LOS ANGELES - Hollywood stars have chorused support for Hillary Clinton’s US presidential campaign, indicating Tinseltown will be firmly behind the former first lady as she targets the White House. Within hours of Clinton confirming her plans to stand in 2016, celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Scarlett Johansson and Magic Johnson gave a stamp of approval to her bid to become the first female commander-in-chief. “I’m very excited by the news,” singer Jennifer Lopez was quoted as saying by Eonline at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles. “I think it’s time for a woman (president)” she added. Basketball legend Johnson, a staunch Democrat, meanwhile took to Twitter to give his support. “I feel @HillaryClinton will be a great President for the American people and she will make sure that everyone has a voice!” Johnson said. “ @ HillaryClinton will fight for the poor, middle class and embrace young people!” Actress Johansson meanwhile suggested Clinton would be battlehardened and more prepared for a second tilt at the White House following her bruising battle with Barack Obama for the Democratic ticket in 2008. “It’s very exciting to see Hillary,” Johansson said. “Now is the right time. NEW YORK — For the first time, a female director will kick off the Cannes Film Festival. The festival announced Monday that “La Tete Haute,” a French drama directed by Emmanuelle Bercot, will open the 68th Cannes Film Festival on May 13. The film is about the upbringing of a juvenile delinquent and stars Catherine Deneuve. The French Riviera festival has sometimes been criticized for not programming more
female-directed films. Cannes head Thierry Fremaux said the choice “is a clear reflection of our desire to see the festival start with a different piece, which is both bold and moving.” Joel and Ethan Coen will preside over this year’s jury. The film slate will be announced Thursday, adding to the already announced out-of-competition entry “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Cannes runs May 13-24. (ap)

He asserted that Balinese people are not allergic to investors who want to support the development of tourism here. However, potential investors must abide by the concept of Tri Hita Karana (three causes of happiness) to realize harmony in life. In addition, investors must adhere to Regional Bylaws (Perda) on Cultural Tourism (inspired by the noble values of Hinduism), to the
provincial spatial plan (RTRWP) for Bali, as well as to county or municipal spatial plans. “In principle, we do not reject the presence of investors wishing to build in Bali, but the investors must build with an emphasis on equitable development, and development spread across all regions, not just concentrated in South Bali,” he added. South Bali is already overcapacity, and this fact raises many issues. Anom is adament that the government issued moratorium on
further construction in South Bali, must be judicially implemented by the government’s executive branch, with the consent of the legislative, as decision makers of public policy. “The People’s representatives must carefully absorb and implement the aspirations of all levels of society”. “Currently the people of Bali are awaiting the confirmation of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), who won the election, to see if they will reject or approve the Benoa Bay reclamation plan,” he said. The party with the bull’s head logo will likely be advising the president regarding strategic policies, particularly public policy that concerns the public sector.
“Certainty and assertiveness are required by Bali’s Council of Regional Representatives of the House of Representatives, the Bali House, and Regents and Mayor across Bali, regarding whether they accept or reject the Benoa Bay reclamation project, especially if they plan on running in the next elections,” said Anom, the academic from Kapal village, Mengwi-Badung. However, the shipwrecks formerly serving the crossing of Padangbai-Lembar (Lombok) still leaves a problem because the debris of the burning ship in the sea has not been totally cleaned up. Winastra even gave the opportunity of one month until May 6, 2015. Otherwise, the cleanup will be taken over by relevant agencies in accordance with prevailing regulations. “Where else we report this matter other than to the regent. Then, we will ask the local government to help clean up if the UD Kurnia is unable to do it,” said Winastra.

All passengers survived in the incident. In addition, there were 13 large trucks and 8 medium buses and

Debris that still left scattered around the Karangdadi Beach protested by the people of Kusamba. Headman of Kusamba, I Ketut Winastra, when asked for his confirmation on Tuesday admitted receives many complaints from residents related to the debris of burning Gelis Rauh that has not been cleaned up. According to Winastra, the UD Kurnia dismantling the ship has promised to clean up the debris of the Gelis Rauh passenger ship within three months starting from November 26, 2014 through February 26, 2015. The promise was even delivered by one of the laborers of the UD Kurnia named I Gusti Ngurah Agung in the meeting held in the office of the headman on November 26. The meeting was attended by subdistrict head of Dawan, subdistrict police chief, military region commander, headman and chief of Karangdadi customary village and Pesurungan, Kusamba village. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

IBM teams with Apple on artificial intelligence health program SAN FRANSISCO - IBM on Monday announced alliances with Apple and others to put artificial intelligence to work drawing potentially life-saving insights from the booming amount of health data generated on personal devices.
IBM is collaborating with Apple, Medtronic, and Johnson & Johnson to use its Watson artificial intelligence system to give users insights and advice from personal health information gathered from fitness trackers, smartphones, implants or other devices. PC sales declined again in first quarter SAN JOSE — Weak demand for desktop computers caused PC sales to plunge again in the first quarter of this year, reflecting the industry’s ongoing struggles with the shift to smartphones, tablets and other mobile gadgets. One big reason for the decline was businesses buying fewer desktop computers, according to the Gartner research firm. It noted companies have mostly finished replacing older PCs that used outdated Windows XP software. PC sales may get a boost later this year when Microsoft Corp. releases its next version of Windows, analysts said, but they’re still expecting an overall decline in sales for this year. One bright spot identified by Gartner was an increase in sales of laptop computers and hybrid models that combine features of tablets and laptops. That could help drive a gradual return to growth by next year, said Gartner analyst Mikako Kitagawa. Gartner estimates PC makers shipped 71.7 million computers in the first quarter, down 5.2 percent from a year earlier. A second research firm, the International Data Corp., used different methods to estimate a decline of 6.7 percent. NEW YORK — Apple’s new MacBook looked and felt like an iPad. The laptop is Apple’s lightest and thinnest yet and borrows many of the iPad’s designs, including the lack of a fan. The result is a 2-pound (0.92 kilogram) laptop yet it packs in a lot of power, including a high-resolution display and a sturdier keyboard. The new MacBook goes on sale Friday starting at $1,299 in silver, gold or gray (the same choices as the iPad). Its box even resembles the iPad’s. To make the MacBook as thin as it is — a half-inch (13.1 millimeters) at the thickest point — Apple had to redesign the keyboard. Traditional keys need to be tall to properly strike the mechanism that records the keystroke. Otherwise, you’d need to strike at the center, which many people don’t do. With the redesign, you can strike shorter keys from the edge. Those shorter keys help keep the laptop thin. The new keyboard takes getting used to. The new keyboard does get more comfortable over time— just don’t expect to write a novel on Day One. Although it’s small, the new MacBook retains a full-size keyboard. In fact, that’s why the screen is 12 inches — it matches how much space the keyboard needs. (The screen, incidentally, is stunning — compared with MacBook Air’s lower-resolution screen. The fish in “Finding Nemo” look colorful and sharp). Also contributing to thinness is a new touchpad that Apple calls Force Touch. On earlier MacBooks, the touchpad acts like a springboard. When you press it, you’re physically moving it to activate the sensor. You also have to press harder toward the back, near the springboard’s hinge, than you do in front. In the new MacBook, sensors are embedded, so you can get the same response anywhere.
There’s also a second sensor now to record the amount of pressure you’re applying. A click followed by a firm press activates a number of features. Press on a document icon, and a preview pops out. Press on an address in an email, and a map opens up. On some video apps, the pressure determines how quickly you forward or rewind. These gestures primarily work with Apple apps for now, but other app developers can incorporate the functionality. The MacBook does all this magically without the touchpad actually moving. Apple added a haptic engine to replicate the feeling of clicking and pressing. It isn’t needed technologically, but will help keep things familiar for users. Apple also updated its high-resolution, 13-inch version of the MacBook Pro with this new touchpad. Minimalism
Most of the expansion ports have disappeared. In its place is a single charging port that’s also used for accessories and video output. It uses a
new standard called USB-C. The problem is most gadgets still use older USB ports, so you’ll need a $19 adapter for a single device. It’s likely outside parties will soon make adapters to connect multiple USB devices simultaneously, but if you use USB regularly, you might consider getting an Air or Pro model instead. A $79 adapter gives you video output, with a USB port thrown in. You also might need a $19 extender for the power cord, as the box no longer comes with it. Cord extenders from older MacBooks will work, too. Speaking of power, it able to stay eight to 11 hours of battery life on a single charge, which is impressive given that the high-resolution screen requires more power than regular screens. Apple saved energy by having individual pixels on the screen let through more light. It also squeezed in more battery by shrinking the circuit board and using odd shapes to fit into all remaining space. The battery life isn’t as good as what you get on a 13inch Air, but it should be adequate for most days. (ap)

