LOS ANGELES - American pop star Kesha on Tuesday sued her producer Dr. Luke for allegedly abusing her sexually and emotionally for years, while threatening to harm her career. Famous for hits such as “TiK ToK” and “We R who we R,” Kesha, 27 -- who signed with his Kemosabe label at 18 -charged the producer, real name Lukasz Gottwald, forced her to take drugs and drink alcohol so that he could abuse her sexually when she was under the influence, court documents show. The singer also said that she remembered waking up naked after Gottwald, 41, forced her to take some pills, but that she could not remember how she got where she awoke. She also alleged that Gottwald’s berating of her as overweight caused her bulimia. She has said publicly she went to rehabilitation for the eating disorder. Kesha further alleged that her pro-
ducer alienated her from her family when she moved to Los Angeles, and threatened to destroy her career if she reported these incidents. Dr. Luke maintains that Kesha is sullying his name in an effort to cut short her contract. The producer’s attorney, Christine Lepera, called the charges malicious lies. Kesha’s attorney, Mark Geragos, said she is seeking damages, and rejected the producer’s counter-suit. “This is just another pathetic and entirely predictable example of Dr. Luke’s continued abuse, and a misguided attempt to keep Kesha under his tyrannical control,” he argued. “This lawsuit has absolutely no basis

DENPASAR - The handicraft export of Bali showed quasi-growth as a result of the growth that could only be enjoyed by entrepreneurs or large investors. Chairman of the Center for Business Economic Data Analysis, the Faculty of Economics, University of Udayana, Dr. Sudjana Budhi, worried about such conditions that could make the small artisans thrown out of the market. “Meanwhile, newcomers came to dominate the market, so that in just a matter of time the small crafters will get out of the business as craftsmen,” said Sudjana Budhi, in Denpasar. According to him, craftsmen were artists without having a business skill, so that their life was governed by the market

TABANAN - The price of organic rice per kilogram in the community is quite tempting. At the moment, each kilogram is sold for IDR 25,000. As the central region for rice production, Tabanan itself has three groups of farmers having produced organic rice and has certification from the Seloliman Organic Certification Institute (LeSOS). The area which produces organic rice covers 34.5 hectares of land with crops reaching 6 tons per hectare so that the total organic rice yielded within a planting period reaches 207 tons. Budana. For the chemical-free requirement of the air, the farmer groups wishing to grow organic rice should protect their land with trees with a minimum height of 10 meters and a radius of 1 kilometer from the non-organic land. With these strict requirements, land that could grow organic rice was located in an area upstream, so the that the conditions for the water used to irrigate would be free from chemicals. Farmer groups in Tabanan having successfully achieved the LeSOS status and produced organic rice includes the farmer group of Subak Somia Pertiwi with certificate number LSPO-005-IDN 010 in 2010. This farmers group planted local red rice in an area of 26.5 hectares. Then, the farmer group of Subak Bantas got certification in 2013 number LSPO005-IDN planted fragrant pandan rice in a 3 hectare area. The last was the farmer group of Subak Keloncing
who planted rice on 5 hectares of land. “At Subak Bantas, of the 40 hectares of paddy fields undergoing the certification process, only 3 hectares met the criteria and at Subak Keloncing, only five hectares qualified for a total of 98 hectares. In the future, the entire area is expected to qualify for certification,” he said. To encourage farming in Tabanan to be free from chemicals, added Budana, his party continuously provides farmer groups with coaching on the preparation of documents and the facilities and infrastructure needed in order to be free from chemicals. He explained that the implementation of organic farming has been set forth in the regulations of the Ministry of Agriculture No.64/2013 on organic farming systems concerned with the regulations governing the guidance and supervision, the origin of organic products, labeling, certification, production facilities for organic agriculture. SEMARAPURA – A prolonged dry season has made the Klungkung Fire Brigade vigilant at all times these days. They have increased their patrol around the villages, especially to areas categorized as being prone to fire, as a preventive measure to anticipate fire incident. Section Head of the Fire Brigade for Klungkung’s Public Works, Wayan Toya, when contacted on Tuesday (Oct 14) said that his party had conducted a mapping of fire-prone areas in Klungkung County. The map ranged from densely populated
urban areas, to villages, to the hill areas in the three subdistricts regularly afflicted by fire incident every year. “We are monitoring these points continuously. Hence, the anticipation and prevention of a fire incident can be done faster,” he said. He pointed out that the fire on Bukit Jati, Timuhun village, Banjarangkan, on Monday scorched several hectares of land. The fire then approached the slopes of the hill and made residents wary. Other than in Banjarangkan, similar threats often occurred in the area between Buluh hills and the slopes of local hills in Dawan subdistrict. Nusa Penida was also
said to experience almost identical conditions. Moreover, most areas of Nusa Penida consist of hilly territories. “With this dry weather, the hills become very prone to fire,” he said. Dealing with fires on the hills, he admitted was quite difficult. Aside from a restricted number of fire trucks, the terrain poses geographical challenges. Nevertheless, his party was also grateful that after coordinating with relevant agencies his party gotten an additional fire truck. In all they now have a total of four trucks. The Head of Tabanan Agriculture, Food Crops and Horticulture Agency, Nyoman Budana, explained that the label of ‘organic rice’ was not only an indication that the crop had not had chemical fertilizers applied. According to Budana, to meet the requirements of organic rice, the rice planting also needs to comply with some rules and procedures set forth by the LeSOS. “It is not easy to comply with the requirements consistently pursuant to the SNI guidelines,” he said. To start planting organic rice, farmer groups need to plant for three years before getting a pure result without chemical compounds. Apart from the land requirements, the water sources also need to be free of chemicals. “Similarly, the air may not contain any chemicals. So, if a area of land is planted with organic rice, but the paddy fields on either side are still applying chemical fertilizers, it does not qualify for organic status,” said

Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

The companies are covering up to $20,000 for the procedure and annual storage costs, NBC said, citing sources at the Silicon Valley firms. Queried about the reports by AFP, Facebook and Apple declined to comment. According to the online forum eggsurance.com. the procedure is gaining popularity as more women delay plans to start a family. “Women today are at a cultural and generational crossroads. We have the same career expectations and demands as men,” says a post on the eggsurance.com website. “As our biological clocks tick away, we must establish ourselves in the workplace, find the right mate and become financially secure enough to establish a family.” According to the website, citing US government data, 20 percent of
women wait until age 35 to have their first child. Around one third of women aged 35-39 have fertility problems and the proportion increases to 64 percent when women are 40-44 years old. According to NBC, Facebook recently began covering the costs of egg freezing, and Apple will begin in January. The moves come with tech firms facing renewed pressure over diversity in a male-dominated sector. In recent weeks, major tech firms have been looking at the issue with “diversity reports” that examine the composition of the workforce. Microsoft reported earlier this month that its staff was only 29 percent women. At Google, the figure was 30 percent. For Facebook, the percentage of women was 31 percent, but just 15 percent in technical jobs. The new benefits are expected to help companies like Facebook and Apple attract more women. At the same time, experts point out that freezing is a relatively new procedure that does not guarantee a successful pregnancy.

No safety problems were detected. The studies were paid for by the U.S. company that developed the treatment, Advanced Cell Technology, and were published online Tuesday in the journal, Lancet. Dr. Robert Lanza, one of the study authors, said it was significant

DENPASAR - The Bank Indonesia (BI) will oversee every transaction of foreign exchange occurred in the foreign exchange traders (PVA). This policy is meant to respond to the crime of money laundering taking advantage of the non-bank foreign exchange operations (KUPVA). “Now, the money laundering is made through dollar. So, when the transaction of a great amount is exchanged to money changer, it needs questioning because many transactions are alleged to pose money laundering,” said Senior PVA Supervisor, Payment System Policy Department of Bank Indonesia, Fathurrahman, in Denpasar, Tuesday (Oct 14). According to him, the non-bank foreign exchange operations basically served the exchange of dollar banknotes in a small amount or for people who were not bankable. On that account, if there was a foreign
currency transaction whose value was at least equivalent to IDR 100 million should be reported to the Center for Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis (PPATK). “Logically, exchanging dollars in a large amount must be done through a bank because foreign exchange traders only serve dollar exchange in small amount like the denomination of 5 dollars or 10 dollars, for example,” he said. It was said that his party also prohibited the non-bank foreign exchange operations to transfer funds in order to avoid money laundering. The policy was stipulated in the pro-
visions of Bank Indonesia No.16/15/ PBI/2014 on non-bank foreign exchange operations that revoked some provisions number 12/22 in 2010 on foreign exchange traders. “This policy comes into effect on January 1, 2015. It sets forth the foreign exchange traders to no longer act as a provider of the fund transfer services,” said Representative Head of Bank Indonesia for Region III Bali-Nusra, Benny Siswanto. It was mentioned, with the existence of the policy, the central bank also had the authority to make recommendations to the authorities if any violations were found in the
practice of foreign exchange. This new BI regulation was expected to become something important in the endeavor to prevent crime, primarily the money laundering. “The number of non-bank foreign exchange operations in BaliNusra reached 122 licensed businesses. They mostly operate in Badung as a main tourist destination. They consist of 67 headquarters and 309 branch offices. The transaction reaches IDR 13.5 trillion,” he said. Meanwhile, based on the data
on the industrial development of central BI, the number of licensed non-bank foreign exchange operations increased until August 2014, namely 916 headquarters throughout Indonesia. Based on the distribution of the total industry throughout Indonesia, there were 916 licensed non-bank foreign exchange operations consisting of 14 percent in Denpasar (128 traders), 38 percent in Jakarta (346 traders), 13 percent in Batam (122 traders), 5 percent in Medan (49 traders) and 4 percent in Pontianak (37 traders). The total transactions carried out by the non-bank foreign exchange operations increased, with the average purchase throughout 2014 reaching IDR 7.9 trillion per month. tracted public attention including foreign travelers because of its uniqueness. Just imagine, around 3:00 p.m., hundreds of customary villagers faced one another and mutually attacked by throwing tipat (diamond-shaped rice bag) and bantal (rectangular glutinous snack wrapped in coconut leaf). At least, tens of thousands of pieces of tipat and bantal milled around in the air when the war took place.
Exposed to the tipat and bantal was actually painful. However, in the implementation of the tradition last Tuesday, the pain was apparently not felt. All customary villagers seemed to get dissolved in a lively festivity and excitement of the tipatbantal war. Participants looked so happy and zealous in carrying out the tradition. Even, numerous spectators were finally interested to get involved in the war.

Chief of Kapal customary village, AA Gede Dharmayasa, explained that the tipat-bantal war was carried out in sasih kapat or the fourth month in Balinese calendar (October). This time, the tipat-bantal war was held to coincide with the petirtan alit ceremony. According to him, Kapal customary village consisted of 18 hamlets with a total of 2,475 families. Each family submitted a minimum of 3 pieces of tipat and 3 pieces of bantal to be used in the war. No less interestingly, after the war, the tipat-bantal pieces were collected back to be swept away into the river or placed in the rice fields to increase soil fertility. He said the tipat-bantal war tradition related to the agricultural sector of Kapal community, as an expression of gratitude to God for the graces having been extended especially the abundant harvest. This tradition was always held each year. However, it was not held last year because of declining harvest yields. The tipat-bantal war tradition can be found in a number of ancient literatures. For instance, in the Tabuh Rah Pengangon palm-manuscript is described about the conditions of Kapal village in ancient time until the development of the tipat-bantal war tradition. It is mentioned that Kapal village experienced a famine resulting in mess in the people’s life. Then, Ki Kebo Iwa attempted to invoke the way out to the Creator by doing meditation at Purusadha
Temple. At that time, he got revelation from Lord Shiva Pasupati to implement the Aci Rare Angon by means of delivering tipat-bantal as a symbol of Purusha (masculine aspect) and Pradhana (feminine aspect) in the universe as the source of life. (kmb25)

