Australian comedian Rebel Wilson wins record $3.7 mln in damages for defamation

MELBOURNE - Australian comedian Rebel Wilson won A$4.6 million ($3.7 million) in damages on Wednesday after a global magazine publisher was found to have defamed her in a string of articles which led to her losing out on Hollywood movie roles. The Supreme Court of Victoria ordered Bauer Media to pay Sydney-born Wilson, best known for her roles in the Pitch Perfect films, A$650,000 in general damages, including aggravated damages, plus A$3,917,472 in special damages, the highest ever for a libel case in Australia. “The damage suffered by Miss Wilson warrants a substantial damages award to vindicate her and nail the lie,” Justice John Dixon said, reading out a summary of his judgement. He said aggravated damages were justified due to Bauer Media’s “unprecedented” global reach and its decision to run a string of articles which claimed Wilson had

lied about her age, real name and some childhood events, even after it knew the allegations were false. “The allegations were based on information from a source who required payment and anonymity and whom the editor considered had an axe to grind,” Dixon said. He said Bauer Media had “kept the story alive for days” for its own profit, knowing the allegations in its Woman’s Day magazine would be picked up by other entertainment media worldwide, and as a result, Wilson missed out on a number of film roles. The damages awarded were based on the judge’s estimate that she had lost out on three lead or co-lead roles, each worth at least A$6.2 million ($5 million), ascribing 20 percent of the lost earnings to Bauer Media’s articles. Wilson, who received the judgement in the middle of the night in Britain, said on social media she was “extremely grateful” for the record sum the judge had awarded her. “Today was the end of a long and hard court battle against Bauer Media who viciously tried to take me down with a series of false articles,” she said. “To me though, this case wasn’t about the money,” she said. adding she plans to give away the money to help some Australian charities and the Australian film industry. Bauer Media said in a statement on its website it was considering the judgement. The previous record for damages in a defamation case in Australia was A$2.3 million, two legal experts said. “Most observers of the case are surprised at the quantum of the judgement, and I would expect that it would be appealed,” said Peter Bartlett, a partner at law firm Minter Ellison. London police arrest woman after incident at Prince George’s school

LONDON - A woman has been arrested in London on suspicion of attempted burglary at a primary school attended by Prince George, the great-grandson of Queen Elizabeth, police said on Wednesday. The four-year-old son of Prince William and Kate Middleton started last week at Thomas’s Battersea, a private school in southwest London. The event was widely publicised in Britain and beyond. London’s Metropolitan Police said a 40-year-old woman was ar-

U.N. seeks “massive” help for Rohingya fleeing Myanmar “ethnic cleansing”

DHAKA/YANGON - The United Nations appealed on Thursday for massive help for nearly 400,000 Muslims from Myanmar who have fled to Bangladesh, with concern growing that the number could keep rising, unless Myanmar ends what critics denounce as “ethnic cleansing”. The Rohingya are fleeing from a Myanmar military offensive in the western state of Rakhine that was triggered by a series of guerrilla attacks on Aug. 25 on security posts and an army camp in which about a dozen people were killed. The United Nations has called for a massive intensification of relief operations to help the refugees, and a much bigger response from the international community. “We urge the international community to step up humanitarian support and come up with help,” Mohammed Abdiker, director of operations and emergencies for the International Organisation for Migration, told a news conference in the Bangladeshi capital. The need was “massive”, he added. The violence in Rakhine and the exodus of refugees is the most pressing problem Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi has faced since becoming national leader last year. U.N. Secretary-