Mass tourism projects damaging Bali
DENPASAR - Toursim in Bali is shifting away from cultural tourism and moving toward mass tourism as witnessed but the seemingly unstoppable construction of hotels that ignore the carrying capacity of the island. Mass tourism is simply not in line with the concept of blue economy or eco-friendly development. “Mass tourism pays less attention to the environment and gives less empowerment to local communities,” said the Dean of the Faculty of Tourism at Udayana University, I Made Sendra, on Tuesday. He added that tourism development in Bali should be conforming to the guidelines set out in the Regional Bylaw (Perda) on Cultural Tourism. The bylaw sets forth regulations based on man’s relationship to God, the environment and other human beings as dictated by the teachings of Tri Hita Karana (three causes of happiness). These guidelines clearly need to be reinforced. “This means that when an area is being developed as a tourist destination, the needs of the local
community must be central to the plan and not displaced. The orientation of the plan should not be meant to favour those funding it with the hopes of making a profit, but rather should be focused on bigger picture for all those involved,” he said. Sendra agrees that the implementation of the concept of blue economics in the marine and fishery sector. However in Bali, only the area of Pemuteran has successfully developed the concept blue economy. Pemuteran is now known as one of the leading tourist destinations of North Bali and is managed by local residents. Previously, the area was damaged by fish bombing and potassium. that killed many coral reefs. “Other areas need to
emulate Pemuteran,” said Sendra. As for the Benoa Bay reclamation plan, Sendra asserted that if the Senate Meeting of Udayana University has declared the plan unfeasible, it would be better for the investor to successfully deal with the reclamation project on Serangan island, before making a second mistake by reclaiming Benoa Bay. The Sarangan reclamation has already negatively impacted the environment in several ways, one of which is the abrasion it has caused to Lebih Beach, Gianyar. “The reclamation of Serangan is very extensive, but so far there seems to be no plan to deal with it. Pande Tamblingan Temple In surviving their life, the Hindu community in Bali always does an activity supported by various things such as hoes, machetes, knives and sacred tools in the form of spear and kris dagger. All the devices are made by Pande clan or ironsmith, a community being good at making weapons of iron. Interestingly, all the descendants of Pande clan in Bali always say prayers in the Pande Tamblingan Temple. Why?
At the verge of mangrove forests of Lake Tamblingan lies a unique temple called the Pande Tamblingan Temple. Balinese people, especially the Pande clan flock to perform prayers in the temple. Although the lake water overflows and floods the outermost courtyard of the temple, it does not dampen the Pande community to say prayers. It aims at invoking safety, especially in carrying out the profession as a weapon maker. The temple poses the forerunner of the birth of Pande clan since ancient times. It is located about 65 km north of Denpasar, or about 30 km south of Singaraja town. Precisely, the temple is situated among the four villages namely the Munduk, Gobleg, Gesing and Umajero. The closest village to the temple is Tamblingan hamlet, belonging to Munduk Village. The Pande Tamblingan Temple perching on the verge of Lake Tamblingan spread across the area of 2,000 square meters. In the temple the devotees venerate the Lord Pasupati (Lord Brahma), Lingam-Yoni as well as the ancestors of Pande clan. Aside from Pande clan at the four villages, the temple is also venerated by Pande clan from Celuk and Bitra Village (Gianyar), Kayu Putih and Baturiti Village. Pujawali or anniversary of the temple falls on full moon of the first month in Balinese calendar. Devotees came to the temple by passing through the woods and riding traditional boat services operated by lake fishermen. According to Wayan Gede Sutama, the man from Celuk Village pioneer-

TABANAN - The transition from the rainy season to the dry season gives rise to threats to public heath. The diseases that are more prone to afflict people at this time are those carried by moquitoes, including dengue fever and chikunguya. The Division Head of the Infectious Disease and Environmental Sanitation Management (P2MPL) of the Tabanan Health Agency, Wayan Triana Suryanata, explained on Tuesday that dengue fever cases will reach their peak in April. Based on the Agency’s data, Tabanan had 99 people cases of dengue fever for
January, 103 for Febuary and 100 for March. “April is the peak month for dengue fever case,” he said. So far, 2015 has seen no deaths caused by dengue fever. In addition to dengue fever, another disease that is transmitted by mosquitoes during the transitional months between seasons is chi-
kunguya. Triana explained that the cases tend to arise in coastal areas such as Katimemes, Yeh Gangga and Tegal Temu. “It also appears in densely populated areas such as Kampung Jawa,” he said. Although both diseases are transmitted by mosquitoes, Triana explained that they are quite dif-
ferent. Those afflicted with chikunguya exhibit symptoms such as joint pain but are usually healed without requiring treatment. As a result, there is not as much data related to chikunguya as there is about dengue. “Usually there is no data recorded because patients can recover themselves so most of them are not being treated in hospital,” said Trinata. However since both diseases are transmitted by mosquito,
DENPASAR - The Bali Health Agency recorded as many as 576 cases of HIV-AIDS between January and March of 2015, with a total of 8 deaths. The Division Head of Disease Control and Environmental Health, Bali Health Agency, Gede Wira Sunetra, revealed that 232 of these casee are AIDS patients, while 344 are HIV patients. “The eight people who died were AIDS patient. But these numbers only refer to reported cases, there are many cases that are not reported,” he said. The number cases included in our data are not only of people
from Bali but also from Gorontalo, West Java, Central Java, East Java, NTB, NTT, Kalimantan, West Papua, Sulawesi and Sumatra, who seek treatment here. “Some people with HIV/AIDS from outside the island, seek treatment here because many NGOs are established in Bali as partners and VCT clinics are widely available in public health centers and hospitals,” he said. But he acknowledged that there is currently some concern about cases from Baluu, particularly in the regina of Buleleng, Badung and Denpasar. “We are still high-
lighting these three counties, but it does not necessarily mean that the other counties do not have the cases. Over the past few years, there has not been a significant increase in the number of cases in these regions because some NGOs established in Bali have been assisting patients to take medication and bring awareness” he said. He went on to say that the main factor in the spread of the disease is still unprotected sex as well as mother to fetus infections or through breast feeding. Transmission can also take place by the use of unsterilized hypo-
dermic needles shared with those who carry the disease. Most often the sharing of needles in done amongst drug addicts. In order to prevent the transmission of the disease, it is advised to not have sex with people who have a high risk of infection, to not use hypodermic needles whose sterility are not guaranteed and for people who are at high risk of infection to immediately have themselves tested so that they do not pass the virus on to anyone else. “Pregnant women should also have themselves tested so as not to pass the

