Alabama Shakes ready to rock at Grammy Awards
LOS ANGELES — Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes remembers being a nervous, fresh-faced, first-time nominee at the Grammys back in 2013. “It was all (like), ‘Well, what’s going to happen. What? Ahhh, it was really stressful. What is this? What do I do? Go here, go there; Staples Center. What?’ “ Howard recalled in an interview Friday. She, and her band, are back at the Grammys three years later, competing for four honors, including album of the year for their sophomore effort, “Sound & Color.” And they mean business. “Now, it’s like, I’m used to this and this is going to be cool. I’m going to be less stressed out. In the commercial breaks, I’ll get to talk to more people. I’m not afraid to say hello and things like that,” she said. “I’m going to use this as a
huge opportunity to try to meet all my heroes.” The show, airing live on Monday in Los Angeles, will include performances from Adele, Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift, Rihanna and more. Lady Gaga will pay tribute to David Bowie, while members of the Eagles, along with Jackson Browne, will remember the band’s founding member, Glenn Frey. Alabama Shakes will also perform at the Staples Center, and the band was busy Friday rehearsing “Don’t Wanna Fight,” which is nominated for best rock song and rock performance. “Sound & Color,” which debuted at No. 1 last year, is also up for best alternative
music album. “I’m proud of the guys,” Howard said of her bandmates. “We all worked really hard on this and put all of our love and creativity into it and it’s nice to get recognized. To be nominated is actually a huge honor; I know it sounds cliché, but it is when you think about who’s voting for you.” Her competition in the rock category includes more women than men — a rarity for the genre at the Grammys. Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine, singer Elle King and the band Wolf Alice — led by Ellie Rowsell — also earned nominations. “All the women are out here working just as hard as the guys and proving this is our world, too. Jusuf Kalla has said that the social gap among communities in Indonesia has reached such an alarming level that the government must pay attention to it. “In general, the nation is facing a gap which has become a yellow light for all of us. Meaning, it should be corrected,” the Vice President said when opening the Indonesian Property Expo at the Jakarta Convention Center, Saturday. In urban areas, the social gap is
widening, while in rural areas it is narrowing, he added. One of the indicators of the social gap in cities is property ownership. “In rural areas, it (the gap) is not too visible, as everyone has almost similar houses. But in cities like Jakarta, poverty is in fact visible,”
he said. The property disparity is seen in certain areas of Jakarta where luxurious houses are located, while in river banks, there are people living in crowded slum areas, he added. The state-owned bank BTN, the National Housing Company (Perumnas), and private property developers could provide adequate houses for the community, he
hoped. “There will be a government regulation regarding this for a wise and proper implementation. The government wants to see a balanced and even growth,” he said. foreign investment, the profits will flow out of the country as well. But if they are all domestic investments, the profits will go round the country and it is much more profitable. But when the domestic investment cannot meet investment needs, we are looking for foreign investment. However, the treatment to them should not discriminate,” he said. Parwata added that his office has encouraged the increasing number of investments in Bali especially in the areas experiencing economic slowdown such as North Bali, West Bali and East Bali. Various facilities for investors have also been set forth in the regional bylaw draft on the Provision of Incentives and Investment Facility for Investor and the Public currently being verified in the Minister of Home Affairs. “It has been set forth so that it can motivate or stimulate foreign and domestic investment to invest in Bali. Balinese Temple Ceremony
Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

The market potential of LCGC in Bali, said Indra, make PT. Nissan Motor Indonesia (NIM) as producer of Datsun, decided to focus more in Bali. “We see the market potential in Bali still high,” he said. Datsun in 2014 had issued two variants of LCGCs, Datsun GO (two-row passengers) and Datsun GO+ (three-row passengers). He said the response on these two variants in Bali has been quite positive. Since its launch, sales of these two products reach about 100 units per month, dominated by Datsun GO+. “In terms of market size, LGCG reach about 500-600 units per month and Datsun market share around 12 percent,” he said. For 2016, he is optimistic Datsun to sell about 160 units per month. He argued there are several areas, like Singaraja,

