could be resolved accordingly. Afterward, he gave an example of communication gap. Frequently, the agents of marine tourism services made a sudden report to the harbor administration regarding to their activities. In reality, the schedule had been arranged a long time before, so the agents had enough opportunity to report the activity plan earlier. “As it was reported suddenly, perhaps the officers of harbor administration were unable to complete the report on his desk on time. Consequently, its own negligence caused someone else to get the impact. To sum up, the voyage schedule was cancelled,” said Sunaryo. Related to the issues, Sunaryo really expected the operators of marine tourist services to continuously develop their professional attitude. They might not delay any jobs if they could be accomplished immediately. “A lot of marine tourism operators made their report five minutes prior to departure. They had various reasons. Some said it was due to traffic congestion and difficulty in arranging the schedule,” he added. Sunaryo ensured that communication gap would create a significant decline in Bali tourism. He analogized the role played by the operators of maritime tourism services to a bridge. If the bridge was damaged, the hope to make the Bali tourism a famous tourist destination throughout Indonesia would come to an end. (015)
Bali Cultural Services to digitize thousands Baby found in Detergent Package of ancient palm-leaf manuscripts Shocked Residents
Bali Provincial Government through the Bali Cultural Services (Disbud) is currently concentrating to save the literary and cultural works retained in the palm-leaf manuscripts through a process of digitization. For the first phase, about three thousand of ancient manuscripts denoting the collections of Bali Cultural Services are ready to be digitized during the year 2011. The Head of Bali Cultural Services, I Ketut Suastika, told Bali Post about the matter, Friday (Jan 14). According to Suastika, most of the digitized ancient manuscripts consisted of the epic story of Ramayana, traditional healing (Usada) and philosophy of life. Padangtegal Kelod residents, Ubud, Gianyar were shocked on Saturday (15/1) as a baby body was found inside a detergent package in the drainage of a land owned by Made Suardana. The baby boy was found not breathing and suspected to have been purposely killed then thrown away at a place far from the crowds. From information received, the baby was found around 9 am local time by a rubbish picker. It was then reported to a land worker from Mas Village, Ubud. The worker then told the land owner about it which then forwarded to the banjar and police. The body caused Suardana disbelieving it as the baby was not crowded by flies and only several ants. Yet after seeing it closely, the baby was being thrown away and only its head can be seen. Checked by the Ubud Health
Community Center I, the baby is a boy and was killed after being born as his umbilical is still attached. There was also a strangle mark on the baby’s neck. The baby was predicted to have weighed 1 kg, height 32 cm and head circle 23 cm, according to Midwife Ni Nyoman Sekar and dr. Gede Wirawan. The baby’s age is 7 months and died six hours before found. It is proven by the fresh blood on his body and the cloth that wraps him. This case worried local residents. Ubud Village Head also came to location to see it. Head of Ubud Police Sector, AKP Gede Redastra, is still investigating the case. A number of witnesses have been interviewed and to investigate it further, there will be a forensic test on the baby’s body by autopsy. Made in China porcelain for royal wedding Reuters
BEILIU, China – A Chinese porcelain manufacturing company has won the order to make the official tableware to be used at the British royal wedding of Prince William and his fiancee Kate Middleton. Guangxi Sanhuan Group, based in Beiliu, a city in China’s southern Guangxi province known locally for its ceramics and porcelain ware, said they came out tops over more than 500 companies bidding to produce royal wedding porcelain, fighting off stiff competition from manufacturers around the globe. The company is now taxed with producing some 16,000 porcelain tableware products to be used at the wedding. Company officials said the products are divided into five categories including a dining plate, a coffee cup and saucer set, a commemorative mug and a souvenir plate. They will be either used at the wedding or given to wedding guests as souvenirs. The design is generally a uniform one featuring a photograph of Prince William and Kate Middleton inside a heart shape with the words “William and Catherine” written below.
“When we won the order, our company bosses were very happy and excited,” said Gary Qiu, a marketing manager for the Guangxi Sanhuan Group. “They paid great attention to it. The entire production process including its preparation was worked on a very tight schedule. Also, we used one of the most advanced kilns in China to make these products.” Established in 1987, Guangxi Sanhuan is a modern Chinese success story — a once state-owned company that has now gone private, tailoring a reputation of being a quality manufacturer for ceramics and porcelain over the last decade. It employs more than 8,000 and is known for producing high-end table and dining ware for export to Europe, the United States and Southeast Asia. Qiu said a special high-fire glazing technique is being used to manufacture the wedding porcelain, with the plates and mugs being set at temperatures of more than 1600 degrees C in the kilns. This will ensure the longevity of the china, a theme the company used in its winning bid for the order. “As long as this plate is not broken or smashed up, it will never change,” Qiu added.