But he promised his administration will do everything in its power to do so. “We do not know if the Chibok girls can be rescued. Their whereabouts remain unknown. As much as I wish to, I cannot promise that we can find them,” Buhari said in a statement Tuesday marking the anniversary of the April 14-15 mass abduction that brought international outrage. The failure to rescue the girls also elicited condemnation of Jonathan’s government and the Nigerian military, which has repeatedly made false statements about the girls and continues to make hollow promises to bring them home. Classrooms are shrine, refuge after S. Korean ferry disaster
ANSAN — Surrounded by the buzz of regular school life, a few classrooms at Danwon High School stand apart. They have become part shrine, part refuge, part confessional. One year ago a ferry carrying 325 second-year students on a field trip to a southern island sank; only 75 survived. The classrooms in this city about an hour south of Seoul have barely changed from the day the students left for the trip. A dusty piece of paper pinned to a bulletin board shows school meals for that month. The daily cleaning checklist, where each student showed with a colored dot when they’d completed a task, stops at April 14, two days before the sinking. Outside the classrooms, as the light from the late afternoon sun fades, the school is flooded with messages, letters and gifts from the city of Ansan, the country and the world. No window or wall escapes scribbled notes, Post-its, letters. The hallway is filled with boxes of small paper cranes, yellow ribbons and huge papers with messages of sadness and grief — a shrine for the dead teachers and students, most of whom waited inside the sinking ferry for help or instructions while the ship’s captain and crewmembers escaped to a coast guard rescue boat. A banner on the school gate reads: “I will never forget you.” Yellow banners are tied to the trees lining the roads outside the school, each with messages from parents who lost children. Despite the examples of grief, the
school and students seem to have found a way to coexist with the memories of those who died, even to have embraced the painful past. What may look morbid to outsiders — empty classrooms with flowers, letters and gifts for the dead students — is part of these students’ school life, a place where they can go for a quick catchup with friends, a place they once shared with those who’ve died. Outside, the setting sun filters through the paper-thin pink and white blossoms of the cherry trees. A boy in a uniform sits under a tree with his hands in his pockets, whispering something to a girl standing nearby. They ignore visiting TV cameras, an intrusion they’ve grown used to since the sinking captured the nation’s attention a year ago. In one of the preserved classrooms, four boys sit at one desk with their heads together, going over something intently. They once studied here as well; they are among the survivors of the sinking and have recently entered their third year at Danwon. As one stands up and walks to a teacher’s podium to place an envelope there, the others pick up their
backpacks and get ready to leave. When asked what they’re doing, one of them says simply, “It’s my classroom.” A student who identifies herself as Soobin leaves Post-it messages each day she visits a dead friend’s empty desk, which Soobin had cleaned. One of her messages apologizes for not visiting more often. She has also left several unopened letters. There’s a birthday cake box left unopened on one desk. Bags of potato chips and cans of soda on another. A picture of students in uniform. A plant with a note that says when it was last watered and when it will need more. A father has left a message on a desk saying he came to try to recapture the smell of his child, but that he couldn’t feel anything. A mother left a long row of Post-it messages signed with the day of her visit. The blackboard is covered with letters saying, “Come back” and “Hope you are warm up there.” The classrooms of the dead will be kept this way until the students’ “spiritual graduation ceremony” next year, the school says. SINGAPORE - East Asia’s developing economies led by China will grow slightly slower this year, with higher US interest rates and an appreciating dollar posing further risks to the region, the World Bank said Monday. at raising revenues such as cutting fuel subsidies. “In China, engineering a gradual shift to a more sustainable growth path will continue to pose challenges for policymakers, given real sector weaknesses and financial system vulnerabilities,” the bank said, adding that reforms “will depress activity in the short term”. The bank slashed its forecast for growth in the Philippines to 6.5 percent this year from its October estimate of 6.7 percent, but this is still higher than last year’s 6.1 percent expansion. For Indonesia, 2015 growth is expected to come in at 5.2 percent, slower than the bank’s previous estimate of 5.6 percent but still stronger than last year’s 5.0 percent expansion. Thailand’s economy is likely to mount a strong rebound and grow at 3.5 percent this year from just 0.70 percent in 2014 as greater political stability perks up consumer spending and investments. But the bank said growth for Malaysia -- Southeast Asia’s largest oil exporter -- will slow to 4.7
percent from 6.0 percent last year as the country feels the pinch from depressed crude prices, while a goods and services tax implemented this month will affect consumption. Malaysian growth will pick up to 5.0 percent in 2016, it said. “East Asia Pacific has thrived despite an unsteady global recovery from the financial crisis, but many risks remain for the region both in the short and long run,” said the bank’s chief economist Sudhir Shetty. Among the risks is a downturn in the eurozone and Japan, two of the region’s top export markets, the bank said. It also warned that higher US interest rates and an appreciating dollar “could raise borrowing costs, generate financial volatility and reduce capital flows” to the region. The Federal Reserve is split on when to raise ultra-low US interest rates, with timing scenarios ranging from June this year to sometime in 2016, according to minutes of its last policy meeting released last week. Oil prices higher in Asian trade SINGAPORE - Crude prices rose further in Asia Tuesday on forecasts US shale oil production will decline and hopes the Chinese government will roll out a stimulus package for the slowing economy. A drop in US production is expected to help ease the supply glut that has sent oil prices collapsing since June last year, while a stimulus package could boost demand in China, the world’s biggest energy user, analysts said. US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for May delivery gained 45 cents to $52.36 while Brent crude for May rose 51 cents to $58.44 in midday trade. The US Energy Information Administration said Monday shale oil output could decline in May, which

More flights are late, more bags are getting lost, and customers are lodging more complaints about U.S. airlines, government data shows. Dean Headley, a marketing professor at Wichita State and one of the co-authors of the annual report being released Monday, said passengers already know that air travel is getting worse. “We just got the numbers to prove it.” For the third straight year, Virgin America led the rankings. The niche airline with a limited route network was followed by Hawaiian Airlines and Delta Air Lines. Regional carriers, which operate flights under names like American Eagle, United Express and Delta Connection, tend to earn the worst marks. They fly smaller planes, so when airlines are forced to cut flights due to bad weather, they ground the regionals first to inconvenience fewer passengers. Envoy Air, which operates most American Eagle flights, finished last in the overall rankings. But the picture was bleak at the four biggest U.S. airlines too. On-time performance fell and complaint rates rose at American,
United, Delta and Southwest. The researchers blamed consolidation through mergers, which has reduced competition. DEPOK - The Indonesian National Police will deploy three thousand Mobile Brigade (Brimob) personnel to secure the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Asia-Africa Conference (AAC), which will take place in Jakarta and Bandung on April 19-24, 2015. “Some 500 Brimob personnel will join the Jakarta Police, and 2.5 thousand others will be on standby at the Brimob Headquarters for deployment whenever needed,” Head of Operations Affairs of the Brimob Corps of the National Police Sr Comr Leo Bona Lubis stated on Tuesday. To maintain security in Bandung, the National Police will assign some 1,015 mobile brigade personnel from West Java Police’s Brimob Corps and 400 others from the Jakarta Police’s Mobile Brigade Corps. Lubis revealed that snipers from the corps would also be assigned. “We cannot reveal details about the snipers. We have to keep it a secret, but they will be deployed at certain locations,” he said. In the meantime, the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) will deploy 26,663 officers along with

