GENOA, Italy – Sixteen people were hospitalised early Wednesday after Serbian fans clashed with Italian police following the two countries’ cancelled Euro 2012 qualifying match in Genoa, northern Italy. In violence before, during, and after the match, some Serbian fans targeted not just Italian fans and local police but their own team’s goalkeeper. Police made 17 arrests, Ansa news agency reported, citing officials. Buses carrying Serbian fans were later escorted out of the city by police to avoid further clashes with Italian fans. Officers seized sticks, metal bars and knives from the Serbian fans, as
well as a bag carrying large explosive fireworks. The violence brought sharp condemnation from Italy and Serbia. “The Beasts,” read a front-page headline in La Gazzetta dello Sport, accompanied by a picture of one of the ringleaders of the violence. The most seriously injured in the violence early Wednesday was a member of the carabinieri, who was rushed to hospital after an explosive device detonated in his face. A Serbian fan also suffered facial injuries. Bali News Expansion of Ngurah Rai Airport moves 3 schools Mangupura (Bali Post)—
Three schools namely Wipara Kindergarten, SDN 4 Tuban state primary school and SMP Angkasa junior high school located in the airport area will be moved in relation to the development of Ngurah Rai Airport. In addition to schools, a number of office facilities will also be relocated, too. “There are 3 schools in the airport area. The three schools will be relocated but their location remains in the vicinity of the airport,” said President Director of PT Angkasa Pura I (Persero), Tommy Soetomo, in the meeting of the project development acceleration of Ngurah Rai Airport on Monday. It was said that the moving would be discussed immediately between the party of AP I and the Badung Education Agency so that it would not interfere with the process of teaching and learning. Meanwhile, General Manager (GM) of PT Angkasa Pura I (Persero) Ngurah Rai Airport, Heru Legowo, Tuesday (Oct 12) claimed
the land of the three schools was owned by AP I. Admittedly, the kindergarten and junior high school were schools managed by the Foundation of the Spouse Association of Angkasa Pura’s Employees (Periskapura). “We would like to emphasize that there will be no eviction,” he affirmed. The party of AP I would build those relocated schools prior to the relocation process. It was intended not to interfere with the learning process. Mayungan Anyar Hamlet Retains Agrotourism Potential If government is serious about developing new destinations as an effort to attract more tourists to stay longer on this island, Mayungan Anyar Hamlet can potentially be developed into agrotourism. The hamlet belonging to Antapan Village territory, Tabanan has uniqueness of its own. “Mayungan Hamlet has agrotourism attraction along with its Five Enchantments,” said Eka Mahadewi in Nusa Dua recently. Ticket brokers of the Nusa Jaya Abadi ferry were increasingly brutal and difficult to be dammed. Residents or passengers continued to complain about it. Illegal, Dimly Lit Cafes in Denpasar The booming cafes in several areas of Denpasar have not given any positive effects to its surrounding. It’s not rare there have been complains from its local residents who felt disturbed by the loud music that was on. More over, it’s only opened at night and the kind of food and drinks are only certain kinds. This condition has cause difficulties for Denpasar City Government to produce permits for these dimly lit cafes. These cafes status are very unsure as if it’s categorized as a bar it doesn’t complete the regulations, and also could not be categorized as a restaurant. “The café could be a restaurant. Yet until now it doesn’t complete itself to be one looking from the regulations. As the food and drinks sold are not completing its standardization,” Head of Denpasar Permits Agency, AA Rai Soryawan, explained when met at Mayor of Denpasar City Office, last Tuesday (12/10).
It is said that until now they haven’t given out a café permit as from the supervising done, this kind of business usually operated without finding a permit and so those cafes are actually illegal, “I think this kind of business operated without any permits.” Connecting to the contribution of the area, there has been none. This is admitted by Kesiman’s Village Head, I Made Karim, as when contacted through telephone he actually did not know there’s a café in his area, “Until now there are no con-
tributions from cafés to the village. And I don’t know if there are any cafes in the Kesiman Traditional Village.” Meanwhile an owner of a café around Renon admitted has been filled by quite a number of workers. At least there are 19 people and mostly from outside Bali. They work at night accompanying the café’s guests. About 223 kilometers of roads in Jembrana are still in damaged condition. However, the local governments can not repair the road because of limited budgets for road infrastructure. The head of Department of Public Works in Jembrana, I Ketut Swijana on Tuesday, October 12th 2010, said that the length of damaged roads was around 22 percent of the total length of roads in Jembrana. Of the total road length of 941 kilometers according to the District with the fiscal capacity of around Rp 12 billion per year, the Office can only work an average of 40 miles per year. So when counted, it took up to 20 years more for all of the road could be improved. “We are targeting all hotmix indeed, but our budget is insufficient for the” said Swijana.

