Next ‘Fantastic Beasts’ movie thrills fans with return to Hogwarts LOS ANGELES - The second of the “Fantastic Beasts” movie spinoffs from author J.K. Rowling includes scenes set in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, directly connecting the story to the best-selling “Harry Potter” books and films, a first movie trailer on Tuesday showed. The trailer for Warner Bros’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” to be released in November, also gave fans a first glimpse of actor Jude Law as a dapper, bearded, young version of Hogwarts’ venerable headmaster Albus Dumbledore, and featured parts of the famous “Harry Potter” music score. The “Harry Potter” spinoff, which will eventually include five movies, is set some 70 years before Harry Potter went to the British boarding school and learned to become a wizard. The “Crimes of Grindelwald” trailer was the first to show Hogwarts as part of the “Fantastic Beasts” story, which centers around Newt Scamander, a “magizoologist” with a suitcase full of strange creatures. “omg Hogwarts!! YouTube after watching the trailer. “Omg... I was dying... Like Hogwarts is magical... The first movie, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” which was written by Rowling, made $814 million at the global box offices after it was released in November 2016. Rowling has said she thinks of the younger Dumbledore as a gay man who fell in love with Gellert Grindelwald, who later turned out to be evil and violent. In the trailer, Dumbledore is shown in a Hogwarts classroom, and later telling actor Eddie Redmayne’s Scamander: “I can’t move against Grindelwald. NEW YORK - Miley Cyrus was sued for $300 million on Tuesday by a Jamaican songwriter who said the pop singer’s 2013 smash “We Can’t Stop” closely resembles a song he recorded 25 years earlier, and that she is infringing his copyright.

He accused Cyrus and her label RCA Records, owned by Sony Corp, of misappropriating his material, including the phrase “We run things. Things no run we,” which she sings as “We run things. Things don’t run we.” Representatives for Cyrus, 25, did not immediately respond to requests
for comment. A spokeswoman for Sony did not immediately respond to a similar request. May said he sought to protect his work last year with the U.S. Copyright Office, and in November won “formal copyright protection” for all musical arrangements in “We Run Things.” He said Cyrus’ song “owes the basis of its chart-topping popularity to and its highly-lucrative success to plaintiff May’s protected, unique, creative and original content.” The Kingston, Jamaica resident is also seeking a halt to further sales and
performances of “We Can’t Stop,” according to his complaint filed with the U.S. District Court in Manhattan. While the complaint did not specify damages, May’s lawyers in a press statement described it as a $300 million case. “We Can’t Stop,” from Cyrus’ album “Bangerz,” peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 2013. Physicist Stephen Hawking, who unlocked the secrets of space and time, dies at 76
LONDON - Stephen Hawking, who sought to explain some of the most complicated questions of life while working under the shadow of a likely premature death, has died at 76. He died peacefully at his home in the British university city of Cambridge in the early hours of Wednesday. “We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today,” his children Lucy, Robert and Tim said in a statement. Hawking’s formidable mind probed the very limits of human understanding both in the vastness of space and in the bizarre sub-molecular world of quantum theory, which he said could predict what happens at the beginning and end of time. His work ranged from the origins of the universe, through the
tantalising prospect of time travel to the mysteries of space’s allconsuming black holes. “He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years,” his family said. “His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world.” The power of his intellect contrasted cruelly with the weakness of his body, ravaged by the wasting
motor neurone disease he developed at the age of 21. Hawking was confined for most of his life to a wheelchair. As his condition worsened, he had to resort to speaking through a voice synthesiser and communicating by moving his eyebrows. The disease spurred him to work harder but also contributed to the collapse of his two marriages, he wrote in a 2013 memoir “My Brief History.” In the book he related how he was first diagnosed: “I felt it was very unfair - why should this happen to me,” he wrote. “At the time, I thought my life was over and that I would never realize the potential I felt I had. But now, 50 years later, I can be quietly satisfied
with my life.” Hawking shot to international fame after the 1988 publication of ““A Brief History of Time”, one of the most complex books ever to achieve mass appeal, which stayed on the Sunday Times best-sellers list for no fewer than 237 weeks. He said he wrote the book to convey his own excitement over recent discoveries about the universe. ““My original aim was to write a book that would sell on airport bookstalls,” he told reporters at the time. ““In order to make sure it was understandable I tried the book out on my nurses. I think they understood most of it.” He was particularly proud

Peguyangan village starts melasti on Padanggalak Beach
DENPASAR - Series of the tawur kesanga and Nyepi Day of Caka New Year 1940 was commenced with melasti (purificatory) procession. This melasti activity is carried out by each customary village as a symbol of sanctifying the universe as well as human self located to the sea as well as other water sources as seen on Padanggalak Beach, Kesiman, on Tuesday (Mar. 13).
Peguyangan customary village started the process of pemelastian on Padanggalak Beach. Thousands of customary villagers came by using dozens of vehicles thronged the black sandy beach. “Since two years ago, we have agreed to perform melasti earlier considering if done three days before Nyepi, it will be too crowded. Other customary villages also preferred that day,” said one of the customary security guards (pecalang) of Peguyangan, Wayan Sumarta, last Tuesday. According to him, preparation of the melasti has been done since Monday (Mar. 12). Last Tuesday, they started from their village to the beach from six o’clock in the morning. In addition to pratima (sanctified effigies) of Puseh/Desa and Bale Agung temple of the local village, some temples across Peguyangan village also joined the melasti (purificatory) procession to Padanggalak. After performing the purification ritual and ending with saying prayers together, the people returned to uphold the sanctified effigies and other sacred paraphernalia. Around 09:30, the pemelastian process of
the customary village already completed. Meanwhile, as seen on Sunrise Beach and Bali Beach, Sanur, on Tuesday afternoon there were no entourages performing melasti procession. “Maybe tomorrow (Wednesday—Ed) many people will do melasti here. But so far, there is no,” said one of the ticket attendants on Sunrise Beach. In addition to Padanggalak Beach, Sunrise Beach and Bali Beach, Sanur, and several other beaches become the melasti destination of customary villages in Denpasar. Besides, several beach points in Denpasar are also taken advantage as venue of melasti, including the Segara Beach, Mertasari Beach, Pamelisan Beach, Suwung Kangin, Benoa Beach (near Akame) as well as the east of Candi Narmada temple. From a number of destinations of melasti, Padanggalak Beach the most widely used. This beach is usually used by some customary villages such as the Peguyangan Kaja, Peguyangan Kangin, Peguyangan, Dauh Puri Kaja, Poh Gading, Ubung Kaja, Ubung, Tonja, Sumerta Kaja, Kesiman Petilan, Penatih Dangin Puri, Penatih, Sumerta Kauh, Kesiman Kertalangu, Sumerta and Kesiman. Meanwhile, the customary village of Dangin Puri Kelod chose Sindu Beach to perform its melasti. Sunrise Beach is used as the melasti destination by Sumerta Kelod and Sanur Kaja. Segara Beach is used by Sanur village, Sanur Kauh, and Renon. Mertasari Beach is used by Sidakarya village, while Sesetan chooses the Jalan Pamelisan of Suwung Batan Kendal. Magmatic chamber system of Mount Agung unstable yet
AMLAPURA - The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) acknowledged that volcanic activities of Mount Agung had slightly increased as marked with a sequence of earthquakes since the past two weeks. The increase in volcanic activities occurred because the magmatic chamber system of the volcano with the height of 3.142 meters above sea level has not been stable Head of the PVMBG Mitigation Division, I Gede Suantika, said on Tuesday (Mar. 13) that the recent tectonic earthquakes occurred locally were triggered by tectonic activities of Bali-NTB-NTT. The triggering factor is getting stronger following the earthquake with the magnitude of more than 5.0 in Richter Scales centered in Lombok and NTB some time ago. Mount Agung instantly reacted to the sequence of the earthquakes because the magmatic chamber system is not yet stable. Once getting tectonic pressure, the magmatic chamber immediately responded. “The increased activity occurred in the crater of the mountain,” he said. Despite the slight increase in activities, the impact of the current crater activities of Mount Agung is in the form of thin and white solfatara. Dominant
blast of the solfatara is weak. Even if there is ash eruption, the intensity is small as it happened last Sunday night. The ash column created from the blast only reached a height of 800 meters. Based on these facts, Suantika asserted that currently the danger zone remains in the radius of 4 km from the peak of the mountain, beyond the radius is declared to be safe. Meanwhile, volcanic activities in the form of blast still continue. Based on information of the Magma VAR within the past 12 hours until 16:00, at least there are six times of blast with maximum amplitude of 8 mm and maximum duration of 65 seconds. Monitoring devices at Rendang Observation Post also noted the existence of shallow volcanic, deep volcanic and far tectonic earthquakes. In addition to the recommendation on the danger radius of 4 km, the PVMBG continued to give emphasis to the people living around the river flow having the upstream on Mount Agung. Communities were asked to always be aware of the threat of secondary danger of rain lava flows that can occur in the rain as happened in the past few days. Sanglah Hospital services undisturbed, except BPJS Kesehatan
DENPASAR - Mobile data (internet) has been confirmed to be disconnected on Nyepi Day celebration. However, Sanglah Hospital Denpasar whose operation is inseparable from the use of Internet to support its information technology ascertained if the services will not be disturbed by the policy. Division Head of Information Technology of Sanglah Hospital, Yohannes Yanson Purnawan, explained the system at Sanglah Hospital is not directly related to the internet, but using a local intranet. “Our system applies local system, so our system at the hospital is not directly connected to the internet. Local users can still use the system fully. We use local intranet only,” he said on Tuesday (Mar. 13). Sanglah Hospital has built information technology system independently since 2016. Previously, it teamed up with partners. According to him, there is no health service activity in Sanglah Hospital that will be disrupted by the disconnection of cellular data or internet except the BPJS Kesehatan. It services still require internet access such as in the printing of BPJS Kesehatan guarantee
letter. “This process must indeed use the internet connection,” he said. Online registration made by Sanglah Hospital to facilitate patients to get outpatient services, said Yanson, will automatically get disconnected or blocked during Saturday, Sunday, and holidays. So, especially ahead of Nyepi Day, people can only make online registration until Thursday (Mar. 15). “When making online registration, the system is automatically blocked on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Business hours return to open on Monday to Friday. Because in relation to Nyepi, this Friday is holiday, so people can only make online registration until Thursday. People then can return to get the services after Nyepi,” he said. Until Tuesday afternoon, the number of patient visits to Sanglah Hospital almost doubled. From an average of 900-1,000 visits per day, it suddenly increased to 1,800 visits. He could not confirm the cause. Bolivian women weave devices to patch holes in hearts
LA PAZ - A team of Bolivian women are using indigenous Aymara weaving patterns to craft devices that can help repair heart defects, doctors involved in developing the device report in JAMA.