SEMARAPURA - The waters of Nusa Penida, Klungkung, have claimed another victim. This time, a tourist from China named Zhu Guangyao, 58, died as he was swept away while swimming swimming at Dream Beach, in Lembongan village on Friday afternoon (Feb. 12). After a 30 minute search conducted by police officer in the area where the victim had been swept away, the tourist’s body was found floating in the sea. Chief of the Klungkung Water Police, I Putu Ardana, on Friday, confirmed that the Chinese tourist’s body had been found drowned. He explained that the victim and his wife, son and daughter were holidaying on Nusa Lembongan. They had arrived from Sanur Beach and arrived at Tanjung Sangyang Harbor in Lembongan at around 10:00 a.m. They then hired a small boat and enjoyed sightseeing around the island. When they arrived at Dream Beach, the victim was impressed with the beauty of the coastal panorama of Batu Belek. The victim decided to take a dip in the water while his wife and kids waited onboard. “After swimming for a few minutes the victim was then seized by waves and drowned”, said Putu Ardana. The victim’s wife, Li Yasen, 57, along with her son and daughter immediately cried for help from the people around them. Nearby residents and the Water Police started searching for the victim right away. Due to the bad weather conditions at the time, it took about thirty minutes to finally locate the victim, whose body was found floating dead. The body was taken to the Nusa Penida health center II for a post mortem medical examination, from which it was determined that he had died of a ruptured lung from having taken in too much sea water. “After having been taken to the health center, the victim’s body was then immediately ferried back to Sanur by the surviving family and commended at the Sanglah Hospital morgue” said Putu Ardana. JERUSALEM, Feb 14 (Reuters) - Israel voiced doubt on Sunday that an international ceasefire plan for Syria would work, with one senior official suggesting a sectarian partition of the country might be preferable. While formally neutral on the five-year civil war wracking its neighbour, Israel has some sway among the world powers that have mounted armed interventions and which on Friday agreed on a “cessation of hostilities” to begin within a week. The deal, clinched at a Munich security conference, is already beset by recriminations between Russia, which backs Syrian President Bashar al-Assad militarily and wants to see his rule restored, and Western powers that have called for change in Damascus involving some opposition groups. “The situation in Syria is very complex, and it is hard to see how the war and mass killing there are stopped,” Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon, in Munich to meet European counterparts and Jordan’s King Abdullah, said in statement. “Syria as we have known it will not be united anew in the foreseeable future, and at some point I reckon that we will see enclaves, whether organised or not, formed by the various sectors that live and are fighting there.” Ram Ben-Barak, director general of Israel’s Intelligence Ministry, described partition as “the only possible solution”. “I think that ultimately Syria should be turned into regions, under the control of whoever is there - the Alawites where they are, the Sunnis where they are,” Ben-Barak told Israel’s Army Radio, referring to Assad’s minority sect and the majority Muslim denomination, respectively. “I can’t see how a situation can be reached where those same 12 percent Alawites go back to ruling the Sunnis, of whom they killed half a million people there. Listen, that’s crazy.” Helped by Russian firepower, Syrian government forces and their allies have been encircling rebel-held areas of Aleppo. That would give Assad effective control of western Syria, Ben-Barak said, although much of the east is dominated by Islamic State insurgents. An Assad victory in Aleppo, Ben-Barak said, “will not solve the problem, because the battles will continue. You have ISIS there and the rebels will not lay down their weapons.” While sharing foreign worries about Islamic State advances, Israel worries that the common threat from the insurgents has created a de-facto axis between world powers and its arch-foe Iran, which also has troops helping Assad. “As long as Iran is in Syria, the country will not return to what it was, and it will certainly find it difficult to become stable as a country that is divided into enclaves, because the Sunni forces there will not allow this,” Yaalon said. AMLAPURA - Opposition to the Benoa Bay reclamation plan is becoming increasingly widespread. Seraya customary village, located on Bali’s east coast in Karangasem is the latest of many villages in Bali, to have taken a stand against the reclamation plan. Seraya’s village chief, Nyoman Matal, said on Friday (Feb. 12) that the reclamation at Benoa Bay would make Bali increasingly imbalanced and he is calling to other customary villages in Bali to also take a stand because –as Matal said, reclamation does not only affects coastal areas but is also a threat to nature, tradition and culture.
“It is referred to as revitalization but if it is being done in the interest of tourism it is unacceptable. South Bali is already overcrowded and jammed with traffic. Do not make Bali more and more unbalanced and dangerous” emphasized the former head of Karangasem’s paliament, Seraya Chief Nyoman Matal. According to Matal, if Bali is progressively made lame, it is fair to assume that the government is no longer thinking thoroughly about the welfare of Bali. He pointed out that, other parts of Bali, such as the Northern and Eastern regions have been waiting for a more equal distribution of the tourism pie and the prosperity that comes with it. If inequality and discrimination -in terms of distribution of wealth, continue to occur in Bali, he said, the peace of the Balinese people will be negatively affected. In reference to the notion of revitalization, Matal also spoke of the fact that nearly all of Bali’s coastlines have become damaged and are in need of ‘revitalization’ – not just Benoa Bay. Seraya’s village chief is therfor asking that both he government and investors not impose their will on the island. Bali, he explained, has unique features and aspects that cannot be equated with the kind of progress that reclamation might bring to other places. “Stop all activities related to reclamation in Bali. Public exposes on environmental impact analysis are no longer needed” he said.

