Miss South Africa crowned Miss World LONDON - Miss South Africa, 22-year-old Rolene Strauss, was crowned Miss World 2014 at the contest’s glitzy final in London on Sunday, with an estimated billion viewers watching on television around the globe.
Miss Hungary, Edina Kulcsar, was judged the runner-up and Miss United States, Elizabeth Safrit, came third in the 64th annual competition, contested by women from 121 countries. Medical student Strauss clasped her hands together in surprise and was crowned by the outgoing Miss World, Megan Young of the Philippines, to huge cheers in the ExCeL exhibition centre. “South Africa this is for you,” Strauss said. “I think I will brace myself for what’s about to happen. It’s a huge responsibility.”She told AFP she wanted to help spread education in her homeland and thereby help other people realise their dreams. “I am what I am today because of the opportunities I have received and I would love to give others the same opportunities;
educating, the opportunity to be educated, to make healthy choices and also to live their dreams,” Strauss said. And she was already getting used to the glittering crown. “I’ll definitely keep it on as long as I can but my parents are staying around here so they’ll be hugging me and I’m afraid that it might fall off,” she said. This year’s event has been rocked by the murder of Miss Honduras, 19-year-old Maria Jose Alvarado, who was shot dead along with her sister last month. Police in Honduras accuse her sister’s boyfriend of shooting them after seeing his partner dancing with another man at a party. Strauss and other contestants will travel to the crime-plagued central American nation to build a school named in the sisters’ honour.

“We hope that it will really start to impress on the people in Honduras that the violence, and hurting people like those two innocent women... maybe they can think again before they take a gun,” Miss World chairwoman Julia Morley told AFP. Sunday’s show started with a spectacular choreographed dance routine, with all the beauty queens on stage in costumes inspired by their homelands -- including Miss Bolivia in a colourful feathered headdress. While beauty remains central to the event, the women taking part are chiefly judged on their talents and involvement in good causes. Miss Malaysia won the talent competition in a live sing-off with Miss Scotland. In the Beauty with a Purpose section -- the heart of Miss World -- contestants present a charitable project they have been working on in their homeland. In this section, the judges gave equal first place to Misses Brazil, Guyana, India, Indonesia and Kenya, unable to separate them. In rounds held since the contestants arrived in London, Miss Finland topped the sporting competition; Miss United States was the multimedia winner; Miss Bosnia and Hercegovina won the top model round and Miss Sweden triumphed in beach fashion. Bill Cosby breaks silence on the media, his wife
LOS ANGELES — Bill Cosby broke his silence amid a flood of rape accusations in a very brief interview with The New York Post’s Page Six. “Let me say this. I only expect the black media to uphold the standards of excellence in journalism and when you do that you have to go in with a neutral mind,” Cosby told the publication’s Stacy Brown, who noted that he frequently writes for African-American publications. Cosby, 77, has stayed silent in light of the more than two dozen women
who have come forward to accuse him of having drugged and raped them. The alleged incidents go as far back as the 1960s. In the interview, Cosby also addressed how his wife, Camille Cosby, has weathered the allegations and ongoing public scrutiny. “Love and the strength of womanhood,” he said. “Let me say it again, love and the strength of womanhood. And, you could reverse it, the strength of womanhood and love.” Cosby declined to address the rape and sexual assault allegations, though.
According to the report, he’s been advised not to discuss the ongoing cases with the media. Brown wrote that the comedian, speaking from his Massachusetts home, sounded “upbeat” on the phone. The Page Six interview ended abruptly, though, when Cosby told the reporter that “they” don’t want him talking to the media. Representatives for Cosby did not immediately respond to the AP’s request for comment. (ap)

The pre-Christmas siege of the Lindt chocolate cafe triggered a security lockdown in an area of Australia’s biggest city that houses several government and corporate headquarters, as hundreds of armed police surrounded the site. The government said there was no clear motivation but the flag appeared to be one commonly used by jihadist groups bearing the shahada, or profession of faith in Islam. It said: “There is no God but Allah; Mohammed is his messenger.” More than 40 Australian Muslim groups jointly condemned the siege
and the use of the flag, which they said had been hijacked by “misguided individuals that represent no-one but themselves”. “We reject any attempt to take the innocent life of any human being or to instil fear and terror into their hearts,” they said in a statement. Australia has been on high alert after the government raised concerns that citizens who have fought alongside jihadists in Iraq and Syria could return home radicalised and carry out “lone wolf” attacks. convened a national security meeting to deal with the “disturbing” development. Some six hours into the siege, three men emerged from the popular cafe and ran for their lives, two from the front door and one from an emergency exit. Around an hour later two distraught women also fled. It was not clear if they escaped or were released. One was barista Elly Chen whose sister Nicole said on Facebook: “Yessss I finally see you. I’m so glad you’re safe!!!!” Among those left inside was an employee of Indian IT giant Infosys, the company said, as the leaders of India, Britain and Canada tweeted their concern. US President Barack Obama was briefed on the crisis, the White House said.
Negotiators “have had contact and continue to have contact” with the armed man holding the hostages, New South Wales state deputy police commissioner Catherine Burn said. “We do not have information to suggest that anyone is harmed at this stage,” she added. Channel Seven reporter Chris Reason, whose newsroom is opposite the cafe, tweeted: “From inside Martin Place newsroom, we’ve counted around 15 hostages -- not 50 -- mix of women, men, young, old - but no children.” Reason added: “We can see gunman is rotating hostages, forcing them to stand against windows, sometimes 2 hours at a time.” The hostage-taker, reportedly armed with a shotgun, made a se-
ries of demands through Australian media, but they were retracted after police requested they not be made public. Journalist Chris Kenny, who was in the Lindt cafe just before the siege began, said he understood the automatic glass sliding doors had been disabled. He added that a woman who tried to get in as he was leaving saw someone with a weapon who told those inside “to put up their hands”. The scene of the drama, Martin Place, is Sydney’s financial centre and houses several prominent buildings, including the New South Wales parliament, the US consulate, the country’s central bank and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

Thousands Tabanan residents don’t have toilet facilities or about 79.48 percent. Meanwhile, the JSSP access reached 2,801 households and shared toilet access reached 18,800 households. The MDG target was to achieve the JSP access of 100 percent, which meant that the tasks of Tabanan County remained about 20 percent. In the STBM program to stop defecating out of place, the Tabanan Health Agency applied triggering method. Here, the residents were invited directly to make a field visit in order to see the environmental condition when defecating out of place. After seeing it at first hand, they were expected to increase shame and awareness of the hazards that threatened when defecating out of place. According to Mulyadi, one of the hazards lurking in such a behavior was a bacterial infection by E. coli that could cause diarrhea. “Human feces are made up of many diseases, where one of them is the E. coli. When defecating out of place, the bacteria can spread to the source of water either through water catchment in the ground or river,” said Mulyadi. Through the triggering method, the public would have the awareness to build toilet with their own effort either by sharing or individually. According to Mulyadi, for the

A visitor declared positive to narcotics p.m. targeted three entertainment venues around Lodtunduh village, Ubud, namely the Café Santai, Café Santai Lendani and Café Manis. he explained. After that, police made no arrest because it was not found any evidence of drug in the body of the perpetrator. TABANAN - Eliminating the behavior rate of defecating out of place is one of the requirements in attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). To that end, the achievement of toilet facility is expected to reach 100 percent in 2015. Until November 2014, Tabanan County recorded that 2,935 households still have the behavior of defecating out of place or do not have toilet facilities. It has reduced from 3,567 households. The number indicates if the behavior of defecating out of place remains rampant spreading across the subdistricts of Penebel amounting to 1,172 households, Selemadeg (612 households), East Selemadeg (287 households), Tabanan (252 households), Pupuan (192 households), Kerambitan (159 households), Baturiti (106 households), Marga (79 households) and Kediri (76 households). As for the West Selemadeg subdistrict, all households have owned permanent healthy toilet (JSP), semi-permanent healthy toilet (JSSP) or shared toilet. The Head of Tabanan Health Agency, Nyoman Suratmika, accompanied by the Environmental Sanitation officer, Made Mulyadi, explained that to achieve the MDG target, the government had rolled out a program known as the communitybased total sanitation (STBM). Five things wanted to be achieved by the STBM, where one of which was the termination of defecating out of place. Based on the data, the achievement of JSP access in Tabanan reached 102,687 households,

