Foo Fighters, Natalie Portman cancel events in Paris

NEW YORK — The Foo Fighters, Natalie Portman, U2 and other entertainers have canceled events in Paris ollowing deadly terrorist attacks in the city.

Natalie Portman The Foo Fighters canceled the remaining dates of their European tour, including a planned show in Paris on Monday. Film distributor Mars said Saturday it had canceled promotional appearances for the film “Jane Got a Gun” starring Portman. The Oscar-winning actress was scheduled to appear at the film’s premiere and junket interviews on Monday in Paris. “Because of the events (Friday) night, we are canceling TV appearances, junket and preview appearances with Natalie Portman Nov. 15-16,” the film distributor said in a statement Saturday. U2 postponed its Saturday night concert in Paris, which was to be aired by HBO. The Foo Fighters were scheduled to play at the Accor Hotels Arena in Paris on Monday. The Dave Grohl-led band canceled Friday night’s show in Casalecchio Di Reno, Italy, as well as concerts in Turin, Italy; Lyon, France; and Barcelona, Spain. “It is with profound sadness and heartfelt concern for everyone in Paris that we have been forced to announce

the cancellation of the rest of our tour. In light of this senseless violence, the closing of borders, and international mourning, we can’t continue right now,” the band said in a statement released Saturday. “There is no other way to say it. This is crazy and it sucks. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who was hurt or who lost a loved one.” At least 129 people were killed Friday at suicide bombings near France’s national stadium, shootings at Paris cafes and a hostage-taking inside the concert theater Bataclan, where the American rock band Eagles of Death Metal was scheduled to perform. The terrorism-themed movie “Made in France” had a Nov. 18 release date but it was being postponed. The French film’s poster shows an automatic rifle on top of the Eiffel Tower. The Grammy-winning U.S. rock band Deftones were also scheduled to play at the venue on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. “Thank for all your inquiries on our well being. With managing partner Benoit Demouy, Rihanna has launched Fr8me, which helps stylists, hairdressers and makeup artists book editorial and celebrity jobs. The singer’s makeup artist and Taraji P. Henson’s hairstylists and wardrobe stylist are already on Fr8me’s roster. First attacker identified from Paris carnage

PARIS - French police have identified the first of seven gunmen who killed at least 129 people in a wave of carnage claimed by the Islamic State group, as international investigators stepped up their probes into Paris’s worst ever attacks. French authorities Saturday named the first attacker as 29year-old Omar Ismail Mostefai, who was identified from a severed finger found at Bataclan concert hall, scene of the worst of the bloodshed. IS jihadists said they were behind the gun and suicide attacks that left a trail of destruction at a sold-out concert hall, at restaurants and bars, and outside France’s Stade de France national stadium. President Francois Hollande called the coordinated assault on Friday night an “act of war” as the capital’s normally bustling streets fell eerily quiet, 10 months after attacks on magazine Charlie Hebdo shocked the nation. Meanwhile the investigation widened across Europe, with Belgian police arresting several suspects and German authorities probing a possible link to a man recently found with a car of explosives. The discovery of a Syrian passport near the body of one attacker has raised suspicions some of the assailants might have entered Europe as part of an influx of people fleeing Syria’s civil war. “We confirm that the (Syrian) passport holder came through the Greek island of Leros on October 3, where he was registered under EU rules,” said the Greek minister for citizen protection, Nikos Toskas.

To the north, loud explosions reverberated around the national stadium, packed with some 80,000 fans watching France beat Germany in a soccer exhibition match. One of the loud detonations in the chill air so startled French player Patrice Evra that he paused in mid-run, seemingly lost, and kicked away the ball. A police union official, Gregory Goupil, said the two explosions were suicide attacks and a bombing that killed at least three people — near two of the entrances to the stadium and a McDonalds. The stadium was the first site targeted. From there, the wave of killings quickly spread. There were 14 dead on one street, five on another, Molins said. The spread of the killings added to the confusion and made a coherent picture slow to form. But the shock was instantaneous, as was the understanding that this was terror and killing on a scale unseen in Paris since World War II. “The terrorists, the assassins, sprayed the outsides of several cafes with machine guns and went inside,” Cadot, the police chief, said. “So there were victims in terrible and atrocious

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Bigger, more accessible museum proposed at Statue of Liberty

