‘Transformers’ sequel leads Razzies ‘worst-of’ list

LOS ANGELES — “Transformers: Age of Extinction” is rolling out with the most nominations at this year’s Golden Raspberry Awards. The action sequel starring Mark Wahlberg alongside morphing robots led all films Tuesday with seven nominations, including worst picture, worst sequel, worst screenplay and worst screen combo. “Transformers” is also up for worst director for Michael Bay, worst supporting actress for Nicola Peltz, and worst supporting actor for Kelsey Grammer, who was also recognized for his supporting parts in “The Expendables 3,” ‘’Legends of Oz” and “Think Like a Man Too.” The nominations were released to The Associated Press on Tuesday ahead of an official announcement on Wednesday. This year’s other worst picture

nominees are “Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas,” ‘’Left Behind,” ‘’The Legend of Hercules” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” The faith-based comedy “Saving Christmas” and the Kellan Lutz action flick “Legend of Hercules” both collected six nominations, including worst actor for Cameron and Lutz. The nominees for worst screen combo are Cameron and his ego in “Saving Christmas”; Seth MacFarlane and Charlize Theron in “A Million Ways To Die in the West”; any two robots, actors (or robotic actors) in “Transformers”; Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel in “Sex Tape”; and Lutz and either his abs, pecs or glutes in “Legend

of Hercules.” The Razzies, which launched in 1980 as a spoof of Hollywood’s awards season, added a new category this year called the redeemer award that lauds past Razzie honorees. The inaugural redeemer award nominees are: Ben Affleck for being praised for both “Argo” and “Gone Girl” after winning the worst actor trophy in 2004 for “Gigli,” ‘’Daredevil” and “Paycheck”; Jennifer Aniston for her Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for “Cake” following four Razzie nods; Mike Myers for earning acclaim as the director of the documentary “Supermensch” after winning three Razzies for

“Love Guru” in 2008; six-time Razzie nominee Keanu Reeves for rebounding with “John Wick”; and “Twilight” star and former Razzie recipient Kristen Stewart for earning rave reviews for the indie film “Camp X-Ray.” The Razzies announcement came ahead of Thursday’s Oscar nominations. The winners of the 35th annual Razzies are selected by online votes from the organization’s 757 members. They will be announced at Hollywood’s Montalban Theater on Feb. 21, the night before the 87th annual Academy Awards. Currently, there are some 70,000 doses of rabies vaccines available

from the 2014 program. The health office is set to buy 250 more doses for the prevention and control program for this year. The issue of rabies receives serious attention in Bali as dogs have always been an integral part of Balinese culture. In 2011, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, with the support of the USAID and the World Society for

rabies virus in Bali through an innovative strategy of the comprehensive mass vaccination of dogs. Since May 2011, the provincial and local governments of Bali, in coordination with the Directorate General of Livestock and Animal Health Services of the Ministry of Agriculture, have been carrying out an island-wide dog vaccination campaign to ensure that 70 percent of the dog population is vaccinated, in order to prevente the transmis-

sion of the virus. As a result of these efforts, there was a decline in the number of human rabies cases from eleven per month in 2010 to just one per month the next year. There was another major decline in 2012 and again in 2013, when the number of reported cases dropped to only for the whole year. The FAO noted that the model developed in Bali is now being modified and used in other affected parts of Indonesia to progressively control and eliminate the virus throughout the country. Cekik weighbridge chaotic

