Ed Sheeran and Dua Lipa dominate Brit Award nominations LONDON - Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa, Liam Payne and Stormzy are among the nominees for this year’s Brit Awards, Britain’s most prestigious pop music prizes. Sheeran is in the running in four categories - British male solo artist, best video and single for “Shape of You”, and best album. Singer Dua Lipa received the most nominations. Her single “New Rules” was a break out hit last year and she is nominated in five categories including best album, best female artist and best single. And former One Direction star Payne was nominated for best single and video for “Strip That Down”, which has now been a hit in Britain, Australia and United States. “The song’s done extremely

Plane skids off Turkish runway on Black Sea coast, passengers unhurt
ISTANBUL - A Pegasus Airlines flight skidded off the runway of a Turkish coastal airport and ended up halfway down a steep slope into the Black Sea, but no passengers or crew were hurt, Turkish media reported on Sunday. The incident happened on Saturday night at Trabzon airport in northeast Turkey. Pictures from the site showed the plane’s nose close to the water’s edge. which Pegasus Airlines described in a statement as a “runway excursion”. The airport, situated in the Turkish province of the same name, was closed for several hours afterwards but has since reopened. Social media users reacted to the footage of the crash, with some saying it was “incredible it stopped where it did”. “How lucky are

DiCaprio to star in Charles Manson-era Tarantino movie
LOS ANGELES - Leonardo DiCaprio will star in a movie set around the Charles Manson murders, Hollywood entertainment publications reported on Friday, but he will not play the role of the American cult leader.

DiCaprio will instead take the part of an aging, out-of-work actor in the as-yet untitled movie being produced and directed by Oscarwinner Quentin Tarantino, Variety and Deadline.com said. Plot details have not been released but Tarantino said in November that it was not a biographical movie but a story set during the summer of 1969, when a string of gruesome killings in Southern California were carried out by Manson’s followers.
Manson, one of the 20th century’s most notorious criminals, died in November at the age of 83. He had been serving a life sentence for ordering the murders of nine people including actress Sharon Tate. The Sony Pictures movie is to be released on Aug. 9, 2019, exactly 50 years after Tate and four friends were stabbed or shot dead. Deadline and Variety said that Australian actress Margot Robbie has been asked to play Sharon
Tate. Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Al Pacino are also rumored to be interested, or are being sought, for the movie. Sony Pictures, part of Sony Corp, did not return a request for comment on the casting. The movie will be the first Tarantino film to be released without the Weinstein Company following allegations by more than 70 women of sexual misconduct against its former chief executive Harvey Weinstein. After radius of disater-prone area reduced
Head of Information and Public Relations of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said that as of Friday (Jan. 12), there were still 51,914 evacuees spread over some 232 evacuation posts. The phreatic eruption on Thursday did not pose a threat to flight safety and Ngruah Rai Airport is still operating as usual. Volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Agung did not reach the City of Denpasar. There was some volcanic ashfall in area to the north and north east of Mount Agung. The distribution of ash fall was only very close to Mount Agung as the ash burst only reached 2, 500 kilometers above the great mountain. The weather that day was cloudy and rainy around most of the mountain. According to information from Pasebaya, there awas thin volcanic ash-fall in Tulamben, Rubaya and Dukuh Kubu. People’s activities were not interrupted and there was no panic in these communities. People are nonetheless encouraged to remain calm.
Mount Agung is still experiencing volcanic activity and the alert level for the mountain remains at “warning”. It is still possible that the volcano will erupt explosively. The public is being urged to continue to comply with the government’s recommendation that no activities take place within a radius of 6 kilometers from the peak of the mountain. “Nobody should climb the mountain and certainly not be anywhere near the crater because it is still dangerous. The area beyond 6 kilometers of the crater is safe and normal activities are taking place”, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. PVMBG in its official release on Friday (Jan. 12) stated that the maximum amplitude of the latest eruption was recorded as 27 mm (over scale) with a duration of 130 seconds. In addition to the area within the direct vicinity of the peak, volcanic ashes also spread northward and northeastward following the wind. In line with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), in an effort to improve safety, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) issued a code orange Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA. If the height of the eruption column is more than 6,000 meters above sea level, the a code red will be issued which means that pilots should avoid the area around Mount Agung. Mount Agung which stands at a height of 3,142 meters has showed signs of volcanic activity since since September 2017 and continues to show sign of varying degrees of activity. After a series of some 27,000 small earthquakes known as tremors, the volcano first erupted on November 21, 2017. The most intense eruptions to date occurred on November 27-28, 2017 when the height of the eruption column of ash reaches about 4,000 meters above the peak of Mount Agung or more than 7,000 meters above sea level. AMLAPURA - A week after the the radius of the disaster-prone area of Mount Agung was reduced to 6 km from the summit, there remain some 53, 000 people living in evacuation posts while another 21,000 have returned to their home on the lower slopes of Mount Agung. Although there was another small eruption on Thursday Afternoon (Jan 11), apparently none of the evacuees that had returned home panicked or returned to the evacuation posts. It would appear that they have grown accustomed to Mount Agung having small eruptions at any time.

