TOKYO – Japan’s prime minister faces off against a powerful political veteran in a ruling party vote Tuesday that could give the country its third premier in a year. Ichiro Ozawa, an old-school power-broker who has been in parliament for 40 years, is seeking to oust Prime Minister Naoto Kan as head of the Democratic Party. Because of the party’s majority in the lower house of parliament, its leader will almost certainly become prime minister. Media reports say the outcome was too close to predict, with as many as 30 party members still undecided ahead of Tuesday afternoon’s vote.

It is interesting to observe whether the efforts of Bali House to make a decision concerning with tajen can be performed properly. Certainly, many special provisions will impede it. The deceased had undergone medical treatment in Emergency Room of Bangli Hospital with shortness of breath complaint. However, after obtaining medical check, in fact hypertension of the deceased had complication with heart disease. Finally, the deceased was rushed to ICU Room of Sanjiwani Hospital in Gianyar Regency. Not long after getting help, the deceased died in the ICU Room of Sanjiwani Hospital. The deceased’s body was still laid down by family at Griya Giri Jati Suta Kencana, Bangli, while waiting for the results of higher priest assembly considering the deceased is one of the higher priests named Ida Pedanda Gede Nyoman Putra. Based on information collected in Bangli Hospital, the deceased was referred to Bangli Hospital last Saturday (Sep 11) night at around 11:00 pm due to a shortness of breath. Having been examined, the deceased suffered from hypertension indicating 240 per 110. Upon consideration of the family, the deceased was then rushed to the Sanjiwani Hospital, Gianyar.
Younger brother of the deceased, IB Giri Putra admitted that the death of his brother was of a sudden. In the morning, the deceased officiated a melasti procession at one of the local hamlets. Even, in the evening until around 10:30 pm, the deceased was still hosting some residents asking for spiritual consultation. But, at around 11:00 pm he was contacted by the family. It was explained that the health condition of the deceased declined with shortness of breath symptoms. Without thinking longer, he rushed him to Bangli Hospital. 15 killed in disputed Kashmir in deadly protests AP
SRINAGAR, India – Indian forces fought Kashmiri demonstrators in street battles that killed 15 people — including one police officer — in the deadliest day in a summer of violence challenging Indian rule in the disputed territory. Reports of a Quran desecration in the United States intensified the anger, with activists chanting “Down with America” and burning an effigy of President Barack Obama in a rare anti-U.S. protest here. The spasm of violence Monday came even as Indian officials debated whether to make goodwill gestures to try to ease tensions in the war-wracked region, which is divided between India and Pakistan and fully claimed by both. Since 1989, a violent, separatist insurgency and the ensuing crackdown by Indian forces have killed an estimated 68,000 people. Although the armed rebellion is largely suppressed, the region remains heavily militarized, with checkpoints along main roads, hundreds of thousands of troops stationed here and harsh emergency laws still in force, creating further friction with the restive population. In the past three summers, the mainly Muslim protesters have taken to the streets to throw stones and demand that the Himalayan region be given independence from Hindu-dominated India or be allowed to merge with predominantly Muslim Pakistan. Despite a rigid curfew after a weekend of violence, tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets Monday, throwing rocks, torching government buildings and a Christian school, and chanting, “Go India, go back. We want freedom.” Security forces shot at crowds in about a dozen different places, killing 13 people and wounding 45 others, said Kuldeep Khoda, the director-general of the state police. TOKYO – Japan’s foreign minister apologized for the suffering of a group of former World War II prisoners of war visiting from the United States and said they were treated inhumanely. The six POWs, their relatives and the daughters of two men who died are the first group of U.S. POWs to visit Japan with government sponsorship, though groups from other countries have been invited previously. “I offer my deep, heartfelt apology for the inhuman treatment you suffered,” Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada told the group Monday. The POW group’s leader, 90-yearold Lester Tenney, who survived the Bataan Death March in 1942, said he welcomed the government’s apology but still seeks recognition from the private companies that “used and abused” prisoners in their mines and factories, often under brutal conditions. “At no time have we gotten from these private companies just a letter,”
Tenney said. “These private companies have kept quiet for 65 years. It is an insult, because by their keeping quiet they are hoping we will die off.” Japan surrendered in 1945 after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japanese leaders have apologized for the country’s militarist past many times, but the government contends that all reparations issues were settled by treaties after the war. Japanese courts have also ruled that reparations issues must be dealt with on a country-to-country basis, but cases challenging that are pending in several courts. After a short time in Tokyo, each POW will travel to a city of his choice. Some will visit the factories, docks or mines where they worked. Tenney was involved for decades in
