CHICAGO - Mexican-born actress Salma Hayek has joined the ranks of Hollywood women accusing movie producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct, calling him a “monster” in an article published by the New York Times on Tuesday. “For years, he was my monster,” Hayek wrote in the opinion piece in which she included descriptions of sexual harassment, bullying and threats. Holly Baird, a spokeswoman for Weinstein, issued a statement on his behalf on Wednesday night disputing Hayek’s account and calling her allegations of sexual misconduct inaccurate. More than 50 women have claimed that Weinstein sexually harassed or assaulted them over the past three decades. Weinstein has denied having non-consensual sex with anyone. Reuters has been unable to independently confirm any of the accusations against Weinstein. Hayek’s spokeswoman had no immediate comment on Wednesday. Police in New York, Los Angeles, Beverly Hills and London have said they are investigating allegations of sexual assault or rape by

Weinstein. Hayek wrote in the article that she was inspired to share her experiences after other women came forward. Her account largely centered around the time she was involved with making the 2002 film, “Frida,” in which she portrayed Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Hayek wrote that she was pleased to have the opportunity to work with Weinstein and Miramax, which he then owned, because it was “synonymous with quality, sophistication and risk taking in films.” But, she wrote, she found herself rebuffing sexual advances and requests from Weinstein. “No to letting him give me oral sex,” Hayek wrote as one of several examples. “And with every refusal came Harvey’s Machiavellian rage.” (rtr)

Indonesia corruption court indicts ex-parliament speaker after delays

JAKARTA - Indonesian prosecutors charged a former parliament speaker Setya Novanto on Wednesday in connection with a $170 million graft scandal after he held up proceedings for hours at the opening of his trial, saying he was ill. Novanto has been brought to trial by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), which suspects extensive pilfering of public funds linked to a national identity card programme. “The defendant both directly and indirectly intervened in the budgeting and procurement of goods and services,” prosecutor Irene Putri said while reading out the indictment. The charges include allegations Novanto received $7.3 million in bribes, and a $135,000 watch, for his role in fixing a marked-up budget for the identity card programme. Novanto, who has denied wrongdoing, faces up to 20 years in prison, according to prosecutors. According to local media reports, the Golkar Party, which Novanto had also chaired, replaced him with Air-

The politician has earned a reputation for his capacity to cling to power through several previous corruption cases. media users, many of whom have mocked him in widely shared posts. Novanto arrived at court on Wednesday in a white shirt and a bright orange jacket usually worn by KPK graft suspects, and held up court proceedings when he said he had diarrhoea and needed medical attention. Volcanic ashe disrupt 300 ha of paddy field in three subdistricts

AMLAPURA - Volcanic ash and cold lava flows from Mount Agung s recent eruption have seriously impacted the agricultural sector in Karangasem. At least 3000 hectares of paddy fields have been seriously damaged and 7 hecatares of other farm products have experience crop failure as a result of the volcanic ash.

Head of the Karangasem Agriculture Agency, I Wayan Supandi, said on Wednesday (Dec. 13) that the paddy fields affected by volcanic ash are spread across three subdistricts; Selat, Rendang and Bebandem. The degree of damage varies from light to severe. Light damage is defined as less than 25 percent crop failure, medium category (50 percent) and severe category (75 percent). Severe damage occurred to paddy fields directly adjacent to the flow of Yeh Sah River that flows down from Mount Agung as cold lava flows hit 7 hectares of the paddy fields. Most of the damaged paddy in the region were not ready to harvest, but farmers have gone again and har-

vested the plants to reduce their losses. “At the market, dry grain mill is worth IDR 3,800 per kilogram. If the quality is sub-standard the price of course drops”, said Supandi. Supandi explained that he could not yet confirm the value of the farmers losses. Obvisouly the ongoign volcanic activity has forced farmers to delay the planting of new crops so many fields have been left empty. Famrers in Sideman have also decided to delay planting rice but they are still planting coarse grain, roots and tubers as these are more resilient. A farmer at Subak Sidemen, 52 year old I Made Karang, said that this season he is switching crops even though there is a lot of water which is good for planting rice. He and other subak members are not planting rice because their subak irrigation channel has been closed as it uses water from the Yeh Sah River tat is prone to cold lava flows. . Volcanic ash filled mud can damage the irrigation channels and is not good for the soil. “Fortunately, before the ash rained down, we had already harvested our crops. Now we are just waiting”, he said. (117)

PHRI hopes Christmas and New Year holiday will see more tourists

SEMARAPURA - The eruptions of Mount Agung in Karangasem have had a serioius impact on tourism all over Bali – including in the district of Klungkung. Since Mount Agung first erupted, hotel occupancy rates in Nusa Penida, Klungkung have dropped by 80 percent. The Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Klungkung very much hope that Mountain Agung that is still at level 4 (warning) alert level will not be turbulent so that the end of year holiday season will see occupancy rates increase. Chairman of PHRI Klungkung, Wayan Kariana, said on Wednesday (Dec. 13) that currently the average hotel occupancy rates in Nusa Penida are just 10-20 percent as they have been since Ngurah Rai Airport shut down for a few days in late November. “When the alert level for Mount Agung was first raised to level IV in late Septemeber there was no effect on tourism. But that changed drastically after the ariport waw closed due to ash hazards>, he explained.