Rice stocks run out, relying on supply from Klungkung
AMLAPURA - After a the most recent small eruption of Mount Agung, commander of the Mount Agung eruption task-force, Benny Rahadian, intensified the disaster evaluation meeting at Tanah Ampo Command Post, Manggis, Karangasem, on Friday (Jan. 12). The coordinators of each field were asked to report the latest conditions in the filed in order to optimize the handling of evacuees. One urgent matter is the rice stocks for the evacuees that have been running out since January 5. Currently they are relying on Klungkung for their supply of rice In the evaluation meeting it was revealed that rice stocks were temporarily being borrowed from the Klungkung Logisitcs Agency (Bulog) while waiting for the rice reserves from the central Bulog to be dropped off. The funds for rice stocks accounted for in the main regional budget ( APBD) 2018 are still being processed. Currently the need for rice can still be fulfilled, however there is fear that this might not be the case for long. The Public Works and Housing (PUPR) Agency conveyed that several evacuees posts are also facing a decrease in the amount of water being discharged. Also the irrigation channels in Tangkup, Selat and Bebandem that were damaged by the eruption will be fixed this year. Clean water springs in the 6 km radius disaster-prone area that were affected by the eruption will also be mapped. Municipal Waterworks (PDAM) pipelines within the 6 km radius that have been damaged will
also be discussed further with the PDAM. In terms of livestock, it was revealed that there are currently 3, 200 head of livestocks spread across evacuation posts in five subdistricts. Feed for the livestock is no longer an issue as a lot of feed is being provided and livestock owners are being proactive in looking for feed to keep their cows healthy. Since the radius of the disasterprone area was reduced from 8 km to 6 km, there are now 18 elementary schools, 2 junior high schools in 5 subdistricts located between 8 and 6 kilometers of the crater of Mount Agung. Teachers have told their students that if there is a large eruption the kentongan (bamboo wooden split gate) will be sounded. Students are expected not to panic if there is really a large eruption. “ Schools located within the radius of 6 km are certainly closed”, said the Taskforce commander In response to the reduction of the radius of the disaster-prone area, Head of the Karangasem Education Agency, Gusti Ngurah Kartika, has asked teachers from schools within the 6 kilometer radius to temporarily teach in the evacuation posts. The Taskforce commander also asked that all people in charge of different areas continue to work hard as the volcanic activity of Mount Agung is still fluctuating. If conditions remain like this until March, each evacuation post needs to be ready to facilitate evacuees in carrying out the Hindu holiday of abstinence known as Nyepi. (kmb31)

Qin Shi Huang Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum BEIJING - A remarkable sight appeared in 1974, near the ancient capital of Xi’an. Some farmers happened to dig up what turned out to be a large-scale pit with terracotta soldiers and horses, belonging to the Emperor Qin Shi Huang, or the Founding Emperor of the Qin. After 2,200 years, the Emperor’s tremendous army stood as though living again before people’s eyes. The figures that the farmers found were around the size of real people. The pit was in Shaanxi Province, Lintong County, Jiangzhai xichang Village. It was around three Chinese li, or roughly one mile, from the east side of the Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s tomb mound. The Chinese Cultural Relics Administrative Department immediately organized its forces and carried out an investigation. After further excavation they actually found that the area of the discovery was a great deal larger and that inside this area were buried some 6,000 terracotta figures of horses
and soldiers. After this, archaeologists discovered a second and third pit of horses and soldiers: the first discovery was called #1 pit, nearby in test excavations they discovered pits #2 and #3. Linked together, the three pits covered an area of 20,000 square meters and included around 8,000 figures. To bury an entire army of individual soldiers under the ground was unheard of in the world. This ancient phenomenon gave evidence to the world of the Chinese people’s sophistication and rich cultural heritage. It is no wonder that the former French Premier expressed amazement when he saw it, ‘The Qin terracotta pit is one of the marvels of the world. To go to Egypt and not see the pyramids is not really going to Egypt; to go to China and not see this sight is not really going to China.’ In order to better protect this historical treasure house, a building was put over the #1 pit which has a bow-shaped steel framework,
to form a vast exhibition hall. The building is 230 meters long, 72 meters wide, and 22 meters high. It can hold two football fields inside. The Qin Shi Huang Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum was officially inaugurated and opened to the public in 1979. Standing inside the hall over #1 pit, people can see over 1,000 of the horses and soldiers that have been excavated and cleaned up; the rest of the 5,000 are in the process of being cleaned, one by one. The army is arrayed in a rectangular formation, all facing east. In front are three rows each with 210 warriors making up the front ranks, after them are marching soldiers and horses drawing war chariots, making up the main body of this army. The two sides of the army and the rear each have a line of warriors, divided to face south, north, west - this was perhaps to maintain a contingent for the sides and the rear of the hall, to guard against rear attack.
The terracotta statues, horses and people, are roughly the same size as real horses and people, the proportions are extremely accurate. This reflects the high level of sculptural arts at the time of the Qin dynasty. From the placement, the hair and clothing styles and weaponry of the statues, one can generally understand their rank and position. Some wear tunics, some carry shields, some have their hair tied in a bun, some wear footwear while others do not, some have armor breastplates, some have fishscale armour. Soldiers with relatively long beards are placed towards the rear, and one sees at a glance that they are seasoned older generals. In addition to foot soldiers there are also some cavalry members leading horses or driving chariots. Some of the soldiers are kneeling, ready to shoot their arrows: each has a special posture according to his duties. In terms of finer features, the statues are remarkably lifelike. The
head and facial expression of each soldier is different, so that clearly each was the work of a sculptor and they were not produced from a mold. Through fine detail on the eyebrows, face, mouth and nose, the internal character and rich expressions of each soldier are expressed. Some of the statues were clearly northwest minority peoples, which also shows the origins of the Qin-dynasty soldiers. The cavalry and war chariots had an extremely important place in ancient armies. Those examples excavated from the pit included steeds that were vigorous and fat. Their ears were erect, their eyes wide and mouths open, they were generally 1.5 high, with smallish heads and relatively short legs. Some people say that these horses seem to resemble the Hequ Horses found in Gansu today or the Hetian Horses found in Xinjiang, which are excellent racehorses, good at climbing slopes, and also are excellent warhorses with great strength. MANGUPURA — The district of Badung has reduced the number of homes that will be part of the home refurbishment program in 2018 (RTS), from 525 to just 150 homes. Head of the Badung Housing and Settlement Agency, AAN Bayu Kumara Putra, explained that a total of 150 homes have already been refurbished with a total budget of IDR 8.2 billion. “We will allocate funds for the remaiing 717 homes in the program next year”, said AAN Kumara when contacted on Wednesday (Jan. 10). AAN Kumara added that he hopes that the home refurbishment program can be completed no later than 2019. “The home refurbishment for 2017 is completed. A total of 625 target households have been selected”, he said. If the district of Badung’s financial condition is better this coming year, then the budget for the home refurbishment program may be increased, so that less people will need the program in 2019. The number of targeted households that were verified in 2017 based on proposals from village authorities amounted to 3,815 households in Badung. They consist of 841 households targeted for total renovations with funding of IDR 55 million, 794 households for partial renovations with funding of IDR 30 million and light improvements to some 1,190 targeted homes with a funding of IDR 15 million. Habitable home assistance was accorded to 625 homes in 2017 with grants of IDR 55 million each
