JAKARTA - Whether or not Mohammad Nazaruddin will be consistent in his further statements or testimonies will more or less be determined by how the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) treats him, a politician said. The KPK is playing an important role in determining the final outcome of Nazaruddin‘s case, Bambang Soesatyo, deputy treasurer of the Golkar Party said here on Sunday. “The public has taken notes of what Nazaruddin has said. And remember, the Indonesian people are no longer stupid as the elites thought,” “Because this case`s political content is so high, we, the public, just hope KPK will remain independent and focus on the legal enforcement aspect,” he said. Bambang also suggested that
the KPK‘s Ethics Committee be involved in solving the case in order to prevent public suspicion of KPK‘s impartiality. “This suggestion is relevant, because many important figures are involved in the Nazaruddin`s case. And we are worried that there is a scenario to let Naxaruddin alone be prosecuted for the bribery case linked to the Sea Games athlete dormitory project and keep other people scot-free,” he said. The involvement of independent parties in solving Nazaruddin‘s case was therefore very crucial to
convince the public. “Because after the KPK was shaken by Nazaruddin`s accusation, is there any guarantee that none of the KPK Leadership will take revenge and try to manipulate or suppress Nazaruddin`s testimony and information. Moreover, Nazaruddin`s bag in which he is believed to have kept many crucial data and exhibits, was seized by the KPK,” he said. According to Bambang, the public hoped Nazaruddin would continue to disclose the alleged involvement of other public figures. And if Nazaruddin suddenly shut his mouth, the public would draw the conclusion that he had been pressured or forced to do so, he said. He said Nazaruddin had become a “ghost” for a number of important people in this country.
“In addition to several leaders of the KPK itself, there are ministers, political elites, and several legislators who have made Nazaruddin their common enemy. Because he is considered to be a threat to their careers,” he said. They would not stay idle now that Nazaruddin had been arrested and brought back to Indonesia. “In view of these issues, it`s difficult for the public to believe and be sure that the KPK will not be intervened by the important figures whose profiles have been torn apart by Nazaruddin,” he said. After his arrival in Jakarta from Colombia on Saturday evening (Aug 13), Muhammad Nazaruddin was sent to the the Police Mobile Brigade Headquarters‘ (Mako Brimob) detention center in Kelapa Dua, Depok, West Java.

Bali News Mumbul Market Taken Over by Investor Bird and Second Hand Items Sellers Removed Singaraja (Bali Post) –
Mumbul market or known to be the second hand market at Ahmad Yani, Singaraja, silently wanted by investors, one of them being an owner of a fast food restaurant, suspected will remove sellers of birds and second hand items that are trading here. According to information the market hasn’t been managed well with the second floor uncompleted repaired since several years ago. Many of its lamps off and bulbs stolen as doors to the rooms were never locked and never used by any sellers. Meanwhile first floor spaces are much more crowded and many bird sellers also second hand items have filled it up for years. Operational Director of Regional Companies (PD) for Buleleng Markets, Made Agus Yudiarsana, last Sunday (14/8) confirmed the situation. So far the investors have got close to the Directors and will held a MoU soon to make use of the facility. For sure the bird sellers will be relocated to Banyuasri Market while for second hand items are still
unknown. He added besides relocating, regional government has also planned to relocate shops on the north of Mumbul Market as the state of the building has blocked the market all this time and could be removed due to this investment. “We relocate bird sellers there as we are planning to make a bird market in Banyuasri,” he explained. Increasing tourist visits, cruise ship anchors in Benoa Harbor Surabaya (Bali Post)—
Endeavor to increase the Bali tourism was manifested by the visit of Sun Princess luxury cruise ship in Benoa Harbor carrying about 1,800 passengers. would be 30 cruise ships. Based on the existing record of cruise ship visit to Indonesia, Bali occupied the first position with 48,000 cruise ship passengers or 35 percent of the total foreign tourist visiting Indonesia, especially tourists by cruise ship. “This trend is becoming a serious concern of Pelindo III Benoa to anticipate the increase in cruise ship visits,” said Iwan, a former Public Relations Manager of Pelindo III. According to him, in the future the cruise ship service could be provided in the Tanah Ampo Harbor where it was now being improved by government of Karangasem Regency. The regional tourism certainly should be continued to market the tourism potential so that it could be increasingly in demand. During the day, Pasek did saw three unknown people sitting in front the house but didn’t suspect they were the robbers as there is a police car in front. Sriawan admitted Gajah Mada area has violation the most and his side have tried hard to socialise it for people to obey the rules for everyone’s comfort yet the response is still low even though there is a parking space given already. “We also have told restaurant and shop owners to tell their customers to park their vehicles on