Reject to be repatriated, hundreds of truck driver protest

NEGARA - Officers from the Bali Transportation Agency in charge of the Cekik weighbridge, in Gilimanuk, took firm action against the drivers of overloaded trucks on Tuesday (Jan 13). Guarded by Jembrana Police personnel, the roadblock conducted between 11:00am and 12:30 pm, sent all overloaded trucks heading for Bali, back to Java The strict verifications on cargo trucks, was led by Chief Technical Officer of the Weighbridge, I Wayan Aryana, accompanied by Weighbridge Coordinator, Made Ardana. Police enforcement, was led by the Division Head of Operations of the Jembrana Police, Ketut Sukarta. As anticipated, the hour-long operations at the weighbridge resulted in long queues along 500 meters of Jalan Raya Denpasar-Gilimanuk. Hundreds of trucks filled the road and many drivers refused to take the blame for their overstocked trucks, saying that they hade made it though the weight check in Java. There was nearly a hectare filled with trucks as a result of the operations. More than 100 drivers were found to be in violation of weigh restrictions and some protested about being ticketed and asked to return to where they had come from. One driver came up to the counter to deliver his complaints. Many drivers protested in a very tense atmosphere, saying that they were being harmed by the policy “We all agreed that we are not prepared to be sent home from Gilimanuk, considering that we passed the examination in Java, and how are we suppose to

pay for our trip back?” asked some drivers. Similarly, drivers requested that the restriction of freight at the weighbridge should be applied consistently and jointly on the Java side, so that they would not cross over to Gilimanuk for nothing. “This way of dealing with us is harmful to us, as the freight we carry must be taken back to Java” said Sanurin, one of the drivers carrying ironwood from Pulukan. He admitted that he was carrying 4 tons more of freight that is permitted. Ahmad Saroni who was transporting bulk cement to Singaraja gave similar arguments. “I am carrying 5 tons over the 23 tons of freight we are allowed, but if I am asked to turn around, the cement will harden and who will bear this loss?” he said curtly. Nyoman Nada, another truck driver transporting building materials, said that if he could not afford the fuel costs of returning to Java, as it costs as much as IDR 800,000 to go from Surabaya to Bali. “If I have to go back, who pay for it? Our boss will definitely not want to because the stock has been delivered to the driver,” he said. One driver revealed that his boss, who had opened Java-Bali trading lines, would not want to run his shipments with the allowed tonnage,

because he would be functioning at a loss. “Despite the limitation on freight weight the goods must also be delivered to their destination -we are driving” he said. Some of the drivers, showed reporters the type of official compensation letter that the weighbridges in East Java(Probolingo and Pasuran), provides them with for overloaded trucks. They also receive a payment of IDR 50,000. “Why are is this provided in Java and not in Bali? If the rules vary between the islands, we are put in a difficult situation” said Nada. Overwhelmed by the actions of the drivers and the increasingly long line of trucks, the Chief Technical Officer (UPT) of the Weighbridge,

Bali Transportation Agency, I Wayan Aryana, discussed the matter with police and decided to allow the drivers to continue their journey but still issued tickets to them. The Bali transportation agency nonetheless reminded the drivers that ticketing and sending trucks back, would still occur in the future. Pursuant to regulations, his party could only tolerate a certain amount of overweight freight. “However, for now, we will tolerate the violations as a stage in the coaching process,” he said. As for the drivers’ request for a compensation letter of regarding certain costs for overloaded trucks, Aryana said that he would convey this to his superiors at the provincial level.

However according to Aryana, regulations for land transportation state no the weighbridges are allowed to charge for overweight freight, but because the roads in Java can handle more weight, there was perhaps more lenience there. His party would therefore also suggest that the weightbearing capacityof highways in Bali be made similar to those in Java. The weight checking incident came some time after, the Minister of Transportation, Ignasius Jonan, while checking the Gilimanuk weighbridge, instructed the officers there to see that all overloaded vehicles be sent back to their hometown as a way to deter trucks form continuing this practice. DENPASAR - Two barges moored at Benoa Harbor, Denpasar, Tuesday (Jan 6) were reported missing to Benoa Harbor Police on Tuesday (Jan 6). Surprisingly, Bali Police and Denpasar Police officials deny having heard anything about the case. “I have not received any reports about the incident. Let me check” said Spokesperson of Bali Police, Hery Wiyanto, Tuesday (Jan 13).