SEOUL, South Korea – The top diplomats of South Korea and Japan showed North Korea a tough, unified face Saturday, saying it must prove it is serious about giving up its atomic ambitions before they will allow a new round of aidfor-nuclear disarmament talks. South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan told reporters after a meeting in Seoul with his Japanese counterpart, Seiji Maehara, that the North
must demonstrate its “true commitment” to abandoning a nuclear program that is believed to have produced enough weaponized plutonium for at least half a dozen bombs. The North also unveiled in November a uranium enrichment facility that could give it a second way to make atomic bombs. South Korean President Lee Myungbak told Maehara in a separate meeting that the issue of North’s uranium enrichment should be taken to the U.N. Security Council, presidential spokeswoman Kim Hee-jung said. Maehara agreed, she said. North Korea, which
shelled a South Korean island in November, killing four, has expressed its desire to restart the nuclear talks it quit in early 2009. The talks involve the two Koreas, Japan, the United States, China and Russia. South Korea, the United States and Japan, frustrated over what they see as the North’s habit of breaking nuclear deals once it has received much-needed aid, want it to first show its good faith on disarmament. “North Korea should show its true commitment toward denuclearization through specific actions,” Kim

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

SAWANG - State Enterprises Minister Mustafa Abubakar said palm oil and rubber commodities are promising and therefore he called on banks not to hesitate to extend credit for palm oil and rubber plantation development. “Banks must not hesitate to extend as much credit as possible for development of commodity plantations,” he said on the sidelines of the launching of rubber and palm oil plantations in Sawang, North Aceh, here on Saturday. He said palm oil and rubber are promising commodities. “Right now the national palm oil production has reached 19 million tons a year or 45 percent of total world’s production,” he said. He said with the help of banks through their credit the
government’s efforts to revitalize land would get a boost. The palm oil and rubber plantation development program in Sawang, North Aceh, covers 41,200 hectares of people’s land in 12 districts. Initially a total of 19,200 hectares of palm oil and rubber plantations would be opened in North Aceh, East Aceh and Aceh Tamiang. The project is financed by PT Bank Mandiri and PT Bank BNI, guaranteed by PT Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN) III and PTPN IV. The revitalization program will involve 20,500 families as local farmer participants. Each of the families will be allocated an average of two hectares of land. The program is expected to be able to accelerate plantation development to improve the welfare of the people in Aceh.

certain processes. Indonesian ambassador to ASEAN Ngurah Swajaya on the occasion said based on the ASEAN Charter Timor Leste could become a candidate for ASEAN members in terms of requirements. He said Timor Leste is targeting ASEAN membership in 2011 from originally 2012 but until now Timor Leste has not sent an official application letter. He said Indonesia has so far helped Timor Leste develop its human resources and institutions since four years ago “by assigning one of
our senior officials as an adviser in Timor Leste’s foreign ministry to train and prepare their diplomats to deal with ASEAN meetings.” Based on the membership regulations assessment would be carried out and meetings would be held to study their application. And later based on a consensus ASEAN members would decide whether or not to accept the new member, he said. Right now Timor Leste is just setting up embassies in all ASEAN member countries. They have so far had four embassies namely in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and Ma-
laysia, he said. Timor Leste is now also preparing itself to host the ASEAN Regional Forum expected early this year. Regarding the East Asia Summit planned in Indonesia in November this year, Ngurah mentioned about the European Union’s wish to join it since 2007. Until now ASEAN has not decided if the EU could join it. East Asia Summit itself will be attended by leaders from ASEAN and six countries joining the meeting namely South Korea, Japan, the US, Russia, Australia and China.

He said that Indonesia wanted to expand its cooperation with Japan in other form such as joint military exercises or operations. DENPASAR - Bali province is building a new sea port for large cruise ships slated to be ready for operation by the end of this year, a local official said. “The provincial government has disbursed additional construction funds totaling 4.0 billion rupiahs from this year’s budget for the construction of additional facilities at the new port,” said I Made Santha, a Bali provincial government spokesman said here on Saturday. The new seaport was located at Tanah Ampo in Karangasem district on the eastern tip of Bali. The port has designed to be able of accommodating large cruise ships. Its pier would be at least 200 meters long to serve ships carrying between 3,000-5,000 tourists
each. The main pier of the new port has already been completed and is currently undergoing finishing touches, he added. The new port was actually a national project, said Made Santha, as the largest portion of the funding had come from the central government’s budget of 92.2 billion rupiahs, with an additional budget provided by the Transport Ministry and Public Works Ministry. The bulk of the funding has already been spent on feasibility study works, the physical construc-
tion of the main pier of 154 long and 12 meters wide and the construction of an access road to the port. In an effort to expedite the completion of the new tourism facility, Bali provincial government has allocated a total fund of 18.7 billion rupiahs to cover up the cost of additional expenditure on land appropriation and construction of electricity and clean water networks. Made Santha said Bali expects to receive a tourist spillover from Singapore which is visited by at least 300 cruise ships annually.
Hotel occupancy rate in Bali 59% Antara
DENPASAR – Hotel occupancy rate for star hotel in Bali was 59% during November 2010. The number decreased 5% compare to the pervious month which was 64%. I Gede Suarsa, the head of Bali Statistics Department, said “the hotel occupancy rate is highly connected with the number of tourists visited Bali.” He added that the number of tourists came to Bali in Novem-
ber was also decreasing. There was 13% decrease compare to October 2010. Six out of nine regencies in Bali have star hotels and the highest hotel occupancy rate was in Badung which was 67% followed by Denpasar 55% and Karangasem also 55%. The occupancy rate in Gianyar was 52% and in Tabanan 47%, while the lowest was in Buleleng which was only 28%. Other regencies which are Jembrana, Klungkung, and Bangli, don’t have star hotels yet.
Suarsa said that the highest hotel occupancy rate was in four star hotel, followed by one star, three star, two star, and lastly five star hotel. The length of stay of the tourists was also decreasing. The average stay of foreign tourists was 2.88 days, decreased 0.71% compared to the pervious month which was 3.59 days. With an adequate road access, tourists will spread to all regions of Bali,” said the Regional Coordinator of the Association of the Indonesia Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA) for Bali, NTB and NTT, Bagus Sudibya, Thursday (Jan 13). With adequate road access, the tourism potential owned by respective regency of Bali would become increasingly developed. The spread of tourists throughout Bali would automatically affect the distribution of means of accommodation and other tourism facilities. “If this can be realized immediately, we have confidence the equalization of tourism growth will be realized. Moreover, if supported by the development of the airport,” he said optimistically. Bagus Sudibya also asked the government to pay a great attention to managing a number of tourist attractions in Bali that were far from a professional impression. Island of the Gods posed one of the regions having the advantage of tourism. The region offered a variety of tourist attractions such as culture, shopping, culinary, and others. However, the potential would not bring optimal benefits if the government did not