Kariana however added that as Christmas and New Years approach there has been a very slight increase in the number of tourist visits. “There have been some bookings since the middle of this month, but only about 10 percent of the usual number”, he said. He hoped the Mount Agung currently remaining in warning alert level is no longer turbulent. So, there is no cancellation of hotel bookings made by tourists. “Hopefully, there the mountian will remain calm so these bookings are not cancelled and hotel occupancy rates can be boosted again this month”, he added. If however Mount Agung erupts again, occupancy rates will certainly drop again – even below 10 percent and have a negative impact on the hotel and restaurant workers. “Hopefully, that will not happen” he said. Most of Klungkungs hotels and restaurants are located in Nusa Penida with a total of 71, while Nusa Lembongan has 113 and Jungut Batu has 130. (kmb40)

Food stocks remain secure for 11,247 refugees

SEMARAPURA - Since the Mount Agung is still active, thousands of residents of Karangasem are still living in evacuation camps. As of Wednesday (Dec 13) there were a total of 11,247 evcauees in Klungkung and food stocks remain sufficient. Head of the Klungkung Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Putu Widiada, when met on Wednesday said that 1, 257 of the evacuees are being sheltered at Swecapura Stadium. While the remaining are spread across 104 points in 43 villages in three subdistricts: Klungkung, Banjarangkan and Dawan. Widiada said that so far the food supply for refugees ample and that as of Wednesday afternnon there were still 12 tons of rice that is enough to last 3 days. “Each day, they need about 4.4 tons of rice”, he explained. Likewise, other food stocks also remain sufficient. Widiada added that non- rice food stocks are being donated by a private donor and said that he hopes the aid for evac-

To make Bali crowded, we need to promote Bali not our industry or not our hotels,” said a tourism practitioner, Ida Bagus Ngurah Wijaya, in a discussion with the governor and tourism component of Bali in the meeting room of Bali Tourism Office on Tuesday (Dec. 12). According to Wijaya, Bali has had capital through predicate as the best destination in the world for many years. In other words, all parties including the government should be able to show off the beauty of tourist objects in Bali. “We

FRANKFURT - The European Central Bank is likely to bump up some of its economic forecasts on Thursday and may debate tweaking its pledge to keep money at its current, ultra-easy level, but will ultimately reaffirm is policy stance. Meeting just six weeks after agreeing to halve asset buys, policymakers are likely to argue that growth continues to improve but ultralow borrowing costs are still needed to lift inflation as the recovery remains dependent on the bank’s accommodation. Still, policy hawks are likely to keep pushing ECB President Mario Draghi to prepare markets for an end to asset buys sometime next year, arguing for incremental changes in the bank’s message to set up a formal decision by mid-year on ending a 2.55 trillion euro ($3 trillion) bond purchase scheme. Having faced five years of stagnant or falling prices, the ECB has deployed its entire policy arsenal, cutting rates into negative territory, giving banks cheap loans and hoovering up bonds, all in the hope of boosting growth and rekindling inflation. Its work has paid off as the euro zone recovery is now well into its fifth year thanks to nine million new jobs and economic convergence between poorer periphery countries like Italy and Greece, and the bloc’s richest, appears to be restarting. U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said in a statement that the digital economy was important for U.S. and global growth, and the effort sought “strong market-based rules in this area.” “Initiatives like this among like-minded countries offer a positive way forward for the WTO in the future,” Lighthizer added. E-commerce, which developed largely after the WTO’s creation in 1995, was not part of the Doha round of talks that began in 2001 and eventually collapsed more than a decade later. Many countries, with India at the fore, insist that Doha-round development issues must be dealt with before new issues can be tackled. But other countries say the WTO needs to move with the times, and note that 70 regional trade agreements already include provisions or chapters on e-commerce, according to a recent study. Dressed in traditional attire, carrying offerings of fruit and flowers in large baskets, the villagers scrabbled their ways up the rocky path to a large flat area in front of the crater at the top of Mount Batur. Firefighters defend homes as huge California wildfire rages on