trying to arrange the visit and has lobbied for redress from the companies that used POWs after their capture. The companies have had no comment on the visit. Tenney was taken prisoner in 1942 by the Japanese military and forced along with 78,000 prisoners of war — 12,000 Americans and 66,000 Filipinos — to walk from the Bataan peninsula on the Philippine island of Luzon to a prison camp. As many as 11,000 died during what became known as the Bataan Death March. He was then brought to Japan and forced to work for Mitsui Mining Co. — now Nippon Coke and Engineering Co. The company has ignored his requests to meet, and he said he does not plan to visit the site of his forced labor. Tenney and his wife, Betty, will instead visit the grave of a Japanese man in Matsuyama who stayed with them as an exchange student in San Diego, California, in 1968 and became a close friend. CANBERRA, Australia – Former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is to visit the United States within days of being sworn in on Tuesday to his new role as Australia’s foreign minister. Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who ousted Rudd in an internal government mutiny in June then led her Labor Party to a narrow election victory last month, has fulfilled a promise by including him in a senior role in her Cabinet. Before the new ministers were to be sworn in on Tuesday, Gillard and Rudd announced in a joint
statement that he will visit Washington and New York from Friday through Sept. 25. “This visit underlines the very high priority that the government places on its relations with the United States, Australia’s key strategic partner,” the statement said. Rudd, a former diplomat to Beijing who speaks fluent Mandarin, had endeavored during almost three years as prime minister to elevate Australia’s influence in global affairs and lobbied to gain Australia a temporary seat on the U.N. Security Council. Rudd will represent Australia at the U.N. General Assembly while in New York.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Former British PM Tony Blair gets Liberty Medal PHILADELPHIA – Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair received the Liberty Medal on Monday for his global human rights work and commitment to international conflict resolution. The Philadelphia-based National Constitution Center gives the medal annually to individuals or organizations whose actions strive to bring liberty to people worldwide. Blair was honored for his work with the Tony Blair Faith Foundation, which promotes religious tolerance; for his initiative to improve governance in Africa; and for advancing peace in Northern Ireland and the Middle East, among other efforts. After accepting the award from former President Bill Clinton, Blair said that liberty is the result of “ordinary human beings doing extraordinary things in the midst of Earthchanging events.” “Liberty is not acquired by accident,” Blair said. “It’s won by endeavor.” The tribute comes amid a publicity tour for Blair’s best-selling memoir, “A Journey,” which was released Sept. 1. The autobiography re-energized British and Irish anti-war protesters, who continue to blast Blair for supporting the U.S. invasion of Iraq. A hostile crowd threw shoes and eggs at him at a book-signing in Dublin this month, and he canceled a similar event in London for fear of disruption. But Ozawa has strong support from his parliamentary faction, including many who feel obligated to him for his role in starting their political careers. A master strategist, he’s credited with orchestrating the Democrats’ historic victory last August that toppled the long-ruling conservative Liberal Democratic Party — the party he started out in before breaking away in 1993. Kan, who also has a loyal core behind him, has faced criticism for the party’s loss in July’s upper house elections — particularly his ill-timed proposal before the vote to raise Japan’s 5 percent sales tax to as high as 10 percent. The leadership dispute has distracted Japan at a critical time, with the yen’s spike to a 15-year high hurting its car and electronics exporters and its economy — recently passed up by China’s — stagnating.
Also, Tokyo has gotten embroiled in a diplomatic spat with China after a Chinese fishing trawler last week collided with Japanese patrol boats near some disputed islands off Taiwan. He said Sunday’s knife attack by unknown assailants, which left one church elder badly injured and a priest with head wounds, was a highly sensitive matter for the mainly Muslim archipelago. “There is no space for violence from and against anyone for any reason, especially over the sensitive issue of inter-religious community relationships in our country,” he told reporters. “I have ordered the police to find the attackers and to prosecute them according to our law.” He made his comments after meeting the security minister and police chief, amid complaints that the authorities have failed to prevent persistent attacks on the Protestant church group by Muslim extremists. Police however continued to refuse to link the attack to wellknown tensions between Muslims and Christians in Bekasi outside Jakarta, even as they announced that nine people had been arrested. “There were indications of religious conflict but we prefer not to
link it for the time being as our investigation is still ongoing,” police spokesman Marwoto Soeto said. “We don’t yet know the motives of the perpetrators or their religion.” Witnesses said the attackers were wearing Muslim garb and Yudhoyono clearly linked the assault to religious discord over the Christians’ requests to establish a place of worship in the mainly Muslim area. He called on the relevant authorities to “immediately” find a solution to the “conflict related to the place of worship”. Eighty percent of Indonesia’s 240 million people are Muslims but the country’s constitution guarantees freedom of religion. Human rights groups say religious violence has been on the rise in recent months, mainly by Muslims against minority groups including Christians. The governing coalition, which includes Islamic parties, has failed to crack down on several violent Islamic vigilante groups which take the law into their own hands with almost total impunity.

