The Public Works Ministry pushed to develop biggest traditional house design in every part of Indonesia after a research done by the Ministry’s Housing Research Team on earthquake resistant traditional houses as stated by the Ministry’s Expert Staff on Social Culture Section and Public Contribution, Graita Sutadi, at Nusa Dua Bali last Saturday (12/11). Graita mentioned that the Ministry is trying to maximise the development of traditional houses including its construction. The Ministry will develop the construction plan by balancing it with local skills, local culture approach, local architecture and using local materials yet applied in modern technology by meaning having the house healthy, suitable to live in and comprehensive with its ecology
and cultural area. The technology and building technique has to look over the geography and climate of the place. Head of Traditional Housing Technology Board (BPTPT) Denpasar, Iwan Suprijanto, there is around 300 traditional houses types in Indonesia that has been researched and they are proven resists on earthquake. This shows that traditional houses are able to protect the people more on
earthquakes, saves cost on materials and can be covered by anyone compared to some modern houses now are not earthquake resistance. Flooding disaster striking Denpasar, Tuesday night (Nov 8), did not only claim casualties. But, the disaster at the beginning of rainy season this year also resulted in quite large material losses. At least, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Denpasar estimated the total loss reached IDR 5,276,783,500. The Head of Denpasar Regional Disaster Management Agency, Made Sudhana Satrigraha accompanied by Spokesperson of Denpasar Municipality, Dewa Gede Rai, said on Friday (Nov 11) that such losses happened because many public facilities and infrastructure were damaged in Denpasar. “It has been calculated based on the damaged buildings,� he said. He mentioned that one of the damaged infrastructures in Denpasar was the Mandala Wangi Bridge, connecting the
Jalan Pulau Biak - Jalan Nusa Kambangan. The bridge established in 1993 under cooperation of the Armed Forces and community was unable to hold the strong water of Badung River, so the end of the bridge was eroded and broke up. Other than a broken bridge, six elementary school buildings in Denpasar City were also inundated by water and some walls collapsed. Ammonia poisoning, nine people should be rushed to Sanglah Hospital The leaking of ice factory on Jalan Pidada Ubung generating ammonia gas on Friday (Nov 11) resulted in an aftermath. Nine people living around the factory and those who were at the scene during the incident of ammonia gas leakage should be rushed to Sanglah Hospital at 9:00 p.m. Friday (Nov11) as complained about dizziness and nausea after inhaling the gas. Based on the data, the nine victims consisting of Hartono, 31, I Gusti Ketut, 47, Sevrianus Jave, 20, Joko Wahyudi, 47 and Yatim, 36, were recorded as the residents of Jalan Pidada V Ubung. Meanwhile, the other victims named Ketut Muliarta, 28, a resident of Jalan Gunung Soputan, Bakti, 26, Paula Yusuf, 29, a resident of Jalan Kartini and Wayan Juliantara, 27, a resident
of Tiying Tali Hamlet, Abang, Karangasem. The nine victims were coming in a weak condition as well as complained of dizziness and nausea. HONOLULU - Catastrophic floods may cut Thailand’s 2011 growth prospects by more than half and require a cut in interest rates to help restore growth, the country’s deputy prime minister said on Saturday. Kittirat Na Ranong, who is also commerce minister, said Bangkok has yet to make a full tally of the damage from Thailand’s worst floods in half a century “It’s still not over, but we had expected that GDP growth this year could reach as high as 4.5 percent. In my opinion we perhaps will have to shave off some 2.5 to 3 percent for economic activities forgone,” he told Reuters. The deluge has killed more than 500 people and affected about 2 million since late July, with tens of thousands relocated or sheltering in evacuation centers after their homes and businesses were engulfed by water. “It’s a very painful process, and we have seen the water creeping down, hitting city after city, factory after factory, and flooding
