Force of ‘Gravity’ foils pirates at North American box office Reuters

LOS ANGELES/NEW YORK - The 3D outer space thriller “Gravity” kept a tight grip on U.S. and Canadian box offices over the weekend, eclipsing the debut of Somali pirate drama “Captain Phillips” in a battle between two Oscar hopefuls. “Gravity,” starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as astronauts stranded in space, held the top spot on movie charts for a second weekend, grabbing $44.3 million in domestic ticket sales from Friday through Sunday.

The continued pull of “Gravity” beat the $26 million opening for “Captain Phillips,” a drama starring Tom Hanks in a story based on the real-life hijacking of a U.S. cargo ship. Animated “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” took the No. 3 slot, collecting $14.3 million, according to studio estimates. Both “Gravity” and “Captain Phillips” earned glowing reviews and mentions as likely Oscar contenders. “Gravity” wowed critics with its 3D depictions of space and weightlessness, while Hanks won praise for his portrayal of Captain Richard Phillips, the man taken hostage when Somali pirates seized his ship in 2009. Ninety-seven percent of critics recommended “Gravity” in reviews on the Rotten Tomatoes website, slightly more than the 95 percent for “Captain Phillips.” In “Gravity,” Bullock plays a novice astronaut and engineer alongside Clooney as the mission commander. ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’: Dakota Johnson Is Strapped In

Despite the sands shifting around her, Dakota Johnson is 100 percent committed to “Fifty Shades of Grey” — and the filmmakers are equally firm on keeping their Anastasia Steele. Though popular lore had it that intense chemistry with Charlie Hunnam won Johnson the part, the filmmakers are moving ahead with the “Ben and Kate” actress, a person familiar with the situation told TheWrap. Hunnam abruptly quit the project over the weekend, citing his TV schedule, though multiple sources have told TheWrap that Hunnam underestimated the attention he would receive from the media and rabid “Shades” fans. Anxiety and pressure are to be expected with a movie of this magnitude. But unlike Hunnam, Johnson knows what it’s like to live under a microscope, having grown up in the public eye as the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson. Now, whoever replaces Hunnam will be required to have chemistry with her, rather than the other way around. Multiple sources stress that the filmmakers will build the rest of the cast around her rather than let the new Christian Grey dictate the ensemble, which is expected to include Jennifer Ehle (“Zero Dark Thirty”) as Anastasia’s mother.

hurtling into space with depleting oxygen and remote chances of returning to Earth. The movie took in record sales for an October weekend when it debuted a week ago. Filmgoers kept coming during the week, with many opting to pay for higher-priced 3D tickets. The film scored the best second weekend ever for an IMAX film with a take of $9 million, and North American sales for “Gravity” through Sunday reached an estimated $123.4 million, according to Warner Bros. “It’s word-of-mouth,” said Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution, explaining the film’s remarkable performance, which included a drop of only 21 percent in receipts from the opening weekend which he said was a record for a widerelease film.

“We’re filling theaters in small, medium and large towns throughout North America, and our audience has really spread from (ages) eight to 80,” Fellman added. Though it couldn’t overcome “Gravity,” “Captain Phillips” exceeded predictions for a start of around $21 million. The film cost $55 million to make. “This was a terrific opening for ‘Captain Phillips’ and we’re just beginning,” said Rory Bruer, Sony Pictures’ worldwide president of distribution. “We’re going to be around for a very long time with this film. People are really talking about it,” Bruer added.

CEBU - A powerful earthquake killed at least 73 people on Tuesday as it tore down modern buildings, destroyed historic churches and triggered terrified stampedes across popular tourist islands in the Philippines. Fifteen of the confirmed fatalities were in Cebu, the country’s second most important city and a gateway to some of its most beautiful beaches, the national disaster agency reported. The 7.1-magnitude quake killed another 57 people in the neighbouring island of Bohol, famed for its rolling “Chocolate Hills”, while one other person died on nearby Siquijor, which attracts tourists with its pristine white sands. “I was thrown to the ground by the strength of the quake. Broken glass rained on me,” Elmo Alinsunorin, a guard for a govern-

ment tax office in Cebu, told AFP. “I thought I was going to die.” Authorities said the death toll could still climb, with authorities struggling to assess the extent of the damage in the worst-hit areas of Bohol where roads were impassable and power was cut. Nevertheless, they expressed relief the earthquake occurred on a public holiday, meaning there were fewer people than normal in many of the major buildings that suffered damage. The quake struck at 08:12 (0012 GMT) near Balilihan, a town of about 18,000 people on Bohol, at a depth of 20 kilometres (12 miles), the USGS reported. The town lies across a strait about 60 kilometres from Cebu. Cebu, with a population of 2.5 million people, is the political, economic, educational and cultural centre of the central Philippines. It hosts the country’s busiest port and the

largest airport outside of the capital Manila. It also has a major ship building industry. A university, a school and two shopping

malls, public markets and many small buildings sustained damage in the quake. Continued on page 6