while the rest will be proposed in the Regional Budget 2018 and Regional Budget 2019. Social assistance funds for home refurbishment is transferred directly to the accounts of beneficiaries according to the decree of determination issued by the regent of Badung. Of the 625 beneficiaries of habitable homes, Petang subdistrict receives aid allocation of 111 RTS, Abiansemal (264), Mengwi (244), North Kuta (3) and South Kuta (3) originating from 45 villages in Badung. Deputy Regent of Badung, Ketut Suiasa, previously explained that a healthy house consists of 2 bedrooms, 1 living room and 1 bathroom or toilet. This program is expected to be accounted properly and correctly, including reporting that must include receipts from the purchase of materials. “Hopefully, village headmen can monitor and oversee the use of the funds provided to those in need to ensure that they are properly utilized to improve people’s welfare”, he added. Suiasa further explained that the habitable house program is part of the District of Badung’s ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of the community – in this case those 3,300 houses targeted for improvement. Gradually they will all have improvement made to their facilities and infrastructure. “This assistance is meant to lift people out of poverty and encourage people to improve their lives by being pro-active, diligent and hard working”, he concluded. Kemenuh Butterfly Park also serves as a conservation area and as local tour guide Gusdek explained this butterfly is considered a rare sight as they only live for 5 days. There entire like cycle from caterpillar to cocoon to butterfly takes about 2 months. The Kemenuh Butterfly Park consists of a main butterfly garden, an artificial waterfall decorated with a butterfly statue and artificial bridges, as well as a larvae breeding area and butterfly house. The larvae breeding area serves as a shelter for the larvae before they become caterpillars as is only planted with erythrina trees and protected by a giant net. The larvae or worms hang out in the erythrina trees eating their leaves and will continue to do so until they become caterpillars and take refuge in their cocoons. The cocoons are then moved to the cocoon house to

protect them from the rain. “Many cocoons perish during the rainy season, so we made this house to protect them”, said Gusdek. The butterflies also seek refuge in the cocoon house. Most of the visitors to the Kemnenuh Butterfly Park are foregin tourists. When Bali Post visited this tourist attraction, there were visibly more foreingers with only about 5- 10 percent local tourirts. Gusdek added that most visitors are from Europe while Chinese tourists tend to come in groups. Hundreds of butterflies fill the park as as one enters the garden butterflies can be seen fluttering to and fro amongst the flowers. “This is like a giant butterfly house”, said an Arab tourist. After passing through the main garden, visitors arrive at the artificial waterfall. From there a coral path then leads to the breeding area and then the cocoon breeding area where the trees are filled with larvae and coccoon. The area is not too vaste so it is easy to see all the groungs. Upon leaving the area, two large butterflies were seen perched on the edge of their former coocoon indicating that they had just hatched. (kmb42)

Another advantage of hydroponic farming is that crops can be harvested 30 percent faster than conventionally grown crops. “There are many benefits to hydroponic gardening. For one it does not require large areas of land but also crops can be harvested in a shorted time with a more stable and higher level of quality”, said Handoyo. For now, Australia’s plans for cannabis market dominance are more smoke than fire
SYDNEY - When Australia said this month it would allow exports of medicinal cannabis in a bid to dominate a global market set to be worth $55 billion by 2025, investors scrambled to buy shares in marijuana companies - pushing several of them, and the sector as a whole, to record highs. But convoluted and restrictive licensing demands, substantial finance requirements and a guarded medical profession means even Australia’s largest marijuana companies are at least a year away from a commercial crop. And doubts linger about the prospects for smaller entities, belying the government’s ambitious plans to be the world’s leading exporter. “There will be more cannabis used in Australia and overseas over the next 10, 20 and 50 years but it is not clear that any of the local market can capture that, let alone make money from it,” said Scott Phillips, director of research at investment company Motley Fool. “Look at the gold rush: sure, some made money, but the biggest winners were the sellers of the shovels.” Australia’s medicinal cannabis sector, with 12 listed companies, produces a range of products that include chronic pain management and acne creams with extracts of marijuana to aid acne. The businesses acknowledge some barriers to growth but say they are primed to profit from a maturing market. Australia already produces 50 percent of the world’s legal pop-

SYDNEY - About 1,500 people are being evacuated from an island off the northern coast of Papua New Guinea (PNG) after a nearby volcano erupted, the local Red Cross said on Sunday. A volcano on the island of Kadovar, located about 24 km (15 miles) north of the Papuan mainland, began erupting on Jan. 5. That prompted the evacuation of 590 people on Kadovar to the nearby island of Blup Blup. After venting ash for several days, the volcano exploded on Friday, blasting out glowing red rocks and sulphur dioxide, the Rabaul Volcanological Observatory said in a bulletin. The PNG government then decided to evacuate Blup Blup as well because of issues with supplying people on the island along with the danger from the eruption. The evacuees are being moved to the mainland and the International Red
Cross is providing about 87,000 kina ($26,274) in funding to help them, said PNG Red Cross Secretary General Uvenama Rova by telephone from the capital of Port Moresby. “The people there, as the volcano erupted, they rushed immediately to escape. The pig proceeded to loosen the soil and formed a mound resembling a hill, in an attempt to distract Ida Pedanda Hender from his meditation. One of Ida Pendanda Hender’s companions however saw what the pig was doing and shooed the pig away. Because the mound abandoned by the huge pig resembled a hill, Ida Pedanda Hender then named the location Buung Hill. In his meditation Ida Pedanda Hender however did manage to find the location of the spring that he was looking for. He then resumed his pilgrimage northwards until he reached the location of the Sudamala spring.

In fact, thanks to the Tirta Sudamala, the local community finally managed to keep the monkeys from invading their paddy fields. As promised, the community then established a temple called Tirta Sudamala Temple. Until now, Tirta Sudamala Temple is supported by the community of Sedit hamle. Ballistic missile warning sent in error by Hawaii authorities
HONOLULU - An emergency alert was sent mistakenly on Saturday to Hawaii’s residents warning of an imminent ballistic missile attack when an employee at the state emergency management agency pushed the “wrong button,” Hawaii’s governor said.