JAKARTA - Indonesian police said Tuesday they will investigate allegations that members of a USand Australian-backed anti-terror unit have tortured political activists in the eastern province of Maluku. The Detachment 88 counter-terror squad allegedly tortured 12 suspected separatists who were arrested last month for possessing an outlawed South Maluku Republic (RMS) flag. The allegations came as another Maluku separatist, Yusuf Sipakoly, died in custody on Monday from injuries his family says were sustained during torture. Sipakoly was arrested in 2007 for unfurling the outlawed flag and performing a traditional war dance in front of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Police in Ambon, the capital of Maluku province, denied that his death was the result of kidney failure stemming from torture, and dismissed allegations that he had been denied medical treatment for years. But police spokesman Marwoto Soeto told AFP in Jakarta that allegations against Detachment 88 officers related to the suspects arrested between August 1 and 7 would be the subject of a “thorough investigation”. “If the allegations are true, the officers could face charges... Torture is a criminal act which carries a maximum penalty of nine years
in jail,” he said. The Sydney Morning Herald reported Monday that members of Detachment 88 had beaten the detainees for up to a week, brought them close to suffocation with plastic bags, stabbed them with nails and forced them to eat raw chillies. Detachment 88 receives millions of dollars in funding and support from Australia and the United States, which helped establish the unit in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks and the 2002 Bali bombings. Keen to foster ties with a mainly Muslim emerging economic power, the United States announced in July that it would resume ties with Indonesia’s Kopassus special forces unit, which is also accused of atrocities and torture. Australia resumed ties with Kopassus in 2003 after severing ties in 1999 over the force’s role in alleged crimes against humanity in East Timor. An Australian foreign affairs spokesman said Canberra was “concerned” about the allegations against Detachment 88 and embassy officials had made inquiries with the Indonesian police, including during a recent visit to Ambon. Indonesia is a signatory to the UN Convention Against Torture but it has no corresponding law against the practice, which is widespread throughout the country’s prisons and police forces. The UN special rapporteur for torture visited Indonesia in 2007 and
found that police used torture as a “routine practice in Jakarta and other metropolitan areas of Java”, the most populated island in the archipelago. Human rights groups including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have recently accused the police and military of torturing political detainees in the name of anti-terror operations. Commission for Disappearances and Victims of Violence deputy chief Haris Azhar said Detachment 88 was increasingly being used in operations that were unrelated to its core anti-terror mission. “There needs to be an evaluation by donor countries like Australia and the US who are providing capacity building,” he said. “Their contribution should be directed to the protection of civilians in the form of fair trials. They should not be cooperating with those who threaten and worsen the human rights situation.” Indonesia has fought numerous separatist insurgencies throughout the sprawling archipelago — including an ongoing but low-level conflict in Papua — and remains extremely sensitive to breakaway movements. Jakarta crushed the RMS shortly after its declaration of independence in 1950 but the movement was revived following the fall of authoritarian president Suharto in 1998.

PALU - Central Sulawesi police arrested 29 illegal immigrants from Afghanistan in Palu on Monday night, local immigration office spokesman Yusuf Sadu said here on Tuesday. “At 11.30 last night, I learned from the police that they had arrested 29 illegal immigrants from Afghanistan,” Yusuf Sadu said. But he did not say where the illegal immigrants were arrested, while their identities were also still unknown. However, Sadu added, the police would later on Tuesday hand them to the Palu immigration office for further investigation.
“I have been informed that the 29 illegal Afghan immigrants will be handed to the immigration office here later on Tuesday,” Sadu said, adding that the 29 Afghans were in the same group as four others who were arrested at Mutiara airport here and handed to Makassar immigration office in South Sulawesi early this month. He said the four illegals arrested early this month were identified as Muhammad Qaiser Turre (21), Baba Ali (48 ), Walli Khan-Khan (28) and Ali Reza (18). There were actually five people but when they were about to be arrested one of them , identified as Qaisar Najem (30), managed to escape.
Three Sukhoi technicians die of asphyxiation in Makassar MAKASSAR - Three Russian jet fighter technicians helping the Indonesian Air Force operate newly acquired Sukhoi jet fighter aircraft in Makassar have died in still unclarified circumstances. A South Sulawesi police spokesman, Senior Commissioner Hery Subiansuri, only said on Tuesday, the three Russians, identified merely by their first names as Alexander, Voronim, and Victor, were medically diagnosed as having died of asphyxiation. Autopsies were done on their bodies by a forensic laboratory team of
Hasanuddin University which concluded they had died of suffocation after suffering from nausea and headache, Hery said. The three Russians were members of a warranty team of the manufacturers of Sukhoi SU-27 SKM fighter jets which would reinforce the Indonesian Air Force’s 11th Squadron stationed at Sultan Hasanuddin air base in Makassar. They arrived in Makassar on Sunday Sept 5 and would stay for a year to guarantee the good condition of several Sukhoi jet fighter pkanes Indonesia had bought from Russia.

