It was the most ambitious operation yet in an effort to increase security before Rio hosts the final matches of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics. Officials are counting on those events to signal Brazil’s arrival as a global economic, political and cultural power. “We’re taking back this territory for the 100,000 citizens of Rocinha, people who have needed peace,” said Sergio Cabral, governor of Rio de Janeiro state. The action in Rocinha is part of a campaign to drive the drug gangs out of the city’s slums, where the traffickers often rule unchallenged. The city of Rio de Janeiro has more than 1,000 shantytowns where about one-third of its 6 million people live. Authorities said it took just 90 minutes to seize control of Rocinha. Police simultaneously overran the
neighboring Vidigal slum, also previously dominated by the drug gang Friends of Friends. Both slums sit between two of Rio’s richest neighborhoods, and Rocinha’s ramshackle shacks climb a mountainside covered in Atlantic rain forest. Police methodically cleared alleys and streets on their way up steep, winding roads. Huey helicopters continued to pound the air above, crisscrossing the hill and flying low over the jungle surrounding the slum, as police hunted down suspects who may have fled into the forest. By midday, local outlets reported just one arrest, though that couldn’t be independently confirmed. Residents peeked out their windows and stared as the massive armored carriers blasted up streets. Rifle-toting officers from the BOPE police units, made famous by two “Elite Squad” films, trained their weapons down narrow corridors. Down a side alleyway, police discovered a house they said belonged to the No. 2 gang leader, Sandro Luiz de Paula Amorim, known as “Peixe,” who was captured by police a few days earlier as they circled Rocinha with roadblocks.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

YANGON - At least 10 people were killed and 27 wounded from a bomb blast in the capital of Myanmar’s northern Kachin State bordering China, local sources said on Monday. The blast took place late evening Sunday in the city of Myitkyinar and caused a blaze at three houses. Those killed included nine orphaned students and a child, local residents told Reuters. “A study group was taking place at the time of the bombing, that was why the number of casualties was high,� a resident told Reuters, requesting anonymity. It was not immediately known why the orphan homes were targeted, or who was behind the bombing. Monday’s official newspapers did not report the incident, but said a bomb went off and another was defused in Myitkyinar Saturday, and there were no injuries. Kachin state is one of Myanmar’s most dangerous regions, plagued by decades of conflict between ethnic separatists and government troops.

Survey: Indonesians killed 750 orangutans in year Associated Press
JAKARTA — Villagers living on the Indonesian side of Borneo killed at least 750 endangered orangutans over a yearlong period, some to protect crops from being raided and others for their meat, a new survey shows. Such practices, never before quantified, are now believed to pose a more serious threat to the existence of the red apes than previously thought, Erik Meijaard, the main author of the report that appeared in the journal PLoSOne, said Monday. Indonesia — home to 90 percent of the orangutans left in the wild — was blanketed with plush rain forests less than 50 years ago, but half those trees have since been cleared in the rush to supply the world with timber, pulp, paper and more recently, palm oil. As a result, most of the remaining 50,000 to 60,000 apes live in scattered, degraded forests, putting them in frequent, and often deadly, conflict with humans. “But our surveys also indicate that killing of orangutans is happening deep inside forested areas, where orangutans are hunted just like any other species,” Meijaard said. “This
may be an uncomfortable truth, but not one that we can any longer ignore.” The Nature Conservancy and 19 other private organizations, including the WWF and the Association of Indonesian Primate Experts and Observers, carried out the survey to get a better understanding of orangutan killings and their underlying causes. They interviewed 6,983 people in 687 villages in three provinces of Kalimantan — the Indonesian side of Borneo, which is shared also with Malaysia and Brunei — between April 2008 and September 2009. Figures from the interviews were extrapolated to the target population of men 15 years and older, since only 11 women reported killing orangutans. This indicated that at least 750 apes had been killed during the previous year. Neil Makinuddin, program manager of The Nature Conservancy, said they were surprised how many respondents reported killing and then eating orangutans — just over half. Some were consumed after being killed for entering crops or because people were afraid of the animals, the study showed. Others were hunted outright for their meat.