TNI Chief General Moeldoko affirmed that the military personnel are well prepared to secure the implementation of the upcoming AAC 2015. “For ensuring security during the AAC, thank God, we have conducted a technical force game (TFG). With the participation and involvement of the Indonesian society, the general expressed optimism that the implementation of the AAC will take place smoothly and successfully. Indonesian Islamic parties propose alcohol ban
JAKARTA - Indonesia’s Islamic parties have proposed legislation banning alcohol consumption that could see offenders jailed for up to two years, lawmakers said Tuesday, the latest bid to crack down on drinking in the Muslim-majority nation. Under the bill currently being discussed in parliament, the consumption, sale, production and distribution of all drinks containing more than one percent alcohol would be prohibited. “Alcohol consumption is increasing, especially among young people and it threatens their future because it causes addiction and potentially damages their health,” lawmaker Muhammad Arwani Thomafi, from the United Development Party, one of the parties pushing for the ban, told AFP. It is not the first time that Islamic parties in Indonesia -- home to the world’s biggest Muslim population -- have sought to ban alcohol. Previous attempts have
not succeeded, and have been viewed as an attempt to pander to conservative voters and win support. On Thursday a ban on the sale of alcohol at small retailers comes into force across the country, although supermarkets, bars and restaurants will not be affected. The new bill put forward by Islamic parties, which could become law by the end of the year, proposes a jail term of between three months and two years for anyone caught drinking alcohol, while anyone caught producing or distributing alcoholic drinks could face between two and 10 years in jail. Thomafi said there could be
some exemptions, such as for religious rituals and tourism sites -- meaning drinking may still be allowed in holiday hotspots, such as the Hindu-majority island Bali. The bill has been proposed by the United Development Party and the Prosperous Justice Party. The majority of Indonesian’s 250 million people practice a moderate form of Islam, and most do not drink. Drinking alcohol is forbidden under Islamic law. However, in big cities such as the capital Jakarta and areas popular with tourists, drinking is more common and alcohol is widely available. (afp)
BKPM to simplify licensing procedure on general port projects
JAKARTA - The Indonesian Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) said it will simplify the licensing procedure for general port projects. Head of BKPM Franky Sibarani said on Monday that simplification is needed to reduce the number of days needed to complete the licensing procedure from normally 3 years. The country plans to build more ports to implement the government’s vision to make the country a world maritime axis, Franky said when visiting Teluk Lamongan, Surabaya. The government hopes to build 24 new ports until 2019. “If a port project would need three years only for licensing procedure it would be almost impossible to carry out and finish development of 24 port projects in five years until 2019,” he said. He said in the electricity sector the licensing procedure has been simplified reducing the number
of days needed to wrap up licensing procedure to 256 days from normally 930 days. The same method of simplification could be made in the port sector, he said. He said BKPM would coordinate with related ministries or agencies to accelerate the process of licensing. “In a meeting with Pelindo III (state-owned port operator), BKPM and the Integrated Service Capital Investment Board for One Stop Service (BPM-PTSP) Gresik , an agreement has been reached to simplify the procedure,” he said. “We will make a list of licenses to see among the licenses for which we could finish the process faster,” he added. He said the experience of Pelindo III in seeking the license would be a great help in studying the plan. Franky also visited an industrial estate project, Java Integrated
Industrial Port Estate (JIIPE). The industrial estate in Manyar, Gresik District, is built by PT AKR Corporindo in cooperation with PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) III. Franky said the government gives priority to development of industrial estate to encourage investment. In the period of 2015-2019, the government plans to build 15 new industrial estates including 13 outside Java. So far development of industrial estate have been concentrated in Java. “Through visit like this, BKPM wants to make sure that investment projects would run as expected and at the same time we could see problem that need sorting out and find a solution. UK military monitors 3 Russian warships in English Channel LONDON — Britain’s Ministry of Defense says it is monitoring the activities of a Russian destroyer and two other ships in the English Channel. The ministry says the destroyer Severomorsk, a tanker and a support ship are passing through the waters while returning from the Mediterranean. Officials said “no exercises were seen” — some reports had suggested
the ships were to carry out military drills — but that the Royal Navy’s HMS Argyll is monitoring the ships Tuesday. The developments follow similar incidents in recent months. BEIJING — Chinese Premier Li Keqiang met Tuesday with a Japanese delegation led by ex-Chief Cabinet Secretary Yohei Kono, amid halting efforts to reduce lingering tensions between the countries before this year’s 70th anniversary of Japan’s surrender at the end of World War II. Li told Kono that the last two years have been difficult, but “both sides have the wish to improve things.” That was a reference to a festering island territorial dispute and what Beijing sees as moves by some in Japan to shirk their country’s responsibility for the war. A brief meeting in November between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping helped break the ice, but a full range of exchanges has yet to be restored. Iran expects delivery of Russian missiles by end of the year
MOSCOW — Iran expects Russia to deliver the S-300 air defense missile system by the end of the year, the head of the Iranian security council said Tuesday. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday lifted a fiveyear ban on delivery of the missile system to Iran, drawing criticism from the United States and Israel. The S-300 would significantly bolster the Islamic republic’s military capability by providing a strong deterrent against any air attack. Iran had responded to the Russian ban by filing a lawsuit with a court in Geneva seeking $4 billion in damages for breach of contract. Ali Shamkhani, who heads Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Tuesday in Moscow that the lawsuit will be withdrawn only after delivery of the S-300s,
which he hoped would happen by the end of the year, Russian news agencies reported. His Russian counterpart, Nikolai Patrushev, said delivery would take time. “It will depend on our manufacturers,” he told the Interfax news agency. “I believe they will need at least six months to complete this work.” Patrushev was more cautious than Putin’s spokesman, who said Monday that the missile system could be shipped to Iran at any moment. Russia signed the $800 million contract to sell Iran the S-300 missile system in 2007, but suspended delivery three years later
because of strong objections from the United States and Israel. The preliminary agreement on settling the Iranian nuclear standoff struck earlier this month made the ban unnecessary, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in a televised statement. The framework agreement reached by Iran and six world powers is intended to significantly restrict its ability to produce nuclear weapons while giving it relief from international sanctions. Kimi Raikkonen believes Ferrari will catch the pacesetting Mercedes Formula 1 team this season despite suffering defeat at the Chinese Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton led Nico Rosberg home to secure Mercedes’ second one-two of the season at Shanghai, with Sebastian Vettel and Raikkonen third and fourth respectively. The result reasserted Mercedes’ dominance following Vettel’s shock win in Malaysia, but during the opening two stints the Ferraris were able to keep pace with Hamilton and Rosberg. When asked if Mercedes can be caught by Ferrari this season, Raikkonen replied: “Yes. I don’t see a reason why not. “I think we have good plans already since last year and made big
gains and will make big gains during this year. “Everybody improves and it depends what the rest are doing but we trust the way our team is working altogether and what we are doing. “So it definitely shows we are going the right way and doing the right things but you need time - you cannot make miracles overnight.” Raikkonen said the Shanghai result was evidence of different circuits suiting different cars rather than indicating that Sepang was a false dawn. “Like Seb showed, we could win but obviously it depends,” added the Finn. “One circuit can be good for one team and the next can be a different story. “We have to be up there. When something
happens to them [Mercedes] or conditions change, we have to be there. “I feel with the speed we will get there so we can regularly try to beat them in any conditions or at any circuit - but we need some more time.” Ahead of this weekend’s Bahrain GP, Raikkonen said his goal is to improve his performance across practice and qualifying after a series of mistakes in the opening three races. “We go there, try to do our best and try to clean up Friday and Saturday,” he said. “I don’t see it is going to change a lot, but who knows? LONDON - Arsenal’s eight-match winning streak in the Premier League has taken even manager Arsene Wenger by surprise, according to the Frenchman whose side retain an outside chance of winning the title. “I always hope to get the best out of my team, but no manager in the world if he is serious can predict a run like this,” Wenger told Arsenal’s website. “In the Premier League it’s very difficult to predict.” Wenger has once again come under fire this season, with fans frustrated by Arsenal’s failure to mount a serious title challenge and another last16 exit in the Champions League. Kimi Raikkonen believes Ferrari will catch the pacesetting Mercedes Formula 1 team this season despite suffering defeat at the Chinese Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton led Nico Rosberg home to secure Mercedes’ second one-two of the season at Shanghai, with Sebastian Vettel and Raikkonen third and fourth respectively. The result reasserted Mercedes’ dominance following Vettel’s shock win in Malaysia, but during the opening two stints the Ferraris were able to keep pace with Hamilton and Rosberg. When asked if Mercedes can be caught by Ferrari this season, Raikkonen replied: “Yes. I don’t see a reason why not. “I think we have good plans already since last year and made big