On Tuesday morning (Oct 14), a Lithuanian citizen, Victoras Lisenkovas, 41, was taken by Bali Police officers to the Bali Prosecutor’s Office to be further handed over to Denpasar Prosecutor’s Office. In this case, the suspect working as a drill handyman in his home country would be charged with two articles due to bringing crystal meth weighing 3,774 grams net. Over the case, as mentioned in the file of the handover, the suspect was charged with Article 113 paragraph 2 of Law No.35/2009 on narcotics and Article 112 paragraph 2 of the same Law. At the Bali Prosecutor’s Office, the file was accepted by the public prosecutor Ketut Sujaya. As mentioned in the file, the suspect was arrested in the arrival terminal of Ngurah Rai International
Airport. On Monday (Aug 11), the suspect came to Bali by Hong Kong Airlines flight number HX709 from Hong Kong and landed at Ngurah Rai Airport, Tuban. The Customs and Excise officer at the airport conducted an examinationof the passenger’s luggage. When examined using the X-ray device, a suspicious object was displayed in his brown suitcase. Due to this suspicious object, the officer checked it further and found six plastic wraps containing the substance of crystal meth with a total net weight of 3,774 grams. Each plastic wrap had been marked with different code, such as A, B and C-1, C-2, C-3 and C-4. Based on this evidence, the officers of Customs and Excise at the Ngurah Rai Airport then handed the case over to the Directorate of Narcotics of Bali Police for further development and investigation. DENPASAR - A ground handling porter at the I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, Bali had to be rushed to hospital due to injuries to his head. The officer, identified as Muchsinin was exposed to the propeller of a Wings Air ATR-72, injuring the rear right side of his head. Spokesperson for the Angkasa Pura I Ngurah Rai Airport, Shively Sanssouci, when asked, confirmed the occurance of the incident of Tuesday (Oct 14). According to her statement, the the accident happened at 11:40 a.m. The Wings Air aircraft with hull code PK-WGL and flight number WON 1888 carried 46 passengers to Labuan Bajo. The incident began when a ground handling porter at PT Enggang Aero Service was loading passenger luggage onto the aircraft compartment of the Wings Air plane. After having loaded all the luggage, the porter then left the compartment on the right fuselage near the propeller. “While walking to the front of the aircraft, the victim had been warned by his colleagues not to pass through the side of the fuselage when the engine started. Customary village cheif, I Nyoman Suparka, said that such en mass the cremation rituals en mass were regularly held once every five years. The Ngaben was held for 37 bodies- 22 ngelungah (minors) and 2 memukur (post cremation). According to Suparka, the funding for the mass cremation event was obtained from independent sources from local villagers. Each body cost IDR 7 million, ngelungah (IDR 130,000) and me-
mukur (IDR 3.5 million). “Meanwhile, the other members of the customary village are imposed upon with a compulsory donation of IDR 150,000 per family, with a total village membership of 240 families,” said Suparka. He said that the mass cremation ceremony was held to evoke a sense of mutual cooperation and the spirit of togetherness as well as to ease the economic burden of the Sandan community, mostly consisting of farmers. “We hope this activity can ease the economic burden of the local community considering that the majority of people work as farmers,” he said.
Suparka added that the mass cremation reached its peak on the Buda (Wednesday) Paing Landep and was officiated over by Ida Pedanda from Griya Ole. In addition to mass cremation, the procession was also resumed with a mass tooth filing ritual. The Regent of Tabanan, Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti, explained also confirmed that the mass cremation was expected to ease the economic burden of the local community. Prosecutors contend that in August at his Goleta home, Holzer grabbed kitchen knives and attacked his 73-year-old father; then his sons, ages 10 and 13, as they slept; then his 74-year-old mother and the family dog. Authorities say Holzer then called the police emergency dispatcher to report killing his family. Authorities say Holzer, who had no criminal history, told detectives that the killings were his destiny.

Fossils of ancient human at Gilimanuk belong to Mongoloid race and settled in 195 BC to 425 AD. The museum stands on a very spacious lands, even the outdoor area is equipped with sufficient parking space. However, the weather in this region is very hot as the location is near the beach and lacks for shade trees. A number of other buildings units can also be found in the site area, but the condition is not feasible to use for showroom. Since it was built in 1994, the three-storied building has never been repaired. Condition of the building has an impact on the number of visitors coming to the museum. Later, local government through the Education, Youth, Culture and Tourism Agency developed the museum. With tranquil location and near the bay, it is appro-
priately used for student campground as recently organized. Other than museum building, there are several buildings previously planned for the development of the museum in the form of showroom of site casting. Three buildings storing the fossil discoveries have been in damaged condition for years. Based on information of the museum attendant, the damaged buildings were built with the budget of World Bank. After it was built, unluckily it had not been handed over by the World Bank, so it was difficult to repair. Recently, the Regent of Jembrana, I Putu Artha, observed the museum condition and asked to repair it so as to look better and could draw visitors. Improvement of the Gilimanuk Museum and the surrounding area could attract travelers to make a visit. Moreover, it was supported by the heterogeneous Gilimanuk community. All this time, the tourist visit to the museum was still low. Most visitors consisted of pupils and college students spending holidays. The regent wanted to make sure if the restoration process had been going on properly as initial plan. Restoration to the roof of Kertagosa was scheduled to have been completed on November 13. Local Now TV showed him splashing water on officers beforehand. “Hong Kong police have gone insane today, carrying out their own punishment in private,” said prodemocracy lawmaker Lee Cheuk-yan. “Hong Kong’s values and its rule of law really have been completely destroyed by police chiefs.” Police spokesman Steve Hui said seven officers who were involved have been temporarily reassigned, and that authorities will carry out an impartial investigation. Beijing, meanwhile, issued its harshest condemnations yet of the protests, calling them illegal, bad for business and against Hong Kong’s best interests. The central government has become increasingly impatient with the demonstrations, the biggest challenge its authority since China took control of the former British colony in 1997.