NEW YORK — A full-scale copper replica of Lady Liberty’s face is the first thing that greets visitors to the museum in the base of the Statue of Liberty. But the face that gives visitors a chance to get up close and personal with an aspect of the statue that otherwise looms far out of reach is available to only a limited number of visitors. The museum is open only to those who have tickets to the pedestal or the crown. The National Park Service wants to change that, and has proposed building a larger museum on Liberty Island that would be available

to all of the approximately 4 million annual visitors to the site, not just the 20 percent or so who have statue tickets. “We’d like to make the visit as enriching as possible,” said John Piltzecker, superintendent of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island, who earlier this month announced the opening of public comment on the idea, among the initial steps to

making it a reality. The next step would be working with a private foundation to raise money for the planned 20,000square-foot (1,860-square-meter) museum, since no federal dollars would be used for the project. Piltzecker didn’t have a figure on what the project could cost but was nonetheless optimistic the museum would open in three to five years. The park service has a location in mind, on the northwest side of the island

somewhat away from the entrance to the statue, and has started thinking about what would go in it. One possibility would be the original torch, which currently greets visitors in the pedestal lobby since it was removed in 1984. The material that’s in the current museum, which covers the history of the statue as well as how it was made, would also make the move. That would include the giant face, as well as a replica of the statue’s foot, and exhibits looking at the models and molds used to create Lady Liberty, a gift from France for the American

centennial. It was dedicated at its Liberty Island site in 1886, 10 years after the centennial/ Eileen Gormley, visiting from Princeton, New Jersey, said having access to the museum was important. “This part here is very important and very informative and to just walk up and look at it, you don’t get any of the background and history.” Michael Miller, of El Dorado Hills in California, agreed. “It brings it to life,” he said. “It helps to make the seeing of the image itself more meaningful.” (ap)

NUSA DUA - The Association of Indonesia Guarantee Corporation (Asippindo) considers it very strategic to have the International Guarantee Seminar (IGS) and 28th Conference of the Asian Credit Supplementation Institution Confederation (ACSIC) convene in Bali. This event will help national guaranteeing industry players to function in a more effective and efficient manner, by broadening and enriching their knowledge of this field. This knowledge will no doubt help to strengthen Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Cooperatives. Chairman of Asippindo, Diding S. Anwar, while preparing for the event, pointed out that learning about underwriting from other countries can benefit all related parties. “We, the 20 member companies of Asippindo, want to learn from other countries about underwriting. We are grateful that the government and various other stakeholders are strongly supporting this event,” he said. Anwar added that amongst those who are confirmed to be attending the event are: Representatives of the Ministry of Economy, the Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners FSA, Bali’s governor and the governor of Bangka Belitung. “They have all been supportive of the International Seminar on Guarantee and Asia Guarantee Corporation Conference,” he said. The Chairman of Asippindo also said that this event will allow for an exchange of knowledge through specific case studies and is expected to contribute to financial inclusion and open the way for SMEs be financed as they learn about accessing sources of capital. “For the moment, SMEs in this country still rely directly on banks for guaranteeing their loans,” said Anwar.

Banks here are the ones who issue loans to small companies, and then look for larger companies to become the guarantors of the credit, he explained. According to Anwar, this business model, such as those applied in Japan and South Korea, have allowed SMEs to develop rapidly. A lot has to be done to strengthen SMEs. “We believe that if underwriters look to the future and do not simply follow banks, then SMEs will be better able to access capital from financial institutions,” said Anwar who also serves as President Director of Jamkrindo. In Malaysia for example, SMEs often request loans directly form guarantee companies who will then find banks willing to issue the loan. Asippindo, working through Jamkrindo has established an institution dedicated to ranking and offering consulting to SME management, as way to help SMEs increase their business through increased capacity and capability. In addition to the rating agency, the new institution also has an agency that functions to provide data bases to SMEs about their specific market. NUSA DUA - Committee Chairman of International Guarantee Seminar (IGS), Nina Kurnia Dewi, on Sunday, said that preparations have gone well for both the 28th ACSIC Conference and IGS. Participants from five different continents and dozens of countries have started to arrive and those who are already present include participants from South Korea, Japan, Jordan, Italy, Chile, Tajikistan and Ghana. “We invited about 500 people from both Indonesia and the rest of the world, to attend the seminar, but even more people than expected have joined with a total of 650 confirmed participants. ACSIC (Asian Credit Supplementation Instiution Confederation) delegates from the 11 member countries have confirmed attendance,” she said. Dewi added that it is an honor for Indonesia to be entrusted to host for this big event that is expected to serve as a training session and allow for the transfer of knowledge that will contribute to the development of this industry in the future. The guarantee industry in Indonesia is presently developing. There are currently 20 credit guarantee corporations (CGC), and the establishment of other credit guarantee corporations is strongly encouraged by the Indonesian Government to boost the economy, regional economy, SMEs and access to financing. The regulation of the guarantee institution was formally issued in 2008, although the practice of credit guarantee has been started since 1970 by the establishment of Perum Jamkrindo. To support the growth of the guarantee industry, the Indonesian Parlement