General Antonio Guterres and the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday urged Myanmar to end the violence, which he said was best described as ethnic cleansing. The government of Buddhist-majority Myanmar rejects such accusations, saying it is targeting “terrorists”. Numerous Rohingya villages in the north of Rakhine have been torched but authorities have denied that security forces or Buddhist civilians set the fires. They blame the insurgents, and say 30,000 non-Muslim villagers were also displaced. A U.N. panel of experts defined it as “rendering an area ethnically homogeneous by using force or intimidation to remove persons of given groups”. The crisis has raised questions about Suu Kyi’s commitment to human rights, and could strain relations with Western backers support-

ing her leadership of Myanmar’s transition from decades of strict military rule and economic isolation. Critics have called for her to be stripped of her Nobel prize for failing to do more to halt the strife, though national security remains firmly in the hands of the military. Suu Kyi is due to address the nation on Tuesday. ‘INTERNAL AFFAIR’ China, which competes with the United States for influence in Myanmar, endorses the offensive against the insurgents and deemed it an “internal affair”, Myanmar state media said. “The counterattacks of Myanmar security forces against extremist terrorists and the government’s undertakings to provide assistance to the people are strongly welcomed,” the Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper quoted China’s ambassador, Hong Liang, as telling government officials.

But at the United Nations in New York, China set a different tone, joining a Security Council expression of concern about reports of violence and urging steps to end it. The Security Council met on Wednesday to discuss the crisis and later “expressed concern about reports of excessive violence ... and called for immediate steps to end the violence in Rakhine, deescalate the situation, re-establish law and order, ensure the protection of civilians ... and resolve the refugee problem”. Ad on Sanur Beach raises questions

Video of volcanic activity on Mount Agung goes viral on socal media

AMLAPURA - On Wednesday (Sep. 13), netizens were shaken by the circulation of a video about the increase of volcanic activity from Mount Agung. The video footage looks pretty convincing however, it’s content has not been confirmed by authorities. The 82 second video (1 minute 20 seconds) shot last Wednesday afternoon shows the condition of the cauldron and the crater of the Mount Agung. Two people dressed in Balinese attire alleged to be local climbing guides say there is volcanic activity like bursts of water from the crater of the mountain. The men in the video also say that they heard a booming sound from the depth of the crater followed by the striking smell of sulfur. Head of the Karangasem Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), I.B. Ketut Arimbawa, said he had seen the video and had the information cross-checked with Dewa Merta Yasa, a staff member from the monitoring post at Rendang. In fact, it is true that within the past month there have been several small earthquakes. The BPBD Karangasem through their early warning post has also published data on monitoring results by the Center for Volcanological and Geological Hazard Mitigation conducted at 15:30. Results of the visual

observation stated that Mount Agung has been covered by 0-I to 0-III fog for the last month and that when the mountain is clearly visible, no smoke form the crater has been visible and no sound of avalanche heard. According to data from the Seismograph at Rendang Post for this month, there have been 99 earthquakes, 46 techtonic quakes, 15 local tectonic earthquakes, 37 deep tectonic earthquakes and one shallow tectonic earthquake. Based on the seismic data, Arimbawa said that activity at Mount Agung is at normal levels and remains safe for climbing. Nevertheless, climbers are expected to remain cautious and alert. Anyone who wants to climb the mountain is expected to coordinate with certified guides. The public however has responded differently to the dramatic video. Wayan Suara Arsana, Headman of Amerta Bhuana, Selat subdistrict, who is also Public Relations Officer of Pasar Agung Temple, Selat, admitted that monitoring of Mount Agung is still being conducted by climbing guides. In order to prevent fake information from being taken seriously, Arsana urges the public to wait for information from authorized institutions. “To my knowledge the conditions seen in the video often occur in the crater of the mountain”, he said. DENPASAR - A branded ad that was installed on Sanur Beach has drawn concern. As a public area, there cannot be any long term ads with the name of business on it installed on the beach. Sanr Customary Village has therefore held a plenary meeting to discuss the matter. One of the prominent figures of Sanur customary village, I.B. Ketut Kiana, revealed on Tuesday (Sep. 13) that after the private meeting that was held regarding the branded ad on Sanur Beach on Tuesday (Sep. 2), it was determined that the customary village had never issued any permit for the ad. Customary village authorities have denied rumours that they had received considerable funds from the company that had installed the ad on the beach, the land of which is considered to be an asset of the City of Denpasar. “Since so much discussion was flying around WA (WHatsApp), the custom-