Nengah Sadiarta, Chief of Denpasar Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit also denied any knowledge of such an incident “I have not received any report yet. Let me check first with the subdistrict police chief,” he added. According to information obtained in the field, a businessman from Banjarmasin, Kalimantan, lost two barges that were moored at the Bumi Pasir

Mandiri pier, Benoa Harbor. In December 2014, the owner of the barges planned to bring the barges back to Banjarmasin by towing them with other vessels. He was shocked to find that the two barges worth IDR 6 billion were gone. The incident was allegedly reported to the Benoa Harbor Police however until now, the investigation of the case remains unclear.

According to an unnamed source, the two missing boats named boats Rahmat 01 and Barito 04, were reported missing on Tuesday (Jan 6) by the businessman from Bajarmasin, Kalimantan. “The barges went missing from their mooring at Bumi Pasir Mandiri Pier, Benoa Harbor,” explained the unnamed source. The source went on to explain that the two barges, Rahmat 01 and

Barito 04, were originally brought in from Banjarmasin in 2013 to transport stakes for the Benoa-Nusa Dua toll road development project. After the project was completed, the two jumbo-sized barges were moored at Bumi Pasir Mandiri Pier. “At that time, the barge owner had hired people to take care of the vessels,” said a police source declining to be named. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

PARIS - It’s true: working too hard can drive you to drink, said researchers Wednesday who warned of the health risks of such dual excess. An overview of studies covering more than 400,000 people showed that individuals who exceed 48 working hours per week -- the European Union’s suggested maximum -- are likelier to consume “risky” quantities of alcohol, they said. The paper, published in The BMJ journal, reported that long working hours boosted the likelihood of higher alcohol intake by 11 percent overall. People who worked 49-54 hours a week ran a 13-percent higher risk of developing a “risky alcohol use” habit compared to counterparts who worked a 35-40-hour work week. Those working 55 hours or more were 12 percent more at risk. “Risky” alcohol use was defined as more than 14 units per week for a woman and more than 21 for a man -- levels that have been linked to a higher risk for liver and heart disease, cancer, stroke and mental

disorders. An alcohol unit is the equivalent of a third of a pint of mediumstrength beer, half a 175-millilitre (six fluid ounces) glass of red wine with 12 percent alcohol by volume, or a 25 ml-shot of whisky, The findings add statistical backing to anecdotal evidence for a link between excessive work and alcohol abuse, the authors said. More than a dozen developed economies were covered by the research, including Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan and the United States. “This meta-analysis supports the longstanding suspicion that among workers subjected to long working hours, alcohol can seem like a fast acting and effective way to dull work-related aches and pains and smooth the transition between work life and home life,” Cas-

sandra Okechukwu of the Harvard School of Public Health wrote in an editorial. Long working hours have previously been linked to cardiovascular disease, depression and anxiety. The increased risk of developing a “risky” drinking habit from overwork was small in absolute terms, Okechukwu said. Also, having a job was associated with a lower prevalence of alcohol consumption and a higher chance of recovery from alcohol misuse than being unemployed. Even so, the risk should be taken seriously. “Any exposure associated with avoidable increases in disease or health damaging behaviour, or both, warrants careful examination,” said Okechukwu. “Indeed, these findings could add impetus to further regulation of working hours as a public health intervention.” (afp)

PARIS - Women who use a specific type of injectable birth control have a slightly higher risk of HIV infection than those who take the pill, said a study Friday. While the authors noted the link was “statistically significant”, they warned it was not enough on its own to justify a complete withdrawal of the drug commonly known by its brand name, Depo-Provera, used by millions of women. The health risks of pulling the medicine from shelves may far outweigh the potential preventable HIV infections, the authors argued in a paper published in prestigious medical journal The Lancet Infectious Diseases. A meta-analysis of 12 studies involving nearly 40,000 women in sub-Saharan Africa, showed that use of depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), “increases a woman’s chance of becoming infected with HIV by 40 percent compared with women using other contraceptive methods or no method,” said a statement. “Although statistically significant, this represents only a moderate increase in relative risk,” it added. The increase in risk was somewhat lower among women “in the general