is currently drafting the Indonesian Guarantee Act, in which it is expected to be finalized at the end of 2015. In order to promote the development of guarantee industry in Indonesia, the knowledge and experience sharing are needed to improve the understanding, awareness and know-how of the credit guarantee practices for all guarantee stakeholders, including the Indonesian credit guarantee corporations, government and local government, regulator, banks, non-bank financial institution and other related parties. One of the efforts to do so is through the holding of the international seminar that would invite people from Indonesian Guarantee stakeholders and from all over the world to learn together about the SMEs Development and the role of Credit Guarantee Corporation. ACSIC Conference is an annual event and held by the host of country that confirmed and agreed among ACSIC members. The 28th ACSIC Conference would be held in Nusa Dua Bali, Indonesia. The theme of the 28th ACSIC Conference is “Measuring the Soundness and Key Performance Indicator (KPI) of Credit Guarantee Corporation”.

One of the agenda in the conference is the Chief Delegates’ Meeting (CDM) that would discuss some agendas. ACSIC has been the largest Asian cooperative body for the Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) since its foundation in 1987. Today there are 11 countries with 16 member institutions. The objective of Asian Credit Supplementation Institution Confederation (ACSIC) is to promote the sound development of the credit supplementation system for small businesses in the countries of Asia

through exchange of information, discussions and interchange of personnel among small business credit supplementation institutions. To achieve the preceding objective, ACSIC conducts the following activities; holding meetings for information exchange and discussions for the benefit of institutions. The meeting held at regular intervals at venues rotating among the countries to which institutions belong, unless otherwise decided. Other activities necessary to achieve the ACSIC’s objective.

Opening two days of talks with world leaders in Turkey, Obama pledged solidarity with France in the effort to hunt down the perpetrators and bring them to justice. He said “the skies have been darkened” by the Paris attacks, but offered no details about what the U.S. or its coalition partners might do to step up its assault against the Islamic State group. “The killing of innocent people, based on a twisted ideology, is an attack not just on France, not just on Turkey, but it’s an attack on the civilized world,” Obama said after meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In addition to the Paris attacks, IS is blamed for two bombings in Turkey this year that killed roughly 130 people. The specter of the Islamic State threat and Syria’s civil war hanged over the Turkish seaside city of Antalya as Obama and other leaders descended for the Group of 20 summit of leading rich and developing nations. Although the overlapping crises were already on the lineup for the two days of talks, they were thrust to the forefront by elaborately

coordinated attacks that killed 129 in the French capital just two days earlier, in the most destructive attack in the West blamed on the extremist group. In a fresh reminder of the Islamic State’s expanding capacity to wreak havoc, five Turkish police officers were injured Sunday when a suicide bomber blew himself up during a police raid on a suspected IS hideout near the Syrian border. Turkish security forces also rounded up 20 suspected IS militants in and around Antalya in the run-up to the G-20. Although world leaders have offered sweeping condemnations of IS following the Paris attacks, they’ve struggled to offer concrete proposals for how to escalate the fight or more effectively rein the group in. Asked by reporters whether he would consider additional action against IS following the Paris attacks, Obama declined to tip his hand. Obama’s meeting with Erdogan came at the start of a 9-day trip to Turkey, the Philippines and Malaysia that has already been largely overshadowed by Friday’s attacks

