LOS ANGELES — After months of speculation, Khloe Kardashian is ending her four-year marriage to Lamar Odom. The reality TV star filed for divorce Friday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, citing irreconcilable differences. She also wants her last name restored to Kardashian from Kardashian Odom. The filing comes days after Odom pleaded no contest on Monday to a misdemeanor drunken driving charge. The 34-year-old athlete was arrested last August after his Mercedes-Benz SUV was seen weaving on an LA freeway. He seemed to address rumors of personal problems when he tweeted a cryptic message in September, saying he had been “Seeing the Snakes.” Only the Kardashian family, Odom said then, was standing by him. The 6-foot-10-inch power forward has been out of the NBA since going unsigned as a free agent after a miserable season last year. Odom last played for the Los Angeles Clippers during the 2012-13 season, averaging a career-low 4.0 points and 5.9 rebounds. Clippers coach Doc Rivers met with him last month, but apparently nothing came of those talks. He had his best years with the Los Angeles Lakers between 2004 and 2011. The team won NBA championships in 2010 and 2011 and

Odom won the NBA’s sixth man award during that second championship run. Kardashian, 29, is best known for starring with her sisters Kim and Kourtney, and her mother, Kris Jenner, in the long-running reality TV series “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” She also runs an upscale clothing store with her sisters and was featured in the short-lived reality series with Odom, called “Khloe & Lamar.” The two were married in 2009 in a large ceremony that was taped for the E! network, following a whirlwind engagement that was also filmed. Kardashian laughed last spring when asked about critics who said that the marriage wouldn’t last. “I think everyone said it wouldn’t last, but I can totally understand why,” she said. “We knew each other for only 30 days and then we got married. ... I just felt it and same with Lamar. Thank God it worked because it very well could’ve gone the other way.” In recent episodes of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” Odom hasn’t been featured and the show has hinted at marital issues. TMZ first reported Friday’s divorce filing.

NEW YORK — Miley Cyrus headlined the annual Jingle Ball concert at Madison Square Garden, performing her hits “Wrecking Ball” and “We Can’t Stop.” Lindsay Lohan introduced the singer Friday night, saying she loves that Cyrus is being “herself.” Wild child Cyrus sang onstage in a shimmery red ensemble resembling a Christmas ornament. Other performers included Selena Gomez, Enrique Iglesias and Robin Thicke, who asked the crowd: “I wonder who Miley Cyrus will twerk on tonight?” Ariana Grande shined as she belted songs such as “The Way” and “Honeymoon Avenue” in Mariah Carey form. QUNU - A 21-gun salute and full honour guard escorted the coffin of Nelson Mandela as his state funeral got underway Sunday in the rolling hills of his rural boyhood home. A Xhosa hymn, “Fulfill Your Promise”, sounded the start of the ceremony, organised to reflect the traditions of his tribe and the pride of the country he transformed as dissident and president. The specially constructed marquee venue held 4,500 people, with pride of place going to Mandela’s family, including his widow Graca Machel and ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela who sat on either side of President Jacob Zuma. Mandela’s flag-draped casket was placed on cow skins and sur-

rounded by 95 candles -- each signifying a year of his extraordinary life, which saw him make the journey from prisoner to president. “The person who lies here is South Africa’s greatest son,” said ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa. Overseen by male members of his clan, the burial will include the slaughter of an ox -- a ritual performed through various milestones of a person’s life under the clan’s traditions. During the ceremony, Mandela will be referred to as Dalibhunga -- the name given to him at the age of 16 after undergoing the initiation to adulthood Mourners will wear traditional Xhosa regalia, with blue and white beaded headgear and necklaces. Xhosa speakers are divided into several groups, including the Thembu people, of which Mandela is a member.

