Priyanka Chopra recovering after mishap on ‘Quantico’ set
LOS ANGELES - Actress Priyanka Chopra is resting at home after a “minor incident” on the set of her ABC show “Quantico,” the network said Friday. Celebrity news website TMZ, citing unnamed sources, said Chopra had slipped and fallen during a stunt and suffered a concussion after hitting her head. In a statement, ABC did not confirm this but said a “minor incident” took place on the New York set of the FBI drama series on Thursday night.
“It would be premature to comment further until we have all the information. Priyanka was examined by a doctor, released and is home resting comfortably,” the network added. A representative for the actress said she will return to work after the weekend.
Walt Disney Co.’s ABC did not comment further on whether production of the show will be halted, but trade publication Variety said production will not be shut down while Chopra recovers. Chopra, 34, made her transition from Bollywood to Hollywood as the lead of “Quantico,” in which she plays an FBI recruit turned CIA agent. She will also be starring in the upcoming film reboot of “Baywatch.” (rtr)

More freezing rain, temperatures expected for central US

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A third wave of sleet and drizzle could hit parts of the central U.S. on the eve of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, weather officials said, and temperatures threaten to stay near or below freezing and add to the treacherous mix. Ice buildups of one-quarter to slightly less than a half inch were expected late Saturday and Sunday morning from southeastern Kansas to central Missouri. Becky Allmeroth, a state maintenance engineer for the Missouri Department of Transportation, said ice is “the most difficult storm to fight.” “We are keeping up with the changing conditions, but it is a continual battle,” she said of the department’s around-the-clock scrambling to treat the glazed roads. “The precipitation is coming in waves, and we have to apply more salt.” Icy roads Saturday created dangerous conditions and travel head-
aches for many people who avoided authorities’ pleas to stay indoors except for necessary outings. Interstate 40 in western Oklahoma was closed in two places because of wrecks, including the jackknifing of several semitrailers in icy conditions in Caddo County. And along an icy part of I-40 in Custer County, a 45-year-old Oklahoma City man died after his semitrailer struck two others early Saturday and then was hit by a car. The patrol is investigating the wreck. Saturday’s storm followed one Friday that dumped freezing rain from Oklahoma to southern Illinois. A slick roadway was suspected in
a Missouri wreck Friday that killed a 33-year-old woman whose sport utility vehicle slid on an icy freeway overpass south of St. Louis and struck several trees. Later Friday, icy conditions were blamed for a pileup involving more than 20 vehicles in Wichita, Kansas, but no serious injuries were reported. The storm’s onset prompted the NFL to move the AFC divisional playoff game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and host team the Kansas Chiefs to Sunday evening to allow more time to treat roads and parking lots at Arrowhead Stadium. The game was scheduled to kick off at noon but now will start at 7:20 p.m. Many residents had prepared for the storms by stocking up on bread, milk and other necessities and by buying flashlights and generators to have on hand in case power gets knocked out.(ap)

