LONDON - Sixteen-year-old singer Imani, who gained fame when she featured on British DJ Sigala’s dance hit “Say You Do” earlier this year, says she is eyeing an album and tour next after releasing her debut single last month.
Organic farming should become the future direction of agricultural development in Bali. However, some obstacles must be faced to achieve it, starting from the persistence of farmers’ dependence on pesticides to the unavailability of organic ingredients as replacement of such chemicals. “To build the future of agriculture, apparently it has to lead to organic agriculture or at least to healthy plants. The main constraint lies in irrigation because farmers in the upstream remain to use pesticides. Automatically the water flow to downstream area is affected by the pesticides,” said a farmer from Kekeran hamlet, Selanbawak, Marga, Tabanan, I Wayan Atmajaya.
The teenager, who cites music stars Justin Bieber, Beyonce and rapper Tinie Tempah as her inspirations, wrote her first song at the age of 10. “(In) five years’ time ... Violent protests erupt in Milwaukee after police kill armed suspect
MILWAUKEE - Protesters fired gunshots, hurled bricks and set a gas station on fire in the U.S. mid-western city of Milwaukee on Saturday night, hours after a patrol officer shot and killed an armed suspect who took flight after a traffic stop, authorities said. The 23-year-old suspect, who had a lengthy arrest record, was carrying a stolen handgun loaded with 23 rounds of ammunition when police pulled over the vehicle for unspecified “suspicious activity,” authorities said. A second suspect who fled from the vehicle was quickly taken into custody. A statement by the Milwaukee Police Department did not say whether the suspect who was killed had fired any shots or pointed the weapon at officers during the incident. Authorities did not disclose
the race or the name of the suspect or the uniformed officer. Later, a crowd of more than 100 people in the predominately African-American section of the city where the shooting occurred hurled rocks as police officers in riot gear attempted to disperse the protesters. Authorities said gunshots were fired during the disturbance. The windows of at least two squad cars were smashed, and one officer sitting inside one of the vehicles was hit in the head with a brick. and fires broke out at gas station, an auto parts store and at least three other businesses, officials and local media reported. “Our city is in turmoil tonight,” said Alderman Ashanti Hamilton, president of the Milwaukee Common Council. Mayor Tom Barrett appealed for calm. “This is a neighborhood that has been unfortunately affected by violence in the recent past,” Barrett said, referring to a smaller disturbance a month earlier. “There are a lot of really, really good people who live in this area ... and can’t stand this violence.” The unrest follows peaceful protests and some violence in U.S. cities over the past two years following high-profile killings by
law enforcement officers in Baltimore, New York and Ferguson, Missouri. Outrage over police violence toward minority groups has given rise to the Black Lives Matter movement and touched off a national debate over the race issue and policing in the United States. “This is a warning cry,” Milwaukee Alderman Khalif Rainey said. “Black people of Milwaukee are tired. They are tired of living under this oppression.” As of 1 a.m. Central time (0600 GMT), police said three arrests had been made in connection with the unrest. Shortly after 2 a.m. police said they were restoring order to the area and reducing deployments, but local news footage also showed a liquor
store in flames just minutes before the release of the statement. The officer involved in the shooting is 24 years old and a sixyear veteran of the force, police said. A soldier’s wife becoming shrimp farmer
Wandering moose inspires 400-mile cross-border trail
NEWCOMB — The 400-mile trek of a radio-collared moose named Alice is the inspiration for a proposed hiking trail from Ontario’s forested Algonquin Park to the heart of New York’s Adirondack Mountains. Planners of the A2A — Algonquin to Adirondack — Trail liken it to Spain’s famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, with the added benefit of preserving an important wildlife migration corridor between two vast wilderness regions. “This is one of last great migration routes. It’s an area where wildlife can regenerate itself,” said Emily Conger, chair of the trail committee for the A2A Collaborative, the Ontario-based nonprofit conservation group behind the project. Still in the planning stage with
