‘Palo Alto’ promising debut for Gia Coppola

LOS ANGELES — It took a dark tale of teens and a pedophile in a Northern California suburb for Gia Coppola, the granddaughter of Francis and niece of Sofia, to also become a filmmaker. “Outsiders were always asking me if I was going into film,” says the soft-spoken 27-yearold writer-director, whose first movie, “Palo Alto,” debuted in New York and Los Angeles last weekend. “It deterred me. It felt intimidating to have that kind of attention.” But she agreed to adapt James Franco’s book “Palo Alto” after her mother, Jacqui de la Fontaine, introduced the two. Coppola had recently graduated from Bard College in New York, where she studied photography. Franco was impressed with her eye. “There was this intense focus in a lot of the detail that added up to this dreamy feeling,” says Franco of Coppola’s photos. “I thought that would be good for this material.” Franco became Coppola’s partner in the making of the film as well as her mentor, helping her push beyond the fear of helming a feature. “He let me know that he trusted me . I didn’t feel judged in any way,” says Coppola, who shot short online videos for fashion companies before “Palo Alto.” Nearly five years after her initial chat with Franco, the film is finally in theaters. “I thought we were making something so small,” says Coppola over coffee at a Holly-
wood cafe. “I thought we would just release it on the Internet.” But Tribeca Film had other ideas. In December of last year, the independent distribution company nabbed the North American rights to the film. Starring Franco, Emma Roberts, Val Kilmer and his 18-year-old son, Jack Kilmer (making his acting debut), “Palo Alto” will expand to 15-20 screens this weekend. Not a bad start for a low-budget film that initially struggled to gain financial backing. “No one wanted to invest in a first-time director with dark material and real teenagers,” says Coppola. But she didn’t run to her film world relatives for cash. “It was important for me to do it on my own,” says Coppola, who gained behind-the-scenes experience working on Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere” and Francis Ford Coppola’s “Twixt.” ‘’James and I wanted to keep it small and not have a second party involved.”
NEW YORK — The Oprah Winfrey Network says it plans to produce a documentary series following the life of Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team. The series will take an up-close look at the man recently drafted by the St. Louis Rams in a groundbreaking moment in professional sports. Cameras will follow the former University of Missouri football player as he works to earn a spot on the Rams while under a media microscope. Sam says he hopes his story can lead others to accept who they are and go for their dreams. OWN did not specify a premiere date for the series or how many episodes it will be. SEMARAPURA - Abrasion on the coastline of Lepang Beach, Banjarangkan subdistrict, Klungkung, is increasingly more serious. Sea waves severely grind down again to a hundred meters to the inland. As a result, local residents were alarmed. Even, dozens of hectares of farmland were submerged in seawater. Ironically, the paddy plants remaining green to near harvest in the agricultural areas were also submerged in seawater. Observation at location on Tuesday (May 13) indicated if the coastal conditions were getting crushed. A food stall had been hit by sea waves for many times. Puddles of seawater in the agricultural area of residents caused the paddy of farmers to be threatened with crop failure. Fortunately, most of the paddy plants in the agricultural area had been harvested. “The paddy plants having been submerged can no longer be harvested though they are still green. Rice ears must be empty,” said a local farmer, Wayan Trepti. The high tide on the beach had been going on since Monday night (May 12) accompanied by strong winds where its peak occurred on Tuesday morning (May 13). He said the soaked agricultural areas reached dozens of hectares spread-
ing from Lepang to Sidayu region. It often took place, almost every month. Seawater at the shoreline often went up and was ferocious. Every high tide, the seawater would inundate the farmland. Typically, the high tide occurred on certain days, such as new moon and full moon. When the farmland was flooded, farmers often faced harvest failure because the seawater disrupted the growth of paddy plants. “By and large, the condition is not as bad as this one. The whole paddy plants were drowned this morning,” said Trepti. Another resident, Ketut Sari, usually worked in one of the food stalls on the local beach said on Tuesday that high tide on Tuesday was pretty awful. During her lifetime at the shoreline, the high tide frequently occurred. However, the
one occurred on Tuesday was considered the most severe and made surrounding people anxious. “Similar high tides once occurred about two years ago,” said Sari. It did not only threaten the agricultural areas, but also the large projects like the condotel and villatel on the shore. A number of officers were panic. They were forced to dredge beach sand around the project area to hamper the high tide. The investors establishing the condotel and villatel at Lepang coastline were quite reckless because the waves on this beach were known ferocious. Even, the east side of the building was submerged during the high tides. Banjarangkan subdistrict has a coastline along 4,000 meters, Tegal Besar (2,000 meters), Lepang Beach (1,000 meters) and Sidayu Beach (1,000 meters). Of the 4,000 meters long, 3,000 meters are prone to abrasion and have not been handled. Residents have long complained about the abrasion on the shoreline. Even, a number of local residents claim to loss their land property rights they cultivated because of the abrasion. However, so far it gets very minimal handling. (kmb13)