DENPASAR - Bali provincial government is now trying to explore the potential of new regional revenue source through waste management services. In this case, the transport of waste from the source or the temporary disposal site to final landfill will be charged a levy. This levy to downstream waste management services will be set forth in the amendment draft of the regional bylaw (Perda) No.2/2011 on public service levies.
“In the past, we did not collect any levies to the waste in downstream, but now we do it. In the upstream people collect it, then they transport to downstream known as the regional landfill,” said the Head of the Bali Revenue Services, Made Santha, in Denpasar on Friday (Jan.13). According to Santha, there are approximately 4,600 cubic meters of waste sent to Suwung regional landfill per month. The potential of revenue to be obtained can reach around IDR 2.8 billion per year from waste levies. Principles and objectives of the levy to public services will be determined by taking into account the cost of providing the services, people’s capability, fairness aspect and effectiveness of controls over the services. Calculation of the levy will cover the cost of waste collection from the sources, transport cost from temporary disposal site to final landfill, the cost of providing location of the disposal or demolition to the cost of management. “When people are charged with levy, it is based on consideration that there is provision of services. The government has calculated with reasonable rates. It costs approximately IDR 2,500 per cubic meter,” he
explained. Santha added that so far the provincial government as the landfill owner has not got anything. It just receives the waste as well as must spend cost and resources to perform it. The revenue earned will go into the regional treasure that will be expended for funding program of activities. Technical Section Head of Waste Management Unit, Ni Made Armadi, said that the results of calculation of the operating cost and maintenance cost divided by services gets the amount of IDR 2,500 per cubic meter, without counting the cost of investment. The investment cost includes the cost of construction as well as the making of WWTP and revetment. “Yesterday we used the data of operating cost in November and December amounting to IDR 3.6 billion, so that we get IDR 2,559. We round it off to IDR 2,500 per cubic meter. As planned, it will be subsidized. It means that we do not need additional investment,” she said. Armadi asserted that government of Bali province only collects levies at the regional landfill. When it is not regional, the authority to collect the levies is done by district / municipal government. For instance, Buleleng, Jembrana and Karangasem manage their waste in their respective district. However, her agency will still discuss further related to the levies for the Sanitation and Landscaping Agency that transports the waste to Suwung landfill. “There is government directly transporting waste to Suwung landfill. We are still discussing about the regulation whether the government trucks will be charged the levies or not. In the regulation, the waste of public facilities and places worship is not charged,” she explained. (kmb32)
GIANYAR - Gianyar Tourism Office glanced at the potential of Indian tourists visit. It is following the trend of tourist visit from the country that tends to continuously increase each year. Head of the Gianyar Tourism Office, A.A. Ari Brahmanta, said on Friday (Jan. 13) the visit to Gianyar is still dominated by travelers from China, Europe and America. But lately, the visits of Indian travelers are also on the rise. This condition makes his agency attempt to gain market share of Indian travelers as maximal as possible. According to him, the interest of Indian travelers in Bali, especially Gianyar, is inseparable from the element of cultural similarities. In Gianyar, there are many heritages of Hindu culture which are very worthy to be offered as tourist attraction. “So, we’ll work on the tourism market of India more seriously. The others such as Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand mostly make a visit to Yogyakarta and West Java. It happens because of cultural elements including the shopping tourism growing in Yogyakarta and West Java,” he said. Through travel agencies we will continuously promote Gianyar overseas,” he explained. In the near future, the Tourism Office will formulate a marketing strategy with a number of tourism stakeholders. So far, the marketing remains to apply the old strategies. However, if there will be formulation of pattern considered more effective, then it will be surely applied. Further, he said that to complete the attraction of Gianyar, his agency considered the need for developing alternative tourism such as culinary tourism. Other than having great potential in the form of traditional culinary treasures, there is a trend where travelers also look for something to do with healthy food. “This is adequately potential to be developed. people to attend in 2017, but the concept was not always welcomed by locals. “I think there was a bit of a cringe factor really with most people, including myself”, said Parkes local and retiree Bob Bokeyar. “But I think we have come to love Elvis and love the festival over the years.”
First held in 1993, the festival was the brainchild of husband and wife Bob and Anne Steel, who then owned the Gracelands restaurant in this quiet town in New South Wales. January was thought to be the best time for the festival as it coincided with Presley’s birthday on January 8. (rtr)
When visiting him at his home, he said that the business has been initiated since decades ago. This man graduating from SMA TP45 Bangli high school has some experiences in bamboo craft making at some places. Before making birdcage crafts, he worked at a bamboo chair maker in Denpasar. “I have made bamboo birdcage crafts since 2002. At first, I have a hobby in raising birds. From this, I got the idea to make bamboo birdcage,” said Sang Gede Jati while adding that most birdcages he currently makes are for zosterops. Today, most orders are for zosterops birdcage. Considering the bird lovers currently tend to favor zosterops, the birdcage orders received are mostly for this bird, while the standard size is normally for chestnut-capped thrush and other birds. “Lately, more orders are for zosterops. The birdcage
has much smaller size. Since zosterops is commonly involved in contest, we receive more cage orders for this bird. They are from Gianyar, Klungkung, Denpasar and Tabanan, including Bangli itself. We are grateful as the result of this craft is very helpful to sustain our family daily needs,” he said. He can produce two to three birdcages of zosterops every day and one to two birdcages of larger size. “The workmanship is in appropriate with the size. If the size is smaller, I can produce more pieces and fewer pieces for larger size,” he said with a smile. The selling price is set in accordance with the size ordered. Besides, it also depends on the motive of the birdcage ordered considering that he makes several types of birdcage. “A small cage for zosterops is sold for IDR 50,000, while the larger size is for IDR 125,000-IDR 150,000. Then, a birdcage with more beautiful motive is sold for IDR 180,000-IDR 200,000,” he said. The birdcage is entirely made from his own bamboo without having to purchase. The bamboo in use belongs to petung, tali, jajang and ampel variety. “Indeed I never purchase the bamboo material because I have owned so that it just needs to take from its clusters. Therefor, I never run out of material,” said Sang Gede Jati. (kmb41)