population” than for those already at higher HIV risk, like sex workers. The analysis showed no increased risk for users of other contraceptive drugs. All the studies had factored in condom use. “The moderate elevation in risk observed in our study is not enough to justify a complete withdrawal of DMPA for women in the general population,” said study co-author Lauren Ralph of the University of California at Berkeley. Banning DMPA, the most widely used injectable contraceptive, “would leave many women without immediate access to alternative, effective contraceptive options. “This is likely to lead to more unintended pregnancies, and because childbirth remains life-threatening in many developing countries, could increase overall deaths among women.” Further research was urgently needed to examine the danger for the highest risk women like sex workers and those in a relationship with an HIV-positive partner. A potential association between DMPA and higher HIV-risk was first noted in 1991, but numerous studies have failed to show a direct causal link. (afp)

Combination therapy shows promise in early breast tumors MIAMI - Treatment combining low-dose chemotherapy and the targeted drug trastuzumab showed promise in women with early stage breast cancer of a type called HER2positive, US researchers said Wednesday. Women receiving the treatment were highly unlikely to see their cancer return, said the study in the New England Journal of Medicine analyzing a regimen that including the chemotherapy agent paclitaxel and the targeted drug under the brand name Herceptin. Three years after completing the combination therapy, “98.7 percent of the participants were alive and free of invasive breast cancer,” said the study led by researchers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Massachusetts. The phase II trial involved 406 women whose tumors were smaller than three centimeters and had not spread to their lymph nodes. They were treated with the drug combination for 12 weeks, followed by nine months of Herceptin alone. “Women with small, HER-2 positive, node-negative breast tumors

have a low, but still significant, risk of recurrence of their disease,” said the study’s senior author, Eric Winer, director of the Breast Oncology Program at the Susan F. Smith Center for Women’s Cancers at Dana-Farber. “This study demonstrates that a combination of lower-intensity chemotherapy and trastuzumab -- which is associated with fewer side effects than traditional chemotherapy regimens -- is an appealing standard of care for this group of patients.” Approaches to treating women with HER2-positive breast cancer -- which means their cells have extra human epidermal growth factor receptors on their surface -- have varied widely but often involve a stronger regimen of chemotherapy with adriamycin and cytoxan followed by paclitaxel and trastuzumab, researchers said. Until now, Herceptin has been recommended mainly for women with larger tumors, or who are at greater risk of metastasis. Some of the reported side effects have included heart and lung problems and fatal infusion reactions. (afp)

Path at Sidembunut incomplete

Project contract ends, but workmanship still continues

BANGLI - Although fiscal year 2014 was over, the workmanship of path project leading to Masceti Temple through Subak Munggu at Sidembunut village, Bangli, remains unfinished. Until mid-January, the project financed by Bangli regional budget and worked on by the former Bangli legislator is still ongoing.

