Five decades and 200 films later, Jackie Chan ‘finally’ wins Oscar
LOS ANGELES - When Jackie Chan saw an Oscar at Sylvester Stallone’s house 23 years ago, he said that was the moment he decided he wanted one. On Saturday at the annual Governors Awards, the Chinese actor and martial arts star finally received his little gold statuette, an honorary Oscar for his decades of work in film. “After 56 years in the film industry, making more than 200 films, after so many bones, finally,” Chan, 62, quipped at the star-studded gala dinner while holding his Oscar. The actor recalled watching the ceremony with his parents and his father always asking him why he didn’t have Hollywood’s top acco-
lade despite having made so many movies. He praised his hometown Hong Kong for making him “proud to be Chinese,” and thanked his fans, saying they were the reason “I continue to make movies, jumping through windows, kicking and punching, breaking my bones.” The actor was introduced by his “Rush Hour” co-star Chris Tucker, actress Michelle Yeoh and Tom Hanks, who referred to him as “Jackie ‘Chantastic’ Chan.”
Hanks said it was especially gratifying to be able to acknowledge Chan’s work because martial arts and action comedy films were two genres often overlooked during awards season. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, hosts of the annual ceremony, also bestowed honorary Oscars on British film editor Anne V. Coates, casting director Lynn Stalmaster and prolific documentarian Frederick Wiseman. The evening was attended by Hollywood’s elite, including Denzel Washington, Lupita Nyong’o, Nicole Kidman, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Amy Adams and Dev Patel. (rtr)

MARRAKESH - The world is set to notch up a new heat record in 2016 after a sizzling 2015 as global warming stokes more floods and rising sea levels, the U.N. weather agency said on Monday at climate change talks overshadowed by Donald Trump’s election win. President-elect Trump has called climate change a hoax and a source in his transition team says he is seeking
quick ways to pull the United States out of the 2015 Paris Agreement, which aims to shift the world econ-
omy away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said this year would be the warmest since records began in the late 19th century, with average surface temperatures 1.2 degrees Celsius (2.2 Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial times. Sixteen of the 17 hottest years recorded have been in this century. “Another year. Another record,” WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said in a statement in Marrakesh, Morocco, where almost 200 nations are discussing ways to slow climate change. The heat, with impacts such as melting Greenland ice and damage to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, was stoked by an El Nino weather event in the Pacific early in the year and by man-made greenhouse gases, mainly from burning fossil fuels. “The extra heat from the powerful El Nino event has disappeared. The heat from global warming will continue,” he said. The WMO said it was “very likely” that 2016 would be the hottest, barring a freak chill in coming weeks.
PARIS DEAL The Paris deal, backed by almost 200 nations including the United States but rejected by Trump, has an overriding goal of limiting the rise in temperatures to “well below” 2C (3.6F) above pre-industrial times, ideally 1.5C (2.7F).

This decrease may happen due to many factors, other than as a result of the demolition of Badung Market and the weakening of national economy. He said that the impact of the fire
incident to Badung Market is significant. Of the revenue obtained by PD Pasar Denpasar at IDR 30 billion per year, a total of IDR 8 billion is generated by the Badung Market. Now, it means the revenue will reduce, not to mention the decrease in parking revenue, he said. Drop in revenues from parking in the market, he said, possibly happens because people no longer go to the
market every day. Probably, they thin out to go to the market, so that the parking acquisition clearly reduces. In the past, housewives might go to the market every day, but now they just do it for three or two times a week. Or they just seek an urgent need alone. This has resulted in a decline in the acquisition of parking revenue about 5 percent, he said. In the meantime, the market levy in general is not very influential as it is a fixed component. There is no effect on the visit to the market. However, since the Badung Market is not operating and the two other markets are closed, they have an impact on the decline in market revenue. (kmb12)