KATMANDU — An avalanche and blizzard in Nepal’s mountainous north have killed 12 people, including foreign trekkers, officials said Wednesday as weather conditions improved. An avalanche on Wednesday buried four Canadians and one Indian trekker in Phu, said Devendra Lamichane, chief administrator of Manang district. The snow buried the trekkers’ bodies and digging them out would take days, he said. Three villagers were killed Monday in the same district, about 160 kilometers (100 miles) northwest of the capital, Katmandu, and their bodies were recovered on Wednesday. In the neighboring Mustang district, four trekkers caught in a blizzard died Tuesday. Rescuers recovered the bodies of the two Poles, one Israeli and one Nepali trekker from the Thorong La pass area. It was initially thought the group had been caught in an avalanche, but government official Yam Bahadur Chokyal said by telephone from Mustang that the four trekkers instead
had been caught in the blizzard and died. He said another 14 foreign trekkers have been rescued so far, and two army helicopters were picking up injured trekkers and flying them to Jomsom town. Chokyal said it was not possible to say how many trekkers were still on the route stranded by the deep snow but several of them have reached safe ground on Wednesday because of improved weather. The rain and snow in Nepal were caused by a cyclone that hit neighboring India several days ago. October is the most popular trekking season in Nepal, with thousands of foreigners hiking around Nepal’s Himalayan mountains. The Thorong La pass is also on the route that circles Mount Annapurna, the world’s 10th highest peak. An avalanche in April just above the base camp on Mount Everest killed 16 Nepalese guides, the deadliest single disaster on the mountain. JAKARTA - An Indonesian suicide bomber has died fighting with the Islamic State organisation in Iraq, a monitoring group said Tuesday, sparking fresh concern from Jakarta authorities who fear the group is spawning a new generation of radicals. The bomber is believed to have died in a weekend attack in Iraq, and police suspect a total of five Indonesians have now been killed while fighting with jihadist groups this year in the Middle East. Reports of foreigners from various countries heading to fight with IS, which controls vast swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria, have raised fears they could return home and launch attacks. Authorities in Indonesia, which has the world’s biggest Muslim population, estimate that around 60 Indonesians have headed to the Middle East to fight with IS but analysts think the real figure may be as high as 200. Indonesia launched a successful crackdown on militants more than a decade ago after a series of deadly attacks, but fears are growing that militants returning from fighting with IS could revive sophisticated
networks. In the latest suspected death, monitoring group SITE and a jihadist website in Indonesia said an Indonesian drove an explosivespacked van into a military base outside Tikrit north of Baghdad on Saturday. The website identified him as Hanzhalah Al-Indunisi, although analysts said this was not his real name. Photos sent out by SITE, which were published on an IS-linked website, showed the alleged attacker reading the Koran and a plume of smoke after the van was driven into the base. It is the second suspected case of an Indonesian becoming a suicide bomber while fighting with IS militants in Iraq this year. Local media reported the first case in February. National police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar said officials were still trying to confirm details of the incident and verify an Indonesian was involved. But if confirmed, he said it would be “serious”. “We have banned people from going there to fight, but they insist on going,” he said, referring to an official ban on support for IS jihadists introduced a few months ago.

JAKARTA - Two French journalists arrested in Indonesia’s restive easternmost region of Papua will face trial for an immigration offence early next week, a lawyer said Tuesday. Thomas Dandois and Valentine Bourrat were arrested in early August for reporting on the separatist movement in Papua for FrancoGerman television channel Arte. “They will be charged with misusing visa permit in a trial which will start on October 20,” their lawyer Aristo Pangaribuan told AFP, adding that the trial will take place at Jayapura district court in Papua. Under Indonesian immigration law such an offence is punishable by up to five years in jail, he added. Dandois was detained at a hotel in the city of Wamena with members of separatist group the Free Papua Movement (OPM), and Bourrat was detained shortly afterwards. They had tourist and not journalist visas. Foreign reporters detained for illegal reporting in Papua have in the past been swiftly deported. Indonesia is deeply sensitive about journalists covering Papua, where a low-level insurgency against the central government has simmered for decades, and rarely grants visas for foreigners to report independently in the region. The OPM has been at the forefront of the fight against the central government in the resource-rich but poor and ethnically Melanesian region.