Experts meet ahead of naval drills in SKorea AP
SEOUL, South Korea – South Korea launched its participation Wednesday in a U.S.-led coalition to intercept ships suspected of spreading weapons of mass destruction, risking the anger of rival North Korea, one of the countries targeted by the program. North Korea has long warned it would consider Seoul’s participation in the Proliferation Security Initiative as a declaration of war against the North. South Korea was hosting a seminar Wednesday among 15 participating nations in the southeastern city of Busan, to be followed Thursday with naval interdiction drills involving South Korea, the U.S., Australia and Japan in international waters between South Korea and Japan, the Defense Ministry said. The program, which began in 2003, has been joined by more than 90 countries to help deter trade in weapons of mass destruction and missiles by states including North Korea and Iran. Seoul said last year it was joining the maritime web after the North conducted its second atomic test. The drills also come amid lingering tension on the divided Korean peninsula following the March deadly sinking of a South Korean warship blamed on Pyongyang. In May, a multinational investi-
gation led by Seoul concluded that a torpedo fired from a North Korean submarine sank the 1,200-ton warship. North Korea has denied involvement in the sinking that killed 46 South Korean sailors. The sinking has dimmed the prospects for resuming the stalled international talks aimed at dismantling North Korea’s nuclear programs. North Korea quit the talks last year, but it has expressed willingness to rejoin the talks, which include the U.S., South Korea, China, Japan and Russia. Seoul and Washington have said the North must first take specific moves to demonstrate its sincerity. In Beijing, Chinese nuclear envoy Wu Dawei told reporters Tuesday after his meeting with North Korea’s First Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan that Pyongyang appeared to have positive stance in resuming the nuclear talks, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported Wednesday. Kim, who served as the North’s top nuclear envoy, was promoted last month from vice foreign minister. BEIRUT – Thousands of cheering Lebanese welcomed Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Lebanon on Wednesday, throwing rose petals and sweets at his motorcade at the start of a visit that underscores deep divisions within this tiny Arab nation. Ahmadinejad is making his first state visit to Lebanon at a time when tensions have mounted between Iranian-backed Hezbollah and Westernbacked parties in the government. The growing crisis has raised fears over the fate of the unity government that includes both sides and has managed to keep a tenuous calm. The visit by the leader of Iran — Hezbollah’s most powerful ally — throws Lebanon’s divisions into sharp relief. Trailed by heavily armed security in bulletproof vests, Ahmadinejad smiled and waved to the crowds from the sunroof of his black SUV as he headed to the presidential palace to meet President Michel Suleiman.
“Ahmadinejad has done a lot for Lebanon, we are here to thank him,” said Fatima Mazeh, an 18-year-old engineering student who took the day off classes to join the crowds. “He’s not controlling Lebanon. BEIJING (Reuters) – China offered on Wednesday to open talks on military issues with rival Taiwan, a move that could cool a potential flashpoint in the Asia-Pacific region and help warming ties, but it drew a cool reaction from the island. “We advocate conducting contacts and exchanges on military issues, including the cross-Strait military deployment issue, in a proper way at a proper time,” Yang Yi, spokesman for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, told a regular news briefing in Beijing. “(We will) discuss setting up a
cross-Strait security mutual trust system to stabilize the cross-Strait situation and ease military security worries,” he added. China has as many as 1,900 short- and mid-range missiles aimed at Taiwan, defense officials on the island say, and Taiwan has urged China to remove them. Beijing has never renounced the threat of force to bring Taiwan into its fold. Taiwan Premier Wu Den-yih, however, told parliament that the time was not yet right to discuss disarmament because the two sides needed more trust. “I’m afraid the time is not ripe,” Wu said, according to the semi-official Central News Agency reported.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

KABUL, Afghanistan – Five charred bodies were recovered from the wreckage of a cargo plane Wednesday that slammed into a mountaintop east of Afghanistan’s capital Kabul with eight people aboard. Searchers scoured the blackened site high up the mountainside for three other crew members missing and feared dead, said police Gen. Zulmayi Horya Khail. The plane went down east of the capital shortly after take-off from Bagram Air Field, the main U.S. military base in Afghanistan, at about 8 p.m. (1530 GMT) Tuesday. The cause of the crash wasn’t immediately known. Weather conditions were clear at the time. An Associated Press photographer near the scene saw wreckage ablaze on the mountainside Tuesday night. Hundreds of Afghan security forces in fatigues carrying M-16 rifles gathered at the bottom of the
mountain Wednesday. Smoke could be seen rising from the scattered wreckage several hundred yards (meters) straight up. “Today our forces are working to secure the site and we are waiting for the further orders from the Afghan defense ministry to move to the next step,” said Afghan National Army commander Col. NATO said in a statement the crash occurred about 16 miles (30 kilometers) east of the Kabul International Airport. In May, a passenger plane operated by Pamir Airways, a private Afghan airline, crashed while traveling from Kunduz in northern Afghanistan to the capital. All 44 passengers on the plane died.