BANGLI - Product sales of the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Bangli district since the past few months have showed a decrease of about 30 percent. This condition causes businesses to be frustrated. The Head of the Bangli Cooperatives and the SMEs Agency, I Dewa Gede Suparta, said the national economic slump has quite significant impact on the SME sector in Bangli. Fulfillment of demand for products is no longer as ever before causing to be overwhelmed. “Since about three months, the product sales are quite sluggish. It slumps about 30 percent from the previous one,” he explained, Sunday (Nov. 13). Based on latest data, the number of SMEs in Bangli reaches approximately 42,000 units consisting of trade, agriculture, non-agriculture and services. The economy downturn is claimed not to have resulted in the
business to go bankrupt. “So far, businesses still survive,” he said. To generate sales, he admitted to intensify coaching. Aside from marketing, he also improved product quality. In addition, his agency is also still trying to establish cooperation of promotion where one of them with the Ministry of Cooperatives and the SMEs. “Coaching is still given so that businesses are ready to receive the orders from outside market any time,” he concluded. Earlier, a woven bamboo crafter from Tanggahan Peken hamlet, Sulahan, Susut, Wayan Suardana, said the product orders, especially export, are no longer received in large number as ever before. Such condition makes him frustrated. “Lately, there is no order from outside market. Previously, there were some orders from France,” he said. Moroccan vault protects seeds from climate change and war
RABAT — Should a doomsday agricultural crisis hit the world’s driest environments, scientists and farmers will turn to an up-and-coming research center and seed bank in Morocco to restock their harvests. Tucked away in the university hub of Irfane in Rabat, the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas, or ICARDA, hosts the largest collection of seeds in North Africa. “If for any reason, a particular community lost all their resources, we are capable of providing them with the seeds for restoration and rehabilitation,” says Ahmed Amri, head of ICARDA’s Genetic Resources Unit. The crucial role of seed banks in protecting biodiversity is receiving increasing attention because of climate change, which threatens to wipe out crops as dry areas of the world get even hotter and drier. The impact on African agriculture is among the topics being discussed at U.N. climate talks taking place through next week in Morocco. The site in Rabat has become ICARDA’s primary center of storage and research after its previous hub in Aleppo, Syria, was seized by an Islamist rebel group in September 2015. “We couldn’t continue doing this work because of the situation in Syria, so we decided to make arrangements to move elsewhere to continue our work,” says
Amri, who used to work in Aleppo, but is now leading genetic research efforts in Rabat. While many of the research activities moved to Rabat, 98 percent of the Aleppo center’s seeds were safely transferred to ICARDA’s center in neighboring Lebanon. Duplicates were also sent to a “doomsday” seed vault in Svalbard in the Norwegian Arctic, which serves as a backup for other seed banks worldwide. Rebels from the ultraconservative Ahrar al-Sham group have occupied the Aleppo center since September 2015, cutting off access to its 75 employees. Amri has daily contact with the five staff members who remain in Aleppo, including associate scientist Ali Shehadeh. “With the cease-fire, it’s stable and unstable at times,” Shehadeh told The Associated Press from Aleppo in a Skype interview facilitated by Amri. of thousands of seeds spanning from wheat and barley to lentils and chickpeas inside a vault in near-freezing temperatures. The seed bank not only preserves these essential staples but develops them to become more resistant to disease and a warming climate. Last year, Morocco faced an unprecedented drought that scientists and the government and have linked to climate change, with drier and warmer winters in Morocco and neighboring countries. Domestic grain production dropped, forcing the government to drop tariffs on imports to avoid shortages and stem rising prices. Last month, the government decided to temporarily remove import duties for lentils to lower the price just in time for the winter season — a time when lentils are widely consumed in Morocco. Scientists at the Rabat center work closely with farmers in Marchouch, a nearby rural town. The scientists provide seed samples to farmers who allocate about 2 percent of their own farm land to test the seeds and provide feedback to scientists. “We are looking for science-based solutions for farmers’ problems,” says Shiv Kumar Agrawal, a lentil breeder with ICARDA. These problems include contending with droughts, invasive insects and increasing production. Farmers report back to scientists on the results of the harvest yielded from the seed samples, after which further tests are conducted to improve the seeds’ durability and production yield. Farmer Abdellah Slimani, 48, president of a farmers’ cooperative in Marchouch, believes the feedback loop has helped him and fellow farmers to improve their own methods as climate change continues to impact harvests. “We hope that this year’s harvest will be better, God willing,” Slimani says. Bruce Campbell of the Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centers says the climate conference in Marrakech offers a unique opportunity to address the impact of climate change on African agriculture. “Considering all African countries have included agriculture in their climate adaption strategies, (the conference) will be the ideal setting to discuss how the most promising solutions can be deployed and indeed, funded,” he says. ‘Mud Dragon’ fossil shows dinosaurs thrived on eve of destruction