ary village held a serious meeting to address the matter” said Kiana. Kiana added that the installation of such corporate branding in public places is inappropriate. If this ad is allowed to stand they many other companies will follow suit and soon the whole shore will be filled with company names. “Temporary ads are permitted but must be removed once the sponsored event is finished. This ad has been installed in a permanent manner” explained Kiana. According to Kiana, having looked into the details of the permit that the company had obtained, they found that only materials such as cloth and plastic are permitted while this ad does uses other materials. “Despite having obtained permission from the Denpasar Investment Board and Integrated Licensing Office, the customary village objects as such ads could tarnish this tourist destination”, concluded Kiana. Allegation on Buleleng and Bangli borderline shifting

BANGLI - Allegations of the shifting of the territorial boundary between the districts of Buleleng and Bangli at Butiang hamlet, Les village and Siakin village, Kintamani, from the original point conveyed by the Buleleng House of Representatives was responded to by Bangli’s district government through the administrative affairs of the Bangli Regional Secretariat. The district government requested that meeting between the two district governments and community leaders from the border villages he held to discuss the shifting border. Division Head of Administration in the Bangli Regional Secretariat, I Ketut Pesek Lanang Sadia, when asked for his confirmation on Wednesday (Sep. 13) said that the border between the districts of Buleleng and Bangli falls under the authority of the provincial government because it happens the border is located in a protected forest. Previously, said Lanang Sadia, there has been an affirmation of boundaries between the two districts facilitated by the provincial government in collaboration with a topography team from Udayana University. Confirmation of the boundary was carried out to make sure that it corresponded to conditions on the ground. “Moreover, a Minister of Home Affairs’s Decree includes the coordinates of the ter-

ritorial boundary, but I forget the exact numbers”, said Sadia. According to Lanang Sadia, complaints regarding this boundaryline should first be addressed to the provincial government. One they have received this input, the province can facilitate a meeting between the provincial border affirmation team, the district governments of both Bangli and Buleleng along with community leaders from the border villages. Since the border sits in a protected forest area, it needs to be verified together to determine whether it has shifted or not, he said. “Representatives of both districts as well as community leaders need to meet. It would be inappropriate to make any claims of shifting boundaries without verifying the facts in the field. If there has been a shift, the matter needs to be resolved together so that this issue does not drag on”, said Lanang Sadia. Previously, it was reported that the Buleleng House of Representatives suspected there had been a shift in the boundary between the districts of Buleleng and Bangli. The border is situated in a protected forest that has been planted with coffee, cloves and other crops. The border area runs through Butiang village, Les village and Siakin village, Kintamani, Bangli. (kmb41)

BEDFORD - Runway shows at New York Fashion Week have become more elaborate each season and designer Ralph Lauren took it up a notch by combining his love of fashion and vintage cars to showcase his Fall 2017 collection.

As actresses Diane Keaton, Jessica Chastain and Katie Holmes watched from front row seats, models in tailored suits and brightly colored gowns strutted past a red Ferrari, yellow McLaren and a silver Porsche at the Tuesday evening show. It was the first time Lauren showcased his men’s and women’s collections together. Congestion in Ubud getting more severe GIANYAR - Tourism association in Ubud complained about the withdrawal of the Gianyar transportation agency officials since a week ago. Such condition has aggravated traffic jam in the surrounding tourism village. Gianyar transportation agency acknowledged the withdrawal of its personnel because of securing the two great events in the region. Chairman of the Ubud Home Stay Association (UHSA), Ida Bagus Wiryawan, complained on Wednesday (Sep. 13) about the absence of follow-up of a number of meetings to alleviate congestion problems in Ubud. “There is no significant action for Ubud and traffic condition is still the same (jammed—Ed),” he said. This man familiarly addressed as Gus De also complained about the loss of a number of personnel of the Gianyar transportation agency in charge of regulating the traffic at seven points of intersection around Ubud. “Transportation agency officers suddenly disappeared, around since 5 days ago. We do not know why the officers are not content with the condition of Ubud,” he said. He said that in September, the

