NEW YORK — Katie Holmes will once again play Jackie Kennedy Onassis in a TV miniseries. The actress has signed on to star in “The Kennedys-After Camelot,” a follow-up to “The Kennedys” miniseries for ReelzChannel. It’s based on a book by Randy Taraborrelli. The four-hour miniseries will begin production next year and is slated to air in 2016. Thirty-five-year-old Holmes will executive produce and also direct one episode. John Cassar, who directed “The Kennedys,” will direct the other three episodes. “The Kennedys” was originally made to air on History, but was dropped because the network said it
didn’t fit its brand. The miniseries was later picked up by ReelzChannel and scored record ratings for the network when it aired in 2011. It starred Greg Kinnear as John F. Kennedy and Holmes as the first lady. Kinnear was nominated for an Emmy and SAG Award for his portrayal. Barry Pepper, who played Bobby Kennedy, won the Emmy Award for outstanding lead actor in a miniseries or movie.

NEW YORK - Hip-hop newcomer Iggy Azalea dominated the shortlist for the American Music Awards with nods in six categories just months after her debut album. The Australian-born singer was nominated for artist of the year as well as song of the year with “Fancy,” which has become a radio favorite through its simple bass line and anthem-like chorus about indulgence sung by Charli XCX. Azalea, whose first studio album “The New Classic” was released in April, received more nominations than any other artist, even though it was the first year she made the list. Pharrell Williams also was in contention for both artist of the year and top single with his global blockbuster song “Happy.” Other artists named for artist of the year were Beyonce, Luke Bryan, Eminem, Imagine Dragons, John Legend, Lorde, One Direction and Katy Perry. The American Music Awards, set up in 1973 by late radio and television personality Dick Clark, recognize commercial success and public appeal with fans voting for their choices. The set-up contrasts with the older Grammy Awards, in which recording industry professionals select what they view as the top artists and works. The American Music Awards winners will be announced at a ceremony on November 23 in Los Angeles.

SEMARAPURA - Having been excessively exploited, the productivity of the swallow nest in Batu Melawang Cave, Ceningan hamlet, Lembongan village, Nusa Penida subdistrict, drastically slumped. Such condition draws the concern about the condition of the cave. On that account, the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) of Bali was asked to issued a recommendation on the real condition of the cave and swallow nest at this time. Thus, the management will not ignore the element of preservation. It was stated by Managing Director of the PDNKK Klungkung, Wayan Sukadana, after a work meeting with the legislative. Other than paying attention to the management, he asserted, the Batu Melawang Cave as natural resources should also be conserved. “Recommendation of the BKSDA Bali is highly required. To make clear, it must make an assessment whether the cliff cave on Ceningan Island is still worth exploiting or not. After exploited massively, we must also think about the conservation efforts,” he said. He admitted to disagree to the assumption if the Batu Melawang Cave became the biggest source of revenue in
the business unit owned by the PNDKK. Even, his party got impression that the previous management handled by the second party, willing to pay at IDR 400 million per year to the PDNKK few years ago, remained to have the assumption if the PDNKK could still increase the revenues by boosting bird’s nest management at Batu Melawang Cave. Sukadana asserted his party wanted to know the current condition of the cave through the data- and fact-based research conducted by the BKSDA Bali. Previously, the last harvest indicated a remarkably declining yield. As a result, an option arose to do preservation first for several years before undertaking further manage-
ment. The BKSDA Bali had checked the condition of the Batu Melawang Cave earlier this year. It was carried out with representatives of the Cooperatives, SMEs, Industry and Trade Agency I Gusti Nyoman Ariawan, then I Wayan Dwipa from the Regional Development Planning Board, Gusti Putu Warna from the BKSDA Bali and Wayan Sukadana as CEO of the PDNKK Klungkung. At that time, the harvest could only produce 235 pieces of bird’s nest. Actually, seeing from the data since the beginning of the harvest made in1991 to 2000, in a single harvest the bird’s nest could produce 4,000 pieces. Unfortunately, after that time, the BKSDA Bali had not issued any recommendation. It could be cross-checked related to the request of the PDNKK. Meanwhile, Wayan Sukadana said the decline in the nest production by swallow population could happen due to poor management by the previous overexploitation. “The exploitation paying no attention to regeneration or sustainability has caused the bird population to reduce drastically,” he said. Bali News AMLAPURA - Evidently the Nawa Kerti village, Abang, Karangasem has the potential for poultry farm development. However, the development of this potential by the quite cool village wis still constrained by the water crisis there. This fact was mentioned by one of the local laying hen breeders, I Wayan Wartawan Sengod, Monday (Oct 13) in Karangasem. He said that his village was cooler than Seraya village or other villages which have been the center of broiler or layer hen breeding. However, until now, livestock development still faces the challenge of the clean water crisis as well as the lack of paving on the ring road leading to the village.. He said that he had learned to breed laying hens a few years ago. Currently he has 2,000 heads of laying hens. He wants to increase this by 1,000 heads. Unfortunately, the water crisis remains an obstacle. “In 2015, I aspire to have 5,000 chickens. Once I reache 5,000 heads, I will breathe easy, because I will be able to turn a profit” he said. According to this breeder, there is already a water pipeline connection to his village. But so far the water had not run. He has therefore been forced to buy clean water from tank trucks. With a total of 2,000
chickens, a tank of water only suffices for four days. The price of water per tank for business purposes sold by subdistrict tank truck is IDR 100,000 in the village, while for public service it only costs IDR 60,000 per tank. With the purchase of water from tank truck, he spends at least IDR 800,000 a month. “This is very expensive for a laying hen business,” he said. According to him, if the Municipal Waterworks (PDAM) provides a connection, it would greatly diminish costs. Actually, he said that if the water company of Karangasem wanted to provide a water connection to Nawa Kerti, it showed great potential for profits as well. Approximately 60 percent of the residents of the village consisting of more than 1,000 families would subscribe to the water service. Presently, local residents face s water crisis every dry season. On the other hand, the acting headman of Nawa Kerti, I Nyoman Karta Rieg, admitted that his residents indeed faced a clean water crisis. For the past few months his residents have being queueing up to request clean water provided by the subdistrict tank truck. “Each day the tank truck makes eight or ten trips, while the queue for clean water involves 200 to 300 families. When this service is delayed, people obviously complain,” he said. (013)