WASHINGTON- In a humid, tropical jungle in southern China eons ago, a remarkably bird-like dinosaur with wing-like arms, a toothless beak and a dome-shaped crest atop its head became trapped in mud, struggled in vain to escape and died. Workmen blasting bedrock while building a school near the city of Ganzhou unearthed a beautifully preserved fossil of the roughly 6.5foot-long (2-meter-long) dinosaur, nicknamed the “Mud Dragon,” still in that contorted position, scientists said on Thursday. The Cretaceous Period creature, called Tongtianlong limosus, lived 66 to 72 million years ago, at the twilight of the dinosaurs’ more than 160-million-year reign on Earth. It was a member of a group called oviraptorosaurs, one of the closest relatives to birds, which evolved earlier from small, feathered dinosaurs. Paleontologist Steve Brusatte of Scotland’s University of Edinburgh, who worked on the study published in the journal Scientific Reports, said the fossil adds to the understanding of dinosaur evolution on the eve of destruction. The discovery of Tongtianlong and five other oviraptorosaur species in southern China showed this group was still blossoming and diversifying during the last few mil-
lion years before an asteroid struck Earth about 66 million years ago, wiping out the dinosaurs, Brusatte said. “The fact there were so many of them is a testament to just how well the dinosaurs were doing right up until the end,” Brusatte added. The fossil preserved a tragic moment for posterity. “Its neck is arched, its head sticking up, its arms out-stretched to the sides. It is a strange posture,” Brusatte said. The fact that the fossil was found in rock formed from mud and the skeleton is in pristine condition suggests the dinosaur got mired in mud, tried to get free, but died and was buried, Brusatte said. Its scientific name means “muddy dragon on the road to heaven,” paying homage to how it perished. Other previous dramatic fossil finds include Mongolia’s famous “fighting dinosaurs,” a Velociraptor and Protoceratops apparently locked in mortal combat when a sand dune collapsed on them. Tongtianlong was a two-legged omnivore, with a bony crest on its short, squat skull that was probably used for display purposes to attract mates and intimidate rivals. Its arms likely had quill-like feathers layered over each other like on a wing, though it could not fly. (rtr)

All this time, the measures are only weeding and providing education for the public. In the meantime, physical development as part of the efforts to anticipate silting cannot be done. This happens because related regulations having the authority to manage the largest lake in Bali has not yet existed. This was conveyed by the Head of the Bangli Environment Agency (BLH), I Made Alit Parwata, Sunday (Nov. 13). Siltation of Lake Batur is still going on. One of the causes is the washing away of farmland around the area when it rains. To prevent from getting worse, preventive measures such as physical construction in the form of revet-
ment at the edge of the lake must be taken. However, it cannot be realized. “There is no regulation yet who authorizes to manage the lake, whether local, provincial or central government. It makes us unable to make physical con-
struction (revetment—Ed). It has something to do with the asset,” said Parwata. Regulation on the authority, he said, remains to be looked for the right patterns by the Ministry of Home Affairs together with the Ministry of Forestry and the Environment, and the House of Representatives. Hopefully, this can be resolved in the near future. “Now, the regulations are still being prepared. With confidence, it can be completed immediately. From the information gathered, the rubbish avalanche disaster occurred around 21:00. To open the road access buried under the piles of rubbish, the officers of the
regional disaster mitigation agency (BPBD) Tabanan did evacuation on Sunday (Nov. 13). “From the morning, our officers already evacuated, so that the road

BUSINESS China data point to steadier economy for now, but Trump victory adds to risks
BEIJING - China’s economy largely showed further signs of steadying in October as expected, but disappointing retail sales growth and fears of U.S. trade frictions under incoming President Donald Trump are increasingly clouding the outlook. Fixed-asset investment quickened slightly and beat expectations in January-October as the government stepped up infrastructure spending to support growth, official data showed on Monday.