no definite route, the A2A will combine existing trails and roads following the general track taken by Alice, a moose radio-collared by New York wildlife workers in 1998 and released in a remote forest area in the central Adirondack town of Newcomb. For two years, researchers tracked Alice as she swam across lakes, traversed the U.S. Army’s Fort Drum, swam the St. Lawrence River and loped across Canada’s busy Highway 401 before eventually reaching the 3,000-square-mile Algonquin Park, where she died of unknown causes. Her remains were found in 2001. “We want to create a trail system that is not only a destination, but also elevates the concept of wildlife corridors and connectivity of landscapes,” said Sarah Walsh, with New York’s Department of
Environmental Conservation who serves privately as A2A’s volunteer president. “People will be able to experience the way Alice made this journey.” The Adirondack section of the trail will most likely start in Newcomb at the Adirondack Interpretive Center, a nature center where the College of Environmental Science and Forestry tracked Alice. From there, it will meander through hardwood and evergreen forest interspersed with bogs, streams and lakes. A tentative plan includes 192 miles of existing hiking trails, 56 miles of rail-trail, 60 miles of main roads and 115 miles of back roads. Coordinators plan to engage communities along the route to provide amenities for trail-walkers. Conger envisions something similar to the 375-mile stretch of the Camino de Santiago trail in
Spain that she walked in 2014, starting in the rugged Pyrenees and traveling through villages, vineyards, farms and forests. Along the way, pilgrims were welcomed into cafes, shops and inns in communities that had a thriving tourist industry because of the trail. “The A2A can bring a similar economic boost for small towns in northern New York and eastern Ontario,” Conger said. A series of trail-promoting events is in the works along the Canadian section starting this fall, with a goal of seeing the full route completed in five years, Conger said. Neil Woodworth, executive director of the Adirondack Mountain Club, which has been building and maintaining trails in the region for more than 90 years, said the A2A Trail is feasible but will take
considerable resources. The club hasn’t been asked to work on the A2A, but for the next few years, Woodworth said his organization is committed to building the Adirondack leg of the 4,600-mile North Country National Scenic Trail that stretches from North Dakota to Lake Champlain. Walsh concedes that the A2A Trail has many obstacles outside the park boundaries, but the organization will work with civic groups, greenways, land trusts and others to design a route that communities will embrace. She said the Appalachian Trail, maintained by 31 trail clubs and many partnerships from Georgia to Maine, provides inspiration. “It took decades to complete the Appalachian Trail,” she said. “We’ve only been working on this for less than two years.” (ap)

After getting up early to accomplish household works, she then resumes to handle fish farming, paddy fields and manages their two fishing boats at Pengambengan. The mother of Putu Sonia Rotama currently taking master degree at the Faculty of Law, Brawijaya University and I Made Juan Alvis still attending school at the SMAN 1 Negara high school just wants to help her husband in the welfare of family. According to her, the husband and wife are a team that must support each other. The business pioneered by Ni Made Krisnayani was started when she married in 1992 after graduating from high school with Nengah Suwenia who was on duty at the Battalion Cavalry III Serbu Singosari, Malang. Then, her husband moved to the IX/ Udayana Military Command Implementer in 2006. They live separately, where her husband is in Denpasar while she herself at Terusan, Lelateng, Negara. Considering their life struggle with two children is increasingly severe, let alone they live separately that must supply two kitchens, Krisnayani started thinking to help her husband earn a living. She then helped her parents in the cultivation of shrimp farming. This second daughter of four children of the couple Wayan Sukarta and Ni Ketut Arini when her husband moved for his duty to the 1617/Jembrana District Military Commenced started the business of shrimp farming and tried independently. After that, they bought a piece of land with the area of 0.5 hectares at Lelateng, Negara. Armed with the talent of her husband having the experience of working at shrimp farming prior to becoming a soldier, they are motivated to use extra time to manage the shrimp farming. Finally, they enjoyed the results and could send their daughter to college and attending master degree program. According to Krisnayani, the shrimp farming business is pretty good and even begins to expand their business to agriculture by cultivating 0.75 hectare of paddy fields. They grow rice and other crops. To that end, they can meet the needs of family. Krisnayani told that the average income of the shrimp farming business with an initial capital of IDR 40