Tradition ends in noble activity DENPASAR - Starting from a tradition, it becomes a noble social action. Perhaps this expression is worth giving to the three sisters consisting of Madeline, Olivia and Beatrice Safavi. They typically get a lot of sweets from neighbors and relatives on Halloween Day. They want to share the sweets with other children that are not as fortunate as them. “We are impossible to consume the entire sweets. So, we would like to give it to other children who may have never been given sweets by others,” said Madeline when met on Friday (Jan. 6). This social action named Project Sweet Tooth was initially followed by some children. However, now all the students at their school in Singapore also participate in the noble action. “Most children under 15 years old contributed their sweets. There are totally around 1,000 people,” said Madeline. According to her, the sweets are symbol of something very much favored by children. “By sharing the most valuable thing for us, then our empathy will emerge and be willing to share anything with others. On the contrary, for those who receive it will be very meaningful because they are receiving something valuable,” said Madeline. In the meantime, Olivia explained that the sweets were donated to several places and one of them is an
orphanage in Bali. When asked why she chose Bali, Olivia stated that since she first came to this island, she often saw abandoned children. “I’m sad to see this reality and want to share, even though they are only sweets because these are the only things we have today,” she added. In addition to Singapore and Bali, in 2015 the Project Sweet Tooth decided to send sweets in large quantities to Germany to be forwarded to children of the Syrian war refugees. The initiative got a lot of praise. Moreover, German Chancellor Angela Merkel personally sent a letter of thanks.
“We are very happy especially when seeing the excited faces of children who are enjoying the sweets,” said Beatrice, the youngest. For 2017, one of the orphanages in Bangli is selected to receive it. Dozens of candy packages are brought from Singapore to be shared there. “Hopefully, more and more people will be inspired by this activity. They do not have to donate sweets but whatever they possess can be contributed to ease the burden on less fortunate children,” said Madeline. The Project Sweet Tooth having been running for ten years has donated more than 100,000 sweets. (ad)

Malaysian communities in denial after major paedophile case-police
KUALA LUMPUR - More than six months after Richard Huckle was sentenced to life in jail for sexually abusing scores of children, most of the families in the Malaysian communities where he lived are declining counselling and other help, police say. Huckle had posed as a freelance photographer, English teacher and Western philanthropist over the past decade to gain access mostly to impoverished communities in Kuala Lumpur, where taboos around child sex abuse often prevent families from disclosing it. Police reached out to 320 adults and 101 children in two communities affected by Huckle, Ong Chin Lan, the head of the Sexual, Women and Children Investigation Division of the Malaysian national police said in an interview. “We have identified a few victims. We have tried to identify communities,” Ong said. “But we respect the parents and guardians’ four dead deer and other evidences such as two rifles and car will be handed over to police for further action.
Even though they have been intercepted, the five culprits who had dropped out of the car could escape. The officers secured a silver-colored Suzuki APV car with license plate DK 573 IS at the exit gates in the front of the Tegalbunder Section II office.

still ran into the forest. Until Saturday morning, forest rangers still combed the forest, while the APV car is secured. TNBB administrative subdivision head, Wiryawan, confirmed the arrest on Saturday. Britain’s May to call for national unity in major Brexit speech LONDON - Prime Minister Theresa May will use a major speech on Brexit next week to call on Britons to reject the acrimony of last year’s referendum and unite around the vision of a Britain more open to the world, her office said on Sunday. May intends to kick off the formal process of negotiating the terms of Britain’s exit from the European Union by the end of March, but has given little away about what deal she will be seeking, frustrating some investors, businesses and lawmakers. She is due to make a speech in London on Tuesday before an audience including foreign diplomats as well as Britain’s own Brexit negotiating team and other senior officials, May’s Downing Street office said in a statement. BRUSSELS - The European Union’s Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said on Saturday that the EU will demand “special vigilance” before letting British financial firms access the bloc because of the large risk London could pose to the EU’s financial stability. Responding to a report in the Guardian which said he had told EU lawmakers that he wanted a special deal to maintain EU firms’ access to the City of London, Barnier tweeted: “When asked on equivalence I said: EU would need special vigilance on financial stability risk, not special deal to access the City.” An EU spokesman said the Guardian report did “not correctly reflect” Barnier’s comments to a closed door meeting with members of the European Parliament last week. EU officials said the point Barnier was making when asked about Brussels’ willingness after Brexit to recognise British financial regulations as “equivalent” in rigour to those of the EU was that, as a lot of EU business was likely to still pass through the City, EU equivalence rules would have to be much more tightly drafted compared to those for smaller centres. The Guardian quoted minutes prepared by parliamentary aides as saying Barnier told lawmakers: “Some very specific work has to be done in this area ... There will be a special/specific relationship. The suspect having been put into wanted list surrendered to Chief of Denpasar Police Criminal Investigation Unit, Reinhard, when he was in the Bali Police Headquarters. “We had pursued him to his boarding house in Denpasar and home village in Buleleng, but failed. Whether he was afraid of being chased after, the suspect