The authors were quick to stress, however, that the people who admitted to killing orangutans said they’d only done so once or twice over the course of their lives. “Orangutans are not part of people’s day-to-day diet,” said Meijaard, a senior adviser for the People and Nature Consulting International. Indonesian Forestry Ministry spokesman Ahmad Fauzi Masyhud said his office has not yet received the report, which he described as “bombastic.” “We have to recheck whether it is true or not,” he said. “But frankly I doubt it.” But Meijaard said it’s time to face up to the facts. “We used robust scientific methods to assess the social dimensions of orangutan conservation,” he said. “Unless we assume that most of the survey respondents lied, we have to accept the hunting issue as an uncomfortable truth that needs to be addressed if we want to save the orangutan.” He said he’s seen far too many orangutan skulls, skins and chopped off hands, and heard too many firsthand accounts of people having killed or eaten orangutans, to believe it isn’t happening.

JAKARTA — A strong earthquake hit waters off eastern Indonesia on Monday, sending people on nearby islands fleeing from their homes in panic. Fearing a tsunami that never came, villagers living along coastlines ran to high ground.
The 6.3-magnitude quake was centered 12 miles (20 kilometers) beneath the Molucca Sea, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Many people in Ternate, the town in North Maluku province that was closest to the epicenter, scurried from shaking buildings, said George Rajaloa,
a resident. “I ran with everyone else,” he said. Suhardjono, from the Indonesian meteorological and geophysics agency, said at that magnitude and depth there was no danger of tsunami. But residents fled beaches all the same.
Indonesia straddles a series of fault lines that make the vast island nation prone to volcanic and seismic activity. A giant quake off the country on Dec. 26, 2004, triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230,000 people, half of them in Indonesia’s westernmost province of Aceh.

This dance-drama, according to the mask artist of the Indonesia Arts Institute (ISI) Denpasar, Nyoman Catra, was always performed by a single dancer with a storyline. Due to such solo performance, it then raised so diverse interpretations on the definition of the mask. Some call the pajegan mask to originate from the Balinese word mamajeg or doing an entire job alone where an actor played the entire mask characters. Mean-
while, there was also another version calling it Pejagan mask which meant to keep up. The mask dance was held to look after’ in order along the implementation of yaj a children would not interfere with the high priest chairing the rituals. During the ritual process, the mask performance was used to make the implementation of yaj a run without any obstacles and the high priest was capable of performing the worship solemnly. However, the Pejagan was actually carried out by telling stories. In other words, during the performance of the mask dance, the artist attempted to interpret’ the meaning of rituals. By doing so, people could understand about the real meaning behind the implementation of the rituals. Within that conte t, the mask
performance played an important role in the process of transformation of religious value--a very urgent mission. On that account, the mask was often used as a medium to interpret the meaning of ritual and served as sermon’ since the past time. Catra also added that pajegan mask was identical to the procession of Sidakarya mask performance. In relation to this matter, at the end of the ritual procession was usually staged the Sidakarya mask. Performance of the pajegan mask staged a hard mask depicting an energetic young character. If analogized to the passage of time, he was the early morning with a bright light, while the old mask depicted a person who had been growing older whose energy was getting limited. Or it
described the passage of time that had been leaning toward the west or afternoon. In the meantime, at the end of the performance was presented the Sidakarya mask marked with the e pression of laugh and scary at the same time. This dualism of e pression could be interpreted as the journey to the ne t world where a person could go to heaven or hell. It was determined by karma vasana or traces of the deeds in previous lifetime. E pression of laughing described a good karma that led to heaven, while the creepy e pression described bad karma leading a person to hell. Sidakarya mask, according to Catra, could be interpreted as a depiction of life cycle, starting from old age, died and then took a form of a child again. On that account, staging of the mask was regularly accompanied with the pursuit of
small children. As consequence, it was often called the mask of pursuit. Having captured the children, they were given some amount of money. Not infrequently, it initially made children frightened, but they ZHUH ¿QDOO\ KDSS\ DIWHU EHLQJ JLYHQ a reward.’ Pajegan mask was generally performed in the Bhuta Yaj a and Pitri Yaj a. There were few pieces of masks staged in the performance of pajegan mask that should follow a fi ed sequence. Firstly, it was commenced with hard mask and then followed by old mask. In the second order, it was completed with description of drama of life. On that account, it was then consisting of chief minister (penasar), king (dalem) and royal servants (bondres). Balinese language poses a medium and spirit of Balinese culture. To preserve Balinese culture should also simultaneously maintain and use of Balinese language in daily life. In other words, speaking Balinese language also characterizes one of the identities as a Balinese. Among the use of other languages, Balinese language should remain to give a space to grow and develop. Other than speaking and teaching it at schools, it should also accommodate the need of modern community or use in wider functions of language. Balinese community receives abundant heritages of lontar or palm-leaf manuscripts from the predecessors retained by individuals and museums. They carry many aspects of knowledge, ranging from philosophy, local healing, literature, architecture, agriculture, herbal practice, astrology and so forth. Therefore, if they could be interpreted and presented in popular language, they could become attractive information for young generation