While absorbed in snorkeling on Jemeluk Beach, Purwakerti village, Abang, Nyoman Daniel Ari Setiawan, 21, a resident of Buduk housing estate, Denpasar, lost his luggage stored inside an APV vehicle with license plate DK 1866 FH. As a result of the theft, the victim suffered a material loss worth IDR 47 million. The incident began when Nyoman Daniel and his friends were snorkeling on Jemeluk Beach, Sunday (Oct 12) at approximately 2:30 in the afternoon. Before snorkeling, the victim and his friend put their luggage inside the car. It consisted of a number of bags containing mobile phones and a DSLR camera. At approximately 4:30 that
afternoon, the victim and his friends returned to the vehicle to pick up their clothes. However, when getting into the car the victim did not find the items he had previously placed there. All the items had vanished. The victim of this theft, suffered material losses valued at IDR 47 million. The incident was immediately reported to the Abang Police. According to the investigation of Abang Police officers, it was known the thieving culprit could easily take the victim’s luggage because it was stored inside the unattended vehicle. The case was reported to the police post, on Monday (Oct 13). The case is currently being handled by the Abang Police. (dwa)

The prestigious Nusa Dua Fiesta (NDF) was enlivened by various interesting activities drawing the attention of visitors. For instance, there were 28 local and international artists and models who voluntarily participated in the body painting event that also jazzed up the inauguration of the seventeenth annual Nusa Dua Fiesta, Monday (Oct 13). Body painting has its own charm, which is sometimes underestimated. As a matter of fact, the art of painting with the medium of human body has its own difficulties compared to the use of painting media such as canvas. Chairman of the Nusa Dua Fiesta 2014 Organizing Committee, Ida Bagus Abdhi, explained that the body painting for this year was adjusted to the NDF theme namely Love, Peace and Harmony that would be painted by local artists. “Hopefully, all the artists getting involved could express their artistic capability on the models’ body according to this theme,” he said. Later, he added, that the jury would select three of the models and artists. “Criteria for the assessment related to our theme namely Love, Peace and Harmony,
the quality of the art and aesthetic of the painting results that may not contain any elements of pornography at all,” he said. Meanwhile, Jango Paramartha, a local artist, on that occasion said that the body painting contained a touch of contemporary art. “What we are doing is far from pornography because it is an improvisation originally expressed on canvas as the medium. Then, it is replaced with one’s body,” he said. According to him, the art of body painting could only be produced in Indonesia if did not go up against the laws on pornography. In Bali, the art of body painting demonstrated that the artists were given the freedom to express their own creativity. Dewa Jodi who had already par-
ticipated in the body painting event of the Nusa Dua Fiesta claimed that this art form has its own intrinsic challenges.. Other than the difficulty of making the paint stick to the skin when painting the clothes worn by the model, the paint also quickly gets absorbed so that a lot of paint is required for the colors to remain bright. “It is also difficult, sir, compared to painting on canvas because the paint cannot have texture onthe skin. Much paint is required especially when painting on T-shirts which absorbes so much moisture” said Jodi. Meanwhile, Vinka who twice acted as a model, claimed that being a model in the body painting event was quite tiresome. “It’s tiring to stand for so long and sometimes the paintbrush is ticklish.” she said. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Voiceprints being harvested by the millions

LONDON — Over the telephone, in jail and online, a new digital bounty is being harvested: the human voice. Businesses and governments around the world increasingly are turning to voice biometrics, or voiceprints, to pay pensions, collect taxes, track criminals and replace passwords. “We sometimes call it the invisible biometric,” said Mike Goldgof, an executive at Madrid-based AGNITiO, one of about 10 leading companies in the field. Those companies have helped enter more than 65 million voiceprints into corporate and government databases, according to Associated Press

Dan Miller, an analyst with Opus Research in San Francisco, estimates that the industry’s revenue will roughly double from just under $400 million last year to between $730 mil-
lion and $900 million next year. Barclays PLC recently experimented with voiceprinting as an identification for its wealthiest clients. It was so successful that Barclays is rolling it out to the rest of its 12 million retail banking customers. “The general feeling is that voice biometrics will be the de facto standard in the next two or three years,” said Iain Hanlon, a Barclays executive. Their technology measures the characteristics of a person’s speech as air is expelled from the lungs, across the vocal folds of the larynx, up the pharynx, over the tongue, and out through the lips, nose, and teeth. Typical speaker recognition software compares those characteristics with data held on a server. If two voiceprints are similar enough, the system declares them a match. The Vanguard Group Inc., a Pennsylvania-based mutual fund manager, is among the technology’s many financial users. Tens of thousands of customers log in to their accounts by speaking the phrase: “At Vanguard, my voice is my password” into the phone. The single largest implementation identified by the AP is in Turkey, where mobile phone company Turkcell has taken the voice biometric data of some 10 million customers using technology provided by market leader Nuance Communications Inc. But government agencies are catching up. In the U.S., law enforcement officials use the technology to monitor inmates and track offenders who have been paroled. In New Zealand, the Internal Revenue Department celebrated its 1 millionth voiceprint, leading the revenue minister to boast that his country had “the highest level of voice biometric enrollments per capita in the world.” In South Africa, roughly 7 million voiceprints have been collected by the country’s Social Security Agency, in part to verify that those claiming pensions are still alive. Activists worry that the popularity of voiceprinting has a downside. “It’s more mass surveillance,” said Sadhbh McCarthy, an Irish privacy researcher. “The next thing you know, that will be given to border guards, and you’ll need to speak into a microphone when you get back from vacation.”

SAN FRANCISCO - Hackers are shaking off their reputations as nerdy, loner basement dwellers and rebranding themselves on the world stage as members of Internet age tribes with offbeat codes of conduct and capricious goals. Clans of hackers such as Anonymous, LulzSec and Lizard Squad have caused havoc -- and made news -- in recent years, but the legacy of the online community stretches back decades. “People think of hackers as nonsocial people who live in the basement; that is not true at all,” said Nico Sell, chief executive of the encrypted messaging service Wickr
and the longtime organizer of the DEF CON hacking conference. “To be good at hacking, you have to understand how society and people work. These geeks are not your normal geeks.” Rebels united by their hacking prowess and identified by sassy pseudonyms have been divided into “white hat” groups that use software skills for good and their “black hat” rivals intent on anything from pranks and political upheaval to espionage or crimes of profit. Hackers share their stories and skills at forums like DEF CON and in Internet chat venues such an privacy-guarding 4Chan, according to Gabriella Coleman, who holds the Wolfe Chair in Scientific and
Technological Literacy at McGill University in Canada. “There are many reasons one can call hackers a community,” said Coleman, whose book “Hacker, Hoaxer, Whistleblower, Spy: The Many Faces of Anonymous” will be released in November. “One layer is just their craft: they are building stuff or breaking stuff. The technology is so complex you rely on the help of others to get things done in a serious way,” she told AFP. Next year will mark the 23rd annual DEF CON gathering in Las Vegas. Ritualized ways of displaying humility in hacker tribes include leaving it to others to brand one a hacker -- never taking the name for oneself. There is a high value placed on weirdness.