LOS ANGELES - Firefighters grappling with a wildfire that has burned out of control for 10 days on California’s scenic coastline, destroying more than 700 homes, sought on Wednesday to defend homes from flames whipped by resurgent Santa Ana winds. The so-called Thomas Fire, already the state’s fifth-largest wildland blaze on record, remained a threat to the communities of Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, Summerland and Montecito as darkness fell and winds picked up, fire officials said. “Very high fuel loading, critically low fuel moistures, above average temperatures and single-digit relative humidities will continue to support fire growth on the west, east and north sides of the Thomas incident,” the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said in a statement. “Firefighters will remain engaged in structure defense operations and scout for opportunities to establish direct perimeter control,” the department said. The Thomas Fire, which broke out on Dec. 4 near the community of Ojai, has traveled 27 miles (43 km), blackening more than 371 square miles (953 square km) in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, an area larger than New York City. Indonesia court rejects petition to bar consensual sex outside marriage

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s constitutional court on Thursday narrowly rejected a petition by a conservative group to make extramarital sex illegal, but rights activists braced for a renewal of the battle in parliament and other state institutions. Five of nine judges voted for the case to be thrown out, in a slim victory for rights activists who had feared the petition would spur moral policing and further discrimination against the gay community in the world’s largest Muslim-majority country. Most Indonesians adhere to a moderate form of Islam under an officially secular system, but there has been rise of a hardline, politicized Islam in recent years, which until recently had stayed on the fringe of the nation’s politics. Constitutional court chief justice Arief Hidayat said existing laws on adultery did not conflict with the constitution and it was not the court’s authority to create new policies. The judge said the question could be put to parlia-

ment, which is currently deliberating revisions to the national criminal code. “The plaintiff should submit their petition to lawmakers, and there it should be an important input in the ongoing revision of the national criminal code,” Hidayat said, as he read a summary of the 600-page ruling. “Based on that view, the constitutional court is of the opinion that the petition is not legally sound.” Rights activists were comforted by the court’s decision, while expecting more challenges to come. “The decision is a relief because it shows it’s possible to challenge the creeping conservatism in society,” said Dede Oetomo, a prominent gay rights activist. “But it’s not over. There’s parliament, there are other state institutions, they can turn to education, social organisations,” he added. The Family Love Alliance (AILA), a group of conservative academics and activists which put forward the petition, said it would not give up its fight. “Aside from legal avenues, we can also go through government policy and programs so that

sexual deviance is minimised and is an agenda for all of us,” Euis Sunarti, a member of AILA, told reporters after the ruling. AILA’s petition had called for the definition of adultery to apply not just to married couples but to anyone in a marriage or outside it - effectively making all sex outside of marriage a crime. In their complaint, AILA said certain articles in the national criminal code “threaten the resilience of families and therefore of Indonesia itself.” Some rights activists said the petition was partly aimed at criminalizing gay sex, which is currently not regulated by the law except in the ultra-conservative province of Aceh and in cases of child abuse. Activists say such changes to the law would make it vulnerable to abuse, like the country’s draconian anti-pornography laws, to target the LGBT community. Islamic parties pushed the anti-pornography laws in parliament soon after Indonesia ushered in its democratic era in 1998 and actively push an anti-LGBT agenda today. (ant)

Azarenka, who won the Melbourne Park title in 2012 and 2013, returned to the WTA Tour in June after having a baby, but has been involved in a custody battle that has prevented her from playing since Wimbledon. Chinese clubs urged to develop youth or lose licenses - report TOKYO - Chinese soccer authorities are set to impose strict new regulations on the country’s clubs, using the threat of losing their professional licenses as a spur to establish a more comprehensive youth development programme. According to Titan Sports, the Chinese Football Association (CFA) will introduce rules in 2019 that force clubs in the top two tiers of the domestic league to create youth teams ranging from the under-13 bracket up to the under-19 level. The teams would play in competitions organised by the CFA and, claim Titan Sports, a failure to comply would see clubs forfeit their registration to play professionally. The CFA have yet to respond to a Reuters request for a comment on the matter. The move marks the latest CFA directive to enhance the future prospects of the national

team, who have struggled to make an international impact in the last decade-and-a-half. Laos Toyota FC will not be eligible to participate in the 2018 AFC Cup because of the Laos club’s previous involvement in match-fixing, Asian soccer’s governing body said on Thursday. The Asian Football Confederation said the club was involved in match-fixing during the 2015 and 2016 AFC Cup seasons. “Meeting yesterday, the AFC Entry Control Body (ECB) declared Lao Toyota Football Club ineligible to take part in the 2018 AFC Cup,” the continental

governing body said in a statement. “The ECB established that the club was directly and/or indirectly involved in activities aimed at arranging or influencing the outcome of matches during the 2015 and 2016 AFC Cup seasons.” Earlier this year, the AFC banned 22 players and officials from Laos and Cambodia for life for their involvement in match-fixing.