JAKARTA - Jakarta has launched a multi-billion-dollar scheme to build a huge sea wall to combat flooding as the Indonesian capital sinks, but there is scepticism about its chances of success in a country with a history of corruption and failed megaprojects. The 35 kilometre (22 mile) wall, across the Bay of Jakarta off the city’s northern coast, is the centrepiece of a project that will cost up to $40 billion over three decades, and also includes reclaiming land for 17 new islands. The whole project will form the shape of a Garuda, the mythical bird that is Indonesia’s national symbol. While the aim is to prevent floods, it is hoped up to one million people will live and work on the islands, and help take pressure off a crowded city notorious as one of the world’s most uninviting urban sprawls. Supporters of the project, which officially got under way last week and is run by the Indonesian government with help from Dutch experts, say it is the only long-term solution. “It’s a life-and-death situation,” said Purba Robert M. Sianipar, a senior economics ministry official with a key role in the project, adding hundreds were at risk of losing their lives from severe flooding if action was not taken. However, some wonder whether such an ambitious plan will ever be completed, given Indonesia’s bad record on infrastructure projects, such as plan to build a monorail in Jakarta that was embroiled in a storm of corruption six years ago.
Chief Economics Minister Chairul Tanjung suggested as much at last week’s launch event, saying disagreements with future governments could knock the project off schedule. Others question the approach entirely, saying the project will not stop the city from sinking, while graft is also a major danger, with officials sometimes awarding tenders to unsuitable firms in exchange for large kickbacks. Jakarta has long been hit by floods during the rainy season, when tropical downpours cause rivers to burst their banks and deluge inadequate drainage systems, forcing tens of thousands out of their homes. However in 2007, a new type of flood set alarm bells ringing. Slum neighbourhoods were inundated when a high tide surged over sea defences in northern Jakarta, something that had never happened before and which highlighted the severe land subsidence in many areas. As Jakarta has rapidly grown to a population of about 10 million, increased water extraction for drinking has caused the ground to compact and parts of the city to sink, a problem seen in other coastal conurbations, such as Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok. Parts of coastal north Jakarta,
which is built on soft clay, are sinking as fast as 14 centimetres (5.5 inches) a year, meaning they could be metres below sea level in a few decades, according to those behind the sea wall project. “Basically we are pumping ourselves into the ground,” said Victor Coenen, from Dutch consultants Witteveen and Bos, which devised the master plan for the project. The subsidence also means the 13 rivers in Jakarta may sink below sea level and stop flowing, increasing the risk of inundations. After the 2007 floods -- which forced hundreds of thousands out of their homes -- officials scrambled to come up with a plan. It involves strengthening the current, low sea defences over the next few years to provide temporary protection for north Jakarta, home to more than four million people. Work will then begin on the main wall, which will sit six to eight kilometres (four to five miles) from the coast and will be seven metres (23 feet) above sea level. Construction of the wall will be finished between 2025 and 2030, while development on the islands -- which will have a mix of high-end and low-cost housing -- could take another decade.