in Paris and the related issues of Syria’s civil war and the resulting migrant crisis. Obama said the U.S. stands with Turkey and Europe in the effort to reduce the flow of migrants, and Erdogan predicted a “strong message” on fighting terrorism would come out of the summit. “This terror attack was not just against the French people, it was against the whole of humanity,” Erdogan said. The summit’s host, Erdogan is fresh off his party’s impressive victory in Turkey’s recent elections, but his relations with Obama have been strained over tactical disagreements about how to push Assad out of power in Syria. The United States, along with coalition partners, has been bombing IS in Iraq and Syria for more than a year with limited success. President Barack Obama has been reluctant to get pulled deeper into the conflict and has ruled out a major U.S. ground offensive, although he recently authorized sending a few dozen special operations forces into Syria. Other nations the U.S. views warily, like Iran and Syria, have also bombed IS, in a dizzying range of militaries piloting the skies above the Islamic State’s self-proclaimed caliphate. Even as airlines operated a normal schedule of flights into and out of Paris on Saturday, travelers with future plans to visit the French capital reconsidered their options after a series of terror attacks. Some quickly canceled their tickets, a worrisome sign for the travel and tourism industries. Joe Nardozzi, a 31-year-old New York investment banker, and his wife won’t be taking the wedding-anniversary trip they planned later this month. “I have no interest in losing my life over a trip to Paris,” he said. Travel agents said some clients called to cancel trips, and one advocacy group for business travelers predicted that corporations would let frightened employees do the same. On Friday night, terrorists with guns and suicide vests carried out coordinated attacks across Paris that left at least 129 people dead and more than 350 injured. The targets, including a cafe and a concert hall, were the types of places that travelers on a vacation or business trip might visit. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attacks. Decisions by companies and leisure travelers could hinge on whether the Paris attacks are seen as a one-time event or the vanguard of a stepped-up campaign by Islamic radicals. Islamic State, the group fighting in Syria and Iraq, also claimed last month that it bombed a Russian passenger jet over Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, although investigators have not determined the cause of the crash that killed 224 people. High tensions after the attacks could be seen at airports across Europe on Saturday. A Paris-bound Air France jet was evacuated at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport after authorities received a threatening tweet. A terminal at London’s Gatwick Airport was shut down for hours after a man was seen throwing away what looked like a gun. Air France said it would operate all upcoming flights to and from France but that delays were expected because of increased security at airports, including Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport. U.S. authorities said that they had nothing to add to Friday’s comment by Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson that officials didn’t know of any specific or credible terror threats against the United States. United Airlines and Delta Air Lines said that all their flights between the U.S. and Paris operated on Saturday. American Airlines said all its flights would run too except a Paris-to-Dallas flight — that plane remained in Dallas when the Paris-bound leg was canceled Friday night. Delta spokesman Anthony Black said flights to and from Paris were full. Still, some Americans canceled upcoming trips after seeing coverage of the terror on Paris streets. Blake Fleetwood, president of New York-based Cook Travel, said about 10 customers out of the roughly 30 with trips booked to Paris told him they want to cancel. He and his wife might do the same next month. “It’s a terrible situation,” Fleetwood said. “It’s going to hurt the travel industry, the hotels, the airlines, the restaurants.” Kevin Mitchell, who runs an advocacy group called the Business Travel Coalition, expects some worried corporate travelers to cancel trips to Europe.(ap)

China welcomes IMF backing to make yuan world reserve currency

BEIJING - China on Saturday welcomed backing from IMF experts that the yuan should be included in its reserve currencies, saying the move would strengthen the world’s financial system. Now the world’s second-largest economy, China asked last year for the yuan to be added to the elite basket of SDR currencies, but until recently it was considered too tightly controlled to qualify. It now looks likely the yuan will be formally admitted to the IMF’s “special drawing rights” currency basket at the end of the month, which would mark a milestone in China’s efforts to become a global economic power. IMF chief Christine Lagarde said the fund now deemed the yuan “meets the requirements to be a ‘freely usable’ currency” -- a key hurdle to joining the yen, dollar, pound and euro as a leading unit in international trade. The yuan hit headlines in August when China’s central bank devalued the currency and said it would use a more market-oriented system to calculate the point around which the currency can trade each day. The move sent markets into a tailspin as investors took it as a sign of slowing growth in China, a key driver of the world economy, but the central bank on Saturday said such reforms had taken it closer to joining the SDR basket. “China thinks that the inclusion of the RMB (yuan) into the SDR basket will strengthen the representativeness and the attraction of the SDR (and) that it will improve the existing international monetary sys-