Fairly wide potholes can be found everywhere. These conditions cause a lot of vehicles transporting goods to become reluctant to get into the terminal. However, they are forced to pay the entrance levy collected by the officers at the terminal entrance booth. Field observation on Tuesday (May 13) indicated if the stevedoring terminal newly built by the Buleleng Transportation Agency was in severely damaged condition. The whole asphalt layers in the terminal area came off because the load of vehicles entering the terminal was relatively heavy, so the asphalt and gravels easily came off. At a number of points, people could find deep puddles due to unstable soil. The most severe condition was seen near the entrance ticket booth where the asphalt layer was virtually unseen. When vehicles came into the terminal, the dust disturbed the comfort of people living around the terminal. Even, the entrance ticket officers were forced to use a medical mask covering the mouth and nose so as not to disturb their health. The damage of terminal did not just occur at this time. Previously, the gutter at the entrance of the terminal at the edge of Jalan Ahmad Yani, Singaraja, also collapsed. It happened because the loads of vehicles entering the terminal were quite heavy, so it was not strong enough to hold the load of vehicles. The damage was successfully handled by the Transportation Agency, but after that, the damage apparently happened again in the area of the stevedoring terminal. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

MANGUPURA - Most of the agricultural and SMEs products in Badung actually have pretty good quality. Unfortunately, the native products to Badung are not maximized to penetrate the markets, especially the tourism industry in order to meet the needs of hotels and restaurants in South Badung. So far, only a few products can succeed. According to Putu Parwata, a legislator of Badung House, the agricultural products of Badung could not meet the market demand of tourism industry in Badung. It happened because a number of products still had inferior quality. Not only that, there was no assurance of continuity. A similar problem was also experienced by other products such as handicrafts and the SME products in Badung. So far, Parwata assessed the direction of the SME development in Badung was unclear so that only a small portion could be touched. “There are tens of thousands of SMEs in Badung. They still need to be addressed seriously by the government,” he said. A member of Commission C of the Badung House, Wayan Puspa Negara, revealed that some products of Badung actually had a good quality and had been in demand to penetrate the international market such as the asparagus and coffee of Petang. Nevertheless, there were a number of horticultural products which could not be absorbed in the tourism industry such as peppers, carrots, potatoes and tomatoes due to poor quality control.
Likewise, the handicraft products still needed more attention. To that end, he hoped the government’s efforts to enhance the synergy between the government and private sector to absorb the original products of Badung. They included coffee and asparagus of Plaga as well as the sculpture of Jagapati, Angantaka and Sedang (JAS). “The asparagus product of Badung is the best in Indonesia, even in Asia,” he said. Karpiana explained that marketing of the product owned by Badung had entered the modern shops, cooperatives and stalls. The premium quality products were especially marketed to hotels in Badung. However, it was acknowledged that the problem of product marketing of Badung was not maximized. One of the main obstacles was the packaging. “The products have good quality, but sometimes they have weakness in packaging. This is the obstacle in marketing,” he explained. This obstacle caused the products of Badung remained unable to penetrate the market of the tourism industry in South Badung. On Sunday (May 11), the officers of the Livestock Agency also searched the entire hamlet territory of Pohsanten village and performed mass vaccination. The mass vaccination was conducted at all villages in Jembrana. Since last April, the agency assigned a team to perform mass dog vaccination. Hundreds of those dogs were vaccinated by injection and blowpipe. The agency provided about 17,000 vaccines for the entire dog population in Jembrana. Moreover, a rabies case was found at Pohsanten village last week. The Head of Agriculture, Plantation and Livestock Agency, I Ketut Wiratma, said on Tuesday (May 13) the result of examination to the dog at Pohsanten village was positive to rabies. SOMA, Turkey — Rescue teams recovered eight more victims of Turkey’s worst mining accident on Thursday, raising the death toll to 282 in a disaster that has