farmlands,” Kittirat said in an interview on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Hawaii. The deputy premier is filling in at the annual APEC leaders summit for Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who stayed home to deal with the flooding. The economic damage from the flooding will not be confined to Thailand because “some (Thai) factories produce parts or materials for the global supply chain,” he said. Thailand, Southeast Asia’s second biggest economy, is a major center for multinational firms manufacturing cars, auto parts and electronics. Kittirat said conditions were ripe for an interest rate cut to help the economy recover from the flooding. “Even before the flood, I kept saying the interest rate of Thailand was unnecessarily high,” he said, adding that authority over monetary policy was in the hands of the Thai central bank. “Now with the flood, I have all the more reason to believe that the interest rate in Thailand has got to come down,” said Kittirat.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Indonesia miners fight for a bigger slice of pie Agence France-Presse
TIMIKA - After more than a decade of hard work and long hours driving a truck through the mountains of Indonesia’s remote Papua province for US mining giant Freeport McMoRan, Nus Magay refuses to work for anything less than a hefty raise. Since mid-September the 35year-old has taken part in an angry strike -- which last month turned deadly after clashes with police -- together with about one-third of Freeport’s 23,000 workers. “I’m angry. I work so hard but I never got a pay increase or a promotion in all these years,” Magay told AFP, while seated on a tattered rug in the otherwise bare living room of his modest wooden house. Magay and his colleagues, mostly native Papuans, have watched Freeport’s US owners reap the riches of the Grasberg mine, one of the largest retrievable gold and copper reserves in the world. Last year Freeport reported sales revenues of more than $5 billion from Grasberg. Now, the workers are demanding a bigger slice of what they see as their pie. “Aren’t we working for a worldclass mining company? Why are we paid so little -- much less than Freeport workers in other countries?” Magay asked. The miners claim they are the poorest-paid among Freeport’s employees worldwide, including those in Africa and South America. Some complain that they do the hardest physical work at Grasberg for a basic salary of around $400 a month. But after regular bonuses, Magay said he receives close to $900 a month. That is well above Indonesia’s monthly per capita income of
about $350, but the striking miners complain it is not enough to live on in the remote, pricey mining compound in the Mimika district 4,000 kilometres (2,500 miles) from the central government in Jakarta. Because of poor infrastructure in Papua province the prices for goods consumed by a slowly modernising region are often much higher than in other parts of the country, according to executive director of Indonesia’s Human Rights Working Group Rafendi Djamin. “Papuans can still get their traditional staples, like sweet potatoes, very cheaply. But they are starting to consume rice and alcohol like the rest of Indonesia, and that can be very expensive,” Djamin said. “You can live a much better life in Jakarta on a smaller income because you have cheap options.” The workers say that even though they are paid above the average wage, their jobs in the mines and on narrow roads high in the foggy mountains are dangerous and warrant higher pay. “After paying for food and other household expenses, I have nothing left. I can’t afford to go to the hospital,” Magay said, complaining of gout and rubbing balm on his knees and elbows. “Sitting in a truck all day in the cold only makes the gout worse,” he said, referring to the low temperatures that persist in the mountains year-round.

JAKARTA - The Bakrie Group, one of Indonesia’s biggest conglomerates, has once again emerged from a debt crisis by selling off some of its assets, giving away half its stake in coal venture Bumi Plc to fellow miner Borneo Lumbung Energi . The group, founded in 1942 by Sumatran businessman Achmad Bakrie to trade local commodities such as cocoa and coffee, is known for acquisitions funded through debt that are linked to shares in its firms -- a strategy that backfires when global financial crises hit equity and debt markets. This month’s deal to help refinance $1.35 billion of debt to avoid a default follows a similar scenario in 1998, when like many local firms it suffered a $1.2 billion default during the Asian financial crisis. After the collapse of the group’s