State officials and the U.S. military’s Pacific Command confirmed that there was no actual threat to the state. But for more than a half hour, while the agency struggled to retract the warning, panicked Hawaiians scrambled to find shelter. The mistaken alert stated: “EMERGENCY ALERT BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.” The alert, sent to mobile phones and aired on television and radio shortly after 8 a.m., was issued amid high international tensions over North Korea’s development of ballistic nuclear weapons. Governor David Ige told a news conference he was “angry and disappointed” over the incident, apologized for it and said the state would take steps to ensure it nevers happen again. “What happened today was totally unacceptable,”
the Democratic governor said. Ige said the alert was sent during a employee shift change at the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, and that the state had no automated process to get out the word that it was a false alarm. Vern Miyagi, the agency’s administrator, called it “human error.” “An employee pushed the wrong button,” Ige said. Stacey Bow, 56, of Honolulu, said she received the emergency alert on her smart phone. She awakened her 16-year-old daughter with the news. “She became hysterical, crying, you know, just lost it,” she said. Ige said the emergency management agency after the incident ordered a change in its procedures requiring two employees, not just one, to send out such an alert in the future. He said such shift changes occur three times a day every day of the year. Miyagi, who said Hawaii would have only 12 to 13 minutes of warning in an actual attack, declined to say what action would be taken against the employee. Miyagi said the agency routinely tests its emergency alert system and that employee thought he was conducting a test, not realizing he had transmitted the warning with a two-step process on a computer screen until receiving it on his own cellphone minutes later. Israel says destroyed Gaza attack tunnel under Israel, Egypt borders GAZA - The Israeli military said on Sunday it had destroyed a cross-border attack tunnel that ran from Gaza into Israel and Egypt, dug by the Hamas, the Islamist group that controls the Palestinian enclave. Residents in Gaza said Israeli jets bombed an area east of the southern town of Rafah, by the Egyptian and Israeli borders, late on Saturday night. Israel confirmed the attack immediately after, but gave no details until Sunday. There was no immediate comment from Hamas or Egypt, or any reports of casualties. Tensions have risen since President Donald Trump reversed decades of U.S. policy on Dec. 6 by recognising Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Gaza militants have launched 18 cross-border rockets or mortar bombs, causing no fatalities or serious injuries in Israel, and 15 protesters and two gunmen have been killed by Israeli fire. The attacks from Gaza, which Israel has blamed on groups not affiliated with Hamas, have drawn Israeli air strikes, usually on targets that have been evacuated. “There are those who say the Israeli military attacks sand dunes - that is incorrect,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, addressing criticism from lawmakers who have called for a stronger armed response, told reporters after the tunnel was targeted. Netanyahu cautioned Hamas that Israel “will respond with even greater force” if rocket strikes continue. Israel has said Hamas, as the dominant force in Gaza, bears overall responsibility for any attacks from the enclave. But Yoav Galant, a member of Netanyahu’s security cabinet, said on Army Radio that Israel is “not looking for confrontation with Hamas”. Colonel Jonathan Conricus, an Israeli military spokesman, described the target hit on Saturday as 1.5 km (one mile)-lone “terror tunnel” running the Kerem Shalom border crossing into Israel, and into Egypt. “It could also have served to transfer terrorists from the Gaza Strip into Egypt in order to attack Israeli targets from Egypt,” he said. Kerem Shalom, the main passage point for goods entering Gaza, was shut down on Saturday before the Israeli attack. Underground tunnels are used to smuggle in all manner of commerical goods to Gaza, and to bring in weapons for militants from Hamas and other groups. They have also been used by Hamas to launch attacks inside Israel. During the last Gaza war, in 2014, Hamas fighters used dozens of tunnels to blindside Israel’s superior forces. The Israeli military said it has destroyed three tunnels in the past two months. JAKARTA - Several hundred Indonesian Islamists held a protest rally outside Facebook’s headquarters in Jakarta on Friday, accusing the social media giant of discrimination for blocking some pages operated by hardline groups for allegedly spreading hate. The protesters, many dressed in white and including members of the hardline Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), marched from a mosque to Facebook’s offices in the capital of the world’s biggest Muslimmajority country.
“We want to remind Facebook to remain neutral and balanced,” Slamet Maarif, a spokesman for FPI, told reporters. “There are many accounts that spread hate about Islam, ulamas, that are allowed to operate. There are accounts that talk about Islamic humanitarian aid, those are blocked,” said Maarif, adding that the group still planned to use Facebook and intended to open new accounts. Facebook said its policy was to delete content that violated its community standards. “Our community standards are made to prevent organisations or individuals that urge hate speech or violence against those who hold different views,” said a company representative, who declined to be identified. A spokesman for Indonesia’s communications ministry, Semuel Pangerapan, said, “We have never requested that FPI’s accounts be closed.” Some Islamist groups in Indonesia use social media extensively and FPI usually has about 100 accounts on Facebook, as well as on other social media platforms such as Twitter. The rally was peaceful, though more than 1,200 police officers were brought in to guard the offices, media said. Indonesians are avid users of social media and Facebook had 115 million users in the second quarter of 2017, according to media citing its country manager, ranking the country fourth globally after the United States, India and Brazil. Some of the protesters on Friday made live video streams of the rally to air via Facebook. UN Indonesia earthquake plan foresees 47 million affected, 10,000 dead
GENEVA - A U.N. contingency plan for an earthquake in Indonesia foresees a scenario where 10,000 people would die within 24 hours with 47 million more affected, according to emergency response planning documents. The U.N.-led exercise to prepare for disaster in one of the world’s most quake-prone regions, is based on a magnitude 7.8 quake in the Sunda Strait, close to the capital Jakarta, similar in size to one that struck the Caribbean this week. “Within the first 24 hours, approximately 10,000 deaths with a substantial number of missing people is reported,” said the contingency plan based on a worst-case scenario. A further 60,000 people would be seri-
ously injured and 200,000 lightly injured, while 9.6 million would be temporarily displaced. Although 2.5 million people would need immediate help, fewer than one in 10 would get it. Electricity and telephone networks would go down for as long as two weeks, and large scale oil and chemical spills would cause fires and disrupt fuel supplies for a week after the quake. There would be major disruption to air and sea ports. In 2004 the Indian Ocean tsunami killed 226,000 people in 13 countries, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia. Since then, a culture of disaster prevention has spread around the world, said Denis McClean, spokesman for the U.N. Office for
Disaster Risk Reduction. Indonesia has established disaster management agencies at national and local levels and a tsunami warning system, he said. But as in most earthquake-prone countries, it needed to improve building regulations. “It is buildings which kill in earthquakes,” McClean said. The scenario, which assumes an earthquake affecting west Java and Sumatra with no tsunami, was developed by Indonesia’s geophysics and meteorological agency BMKG, based on a huge 1699 earthquake in Batavia, the location of modern-day Jakarta. Further scenario modelling should look into multiple disasters such as a tsunami
or flooding in a big city, bringing in more accurate data on damaged buildings and infrastructure, the documents said. The World Bank reckons natural disasters cost Indonesia 0.3 percent of its GDP annually, but a 2015 report on disaster risk management prepared by Indonesia’s government said a major earthquake, occuring once every 250 years, could cause losses in excess of $30 billion, or 3 percent of GDP. In December a 6.5 magnitude quake killed at least three people when it hit Java, Indonesia’s most densely populated island, at a depth of 92 km (57 miles), and buildings in Jakarta swayed for several seconds. LA PAZ - Spaniard Carlos Sainz seized the lead in the Dakar Rally from Peugeot team mate Stephane Peterhansel on Saturday after the defending champion struck a rock and lost an hour and 45 minutes repairing his car. Ballistic missile warning sent in error by Hawaii authorities
HONOLULU - An emergency alert was sent mistakenly on Saturday to Hawaii’s residents warning of an imminent ballistic missile attack when an employee at the state emergency management agency pushed the “wrong button,” Hawaii’s governor said.