She said that in 2014 their shrimp farming failed as attacked by redtailed virus so that they suffered losses worth IDR 30 million. At that time, the price plummeted. In 2010 to 2013 the price of shrimp penetrated IDR 46,000 to IDR 56,000 per kg (size 100), but in 2014 the price dropped to IDR 39,000 per kg. “So, at that time we could not achieve the target and suffered losses in operating cost. Nevertheless, we did not give up and despair. We were trying to continuously seek a breakthrough and rise again,” she said. Shrimp farming is a promising business for a year and she gets twice harvest a year with a total of IDR 30 million net profit. In addition to the shrimp farming business and agriculture, Krisnayani also runs two fishing boats by employing four fishermen. Fishermen catch sardine and other fish with an average production of 1.5 tons per day and a minimum of 400 kg for once delivery. Krisnayani handles her business in person and even does not hesitate to hoe and feed the fish. She makes collaboration with her parents. If her husband has free time, they will work together. Her husband always sleeps at the shrimp farming pond to keep it every night. “Most importantly, my husband can still serve with a maximum performance at the office and our business may not to affect him. He remains a good soldier. So, I must manage it in person,” said Krisnayani. Krisnayani just hoped what she does can inspire the wife of his colleagues so that they will not stand idly let alone rely on the husband’s income. With the potential owned by each individual, every wife can help their husband to attain family welfare. “We’re trying to be a self-contained soldier’s wife,” she said. (wit)
Gung Aji, one of the farmers at Subak Bergiding, said on Friday (Aug. 12) that as a result of the vicious mouse attack most farmers finally neglected their paddy fields because they reasoned to no longer have working capital as well as seeds. Almost all rice crops have been attacked by mice since they are three weeks old. The plants whose stem should have begun to multiply are then bitten by mice and the attack take place rampantly up to these days. “The mice are gobbling rice straw and all the existing plants in the middle of paddy field and nothing is left, while the remaining plants are those in the rows on the edge of the embankment. More
severely, the plants at each end of the fields are not left,” he said. He said the mouse attacks have started to rage since the presence of piles of brick material near the paddy fields. As planned, the material will be used for drinking water project, but it is still problematic. The material is left alone and overgrown by bushes, so that it becomes a nest of mice and snakes. “We very much hope the investor having the material to immediately remove it, so as not to become a comfortable place for mice. Otherwise, mouse attacks will continue to rage so that farmers continue to suffer losses,” he said. Complaint about the existence of the material has been repeatedly
delivered to the owner, but there is no response. “We hope the relevant agencies to intervene, so that investor having the material has a good faith to remove and clean up the place,” he said. Chief of Subak Bergiding, Made Sukarta, asserted that the mouse attacks have been very detrimental to farmers and increasingly violent. “The piles of the material make mice continuously proliferate. We have asked the owner of the material to immediately clean it up, so that mice will no longer nest in the area. JAKARTA - A Western Fleet Quick Response (WFQR) team of the Indonesian Navy detained an alleged pirate who was robbing the Ad Matsu tanker of Singapore, on Belakang Padang Island, Batam, Riau Islands, on Friday evening. The alleged pirate was identified as Henry Alfree Bakari Bin Hengki, First Admiral Edi Sucipto, spokesman of the Indonesian Navy, said in a press statement, here Saturday. Henry had been jailed earlier for illegal possession of ammunition, Sucipto said. Recently, he and his five colleagues, aboard a speed boat departing from Tanjung Berakit, Bintan, Riau Islands, had pirated a Singaporeflagged MT Ad Matsu, off Aur Isle. July’s unchanged retail sales reading followed an upwardly revised 0.8 percent increase in June, the Commerce Department said. Retail sales in June were previously reported to have increased 0.6 percent. Sales rose 2.3 percent from a year ago. Motor vehicle sales increased 1.1 percent last month. Rising demand for autos is pulling spending away from discretionary items, including sporting goods, whose sales in July suffered