tourist visit should enter low season, while now tourist visits remain high. Due to being unready, traffic congestion is still unavoidable. “Similarly, I do not understand why there can be such an omission, as if there is no one caring about Ubud,” he said. Separately, the Head of the Gianyar Transportation Agency, Wayan Artana, confirmed the withdrawal of the 14 personnel previously assigned in Ubud since early this September. The agency is said to still require extra personnel for securing two large events currently taking place in Gianyar, namely the Provincial Games and International Conference of National Trusts (ICNT) in Gianyar district. “Our personnel are also limited, so that personnel in Ubud are withdrawn for a while,” he explained. Artana ensured that after the implementation of the two events, the personnel previously served in Ubud will be returned to regulate the traffic in the tourism village. “After this ICNT event, we must return the personnel to regulate the traffic in Ubud. Principal Secretary of the BSN, Dr. Puji Winarni, during her visit and supervision at Taman Griya group at Nyambu village, Kediri subdistrict, on Tuesday (Sep. 12), said the production of eel chips by the Taman Griya group is one and the only eel chip product in Indonesia that have been certified by the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). According to Puji Winarni, currently there are thousands of eel chip products produced in various regions of Indonesia. However, among them, only the eel chip product of the Taman Griya group has been certified with the SNI. She hoped the SNI certificate can still be maintained and the BSN will provide the assistance for three years. Related to this matter, the Head of the Tabanan Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Made Subagia, said on Wednesday (Sep. 13) that his agency keeps doing guidance and quality development to Taman Griya group. According to him, other than eel chips, in the future his agency will also facilitate the handling of SNI certificate for other fishery product of Taman Griya group like the catfish ladrang that has been popular. He added that Tabanan has many domestic industry players with high selling price. However,

they are still difficult to encourage the players to get SNI certificate. One of the obstacles is the absence of special funding for domestic business players wishing to get SNI certificate. Based on the cases occurred, the awareness to obey traffic rules remains low. We promote the distribution of free helmet to make the riders accustomed to using helmet since early on,” he explained. Being a weaver is not without a reason. His age having entered 80 years makes him no longer be able to do other activities. However, in recent months, he cannot work much. What he can do is only preparing raw materials. “I’ve often fallen sick. Right now, I can only roll pandanus leaf, while the weaving is carried out by others. When getting sold, results of the sales are divided,” he said while leaning against the wall of his house. The money obtained is uncertain. Moreover, it is very often inadequate to meet the needs of living with his wife, Ketut Simpen, 75, who is now already sickly.

Nevertheless, he is still grateful. “The result is not much. For the necessities of life, there is a help from the government,” added the man of one child. Another resident, Ketut Sudani, mentioned that such craft is still pursued by about 30 families. Selling price of the mat sizing 1x1.5 meters completed for half-day is IDR 18,000. “In the past, it should be sold to the market, but now the products are searched directly by collectors. Then, proceeds of the selling are divided with the giver of raw materials, so the amount is small,” he said. Such income causes young generation to get uninterested to pursue the work. They prefer to go to urban areas with a reason to earn more income. “All the weavers are of old age, while the young prefer to look for job opportunities to urban areas,” she said. (sos)

Blaze kills 24 at Islamic school in Malaysian capital

KUALA LUMPUR - A fire at an Islamic boarding school for boys killed at least 24 people, most of them students, in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur on Thursday morning, officials said. Officials suspected an electrical short circuit caused the blaze that broke out in a top floor dormitory, where most of the students perished. The fire at Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah, a “tahfiz” boarding school where students learn to memorise the Koran, was reported around 5.40 a.m. local time (2140 GMT Wednesday), according to a statement from the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department. The blaze began in the sleeping quarters on the top floor of the three-storey school building, the statement said. Kuala Lumpur police chief Amar Singh told reporters that 22 students and 2 wardens were killed. All the students were boys aged 13-17, and they probably suffocated due to smoke inhalation. “They’re still counting the bodies, which were piled on top of each other in a corner,” Singh said in the aftermath of one of the worst fires in Malaysia during the past two decades. The dormitory had only one entrance, leaving many of the victims trapped inside, he said. Some witnesses said they had heard the students crying for help after the