The stone crafts have contributed 2.30 percent of the Bali’s export total that reaches to US$300.95. This number increased 4.16 percent compared to that of the last year, amounted to US$288.93 million. The stone crafting is mostly created by people from Silakarang Village, Ubud Sub District, and Batubulan, Gianyar District. It is one of Balinese heritages, which has been inherited from generation to generation.

TABANAN - To achieve a cervical cancer-free Bali, the government of Tabanan continues to encourage women to have early cervical cancer screening through Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA). Such examinations, aimed at determining abnormalities in the cervical epithelia were held at the SOS Desa Taruna Bantas, East Selemadeg, Monday (Oct 13). Of the 200 patients involved in the exams, only 179 women qualified for the IVA examination. As a result, of the 179 patients, 4 patients were tested positive to pre-cancerous lesions. Chief of East Selemadeg Public Health Center I, Ni Wayan Adnyani, explained that pre-cancerous lesions meant that the HPV virus, causing cervical cancer and abnormalities in the epithelial cells of the cervix, had been found.
The abnormalities, had not reached the stage of cancer. However, if the disorder had not been detected so early and had been left untreated, it would surely become cancerous. “If it is left untreated, in the span of 5-10 years, the pre-cancerous lesions will become cancerous,” said Adnyani. The four patients showing pre-cancerous lesions, added Adnyani, were immediately given a cryo treatment to make the HPV virus and cell disorders drop and release. The patients were told to make regular checkups once a week and advised to undergo another IVA examination after six months. “For the time being there are no patients with signs leading to cancer nor have any been referred to hospital. Those with detected lesions just need to control once a week to see the progress,” said Adnyani.
Based on experience, when the pre-cancerous lesions had been detected, the cryo treatment was very an effective measure to prevent the cellular development into cervical cancer. This treatment is less expensive and easier than if pre-cancerous lesions were neglected and develop into cancer. The treatment would become more difficult and the cost become larger if left untreated. On that account, early detection is very important particularly by married women and those under 50 years old. In addition to the IVA inspection, the free treatment was also accompanied with the provision of general treatments, eye examinations as well as the distribution of free spectacles and briefing about the hazards of cervical cancer and the importance of early detection. These complaints arose because of two units of coops which accommodate thousands of chickens and spread a wretched stench and invasion of flies. People expressed discomfortable with the emergence of the swarms of flies around their homes. Due to this disturbance, the residents sent a letter to the regent No.02 /TWS/X/2014 concerning the fly invasion. The people hoped that the regent could review the permit issued to the chicken farm business due to the inconvenient impact perceived by local residents. The Wana Sari subgroup head, I Komang Suartika, feels that the complaint by residents related to the flies and the stench exuded by the chicken coops is justified. They hoped this coop business could be discontinued. Otherwise, people are worried about the disease this livestock pollution will cause. After getting a copy of the letter, the Jembrana Municipal Police immediately came down to the location to check on the chicken coop, Monday (Oct 13). The Municipal Police Peace and Order Section Head, I Gede Suda Asmara, said that from the site inspection it was found that the two chicken coops were owned by two different people. The first coop was owned by I Nengah Suarmawan, while the second by I Putu Antara. Both coops could accommodate 4,500 chickens and 12,000 chickens respectively. Pursuant to Regional Bylaw No.27/2001 on Livestock Business Permit Levy, the business owner should have a certificate of ‘personal farm business’. while, the farm owner having over 15,000 heads of chicken should have a permit for ‘livestock business’. From the informal investigation it was found that, the two farm businesses had in fact not submitted the ‘certificate of smallholding farm’. Thus, his party asked the two chicken coop owners to come to the municipal police office to make a statement. Now, a new, albeit smaller, mystery has emerged: Why the cane? Kim, who was last seen publicly at a Sept. 3 concert, appeared in images released by state media Tuesday smiling broadly and supporting himself with a walking stick while touring the newly built Wisong Scientists Residential District and another new institute in Pyongyang, part of his regular “field guidance” tours. The North didn’t say when the visit happened, nor did it address the leader’s health. Kim’s appearance allowed the country’s massive propaganda apparatus to continue doing what it does best — glorify the third generation of Kim family rule. And it will tamp down, at least for the moment, rampant rumors of a coup and serious health problems. Before Tuesday, Kim missed several high-profile events that he normally attends and was described in an official documentary last month as experiencing “discomfort.” Archive footage from August showed him overweight and limping, prompting the South Korean media to speculate he had undergone surgery on his ankles. Some experts thought he was suffering from gout or diabetes. A South Korean analyst said Kim probably broke his media si-
lence to dispel outside speculation that he wasn’t in control and to win sympathy from a domestic audience by creating the image of a leader who works through pain. In Mexico, there is perhaps no better representative of the country’s combined cultures and history than the horse trained for “charreria,” the Mexican version of a rodeo. Horses competing in this embellished display of skills once necessary to ranch life, must be agile, well-tempered and intelligent — able to execute the commands of their charros, the horsemen whose traditional riding suits and wide-brimmed sombreros are part of the cultural iconography. For the charro, his horse is as inseparable from himself as it is from the history of Mexico. “We were conquered by horses, we gained our independence with horses, we made our Revolution with horses and we continue to love horses,” said Daniel Flores Yeverino. The 73-year-old Flores, who began learning the skills of a charro when he was about 5 years old, continues to participate in charreria tournaments, where riders compete in riding and roping events. His father and grandfather were charros, and his children and grandchildren have followed the path. Just as charreria is a combination of Old World and New World influences, the horse preferred by charros is itself a combined breed: the American Quarter Horse, which descends from European thoroughbreds and the “native” horses derived from the various stocks brought by the Conquistadors. Other breeds such as Arabians are viewed as too high-strung for the demands of charreria. Horses begin training for charreria at age 3. In Mexico, the career of charro horse runs about a dozen years — 15 if it is cared for particularly well, Flores said. Calm demeanor and strength are prized over lightning speed. Horses can live another 20 years after their charreria days. Unfortunate horses may end their lives pulling rickety garbage carts through city streets or, at worst, a slaughterhouse. The lucky ones find second careers in breeding or as therapy horses.