Seraya customary village, located on Bali’s east coast in Karangasem is the latest of many villages in Bali, to have taken a stand against the reclamation plan. Since the express rejection of reclamation by the majority of Balinese people –particularly those living on the coasts, has been ignored by the government and by the investors, Matal is asking all customary villages in Bali to take a stance. The government, including the legislative assembly have, apparently been unable to speak on behalf of the public when it comes to excessive investors. In order that the aspirations of the customary villages of Bali be accommodated, Matal is urging the customary village general assembly (MUDP) of Bali (MUDP) to accommodate the aspirations of customary villagers who want to take action to safeguard Bali’s land.
Matal also asks that customary institutions remain calm in addressing the reclamation issue. Getting emotional or worse yet taking anarchic action, he said is not the way of the Balinese people. He did, however, insist that the attitudes expressed by the customary villages need to be taken very seriously, given that this institution represents the spirit of the people of Bali. Matal is urging the MUDP to immediately accommodate the aspirations of customary institutions in Bali who have begun to intensely voice their opposition to the Benoa Bay reclamation plan. Two other village; Ujung Hyang and Bugbug recently joined an increasingly long list of villages
that are firmly declaring their rejection of the reclamation plan. Data from the Karangasem Public Works Agency (PU) states that, Seraya village –that is also well known for its gebug ende (war dance), has coastline along 13,764 meters and is divided into three administrative villages. West Seraya that has 2,618 meters of coastline; Central Seraya that has 5,094 and East Seraya that has 6,052 meters of coast. Karangasem has a total of about 85 kilometers of coastline, 33.3 kilometers of which have been damaged by abrasion, while only 200 meters have been fitted with revetments. (kmb31)

MANGUPURA - Japanese government finally agreed to assist Indonesia in the Government to Government (G to G) program in order to cope with abrasion in Indonesia, including in Badung. Reportedly, the cooperation will be agreed upon in April. This was justified by the Head of the Badung Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Agency, I Made Badra. According to him, local government will immediately hold a coordination meeting next week with the Coastal Management Coordination Team (TKMPT), consisting of technical institutions of the Environment Agency (BLH) and the
Regional Development Planning Board (Bappeda). “There has been an agreement from Japanese government. As information, signature of the cooperation between the Indonesian government and Japanese government will be made in April 2016,” said Made Badra as confirmed on Friday (Feb. 12). Moreover, he said that the BaliPenida River Agency has requested the data to local government in relation to the location that will get the priority in the handling of abrasion. “In principle, if there is something needed to be arranged, we will include in the handling. In this case,
we will include the Kedonganan Beach and Jimbaran Beach to get the priority,” he said. He described the coastal areas in Badung experience severe abrasion and require priority handling as they occur almost evenly ranging from the Cemagi, Seminyak, Legian to Kuta Beach. “For example, the abrasion in front of the cemetery of Kuta customary village occurs along 200 meters, Cemagi Beach along 100 meters and Canggu Beach along 200 meters,” he said. Unfortunately, Badra did not dare to make sure when the project can be realized because signature of the cooperation with
Japanese government will have just been made in the upcoming April. “Possibly the project can just be started in 2017. Currently, we only focus first on collecting data, which shoreline needs to be handled and how much budget will be needed, so this must be counted,” he said. BOGOTA - More than 5,000 pregnant Colombian women are infected with the mosquito-borne Zika virus, the country’s national health institute said on Saturday, as the disease continues its rapid spread across the Americas. more than 460 of these cases as microcephaly and identified evidence of Zika infection in 41 of these cases, but have not proven the virus can cause microcephaly. There are so far no recorded cases of Zika-linked microcephaly in Colombia, the government has said. Officials are still examining figures from countries such as Brazil, but say Colombia can expect between 500 and 600 cases this year. There is no vaccine or treatment for Zika, which causes mild fever, rash and red eyes. An estimated 80 percent of people infected have no symptoms. The institute said 29.4 percent of pregnant women with Zika live in Norte de Santander province, along the eastern border with Venezuela. Colombia’s Caribbean region,