DENPASAR - Bali is facing complicated environmental problems as a result of rapid development of its tourism sector during the past few years, an observer said. Chief of Guide Study at Hindu Dharma Negeri Institute (IHDN) I Ketut Sumadi said on Thursday among the environmental problems were water pollution and a decrease in the quality of natural resources and the Denpasar city’s environment. Sumadi said infrastructure and supporting public facilities were also being damaged gradually due to rapid development of the tourism sector in Bali. He said the negative impact of
tourism development could also be seen in the increasing number of forest areas being turned into s tourist spots. Apart from disturbing the ecosystem, he said, this had the potential of triggering natural disasters such as floods and landslides. Ketut blamed the local government for allowing rapid tourism development in Bali during the last three decades which according to him had caused the province’s environment to deteriorate. Balinese Culture Bali’s snapper export 402 tons Antara
DENPASAR – Bali was exporting 402 tons of snapper which worth $1.82 million during January through November 2010. The volume was increasing 34% and the revenue gained was also increasing up to 83% compare to the similar period in 2009. The head of Bali Marine and Fishery Department, I Gusti Putu Nuriartha, said that the revenue gained in 2009 from snapper export was only $993,573. He said that the fish was one of the main marine
products which were exported to various countries. In total, Bali gained $107 million from the exports in 2010. The number increase 13% compare to the export in 2009 which was $94 million. Nuriartha said that fresh and frozen snapper was exported to Japan, US, Singapore, Hong Kong, Germany, and the Netherlands. Snapper donate more than 10% of the revenue gained from marine products export besides 10 other products such as crabs, tuna fish, scrimps, and sea weed. “In order to increase the number
of export, we urge the small and middle business to also manage marine product. There is great hope that it can give extra income to the fish farmer and fishermen,” Nuriartha said. The effort is done by giving training in managing the marine products. He explained that currently, the income gained by the fish fishermen in Bali is 16 million rupiah and hopefully it can be increased into 18 million this year. It also can open new jobs to over 110.000 million people in Bali in a year, Nuriartha said.