UK military monitors 3 Russian warships in English Channel LONDON — Britain’s Ministry of Defense says it is monitoring the activities of a Russian destroyer and two other ships in the English Channel. The ministry says the destroyer Severomorsk, a tanker and a support ship are passing through the waters while returning from the Mediterranean. Officials said “no exercises were seen” — some reports had suggested
the ships were to carry out military drills — but that the Royal Navy’s HMS Argyll is monitoring the ships Tuesday. The developments follow similar incidents in recent months. In November the Royal Navy monitored a squadron of Russian warships as they moved through the Strait of Dover after carrying out exercises in the North Sea. (ap)
BEIJING — Chinese Premier Li Keqiang met Tuesday with a Japanese delegation led by ex-Chief Cabinet Secretary Yohei Kono, amid halting efforts to reduce lingering tensions between the countries before this year’s 70th anniversary of Japan’s surrender at the end of World War II. Li told Kono that the last two years have been difficult, but “both sides have the wish to improve things.” That was a reference to a festering island territorial dispute and what Beijing sees as moves by some in Japan to shirk their country’s responsibility for the war. A brief meeting in November between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping helped break the ice, but a full range of exchanges has yet to be restored. Kono said that meeting was made possible by the “enormous efforts and wisdom of diplomats from both countries” and that members of his delegation from the Association for the Promotion of International Trade