According to him, children may be incited to imitate violent acts depicted in various games that they may come across in the cyber world, thereby leading to bullying cases. “Children, especially those who have been addicted to violentthemed games, can be dangerous to both themselves and to others,” he emphasized. He noted that electronic games can now be easily accessed and obtained by children through smart phones, tablets, and consoles. The games carrying violent content also offer varying levels
of difficulty that range from low to medium and high. In view of that, Susanto called on the government to take firm action to stop the spread of electronic games that carry violent content and to immediately issue a policy involving all stakeholders, including businessmen, artists, technologists, academicians, and students, to jointly develop creative games that contain educational content. “This may be part of the solution due to the limited number of educational games now. Unless we immediately act, we may lose our future generation,” he remarked. Pregnant women who test positive for HIV are directly treated to minimize the risk of transmitting the virus to their infants,” she stated.
Mboi noted that 71 out of the 534 pregnant women tested in 2011 were found to have contracted HIV and the figure increased to 91 in 2013. “Some of them could be prevented from getting infected by offering them intensive treatment. As the others could not be treated, so their infants were also infected,” she remarked. She called on all pediatricians to proactively spread awareness about the dangers of HIV among expectant mothers. “Pediatricians must be able to decipher more quickly whether or not pregnant women are infected by HIV. If they know that they have tested positive for HIV then they must be treated,” she added.

Top US, Russian diplomats seek thaw in tensions

PARIS — The top U.S. and Russian diplomats are hoping to find a way to begin reversing a yearlong spike in tensions stemming from Ukraine’s revolution and civil war when they meet Tuesday. The formula for improved relations is simple — an easing of Western sanctions in exchange for an end to Russia’s destabilization of its neighbor— though getting there has been far from easy. When Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov gather in Paris, they will be following a familiar script, having conferred regularly since Ukraine’s Moscow-backed leader backed out of an economic agreement with the European Union last year and sparked the protests that would lead to his ouster. After a new government turned toward the West, Russia seized and annexed the Crimean Peninsula. In the east, it has provided support for armed pro-Russian groups despite rising U.S. and European economic sanctions. There are some causes for optimism, however. Most Russian troops appear to have left the scene of the fiercest fighting between government forces and separatist rebels, according to Ukrainian military officials. And with economic penalties beginning to bite in Russia, President Vladimir
Putin is heading to Milan, Italy, for talks with Ukraine’s president and European Union leaders later this week. The discussions between Kerry and Lavrov are seen as a possible first step in the diplomatic process. Given what U.S. officials believe is Putin’s direct orchestration of Russia’s Ukraine policy, one possible outcome Tuesday would be an invitation for direct discussions with the Russian leader — potentially led by Kerry. Thunder prepare to play without MVP Kevin Durant

OKLAHOMA CITY — For the first time, the Oklahoma City Thunder will be forced to play without Kevin Durant for more than a handful of games. The team announced Sunday that the league’s reigning MVP would be out for an undetermined length of time with a fracture in his right foot, at the base of the small toe. Typically, the injury requires surgery and six to eight weeks of healing. The Thunder haven’t officially determined what’s next, although general manager Sam Presti said surgery would be likely. The Thunder will play without Durant on Tuesday night in a preseason game against Memphis. “No one’s feeling sorry for us,” Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said. “I can honestly say I did not receive any text messages from coaches around the league looking to postpone the season.” Opponents have seen more than enough of Durant. Since he entered the league in 2007, he leads the league in points and minutes played. He has missed just 16 regular season games in his seven-year career and has never missed more than eight games in a season. His longest absence was a sevengame stretch during the 2008-09 season because of a sprained right ankle. He missed one game last season, one game the season before, played in all 82 games during the 2009-10 season and all 66 games
during the lockout-shortened 201112 season. “When you look at Kevin, you see all the great offense of abilities and leadership qualities, but you never really think about the toughness, for him to be able to play all those years and play just about every game at a high level, and he continues to get back up,” Brooks said. Point guard Russell Westbrook, who has missed significant time the past two years with a knee injury, admires how durable Durant has been over the years. “Very, very impressive,” Westbrook said. “He’s probably one of the hardest working guys I’ve seen. He comes in every day and does what he’s supposed to do. He doesn’t take days off in practice. He tries to compete every day. It’s definitely unfortunate, but he’s a strong guy mentally and physically, and he’ll get back to his better form.” Brooks said Durant is struggling with the idea of missing games, even though it’s the preseason. “He’s about as good as anybody can possibly be,” Brooks said. “One of the things I love about Kevin is he loves to play. Felipe Massa has called Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli’s decision to take its medium and hard compounds to the Brazilian Grand Prix “dangerous”. Williams F1 driver Massa feels a combination of new asphalt laid on the Interlagos circuit for this year’s race and inclement November weather will make it difficult to use those compounds of tyres effectively. The Brazilian called the choice “completely unacceptable” and urged Pirelli to change its allocation for the event. “I have no idea why they choose medium and hard, it’s completely unacceptable,” Massa said. “It’s a track that you can have rain, it’s a track that can be cold, but you have the hard tyre and it can be dangerous. I don’t understand it. “They change the asphalt [for this year], and normally whatever track I go to where they put down new asphalt, it gets even easier on the tyres. “I have no idea why they choose these tyres.”
Fernando Alonso described Pirelli’s tyre choice for Brazil as “very surprising”, while Massa said he had made his feelings known to the supplier in an effort to get the allocation changed. Pirelli’s motorsport boss Paul Hembery described the criticism as “a bit strange” but said his organisation would re-examine its Interlagos tyre choice to see if there are grounds for change. “We have used the harder tyre at Interlagos before and nobody said anything, so I don’t know why now people want to criticize, it seems a bit strange,” Hembery said. “There has been talk about the effect of the resurfacing; it is a track that has a lot of lateral forces, and it risks being very hot. “You obviously make decisions based on data that you’ve got, [but] if there is a question mark about that then we can look at it. “We have a tyre working group coming up with all the tyre experts, and we will go through it with them.”

