The pop star and “American Idol” judge was honored Saturday night at the 25th annual GLAAD Media Awards with the Vanguard Award, which lauds efforts to increase visibility and understanding of the gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender community. In addition to being an outspoken advocate for gay rights, Lopez serves as executive producer of the ABC Family series “The Fosters,” which centers on a lesbian

couple raising their children. “The Fosters” also won the award for outstanding drama series. Other winners at the Beverly Hilton Hotel ceremony included NBC’s soap opera “Days of Our Lives” for daily drama, Fuse’s “Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce” for reality program, Tegan and Sara for music artist, and “Young Avengers” for comic book. “Bridegroom” and “Call Me Kuchu” tied for the outstanding documentary trophy. Laverne Cox, who stars in the Netflix women’s prison drama “Orange is the New Black,” was presented with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, which

is given to a gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender member of the entertainment community. Previous recipients include Wanda Sykes, Rufus Wainwright, Melissa Etheridge, Ellen DeGeneres and Ian McKellen. Norman Lear, the veteran producer of such groundbreaking TV comedies as “All in the Family” and “Maude,” was honored with the Pioneer Award.

NEW YORK — “Captain America” continued to flex its Marvel muscle at the global box office, as “The Winter Soldier” took in $41.4 million domestically and $60.6 million overseas. The strong second-week performance for the Walt Disney release in North America was enough to narrowly edge 20th Century Fox’s “Rio 2” in a springtime battle of sequels. The animated Amazon jungle tale “Rio 2” debuted with $39 million, according to studio estimates Sunday, almost exactly the opening weekend total of the 2011 Oscar-nominated original. But “Captain America” has grown considerably in stature since its 2011 original, “The First Avenger.” With a

LOS ANGELES - The second installment of “The Hunger Games” saga dominated the MTV Movie Awards Sunday, with a best-film trophy and best actor awards for Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence. Hutcherson accepted the movie of the year trophy on behalf of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” while paying tribute to Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died in February and played the role Plutarch Heavensbee in the dystopian film series.

“I know that if Phillip were here, he would really think that this is very cool,” Hutcherson said. Hutcherson also took home the trophy for best male performance, while co-star Jennifer Lawrence, who was not present, won for best female.

Both also won in 2012 for the first movie in the series, and Lawrence had previously won in 2013 for “Silver Linings Playbook.” The MTV Movie Awards, hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien in Los Angeles, were based on public voting. The ceremony, famous for its off-the-wall award categories, passed out accolades for best kiss, best shirtless performance and best “#wtf moment,” among others. Drought, respiratory infection widespread

DENPASAR - When entering dry season, people must be vigilant to the disease of upper respiratory tract infection (ISPA). Based on data from the Bali Health Agency, this respiratory tract infection has started to increase in the community. A pediatrician of Wangaya Hospital, Wayan Retayasa, described the dry season caused the hot and dusty air. Supported by pollution it kindled many viruses causing the upper respiratory tract inspection to scatter. “The spread of virus through the air causes the respiratory diseases to easily infect from one person

to another,” he said. The upper respiratory tract infection could possibly recover by itself when one’s endurance was good. However, according to Retayasa, the upper respiratory tract disease could be threatening and causing death if it infected infant, in this case a toddler under the age of one year. Moreover,

the toddler’s immune system was in a state of decline. Further, Retayasa worried if the upper respiratory tract infection afflicted the infants and infected the lower respiratory tract as it could cause bronchitis or bronchopneumonia. “The toddler will experience a disruption in the lungs and experience shortness of

breath so that it potentially leads to death,” he said. Characteristics of the toddlers experiencing shortness of breath due to lower respiratory tract infection were breathing fast, strong pull in the chest cavity and nostrils flared quickly. If these symptoms had appeared, the patient should be immediately rushed to hospital to get immediate treatment. On that account, the precautions were required so the toddlers would not be infected by

viruses of the upper respiratory tract infection. He explained that when an adult was infected by the upper respiratory tract diseases, it should stay away from toddlers and small children as well as should use facial mask to prevent the spread of the virus through droplets or saliva. “Besides, it is also required a measure to take care of the body with nutritious food and drink a plenty of water as well as take enough rest and exercise,” he said. DENPASAR - Dozens of contraband chickens were secured in Post II of the Gilimanuk Harbor, Sunday morning (Apr 13). The officers of the Integrated Agricultural Quarantine Office at Gilimanuk and Gilimanuk Marine Police secured the illegal poultry put in a plastic sack from a motorcycle taxi. At least 20 chickens belonging to Sanian and Misiya from Banyuwangi were put into a plastic sack and transported by motorcycle taxi. The motorcycle taxi was passing around 04:00 in