the prepared area,” he explained. Remembering the intensity of violation in the night time is high, the crane punishment will not only happen on day time only but also on night time. Sriawan stated this punishment will be applied on the 17th August 2011 Independence Day as right now the Agency is still focused on the traffic for Independence Day and Bali Province Anniversary. For tourist object or historical sites
Potential of ancient villages not fully managed BULELENG Regency has many ancient villages lining on the high plains along the Tejakula and Banjar Subdistrict. In Banjar Subdistrict lie few villages like the Sidatapa, Pedawa, Cempaga, Tigawasa and Banyusri. Meanwhile, Tejakula Subdistrict has Sembiran, Julah and other villages with close relationship to ancient villages in Bangli Regency. As a village with historical values, the ancient villages definitely have many distinctive cultural traditions which should be maintained, not merely for the sake of tourism, but more as an asset to trace back the pastime history. As tourist destination, those ancient villages seem to have not been managed optimally. It is indicated by the lack of attention extended by local government to preserve the tourism potential. In reality, if these objects are managed accordingly they are ascertained to be able to boost the tourism development in Northern Bali. Moreover, many foreign tourists are now looking for the attraction of ancient villages. One of the evidences showing the lack of government’s attention to preserve the ancient villages is the non-existence of facilities indicating the direction to the ancient villages. Although there are promotional tools of the objects such as signboard pointing out the location of the ancient village, they are left damaged even for years. This condition happens to the signboard pointing out the village of Sidatapa, Cempaga, Tigawasa and Pedawa in Banjar Subdistrict. A wooden signboard whose paint has been obsolete even almost collapses as the pole has decayed. figure of the village, was now very intensively arranging the Pedawa Village. One of the measures undertaken was preserving the ancient house with historical values. If only relying on the natural scenery of course Pedawa Village would not have a specific value. “We even highlight the historical value,” he said.
According to Sudarmaja, the existing obstacle for tourism development was the matter of road infrastructure. He added the road access to Pedawa Village, Tigawasa Village and other ancient village was in damaged condition. At Pedawa, the village road had even been repaired but damaged again. “Most constraints of tourism development lie in the infrastructure such as the roads that are easily damaged,” he said. Meanwhile, the Head of Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency, Putu Tastra Wijaya, did not dismiss if the management of the ancient village tourist destination in Buleleng had not been maximal. Tastra said that Buleleng was indeed known to have numerous ancient village attractions. They were located in Banjar Subdistrict including the Sidatapa, Cempaga, Tigawasa and Pedawa Village or often called SCTP. In addition, the other ancient villages could also be found in Tejakula Subdistrict such as Sembiran and Julah Village. Unfortunately, the potential of those ancient villages was now in a name only. Meanwhile, in reality a lot of houses belonging to local residents had been refurbished and converted into a modern house. This situation was unable to be dammed by government where community as the homeowners had the authority to renovate and could not be intervened. “We can only appeal in or-
der those houses are well maintained as the original. But, it’s difficult because the residents themselves want to reform them into a modern house,” he said. According to Tastra, the concrete effort undertaken to restructure and preserve the ancient villages in two subdistricts was by building a mockup of the original ancient house. Unfortunately, only one unit of ancient house could be established and located at Sembiran Village. The house had now become a government asset and equipped with attendants. Occasionally, it could be used as a venue to entertain visiting foreign tourists. “Due to restricted budget, we could only build a single house. We wish to build more or bought the ancient houses, but it is impossible due restrictedness of budget,” he explained. How about the foreign tourist visit to those ancient villages? Tastra said that foreign tourist visit indeed existed but was relatively small. Even, he admitted to have no valid data on the tourist arrivals. This happened because his party found difficulties as there was no officer who escorted the foreign tourists when paying a visit to those ancient villages. Automatically, the foreign tourist visits were not recorded properly. “I think it is our constraint in the field and our management is indeed still far from the expectation. However, we are still trying to manage the tourism of ancient village to be better in the future,” he said. (kmb/ole)