which includes popular tourist destinations Cartagena and Santa Marta, had more than 12,488 cases of the virus, the bulletin showed. The government has said pregnant women with Zika are eligible to access much-restricted abortion services. Many women struggle to find abortion providers even when they meet strict legal requirements and illegal abortions are widespread. One Bogota abortion clinic said several women with Zika had come for consultations, but would not confirm if procedures took place. Local media reported what they said was the first abortion in the country because of Zika last week. Colombian authorities have urged women to delay pregnancy for six to eight months. The World Health Organization estimates Zika could eventually affect as many as 4 million people. Colombia expects up to 600,000 cases this year. Amanda Berry says she supports a peaceful protest against the lack of diversity outside the star-studded event, being held in London on Sunday. Berry told the Daily Telegraph newspaper that not enough movies are made with diverse talent so “the pool of people to draw award winners from isn’t diverse enough.” She added that “people can only vote on what they’ve seen.” Her comments follow a controversy surrounding racial diversity at the Oscars. Greek farmers end blockade of central Athens in tax dispute
ATHENS — Greek farmers protesting planned tax hikes and pension changes have left a central Athens square where they had been camped out since Friday but are vowing to keep protesting until the government listens. The farmers, who had set up 68 blockades with tractors and agricultural vehicles on highways across Greece, will convene Monday to decide how to proceed, farmers’ representative Vangelis Boutas said. He said they also want measures to lower production costs, such as tax-free diesel, cheaper electricity and no VAT on supplies. Earlier Saturday, police estimated that 12,000 protesters marched to Athens’ Syntagma Square outside Parliament to support the farmers. The march was called by unions allied with Greece’s Communist Party. Police also arrested a 30-year-old for attacking a patrol car during Friday’s clashes between farmers and police.(ap)

US stocks end a down week on an up note
U.S. stocks ended a down week on a high note Friday, snapping a five-day losing streak on the strength of energy and financial companies. A sharp rebound in oil prices and an encouraging report on retail sales helped lift the stock market to its first gain since late last week. Despite the rally, the major U.S. stocks indexes ended the week down about 1 percent and they remain down more than 8 percent for the year. “It’s a relief to see after several very ugly days in a row, but I wouldn’t hang my hat on it and say the worst is over,” said Rob Eschweiler, global investment specialist at J.P. Morgan. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 313.66 points, or 2 percent, to 15,973.84. The Standard & Poor’s 500 gained 35.70 points, or 2 percent, to 1,864.78. The Nasdaq composite added 70.67 points, or 1.7 percent, to 4,337.51. Global stocks have been in a slump since the beginning of the year on concerns that growth in China, which has been the engine of the global economy in recent years, is slowing far faster than expected. Plunging oil prices and low inflation have added to the market’s jitters that the global economy is sputtering. Those worries also helped drive the stock market lower in recent days, and continued to batter stocks in Asia. Japan’s main stock index
lost nearly 5 percent Friday. But the downbeat trend in the U.S. snapped as investors were encouraged by retail sales and a rally in European stocks. A surge in oil prices helped put investors in a buying mood early on. Brent crude, a benchmark for international oils, gained $3.30, or 11 percent, to $33.36 a barrel in London. The oil rebound sent the S&P 500’s energy companies 2.6 percent higher. Marathon Oil was the best performer in the sector, rising 48 cents, or 6.8 percent, to $7.49. “Oil, which has been one of the most fickle, most volatile series that everybody’s watching, is having a nice day,” said Tim Dreiling, regional investment director for The Private Client Reserve of U.S. Bank. “Europe is continuing to look good. And it looked like (the market) was oversold.” Financial shares led the market’s advance. The sector is the worst
performing part of the market this year because investors expect that low interest rates around the world will sap bank profits, but it rallied 4 percent Friday. JP Morgan Chase climbed $4.42, or 8.3 percent, to $57.49, while Citigroup added $2.56, or 7.3 percent, to $37.54. Bank of America rose 79 cents, or 7.1 percent, to $11.95. Meanwhile, Deutsche Bank AG surged 12.1 percent after the bank offered to buy back more than $5 billion in bonds in a display of financial strength. The stock gained $1.87 to $17.38. Traders also welcomed a report from the Commerce Department indicating a modest gain in retail sales last month. The data, which came in ahead of expectations, suggested that consumers kept shopping despite sharp drops in stock prices. The positive sales report and recent jobs data showing a pickup in wage growth suggest the economy is holding up better than Wall Street thinks, Eschweiler said. “It solidifies our view that the markets are pricing in a significantly higher probability of recession than what we think the fundamentals currently dictate,” he said. JAKARTA - Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa is to visit flood victims in Kualu village, Tambang sub-district, Kampar District, Riau Province. “I will see the locations affected by flooding in Kampar, and locations once hit by fires,” Minister Khofifah said, here, Saturday. She will present relief aid worth Rp696 million constituting food, clothes, and evacuation facilities. The Riau provincial authorities have declared a flood alert status as flooding has spread and killed two inhabitants, while precipitation is still high now. Three districts - Kampar, Rokan Hulu and
