Hollywood preps for ‘Star Wars’ world premiere

LOS ANGELES — Hollywood is preparing for what could be the largest movie premiere in its history on Monday night when the hugely anticipated “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is screened for VIP audiences in three separate theaters amid tight security. At one of the Hollywood Boulevard location — the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre, where the first “Star Wars” premiered in 1977 — fans are already camped out this weekend, eagerly awaiting their turn when the film opens for regular folks next Friday. One fan, Lavonne Dominguez, wasn’t interested in simply buying a ticket online to see the movie in her local movie theater. She and several friends who drove up from Orange County wanted an out-of-this-world experience. “I need to see it in an epic place with people who are just as excited about ‘Star Wars’ as me,” said Dominguez, 32, who was among about 150 devotees in line at the Chinese on Friday, occasionally ducking under awnings to avoid a passing shower.

Several fans began holding court outside the theatre last weekend. Many of them previously lined up at the same location to be among the first to see the “Star Wars” prequel films, beginning in 1999. This time, the theater operator is allowing them to camp out on top of the theater’s famous celebrity handand footprints, instead of along the sidewalk out front. The fans must log at least 24 hours in line to gain entry to the theater’s first public showing of the film, but those who spend more time in line will earn preferential seat selection. “If I didn’t have to go to work, I probably would be here the whole time,” said Dominguez. It’s unclear just where the group will be when Lucasfilm’s latest “Star Wars” installment has its worldwide

premiere on Monday night. The star-studded event is expected to be one of the largest — and most secretive — Hollywood premieres ever. On Friday, dozens of workers were busily erecting a mammoth opaque tent lining four blocks of Hollywood oulevard. Inside the partially built structure, curious tourists snapped photos of lighting equipment while security personnel drove around in carts with “The Force Awakens” logo on them. Lucasfilm-owner Disney declined to comment or provide details about the premiere, but it’s expected to take over the TCL Chinese Theatre, as well as the nearby El Capitan Theatre and the adjacent Dolby Theatre, home of the Oscars. An invitation sent to members of the media Friday afternoon requested that they withhold from spoiling the film after seeing it for the first time Monday night and dress in “’Star Wars’” chic” attire to the event. TRADITIONAL markets are still a source of comfort for consumers looking to supply themselves with their daily necessities such as food and other household items. This comfort however is sometimes put in jeopardy when the condition of the location and general sanitation are left unattended. Many of the traditional markets run by the government of Bangli bear witness to the lack of comfort that can be experienced when the environment of markets is not taken care of. Kidul Market for example is currently in a state that is not so different than a garbage dump (TPA). Kidul market is located in the town of Bangli, just south of Denpasar Palace, and can be reached by taking Jalan Merdeka from Gianyar. Upon arriving at this market, the first sign of chaos is the parking area that is completely disorganized with merchants spilling out in a haphazard manner. The entrance way into the market is even worse with garbage strewn about and vendors apparently oblivious to the unpleasant atmosphere. In the eastern part of the market, trash cans have been set up, but these are apparently seldom used, as trash is piled up randomly. If the condition of this an other traditional markets is not dramatically improved, compet-

ing against modern markets will remain a fantasy. Head of the Bangli Urban Planning Agency, Ida Ayu Yudi Sutha, said that her agency has cooperated with the market three times to haul away piles of garbage, and that the merchants have been given guidance about how to maintain the sanction of the market. Unfortunately, so far people’s behaviour has not changed. “We have given them coaching. But they seem unable to change,” she said. Sutha also explained that the Industry and Trade Agency has been cooperating with the market officers so that the problem of waste management can be addressed properly. According to Sutha, the merchants need to be given more guidance about how to maintain sanitation at the market. Previously, the poor sanitation at Kidul Market was blamed for the district of Bangli’s failure to win the Adupura Trophy. (sos)

THE GIANYAR House of Representatives’ recommendation to address the issue of the increase in the number of big chain stores is finally getting the attention of the government. The government of Gianyar plans to suspend the issuance of permits for big chain stores in 2016.