thrown Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s presidential ambitions off stride. Hundreds of people were attending funerals for the victims in the western mining town of Soma; dozens and dozens of graves have been dug, ready to receive the bodies. Although 363 miners were rescued, some 150 more have not been accounted for. No miner has been brought out alive since early Wednesday. Mourners at the funerals said they spent their lives fearing something like this. “The wives of the miners kiss their husbands in the morning. When they come back, even if they are five minutes late, everyone starts calling. You never know what is going to happen,” said Gulizar Donmez, 45, the daughter and wife of a miner and neighbor of one of the victims. Erdogan, who is expected to soon announce his candidacy for presidential elections in August, was forced to take refuge at a supermarket during his visit to the area Wednesday after angry crowds called him a murderer and thief and clashed with police. Turkish newspapers Cumhuriyet, Milliyet and others on Thursday printed photographs they said were of an Erdogan aide kicking a protester who was on the ground and being held by special forces police during the scuffles. The papers identified the aide as Yusuf Yerkel. Erdogan had earlier downplayed
the disaster, calling mining accidents “ordinary things” that also occur in many other countries, after giving examples of 19th-century mine accidents in Britain. Erdogan has made no secret of his desire to become Turkey’s first popularly elected president. His party swept local elections in March despite a corruption scandal that forced him to dismiss four government ministers in December and later also implicated him and family members. Erdogan denies corruption, calling the allegations part of a plot to bring his government down. Protests broke out in Istanbul, Ankara and other cities over the deaths and poor safety conditions at mines around the country. Turk-Is, Turkey’s largest trade union confederation representing some 800,000 workers, joined a one-day strike by other unions to demand better conditions for workers. SEOUL, South Korea — Prosecutors indicted the captain of the sunken South Korean ferry and three crew members on homicide charges Thursday, alleging they were negligent and failed to protect more than 300 people missing or dead in the disaster. Less serious indictments were issued against the 11 other crew members responsible for navigating the vessel. Capt. Lee Joon-seok and the other homicide defendants — a first mate, a second mate and the chief engineer — could face the death penalty if convicted, according to the Supreme Court, though no one has been executed in South Korea since 1997. The 11 others were indicted for alleged negligence and abandoning passengers in need when the ship sank on April 16, according to prosecutors. The indictment was filed Thursday in Gwangju District Court and a trial date will be decided in a few days, according to a court official who requested anonymity due to department rules. The official said all 15 defendants are expected to be tried together. The 15 indicted crew members were among the first group of people rescued when the
Sewol began badly listing, and all were arrested last month. Lee initially told passengers to stay in their cabins and took about half an hour to issue an evacuation order but it’s not known if his message was ever conveyed to passengers. In a video taken by the coast guard, he was seen escaping the ferry in his underwear to a rescue boat while many passengers were still in the sinking ship. Lee told reporters after his arrest last month that he withheld the evacuation order because rescuers had yet to arrive and he feared for the passengers’ safety in the cold, swift water. The head of the ferry’s owner, Chonghaejin Marine Co. Ltd, and four other company employees have also been arrested. Authorities suspect improper stowage and overloading of cargo may have contributed to the disaster. About one month after the sinking, 284 bodies have been retrieved and 20 others are listed as missing. Only 172 people, including 22 of the ship’s 29 crew members, survived. Most of the victims were students from a single high school near Seoul who were traveling to the southern tourist island of Jeju.

Leeza Ormsby, 37, was detained in February after police raided her villa in the tourist area of Kuta. Officers found a half-smoked hash joint in her bag, as well as 27 grammes (almost one ounce) of hash and ecstasy pills weighing 132 grammes in a cupboard. However, prosecutor Ni Luh Putu Oka Ariani said Ormsby would only be charged with possession and misuse of the small amount of hash found in her bag. Prosecutors aim to formally charge her in court in June, she added.