INGREDIENTS: 2,5 lt (10 cups) water 600 gr (1 ¼ lb) ox tongue, washed well 1 cup beef stock 4 tbsp sweet soy sauce (kecap manis) 2 tbsp thin soy sauce ¾ tsp ground black pepper ¼ tsp freshly grated nutmeg 4 ea salam leaves 3 fragrant lime leaves 3 tbsp fried shallots 3 medium size potatoes, peeled and cut in 2 cm (3/4 in dice) Fried shallots to garnish PREPARATION: 1. Bring water to boil in a heavy stockpot, add beef spice paste and salam leaves, whole ox tongue and bring back to boil. 2. Reduce heat and simmer for approximately 3 hours or until tongue is cooked and very tender. 3. Plunge ox tongue into ice water and cool for 5 minutes. Peel skin off with a sharp knife. 4. Slice ox tongue in thin even slices and place in saucepan. 5. Fill up with beef stock and add all remaining ingredients. Bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. 6. BUSINESS AIG recapitalization deal closes, share sale looms Reuters
NEW YORK – The recapitalization of bailed-out insurer American International Group Inc closed on Friday, leaving the government with a 92 percent stake that it plans to sell quickly. Bankers were buzzing on Friday about how soon that might happen, with at least one saying he would not be surprised if the government picked the deal’s managers next week and others saying the fee on the deal was already under pressure. AIG Chief Executive Bob Benmosche, in an interview, said the company was hoping to pick the deal’s managers as soon as was practical, although he gave no timeframe. Benmosche was in Washington for lunch with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. A person familiar with the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the government and the company would talk this weekend about how many and which banks to pick as coordinators, with an announcement likely early next week. The person said if all goes well with the sales process — particularly if AIG can meet a challenge to sell itself and its new structure to investors — then a share offering of at least $15 billion was entirely possible in the near future. But even before Benmosche and AIG go out on a roadshow to tell their new post-restructuring story, the company’s largest shareholder after the government said he had no doubt about sticking with his investment. “We are committed to AIG and looking forward to many years of happy returns,” Fairholme Funds Inc’s Bruce Berkowitz said in an interview. “We want to try and help AIG in any way we can, recogniz-
ing that it’s a huge opportunity for Fairholme and its investors.” The recapitalization was intended to simplify AIG’s $182 billion bailout by paying off the Federal Reserve and leaving the U.S. Treasury as AIG’s majority owner. The Treasury said on Friday its cash investment in AIG is now $68 billion. “Treasury remains optimistic that taxpayers will get back every dollar of their investment in AIG,” Geithner said in a statement. The government stands to make a profit in the tens of billions of dollars on its AIG shares, given their appreciation over the last year. A person familiar with the situation told Reuters on Monday a large Treasury-AIG share sale was likely after mid-May, and other sources have said in the past that Treasury likely would dispose of the stake by 2012. The Treasury spent all day Thursday meeting bankers in New York to find the right group to manage the stock sales. The CEOs of some of the world’s largest financial institutions appeared in person to make their case for what could be one of the 10 largest share offers ever. Sources have said the banks’ proposals would includes fees of no more than 75 basis points — some $150 million for the winning banks on a $20 billion deal, but half the typical fee for a deal of this type and size. Some bankers said on Friday they would not be surprised, given the
competitive nature of the deal, if the fees went even lower — although one banker pointedly noted he had no interest in doing the deal for free. The fee structure would be broadly in line with what the government paid banks last year to manage the initial public offering of automaker General Motors Co. Multiple people familiar with the situation said it did not make sense for the AIG fees to be higher than for GM. “It’s like buying a missile at $1 billion when the last time you paid half a billion,” one person said. There is a broad assumption among bankers involved in the process that those who committed to $4.3 billion in bank credit lines for AIG in December have the best chance of winning a lead role in the share sale. JPMorgan Chase & Co, Bank of America Corp and Citigroup Inc were joint lead arrangers. Having a lead role gives a bank a larger chunk of the fee pool, more control over the sale process and the prestige of having managed a marquee deal for the U.S. government. The government saved AIG from collapse in September 2008. Over the last year, the company has raised tens of billions of dollars through asset sales and IPOs of international units as it slimmed down and shifted focus. AIG shares fell 5.6 percent to close at $54. The stock price has fallen in recent days and is expected to settle in the mid-$40s level by next week as stock warrants start trading.

TOKYO – Toyota Motor will consider shifting factories overseas if the yen stays high and puts pressure on its profits, the company president said. “We do not wish to relocate production sites because of currencies and foreign exchange alone,” Akio Toyoda said in a Japaneselanguage online message dated Friday. However, he added, “if profits cannot be generated” despite efforts towards efficient, good-quality manufacturing and training, “we have no choice but to consider relocation of production sites as a real possibility.”
The company plans to release a fresh medium-term business plan in April, he added. Japanese exporters, led by automakers and electronics producers, have come under pressure from the rising yen in recent months. A strong yen makes Japanese exports relatively more expensive in foreign markets, while shrinking the value of Japanese firms’ overseas earnings when repatriated. Meanwhile, Japanese automakers have been shifting more of their production and sales overseas — particularly to growing Asian markets — as younger Japanese motorists avoid car pur-
chases due to the high costs of fuel, maintenance and tax. MAINZ – German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Saturday any measure to stabilize the euro should come within a complete strategic package, dampening hopes for a quick decision on moves to tackle the euro zone debt crisis. Germany faces mounting pressure from the European Commission and its euro zone partners to strengthen a rescue fund for troubled member states, the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF). “If the discussion is about a further package of measures, it is above all important that we develop a complete strategy that must absolutely include closer economic coordination,” Merkel told a news conference in Mainz after a meeting with other senior members of her ruling Christian Democrats. “You cannot simply raise another particular aspect each day,” she added. Berlin insists it sees no need to commit more funds to the 440 billion euro ($591.7 billion) EFSF, which has so far been tapped only by Ireland. Instead, the German government is open to a discussion about way to enable the existing fund to be used in full. Senior European sources told Reuters, however, that the sense of urgency in Berlin for boosting the fund had diminished after successful bond auctions this week in Spain and Portugal, the two countries seen most at risk of a bailout following rescues of Greece and Ireland last year. Instead Germany is pushing for broader anti-crisis measures to be agreed at a summit of European Union leaders in March. Only around 250 billion euros of the 440 billion euro fund are effectively available
to euro zone countries because of a complex loan guarantee system. That would probably not be enough in the event bailouts are needed of both Portugal and Spain. “Given the mechanics of the rescue fund, this sum cannot be fully utilized in the form of credit, because a certain amount of capital reserves need to be built up to maintain the AAA rating that is necessary for favorable financing,” German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble was cited as saying in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung. “We have to and will solve this problem,” he said. This sentiment was echoed in an international European Commission paper, according to another media report on Saturday. “The finances available within the EFSF must be raised to at least 440 billion euros,” the paper read, as cited by Der Spiegel. “Member states are ready to reconsider the size of the EFSF, whenever this is necessary.” Schaeuble said he did not expect Portugal, Spain, Italy and Belgium to need to draw upon the rescue fund. “No one is rushing to ask for aid from the fund, because this also means strict conditions for national budgetary and financial policy,” he said. Schaeuble said he expected budgetary policy and taxes to remain “for a long time, a matter for member states” rather than a common European economic policy. Der Spiegel reported, however, that the European Commission expected the euro zone crisis to worsen in the first few months of this year. “New and heightened tensions seem to be unavoidable in the early months of 2011,” it cited the EC paper as saying.

