According to the economist Dr. Putu Saroyini Piartrini, Sunday (Jul 13), the challenges of food and beverage industry in exploiting market opportunities were realizing quality products consistently and fulfilling its social responsibility for consumer society. Most of the micro-, smalland some medium-scale food and beverage manufacturers had not yet understood about the elaboration on safe production process of food and beverages since the

procurement of raw materials to packaging of finished products as well as distribution process to consumers. “For instance, a lot of manufacturers still use hazardous substances in the preservation of ingredients, synthetic dyes and packaging products that are not safe for the health of consumers,” he added. To deal with the increasing consumer awareness of safe and healthy food as well as the threat

of imported food products having implemented the system of health and food safety, according to Saroyini, it was then required the education and mentoring for the SMEs producing the food and beverage. They had to understand about the production of safe food and beverage. Especially for the small- and medium-scale food and beverage industry had also been provided with food security management system known as the Hazard Analysis Critical Control

Point (HACCP) which was then integrated with the quality management system of ISO 9001 with the series of ISO 2000. “Small-scale food and beverage producers still have very limited understanding on the principles of food health and safety. Evidently, many food labels are still not including information on the content and expiry date of foods and beverages let alone the number of registration test of food hygiene and safety issued by the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM),” he said. He added that regulators and the public were expected to improve communication or to provide counseling to small- and mediumscale manufacturers related to the importance of food hygiene and

safety for business continuity. In addition, the safety of consumer posed a form of producer’s responsibility, though having not implemented comprehensive food hygiene and safety system. A food observer of Bali, Ketut Sugiana, expressed similar opinion. He admitted that the Indonesian processed food products were still far behind so that they were not ready to compete. If this condition was not addressed, then the domestic food producers would be eroded by foreign businessmen when entering the free market. “More unfortunately, our processed food products are alleged to be not hygienic. DENPASAR - Coordinator of the Balinese People Rejecting Reclamation Forum (ForBali), Wayan ‘Gendo’ Suardana challenged the Bali government, chiefly governor of Bali, to show off the consideration related to the permit of Benoa Bay reclamation plan to the public. Previously, it was reported that governor, regent of Badung and Denpasar mayor had received a letter from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries requesting consideration. The consideration was related to the application of location permit for the Benoa Bay reclamation by PT Tirta Wahana Bali International (TWBI). “We challenge the government to show off the consideration having been made to the public. In the case of Benoa Bay, if the governor, regent and mayor do not provide any recommendation, the minister will not certainly give permission,” he said. On the contrary, Gendo said, when the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries had issued a location permit for the PT TWBI, it meant the government chiefly the governor had recommended if Benoa Bay could be reclaimed. “If they give consideration not to recommend the implementation of reclamation, the Minister could not issue any permit as in the case of Dasong and geothermal. But, if later on the minister issues any permits, it means the governor recommends that Benoa Bay can be reclaimed,” he explained. Meanwhile, Regional Secretary of Bali, Cokorda Pemayun, could not be asked for his confirmation related to the consideration of location permit having been made

In the meeting was revealed if the governor received a letter from the Director General of Maritime Affairs, Coastal and Small Islands (KP3K), Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries on June 27, 2014. Contents of the letter were such as requesting consideration of the governor no later than 10 days after receiving the letter. To follow up the letter, the Bali government then held a meeting to get input for consideration by inviting the regional working units of the Badung and Denpasar. At that time, it was firmly stated if the permit

In fact, it could only bring in 1,500 prospective job seekers. Similarly, not all of those job seekers could

pass the selection test held by the companies,” he explained. In the future, his party wanted to re-open the job fair activities to bridge companies and job seekers. Unfortunately, in Bali, the central government only gave the opportunity to hold the Job Fair to Denpasar Municipality. “We will continuously overcome the unemployment in accordance with the expectations and desires of local leader namely in achieving the vision of Tabanan known as prosperous, secure and excellent,” he said. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

PHILADELPHIA — When robots first started playing soccer, it was a challenge for them just to see the ball. And to stay upright. But the machines participating in this month’s international RoboCup tournament are making passes and scoring points. Their ultimate goal? To beat the human World Cup champs within the next 35 years. “It’s hard to predict what will happen in 2050, but we are on the right path,” said event co-founder Manuela Veloso, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University in the U.S. A week after the World Cup title game, teams from 45 countries will face off at RoboCup in the Brazilian coastal town of Joao Pessoa. The “players,” which range from life-size humanoids to wheeled objects the size of soccer balls, compete in size-based divisions on miniature indoor fields. The tournament runs from July 19-25. While certainly fun to watch, organizers say the annual competition isn’t just about creating kicking machines. It’s about teaching the fully autonomous robots to make quick, smart decisions while working together in a changing environment. Those algorithms can translate off the field into technology like self-driving cars or delivery drones, said University of Pennsylvania