Although Mandela never publicly declared his religious denomination, his family comes from a Methodist background. Tutu attends burial Funeral plans were briefly overshadowed by an outcry after Mandela’s old friend and fellow Nobel peace laureate Desmond Tutu said he had not been invited. In the end Tutu did attend, and the government tried to brush off the confusion as a misunderstanding. Tutu -- who baptised South Africa the “Rainbow Nation” -- has been a persistent critic of the government of President Jacob Zuma and has also spoken out against infighting in Mandela’s family. House burns out, a dweller killed Bali Post

SINGARAJA - A modest home at Dauh Munduk hamlet, Bungkulan village, Sawan subdistrict, Buleleng, burned out at 11:30 p.m. on Friday (Dec 13). Homeowner, Nyoman Toya, 85, was killed in the incident. At the time of the fire incident, Toya, was alleged to fall asleep and could not save his neck. The victim was sick so he was unable to survive. He suffered adequately severe burns. Victim’s body was taken to Buleleng Hospital at 01:30 p.m., Saturday (Dec 14) for an external post mortem exam. After getting post mortem handling for about an hour, the victim’s body was brought back to his home. A local resident, Wayan Sukaraya, said the fire occurred on Friday night and took place rapidly as the victim’s house was made of semi-permanent materials such as flammable

bamboo plaited wall. “I saw the fire blazing and it was said if Mr. Toya was still in the house. However, no one dared to come in as the fire was blazing,” he said. Sukaraya added if the victim had been asked to stay with his relatives in a more permanent home. It was less than ten meters away from the scene. However, the victims always refused and considered it more comfortable to live in the semi-permanent house. The victim’s body was immediately taken to customary cemetery of Bungkulan village on Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, Chief of Sawan Police, Nyoman Kartika, admitted that he could not conclude the cause of fire. “We are still making coordination first with the forensic laboratory for the crime scene investigation,” he said. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Mall or supermarket entrepreneurs in Denpasar seem to have started the battle of closeout and discount. Director of Consumer Protection Foundation (YLPK) of Bali, Putu Armaya, appealed to the public as consumers to be more careful, intelligent and cautious about any kinds of promotion offering discounts, Friday (Dec 13). According to him, the ‘discount war’ tradition of trick was one of the ways to attract visitors’ interest and increase sales. “In many cases, the basic price is raised first and then it is discounted. If the price is IDR 100,000, it is then raised to IDR 200,000. Afterward, it is discounted up to 50 percent. It means the price is back to the normal price,” he said. He said the rise of discount issued by manufacturers or dealers was based on a number of reasons. Firstly, they made closeout to the old stock. Secondly, they pursued the quantity of sales in order to achieve the profit target. On that account, he continued, the

business strategy through closeout and greatly discounted prices by selling cheaply was vulnerable to mislead and trap consumers. Producers hoped the discount would bind consumers, so that consumer would return again to shop. “Indeed, it is not wrong if such business strategy applied by entrepreneurs to increase their sales,” he said. However, said Armaya, the business strategy through closeout and provision of cheap price could potentially mislead and trap consumers. The efforts to deceive were generally committed by playing on words and mentioning the products with the cheapest price among the other products offered by competitors. In fact, the price offered was unlike that. Therefore, the discount war organized ahead of the feast should be restricted and supervised by the government. It was intended to avoid fraud or deception against society as a result of discount war held by merchants. “Under Article 18 of the