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

HONOLULU — A new study estimates nearly 270,000 tons of plastic is floating in the world’s oceans. That’s enough to fill more than 38,500 garbage trucks. The plastic is broken up into more than 5 trillion pieces, said the study published Wednesday in the scientific journal PLOS ONE. The paper is the latest in a nascent field where scientists are trying to better understand how much of the synthetic material is entering the oceans and how it’s affecting fish, seabirds and the larger marine ecosystem. The study’s lead author is Markus Eriksen of the 5 Gyres Institute, an organization that aims to reduce plastic in the oceans. To gather data, researchers dragged a fine mesh net at the sea surface to gather small pieces. Observers on boats counted larger items. They used computer models to calculate estimates for tracts of ocean not surveyed. The study only measured plastic floating at the surface. Plastic on the ocean floor wasn’t included.
Bits greater than about 8 inches (20 centimeters) accounted for threequarters of the plastic that the research estimated is in the ocean. Kara Lavender Law of the Sea Education Association in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, who wasn’t involved in the study, said the researchers gathered data in areas where scientists currently don’t have measurements for floating plastic debris, including the Indian Ocean, the Southern Ocean near Antarctica and the South Atlantic. In addition, the study’s estimate for tiny plastic bits less than one-fifth of an inch — about 35,540 tons — is comparable to an earlier study by researchers in Spain who used different methodology, Law said. That study estimated there was 7,000 to 35,000 tons of plastics this size floating in the ocean. It’s encouraging that two differ-
ent approaches came up with such similar answers, given how difficult it is to measure plastic in the ocean, she said. Studying the amount of plastic in the ocean will help scientists understand how the material will affect the environment and potentially the food chain. For example, Law said, we might eat tuna that has ingested another fish that has eaten plastic that has in turn eaten another fish with plastic. These plastics could potentially have toxic chemicals. “Am I being poisoned by eating the fish on my plate?” she asked. “We have very little knowledge of the chain of events that could lead to that. But it’s a plausible scenario that plastic ingested at lower levels of the food web could have consequences at higher levels of the food chain.” (ap)
GENEVA - Europe’s physics lab CERN said Friday it was on schedule to fire up the world’s biggest particle smasher again early next year, with almost double the energy of its previous run. CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) went offline in February 2013 for an 18-month overhaul after identifying what is believed to be the Higgs boson, the long-sought maker of mass theorised in the 1960s. The giant lab, housed in a 27-kilometre (17-mile) tunnel straddling the French-Swiss border, flushed out the so-called “God particle” by crashing proton beams at velocities near the speed of light. The LHC is scheduled to reopen next March for a second three-year run, and the makeover is expected
to nearly double the energy levels achieved in its collisions. “With this new energy level, the LHC will open new horizons for physics and for future discoveries,” CERN Director General Rolf Heuer said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to seeing what nature has in store for us,” he added. Earlier this week a test had been conducted in one eighth of the circular lab, in which the magnets for the first time were successfully powered to the level needed for beams to reach 6.5 teraelectronvolts (TeV) -- the operating energy for the second run, CERN said. “The goal for 2015 will be to run with two proton beams in order to produce 13 TeV collisions, an energy never achieved by any accelerator in the past,” it said.
Pittsburgh firm offering ‘moon mail’ delivery
PITTSBURGH — An outerspace delivery firm that is working with Carnegie Mellon University to put a privately owned lunar rover on the moon is offering to “mail” personal keepsakes to the moon as a way to help fund the partnership’s rocket launch. Astrobotic Technology and Carnegie Mellon are trying to get their lunar rover to the moon to win $20 million in an international contest sponsored by Google to promote privately funded lunar exploration. Astrobotic, a spin-off company of CMU, has leased a rocket built by a private California firm, Space X, to carry the lunar rover and is offering the MoonMail service to help pay for the trip. On its website, Space X advertises a moon rocket lease for $61 million, with a 10 percent discount for any of the groups competing in the Google competition. O n T h u r s d a y, A s t r o b o t i c launched moonmail.co, a website where people can sign up to send their keepsakes in tiny MoonMail packages to the moon, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. The cargo is regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration and the U.S. Department of Defense. As such, Astrobotic expects people will send
non-volatile items like wedding rings, locks of hair or other tiny heirlooms. A keepsake mailer — a hexagonal capsule ½-inch wide by 1/8-inch high — sells for $460. The largest — a 1-inch by 2-inch hexagonal — sells for $25,800. “This allows people around the world to have direct participation in missions to the moon,” Astrobotic chief executive officer John Thornton said. The rover, nicknamed Andy, is a solar-powered, knee-high, four-wheeled robot. Under terms of Google’s LunarX prize, the winning rover must travel about a third of a mile on the lunar surface by the end of 2015. Governor urged to bring back manuscripts of Gedong Kertya
SINGARAJA - Gedong Kertya Singaraja is known as a library established during the era of Dutch administration. The building having the address on Jalan Veteran, Singaraja, retains a collection of palmleaf manuscripts written by the intellectuals during historical period. The manuscripts contain valuable guidance in all aspects of life. After the colonial period ended and the nation gained its independence, the library of Gedong Kertya remains sustainable and is managed by a local Technical Implementation Unit (UPTD) of Buleleng County. The well-maintained palm-leaf manuscript collection, especially its presence, has begun to be disturbed from some years ago. Bali government through the Documentation Center took over the palm-leaf collection stored at Gedong Kertya, Singaraja. Initially, the Bali Documentation Center took over some collections to be copied as preservation effort from extinction. However, different fact occurred, where the Bali Documentation Center replaced the original palm-leaf manuscript collection with the copied version stored at Gedong Kertya. By all means, this situation made Buleleng residents upset and much deplored the attitude of the Bali Documentation Center that seemed to ‘plunder’ the historical wealth stored at Gedong Kertya, Singaraja. Chronologically, the takeover of the palm-leaf manuscript collection at Gedong Kertya, Singaraja, was described by some public figures attending the yearend discussion entitled Enjok Enjing Kaje Kelod initiated by the Buleleng Journalists Community (KJB) on Friday (Dec 12) in the building of MR. I Gusti Ketut Pudja at the former Buleleng Harbor. Kadek Kariana from Jalan Gajah Mada, Singaraja, stated the ‘looting’ of palm-leaf manuscript collection belonging to Gedong Kertya, Singaraja, by the Bali Documentation Center was considered an attitude of wishing to take charge of the historical wealth stored in Buleleng. If the reason of the takeover was for preservation, it was still considered acceptable. But, what made him upset was that after the duplication of the palm-leaf collection completed, the Bali Documentation Center even returned the copied version of the palm-leaf manuscripts. “Why are all the historical assets of Buleleng looted? They have always been kept at Gedong Kertya from time immemorial why it should be taken over to Southern Bali. Actually, the Buleleng government including local community is able to preserve the historical heritage because it is the first historical heritage of Buleleng,” he said.
Against such condition, the former commissioner of the Buleleng Electoral Commission urged the governor of Bali to instruct the Bali Documentation Center to bring back the original collection of the palm-leaf manuscripts to their place of origin (Gedong Kertya). Regarding the maintenance and preservation, local government was believed to have a commitment for that including the utilization as a source of knowledge or as a facility to support the education for students. “Simply bring back to their place of origin, so that they can be used as a source of knowledge for students in our region,” he affirmed. Similar opinion was disclosed by a member of the Student Executive Board (BEM) of the State Hindu Dharma Institute (IHDN) Denpasar of Singaraja Campus, Ketut Budiarta. He also hoped that all the palm-leaf manuscripts of Gedong Kertya could be immediately returned to its original place. When stored at different location, it would make difficult for students in Northern Bali that would utilize the collection of Gedong Kertya for the needs of research. “We very much need them and those palm-leaf manuscripts must be stored at Gedong Kertya. If it is currently taken over by Bali government, we have difficulty because the collection is stored at different place,” he said. Responding to the suggestions, the Bureau Chief of Economic and Development Affairs of the Bali Regional Secretariat, Gede Suarjana, representing the governor of Bali could not give adequate responses to the insistence of the residents so as the Bali Documentation Center could return the palm-leaf manuscript collection to Gedong Kertya. He only answered the request of residents would be reported to his leadership. “As far as we know, the palm-leaf manuscripts were borrowed to be copied as an attempt for preservation of the historical heritage. He added that population of cattle also showed a decrease from the previous year. This year it only reached 78,000 heads, whereas in 2013 already reached 81,000. “The population of cattle has decreased and it means that the public interest to raise cattle Bali has diminished, too,” he said. As a matter of fact, the cattle breeding carried out by
Bangli community should have a master plan. So far, people only raised male cattle focused on the process of fattening, not on breeding. Of the total number of cattle, 65 percent was male and 35 percent was female. This number spread across all the subdistricts in Bangli County. Parwata added that for the sustainability of Bali cattle, farmers should switch to female cows in order to proliferate. By this attempt, the number of Bali cattle would continue to increase. “People should breed more female cows because they will produce offspring. By that way, the existence of Bali cattle will continue,” he explained. Regarding the effort to address the less maximal potential of livestock, Parwata claimed to have provided the assistance of cows for some communities. “We have attempted to provide cow assistance for some breeders as incentive so that they are motivated to preserve female cows,” he said. A motorcycle gang robs and stabs a student
DENPASAR - Before the stabbing case against a project worker named Ahmad Zainul, 19, on Jalan Raya Puputan, Renon, East Denpasar, could be revealed, another case involving a motorcycle gang happened again. Even, it was more brutal. A student, Komang Edi Wijaya, 16, was robbed and stabbed by a motorcycle gang on Jalan Tukad Balian, right in front of Victory Futsal, South Denpasar, Saturday (Dec 13). In addition to losing a helmet, the victim also suffered stabbing wounds in the right chest. According to Chief of South Denpasar Police, Nanang Prihasmoko, Sunday (Dec 14), the results of examination against witnesses, the incident occurred on Saturday around 11:00 p.m. Initially the victim living on Jalan Gunung Batur Gang Tekukur, Denpasar rode with Kadek Darmawan, 17, with the status as student on Jalan Tukad Balian, Renon. At that time, they came from Kuta
and wanted to go home. They had dropped by at a mini market on Jalan Tukad Balian to buy a drink. After that, both teenagers resumed their journey. Upon arrival at the scene, they were grazed by the motorcycle gang who was still teenager. However, they ignored it and continued the journey to their home. Unfortunately, the gang was increasingly violent. They
directly confronted the victim and immediately ganged up on them. Not only that, the victim’s helmet was taken away. Their action was increasingly brutal, and stabbed the victim on chest with a knife. The victim was unable to fight back because the motorcycle gang was with many people. After seeing the victim moaning in pain due to stabbing wound on chest, the perpetrators fled and took away a beige Scoopy helmet. “We are still investigating this case, especially in tracking the perpetrators. Our personnel have been deployed to hunt down the perpetrators,” added the police chief. Keep in mind, a project worker, Ahmad Zainul, 19, from Madura,
East Java, was beaten and stabbed several times by motorcycle gang members on Jalan Raya Puputan, Renon, East Denpasar. As a result, the victim suffered stabbing wounds on right and left abdomen, back and left arm. The case was dealt with by East Denpasar Police and to date it had not been revealed. Earlier, they chanted “We will be back” and called on Hong Kong’s unpopular Beijingbacked leader, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, to step down. Supporters shouted encouragement from the sidewalk. By midday, the road had been returned to traffic. The police operation came after authorities on Thursday shut down the protesters’ main camp near the heart of Hong Kong’s financial district and arrested 249 people who refused to leave. One last pocket of protesters camped out on a courtyard underneath the city’s legislature, near the main site, also cleared out voluntarily Monday afternoon. Another protest camp, in the Mong Kok district, was shut down late last month by police.
The Causeway Bay protesters had managed to cling on for 79 days, but after the other two sites were cleared, they became resigned to eventually being removed as well. CIA report revives legal debate on interrogation
WASHINGTON — When the CIA sought permission to use harsh interrogation methods on a captured al-Qaida operative, the response from Bush administration lawyers was encouraging, even clinical. In one of several memos forming the legal underpinnings for brutal interrogation techniques, the CIA was told that Abu Zubaydah could lawfully be placed in a box with an insect, kept awake for days at a time and slapped multiple times in the face. Waterboarding, too, was acceptable because it did not cause the lengthy mental anguish needed to meet the legal standard of torture, the 2002 Justice Department memo says. The release last week of a Senate report cataloging years of such interrogation tactics has revived debate about legal opinions since discredited and withdrawn and about the decision to not prosecute the program’s architects or officers who used the methods. Civil rights groups in the United States and abroad are renewing calls to prosecute those who relied on techniques that President Barack Obama has called torture. “How can we seriously use the phrase ‘rule of law’ if crimes of this magnitude go uninvestigated and unprosecuted?” said Jameel Jaffer, the American Civil Liberties Union’s deputy legal director. The U.S. Justice Department, which spent years looking into
the matter, says it lacks sufficient evidence to convict anyone and found no new information in the report. It also is far from clear that any international case could be brought. Justice Department officials said they will not revisit their 2012 decision to close the investigation, citing among other challenges the passage of time and the difficulty of proving beyond a reasonable doubt that crimes were committed, especially in light of government memos that gave interrogators extraordinary latitude. “Our inquiry was limited to a determination of whether prosecutable offenses were committed. Importantly, our investigation was not intended to answer the broader questions regarding the propriety of the examined conduct,” the department said in a statement after the Senate report was released. That conclusion followed an investigation led by special prosecutor John Durham that began in 2009 as an outgrowth of a probe into the destruction of videotapes of CIA interrogation tactics. The inquiry into interrogation tactics came amid the release of an internal CIA inspector general’s report that said CIA interrogators once threatened to kill the children of a Sept. 11, 2001 attacks suspect and suggested that another suspected terrorist would be forced to watch his mother being sexually assaulted.(ap)