fire broke out. “The building was surrounded by metal grills that could not be opened from the inside. The students, after realising the fire and heavy smoke, tried to escape through the window,” said Fire and Rescue Department operations deputy director Soiman Jahid told reporters outside the school. “But because of the grills, they could not escape,” he said. Soiman said they were still investigating the cause of the fire but it was likely caused by short circuit or a lit mosquito repellant coil. CRIES FOR HELP A man identified only as Hazin, who lived next door to the school, said his son called the fire department after they heard screams and saw the flames. “The children were crying for help, but I couldn’t help them as the door was already on fire,” he told Reuters. “I only managed to save a few of the kids who jumped out the window.” Hazin said his friend’s son was among the students who perished. “We ran there because he knew

he was inside, but I couldn’t save him. He was trapped inside,” he said. While the emergency services removed the victims and inspected the site, distraught parents were seen crying as they spoke with officials on the street where hundreds of people had gathered. Viewed from outside the only obvious tell-tale signs of disaster at the school were the blackened upper floor windows, as otherwise the tin roofed building appeared unscathed, with a Malaysian flag hanging limply from the yellow external walls. Only inside did the intensity of the inferno become clear, as the dormitory was completely blackened, lined with the charred frames of bunk beds where the boys had slept. Several of the 18 survivors were taken to hospital to be treated for injuries, officials said. Trucks carrying bodies of the victims were seen arriving at the morgue. Tahfiz schools, which are unregulated by the education ministry and fall under the purview of the religious department, have been under scrutiny since earlier this year when an 11-year-old boy died after reported abuse in Johor, north of Singapore. SEOUL - A North Korean state agency threatened on Thursday to use nuclear weapons to “sink” Japan and reduce the United States to “ashes and darkness” for supporting a U.N. Security Council resolution and sanctions over its latest nuclear test. The Korea Asia-Pacific Peace Committee, which handles the North’s external ties and propaganda, also called for the breakup of the Security Council, which it called “a tool of evil” made up of “moneybribed” countries that move at the order of the United States. “The four islands of the archipelago should be sunken into the sea by the nuclear bomb of Juche. Japan is no longer needed to exist near us,” the committee said in a statement carried by the North’s official KCNA news agency. Juche is the North’s ruling ideology that mixes Marxism and an extreme form of go-it-alone nationalism preached by state founder Kim Il Sung, the grandfather of the current leader, Kim Jong Un. Regional tension has risen markedly since the reclusive North conducted its sixth, and by far its most powerful, nuclear test on Sept. 3, following a series of missile tests, including one that flew over Japan. The 15-member Security Council voted unanimously on a U.S.drafted resolution and a new round of sanctions on Monday in response, banning North Korea’s textile exports that are the second largest only to coal and mineral, and capping fuel supplies. Kintamani customary village held magoak-goakan tradition on Thursday (Mar. 23). The tradition was attended by approximately 4,000 people ranging from children, adolescents, adults to the elderly. The tradition was organized in a series of Nyepi Desa at the local customary village. From the morning, thousands of people putting on middle traditional attires have thronged the village square or sacred land to implement magoak-goakan tradition. Not infrequently, the participants should turn upside down due to the sloping arena. In addition, a number of participants, especially women, were crushed by the other participants. Nevertheless, it did not reduce the enthusiasm of residents to follow the tradition. Amid the activities, chief of Kintamani customary village, Nyoman Sukadia, said that magoak-goakan tradition has been started at 8:00 until midnight. This activity is routinely held every year considering this tradition is the legacy of ancestors that must continue to be preserved. “The magoak-goakan tradition has something to do with religious ceremonies of Nyepi Desa of Kintamani village. This event has been organized since the full moon of Balinese ninth month (Mar. 12) and the ceremony ended at 00:00 on Wednesday,” he said. Sukadia explained that the magoak-goakan tradition aims to more establish relationship among the residents of Kintamani customary village.