Thunder prepare to play without MVP Kevin Durant

OKLAHOMA CITY — For the first time, the Oklahoma City Thunder will be forced to play without Kevin Durant for more than a handful of games. The team announced Sunday that the league’s reigning MVP would be out for an undetermined length of time with a fracture in his right foot, at the base of the small toe. Typically, the injury requires surgery and six to eight weeks of healing. The Thunder haven’t officially determined what’s next, although general manager Sam Presti said surgery would be likely. The Thunder will play without Durant on Tuesday night in a preseason game against Memphis. “No one’s feeling sorry for us,” Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said. “I can honestly say I did not receive any text messages from coaches around the league looking to postpone the season.” Opponents have seen more than enough of Durant. Since he entered the league in 2007, he leads the league in points and minutes played. He has missed just 16 regular season games in his seven-year career and has never missed more than eight games in a season. His longest absence was a sevengame stretch during the 2008-09 season because of a sprained right ankle. He missed one game last season, one game the season before, played in all 82 games during the 2009-10 season and all 66 games
during the lockout-shortened 201112 season. “When you look at Kevin, you see all the great offense of abilities and leadership qualities, but you never really think about the toughness, for him to be able to play all those years and play just about every game at a high level, and he continues to get back up,” Brooks said. Point guard Russell Westbrook, who has missed significant time the past two years with a knee injury, admires how durable Durant has been over the years. “Very, very impressive,” Westbrook said. “He’s probably one of the hardest working guys I’ve seen. He comes in every day and does what he’s supposed to do. He doesn’t take days off in practice. He tries to compete every day. It’s definitely unfortunate, but he’s a strong guy mentally and physically, and he’ll get back to his better form.” Brooks said Durant is struggling with the idea of missing games, even though it’s the preseason. “He’s about as good as anybody can possibly be,” Brooks said. “One of the things I love about Kevin is he loves to play. Felipe Massa has called Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli’s decision to take its medium and hard compounds to the Brazilian Grand Prix “dangerous”. Williams F1 driver Massa feels a combination of new asphalt laid on the Interlagos circuit for this year’s race and inclement November weather will make it difficult to use those compounds of tyres effectively. The Brazilian called the choice “completely unacceptable” and urged Pirelli to change its allocation for the event. “I have no idea why they choose medium and hard, it’s completely unacceptable,” Massa said. “It’s a track that you can have rain, it’s a track that can be cold, but you have the hard tyre and it can be dangerous. I don’t understand it. “They change the asphalt [for this year], and normally whatever track I go to where they put down new asphalt, it gets even easier on the tyres. “I have no idea why they choose these tyres.”

PARIS — The top U.S. and Russian diplomats are hoping to find a way to begin reversing a yearlong spike in tensions stemming from Ukraine’s revolution and civil war when they meet Tuesday. The formula for improved relations is simple — an easing of Western sanctions in exchange for an end to Russia’s destabilization of its neighbor— though getting there has been far from easy. When Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov gather in Paris, they will be following a familiar script, having conferred regularly since Ukraine’s Moscow-backed leader backed out of an economic agreement with the European Union last year and sparked the protests that would lead to his ouster. After a new government turned toward the West, Russia seized and annexed the Crimean Peninsula. In the east, it has provided support for armed pro-Russian groups despite rising U.S. and European economic sanctions. There are some causes for optimism, however. Most Russian troops appear to have left the scene of the fiercest fighting between government forces and separatist rebels, according to Ukrainian military officials. And with economic penalties beginning to bite in Russia, President Vladimir
Putin is heading to Milan, Italy, for talks with Ukraine’s president and European Union leaders later this week. The discussions between Kerry and Lavrov are seen as a possible first step in the diplomatic process. Eurogroup head Jeroen Dijsselbloem said the ministers were looking at ways to reward countries for reforming their economies by giving them financial help with new investment in infrastructure. European officials are trying to push countries such as France and Italy to make their economies more business friendly. There is also a debate about how to find more money for investment. If countries make the effort, Dijsselbloem said, the EU could “support those efforts by supporting investments in those countries.” Dijsselbloem spoke after the ministers met Monday in Luxembourg to debate what to do about the shaky growth prospects for the 18 members of the euro currency union. They had zero growth in the second quarter, and the chance that the eurozone might fall into recession remains a key risk factor for an uncertain global economy. Third quarter figures are due next month. Growth has stalled as many countries cut spending to reduce excessive levels of government debt, removing
the impetus of government spending from the economy. Germany, the biggest eurozone economy, is in better shape but has focused on reducing its deficit rather than spending on new infrastructure, a stance that has brought pressure from the United States and some eurozone governments. European Central Bank head Mario Draghi has urged countries that have room to spend more to do so. Others, such as France and Italy, are being pushed to ease rules on hiring to make their economies more business friendly and attractive to new business investment. Jean-Claude Juncker, incoming head of the EU’s executive commission, has proposed a 300 billion-euro ($380 billion) investment program, but it’s not clear where the money would come from. Germany is opposed to borrowing for infrastructure spending, at least at the national level. France has said it will miss its targets for reducing its budget deficit in according with eurozone budget rules. There is talk of easing pressure on France to comply if there is a sign of progress on pro-growth, structural reforms, although Dijsselbloem was adamant the rules must be observed. JAKARTA - The Indonesia Commission for Child Protection (KPAI) has warned of the dangers of electronic games for children saying that they may also trigger cases of bullying. “The spread of information and technology has affected the younger generation, both in a positive and negative manner,” Susanto, the KPAI head of information division, stated on Tuesday. According to him, children may be incited to imitate violent acts depicted in various games that they may come across in the cyber world, thereby leading to bullying cases. “Children, especially those who have been addicted to violentthemed games, can be dangerous to both themselves and to others,” he emphasized. He noted that electronic games can now be easily accessed and obtained by children through smart phones, tablets, and consoles. The games carrying violent content also offer varying levels
of difficulty that range from low to medium and high. In view of that, Susanto called on the government to take firm action to stop the spread of electronic games that carry violent content and to immediately issue a policy involving all stakeholders, including businessmen, artists, technologists, academicians, and students, to jointly develop creative games that contain educational content. “This may be part of the solution due to the limited number of educational games now. Unless we immediately act, we may lose our future generation,” he remarked. JAKARTA - A total of 1,182 Indonesian pregnant women tested positive for HIV in the first half of this year, according to the Health Ministry. The figure more than doubled from 534 in 2011, Health Minister Nafsiah Mboi remarked during the launch of a manual pertaining to the application of HIV therapy on children and a talk show on ARV therapy for children on Monday. Mboi emphasized that expecting parents and others should abstain from engaging in risky sexual behaviors. “Men must be committed to following non-risky sexual behaviors, so as not to be infected by the virus. If they are infect-
ed, they must get themselves checked, so as not to transmit it to their spouses,” she stressed. In 2006, the government launched a program to diagnose the presence of HIV in pregnant women as part of its efforts to prevent mother-to-child transmission of the disease, she reported. More than 134 thousand pregnant women were tested for HIV in the initial seven months of 2014 as compared to 21 thousand in 2011, she pointed out. “I do hope that more than 270 thousand pregnant women will be tested by the end of 2014. Pregnant women who test positive for HIV are directly treated to minimize the risk of transmitting the virus to their infants,” she stated.
Mboi noted that 71 out of the 534 pregnant women tested in 2011 were found to have contracted HIV and the figure increased to 91 in 2013. “Some of them could be prevented from getting infected by offering them intensive treatment. As the others could not be treated, so their infants were also infected,” she remarked. She called on all pediatricians to proactively spread awareness about the dangers of HIV among expectant mothers. “Pediatricians must be able to decipher more quickly whether or not pregnant women are infected by HIV. If they know that they have tested positive for HIV then they must be treated,” she added.