In fact, it’s even better than that: the cut will not show up in bigger fiscal deficits and hence future liabilities of the energy users. Instead, Russia and other energy producers will have to foot the bill.” The danger is what costs that could levy from energy producers. Malaysia Airlines shares suspended as part of rescue plan
KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia Airlines suspended its shares from the country’s stock exchange Monday under a government rescue plan for the flag carrier which is fighting for survival after losing two planes this year. The airline, whose already loss-making operations took a further beating after the two tragedies, said in a notice to the Kuala Lumpur stock exchange last week that trading would be suspended from Monday. A Malaysia Airlines spokesperson confirmed the stock ceased trading. Under a plan announced in August, state investment fund Khazanah Nasional, which already owned around 70 percent of the carrier, is acquiring all remaining shares, de-listing the stock, and taking the company private to deal with its problems. Malaysia Airlines has chalked up losses for years even before this year’s disasters involving flights MH370 and MH17, in which a total of 537 lives were lost. Khazanah’s plans include pumping $1.73 billion into the airline, cutting 6,000 jobs -- or 30 percent of its workforce -- and trimming its route network. Earlier this month it tapped the head of Irish flag carrier Aer Lingus, Christoph Mueller, to take over in the middle of next year as CEO. Mueller, who is German, initiated an Aer Lingus turnaround strategy that involved hefty job cuts. The increasing crossing activities at Kusamba did not only occur at one port at Tribuana, but also occurred at the other traditional ports like at the Kampong Kusamba and Bias Kusamba hamlet. Various cultural activities will jazz up each the festivity. Surely, the moment is going to result in a very impressive experience. Galungan falls on Buda Kliwon Dungulan (Wednesday, Mar 27) as a day to commemorate the creation of universe along with its contents as well as the victory of dharma against adharma. On this day, the Hindus make offerings presented to Supreme God along with his manifestation as an expression of gratitude upon his grace. Series of the festivities has been begun on Tumpek Uduh or Tumpek Pengatag, Saturday, last 13 December. At that time, the ritual is given to fruit trees that will be used as a means of oblation ingredient for the festivity coming every 210 days. However, the vibrant celebration starts on Anggara Wage Dungulan (Tuesday) 16 December or a day before Galungan characterized by the installation of penjor. Penjor is made from bamboo pole embellished with young coconut leaves. The upper edge curves down as a symbol of mountain. Various agricultural products such as rice, coconut, banana and other fruits are used to adorn the penjor. A piece of yellow-white fabric completed with Omkara sacred script makes it unique. Various leaves are used to embellish such as cabbage tree and banyan. After the penjor is installed at the entrance to the house, the upper end should be facing the middle of
road. Having installed a bamboo shrine near the penjor, it is then equipped with lamak, sampyan and other types of leaf oblation paraphernalia. At the upper end of penjor is festooned with a piece of white cloth symbolizing purity. Penjor signifies an offering of gratitude to God for all the blessing bestowed. On Kuningan Day, the offerings are completed with endongan, tamiang and kolem. SEOUL, South Korea — Nut rage imploded the career of a Korean Air Lines executive and embarrassed her family and country. Now South Korean retailers are experiencing the unexpected upside: a boom in sales of macadamias. The flavorful macadamia nut was unfamiliar to many South Koreans until Cho Hyun-ah, the daughter of Korean Air’s chairman, ordered a flight attendant off a Dec. 5 flight from New York City after she was served them in a bag, instead of on a plate. She resigned from executive roles including head of cabin service last week amid a storm of criticism about the tantrum that forced the flight to return to the gate. But macadamias are now a household name in South Korea and with curiosity about their taste piqued, sales are booming. Auction, a South Korean unit of eBay and South Korea’s secondlargest e-commerce website, said Monday that sales of macadamias surged nearly 12-fold during the previous five days without any promotions. It said macadamias
previously made up 5 percent of its nut sales but were now accounting for almost half. South Korea’s largest online shopping retailer, Gmarket, also owned by eBay, said Macadamia nut sales jumped 20 times during the six days to Sunday compared with the previous week. The website of e-commerce firm Coupang showed Mauna Loa macadamia nuts had sold out, with about 100 users asking on the comments section for the product to be quickly restocked. One Coupang user asked if Mauna Loa macadamia nuts are the
same brand that delayed the Korean Air flight. Another person who identified themselves as a seller replied that they probably are because orders have shot up. One user parodied Cho’s behavior on the plane, leaving a comment that asked the seller to ship the macadamia nuts on plate, or get out. Cho’s over-mighty behavior hogged headlines around the world and spawned various parodies on the Internet. Cho made a publicly apology last week. Her father also publicly apologized and said he should have raised her better.
The drama began around 9:45 a.m. in Martin Place, a plaza in the heart of the city’s financial and shopping district that is packed with holiday shoppers this time of year. Many of those inside the cafe would have been taken hostage as they stopped in for their morning coffees. INDONESIA Rupiah weakest since Asian financial crisis JAKARTA - The Indonesian rupiah Monday sank to its lowest level against the dollar since the Asian financial crisis 16 years ago, as emerging markets are hit hard by signs of recovery in the US. The unit was down 1.8 percent in early afternoon trade, at 12,690 to the dollar, its lowest level since August 1998, around the time Southeast Asia’s biggest economy was devastated by serious financial turmoil. In earlier trade, it touched 12,699 to the dollar. Like other emerging market currencies, the rupiah has been hit by signs of recovery in the American economy that has led to expectations the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates next year. A strengthening US economy
has led investors to pull out of riskier emerging markets, where they headed for bigger returns in recent years when Western countries were in the doldrums, and direct their money back towards developed markets. Analysts also said that investors had been withdrawing funds from Indonesian government bonds in December, which was starting to have a knock-on effect on the rupiah. “There appears to be another bout of investor risk aversion on the global stage,” said Wellian Wiranto,
an economist from Singapore-based OCBC Bank. The Jakarta benchmark stock market was also down 0.9 percent in early afternoon trade. The sea is Indonesia’s future: President KOTABARU, South Kalimantan - The sea will play an increasingly important role in the future of Indonesia, and so, the government will continue to take various steps to enforce its maritime sovereignty, according to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). “We have to ensure that our future is the sea. Therefore, we have to enforce maritime sovereignty in accordance with the concept of global maritime axis,” President Jokowi noted during the commemoration of National Integrity Day on Monday. The head of state remarked that the National Integrity Day, known as Nusantara Day, will continue to serve as a reminder to the public that Indonesia is a maritime nation with more than 17 thousand islands. The inception of Nusantara Day dates back to a declaration conveyed by former Indonesian prime minister Djuanda on Dec 13, 1957, which was called as the “Juanda Declaration.” It was a declaration stating to the world that Indonesia is the sea, including the sea around, between, and within the Indonesian archipelago into a single homeland
territorial integrity. The declaration was regarded as the country’s cornerstone to become an archipelagic nation and was eventually used as a concept to establish the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. The Nusantara Day has been commemorated since 1999 with official recognition being imprinted in Presidential Decree No. 126/2001. President Jokowi emphasized that the Indonesian people must imbibe the spirit of Nusantara Day in order to maintain the nation’s unity and to avoid disintegration. This year’s commemoration is also aimed at encouraging people in a bid to make the country a better place in the future. Landslide death toll rises to 39 JEMBLUNG, Central Java - Indonesian rescuers dug through mud with their bare hands and shovels for a third day Monday in the hunt for scores of people still missing after a landslide engulfed a village, as the death toll rose to 39. Sixty-nine people are still unaccounted for after heavy rain triggered the landslide that swallowed up houses in Jemblung village on Java island late Friday, with officials saying the chances of finding anyone alive are now slim. More than 1,000 rescuers, including police and soldiers, have been digging through huge mounds of red mud that cascaded onto the village, which lies in a valley surrounded by hills, with a sound that witnesses said was like thunder. “We hope and pray that we can rescue some of the missing but the chances are slim,” local search and rescue chief Agus Haryono told AFP. National disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that bulldozers and excavators were still trying to clear a huge pile of fallen trees and earth blocking the main road to the site, in the hope of speeding up the rescue effort. “Rescuers retrieved more bodies from the mud, which took the death toll to 39 people,” he told AFP, adding that 69 people remain missing. Initial rescue efforts were hampered by persistent heavy downpours but the weather has cleared since Sunday. Landslides triggered by heavy rains and floods are common in tropical Indonesia during the rainy season. The national disaster agency estimates around half the country’s population of 250 million lives in areas prone to slippages. Kimi Raikkonen says he expected to endure a difficult 2014 Formula 1 season after rejoining Ferrari from Lotus. The Finn failed to finish on the podium for the first time since his debut F1 campaign in 2001, and his 12th place in the championship was the lowest finish of his career. Kimi Raikkonen’s terrible year analysed Raikkonen, a racewinner with Lotus in 2012 and ‘13, said it was no surprise to him that he faced a tough adjustment period back at Ferrari after four years away. “Obviously with the new team I expected it to be difficult because of how things work,” said Raikkonen, who will work with a different race engineer in 2015. “If the car doesn’t suit you, and [I’ve had] similar situations before with Ferrari, it’s not easy to change things when certain things
are not right for you. “Over the year they have a clear plan what we have to improve to get back where Ferrari should be. “I feel all the areas are going to make a big, big improvement. “It’s unfortunate we’ve had this kind of year because it’s not good for me, Ferrari or fans of Ferrari, but that’s part of the game. “It’s not the first time I’ve had difficulties - you just have to take the good out of them and make sure it does not happen for the future.” The 2007 world champion said the bad season on his side was less important as the Ferrari had not been quick enough to fight for the title anyway. “I have had difficult seasons before - it doesn’t matter, it is what it is,” he added. “When you’re not fighting for the championship it makes no difference, it was just overall difficult all the time.”
Bryant passes Jordan for 3rd on scoring list
MINNEAPOLIS — Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant passed Michael Jordan for third on the NBA’s career scoring list Sunday in a 100-94 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Bryant entered the game needing nine points to pass the icon with whom he is often compared. He got the mark with two free throws with 5:24 to play in the second quarter. “I’m just honored to be here, man, to still be playing,” Bryant said. “I appreciate being able to play this long. Careers normally don’t last this long. I really appreciate the opportunity to still be out there playing and performing and doing what I do.” Now only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone have scored more points than Bryant. “I congratulate Kobe on reaching this milestone,” Jordan, the owner of the Charlotte Hornets, said in a statement released to The Associated Press. “He’s obviously a great player, with a strong work ethic and has an equally strong passion for the game of basketball. I’ve enjoyed watching his game evolve over the years, and I look forward to seeing what he accomplishes next.” Bryant didn’t break a record Sunday night. Abdul-Jabbar is still more than 6,000 points ahead of him and in no danger of being caught. But moving past Jordan was cause for celebration.