WASHINGTON - President-elect Donald Trump began a long holiday weekend that honors slain black civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. by attacking another rights activist and politician who had said he does not see Trump as a “legitimate president.”
U.S. Representative John Lewis, a Georgia Democrat, said on a segment of “Meet the Press” released by NBC on Friday he thought hacking by Russians had helped Trump, a Republican, get elected in November. Lewis said he does not plan to attend Trump’s Jan. 20 inauguration, the first time he would miss such an event since being elected to the House in 1986. On Saturday Trump tweeted that Lewis had falsely complained about the election results and instead “should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime infested).” “All talk, talk, talk - no action or results. Sad!” Trump tweeted. During the campaign, Trump said Democrats had failed African-Americans and Hispanics. “What the hell do you have to lose? Give me a chance,” he said at a rally last year in Ohio. Trump won the presidency with less support from black and Hispanic voters than any president in the last
40 years, only 8 percent and 28 percent, respectively, polling data showed. The 76-year-old Lewis, who has been a civil rights leader for more than half a century, was beaten by police during a march he helped lead in 1965 in Selma, Alabama, drawing attention to hurdles for blacks to vote. He protested alongside King that day and on other occasions. “I believe in forgiveness,” Lewis said in the NBC segment about Trump. “I believe in trying to work with people,” he said. “It’s going to be very difficult. I don’t see this president-elect as a legitimate president.” At least 10 other Democratic U.S. politicians have also said they plan to skip the inauguration, including Representatives Raul Grijalva, Lacy Clay and Mark Takano. Supporters of Trump see him as a brash person who tells things as they are. His comments about Lewis came ahead of an anti-Trump march in Washington headed by the Rev. Al Sharpton. The protest by about 2,000 marchers kicked off a week of rallies planned by dozens of groups against Trump before, during and after the inauguration. Haedar said he had discussed reforms that could be implemented by the state, with the aid of Muhammadiyah, to build the countrys economy. The President has to implement political and economic policies to boost the economic development of the nation, he revealed. “Reforms are needed to overcome social problems, and make the middle and lower classes of the society prosperous,” he remarked.
Muhammadiyah has conveyed two things to the President, namely, the need to review the control of land, which is a state asset, for the good of the general public and protection of the community, so that all members can enjoy the benefits of the countrys natural resources, he explained. The state must defend, empower and promote the welfare of the people, Haedar maintained. “It is impossible to promote the welfare of the people without the support of the political powers and the community, as they are vital elements needed to make the republic able and bring prosperity to the people, while protecting and advancing their interests,” he emphasized. JAKARTA — Most of Indonesia’s airline accidents have involved pilots who tested positive for drugs, including a Lion Air jet that slammed into the sea four years ago while trying to land on the tourist island of Bali, the chief of the national narcotics agency said.
Budi Waseso made the comments Thursday at a ceremony on Bali to inaugurate traditional village security guards as anti-drug volunteers. The comments are another blow to the image of the country’s airline industry after a video circulated online last month showing an apparently intoxicated pilot in the cockpit of a Citilink passenger plane. News reports this week said two pilots of another airline, Susi Air, owned by the country’s fisheries minister had recently tested positive for drugs. “Almost all air accidents in Indonesia, whether it was just a skid or whatever, the pilots are indicated to be positive for drugs,” Waseso told reporters. Earlier in the day he told the event attended by Bali’s governor that a Lion Air pilot in the spectacular 2013 crash
had “hallucinated” that the sea was part of the runway. His comments are at odds with other official accounts. After the crash, which miraculously caused no fatalities among the 108 people on board, the transport ministry said the pilots had not tested positive for drugs. The final report blamed the accident, which occurred in rain, on poor communication between the pilots and inadequate trading. Lion Air, the National Transport Safety Committee and the Ministry of Transport declined to comment. Indonesian airlines were previously barred from flying to Europe and the United States but foreign air safety regulators have upgraded the country, allowing some airlines to resume flights. The U.S. aviation regulator upgraded Indonesia’s safety rating in August. However, the International Air Transport Association’s former chief executive, Tony Tyler, who stepped down in June, said in 2015 he was very concerned about airline safety in Indonesia. LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Clippers returned their Christmas gift. Three weeks after losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in the prime time holiday game, the Clippers handed the Lakers a 113-97 beating in the rematch on Saturday at Staples Center. The Lakers’ win on Christmas Day was one of only two they had in 16 December games and ended an 11-game winning streak for the Clippers in the L.A. rivalry. But the Clippers were without Chris Paul and Blake Griffin due to injuries that day and lost J.J. Redick to a hamstring injury in mid-game. Griffin remains out, recovering from knee surgery, but Paul and Redick were back at full strength
for the rematch as the Clippers (28-14) extended their January win streak to six games. The Lakers (15-29), meanwhile, have gone 3-4 in January after a 2-14 December. The Clippers re-asserted their dominance in the rivalry quickly Saturday. Even with Paul and Redick hitting a combined 4-of-15 in the first half, the Clippers got off to a 10-4 start, went on an 11-0 run later in the first quarter (with Austin Rivers scoring nine points in the opening quarter) and built a 58-39 halftime lead. Clippers center DeAndre Jordan had a double-double by halftime (12 points and 10 rebounds) and finished with a game-high 24 points on 12-of-13 shooting and added