engineering professor Dan Lee. RoboCup includes separate contests for service robots and search-andrescue droids. Lee, who directs Penn’s robotics lab, has been the head “coach” of the school’s RoboCup soccer teams since 2002. Back then, the games resembled those played by 5-yearold children, Lee said. “They would all cluster together,” he said of the robots. “Whoever got the ball would have a hard time figuring out which way to kick the ball.” Now, it’s like watching 10year-olds execute basic athletic skills and strategies, said Lee. The battery-powered creatures play much shorter matches — about 20 minutes, compared with 90 minutes in the World Cup — but generally follow the same rules. Theater owners say conversions escalated quickly in 2013 and will help keep the drive-ins in business for now, promising news for an industry that peaked in the 1950s and ‘60s, then with more than 4,000 drive-in theaters nationwide. Some drive-ins are raising money using crowd-funding platforms such as Kickstarter while others are taking advantage of financing programs or renting out their theaters as flea markets during off-hours. Ry Russell, general manager of Saco Drive-In, launched a socialmedia campaign to win an $80,000 digital projection system in a contest sponsored by Honda. His drive-in theater in Saco, Maine, is celebrating its 75th anniversary by welcoming hundreds of cars to its giant roadside screen to watch the latest films on a new digital projection system. “We’re just seeing Darwinism kind

The median predictions for economic growth presented by board members was virtually unchanged and core inflation forecasts were broadly in line with the BoJ’s 2.0-percent inflation target both in fiscal 2015 and 2016, he noted. The bank slightly lowered its growth forecast for the current fiscal year to March to 1.0 percent expansion, from a previous 1.1 percent forecast. But Thieliant said “these predictions may assume an extension” of the current stimulus package. “It should not be surprising that policymakers express confidence in their own strategy. What’s more, recent comments by governor Kuroda revealed that the central bank is only ‘half way there’” in beating years of deflation. “The upshot is that further policy easing is still likely to be required, and we expect an extension... into 2015 to be announced at the late-October meeting.” Credit Suisse said in a research note: “We maintain our view that the bank will be forced to downgrade its economic and inflation forecast by October and we continue to expect the policy board to decide on additional easing during the October-December quarter.” The BoJ’s April-June Tankan survey showed Japanese business confidence sagged for the first time in six quarters owing to the April 1 sales tax hike, which hitting consumer demand. For more than four decades, farming in the North was characterized by heavy use of mechanization swiftly followed by chronic fuel and equipment shortages and stopgap policies. JAKARTA - The Jakarta Police has arrested two teachers identified by the initials NB and FT of the Jakarta International School (JIS) in connection with a sexual assault case involving a kindergarten pupil. “We have decided to detain the two suspects,” spokesman of the Jakarta Police Senior Commissioner Rikwanto stated on Tuesday. The police had grilled the two suspects and obtained adequate evidence to detain them, he reported. NB, a Canadian national, and FT, an Indonesian citizen, were named suspects on July 10, 2014. “There was a statement of a witness saying that a pupil had seen the victim being assaulted. We also have the post mortem result and more than two other evidences,” Rikwanto added. The police continued the investigation and there might be another suspect, he stated. In June, JIS Principal Timothy Carr and the school’s kindergarten teacher, Murphy, underwent police questioning in connection

This is a Bali Aga village, inhabited by descendants of the original Balinese, the people who predate the arrival of the Hindu Majapahit kingdom in the 16th century. It is famous for the Pura Pancering Jagat temple, but unfortunately visitors are not allowed inside. There are also a couple of traditional Bali Aga-style dwellings, and a large banyan tree, which is said to be more than 1,100 years old. At

Kuban sub-village close to Trunyan is a mysterious cemetery that is separated by the lake and accessible only by boat - there is no path along the steep walls of the crater rim. The village of Trunyan itself is situated at the edge of

Batur Lake. This location is inaccessible except by boat, and it takes around half an hour across the calm waters. Getting to Lake Batur takes around two hours drive to the northeast of Denpasar along the main road to Buleleng and through Bangli Regency.

Unlike the Balinese people, the people of Trunyan do not cremate or bury their dead, but just lay them out in bamboo cages to decompose, although strangely there is no stench. A macabre collection of skulls and bones lies on the stone platform and the surrounding areas. The dead bodies don’t produce bad smells because of the perfumed scents from a huge Taru Menyan tree growing nearby. Taru means ‘tree’ and Menyan means

‘nice smell’. The name of Terunyan was also derived from these two words. The women from Trunyan are prohibited from going to the cemetery when a dead body is carried there. This follows the deeply rooted belief that if a woman comes to the cemetery while a corpse is being carried there, there will be a disaster in the village, for example a landslide or a volcanic eruption. From the airport, the team set off for downtown Berlin in a bus painted with the years of Germany’s World Cup victories: The previous occasions were in 1954, 1974 and 1990. They were to make the last part of the trip to the Brandenburg Gate on an open truck. The “fan mile” started filling up hours before the arrival, with some waiting overnight to get a place at the front. “We’re all excited to see what it will be like,” Schweinsteiger told ARD television. “This time, thank God, we have the cup with us.” “It will only sink in for us in the next few days.” The team’s plane was about an hour behind schedule, its departure from Rio de Janeiro delayed after a luggage truck hit the aircraft and damage to the paintwork had to be inspected.