Bali Today Tenth of whales stranded in Bali Antara
Denpasar – Over 20 kinds of animals such as whale, dolphins and other sea mammals were stranded in Bali’s beach on the last ten years. Pariama Hutasoit, a member of Nusa Dua Reef Foundation, said “the rare animals were found stranded in Benoa, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, Tanah Lot, and Perancak.” He also explained that almost every year there is cases of stranded animals and in 2009, there was five cases where four of them happened in August. Pariama said that the species that stranded mostly was sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), shortfinned pilot whales (Globicaphala marcorinchyus), and some of them were unidentified. Bali is one of the areas which are rich with various sea mammals. Their existence is also attracting tourists to see them. In Lovina beach, Buleleng regency, as well as in Badung strait, is known as the path of migrated whales.
The people or tourists who want to travel to Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida from Sanur beach often see dolphins that follow their boats. Pariama said that the cases of stranded animals in Bali make the government and related departments must create the proper procedures to handle the problem. One of the methods is by creating coordination and networks in saving and conserves the areas and animals in Bali. He said that in order to create the network, a workshop will be held on September 16th 2010 in Nusa Dua. There is great hope that by conducting the workshop, there will be better handling for stranded animals in Bali.

Discussing the archaeological protection in Bali, it should be remembered that Bali, even a very small island, but has a lot of archaeological monuments, which most of them belonged to living monuments. Among them are a number of Hindu tample, spreated nearly in the whole island, as well as Hindu stastues , inscription etc. As the holy monuments for Balinese society, so the Balinese have the responsibility to take care their monuments as their religious function Officially, archaeological protection in Bali is done by Bali Office for Preservation of archaeological and Historical Heritage (Kantor Bali Suaka pening-gelang Sejarah dan Purbakala Bali) in coordialnation and corporation with the local government and local people as well. This office have done a lot of archaeological reconstruction, but not yet covered the whole of them, because of the limited budgets etc. In case of protecting the archaeological monuments in Bali, Bali Office for Preservation of

Based on religious reasons, actuality Balinese society has a strong spirit to keep their monuments in a well condition as holy monuments. Since a very long time the Balinese people have maintained and restored their monuments in a very traditional ways, based on their own religious will and spirit, and for this purpose they collected the materials, even reasonable money from the village members. The village members, especially the skilled members (Balinese, undagi) did the restoration and led by the village leader, without any payment (Balinese, ngayah). This mutual model of works named gotong royong is one of the Indonesian spirits, which has been developed since the early time until today. It is a remarkable fact since the early time Balinese people have done the archeological protection in their traditional ways, which really should be regarded as a community based conservation. The most important meaning of these facts is the Balinese have done their religious task, which still continued from one generation to next generation and still retained until today. Therefore these facts indicated that the Balinese people from time to time have played important role for protecting their archeological monuments, for worshipping their ancestor’s spirit, the Hindu Trinity as well as their local deities. It is hoped that this religious traditions should be keep in people’s mind and increased, now and in the near future for the safeguarding the archeological monuments and its cultural values. Antara Denpasar – The increase in tourism sector along with the long holiday is also affecting the economics condition in Bali. On the third quarter of 2010, Bali’s economics grow 6%. Jeffrey Kairupan, the head of Indonesian Bank branch Denpasar said that the increase is because the increase in tourists visitation to Bali on the long holiday. The economics is still dominated by trade, hotels and restaurants sectors followed by farming and other services. Household consumption is till dominating the demand in the economics sector. Jeffrey said that there is some problems face by economy in Bali such as the low productivity of the farming sector. This is because the weather
in Bali is unpredictable in the last few months. The inflation in Denpasar in the third quarter of 2010 will be quite high and it is predicted to be around 7%-8%. The high inflation is because the increase in electricity fare and education fee. The development of the global economics condition is also affecting Bali. The data from Bali Tourism Department stated that from January through June 2010, 1.3 million people visited Bali. The number increase 12% compared to the same period last year. In order to attract more tourists, the safety level must be maintained and the tourism attraction must be added. There is great hope that the economics condition in Bali will keep increasing in the next few month.