But a number of other indicators released over the past week from exports to bank lending, as well as expectations of a slowdown in the heated property market, suggest economic momentum may falter in the months ahead. “On balance, today’s data suggest that the recent recovery in economic activity continued into the fourth quarter,” Capital Economics said in a note. “We expect growth to hold up well for another quarter or two. However, with credit growth now slowing and the property market beginning to cool the drivers of the recent recovery look set to fizzle out early next year.” China’s leaders have depended on a surging real estate market and government infrastructure spending to drive activity this year and look set to meet their growth target of 6.5 to 7 percent. The construction boom in turn has helped perk up the ailing industrial sector, spurring demand for cement to steel. But top policymakers and investors are also clearly growing more concerned about the risks of prolonged debt-fueled stimulus. China’s overall debt has jumped to more than 250 percent of GDP from 150 percent at the end of 2006, the kind of surge that in other countries has resulted in a financial bust or sharp economic slowdown, analysts say. “I believe the overall policy tone has turned to risk management as the authorities are concerned about asset bubbles,” said Singapore-based economist Zhou Hao at Commerzbank, predicting that the government will throttle back its aggressive stimulus before the end of the year. INVESTMENT STILL HEAVILY RELIANT ON GOVERNMENT Fixed-asset investment expanded 8.3 percent in the first 10 months from a year earlier, slightly ahead of market expectations and supported largely by government spending. JAKARTA - Indonesian police on Monday arrested five people in connection with a suspected militant attack on a church that killed one infant and injured three. Police said they were investigating possible links to the Islamic State extremist group. “Utter devastation” after major quake, aftershocks hit New Zealand
WELLINGTON - A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake pummelled central New Zealand early on Monday, killing at least two people, damaging roads and buildings and setting off hundreds of strong aftershocks. Marcello Lippi starts mission almost-impossible on Tuesday as he bids to take China to the 2018 World Cup. Lippi, who guided Italy to the 2006 World Cup title, was appointed in October to try and resuscitate China’s floundering qualification campaign. He kicks off against Qatar in the south-western city Kunming. China, which has qualified only once for a World Cup, has just one point from the first four games in Group A of third-round Asian qualifying, making victory against Qatar vital. “We will focus on first dealing with the Qataris and then Korea Republic,” Lippi was quoted as saying on the Asian Football Confederation’s website. “Our chief aim is World Cup qualification. I hope we can achieve a miracle.” Lippi has experience in China. From 2012 to 2014, he led Guangzhou Evergrande to three Chinese Super League titles as well as the Asian Champions League crown in 2013. In a warm-up game against a lower-league Chinese team last week, Lippi selected five players from his former club, indicating a strong reliance on the team which picked up a sixth successive domestic championship in October. “These are the players who have spent years training and playing together so they have telegraphic understanding with each other,” the former Juventus coach said. “This is the key for us to play well against Qatar.” The 68 year-old Lippi’s

“Utter devastation” after major quake, aftershocks hit New Zealand
WELLINGTON - A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake pummelled central New Zealand early on Monday, killing at least two people, damaging roads and buildings and setting off hundreds of strong aftershocks. Emergency response teams flew by helicopter to the region at the epicentre of the tremor, which struck just after midnight some 91 km (57 miles) northeast of Christchurch in the South Island, amid reports of injuries and collapsed buildings. “It’s just utter devastation, I just don’t know ... that’s months of work,” New Zealand Prime Minister John Key told Civil Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee after flying over the coastal town of Kaikoura, according to Brownlee’s Twitter account. He described landslips in the
area as “just horrendous”. BUSINESS China data point to steadier economy for now, but Trump victory adds to risks
BEIJING - China’s economy largely showed further signs of steadying in October as expected, but disappointing retail sales growth and fears of U.S. trade frictions under incoming President Donald Trump are increasingly clouding the outlook. Fixed-asset investment quickened slightly and beat expectations in January-October as the government stepped up infrastructure spending to support growth, official data showed on Monday.