The device is woven from a nickel-titanium alloy that can be collapsed and delivered within a catheter to the heart, where it’s then expanded to repair a hole. Traditional Aymara weavers repeat an Andean cross or chakana symbol up to 120 times to craft the device, called Nit-Occlud ASD-R. “To my knowledge, it is the first time metal weaving is used for medical devices in Bolivia,” said lead study author Dr. Alexandra Heath of Kardiozentrum in La Paz, Bolivia in email to Reuters Health. “It is surprising, that these women, after a training, can assume the task brilliantly,” said Heath, who has received consulting fees from the device manufacturer PFM Medical. Heart defects are more common at high altitudes, possibly because of the effects of low oxygen, Heath and colleagues write. In La Paz, at an altitude of 12,000 feet (4,000 meters), cardiologists often encounter kids with defects that involve holes in the heart. Many commercially available devices can be used to patch these holes, and open heart surgery is also an option. Developers sought to create an alternative device using local craftswomen in part because open heart surgery is an option in Bolivia only for the most extreme cases. Commercial devices to repair holes in the heart are
made from woven mesh discs that expand to fill the defective area. Developers of the hand-woven device thought they might be able to train local weavers to craft something similar. Engineers teamed with weavers to identify the best pattern and materials for the device. Now, a team of about 40 craftswomen who went through four months of training weave devices that meet specific requirements for quality control, sterilization and proper chemical treatment. The Nit-Occlud ASD-R has been approved to repair heart defects in adults and children by regulators in Canada, Europe, and South America. It is not approved in the U.S. This hand-crafted device essentially copies existing devices which are made in developed countries by “weaving” machines, said Dr. John Moore, director of cardiology at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, California. Moore is involved in a study of a device by PFM Medical and has been compensated for work with two other device companies, 480 Biomedical Corporation and Transmural Systems. “In Bolivia, where the art of hand weaving is widespread and very developed and the economy is underdeveloped, it may be cost-effective to produce such devices by hand,” Moore said by email. “This is certainly not the case in developed countries,” Moore added. “Similar machine made devices have been FDA approved for more than 15 years and are used widely in the developed and for that matter in the developing world.” (rtr)
NEW YORK - Older adults who are socially isolated may not necessarily see doctors or visit health clinics more often than their peers who have close ties to many friends and family members, a research review suggests. When their health takes a turn for the worse, however, older people without strong social relationships may be more likely to have long hospital stays and repeat hospitalizations, researchers report in the American Journal of Public Health. “It is evident that strong social relationships (i.e., large social network, close interpersonal connection and adequate social support) are beneficial to health and wellbeing,” said Dr. Guohua Li, a researcher at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in New York. “It is less clear about the mechanisms through which social relationships affect health outcomes such as (medical complications) and mortality,” Li, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. There are, however, many possible explanations, said Ben Lennox Kail, a sociology and gerontology researcher at Georgia State University in Atlanta who wasn’t involved in the study.
For starters, people with few close relationships with friends or relatives may be more likely to suffer from depression or other mental health issues than individuals with expansive social networks, Kail said by email. “People who are not particularly well socially integrated may have poorer mental health or wellbeing, which may lead to poorer physical health, which may make longer hospital stays and more repeat visits more necessary,” Kail said. “That said, if this were the primary explanation, we might expect to see more regular doctor’s visit – and we don’t,” Kail added. Instead, it’s possible that people without friends and family to rely on might benefit more from longer hospital stays where they can get extra support from nurses, Kail said. OJK applies fintech characteristic approach and transparency MANGUPURA - Financial technology (fintech) related policy is targeted to be completed in the first half of 2018 considering the rapid development of fintech. There are currently 36 registered fintech companies and one of them has been licensed. Meanwhile, the companies under the process of registration amount to 42. Vice Chairman of the Financial Services Authority (OJK), Nurhaida, said the development of fintech in Indonesia is quite significant and grows very fast. Therefore, OJK is building a regulation that can govern the fintech ecosystem. The regulation is scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2018. However, she is optimistic that it can be completed in the first quarter. However, if the process still takes time, the authority will issue in the first half of 2018. Before finalizing the regulation, the OJK wants to get input from various countries in arranging the fintech as globally the terms of fintech vary. “There are countries adopting the prudential approach system, while some others are adopting the direction on how to regulate transparency,” she said in the press conference of the International Seminar on Fintech Policies and Regulation at Sofitel Nusa Dua on Monday (Mar. 12). By looking at various regulatory systems in different countries, the OJK decided to govern with the fintech characteristic approach and prioritizes transparency. It hoped that fintech can provide a useful openness for both lenders and borrowers. Particular concern in the fintech supervision is consumer protection. This consumer protection involves two points, namely the interests and data of consumers. “These are our points in regulating the fintech later on,” she said. In the previous OJK regulation namely the POJK 77 governed more on the peer-to-peer lending. Peer-to-peer lending is the company that provides a platform to bring together lenders with borrowers. Both parties are said to have a risk of losses. “Most importantly, the transparency must be clear. So, this fintech companies must believe that consumer transparency in terms of the borrower and the transparency of the lenders should be clear,” she explained. With the transparency, the loss risk is expected to be minimized. “Borrowers and lenders can choose the existing data with the presence of transparency. Information about borrower can be opened in the platform and then the lender determines who will be given the loan, so the risk of loss can be minimized,” she explained. Deputy of Commissioner of the Indonesia Financial Services Authority, Sukarela Batunanggar, explained that fintech arrangement, although the spirit is the same as the existing financial service institutions (LJK) like bank, in its approach it is adjusted to business model and fintech characteristic. The bank’s risk lies in the financial institution and the users’ side. In the meantime, the risk of fintech is between peer to peer because it serves as a platform. So, with the presence of transparency, education and financial literacy, self-governance, market discipline of the industry, it is expected to be able to reduce risks. “We want to build a responsible attitude from the industry side, and the users to create a trust,” she said. Considering the fintech grows very fast, the basic rules need to be arranged. The OJK only governs the policies like the minimum compliance with fintech standards. All the fintech companies must register to OJK because not all fintech companies are included in the category of financial service institutions. Lesser Sunda Museum
Center for history and new destination education in Buleleng
SINGARAJA — After quite a long time becoming a discourse, Buleleng finally started to establish the Lesser Sunda (Sunda Kecil) Museum. With the funding support from the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2017 valued at IDR 1.2 billion, the Lesser Sunda Museum was established with the collection reaching 20 percent. Although the collection is not yet complete, historians consider the museum becomes the source of historical education for pupils, students, researchers and general public. Besides, this museum is worth becoming a tourist attraction in Singaraja town.