Eighteen Balinese artists and humanists received Dharma Kusuma award, the highest award in the field of arts and culture provided by Bali Government. Presentation of the award in the form of certificate and golden badge weighing 20 grams was performed by Governor of Bali Made Mangku Pastika on the fifty-third anniversary of the Bali Province in Puputan Margarana Square, Renon, Denpasar, Sunday (Aug 14). According to the Head of Bali Cultural Services, I Ketut Suastika, the eighteen award recipients came from various fields of the art. They consisted of Ida Rai Agung Oka Dwija (dancer and gamelan artist from Klungkung), I Nyoman Astita (gamelan artist from Denpasar), I
Made Ruda (gamelan artist from Denpasar), Luh Menek (dancer from Buleleng), Nyoman Suweca (traditional playwright from Buleleng), Tjokorda Raka Kerthyasa (humanist from Gianyar), Tjokorda Raka Tisnu (dancer from Gianyar), I Wayan Nartha (puppeteer from Gianyar), I Made Djimat (dancer from Gianyar), I Ketut Sudiasa (traditional playwright from Badung), I Gusti Ketut Mungkreg (traditional playwright from Badung), Ida Wayan Oka Granoka (humanist from Karangasem), I Ketut Ruma (litterateur from Karangasem), I Nengah Selen (gamelan artist from Jembrana), Ida Bagus Pudja (dancer and gamelan artist from Klungkung) and I Gusti Ngurah Gede Pemecutan (fine artists from
Denpasar). Similar awards were also given to two meritorious figures in the development of arts and culture who had died, such as Ida Bagus Tugur (mask artist from Klungkung) and I Wayan Sangkur (traditional architect from Bangli). “Dharma Kusuma is the highest award in field of arts and culture presented to the artists from all over the regencies/city based on the assessment team of Cultural Advisory Assembly (Listibiya). The award was given to the artists who had given much contribution to the field of arts and culture,” said Suastika. According to Suastika, selection of the names of Dharma Kusuma candidates was organized by Listibiya Bali in collaboration
with the team of regency/city. Aside from considering the real works of the artists and humanists, the team also asked the public opinions. With this award, the artists were expected to be more motivated to continue the progress in preserving the Balinese art and culture. “By this award, we expect the artists would remain vivacious to play their functions and motivate the young artists in their fields. By doing so, those fields will continue to grow,” he said. Suastika also added that Dharma Kusuma award was given routinely by Bali Government every year since 1974. During the period of 37 years, it had been recorded 413 artists and humanists who received the awards. Aside from being provided for Balinese
artists, similar awards were also given to foreigners who had devoted themselves to the advancement and development of Balinese art and culture. Among others, they were Sekar Jaya Balinese Gamelan Troupe from the United States, Sekar Jepun Balinese Gamelan Troupe from Japan and Urs Ramseyer (Swiss humanist). “Participation of foreign nationals in the development and preservation of Balinese art and culture can give a color to cultural diversity in the international community as well as motivate the younger generation of Bali as the heir and successor of the national culture to act more optimally in the discovery and preservation of Balinese art and culture,” he asserted. Argentine president dominates unusual primary vote Associated Press Writer
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Argentine President Cristina Fernandez got half the votes against a divided opposition in Sunday’s primary, giving her re-election campaign a feeling of invincibility. Three of the nine other candidates were battling for second place in Argentina’s first-ever open and simultaneous presidential primary. Fernandez had 50 percent of the votes, Dep. Ricardo Alfonsin had 12 percent, former President Eduardo Duhalde 12 percent and Socialist Santa Fe Gov. Hermes Binner 10 percent with 61 percent of the polling places reporting. The results suggest that unless the opposition unites around a single candidate, Fernandez has a very good chance of winning re-election. The winner on Oct. 23 must get at least 45 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff, or more than 40 percent with a 10 percentage point lead over the second-place finisher in a race with multiple candidates. In her victory speech, Fernandez referred to the loom-
ing global economic crisis and said politicians must ensure Argentina remains independent. “We have to not only take care of our political democracy, but our economic democracy as well,” she said. She also praised voters for what she called an historic advance in Argentina’s democracy. The idea of the open, simultaneous and obligatory primary was meant to force parties to allow voters to choose candidates for president and vice president. Instead, all the parties simply proclaimed their candidates months ago. That turned the primary into a kind of nationwide political survey, since voting is mandatory in Argentina and voters could choose any candidate in the primary irrespective of party. In a society as deeply polarized as Argentina’s, where both the ruling party and a fractured opposition have long claimed to represent what most citizens want, the election also gave voters a chance to show exactly where their sympathies lie.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