Kuantan Singingi, have also declared flood emergency status. The Riau disaster mitigation office has disbursed Rp500 million to help flood victims in Kampar and Rokan Hulu. In Kampar, 56 villages located in 12 sub-districts were submerged with floodwaters reaching a height of up to 1.7 meters. Some 26,614 families or 133,070 people were affected. Floods in Rokan Hulu spread to seven sub-districts, and affected at least 11,438 people. Indonesia is currently experiencing the peak of the rainy season that has caused flooding in several regions, including in West Sumatra, Bangka Belitung, North Sumatra, and West and East Kalimantan, in addition to West and Central Java, Jambi, and Aceh.(ant)

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has arrested an official of the Supreme Court (MA). “He is not a judge, but one of the heads of the sub-directorate,” KPK Chief Agus Rajardjo said in a short text message, here, Saturday. In an operation Friday evening, the agency caught six people including the MAs official red-handed. The KPK team also confiscated two cars and money in the operation in Jakarta. WELLINGTON - A strong 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck near Christchurch in New Zealand on Sunday, causing cliffs to collapse into the sea but no major damage to the city, which was devastated by a 2011 quake which killed nearly 200 people. The epicentre of Sunday’s quake on New Zealand’s south island was 15 kms (9 miles) east of Christchurch and at a shallow depth of 15 km (9 miles), said the country’s seismological body Geonet. Geonet said there were more than 40 aftershocks. The quake came eight days before the anniversary of the deadly 2011 quake that caused upwards of NZ$40 billion ($26.52 billion) of damage, causing much of the city to require a rebuild. Police
said there were no reports of major damage or serious injuries, but people were evacuated from several buildings and there were reports of some liquefaction. The Christchurch City Council said cliffs collapsed in several places along the surrounding coast, spreading large clouds of billowing dust across the sea and hills. “Obviously with a 5.7 magnitude earthquake so close to the eastern coast of Christchurch its certainly been a big shock for the city, a set back in terms of people’s confidence and feeling of security,” said Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel. “Our city is stronger than it was five years ago. Chelsea set for Champions League with 5-1 Newcastle rout
LONDON — Chelsea prepared for its Champions League trip to Paris Saint-Germain by routing Newcastle 5-1 on Saturday, the biggest win of a miserable Premier League season for the champions. Chelsea climbed to 12th place but the London club remains 14 points from fourth place. Winning the Champions League is the only way back into Europe’s elite competition next season and the challenge resumes in Paris in the round of 16 on Tuesday. Confidence will be high after this emphatic win over relegation-threatened Newcastle which saw Pedro Rodriguez score twice after Diego Costa’s fifth-minute opener while Willian and Bertrand Traore also netted. There was a blow for Chelsea, with captain John Terry coming off before halftime with a “small muscular problem” that will be assessed on Sunday, manager Guus Hiddink said. Hiddink remains unbeaten since replacing fired manager Jose Mourinho in December. “We tried to press from the first minute to surprise them and I think we did,” Hiddink told British broadcaster BT Sport. “We had an early goal and an
early second goal so that made them very unstable. “What, for me, is important is the good organization defensively and not dropping back.” Chelsea raced into a 3-0 lead inside 17 minutes and looked like champions, but that was mainly down to Newcastle’s calamitous defending as Steve McClaren’s team lost for the sixth straight away game to fall into the relegation zone below Norwich on goal difference. WELLINGTON - A strong 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck near Christchurch in New Zealand on Sunday, causing cliffs to collapse into the sea but no major damage to the city, which was devastated by a 2011 quake which killed nearly 200 people. The epicentre of Sunday’s quake on New Zealand’s south island was 15 kms (9 miles) east of Christchurch and at a shallow depth of 15 km (9 miles), said the country’s seismological body Geonet. Geonet said there were more than 40 aftershocks. The quake came eight days before the anniversary of the deadly 2011 quake that caused upwards of NZ$40 billion ($26.52 billion) of damage, causing much of the city to require a rebuild. Police