their biggest drop since January 2015. Excluding automobiles, gasoline, building materials and food services, retail sales were also unchanged last month after rising 0.5 percent in June. These so-called core retail sales correspond most closely with the consumer spending component of gross domestic product. Economists had forecast overall retail sales rising 0.4 percent and core sales climbing 0.3 percent last month. Some cautioned against reading too much into the July data, citing a labor market that is at or near full employment, and said they expected sales to bounce back in August. “You have had two months of very strong job growth. It just seems very odd that spending would be weak. I will wait for the revisions before declaring July retail spending means anything more than random volatility,” said Steve Blitz, chief economist at M Science in New York. U.S. Treasuries were trading higher on the data, while the dollar fell against a basket of currencies. U.S. stocks were little changed as the impact of rising oil prices offset the weak data. BEIJING - Indonesias National Narcotics Agency (BNN) said it will place a representative at Chinas National Narcotics Control Commission(NNCC), to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the fight against illegal drug trafficking. “We will assign a representative at NNCC and the Chinese agency will have one at BNN to make more effective implementation of cooperation, which has been underway between the two agencies since 2012,” BNNs chief Budi Waseso told ANTARA here on Saturday. Budi said BNN and NNCC have agreed to open training to promote capability in battling illegal drug trade with modern equipment. He said cooperation between BNN and NNCC has succeeded in foiling big case of dug smuggling from China to Indonesia. Therefore, cooperation through exchange of intelligence information between the two agencies would be strengthened through the assignment of representative, Budi said. He said China has been a major gate for the supply of illegal drugs to Indonesia, by air or sea. Illegal drug trade has been rife involving Chinese and Indonesians of Chinese extraction in Indonesia, he said. BNN also plan to place a representative in Hong Kong to establish cooperation with Hong Kongs Police Narcotics Bureau, he said. He said Hong Kong is a potential transit place for illegal drugs to be smuggled to Indonesia utilizing Indonesian migrant workers there as couriers. BNN will promoted cooperation , which has been underway over the past years with Hong Kongs Police Narcotic Bureau, to exchange intelligence information. Hong Kongs police have also offered assistance in the form of training for Indonesian officers in coping with crime in money laundering. Six injured in attack on Swiss train; motive unknown, police say
ZURICH - Six people were injured in an attack aboard a Swiss train on Saturday by a man armed with a knife and flammable fluid, St Gallen cantonal police said. Three adults, two teenagers and a child aged six were hurt, according to a police statement. Five were stabbed or burnt. A sixth suffered smoke inhalation as he came to the aid of the others. The assailant, a Swiss citizen, was also injured. “According to current information, a 27-year-old Swiss man poured out a flammable liquid. He was also armed with at least one knife. FAIRFIELD - U.S. Republican Donald Trump on Saturday repeated his attack on President Barack Obama that he helped “found” Islamic State and railed against media reports that his campaign is failing, at a campaign rally in Connecticut, a state where he has a long-shot of being victorious. Luan added the second in the 83rd at the Arena Corinthians with a shot from outside the area, keeping alive Brazil’s hopes of winning the soccer gold medal for the first time. The game, a sort of rematch from the 2014 World Cup quarterfinals, was heated from the start, with hard fouls from both teams. Lineker presents soccer show in shorts only after bet
LONDON — Former England striker Gary Lineker presented the start of Britain’s best-known soccer show wearing only a pair of white shorts, after a bet he made last season about Leicester City’s chances of winning the Premier League. Millions of BBC TV viewers watched as Lineker introduced the first Match of the Day of the new season on Saturday night. His only clothing looked like a pair of boxer shorts with a Leicester logo — one of Lineker’s former clubs. Last December, when Leicester had surprisingly led the standings after narrowly avoiding relegation the previous season, Lineker tweeted “YES! If Leicester win the @premierleague I’ll do the first MOTD of next season in just my undies.” Leicester went on to defy preseason odds of 5,000-1 to win the title in one of the biggest upsets in sports.