CHARIKAR, Afghanistan — A team of six suicide bombers — some wearing explosive vests — stormed a provincial governor’s compound in eastern Afghanistan on Sunday, killing 22 people in the latest high-profile attack to target prominent Afghan government officials, authorities said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in the Parwan provincial capital of Charikar, some 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Kabul. The province is home to Bagram Air Field, a sprawling base for U.S. and NATO troops. The coordinated assault is the most recent in a string of spectacular Taliban attacks within an hour’s drive of Kabul — a worrying sign of the insurgency’s strength near the heart of the country and its determination to target Afghanistan’s nascent leadership. Early this month, the Taliban shot down a helicopter in a province on the western border of the capital, killing 38 American and Afghan troops. In late June, gun-
men killed at least 21 people in an attack on the Inter-Continental hotel in Kabul itself. The violence is a sign of NATO’s broader struggles in the east, where persistent insurgent attacks forced the alliance to pull forces back from outlying patrol bases and outposts. The coalition, which plans to send 10,000 troops home by the end of the year, is considering whether to move forces from Taliban heartlands in the south to reinforce troops fighting insurgents in the east. LONDON — A man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of stabbing six people to death, including three children, on the British island of Jersey in what was the deadliest crime in the community’s living memory, police said. Neighbors said the victims were members of the same family. The dead, all Jersey residents, were a man, two women and three children, police said. Some were stabbed inside their home, others outside the property, which is located on a relatively secluded side street. The 30year-old suspect, who was not identified, also sustained unspecified injuries that were not life-threatening. Police said they were questioning him at his hospital bed. Neighbors said they thought at least some of the victims were Polish. One witness, Andre Thorpe, said he saw police running around the property trying to gain access, then paramedics carrying a bloodied child from the scene. Police Det. Superintendent Stewart Gull, who is leading the investigation, said his officers had yet to establish the victims’ ages and the circumstances of the attack. The man, whose name was not released, died at a hospital in the town of Xativa late Saturday, a regional government official said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with government rules and said an investigation into the goring had been opened. The 1,100-pound (500-kilogram) bull — named “Raton,” which means mouse — has killed two other members of the public during festivals over 10 years. Because of Raton’s fearsome reputation, his owners reportedly earn euro10,000 ($14,250) each time he appears at a festival. “He’s the one that gets the highest prices,” owner Gregorio de Jesus said of Raton last year. “But still he works out the cheapest because wherever he goes organizers double the ticket price — from euro6 ($8.50) to euro12 ($17).” Television images showed the man being tossed in the air and then hit along the ground in Xativa’s bullring. In Spain, many summer festivals highlight bull runs in streets or bullrings, where revelers can come close to the fearsome beasts. Indonesia jails victim of attack on Ahmadi sect Associated Press Writer
JAKARTA — An Indonesian man wounded when Muslim hard-liners attacked members of his minority Islamic sect was sentenced Monday to six months in jail, more than some of the actual attackers who were caught on video. Human rights groups blasted the ruling as encouraging growing religious intolerance in Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority country. The Serang District Court said Deden Sudjana — whose hand was nearly severed by a machete — resisted police orders to leave the scene and then attacked one of the leaders of the mob that killed three members of the Ahmadiyah sect. The Feb. 6 attack, which was captured on video and widely circulated on the Internet, showed a frenzied crowd of around 1,500 descending on members of Ahmadiyah in the village of Cikeusik with machetes, wooden clubs and rocks to try to prevent them from worshipping. One of the attackers was shown smashing in an Ahmadi member’s skull. Police looked on as the crowd pummeled the lifeless bodies of the other victims, while others chanted “Allahu Akbar!” or “God is Great!” So far, 12 members of the mob have been convicted. Their relatively lenient sentences of just three to six months set a chilling message about growing religious intol-
erance in Indonesia, said Andreas Harsono from Human Rights Watch. He said the decision to punish one of the victims will only encourage more violence by hard-liners. Indonesia, a predominantly Muslim and secular nation of 240 million, has a long history of religious tolerance. But a small, extremist fringe has grown more vocal in recent years and is seeking — with some success — to impose its will on police, the judicial system and the government. They’ve been emboldened by the inaction of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who relies on the support of Islamic parties in Parliament, and does not want to offend conservative Muslims by taking sides. Ahmadiyah, which has followers around the world, is considered heretical by many Muslims and banned in many Islamic countries because of its belief that Muhammad was not the final prophet. In recent years, hard-liners in Indonesia have attacked the sect’s mosques and intimidated some of its 200,000 followers.