MADRID – A Spanish official says three Frenchmen died when a small plane they were flying in crashed into the side of a fogshrouded mountain in the northern Navarra region.
The official with the Navarra regional government says the plane that crashed Tuesday was one of 12 which had taken off from the southern French town of Lezignan-Corbieres as part of a fundraising air rally that was to take them all the way down to Senegal in West Africa.
Their first destination in Spain was the northwest city of Salamanca. The plane crashed in a mountainous region of Navarra where there was thick fog after a day of heavy rains, the official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity in line with department policy.

JAKARTA - Australia and Indonesia agreed on Wednesday to further discuss plans for a refugee centre in East Timor to stem the flow of asylum seekers through Southeast Asia on their way to Australia. Australian Immigration Minister Chris Bowen said after meeting Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa that Jakarta would send officials to further talks on development of the facility. “Minister Natalegawa agreed to make his officials available in the coming weeks to further develop the proposal,” Bowen told reporters. “He certainly understood the importance of a processing centre in terms of a broader regional framework,” he said. Indonesian foreign ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah said the processing centre was still an idea. “We return to the position to listen to their explanation. Our foreign affairs minister stressed its importance as part of a regional framework,” Faizasyah said. Australia and East Timor agreed on Tuesday to form a joint working group to develop the processing centre to stem the flow of asylum seekers heading to Australia. East Timorese President Jose
Ramos-Horta previously said the proposed centre to be built in his impoverished nation had to be temporary and could cost about 30 million dollars. Ramos-Horta dismissed reports of widespread domestic opposition to the proposals, saying people would agree once he explained the humanitarian imperatives. Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard first raised the proposal for a regional migrant detention facility based in East Timor in July amid a surge in the arrival of undocumented migrants by boat in Australian waters. Thousands of asylum seekers head through Southeast Asian countries on their way to Australia every year and many link up with people smugglers in Indonesia for the dangerous voyage. About 100 boats carrying more than 4,000 people have arrived this year, in which it has become a politically sensitive issue for Gillard’s fragile Labor-led coalition.

JAKARTA - New infra-red footage released Tuesday captures a rare tiger roaming in protected forests on Indonesia’s Sumatra island, which conservationists alleged to have been illegally cleared. The video captured in May and June this year was released by environmental group WWF, which has been monitoring Sumatran tigers since last year in a wildlife preserve near Bukit Tigapuluh national park in Riau province.
In one clip, a male Sumatran tiger was seen walking towards a camera and sniffing it. About a week later, a bulldozer was seen flattening land at the same spot, believed to be making way for roads to new palm-oil plantations, WWF spokeswoman Desmarita Murni told AFP. “There were strong indications of illegal land-clearing activities and this must be investigated. The video showed concrete evidence that there were threats to tigers in this area,” she added.
The WWF said it had reported the land clearing in the Bukit Batabuh area to the authorities and “the operations have since stopped”. “But we don’t know when they will come back, so we’re urging for monitoring to be intensified in the area,” Murni said. Human-animal conflicts are a rising problem as people encroach on wildlife habitats in Indonesia, an archipelago with some of the world’s largest remaining tropical forests. There are as few as 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild in Indonesia, WWF said.

JAKARTA - The Indonesian government has asked Taiwanese authorities to clarify nepagin preservatives in soy sauce of Indomie instant noodles circulating in Taiwan, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said. “We have asked the drug and food supervisory board there to clarify that our products are safe and meet international standards and are not dangerous,” she said here on Tuesday night. The clarification was very important since misinformation on one of export products would have an impact on trade in other Indonesian export commodities, she said. She made it clear the nipagin or methyl p-hydroxybenzoate content in the soy sauce of Indomie instant noodles under certain variants had complied with the regulation of the health minister on standard content of food preservatives. Chief of the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) Kustantinah said earlier under the domestic rule the maximum limit of nipagin content in soy sauce was 250 milligram for every kilogram of the
product. The rule was based on the globally-accepted guidelines set by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), she said. In fact, CAC itself had set the maximum limit of nipagin content in soy sauce at 1,000 milligrams for every kilogram of the product, he said. She said Taiwan had indeed adopted different standards in the use of nipagin for soy sauce. “Although their standards are different from ours both are safe and meet international standards,” she said. The BPOM chief said all registered and licensed instant noodles circulating in the domestic market were safe for consuming. Taiwanese authorities late last week conducted a raid on Indonesian-made instant noodles circulating in Taiwan for allegedly containing methyl p-hydroxybenzoate which is commonly used in the manufacture of cosmetics. The world’s biggest instant noodle producer, PT Indofood Sukses Makmur (ICBP), said on Monday its products exported to Taiwan had met the local food safety requirements.