But a number of other indicators released over the past week from exports to bank lending, as well as expectations of a slowdown in the heated property market, suggest economic momentum may falter in the months ahead. “On balance, today’s data suggest that the recent recovery in economic activity continued into the fourth quarter,” Capital Economics said in a note. “We expect growth to hold up well for another quarter or two. However, with credit growth now slowing and the property market beginning to cool the drivers of the recent recovery look set to fizzle out early next year.” China’s leaders have depended on a surging real estate market and government infrastructure spending to drive activity this year and look set to meet their growth target of 6.5 to 7 percent. The construction boom in turn has helped perk up the ailing industrial sector, spurring demand for cement to steel. But top policymakers and investors are also clearly growing more concerned about the risks of prolonged debt-fueled stimulus. China’s overall debt has jumped to more than 250 percent of GDP from 150 percent at the end of 2006, the kind of surge that in other countries has resulted in a financial bust or sharp economic slowdown, analysts say. “I believe the overall policy tone has turned to risk management as the authorities are concerned about asset bubbles,” said Singapore-based economist Zhou Hao at Commerzbank, predicting that the government will throttle back its aggressive stimulus before the end of the year. INVESTMENT STILL HEAVILY RELIANT ON GOVERNMENT Fixed-asset investment expanded 8.3 percent in the first 10 months from a year earlier, slightly ahead of market expectations and supported largely by government spending. Indonesian police arrest five after church attack
JAKARTA - Indonesian police on Monday arrested five people in connection with a suspected militant attack on a church that killed one infant and injured three. Police said they were investigating possible links to the Islamic State extremist group. Sunday’s attack in the parking lot of a church in East Kalimantan province on the island of Borneo was the latest in a series that has raised concerns over rising militancy in the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation. An Islamic State-linked assault in the capital Jakarta in January killed four people. Police said the attacker had been imprisoned on terrorism charges in the past and had links to existing radical networks. Indonesian police said Monday that one of four young children injured by an Islamic militant’s attack at a church on the island of Borneo has died. Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation, is often held up as practicing a moderate form of Islam. Previously, a number of road sections in Penebel were eroded by avalanche, but on Saturday (Nov. 12) was the turn for piles of rubbish at Perean village market, Baturiti subdistrict, avalanched to hamper the road access leading to five hamlets, namely the Berteh, Lebe, Piun, Basang Be and Ayar. From the information gathered, the rubbish avalanche disaster occurred around 21:00. To open the road access buried under the piles of rubbish, the officers of the
regional disaster mitigation agency (BPBD) Tabanan did evacuation on Sunday (Nov. 13). “From the morning, our officers already evacuated, so that the road
could soon be passed through. Since it happened at night, we can just address it this morning,” said the Head of the BPBD Tabanan, I Gusti Ngurah Made Sucita. Moreover, the agency also mobilized an excavator leased by local headman. Within just three hours, the evacuation of two and a half meter of rubbish piles behind the Perean Tengah market was completely done. “It only takes three hours and the traffic is back to normal,” he added. On Friday, he warned that he may use his executive power to tackle lawlessness in the Philippines by suspending habeas corpus, a legal safeguard against arbitrary arrest and detention. The constitution allows 60-day suspensions “in case of invasion or rebellion, when the public safety requires it” and would permit arrests without warrant and detention without charge for three days. LONDON - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange faced questioning on Monday by prosecutors at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he has been holed up for four years, over allegations he committed rape in 2010. Swedish Chief Prosecutor Ingrid Isgren arrived at the embassy to pose questions to Assange through an Ecuadorian prosecutor over the allegations which Assange has denied, a Reuters photographer at the scene said. Assange, who enraged the United States by publishing hundreds of thousands of secret U.S. diplomatic cables, took refuge in the embassy in August 2012 to avoid being extradited to Sweden over the rape allegation. Moroccan vault protects seeds from climate change and war