State officials and the U.S. military’s Pacific Command confirmed that there was no actual threat to the state. But for more than a half hour, while the agency struggled to retract the warning, panicked Hawaiians scrambled to find shelter. The mistaken alert stated: “EMERGENCY ALERT BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.” The alert, sent to mobile phones and aired on television and radio shortly after 8 a.m., was issued amid high international tensions over North Korea’s development of ballistic nuclear weapons. Governor David Ige told a news conference he was “angry and disappointed” over the incident, apologized for it and said the state would take steps to ensure it nevers happen again. “What happened today was totally unacceptable,”
the Democratic governor said. Ige said the alert was sent during a employee shift change at the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, and that the state had no automated process to get out the word that it was a false alarm. Vern Miyagi, the agency’s administrator, called it “human error.” “An employee pushed the wrong button,” Ige said. Stacey Bow, 56, of Honolulu, said she received the emergency alert on her smart phone. She awakened her 16-year-old daughter with the news. “She became hysterical, crying, you know, just lost it,” she said. Ige said the emergency management agency after the incident ordered a change in its procedures requiring two employees, not just one, to send out such an alert in the future. He said such shift changes occur three times a day every day of the year. Miyagi, who said Hawaii would have only 12 to 13 minutes of warning in an actual attack, declined to say what action would be taken against the employee. Miyagi said the agency routinely tests its emergency alert system and that employee thought he was conducting a test, not realizing he had transmitted the warning with a two-step process on a computer screen until receiving it on his own cellphone minutes later. Israel says destroyed Gaza attack tunnel under Israel, Egypt borders GAZA - The Israeli military said on Sunday it had destroyed a cross-border attack tunnel that ran from Gaza into Israel and Egypt, dug by the Hamas, the Islamist group that controls the Palestinian enclave. Residents in Gaza said Israeli jets bombed an area east of the southern town of Rafah, by the Egyptian and Israeli borders, late on Saturday night. Israel confirmed the attack immediately after, but gave no details until Sunday. There was no immediate comment from Hamas or Egypt, or any reports of casualties. Tensions have risen since President Donald Trump reversed decades of U.S. policy on Dec. 6 by recognising Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Gaza militants have launched 18 cross-border rockets or mortar bombs, causing no fatalities or serious injuries in Israel, and 15 protesters and two gunmen have been killed by Israeli fire. The attacks from Gaza, which Israel has blamed on groups not affiliated with Hamas, have drawn Israeli air strikes, usually on targets that have been evacuated. “There are those who say the Israeli military attacks sand dunes - that is incorrect,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, addressing criticism from lawmakers who have called for a stronger armed response, told reporters after the tunnel was targeted. Netanyahu cautioned Hamas that Israel “will respond with even greater force” if rocket strikes continue. Israel has said Hamas, as the dominant force in Gaza, bears overall responsibility for any attacks from the enclave. But Yoav Galant, a member of Netanyahu’s security cabinet, said on Army Radio that Israel is “not looking for confrontation with Hamas”. Nonetheless, he said Israel “could not abide by a situation in which Israelis are harmed by fire (from Gaza)”. Colonel Jonathan Conricus, an Israeli military spokesman, described the target hit on Saturday as 1.5 km (one mile)-lone “terror tunnel” running the Kerem Shalom border crossing into Israel, and into Egypt. “It could also have served to transfer terrorists from the Gaza Strip into Egypt in order to attack Israeli targets from Egypt,” he said. Kerem Shalom, the main passage point for goods entering Gaza, was shut down on Saturday before the Israeli attack. Underground tunnels are used to smuggle in all manner of commerical goods to Gaza, and to bring in weapons for militants from Hamas and other groups. They have also been used by Hamas to launch attacks inside Israel. During the last Gaza war, in 2014, Hamas fighters used dozens of tunnels to blindside Israel’s superior forces. The Israeli military said it has destroyed three tunnels in the past two months. Israel has been constructing a sensor-equipped underground wall along the 60-km (36-mile) Gaza border, aiming to complete the $1.1 billion project by mid-2019. (rtr)
JAKARTA - Several hundred Indonesian Islamists held a protest rally outside Facebook’s headquarters in Jakarta on Friday, accusing the social media giant of discrimination for blocking some pages operated by hardline groups for allegedly spreading hate. The protesters, many dressed in white and including members of the hardline Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), marched from a mosque to Facebook’s offices in the capital of the world’s biggest Muslimmajority country.
“We want to remind Facebook to remain neutral and balanced,” Slamet Maarif, a spokesman for FPI, told reporters. “There are many accounts that spread hate about Islam, ulamas, that are allowed to operate. There are accounts that talk about Islamic humanitarian aid, those are blocked,” said Maarif, adding that the group still planned to use Facebook and intended to open new accounts. Facebook said its policy was to delete content that violated its community standards. “Our community standards are made to prevent organisations or individuals that urge hate speech or violence against those who hold different views,” said a company representative, who declined to be identified. A spokesman for Indonesia’s communications ministry, Semuel Pangerapan, said, “We have never requested that FPI’s accounts be closed.” Some Islamist groups in Indonesia use social media extensively and FPI usually has about 100 accounts on Facebook, as well as on other social media platforms such as Twitter. The rally was peaceful, though more than 1,200 police officers were brought in to guard the offices, media said. Indonesians are avid users of social media and Facebook had 115 million users in the second quarter of 2017, according to media citing its country manager, ranking the country fourth globally after the United States, India and Brazil. Some of the protesters on Friday made live video streams of the rally to air via Facebook. The vast majority of Indonesians practice a moderate form of Islam, though a reputation for religious tolerance has come under scrutiny as hardline groups muscle their way into public and political life in the young democracy. President Joko Widodo has expressed concerns over hoax stories and hate speech spread online and has pledged to “clobber” any group threatening to destroy Indonesia’s tradition of pluralism and moderate Islam. At a rally late last year in Jakarta by Muslims opposing U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, a body of Muslim clerics urged a boycott of U.S. and Israel products if Trump did not revoke his action. UN Indonesia earthquake plan foresees 47 million affected, 10,000 dead
GENEVA - A U.N. contingency plan for an earthquake in Indonesia foresees a scenario where 10,000 people would die within 24 hours with 47 million more affected, according to emergency response planning documents. The U.N.-led exercise to prepare for disaster in one of the world’s most quake-prone regions, is based on a magnitude 7.8 quake in the Sunda Strait, close to the capital Jakarta, similar in size to one that struck the Caribbean this week. “Within the first 24 hours, approximately 10,000 deaths with a substantial number of missing people is reported,” said the contingency plan based on a worst-case scenario. A further 60,000 people would be seri-
ously injured and 200,000 lightly injured, while 9.6 million would be temporarily displaced. Although 2.5 million people would need immediate help, fewer than one in 10 would get it. Electricity and telephone networks would go down for as long as two weeks, and large scale oil and chemical spills would cause fires and disrupt fuel supplies for a week after the quake. There would be major disruption to air and sea ports. In 2004 the Indian Ocean tsunami killed 226,000 people in 13 countries, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia. Since then, a culture of disaster prevention has spread around the world, said Denis McClean, spokesman for the U.N. Office for