DENPASAR – Miss Universe Japan 2009, Miyasaka Emiri will take part in marathon on the Bali International Sport Week which will be held on Sunday, October 17th 2010 in Nusa Dua. Ida Bagus Antara, the head of Bali International Sport Week (BISW), said that Miyasaka Emiri will take part in the 5 kilometers race. “She already confirmed to compete in the race,” he added.
The race itself is divided into three categories which are 5 kilometers, 10 kilometers, and 21 kilometers. “Approximately 1,000 runners from Indonesia and abroad will take part in the race. The marathon is also a part of the 8th Nusa Dua Fiesta,” Antara said. He also explained that the 21 kilometers race will be opened by Indonesian Sport and Youth Minister, Andi Malarangeng, the 10 kilometers by Bali’s Governor, Made Mangku Pastika, and the
5 kilometers by the head of Bali Police Department, Hadiatmoko. “The star of the marathon will be in Nusa Dua then the participants go through Ngurah Rai Street and finish in Nusa Dua once more,” Antara said. Many runners will confirm their participation only one or two days before the race start so the committee is still waiting for them. Antara said that in addition to professional runners, students, police and the army also will take part in the marathon.
DENPASAR - Immigration on Board (IoB) has become a breakthrough to the problems of immigration services in Bali when the crowdedness incurred in the immigration process at the airport. At least, the implementation of this visa on arrival (VoA) would ease the entry of foreign tourists into Indonesia. They need not have to queue at the airport immigration. Minister of Culture and Tourism of the RI, Jero Wacik, early this February launched the IoB in Garuda air carrier. This operation was expected to reduce the long queues at the counter of visa on arrival (VoA). Wacik also expressed the possibility to add IoB facilities to other destinations. The party of Garuda Denpasar, Wayan Supatrayasa, Tuesday (Oct 12) submitted that Garuda had served the IoB service for the Tokyo and Osaka to Denpasar routes. Denpasar-Tokyo route had been served 7 times a week by Airbus 330-300 of Business Class with seating capacity of 42 and 215 seats of economy class. Meanwhile, Osaka-Denpasar route was served as much as 4 times a week. “All this time, tourists were complaining about the length of time during the process of VoA. They had to wait for hours just to accomplish the immigration affairs. Garuda Indonesia as a pioneer in the application of IoB has served a number of routes,” he said. According to him, starting
from last Tuesday Garuda added its flight frequency to 7 times a week. “We are going to add IoB service to a number of cities, while the infrastructure of IoB services is provided by the Garuda itself,” he added. In the meantime, the Commercial Director of Garuda Indonesia, Agus Priyanto, not long ago declared that as the national carrier Garuda Indonesia would always support the government’s program to increase the number of tourist visits. “This poses the measure of Garuda Indonesia to facilitate the entry of foreign tourists,” he said. He claimed to have designed the IoB application for other destinations. “We already have an IoB program for other destinations when there has been readiness of the immigration office and payee bank,” he said. Meanwhile, the Head of Bali Government Tourism Office, Ida Bagus Kade Subhiksu stated what performed by the government and Garuda was an effort to increase the number of tourist visits. “We do hope there is an addition to a number of major markets of Bali. Australia, China and Korea are remarkable potential markets,” he said. According to him, this would facilitate the IoB implementation to tourists visiting Bali. “The most important thing is half of the lines will be resolved. Balinese Culture The Soul By this time the corpse has lost ‘all importance,’ and from this time on, the family is concerned entirely with the soul of the dead person, A most important accessory for the ensuing ceremonies, and the object around which the rites revolve, is the adegan, the effigy in which the soul is embodied to be purified. The adegan consists of two images’, one silhouetted out of palm leaf in the traditional tjili shape and a more realistic one drawn on a thin tablet of sandalwood: bound together and placed- on a, silver vase that rests on a silver platter. Betel-nut, sirih leaves and flowers for praying are placed inside the vase to make the soul comfortable and, nothing being too good for it the to-do add a third, image made of beaten gold, bracelets, ankleits and a comb of silver or gold. The person’s name is written a small label of palm-leaf attached to each adegan. There is effigy for each corpse, but only the adegan is used should remains be available; for instance, if no bones should be found on opening the grave, if its location has been forgotten, or if the person died at sea or in a foreign land. The souls are provided daily with “drinks,” holy water, from sacred springs. They are taken to the burial ground, and the company kneels, in front of the open graves strewing offerings on the ground and singing song and the men dig the earth a little knocking upon it, and call the souls to awaken while someone scatters pennies to distract the devils that wait ready to pounce upon the e and pollute them. The procession returns home, each effigy now incorporating a soul, carried on the bead of a girl, to be blessed in the shrine of each household. Each effigy is then cured as if it were a corpse: it is sprinkled with holy water, the various, ingredients (banten suci to attain physical perfection shreds of mirror, flowers, a gold ring, nails, etc.) are placed over it the egg rolled along its length, and it is decorated with gold and silver objects. The cured effigies are placed near the corpses, wayang music is played and the little egg shell lamps of the angenans are lit for the night and the ceremonies acquire greater significance as the date for the cremation approaches. A great procession is held on the, the cremation day to take the effigies to the house of the high, priest for their final blessing. At the house, towards dusk, the baris dancers perform war dances to cast a protecting net of magic vibrations, and shows are given to entertain the guests. Relatives, guests, and populace spend the night divided between watching an all-night shadow-play and listening to public readings of the Balinese classic Bhima Swarga, the tale of the fantastic adventures of Bhima on his visit to Hades. Tradition prescribes that this should be read aloud from beginning to -end on the eve of cremation. In dark comers people huddle to steal naps. Outside, the orchestras, among them the gambang, only heard at cremations, boom and bum throughout the night.