RABAT — Should a doomsday agricultural crisis hit the world’s driest environments, scientists and farmers will turn to an up-and-coming research center and seed bank in Morocco to restock their harvests. Tucked away in the university hub of Irfane in Rabat, the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas, or ICARDA, hosts the largest collection of seeds in North Africa. “If for any reason, a particular community lost all their resources, we are capable of providing them with the seeds for restoration and rehabilitation,” says Ahmed Amri, head of ICARDA’s Genetic Resources Unit. The crucial role of seed banks in protecting biodiversity is receiving increasing attention because of climate change, which threatens to wipe out crops as dry areas of the world get even hotter and drier. The impact on African agriculture is among the topics being discussed at U.N. climate talks taking place through next week in Morocco. The site in Rabat has become ICARDA’s primary center of storage and research after its previous hub in Aleppo, Syria, was seized by an Islamist rebel group in September 2015. “We couldn’t continue doing this work because of the situation in Syria, so we decided to make arrangements to move elsewhere to continue our work,” says
Amri, who used to work in Aleppo, but is now leading genetic research efforts in Rabat. While many of the research activities moved to Rabat, 98 percent of the Aleppo center’s seeds were safely transferred to ICARDA’s center in neighboring Lebanon. Duplicates were also sent to a “doomsday” seed vault in Svalbard in the Norwegian Arctic, which serves as a backup for other seed banks worldwide. Rebels from the ultraconservative Ahrar al-Sham group have occupied the Aleppo center since September 2015, cutting off access to its 75 employees. Amri has daily contact with the five staff members who remain in Aleppo, including associate scientist Ali Shehadeh. “With the cease-fire, it’s stable and unstable at times,” Shehadeh told The Associated Press from Aleppo in a Skype interview facilitated by Amri. of thousands of seeds spanning from wheat and barley to lentils and chickpeas inside a vault in near-freezing temperatures. The seed bank not only preserves these essential staples but develops them to become more resistant to disease and a warming climate. Last year, Morocco faced an unprecedented drought that scientists and the government and have linked to climate change, with drier and warmer winters in Morocco and neighboring countries. Domestic grain production dropped, forcing the government to drop tariffs on imports to avoid shortages and stem rising prices. Last month, the government decided to temporarily remove import duties for lentils to lower the price just in time for the winter season — a time when lentils are widely consumed in Morocco. Scientists at the Rabat center work closely with farmers in Marchouch, a nearby rural town. The scientists provide seed samples to farmers who allocate about 2 percent of their own farm land to test the seeds and provide feedback to scientists. “We are looking for science-based solutions for farmers’ problems,” says Shiv Kumar Agrawal, a lentil breeder with ICARDA. These problems include contending with droughts, invasive insects and increasing production. Farmers report back to scientists on the results of the harvest yielded from the seed samples, after which further tests are conducted to improve the seeds’ durability and production yield. Farmer Abdellah Slimani, 48, president of a farmers’ cooperative in Marchouch, believes the feedback loop has helped him and fellow farmers to improve their own methods as climate change continues to impact harvests. “We hope that this year’s harvest will be better, God willing,” Slimani says. Bruce Campbell of the Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centers says the climate conference in Marrakech offers a unique opportunity to address the impact of climate change on African agriculture. “Considering all African countries have included agriculture in their climate adaption strategies, (the conference) will be the ideal setting to discuss how the most promising solutions can be deployed and indeed, funded,” he says. ‘Mud Dragon’ fossil shows dinosaurs thrived on eve of destruction
WASHINGTON- In a humid, tropical jungle in southern China eons ago, a remarkably bird-like dinosaur with wing-like arms, a toothless beak and a dome-shaped crest atop its head became trapped in mud, struggled in vain to escape and died. Workmen blasting bedrock while building a school near the city of Ganzhou unearthed a beautifully preserved fossil of the roughly 6.5foot-long (2-meter-long) dinosaur, nicknamed the “Mud Dragon,” still in that contorted position, scientists said on Thursday. The Cretaceous Period creature, called Tongtianlong limosus, lived 66 to 72 million years ago, at the twilight of the dinosaurs’ more than 160-million-year reign on Earth. It was a member of a group called oviraptorosaurs, one of the closest relatives to birds, which evolved earlier from small, feathered dinosaurs. Paleontologist Steve Brusatte of Scotland’s University of Edinburgh, who worked on the study published in the journal Scientific Reports, said the fossil adds to the understanding of dinosaur evolution on the eve of destruction. The discovery of Tongtianlong and five other oviraptorosaur species in southern China showed this group was still blossoming and diversifying during the last few mil-