Disaster Risk Reduction. Indonesia has established disaster management agencies at national and local levels and a tsunami warning system, he said. But as in most earthquake-prone countries, it needed to improve building regulations. “It is buildings which kill in earthquakes,” McClean said. The scenario, which assumes an earthquake affecting west Java and Sumatra with no tsunami, was developed by Indonesia’s geophysics and meteorological agency BMKG, based on a huge 1699 earthquake in Batavia, the location of modern-day Jakarta. Further scenario modelling should look into multiple disasters such as a tsunami
or flooding in a big city, bringing in more accurate data on damaged buildings and infrastructure, the documents said. The World Bank reckons natural disasters cost Indonesia 0.3 percent of its GDP annually, but a 2015 report on disaster risk management prepared by Indonesia’s government said a major earthquake, occuring once every 250 years, could cause losses in excess of $30 billion, or 3 percent of GDP. In December a 6.5 magnitude quake killed at least three people when it hit Java, Indonesia’s most densely populated island, at a depth of 92 km (57 miles), and buildings in Jakarta swayed for several seconds. One of Ida Pendanda Hender’s companions however saw what the pig was doing and shooed the pig away. Because the mound abandoned by the huge pig resembled a hill, Ida Pedanda Hender then named the location Buung Hill. In his meditation Ida Pedanda Hender however did manage to find the location of the spring that he was looking for. He then resumed his pilgrimage northwards until he reached the location of the Sudamala spring.

The shrine was built near the current Tirta Sudamala water spouts. “Our senior figures once made a vow that Tirta Sudamala woould be able to repel pests attacking their crops, if they set up a temple near the location of Tirta Sudamala” explained hamlet chief Kariadnya. In fact, thanks to the Tirta Sudamala, the local community finally managed to keep the monkeys from invading their paddy fields. As promised, the community then established a temple called Tirta Sudamala Temple. Until now, Tirta Sudamala Temple is supported by the community of Sedit hamle. DENPASAR — Lacking vast expanses of land is not reason to give up on gardening. There are always ways to plant in narrow spaces and besides this calming activity yields many benefits for both the environment and people as the more plants there are the more oxygen is produced which is certainly beneficial for humans. Gardening is also good for the health as it requires light exercise and calms the mind. Owner of Bali Fruit Garden, Made Sumertana explained that although he never formally studied agriculture, he has mastered certain gardening techniques. His gardening business also helps him remain fit and agile. “Farming is a fun and healthy activity”, he added. One of the agricultural systems that he promotes is container gardening or growing fruit plants in pots as this method does not require extensive lands. Fruit trees planted in pots can still yield fruit even when they are small, there is not need to wait for the tree to grow to full size. Using certain methods of urban gardening, an area of just 100 meters can yield as much as 2000 square meters of land planted the conventional way. “With container gardening techniques trees can be moved and arranged. Even dwarf sized plants can bear enough fruit to make money”,explained Sumertana. Hydroponics and verticulture techniques can also be used in limited spaces. Hydroponics is a technique of farming that relies solely on water and certain additives instead of soil. Chairman of the Bali Hydroponics Community, Handoyo, said that another advantage of hydroponics
system is that when the vegetable garden in the area Bedugul fail to harvest due to bad weather, hydroponically gorwn crops are not affected. Hydroponically grown crops are not affected by climate with either, too much rain or drought, the plants still survive, he said. “When vegetable farmers in Bedugul face crop failure it causes vegetable prices to soar. This problem can be overcome with hydroponic farming”,said Handoyo. If hydroponic agriculture is developed in Bali he said, the scarcity caused by seasonal vegetable supplies will no longer occur. Another advantage of hydroponic farming is that crops can be harvested 30 percent faster than conventionally grown crops. “There are many benefits to hydroponic gardening. For one it does not require large areas of land but also crops can be harvested in a shorted time with a more stable and higher level of quality”, said Handoyo. For now, Australia’s plans for cannabis market dominance are more smoke than fire
SYDNEY - When Australia said this month it would allow exports of medicinal cannabis in a bid to dominate a global market set to be worth $55 billion by 2025, investors scrambled to buy shares in marijuana companies - pushing several of them, and the sector as a whole, to record highs. But convoluted and restrictive licensing demands, substantial finance requirements and a guarded medical profession means even Australia’s largest marijuana companies are at least a year away from a commercial crop. And doubts linger about the prospects for smaller entities, belying the government’s ambitious plans to be the world’s leading exporter. “There will be more cannabis used in Australia and overseas over the next 10, 20 and 50 years but it is not clear that any of the local market can capture that, let alone make money from it,” said Scott Phillips, director of research at investment company Motley Fool. “Look at the gold rush: sure, some made money, but the biggest winners were the sellers of the shovels.” Australia’s medicinal cannabis sector, with 12 listed companies, produces a range of products that include chronic pain management and acne creams with extracts of marijuana to aid acne. The businesses acknowledge some barriers to growth but say they are primed to profit from a maturing market. Australia already produces 50 percent of the world’s legal pop-

SYDNEY - About 1,500 people are being evacuated from an island off the northern coast of Papua New Guinea (PNG) after a nearby volcano erupted, the local Red Cross said on Sunday. A volcano on the island of Kadovar, located about 24 km (15 miles) north of the Papuan mainland, began erupting on Jan. 5. That prompted the evacuation of 590 people on Kadovar to the nearby island of Blup Blup. After venting ash for several days, the volcano exploded on Friday, blasting out glowing red rocks and sulphur dioxide, the Rabaul Volcanological Observatory said in a bulletin. The PNG government then decided to evacuate Blup Blup as well because of issues with supplying people on the island along with the danger from the eruption. The evacuees are being moved to the mainland and the International Red
Cross is providing about 87,000 kina ($26,274) in funding to help them, said PNG Red Cross Secretary General Uvenama Rova by telephone from the capital of Port Moresby. “The people there, as the volcano erupted, they rushed immediately to escape. So they are in immediate need of food, water, shelter and clothing as well,” he said. Qin Shi Huang Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum BEIJING - A remarkable sight appeared in 1974, near the ancient capital of Xi’an. Some farmers happened to dig up what turned out to be a large-scale pit with terracotta soldiers and horses, belonging to the Emperor Qin Shi Huang, or the Founding Emperor of the Qin. After 2,200 years, the Emperor’s tremendous army stood as though living again before people’s eyes. The figures that the farmers found were around the size of real people. The pit was in Shaanxi Province, Lintong County, Jiangzhai xichang Village. It was around three Chinese li, or roughly one mile, from the east side of the Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s tomb mound. The Chinese Cultural Relics Administrative Department immediately organized its forces and carried out an investigation. After further excavation they actually found that the area of the discovery was a great deal larger and that inside this area were buried some 6,000 terracotta figures of horses