SHANGHAI - A loose monetary policy in the United States hurts the global economy and puts massive inflation pressure on emerging economies, a researcher with a Chinese government think tank said Tuesday. The criticism of US monetary policy and its weakening dollar comes as Washington steps up attacks on Beijing over its yuan exchange rate, which US lawmakers claim is grossly undervalued and is causing global trade imbalances. US policies were putting pressure on emerging economies’ currencies and fanning inflation in them as they import resources denominated in dollars at higher prices, Zhang Monan, a researcher at the State Information Centre said in comments published in the official China Securities Journal.
A weaker dollar tends to boost demand for dollar-priced resources, which come cheaper for buyers using stronger currencies. In turn, that usually lifts demand and prices. “Data showed that nearly twothirds of the 20 emerging economies have negative real interest rates. The upward pressure on overall price levels is huge,” she wrote. “The quantitative easing monetary policy in the US will severely hurt the balance of international payments and currency reserves in emerging economies,” Zhang wrote. The dollar has fallen 6.5 per-
cent against a basket of major currencies since September while the Chinese yuan has risen 1.74 percent against the dollar in the same period, the researcher said. Zhang noted that given the current situation, an interest rate hike may not help China curb domestic inflation as monetary liquidity floods global markets and pushes prices higher. With the interest rate gap between China and other countries, a rate hike may increase upward pressure on the yuan and lead to more speculative funds flowing in, she said.

WASHINGTON - There is “no risk” of a global currency war erupting, despite recent currency interventions by nations ranging from Japan to Colombia, US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said Tuesday. Geithner acknowledged in an interview on “The Charlie Rose Show” broadcast on Bloomberg TV that Brazil has made reference to the possibility, but he brushed aside fears. “They used that phrase,” Geithner said. However “there is no risk of that.” Geithner’s comments came despite a failure this weekend by the world’s top finance officials meeting in Washington to reach a consensus on measures that could head off a potential currency battle. In a statement, the International Monetary and Financial Committee — the policy arm of the IMF — on Saturday stopped short of any specific call on China or others to change policies of using a low currency and accumulation of reserves to boost exports. The International Monetary Fund steering committee, which has been struggling to address friction among key economies including China and the United States, noted “tensions and vulnerabilities” due to “widening global imbalances” but said the organization should continue to study the situation Geithner on Saturday said the IMF “must strengthen its surveillance of exchange rate policies and reserve accumulation practices,” adding that “excess reserve accumulation on a global scale is leading to serious distortions in the international monetary and financial system.” Recent IMF figures showed Beijing had currency reserves of 2.447 trillion dollars, the largest in the world and nearly 30 percent of the global total. Washington maintains that China purchases large amounts of dollars to keep the yuan artificially low, which distorts global trade by boosting Chinese exports.