Marc Marquez says he felt under much more pressure in his dominant 2014 MotoGP title campaign than when winning the crown as a rookie in ‘13. The Honda rider clinched his second consecutive championship at Motegi on Sunday - an outcome that had long looked inevitable as he won the first 10 races of the season. In 2013 he had edged out Jorge Lorenzo by just four points in a tense late decider. But Marquez said the pressure of expectation this year made it much harder. “Maybe this year looked easy to people, but it was more difficult because last year I didn’t have pressure,” he said. “If I did some mistakes, it was OK because I was a rookie rider. “This year I always looked smiley and happy, but it was really difficult to keep that level and that concentration because people were expecting a lot of things of you. “When I started the season I felt so good. Jorge [Lorenzo] was struggling, Valentino [Rossi] was there but I was able to beat him, Dani [Pedrosa] was struggling a little in some races, so we were able to get the advantage. “But you never know - you can have some injuries, or some
races like Misano or Aragon. You know that during a season you will a minimum of one or two mistakes.” Although Marquez was unbeaten until mid-August, he has only won one race since then. He finished a muted fourth at Brno, and then crashed at both Misano and Aragon. The 21-year-old Spaniard said that weighed heavily on him at Motegi, where finishing behind Lorenzo in second but ahead of remaining points rivals Rossi and Pedrosa guaranteed the title. “Motegi was difficult because it was the first chance to win the title, but especially because we were coming from Misano and Aragon, where I made two mistakes, and I knew that another mistake would be not the end of the world, but not so good for confidence,” said Marquez. “At the first corner I was too scared, I braked too early and many riders passed me. LONDON - Critically injured French Formula One driver Jules Bianchi will not give up his fight for life but the situation remains desperate, his father Philippe said on Tuesday. Speaking to Italy’s Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper in Yokkaichi, Japan, where the 25-year-old Marussia driver is in intensive care, Bianchi senior said it was a miracle his son was still alive. “The situation is desperate. Every time the phone rings we know it could be the hospital to say Jules is dead,” he told the newspaper. “But first they said the first 24 hours were crucial, then it became 72 and now we are still here, with Jules who is fighting. “I see it, I believe it, I speak to him, I know he hears me. The doctors have said that is already a miracle, that nobody has ever survived such a serious accident. But Jules does not give up.” Bianchi has been in hospital since he crashed into a recovery tractor in the wet at the Japanese Grand Prix on Oct. 5. The team said in an update on Tuesday that he remained critical but stable. “The past nine days have been extremely difficult for Jules and his family. As a consequence of the accident at Suzuka, a number of medical challenges have needed to be overcome and the situation remains challenging due to the diffuse axonal traumatic brain injury Jules has sustained,” the team said. The driver’s parents, brother and sister have been at his bedside for the past week while representatives of Ferrari and Marussia have also been on hand. The Gazzetta said FIA medi-
cal commission president Gerard Saillant and Italian professor Alessandro Frati, who flew to Japan after the crash, had returned to Europe after assuring the family that Bianchi was getting the best possible care. The driver’s father said the family were living a nightmare, in unfamiliar surroundings and without knowing what the future might hold. “Maybe when Jules is better ... we can move him to Tokyo and things will be easier. But who knows when that will happen, if it happens. We have no certainties, we can only wait,” he said. “One day he seems a little better, another a bit worse. able to say the same.” He thanked Formula One drivers for their support, with all of them standing in a silent circle before last Sunday’s Russian Grand Prix in a mark of respect for their stricken colleague. “So many people have written to me, I will reply,” he said. “(JeanEric) Vergne, (Fernando) Alonso, (Felipe) Massa have had strong thoughts. (Lewis) Hamilton sent a lovely email saying if he could do anything he was there for us.” Formula One officials have prepared a report into the accident and have made safety proposals, including automatic speed limits and possibly equipping the recovery tractors and cranes with ‘skirts’ in future. Albanian fans had been warned against attending the game between the two Balkan rival nations that have had turbulent relations — mainly over the former ethnic Albanian-dominated Serbian province of Kosovo that declared independence in 2008. “We wanted to continue the match, but Albanian players said they were not psychologically ready,” Serbia captain Branislav Ivanovic said. Both Serbian and Albanian fans have a long history of violence and racial abuse. In October 2010, the Italy-Serbia European Championship qualifier was disrupted in Genoa by violent Serbia fans. Jorge [Lorenzo] was struggling, Valentino [Rossi] was there but I was able to beat him, Dani [Pedrosa] was struggling a little in some races, so we were able to get the advantage. “But you never know - you can have some injuries, or some
races like Misano or Aragon. You know that during a season you will a minimum of one or two mistakes.” Although Marquez was unbeaten until mid-August, he has only won one race since then. He finished a muted fourth at Brno, and then crashed at both Misano and Aragon. LONDON - Critically injured French Formula One driver Jules Bianchi will not give up his fight for life but the situation remains desperate, his father Philippe said on Tuesday. Speaking to Italy’s Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper in Yokkaichi, Japan, where the 25-year-old Marussia driver is in intensive care, Bianchi senior said it was a miracle his son was still alive. “The situation is desperate. Every time the phone rings we know it could be the hospital to say Jules is dead,” he told the newspaper. “But first they said the first 24 hours were crucial, then it became 72 and now we are still here, with Jules who is fighting. “I see it, I believe it, I speak to him, I know he hears me. The doctors have said that is already a miracle, that nobody has ever survived such a serious accident. But Jules does not give up.” Bianchi has been in hospital since he crashed into a recovery tractor in the wet at the Japanese Grand Prix on Oct. 5. The team said in an update on Tuesday that he remained critical but stable. “The past nine days have been extremely difficult for Jules and his family. As a consequence of the accident at Suzuka, a number of medical challenges have needed to be overcome and the situation remains challenging due to the diffuse axonal traumatic brain injury Jules has sustained,” the team said. An avalanche on Wednesday buried four Canadians and one Indian trekker in Phu, said Devendra Lamichane, chief administrator of Manang district. The snow buried the trekkers’ bodies and digging them out would take days, he said. Three villagers were killed Monday in the same district, about 160 kilometers (100 miles) northwest of the capital, Katmandu, and their bodies were recovered on Wednesday. In the neighboring Mustang district, four trekkers caught in a blizzard died Tuesday. Rescuers recovered the bodies of the two Poles, one Israeli and one Nepali trekker from the Thorong La pass area. It was initially thought the group had been caught in an avalanche, but government official Yam Bahadur Chokyal said by telephone from Mustang that the four trekkers instead
had been caught in the blizzard and died. He said another 14 foreign trekkers have been rescued so far, and two army helicopters were picking up injured trekkers and flying them to Jomsom town. Chokyal said it was not possible to say how many trekkers were still on the route stranded by the deep snow but several of them have reached safe ground on Wednesday because of improved weather. The rain and snow in Nepal were caused by a cyclone that hit neighboring India several days ago. October is the most popular trekking season in Nepal, with thousands of foreigners hiking around Nepal’s Himalayan mountains. The Thorong La pass is also on the route that circles Mount Annapurna, the world’s 10th highest peak. An avalanche in April just above the base camp on Mount Everest killed 16 Nepalese guides, the deadliest single disaster on the mountain. Thomas Dandois and Valentine Bourrat were arrested in early August for reporting on the separatist movement in Papua for FrancoGerman television channel Arte. “They will be charged with misusing visa permit in a trial which will start on October 20,” their lawyer Aristo Pangaribuan told AFP, adding that the trial will take place at Jayapura district court in Papua. Under Indonesian immigration law such an offence is punishable by up to five years in jail, he added. Dandois was detained at a hotel in the city of Wamena with members of separatist group the Free Papua Movement (OPM), and Bourrat was detained shortly afterwards. They had tourist and not journalist visas. Foreign reporters detained for illegal reporting in Papua have in the past been swiftly deported. Indonesia is deeply sensitive about journalists covering Papua, where a low-level insurgency against the central government has simmered for decades, and rarely grants visas for foreigners to report independently in the region. JAKARTA - Jakarta has launched a multi-billion-dollar scheme to build a huge sea wall to combat flooding as the Indonesian capital sinks, but there is scepticism about its chances of success in a country with a history of corruption and failed megaprojects. The 35 kilometre (22 mile) wall, across the Bay of Jakarta off the city’s northern coast, is the centrepiece of a project that will cost up to $40 billion over three decades, and also includes reclaiming land for 17 new islands. The whole project will form the shape of a Garuda, the mythical bird that is Indonesia’s national symbol. While the aim is to prevent floods, it is hoped up to one million people will live and work on the islands, and help take pressure off a crowded city notorious as one of the world’s most uninviting urban sprawls. Supporters of the project, which officially got under way last week and is run by the Indonesian government with help from Dutch experts, say it is the only long-term solution. “It’s a life-and-death situation,” said Purba Robert M. Sianipar, a senior economics ministry official with a key role in the project, adding hundreds were at risk of losing their lives from severe flooding if action was not taken. However, some wonder whether such an ambitious plan will ever be completed, given Indonesia’s bad record on infrastructure projects, such as plan to build a monorail in Jakarta that was embroiled in a storm of corruption six years ago.
Chief Economics Minister Chairul Tanjung suggested as much at last week’s launch event, saying disagreements with future governments could knock the project off schedule. Others question the approach entirely, saying the project will not stop the city from sinking, while graft is also a major danger, with officials sometimes awarding tenders to unsuitable firms in exchange for large kickbacks. Jakarta has long been hit by floods during the rainy season, when tropical downpours cause rivers to burst their banks and deluge inadequate drainage systems, forcing tens of thousands out of their homes. However in 2007, a new type of flood set alarm bells ringing. Slum neighbourhoods were inundated when a high tide surged over sea defences in northern Jakarta, something that had never happened before and which highlighted the severe land subsidence in many areas. As Jakarta has rapidly grown to a population of about 10 million, increased water extraction for drinking has caused the ground to compact and parts of the city to sink, a problem seen in other coastal conurbations, such as Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok. Parts of coastal north Jakarta,
which is built on soft clay, are sinking as fast as 14 centimetres (5.5 inches) a year, meaning they could be metres below sea level in a few decades, according to those behind the sea wall project. “Basically we are pumping ourselves into the ground,” said Victor Coenen, from Dutch consultants Witteveen and Bos, which devised the master plan for the project. The subsidence also means the 13 rivers in Jakarta may sink below sea level and stop flowing, increasing the risk of inundations. After the 2007 floods -- which forced hundreds of thousands out of their homes -- officials scrambled to come up with a plan. It involves strengthening the current, low sea defences over the next few years to provide temporary protection for north Jakarta, home to more than four million people. Work will then begin on the main wall, which will sit six to eight kilometres (four to five miles) from the coast and will be seven metres (23 feet) above sea level. Construction of the wall will be finished between 2025 and 2030, while development on the islands -- which will have a mix of high-end and low-cost housing -- could take another decade.