Based on observation on Tuesday (Jan 13), a number of workers were seen still working on the path project. Their work was installing foundation stone and covered road surface with concrete. The length of the path worked on reached approximately 20 meters. A number of workers met last Tuesday admitted that they had begun to resume the road construction since last few days. Meanwhile, the project sign board that should be installed at project location could no longer be found there. Related to the project in 2014 which was still running, the Head of Bangli Public Works, Ida Bagus Wediatmika, when contacted could not give clear explanation. Considering the Public Works handled a number of projects, he suggested Bali Post to get in touch with one of his division heads directly dealing with the project. Meanwhile, when contacted via cell phone, the Division Head of Human Settlements, Wayan Suarsana, said the project was undertaken by using regional budget 2014. However, he claimed to have forgotten the amount of budget used to finance the project. Similarly, he was not familiar with the correct total length of the road worked on. He just said that according to the project contract, it should be worked on until December 31, 2014. Then, why the project was still worked on until midJanuary? He argued that it was only repairing some incomplete parts considering the project was still in the maintenance period. However, he did not deny if the work was also carried out to increase the volume deficiency of the previous work. “Actually it has been completed, but there is a drawback. What worked on today is the drawback including its maintenance,” he said. Drawback of the volume was also recognized by Ariasa serving as the project supervisor. He admitted the project was financed with the budget worth IDR 67 million and still lacked for 25 meters of the total project. “What we are working on now is the lack of previous volume,” he said. GANDHINAGAR, India - Narendra Modi may have pledged to make India the “easiest” place to do business but experts remain skeptical about how the prime minister intends to overcome obstacles such as corruption, red tape and an arduous tax regime. Hundreds of executives gathered this week in Modi’s longtime fiefdom of Gujarat to hear him promise to transform India’s business climate, with “unlimited” reforms designed to attract foreign investment. Everyone from World Bank president Jim Yong Kim to US Secretary of State John Kerry publicly heaped praise on Modi’s efforts to kickstart economic growth since his right-wing party stormed to power at elections in May. But behind the scenes at the major “Vibrant Gujarat” summit, the mood among some was more cautious while economists rattled off a string of substantial reforms the government still needs to tackle. India currently ranks 142 out of 189 on the World Bank’s “ease of doing business survey”, behind its arch rival Pakistan, and even dropping two places on the list last year. Kerry hailed Modi as a “visionary” in his address at the summit, enthused by his government’s promises to cut a swathe through red tape and simplify a tax regime that often leaves foreign business in despair. But, speaking on the sidelines of the gathering, one of Kerry’s own officials struck a more cautious waitand-see note. “I think there are companies who are sort of watching to make sure that what’s projected actually happens,” a senior US State Department official said in the Gujarati capital Gandhinagar. Also speaking at the three-day gathering, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley defended his government’s pace of reforms so far and stressed that Modi’s pledge to make India the “easiest” place to do business was not an empty slogan. Jaitley pointed to moves to fasttrack changes to land purchases -- a major business bugbear -- and steps to introduce a national sales tax to replace myriad confusing duties imposed by state and national governments. “I see investments significantly moving up in days to come,” said Jaitley. every kind of business, from private schools to major industries, operating in India. Asia’s third largest economy has been struggling through its worst slowdown since the 1980s, with growth at around five percent, too low to help create jobs for tens of millions of young people. While some experts pointed to a need to overhaul dilapidated infrastructure including pot-holed roads and unreliable power supplies to boost business, others singled out endemic corruption. India-born economist Jagdish Bhagwati, a professor at Columbia University in New York, said the government must do more to tackle corruption among public officials that plagued the previous left-leaning Congress government’s decade in power. “They have inherited the UPA-2 (Congress coalition) government’s inactions. They (UPA-2) didn’t really do anything about corruption,” Bhagwati said in an interview with the Hindustan Times newspaper. Rindik is one of the Balinese traditional musical instruments. This musical instrument is very simple, but has a distinctive sound. Rustic, peaceful and prosperous atmosphere is depicted in the tones played. In the wedding reception, thanksgiving and other ceremonial events, rindik can become a choice of entertainment. At hotel lobby, this bamboo music is often played as a welcome music. In the performing session, rindik is usually played by three musicians. A player of lanang (female) instrument plays the selangsih tone and another plays wadon (female) instrument with a plain tone. Then, another plays a flute to give the sweet feel in every gamelan composition. To play the blades of rindik requires a good concentration because both hands should be able to play the mallet (beater) with different tempo and composition. The beat of left hand sets the tempo, while the right hand plays kotekan in accordance with the rhythm of gamelan composition played. Sometimes it can be fast and tender. Uniform of the players is not too flossy. They usually wear fabric, saput, selempot, clothes and headdress. If the performance is intended for reception or a large ceremonial event, the uniform put on by players usually arranged