Fifteen minutes before the show started on BBC One, Lineker tweeted “this is strangely terrifying”. When the Leicester game finished and the show returned to the studio, Lineker remained stripped in his chair. However, he reappeared shortly afterward fully dressed. (ap)

Six injured in attack on Swiss train; motive unknown, police say
ZURICH - Six people were injured in an attack aboard a Swiss train on Saturday by a man armed with a knife and flammable fluid, St Gallen cantonal police said. Three adults, two teenagers and a child aged six were hurt, according to a police statement. Five were stabbed or burnt. A sixth suffered smoke inhalation as he came to the aid of the others. The assailant, a Swiss citizen, was also injured. “According to current information, a 27-year-old Swiss man poured out a flammable liquid. He was also armed with at least one knife. The liquid caught fire,” the statement said. Authorities did not yet know the motive for the attacks but a crime of passion was one possibility, Bruno

FAIRFIELD - U.S. Republican Donald Trump on Saturday repeated his attack on President Barack Obama that he helped “found” Islamic State and railed against media reports that his campaign is failing, at a campaign rally in Connecticut, a state where he has a long-shot of being victorious. Speaking for more than an hour in a sweltering room, Trump spent a significant portion of his speech complaining about the media. He again threatened to revoke the press credentials of The New York Times. The credentials allow reporters access to press-only areas of his campaign events. He has already banned other outlets, including The Washington Post. On Saturday, the New York newspaper published an article detailing failed efforts to make Trump focus his campaign on the general election. “These are the most dishonest people,” Trump said. “Maybe we’ll start thinking about taking their press credentials away from them.” Trump visiting Connecticut, a heavily Democratic state, raised eyebrows among many Republicans. “It’s asinine that he would be in Connecticut holding a public rally less than 90 days before the
election,” said Republican strategist Matt Mackowiak. “You don’t see Hillary publicly campaigning in Idaho and Mississippi. JAKARTA - A Western Fleet Quick Response (WFQR) team of the Indonesian Navy detained an alleged pirate who was robbing the Ad Matsu tanker of Singapore, on Belakang Padang Island, Batam, Riau Islands, on Friday evening. The alleged pirate was identified as Henry Alfree Bakari Bin Hengki, First Admiral Edi Sucipto, spokesman of the Indonesian Navy, said in a press statement, here Saturday. Henry had been jailed earlier for illegal possession of ammunition, Sucipto said. Recently, he and his five colleagues, aboard a speed boat departing from Tanjung Berakit, Bintan, Riau Islands, had pirated a Singaporeflagged MT Ad Matsu, off Aur Isle. As the boat’s helmsman, Henry got US$100 and Rp500 thousand as his share from the piracy. “The Indonesian Navy is still looking for the other pirates,” the naval officer said.(ant)

The U.S. central bank raised its benchmark overnight interest rate last December for the first time in nearly a decade. Although a Reuters poll on Thursday found that most economists expect another rate increase in December, financial markets currently anticipate such a move only next year. Interest rate futures after Friday’s data placed only a 43 percent probability of a December rate hike, compared to 47 percent before the data. Robust consumer spending has helped to cushion the blow on the economy from an inventory correction and the prolonged drag from lower oil prices that have restricted GDP growth to an average 1.0 percent annualized rate in the last three quarters. While Friday’s data suggested consumer spending was cooling after the second quarter’s brisk 4.2 percent rate of increase, economists still expected growth in consumption to top a 2.5 percent pace in the current quarter. A third report showed consumer sentiment was stable in early August, though households’ views on income softened a bit. Most of the weakness was among younger households who cited higher expenses than anticipated, according to the University of Michigan’s preliminary consumer sentiment survey. Americans are facing rising rents and healthcare costs. Following the retail sales report, the Atlanta Fed lowered its third-quarter GDP growth estimate by two-tenths of a percentage point to a 3.5 percent rate. Growth is expected to be driven by a rebound in inventory investment, as well as consumer spending. A fourth report from the Commerce Department showed businesses made significant progress in June in their efforts to reduce an inventory overhang that has weighed on economic growth since the second quarter of 2015. July’s unchanged retail sales reading followed an upwardly revised 0.8 percent increase in June, the Commerce Department said. Retail sales in June were previously reported to have increased 0.6 percent. Sales rose 2.3 percent from a year ago. Motor vehicle sales increased 1.1 percent last month. Rising demand for autos is pulling spending away from discretionary items, including sporting goods, whose sales in July suffered their biggest drop since January 2015. Excluding automobiles, gasoline, building materials and food services, retail sales were also unchanged last month after rising 0.5 percent in June. These so-called core retail sales correspond most closely with the consumer spending component of gross domestic product. Economists had forecast overall retail sales rising 0.4 percent and core sales climbing 0.3 percent last month. Some cautioned against reading too much into the July data, citing a labor market