Lesser Sunda Museum utilizes the former harbor office building in the Dutch colonial era located in the ex-harbor area of Buleleng at Kampung Tinggi. On Tuesday (Mar. 13), the Buleleng Culture Agency officially launched the museum with the presence of Regional Secretary of Buleleng, Dewa Ketut Puspaka, representing the Regent of Buleleng Putu Agus Suradnyana. Besides, the event was also attended by Director General of Museum Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Ministry of Education and Culture, Harry Widianto, Head of the Buleleng Culture Agency, Putu Tastra Wijaya and other related agencies. Historian who is also an academician of Undiksha Singaraja, I Made Pageh, said that Lesser Sunda Museum plays a central role in the history education in Buleleng. This happens because the museum displays some historical evidences where in the past the civic center of Lesser Sunda had the administrative areas including Bali, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). In addition, in this museum is also kept historical evidences where the Lesser Sunda town itself was once led by a governor general from Buleleng having established to be a National Hero, namely I Gusti Ketut Pudja. “As a historian and getting involved in the initiative of the museum establishment, I am prideful that Buleleng once served as a civic center of Bali and NTT and NTB. It is also becomes the main source of history for students, researchers, tourists and the general public,” he said. According to Pageh, in terms of collection, the Lesser Sunda Museum actually does not require a lot of collections like other museums in general. history and administrative territory of Bali, NTT, and NTB displayed in the museum. Other than in the form of book or other historical documents, it also needs to be completed with audio visual. With such a modest collection, he is confident it has been enough to give a historical picture about the administration of Governor General of Lesser Sunda held by I Gusti Ketut Puja. Based on the information, the main target is how visitors or other interested parties can know more about the history. They can come directly to see the area of origin what happened in NTT or NTB including in Bali itself. “If analogized to a book, this museum only carries the table of contents. Then, when wishing to know about contents, they can visit first the regions belonging to Lesser Sunda administrative area. On that account, this museum does not need to have a lot of collections, but it is enough to have the master information about the NTB and NTT,” he explained. This considers that location of the museum is in the area of former Harbor of Buleleng. The museum area is also worth supporting the historical attractions in North Bali. “It is very appropriate to be made into tourist attraction in Singaraja town. Moreover, this area was a trading center in the North Coast of Bali which will certainly be interesting to be learned and known by tourists or researchers,” he explained. Meanwhile, Director General of Museum Affairs of Cultural Heritage, Ministry of Education and Culture, Harry Widianto, said the central government will fully support the development of Lesser Sunda Museum so it deserves to be a museum object. This support is in line with the wishes of the district government to complete the collection in the form of painting of I Gusti Ketut Puja, tables, chairs, bookshelves and statues that have got permission from the family to be kept in the museum. “We have to give the support, not only because of its history, but the building itself deserves to be made into a cultural heritage as it retains historical aspects and has aged more than 50 years. Having no guide identity card, three tour guides ensnared in Ubud raid
GIANYAR - A number of tour guides were ensnared in Ubud area on Tuesday (Mar. 13). The raid organized by joint officers of the Bali Municipal Police with Directorate of Public Community Development of Bali Police and the Bali Transportation Agency managed to ensnared three tour guides having no tour guides identity card (KTPP). Section Head of the Bali Municipal Police Research and Investigation, I Ketut Pongres, said the joint officers opened two post points, namely at parking area of Dalem Puri temple and in the area of Ubud Palace. “When the tour
guides come with their guests, we immediately summon them and ask to present their KTPP,” he said. During the implementation of the raid, a total of 21 tour guides were netted. Well, among all the tour guides, three people have no
KTPP. They are declared to have violated the provisions of Bali Regional Regulation No. 5/2016 on Tour Guides. The officers immediately issued a minute on the misdemeanor criminal act. “The unlicensed tour guides getting this
ticket are then asked to attend the trial in the Gianyar District Court,” he said. Through the raid, the joint officers also checked the tourist transport used to haul tourists to Ubud. SEOUL - Former South Korean president Lee Myung-bak appeared for questioning on Wednesday over allegations he took bribes when he was in office, following months of investigations into his family and acquaintances over the graft charges. Lee made his way before hundreds of reporters waiting outside the prosecutors’ office to ask him questions in the latest top-level political corruption scandal to rock the country. “I stand before you today with a tragic heart. I offer my deepest apology to the people for causing worry amid times when the economy is in hardship and the situation surrounding the Korean peninsula is serious,” Lee said. “I have much to say as a former president, but I keep telling myself I should refrain from saying much,” he added. Lee faces almost 20 charges and the prosecution believe he took around 11 billion won unlawfully from a number of institutions and individuals including the country’s National Intelligence Service and Samsung Group [SAGR.UL]. Prosecutors last month sought a 30-year jail term for former
president Park Geun-hye, Lee’s successor, who was ousted last year amid an influence-peddling scandal and is standing trial on charges of bribery, abuse of power and coercion. Lee has denied any wrongdoing, calling the investigation into the bribery allegations politically motivated by prosecutors under the incumbent liberal administration. The former president was in office from 2008 to 2013 before his successor, Park, won her presidency. Last month, Seoul prosecutors searched the offices of Samsung Electronics as part of the investigation, the prosecutors’ office said. They were looking for possible evidence that Samsung provided financial support in litigation fees for an auto parts maker called DAS, run by Lee’s family and allegedly controlled by him, the prosecutors’ office said. Samsung has offered no official comment on the matter. Lee has said DAS is run by his elder brother, Lee Sang-eun. The heir to parent Samsung Group, Jay Y. TOKYO - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday remained steadfast that he and his wife were not involved in a discount land-sale deal that has seen the opposition call for the resignation of his key ally, Finance Minister Taro Aso. Abe and Aso have come under fresh pressure over the ministry’s admission this week that it had altered documents related to the sale of state-owned land at a steep discount to a school operator with ties to Abe’s wife, Akie. Suspicion of a cover-up could slash Abe’s ratings and dash his hopes for a third term as leader of his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Victory in the LDP September leadership vote would put him on track to become Japan’s longest-serving premier. Copies of documents released by the finance ministry on Monday showed that references to Abe, his wife and Aso were removed from the ministry’s records of the sale to school operator Moritomo Gakuen. “When you look at the documents even before they were altered, it is clear that my wife and I were not involved,” Abe told an upper house budget committee on

BUSINESS China’s regulators compete to look tough as political pressure mounts

BEIJING - China’s financial watchdogs are pushing for harsher rules and stepping up action against miscreants, spurred on by official pressure on them to curb risk in the financial system, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the situation. Officials at the central bank, as well as at the banking, insurance and securities regulators, have been stepping up their enforcement activities, which have been under increased scrutiny since late last year, the sources told Reuters.
Regulatory officials worry they may get into trouble for not acting fast enough or being tough enough on financial institutions, the sources said. But senior industry sources say some of the new regulations, such as the central bank’s new rules restricting asset management, are unnecessarily harsh and can may hurt the development of the financial system and the economy. President Xi Jinping has made it clear that the Communist Party must strengthen its leadership of the financial industry, which he says is key to national security. The party is preparing a major overhaul of the country’s financial regulatory structure as it makes prevention of financial risk a top priority for the next three years. On Tuesday, China said it would merge the banking and insurance regulators and transfer some of their current roles to the central bank. Much of the political pressure is coming from officials from the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) who were installed at the regulators late last year, according to the sources with knowledge of the situation. Originally tasked with rooting out officials engaged in corrupt practices, the inspectors are now expanding the scope of their activities, the sources said. The inspectors are now also participating in internal discussions on drafting rules and implementing policy, they said. Financial regulatory officials are being told to submit work materials unrelated to corruption to graft busters for review, sources with three different regulators said. Some officials have been criticized for lacking “teeth”, one of the sources said. “They’re looking at almost everything, from regulation to the dining hall,” the source said. “It’s not just corruption-related. It’s everything. Where is the boundary?” The CCDI, central bank, and the banking, insurance and securities regulators didn’t immediately respond to requests seeking comment. Xu Jia’ai, who in September was named head of the central bank’s disciplinary inspection unit, wrote in a report in February that collusion between “cats and rats” - referring to regulators and the financial institu-

The sources also said that many of the appointees had little experience in the financial sector. “These people have no exposure or existing relations with the financial industry,” said Chen Long, China economist at Gavekal Dragonomics, speaking generally on the appointments. “That means they are more free to implement the anti-corruption mandates.” In the past senior officials were typically drawn from relevant sectors or government bodies. Xu established his credentials as a Zhejiang official, most recently serving as the head of the province’s Politics and Law Committee. At the China Banking Regulatory Commission, Zhou Liang, a former official with the discipline commission without finance experience according to his official resume, was appointed vice chairman in November. AVOID RESPONSIBILITY At the regulators, there is now a sharper focus on issuing greater volumes of tough financial regulations, the sources with knowledge of the situation said. “The anticorruption campaign is binding the hands and feet” of regulators, said one source at a
financial regulatory agency. At the China Securities Regulatory Commission, which said in November that it was stepping up supervision of officials responsible for initial public offering (IPO) approvals, the approval rate of IPO applications had markedly declined, two people working closely with the regulator said, citing applications of similar quality. “They are trying not to approve IPO applications in order to avoid responsibility,” said one of the people, referring to the officials at the regulator. “But China will lose many good companies to Hong Kong and New York capital markets if they continue to work this way.” REGULATION, NOT DEVELOPMENT The anti-corruption drive has been particularly intense at the China Insurance Regulatory Commission, whose former chairman, Xiang Junbo, last April became the highest-ranking finance industry official to be investigated for corruption. Since then, the commission has launched an internal movement calling for “cleaning up Xiang Junbo’s residual poisonous influence”. Staff were cautioned to avoid any personal interactions with the institutions they supervise, the sources said. For all the agencies, the paramount task is now regulation, rather than development of their industries, said Chen Xingdong, chief China economist at BNP Paribas. That assessment was echoed by a senior official at one of the financial regulatory bodies. “My job now is to regulate, not to develop,” the official said. In the past, a primary focus of regulators was attracting businesses in order to seek rapid expansion of the industries they oversaw, according to sources within the agencies. The new focus on tough regulation has led to some rare pushbacks by the financial industry. Last year, 10 banks objected to the People’s Bank of China’s move to tighten rules for the asset management sector, saying it could cause a rush of redemptions among other risks. The verification process will take place next June. Other than Terteran of Jasri village and Gebug Ende of Seraya village, said Suradnyani, the Bali Culture Office also recommended the Usaba Aci Sumbu of Timbrah village that involves thousands of roasted suckling pigs being presented as holy offerings. However, the recommendation failed to qualify at the national level because the administrative requirements were not complete. The Karangasem Culture an Tourism Agence will be improving the shortcomings of the application through the Bali Cultural Preservation Agency. This unique culture of Timbrah customary village will be proposed again to the central government through the recommendation of the Bali government along with the Geret Pandan tradition of Tenganan Pegeringsingan and Usaba Dangsil of Bungaya village. The latter two traditions are still being studied and documented in preparation for the proposal. Determination of the cultural property of Karangasem is necessary to avoid any claims to them that may be commited by other regions or countries.. Lately, cultural claim cases used to support tourism promotion of particular regions or countries are increasingly common. In addition, such recognistion is also importtant in order to ensure cultural preservation, so that hese traditions do not disspaear over the next ten years. (kmb)
Barong Enlivens Bukit Sari Sangeh Attraction