Mince fish fillet very finely in a food processor or with a chopper. 2. Add all other ingredients & mix well. 3. Crisis not over until job picture improves Agence France-Presse OSLO - Victory over the global economic downturn can only come through a major cut in unemployment, with 440 million new jobs needed by 2020, political leaders and key international bodies insisted Monday. International Monetary Fund director general Dominique StraussKahn, addressing a conference here, said he did not foresee another plunge into recession but warned that “there won’t be any end of the crisis before unemployment significantly decreases.” “Growth is very important ... but growth is not enough ... If you lose your job, you are more likely to suffer from health problems, or even die younger,” he said. “If you lose your job, your children are more likely to do worse in school. If you lose your job, you are less likely to have faith in public institutions and democracy.” The International Labour Organisation, which joined the IMF in sponsoring the conference, estimated that the global financial crisis had increased the number of jobless worldwide by about 34 million since 2007. The ILO said around 210 million people are today out of work and predicted that 440 million new jobs would be needed in the next decade to absorb increases in the working age population. “There is no other way than putting job creation at the center of macroeconomic policies,” argued ILO head Juan Somavia. “We cannot rely on the same policies that led us into the crisis.” While political leaders at the conference agreed that international
cooperation was critical in the fight against unemployment several of them argued for different approaches. Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez advocated professional training and investment in “green” initiatives. Greek counterpart George Papandreou stressed the need for “good governance” and a crackdown on tax evasion. Papandreou, whose country is struggling with a severe debt and deficit shortfall, said the absence of transparency in the Greek economy costs the state 20 billion euros (26 billion dollars) a year and deprives the country of around 200,000 jobs. French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde argued for apprenticeships and measures to help people start their own businesses. “A jobless recovery is no recovery,” she asserted. The president of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, warned that persistent mass unemployment had the potential of “undermining peace and stability.” Added Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, whose country has the lowest level of unemployment — 3.5 percent in June — among leading industrialised states: “If we succeed (in bringing) unemployment down, we will also bring growth up and bring budget deficits down.”

BEIJING - The head of China’s Geely has unveiled ambitious plans for the future of Volvo Cars, looking to nearly double global sales by pushing the Swedish brand in China, the world’s largest auto market. The Chinese carmaker completed the purchase of the struggling Volvo from US auto giant Ford last month — and now chairman Li Shufu is looking to cash in on his investment by selling up to 300,000 cars a year in China alone. “Our challenge is to get Volvo out of trouble,” Li said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. “From my perspective, Volvo’s product is already in very good demand and the company is profitable,” he told the newspaper. “Our real challenge is how we are going to evolve and develop the Volvo brand further.” Geely paid 1.5 billion dollars for Volvo, and said last month it also would invest a total of 900 million dollars in the brand, known for its sturdy, family-friendly ve-
hicles. Li said he hopes to build three Volvo assembly plants in China that would produce up to 300,000 autos a year — all to be sold in the Asian nation, which overtook the United States last year to become the world’s top auto market. Volvo sold about 335,000 cars worldwide last year, so Li’s plan would mean a near-doubling in sales. Building the three factories will require central government approval. Li confirmed in the interview that Geely and Volvo were looking at factory sites in Shanghai and the southwestern city of Chengdu. The third plant could be in the northeastern city of Daqing, Li told the paper. Manufacturing plants in Sweden and Belgium will be maintained, the company said last month. Volvo sold just 24,000 cars in China in 2009, and Li says he knows he needs to boost the brand’s “sophistication” to match up with competitors Mercedes and BMW, perhaps by developing new luxury models.