beautifully like a dancer. A combination of colors and patterns has become a main thing. Sometimes, it is embellished with yellowish golden leaf. Prof. Dr. I Wayan Dibia said the traditional musical instrument was estimated to origin from pejogedan art emerging in 1940s. Pejodegan art was the development of Joged Pingitan circa 1811. After the independence period, it then developed into Joged Bumbung having full expression and spontaneity. As a popular art, continued Dibia, rindik was very appropriate to be combined with dance movements having the formality space. At the beginning, the Joged Bumbung emerged as a sensual dance, but not erotic. “Well, in the later development Joged Bumbung features erotic motion. As a result, it kindles an unfair judgment,” he said. According to Dibia, we could not blame them (the joged dancers) alone. “Probably, it indicates if people are in severe stress or it also becomes the people’s demand today,” said the lecturer in the Indonesia Institute of Arts (ISI) Denpasar seriously. Similar opinion was also revealed by I Wayan Wendra. This man having composed dozens of gamelan musical art said the birth of rindik was predicted to come from the

tingklik (bamboo blade musical instrument). Tingklik was estimated to have existed since 1930s. “The birth of rindik started when farmers were relaxing while hitting galar (bamboo mat). As sounding fun, they were then given the tone to produce very melodious sounds,” he said. The tingklik then used intact bamboo stuffed with resonance chamber to produce tender tone. Creativity of the Hindu community in Bali was high and then the rindik was combined with dance, so that it developed into jejogedan accompanying the Joged Bumbung dance. “Almost all the regions in Bali have this art. This musical instrument is very close to the life of farmers in Bali,” he said.To make rindik instrument, added Wendra, people used selected bamboo to generate a nice tone. Other than being dry, the bamboo should also have a matching thickness. “A fanatic rindik player usually makes it from dry bamboo at place, not cleared it first before dried out,” he said. According to him, every region in Bali has special day to present the offerings for the gamelan instrument. Meanwhile, each craftsman would not have different ability. “People who can make the rindik have strong auditory tone of gamelan,” he said. (kmb)

NEAK LOEUNG, Cambodia — Hun Sen, Cambodia’s tough and wily prime minister, marked 30 years in power Wednesday, one of just a handful of political strongmen worldwide who have managed to cling to their posts for three decades. Since first taking up the job of prime minister at age 33, he has consolidated power with violence and intimidation of opponents that continue to draw criticism from human rights advocates. But he can also take some credit for bringing modest economic growth and stability in a country devastated by the communist Khmer Rouge’s regime in the 1970s, which left some 1.7 million people dead from starvation, disease and executions. “Hun Sen is one of the cleverest politicians Asia has ever seen,” said Sebastian Strangio, author of a recent biography of the Cambodian leader. In a speech marking the ceremonial completion of the country’s longest, 2,200-meter (7,200-

foot) Japanese-funded bridge across the Mekong River on Wednesday, the 62-year-old Hun Sen defended his record, saying that only he was daring enough to tackle the Khmer Rouge and help bring peace to Cambodia. “If Hun Sen hadn’t been willing to enter the tigers’ den, how could we have caught the tigers?” he said. He acknowledged some shortcomings, but pleaded for observers to see the good as well as the bad in his leadership. Born to a peasant family in east-central Cambodia, Hun Sen initially joined the Khmer Rouge against a pro-American government. He defected to Vietnam in 1977, and accompanied the Vietnamese invasion that toppled his former comrades in 1979.

The timely change of sides led to his being appointed foreign minister, then prime minister of the Vietnamese-supported regime in 1985. He has never left the top post despite being forced to temporarily accept the title of “co-prime minister” after his party came in second in a 1993 U.N.-supervised election. Four years later, he deposed his coalition partner in a bloody coup. “He has brought stability and peace, but he has also brought so much inequality, corruption and frustration to millions as well,” said Ou Virak, head of Future Forum, a Cambodian think tank. 102 bodies found in Indian river thought to be water burials LUCKNOW, India — Authorities were investigating Wednesday how more than 100 bodies, many of them children, ended up floating in an offshoot of the Ganges River in northern India. Officials do not suspect a crime, and instead believe the dead were given water burials. It is Indian custom not to cremate unwed girls, and many poor people cannot afford cremation. The 102 bodies found floating near the village of Pariyar in the most populous state of Uttar Pradesh were too badly decomposed for autopsies or identification, District Magistrate Saumya Agarwal said. DNA testing is being done to determine where the bodies might have come from. “Once we will complete all the legal formalities, these bodies will be buried to avoid spread of diseases,” Sub-Divisional Magistrate