Bukit Sari Sangeh tourist attraction became the venue of cultural event entitled Sangeh Barong Festival. At least, there were 31 participants in the contest organized by Sari Guna customary village youth club, Sari hamlet, Sangeh, Badung. More interestingly, the participants were mostly young people of primary and junior high schools from different regions in Bali such as Bangli, Ubud (Gianyar), Sanur as well as of Petang, Mengwi, Bongkasa, Cemagi and Jimbaran (Badung). The Sangeh Barong Festival took place at the outermost courtyard of Pucak Sari Temple (in the woods) for two days (Dec. 17-18, 2016) starting at 19:00. On the first day it featured 15 participants and on the second day featured 16 participants. However, before the contest began, the organizer featured a guest star namely the single kid barong dance and single kid drum as a form of appreciation to young artist. Thus, it encouraged the vivacity of preserving the Balinese culture. Each barong dancer came with a
drum player as a partner. Nevertheless, each barong dancer and drum player is assessed by the jury panel. Each participant should present mask composition, Goak Macok, Playon Bongkasa, Omang and drum improvisation. They were given 15-20 minutes to make their performance. Atmosphere of the contest on the second day looked more festive because the Regent of Badung, Giri Prasta, came to watch and give encouragement. He also invited other young men to exemplify the implementation of the Sangeh Barong Festival. Regent highly supported the positive and innovative works of the Badung younger generation in the field of art or sport. On that account, the Regent Giri Prasta gave appreciation fund worth IDR 30 million and bonuses to each winner. At the festival, I Putu Dedik Sutyana (Ubud) was finally elected as the first winner of the barong dancer and followed by I Putu Eka Darmayasa (Cemagi) and Ida Bagus Alit (Sanur) respectively as the second and third winner. than receiving trophy and award, the winners also received cash prize and bonus from the regent of Badung valued at IDR 2.5 million and a bonus of IDR 2 million (first winner), IDR 2 million and bonus of IDR 1.5 million (second winner) and IDR 1.5 million and bonus of 1 million (third winner). Hawking’s popular recognition became such that he appeared as himself on the television show “Star Trek: Next Generation” and his cartoon caricature appeared on “The Simpsons”. A 2014 film, The Theory of Everything, with Eddie Redmayne playing Hawking, charted the onset of his illness and his early life as the brilliant student grappling with black holes and the concept of time. TWO CONCEPTS OF TIME
Since 1974 he worked extensively on marrying the two cornerstones of modern physics - Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity, which concerns gravity and large-scale phenomena, and quantum theory, which covers subatomic particles. As a result of that research, Hawking proposed a model of the universe based on two concepts of time: ““real time”, or time as human beings experience it, and “quantum theory’s “imaginary time”, on which the world may really run. “Imaginary time may sound like science fiction ... but it is a genuine scientific concept,” he wrote in a lecture paper. Real time could be perceived as a horizontal line, he said. “On the left, one has the past, and on the right, the future. But there’s another kind of time in the vertical direction. This is called imaginary
time, because it is not the kind of time we normally experience - but in a sense, it is just as real as what we call real time.” In July 2002, Hawking said in a lecture that although his quest was to explain everything, a theory of determinism that would predict the universe in the past and forever in the future probably could not be achieved. He caused some controversy among biologists when he said he saw computer viruses as a life form, and thus the human race’s first act of creation. ““I think it says something about human nature that the only form of life we have created so far is purely destructive,” he told a computer forum in Boston. ““We’ve created life in our own image.” He also predicted the development of a “race of self-designing human beings, who will use genetic engineering to improve their make-up. Another major area of his research was into black holes, the regions of space-time where gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape. When asked whether God had a place in his work, Hawking once said: ““In a way, if we understand the universe, we are in the position of God.” PERSONAL LIFE
His health, and accidents involving his wheelchair, including one where he broke his hip after crashing into a wall in December 2001 - “the wall won,” he observed - led to his appearing in the news for reasons other than his work. In 2004 he was
admitted to hospital in Cambridge suffering from pneumonia and was later transferred to a specialist heart and lung hospital. He was twice married and divorced. He married undergraduate Jane Wilde in July 1965 and the couple had three children, Robert, Lucy and Timothy. But Hawking tells in his 2013 memoir how Wilde became more and more depressed as her husband’s condition worsened. “She was worried I was going to die soon and wanted someone who would give her and the children support and marry her when I was gone,” he wrote. Wilde took up with a local musician and gave him a room in the family apartment, Hawking said. “I would have objected but I too was expecting an early death ...,” he said. He went on: “I became more and more unhappy about the increasingly close relationship between (them). In the end I could stand the situation no longer and in 1990 I moved out to a flat with one of my nurses, Elaine Mason.” He divorced Wilde in 1990 and in 1995 married Mason, whose ex-husband David had designed the electronic voice synthesiser that allowed him to communicate. “My marriage to Elaine was passionate and tempestuous,” he wrote in the memoir. “We had our ups and downs but Elaine’s being a nurse saved my life on several occasions.” It also took its emotional toll on her, he noted, and the pair divorced in 2007. The United States, European Union and NATO supported Britain after May said it was “highly likely” that Russia was behind the poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter with Novichok, a nerve agent developed by the Soviet military. Russia, which denied any involvement, said it was not responding to May’s ultimatum until it received samples of the nerve agent, effectively challenging Britain to show what sanctions it would impose against Russian interests. “Moscow will not respond to London’s ultimatum until it receives samples of the chemical substance,” Russia’s embassy in London said. “Any threat to take punitive measures against Russia will meet with a response.” A spokeswoman for the British Foreign Office declined immediate comment. Britain could call on Western allies for a coordinated response, freeze the assets of Russian business leaders and officials, limit their access to London’s financial centre, expel diplomats and even launch targeted cyber attacks. Russia is due to hold a presidential election on Sunday in which Vladimir Putin, himself a former KGB spy, is expected to coast to a fourth term in the Kremlin. U.S. President Donald Trump told May by telephone that Russia “must provide unambiguous answers regarding how this chemical weapon, developed in Russia, came to be used in the United Kingdom,” the White House said. Skripal, 66, and his daughter Yulia, 33, were found slumped unconscious on a bench outside a shopping centre in the genteel southern English city of Salisbury on March 4. They have been in a critical condition in hospital ever since. Scientists at Britain’s military research laboratory at Porton Down identified the poison as a military-grade nerve agent from a group of chemicals known as Novichok, which was first developed in the Soviet Union in the 1970s and 1980s. May said that either the Russian state had poisoned Skripal, a former officer with Russia’s GRU military intelligence, or that Russia had somehow lost control of its chemical weapons. Putin said last year that it had destroyed its last stockpiles of such weapons. A Russian chemist who helped develop the nerve agent said only the Russian government could have carried out the attack with such a deadly and advanced toxin. Vil Mirzayanov, 83, said he had no doubt that Putin was responsible, given that Russia maintains tight control over its Novichok stockpile and that the agent is too complicated for a non-state actor to have weaponised. “The Kremlin all the time, like all criminals, denying - it doesn’t mean anything,” Mirzayanov said in an interview in his home in Princeton, New Jersey, where he has lived in exile for more than 20 years. Skripal betrayed dozens of Russian agents to British intelligence before being arrested in Moscow and later jailed in 2006. He was released under a spy swap deal in 2010 and took refuge in Britain. Discrimination against women affects public health
JAKARTA - Dscrimination against women in various fields has an effect on public health, and therefore, the government of Indonesia has been committed to striving for gender equality and improving the living standards of the women in the country. Although some countries refused to discuss gender equality and women empowerment, Indonesia has implemented a number of regulations to address the issue of violence against women, gender-based violence, and gender equality. In 2016, the Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection (KemenPPA) launched a “Three Ends” program aimed at stopping violence against women and children, stopping human trafficking, and stopping economic disparities against women. Hence, the gender equality strategy and women empowerment will continue to be maximized through various programs in Indonesia. Even the World Health Organization (WHO) support the women empowerment as an important effort to improve public health that affects human development of each country. The WHO of Southeast Asia emphasized that inequality has eliminated human rights, impeded social economic stability, and destroyed the hopes and ideals of millions of women of all ages. Inequality also affects the health and well being of women. Early pregnancy that still occur in various countries in Southeast Asia, for example, directly threaten the health of young women and children, especially in rural areas. In the 11 WHO member states of Southeast Asia, about six million girls between the ages of 15 and 19 bear child annually. It is also recorded that in four countries in Southeast Asia, the birth rate of 50 per 1000 population occurs in young women aged 15 to 20 years. According to the WHO, girls face a health hazard that can actually be avoided by social empowerment and the application of laws that prohibit early marriage. WHO stated that gender inequality also impedes access to basic health services, and the obstacles cause undesirable consequences such as the birth process that many do at home without the help of skilled health workers. Some of the causes of this phenomenon are poor women`s access to knowledge accompanied by helplessness in making a decisions, and the lack of service availability. WHO opined that in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Southeast Asia has gained a lot of progress in suppressing maternal and child mortality. However, there are still many efforts that need to be done to bring maternal mortality to below 70 per 100 thousand births, as set out in the Purpose of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Therefore, WHO will continue advocacy to improve access to contraception and reproductive health services. Besides, it will also continue to actively campaign against gender-based violence and the practice of female genital mutilation that jeopardizes girls and women. In the International Women`s Day on March 8, WHO Southeast Asia called for gender discrimination to be non-existent, and gender equality will be quickly achieved through the shared and sincere efforts of all members of the community. WHO urges women to believe that women`s empowerment is not just a tool to increase income or social strata, but is a core force for the creation of public health that needs to be sustained. In the meantime, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his message of the International Women`s Day warned that inequality and discrimination against women harm everyone. Emphasizing that women`s empowerment was at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Guterres
viewed gender equality as a human rights issue, according to Xinhua. The UN chief noted that achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls was “the unfinished task” and “the greatest human rights challenge in our world” which required addressing the historic power imbalances that underpin discrimination and exploitation. More than a billion women around the world lack legal protection against domestic sexual violence. The global gender pay gap is 23 percent, rising to 40 percent in rural areas, and the unpaid work done by many women goes unrecognized, said the Secretary-General. “We now know that sexual harassment and abuse have been thriving in workplaces, public spaces and private homes, in countries that pride themselves on their record of gender equality,” said the UN chief. He added that women`s representation in national parliaments stands, on average, at less than one quarter, and in boardrooms it is even lower. Without concerted action, millions more girls will be subjected to genital mutilation over the next decade. Related to protection of children from all forms of violence, Women Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Yohanna Yembise has affirmed Indonesia`s commitment to become one of the countries that will strive