At the location, the team, accompanied by the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Bangli Agriculture, Horticulture and Forestry Agency, as well as a number of local subak members conducted research on the soil conditions, especially the triggers of broken paddy fields at the site. explained. TABANAN - To achieve a cervical cancer-free Bali, the government of Tabanan continues to encourage women to have early cervical cancer screening through Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA). Such examinations, aimed at determining abnormalities in the cervical epithelia were held at the SOS Desa Taruna Bantas, East Selemadeg, Monday (Oct 13). Of the 200 patients involved in the exams, only 179 women qualified for the IVA examination. As a result, of the 179 patients, 4 patients were tested positive to pre-cancerous lesions. Chief of East Selemadeg Public Health Center I, Ni Wayan Adnyani, explained that pre-cancerous lesions meant that the HPV virus, causing cervical cancer and abnormalities in the epithelial cells of the cervix, had been found.
The abnormalities, had not reached the stage of cancer. However, if the disorder had not been detected so early and had been left untreated, it would surely become cancerous. “If it is left untreated, in the span of 5-10 years, the pre-cancerous lesions will become cancerous,” said Adnyani. The four patients showing pre-cancerous lesions, added Adnyani, were immediately given a cryo treatment to make the HPV virus and cell disorders drop and release. The patients were told to make regular checkups once a week and advised to undergo another IVA examination after six months. “For the time being there are no patients with signs leading to cancer nor have any been referred to hospital. Those with detected lesions just need to control once a week to see the progress,” said Adnyani.
Based on experience, when the pre-cancerous lesions had been detected, the cryo treatment was very an effective measure to prevent the cellular development into cervical cancer. This treatment is less expensive and easier than if pre-cancerous lesions were neglected and develop into cancer. The treatment would become more difficult and the cost become larger if left untreated. On that account, early detection is very important particularly by married women and those under 50 years old. In addition to the IVA inspection, the free treatment was also accompanied with the provision of general treatments, eye examinations as well as the distribution of free spectacles and briefing about the hazards of cervical cancer and the importance of early detection. People expressed discomfortable with the emergence of the swarms of flies around their homes. Due to this disturbance, the residents sent a letter to the regent No.02 /TWS/X/2014 concerning the fly invasion. The people hoped that the regent could review the permit issued to the chicken farm business due to the inconvenient impact perceived by local residents. The Wana Sari subgroup head, I Komang Suartika, feels that the complaint by residents related to the flies and the stench exuded by the chicken coops is justified. They hoped this coop business could be discontinued. Otherwise, people are worried about the disease this livestock pollution will cause. After getting a copy of the letter, the Jembrana Municipal Police immediately came down to the location to check on the chicken coop, Monday (Oct 13). The Municipal Police Peace and Order Section Head, I Gede Suda Asmara, said that from the site inspection it was found that the two chicken coops were owned by two different people. The first coop was owned by I Nengah Suarmawan, while the second by I Putu Antara. Both coops could accommodate 4,500 chickens and 12,000 chickens respectively. Pursuant to Regional Bylaw No.27/2001 on Livestock Business Permit Levy, the business owner should have a certificate of ‘personal farm business’. while, the farm owner having over 15,000 heads of chicken should have a permit for ‘livestock business’. From the informal investigation it was found that, the two farm businesses had in fact not submitted the ‘certificate of smallholding farm’. Thus, his party asked the two chicken coop owners to come to the municipal police office to make a statement. SEOUL, South Korea — After vanishing from the public eye for nearly six weeks, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is back, ending rumors that he was gravely ill, deposed or worse. Now, a new, albeit smaller, mystery has emerged: Why the cane? Kim, who was last seen publicly at a Sept. 3 concert, appeared in images released by state media Tuesday smiling broadly and supporting himself with a walking stick while touring the newly built Wisong Scientists Residential District and another new institute in Pyongyang, part of his regular “field guidance” tours. The North didn’t say when the visit happened, nor did it address the leader’s health. Kim’s appearance allowed the country’s massive propaganda apparatus to continue doing what it does best — glorify the third generation of Kim family rule. And it will tamp down, at least for the moment, rampant rumors of a coup and serious health problems. Before Tuesday, Kim missed several high-profile events that he normally attends and was described in an official documentary last month as experiencing “discomfort.” Archive footage from August showed him overweight and limping, prompting the South Korean media to speculate he had undergone surgery on his ankles. Some experts thought he was suffering from gout or diabetes. A South Korean analyst said Kim probably broke his media si-
lence to dispel outside speculation that he wasn’t in control and to win sympathy from a domestic audience by creating the image of a leader who works through pain. MEXICO CITY — Since their arrival aboard Spanish ships in the 1500s, horses have been part of the story of the New World. In Mexico, there is perhaps no better representative of the country’s combined cultures and history than the horse trained for “charreria,” the Mexican version of a rodeo. Horses competing in this embellished display of skills once necessary to ranch life, must be agile, well-tempered and intelligent — able to execute the commands of their charros, the horsemen whose traditional riding suits and wide-brimmed sombreros are part of the cultural iconography. For the charro, his horse is as inseparable from himself as it is from the history of Mexico. “We were conquered by horses, we gained our independence with horses, we made our Revolution with horses and we continue to love horses,” said Daniel Flores Yeverino. The 73-year-old Flores, who began learning the skills of a charro when he was about 5 years old, continues to participate in charreria tournaments, where riders compete in riding and roping events. His father and grandfather were charros, and his children and grandchildren have followed the path. Just as charreria is a combination of Old World and New World influences, the horse preferred by charros is itself a combined breed: the American Quarter Horse, which descends from European thoroughbreds and the “native” horses derived from the various stocks brought by the Conquistadors. Other breeds such as Arabians are viewed as too high-strung for the demands of charreria. Horses begin training for charreria at age 3. In Mexico, the career of charro horse runs about a dozen years — 15 if it is cared for particularly well, Flores said. Calm demeanor and strength are prized over lightning speed. Horses can live another 20 years after their charreria days. Unfortunate horses may end their lives pulling rickety garbage carts through city streets or, at worst, a slaughterhouse. The lucky ones find second careers in breeding or as therapy horses.