They should not cut down trees that are still alive. “Meanwhile, the day after tomorrow (Saturday—Ed) is the preservation that has something to do with land and the earth. batter of a marble size. Place this batter on the banana midrib by doing serud-serud (pulling down gently) with the thumb, so that it will look like a flower. Subsequently, place on banana leaf and then steam. While waiting this, prepare brown sugar sauce by means of boiling and make grated coconut. Once cooked, take it out and cool down. Remove the jaja serud from banana leaves and then put on a plate. After that, sprinkle with grated coconut and brown sugar sauce. Now, it is ready to serve. (kmb)

EU officials hope leaders may discuss the issues at a dinner on Sept. 28 before a summit in Estonia. “If we want the euro to unite rather than divide our continent, then it should be more than the currency of a select group of countries,” Juncker said. “The euro is meant to be the single currency of the European Union as a whole.” He noted that only long-standing EU members Britain and Denmark have a legal right not to adopt the euro. EU officials say that with Britain leaving, and the eight remaining non-euro states accounting for only 15 percent of EU GDP, Juncker sees it as natural for EU and euro zone policy to operate in unison. For that reason, he rejected proposals, led by France, for a special euro zone budget, finance minister and parliament. These functions, he said, should be filled instead by a vice president of the Commission, chairing the Eurogroup of 19 euro zone finance ministers and managing a euro zone budget that would be part of the budget for the whole EU, overseen by Parliament. Spain calls Catalan mayors for questioning on independence vote

MADRID - Spain’s state prosecutor has summoned more than 700 Catalan mayors who have backed an independence referendum, in an escalation of Madrid’s efforts to block the vote that it has declared illegal. Officials engaging in any preparations for the vote could be charged with civil disobedience, abuse of office and misuse of public funds, the prosecutor said in a letter delivered to local authorities on Wednesday. If the mayors do not answer the summons, police should arrest them, it added. One mayor said the legal move was unprecedented. “We don’t think any European country has ever tried to make more than 700 mayors testify,” said Neus Lloveras, mayor of Vilanova i la Geltru near Barcelona, head of the Association of Municipalities for Independence (AMI). “We have nothing to hide. When we have to go and testify, we will say everything we have been saying for days, that we owe it to our people to keep working to make sure they can freely express themselves at the ballot box,” he told reporters. But the small, anti-capitalist CUP group, which governs 19 Catalan municipalities, said it would not answer the summons, and called on other political forces to do the same. Catalonia’s regional parliament passed laws last week to prepare for a referendum on Oct. 1. Spain’s Constitutional Court suspended the vote after Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy challenged it in the courts.

Judges are now considering whether the legislation contravenes Spain’s constitution, which states that the country is indivisible. So far, 712 of a total 948 municipal leaders have said they would allow public spaces to be used for the referendum, according to AMI. The mayor of Barcelona - the region’s most populous area - has yet to take a definitive position, and has asked for reassurances that civil servants involved in the process will not risk losing their jobs. The website set up by the Catalan government to give information on the vote, referendum.cat, stopped working on Wednesday evening, with Spanish media reporting that the regional prosecutor had ordered all websites promoting the referendum to be shut down. Civil Guard police confirmed that they had gone to deliver a warrant at the website’s offices, but declined to say if judges had ordered it to be closed. Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont quickly posted two new web addresses on Twitter linking to a page with information on the referendum. Polls show a minority of Catalans want self-rule, although a majority want the chance to vote on the issue. Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Barcelona this week to show support for independence. In flood-prone Jakarta, will “Giant Sea Wall” plan sink or swim?