Kimi Raikkonen says he expected to endure a difficult 2014 Formula 1 season after rejoining Ferrari from Lotus. The Finn failed to finish on the podium for the first time since his debut F1 campaign in 2001, and his 12th place in the championship was the lowest finish of his career. Kimi Raikkonen’s terrible year analysed Raikkonen, a racewinner with Lotus in 2012 and ‘13, said it was no surprise to him that he faced a tough adjustment period back at Ferrari after four years away. “Obviously with the new team I expected it to be difficult because of how things work,” said Raikkonen, who will work with a different race engineer in 2015. “If the car doesn’t suit you, and [I’ve had] similar situations before with Ferrari, it’s not easy to change things when certain things
are not right for you. “Over the year they have a clear plan what we have to improve to get back where Ferrari should be. “I feel all the areas are going to make a big, big improvement. “It’s unfortunate we’ve had this kind of year because it’s not good for me, Ferrari or fans of Ferrari, but that’s part of the game. “It’s not the first time I’ve had difficulties - you just have to take the good out of them and make sure it does not happen for the future.” The 2007 world champion said the bad season on his side was less important as the Ferrari had not been quick enough to fight for the title anyway. “I have had difficult seasons before - it doesn’t matter, it is what it is,” he added. “When you’re not fighting for the championship it makes no difference, it was just overall difficult all the time.”