The government of Gianyar plans to suspend the issuance of permits for big chain stores in 2016. There are currently a total of 115 modern chain stores in Gianyar.

However, the moratorium will only be applied in certain areas. Head of the Gianyar Industry and Trade Agency, I Wayan Suamba, said that a regent regulation has in fact already set forth guidelines concerning the establishment of such businesses in Ginayar with quotas set for each subdistrict. There are currently a total of 115 modern chain stores in Gianyar. The quotas set for each subdistrict are determined based on such factors as the population of the subdistrict, per capita income, and a number of other aspects. “So, it is different in each subdistrict. For example Ubud and Payangan, clearly have different needs,” he said. Calling for a moratorium is a tricky matter, explained Suamba, because basically, according to a presidential instruction, the government is not allowed to to restrict the establishment of ‘modern stores’. “The presidential instruction hints that we cannot limit the number of stores, we can only regulate the matter,” he said. Nevertheless, because so many such stores have been popping up there is clearly a need to give attention to the situation. Suamba added that the regent

of Gianyar has commissioned a discussion on the matter of modern chain stores and the empowerment of traditional markets. Altough he did not explain in detail, Sumaba did say that the moratorium will not be applied across the board but rather will be applied in subdistricts who have exceeded their quota of modern chain stores. In addition, traditional markets will be empowered so that they can compete with the modern chain stores. The head if the Gianyar Industry and Trade Agency added that the issue of the proliferation of modern chain stores requires that the general public be educated about how to provide practical services that are increasing in demand by our communities. A few communities have already started to make their shops more attractive and are giving more attention to sanitation and hygiene. “If the store is dirty and messy, this will have a negative impact on sales, because today’s consumers demand cleanliness. Shop owners need to become aware of these demands and do what is needed to take advantage of existing opportunities,” said Suamba. (kmb25)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BDF encourages cooperation to create good governance

The elephants were friendly, hungry and eager to interact. For the humans, there was a lunch of rice, vegetables, meat and iced coffee. Then an Englishspeaking Bunong guide led on an easy trek through the lush jungles as we headed to a chilly watering hole to wash one of the creatures. More photo opportunity than actual cleansing, the elephant seemed to enjoy getting his back scratched and didn’t mind the picture-taking. (ap)

“There should be cooperation between governments and people to develop democratization, and the BDF plays an important role in exchanging experiences in applying practical democracy and cooperation,” Indonesian Deputy Foreign Minister A.M. Fachir stated in his closing address at the BDF at Nusa Dua, Bali, on Friday. During the two-day meeting attended by representatives from 89 participating countries and three international organizations, Fachir highlighted the importance of three issues that are relevant to the theme of the forum “Democracy and Effective Public Governance.” Firstly, good governance needs sustainable investment in human resources to implement policies and institutional reforms, he noted. Secondly, governments need to adopt an open approach and cooperate with various stakeholders to improve public governance. Thirdly, the media and civil society must increase their role as government partners by assisting the latter in supervision efforts. “Our public interest in creating good governance must at least cover transparency and accountability, while at the same time increasing public participation,” he affirmed. In his closing statement, Fachir called for active participation of various countries and organizations to cooperate with the Institute for Peace and Democracy (IPD) as the executive body of the BDF. Since early this year, the IPD has carried out 13 concrete activities to promote democracy including those in Egypt, Fiji, Myanmar, Tunisia, Libya, Palestine, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. (ant)

Infrastructure bank needs three guarantees

NUSA DUA - The government is urged to give a guarantee in the form of protection for Indonesian Infrastructure Bank from being declared bankrupt unless it is ruled by the law. Chief Executive of PT. Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (SMI), a state owned company to be the embryo of the Indonesian Banking Development Agency (LPPI), Emma Sri Martini said the protection from the bankruptcy pressure is important for the operational sustainability and credibility of the LPPI. LPPI, expected to be opera-

tional in 2017, has a function to serve as an infrastructure bank in Indonesia. “That (the guarantee) will increase the level of convenience of rating agencies to give good rating for LPPI,” Emma said on Friday. Currently, the finance ministry, SMI and the Commission XI of the Parliament are discussing a draft law on LPPI. With good rating from international rating agencies, LPPI financing with bonds would be given good price, Emma said. Emma raised the proposal in a