If the girls worked at café, then the men worked as trader and laborer. Stiva admitted to have never reported his presence and the business to the local hamlet authority since receiving the mandate since six months ago. “More severely, the permit owned in Bandung is in accommodation business, but its operations in Nusa Penida is even in diving business,” said Kariasa. Kariasa asked the operator to report his presence to local village and subdistrict head office to submit the permission for diving company before operating. CHICAGO — Operations at Chicago’s two airports are returning to normal after an electrical problem at a regional radar facility forced a shutdown of all incoming and outgoing flights. Tuesday’s three-hour halt resulted in more than 1,120 cancellations at O’Hare International and Midway International airports. By Wednesday morning, about 100 flights to and from O’Hare were scrapped and a few dozen more were delayed. That’s according to the aviation tracking website FlightAware.com. There were only minor disruptions at Midway. The ground stop was triggered by a bathroom exhaust fan in a ceiling that overheated and melted insulation on some wires. Smoke was pushed through the radar facility’s ventilation system and into the control room. The Chicago Terminal Radar Approach Control, or TRACON, facility is in suburban Elgin.

HANOI, Vietnam — A 1,000-strong mob stormed a Taiwanese steel mill in Vietnam, killing a Chinese worker and injuring 141 others, a Taiwanese official and police said Thursday, in the first deadly incident in a wave of anti-China protests prompted by Beijing’s deployment of an oil rig in disputed seas. The unrest is a major challenge for Vietnam’s authoritarian and secretive leadership, and is hurting the country’s reputation as a safe investment destination. It risks inflaming an already tense and dangerous standoff between patrol ships from both countries in the South China Sea close to the rig, which Hanoi is demanding Beijing withdraw. Companies from Taiwan, many of which employ Chinese nationals, are bearing the brunt of the protests and violence, the most serious in years to hit the tightly controlled nation of 90 million people. Sevilla’s Europa title extends Spain’s winning run

TURIN, Italy — Spanish football wins. Again. Sevilla added another title to the top-ranked country’s recent roll of international honors Wednesday, beating Portugal’s champion Benfica in a penalty shootout after the Europa League final finished 0-0 after extra time. Since 2006, Sevilla has won this competition three times, Barcelona has won three Champions League titles and Spain has taken home three straight major tournament trophies. Though Sevilla did not play with the precision passing made famous by the national team or Barcelona, its technique in taking and saving penalties was outstanding. Just as Spain’s was when it ousted Portugal in a shootout in the Euro 2012 semifinals. Victory here ensured Spain will sweep the season-ending European club titles on May 24 when Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid play in the Champions League final. Of course, next season’s curtain-raising UEFA Super Cup in August will now also be all-Spanish clash featuring the two club competition winners. Before then, the biggest prize of all could return to Spain. Spain will kick off its World Cup title defense in Brazil next month and seek to be the first back-toback winner since Brazil in 1962. That would also set a record of four consecutive top-level tournament triumphs following the dominant Euro 2008 and 2012 teams. Such is Spain’s strength that it found space for only one Sevilla player — defender Alberto Moreno — in the 30-man provisional World Cup squad announced Tuesday. STANFORD, California — United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann says his team has some serious catching up to do a month before its World Cup opener. Klinsmann was eager to get started on a scorching Wednesday afternoon at Stanford Stadium as the Americans began a two-week training camp leading up to a May 27 friendly against Azerbaijan at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park. Sevilla’s Europa title extends Spain’s winning run