LAS VEGAS – A 17-year-old Nebraskan too young to cast a ballot has captured enough votes to win the Miss America crown, kickstarting her hopes of going to law school and eventually becoming a politician. “I want to be there making sure that I stand up for what’s right, stand up for integrity and honesty,” Teresa Scanlan told The Associated Press on Saturday night after becoming the first Miss America from the Cornhusker State. She won a $50,000 scholarship and a year’s reign in one of the most visible positions any young woman could seek. Scanlan captured the hearts of seven judges after a night of playing the piano, walking across a Las Vegas stage in a white gown and black bikini, and saying security trumps the public’s right to knowledge when it comes to government leaks. She said she’ll register to vote as an independent after turning 18 next month, and work toward her goals by going to law school and perhaps becoming a prosecutor, then judge. “At this point, attorneys and politicians are looked down on and have terrible reputations for being greedy and power hungry and I really think it’s important for people who have their heart and mind in the right place get into those powerful positions,” Scanlan told the AP. “When I talk to kids my age, I don’t find very many who are interested in that, because many are just
turned off to the idea,” she said. “I think it’s important that we get a lot more of my generation willing to step up and go into those positions.” Clearly, they did. “And I never passed up a cookie on my journey here,” Scanlan said. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – As the ocean floor plunges off southwestern Puerto Rico, it reveals coral reefs dotted with bright-blue sea squirts and a multitude of other organisms whose existence has given hope to scientists who strive to save the island’s threatened ecosystems. The organisms are an integral part of a group of reefs discovered to be thriving near an area where most shallow coral reefs and the fish that depend on them are in poor health overall. The reefs — at a depth of up to 500 feet (152 meters) in an area 12 miles (19 kilometers) across — were recently discovered as part of a federally funded mission to conduct research on deep-water corals, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “We stumbled across this area,” Richard Appeldoorn, a professor at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez who was involved in the mission, told The Associated Press
on Thursday. Divers enrolled in a one-year training course to depths of up to 100 feet (31 meters) noticed the thriving reefs and large predators lurking nearby, said Appeldoorn, who oversees the university’s fisheries, biology and coral reef studies program. The deep underwater landscape they encountered was populated by lettuce coral, the lace-like star coral and several species of sponges, as well as groupers, snappers and reef sharks, said Appledoorn, who is calling for the protection of the reefs and nearby shallower areas where fish spawn and later retreat to deeper waters.
“Any large fish is always neat to see, not having seen them on top of the (ocean) platform for decades, or not at all,” he said. The reef’s existence means that struggling, shallow ecosystems in the U.S. Caribbean territory may have a better-than-believed chance at survival, because fish species thriving at a deeper level can help replenish stocks in more shallow reefs, said Appeldoorn and Ernesto Diaz, director of Puerto Rico’s Coastal Zone Management Program. “It’s a pleasant surprise to know that species you thought you wouldn’t see again exist,” Diaz said. The discovery — first announced by NOAA last week — comes as officials in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands seek to create the Caribbean Regional Ocean Partnership, an endeavor that aims to better coordinate the use of coastal waters and the implementation of conservation programs.

Early T. Rex ancestor found in South America Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON – Back at the dawn of the dinosaur era, a quickmoving predator set the stage for the famous and fearsome giants that followed in its footsteps, according to new research. “It was a little dinosaur, but it carried a big evolutionary stick,” said Paul C. Sereno of the University of Chicago, a leader of the team that discovered Eodromaeus. The 4-foot-long hunter lived 230 million years ago in what is now South America and appears to be the ancestor of such creatures as Tyrannosaurus rex. “It is stunning,” Sereno said of the find, reported in Friday’s edition of the journal Science. Its features, such as a balancing tail and air pockets in the skull, show it was closely related to T. rex, he said. But while it stood on two feet like T. rex, Eodromaeus (pronounced eyo-DRO-may-us) was a lightweight at just 10- to 15-pounds. “This is a very exciting find indeed,” said Oliver W. M. Rauhut, a curator at the Bavarian State Collection for Palaeontology and Geology in Munich, Germany. “The origin and early diversification of dinosaurs is still poorly understood,” said Rauhut, who was not on the research team. Nick Longrich of the department
of geology and geophysics at Yale University agreed: “It’s very significant, because it helps give us a better idea of what the ancestor of carnivorous dinosaurs — including Tyrannosaurus, Allosaurus and the birds — would have looked like.” “A new species of early dinosaur is always an exciting find, especially when the specimens are so complete, like Eodromaeus,” added Randall B. Irmis, a professor of geology and geophysics at the University of Utah. It shares many features with an early carnivorous dinosaur named Tawa from New Mexico and reported last year by Irmis and colleagues. The similarity supports the idea that these early carnivorous dinosaurs moved between North and South America during the Late Triassic period, said Irmis, who was not part of Sereno’s research team. In addition to the discovery of Eodromaeus — which means dawn runner — the researchers proposed reclassifying a previously known dinosaur called Eoraptor. It was similar in size to Eodromaeus, but differences in the teeth indicate Eoraptor more likely was an ancestor of the giant planteating sauropod dinosaurs than the hunting theropods like T. rex with which it had been associated, according to Sereno, Paul N. Martinez of the National University of San Juan in Argentina, and their co-authors.