that is at or near full employment, and said they expected sales to bounce back in August. “You have had two months of very strong job growth. It just seems very odd that spending would be weak. I will wait for the revisions before declaring July retail spending means anything more than random volatility,” said Steve Blitz, chief economist at M Science in New York. U.S. Treasuries were trading higher on the data, while the dollar fell against a basket of currencies. U.S. stocks were little changed as the impact of rising oil prices offset the weak data. BEIJING - Indonesias National Narcotics Agency (BNN) said it will place a representative at Chinas National Narcotics Control Commission(NNCC), to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the fight against illegal drug trafficking. “We will assign a representative at NNCC and the Chinese agency will have one at BNN to make more effective implementation of cooperation, which has been underway between the two agencies since 2012,” BNNs chief Budi Waseso told ANTARA here on Saturday. Budi said BNN and NNCC have agreed to open training to promote capability in battling illegal drug trade with modern equipment. He said cooperation between BNN and NNCC has succeeded in foiling big case of dug smuggling from China to Indonesia. Therefore, cooperation through exchange of intelligence information between the two agencies would be strengthened through the assignment of representative, Budi said. He said China has been a major gate for the supply of illegal drugs to Indonesia, by air or sea. Illegal drug trade has been rife involving Chinese and Indonesians of Chinese extraction in Indonesia, he said. BNN also plan to place a representative in Hong Kong to establish cooperation with Hong Kongs Police Narcotics Bureau, he said. He said Hong Kong is a potential transit place for illegal drugs to be smuggled to Indonesia utilizing Indonesian migrant workers there as couriers. BNN will promoted cooperation , which has been underway over the past years with Hong Kongs Police Narcotic Bureau, to exchange intelligence information. Hong Kongs police have also offered assistance in the form of training for Indonesian officers in coping with crime in money laundering. Wandering moose inspires 400-mile cross-border trail
NEWCOMB — The 400-mile trek of a radio-collared moose named Alice is the inspiration for a proposed hiking trail from Ontario’s forested Algonquin Park to the heart of New York’s Adirondack Mountains. Planners of the A2A — Algonquin to Adirondack — Trail liken it to Spain’s famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, with the added benefit of preserving an important wildlife migration corridor between two vast wilderness regions. “This is one of last great migration routes. It’s an area where wildlife can regenerate itself,” said Emily Conger, chair of the trail committee for the A2A Collaborative, the Ontario-based nonprofit conservation group behind the project. Still in the planning stage with
no definite route, the A2A will combine existing trails and roads following the general track taken by Alice, a moose radio-collared by New York wildlife workers in 1998 and released in a remote forest area in the central Adirondack town of Newcomb. For two years, researchers tracked Alice as she swam across lakes, traversed the U.S. Army’s Fort Drum, swam the St. Lawrence River and loped across Canada’s busy Highway 401 before eventually reaching the 3,000-square-mile Algonquin Park, where she died of unknown causes. Her remains were found in 2001. “We want to create a trail system that is not only a destination, but also elevates the concept of wildlife corridors and connectivity of landscapes,” said Sarah Walsh, with New York’s Department of
Environmental Conservation who serves privately as A2A’s volunteer president. “People will be able to experience the way Alice made this journey.” The Adirondack section of the trail will most likely start in Newcomb at the Adirondack Interpretive Center, a nature center where the College of Environmental Science and Forestry tracked Alice. From there, it will meander through hardwood and evergreen forest interspersed with bogs, streams and lakes. A tentative plan includes 192 miles of existing hiking trails, 56 miles of rail-trail, 60 miles of main roads and 115 miles of back roads. Coordinators plan to engage communities along the route to provide amenities for trail-walkers. Conger envisions something similar to the 375-mile stretch of the Camino de Santiago trail in
Spain that she walked in 2014, starting in the rugged Pyrenees and traveling through villages, vineyards, farms and forests. Along the way, pilgrims were welcomed into cafes, shops and inns in communities that had a thriving tourist industry because of the trail. “The A2A can bring a similar economic boost for small towns in northern New York and eastern Ontario,” Conger said. A series of trail-promoting events is in the works along the Canadian section starting this fall, with a goal of seeing the full route completed in five years, Conger said. Neil Woodworth, executive director of the Adirondack Mountain Club, which has been building and maintaining trails in the region for more than 90 years, said the A2A Trail is feasible but will take
considerable resources. The club hasn’t been asked to work on the A2A, but for the next few years, Woodworth said his organization is committed to building the Adirondack leg of the 4,600-mile North Country National Scenic Trail that stretches from North Dakota to Lake Champlain. Walsh concedes that the A2A Trail has many obstacles outside the park boundaries, but the organization will work with civic groups, greenways, land trusts and others to design a route that communities will embrace. She said the Appalachian Trail, maintained by 31 trail clubs and many partnerships from Georgia to Maine, provides inspiration. “It took decades to complete the Appalachian Trail,” she said. “We’ve only been working on this for less than two years.” (ap)