TURIN, Italy — Spanish football wins. Again. Sevilla added another title to the top-ranked country’s recent roll of international honors Wednesday, beating Portugal’s champion Benfica in a penalty shootout after the Europa League final finished 0-0 after extra time. Since 2006, Sevilla has won this competition three times, Barcelona has won three Champions League titles and Spain has taken home three straight major tournament trophies. Though Sevilla did not play with the precision passing made famous by the national team or Barcelona, its technique in taking and saving penalties was outstanding. Just as Spain’s was when it ousted Portugal in a shootout in the Euro 2012 semifinals. Victory here ensured Spain will sweep the season-ending European club titles on May 24 when Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid play in the Champions League final. Of course, next season’s curtain-raising UEFA Super Cup in August will now also be all-Spanish clash featuring the two club competition winners. Before then, the biggest prize of all could return to Spain. Spain will kick off its World Cup title defense in Brazil next month and seek to be the first back-toback winner since Brazil in 1962. That would also set a record of four consecutive top-level tournament triumphs following the dominant Euro 2008 and 2012 teams. Such is Spain’s strength that it found space for only one Sevilla player — defender Alberto Moreno — in the 30-man provisional World Cup squad announced Tuesday. Sevilla midfielder Stephane Mbia — who will go to the World Cup with Cameroon — said he was not surprised at Spain’s winning streak. “It’s just tactics. Think about everything. STANFORD, California — United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann says his team has some serious catching up to do a month before its World Cup opener. Klinsmann was eager to get started on a scorching Wednesday afternoon at Stanford Stadium as the Americans began a two-week training camp leading up to a May 27 friendly against Azerbaijan at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park. While all 30 Americans have yet to arrive in the Bay Area, Klinsmann will have the task of cutting the squad to 23 by June 2. “The reason we take 30 is we’re not sure yet,” Klinsmann said before his team took the field. “There will be intense training sessions ahead of them in order to show what they have, in every position not only as a center forward, the entire team.” Defender Geoff Cameron and goalkeepers Tim Howard and Brad Guzan are scheduled to arrive Sunday, as Klinsmann gave them a few extra days coming from their Premier League clubs in England. MIAMI — Miami and San Antonio both advanced to the NBA conference finals in contrasting fashion on Wednesday, with the Heat storming over the top of Brooklyn to pinch a narrow victory while the Spurs cruised past Portland. Miami trailed almost the entire game and was eight points down with less than five minutes left but found a way to pull out a 96-94 win that clinched a 4-1 series victory and a place in the Eastern Conference finals for the fourth-straight year. The Heat will face either Indiana or Washington.

A ‘megaphone’ exhaust tested by Formula One leaders Mercedes in Spain on Wednesday failed to make the quieter new cars sound any louder, race driver Nico Rosberg said on Wednesday. “It wasn’t a great solution,” the German said in a video posted on Instagram after he had lapped Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya with what looked like a shiny vuvuzela at the back of the car. “It just didn’t work. It didn’t make it much louder. So we’ll just have to look for another solution.” The season’s dominant team, runaway winners of all five races so far, had agreed to try out the trumpet-like device to try and pump up the volume after complaints that the new V6 turbo hybrid cars were too quiet compared to the old V8 screamers. The softer sound provided an immediate controversy when the season started in Australia in March with some race promoters, who met in Barcelona on Saturday, fearing ticket sales could fall off if fans were alienated by the lack of decibels. Others in favour of the quieter new era argue that increasing the
noise goes against the greener spirit of the regulation changes, which reduce wasted energy from the exhaust and brakes and harness it to improve fuel economy. “It’s an interesting moment in time for Formula One,” Mercedes motorsport head Toto Wolff said last weekend. “Traditionally you would have said... that Formula One needs to be loud to be spectacular. Maybe now that’s changing.” While the noise, or lack of it, was a talking point on Wednesday others got on with their regular business.Red Bull had quadruple champion Sebastian Vettel in their car while Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado topped the fairly meaningless timesheets with Lotus. CHICAGO — Operations at Chicago’s two airports are returning to normal after an electrical problem at a regional radar facility forced a shutdown of all incoming and outgoing flights. Tuesday’s three-hour halt resulted in more than 1,120 cancellations at O’Hare International and Midway International airports. By Wednesday morning, about 100 flights to and from O’Hare were scrapped and a few dozen more were delayed. That’s according to the aviation tracking website FlightAware.com. There were only minor disruptions at Midway. The ground stop was triggered by a bathroom exhaust fan in a ceiling that overheated and melted insulation on some wires. Smoke was pushed through the radar facility’s ventilation system and into the control room. The Chicago Terminal Radar Approach Control, or TRACON, facility is in suburban Elgin.