Iran expects delivery of Russian missiles by end of the year
MOSCOW — Iran expects Russia to deliver the S-300 air defense missile system by the end of the year, the head of the Iranian security council said Tuesday. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday lifted a fiveyear ban on delivery of the missile system to Iran, drawing criticism from the United States and Israel. The S-300 would significantly bolster the Islamic republic’s military capability by providing a strong deterrent against any air attack. Iran had responded to the Russian ban by filing a lawsuit with a court in Geneva seeking $4 billion in damages for breach of contract. Ali Shamkhani, who heads Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Tuesday in Moscow that the lawsuit will be withdrawn only after delivery of the S-300s,
which he hoped would happen by the end of the year, Russian news agencies reported. His Russian counterpart, Nikolai Patrushev, said delivery would take time. “It will depend on our manufacturers,” he told the Interfax news agency. “I believe they will need at least six months to complete this work.” Patrushev was more cautious than Putin’s spokesman, who said Monday that the missile system could be shipped to Iran at any moment. Russia signed the $800 million contract to sell Iran the S-300 missile system in 2007, but suspended delivery three years later
because of strong objections from the United States and Israel. The preliminary agreement on settling the Iranian nuclear standoff struck earlier this month made the ban unnecessary, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in a televised statement. The framework agreement reached by Iran and six world powers is intended to significantly restrict its ability to produce nuclear weapons while giving it relief from international sanctions. SINGAPORE - East Asia’s developing economies led by China will grow slightly slower this year, with higher US interest rates and an appreciating dollar posing further risks to the region, the World Bank said Monday. at raising revenues such as cutting fuel subsidies. “In China, engineering a gradual shift to a more sustainable growth path will continue to pose challenges for policymakers, given real sector weaknesses and financial system vulnerabilities,” the bank said, adding that reforms “will depress activity in the short term”. The bank slashed its forecast for growth in the Philippines to 6.5 percent this year from its October estimate of 6.7 percent, but this is still higher than last year’s 6.1 percent expansion. For Indonesia, 2015 growth is expected to come in at 5.2 percent, slower than the bank’s previous estimate of 5.6 percent but still stronger than last year’s 5.0 percent expansion. Thailand’s economy is likely to mount a strong rebound and grow at 3.5 percent this year from just 0.70 percent in 2014 as greater political stability perks up consumer spending and investments. But the bank said growth for Malaysia -- Southeast Asia’s largest oil exporter -- will slow to 4.7
percent from 6.0 percent last year as the country feels the pinch from depressed crude prices, while a goods and services tax implemented this month will affect consumption. Malaysian growth will pick up to 5.0 percent in 2016, it said. “East Asia Pacific has thrived despite an unsteady global recovery from the financial crisis, but many risks remain for the region both in the short and long run,” said the bank’s chief economist Sudhir Shetty. Among the risks is a downturn in the eurozone and Japan, two of the region’s top export markets, the bank said. It also warned that higher US interest rates and an appreciating dollar “could raise borrowing costs, generate financial volatility and reduce capital flows” to the region. The Federal Reserve is split on when to raise ultra-low US interest rates, with timing scenarios ranging from June this year to sometime in 2016, according to minutes of its last policy meeting released last week. DALLAS — Think flying is getting worse? A pair of university researchers who track the airline business say it’s a fact. More flights are late, more bags are getting lost, and customers are lodging more complaints about U.S. airlines, government data shows. Dean Headley, a marketing professor at Wichita State and one of the co-authors of the annual report being released Monday, said passengers already know that air travel is getting worse. “We just got the numbers to prove it.” For the third straight year, Virgin America led the rankings. The niche airline with a limited route network was followed by Hawaiian Airlines and Delta Air Lines. Regional carriers, which operate flights under names like American Eagle, United Express and Delta Connection, tend to earn the worst marks. They fly smaller planes, so when airlines are forced to cut flights due to bad weather, they ground the regionals first to inconvenience fewer passengers. Envoy Air, which operates most American Eagle flights, finished last in the overall rankings. But the picture was bleak at the four biggest U.S. airlines too. On-time performance fell and complaint rates rose at American,
United, Delta and Southwest. The researchers blamed consolidation through mergers, which has reduced competition. Headley said airlines performed better in the years after 2001, when travel demand fell and planes were less crowded. Airlines were also losing money. They returned to profitability when the airlines left after mergers limited flights to keep fares up. The average plane is now more than 80 percent full at most airlines, and many flights are oversold. “They have put the same number of people in fewer airplanes,” Headley said in an interview. “Anytime the system ramps up, it goes haywire.” Airlines are ordering new planes and making other investments that they promise will lead to better service. Many of the biggest improvements are targeted at the airlines’ most valued customers — those in first-class and business-class sections. The annual report is now in its 25th year. DEPOK - The Indonesian National Police will deploy three thousand Mobile Brigade (Brimob) personnel to secure the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Asia-Africa Conference (AAC), which will take place in Jakarta and Bandung on April 19-24, 2015. “Some 500 Brimob personnel will join the Jakarta Police, and 2.5 thousand others will be on standby at the Brimob Headquarters for deployment whenever needed,” Head of Operations Affairs of the Brimob Corps of the National Police Sr Comr Leo Bona Lubis stated on Tuesday. To maintain security in Bandung, the National Police will assign some 1,015 mobile brigade personnel from West Java Police’s Brimob Corps and 400 others from the Jakarta Police’s Mobile Brigade Corps. Lubis revealed that snipers from the corps would also be assigned. “We cannot reveal details about the snipers. We have to keep it a secret, but they will be deployed at certain locations,” he said. In the meantime, the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) will deploy 26,663 officers along with
9.7 thousand police personnel. TNI Chief General Moeldoko affirmed that the military personnel are well prepared to secure the implementation of the upcoming AAC 2015. “For ensuring security during the AAC, thank God, we have conducted a technical force game (TFG). With the participation and involvement of the Indonesian society, the general expressed optimism that the implementation of the AAC will take place smoothly and successfully. He emphasized that the security officers will guard the world leaders participating in the AAC. Indonesian Islamic parties propose alcohol ban
JAKARTA - Indonesia’s Islamic parties have proposed legislation banning alcohol consumption that could see offenders jailed for up to two years, lawmakers said Tuesday, the latest bid to crack down on drinking in the Muslim-majority nation. Under the bill currently being discussed in parliament, the consumption, sale, production and distribution of all drinks containing more than one percent alcohol would be prohibited. “Alcohol consumption is increasing, especially among young people and it threatens their future because it causes addiction and potentially damages their health,” lawmaker Muhammad Arwani Thomafi, from the United Development Party, one of the parties pushing for the ban, told AFP. It is not the first time that Islamic parties in Indonesia -- home to the world’s biggest Muslim population -- have sought to ban alcohol. Previous attempts have
not succeeded, and have been viewed as an attempt to pander to conservative voters and win support. On Thursday a ban on the sale of alcohol at small retailers comes into force across the country, although supermarkets, bars and restaurants will not be affected. The new bill put forward by Islamic parties, which could become law by the end of the year, proposes a jail term of between three months and two years for anyone caught drinking alcohol, while anyone caught producing or distributing alcoholic drinks could face between two and 10 years in jail. Thomafi said there could be
some exemptions, such as for religious rituals and tourism sites -- meaning drinking may still be allowed in holiday hotspots, such as the Hindu-majority island Bali. The bill has been proposed by the United Development Party and the Prosperous Justice Party. The majority of Indonesian’s 250 million people practice a moderate form of Islam, and most do not drink. Drinking alcohol is forbidden under Islamic law. However, in big cities such as the capital Jakarta and areas popular with tourists, drinking is more common and alcohol is widely available. (afp)
BKPM to simplify licensing procedure on general port projects
JAKARTA - The Indonesian Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) said it will simplify the licensing procedure for general port projects. Head of BKPM Franky Sibarani said on Monday that simplification is needed to reduce the number of days needed to complete the licensing procedure from normally 3 years. The country plans to build more ports to implement the government’s vision to make the country a world maritime axis, Franky said when visiting Teluk Lamongan, Surabaya. The government hopes to build 24 new ports until 2019. “If a port project would need three years only for licensing procedure it would be almost impossible to carry out and finish development of 24 port projects in five years until 2019,” he said. He said in the electricity sector the licensing procedure has been simplified reducing the number
of days needed to wrap up licensing procedure to 256 days from normally 930 days. The same method of simplification could be made in the port sector, he said. He said BKPM would coordinate with related ministries or agencies to accelerate the process of licensing. “In a meeting with Pelindo III (state-owned port operator), BKPM and the Integrated Service Capital Investment Board for One Stop Service (BPM-PTSP) Gresik , an agreement has been reached to simplify the procedure,” he said. “We will make a list of licenses to see among the licenses for which we could finish the process faster,” he added. He said the experience of Pelindo III in seeking the license would be a great help in studying the plan. Franky also visited an industrial estate project, Java Integrated
Industrial Port Estate (JIIPE). The industrial estate in Manyar, Gresik District, is built by PT AKR Corporindo in cooperation with PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) III. Franky said the government gives priority to development of industrial estate to encourage investment. In the period of 2015-2019, the government plans to build 15 new industrial estates including 13 outside Java. So far development of industrial estate have been concentrated in Java. “Through visit like this, BKPM wants to make sure that investment projects would run as expected and at the same time we could see problem that need sorting out and find a solution. That is part of the duties of BKPM called the bottle-necking, Franky said. Licensing procedure is a potential drag for the development of the 24 ports to be built by the government, he added. (ant)

TABANAN - The transition from the rainy season to the dry season gives rise to threats to public heath. The diseases that are more prone to afflict people at this time are those carried by moquitoes, including dengue fever and chikunguya. The Division Head of the Infectious Disease and Environmental Sanitation Management (P2MPL) of the Tabanan Health Agency, Wayan Triana Suryanata, explained on Tuesday that dengue fever cases will reach their peak in April. Based on the Agency’s data, Tabanan had 99 people cases of dengue fever for
January, 103 for Febuary and 100 for March. “April is the peak month for dengue fever case,” he said. So far, 2015 has seen no deaths caused by dengue fever. In addition to dengue fever, another disease that is transmitted by mosquitoes during the transitional months between seasons is chi-
kunguya. Triana explained that the cases tend to arise in coastal areas such as Katimemes, Yeh Gangga and Tegal Temu. “It also appears in densely populated areas such as Kampung Jawa,” he said. Although both diseases are transmitted by mosquitoes, Triana explained that they are quite dif-
ferent. Those afflicted with chikunguya exhibit symptoms such as joint pain but are usually healed without requiring treatment. As a result, there is not as much data related to chikunguya as there is about dengue. “Usually there is no data recorded because patients can recover themselves so most of them are not being treated in hospital,” said Trinata. He went on to say that the main factor in the spread of the disease is still unprotected sex as well as mother to fetus infections or through breast feeding. Transmission can also take place by the use of unsterilized hypo-
dermic needles shared with those who carry the disease. Most often the sharing of needles in done amongst drug addicts. In order to prevent the transmission of the disease, it is advised to not have sex with people who have a high risk of infection, to not use hypodermic needles whose sterility are not guaranteed and for people who are at high risk of infection to immediately have themselves tested so that they do not pass the virus on to anyone else. “Pregnant women should also have themselves tested so as not to pass the