BEIJING - China said Wednesday its trade surplus shrank in September, but analysts warn the drop is unlikely to ease fears of a global currency war, with Beijing accused of cheating its way to commercial dominance. The country’s trade surplus fell to 16.88 billion dollars in September from 20.03 billion dollars in August, and was the lowest surplus in five months, customs authorities said. The figures come as China set the yuan’s central parity rate — the middle of the currency’s allowed trading band — at 6.6693 to the dollar, its strongest since a June promise of limited currency reform. But the data is unlikely to calm angry US and European lawmakers, who are demanding that China let the yuan appreciate faster against the dollar. “I think the pressure is still going to be there,” Brian Jackson, a Hong Kongbased senior strategist at Royal Bank of Canada, told AFP. “I think the fact that their exports are still very strong suggests that there’s plenty of scope for them to do more on the currency.” Some critics claim the yuan is undervalued by as much as 40 percent, giving Chinese exporters an unfair advantage by making their shipments artificially cheap. Beijing vowed in June to let the yuan trade more freely against the dollar. Since then, the currency has advanced around two percent against the greenback. Recent currency interventions by nations ranging from Japan to Colombia have sparked fears of a global currency war and the Chinese trade data has done little to ease those concerns, analysts said. “China’s overall trade surplus may have declined slightly last month, but tensions are unlikely to do the same,” said Mark Williams, a London-based economist at Capital Economics.
China’s exports rose by 25.1 percent in September year-on-year to 144.99 billion dollars, compared with an increase of 34.4 percent in August, the data showed. Imports rose 24.1 percent on-year in September to a record high of 128.11 billion dollars, but slower than the 35.2 percent growth recorded in August, the report said. The slower growth was due to the high base effect last year rather than weakness in the global economy, Bank of America-Merrill Lynch analyst Lu Ting said in a research note. Beijing-based Citigroup economist Ken Peng told AFP that despite the slowing export and import growth last month, the data remained very strong and would “not stop the calls for more appreciation” in the currency. China has repeatedly rejected demands for a sharp rise in the yuan, with Premier Wen Jiabao telling European lawmakers last week that such a move would destroy Chinese firms and fuel social instability by triggering job losses. “The world will by no means benefit from a crisis in the Chinese economy,” Wen added, pledging to “gradually allow more flexibility in the yuan exchange rate while maintaining its basic stability”. While China has said it wants to reduce its heavy reliance on exports to drive the economy, the export sector remains a massive employer in the country of 1.3 billion people. China’s top central banker Zhou Xiaochuan said at an International Monetary Fund meeting last week that the yuan would move gradually towards an “equilibrium” level but rejected any “shock therapy”. The country’s foreign exchange regulator said Tuesday that reforming the yuan exchange rate did not equate to currency appreciation and that market players should get used to “two-way fluctuation in the yuan exchange rate”.

British author Howard Jacobson in surprise Booker Prize win Agence France Presse
LONDON - British author Howard Jacobson was named the surprise winner of this year’s prestigious Booker Prize for literature for his comic novel about love, loss and Jewishness. Jacobson’s work “The Finkler Question” defied the odds Tuesday to pick up the award and 50,000 pounds (80,000 dollars, 55,000 euros) prize money for his tale of two old school friends and their teacher. The London columnist and writer — twice previously longlisted for the Booker — beat favourite Tom McCarthy and double winner Peter Carey to the prize. Almost as well known for his ability to narrowly miss out on major literary prizes as for his writing skills, Jacobson joked about the long wait he had faced for such recognition as he picked up the award. “I’m speechless. Fortunately I prepared one earlier. It’s dated 1983, that is how long the wait’s been,” the 68-year-old told the London ceremony. He added: “It is beyond belief for me because I was so accus-
tomed to being somebody that was, to begin with, not liked by the Booker Prize.” The decision by the five judges to award him the prize was not unanimous, with the final verdict three to two in his favour. Chair of the judges, English poet Andrew Motion, said the work was “a completely worthy winner of this great prize.” “‘The Finkler Question’ is a marvellous book: very funny, of course, but also very clever, very sad and very subtle.” The story’s main character is a former BBC radio producer, Julian Treslove, who despite not being Jewish develops a fascination with Jewishness. The tale explores this theme through his relationship with two Jewish friends. Britain’s press praised the decision to hand the award to the writer, with the Guardian newspaper hailing “a victory for that most overlooked genre on literary prize lists, the comic novel.” The Independent said awarding the prize to Jacobson “broke the mould.” “It was predicted to be the most likely loser, not least because a comic novel has never satisfied the tastes of high-minded judges,” said the paper.

“There is very little performance comedy that works on his intellectual level. He’s one of these guys that can do it. It just needed a form,” Seinfeld said during a press event Tuesday to publicize the show. “I kind of challenged him to come up with a form and he did. And then once he did, I was kind of stuck getting involved with it.” In the show, Quinn — the former host of MTV’s late-1980s game show “Remote Control” and a “Saturday Night Live” cast member — takes audiences through the history of the world, highlighting why empires always seem to fail. “This show is about how human nature just steps in every time and ruins everything,” he said.
The show debuted off-Broadway this summer to generally good reviews and now goes on Broadway at the Helen Hayes Theatre for an 11-week run starting Oct. 22. Seinfeld and Quinn, who met decades ago while working comedy clubs, said collaborating on this project was easy since they both know stand-up and have complementary talents. “I’m very smart about being funny and he’s very funny about being smart,” said Seinfeld. “He’s really a smart guy that figured out how to be funny, and I’m smart about taking funny and figuring out how to pace it and organize it. So it was a good blend of skills.”
Quinn has been testing slivers of the show’s material for years, but found comedy clubs weren’t the best venues for intellectual humor. “They’ll stay with you for about 30 minutes. Then they’re like, ‘All right, c’mon. Will somebody talk about the lower half of the body, please? We get it: You’re smart,’” he said. The one-man show is constantly being tweaked to add or remove topical elements. “We don’t want it to end. At some point, it’ll end. But it’s fun to keep playing with it. It’s like a car — you keep tuning it,” Seinfeld said. Asked how he knew what was funny on stage, Seinfeld deadpanned: “I had a sitcom in the ’90s,” he said.