Consumer Protection Act, any effort to trick consumers with discount can be punished with imprisonment of 2 (two) years or a fine of IDR 2 billion because in the promotion of discount the entrepreneurs must give a true and fair information in accordance with Article 4 of the Act No.8/1999 on Consumer Protection,” he said. In this case, he said, the government needed to come down to the field to conduct surveillance. Supervision was not enough when it was only focused on the expired products and distribution permit, while misleading discounts and inappropriate promotion with the reality should also begin to be prioritized. In this case, the government also had the authority to make surveillance. “On the other hand, people should read more selectively and are not easy to believe the content of advertisement. However, the policing was not made evenly because some villages were not explored in spite of many violating attributes. So, if there were people in need of the serum, then his party would refer them to Sanglah Hospital. “We in the county hospital are not provided with the serum by the province. When people need the serum, we’ll refer them to Sanglah Hospital,” he added. Meanwhile, related to rabies prevention, the Section Head of Rabies Prevention, Made Armana, accompanied by the Head of Bangli Livestock and Fisheries Agency, Alit Parwata, said that so far his party had routinely performed preventive mass vaccination including the elimination of stray dogs. Of the estimated total dog population reaching 39,900 heads, his party could have vaccinated 37,125 dogs until the end of 2013. “Pursuant to the rules, we have to vaccinate 70 percent of the population. Until now, we’ve vaccinated 86 percent. So, in terms of vaccination, we think it enough,” said Armana. However, to prevent the occurrence of rabies in Bangli his party would continue to take preventive measures including the search to be done with the Bali Livestock and Fisheries Agency in the near future. He did not dismiss the obstacles encountered in the field all this time in the effort to eradicate rabies. Field officers often got difficulty to vaccinate stray dogs so the only way to take was by eliminating them. Not only that, there were still many people who refused to kill their dog despite their dog was alleged to get infected by rabies. “Aside from the solution by elimination, we also often suggest the dog owners to perform sterilization against their male dogs, so the dog population in Bangli can be reduced,” he said. BANGKOK — Thailand’s armed forces took center stage in the country’s ongoing political drama, showing off its gentler side by hosting a forum over the weekend to allow the leader of a protest movement to present his demand for an immediate change of government. The military did not indicate whether it would act on the protesters’ behalf during the Saturday forum. And protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban repeated his position that caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra must step down and an interim, non-elected government administer the country before any new polls are held. An election has been called for February. The government hosted its own separate forum Sunday billed as a brainstorming session “to get a roadmap for the way forward” with senior officials, politicians, lawmakers, academics and others. In a sign of the continued divisions in the country, Suthep and his “People’s Democratic Reform Committee” said they would snub the event as did the main opposition Democrat Party, which has backed the protests. Supreme Commander Gen. Thanasak Patimaprakorn, a senior but mostly figurehead officer, was the official host of Saturday’s forum, distancing the proceedings from the real power broker — army commander Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha, who declined to make any comments. Suthep stuck to his demands and urged the military to back him, telling it he was not calling for a coup, but that “if you make a decision soon, the people will see you as a hero of the people, and we can solve the problem.” Thanasak said the sides must reach a “solu-

tion that fixes everything for the long term, and does not return things to the same cycle.” The military’s interventions in recent decades have been messy. In 1992, the army shot dead dozens of pro-democracy demonstrators protesting a militarybacked government in the streets of Bangkok, the capital, and in 2010 repeated the bloodshed in quashing another uprising. The army’s 2006 coup against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra — Yingluck’s brother — was a bloodless one, but was followed by the installation of an inept interim government. The coup also polarized the country, which has seen Thaksin’s supporters and opponents contending for power ever since, sometimes violently. Suthep and his group want new laws to banish corruption in politics to be implemented ahead of any election. The protesters say Thai politics are hopelessly corrupt under the alleged continuing influence of Thaksin, who has lived in self-imposed exile since 2008 to avoid jail time on a corruption charge. Yingluck has dissolved parliament to call elections for Feb. 2. More significant than what Suthep said Saturday was the role the armed forces played in hosting the event. The military, apparently seeking to cast itself in a new light, has repeatedly declared itself neutral in the current political battle, though it’s no secret that it dislikes Thaksin. Despite being wanted by police on an insurrection charge, Suthep sat on a stage during Saturday’s forum, which was attended by the leaders of the various military branches. The commander of the national police force, whose leadership and ranks are generally pro-government, was invited but did not attend.