MINNEAPOLIS — Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant passed Michael Jordan for third on the NBA’s career scoring list Sunday in a 100-94 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Bryant entered the game needing nine points to pass the icon with whom he is often compared. He got the mark with two free throws with 5:24 to play in the second quarter. “I’m just honored to be here, man, to still be playing,” Bryant said. “I appreciate being able to play this long. Careers normally don’t last this long. I really appreciate the opportunity to still be out there playing and performing and doing what I do.” Now only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone have scored more points than Bryant. “I congratulate Kobe on reaching this milestone,” Jordan, the owner of the Charlotte Hornets, said in a statement released to The Associated Press. “He’s obviously a great player, with a strong work ethic and has an equally strong passion for the game of basketball. I’ve enjoyed watching his game evolve over the years, and I look forward to seeing what he accomplishes next.” Bryant didn’t break a record Sunday night. SEOUL, South Korea — Nut rage imploded the career of a Korean Air Lines executive and embarrassed her family and country. Now South Korean retailers are experiencing the unexpected upside: a boom in sales of macadamias. The flavorful macadamia nut was unfamiliar to many South Koreans until Cho Hyun-ah, the daughter of Korean Air’s chairman, ordered a flight attendant off a Dec. 5 flight from New York City after she was served them in a bag, instead of on a plate. She resigned from executive roles including head of cabin service last week amid a storm of criticism about the tantrum that forced the flight to return to the gate. But macadamias are now a household name in South Korea and with curiosity about their taste piqued, sales are booming. Auction, a South Korean unit of eBay and South Korea’s secondlargest e-commerce website, said Monday that sales of macadamias surged nearly 12-fold during the previous five days without any promotions. It said macadamias
previously made up 5 percent of its nut sales but were now accounting for almost half. South Korea’s largest online shopping retailer, Gmarket, also owned by eBay, said Macadamia nut sales jumped 20 times during the six days to Sunday compared with the previous week. The website of e-commerce firm Coupang showed Mauna Loa macadamia nuts had sold out, with about 100 users asking on the comments section for the product to be quickly restocked. One Coupang user asked if Mauna Loa macadamia nuts are the
same brand that delayed the Korean Air flight. Another person who identified themselves as a seller replied that they probably are because orders have shot up. One user parodied Cho’s behavior on the plane, leaving a comment that asked the seller to ship the macadamia nuts on plate, or get out. Cho’s over-mighty behavior hogged headlines around the world and spawned various parodies on the Internet. Cho made a publicly apology last week. Her father also publicly apologized and said he should have raised her better.
The drama began around 9:45 a.m. in Martin Place, a plaza in the heart of the city’s financial and shopping district that is packed with holiday shoppers this time of year. Many of those inside the cafe would have been taken hostage as they stopped in for their morning coffees. INDONESIA Rupiah weakest since Asian financial crisis JAKARTA - The Indonesian rupiah Monday sank to its lowest level against the dollar since the Asian financial crisis 16 years ago, as emerging markets are hit hard by signs of recovery in the US. The unit was down 1.8 percent in early afternoon trade, at 12,690 to the dollar, its lowest level since August 1998, around the time Southeast Asia’s biggest economy was devastated by serious financial turmoil. In earlier trade, it touched 12,699 to the dollar. Like other emerging market currencies, the rupiah has been hit by signs of recovery in the American economy that has led to expectations the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates next year. A strengthening US economy
has led investors to pull out of riskier emerging markets, where they headed for bigger returns in recent years when Western countries were in the doldrums, and direct their money back towards developed markets. Analysts also said that investors had been withdrawing funds from Indonesian government bonds in December, which was starting to have a knock-on effect on the rupiah. “There appears to be another bout of investor risk aversion on the global stage,” said Wellian Wiranto,
an economist from Singapore-based OCBC Bank. The Jakarta benchmark stock market was also down 0.9 percent in early afternoon trade. The sea is Indonesia’s future: President KOTABARU, South Kalimantan - The sea will play an increasingly important role in the future of Indonesia, and so, the government will continue to take various steps to enforce its maritime sovereignty, according to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). “We have to ensure that our future is the sea. Therefore, we have to enforce maritime sovereignty in accordance with the concept of global maritime axis,” President Jokowi noted during the commemoration of National Integrity Day on Monday. The head of state remarked that the National Integrity Day, known as Nusantara Day, will continue to serve as a reminder to the public that Indonesia is a maritime nation with more than 17 thousand islands. The inception of Nusantara Day dates back to a declaration conveyed by former Indonesian prime minister Djuanda on Dec 13, 1957, which was called as the “Juanda Declaration.” It was a declaration stating to the world that Indonesia is the sea, including the sea around, between, and within the Indonesian archipelago into a single homeland
territorial integrity. The declaration was regarded as the country’s cornerstone to become an archipelagic nation and was eventually used as a concept to establish the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. The Nusantara Day has been commemorated since 1999 with official recognition being imprinted in Presidential Decree No. 126/2001. President Jokowi emphasized that the Indonesian people must imbibe the spirit of Nusantara Day in order to maintain the nation’s unity and to avoid disintegration. This year’s commemoration is also aimed at encouraging people in a bid to make the country a better place in the future. Landslide death toll rises to 39 JEMBLUNG, Central Java - Indonesian rescuers dug through mud with their bare hands and shovels for a third day Monday in the hunt for scores of people still missing after a landslide engulfed a village, as the death toll rose to 39. Sixty-nine people are still unaccounted for after heavy rain triggered the landslide that swallowed up houses in Jemblung village on Java island late Friday, with officials saying the chances of finding anyone alive are now slim. More than 1,000 rescuers, including police and soldiers, have been digging through huge mounds of red mud that cascaded onto the village, which lies in a valley surrounded by hills, with a sound that witnesses said was like thunder. “We hope and pray that we can rescue some of the missing but the chances are slim,” local search and rescue chief Agus Haryono told AFP. National disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that bulldozers and excavators were still trying to clear a huge pile of fallen trees and earth blocking the main road to the site, in the hope of speeding up the rescue effort. “Rescuers retrieved more bodies from the mud, which took the death toll to 39 people,” he told AFP, adding that 69 people remain missing. Initial rescue efforts were hampered by persistent heavy downpours but the weather has cleared since Sunday. Landslides triggered by heavy rains and floods are common in tropical Indonesia during the rainy season. In fact, it’s even better than that: the cut will not show up in bigger fiscal deficits and hence future liabilities of the energy users. Instead, Russia and other energy producers will have to foot the bill.” The danger is what costs that could levy from energy producers. Malaysia Airlines shares suspended as part of rescue plan
KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia Airlines suspended its shares from the country’s stock exchange Monday under a government rescue plan for the flag carrier which is fighting for survival after losing two planes this year. The airline, whose already loss-making operations took a further beating after the two tragedies, said in a notice to the Kuala Lumpur stock exchange last week that trading would be suspended from Monday. A Malaysia Airlines spokesperson confirmed the stock ceased trading. Under a plan announced in August, state investment fund Khazanah Nasional, which already owned around 70 percent of the carrier, is acquiring all remaining shares, de-listing the stock, and taking the company private to deal with its problems. Malaysia Airlines has chalked up losses for years even before this year’s disasters involving flights MH370 and MH17, in which a total of 537 lives were lost. Khazanah’s plans include pumping $1.73 billion into the airline, cutting 6,000 jobs -- or 30 percent of its workforce -- and trimming its route network. Earlier this month it tapped the head of Irish flag carrier Aer Lingus, Christoph Mueller, to take over in the middle of next year as CEO. Mueller, who is German, initiated an Aer Lingus turnaround strategy that involved hefty job cuts. Malaysia Airlines has struggled for years, with analysts blaming poor management, unwise business decisions and government meddling. Galungan Arrives, Grace with Penjor If you’re traveling in Bali in late March and early April 2013, you will be a lucky person because you will encounter that Balinese Hindu community is celebrating two holidays namely Galungan and Kuningan. Various cultural activities will jazz up each the festivity. Surely, the moment is going to result in a very impressive experience. Galungan falls on Buda Kliwon Dungulan (Wednesday, Mar 27) as a day to commemorate the creation of universe along with its contents as well as the victory of dharma against adharma. On this day, the Hindus make offerings presented to Supreme God along with his manifestation as an expression of gratitude upon his grace. Series of the festivities has been begun on Tumpek Uduh or Tumpek Pengatag, Saturday, last 13 December. At that time, the ritual is given to fruit trees that will be used as a means of oblation ingredient for the festivity coming every 210 days. However, the vibrant celebration starts on Anggara Wage Dungulan (Tuesday) 16 December or a day before Galungan characterized by the installation of penjor. Penjor is made from bamboo pole embellished with young coconut leaves. The upper edge curves down as a symbol of mountain. Various agricultural products such as rice, coconut, banana and other fruits are used to adorn the penjor. A piece of yellow-white fabric completed with Omkara sacred script makes it unique. Various leaves are used to embellish such as cabbage tree and banyan. After the penjor is installed at the entrance to the house, the upper end should be facing the middle of
road. Having installed a bamboo shrine near the penjor, it is then equipped with lamak, sampyan and other types of leaf oblation paraphernalia. At the upper end of penjor is festooned with a piece of white cloth symbolizing purity. Penjor signifies an offering of gratitude to God for all the blessing bestowed. On Kuningan Day, the offerings are completed with endongan, tamiang and kolem. Penjor is installed for 1 month according to Balinese pawukonbased calendar (35 days) and taken out after Buda Kliwon Pegatuakan. It is installed as an expression of gratitude and a sense of devotion to God in his manifestation as Hyang Giripati. Economic value The making of penjor is usually done by family members, especially the young with great togetherness and sincerity. Mutual assistance and cooperation are highly visible in the making of it. Its shape is also very simple because it does not put emphasis on the beauty but completeness of the ingredients. Unlike in the present time, penjor is nicely and beautifully made as well as given some ornamental elements. Besides, its form is not monotonous, but has been creatively varied. However, the essential ingredients in penjor are still maintained. For example, the penjor is now given additional elements such as dragon sculpture, colorful lights and various forms of creative tamiang, lamak and other coconut leaf arrangement. A motorcycle gang robs and stabs a student
DENPASAR - Before the stabbing case against a project worker named Ahmad Zainul, 19, on Jalan Raya Puputan, Renon, East Denpasar, could be revealed, another case involving a motorcycle gang happened again. Even, it was more brutal. A student, Komang Edi Wijaya, 16, was robbed and stabbed by a motorcycle gang on Jalan Tukad Balian, right in front of Victory Futsal, South Denpasar, Saturday (Dec 13). In addition to losing a helmet, the victim also suffered stabbing wounds in the right chest. According to Chief of South Denpasar Police, Nanang Prihasmoko, Sunday (Dec 14), the results of examination against witnesses, the incident occurred on Saturday around 11:00 p.m. Initially the victim living on Jalan Gunung Batur Gang Tekukur, Denpasar rode with Kadek Darmawan, 17, with the status as student on Jalan Tukad Balian, Renon. At that time, they came from Kuta
and wanted to go home. They had dropped by at a mini market on Jalan Tukad Balian to buy a drink. After that, both teenagers resumed their journey. Upon arrival at the scene, they were grazed by the motorcycle gang who was still teenager. However, they ignored it and continued the journey to their home. Unfortunately, the gang was increasingly violent. They
directly confronted the victim and immediately ganged up on them. Not only that, the victim’s helmet was taken away. Their action was increasingly brutal, and stabbed the victim on chest with a knife. The victim was unable to fight back because the motorcycle gang was with many people. After seeing the victim moaning in pain due to stabbing wound on chest, the perpetrators fled and took away a beige Scoopy helmet. “We are still investigating this case, especially in tracking the perpetrators. Our personnel have been deployed to hunt down the perpetrators,” added the police chief. Keep in mind, a project worker, Ahmad Zainul, 19, from Madura,
East Java, was beaten and stabbed several times by motorcycle gang members on Jalan Raya Puputan, Renon, East Denpasar. As a result, the victim suffered stabbing wounds on right and left abdomen, back and left arm. The case was dealt with by East Denpasar Police and to date it had not been revealed. Responding to the incident, a legal practitioner, Nengah Jimat, hoped that police and the government should take immediate action. When taking no action against the crime, it would claim more victims due to the motorcycle gang. “It is time for police as law enforcement officer to immediately take decisive action. We assess the government and police have not
seriously addressed the issues like this. Actually, it has been troubling, while related parties have not been able to handle it. It must be shameful. Moreover, the government is intensively echoing a mental revolution. The state has not been able to give protection to community in terms of orderliness and security,” he said. On that account, according to Jimat, police and local government should make coordination both in the matter of preventive and repressive measure. Hong Kong police close final protest site HONG KONG — Hong Kong police tore down barricades, folded up tents and arrested some protesters Monday at a third and final pro-democracy protest camp, ending demonstrations that blocked traffic in the southern Chinese city’s streets for 2 1/2 months. A police negotiator gave the 17 protesters one last chance to leave voluntarily from a short stretch of road in Causeway Bay before officers started taking them away one by one to a waiting bus.