NEW YORK – Hilary Duff may be a recently married young woman of 23, but when it comes to books she’s not quite ready to grow up. “I love reading young adult books even though I’m a little older than the set demographic for YA,” she said Tuesday. “I love adventure. I relate to girl characters, love, finding yourself and breaking out of the mold that people put you in.” It makes sense then that the actress and singer would decide to write her first novel “Elixir” for the younger set. Duff may have a feel for her reading audience, too, from
knowing her viewing audience. Duff played Lizzie MacGuire for two seasons on the Disney Channel from 2001-2004. Fans who watched her on TV may also want to check out her book. “Elixir” is about a young photojournalist named Clea Raymond whose photos have extra images in them that weren’t there originally. Then her father disappears. Clea sets off to unravel the mystery of both. “This idea just kept coming to me and building in my head. I thought ‘What am I gonna do with this? Am I gonna write a script or pitch the idea? Have someone else write it?’ And then I thought ‘I’m open for a new challenge. I’m going to try to write a
book.’” Duff has had a busy year. Besides writing, she also wed pro hockey player Mike Comrie in August. She says publishing deadlines can be more stressful than planning a wedding. “It’s very similar ... They (publishers at Simon & Schuster Children’s) were very good to me during the writing process and very lenient with dates and stuff until the very end. Then it got hectic. I was planning the wedding, and there’s deadlines with that, too, like getting the location and getting your dress at a certain time ... I tend to do everything at the last minute ... I couldn’t even choose which one is harder. I guess I’d say the book.”

Sony unveils TVs with Google’s Web-surfing system Associated Press Writer
SAN FRANCISCO – Sony’s lineup of sleek televisions boasting Google’s Web-surfing system will go on sale Saturday, testing how much consumers are willing to pay to combine access to the entire Internet with their regular TV programming. The high-definition sets unveiled Tuesday evening in New York will have LCD screens ranging from 24 inches to 46 inches, with recommended retail prices from $600 to $1,400. Sony will begin selling the new sets in its online store Saturday, and they should be available in Best Buy Co.’s U.S. stores by early next week. Pre-orders are currently being taken at both Sony’s and Best Buy’s websites. Sony’s price for its Google TV sets is $200 to $400 higher than comparable TVs without the highly touted software, a differential that threatens to dampen sales at a time the still-shaky economy is causing more households to pinch their pennies. The strong sales of Apple Inc.’s iPhone and iPad have demonstrated that people are still willing to open their wallets to buy breakthrough gadgets, but persuading them usually requires a snazzy marketing campaign that shows why the products are worth the extra money. Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey
said he isn’t convinced that Sony and Google will be able to make a compelling enough case to turn this new generation of TVs into a must-have item, even though he is impressed with the technology inside the sets. “Price is going to be important,” he said. “Google TV is a powerful experience, but most people aren’t going to understand it unless they can see it in action. And Google isn’t known for its consumer marketing experience. I think they have the right concept here, but I am not sure about the execution yet.” Sony is planning a marketing blitz to promote its Google TV sets through the holiday shopping season, although the company isn’t saying how much it will spend on the campaign. Google traditionally has refrained from buying TV ads, relying instead on
its ubiquity on the Internet and the marketing acumen of its partners. Like millions of mobile phones that have been sold in the past two years, Sony’s new TVs will be built on Google’s Android operating system. They will navigate websites with Google’s Chrome browser and rely on Intel Corp.’s Atom chips for their processing power. The system can comb through the Internet, television programming guides and even DVRs from satellite operator Dish Network Corp. to find all video connected to a request entered into a search bar at the top of the screen. “Finally, you can seamlessly search your favorite TV programs and websites on the same screen, at the same time,” said Mike Abary, senior vice president of Sony Corp.’s home division. The remote control for Sony’s Google TVs includes a standard, “QWERTY” keyboard to enter the search requests or make other comments on the Internet while retaining the ability to watch TV simultaneously. Logitech International SA has bundled the same Google TV package into a set-top box that can be plugged into existing TVs with HDMI sets. The Logitech boxes, already available for pre-order, are selling for $300, undercutting a similar box with a Blu-ray player that Sony is selling for $400.