Inflatable tubes, swung up and down to the beat of the anthem shortly before, were hit in frustration against seats and metal rails. Gabon responded in the second half. Denis Bouanga hit a curling right-foot shot that was pushed away by the Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper just before he provided the pass for Aubameyang to knock home the 2017 African Cup’s first goal in the 52nd minute. LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Clippers returned their Christmas gift. Three weeks after losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in the prime time holiday game, the Clippers handed the Lakers a 113-97 beating in the rematch on Saturday at Staples Center. The Lakers’ win on Christmas Day was one of only two they had in 16 December games and ended an 11-game winning streak for the Clippers in the L.A. rivalry. But the Clippers were without Chris Paul and Blake Griffin due to injuries that day and lost J.J. Redick to a hamstring injury in mid-game. Griffin remains out, recovering from knee surgery, but Paul and Redick were back at full strength

Trump attacks civil rights leader who questioned his election win
WASHINGTON - President-elect Donald Trump began a long holiday weekend that honors slain black civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. by attacking another rights activist and politician who had said he does not see Trump as a “legitimate president.”
U.S. Representative John Lewis, a Georgia Democrat, said on a segment of “Meet the Press” released by NBC on Friday he thought hacking by Russians had helped Trump, a Republican, get elected in November. Lewis said he does not plan to attend Trump’s Jan. 20 inauguration, the first time he would miss such an event since being elected to the House in 1986. On Saturday Trump tweeted that Lewis had falsely complained about the election results and instead “should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime infested).” “All talk, talk, talk - no action or results. Sad!” Trump tweeted. During the campaign, Trump said Democrats had failed African-Americans and Hispanics. “What the hell do you have to lose? Give me a chance,” he said at a rally last year in Ohio. Trump won the presidency with less support from black and Hispanic voters than any president in the last
40 years, only 8 percent and 28 percent, respectively, polling data showed. The 76-year-old Lewis, who has been a civil rights leader for more than half a century, was beaten by police during a march he helped lead in 1965 in Selma, Alabama, drawing attention to hurdles for blacks to vote. He protested alongside King that day and on other occasions. “I believe in forgiveness,” Lewis said in the NBC segment about Trump. “I believe in trying to work with people,” he said. “It’s going to be very difficult. I don’t see this president-elect as a legitimate president.” At least 10 other Democratic U.S. politicians have also said they plan to skip the inauguration, including Representatives Raul Grijalva, Lacy Clay and Mark Takano. Supporters of Trump see him as a brash person who tells things as they are. His comments about Lewis came ahead of an anti-Trump march in Washington headed by the Rev. Al Sharpton. The protest by about 2,000 marchers kicked off a week of rallies planned by dozens of groups against Trump before, during and after the inauguration. If it does, it will not help peace and we hope it does not happen,” Abbas told reporters outside the Vatican gates minutes after 25 minutes of talks with the pope. Abbas, who spoke through an interpreter, stopped in Rome to open the new embassy of the State of Palestine to the Vatican. Trump’s promise to relocate the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem would upend decades of U.S. policy. Israel and the Palestinians, who are seeking a state of their own, both claim Jerusalem as their capital. Successive U.S. administrations have said the city’s status must be negotiated. Jerusalem, which Israeli has declared its “united and eternal capital,” is home to sites sacred to Jews, Muslims and Christians. JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) met with Haedar Nashir, chief of Muhammadiyah, a major Islamic organization in the country, here, Friday to discuss efforts to promote social justice toward the development of the nation. “We discussed a major problem facing our nation; the economic gap and its multiple aspects,” he informed the media after the meeting over lunch. Haedar said he had discussed reforms that could be implemented by the state, with the aid of Muhammadiyah, to build the countrys economy. The President has to implement political and economic policies to boost the economic development of the nation, he revealed. “Reforms are needed to overcome social problems, and make the middle and lower classes of the society prosperous,” he remarked.
Muhammadiyah has conveyed two things to the President, namely, the need to review the control of land, which is a state asset, for the good of the general public and protection of the community, so that all members can enjoy the benefits of the countrys natural resources, he explained. The state must defend, empower and promote the welfare of the people, Haedar maintained. “It is impossible to promote the welfare of the people without the support of the political powers and the community, as they are vital elements needed to make the republic able and bring prosperity to the people, while protecting and advancing their interests,” he emphasized. President Joko Widodo, Wednesday, had invited the chief of another major Islamic organization Nahdlatul Ulama to lunch, during which they discussed radicalism and intolerance. (ant)