Earlier, they chanted “We will be back” and called on Hong Kong’s unpopular Beijingbacked leader, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, to step down. Supporters shouted encouragement from the sidewalk. By midday, the road had been returned to traffic. The police operation came after authorities on Thursday shut down the protesters’ main camp near the heart of Hong Kong’s financial district and arrested 249 people who refused to leave. One last pocket of protesters camped out on a courtyard underneath the city’s legislature, near the main site, also cleared out voluntarily Monday afternoon. CIA report revives legal debate on interrogation
WASHINGTON — When the CIA sought permission to use harsh interrogation methods on a captured al-Qaida operative, the response from Bush administration lawyers was encouraging, even clinical. In one of several memos forming the legal underpinnings for brutal interrogation techniques, the CIA was told that Abu Zubaydah could lawfully be placed in a box with an insect, kept awake for days at a time and slapped multiple times in the face. Waterboarding, too, was acceptable because it did not cause the lengthy mental anguish needed to meet the legal standard of torture, the 2002 Justice Department memo says. The release last week of a Senate report cataloging years of such interrogation tactics has revived debate about legal opinions since discredited and withdrawn and about the decision to not prosecute the program’s architects or officers who used the methods. Civil rights groups in the United States and abroad are renewing calls to prosecute those who relied on techniques that President Barack Obama has called torture. “How can we seriously use the phrase ‘rule of law’ if crimes of this magnitude go uninvestigated and unprosecuted?” said Jameel Jaffer, the American Civil Liberties Union’s deputy legal director. The U.S. Justice Department, which spent years looking into
the matter, says it lacks sufficient evidence to convict anyone and found no new information in the report. It also is far from clear that any international case could be brought. Justice Department officials said they will not revisit their 2012 decision to close the investigation, citing among other challenges the passage of time and the difficulty of proving beyond a reasonable doubt that crimes were committed, especially in light of government memos that gave interrogators extraordinary latitude. “Our inquiry was limited to a determination of whether prosecutable offenses were committed. Importantly, our investigation was not intended to answer the broader questions regarding the propriety of the examined conduct,” the department said in a statement after the Senate report was released. That conclusion followed an investigation led by special prosecutor John Durham that began in 2009 as an outgrowth of a probe into the destruction of videotapes of CIA interrogation tactics. The inquiry into interrogation tactics came amid the release of an internal CIA inspector general’s report that said CIA interrogators once threatened to kill the children of a Sept. 11, 2001 attacks suspect and suggested that another suspected terrorist would be forced to watch his mother being sexually assaulted.(ap)