Saryua Shukla said. Officials were questioning how so many bodies could be discovered at the same time. While it is illegal to dispose of the dead in rivers, some practicing Hindus believe that giving an unwed girl a water burial will ensure she is born again into the family. Poverty also drives people to conduct water burials to avoid the cost of cremation, which at a minimum of about $40 is far above a poor person’s monthly wage. Villagers first noticed the bodies on Tuesday, when many had become stuck on a river bank with dogs and vultures circling the area. The narrow river breaks off from the Ganges just before passing Pariyar, about 28 kilometers (17 miles) from the state capital of Lucknow. “It seems these were in water for very long,” police officer Ram Chander Sahu said. Italy’s president quits as promised; scramble’s on for next ROME — Italy’s President Giorgio Napolitano has resigned as promised, less than two years after accepting an unprecedented second term as head of state because squabbling lawmakers couldn’t agree on a successor. The Quirinal presidential palace said Napolitano, who turns 90 this year, signed his formal resignation late Wednesday morning. Napolitano reluctantly agreed in spring 2013 to stay on for a second term when lawmakers

repeatedly failed to elect his successor. He made clear then because of age, he wouldn’t serve the entire new term. In recent weeks he repeatedly indicated he would step down in mid-January. Now Parliament and special regional electors must hold a special voting session in 15 days to pick a new president. Israeli students go on strike after field trips canceled JERUSALEM — Israel’s half a million high school students are staying home for three days to protest cancelled field trips, the first time the country’s teenagers are playing hooky nationwide. Education Ministry spokeswoman Hagit Cohen said the strike was in protest against a decision by an organization of Israeli teachers some weeks ago to stop accompanying students on field trips. The organization decided teachers would no longer escort students

unless they have legal guarantees they would not be sued by the parents should something happen to students during the trips. Cohen says the issue stemmed from a drowning incident during a school trip. The National Student Council declared the strike Wednesday, saying it will involve all high school students. INDONESIA Divers investigate object thought to be AirAsia jet body PANGKALAN BUN - Indonesian divers on Wednesday investigated an object believed to be the main body of the crashed AirAsia jet and the resting place of most of the victims, after the discovery of the plane’s black boxes raised hopes of determining why it went down. Flight QZ8501 crashed in the Java Sea on December 28 in stormy weather during a short, routine flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore. There were 162 people on board. Both black boxes -- the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder -- were recovered this week after a frustrating, lengthy search often hampered by bad weather. Investigators have begun downloading the data and hope it will provide them with vital clues as to what caused the accident. Scores of divers on Wednesday shifted their focus to investigating an object thought to the jet’s fuselage, the main body of the plane, which was earlier spotted on sonar scans and is lying about two miles (three kilometres) from where the tail was found. Finding the fuselage of the Airbus 320200 is seen as vital, as most of the victims are believed to be still trapped inside. Just 48 bodies have so far been recovered. Search and rescue agency official S.B. Supriyadi said if the object, which is lying about 30 metres (100 feet) under