TOKYO - The yen hit a fresh 15-year high versus the dollar Tuesday after Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan won a party leadership election, making swift forex intervention unlikely, dealers said. The greenback sank to as low as 83.09 yen, its lowest against the Japanese unit since May 1995, before recovering to 83.40 against 83.61 yen in New York late Monday. It had previously hit a low of 83.33 on September 8. The euro edged down to 1.2872 dollars from 1.2880 in New York and fell to 107.27 yen from 107.82 yen. Japan’s centre-left Prime Minister Naoto Kan, in office for just three months, on Tuesday survived a leadership challenge from a veteran party powerbroker. The “son of a salaryman” premier was re-elected by his Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) as leader, meaning he stays on in his post after defeating party powerbroker Ichiro Ozawa, dubbed the “Shadow Shogun”. Under the DPJ’s complex voting formula, which gives different weight to lawmakers, local as-
sembly members and rank-and-file members, Kan won 721 points versus Ozawa’s 491, with three votes counted as invalid. Ozawa has been more outspoken in demanding action on the yen, and so some viewed Kan’s victory reducing the likelihood of faster intervention. “As Kan will continue as prime minister, the risk of further yen strength will continue,” as no change in forex policy is expected, said Toshihiko Sakai, senior dealer at Mitsubishi UFJ Trust & Banking. The strong yen is a threat to Japan’s fragile recovery and a disadvantage to exporters who can lose overseas profits when repatriated into the stronger domestic unit. Japan’s Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda reiterated Tuesday the government would maintain the policy of intervening in markets if necessary to curb the yen’s rise. “Regardless of the (party’s) presidential election, there will not be any political vacuum, and in accordance with our already-established policy we will take decisive steps, including intervention, when necessary,” he told reporters. Yen-dollar rates may move
short-term on the outcome of the election but the yen’s strength cannot be curbed over a longer term, said Hideaki Inoue, senior dealer at Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking. “It’s hard to imagine (the authorities) will step into markets under the current situation,” Inoue said, noting share prices were relatively stable and the yen was staying in the 80-84 range to the dollar. A fresh wave of investor confidence following new global banking regulations and strong Chinese economic data has seen increased demand for riskier assets, sending the dollar lower in recent sessions. The yen’s advance will not stop unless the US economy stages a faster-than-expected recovery to fuel expectations of higher interest rates there, Inoue said. The dollar was trading higher against most Asian currencies. It rose to 31.76 Taiwan dollars from 31.70, to 1,160.85 South Korean won from 1,160.80, to 44.20 Philippine pesos from 43.89 and to 8,957.50 Indonesian rupiah from 8,910.00. The greenback rose to 30.79 Thai baht from 30.72 but fell to 1.3369 Singaporean dollars from 1.3380.

MADRID – US actress Julia Roberts will receive a lifetime achievement award at the San Sebastian film festival which gets underway Friday in Spain with 15 movies in competition for the best movie award. The 42-year-old “Pretty Woman” star will collect an honorary “Donostia” — which means San Sebastian in the Basque language — on Monday, the fourth day of the nine-day festival. Roberts, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2001 for her role as a trash-talking environmental crusader in “Erin Brockovich”, will present her latest film “Eat Pray Love” that day alongside Spanish co-star Javier Bardem. “She has not limited herself to playing the beautiful girl, she has taken risks, she has made movies that break with the image of a romantic comedy to play mature roles like Erin Brockovich,” said festival director Mikel Olaciregui. Past recipients of the award include Meryl Streep, Richard Gere and Woody Allen. “Eat Pray Love”, based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s hit travel memoir of the same name, will be
screened out of competition at the festival, the oldest and most prestigious event of its kind in the Spanish speaking world. Among the movies in the race for the festival’s Golden Shell for best film is British director Peter Mullan’s “Neds”, a gritty look at gang culture in 1970s Glasgow. Japanese director Naomi Kawase’s “Genpin”, a feature documentary about natural childbirth, and US director John Sayles’ “Amigo” set during the American and Spanish occupation of the Philippines, are also in the running. SYDNEY - Australia paid 2.3 million US dollars to bring American megastar Oprah Winfrey with her famed chat show — and its screaming audience — to the country to boost its global profile, officials said Tuesday. Winfrey told an ecstatic American studio audience of 300 they would be flown to Australia to film episodes of her show during a tourist dash which would take in beaches, vineyards, Sydney Harbour and the city’s “Oprah” House. “We’ll sail Sydney Harbour, some will sample shiraz in Aussie wine country and others will shop till they drop in trendy Melbourne,” the chat show queen told the crowd. “We’ll get up close with kangaroos and koalas, kick back on some of the world’s most beautiful beaches and experience... the Great Barrier Reef.” Some of last episodes of the popular talk show, which is winding up after 25 seasons, will be shot during the eight-day adventure, culminating in recording at Sydney Opera House. MOSCOW – Russian explorers Monday said they had found a sailor’s log from aboard a legendary Arctic expedition that vanished as it sought to forge through the ice-choked Northeast Passage in 1912. For decades mystery clouded the fate of the adventurer Georgy Brusilov — captain of the first Russian crew to seek the elusive Arctic trade route from Asia to the West — inspiring a generation of books and films. But the famed voyagers’ remains and a journal — dated to May 1913 from aboard their vessel, the Saint Anna — were found this summer on the icy shores of Franz Josef Land, Europe’s northernmost land mass. “There is no doubt that the skeletons and notebook pages we found at the end of July on Franz Josef Land are the remains of Georgy Brusilov’s expedition — which were thought forever lost,” Oleg Prodan, who led the mission in the expedition’s footsteps, said. Midway into its epic journey along the Siberian coast, after navigating the perilous Vilkitsky Strait into the Kara Sea, the expedition ran aground on thick ice floes. One of its only two survivors,
navigator Valerian Albanov, described in his memoirs two gruelling winters clinging to the doomed ship and floating ever closer to the North Pole. Albanov was one of 11 of the 24member crew who abandoned the ice-locked vessel and set out across the snow drifts seeking firm land in a desperate trek romanced in Soviet author Veniamin Kaverin’s popular novel “Two Captains.” Until now, the Saint Anna and the rest of its crew had vanished without a trace. But pages of the sailor’s log, found well-preserved in the frigid north, offer glimpses into the lingering fight for survival aboard the ship. “Today we got our last brick of tobacco; the matches ran out long ago,” it reads, adding the crew hunted polar bear as they struggled on low supplies. Other traces of the ill-fated expedition were found nearby: a watch, snowshoes, a knife, a spoon engraved with a sailor’s initials and sunglasses made from the glass of empty rum bottles. “It was so overwhelming to find those sunglasses, which we had all been able to imagine so well after Albanov’s description,” missionmember Vladimir Melnikov said at a press conference in Moscow.