to create a child-friendly world. The Minister made the statement in the Fifth Islamic Conference of Ministers in Charge of Childhood with the theme “Realizing Child Friendly World”, held in Rabat, Morocco, last February 25. Through a press release, Minister Yembise stated that Indonesia will continue to protect children from all forms of violence, including by implementing the Convention on the Rights of the Child through the Child Friendly District and City Program (CFC). Furthermore, children could also be protected by developing the National Strategy for the Elimination of Violence Against Children and taking preventive steps through the National Children`s Forum in 34 provinces in Indonesia and over 88 percent of the total districts across Indonesia. She also revealed that Indonesia`s efforts in combating child abuse, which was done through the provision of services for victims of violence by establishing an Integrated Service Center for the Protection of Women and Children (P2TP2A) in all provinces and 238 districts and cities in country. In addition, the Ministry is also committed to eliminating child labor in community institutions, employers` organizations, trade unions and the private sector, both at national and local levels. MANCHESTER - Manchester United suffered a shock exit in the Champions League last 16 with a 2-1 loss to Sevilla after substitute Wissam Ben Yedder struck twice at Old Trafford on Tuesday. The Spaniards, who had never won a Champions League match in England, moved into the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite club competition for the first time since 1958 having drawn the first leg 0-0. Jose Mourinho’s side were stunned by the two late strikes from Frenchman Ben Yedder and although Romelu Lukaku pulled a goal back, United’s once promising European campaign came to a sorry end. MANCHESTER - Manchester United suffered a shock exit in the Champions League last 16 with a 2-1 loss to Sevilla after substitute Wissam Ben Yedder struck twice at Old Trafford on Tuesday. The Spaniards, who had never won a Champions League match in England, moved into the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite club competition for the first time since 1958 having drawn the first leg 0-0. Jose Mourinho’s side were stunned by the two late strikes from Frenchman Ben Yedder and although Romelu Lukaku pulled a goal back, United’s once promising European campaign came to a sorry end. Ben Yedder put the visitors in front with a low finish just 87 seconds after coming off the bench in the 72nd minute and scored again with a header that hit the underside of the bar and went in four minutes later. “In spite of the fact we didn’t create chances in the first half, we were good, very good, up until the final third, and we gave United very little chance near our goal,” said Sevilla’s Italian manager Vincenzo Montella. “Ben made the difference though, he was decisive, two times.” Mourinho added: “I don’t think the performance was bad. I did my best, the players did their best. However while United laboured, Sevilla had not looked a real threat in what was a generally poor quality game until the introduction of Ben Yedder with 18 minutes left. After a swift passing move, the forward sprung the defence with a sharp turn and fired a low shot past David De Gea before doubling Sevilla’s lead with a back post header that crossed the line off the underside of the bar despite the keeper’s efforts. Lukaku volleyed home from close range after Juan Mata had flicked on a corner in the 84th minute but there was to be no comeback for United and the visitors could have added more. Ben Yedder, who now has eight goals from seven games in the Champions League this season, should have claimed a hat-trick when he was sent through one-on-one against De Gea but appeared to freeze and shot tamely straight at the keeper. That was quickly forgotten though as Sevilla’s players and fans wildly celebrated a famous win. “We were just excellent, very good,” said Italian manager Vincenzo Montella. “A lot of those players played the game of their lives”. ROME - A determined AS Roma beat Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 on Tuesday to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2008 as a magnificent finish by Bosnia striker Edin Dzeko sent them through on away goals. Roma celebrated only their second win in six meetings with the Ukrainian side and got revenge for a 6-2 aggregate defeat by Shakhtar at the same stage of the competition in 2011. They endured a nervy finish, however, as Shakhtar ended the match on the front foot despite playing the final few minutes with 10 men after Ivan Ordets was sent off. Hawking’s popular recognition became such that he appeared as himself on the television show “Star Trek: Next Generation” and his cartoon caricature appeared on “The Simpsons”. A 2014 film, The Theory of Everything, with Eddie Redmayne playing Hawking, charted the onset of his illness and his early life as the brilliant student grappling with black holes and the concept of time. Since 1974 he worked extensively on marrying the two cornerstones of modern physics - Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity, which concerns gravity and large-scale phenomena, and quantum theory, which covers subatomic particles. As a result of that research, Hawking proposed a model of the universe based on two concepts of time: ““real time”, or time as human beings experience it, and “quantum theory’s “imaginary time”, on which the world may really run. “Imaginary time may sound like science fiction ... but it is a genuine scientific concept,” he wrote in a lecture paper. Real time could be perceived as a horizontal line, he said. “On the left, one has the past, and on the right, the future. But there’s another kind of time in the vertical direction. This is called imaginary
time, because it is not the kind of time we normally experience - but in a sense, it is just as real as what we call real time.” In July 2002, Hawking said in a lecture that although his quest was to explain everything, a theory of determinism that would predict the universe in the past and forever in the future probably could not be achieved. He caused some controversy among biologists when he said he saw computer viruses as a life form, and thus the human race’s first act of creation. ““I think it says something about human nature that the only form of life we have created so far is purely destructive,” he told a computer forum in Boston. ““We’ve created life in our own image.” He also predicted the development of a “race of self-designing human beings, who will use genetic engineering to improve their make-up. Another major area of his research was into black holes, the regions of space-time where gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape. When asked whether God had a place in his work, Hawking once said: ““In a way, if we understand the universe, we are in the position of God.” PERSONAL LIFE
His health, and accidents involving his wheelchair, including one where he broke his hip after crashing into a wall in December 2001 - “the wall won,” he observed - led to his appearing in the news for reasons other than his work. In 2004 he was
admitted to hospital in Cambridge suffering from pneumonia and was later transferred to a specialist heart and lung hospital. He was twice married and divorced. He married undergraduate Jane Wilde in July 1965 and the couple had three children, Robert, Lucy and Timothy. But Hawking tells in his 2013 memoir how Wilde became more and more depressed as her husband’s condition worsened. “She was worried I was going to die soon and wanted someone who would give her and the children support and marry her when I was gone,” he wrote. Wilde took up with a local musician and gave him a room in the family apartment, Hawking said. “I would have objected but I too was expecting an early death ...,” he said. He went on: “I became more and more unhappy about the increasingly close relationship between (them). In the end I could stand the situation no longer and in 1990 I moved out to a flat with one of my nurses, Elaine Mason.” He divorced Wilde in 1990 and in 1995 married Mason, whose ex-husband David had designed the electronic voice synthesiser that allowed him to communicate. “My marriage to Elaine was passionate and tempestuous,” he wrote in the memoir. “We had our ups and downs but Elaine’s being a nurse saved my life on several occasions.” It also took its emotional toll on her, he noted, and the pair divorced in 2007. The United States, European Union and NATO supported Britain after May said it was “highly likely” that Russia was behind the poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter with Novichok, a nerve agent developed by the Soviet military. U.S. President Donald Trump told May by telephone that Russia “must provide unambiguous answers regarding how this chemical weapon, developed in Russia, came to be used in the United Kingdom,” the White House said. Skripal, 66, and his daughter Yulia, 33, were found slumped unconscious on a bench outside a shopping centre in the genteel southern English city of Salisbury on March 4. They have been in a critical condition in hospital ever since. Scientists at Britain’s military research laboratory at Porton Down identified the poison as a military-grade nerve agent from a group of chemicals known as Novichok, which was first developed in the Soviet Union in the 1970s and 1980s. May said that either the Russian state had poisoned Skripal, a former officer with Russia’s GRU military intelligence, or that Russia had somehow lost control of its chemical weapons. Putin said last year that it had destroyed its last stockpiles of such weapons. A Russian chemist who helped develop the nerve agent said only the Russian government could have carried out the attack with such a deadly and advanced toxin. Discrimination against women affects public health
JAKARTA - Dscrimination against women in various fields has an effect on public health, and therefore, the government of Indonesia has been committed to striving for gender equality and improving the living standards of the women in the country. Although some countries refused to discuss gender equality and women empowerment, Indonesia has implemented a number of regulations to address the issue of violence against women, gender-based violence, and gender equality. In 2016, the Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection (KemenPPA) launched a “Three Ends” program aimed at stopping violence against women and children, stopping human trafficking, and stopping economic disparities against women. Hence, the gender equality strategy and women empowerment will continue to be maximized through various programs in Indonesia. Even the World Health Organization (WHO) support the women empowerment as an important effort to improve public health that affects human development of each country. The WHO of Southeast Asia emphasized that inequality has eliminated human rights, impeded social economic stability, and destroyed the hopes and ideals of millions of women of all ages. Inequality also affects the health and well being of women. Early pregnancy that still occur in various countries in Southeast Asia, for example, directly threaten the health of young women and children, especially in rural areas. In the 11 WHO member states of Southeast Asia, about six million girls between the ages of 15 and 19 bear child annually. It is also recorded that in four countries in Southeast Asia, the birth rate of 50 per 1000 population occurs in young women aged 15 to 20 years. According to the WHO, girls face a health hazard that can actually be avoided by social empowerment and the application of laws that prohibit early marriage. WHO stated that gender inequality also impedes access to basic health services, and the obstacles cause undesirable consequences such as the birth process that many do at home without the help of skilled health workers. Some of the causes of this phenomenon are poor women`s access to knowledge accompanied by helplessness in making a decisions, and the lack of service availability. WHO opined that in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Southeast Asia has gained a lot of progress in suppressing maternal and child mortality. However, there are still many efforts that need to be done to bring maternal mortality to below 70 per 100 thousand births, as set out in the Purpose of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Therefore, WHO will continue advocacy to improve access to contraception and reproductive health services. Besides, it will also continue to actively campaign against gender-based violence and the practice of female genital mutilation that jeopardizes girls and women. In the International Women`s Day on March 8, WHO Southeast Asia called for gender discrimination to be non-existent, and gender equality will be quickly achieved through the shared and sincere efforts of all members of the community. WHO urges women to believe that women`s empowerment is not just a tool to increase income or social strata, but is a core force for the creation of public health that needs to be sustained. In the meantime, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his message of the International Women`s Day warned that inequality and discrimination against women harm everyone. Emphasizing that women`s empowerment was at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Guterres
viewed gender equality as a human rights issue, according to Xinhua. The UN chief noted that achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls was “the unfinished task” and “the greatest human rights challenge in our world” which required addressing the historic power imbalances that underpin discrimination and exploitation. More than a billion women around the world lack legal protection against domestic sexual violence. The global gender pay gap is 23 percent, rising to 40 percent in rural areas, and the unpaid work done by many women goes unrecognized, said the Secretary-General. “We now know that sexual harassment and abuse have been thriving in workplaces, public spaces and private homes, in countries that pride themselves on their record of gender equality,” said the UN chief. He added that women`s representation in national parliaments stands, on average, at less than one quarter, and in boardrooms it is even lower. Without concerted action, millions more girls will be subjected to genital mutilation over the next decade. Related to protection of children from all forms of violence, Women Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Yohanna Yembise has affirmed Indonesia`s commitment to become one of the countries that will strive
to create a child-friendly world. The Minister made the statement in the Fifth Islamic Conference of Ministers in Charge of Childhood with the theme “Realizing Child Friendly World”, held in Rabat, Morocco, last February 25. Through a press release, Minister Yembise stated that Indonesia will continue to protect children from all forms of violence, including by implementing the Convention on the Rights of the Child through the Child Friendly District and City Program (CFC). Furthermore, children could also be protected by developing the National Strategy for the Elimination of Violence Against Children and taking preventive steps through the National Children`s Forum in 34 provinces in Indonesia and over 88 percent of the total districts across Indonesia. She also revealed that Indonesia`s efforts in combating child abuse, which was done through the provision of services for victims of violence by establishing an Integrated Service Center for the Protection of Women and Children (P2TP2A) in all provinces and 238 districts and cities in country. In addition, the Ministry is also committed to eliminating child labor in community institutions, employers` organizations, trade unions and the private sector, both at national and local levels. BEIJING - China’s financial watchdogs are pushing for harsher rules and stepping up action against miscreants, spurred on by official pressure on them to curb risk in the financial system, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the situation. Officials at the central bank, as well as at the banking, insurance and securities regulators, have been stepping up their enforcement activities, which have been under increased scrutiny since late last year, the sources told Reuters.