the morning. As planned, the chickens would be sold in the Gilimanuk Market. Police suspected the plastic sack as it was seen moving. In addition to live chickens, the owner also brought a plastic sack of chicken flesh. However, the chicken flesh was without the necessary delivery document. A few minutes later, the officers secured another 20 kampong chickens belonging to Sanian transported by a motorcycle taxi. In addition to dozens of chicken flesh, police also seized dozens of canary birds in the baggage of Malang Indah intercity bus with

license plate N 7329 UN. Having been checked, the box inspected in fact contained 12 birds and two roosters. However, no passengers claimed to own the birds and roosters. Afterward, police asked for information to the Gilimanuk Marine Police. Furthermore, the roosters and birds were handed over to the Integrated Agricultural Quarantine Office at Gilimanuk. Coordinator of the Quarantine Office, Nyoman Budiartha, justified the arrest. His party would examine the health condition of the poultry. (kmb26)

DENPASAR - The Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing Agency (DTRP) will definitely work on the construction of the central parking in the area of Lumintang civic center, Denpasar. The pattern of central parking built at this time will be slightly different from the existing one. As proof, this central parking will be built in the form of multi-storied basement. It will consist of two levels under the ground floor. It was disclosed by the Head of the Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing Agency, I Kadek Kusuma Diputra, when met in the mayor’s office, Thursday (Apr 10). This pattern was done to provide a fixed viewpoint of the main building, namely the Sewaka Dharma building. “If the building consists of two levels downwards, the height shall not exceed the main building,” he said when accompanied by the Division Head of Spatial Affairs, Gede Cipta Sudewa. Kusuma Diputra said the central parking would not accomplish within this year. At the first phase, his party would complete the basement parking only, while the building on it, namely the hall would not be made this year. Likely it would be worked on in stages because the funds spent on this project would be quite large. The first phase alone would cost around IDR 15 billion. The central parking would be able to accommodate about 170-200 cars, while motorcycle would be allocated for approximately 50 units. “Motorcycle will be centered in the north parking lot currently used for visitor parking to Lumintang civic center,” said Kusuma Diputra. Related to physical project this year, some had been under progress, particularly the works that did not pass through tenders or the projects with direct appointment. If the value was greater, it should pass through a tender and could not run yet because it was still under tender process. “Some physical projects worth less than IDR 100 million have been done,” he explained. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NEW YORK — The New York World’s Fair of 1964 introduced 51 million visitors to a range of technological innovations and predictions during its run. Fifty years later, some of those ideas have turned out to be commonplace in our world. Others? Not so much. What they had right: — “Picturephone”: Bell System introduced this innovation, which allowed people to see whom they were calling. It didn’t go over well at the time, but it’s a concept that’s an everyday part of our lives now in apps such as Skype and Facetime. — Personal use of the computer: Several pavilions had exhibits set up where visitors could ask computers for information and get responses in seconds. — Robotics: Walt Disney’s “It’s a Small World” exhibit introduced robotic animation in which characters sing, speak and make lifelike gestures such as smiles and blinks. It’s still in use in theme parks and movies today. — Ford Mustang: The two-seater sports car with its long hood and short rear deck was officially unveiled at the World’s Fair and immediately became popular. It has remained in production ever since. — Touch-tone phones: Originally introduced at the Seattle World’s Fair in 1962, this was still the first time many visitors were exposed to this technology. What they had wrong: — Colonies on the moon, underwater and in Antarctica: The “Futurama 2” ride from General Motors, which featured images of people living in places where they clearly don’t. — Paved-over rainforests: Another image from “Futurama 2” featured a machine that used a laser to cut through the rainforests and left behind paved roads. — Jet packs: There were demonstrations of jet pack power at the fair, with men wearing them and zooming around the grounds. Sadly, they remain a mode of transport found mainly in science fiction.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida — NASA is pressing ahead with Monday’s planned launch of a supply ship despite a critical computer outage at the International Space Station, determining the situation is safe. Mission managers decided Sunday to proceed with the countdown for the SpaceX Dragon capsule, already a month late in delivering more than 2 tons of cargo. “We’re good to go,” said NASA space station program manager Mike Suffredini. Suffredini noted the many important supplies aboard the Dragon, including a new spacesuit and repair parts for the older spacesuits already in orbit. Much-needed food is also packed away. “There’s a certain amount of urgency to go ahead and get these vehicles” at the space station, Suffredini told reporters. These shipments have to fit around other space station operations, like crew comings and goings. “Things start to bunch up,” Suffredini said, “and so we’re just trying to fly as soon as we safely can, which is what we believe we’re doing.” This backup computer, located on the outside of the space