Bank Nusa Nasional, and after years of negotiations with the government and lenders, in 2001, it gave lenders equity in its firms including the majority of its stake in an oil palm firm, Bakrie Sumatera Plantations . Only months afterwards, the group made its first acquisition in coal mining with the purchase of an 80 percent stake worth $140 million in PT Arutmin Indonesia, owned by BHP Billiton. The assets were put into its new coal firm, PT Bumi Resources . In 2003, the Bakrie Group made another major acquisition when it bought 100 percent of Indonesia’s biggest and most prized coal mining asset, PT Kaltim Prima Coal, for a cheap $500 million from oil giant BP Plc and global miner Rio Tinto , who had to divest because of Indonesian government rules. The deal, which made the group
a global player in coal, was financed with just $25 million in cash. The rest came in the form of a $400 million loan from its long-time banker Credit Suisse and another $75 million from commodity trader Glencore in exchange for coal marketing rights. By 2004, the group bought back Bakrie Sumatera. “It’s business as usual for us. We grow our business through debt, expanding it, creating more value from it, paying our debt and then expanding again via debt...There’s nothing wrong with that,” said a source close to the group’s thinking, referring to the latest deal. Although Indonesia has bigger family groups such as the Sinar Mas Group and the Salim Group, the Bakries are arguably the most powerful. Family patriarch Aburizal Bakrie is the chairman of Indonesia’s biggest political party Golkar,
the dominant group under former autocratic leader Suharto from the 1960s to the late 1990s. Having political clout is a significant advantage in a country such as Indonesia, where investors often face tortuous bureaucracy and government policy flip-flops. Aburizal Bakrie, a likely candidate for presidential elections in 2014, is also a former chairman of the nation’s biggest business lobby group Kadin, now headed by his friend Suryo Sulisto, president commissioner of the group’s Bumi Resources. Bumi Resources’ aggressive debt-fueled acquisitions led the group to have to sell off a 30 percent stake in KPC and Arutmin, worth $1.3 billion, to India’s Tata Power in 2007, to partly pay off the debt. The group, now led by Achmad Bakrie’s second son Nirwan, found itself in yet another crisis in 2008 af-
ter Lehman Brothers collapsed, leaving it facing a margin call on $1.2 billion of short-term debt because of a slide in group firm shares. It had to sell stakes in firms including in property, telecoms, plantations and its prized asset Bumi -- but retained control of all the assets. It had buy-back clauses in most of the complex deals with lenders and investors. Within months of settling these debts, in December 2008 Bumi Resources again bought two coal miners and a mining contractor for over $600 million -- sparking a probe from Indonesia’s capital markets regulator to check on the deal. The group later financed the deal and paid off other debts by getting a loan in 2009 from Chinese sovereign wealth fund CIC for $1.9 billion, debt which is due from 2013. The Bakries are now in talks with CIC to start paying this off.

DENPASAR - Indonesian prosecutors Friday recommended a three-month jail sentence for an Australian teenage boy charged with drug possession on the resort island of Bali. The 14-year-old boy was facing a maximum sentence of six years’ imprisonment after being caught in Bali last month with nearly seven grams of marijuana while on holiday with his parents. “We demand the defendant spend three months in prison, less
than the usual sentence time. We have taken into consideration that he is a child and that his behaviour can change,” prosecutor I Gusti Putu Gede Atmaja said after the closed-door hearing. Under articles 127 and 128 of Indonesia’s narcotics law, if the boy as a minor has a documented history of drug use, he could escape a prison term altogether and undergo rehabilitation instead. “We have asked for the boy to be excused under article 127 and 128, all our evidence and witnesses support that. We hope the
judge will rule fairly,” the boy’s lawyer Muhammad Rifan said. The defence has provided the court with a letter from an Australian doctor describing the boy as a drug user, and a local psychologist who has examined the boy since he was arrested more than a month ago supported the argument. The boy has been detained since October 4, when police arrested him in the tourist district of Kuta. T h e j u d g e ’s v e r d i c t i s scheduled for November 25, Rifan said.