lion years before an asteroid struck Earth about 66 million years ago, wiping out the dinosaurs, Brusatte said. “The fact there were so many of them is a testament to just how well the dinosaurs were doing right up until the end,” Brusatte added. The fossil preserved a tragic moment for posterity. “Its neck is arched, its head sticking up, its arms out-stretched to the sides. It is a strange posture,” Brusatte said. The fact that the fossil was found in rock formed from mud and the skeleton is in pristine condition suggests the dinosaur got mired in mud, tried to get free, but died and was buried, Brusatte said. Its scientific name means “muddy dragon on the road to heaven,” paying homage to how it perished. Other previous dramatic fossil finds include Mongolia’s famous “fighting dinosaurs,” a Velociraptor and Protoceratops apparently locked in mortal combat when a sand dune collapsed on them. Tongtianlong was a two-legged omnivore, with a bony crest on its short, squat skull that was probably used for display purposes to attract mates and intimidate rivals. Its arms likely had quill-like feathers layered over each other like on a wing, though it could not fly. (rtr)

The Head of the Bangli Cooperatives and the SMEs Agency, I Dewa Gede Suparta, said the national economic slump has quite significant impact on the SME sector in Bangli. Fulfillment of demand for products is no longer as ever before causing to be overwhelmed. “Since about three months, the product sales are quite sluggish. It slumps about 30 percent from the previous one,” he explained, Sunday (Nov. 13). Based on latest data, the number of SMEs in Bangli reaches approximately 42,000 units consisting of trade, agriculture, non-agriculture and services. The economy downturn is claimed not to have resulted in the
business to go bankrupt. “So far, businesses still survive,” he said. To generate sales, he admitted to intensify coaching. Aside from marketing, he also improved product quality. Five decades and 200 films later, Jackie Chan ‘finally’ wins Oscar
LOS ANGELES - When Jackie Chan saw an Oscar at Sylvester Stallone’s house 23 years ago, he said that was the moment he decided he wanted one. On Saturday at the annual Governors Awards, the Chinese actor and martial arts star finally received his little gold statuette, an honorary Oscar for his decades of work in film. “After 56 years in the film industry, making more than 200 films, after so many bones, finally,” Chan, 62, quipped at the star-studded gala dinner while holding his Oscar. The actor recalled watching the ceremony with his parents and his father always asking him why he didn’t have Hollywood’s top acco-
lade despite having made so many movies. He praised his hometown Hong Kong for making him “proud to be Chinese,” and thanked his fans, saying they were the reason “I continue to make movies, jumping through windows, kicking and punching, breaking my bones.” The actor was introduced by his “Rush Hour” co-star Chris Tucker, actress Michelle Yeoh and Tom Hanks, who referred to him as “Jackie ‘Chantastic’ Chan.”
Hanks said it was especially gratifying to be able to acknowledge Chan’s work because martial arts and action comedy films were two genres often overlooked during awards season. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, hosts of the annual ceremony, also bestowed honorary Oscars on British film editor Anne V. Coates, casting director Lynn Stalmaster and prolific documentarian Frederick Wiseman. The evening was attended by Hollywood’s elite, including Denzel Washington, Lupita Nyong’o, Nicole Kidman, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Amy Adams and Dev Patel. (rtr)

Sweltering 2016 to set heat record, stoked by man-made warming - WMO
MARRAKESH - The world is set to notch up a new heat record in 2016 after a sizzling 2015 as global warming stokes more floods and rising sea levels, the U.N. weather agency said on Monday at climate change talks overshadowed by Donald Trump’s election win. President-elect Trump has called climate change a hoax and a source in his transition team says he is seeking
quick ways to pull the United States out of the 2015 Paris Agreement, which aims to shift the world econ-
omy away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said this year would be the warmest since records began in the late 19th century, with average surface temperatures 1.2 degrees Celsius (2.2 Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial times. Sixteen of the 17 hottest years recorded have been in this century. “Another year. Another record,” WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said in a statement in Marrakesh, Morocco, where almost 200 nations are discussing ways to slow climate change. The heat, with impacts such as melting Greenland ice and damage to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, was stoked by an El Nino weather event in the Pacific early in the year and by man-made greenhouse gases, mainly from burning fossil fuels. “The extra heat from the powerful El Nino event has disappeared. The heat from global warming will continue,” he said. The WMO said it was “very likely” that 2016 would be the hottest, barring a freak chill in coming weeks.
PARIS DEAL The Paris deal, backed by almost 200 nations including the United States but rejected by Trump, has an overriding goal of limiting the rise in temperatures to “well below” 2C (3.6F) above pre-industrial times, ideally 1.5C (2.7F).