JAKARTA — Most of Indonesia’s airline accidents have involved pilots who tested positive for drugs, including a Lion Air jet that slammed into the sea four years ago while trying to land on the tourist island of Bali, the chief of the national narcotics agency said.
Budi Waseso made the comments Thursday at a ceremony on Bali to inaugurate traditional village security guards as anti-drug volunteers. The comments are another blow to the image of the country’s airline industry after a video circulated online last month showing an apparently intoxicated pilot in the cockpit of a Citilink passenger plane. News reports this week said two pilots of another airline, Susi Air, owned by the country’s fisheries minister had recently tested positive for drugs. “Almost all air accidents in Indonesia, whether it was just a skid or whatever, the pilots are indicated to be positive for drugs,” Waseso told reporters. Earlier in the day he told the event attended by Bali’s governor that a Lion Air pilot in the spectacular 2013 crash
had “hallucinated” that the sea was part of the runway. His comments are at odds with other official accounts. After the crash, which miraculously caused no fatalities among the 108 people on board, the transport ministry said the pilots had not tested positive for drugs. The final report blamed the accident, which occurred in rain, on poor communication between the pilots and inadequate trading. Lion Air, the National Transport Safety Committee and the Ministry of Transport declined to comment. Indonesian airlines were previously barred from flying to Europe and the United States but foreign air safety regulators have upgraded the country, allowing some airlines to resume flights. The U.S. aviation regulator upgraded Indonesia’s safety rating in August. However, the International Air Transport Association’s former chief executive, Tony Tyler, who stepped down in June, said in 2015 he was very concerned about airline safety in Indonesia. His comments reflected worries about rapid growth in the number of planes in the skies and the need to upgrade air traffic management systems. (ap)

BRUSSELS - The European Union’s Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said on Saturday that the EU will demand “special vigilance” before letting British financial firms access the bloc because of the large risk London could pose to the EU’s financial stability. Responding to a report in the Guardian which said he had told EU lawmakers that he wanted a special deal to maintain EU firms’ access to the City of London, Barnier tweeted: “When asked on equivalence I said: EU would need special vigilance on financial stability risk, not special deal to access the City.” An EU spokesman said the Guardian report did “not correctly reflect” Barnier’s comments to a closed door meeting with members of the European Parliament last week. EU officials said the point Barnier was making when asked about Brussels’ willingness after Brexit to recognise British financial regulations as “equivalent” in rigour to those of the EU was that, as a lot of EU business was likely to still pass through the City, EU equivalence rules would have to be much more tightly drafted compared to those for smaller centres. The Guardian quoted minutes prepared by parliamentary aides as saying Barnier told lawmakers: “Some very specific work has to be done in this area ... There will be a special/specific relationship. After being fugitive, Puncher of traveler surrenders to police Denpasar (Bali Post) - Having been hunted to his native village of Munduk, Buleleng, the culprit of punching Sarkisian Argam, 31, from Ukraine at La Favela Bar & Resto, I Made Subawa alias Step, was finally surrendered to police on Friday (Jan. 13). The suspect having been put into wanted list surrendered to Chief of Denpasar Police Criminal Investigation Unit, Reinhard, when he was in the Bali Police Headquarters. “We had pursued him to his boarding house in Denpasar and home village in Buleleng, but failed. Whether he was afraid of being chased after, the suspect
wanted to meet me to surrender,” said Reinhard. The suspect surrendered to police at 16:40. After that, he was taken by mobile detective personnel to Denpasar Police Headquarters. Malaysian communities in denial after major paedophile case-police
KUALA LUMPUR - More than six months after Richard Huckle was sentenced to life in jail for sexually abusing scores of children, most of the families in the Malaysian communities where he lived are declining counselling and other help, police say. Huckle had posed as a freelance photographer, English teacher and Western philanthropist over the past decade to gain access mostly to impoverished communities in Kuala Lumpur, where taboos around child sex abuse often prevent families from disclosing it. Police reached out to 320 adults and 101 children in two communities affected by Huckle, Ong Chin Lan, the head of the Sexual, Women and Children Investigation Division of the Malaysian national police said in an interview. “We have identified a few victims. We have tried to identify communities,” Ong said. “But we respect the parents and guardians’ four dead deer and other evidences such as two rifles and car will be handed over to police for further action.
Even though they have been intercepted, the five culprits who had dropped out of the car could escape. The officers secured a silver-colored Suzuki APV car with license plate DK 573 IS at the exit gates in the front of the Tegalbunder Section II office.
As information, the arrest started from the information of the TNBB officers in charge of night shift at section II in the Buleleng region approximately at 00:30. Around Prapat Agung, there was suspicious activity using private car. It was suspected as a poaching in the conservation
area. After that, four forest rangers were deployed to intercept at the exit gates around Tegalbunder. Approximately at 03:00, the car was about to go out and stopped for inspection. Five people were out of the car. When examined, some evidences of hunting like rifles and dead deer were found. When would be examined, the five culprits fled into the woods. Forest rangers had given twice warning shots but they
still ran into the forest. Until Saturday morning, forest rangers still combed the forest, while the APV car is secured. TNBB administrative subdivision head, Wiryawan, confirmed the arrest on Saturday. The arrest was made when the officers intercepted at the exit gates in front of the section II office at Tegalbunder area. The officers secured two assembled rifles of caliber 5.5 mm,

Britain’s May to call for national unity in major Brexit speech LONDON - Prime Minister Theresa May will use a major speech on Brexit next week to call on Britons to reject the acrimony of last year’s referendum and unite around the vision of a Britain more open to the world, her office said on Sunday. First held in 1993, the festival was the brainchild of husband and wife Bob and Anne Steel, who then owned the Gracelands restaurant in this quiet town in New South Wales. January was thought to be the best time for the festival as it coincided with Presley’s birthday on January 8. (rtr)