said there were no reports of major damage or serious injuries, but people were evacuated from several buildings and there were reports of some liquefaction. The Christchurch City Council said cliffs collapsed in several places along the surrounding coast, spreading large clouds of billowing dust across the sea and hills. “Obviously with a 5.7 magnitude earthquake so close to the eastern coast of Christchurch its certainly been a big shock for the city, a set back in terms of people’s confidence and feeling of security,” said Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel. “Our city is stronger than it was five years ago. Amanda Berry says she supports a peaceful protest against the lack of diversity outside the star-studded event, being held in London on Sunday. Berry told the Daily Telegraph newspaper that not enough movies are made with diverse talent so “the pool of people to draw award winners from isn’t diverse enough.” She added that “people can only vote on what they’ve seen.” Her comments follow a controversy surrounding racial diversity at the Oscars. Greek farmers end blockade of central Athens in tax dispute
ATHENS — Greek farmers protesting planned tax hikes and pension changes have left a central Athens square where they had been camped out since Friday but are vowing to keep protesting until the government listens. The farmers, who had set up 68 blockades with tractors and agricultural vehicles on highways across Greece, will convene Monday to decide how to proceed, farmers’ representative Vangelis Boutas said. He said they also want measures to lower production costs, such as tax-free diesel, cheaper electricity and no VAT on supplies. Earlier Saturday, police estimated that 12,000 protesters marched to Athens’ Syntagma Square outside Parliament to support the farmers. The march was called by unions allied with Greece’s Communist Party. Police also arrested a 30-year-old for attacking a patrol car during Friday’s clashes between farmers and police.(ap)

U.S. stocks ended a down week on a high note Friday, snapping a five-day losing streak on the strength of energy and financial companies. A sharp rebound in oil prices and an encouraging report on retail sales helped lift the stock market to its first gain since late last week. Despite the rally, the major U.S. stocks indexes ended the week down about 1 percent and they remain down more than 8 percent for the year. “It’s a relief to see after several very ugly days in a row, but I wouldn’t hang my hat on it and say the worst is over,” said Rob Eschweiler, global investment specialist at J.P. Morgan. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 313.66 points, or 2 percent, to 15,973.84. The Standard & Poor’s 500 gained 35.70 points, or 2 percent, to 1,864.78. The Nasdaq composite added 70.67 points, or 1.7 percent, to 4,337.51. Global stocks have been in a slump since the beginning of the year on concerns that growth in China, which has been the engine of the global economy in recent years, is slowing far faster than expected. Plunging oil prices and low inflation have added to the market’s jitters that the global economy is sputtering. Those worries also helped drive the stock market lower in recent days, and continued to batter stocks in Asia. Japan’s main stock index
lost nearly 5 percent Friday. But the downbeat trend in the U.S. snapped as investors were encouraged by retail sales and a rally in European stocks. A surge in oil prices helped put investors in a buying mood early on. Traders also welcomed a report from the Commerce Department indicating a modest gain in retail sales last month. The data, which came in ahead of expectations, suggested that consumers kept shopping despite sharp drops in stock prices. The positive sales report and recent jobs data showing a pickup in wage growth suggest the economy is holding up better than Wall Street thinks, Eschweiler said. “It solidifies our view that the markets are pricing in a significantly higher probability of recession than what we think the fundamentals currently dictate,” he said. JAKARTA - Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa is to visit flood victims in Kualu village, Tambang sub-district, Kampar District, Riau Province. “I will see the locations affected by flooding in Kampar, and locations once hit by fires,” Minister Khofifah said, here, Saturday. She will present relief aid worth Rp696 million constituting food, clothes, and evacuation facilities. The Riau provincial authorities have declared a flood alert status as flooding has spread and killed two inhabitants, while precipitation is still high now. Three districts - Kampar, Rokan Hulu and
Kuantan Singingi, have also declared flood emergency status. The Riau disaster mitigation office has disbursed Rp500 million to help flood victims in Kampar and Rokan Hulu. In Kampar, 56 villages located in 12 sub-districts were submerged with floodwaters reaching a height of up to 1.7 meters. Some 26,614 families or 133,070 people were affected. Floods in Rokan Hulu spread to seven sub-districts, and affected at least 11,438 people. AMLAPURA - Opposition to the Benoa Bay reclamation plan is becoming increasingly widespread. Seraya customary village, located on Bali’s east coast in Karangasem is the latest of many villages in Bali, to have taken a stand against the reclamation plan. Seraya’s village chief, Nyoman Matal, said on Friday (Feb. 12) that the reclamation at Benoa Bay would make Bali increasingly imbalanced and he is calling to other customary villages in Bali to also take a stand because –as Matal said, reclamation does not only affects coastal areas but is also a threat to nature, tradition and culture.