“bankruptcy remote” scheme. She plans to come up with two other proposals to the Working Committee for LPPI Draft Law at the Parliament. The second guarantee to be proposed by Emma is accommodation of capital for LPPI in the state budget. As for capital guarantee, the stipulation could be used as adopted for the Indonesia Export Financing Agency (LPEI), she said. “In the event of the equity capital of LPEI is less than Rp4 trillion, the government is required to inject more fund. That is a guarantee. LPPI

asks for the same treatment with different parameters,” she said. The third guarantee is a tax incentive for LPPI to reduce the cost of fund, Emma said, adding tax incentive could be given for instrument issued by LPPI when seeking fund in financial market. She said tax incentive could also be given in the form of corporate income tax exemption or cut. “The government, therefore, does not have to inject fund through capital participation (PMN) to LPPI,” she added. transformation into LPPI is continuing. In 2016, SMI hopes to increase its financing commitments to Rp24 trillion cumulatively. She said SMI is seeking an additional fund of Rp14.5 trillion to increase in financing capacity in 2016. The additional fund could be through issuance of mid term bonds --Medium Term Notes -MTN, and loans from banks. In 2016, SMI sets a target for funding commitment at Rp12 trillion for infrastructure projects, which are dominated by the electricity, transport, oil and gas sectors. (ant)

Indonesia to host international conference on Jerusalem

NUSA DUA - Indonesia will host a two-day international conference on Jerusalem held by the United Nation Committee on Palestine (CEIRPP) to start on Monday in Jakarta. The delegates will discuss the status of Jerusalem and cooperation to resolve the Palestinian conflicts, Multilateral Director General at the Foreign Ministry Hasan Kleib said on Friday.

Hasan said Jerusalem is a complicated, sensitive and difficult issue as it is recognized as a capital city by both Palestine and Israel. It is also a holy city for both Islam, Christians and Jews, that it often triggers religious conflicts, he said. “While awaiting decision on the status of Jerusalem, what we need to think over is how to live peacefully side by side

Two teams from Ketapang and Gilimanuk were deployed to check 15 vessels each - primarily those vessels that serve passengers. Harbor unit team (UPP) checked the vessel engines, as well as the completeness of safety devices such as life jackets, lifeboats, navigation tools, and fire extinguishers. Chief of the UPP Gilimanuk, Nyoman Wirawan Daelon, said that based on Shipping Notification No.182 dated November 30, 2015, the UPP is monitoring safety and conducting vessel seaworthiness inspections ahead of Christmas and New Year. In addition to inspecting the safety of the vessels, they are also checking shipping documents. Daelon added that only after a vessel has been declared to be in compliance with the requirements for seaworthiness, will they be allowed to serve the crossing of the Bali straight. Any vessel found to be in violation of these requirements will not be allowed to do so. According to Daelon, safety is the prime requirement for shipping services and added that even though the UPP authorities know that that the vessels that serve this crossing are generally fully sea-worthy, it is essential to conduct regular inspection to ensure passenger safety. Archeological Museum of Gilimanuk renovated but funding still needed

NEGARA - The Gilimanuk Archaeological Museum was recently renovated and a number of fossils and other archaeological findings are stored in the three-story building. The museum looks much cleaner than before with both the roof and the floor having been replaced, and visitors have already started coming to the see the wonders stored here. However, the new building in front of the main museum has yet to be worked on due to lack of budget and so no new object have been put on display yet.