HONOLULU — A new study estimates nearly 270,000 tons of plastic is floating in the world’s oceans. That’s enough to fill more than 38,500 garbage trucks. The plastic is broken up into more than 5 trillion pieces, said the study published Wednesday in the scientific journal PLOS ONE. The paper is the latest in a nascent field where scientists are trying to better understand how much of the synthetic material is entering the oceans and how it’s affecting fish, seabirds and the larger marine ecosystem. The study’s lead author is Markus Eriksen of the 5 Gyres Institute, an organization that aims to reduce plastic in the oceans. To gather data, researchers dragged a fine mesh net at the sea surface to gather small pieces. Observers on boats counted larger items. They used computer models to calculate estimates for tracts of ocean not surveyed. The study only measured plastic floating at the surface. Plastic on the ocean floor wasn’t included.
Bits greater than about 8 inches (20 centimeters) accounted for threequarters of the plastic that the research estimated is in the ocean. Kara Lavender Law of the Sea Education Association in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, who wasn’t involved in the study, said the researchers gathered data in areas where scientists currently don’t have measurements for floating plastic debris, including the Indian Ocean, the Southern Ocean near Antarctica and the South Atlantic. In addition, the study’s estimate for tiny plastic bits less than one-fifth of an inch — about 35,540 tons — is comparable to an earlier study by researchers in Spain who used different methodology, Law said. That study estimated there was 7,000 to 35,000 tons of plastics this size floating in the ocean. It’s encouraging that two differ-
ent approaches came up with such similar answers, given how difficult it is to measure plastic in the ocean, she said. Studying the amount of plastic in the ocean will help scientists understand how the material will affect the environment and potentially the food chain. For example, Law said, we might eat tuna that has ingested another fish that has eaten plastic that has in turn eaten another fish with plastic. These plastics could potentially have toxic chemicals. “Am I being poisoned by eating the fish on my plate?” she asked. “We have very little knowledge of the chain of events that could lead to that. But it’s a plausible scenario that plastic ingested at lower levels of the food web could have consequences at higher levels of the food chain.” (ap)
GENEVA - Europe’s physics lab CERN said Friday it was on schedule to fire up the world’s biggest particle smasher again early next year, with almost double the energy of its previous run. CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) went offline in February 2013 for an 18-month overhaul after identifying what is believed to be the Higgs boson, the long-sought maker of mass theorised in the 1960s. The giant lab, housed in a 27-kilometre (17-mile) tunnel straddling the French-Swiss border, flushed out the so-called “God particle” by crashing proton beams at velocities near the speed of light. The LHC is scheduled to reopen next March for a second three-year run, and the makeover is expected
to nearly double the energy levels achieved in its collisions. “With this new energy level, the LHC will open new horizons for physics and for future discoveries,” CERN Director General Rolf Heuer said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to seeing what nature has in store for us,” he added. Earlier this week a test had been conducted in one eighth of the circular lab, in which the magnets for the first time were successfully powered to the level needed for beams to reach 6.5 teraelectronvolts (TeV) -- the operating energy for the second run, CERN said. “The goal for 2015 will be to run with two proton beams in order to produce 13 TeV collisions, an energy never achieved by any accelerator in the past,” it said.
Pittsburgh firm offering ‘moon mail’ delivery
PITTSBURGH — An outerspace delivery firm that is working with Carnegie Mellon University to put a privately owned lunar rover on the moon is offering to “mail” personal keepsakes to the moon as a way to help fund the partnership’s rocket launch. Astrobotic Technology and Carnegie Mellon are trying to get their lunar rover to the moon to win $20 million in an international contest sponsored by Google to promote privately funded lunar exploration. Astrobotic, a spin-off company of CMU, has leased a rocket built by a private California firm, Space X, to carry the lunar rover and is offering the MoonMail service to help pay for the trip. On its website, Space X advertises a moon rocket lease for $61 million, with a 10 percent discount for any of the groups competing in the Google competition. O n T h u r s d a y, A s t r o b o t i c launched moonmail.co, a website where people can sign up to send their keepsakes in tiny MoonMail packages to the moon, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. The cargo is regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration and the U.S. Department of Defense. As such, Astrobotic expects people will send

Governor urged to bring back manuscripts of Gedong Kertya
SINGARAJA - Gedong Kertya Singaraja is known as a library established during the era of Dutch administration. The building having the address on Jalan Veteran, Singaraja, retains a collection of palmleaf manuscripts written by the intellectuals during historical period. The manuscripts contain valuable guidance in all aspects of life. After the colonial period ended and the nation gained its independence, the library of Gedong Kertya remains sustainable and is managed by a local Technical Implementation Unit (UPTD) of Buleleng County. The well-maintained palm-leaf manuscript collection, especially its presence, has begun to be disturbed from some years ago. Bali government through the Documentation Center took over the palm-leaf collection stored at Gedong Kertya, Singaraja. Initially, the Bali Documentation Center took over some collections to be copied as preservation effort from extinction. However, different fact occurred, where the Bali Documentation Center replaced the original palm-leaf manuscript collection with the copied version stored at Gedong Kertya. By all means, this situation made Buleleng residents upset and much deplored the attitude of the Bali Documentation Center that seemed to ‘plunder’ the historical wealth stored at Gedong Kertya, Singaraja. Chronologically, the takeover of the palm-leaf manuscript collection at Gedong Kertya, Singaraja, was described by some public figures attending the yearend discussion entitled Enjok Enjing Kaje Kelod initiated by the Buleleng Journalists Community (KJB) on Friday (Dec 12) in the building of MR. I Gusti Ketut Pudja at the former Buleleng Harbor. Kadek Kariana from Jalan Gajah Mada, Singaraja, stated the ‘looting’ of palm-leaf manuscript collection belonging to Gedong Kertya, Singaraja, by the Bali Documentation Center was considered an attitude of wishing to take charge of the historical wealth stored in Buleleng. If the reason of the takeover was for preservation, it was still considered acceptable. But, what made him upset was that after the duplication of the palm-leaf collection completed, the Bali Documentation Center even returned the copied version of the palm-leaf manuscripts. “Why are all the historical assets of Buleleng looted? They have always been kept at Gedong Kertya from time immemorial why it should be taken over to Southern Bali. Actually, the Buleleng government including local community is able to preserve the historical heritage because it is the first historical heritage of Buleleng,” he said.
Against such condition, the former commissioner of the Buleleng Electoral Commission urged the governor of Bali to instruct the Bali Documentation Center to bring back the original collection of the palm-leaf manuscripts to their place of origin (Gedong Kertya). Regarding the maintenance and preservation, local government was believed to have a commitment for that including the utilization as a source of knowledge or as a facility to support the education for students. “Simply bring back to their place of origin, so that they can be used as a source of knowledge for students in our region,” he affirmed. Similar opinion was disclosed by a member of the Student Executive Board (BEM) of the State Hindu Dharma Institute (IHDN) Denpasar of Singaraja Campus, Ketut Budiarta. He also hoped that all the palm-leaf manuscripts of Gedong Kertya could be immediately returned to its original place. When stored at different location, it would make difficult for students in Northern Bali that would utilize the collection of Gedong Kertya for the needs of research. “We very much need them and those palm-leaf manuscripts must be stored at Gedong Kertya. If it is currently taken over by Bali government, we have difficulty because the collection is stored at different place,” he said. Responding to the suggestions, the Bureau Chief of Economic and Development Affairs of the Bali Regional Secretariat, Gede Suarjana, representing the governor of Bali could not give adequate responses to the insistence of the residents so as the Bali Documentation Center could return the palm-leaf manuscript collection to Gedong Kertya. He only answered the request of residents would be reported to his leadership. “As far as we know, the palm-leaf manuscripts were borrowed to be copied as an attempt for preservation of the historical heritage. Furthermore, we’ll report this matter to leadership and make coordination with the Bali Culture Agency,” he said. (mud)