“It is referred to as revitalization but if it is being done in the interest of tourism it is unacceptable. South Bali is already overcrowded and jammed with traffic. Do not make Bali more and more unbalanced and dangerous” emphasized the former head of Karangasem’s paliament, Seraya Chief Nyoman Matal. According to Matal, if Bali is progressively made lame, it is fair to assume that the government is no longer thinking thoroughly about the welfare of Bali. He pointed out that, other parts of Bali, such as the Northern and Eastern regions have been waiting for a more equal distribution of the tourism pie and the prosperity that comes with it. If inequality and discrimination -in terms of distribution of wealth, continue to occur in Bali, he said, the peace of the Balinese people will be negatively affected. In reference to the notion of revitalization, Matal also spoke of the fact that nearly all of Bali’s coastlines have become damaged and are in need of ‘revitalization’ – not just Benoa Bay. Seraya’s village chief is therfor asking that both he government and investors not impose their will on the island. Bali, he explained, has unique features and aspects that cannot be equated with the kind of progress that reclamation might bring to other places. “Stop all activities related to reclamation in Bali. Public exposes on environmental impact analysis are no longer needed” he said.

Seraya customary village, located on Bali’s east coast in Karangasem is the latest of many villages in Bali, to have taken a stand against the reclamation plan. Since the express rejection of reclamation by the majority of Balinese people –particularly those living on the coasts, has been ignored by the government and by the investors, Matal is asking all customary villages in Bali to take a stance. The government, including the legislative assembly have, apparently been unable to speak on behalf of the public when it comes to excessive investors. In order that the aspirations of the customary villages of Bali be accommodated, Matal is urging the customary village general assembly (MUDP) of Bali (MUDP) to accommodate the aspirations of customary villagers who want to take action to safeguard Bali’s land.
Matal also asks that customary institutions remain calm in addressing the reclamation issue. Getting emotional or worse yet taking anarchic action, he said is not the way of the Balinese people. He did, however, insist that the attitudes expressed by the customary villages need to be taken very seriously, given that this institution represents the spirit of the people of Bali. Matal is urging the MUDP to immediately accommodate the aspirations of customary institutions in Bali who have begun to intensely voice their opposition to the Benoa Bay reclamation plan. Two other village; Ujung Hyang and Bugbug recently joined an increasingly long list of villages
that are firmly declaring their rejection of the reclamation plan. Data from the Karangasem Public Works Agency (PU) states that, Seraya village –that is also well known for its gebug ende (war dance), has coastline along 13,764 meters and is divided into three administrative villages. West Seraya that has 2,618 meters of coastline; Central Seraya that has 5,094 and East Seraya that has 6,052 meters of coast. Karangasem has a total of about 85 kilometers of coastline, 33.3 kilometers of which have been damaged by abrasion, while only 200 meters have been fitted with revetments. (kmb31)

MANGUPURA - Japanese government finally agreed to assist Indonesia in the Government to Government (G to G) program in order to cope with abrasion in Indonesia, including in Badung. Reportedly, the cooperation will be agreed upon in April. This was justified by the Head of the Badung Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Agency, I Made Badra. According to him, local government will immediately hold a coordination meeting next week with the Coastal Management Coordination Team (TKMPT), consisting of technical institutions of the Environment Agency (BLH) and the
Regional Development Planning Board (Bappeda). “There has been an agreement from Japanese government. As information, signature of the cooperation between the Indonesian government and Japanese government will be made in April 2016,” said Made Badra as confirmed on Friday (Feb. 12). Moreover, he said that the BaliPenida River Agency has requested the data to local government in relation to the location that will get the priority in the handling of abrasion. “In principle, if there is something needed to be arranged, we will include in the handling. In this case,