HANOI, Vietnam — A 1,000-strong mob stormed a Taiwanese steel mill in Vietnam, killing a Chinese worker and injuring 141 others, a Taiwanese official and police said Thursday, in the first deadly incident in a wave of anti-China protests prompted by Beijing’s deployment of an oil rig in disputed seas. The unrest is a major challenge for Vietnam’s authoritarian and secretive leadership, and is hurting the country’s reputation as a safe investment destination. It risks inflaming an already tense and dangerous standoff between patrol ships from both countries in the South China Sea close to the rig, which Hanoi is demanding Beijing withdraw. Companies from Taiwan, many of which employ Chinese nationals, are bearing the brunt of the protests and violence, the most serious in years to hit the tightly controlled nation of 90 million people. In his first remarks on the crisis, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said peaceful protests over the last few days were “legitimate,” but that anyone involved in violence should be punished severely. “This is serious,” he said in
a telegram to police across the country. Nervous Chinese expatriates were fleeing by land and air. Cambodian immigration police said 600 Chinese crossed into Cambodia over the land border in southern Vietnam on Wednesday, and that others were arriving Thursday. In Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said China was “greatly shocked and concerned.” “We urge the Vietnamese government to earnestly assume responsibility, get to the bottom of the incident, punish the perpetrators harshly, and pay compensation,” Hua told a regularly scheduled news conference. She said China holds Vietnam’s government directly responsible for
the violence and will file a formal diplomatic protest. The riot took place at a mill in Ha Tinh province in central Vietnam, about 350 kilometers (220 miles) south of Hanoi. It followed an anti-China protest by workers at the complex, operated by the conglomerate Formosa Plastics Group, one of the biggest foreign investors in Vietnam, according to Taiwan’s top representative in the country, Huang Chih-peng, and police. Foreign Affairs Department spokesman Charles Jose said the pictures show Chinese aggressiveness in asserting its claims over the entire South China Sea. The aerial photographs were accompanied by a caption stating that they were obtained from “Philippine intelligence sources.” The caption said the “extensive reclamation” by China on the Johnson South Reef, called Mabini by Manila and Chigua by Beijing, was “destabilizing.” The Chinese Embassy in Manila had no immediate comment, but a Foreign Ministry spokesman in Beijing has said that the area is part of China’s territory, and that any Chinese activities at the reef should be of no concern to Manila. Leeza Ormsby, 37, was detained in February after police raided her villa in the tourist area of Kuta. Officers found a half-smoked hash joint in her bag, as well as 27 grammes (almost one ounce) of hash and ecstasy pills weighing 132 grammes in a cupboard. However, prosecutor Ni Luh Putu Oka Ariani said Ormsby would only be charged with possession and misuse of the small amount of hash found in her bag. Kariasa asked the operator to report his presence to local village and subdistrict head office to submit the permission for diving company before operating. Moreover, the diving business recently got public highlight when seven Japanese travelers became the victims while diving at Nusa Penida. “We will report this finding to relevant agencies to be followed up in accordance with the applicable procedures and authorities,” he said. Meanwhile, all the migrants had been reprimanded to report their presence to local village officials. SOMA, Turkey — Rescue teams recovered eight more victims of Turkey’s worst mining accident on Thursday, raising the death toll to 282 in a disaster that has thrown Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s presidential ambitions off stride. Hundreds of people were attending funerals for the victims in the western mining town of Soma; dozens and dozens of graves have been dug, ready to receive the bodies. Although 363 miners were rescued, some 150 more have not been accounted for. No miner has been brought out alive since early Wednesday. Mourners at the funerals said they spent their lives fearing something like this. “The wives of the miners kiss their husbands in the morning. When they come back, even if they are five minutes late, everyone starts calling. You never know what is going to happen,” said Gulizar Donmez, 45, the daughter and wife of a miner and neighbor of one of the victims. Erdogan, who is expected to soon announce his candidacy for presidential elections in August, was forced to take refuge at a supermarket during his visit to the area Wednesday after angry crowds called him a murderer and thief and clashed with police. Turkish newspapers Cumhuriyet, Milliyet and others on Thursday printed photographs they said were of an Erdogan aide kicking a protester who was on the ground and being held by special forces police during the scuffles. The papers identified the aide as Yusuf Yerkel. Erdogan had earlier downplayed
the disaster, calling mining accidents “ordinary things” that also occur in many other countries, after giving examples of 19th-century mine accidents in Britain. Erdogan has made no secret of his desire to become Turkey’s first popularly elected president. SEOUL, South Korea — Prosecutors indicted the captain of the sunken South Korean ferry and three crew members on homicide charges Thursday, alleging they were negligent and failed to protect more than 300 people missing or dead in the disaster. Less serious indictments were issued against the 11 other crew members responsible for navigating the vessel. Capt. Lee Joon-seok and the other homicide defendants — a first mate, a second mate and the chief engineer — could face the death penalty if convicted, according to the Supreme Court, though no one has been executed in South Korea since 1997. The 11 others were indicted for alleged negligence and abandoning passengers in need when the ship sank on April 16, according to prosecutors. The indictment was filed Thursday in Gwangju District Court and a trial date will be decided in a few days, according to a court official who requested anonymity due to department rules. The official said all 15 defendants are expected to be tried together. The 15 indicted crew members were among the first group of people rescued when the
Sewol began badly listing, and all were arrested last month. Lee initially told passengers to stay in their cabins and took about half an hour to issue an evacuation order but it’s not known if his message was ever conveyed to passengers. In a video taken by the coast guard, he was seen escaping the ferry in his underwear to a rescue boat while many passengers were still in the sinking ship. Lee told reporters after his arrest last month that he withheld the evacuation order because rescuers had yet to arrive and he feared for the passengers’ safety in the cold, swift water. The head of the ferry’s owner, Chonghaejin Marine Co. Ltd, and four other company employees have also been arrested. Authorities suspect improper stowage and overloading of cargo may have contributed to the disaster. About one month after the sinking, 284 bodies have been retrieved and 20 others are listed as missing. Only 172 people, including 22 of the ship’s 29 crew members, survived. Most of the victims were students from a single high school near Seoul who were traveling to the southern tourist island of Jeju.