Season inside and outside with salt. Combine all other ingredients, except turmeric water, and mix thoroughly. Fill inside of suckling with mixture, close belly with string or thin satay skewer. Rub the outside of the pig with turmeric water until the skin is shiny yellow. Place suckling pig on roasting rack and roast in hot oven (220°C / 425°F) for approximately 1 hour. Kirsten Dunst rises out of “Melancholia” Reuters
LOS ANGELES - Kirsten Dunst steps out of her comfort zone and deep into a paralyzing depression in her latest film “Melancholia.” Better known for light fare like “Spider-Man” and romantic comedies, Dunst plays the lead in the part science-fiction, part family drama from Danish director Lars von Trier, which opens in select U.S. cities on Friday. The actress, 29, found herself challenged with intense emotional scenes and nudity while portraying Justine -- a complex bride who deteriorates into a melancholic depression after getting married and immediately regretting it. “It’s a very vulnerable part and there are very difficult scenes, but the environment was very comfortable,” said Dunst. “Anything I had to do, which I may not have felt comfortable with in a different setting, felt protected so I could let loose and be open,” the actress added. Complicated female characters and visually arresting images have become a trademark for von Trier, who cast Nicole Kidman in
the 2003 thriller “Dogville” and Charlotte Gainsbourg in the 2009 supernatural movie “Antichrist”. Russia struggles to save Mars moon probe Associated Press Writer
MOSCOW — As Russia’s space agency struggled Thursday to fix a probe bound for a moon of Mars that instead got stuck in Earth’s orbit, some experts said the chances of saving the $170 million craft looked slim. Roscosmos spokesman Alexei Kuznetsov said efforts to communicate with the unmanned Phobos-Grunt (Phobos-Ground) spacecraft hadn’t brought any results yet. The probe will come crashing down in a couple of weeks if engineers fail to fix the problem. The Phobos-Grunt was launched Wednesday and reached preliminary orbit, but its engines never fired to send it off to the Red Planet. Kuznetsov said controllers on Thursday will continue attempts to fix the probe’s engines to steer it to its path to one of Mars’ two moons, Phobos. Roscosmos chief Vladimir Popovkin, said the system that keeps the spacecraft pointed in the right direction may have failed. Other space experts suggested that the craft’s computer failure was a likely cause. If a software flaw was the problem, scientists can likely fix it by sending new commands. Some experts think, however, that the failure was rooted in hardware and will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to fix. “I think we have lost the Phobos-Grunt,” Vladimir Uvarov, a former top space expert at the Russian Defense Ministry, said in an interview published Thursday in the government daily Rossiyskaya Gazeta. “It looks like a serious flaw. The past experience shows that efforts to make the engines work will likely fail.” Complicating the recovery efforts, the space agency only has a few hours a day to reach the probe due to Russia’s limited earth-to-space communications network. Kuznetsov said new attempts to contact the craft will be made Thursday evening. The spacecraft is 13.2 metric tons (14.6 tons), and most of that weight, about 11 metric tons (12 tons), is highly toxic fuel. Most experts believe the fuel will likely stay liquid if the probe comes down and would harmlessly blow up about 50 miles (80 kilometers) above ground, but some fear it may freeze, survive the fiery reentry and spill on impact.

CHICAGO — Every child should be tested for high cholesterol as early as age 9 — surprising new advice from a government panel that suggests screening kids in grade school for a problem more common in middle age. The idea will come as a shock to most parents. And it’s certain to stir debate. The doctors on the expert panel that announced the new guidelines Friday concede there is little proof that testing now will prevent heart attacks decades later. But many doctors say waiting might be too late for children who have hidden risks. Fat deposits form in the heart arteries in childhood but don’t usually harden them and cause symptoms until later in life. The panel urges cholesterol screening between ages 9 and 11 — before puberty, when cholesterol temporarily dips — and again between ages 17 and 21. The panel also suggests diabetes screening every two years starting as early as 9 for children who are overweight and have other risks for Type 2 diabetes, including family history. The new guidelines are from an expert panel appointed by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature said a recent reassessment of the Western Black Rhino had led it to declare the species extinct, adding that the Northern White Rhino of central Africa is now “possibly extinct” in the wild and the Javan Rhino is “probably extinct” in Vietnam, after poachers killed the last animal there in 2010. A small but declining population of the Javan Rhino survives on the Indonesian island of Java, it added. “A lack of political support and willpower for conservation efforts in many rhino habitats, international organized crime groups targeting rhinos and increasing illegal demand for rhino horns and commercial poaching are the main threats faced by rhinos,” the group said in a statement accompanying the latest update of its so-called Red List of endangered species. About a quarter of all mammals are at risk of extinction, IUCN said, adding that some species have been brought back from the brink with successful conservation programs. The Southern White Rhino numbered just
100 animals at the end of the 19th century, but has since flourished and now has a population of over 20,000. The Przewalski’s Horse, a type of wild horse from Central Asia, has come back from extinction after a successful breeding program in captivity. The Red List now contains almost 62,000 species of plants and animals, whose status is constantly monitored by conservationists.