we will include the Kedonganan Beach and Jimbaran Beach to get the priority,” he said. He described the coastal areas in Badung experience severe abrasion and require priority handling as they occur almost evenly ranging from the Cemagi, Seminyak, Legian to Kuta Beach. “For example, the abrasion in front of the cemetery of Kuta customary village occurs along 200 meters, Cemagi Beach along 100 meters and Canggu Beach along 200 meters,” he said. BOGOTA - More than 5,000 pregnant Colombian women are infected with the mosquito-borne Zika virus, the country’s national health institute said on Saturday, as the disease continues its rapid spread across the Americas. more than 460 of these cases as microcephaly and identified evidence of Zika infection in 41 of these cases, but have not proven the virus can cause microcephaly. There are so far no recorded cases of Zika-linked microcephaly in Colombia, the government has said. Officials are still examining figures from countries such as Brazil, but say Colombia can expect between 500 and 600 cases this year. There is no vaccine or treatment for Zika, which causes mild fever, rash and red eyes. An estimated 80 percent of people infected have no symptoms. The institute said 29.4 percent of pregnant women with Zika live in Norte de Santander province, along the eastern border with Venezuela. Colombia’s Caribbean region,
which includes popular tourist destinations Cartagena and Santa Marta, had more than 12,488 cases of the virus, the bulletin showed. The government has said pregnant women with Zika are eligible to access much-restricted abortion services. Many women struggle to find abortion providers even when they meet strict legal requirements and illegal abortions are widespread. One Bogota abortion clinic said several women with Zika had come for consultations, but would not confirm if procedures took place. Local media reported what they said was the first abortion in the country because of Zika last week. Colombian authorities have urged women to delay pregnancy for six to eight months. The World Health Organization estimates Zika could eventually affect as many as 4 million people. Colombia expects up to 600,000 cases this year. The market potential of LCGC in Bali, said Indra, make PT. Nissan Motor Indonesia (NIM) as producer of Datsun, decided to focus more in Bali. “We see the market potential in Bali still high,” he said. Datsun in 2014 had issued two variants of LCGCs, Datsun GO (two-row passengers) and Datsun GO+ (three-row passengers). He said the response on these two variants in Bali has been quite positive. Since its launch, sales of these two products reach about 100 units per month, dominated by Datsun GO+. “In terms of market size, LGCG reach about 500-600 units per month and Datsun market share around 12 percent,” he said. For 2016, he is optimistic Datsun to sell about 160 units per month. He argued there are several areas, like Singaraja,

SEMARAPURA - The waters of Nusa Penida, Klungkung, have claimed another victim. This time, a tourist from China named Zhu Guangyao, 58, died as he was swept away while swimming swimming at Dream Beach, in Lembongan village on Friday afternoon (Feb. 12). After a 30 minute search conducted by police officer in the area where the victim had been swept away, the tourist’s body was found floating in the sea. Chief of the Klungkung Water Police, I Putu Ardana, on Friday, confirmed that the Chinese tourist’s body had been found drowned. He explained that the victim and his wife, son and daughter were holidaying on Nusa Lembongan. They had arrived from Sanur Beach and arrived at Tanjung Sangyang Harbor in Lembongan at around 10:00 a.m. They then hired a small boat and enjoyed sightseeing around the island. When they arrived at Dream Beach, the victim was impressed with the beauty of the coastal panorama of Batu Belek. The victim decided to take a dip in the water while his wife and kids waited onboard. “After swimming for a few minutes the victim was then seized by waves and drowned”, said Putu Ardana. The victim’s wife, Li Yasen, 57, along with her son and daughter immediately cried for help from the people around them. Nearby residents and the Water Police started searching for the victim right away. Due to the bad weather conditions at the time, it took about thirty minutes to finally locate the victim, whose body was found floating dead. The body was taken to the Nusa Penida health center II for a post mortem medical examination, from which it was determined that he had died of a ruptured lung from having taken in too much sea water. “After having been taken to the health center, the victim’s body was then immediately ferried back to Sanur by the surviving family and commended at the Sanglah Hospital morgue” said Putu Ardana. Parwata added that his office has encouraged the increasing number of investments in Bali especially in the areas experiencing economic slowdown such as North Bali, West Bali and East Bali. Various facilities for investors have also been set forth in the regional bylaw draft on the Provision of Incentives and Investment Facility for Investor and the Public currently being verified in the Minister of Home Affairs. “It has been set forth so that it can motivate or stimulate foreign and domestic investment to invest in Bali. Balinese Temple Ceremony
Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

I’m going to be less stressed out. In the commercial breaks, I’ll get to talk to more people. I’m not afraid to say hello and things like that,” she said. “I’m going to use this as a

West said on Friday that Swift, whose “1989” album was the world’s best seller in 2014, had approved the lyrics to “Famous.” “I did not diss Taylor Swift and I’ve never dissed her,” West said in a string of Twitter postings.