He added that population of cattle also showed a decrease from the previous year. This year it only reached 78,000 heads, whereas in 2013 already reached 81,000. “The population of cattle has decreased and it means that the public interest to raise cattle Bali has diminished, too,” he said. As a matter of fact, the cattle breeding carried out by
Bangli community should have a master plan. So far, people only raised male cattle focused on the process of fattening, not on breeding. Of the total number of cattle, 65 percent was male and 35 percent was female. This number spread across all the subdistricts in Bangli County. Parwata added that for the sustainability of Bali cattle, farmers should switch to female cows in order to proliferate. By this attempt, the number of Bali cattle would continue to increase. “People should breed more female cows because they will produce offspring. By that way, the existence of Bali cattle will continue,” he explained. Regarding the effort to address the less maximal potential of livestock, Parwata claimed to have provided the assistance of cows for some communities. “We have attempted to provide cow assistance for some breeders as incentive so that they are motivated to preserve female cows,” he said. He hoped that Bali cattle breeding should continue to be encouraged because, according to him, it had a great potential to improve the people’s welfare, especially in Bangli. Until November 2014, Tabanan County recorded that 2,935 households still have the behavior of defecating out of place or do not have toilet facilities. It has reduced from 3,567 households. The number indicates if the behavior of defecating out of place remains rampant spreading across the subdistricts of Penebel amounting to 1,172 households, Selemadeg (612 households), East Selemadeg (287 households), Tabanan (252 households), Pupuan (192 households), Kerambitan (159 households), Baturiti (106 households), Marga (79 households) and Kediri (76 households). As for the West Selemadeg subdistrict, all households have owned permanent healthy toilet (JSP), semi-permanent healthy toilet (JSSP) or shared toilet. The Head of Tabanan Health Agency, Nyoman Suratmika, accompanied by the Environmental Sanitation officer, Made Mulyadi, explained that to achieve the MDG target, the government had rolled out a program known as the communitybased total sanitation (STBM). Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Miss South Africa crowned Miss World LONDON - Miss South Africa, 22-year-old Rolene Strauss, was crowned Miss World 2014 at the contest’s glitzy final in London on Sunday, with an estimated billion viewers watching on television around the globe.
Miss Hungary, Edina Kulcsar, was judged the runner-up and Miss United States, Elizabeth Safrit, came third in the 64th annual competition, contested by women from 121 countries. Medical student Strauss clasped her hands together in surprise and was crowned by the outgoing Miss World, Megan Young of the Philippines, to huge cheers in the ExCeL exhibition centre. “South Africa this is for you,” Strauss said. “I think I will brace myself for what’s about to happen. It’s a huge responsibility.”She told AFP she wanted to help spread education in her homeland and thereby help other people realise their dreams. “I am what I am today because of the opportunities I have received and I would love to give others the same opportunities;
educating, the opportunity to be educated, to make healthy choices and also to live their dreams,” Strauss said. And she was already getting used to the glittering crown. “I’ll definitely keep it on as long as I can but my parents are staying around here so they’ll be hugging me and I’m afraid that it might fall off,” she said. This year’s event has been rocked by the murder of Miss Honduras, 19-year-old Maria Jose Alvarado, who was shot dead along with her sister last month. Police in Honduras accuse her sister’s boyfriend of shooting them after seeing his partner dancing with another man at a party. Strauss and other contestants will travel to the crime-plagued central American nation to build a school named in the sisters’ honour.

“We hope that it will really start to impress on the people in Honduras that the violence, and hurting people like those two innocent women... maybe they can think again before they take a gun,” Miss World chairwoman Julia Morley told AFP. Sunday’s show started with a spectacular choreographed dance routine, with all the beauty queens on stage in costumes inspired by their homelands -- including Miss Bolivia in a colourful feathered headdress. While beauty remains central to the event, the women taking part are chiefly judged on their talents and involvement in good causes. Miss Malaysia won the talent competition in a live sing-off with Miss Scotland. In the Beauty with a Purpose section -- the heart of Miss World -- contestants present a charitable project they have been working on in their homeland. In this section, the judges gave equal first place to Misses Brazil, Guyana, India, Indonesia and Kenya, unable to separate them. In rounds held since the contestants arrived in London, Miss Finland topped the sporting competition; Miss United States was the multimedia winner; Miss Bosnia and Hercegovina won the top model round and Miss Sweden triumphed in beach fashion. Bill Cosby breaks silence on the media, his wife
LOS ANGELES — Bill Cosby broke his silence amid a flood of rape accusations in a very brief interview with The New York Post’s Page Six. “Let me say this. I only expect the black media to uphold the standards of excellence in journalism and when you do that you have to go in with a neutral mind,” Cosby told the publication’s Stacy Brown, who noted that he frequently writes for African-American publications. Cosby, 77, has stayed silent in light of the more than two dozen women
who have come forward to accuse him of having drugged and raped them. The alleged incidents go as far back as the 1960s. In the interview, Cosby also addressed how his wife, Camille Cosby, has weathered the allegations and ongoing public scrutiny. “Love and the strength of womanhood,” he said. “Let me say it again, love and the strength of womanhood. And, you could reverse it, the strength of womanhood and love.” Cosby declined to address the rape and sexual assault allegations, though.
According to the report, he’s been advised not to discuss the ongoing cases with the media. Brown wrote that the comedian, speaking from his Massachusetts home, sounded “upbeat” on the phone. The Page Six interview ended abruptly, though, when Cosby told the reporter that “they” don’t want him talking to the media. Representatives for Cosby did not immediately respond to the AP’s request for comment. (ap)

The pre-Christmas siege of the Lindt chocolate cafe triggered a security lockdown in an area of Australia’s biggest city that houses several government and corporate headquarters, as hundreds of armed police surrounded the site. The government said there was no clear motivation but the flag appeared to be one commonly used by jihadist groups bearing the shahada, or profession of faith in Islam. It said: “There is no God but Allah; Mohammed is his messenger.” More than 40 Australian Muslim groups jointly condemned the siege
and the use of the flag, which they said had been hijacked by “misguided individuals that represent no-one but themselves”. “We reject any attempt to take the innocent life of any human being or to instil fear and terror into their hearts,” they said in a statement. Australia has been on high alert after the government raised concerns that citizens who have fought alongside jihadists in Iraq and Syria could return home radicalised and carry out “lone wolf” attacks. convened a national security meeting to deal with the “disturbing” development. Some six hours into the siege, three men emerged from the popular cafe and ran for their lives, two from the front door and one from an emergency exit. Around an hour later two distraught women also fled. It was not clear if they escaped or were released. One was barista Elly Chen whose sister Nicole said on Facebook: “Yessss I finally see you. I’m so glad you’re safe!!!!” Among those left inside was an employee of Indian IT giant Infosys, the company said, as the leaders of India, Britain and Canada tweeted their concern. US President Barack Obama was briefed on the crisis, the White House said.
Negotiators “have had contact and continue to have contact” with the armed man holding the hostages, New South Wales state deputy police commissioner Catherine Burn said. “We do not have information to suggest that anyone is harmed at this stage,” she added. Channel Seven reporter Chris Reason, whose newsroom is opposite the cafe, tweeted: “From inside Martin Place newsroom, we’ve counted around 15 hostages -- not 50 -- mix of women, men, young, old - but no children.” Reason added: “We can see gunman is rotating hostages, forcing them to stand against windows, sometimes 2 hours at a time.” The hostage-taker, reportedly armed with a shotgun, made a se-
ries of demands through Australian media, but they were retracted after police requested they not be made public. Journalist Chris Kenny, who was in the Lindt cafe just before the siege began, said he understood the automatic glass sliding doors had been disabled. He added that a woman who tried to get in as he was leaving saw someone with a weapon who told those inside “to put up their hands”. The scene of the drama, Martin Place, is Sydney’s financial centre and houses several prominent buildings, including the New South Wales parliament, the US consulate, the country’s central bank and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