and saleable books for commercial needs. Today, there is also a trend of poising the tradition with modern science namely by re-interpreting the indigenous wisdoms that are relevant to the current time. People will get balanced inputs from the past and current orientation. Of course, such treasures will be beneficial for the conservation and future development of Balinese culture because it stays in touch with its original roots. Young generation should be introduced to these roots at early stage. Later, they will not lose their identity and even could feel proud of it. Moreover, it could give them inspiration in making their creativities, either in fine arts, performance, traditional architecture or herbal healings. Add star fruit leaves. Reduce heat and simmer for minutes. Drain leaves, and then cools to room temperatures in ice water. Drain and dry well. Place half of the spice paste into saucepan and saut for 2 minutes. Add coconut milk and salam leaf, reduce heat and simmer until sauce thickens. Season minced beef with the remaining spice paste. Place on banana leaf and roll up very tightly into the shape of a sausage. Steam for 1 minutes. Allow to cool, open banana leaf and break meat into its original minced consistency. HONOLULU - US President Barack Obama pressed China over its “economic practices,” warning that it has still not done enough to allow its currency to rise despite some “slight improvement.” “When it comes to their economic practices, there are a range of things that they have done that disadvantage not just the United States but a whole host of their trading partners and countries in the region,” Obama said on Sunday. Speaking at a press conference following a summit of Asia-Pacific leaders including Chinese President Hu Jintao in Hawaii, Obama said his chief problem with China was over its yuan currency. The United States and the European Union have long accused China of keeping its yuan artificially low, fueling a flow of cheap e ports that have turned the rising Asian power into the world’s manufacturing capital. “Most economists estimate that the RMB (renmimbi, also known as the yuan) is devalued by
20 to 2 percent,” Obama said. “That means our e ports to China are that much more e pensive and their imports into the United States are that much cheaper. “Now there has been slight improvement over the last year, partly because of US pressure, but it hasn’t been enough,” he said. “It’s time for them to go ahead and move towards a market-based system for their currency. LOS ANGELES - Veteran British rock band Black Sabbath announced on Friday they are reuniting in their original four man line-up for their first new album in 33 years and a 2012 world tour. Singer Ozzy Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi, bass player Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward told a news conference at legendary Sunset Strip club Whisky a Go Go they would perform at the Download Festival in England in June 2012, and then embark on a world tour. The band, which first got together under the Black Sabbath name in 1969, said they were working on new material for the album for release in the fall of 2012. There is no title as yet but it will be produced by Rick Rubin. “It’s now or never. We are getting along great. Everything’s really good,” Iommi told reporters at the club where Black Sabbath played their first show in Los Angeles exactly 41 years ago. “It’s like putting on an old glove. It’s fantastic,” Iommi added. The four musicians, now all in their 60s, released their last studio album of all original material in 1978 with “Never Say Never.” Rumors of a possible reunion of the English metal band, regarded as one of the pioneers of heavy metal with hits like “Iron Man” and “War Pigs,” had been swirling for months. “It’s just time,” Osbourne said, noting that the four had tried in the past to work together again. “This
time, for some magical reason, we have written about seven or eight songs.” Nothing has been recorded yet and no dates were announced on Friday for the world tour. MOSCOW — A Russian spacecraft carrying an American and two Russians blasted off Monday from the snow-covered Kazakh steppes in a faultless launch that eased anxiety about the future of U.S. and Russian space programs. The Soyuz TMA-22 lifted off as scheduled at 8:14 a.m. (0414 GMT) from the Russian-leased Baikonur cosmodrome to carry NASA astronaut Dan Burbank and Russians Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin on a mission to the International Space Station. The launch had been delayed for two months due to the crash of an unmannned Progress cargo ship in August. The failed launch raised doubts about future missions to the station, because the rocket that crashed used the same upper stage as the booster rockets carrying Soyuz ships to orbit. NASA had warned that the space
outpost would need to be abandoned temporarily for the first time in nearly 11 years if a new crew could not be launched before the last of the station’s six residents flew back to Earth in mid-November. Russian space officials tracked down the Progress launch failure to an “accidental” manufacturing flaw and recalled all Soyuz rockets
from space launch pads for a thorough examination. The successful launch of a Progress ship last month cleared the way for the crew to be sent off. The crew said they trusted the Soyuz, a workhorse of the Soviet and then Russian space program for more than 40 years. “We have no black thoughts and full confidence in our technology,” Shkaplerov told journalists before the launch. The new crew are to arrive just in time to keep the orbiting station manned. The three crew members currently on board the station are set to return to Earth on Nov. 21. Another launch next month is to take the station back to its normal six-person crew mode.