station, mysteriously failed to work when activated Friday. The main computer kept operating perfectly, and the six-man crew was never in any danger. NASA debated whether to delay the SpaceX mission and, on Sunday, determined the station has sufficient redundancy to safely support the visiting vessel. A spacewalk will be required, meanwhile, to replace the bad computer. Engineers don’t know why it failed. Suffredini said the spacewalk will be conducted by a pair of astronauts on April 22, using suits outfitted with new fan components to avoid the near-disaster that occurred last summer. An Italian astronaut almost drowned when his helmet flooded with water from the suit’s cooling system. An April 22 spacewalk will give SpaceX two chances to get its unmanned Dragon capsule flying. Good weather is forecast for Monday’s 4:58 p.m. (2058 GMT) launch. If that doesn’t work, the next launch attempt for the Cali-

fornia company’s Falcon rocket would come Friday. NASA rushed material for the computer replacement job to the Cape Canaveral launch site over the weekend, for packing into the Dragon. While not essential, the gasket-like item will make the task easier for the astronauts. For the past few years, NASA has been paying SpaceX — Space Exploration Technologies Corp. — and Virginia-based Orbital Sciences Corp. to keep the station well stocked. The need arose after the space shuttles — NASA’s workhorses for station shipments — were retired in 2011. Russia, Europe and Japan also make occasional deliveries. As soon as the Dragon soars, the space station’s solar panels will be moved into the proper position for its arrival, Suffredini said. That will guard against any complications resulting from additional computer breakdowns. Luckily, the sun’s angle is favorable right now for thermal conditions at the outpost, he noted.

DENPASAR - From January to March 2014, the Denpasar Social and Labor Agency could surpass the revenue target of foreign worker permit (IMTA) at IDR 2.5 billion whereas the previous target was only IDR 1 billion a year. Therefore, the income until the end of this December is predicted to rise. The Head of Denpasar Social and Labor Agency, Made Erwin Suryadarma Sena, said the income of the foreign worker permit had been already high, even doubled. It was also supported by the unpaid levies by foreign workers in 2013. “Rising income of the foreign worker permit happened because the data collection of foreign workers working in Denpasar that have not fulfilled their obligations was already made,” added Erwin. Since the enactment of the Regional Bylaw on the foreign worker

permit in 2013, Erwin confirmed that his party had conducted a meeting with relevant agencies, such as police, immigration, municipal police, legal division of Denpasar municipality, population and civil registry office as well as revenue service. It was intended to perform discipline and founding to foreign workers working in Denpasar. The control and founding targeted the companies that employed foreign workers. “We have come to the companies to verify whether the foreign workers working in the

company are appropriate with the data sent to Social and Labor Agency,” he said. He added that it was aimed at exploring the existing potential. In addition, the foreign workers working in Denpasar were really recorded, so there was nothing illegal. For example, a company employed 6 foreign workers, but it only reported two workers so it would result in data manipulation. “We also make a coaching schedule to companies employing foreign workers. Meanwhile, the number of foreign workers was very fluctuating, depending on the extension of foreign worker permits. Bali to hold fifth mass vaccination campaign Antara

DENPASAR - Bali will hold the fifth mass vaccination campaign against rabies starting April 15, targeting stray dogs, according to Putu Sumantra, the head of the Bali animal husbandry and health office. The system this year, to be applied during the campaign, will be different from the ones held in previous campaigns, he stated. This time, they will target stray dogs wandering in hilly and mountainous areas particularly, and puppies, which have been vaccinated before. “Vaccination will also be given to puppies to protect and strengthen their immunity. rabies-free by the year 2015, in order to maintain its reputation as the world’s most famous resort island. Over the past few years, the Bali

authorities have routinely carried out mass vaccination programs against rabies, targeting stray as well as domestic dogs.

According to him, the rainfall intensity was high enough since one o’clock causing the flow of water in the bottom of the garden to be large enough so it eroded the garden retaining wall. The move comes after crews picked up a series of underwater sounds over the past two weeks that were consistent with an aircraft’s black boxes, which contain flight data and cockpit voice recordings. Citigroup cuts 200-300 jobs NEW YORK - US bank Citigroup has cut between 200 and 300 additional jobs, most in the global markets business, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday. Some of the employees were fired, while others left voluntarily. Among them was Steve Prince, the younger brother of former chief executive Charles Prince, according to the newspaper. Prince’s LinkedIn profile says he is a senior vice president for marketing and advertising. The cuts account for about two percent of the global markets business, it added, citing a person familiar with the matter. Citigroup refused to comment on the report. “We continue to tightly manage expenses, making targeted headcount reductions in light of current market conditions,” spokeswoman Danielle Romero-Apsilos said in a statement. “At the same time, we are adding some talent strategically, leveraging our unique global footprint to serve our clients.” The layoffs come as Citigroup cuts expenses in its business units as the banking industry adjusts to new regulation and loan demand. On Friday, JP Morgan reported that trading revenue dropped 17 percent in the first quarter, a trend Citigroup has warned it could follow. Late last year, Citigroup had 251,000 employees, a far cry from its 323,000 employees in late 2008 at the height of the financial crisis.