and soldiers. After this, archaeologists discovered a second and third pit of horses and soldiers: the first discovery was called #1 pit, nearby in test excavations they discovered pits #2 and #3. Linked together, the three pits covered an area of 20,000 square meters and included around 8,000 figures. To bury an entire army of individual soldiers under the ground was unheard of in the world. This ancient phenomenon gave evidence to the world of the Chinese people’s sophistication and rich cultural heritage. It is no wonder that the former French Premier expressed amazement when he saw it, ‘The Qin terracotta pit is one of the marvels of the world. To go to Egypt and not see the pyramids is not really going to Egypt; to go to China and not see this sight is not really going to China.’ In order to better protect this historical treasure house, a building was put over the #1 pit which has a bow-shaped steel framework,
to form a vast exhibition hall. The building is 230 meters long, 72 meters wide, and 22 meters high. It can hold two football fields inside. The Qin Shi Huang Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum was officially inaugurated and opened to the public in 1979. Standing inside the hall over #1 pit, people can see over 1,000 of the horses and soldiers that have been excavated and cleaned up; the rest of the 5,000 are in the process of being cleaned, one by one. The army is arrayed in a rectangular formation, all facing east. In front are three rows each with 210 warriors making up the front ranks, after them are marching soldiers and horses drawing war chariots, making up the main body of this army. The two sides of the army and the rear each have a line of warriors, divided to face south, north, west - this was perhaps to maintain a contingent for the sides and the rear of the hall, to guard against rear attack.
The terracotta statues, horses and people, are roughly the same size as real horses and people, the proportions are extremely accurate. This reflects the high level of sculptural arts at the time of the Qin dynasty. From the placement, the hair and clothing styles and weaponry of the statues, one can generally understand their rank and position. Some wear tunics, some carry shields, some have their hair tied in a bun, some wear footwear while others do not, some have armor breastplates, some have fishscale armour. Soldiers with relatively long beards are placed towards the rear, and one sees at a glance that they are seasoned older generals. In addition to foot soldiers there are also some cavalry members leading horses or driving chariots. Some of the soldiers are kneeling, ready to shoot their arrows: each has a special posture according to his duties. In terms of finer features, the statues are remarkably lifelike. The
head and facial expression of each soldier is different, so that clearly each was the work of a sculptor and they were not produced from a mold. Through fine detail on the eyebrows, face, mouth and nose, the internal character and rich expressions of each soldier are expressed. Some of the statues were clearly northwest minority peoples, which also shows the origins of the Qin-dynasty soldiers. The cavalry and war chariots had an extremely important place in ancient armies. Those examples excavated from the pit included steeds that were vigorous and fat. Their ears were erect, their eyes wide and mouths open, they were generally 1.5 high, with smallish heads and relatively short legs. Some people say that these horses seem to resemble the Hequ Horses found in Gansu today or the Hetian Horses found in Xinjiang, which are excellent racehorses, good at climbing slopes, and also are excellent warhorses with great strength. MANGUPURA — The district of Badung has reduced the number of homes that will be part of the home refurbishment program in 2018 (RTS), from 525 to just 150 homes. Head of the Badung Housing and Settlement Agency, AAN Bayu Kumara Putra, explained that a total of 150 homes have already been refurbished with a total budget of IDR 8.2 billion. “We will allocate funds for the remaiing 717 homes in the program next year”, said AAN Kumara when contacted on Wednesday (Jan. 10). AAN Kumara added that he hopes that the home refurbishment program can be completed no later than 2019. “The home refurbishment for 2017 is completed. A total of 625 target households have been selected”, he said. If the district of Badung’s financial condition is better this coming year, then the budget for the home refurbishment program may be increased, so that less people will need the program in 2019. The number of targeted households that were verified in 2017 based on proposals from village authorities amounted to 3,815 households in Badung. They consist of 841 households targeted for total renovations with funding of IDR 55 million, 794 households for partial renovations with funding of IDR 30 million and light improvements to some 1,190 targeted homes with a funding of IDR 15 million. Habitable home assistance was accorded to 625 homes in 2017 with grants of IDR 55 million each
while the rest will be proposed in the Regional Budget 2018 and Regional Budget 2019. Social assistance funds for home refurbishment is transferred directly to the accounts of beneficiaries according to the decree of determination issued by the regent of Badung. Of the 625 beneficiaries of habitable homes, Petang subdistrict receives aid allocation of 111 RTS, Abiansemal (264), Mengwi (244), North Kuta (3) and South Kuta (3) originating from 45 villages in Badung. Deputy Regent of Badung, Ketut Suiasa, previously explained that a healthy house consists of 2 bedrooms, 1 living room and 1 bathroom or toilet. This program is expected to be accounted properly and correctly, including reporting that must include receipts from the purchase of materials. “Hopefully, village headmen can monitor and oversee the use of the funds provided to those in need to ensure that they are properly utilized to improve people’s welfare”, he added. Suiasa further explained that the habitable house program is part of the District of Badung’s ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of the community – in this case those 3,300 houses targeted for improvement. Gradually they will all have improvement made to their facilities and infrastructure. “This assistance is meant to lift people out of poverty and encourage people to improve their lives by being pro-active, diligent and hard working”, he concluded. The Kemenuh Butterfly Park consists of a main butterfly garden, an artificial waterfall decorated with a butterfly statue and artificial bridges, as well as a larvae breeding area and butterfly house. The larvae breeding area serves as a shelter for the larvae before they become caterpillars as is only planted with erythrina trees and protected by a giant net. The larvae or worms hang out in the erythrina trees eating their leaves and will continue to do so until they become caterpillars and take refuge in their cocoons. protect them from the rain. “Many cocoons perish during the rainy season, so we made this house to protect them”, said Gusdek. The butterflies also seek refuge in the cocoon house. Most of the visitors to the Kemnenuh Butterfly Park are foregin tourists. When Bali Post visited this tourist attraction, there were visibly more foreingers with only about 5- 10 percent local tourirts. Gusdek added that most visitors are from Europe while Chinese tourists tend to come in groups. Hundreds of butterflies fill the park as as one enters the garden butterflies can be seen fluttering to and fro amongst the flowers. “This is like a giant butterfly house”, said an Arab tourist. After passing through the main garden, visitors arrive at the artificial waterfall. From there a coral path then leads to the breeding area and then the cocoon breeding area where the trees are filled with larvae and coccoon. The area is not too vaste so it is easy to see all the groungs. Upon leaving the area, two large butterflies were seen perched on the edge of their former coocoon indicating that they had just hatched. (kmb42)

Head of Information and Public Relations of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said that as of Friday (Jan. 12), there were still 51,914 evacuees spread over some 232 evacuation posts. The phreatic eruption on Thursday did not pose a threat to flight safety and Ngruah Rai Airport is still operating as usual. Volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Agung did not reach the City of Denpasar. There was some volcanic ashfall in area to the north and north east of Mount Agung. The distribution of ash fall was only very close to Mount Agung as the ash burst only reached 2, 500 kilometers above the great mountain. The weather that day was cloudy and rainy around most of the mountain. According to information from Pasebaya, there awas thin volcanic ash-fall in Tulamben, Rubaya and Dukuh Kubu. People’s activities were not interrupted and there was no panic in these communities. People are nonetheless encouraged to remain calm.