The system had been in effect since January 27, 2014. “When it was first applied, the officers got problems in terms of the applicant line. Yet after running up to these days, the services are provided at three tables and handled by totally six officers. So far, the passport application service has been running smoothly,” he said. MANGUPURA - Most of the agricultural and SMEs products in Badung actually have pretty good quality. Unfortunately, the native products to Badung are not maximized to penetrate the markets, especially the tourism industry in order to meet the needs of hotels and restaurants in South Badung. So far, only a few products can succeed. According to Putu Parwata, a legislator of Badung House, the agricultural products of Badung could not meet the market demand of tourism industry in Badung. It happened because a number of products still had inferior quality. Not only that, there was no assurance of continuity. A similar problem was also experienced by other products such as handicrafts and the SME products in Badung. So far, Parwata assessed the direction of the SME development in Badung was unclear so that only a small portion could be touched. “There are tens of thousands of SMEs in Badung. They still need to be addressed seriously by the government,” he said. A member of Commission C of the Badung House, Wayan Puspa Negara, revealed that some products of Badung actually had a good quality and had been in demand to penetrate the international market such as the asparagus and coffee of Petang. Nevertheless, there were a number of horticultural products which could not be absorbed in the tourism industry such as peppers, carrots, potatoes and tomatoes due to poor quality control.
Likewise, the handicraft products still needed more attention. To that end, he hoped the government’s efforts to enhance the synergy between the government and private sector to absorb the original products of Badung. In the future, he hoped through the synergy the government could facilitate private sectors to go directly to people looking for their business needs. Meanwhile, the Head of the Cooperatives, Industry, Trade and SME Agency, Ketut Karpiana, said the agricultural and handicraft products, especially the SME products in Badung had good quality. They included coffee and asparagus of Plaga as well as the sculpture of Jagapati, Angantaka and Sedang (JAS). “The asparagus product of Badung is the best in Indonesia, even in Asia,” he said. Karpiana explained that marketing of the product owned by Badung had entered the modern shops, cooperatives and stalls. The premium quality products were especially marketed to hotels in Badung. However, it was acknowledged that the problem of product marketing of Badung was not maximized. One of the main obstacles was the packaging. “The products have good quality, but sometimes they have weakness in packaging. This is the obstacle in marketing,” he explained. This obstacle caused the products of Badung remained unable to penetrate the market of the tourism industry in South Badung. Similarly, the local farmers and the SMEs still found other technical problems in Badung. To assist the marketing of the agricultural and the SME products,