This man graduating from SMA TP45 Bangli high school has some experiences in bamboo craft making at some places. Before making birdcage crafts, he worked at a bamboo chair maker in Denpasar. “I have made bamboo birdcage crafts since 2002. At first, I have a hobby in raising birds. From this, I got the idea to make bamboo birdcage,” said Sang Gede Jati while adding that most birdcages he currently makes are for zosterops. Today, most orders are for zosterops birdcage. Considering the bird lovers currently tend to favor zosterops, the birdcage orders received are mostly for this bird, while the standard size is normally for chestnut-capped thrush and other birds. “Lately, more orders are for zosterops. The birdcage
has much smaller size. Since zosterops is commonly involved in contest, we receive more cage orders for this bird. They are from Gianyar, Klungkung, Denpasar and Tabanan, including Bangli itself. We are grateful as the result of this craft is very helpful to sustain our family daily needs,” he said. He can produce two to three birdcages of zosterops every day and one to two birdcages of larger size. “The workmanship is in appropriate with the size. If the size is smaller, I can produce more pieces and fewer pieces for larger size,” he said with a smile. The selling price is set in accordance with the size ordered. Besides, it also depends on the motive of the birdcage ordered considering that he makes several types of birdcage. “A small cage for zosterops is sold for IDR 50,000, while the larger size is for IDR 125,000-IDR 150,000. Then, a birdcage with more beautiful motive is sold for IDR 180,000-IDR 200,000,” he said. The birdcage is entirely made from his own bamboo without having to purchase. The bamboo in use belongs to petung, tali, jajang and ampel variety. “Indeed I never purchase the bamboo material because I have owned so that it just needs to take from its clusters. Tradition ends in noble activity DENPASAR - Starting from a tradition, it becomes a noble social action. Perhaps this expression is worth giving to the three sisters consisting of Madeline, Olivia and Beatrice Safavi. They typically get a lot of sweets from neighbors and relatives on Halloween Day. They want to share the sweets with other children that are not as fortunate as them. “We are impossible to consume the entire sweets. So, we would like to give it to other children who may have never been given sweets by others,” said Madeline when met on Friday (Jan. 6). This social action named Project Sweet Tooth was initially followed by some children. However, now all the students at their school in Singapore also participate in the noble action. “Most children under 15 years old contributed their sweets. There are totally around 1,000 people,” said Madeline. According to her, the sweets are symbol of something very much favored by children. “By sharing the most valuable thing for us, then our empathy will emerge and be willing to share anything with others. On the contrary, for those who receive it will be very meaningful because they are receiving something valuable,” said Madeline. In the meantime, Olivia explained that the sweets were donated to several places and one of them is an
orphanage in Bali. When asked why she chose Bali, Olivia stated that since she first came to this island, she often saw abandoned children. “I’m sad to see this reality and want to share, even though they are only sweets because these are the only things we have today,” she added. In addition to Singapore and Bali, in 2015 the Project Sweet Tooth decided to send sweets in large quantities to Germany to be forwarded to children of the Syrian war refugees. The initiative got a lot of praise. Moreover, German Chancellor Angela Merkel personally sent a letter of thanks.
“We are very happy especially when seeing the excited faces of children who are enjoying the sweets,” said Beatrice, the youngest. For 2017, one of the orphanages in Bangli is selected to receive it. Dozens of candy packages are brought from Singapore to be shared there. “Hopefully, more and more people will be inspired by this activity. They do not have to donate sweets but whatever they possess can be contributed to ease the burden on less fortunate children,” said Madeline. The Project Sweet Tooth having been running for ten years has donated more than 100,000 sweets. (ad)

DENPASAR - Bali provincial government is now trying to explore the potential of new regional revenue source through waste management services. In this case, the transport of waste from the source or the temporary disposal site to final landfill will be charged a levy. This levy to downstream waste management services will be set forth in the amendment draft of the regional bylaw (Perda) No.2/2011 on public service levies.
“In the past, we did not collect any levies to the waste in downstream, but now we do it. In the upstream people collect it, then they transport to downstream known as the regional landfill,” said the Head of the Bali Revenue Services, Made Santha, in Denpasar on Friday (Jan.13). According to Santha, there are approximately 4,600 cubic meters of waste sent to Suwung regional landfill per month. The potential of revenue to be obtained can reach around IDR 2.8 billion per year from waste levies. Principles and objectives of the levy to public services will be determined by taking into account the cost of providing the services, people’s capability, fairness aspect and effectiveness of controls over the services. Calculation of the levy will cover the cost of waste collection from the sources, transport cost from temporary disposal site to final landfill, the cost of providing location of the disposal or demolition to the cost of management. “When people are charged with levy, it is based on consideration that there is provision of services. The government has calculated with reasonable rates. It costs approximately IDR 2,500 per cubic meter,” he
explained. Santha added that so far the provincial government as the landfill owner has not got anything. It just receives the waste as well as must spend cost and resources to perform it. The revenue earned will go into the regional treasure that will be expended for funding program of activities. Technical Section Head of Waste Management Unit, Ni Made Armadi, said that the results of calculation of the operating cost and maintenance cost divided by services gets the amount of IDR 2,500 per cubic meter, without counting the cost of investment. The investment cost includes the cost of construction as well as the making of WWTP and revetment. “Yesterday we used the data of operating cost in November and December amounting to IDR 3.6 billion, so that we get IDR 2,559. We round it off to IDR 2,500 per cubic meter. As planned, it will be subsidized. It means that we do not need additional investment,” she said. Armadi asserted that government of Bali province only collects levies at the regional landfill. When it is not regional, the authority to collect the levies is done by district / municipal government. For instance, Buleleng, Jembrana and Karangasem manage their waste in their respective district. However, her agency will still discuss further related to the levies for the Sanitation and Landscaping Agency that transports the waste to Suwung landfill. “There is government directly transporting waste to Suwung landfill. We are still discussing about the regulation whether the government trucks will be charged the levies or not. In the regulation, the waste of public facilities and places worship is not charged,” she explained. (kmb32)