Belgium denied reports Saturday of a massive increase in tobacco sales due to the lure of the country’s cheap cigarettes and tobacco for discount-seeking smokers from Britain and France. The finance ministry denied a cover story by the daily Le Soir and radio reports that said cigarette sales leapt 19 percent in the first nine months of the year. Citing exclusive data from the finance ministry, Le Soir said sales of roll-your-own tobacco increased 25 percent. It also reported booming business in filling stations near the Franco-Belgian border, where some owners were quoted saying tobacco sales were outpacing sales of petrol. But Claude Monseu, an advisor to Finance Minister Didier Reynders, later told the Belga news agency that sales were expected to show a 12-month fall and that the discrepancy between the paper’s report and the ministry’s data resulted from a change in the way tobacco products were taxed and the timing. Health experts had complained in the daily that Belgium’s cheap tobacco goods fanned cancer. While a smoking ban in public spaces was widened in July to cover all cafes, the price of cigarettes remains relatively low in comparison with some countries in Europe. Le Soir said that in 2002, a pack of 20 cigarettes was 0.50 euros cheaper in Belgium than France, but the current difference was 1.20 euros. It said a pack that cost eight euros in Britain cost 5.05 euros in Belgium.

McLaren tips Hamilton to VWHS XS DQRWKHU JHDU LEWIS Hamilton will use his victory in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as a springboard to lift himself to another level of driving, as he moves away from the troubles that have dogged him over the past few months. That is the view of his McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh, who reckons that Hamilton’s triumph at the Yas Marina circuit showed that the former world champion was now back to his best. “There is no reason why, in my mind, he cannot raise himself to another level now,” explained Whitmarsh. “I think this was a great recovery from where he has been in the last few months, and he can do greater things even than this. “I think he is pretty happy with this one. You can see that in him and that enables people to drive with greater confidence and to attack that little bit extra. We are looking forward now to getting to Brazil and having another race, which is good.” Hamilton has endured widely-reported difficulties in his private life recently, and said ahead of the Abu Dhabi weekend that he felt it important to surround himself in a ‘happy bubble’ of friends and family next year to get himself fully focused on the job he
needs to do. The honesty about his difficulties offered a glimpse about the progress he has made in addressing the issues that he has faced, and Whitmarsh thinks that being able to deliver a win right now was vital to help Hamilton speed that process along. “I think it was an important win, but they are all important,” he explained. “I think he has been strong all weekend, strong through practice, and he came here with a good frame of mind and focused. “It didn’t quite work out in qualifying, as we thought we should have been on pole and we weren’t, but the outcome we have had was great. The problem in India forced him to change the wing during the race, while in Abu Dhabi he had to revert to an older specification because the team did not want to risk any further problems. Domenicali says Ferrari still does not have an answer for what is happening but believes the fact Red Bull Racing encountered a similar problem in Abu Dhabi shows that the issue is not unique to his team. “First of all it was pretty clear that [in India] it was a problem with the assembly of the wing,” he said. “We thought we had understood the issues already in the last race, and if you see the behaviour of the wing of Red Bull, it was exactly the same situation. “With the DRS zone on the long straight, there are a lot of facts to consider: tyre pressure, linearity of asphalt, and set-up conditions. So a lot of things that have an effect on that. “The reason we had to go back on the wing was, because of this problem, we had [only] a few parts and we cannot run a risk of having a problem. So I think we took the right decision on that, and we need to fix it for sure.”