LAS VEGAS - Manny Pacquiao was tested to the full before retaining his WBO welterweight title with a controversial majority decision over Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand Garden Arena Saturday. The 32-year-old southpaw received as much punishment from his older opponent as he dished out over the 12 rounds but his superior foot and hand speed made the difference as he improved his career record to 54-3-2 with 38 knockouts. Back in the ring for a third time since claiming a seat in his country’s national congress last year, Pacquiao won his 15th consecutive fight after earning two of the verdicts from the three judges. Dave Moretti (115-113) and Glenn Trowbridge (116-112) awarded the fight to the Filipino while Robert Hoyle made it a 114-114 draw. “My fans are very happy because clearly they thought I won the fight,� Pacquiao said in a ringside interview as boos echoed around the arena from the disgruntled Mexican fans. “We have to accept that my opponent is not easy. He is a good fighter and it’s not easy, but I won the fight. He was ready for my punches but I thought I blocked a lot of his punches.� Asked if he would consider a fourth bout with three-division world champion Marquez who has consistently been his toughest opponent, Pacquiao replied: “Any time, any time. Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone thinks it unlikely that third cars will become a part of the sport, despite a fresh push by Ferrari for them to be allowed. The idea of having third cars resurfaced recently on the back of discussions that took place within the Formula 1 Commission about intellectual property and technology transfer between teams. As part of the debate following that meeting, Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo suggested that F1 would be better off seeing smaller outfits running cars from the frontrunning teams. Speaking at the Ferrari World Finals in Mugello last weekend, di Montezemolo said: “There’s the issue of the third car, which mark my words, we support not so much for our own interests but more for those of the sport in general. “We believe the interest of
the fans, media and sponsors could increase if there is a bigger number of competitive cars on track rather than cars that are two or three seconds off the pace, being lapped after just a few laps. “As an example, remember in 1961 Giancarlo Baghetti won the French Grand Prix at Reims with a privately entered Ferrari. There you are, it would be nice one day in the future to see one of our cars running in American colours, or Chinese, or maybe those of Abu Dhabi.”
The idea of third cars has not got much support from elsewhere in the paddock, however - and even Ecclestone believes the move would not be a good thing unless grid numbers dropped. When asked by AUTOSPORT for his feelings on the matter, Ecclestone said: “If by chance we lost a couple of teams then I think it will probably be good. “But the other teams don’t like it. You can imagine if we have got three Ferraris, three Red Bulls, and three McLarens, it is not so good for other people.” Rival team bosses think it better that effort is spent ensuring that every team on the grid can be competitive, rather than heading down the route of customer cars.
McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh said: “I think the DNA, the structure of Formula 1, requires the variety of teams and we have got some new teams and we have got some smaller teams and we recognise that it is very, very challenging to get the budget to compete in Formula 1. “If, today, Ferrari, Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes all fielded third cars then I think, in my view, it would be damaging for the sport. There are pros and cons and I think it is right to have the debate and people have different views but at the moment I think what we should be concentrating on is ensuring that we have got a viable and sustainable model for all of the teams in F1.”
Renault will keep door open for Kubica RENAULT has vowed to do what it can to try and keep a seat open for Robert Kubica throughout next year, amid the increasing likelihood that the Polish driver will not be fit for the start of the season. Kubica is still recovering from the serious injuries he suffered in a rally crash during February, and there is still no definite news on when he will be ready to return to racing. Although that means Renault may be forced to look
elsewhere for a team-mate for Vitaly Petrov next year, team principal Eric Boullier has not ruled out slotting in Kubica later in the campaign if he cannot come back any earlier. When asked by AUTOSPORT about the latest Kubica situation, Boullier said: “The latest I have is that he cannot commit to any deadline, so we have to discuss a common communication plan. We obviously want him to be back.
“If it has to be during the course of next year, why not? There are some conditions that we need to discuss, and I need to discuss with his manager that once he knows he cannot be back, or if he cannot be back, then any scenarios we now need to properly communicate.” Boullier had originally laid down an October deadline for Kubica to give firm news on his future plans, and that was subsequently extended. Although there is still no
certainty over Kubica’s position, Boullier insists he is not worrying yet about the situation - especially as he has plenty of options for next year. “I am patient because I am morally committed for him, he was very important for us,” he said. “We play the game, we played every game for him and I am morally committed. If I can have a scenario where he can be back, even during the course of the year, I will try to make it, but obviously I cannot do more.”