Saudi women vote for the first time, testing boundaries

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Women across Saudi Arabia marked a historic milestone on Saturday, both voting and running as candidates in government elections for the first time, but just outside polling stations they waited for male drivers — a reminder of the limitations still firmly in place. The landmark election for local council seats was not expected to immediately advance the status of women in Saudi Arabia, who are still not permitted to drive, but it seen as a chance for them to make their voices heard as citizens. “We are making history. I just made history,” said candidate Karima Bokhary, 50, after casting her ballot at a polling station in the capital Riyadh. Bokhary was one of 979 women candidates vying for a seat on the country’s municipal councils, the only government body in which Saudi citizens can elect their representatives. An additional 5,968 male candidates were running in the election. There is no quota on the number of female council members. Results were expected to be reported on Sunday. More than 130,000 women registered to vote, compared to 1.35 million men. The General Election Commission estimated there are at least 5 million eligible voters out of a population of 20 million, but the

figure could be much higher. At a polling center in Riyadh, Shara Al-Qahtani, a 50-year-old mother of eight, wearing a loose black dress known as an abaya that all women must wear in public and a traditional veil covering her face and hair, said women being allowed to vote “is good for people and good for society ... Women are partners of men.” Najla Khaled, a 24 year-old English literature major, described voting “as a huge step for women in Saudi.” Though women make up just 10 percent of registered voters, the right to simply cast a ballot sends a wider message to society, she said. “If you look back at the history of women (in Islam), there are so many strong women,” she said. “The Prophet (Muhammad) worked for his wife Khadija. AUSTIN, Texas — About a dozen gun rights activists staged a mock mass shooting Saturday near the University of Texas, only to be outnumbered by counter-demonstrators who waved sex toys and tried to drown them out with chants. The groups Come and Take It Texas and Don’tcomply.com initially wanted to hold their event on campus but were told by school officials they would be charged with criminal trespassing. Several members openly carried real assault-style rifles. The groups then slipped away to another location and “shot” six people with cardboard guns. Victims were outlined with chalk to show where they fell. After publicizing their event for nearly a week, organizers said they purposely avoided the crowds and media gathered to cover the event to prove that a shooter can strike anywhere and anytime. “In real (shooting) events like this, you don’t know when they’re going to happen, you don’t know where they’re going to happen ... we purposely did it that way,” said Jason Orsek, vice president of both gun groups. The campus is home to one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history. Charles Whitman killed 16 people in 1966, shooting dozens of people from a perch atop the central clock tower. “It’s tasteless,” Robert Oxford, a graduate student and member of the group Gun-Free UT, said of the mock mass shooting. Fed expected to hike rates amid nagging worries

WASHINGTON - After a long buildup that stirred waves of turbulence in global markets, the Federal Reserve finally is expected to end its seven-year crisis stance with an interest rate increase on Wednesday. Most bets are that the Fed will increase the benchmark federal funds rate for the first time in nearly a decade, signaling confidence in US economic growth even as the rest of the world sags. A move has been well-flagged for months now by Fed Chair Janet Yellen and others on her team. About 97 percent of economists surveyed by the Wall Street Journal expect the increase.

Yellen made clear at the beginning of this month that she believes that longstanding arguments against an increase -- inflation is absent and the jobs market still shows weakness -- will dissolve through next year. “I anticipate continued economic growth at a moderate pace that will be sufficient to generate additional increases in employment, further reductions in the remaining margins of labor market slack, and a

rise in inflation to our two percent objective,” she said in a December 2 speech. If the Fed waits too long, she added pointedly, “we would likely end up having to tighten policy relatively abruptly to keep the economy from significantly overshooting both of our goals.” That speech “was really intended to tell the market that, yes, they are planning to raise rates at the next meeting,” said Stephen Oliner of the American Enterprise Institute. An American drowns in swimming pool

GIANYAR - An American tourist was found floating dead in the pool of a villa belonging to I Wayan Warsa in Sala hamlet, Pejeng, Tampaksiring, on Friday morning (Dec. 11). Chief of Dalem Setra Batununggul customary village, I Dewa Ketut Tayanegara, when met at the local Pura Dalem on Friday (Dec. 11) said that the Tawur Gentuh ritual was commenced with bathara tirta turun kabeh from Sad Kahyangan Nusa Penida and 18 trinity temples. “This ritual is held every year having been inherited from the ancestors and is meant to invoke God so that this extreme weather condition can quickly go by. People are waiting anxiously for the rain to cool down the temperature,” said Dewa Tayanegara. Tayanegara explained that the peak of the ritual took place on Thursday, and that the closing was held on Sunday (Dec. 13). The ritual is also intended to maintain the harmony of nature between the microcosm and macrocosm so that it can provide a calm atmosphere for the community and the universe,” he added. French far right faces test in regional election runoff