Then, her husband moved to the IX/ Udayana Military Command Implementer in 2006. They live separately, where her husband is in Denpasar while she herself at Terusan, Lelateng, Negara. Considering their life struggle with two children is increasingly severe, let alone they live separately that must supply two kitchens, Krisnayani started thinking to help her husband earn a living. She then helped her parents in the cultivation of shrimp farming. This second daughter of four children of the couple Wayan Sukarta and Ni Ketut Arini when her husband moved for his duty to the 1617/Jembrana District Military Commenced started the business of shrimp farming and tried independently. After that, they bought a piece of land with the area of 0.5 hectares at Lelateng, Negara. Armed with the talent of her husband having the experience of working at shrimp farming prior to becoming a soldier, they are motivated to use extra time to manage the shrimp farming. Shrimp farming is a promising business for a year and she gets twice harvest a year with a total of IDR 30 million net profit. In addition to the shrimp farming business and agriculture, Krisnayani also runs two fishing boats by employing four fishermen. Fishermen catch sardine and other fish with an average production of 1.5 tons per day and a minimum of 400 kg for once delivery. Krisnayani handles her business in person and even does not hesitate to hoe and feed the fish. She makes collaboration with her parents. If her husband has free time, they will work together. Her husband always sleeps at the shrimp farming pond to keep it every night. “Most importantly, my husband can still serve with a maximum performance at the office and our business may not to affect him. He remains a good soldier. So, I must manage it in person,” said Krisnayani. Krisnayani just hoped what she does can inspire the wife of his colleagues so that they will not stand idly let alone rely on the husband’s income. With the potential owned by each individual, every wife can help their husband to attain family welfare. “We’re trying to be a self-contained soldier’s wife,” she said. (wit)

Organic farming should become the future direction of agricultural development in Bali. However, some obstacles must be faced to achieve it, starting from the persistence of farmers’ dependence on pesticides to the unavailability of organic ingredients as replacement of such chemicals. “To build the future of agriculture, apparently it has to lead to organic agriculture or at least to healthy plants. The main constraint lies in irrigation because farmers in the upstream remain to use pesticides. Violent protests erupt in Milwaukee after police kill armed suspect
MILWAUKEE - Protesters fired gunshots, hurled bricks and set a gas station on fire in the U.S. mid-western city of Milwaukee on Saturday night, hours after a patrol officer shot and killed an armed suspect who took flight after a traffic stop, authorities said. The 23-year-old suspect, who had a lengthy arrest record, was carrying a stolen handgun loaded with 23 rounds of ammunition when police pulled over the vehicle for unspecified “suspicious activity,” authorities said. A second suspect who fled from the vehicle was quickly taken into custody. A statement by the Milwaukee Police Department did not say whether the suspect who was killed had fired any shots or pointed the weapon at officers during the incident. Authorities did not disclose
the race or the name of the suspect or the uniformed officer. Later, a crowd of more than 100 people in the predominately African-American section of the city where the shooting occurred hurled rocks as police officers in riot gear attempted to disperse the protesters. Authorities said gunshots were fired during the disturbance. The windows of at least two squad cars were smashed, and one officer sitting inside one of the vehicles was hit in the head with a brick. and fires broke out at gas station, an auto parts store and at least three other businesses, officials and local media reported. “Our city is in turmoil tonight,” said Alderman Ashanti Hamilton, president of the Milwaukee Common Council. Mayor Tom Barrett appealed for calm. “This is a neighborhood that has been unfortunately affected by violence in the recent past,” Barrett said, referring to a smaller disturbance a month earlier. “There are a lot of really, really good people who live in this area ... and can’t stand this violence.” The unrest follows peaceful protests and some violence in U.S. cities over the past two years following high-profile killings by
law enforcement officers in Baltimore, New York and Ferguson, Missouri. Outrage over police violence toward minority groups has given rise to the Black Lives Matter movement and touched off a national debate over the race issue and policing in the United States. “This is a warning cry,” Milwaukee Alderman Khalif Rainey said. “Black people of Milwaukee are tired. They are tired of living under this oppression.” As of 1 a.m. Central time (0600 GMT), police said three arrests had been made in connection with the unrest. Shortly after 2 a.m. police said they were restoring order to the area and reducing deployments, but local news footage also showed a liquor
store in flames just minutes before the release of the statement. The officer involved in the shooting is 24 years old and a sixyear veteran of the force, police said.