tem,” the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) added. “It will have win-win benefits both for China and the world.” The yuan has rapidly grown in importance in recent years as China -- the world’s top trading nation -- has used it to settle more of its commerce, and made it directly convertable with more currencies. Including the Chinese currency in the SDR would likely boost demand for yuan-denominated assets among central banks, and give it a sheen of respectability at a time when many investors are questioning Beijing’s ability to manage the slowing economy. Lagarde said IMF experts ruled Beijing had addressed “all remaining operational issues” required for SDR inclusion, which will be decided by the executive board at a November 30 meeting. That would mark an about turn from the beginning of August -- before the yuan devaluation -- when the Fund said the currency was not freely usable enough to be included in the basket. Despite the recent misgivings, there has been strong pressure for the IMF to act now as the SDR basket is only reviewed every five years. If a decision to include the yuan is made this month, the actual inclusion could take place as late as September 30, 2016, giving Beijing more time to prepare. (afp)

Suratmika hopes that treatment facilities are making preparations for a potential surge in dengue cases, by doing things like having enough beds available for patents who need to be hospitalized from dengue. “Currently Tabanan has five public health centers and two hospitals, one of which is private,” he said. NEGARA - A number of efforts are being made to help prevent criminal activity amongst youths. Such efforts include an aggressive information campaign conducted by police visits to schools. Each subdistrict police station is involved in a program to visit schools and provide counselling related to teenage issues. Negara subdistrict police carried out an information session on on Tuesday (Nov. 10) at the SMK PGRI Negara vocational school. Here the police provided information about various issues that teenagers are prone to be affected such as such as drugs, alcohol and promiscuity. Outside of school hours, students are also counselled about following traffic regulations, especially on highways. “We provide information to students about the hazards and legal risks of certain behaviours and actions, so that they are aware of some of the potential impacts of committing such actions. We also invite them to get involved in positive activities,” said Chief of the Negara subdistrict police Made Prihenjagat after talking to a group of students. According to Prihenjaga, the counselling and sharing of information will take place over three days in an effort to prevent students form becoming criminals. Badung towers evading levies

MANGUPURA - There are an ever increasing number of both telecom towers and water tanks in Badung. As of yet the local government has yet to set forth applicable regulations regarding which ones are subject to levies and which ones are not. Head of the Badung Transportation, Communication and Information Agency, I Wayan Weda Dharmaja, recently stated that rooftops “towers” or “camouflaged towers” are presently not subject to levies. “According to Transportation Agency regulations, towers under six meters high have no regulations governing them nor applicable levies,” said Weda, after attending the

meeting of the Special Committee of the Regional Bylaw Revision on Tower Levies. He also explained that water tanks or transmitters that are located on a second floor are not considered as towers and thus are also not subject to levies. Apparently many telecom and water service providers are aware of this loophole in the regulations because according to yesterdays’ measuring of several such towers, all of them measured just under 6 feet,” he explained. Also: “A decree issued by four ministers, states that rooftop towers that measureless that six meters do not require a permit,” he added. When asked whether the govern-

ment of Badung plans to impose levies on towers that are less than 6 meters tall, Weda said that his office is continuing to refer to the existing rules. “We are applying existing rules in accordance with the decree of the four ministers,” he said. Weda admitted that the existence of rooftop towers was not been discussed in the meeting of the Special Committee of the Regional Bylaw Revision on Tower Levies. “We will be putting this onto the agenda for discussion for regional bylaws. Badung, only two types of telecom towers are not currently subject to levies. Revision of the regional bylaw has stagnated because there is a lack of clarity regarding the rules. In fact, the general provisions of Article 1 of Regional Bylaw No. 5/2013 describe telecom towers as any structure that supports a telecom network whose design and construction are tailored to the needs of the telecom networks. “I think that rooftop towers and water tank belonging to a telecom companies with the intended use of obtaining profits, should logically be subject to levies,” added Aryanta. Myanmar president says transition of power will be smooth

YANGON, Myanmar — Myanmar’s president vowed Sunday to abide by the law to ensure a smooth transition to a new government next year, after his ruling party was trounced in the Nov. 8 general election. President Thein Sein, whose Union Solidarity and Development Party lost by a landslide to the National League for Democracy of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, spoke at a meeting with the leaders of more than 70 political parties to discuss the period before power is handed over early next year when the new Parliament is seated. “We have successfully held the crucial election (leading) from the current transition period toward the transformation of our country,” Thein Sein, an ex-general, said, referring to his leadership of the first elected government after al-

Thein Sein won praise from some of the leaders for his government’s holding a transparent, free and fair election, and accepting the results with grace. The Shan ethnic minority in the northeast says the army has recently stepped up attacks against them.