PARIS — Marine Le Pen’s anti-immigration National Front was the frontrunner heading into the decisive second round of French regional elections Sunday, and now it’s up to voters whether to hand the once-pariah party an unprecedented political victory. Le Pen is riding high after extremist attacks and Europe’s migrant crisis, and the party came out on top in six of France’s 13 newly drawn regions a week ago. But polls suggest it may fail to translate that into wins in the second round. The once-powerful Socialist Party, which currently controls all but one of France’s regions, came in a poor third place in the first round and pulled out of key races in hopes of keeping the National Front from gaining power. Former President Nicolas Sarkozy’s party came in a strong second, and looks set to make substantial gains in Sunday’s runoff. Winning control of any region would be unprecedented and a big

boost for the National Front — and especially for Le Pen’s hopes for the presidency in 2017. German city of Leipzig earlier in the day. Police said Sunday they temporarily detained 23 people after the leftist rioters threw stones at police, erected street blocks and burned down garbage cans. Head of the Information and Data Center and Public Relations Service of BNPB Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the contingency plan includes preparing evacuation camps and personnel to help residents in case of eruption. The contingency plan also involves many parties including military personnel, police officers and agencies in the district, he said. Subhan called on the local people and tourists not to carry out activities within a radius of 2.5 km for fear that thick sulfuric ash may disrupt respiratory system and minor eruption may suddenly occur in the crater. BEKASI - Sifting through a mountain of garbage with her bare hands, a thick cloth wrapped around her face to keep out the stench, Patimah recalled her early days scavenging at a dump on the outskirts of the Indonesian capital the size of 120 football fields. “I vomited back then,” she told AFP while wading through kneedeep waste, swatting away flies as she hunted for plastic bottles amid food scraps and soiled clothing. But now Patimah, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, said the smell no longer bothers her: “I am used to it.” The same cannot be said for people living nearby, who are increasingly angry at the odours

Virtually all rubbish from Jakarta –- a sprawling city of about 10 million with a booming middle class –- is dumped an hour’s drive away at Bantar Gebang, in the city of Bekasi, where towering mountains of trash have risen skyward as the capital grows bigger and wealthier. The absence of a citywide recycling scheme, and limited public awareness of “going green”, means the tip –- already one of the world’s largest –- is growing by an estimated 6,500 tonnes per day.

The job of sorting through the mountains of untreated waste falls to a 6,000-strong army of trash pickers, including many young children, who dodge heavy machinery and exposure to disease to eke out a living from the city’s filth. BARCELONA — Barcelona missed a chance to temporarily increase its Spanish league lead when it conceded two late goals and drew with Deportivo La Coruna 2-2 at home on Saturday. Lionel Messi opened the scoring with a curling free kick before halftime, and set up Ivan Rakitic’s powerful strike from outside the area after an hour. Then Deportivo striker Lucas Perez scored, and set up the equalizer by Alex Bergantinos after a late counterattack to shock the crowd at the Camp Nou. The result extended Barcelona’s winless streak to three matches, and gave rivals Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid - which play their games on Sunday - precious chances to make up ground in the 15th round. Barcelona has a three-point lead over Atletico Madrid, which plays Athletic Bilbao. Real Madrid, which plays at fifth-place Villarreal, was five points behind Barcelona. Deportivo, unbeaten in six games and with only one away loss this season, was sixth. “We had everything under control until the 30-minute mark of the second half,” Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said. “Deportivo had a brave strategy, and it worked

out for them. It isn’t the result that we deserved but it shows that we have to be plugged in for all 90 minutes.” It was Barcelona’s last game before traveling to Japan for the Club World Cup.