When asked about when the plan could be realized, Karpiana revealed the detailed engineering design (DED) would be designed in the regional
budget amendment 2014. According to the plan, the physical construction would be done in 2015. “For the time being, we only have a display of statue. This makes other SMEs feel jealous and ask their marketing to be facilitated. So later on, this packaging house will become the solution. Fairly wide potholes can be found everywhere. These conditions cause a lot of vehicles transporting goods to become reluctant to get into the terminal. However, they are forced to pay the entrance levy collected by the officers at the terminal entrance booth. Field observation on Tuesday (May 13) indicated if the stevedoring terminal newly built by the Buleleng Transportation Agency was in severely damaged condition. The whole asphalt layers in the terminal area came off because the load of vehicles entering the terminal was relatively heavy, so the asphalt and gravels easily came off. At a number of points, people could find deep puddles due to unstable soil. The most severe condition was seen near the entrance ticket booth where the asphalt layer was virtually unseen. When vehicles came into the terminal, the dust disturbed the comfort of people living around the terminal. Even, the entrance ticket officers were forced to use a medical mask covering the mouth and nose so as not to disturb their health. The damage of terminal did not just occur at this time. Previously, the gutter at the entrance of the terminal at the edge of Jalan Ahmad Yani, Singaraja, also collapsed. It happened because the loads of vehicles entering the terminal were quite heavy, so it was not strong enough to hold the load of vehicles. The damage was successfully handled by the Transportation Agency, but after that, the damage apparently happened again in the area of the stevedoring terminal. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

‘Palo Alto’ promising debut for Gia Coppola

LOS ANGELES — It took a dark tale of teens and a pedophile in a Northern California suburb for Gia Coppola, the granddaughter of Francis and niece of Sofia, to also become a filmmaker. “Outsiders were always asking me if I was going into film,” says the soft-spoken 27-yearold writer-director, whose first movie, “Palo Alto,” debuted in New York and Los Angeles last weekend. “It deterred me. It felt intimidating to have that kind of attention.” But she agreed to adapt James Franco’s book “Palo Alto” after her mother, Jacqui de la Fontaine, introduced the two. Coppola had recently graduated from Bard College in New York, where she studied photography. Franco was impressed with her eye. “There was this intense focus in a lot of the detail that added up to this dreamy feeling,” says Franco of Coppola’s photos. “I thought that would be good for this material.” Franco became Coppola’s partner in the making of the film as well as her mentor, helping her push beyond the fear of helming a feature. “He let me know that he trusted me . I didn’t feel judged in any way,” says Coppola, who shot short online videos for fashion companies before “Palo Alto.” Nearly five years after her initial chat with Franco, the film is finally in theaters. “I thought we were making something so small,” says Coppola over coffee at a Holly-
wood cafe. “I thought we would just release it on the Internet.” But Tribeca Film had other ideas. In December of last year, the independent distribution company nabbed the North American rights to the film. Starring Franco, Emma Roberts, Val Kilmer and his 18-year-old son, Jack Kilmer (making his acting debut), “Palo Alto” will expand to 15-20 screens this weekend. Not a bad start for a low-budget film that initially struggled to gain financial backing. “No one wanted to invest in a first-time director with dark material and real teenagers,” says Coppola. But she didn’t run to her film world relatives for cash. “It was important for me to do it on my own,” says Coppola, who gained behind-the-scenes experience working on Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere” and Francis Ford Coppola’s “Twixt.” ‘’James and I wanted to keep it small and not have a second party involved.”

SEMARAPURA - Abrasion on the coastline of Lepang Beach, Banjarangkan subdistrict, Klungkung, is increasingly more serious. Sea waves severely grind down again to a hundred meters to the inland. As a result, local residents were alarmed. Even, dozens of hectares of farmland were submerged in seawater. Ironically, the paddy plants remaining green to near harvest in the agricultural areas were also submerged in seawater. Observation at location on Tuesday (May 13) indicated if the coastal conditions were getting crushed. A food stall had been hit by sea waves for many times. Puddles of seawater in the agricultural area of residents caused the paddy of farmers to be threatened with crop failure. Fortunately, most of the paddy plants in the agricultural area had been harvested. “The paddy plants having been submerged can no longer be harvested though they are still green. Rice ears must be empty,” said a local farmer, Wayan Trepti. The high tide on the beach had been going on since Monday night (May 12) accompanied by strong winds where its peak occurred on Tuesday morning (May 13). He said the soaked agricultural areas reached dozens of hectares spread-
ing from Lepang to Sidayu region. It often took place, almost every month. Seawater at the shoreline often went up and was ferocious. Every high tide, the seawater would inundate the farmland. Typically, the high tide occurred on certain days, such as new moon and full moon. When the farmland was flooded, farmers often faced harvest failure because the seawater disrupted the growth of paddy plants. “By and large, the condition is not as bad as this one.