BERLIN – Germany’s Federal Environment Agency (UBA) on Monday advised parents of babies in families with a history of allergies not to take them to indoor swimming pools because of a risk of asthma. The agency said that the potential danger lies with nitrogen trichloride, also known as trichloramine, which can be released when chlorinated water reacts with swimmers’ urine, sweat or other organic matter. “It is not possible at this stage to say definitively whether lung tissue can be damaged in the early stages (of life) and lead to asthma, because data on the effects of trichloramine are lacking,” a statement said. “Worried parents of children less
than two years old in families with high instances of allergies are advised by the UBA to refrain from baby swimming as a precautionary measure until it is clear whether the suspicion is confirmed.” UBA President Jochen Flasbarth also called on swimmers to better adhere to basic hygiene rules and for swimming pool owners to do all they can to minimise the risk, for example by using the latest water-treatment technology. “Swimming is healthy for children and adults. In order for it to remain so, everybody should shower thoroughly before swimming in order to prevent dangers to health arising from trichloramine,” Flasbarth said. A European study published in 2006 by scientists in Belgium found the inci-
dence of asthma and wheezing among 13- and 14-year-olds can rise significantly if they use an indoor swimming pool. Research carried out in British pools in 2003 found high levels of trichloramine-triggered proteins in the blood of young swimmers and even among parents who had sat by the poolside and not swum. Asthma has been identified as a worsening health problem around the world, but the suspected causes for it are various. The finger of suspicion is pointed variously at obesity, genetic predisposition, smoking, low birthweight, air pollution, household dust mites and other allergens. Strong emotions and the weather can exacerbate the condition.

Henry Gimenez scored Bologna’s late consolation in a terrible week for the club who were hit with a threepoint deduction for failing to pay taxes and player salaries. It was vintage Inter from the off as Leonardo’s team romped to their fourth straight win under the Brazilian, who took over from the sacked Rafael Benitez at the end of December. But Leonardo downplayed his own contribution. “This is the same Inter that we’ve seen for a long time. Inter have very clear ideas, a gameplan, players in form,” he said. “We’ve managed to win difficult matches, we’ve struggled like against Napoli, we came back against Catania but today was an almost complete performance.” Inter have scored 12 goals in Leonardo’s four games but also conceded five from set-pieces. “I don’t think it’s a defect, it’s a
coincidence. We’ve conceded a few goals from set pieces.” Milito had an early chance but somehow managed to hit the woodwork from just two yards out while Bologna goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano, a reported Inter target, made excellent saves to deny Eto’o and Maicon. Inter went in front on 20 minutes as Eto’o burst past a defender and then slid a pass into Stankovic to score into an unguarded net, although TV replays suggested the Serbian may have been offside. Ten minutes later and the hosts doubled their advantage as an inchperfect pass from Thiago Motta sent Milito scampering away before teasing a defender and then finishing leftfooted across Viviano, the ball passing through the goalkeeper’s fingers. Viviano may have been hoping his potential new employers missed that error while opposing keeper Luca Castellazzi seemed determined to show he’s worth holding onto. On 34 minutes Marco Di Vaio had a great chance breaking beyond the Inter defence but Castellazzi made a splendid one-handed save from his 20-yard shot. And moments later he made a sprawling save to stop a Di Vaio freekick. Inter seemed to have taken their foot off the peddle after the break as
Bologna pushed for a route back into the game. Gimenez shot narrowly over and then Di Vaio flashed another freekick barely an inch past the post. But Bologna’s hopes of dragging themselves back into the game were killed by a wonderful goal on 63 minutes. Eto’o teased a defender out on the left, nutmegged him in passing to Milito who sent a first time backheel into the Cameroon forward’s run and Eto’o finished crisply into the bottom corner. Eto’o put the final nail in Bologna’s coffin with a sweetly-struck free-kick into the top corner. Gimenez then prodded home 13 minutes from time but the game was already over. Napoli failed to capitalise on their chance to close in on AC Milan in a dull and frustrating stalemate. The point keeps the southerners second in Serie A, but still three points behind Milan who have a game in hand away to Lecce on Sunday. Coach Walter Mazzarri insisted he was happy with his team, though. “I’m not looking at the table, we’re in competition with ourselves. We need to improve and we are improving,” he said. “We gave our all today, we were balanced without giving away anything at the back. We’re high up in the league and all we must do is continue on this path.”