ASEAN economy grows by 7.5 percent Antara
JAKARTA - ASEAN economy has proven itself to be resilient, but there are lingering challenges and risks, including the sovereign debt crisis and fiscal problems in some developed markets, rising food and commodity prices, and continued financial market stresses. The ASEAN Economic Ministers made the observation and reminder at the 43rd ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) Meeting here on August 10 and 11, 2011. According to the ASEAN secretariat‘s press release received here on Monday, that ASEAN‘s recovery as a whole has matured as both exports and domestic demand fueled growth to expand by 7.5 per cent last year. Intra-regional trade and investment flows also showed an upward momentum and are likely to support domestic growth this year, which is projected between 5.7 per cent and 6.4 per cent. ASEAN‘s merchandise trade grew at 32.9 per cent last year, as trade value jumped from US$ 1.54 trillion in 2009 to US$ 2.04 trillion last year, after the 19 per cent decline in 2009,” according to ASEAN‘s high ranking officials as quoted by the secretariat. As an attractive foreign direct investment (FDI) destination, ASEAN has maintained its allure. FDI into ASEAN reached US$ 75.8 billion last year, doubling the 2009 level, and surpassing the pre-global crisis peak in 2007 of US$75.7 billion. Over the last ten years, FDI flows in ASEAN grew at an annual average rate of 19 per cent.
The week-long Economic Meetings in Manado this week also included the 25th ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) Council and the 14th ASEAN Investment Area (AIA) Council Meetings, both held annually. Despite the encouraging figures, the Ministers reminded each other that ASEAN should remain vigilant in the face of global economic climate and stressed that ASEAN should continue to harness its competitiveness through deeper integration and implement its economic integration initiatives in a timely manner. ASEAN has benefited from a strong economic growth and increased commitments from its Member States. By end-April this year, ASEAN has completed almost 68 per cent of measures due under Phase I (200809) and Phase II (2010-2011) of implementing the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Blueprint, as greater efforts were exerted to reach the goals of an AEC by 2015. In line with Indonesia‘s ASEAN Chairmanship theme “ASEAN Community in a Global Community of Nations”, the Ministers had earlier outlined their economic vision for 2011. First, to achieve significant progress in realizing the ASEAN Community by 2015 which includes more emphasis on the AEC Blueprint‘s third pillar “towards a region of equitable economic development” for a more inclusive Community. Second, to increase the utilization of the ASEAN+1 Free Trade Area agreements while responding to the evolving regional architecture, and identifying and implementing ASEAN initiatives that may contribute to the global community, and third is to start thinking of an ASEAN vision beyond 2015.

BEKASI - General Motors said Friday it will invest $150 million to reactivate its Bekasi manufacturing plant in West Java, Indonesia in a move that will create more than 800 new jobs. The 27-acre (11-hectare) plant will begin production of a new line of vehicles for Southeast Asia in 2013 and has an initial capacity of up to 40,000 units per year. “This is one of the most significant undertakings we have made in the region,” Martin Apfel, president of GM Southeast Asia, said in a statement.
“The decision to reopen our Bekasi plant is an extension of GM’s commitment to maintain a strong manufacturing base in Indonesia and Southeast Asia for the production of world-class products that consumers will aspire to buy.” GM said the Bekasi plant, along with plants in Thailand and Vietnam, is part of a regional growth strategy that includes leveraging the local supply base and expanding its dealer network. GM’s sales in Indonesia rose 72 percent to 4,500 units last year and were up another 18 percent on an annual basis to 2,500 units in the first half of 2011.