BANGKOK - Indonesia’s bustling capital, Jakarta, is sinking faster than any other city in the world. But an ambitious plan to build a giant wall to keep out the encroaching sea has come under fire from fishermen who fear for their catches and homes, and water experts who say it doesn’t do enough to tackle land subsidence. The city’s northern areas have sunk 4 metres (13 ft) in the past 40 years, Japanese experts say, while some ‘hot spots’ are said to be dropping as much as 20 centimetres a year. The 10 million residents of the low-lying coastal city, built on a

swampy plain, are exposed to tidal and seasonal flooding. In 2013, parts were

submerged under nearly 2 metres of water after a heavy monsoon storm. Jakarta’s vulnerability to floods - already exacerbated by population growth, urbanisation and changing land use - rises with every centimetre the ground falls. Experts and residents agree that over-extraction of groundwater for drinking and commercial use is largely responsible for the land subsidence. What they don’t agree on is how to tackle it. An iconic infrastructure project that is supposed to ease Jakarta’s flooding woes is mired in uncertainty. The Dutch, regarded as the foremost authorities on the concept of “living with water”, are lending their expertise via the flood prevention plan involving a giant sea wall that will close off Jakarta Bay, which could cost up to $40 billion. Critics, however, say the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD) programme does not address land subsidence - the underlying reason for flooding. At the same time, “the government is throwing away access to the sea” for tens of thousands of people in the bay who rely on fishing and fish-processing, said Ahmad Marthin Hadiwinata of the Indonesia Traditional Fisherfolk Union. He worries that local residents will be evicted from their homes to make way for the new infrastructure. Unveiled in 2014 - and better known as the “Great Garuda” or “Giant Sea Wall” - the project involves raising and strengthening the existing onshore embankment of Jakarta Bay, as well as constructing a 15-mile outer sea wall and developing real estate on artificial islands reclaimed from the

ocean. Seen from the air, the mega construction project was initially shaped like a garuda, the bird-god of Hindu mythology that is Indonesia’s national symbol. But the design was changed in response to opposition and a government request to incorporate another project led by private developers to build 17 artificial islands, said Victor Coenen, Indonesia representative for Witteveen+Bos, a Dutch engineering consultancy leading the NCICD consortium. Its partners, which also include South Korea, are now awaiting the government’s decision on the final plan, he added. A June document outlining an updated NCICD master plan, seen by the Thomson Reuters Foundation, confirmed the new design and emphasised the importance of stopping land subsidence, as well as addressing water and sanitation issues. The Ministry of National Development Planning did not respond to requests for comment. FISHERMEN SUFFER

The NCICD is one of many water projects the Dutch have embarked on in their former colony. In May, Indonesia gave the go ahead to Dutch companies to build the world’s largest tidal power plant in eastern Indonesia. Three Dutch non-profit groups - Both ENDS, the Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations (SOMO) and the Transnational Institute - said in an April report that the NCICD threatened the livelihoods of tens of thousands of people and had failed to follow design guidelines that would apply in the Netherlands, calling it a

“pseudo-solution”. Hadiwinata from the Fisherfolk Union said local communities also object to a lack of consultation and impact assessments. At least 25,000 fishermen have been hit by work already done for the project and other land reclamation initiatives along Jakarta Bay, which have caused sedimentation, he added. They have to go further to find fish, whose numbers are now very low, he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. Many, including Hadiwinata, are hoping Anies Baswedan, who won a hard-fought election for the post of Jakarta governor in April, will stop or modify the project when he takes office in October. Work was suspended for several months in 2016 amid regulatory and environmental concerns. During his campaign, Baswedan was vocal about his opposition to the NCICD but has said nothing since. He was not available to comment for this article. Coenen said stopping land subsidence is important but could take 15 to 20 years, meaning Jakarta should work on flood prevention at the same time. The future of the crowded city’s flood protection lies offshore because it has no space for flood basins, he added. “It’s only a question of how far offshore you go, how big you want to build, and how long you want it to last, because the smaller the scheme, the shorter the lifetime will be,” he said. The project’s first phase of strengthening the existing embankment along Jakarta’s shoreline, which began in 2014, is about a third complete, Coenen said. (rtr)