Mancini said of Tevez, who stunned the club last month by demanding a transfer before withdrawing his request. “I thought it was a difficult game and I told the guys before the game that. “But I thought we were so-so in the first 20 minutes and Wolves pressed us well and we had some problems but we scored goals and had three of four other chances to score. “However, I thought we lost our concentration towards the end because we thought it was finished but it is never finished.” Mancini handed new 27 million pound signing Edin Dzeko his debut following his transfer from Wolfsburg and although he clearly lacked match sharpness, Mancini was still pleased with the Bosnian’s first afternoon out in City colours. “He played well,” he added. “It was his first game in 30 days and his first game with a new team but he played well. “He needs to improve and work hard but I think he showed he is a good player. “We are happy after the result and I am happy for our supporters because they deserve this but the season is very long and we must improve because we cannot do the same mistakes as today in the last 10 minutes.” On a different day, Wolves could
well have earned a point if not more in a spirited and hard-working performance. However, it was not to be on Saturday and they slipped back into the relegation zone as a result of this loss. “Forget the disappointment, we should have been more goals up in the first half and I?m sat here disappointed that we lost,” McCarthy said. “It’s not about what they have got - I have a good group of lads and a good team. “When we were on top we should have punished them more.” However, McCarthy was generous enough to outine that Tevez had made the difference in the encounter courtesy of his two goals and in particular his first, a wonderful dribbling effort that was fit to win any game. “It was a brilliant goal from Carlos Tevez,” he added. “People will criticise defenders but sometimes you have to say it was a great goal. “A lot of teams would have laid down and had their arse slapped at 4-1 down but we didn?t and that showed the character and spirit we have. “I don’t think we are far away from where we were last season in terms of points and games played. “We have just had a good run and we are playing well and if we get a few more players back we will be ok.”

Bulls beat Heat behind Rose with James sitting out Associated Press Writer
CHICAGO – Derrick Rose scored 34 points and Kyle Korver hit a crucial 3-pointer with 25 seconds left Saturday night as the Chicago Bulls withstood a stellar performance by Dwyane Wade to beat the Miami Heat 99-96. Miami, playing without injured LeBron James for a second straight game, lost its third straight despite a 33-point performance from Chicago native Wade, who had 12 in the fourth quarter, including three straight 3-pointers to give the Heat the lead.

The Heat’s Chris Bosh added 17, 11 in the third quarter, but hurt his ankle in the closing second of the period when he went to the floor during a scramble for the ball. He returned to the game in the fourth but played only briefly before leaving the game as Miami forged through the final period without two of its stars. Rose had 11 in the final quarter as he and Wade matched shots in a wild finish that resembled a playoff game. Carlos Boozer had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Chicago. Eddie House scored 13 for the Heat, who had to rely on its bench. It was a Rose vs. Wade showdown over the final two minutes as two of the NBA’s best players matched shots. Rose drove for a basket, Wade answered with a 3-pointer and then Rose converted a three-point play after hanging in the air for a jumper around Mario Chalmers to put the Bulls up 94-90. But Wade hit yet another 3-pointer with 1:07 to go and after a Bulls turnover, Wade connected again from long distance and the Heat had a 96-95 lead with 37 seconds remaining.
Rose missed from inside but after a missed tip, Korver came up with the loose ball and sank his 3-pointer with 25.5 seconds left to put Chicago ahead 98-96. After Wade nearly lost the ball in the lane, the Heat retrieved it and Chalmers missed a 3-pointer from the key and Chicago’s Ronnie Brewer rebounded with 4.4 seconds to go. Brewer missed the first and made the second of two free throws before Wade’s jumper was off with just under a second left. Rose sliced through four defenders for a twisting layup to cap a startling 17-0 run opening the second half that gave Bulls a 65-53 lead. He also sank back-to-back 3-pointers early in the quarter and fed Keith Bogans for another as the Bulls appeared ready to run away. Chicago had trailed by five at the half after blowing a 14-point lead as Wade scored 21 first-half points. But during the 17-point outburst, Wade — booed loudly by fans in his hometown when introduced — picked up his third and fourth fouls and suddenly the Heat were without two of their two biggest stars as he joined a
gum-chewing James on the bench. But Bosh, the third of the Heat’s Big Three, brought the Heat back with 11 points as Miami rallied to tie it at 67 late in the period. The Bulls went back up five and when Bosh went to the floor during a scramble for the ball, he stayed on the court grabbing his ankle with 30 seconds left in the third and then finally went to the bench. And with Wade, Bosh and James all on the bench, Chalmers drove for a hoop to cut it to three. James went through some pregame shooting, even a couple of dunks, to test the ankle but then sat out his second straight game. The Bulls made their pitch last summer to the two-time MVP and also met with Wade, hoping to lure the Chicago native to return home. With James out of the lineup, the fans let Wade have it during pregame introductions and continued the loud boos every time he touched the ball early in the game. James, meanwhile, sat on the end of the Heat bench watching intently and applauding his team’s effort without him.