RIO DE JANEIRO - After putting on what was widely considered the best-ever World Cup in terms of entertainment FIFA is unlikely to make wholesale changes to the way the game is played but at the professional level some issues need addressing. Football’s authorities are proud of the fact that soccer’s 17 laws have remained fundamentally unchanged for over 100 years but, in reality, there have been regular adjustments and shifts of emphasis that have altered many aspects of the game. The definition of foul play is the same now as it was in 1950 yet tackles that were considered part and parcel of the game then would be immediately penalised now and perhaps draw a yellow or red card - innovations introduced in 1970. The offside law was once black and white, routinely explained to the uninitiated with salt and pepper pots. Now there is a whole “active” element to benefit the attacking side that means even experts and pundits can disagree over whether a player is on or off. The latest innovation to make

its World Cup debut in Brazil was goalline technology. In use without any problems in England’s Premier League last season, this advance has few opponents despite FIFA dragging its heels for so long before England midfielder Frank Lampard’s laughably disallowed goal against Germany four years ago finally forced their hand. Some observers are now talking about the next level of technological interference - the use of TV replays to aid the match officials, particularly in the case of offside. In general, replays do a great job of highlighting just how superbly efficient linesmen are when it comes to offside decisions, despite the routine howls of protest from players and fans when they go against them. Opponents claim the wait for a replay decision would “slow the game down” but for a tournament like the World Cup, with cameras and replays available in an instant, it would make little time difference if decisions were routinely reviewed, as in rugby. the idea of each team having two or three “challenges”, as in cricket, where the tension of awaiting the outcome on the big screens has become part and parcel of the fan experience. That is unlikely to come about soon, but one area the game’s overseers do need to address is how and why referees have decided to allow a virtual wrestling free-for-all at every corner and free kick. When Brazil’s Fred tumbled to the ground after feeling the slight presence of the hand of Croatia’s Dejan Lovren in the tournament’s opening game, supporters of the striker claimed he was fully entitled to fall over because “there was contact.” Yet at corners defenders have no compunction about wrapping both arms around an attacker, gripping his arm or virtually tearing the shirt off his back, safe in the knowledge that nothing will be done. Referees routinely delay the taking of a kick to hand out a stern lecture and then do absolutely nothing when the players ignore him seconds later. Not one penalty was awarded for such an offence which, if carried out on the halfway line, would earn a certain booking.

RIO DE JANEIRO — A top figure in an alleged illegal World Cup ticket-scalping scheme surrendered to Brazilian officials Monday, four days after police labeled him a fugitive, his lawyer said. Ray Whelan, a British executive with the MATCH group, which owned the rights to sell World Cup hospitality packages, is accused by police of providing World Cup tickets to an Algerian businessman, Lamine Fofana, whom authorities have called the top ticket scalper at this year’s Cup, which ended Sunday. Whelan had been arrested by Rio de Janeiro police last week, but freed hours later on bail. A police investigator then obtained a new warrant for his arrest late last week, but Whelan left the Copacabana Hotel where he was staying just minutes before authorities arrived to take him into custody again.

In an emailed statement, Whelan’s lawyer, Fernando Fernandes, said Whelan turned himself over to the judge in charge of overseeing the case against him and was placed in a holding cell. Police were expected to take custody of Whelan and transfer him to jail. The MATCH group has denied any wrongdoing by Whelan in a series of written statements and said he was willing to cooperate with any investigation. Under Brazilian law, selling tickets for sporting events above face value is illegal. But it’s a crime that normally results in a fine of about $225 and no prison sentence. Chief investigator Fabio Barucke said he has formally requested that a judge consider the actions of Whelan and at least 11 others already arrested in the alleged scalping scheme of having formed a criminal conspiracy, a charge that carry significant jail time.

It’s the team that has left many Brazilians wondering what went horribly wrong. The Cup was widely seen as theirs for the taking, especially on home turf. They finished in fourth place with their star badly injured and the brutal memory of a 7-1 rout by the Germans in front of a global audience. The most successful nation in World Cup history has been eliminated in three straight tournaments, enough to raise questions about whether it’s doing the right things to keep up with countries that have dominated the sport in recent years. It’s already clear Brazil won’t be the same after the home tournament. A change in coach is certain after the confederation announced Monday that Luiz Felipe Scolari will not be returning, and new players will be joining Neymar and Oscar for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Critics say bigger changers are needed, including in the local football confederation. The resounding 7-1 loss to Germany, which embarrassed the nation, could become a turning point for the national team. The semifinal defeat has everyone thinking about the need to rebuild. “We failed. We didn’t play up to expectations, we know it wasn’t a good tournament,” said striker Neymar, who missed the last two matches because of a back injury. “We didn’t play the kind of football that the Brazilian national team plays.