MILAN- AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri could not help casting an eye to the future to his team’s glamour ties against Real Madrid ahead of his personal Champions League bow on Wednesday. Milan host Auxerre in their first Group G match at the San Siro but with Real and Ajax also to contend with, Allegri was struggling to keep his mind on matters at hand. “Certainly, those are fascinating matches,” Allegri, speaking to UEFA.com, said of the upcoming Real clashes on October 19 and November 3. “At the same time, games like that give you the right mindset to tackle the Champions League from the very start.” One person Allegri is particularly looking forward to pitting his wits against is Madrid boss Jose Mourinho, who he knows well from the Portuguese’s time at Inter Milan. “Mourinho did very well in Italy but now he is at Real Madrid and we have to focus on Real and hope to get a good result,” added Allegri. “He is a coach who gives his team the right approach. He believes in his squad and knows how to motivate the players in the right way.” Allegri has come a long way to be lining up opposite Mourinho in the Champions League. When the self-styled ‘Special One’ was guiding Porto to the Champions League title in 2004, Allegri was beginning his first coaching job at Aglianese in the fourth tier of Italian football. But his rise has been rapid and following two seasons with Cagliari in Serie A, he was given

Bayern threaten to sue Dutch over Robben injury Agence France Presse BERLIN - Bayern Munich’s chairman has threatened to sue the Dutch Football Federation for compensation for a bad injury picked up by the German side’s star winger Arjen Robben in the World Cup. “If we don’t manage to come to a just and reasonable agreement with the Dutch, we will have no other choice but to launch legal proceedings against them and their team doctor,” Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told German television. Rummenigge said he wanted a “seven-figure” sum in compensation after Robben aggravated a torn muscle in his left thigh which he picked up helping the Dutch reach the final of the World Cup in South Africa in June and July. Robben, 26, voted best player in the Bundesliga last season, is not expected to play again for the Bavarian giants, currently languishing mid-table after a slow start to the season, until next year. Robben was first injured in a World Cup warm-up game on June 5 against Hungary, but remained in the Dutch squad despite tearing a muscle and eventually played in the tournament after intensive rehabilitation. “It was unreasonable to take him” to the World Cup, Rummenigge said on Bavarian channel BR on Monday evening. “It is the fault of the Dutch and the doctor alone.”

Nadal completes career Slam sweep with US Open crown Agence France Presse NEW YORK - World number one Rafael Nadal completed a career Grand Slam title sweep on Monday by capturing his first US Open crown, defeating Serbian third seed Novak Djokovic 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. The 24-year-old Spanish left-hander overwhelmed Djokovic with uncanny shotmaking to win the 1.7 million-dollar top prize as well as his third consecutive Grand Slam crown and his ninth Grand Slam title overall. Nadal became the seventh man to complete a career Grand Slam sweep, joining Roger Federer, Andre Agassi, Roy Emerson, Rod Laver, Don Budge and Fred Perry in having won Wimbledon and the US, French and Australian Open titles. “It’s a dream to have the career Grand Slam, but this is more dream to have the US Open,” Nadal said. “Is unbelievable feeling because I worked a lot all my life, in all the difficult moments, to be here but I never imagined having the four Grand Slams. “This one is very special to me because it was the last one remaining.” Showers pushed the final to Monday for the third year in a row and halted the match for one hour and 48 minutes, a rain delay that only delayed Nadal’s reign on the Flushing Meadows hardcourts. “For the first time in my career I played a very good match at this tournament,” Nadal said. “I played my best match in the US Open at the most important moment and I’m very happy for this.” A ninth Slam title moved Nadal alone into seventh on the all-time list — pssing Agassi, Perry, Ken Rosewall and Ivan Lendl and just seven shy of Federer’s all-time record, three ahead of Federer’s pace at the same age. “It’s too far - 16 for me, it’s too far right now,” Nadal said. “It’s the same (goal) - keep improving and