Eight ethnic armed groups recently signed a nationwide ceasefire agreement with the government, and political parties will participate in the drafting of a framework for a political dialogue for a permanent solution to those groups’ demands. Turkey: Suicide bomber wounds 5 Turkish police during raid

ANKARA, Turkey — A suicide bomber opened fire on Turkish police and then blew himself up during their raid on a suspect Islamic State militant hideout near the border with Syria, injuring five police officers as G-20 leaders were gathering for a summit, authorities said Sunday. The Gaziantep governor’s office said the suicide bomber died in the raid late Saturday on the fifth-floor apartment in Gaziantep city. Two women were detained while three children were being placed in protection. Police seized explosive materials and several machine guns during the raid, the statement said. The raid came hours after Turkish soldiers clashed with IS militants who fired at them near Gaziantep. Four militants were killed. It was not clear if the two incidents were connected. Meanwhile, at least seven suspected militants were picked up in

EL-ARISH, Egypt — Egyptian officials in the Sinai Peninsula say police killed 15 Sudanese migrants and wounded another eight who were trying to jump the border fence into Israel. The officials say police opened fire on the migrants Sunday after they ignored warning shots and sprinted toward the fence. The security forces arrested another eight Sudanese migrants who were not wounded.

Israel’s Interior Ministry says more than 45,000 African migrants and asylum seekers are in Israel. Many say they are fleeing conflict and persecution and are seeking refugee status. Israel says they are economic migrants whose swelling numbers threaten the country’s Jewish character. All Egyptian officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media. (ap)

Indonesia to announce AirAsia crash probe results Nov 25

JAKARTA - Indonesia will on November 25 announce the results of an investigation into the AirAsia crash last year that killed 162 people, the committee probing the case said Saturday. The Airbus A320-200 went down in the Java Sea on December 28 in stormy weather during what was supposed to be a short trip from

the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore. “We plan to announce the report on November 25,” Soerjanto Tjah-

jono, head of Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee, told AFP. In the preliminary report in January, investigators who went through the black boxes discovered that prior to the crash the jet had climbed fast through large storm clouds and that

the stall alarms started going off. They also revealed that Flight QZ8501’s less experienced French co-pilot, Remi Plesel, was flying the plane before it went down, rather than Captain Iriyanto, a former fighter pilot who had around 20,000 hours of flying time.

An investigator at the committee said they finished the final draft of the report and distributed it to several countries for feedback. Countries which got copies included France, the manufacturer of the aircraft, and the US, which made some of the plane’s components. (afp)

Court sentences 2 to death for drug smuggling

JAKARTA — An Indonesian court sentenced two men on Friday to death on charges of smuggling the largest amount of methamphetamine ever confiscated in the country. The National Narcotics Agency in January found more than 862 kilograms (1,900 pounds) of the illegal drug worth about 1.6 trillion rupiah ($116.8 million) in a car in western Jakarta and arrested nine people. Two of them, Wong Chi Ping, a Hong Kong resident and the alleged syndicate leader, and Indonesian ship captain Ahmad Salim Wijaya, were tried separately and convicted and sentenced Friday at West Jakarta District Court. Judges in the trials concluded that there were no reasons for lenience and both defendants deserved death sentences. Wong was reportedly wanted in seven countries — China, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, United States, the Philippines and Indonesia. Their verdicts brought the number of people who have reportedly received death sentences this year in Indonesia for drug trafficking to at least 10. Three other Hong Kong residents, three Indonesians and one Malaysian were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 15 years to life. JAKARTA - When Indonesia’s anti-drugs czar announced plans to guard a death-row prison island with crocodiles, the government rushed to explain that it was just a joke, but on Friday Budi Waseso said he was now thinking of using tigers and piranha fish too. Media quoted the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) chief as saying that he had already obtained

two crocodiles from a farm to study their power and aggression and may ultimately put as many as 1,000 in place to keep convicts from escaping. “The number will depend on how big the area is, or whether perhaps to combine them with piranhas,” he told reporters, according to the rimanews.com portal. “Because the (prison) personnel numbers are