Businesses and governments around the world increasingly are turning to voice biometrics, or voiceprints, to pay pensions, collect taxes, track criminals and replace passwords. “We sometimes call it the invisible biometric,” said Mike Goldgof, an executive at Madrid-based AGNITiO, one of about 10 leading companies in the field. Those companies have helped enter more than 65 million voiceprints into corporate and government databases, according to Associated Press

Typical speaker recognition software compares those characteristics with data held on a server. If two voiceprints are similar enough, the system declares them a match. The Vanguard Group Inc., a Pennsylvania-based mutual fund manager, is among the technology’s many financial users. Tens of thousands of customers log in to their accounts by speaking the phrase: “At Vanguard, my voice is my password” into the phone. The single largest implementation identified by the AP is in Turkey, where mobile phone company Turkcell has taken the voice biometric data of some 10 million customers using technology provided by market leader Nuance Communications Inc. But government agencies are catching up. In the U.S., law enforcement officials use the technology to monitor inmates and track offenders who have been paroled. In New Zealand, the Internal Revenue Department celebrated its 1 millionth voiceprint, leading the revenue minister to boast that his country had “the highest level of voice biometric enrollments per capita in the world.” In South Africa, roughly 7 million voiceprints have been collected by the country’s Social Security Agency, in part to verify that those claiming pensions are still alive. Activists worry that the popularity of voiceprinting has a downside. “It’s more mass surveillance,” said Sadhbh McCarthy, an Irish privacy researcher. “The next thing you know, that will be given to border guards, and you’ll need to speak into a microphone when you get back from vacation.”

The amount has increased by 44.98 percent compared to that of the same period last year, which amounted to US$4.76 million. The stone crafts have contributed 2.30 percent of the Bali’s export total that reaches to US$300.95. This number increased 4.16 percent compared to that of the last year, amounted to US$288.93 million. The stone crafting is mostly created by people from Silakarang Village, Ubud Sub District, and Batubulan, Gianyar District. It is one of Balinese heritages, which has been inherited from generation to generation.

SINGARAJA - Amidst the tourism development at Munduk village in Banjar subdistrict emerges a concern if the recent management of the tourism potential by local residents will run too far. To prevent it from happening, a number of people and stakeholders of the Munduk village tourism suggest the need for participation of local government in protecting the tourism business so that the development will not deviate too far. It was disclosed by the chief of Munduk customary village, Banjar subdistrict, Jro Putu Ardana. He said that since the tourism developed the customary village had taken come efforts to protect the region. The protection could be by tightening the issuance of business license, especially for tourist accommodation development at Munduk village and surrounding regions. So far, the establishment of tourist accommodation with large
number of rooms had indeed been banned. But construction of home stay accommodation or bungalow was still allowed. At the moment, dozens of tourist accommodations had been opened and they were mostly managed by local residents. Only one or two hotels were managed by private company. “In accordance with the policy and agreement of our residents, we want the tourism development here can be made through eco-friendly management together while jointly maintaining the beauty of our rural environment, so that hotel construction is forbidden in polite manner,” he said. To prevent the tourism development and management from going beyond the control, added Ardana, local government was expected to take measures by protecting the tourism of Munduk known to offer ‘a pristine’ landscape, quiet atmosphere and be rich in local arts and culture. The support of local government could be carried out
in accordance with the discussion of the Detailed Spatial Plan Draft (RDTR) of Banjar subdistrict. So far, the customary village had not been involved in the discussion of the Banjar subdistrict spatial plan. However, he hoped that Munduk village area whose economy heavily depending on agriculture and tourism could be protected. In addition, the support of local government through the allocation of funds in the regional budget was very expected by customary village. Bali News AMLAPURA - Evidently the Nawa Kerti village, Abang, Karangasem has the potential for poultry farm development. However, the development of this potential by the quite cool village wis still constrained by the water crisis there. This fact was mentioned by one of the local laying hen breeders, I Wayan Wartawan Sengod, Monday (Oct 13) in Karangasem. He said that his village was cooler than Seraya village or other villages which have been the center of broiler or layer hen breeding. However, until now, livestock development still faces the challenge of the clean water crisis as well as the lack of paving on the ring road leading to the village.. He said that he had learned to breed laying hens a few years ago. Currently he has 2,000 heads of laying hens. He wants to increase this by 1,000 heads. Unfortunately, the water crisis remains an obstacle. “In 2015, I aspire to have 5,000 chickens. Once I reache 5,000 heads, I will breathe easy, because I will be able to turn a profit” he said. According to this breeder, there is already a water pipeline connection to his village. But so far the water had not run. He has therefore been forced to buy clean water from tank trucks. With a total of 2,000
chickens, a tank of water only suffices for four days. The price of water per tank for business purposes sold by subdistrict tank truck is IDR 100,000 in the village, while for public service it only costs IDR 60,000 per tank. With the purchase of water from tank truck, he spends at least IDR 800,000 a month. “This is very expensive for a laying hen business,” he said. According to him, if the Municipal Waterworks (PDAM) provides a connection, it would greatly diminish costs. Actually, he said that if the water company of Karangasem wanted to provide a water connection to Nawa Kerti, it showed great potential for profits as well. Approximately 60 percent of the residents of the village consisting of more than 1,000 families would subscribe to the water service. Presently, local residents face s water crisis every dry season. On the other hand, the acting headman of Nawa Kerti, I Nyoman Karta Rieg, admitted that his residents indeed faced a clean water crisis. For the past few months his residents have being queueing up to request clean water provided by the subdistrict tank truck. “Each day the tank truck makes eight or ten trips, while the queue for clean water involves 200 to 300 families. When this service is delayed, people obviously complain,” he said. (013)