Nadal improved to 9-2 in Slam finals, his only losses coming to Federer at Wimbledon in 2006 and 2007, and 15-7 against Djokovic, who saved 20of-26 break points against him but could not combat Nadal’s relentless performance. set, the Spaniard spraying a backhand wide and netting a forehand to drop his only set of the tournament. “When he’s playing at his best he’s very difficult to stop,” Nadal said. Nadal responded with exceptional shotmaking in the third set, breaking Djokovic for a 2-1 lead. Djokovic fought off three break points in the fifth game and five more in the seventh, but Nadal held twice more to claim the third set and broke Djokovic in the third game of the fourth set to tighten his grip on victory. “There were some moments in the third and fourth sets where I dropped my focus a little bit and he took (the match) away from me and I never had a chance to get it back,” Djokovic said. Djokovic netted a forehand to hand Nadal a break and a 4-1 lead and when the speedy Serb missed a break chance when a forehand went long, his last gasp was done, Nadal holding twice more to make history. The magical moment came after three hours and 43 minutes when Djokovic hit a forehand wide. Nadal put his face in his hands and fell to the ground on his back, then rolled over and savored the moment. After receiving congratulations from Djokovic at the net, Nadal dropped to his knees on the court and raised his hands in victory. “It was an amazing feeling,” Nadal said. Djokovic surrendered a break on Nadal’s sixth break-point of the fifth game and held from there to take the set. Nadal was 107-1 in prior Grand Slam matches when winning the first set and 91-0 when taking the first two sets, arousing Djokovic’s urgency. Back injury forces Froch to postpone Abraham clash Agence France Presse LONDON - England’s former WBC super middleweight world champion Carl Froch’s eagerly awaited bout in the Super Six World Boxing Classic series with German pugilist Arthur Abraham was postponed on Monday because the Englishman has a back injury. The 33-year-old - nicknamed the Nottingham ‘Cobra’ - was set to fight the Armeniaborn Abraham in Monaco on October 2 but after suffering the injury last Friday he has been told he needs three weeks of complete rest. Capirossi ruled out of Aragon race MISANO - Loris Capirossi has been ruled out of this weekend’s MotoGP race at Aragon following his accident at Misano. The Suzuki rider injured his right hand in a crash with Nicky Hayden during the race, and had to undergo surgery to reconstruct the bone in his little finger and reattach a severed tendon. Although the surgery was successful, the Italian has been told he needs to continue to rest and will
therefore not be racing in Spain this weekend. The news means Alvaro Bautista will be the only Suzuki rider at Aragon. “I am extremely disappointed not to be racing at Aragon, but the surgeon has told me to rest the hand for another week,” said Capirossi. “I am still feeling a bit of pain and I’m going to the hospital every day to have the wound cleaned and dressed,
so although I could possibly be able to ride I wouldn’t be fit enough and it might jeopardise my attendance and competitiveness at Motegi if I did - so it’s best to stay at home. “I wish Alvaro all the best for the weekend and hope that he gets a good result for us - we certainly need one. I’ll be back for the trio of races next month and will be looking to get some good results at circuits where I know we can go well.”

However, with title rival Lewis Hamilton crashing out, Sebastian Vettel’s fourth place and Mark Webber’s sixth were enough for it to actually improve its situation in both championships. And Horner believes that the outcome was much better than his team could have hoped for - which has put it in a good situation for tracks coming up that should suit its car. “Monza for us represented our biggest challenge and the fact we have come out and outscored McLaren as a team is massively positive,” said Horner. “There are tracks that should suit us, tracks that should be a bit more marginal between teams but hopefully not offset all our strengths.” Although Webber was frustrated after the race, having lost a chance to beat Vettel after losing time behind Nico Hulkenberg’s Williams, Horner said the Australian should be ultimately happy with the impact the race had on the title standings. “He was frustrated he didn’t get more out of the race, particularly losing so much time behind Hulkenberg. But looking at the championship points on the way home, closing the European season as leader of the championship is a strong performance from him.” Horner also said that he was not too unhappy at seeing Hamilton throw away a great opportunity to stamp his authority on the title standings. “You never like to see a competitor retire but I don’t think there were too many tears in the Red Bull garage,” he said about Hamilton’s first lap exit. The only concern for Red Bull Racing, said Horner, was that its starts had once again not been very good - which had proved very costly on the first lap of the race. “We need to look at it quite carefully because our starts at the beginning of the year were quite strong,” he explained. “Over the last couple of races we have lost a bit of performance on the start-line.”