He warned, anyway Kertagosa was a silent witness to the glory of the past era of Klungkung kingdom. Thus, it was the obligation of local government to maintain and preserve its existence. Other than guru piduka and pejati, he also asked local government to hold caru rishi gana exorcism rite. Anyhow, something that had been restored, especially the royal relic, should be returned to the original condition spiritually by ritual. He worried the taksu of Kertagosa would fade out. In this case, the suspect working as a drill handyman in his home country would be charged with two articles due to bringing crystal meth weighing 3,774 grams net. Over the case, as mentioned in the file of the handover, the suspect was charged with Article 113 paragraph 2 of Law No.35/2009 on narcotics and Article 112 paragraph 2 of the same Law. Due to this suspicious object, the officer checked it further and found six plastic wraps containing the substance of crystal meth with a total net weight of 3,774 grams. Each plastic wrap had been marked with different code, such as A, B and C-1, C-2, C-3 and C-4. Based on this evidence, the officers of Customs and Excise at the Ngurah Rai Airport then handed the case over to the Directorate of Narcotics of Bali Police for further development and investigation. DENPASAR - A ground handling porter at the I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, Bali had to be rushed to hospital due to injuries to his head. The officer, identified as Muchsinin was exposed to the propeller of a Wings Air ATR-72, injuring the rear right side of his head. Spokesperson for the Angkasa Pura I Ngurah Rai Airport, Shively Sanssouci, when asked, confirmed the occurance of the incident of Tuesday (Oct 14). According to her statement, the the accident happened at 11:40 a.m. The Wings Air aircraft with hull code PK-WGL and flight number WON 1888 carried 46 passengers to Labuan Bajo. The incident began when a ground handling porter at PT Enggang Aero Service was loading passenger luggage onto the aircraft compartment of the Wings Air plane. After having loaded all the luggage, the porter then left the compartment on the right fuselage near the propeller. “While walking to the front of the aircraft, the victim had been warned by his colleagues not to pass through the side of the fuselage when the engine started. TABANAN - Ngaben or Balinese cremation ritual were held en mass at Sandan customary village, Baturiti, Monday (Oct 13). Customary village cheif, I Nyoman Suparka, said that such en mass the cremation rituals en mass were regularly held once every five years. The Ngaben was held for 37 bodies- 22 ngelungah (minors) and 2 memukur (post cremation). According to Suparka, the funding for the mass cremation event was obtained from independent sources from local villagers. Each body cost IDR 7 million, ngelungah (IDR 130,000) and me-
mukur (IDR 3.5 million). “Meanwhile, the other members of the customary village are imposed upon with a compulsory donation of IDR 150,000 per family, with a total village membership of 240 families,” said Suparka. He said that the mass cremation ceremony was held to evoke a sense of mutual cooperation and the spirit of togetherness as well as to ease the economic burden of the Sandan community, mostly consisting of farmers. “We hope this activity can ease the economic burden of the local community considering that the majority of people work as farmers,” he said.
Suparka added that the mass cremation reached its peak on the Buda (Wednesday) Paing Landep and was officiated over by Ida Pedanda from Griya Ole. In addition to mass cremation, the procession was also resumed with a mass tooth filing ritual. The Regent of Tabanan, Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti, explained also confirmed that the mass cremation was expected to ease the economic burden of the local community. Microsoft reported earlier this month that its staff was only 29 percent women. At Google, the figure was 30 percent. DENPASAR - The Bank Indonesia (BI) will oversee every transaction of foreign exchange occurred in the foreign exchange traders (PVA). This policy is meant to respond to the crime of money laundering taking advantage of the non-bank foreign exchange operations (KUPVA). “Now, the money laundering is made through dollar. So, when the transaction of a great amount is exchanged to money changer, it needs questioning because many transactions are alleged to pose money laundering,” said Senior PVA Supervisor, Payment System Policy Department of Bank Indonesia, Fathurrahman, in Denpasar, Tuesday (Oct 14). According to him, the non-bank foreign exchange operations basically served the exchange of dollar banknotes in a small amount or for people who were not bankable. On that account, if there was a foreign
currency transaction whose value was at least equivalent to IDR 100 million should be reported to the Center for Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis (PPATK). “Logically, exchanging dollars in a large amount must be done through a bank because foreign exchange traders only serve dollar exchange in small amount like the denomination of 5 dollars or 10 dollars, for example,” he said. It was said that his party also prohibited the non-bank foreign exchange operations to transfer funds in order to avoid money laundering. The policy was stipulated in the pro-
visions of Bank Indonesia No.16/15/ PBI/2014 on non-bank foreign exchange operations that revoked some provisions number 12/22 in 2010 on foreign exchange traders. “This policy comes into effect on January 1, 2015. It sets forth the foreign exchange traders to no longer act as a provider of the fund transfer services,” said Representative Head of Bank Indonesia for Region III Bali-Nusra, Benny Siswanto. It was mentioned, with the existence of the policy, the central bank also had the authority to make recommendations to the authorities if any violations were found in the

The total transactions carried out by the non-bank foreign exchange operations increased, with the average purchase throughout 2014 reaching IDR 7.9 trillion per month. MANGUPURA - Thousands of people thronged the Desa and Puseh Temple of Kapal customary village, Mengwi, Tuesday (Oct 14). They looked so vivacious to see the tradition of the tipat-bantal war performed by the local customary villagers. The war tradition at Kapal customary village indeed always at-
tracted public attention including foreign travelers because of its uniqueness. Just imagine, around 3:00 p.m., hundreds of customary villagers faced one another and mutually attacked by throwing tipat (diamond-shaped rice bag) and bantal (rectangular glutinous snack wrapped in coconut leaf). At least, tens of thousands of pieces of tipat and bantal milled around in the air when the war took place.
Exposed to the tipat and bantal was actually painful. However, in the implementation of the tradition last Tuesday, the pain was apparently not felt. All customary villagers seemed to get dissolved in a lively festivity and excitement of the tipatbantal war. Participants looked so happy and zealous in carrying out the tradition. Even, numerous spectators were finally interested to get involved in the war.