Based on a story of word to mouth, the Sengawang Temple or also known as Dalem Sengawang Temple poses a temple standing in the middle of an area called Sengawang hamlet formerly inhabited just by nine people. It is said that once upon a time there was an internal conflict in the royal family of Perean Kingdom so the king left the palace with a pregnant wife. They did not know where to go. At dawn, they heard

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas Three people, including a 14-year-old boy, were killed on Sunday at two different Jewish community facilities in the Kansas City area, and a man was in custody as police investigated whether the shootings were anti-Semitic, authorities said. Police said it was too early to determine a motive, but a leading anti-hate group said the suspect arrested in the shooting was a longtime anti-Semite. “We know it’s a vicious act of violence. Obviously two Jewish facilities, one might make that assumption,” Overland Park Police Chief John Douglass told a news conference. The FBI has been called in to help with the investigation, he said. The suspect was identified as Frazier Glenn Cross, Jr., 73, by authorities in Kansas, and by the Southern Poverty Law Center as Frazier Glenn Miller, a longtime anti-Semite who is the former grand dragon of the Carolina Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. detention center on suspicion of premeditated murder in the first degree and was scheduled to appear in court on Monday afternoon, according to jail records. The shootings started around 1 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City in Overland Park, Kansas. Two men were shot in a parking lot outside the center, one dying at the scene and the other at a hospital later, police said. The shooter then drove a mile (1.6 km) away to the Village Shalom retirement community that offers skilled nursing services and fatally shot a woman there, Douglass said. The two male victims were identified as Reat Griffin Underwood, 14, a high school freshman, and his grandfather, Dr. William Corporon, family member Will Corporon said in a statement. Both were members of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection. Underwood was an Eagle Scout and loved camping and hunting with family, Corporon said. Dr. Corporon had moved to the Kansas City area in 2003 to be closer

527 DNA tests planned over French high school rape

PARIS — Male students and staff at a high school in western France — 527 people in total — were asked to give DNA samples beginning Monday as police search for the assailant who raped a teenage girl. The La Rochelle prosecutor’s office said tests were expected to last from Monday through Wednesday at Fenelon-Notre Dame high school, where the 16-year-old was sexually assaulted Sept. 30 in a dark bathroom. Police recovered genetic material from the girl’s clothing, but it had no matches in the national DNA database. “This happened during the school day in a confined space,” Chantal Devaux, the private Roman Catholic school’s director, said in interviews with French media. “The decision to take such a large sample was made because it was the only way to advance the investigation.” Summonses went out last week to 475 students, 31 teachers and 21 others — either staff or males who were on campus at the time. The cost to analyze the samples is estimated to total 5,000 euros ($6,900) Devaux acknowledged that all the results could come back negative, sending investigators back to the drawing board. France has an extensive DNA database, with a total of 2 million profiles kept on file as of 2012, and refusing a test can be used against suspects in court.

JAKARTA - Education and Culture Minister Mohammad Nuh has asked the people to report any fraud in the implementation of national examinations, to the authorities. “You must report it (fraud) if you find fraud or leakage of exam papers,” the minister stated, when conducting an unscheduled visit to SMAN 112 secondary school here on Monday. However, he ensured that it was difficult to leak the question papers because officials carried out very tight supervision. Distribution of exam logistics was supervised by the police. Moreover, he noted that in one classroom there were some 20 variations of different exam questions and so, exam takers could not abuse them. “The important thing is that we should not think of fraud because it will only smear the image of our education system. Should there really be leakage of question papers or deceit, you should report it,” the minister reiterated. Beginning on Monday, all upper secondary schools (SMA/ senior high schools, MS/religious high schools, SMK/vocational schools) and Packet C students are appearing for the national examinations across three days until April 6, totaling to 2.8 million students. With regard to the distribution of exam logistics, the minister added, “We have reports from various regions that they have all received exam papers.” He explained that the distribution of the exam logistics began from Jakarta to the provinces from where they were further distributed to the districts and rayon levels. rabies-free by the year 2015, in order to maintain its reputation as the world’s most famous resort island. Over the past few years, the Bali

authorities have routinely carried out mass vaccination programs against rabies, targeting stray as well as domestic dogs.