water, turned out to be the fuselage, divers would examine how it could be raised from the water. “If it is not too heavy, we may lift the whole piece and evacuate the victims,” Supriyadi, who is coordinating what has been a huge, international search, told AFP. “If it’s too heavy, we may then swim into the fuselage and pull out the bodies one by one before lifting it.” But he cautioned it would be a complex operation that could take several days. “Retrieving the main part of the body poses a different challenge to retrieving the black boxes. We are working with larger plane parts and then there’s a possibility of victims trapped inside,” he said. The so-called black boxes -- which are actually orange in colour -- have been flown to Jakarta, where Indonesia’s National Transport Safety Committee is leading a probe into the accident, helped by experts from countries including France and the United States. The country’s meteorological agency has said bad weather may have caused the crash but only the black boxes will be able

to provide definitive answers. Investigators have started retrieving data from the recorders and converting it into a usable format, which will take around a week, before the lengthy analysis process can begin, committee head Tatang Kurniadi told AFP. The flight data recorder holds a wealth of information about every major part of the plane, with details such as the jet’s speed and the direction it was heading in, while the cockpit voice recorder stores radio transmissions and sounds in the cockpit. Divers on Tuesday also spotted what they believe is one of the plane’s engines, which could provide further clues about what caused the accident. In his last communication, the plane’s experienced pilot said he wanted to change course to avoid the storm. Then all contact was lost, about 40 minutes after take-off. All but seven of those on board the flight were Indonesian. The foreign nationals were from South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Britain and France. (afp)

President to issue instruction on illegal fishing JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will soon issue a presidential instruction (Inpres) to crackdown on illegal fishing activities in Indonesian waters, according to Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti. “The president will soon issue the Inpres on the management of Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing,” Minister Pudjiastuti stated during a press conference at the Mina Bahari-I building of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries on Wednesday. Pujiastuti admitted to having urged President Jokowi to issue the Inpres, so that Indonesia can boost its efforts to consistently safeguard its territorial waters. She noted that with the issuance of the Inpres, the fight against illegal fishing could be carried out continuously. According to her, the Inpres is expected to impact the prices and supply of fish at various markets in Indonesia. She said some indicators showed that curbing illegal fishing had led to a significant increase in fish catch in numerous regions such as Muncar in East Java, Bali, and Aceh. The minister has noted that illegal fishing by foreign vessels had depleted Indonesia’s marine and fisheries resources, particularly in certain areas where fish stocks are now low. To ensure that Indonesia does not run out of maritime and fisheries resources, she emphasized that this situation should not persist. Referring to the sinking of foreign vessels found poaching fish in Indonesian waters, the minister clarified that it had nothing to do with legal violations and bilateral relations with other countries. She affirmed that it constituted the implementation of the rights and obligations of a law-abiding country. “This is not an issue between countries but one between a country and a thief infiltrating Indonesian sovereign waters,” Pudjiastuti explained. WASHINGTON — Washington finally broke a decade-long losing run against San Antonio by beating the Spurs 101-93 on Tuesday, giving the Wizards the second best record in the NBA Eastern Conference. A staff member found the stone base of the Jules Rimet trophy last month in basement storage at FIFA headquarters, museum creative director David Ausseil said Tuesday. “It’s like finding an Egyptian mummy,” Ausseil told The Associated Press. “You can’t put a price tag on it because it’s family jewels.” The base is a 10-cen-

timeter (4-inch) tall, octagonal piece of blue semi-precious lapis lazuli stone, Ausseil said. It carries the names of the first four World Cup winners: Uruguay and Italy each won twice between 1930 and 1950. Iran condemns new Charlie Hebdo issue as ‘provocative’

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran has condemned Charlie Hebdo’s new issue as “provocative” and says the new cartoon by the weekly is an insult to Islam and the Prophet Muhammad.

Foreign ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham says that Wednesday’s publication of the paper featuring another caricature of the prophet “provokes the sentiments

of Muslims the world over.” Iran has strongly condemned the deadly assault by two masked gunmen that killed 12 people last week, including much of the

weekly’s editorial staff and two police officers. Those who survived published an issue with a print run of 3 million — more than 50 times the usual circulation.

Afkham says last week’s attack against the French satirical weekly was against Islam’s teaching. But, she says, the latest cartoon is also insulting to the religion. (ap)