MELBOURNE, Australia – Roger and Rafa were behaving like best mates on Rod Laver Arena — high-fiving, hugging, shaking hands and laughing at each other’s jokes on the eve of the Australian Open. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal had time for fun at the “Rally for Relief” to raise money for victims of the fatal floods in Australia’s northeastern Queensland state. It’ll be a completely different story if they’re back on the same court two weeks from Sunday. Federer is the defending champion. Nadal has won the three Grand Slam titles since and is aiming to become the first man since Laver in 1969 to win four straight majors. It’s being dubbed the “Rafa Slam.” The pair played on opposite sides of the net, and then played together against Kim Clijsters and Sam Stosur in front of a capacity crowd of 15,000 that paid to watch a host of tennis stars in the fundraiser. Novak Djokovic and Andy Roddick wore microphones and joked with the crowd, playing alongside and against the likes of Caroline
Wozniacki and Victoria Azarenka in the celebrity hit-and-giggle exhibition. Neither Federer nor Nadal wore microphones when they played a little later. It was mostly smiles, but there were glimpses of competitive intensity when they faced each other in mixed doubles. At one point, 16-time Grand Slam winner Federer used his court craft to bring Nadal to the net and then beat him with a backhand passing shot. The muscular Spaniard replied on the next point, leaping high and smashing an overhead winner beyond Federer’s reach. After each of those winners, the two smiled broadly at each other. Nadal also hammered a forehand down the line on the last point of their singles mini-match and then, shaking hands and laughing, the two standout players in men’s tennis joined forces against U.S. Open champion Clijsters and French Open finalist Stosur — Australia’s best hope in the women’s draw. Around their exhibition Sunday, Federer said Nadal has “been playing incredible.” “An incredible run through the

Al-Attiyah claims first Dakar win Volkswagen’s Nasser Al-Attiyah clinched his maiden Dakar Rally victory with the second-fastest time on the final stage, which was won by his team-mate Carlos Sainz. Al-Attiyah hit the front of the legendary event when long-time leader Sainz lost a lot of ground in sand dunes on stage eight earlier this week. Sainz tried to fight back only to suffer even worse delays with various damaged components on stages 10 and 11, pushing him back to third in an all-VW podium behind Giniel de Villiers.

Rossi buoyed by Wrooom fitness VALENTINO Rossi says he was encouraged by how well his shoulder stood up to skiing and ice racing during the Wrooom event in Italy this week, and is now more optimistic about his fitness heading into winter testing. The former MotoGP champion had surgery on his lingering shoulder injury last November, but it was discovered during the operation that the damage was more serious than
had first been thought. With his recovery still in progress, Rossi was concerned that he would be below par for both pre-season testing which commences at Sepang at the start of February - and the opening rounds of the championship. But having coped with the activities of Ducati and Ferrari’s joint media event, Rossi is feeling more upbeat about his shoulder’s condition. “Skiing helped me,” he told

Gazzetta dello Sport. “I felt the need for it after spending the winter without doing anything.” Rossi said he had planned to only briefly participate in the kart and Fiat 500 races on a frozen lake that concluded Wrooom on Friday, but instead he contested both in full, and finished second behind Fernando Alonso in the Fiat 500 contest. “At one point the vertebrae told me ‘you can’t do that’. I’ll just do two race laps and that’s it,” said Rossi. “In the car it was easier compared to the kart. The shoulder hurt a bit just on the bumps. I feel pain if I try to raise my arm, not when I drive or ride the snowboard.” The Italian now wants to make the most of the next fortnight to improve his fitness for the three-day Sepang test. “In the next two weeks I will work full-time to try to be in good form at Sepang,” Rossi said. “Strength isn’t much of a problem: what needs to improve is the arm movement, especially when I need to raise it and when I need to crouch on the bike. “I count on what the doctors have said, that the more time goes by, the quicker is the recovery. We are on schedule, in fact a bit ahead than predicted. Let’s hope it’s enough.”
Second place on today’s final 181-kilometre blast back to Buenos Aires gave Al-Attiyah a final winning margin of nearly 50 minutes over de Villiers, who was in turn half an hour clear of Sainz. X-Raid BMW driver Stephane Peterhansel had been in thick of a threeway battle with Sainz and Al-Attiyah during the first week of the event, before a series of punctures saw him lose touch with the lead fight, and eventually fall right back to finish in fourth place. His team-mate Krzysztof Holowczyc completed the final top five, ahead of VW’s fourth works driver Mark Miller, as the leading drivers cruised to the finish without incident. Meanwhile Carlos Sainz has denied that he was disappointed to only finish third in the 2011 Dakar Rally after leading the first seven stages of the event. The 2010 winner said he knew that he could not take anything for granted as he held Volkswagen team-mate Nasser Al-Attiyah and X-Raid BMW’s Stephane Peterhansel at bay during the opening week, so could not be too frustrated when he encountered problems in the rally’s second half. “Before racing a Dakar, you know it will be tough,” said Sainz. “All Dakar raids are tough. It’s like that. No, I am not disappointed. This is how the race goes. “After two tough weeks, there is nothing left to say. I gave it my very best shot.” Sainz’s rally began to go awry when he twice became stuck in sand dunes near the end of last Monday’s Antofagasta to Copiapo stage, costing him the lead. As he tried to recover, further time was lost in dunes, with navigation errors, punctures, gearbox damage and finally broken suspension. That left Sainz over an hour behind the victorious Al-Attiyah in third place, despite the former World Rally champion having won seven of the rally’s 13 stages.