But he promised his administration will do everything in its power to do so. “We do not know if the Chibok girls can be rescued. Their whereabouts remain unknown. As much as I wish to, I cannot promise that we can find them,” Buhari said in a statement Tuesday marking the anniversary of the April 14-15 mass abduction that brought international outrage. The failure to rescue the girls also elicited condemnation of Jonathan’s government and the Nigerian military, which has repeatedly made false statements about the girls and continues to make hollow promises to bring them home. Those failures contributed to Jonathan’s thrashing at the polls March 28 by Buhari, a former military dictator who says he is a convert to democracy and promised a new approach Tuesday. “We hear the anguish of our citizens and intend to respond accordingly,” Buhari’s statement said. “This new approach must also begin with honesty.” Activists are marking the anniversary of the mass abduction that outraged the world with a change in their slogan from “Bring Back Our Girls — Now and Alive” to “Never to be Forgotten.” But a hopeful message addressed to the captives comes from Pakistani activist Yousafzai Malala, promising the girls scholarships and saying they must never lose courage. Classrooms are shrine, refuge after S. Korean ferry disaster
ANSAN — Surrounded by the buzz of regular school life, a few classrooms at Danwon High School stand apart. They have become part shrine, part refuge, part confessional. One year ago a ferry carrying 325 second-year students on a field trip to a southern island sank; only 75 survived. The classrooms in this city about an hour south of Seoul have barely changed from the day the students left for the trip. A dusty piece of paper pinned to a bulletin board shows school meals for that month. The daily cleaning checklist, where each student showed with a colored dot when they’d completed a task, stops at April 14, two days before the sinking. Outside the classrooms, as the light from the late afternoon sun fades, the school is flooded with messages, letters and gifts from the city of Ansan, the country and the world. No window or wall escapes scribbled notes, Post-its, letters. The hallway is filled with boxes of small paper cranes, yellow ribbons and huge papers with messages of sadness and grief — a shrine for the dead teachers and students, most of whom waited inside the sinking ferry for help or instructions while the ship’s captain and crewmembers escaped to a coast guard rescue boat. Despite the examples of grief, the
school and students seem to have found a way to coexist with the memories of those who died, even to have embraced the painful past. What may look morbid to outsiders — empty classrooms with flowers, letters and gifts for the dead students — is part of these students’ school life, a place where they can go for a quick catchup with friends, a place they once shared with those who’ve died. Outside, the setting sun filters through the paper-thin pink and white blossoms of the cherry trees. A boy in a uniform sits under a tree with his hands in his pockets, whispering something to a girl standing nearby. They ignore visiting TV cameras, an intrusion they’ve grown used to since the sinking captured the nation’s attention a year ago. In one of the preserved classrooms, four boys sit at one desk with their heads together, going over something intently. They once studied here as well; they are among the survivors of the sinking and have recently entered their third year at Danwon. As one stands up and walks to a teacher’s podium to place an envelope there, the others pick up their
backpacks and get ready to leave. When asked what they’re doing, one of them says simply, “It’s my classroom.” A student who identifies herself as Soobin leaves Post-it messages each day she visits a dead friend’s empty desk, which Soobin had cleaned. One of her messages apologizes for not visiting more often. She has also left several unopened letters. There’s a birthday cake box left unopened on one desk. Bags of potato chips and cans of soda on another. A picture of students in uniform. A plant with a note that says when it was last watered and when it will need more. A father has left a message on a desk saying he came to try to recapture the smell of his child, but that he couldn’t feel anything. A mother left a long row of Post-it messages signed with the day of her visit. The blackboard is covered with letters saying, “Come back” and “Hope you are warm up there.” The classrooms of the dead will be kept this way until the students’ “spiritual graduation ceremony” next year, the school says. IBM teams with Apple on artificial intelligence health program SAN FRANSISCO - IBM on Monday announced alliances with Apple and others to put artificial intelligence to work drawing potentially life-saving insights from the booming amount of health data generated on personal devices.
IBM is collaborating with Apple, Medtronic, and Johnson & Johnson to use its Watson artificial intelligence system to give users insights and advice from personal health information gathered from fitness trackers, smartphones, implants or other devices. PC sales declined again in first quarter SAN JOSE — Weak demand for desktop computers caused PC sales to plunge again in the first quarter of this year, reflecting the industry’s ongoing struggles with the shift to smartphones, tablets and other mobile gadgets. One big reason for the decline was businesses buying fewer desktop computers, according to the Gartner research firm. It noted companies have mostly finished replacing older PCs that used outdated Windows XP software. PC sales may get a boost later this year when Microsoft Corp. releases its next version of Windows, analysts said, but they’re still expecting an overall decline in sales for this year. One bright spot identified by Gartner was an increase in sales of laptop computers and hybrid models that combine features of tablets and laptops. That could help drive a gradual return to growth by next year, said Gartner analyst Mikako Kitagawa. Gartner estimates PC makers shipped 71.7 million computers in the first quarter, down 5.2 percent from a year earlier. A second research firm, the International Data Corp., used different methods to estimate a decline of 6.7 percent. NEW YORK — Apple’s new MacBook looked and felt like an iPad. The laptop is Apple’s lightest and thinnest yet and borrows many of the iPad’s designs, including the lack of a fan. The result is a 2-pound (0.92 kilogram) laptop yet it packs in a lot of power, including a high-resolution display and a sturdier keyboard. The new MacBook goes on sale Friday starting at $1,299 in silver, gold or gray (the same choices as the iPad). Its box even resembles the iPad’s. To make the MacBook as thin as it is — a half-inch (13.1 millimeters) at the thickest point — Apple had to redesign the keyboard. Traditional keys need to be tall to properly strike the mechanism that records the keystroke. Otherwise, you’d need to strike at the center, which many people don’t do. With the redesign, you can strike shorter keys from the edge. Those shorter keys help keep the laptop thin. The new keyboard takes getting used to. The new keyboard does get more comfortable over time— just don’t expect to write a novel on Day One. Although it’s small, the new MacBook retains a full-size keyboard. In fact, that’s why the screen is 12 inches — it matches how much space the keyboard needs. (The screen, incidentally, is stunning — compared with MacBook Air’s lower-resolution screen. The fish in “Finding Nemo” look colorful and sharp). Also contributing to thinness is a new touchpad that Apple calls Force Touch. On earlier MacBooks, the touchpad acts like a springboard. When you press it, you’re physically moving it to activate the sensor. You also have to press harder toward the back, near the springboard’s hinge, than you do in front. In the new MacBook, sensors are embedded, so you can get the same response anywhere.
There’s also a second sensor now to record the amount of pressure you’re applying. A click followed by a firm press activates a number of features. Press on a document icon, and a preview pops out. Press on an address in an email, and a map opens up. On some video apps, the pressure determines how quickly you forward or rewind. These gestures primarily work with Apple apps for now, but other app developers can incorporate the functionality. The MacBook does all this magically without the touchpad actually moving. Apple added a haptic engine to replicate the feeling of clicking and pressing. It isn’t needed technologically, but will help keep things familiar for users. Apple also updated its high-resolution, 13-inch version of the MacBook Pro with this new touchpad. Minimalism
Most of the expansion ports have disappeared. In its place is a single charging port that’s also used for accessories and video output. It uses a
new standard called USB-C. The problem is most gadgets still use older USB ports, so you’ll need a $19 adapter for a single device. It’s likely outside parties will soon make adapters to connect multiple USB devices simultaneously, but if you use USB regularly, you might consider getting an Air or Pro model instead. A $79 adapter gives you video output, with a USB port thrown in. You also might need a $19 extender for the power cord, as the box no longer comes with it. Cord extenders from older MacBooks will work, too. Speaking of power, it able to stay eight to 11 hours of battery life on a single charge, which is impressive given that the high-resolution screen requires more power than regular screens. Apple saved energy by having individual pixels on the screen let through more light. It also squeezed in more battery by shrinking the circuit board and using odd shapes to fit into all remaining space. The battery life isn’t as good as what you get on a 13inch Air, but it should be adequate for most days. (ap)