WASHINGTON - Steady economic gains, including a sharp fall in the unemployment rate, should stir the US Federal Reserve to begin trimming its stimulus program at its policy meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday. But economists say there is a chance the Fed will still hold off the long-awaited taper of its huge bond purchase program, which aims at holding down interest rates to spur investment and hiring. With inflationary pressure absent, outgoing Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke and his successor-designate, Vice Chair Janet Yellen, could very well wait another month to be sure the economic data holds up. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) holds its final meeting of the year on December 17-18, marking the first anniversary of the $85 billion a month QE3, the latest edition of the crisis-era “quantitative easing” operations. Since Bernanke began talking about reducing the program in May, markets have expected the start of the taper, with bond yields and lending rates, especially mortgage rates, jumping more than one percentage point in anticipation. Since then, FOMC meeting minutes show a reticence to take the first step, amid concern over Washington policy battles and mixed indicators on the economy’s health. Tapering QE3 would signal the beginning of the end of the Fed’s five-year crisis stance, a major step toward the normalization of monetary policy, including, eventually, higher base interest rates. But analysts think that move could be held off for Yellen to put her stamp on policy. The US Senate will almost certainly approve her nomination next week, after which she will take over on February 1. The Fed’s next two reviews will come on January 29-30 and then March 19-20. “Policymakers will probably wait a little while longer in order to feel secure that these improvements are sustainable,” said IHS Global Insight in a report. One reason for QE3 last year was the need to offset the drag on economic growth of looming tax increases and steep cuts in government spending that were to come into place from the beginning of 2013. In addition, there was the turmoil of constant fights over raising the debt ceiling, including the 16-day government shutdown in October. The economic numbers are increasingly supportive of ending QE3. In November the unemployment rate sank unexpectedly sharply to 7.0 percent, a fiveyear low. Other data is also fairly good on industrial production, consumer spending, exports and investment. The Fed’s most recent regional survey found few weak points. Growth overall remains “modest to moderate.” On the other hand, inflation remains so weak that some policy makers have fretted about deflation. The official consumer price index was rising 1.0 percent annually in last month’s read, well below the Fed’s target level of 2.0 percent.

Indonesia, according to OECD forecasts, is expected to shift from a middle-income nation to a high-income or advanced country by 2042. GAZA - More than 5,000 people have been evacuated from flood-damaged homes in northern Gaza and at least one person killed in what the United Nations called “a disaster area”. The flooding, caused by four days of torrential rain, was so severe that many homes could only be accessed by rowing boat with water two meters (more than six feet) deep in some places. “Large swathes of northern Gaza are a disaster area with water as far as the eye can see,” the United Nations Relief Works Agency (UNRWA) that administers refugee camps in the Palestinian territory, said in a statement on Saturday. Severe weather in the form of heavy snowfall also paralyzed Palestinian cities such as Hebron in the occupied West Bank, as well as Jerusalem and parts of Israel’s northern Galilee. In Gaza, many people were trapped inside homes inundated by rising waters. A 22-year-old Palestinian man died from smoke inhalation on Saturday after lighting a fire to warm his home, a government spokesman said. The Gaza health ministry said 100 other people had been hurt as flood waters damaged poorly built homes in the coastal territory. Among those injured were people who had been hit by objects falling from inundated buildings or had been in car accidents on flooded roads. MEDAN - The number of refugees, who are victims of the recent eruption at Mount Sinabung in Karo District, North Sumatra province, increased to 17,939 last Saturday. The refugees are currently being accommodated at 31 shelters, said the Head of the Mount Sinabung Disaster Mitigation Media Center Jhonson Tarigan, to Antara, here, Sunday. According to him, the 31 shelters consist of Tiga Binanga area, Payung Church, the Grand Mosque of Kabanjahe, Kabanjahe District Military Command dormitory, Jambur Natolu area, Islamic Center building, Cape Mbelang area and Cape Pulo area. The refugees hail from 23 villages and two hamlets in Karo District, such as Sukameriah, Guru Kinayan, Selandi Lama, Kutarakyat and Sigaranggarang in Payung Sub-district. “Besides, the refugees also come from villages such as Berastepu, Sibintun, Gamber, C Kuta, Kuta

Mbelin, Kebayaken, Kuta Tonggal and Sukanalu in Simpang Empat Sub-district,” he said. He said at least 17,918 people or 5,537 families had been evacuated and accommodated in Kabanjahe, capital of Karo district, until last Friday. Jhonson said the refugees remained solid at the shelters and continued to receive food and medicine assistance from the Karo administration, private institutions, political party leaders, businessmen, and students. “Many people have donated foods, medicines, and beverages at the Kabanjahe command post,” he said. He added the number of refugees reached 17,443 last Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Karo district administration noted the number of refugees sheltered in Kabanjahe was 17,352 last Tuesday. The alert status of Mount Sinabung had been raised to the fourth or highest level after the volcano’s activities intensified further.

Seven past European champions, including all six finalists from the past three years, await the pairings to be made at UEFA headquarters, which will kick off arguably the highest quality football seen in 2014. An especially strong pot of eight seeded teams includes all three FIFA Ballon d’Or award candidates: defending champion Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery; Barcelona’s Lionel Messi; plus nine-time champion Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo. Other seeded group winners are: Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid.