In Gianyar, there are many heritages of Hindu culture which are very worthy to be offered as tourist attraction. “So, we’ll work on the tourism market of India more seriously. The others such as Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand mostly make a visit to Yogyakarta and West Java. It happens because of cultural elements including the shopping tourism growing in Yogyakarta and West Java,” he said. Through travel agencies we will continuously promote Gianyar overseas,” he explained. In the near future, the Tourism Office will formulate a marketing strategy with a number of tourism stakeholders. So far, the marketing remains to apply the old strategies. However, if there will be formulation of pattern considered more effective, then it will be surely applied. Further, he said that to complete the attraction of Gianyar, his agency considered the need for developing alternative tourism such as culinary tourism. Other than having great potential in the form of traditional culinary treasures, there is a trend where travelers also look for something to do with healthy food. “This is adequately potential to be developed. Priyanka Chopra recovering after mishap on ‘Quantico’ set
LOS ANGELES - Actress Priyanka Chopra is resting at home after a “minor incident” on the set of her ABC show “Quantico,” the network said Friday. Celebrity news website TMZ, citing unnamed sources, said Chopra had slipped and fallen during a stunt and suffered a concussion after hitting her head. In a statement, ABC did not confirm this but said a “minor incident” took place on the New York set of the FBI drama series on Thursday night.
“It would be premature to comment further until we have all the information. Priyanka was examined by a doctor, released and is home resting comfortably,” the network added. A representative for the actress said she will return to work after the weekend.
Walt Disney Co.’s ABC did not comment further on whether production of the show will be halted, but trade publication Variety said production will not be shut down while Chopra recovers. Chopra, 34, made her transition from Bollywood to Hollywood as the lead of “Quantico,” in which she plays an FBI recruit turned CIA agent. She will also be starring in the upcoming film reboot of “Baywatch.” (rtr)

More freezing rain, temperatures expected for central US

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A third wave of sleet and drizzle could hit parts of the central U.S. on the eve of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, weather officials said, and temperatures threaten to stay near or below freezing and add to the treacherous mix. Ice buildups of one-quarter to slightly less than a half inch were expected late Saturday and Sunday morning from southeastern Kansas to central Missouri. Becky Allmeroth, a state maintenance engineer for the Missouri Department of Transportation, said ice is “the most difficult storm to fight.” “We are keeping up with the changing conditions, but it is a continual battle,” she said of the department’s around-the-clock scrambling to treat the glazed roads. “The precipitation is coming in waves, and we have to apply more salt.” Icy roads Saturday created dangerous conditions and travel head-
aches for many people who avoided authorities’ pleas to stay indoors except for necessary outings. Interstate 40 in western Oklahoma was closed in two places because of wrecks, including the jackknifing of several semitrailers in icy conditions in Caddo County. And along an icy part of I-40 in Custer County, a 45-year-old Oklahoma City man died after his semitrailer struck two others early Saturday and then was hit by a car. The patrol is investigating the wreck. Saturday’s storm followed one Friday that dumped freezing rain from Oklahoma to southern Illinois. A slick roadway was suspected in
a Missouri wreck Friday that killed a 33-year-old woman whose sport utility vehicle slid on an icy freeway overpass south of St. Louis and struck several trees. Later Friday, icy conditions were blamed for a pileup involving more than 20 vehicles in Wichita, Kansas, but no serious injuries were reported. The storm’s onset prompted the NFL to move the AFC divisional playoff game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and host team the Kansas Chiefs to Sunday evening to allow more time to treat roads and parking lots at Arrowhead Stadium. The game was scheduled to kick off at noon but now will start at 7:20 p.m. Many residents had prepared for the storms by stocking up on bread, milk and other necessities and by buying flashlights and generators to have on hand in case power gets knocked out.(ap)