Only 1,698 went to Bali via seaport by cruise liner,” the head of the Bali Provincial Statistics Office, I Gede Suarsa said here on Sunday. Last year, a total of 59,815 US tourists visited Bali compared to 35,625 a year earlier, he said. The US was among the top ten sources of foreign tourists visiting Bali although it occupied the tenth place after Australia, China, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Britain and France, he said. The US tourists accounted for
3.17 percent of the overall tourist arrivals in Bali in the first half of 2011 which reached 1.30 million. The figure rose 10.46 percent compared to the same period last year. Bali has set the target of tourist arrivals for 2011 at 2.6 million to 2.8 million. Last year, more than 2.57 million tourists visited Bali. Gede Suarsa said the number of tourists from eight of top ten sources of the province’s foreign tourist arrivals rose significantly in the first semester of 2011. Common people may use a medium, while those having higher spiritual knowledge do not need any medium. Therefore, none is wrong and it is a freedom. Inspired by puranic or mythological stories, many Hindu artisans in Bali manage to make various kinds of sculpture. When visitors happened to have island excursion, you may encounter many statues such as outside the temple, at the end of each bridge, intersection, hotel’s gardens or even on the pavement on the protocol roads in Denpasar. Sacred statues are placed in the sanctum representing gods and goddess as well as heavenly creatures, decorative statue installed in commercial premises and the last one is statue to commemorate the great heroes.
Statues depicting the great heroes can be encountered in the regencies pursuant to their respective origin. One of the great heroes of Bali is I Gusti Ngurah Rai as the name of local international airport. Right in the east of the airport stands still the Statue of Ngurah Rai. He was the commander of Ciung Wanara troops of Bali struggling bitterly against the Dutch colonial for the sake of freedom. With him, there were some other companions in arms. For instance, I Gusti Ngurah Bagus Sugianyar, his statue is strategically installed in the intersection of Jalan Gatot Subroto and Jalan Cokroaminoto, Ubung. As if he welcomes everyone entering the city from outside Denpasar and outside Bali from the west. Then, Cokorda Agung Tresna—Head of Badung Struggle Headquarters. His statue is installed on the intersection of Jalan Gatot Subroto and Jalan Nangka, right in the east of Sugianyar ’s statue. Meanwhile, Ida Bagus Putu Japa was a member of Pembela Tanah Air (embryo of the Indonesian Military) immortalized with a statue put in the Renon roundabouts. In the meantime, Puputan Badung Square located right in the heart of Denpasar City also retained statutes of other great heroes. The statues are placed in the northern side of the square. They depict the bitter struggle of the Badung Kingdom against the colonial until their last bloodshed. This heroic incident occurred on September 20, 1906 and now it is celebrated as the Puputan Badung Day. Those statues are intended to show an appreciation over the merits of great heroes of Bali that had dedicated their entire life sincerely for the nation. Similarly, they denote an educational medium to introduce the heroes to younger generation so they get a simple illustration about the heroes living before their time. Last but not least, they also give good visual impression to the arrangement of urban landscaping and attraction to tourists reflecting one of the artistic treasures owned by Bali. (BTN/punia)

Sunday (14/8) around 1 pm local time. The neighbor found Sung all bruised and wounded suspected after assaulted by a number of people. “I don’t know what really happened but I found him bleeding and crying for help,” Komang, the neighbour, explained.

SPICE PASTE: 5 red chilies, seeded and chopped 3 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 7 shallots, peeled and chopped 5 cm fresh turmeric, peeled and chopped 5 cm ginger, peeled and chopped 4 candlenuts 1 ½ tsp coriander ½ tsp dried shrimp paste toasted 1 sml tomato, peeled and seeded 2 tbsp oil 1 ½ tbsp tamarind pulp 1 salam leaf 1 lemon grass, bruised PREPARATION: Prepare spice paste by grinding or blending all ingredients except oil, tamarind, salam leaf and lemongrass. Heat oil, add spice paste and all other ingredients. Cook over moderate heat for about 5 minutes, then cool. Wash lobsters and leave whole. Bring water to the boil, add lobsters and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove lobsters, plunge in iced water for 1 minutes, then drain and remove meat. Return shells to the pot of water, keeping lobster meat aside. Add spice paste, lemongrass, lime leaves and vinegar to the water with the shells and simmer until 4 cups of stock remain. BUSINESS Japan economy contracts for third straight quarter Associated Press Writer
TOKYO — Japan’s economy contracted for a third straight quarter as consumer spending and factory production continued to suffer in the aftermath of the March earthquake and tsunami. Real gross domestic product — a measure of the value of all goods and services produced domestically — contracted at an annualized rate of 1.3 percent in the April-June quarter, the Cabinet Office said Monday. The figures did provide a glimmer of optimism as a much bigger contraction was expected. A Kyodo News agency survey of analysts had forecast the economy to shrink 2.6 percent. The March 11 earthquake and tsunami killed thousands of people and wiped out large parts of Japan’s northern coast. The disasters damaged many factories in the region, causing severe shortages of parts and components for manufacturers across the country, including automakers. The tsunami also crippled a nuclear power plant and caused a widespread power crunches, especially in the Tokyo region, adding to the headaches faced by businesses and households. The Cabinet office said GDP fell 0.3 percent quarter on quarter. Consumer spending, which accounts for some 60 percent of the economy, dipped 0.1 percent. Capital investment by companies was up just 0.2 percent from the previous quarter. The figures showed that the nation’s economy slumped in wide range of areas and still needs close attention, Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda said. “We must steer the economy very carefully because we still have downside risks including the problem of the rising yen,” Noda told a news conference. Japan’s economy was struggling even before the disaster. The country lost its place as the world’s No. 2 economy to China last year. It has faced a slew of problems including years of deflation, a rapidly aging and shrinking population and ballooning public debt. Japanese companies have in-