GIANYAR - Social media has us swooning with the waterfalls in Bali—we just can’t get enough! While the famous waterfalls are mostly located at Buleleng, the northern regency of Bali, there is a new waterfall closer to Denpasar for you to visit on a light road trip in Bali. One of such is Kanto Lampo, located at Banjar Kelod Kangin, Beng village at Gianyar sub-district, only 12 kilometres away from Ubud Palace. You can reach it either from Ubud, or Denpasar through Ida Bagus Mantra By Pass in less than an hour drive. The waterfall is just 6 months old. The flat stones had been there for many years but only after the big prayer last year that the water starts to fall here. It is not so magical, as the source of the water came from is a dam at the hilt of the waterfall. But surely this is a blessing for the village, because the new natural attraction invites more tourists to come and therefore brings fortune to the villagers around. If you had to go through a long road out of nowhere to get to the waterfalls in Buleleng, this one is located just behind the town of Gianyar. Within two kilometers at the north of Gianyar’s city court Lapangan Astina, through Jalan Kalantaka and crossing to Jalan Gunung Agung, the waterfall is just at the end of the next turn to the east at Jalan Gunung Abang. The area is a neighborhood and an unassuming location for a waterfall just behind it.

There is a small motorbike parking lot, so if you come with car you can park it a little further along the road. Stepping down the stairs, you will get welcomed by a spectacular view of the lush green rainforest enveloping you. On your right side is the waterfall and you can change clothes to swimsuits on the left side of the stairs. If you are up for a little adventure, go down the stairs on your left and walk along the riverbank. Locals love to fish here, as the 60-80 centimeters deep river has eels and small fishes. Crossing the 2 meters-wide river, you can climb up the rocks on the left side and walk along the pathway to a cave. There isn’t so much to find here but the view is just spectacular, especially to see the waterfall from the end of the pathway. The name Kanto Lampo is taken from the local name of the trees that grow a round orange fruit around the area. The entrance fee is IDR 5,000 per person, so it’s very affordable for a weekend family picnic in the nature. You may bring swimsuits and be ready to get wet. The terrain is one of the easiest of all waterfalls in Bali, so it’s also suitable for children to visit. You can climb up the rocks on the waterfall to get pictures, but be sure your camera or phone is waterproof or well covered. If the tour here doesn’t satisfy you enough, there is another waterfall just 3 kilometres north so you can get two waterfalls in a day. (IBP/net)

LOS ANGELES - The UFC stripped Jon Jones of the light heavyweight championship title on Wednesday following his positive drug test and reinstated Daniel Cormier as champion. Jones tested positive for a steroid prior to his July 29 title fight against Cormier, which he won in a third-round TKO. The second sample from Jones’s failed test also came back positive on

Tuesday and the Cormier fight was subsequently ruled a “no contest” by the California State Athletic Commission. Jones, 30, was previously banned for a year after failing a doping test in the run-up to a title fight against Cormier in July, 2016. The Games, starting in February, are also faced with an escalating North Korean crisis that has now become a major hurdle in preparations. BERLIN - Bayern Munich are again living up to their FC Hollywood tag, as a combination of lacklustre performances, public disagreements and talk of a successor to coach Carlo Ancelotti has provided an abundance of early-season drama. Bayern’s start to the season has not been particularly bad with two wins and a defeat in the Bundesliga, and a 3-0 win over Anderlecht in the Champions League on Tuesday. In a magazine interview, the Polish forward criticised Bayern’s refusal to match the huge transfer fees splashed out by the likes of Paris St Germain and Barcelona. “If you want to compete at the top, you need to have these quality players,” he said. Lewandowski was criticised by Bayern’s chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge who in turn was questioned by the club president Uli Hoeness. Rummenigge, like Hoeness a former Bayern player, said the club had a “serious and successful philosophy that has brought us big success.” He regretted Lewandowski’s comments. But Hoeness felt that players should be able to think for themselves and suggested that Rummenigge had overreacted. Argentine striker Carlos Tevez is “overweight” and will not feature for Shanghai Shenhua until he gets fit, according to club’s caretaker manager Wu Jingui. Tevez, 33, has recently returned to China following a two-week trip to Argentina to recover from a muscle injury. Wu also criticised midfielder Fredy Guarin’s fitness levels in an interview with South China Morning Post.