Regulatory officials worry they may get into trouble for not acting fast enough or being tough enough on financial institutions, the sources said. But senior industry sources say some of the new regulations, such as the central bank’s new rules restricting asset management, are unnecessarily harsh and can may hurt the development of the financial system and the economy. President Xi Jinping has made it clear that the Communist Party must strengthen its leadership of the financial industry, which he says is key to national security. The party is preparing a major overhaul of the country’s financial regulatory structure as it makes prevention of financial risk a top priority for the next three years. On Tuesday, China said it would merge the banking and insurance regulators and transfer some of their current roles to the central bank. Much of the political pressure is coming from officials from the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) who were installed at the regulators late last year, according to the sources with knowledge of the situation. Originally tasked with rooting out officials engaged in corrupt practices, the inspectors are now expanding the scope of their activities, the sources said. The inspectors are now also participating in internal discussions on drafting rules and implementing policy, they said. Financial regulatory officials are being told to submit work materials unrelated to corruption to graft busters for review, sources with three different regulators said. Some officials have been criticized for lacking “teeth”, one of the sources said. “They’re looking at almost everything, from regulation to the dining hall,” the source said. “It’s not just corruption-related. It’s everything. Where is the boundary?” The CCDI, central bank, and the banking, insurance and securities regulators didn’t immediately respond to requests seeking comment. Xu Jia’ai, who in September was named head of the central bank’s disciplinary inspection unit, wrote in a report in February that collusion between “cats and rats” - referring to regulators and the financial institu-

The sources also said that many of the appointees had little experience in the financial sector. “These people have no exposure or existing relations with the financial industry,” said Chen Long, China economist at Gavekal Dragonomics, speaking generally on the appointments. “That means they are more free to implement the anti-corruption mandates.” In the past senior officials were typically drawn from relevant sectors or government bodies. Xu established his credentials as a Zhejiang official, most recently serving as the head of the province’s Politics and Law Committee. At the China Securities Regulatory Commission, which said in November that it was stepping up supervision of officials responsible for initial public offering (IPO) approvals, the approval rate of IPO applications had markedly declined, two people working closely with the regulator said, citing applications of similar quality. “They are trying not to approve IPO applications in order to avoid responsibility,” said one of the people, referring to the officials at the regulator. “But China will lose many good companies to Hong Kong and New York capital markets if they continue to work this way.” REGULATION, NOT DEVELOPMENT The anti-corruption drive has been particularly intense at the China Insurance Regulatory Commission, whose former chairman, Xiang Junbo, last April became the highest-ranking finance industry official to be investigated for corruption. The verification process will take place next June. Other than Terteran of Jasri village and Gebug Ende of Seraya village, said Suradnyani, the Bali Culture Office also recommended the Usaba Aci Sumbu of Timbrah village that involves thousands of roasted suckling pigs being presented as holy offerings. However, the recommendation failed to qualify at the national level because the administrative requirements were not complete. The Karangasem Culture an Tourism Agence will be improving the shortcomings of the application through the Bali Cultural Preservation Agency. This unique culture of Timbrah customary village will be proposed again to the central government through the recommendation of the Bali government along with the Geret Pandan tradition of Tenganan Pegeringsingan and Usaba Dangsil of Bungaya village. The latter two traditions are still being studied and documented in preparation for the proposal. Determination of the cultural property of Karangasem is necessary to avoid any claims to them that may be commited by other regions or countries.. Lately, cultural claim cases used to support tourism promotion of particular regions or countries are increasingly common. In addition, such recognistion is also importtant in order to ensure cultural preservation, so that hese traditions do not disspaear over the next ten years. (kmb)
Barong Enlivens Bukit Sari Sangeh Attraction
Bukit Sari Sangeh tourist attraction became the venue of cultural event entitled Sangeh Barong Festival. At least, there were 31 participants in the contest organized by Sari Guna customary village youth club, Sari hamlet, Sangeh, Badung. More interestingly, the participants were mostly young people of primary and junior high schools from different regions in Bali such as Bangli, Ubud (Gianyar), Sanur as well as of Petang, Mengwi, Bongkasa, Cemagi and Jimbaran (Badung). The Sangeh Barong Festival took place at the outermost courtyard of Pucak Sari Temple (in the woods) for two days (Dec. 17-18, 2016) starting at 19:00. On the first day it featured 15 participants and on the second day featured 16 participants. However, before the contest began, the organizer featured a guest star namely the single kid barong dance and single kid drum as a form of appreciation to young artist. Thus, it encouraged the vivacity of preserving the Balinese culture. Each barong dancer came with a
drum player as a partner. Nevertheless, each barong dancer and drum player is assessed by the jury panel. Each participant should present mask composition, Goak Macok, Playon Bongkasa, Omang and drum improvisation. They were given 15-20 minutes to make their performance. Atmosphere of the contest on the second day looked more festive because the Regent of Badung, Giri Prasta, came to watch and give encouragement. He also invited other young men to exemplify the implementation of the Sangeh Barong Festival. Regent highly supported the positive and innovative works of the Badung younger generation in the field of art or sport. On that account, the Regent Giri Prasta gave appreciation fund worth IDR 30 million and bonuses to each winner. At the festival, I Putu Dedik Sutyana (Ubud) was finally elected as the first winner of the barong dancer and followed by I Putu Eka Darmayasa (Cemagi) and Ida Bagus Alit (Sanur) respectively as the second and third winner. Having no guide identity card, three tour guides ensnared in Ubud raid
GIANYAR - A number of tour guides were ensnared in Ubud area on Tuesday (Mar. 13). The raid organized by joint officers of the Bali Municipal Police with Directorate of Public Community Development of Bali Police and the Bali Transportation Agency managed to ensnared three tour guides having no tour guides identity card (KTPP). Section Head of the Bali Municipal Police Research and Investigation, I Ketut Pongres, said the joint officers opened two post points, namely at parking area of Dalem Puri temple and in the area of Ubud Palace. “When the tour
guides come with their guests, we immediately summon them and ask to present their KTPP,” he said. During the implementation of the raid, a total of 21 tour guides were netted. Well, among all the tour guides, three people have no
KTPP. They are declared to have violated the provisions of Bali Regional Regulation No. 5/2016 on Tour Guides. The officers immediately issued a minute on the misdemeanor criminal act. “The unlicensed tour guides getting this
ticket are then asked to attend the trial in the Gianyar District Court,” he said. Through the raid, the joint officers also checked the tourist transport used to haul tourists to Ubud. Based on the examination, a vehicle was found to have no transport license. The owner of the unlicensed vehicle is also subjected to misdemeanor for violating Bali Regional Regulation No. 4/2016 on
the Implementation of Traffic and Road Transport. Ketut Pongres said the law enforcement against the tourist guide and transportation service is not just held once. Together with his ranks, some time ago it also had held a similar raid in the parking area of Batuan Temple. “As planned, we will return to organize the raid in several places in Gianyar region in the future,” he said. saw the victim swimming from the area in front of the Hotel Canggu Intercontinental at 14:30. A few minutes later, he did not see the victim and was alleged to have been dragged by sea currents and disappeared. A few moments later, the victim was found floating at
the scene in a face-down position and lifeless.”When found, the victim was not wearing any clothes, but only gray shorts,” said police chief. Furthermore, Pitnawa assisted by Adigian, 24, evacuated the body of the victim to the beach using a

Japan PM Abe denies involvement by him, wife in discount land sale
SEOUL - Former South Korean president Lee Myung-bak appeared for questioning on Wednesday over allegations he took bribes when he was in office, following months of investigations into his family and acquaintances over the graft charges. Lee made his way before hundreds of reporters waiting outside the prosecutors’ office to ask him questions in the latest top-level political corruption scandal to rock the country. “I stand before you today with a tragic heart. I offer my deepest apology to the people for causing worry amid times when the economy is in hardship and the situation surrounding the Korean peninsula is serious,” Lee said. “I have much to say as a former president, but I keep telling myself I should refrain from saying much,” he added. Lee faces almost 20 charges and the prosecution believe he took around 11 billion won unlawfully from a number of institutions and individuals including the country’s National Intelligence Service and Samsung Group [SAGR.UL]. Prosecutors last month sought a 30-year jail term for former
president Park Geun-hye, Lee’s successor, who was ousted last year amid an influence-peddling scandal and is standing trial on charges of bribery, abuse of power and coercion. Lee has denied any wrongdoing, calling the investigation into the bribery allegations politically motivated by prosecutors under the incumbent liberal administration. The former president was in office from 2008 to 2013 before his successor, Park, won her presidency. Last month, Seoul prosecutors searched the offices of Samsung Electronics as part of the investigation, the prosecutors’ office said. They were looking for possible evidence that Samsung provided financial support in litigation fees for an auto parts maker called DAS, run by Lee’s family and allegedly controlled by him, the prosecutors’ office said. Samsung has offered no official comment on the matter. Lee has said DAS is run by his elder brother, Lee Sang-eun. The heir to parent Samsung Group, Jay Y. TOKYO - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday remained steadfast that he and his wife were not involved in a discount land-sale deal that has seen the opposition call for the resignation of his key ally, Finance Minister Taro Aso. Abe and Aso have come under fresh pressure over the ministry’s admission this week that it had altered documents related to the sale of state-owned land at a steep discount to a school operator with ties to Abe’s wife, Akie. Suspicion of a cover-up could slash Abe’s ratings and dash his hopes for a third term as leader of his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Victory in the LDP September leadership vote would put him on track to become Japan’s longest-serving premier. Copies of documents released by the finance ministry on Monday showed that references to Abe, his wife and Aso were removed from the ministry’s records of the sale to school operator Moritomo Gakuen. “When you look at the documents even before they were altered, it is clear that my wife and I were not involved,” Abe told an upper house budget committee on
Wednesday, a statement echoed by chief cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga. Abe has said he would resign if evidence were found that they had. According to the ministry documents, a comment from Moritomo Gakuen citing Akie Abe as telling him, “This is good land so please proceed,” was removed. Bolivian women weave devices to patch holes in hearts
LA PAZ - A team of Bolivian women are using indigenous Aymara weaving patterns to craft devices that can help repair heart defects, doctors involved in developing the device report in JAMA.