Bank funding stress threatens Europe credit crunch Reuters
LONDON - The risk of a credit crunch in southern Europe is rising as banks face stress in their medium- to long-term funding, forcing some to shrink their lending, analysts said on Monday. European banks were rocked last week by concern about a squeeze for short-term funding, with tougher and more costly financing and a retreat by U.S. money market funds prompting lenders to turn to the European Central Bank (ECB) for more cash. France’s banks were hit particularly hard. “Bank funding remains a key source of risk for bank earnings, ability to lend and a drag on economic recovery ... the risks of a credit crunch in southern Europe are rising,” said Huw van Steenis, analyst at Morgan Stanley. Morgan Stanley estimated Europe’s leading banks have issued about 90 percent of their term funding needs for this year on average, and have significant liquidity pools and European Central Bank funds to help. But it said many European banks have struggled to raise long-term funding in the last three months, and even when markets re-open the costs are likely to be high. A funding “circuit breaker” is needed to reduce the stress and the creation of a temporary bank liquidity guarantee program underwritten by the European Financial Stability Fund (EFSF) could strengthen confidence and encourage liquidity, van Steenis said in a note. The speedy deterioration in funding markets — which were a lead indicator of pressure points during the 2007/08 financial crisis — has raised fears about the knock-on effect on fragile economies. “While unlimited provision of ECB liquidity to euro zone banks means that a funding crisis is unlikely, constraints on private sector access to financing will undermine banks’ provision of credit to households and businesses and could derail an already weak recovery in Italy and France,” analysts at CreditSights also warned. Europe’s bank stocks were near flat in early Monday trading, after a rollercoaster ride last week, when a slump by Societe Generale led the index to a two-year low before stabilizing at the end of the week.

SINGAPORE — Oil prices hovered above $85 a barrel Monday in Asia as stock markets regained their footing after wild swings last week amid concerns about a slowing U.S. economy and worsening European debt crisis. Benchmark oil for September delivery was up 7 cents to $85.45 a barrel at late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude fell 34 cents to settle at $85.38 on Thursday. In London, Brent crude for October delivery was up 12 cents to $107.88 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange. Crude has risen from below $76 last week after falling from $100 last month as investors try to anticipate how much economic growth may slow in the U.S. and Europe in the second half. Oil was buoyed Monday by a jump in Asian stock markets. Traders often look to equities as a ba-
rometer of overall investor sentiment. “The market has begun to price in a less apocalyptic macroeconomic scenario,” Barclays Capital said in a report. It expects Brent oil to rise to $130 a barrel over the next 12 months even with potentially slower economic recoveries in the developed countries. Bat on Wisconsin flight prompts rabies probe Associated Press Writer
ATLANTA — A bat on a flight from Wisconsin to Atlanta last week has sparked a national search for passengers to protect them against possible rabies. No one knows if the bat had rabies because it escaped. But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday it wants to talk to people to make sure they didn’t have close contact with it, putting them at risk. CDC officials are trying to reach all 50 passengers who were on the Aug. 5 Delta flight 5121, which departed Madison, Wis., at 6:45 a.m. for Atlanta. The jet was in the air when the winged intruder emerged and repeatedly flew back and forth the length of cabin — as shown in a video posted on YouTube. The flight immediately returned to Madison. Some who have watched the video have speculated the creature may have been a bird. But it was labeled a bat by the passenger who shot the video, the CDC rabies
expert who studied the video and by a spokesman for Atlantic Southeast Airlines — the Atlanta company that operates the Delta connecting flight. Employees at the Madison airport who helped get it out of the terminal also said it was a bat, based on how it flew and behaved, said Brent McHenry, spokesman for the Dane County Regional Airport. He said there are bats around other buildings at the airport. “We see them all the time.” Passengers trapped the animal in a jet bathroom. At first, it couldn’t be found, McHenry said. But it later escaped, flying out the passenger bridge and into the terminal before it was ushered outside. As a precautionary step, health officials want to talk to each of the passengers and ask about possible exposure. Finding them has been complicated. The airline only could provide the names of the 15 who reboarded the plane after its return and completed the flight to the Atlanta. The other 35 were shifted to other flights.