Chief of Kapal customary village, AA Gede Dharmayasa, explained that the tipat-bantal war was carried out in sasih kapat or the fourth month in Balinese calendar (October). This time, the tipat-bantal war was held to coincide with the petirtan alit ceremony. According to him, Kapal customary village consisted of 18 hamlets with a total of 2,475 families. Each family submitted a minimum of 3 pieces of tipat and 3 pieces of bantal to be used in the war. No less interestingly, after the war, the tipat-bantal pieces were collected back to be swept away into the river or placed in the rice fields to increase soil fertility. He said the tipat-bantal war tradition related to the agricultural sector of Kapal community, as an expression of gratitude to God for the graces having been extended especially the abundant harvest. This tradition was always held each year. However, it was not held last year because of declining harvest yields. The tipat-bantal war tradition can be found in a number of ancient literatures. For instance, in the Tabuh Rah Pengangon palm-manuscript is described about the conditions of Kapal village in ancient time until the development of the tipat-bantal war tradition. It is mentioned that Kapal village experienced a famine resulting in mess in the people’s life. Then, Ki Kebo Iwa attempted to invoke the way out to the Creator by doing meditation at Purusadha
Temple. At that time, he got revelation from Lord Shiva Pasupati to implement the Aci Rare Angon by means of delivering tipat-bantal as a symbol of Purusha (masculine aspect) and Pradhana (feminine aspect) in the universe as the source of life. (kmb25)

As the central region for rice production, Tabanan itself has three groups of farmers having produced organic rice and has certification from the Seloliman Organic Certification Institute (LeSOS). The area which produces organic rice covers 34.5 hectares of land with crops reaching 6 tons per hectare so that the total organic rice yielded within a planting period reaches 207 tons. Budana. For the chemical-free requirement of the air, the farmer groups wishing to grow organic rice should protect their land with trees with a minimum height of 10 meters and a radius of 1 kilometer from the non-organic land. With these strict requirements, land that could grow organic rice was located in an area upstream, so the that the conditions for the water used to irrigate would be free from chemicals. Farmer groups in Tabanan having successfully achieved the LeSOS status and produced organic rice includes the farmer group of Subak Somia Pertiwi with certificate number LSPO-005-IDN 010 in 2010. This farmers group planted local red rice in an area of 26.5 hectares. Then, the farmer group of Subak Bantas got certification in 2013 number LSPO005-IDN planted fragrant pandan rice in a 3 hectare area. The last was the farmer group of Subak Keloncing
who planted rice on 5 hectares of land. “At Subak Bantas, of the 40 hectares of paddy fields undergoing the certification process, only 3 hectares met the criteria and at Subak Keloncing, only five hectares qualified for a total of 98 hectares. The Head of Tabanan Agriculture, Food Crops and Horticulture Agency, Nyoman Budana, explained that the label of ‘organic rice’ was not only an indication that the crop had not had chemical fertilizers applied. According to Budana, to meet the requirements of organic rice, the rice planting also needs to comply with some rules and procedures set forth by the LeSOS. “It is not easy to comply with the requirements consistently pursuant to the SNI guidelines,” he said. To start planting organic rice, farmer groups need to plant for three years before getting a pure result without chemical compounds. Apart from the land requirements, the water sources also need to be free of chemicals. “Similarly, the air may not contain any chemicals. So, if a area of land is planted with organic rice, but the paddy fields on either side are still applying chemical fertilizers, it does not qualify for organic status,” said

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LOS ANGELES - American pop star Kesha on Tuesday sued her producer Dr. Luke for allegedly abusing her sexually and emotionally for years, while threatening to harm her career. Famous for hits such as “TiK ToK” and “We R who we R,” Kesha, 27 -- who signed with his Kemosabe label at 18 -charged the producer, real name Lukasz Gottwald, forced her to take drugs and drink alcohol so that he could abuse her sexually when she was under the influence, court documents show. The singer also said that she remembered waking up naked after Gottwald, 41, forced her to take some pills, but that she could not remember how she got where she awoke. She also alleged that Gottwald’s berating of her as overweight caused her bulimia. She has said publicly she went to rehabilitation for the eating disorder. Kesha further alleged that her pro-
ducer alienated her from her family when she moved to Los Angeles, and threatened to destroy her career if she reported these incidents. Dr. Luke maintains that Kesha is sullying his name in an effort to cut short her contract. The producer’s attorney, Christine Lepera, called the charges malicious lies. Chairman of the Center for Business Economic Data Analysis, the Faculty of Economics, University of Udayana, Dr. Sudjana Budhi, worried about such conditions that could make the small artisans thrown out of the market. “Meanwhile, newcomers came to dominate the market, so that in just a matter of time the small crafters will get out of the business as craftsmen,” said Sudjana Budhi, in Denpasar. According to him, craftsmen were artists without having a business skill, so that their life was governed by the market

Besides, craftsmen did not have a strong association like the cement plants having built their oligopoly strength so that they could control consumers in the matter of pricing. “This problem is never revealed because most of the policy makers will think that their losses occur due to a lack for skill.