Mass tourism projects damaging Bali
DENPASAR - Toursim in Bali is shifting away from cultural tourism and moving toward mass tourism as witnessed but the seemingly unstoppable construction of hotels that ignore the carrying capacity of the island. Mass tourism is simply not in line with the concept of blue economy or eco-friendly development. “Mass tourism pays less attention to the environment and gives less empowerment to local communities,” said the Dean of the Faculty of Tourism at Udayana University, I Made Sendra, on Tuesday. He added that tourism development in Bali should be conforming to the guidelines set out in the Regional Bylaw (Perda) on Cultural Tourism. The bylaw sets forth regulations based on man’s relationship to God, the environment and other human beings as dictated by the teachings of Tri Hita Karana (three causes of happiness). These guidelines clearly need to be reinforced. “This means that when an area is being developed as a tourist destination, the needs of the local
community must be central to the plan and not displaced. The orientation of the plan should not be meant to favour those funding it with the hopes of making a profit, but rather should be focused on bigger picture for all those involved,” he said. Sendra agrees that the implementation of the concept of blue economics in the marine and fishery sector. However in Bali, only the area of Pemuteran has successfully developed the concept blue economy. Pemuteran is now known as one of the leading tourist destinations of North Bali and is managed by local residents. Previously, the area was damaged by fish bombing and potassium. that killed many coral reefs. “Other areas need to
emulate Pemuteran,” said Sendra. As for the Benoa Bay reclamation plan, Sendra asserted that if the Senate Meeting of Udayana University has declared the plan unfeasible, it would be better for the investor to successfully deal with the reclamation project on Serangan island, before making a second mistake by reclaiming Benoa Bay. The Sarangan reclamation has already negatively impacted the environment in several ways, one of which is the abrasion it has caused to Lebih Beach, Gianyar. “The reclamation of Serangan is very extensive, but so far there seems to be no plan to deal with it. Pande Tamblingan Temple In surviving their life, the Hindu community in Bali always does an activity supported by various things such as hoes, machetes, knives and sacred tools in the form of spear and kris dagger. All the devices are made by Pande clan or ironsmith, a community being good at making weapons of iron. Interestingly, all the descendants of Pande clan in Bali always say prayers in the Pande Tamblingan Temple. Why?
At the verge of mangrove forests of Lake Tamblingan lies a unique temple called the Pande Tamblingan Temple. Balinese people, especially the Pande clan flock to perform prayers in the temple. Although the lake water overflows and floods the outermost courtyard of the temple, it does not dampen the Pande community to say prayers. It aims at invoking safety, especially in carrying out the profession as a weapon maker. The temple poses the forerunner of the birth of Pande clan since ancient times. It is located about 65 km north of Denpasar, or about 30 km south of Singaraja town. Precisely, the temple is situated among the four villages namely the Munduk, Gobleg, Gesing and Umajero. The closest village to the temple is Tamblingan hamlet, belonging to Munduk Village. The Pande Tamblingan Temple perching on the verge of Lake Tamblingan spread across the area of 2,000 square meters. In the temple the devotees venerate the Lord Pasupati (Lord Brahma), Lingam-Yoni as well as the ancestors of Pande clan. Aside from Pande clan at the four villages, the temple is also venerated by Pande clan from Celuk and Bitra Village (Gianyar), Kayu Putih and Baturiti Village. Pujawali or anniversary of the temple falls on full moon of the first month in Balinese calendar. Devotees came to the temple by passing through the woods and riding traditional boat services operated by lake fishermen. According to Wayan Gede Sutama, the man from Celuk Village pioneer-

If we talk about the purpose of the reclamation in Kuta, we have to then ask: is it the same as the Benoa Bay reclamation? However, the shipwrecks formerly serving the crossing of Padangbai-Lembar (Lombok) still leaves a problem because the debris of the burning ship in the sea has not been totally cleaned up. According to Winastra, the UD Kurnia dismantling the ship has promised to clean up the debris of the Gelis Rauh passenger ship within three months starting from November 26, 2014 through February 26, 2015. The promise was even delivered by one of the laborers of the UD Kurnia named I Gusti Ngurah Agung in the meeting held in the office of the headman on November 26. The meeting was attended by subdistrict head of Dawan, subdistrict police chief, military region commander, headman and chief of Karangdadi customary village and Pesurungan, Kusamba village. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LOS ANGELES - Hollywood stars have chorused support for Hillary Clinton’s US presidential campaign, indicating Tinseltown will be firmly behind the former first lady as she targets the White House. Within hours of Clinton confirming her plans to stand in 2016, celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Scarlett Johansson and Magic Johnson gave a stamp of approval to her bid to become the first female commander-in-chief. “I’m very excited by the news,” singer Jennifer Lopez was quoted as saying by Eonline at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles. “I think it’s time for a woman (president)” she added. The festival announced Monday that “La Tete Haute,” a French drama directed by Emmanuelle Bercot, will open the 68th Cannes Film Festival on May 13. The film is about the upbringing of a juvenile delinquent and stars Catherine Deneuve. The French Riviera festival has sometimes been criticized for not programming more
female-directed films. Cannes head Thierry Fremaux said the choice “is a clear reflection of our desire to see the festival start with a different piece, which is both bold and moving.” Joel and Ethan Coen will preside over this year’s jury. The film slate will be announced Thursday, adding to the already announced out-of-competition entry “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Cannes runs May 13-24. (ap)

MANGUPURA - Tomy Winata’s plan to reclaim Benoa Bay in order to enhance Bali tourism and make it more competitive with the tourism of other countries, is not an appropriate attitude according Chairman of the Indonesian Tourism Intellectuals (ICPI) of Bali and lecturer at Udayana University, Putu Anom. The culture based tourism of Bali cannot be compared to the kinds of tourism that are growing in other countries. “The development of tourism in Bali must not be equated with the development of tourism in other places, such as Jakarta or Singapore,” said Anom. According to Putu Anom and others, the uniqueness of Bali’s natural and socio-cultural landscape must remain the icons that motivate travelers to come and visit- travelers looking for something different that what they find at home. “Travelers
visit Bali because they are curious to see things that look different from where they come from,” he said. He asserted that Balinese people are not allergic to investors who want to support the development of tourism here. However, potential investors must abide by the concept of Tri Hita Karana (three causes of happiness) to realize harmony in life. In addition, investors must adhere to Regional Bylaws (Perda) on Cultural Tourism (inspired by the noble values of Hinduism), to the
provincial spatial plan (RTRWP) for Bali, as well as to county or municipal spatial plans. “In principle, we do not reject the presence of investors wishing to build in Bali, but the investors must build with an emphasis on equitable development, and development spread across all regions, not just concentrated in South Bali,” he added. South Bali is already overcapacity, and this fact raises many issues. Anom is adament that the government issued moratorium on
further construction in South Bali, must be judicially implemented by the government’s executive branch, with the consent of the legislative, as decision makers of public policy. “The People’s representatives must carefully absorb and implement the aspirations of all levels of society”. “Currently the people of Bali are awaiting the confirmation of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), who won the election, to see if they will reject or approve the Benoa Bay reclamation plan,” he said. The party with the bull’s head logo will likely be advising the president regarding strategic policies, particularly public policy that concerns the public sector.
“Certainty and assertiveness are required by Bali’s Council of Regional Representatives of the House of Representatives, the Bali House, and Regents and Mayor across Bali, regarding whether they accept or reject the Benoa Bay reclamation project, especially if they plan on running in the next elections,” said Anom, the academic from Kapal village, Mengwi-Badung.