However, those risks went down if the red meat was substituted with nuts, white meat, lowfat dairy or whole grain proteins. “Clearly, the results from this study have huge public health implications given the rising type 2 dia-
betes epidemic and increasing consumption of red meats worldwide,” said senior author Frank Hu. “The good news is that such troubling risk factors can be offset by swapping red meat for a healthier protein.” The data for the study came from questionnaire responses from more than 204,000 people in US nurses and health professionals’ studies. Those are huge.” Djokovic, who played night matches this week, looked uncomfortable from the outset and needed to save six break points to get through the opening set. He saved his eighth of the match before Fish finally broke him with a perfect forehand down the line to take a 32 lead in the second set. Djokovic looked lost as he was broken again to close out the set. But Djokovic was near-perfect on his service in the final set, although he needed four break points, one of which he challenged a call and lost, before finally putting away Fish. “It was a close match, for sure,”
Djokovic said. “A couple of points, one good return game in the third set, decided the winner. But it’s a final. I knew that he is not going to give me the match and the win. I knew that I have to fight for it. Up to the last moment, you didn’t really know who is going to win. But I believed I could do it. I had composure when I needed to. I think that was decisive.” Djokovic was in his first event since winning Wimbledon, while Fish has been the hottest player of the hard court season leading to the U.S. Open later this month. He has reached finals in three straight tournaments in the last month, winning in Atlanta. In the doubles final, Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia and Michael Llodra of France beat American brothers Bob and Mike Bryan 6-4, 6-7, 10-5.

SNOWBIRD, Utah — The last time Levi Leipheimer trained in Utah, he was battling snowy conditions up Little Cottonwood Canyon. On Sunday in the final stage of the Tour of Utah, the heat was on, what with scorching temperatures and attacks all day from a strong Colombian team. In the end, Leipheimer had just enough in him to successfully defend his title Sunday, locking onto Colombian Sergio Henao’s back wheel on the final 6-mile, 3,000-vertical foot climb. Henao won the final stage from Park City to Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort. But Leipheimer claimed the final yellow jersey, ahead of Henao and RadioShack teammate Janez Brajkovic, who took third overall and in the stage. “It was vicious out there,” said Leipheimer, from Montana but a local favorite because he attended high school and college in Utah. “One moment Janez and I (were battling) five or six of them. It was a little daunting out there.” It helped that Leipheimer, who had a disappointing Tour de France after winning the Tour of Switzerland in June, had a 23-second advantage over Henao coming into the final day. “I was in good shape,”
Henao said through an interpreter. “But I found out Levi was just as strong. He’s a worthy winner.” Gobernacion Indeportes Antioquia was a late invite to the upgraded Tour of Utah this year and
showed its merit. Henao won the prologue and final stage and teammate Janier Acevedo won Saturday’s Stage 4 race through the hills around Salt Lake City to give Gobernacion the team victory.
Father of Chelsea player Mikel abducted in Nigeria Associated Press Writer
LAGOS, Nigeria — The father of Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has been abducted in Nigeria’s restive central region, police said Monday. Plateau state police commissioner Dipo Ayeni told The Associated Press that Michael Obi disappeared from his home on Friday. Ayeni said he had no other details about the kidnapping. “We are still searching to find his location,” Ayeni said. A spokesman for Nigeria’s federal police command in Abuja, the country’s capital, declined to comment. London-based Sport Entertainment &
Media Group, John Obi Mikel’s management company, said no ransom demand had been made. It said Chelsea was looking at “security issues” after the abduction. “Mikel was informed by his manager prior to the Stoke v Chelsea match & decided to play so as not to let down his team & family,” the media group said on Twitter. John Obi Mikel has played with Chelsea since 2006. He previously played for Nigerian Premier League club Plateau United and on Nigeria’s Under-20 squad. “We will give Mikel and his family our full support at this most difficult time,” Chelsea said on its website.