Mount Agung is still experiencing volcanic activity and the alert level for the mountain remains at “warning”. It is still possible that the volcano will erupt explosively. The public is being urged to continue to comply with the government’s recommendation that no activities take place within a radius of 6 kilometers from the peak of the mountain. “Nobody should climb the mountain and certainly not be anywhere near the crater because it is still dangerous. The area beyond 6 kilometers of the crater is safe and normal activities are taking place”, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. PVMBG in its official release on Friday (Jan. 12) stated that the maximum amplitude of the latest eruption was recorded as 27 mm (over scale) with a duration of 130 seconds. In addition to the area within the direct vicinity of the peak, volcanic ashes also spread northward and northeastward following the wind. In line with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), in an effort to improve safety, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) issued a code orange Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA. If the height of the eruption column is more than 6,000 meters above sea level, the a code red will be issued which means that pilots should avoid the area around Mount Agung. Mount Agung which stands at a height of 3,142 meters has showed signs of volcanic activity since since September 2017 and continues to show sign of varying degrees of activity. After a series of some 27,000 small earthquakes known as tremors, the volcano first erupted on November 21, 2017. The most intense eruptions to date occurred on November 27-28, 2017 when the height of the eruption column of ash reaches about 4,000 meters above the peak of Mount Agung or more than 7,000 meters above sea level. Although there was another small eruption on Thursday Afternoon (Jan 11), apparently none of the evacuees that had returned home panicked or returned to the evacuation posts. Rice stocks run out, relying on supply from Klungkung
AMLAPURA - After a the most recent small eruption of Mount Agung, commander of the Mount Agung eruption task-force, Benny Rahadian, intensified the disaster evaluation meeting at Tanah Ampo Command Post, Manggis, Karangasem, on Friday (Jan. 12). The coordinators of each field were asked to report the latest conditions in the filed in order to optimize the handling of evacuees. One urgent matter is the rice stocks for the evacuees that have been running out since January 5. Currently they are relying on Klungkung for their supply of rice In the evaluation meeting it was revealed that rice stocks were temporarily being borrowed from the Klungkung Logisitcs Agency (Bulog) while waiting for the rice reserves from the central Bulog to be dropped off. The funds for rice stocks accounted for in the main regional budget ( APBD) 2018 are still being processed. Currently the need for rice can still be fulfilled, however there is fear that this might not be the case for long. The Public Works and Housing (PUPR) Agency conveyed that several evacuees posts are also facing a decrease in the amount of water being discharged. Also the irrigation channels in Tangkup, Selat and Bebandem that were damaged by the eruption will be fixed this year. Clean water springs in the 6 km radius disaster-prone area that were affected by the eruption will also be mapped. Municipal Waterworks (PDAM) pipelines within the 6 km radius that have been damaged will
also be discussed further with the PDAM. In terms of livestock, it was revealed that there are currently 3, 200 head of livestocks spread across evacuation posts in five subdistricts. Feed for the livestock is no longer an issue as a lot of feed is being provided and livestock owners are being proactive in looking for feed to keep their cows healthy. Since the radius of the disasterprone area was reduced from 8 km to 6 km, there are now 18 elementary schools, 2 junior high schools in 5 subdistricts located between 8 and 6 kilometers of the crater of Mount Agung. Ed Sheeran and Dua Lipa dominate Brit Award nominations LONDON - Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa, Liam Payne and Stormzy are among the nominees for this year’s Brit Awards, Britain’s most prestigious pop music prizes. Sheeran is in the running in four categories - British male solo artist, best video and single for “Shape of You”, and best album. Singer Dua Lipa received the most nominations. Plane skids off Turkish runway on Black Sea coast, passengers unhurt
ISTANBUL - A Pegasus Airlines flight skidded off the runway of a Turkish coastal airport and ended up halfway down a steep slope into the Black Sea, but no passengers or crew were hurt, Turkish media reported on Sunday. The incident happened on Saturday night at Trabzon airport in northeast Turkey. Pictures from the site showed the plane’s nose close to the water’s edge. LOS ANGELES - Leonardo DiCaprio will star in a movie set around the Charles Manson murders, Hollywood entertainment publications reported on Friday, but he will not play the role of the American cult leader.

DiCaprio will instead take the part of an aging, out-of-work actor in the as-yet untitled movie being produced and directed by Oscarwinner Quentin Tarantino, Variety and Deadline.com said. Plot details have not been released but Tarantino said in November that it was not a biographical movie but a story set during the summer of 1969, when a string of gruesome killings in Southern California were carried out by Manson’s followers.
Manson, one of the 20th century’s most notorious criminals, died in November at the age of 83. He had been serving a life sentence for ordering the murders of nine people including actress Sharon Tate. The Sony Pictures movie is to be released on Aug. 9, 2019, exactly 50 years after Tate and four friends were stabbed or shot dead. Deadline and Variety said that Australian actress Margot Robbie has been asked to play Sharon
Tate. Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Al Pacino are also rumored to be interested, or are being sought, for the movie. Sony Pictures, part of Sony Corp, did not return a request for comment on the casting. The movie will be the first Tarantino film to be released without the Weinstein Company following allegations by more than 70 women of sexual misconduct against its former chief executive Harvey Weinstein.