The device is woven from a nickel-titanium alloy that can be collapsed and delivered within a catheter to the heart, where it’s then expanded to repair a hole. Traditional Aymara weavers repeat an Andean cross or chakana symbol up to 120 times to craft the device, called Nit-Occlud ASD-R. “To my knowledge, it is the first time metal weaving is used for medical devices in Bolivia,” said lead study author Dr. Alexandra Heath of Kardiozentrum in La Paz, Bolivia in email to Reuters Health. “It is surprising, that these women, after a training, can assume the task brilliantly,” said Heath, who has received consulting fees from the device manufacturer PFM Medical. Heart defects are more common at high altitudes, possibly because of the effects of low oxygen, Heath and colleagues write. In La Paz, at an altitude of 12,000 feet (4,000 meters), cardiologists often encounter kids with defects that involve holes in the heart. Many commercially available devices can be used to patch these holes, and open heart surgery is also an option. Developers sought to create an alternative device using local craftswomen in part because open heart surgery is an option in Bolivia only for the most extreme cases. Commercial devices to repair holes in the heart are
made from woven mesh discs that expand to fill the defective area. Developers of the hand-woven device thought they might be able to train local weavers to craft something similar. Engineers teamed with weavers to identify the best pattern and materials for the device. Now, a team of about 40 craftswomen who went through four months of training weave devices that meet specific requirements for quality control, sterilization and proper chemical treatment. The Nit-Occlud ASD-R has been approved to repair heart defects in adults and children by regulators in Canada, Europe, and South America. It is not approved in the U.S. This hand-crafted device essentially copies existing devices which are made in developed countries by “weaving” machines, said Dr. John Moore, director of cardiology at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, California. Moore is involved in a study of a device by PFM Medical and has been compensated for work with two other device companies, 480 Biomedical Corporation and Transmural Systems. “In Bolivia, where the art of hand weaving is widespread and very developed and the economy is underdeveloped, it may be cost-effective to produce such devices by hand,” Moore said by email. “This is certainly not the case in developed countries,” Moore added. “Similar machine made devices have been FDA approved for more than 15 years and are used widely in the developed and for that matter in the developing world.” (rtr)
NEW YORK - Older adults who are socially isolated may not necessarily see doctors or visit health clinics more often than their peers who have close ties to many friends and family members, a research review suggests. When their health takes a turn for the worse, however, older people without strong social relationships may be more likely to have long hospital stays and repeat hospitalizations, researchers report in the American Journal of Public Health. “It is evident that strong social relationships (i.e., large social network, close interpersonal connection and adequate social support) are beneficial to health and wellbeing,” said Dr. Guohua Li, a researcher at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in New York. “It is less clear about the mechanisms through which social relationships affect health outcomes such as (medical complications) and mortality,” Li, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. There are, however, many possible explanations, said Ben Lennox Kail, a sociology and gerontology researcher at Georgia State University in Atlanta who wasn’t involved in the study.
For starters, people with few close relationships with friends or relatives may be more likely to suffer from depression or other mental health issues than individuals with expansive social networks, Kail said by email. “People who are not particularly well socially integrated may have poorer mental health or wellbeing, which may lead to poorer physical health, which may make longer hospital stays and more repeat visits more necessary,” Kail said. “That said, if this were the primary explanation, we might expect to see more regular doctor’s visit – and we don’t,” Kail added. Instead, it’s possible that people without friends and family to rely on might benefit more from longer hospital stays where they can get extra support from nurses, Kail said. With strong social networks, people might also have healthier habits, more reasons to leave the house and keep active, and people in their life to remind them to eat right, exercise, and take any prescribed medicine. For the study, Nicole Valtorta of Newcastle University in the U.K. and colleagues examined data from 126 studies involving a total of more than 226,000 people in 19 countries. Fintech regulation targeted to complete in first half of 2018
OJK applies fintech characteristic approach and transparency MANGUPURA - Financial technology (fintech) related policy is targeted to be completed in the first half of 2018 considering the rapid development of fintech. There are currently 36 registered fintech companies and one of them has been licensed. Meanwhile, the companies under the process of registration amount to 42. Vice Chairman of the Financial Services Authority (OJK), Nurhaida, said the development of fintech in Indonesia is quite significant and grows very fast. Therefore, OJK is building a regulation that can govern the fintech ecosystem. The regulation is scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2018. However, she is optimistic that it can be completed in the first quarter. However, if the process still takes time, the authority will issue in the first half of 2018. Before finalizing the regulation, the OJK wants to get input from various countries in arranging the fintech as globally the terms of fintech vary. “There are countries adopting the prudential approach system, while some others are adopting the direction on how to regulate transparency,” she said in the press conference of the International Seminar on Fintech Policies and Regulation at Sofitel Nusa Dua on Monday (Mar. 12). By looking at various regulatory systems in different countries, the OJK decided to govern with the fintech characteristic approach and prioritizes transparency. It hoped that fintech can provide a useful openness for both lenders and borrowers. Particular concern in the fintech supervision is consumer protection. This consumer protection involves two points, namely the interests and data of consumers. “These are our points in regulating the fintech later on,” she said. In the previous OJK regulation namely the POJK 77 governed more on the peer-to-peer lending. Peer-to-peer lending is the company that provides a platform to bring together lenders with borrowers. Both parties are said to have a risk of losses. “Most importantly, the transparency must be clear. So, this fintech companies must believe that consumer transparency in terms of the borrower and the transparency of the lenders should be clear,” she explained. With the transparency, the loss risk is expected to be minimized. “Borrowers and lenders can choose the existing data with the presence of transparency. Information about borrower can be opened in the platform and then the lender determines who will be given the loan, so the risk of loss can be minimized,” she explained. Deputy of Commissioner of the Indonesia Financial Services Authority, Sukarela Batunanggar, explained that fintech arrangement, although the spirit is the same as the existing financial service institutions (LJK) like bank, in its approach it is adjusted to business model and fintech characteristic. The bank’s risk lies in the financial institution and the users’ side. In the meantime, the risk of fintech is between peer to peer because it serves as a platform. So, with the presence of transparency, education and financial literacy, self-governance, market discipline of the industry, it is expected to be able to reduce risks. “We want to build a responsible attitude from the industry side, and the users to create a trust,” she said. Considering the fintech grows very fast, the basic rules need to be arranged. The OJK only governs the policies like the minimum compliance with fintech standards. All the fintech companies must register to OJK because not all fintech companies are included in the category of financial service institutions. Lesser Sunda Museum
Center for history and new destination education in Buleleng
SINGARAJA — After quite a long time becoming a discourse, Buleleng finally started to establish the Lesser Sunda (Sunda Kecil) Museum. With the funding support from the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2017 valued at IDR 1.2 billion, the Lesser Sunda Museum was established with the collection reaching 20 percent. Although the collection is not yet complete, historians consider the museum becomes the source of historical education for pupils, students, researchers and general public. Besides, this museum is worth becoming a tourist attraction in Singaraja town.
Lesser Sunda Museum utilizes the former harbor office building in the Dutch colonial era located in the ex-harbor area of Buleleng at Kampung Tinggi. On Tuesday (Mar. 13), the Buleleng Culture Agency officially launched the museum with the presence of Regional Secretary of Buleleng, Dewa Ketut Puspaka, representing the Regent of Buleleng Putu Agus Suradnyana. Besides, the event was also attended by Director General of Museum Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Ministry of Education and Culture, Harry Widianto, Head of the Buleleng Culture Agency, Putu Tastra Wijaya and other related agencies. Historian who is also an academician of Undiksha Singaraja, I Made Pageh, said that Lesser Sunda Museum plays a central role in the history education in Buleleng. This happens because the museum displays some historical evidences where in the past the civic center of Lesser Sunda had the administrative areas including Bali, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). In addition, in this museum is also kept historical evidences where the Lesser Sunda town itself was once led by a governor general from Buleleng having established to be a National Hero, namely I Gusti Ketut Pudja. “As a historian and getting involved in the initiative of the museum establishment, I am prideful that Buleleng once served as a civic center of Bali and NTT and NTB. It is also becomes the main source of history for students, researchers, tourists and the general public,” he said. According to Pageh, in terms of collection, the Lesser Sunda Museum actually does not require a lot of collections like other museums in general. history and administrative territory of Bali, NTT, and NTB displayed in the museum. Other than in the form of book or other historical documents, it also needs to be completed with audio visual. With such a modest collection, he is confident it has been enough to give a historical picture about the administration of Governor General of Lesser Sunda held by I Gusti Ketut Puja. Based on the information, the main target is how visitors or other interested parties can know more about the history. They can come directly to see the area of origin what happened in NTT or NTB including in Bali itself. “If analogized to a book, this museum only carries the table of contents. Then, when wishing to know about contents, they can visit first the regions belonging to Lesser Sunda administrative area. On that account, this museum does not need to have a lot of collections, but it is enough to have the master information about the NTB and NTT,” he explained. On the other hand, Pageh assessed that Lesser Sunda Museum will be included in the historical tour package of Singaraja town. He considered it very feasible to be carried out by the local government. This considers that location of the museum is in the area of former Harbor of Buleleng. The museum area is also worth supporting the historical attractions in North Bali. “It is very appropriate to be made into tourist attraction in Singaraja town. Moreover, this area was a trading center in the North Coast of Bali which will certainly be interesting to be learned and known by tourists or researchers,” he explained. Meanwhile, Director General of Museum Affairs of Cultural Heritage, Ministry of Education and Culture, Harry Widianto, said the central government will fully support the development of Lesser Sunda Museum so it deserves to be a museum object. This support is in line with the wishes of the district government to complete the collection in the form of painting of I Gusti Ketut Puja, tables, chairs, bookshelves and statues that have got permission from the family to be kept in the museum. “We have to give the support, not only because of its history, but the building itself deserves to be made into a cultural heritage as it retains historical aspects and has aged more than 50 years. Peguyangan village starts melasti on Padanggalak Beach
DENPASAR - Series of the tawur kesanga and Nyepi Day of Caka New Year 1940 was commenced with melasti (purificatory) procession. This melasti activity is carried out by each customary village as a symbol of sanctifying the universe as well as human self located to the sea as well as other water sources as seen on Padanggalak Beach, Kesiman, on Tuesday (Mar. 13).