While absorbed in snorkeling on Jemeluk Beach, Purwakerti village, Abang, Nyoman Daniel Ari Setiawan, 21, a resident of Buduk housing estate, Denpasar, lost his luggage stored inside an APV vehicle with license plate DK 1866 FH. As a result of the theft, the victim suffered a material loss worth IDR 47 million. The incident began when Nyoman Daniel and his friends were snorkeling on Jemeluk Beach, Sunday (Oct 12) at approximately 2:30 in the afternoon. Before snorkeling, the victim and his friend put their luggage inside the car. It consisted of a number of bags containing mobile phones and a DSLR camera. At approximately 4:30 that
afternoon, the victim and his friends returned to the vehicle to pick up their clothes. However, when getting into the car the victim did not find the items he had previously placed there. All the items had vanished. The victim of this theft, suffered material losses valued at IDR 47 million. The incident was immediately reported to the Abang Police. According to the investigation of Abang Police officers, it was known the thieving culprit could easily take the victim’s luggage because it was stored inside the unattended vehicle. The case was reported to the police post, on Monday (Oct 13). The case is currently being handled by the Abang Police. (dwa)

The prestigious Nusa Dua Fiesta (NDF) was enlivened by various interesting activities drawing the attention of visitors. For instance, there were 28 local and international artists and models who voluntarily participated in the body painting event that also jazzed up the inauguration of the seventeenth annual Nusa Dua Fiesta, Monday (Oct 13). Body painting has its own charm, which is sometimes underestimated. As a matter of fact, the art of painting with the medium of human body has its own difficulties compared to the use of painting media such as canvas. Chairman of the Nusa Dua Fiesta 2014 Organizing Committee, Ida Bagus Abdhi, explained that the body painting for this year was adjusted to the NDF theme namely Love, Peace and Harmony that would be painted by local artists. “Hopefully, all the artists getting involved could express their artistic capability on the models’ body according to this theme,” he said. Later, he added, that the jury would select three of the models and artists. “Criteria for the assessment related to our theme namely Love, Peace and Harmony,
the quality of the art and aesthetic of the painting results that may not contain any elements of pornography at all,” he said. Meanwhile, Jango Paramartha, a local artist, on that occasion said that the body painting contained a touch of contemporary art. “What we are doing is far from pornography because it is an improvisation originally expressed on canvas as the medium. Then, it is replaced with one’s body,” he said. According to him, the art of body painting could only be produced in Indonesia if did not go up against the laws on pornography. In Bali, the art of body painting demonstrated that the artists were given the freedom to express their own creativity. Dewa Jodi who had already par-
ticipated in the body painting event of the Nusa Dua Fiesta claimed that this art form has its own intrinsic challenges.. Other than the difficulty of making the paint stick to the skin when painting the clothes worn by the model, the paint also quickly gets absorbed so that a lot of paint is required for the colors to remain bright. “It is also difficult, sir, compared to painting on canvas because the paint cannot have texture onthe skin. Much paint is required especially when painting on T-shirts which absorbes so much moisture” said Jodi. Meanwhile, Vinka who twice acted as a model, claimed that being a model in the body painting event was quite tiresome. “It’s tiring to stand for so long and sometimes the paintbrush is ticklish.” she said. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NEW YORK — Katie Holmes will once again play Jackie Kennedy Onassis in a TV miniseries. The actress has signed on to star in “The Kennedys-After Camelot,” a follow-up to “The Kennedys” miniseries for ReelzChannel. It’s based on a book by Randy Taraborrelli. The four-hour miniseries will begin production next year and is slated to air in 2016. Thirty-five-year-old Holmes will executive produce and also direct one episode. John Cassar, who directed “The Kennedys,” will direct the other three episodes. “The Kennedys” was originally made to air on History, but was dropped because the network said it
didn’t fit its brand. The miniseries was later picked up by ReelzChannel and scored record ratings for the network when it aired in 2011. It starred Greg Kinnear as John F. Kennedy and Holmes as the first lady. Kinnear was nominated for an Emmy and SAG Award for his portrayal. Barry Pepper, who played Bobby Kennedy, won the Emmy Award for outstanding lead actor in a miniseries or movie.

The Australian-born singer was nominated for artist of the year as well as song of the year with “Fancy,” which has become a radio favorite through its simple bass line and anthem-like chorus about indulgence sung by Charli XCX. Azalea, whose first studio album “The New Classic” was released in April, received more nominations than any other artist, even though it was the first year she made the list. SEMARAPURA - Having been excessively exploited, the productivity of the swallow nest in Batu Melawang Cave, Ceningan hamlet, Lembongan village, Nusa Penida subdistrict, drastically slumped. Such condition draws the concern about the condition of the cave. On that account, the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) of Bali was asked to issued a recommendation on the real condition of the cave and swallow nest at this time. Thus, the management will not ignore the element of preservation. It was stated by Managing Director of the PDNKK Klungkung, Wayan Sukadana, after a work meeting with the legislative. Other than paying attention to the management, he asserted, the Batu Melawang Cave as natural resources should also be conserved. “Recommendation of the BKSDA Bali is highly required. To make clear, it must make an assessment whether the cliff cave on Ceningan Island is still worth exploiting or not. After exploited massively, we must also think about the conservation efforts,” he said. He admitted to disagree to the assumption if the Batu Melawang Cave became the biggest source of revenue in
the business unit owned by the PNDKK. Even, his party got impression that the previous management handled by the second party, willing to pay at IDR 400 million per year to the PDNKK few years ago, remained to have the assumption if the PDNKK could still increase the revenues by boosting bird’s nest management at Batu Melawang Cave. Sukadana asserted his party wanted to know the current condition of the cave through the data- and fact-based research conducted by the BKSDA Bali. Previously, the last harvest indicated a remarkably declining yield. As a result, an option arose to do preservation first for several years before undertaking further manage-
ment. The BKSDA Bali had checked the condition of the Batu Melawang Cave earlier this year. It was carried out with representatives of the Cooperatives, SMEs, Industry and Trade Agency I Gusti Nyoman Ariawan, then I Wayan Dwipa from the Regional Development Planning Board, Gusti Putu Warna from the BKSDA Bali and Wayan Sukadana as CEO of the PDNKK Klungkung. At that time, the harvest could only produce 235 pieces of bird’s nest. Actually, seeing from the data since the beginning of the harvest made in1991 to 2000, in a single harvest the bird’s nest could produce 4,000 pieces. Unfortunately, after that time, the BKSDA Bali had not issued any recommendation. It could be cross-checked related to the request of the PDNKK. Meanwhile, Wayan Sukadana said the decline in the nest production by swallow population could happen due to poor management by the previous overexploitation. “The exploitation paying no attention to regeneration or sustainability has caused the bird population to reduce drastically,” he said.