Peguyangan customary village started the process of pemelastian on Padanggalak Beach. Thousands of customary villagers came by using dozens of vehicles thronged the black sandy beach. “Since two years ago, we have agreed to perform melasti earlier considering if done three days before Nyepi, it will be too crowded. Other customary villages also preferred that day,” said one of the customary security guards (pecalang) of Peguyangan, Wayan Sumarta, last Tuesday. According to him, preparation of the melasti has been done since Monday (Mar. 12). Last Tuesday, they started from their village to the beach from six o’clock in the morning. In addition to pratima (sanctified effigies) of Puseh/Desa and Bale Agung temple of the local village, some temples across Peguyangan village also joined the melasti (purificatory) procession to Padanggalak. After performing the purification ritual and ending with saying prayers together, the people returned to uphold the sanctified effigies and other sacred paraphernalia. Around 09:30, the pemelastian process of
the customary village already completed. Meanwhile, as seen on Sunrise Beach and Bali Beach, Sanur, on Tuesday afternoon there were no entourages performing melasti procession. “Maybe tomorrow (Wednesday—Ed) many people will do melasti here. But so far, there is no,” said one of the ticket attendants on Sunrise Beach. In addition to Padanggalak Beach, Sunrise Beach and Bali Beach, Sanur, and several other beaches become the melasti destination of customary villages in Denpasar. Besides, several beach points in Denpasar are also taken advantage as venue of melasti, including the Segara Beach, Mertasari Beach, Pamelisan Beach, Suwung Kangin, Benoa Beach (near Akame) as well as the east of Candi Narmada temple. From a number of destinations of melasti, Padanggalak Beach the most widely used. This beach is usually used by some customary villages such as the Peguyangan Kaja, Peguyangan Kangin, Peguyangan, Dauh Puri Kaja, Poh Gading, Ubung Kaja, Ubung, Tonja, Sumerta Kaja, Kesiman Petilan, Penatih Dangin Puri, Penatih, Sumerta Kauh, Kesiman Kertalangu, Sumerta and Kesiman. Meanwhile, the customary village of Dangin Puri Kelod chose Sindu Beach to perform its melasti. Sunrise Beach is used as the melasti destination by Sumerta Kelod and Sanur Kaja. Magmatic chamber system of Mount Agung unstable yet
AMLAPURA - The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) acknowledged that volcanic activities of Mount Agung had slightly increased as marked with a sequence of earthquakes since the past two weeks. The increase in volcanic activities occurred because the magmatic chamber system of the volcano with the height of 3.142 meters above sea level has not been stable Head of the PVMBG Mitigation Division, I Gede Suantika, said on Tuesday (Mar. 13) that the recent tectonic earthquakes occurred locally were triggered by tectonic activities of Bali-NTB-NTT. The triggering factor is getting stronger following the earthquake with the magnitude of more than 5.0 in Richter Scales centered in Lombok and NTB some time ago. Mount Agung instantly reacted to the sequence of the earthquakes because the magmatic chamber system is not yet stable. Once getting tectonic pressure, the magmatic chamber immediately responded. “The increased activity occurred in the crater of the mountain,” he said. Despite the slight increase in activities, the impact of the current crater activities of Mount Agung is in the form of thin and white solfatara. Dominant
blast of the solfatara is weak. Even if there is ash eruption, the intensity is small as it happened last Sunday night. The ash column created from the blast only reached a height of 800 meters. Based on these facts, Suantika asserted that currently the danger zone remains in the radius of 4 km from the peak of the mountain, beyond the radius is declared to be safe. Meanwhile, volcanic activities in the form of blast still continue. Based on information of the Magma VAR within the past 12 hours until 16:00, at least there are six times of blast with maximum amplitude of 8 mm and maximum duration of 65 seconds. Monitoring devices at Rendang Observation Post also noted the existence of shallow volcanic, deep volcanic and far tectonic earthquakes. In addition to the recommendation on the danger radius of 4 km, the PVMBG continued to give emphasis to the people living around the river flow having the upstream on Mount Agung. Communities were asked to always be aware of the threat of secondary danger of rain lava flows that can occur in the rain as happened in the past few days. DENPASAR - Mobile data (internet) has been confirmed to be disconnected on Nyepi Day celebration. However, Sanglah Hospital Denpasar whose operation is inseparable from the use of Internet to support its information technology ascertained if the services will not be disturbed by the policy. Division Head of Information Technology of Sanglah Hospital, Yohannes Yanson Purnawan, explained the system at Sanglah Hospital is not directly related to the internet, but using a local intranet. “Our system applies local system, so our system at the hospital is not directly connected to the internet. Local users can still use the system fully. We use local intranet only,” he said on Tuesday (Mar. 13). Sanglah Hospital has built information technology system independently since 2016. Previously, it teamed up with partners. According to him, there is no health service activity in Sanglah Hospital that will be disrupted by the disconnection of cellular data or internet except the BPJS Kesehatan. It services still require internet access such as in the printing of BPJS Kesehatan guarantee
letter. “This process must indeed use the internet connection,” he said. Online registration made by Sanglah Hospital to facilitate patients to get outpatient services, said Yanson, will automatically get disconnected or blocked during Saturday, Sunday, and holidays. So, especially ahead of Nyepi Day, people can only make online registration until Thursday (Mar. 15). “When making online registration, the system is automatically blocked on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Business hours return to open on Monday to Friday. Because in relation to Nyepi, this Friday is holiday, so people can only make online registration until Thursday. People then can return to get the services after Nyepi,” he said. Until Tuesday afternoon, the number of patient visits to Sanglah Hospital almost doubled. From an average of 900-1,000 visits per day, it suddenly increased to 1,800 visits. He could not confirm the cause. Next ‘Fantastic Beasts’ movie thrills fans with return to Hogwarts LOS ANGELES - The second of the “Fantastic Beasts” movie spinoffs from author J.K. Rowling includes scenes set in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, directly connecting the story to the best-selling “Harry Potter” books and films, a first movie trailer on Tuesday showed. The trailer for Warner Bros’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” to be released in November, also gave fans a first glimpse of actor Jude Law as a dapper, bearded, young version of Hogwarts’ venerable headmaster Albus Dumbledore, and featured parts of the famous “Harry Potter” music score. The “Harry Potter” spinoff, which will eventually include five movies, is set some 70 years before Harry Potter went to the British boarding school and learned to become a wizard. He accused Cyrus and her label RCA Records, owned by Sony Corp, of misappropriating his material, including the phrase “We run things. Things no run we,” which she sings as “We run things. Things don’t run we.” Representatives for Cyrus, 25, did not immediately respond to requests
for comment. A spokeswoman for Sony did not immediately respond to a similar request. May said he sought to protect his work last year with the U.S. Copyright Office, and in November won “formal copyright protection” for all musical arrangements in “We Run Things.” He said Cyrus’ song “owes the basis of its chart-topping popularity to and its highly-lucrative success to plaintiff May’s protected, unique, creative and original content.” The Kingston, Jamaica resident is also seeking a halt to further sales and

Physicist Stephen Hawking, who unlocked the secrets of space and time, dies at 76
LONDON - Stephen Hawking, who sought to explain some of the most complicated questions of life while working under the shadow of a likely premature death, has died at 76. He died peacefully at his home in the British university city of Cambridge in the early hours of Wednesday. “We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today,” his children Lucy, Robert and Tim said in a statement. Hawking’s formidable mind probed the very limits of human understanding both in the vastness of space and in the bizarre sub-molecular world of quantum theory, which he said could predict what happens at the beginning and end of time. His work ranged from the origins of the universe, through the
tantalising prospect of time travel to the mysteries of space’s allconsuming black holes. “He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years,” his family said. “His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world.” The power of his intellect contrasted cruelly with the weakness of his body, ravaged by the wasting
motor neurone disease he developed at the age of 21. Hawking was confined for most of his life to a wheelchair. As his condition worsened, he had to resort to speaking through a voice synthesiser and communicating by moving his eyebrows. The disease spurred him to work harder but also contributed to the collapse of his two marriages, he wrote in a 2013 memoir “My Brief History.” In the book he related how he was first diagnosed: “I felt it was very unfair - why should this happen to me,” he wrote. “At the time, I thought my life was over and that I would never realize the potential I felt I had. But now, 50 years later, I can be quietly satisfied
with my life.” Hawking shot to international fame after the 1988 publication of ““A Brief History of Time”, one of the most complex books ever to achieve mass appeal, which stayed on the Sunday Times best-sellers list for no fewer than 237 weeks. He said he wrote the book to convey his own excitement over recent discoveries about the universe. ““My original aim was to write a book that would sell on airport bookstalls,” he told reporters at the time. ““In order to make sure it was understandable I tried the book out on my nurses. I think they understood most of it.” He was particularly proud