ZAGREB - An iron used for a wedding suit, a rear-view mirror broken in a jealous fit and a lower leg prosthesis — at first it’s hard to find any link between the items on display at a new museum in Croatia. But every exhibit in the Museum of Broken Relationships has one thing in common — it tells the story of a lost love. These material remnants of failed romances down the years are sometimes mundane, sometimes bizarre, sometimes funny, sad or even kinky. The prosthesis is laid out on a white pillar, tastefully lit. It belonged to a Croat war invalid who had an affair with a social worker. “The prosthesis lasted longer than our love. It was made of sturdier material,” says the caption. Others exhibits include a tool used to axe an ex-girlfriend’s furniture, a red wig from New York and garterbelts from Sarajevo. “I never put them on. The relationship might have lasted longer if I did,” laments the donor. The idea for the museum came five years ago when artists Olinka Vistica and Drazen Grubisic, who broke up after four years together, discussed how to preserve the heritage of a broken emotional relationship. “Inspired by our own situation we discussed the idea that everything that was nice once and has
changed should not be destroyed but rather preserved in a certain way,” Vistica said. “So in 2006 we launched the project, calling it the Museum of Broken Relationships, in which people could kind of store their feelings. “The concept is that people have a sort of cathartic experience, getting rid of the burden of a failed relationship by donating items from their personal stories.” Although some may baulk at revealing such personal details, Grubisic believes the main motive of donors, who remain anonymous, is to symbolically close a chapter in their life. “All major events in our lives, like weddings or funerals, are accompanied with a sort of a ritual while only in break-ups is one alone. “This in a way provides a kind of a ritual. Through a donation to the museum an object changes its context and becomes something else,” the 41-year-old explained. The newly-opened exhibition in Zagreb has provoked lively interest in both Croatia and abroad. Over the past four years, it has toured around 20 locations in Europe, North America, Asia and Africa. “The original project actually outgrew us so as soon as a suitable location was found we moved to open it as a permanent exhibition,” Vistica says.

BERLIN - German scientists unveiled on Wednesday the latest self-driving car, a phenomenon that its proponents say will sharply reduce accidents, help the environment and transform cities. The car, dubbed the “Made in Germany (MIG)” by its engineers at Berlin’s Free University (FU), uses cameras, laser scanners and
satellite navigation to “see” other vehicles and pedestrians and deal with traffic situations. “Cars that use sensors to recognise other vehicles, pedestrians and bikes will in future drive more safely than people, who lose concentration and get tired,” the FU said. The technology will sharply reduce the number of cars on the road, because people will no longer need their own vehicle so much, using
instead driverless cars pooled in carshare schemes, the MIG’s developers believe. “Most cars spend 90-95 percent of the time parked on the side of the road ... Our aim is to give back most of the roads back to pedestrians,” it said. “In the future people will wonder why at the beginning of the 21st century we still drove our own cars.” The MIG, which from the outside looks like a regular Volkswagen Passat
with a camera on top, was put through its paces at Berlin’s disused Tempelhof airport on Thursday, but it has already been tested on public roads. It is by no means the first selfdriving car, however. US technology giant Google said this week that its driverless cars — but also with a human inside — have already travelled 140,000 miles (225,000 kilometres) around the
San Francisco Bay area. Engineers working with both Google and Berlin’s FU took part in 2007 in the DARPA Urban Challenge organised by the US government, involving driverless cars developed by 35 teams from around the world. Prototypes so far have always had a human being inside to take the controls in case something goes wrong.

AMSTERDAM – The Dutch football federation (KNVB) are set for another row with German champions Bayern Munich after selecting midfielder Mark van Bommel for their Euro 2012 qualifier with Sweden on Tuesday. The Dutch - who have already sparked a row over their playing Arjen Robben during the World Cup finals and who has subsequently not been able to play this season - were asked by the German club to send van Bommel home immediately after he was injured playing in the 1-0 win over Moldova last Friday. However, both national coach Bert van Marwijk - van Bommel’s fatherin-law - and the Dutch medical staff said he had recovered and according to the ANP agency so did the player he eventually played 70 minutes of the match before being replaced. “This is a storm in a teacup,” said van Marwijk shortly before the kick-off. “Mark is not injured. But I understand the Bayern directors as they have a lot invested in him.” However, van Marwijk was not as conciliatory after the 4-1 victory which saw the Dutch make it foiur wins from four qualifiers. “I find it a pity the amount of pressure Bayern
put on to try and prevent Mark from playing this evening,” he said. “All the scans showed that Mark could play. I heard the doctors say that his knee was okay. “Therefore he played. We are trying to get a place at the Euro 2012 finals. The Swedish match was an important match for us to win. And Mark is one of the pillars of the side.” Bayern, who are one of the most aggressive European clubs when it comes to taking on national federations over their players, had taken the decision to recall the player after consulting with their doctor HansWilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt. Van Bommel, the club captain but a vital element to the Dutch midfield for his hardtackling role, had said following the Moldova match that the pain in his knee felt worse. He missed training on Sunday but resumed on Monday. The row over Robben Bundesliga player of the year last season as he inspired them to the domestic double and the Champions League final - exploded when the injury-prone winger suffered a recurrence of the thigh injury that had looked like ruling him out of the World Cup finals. Djokovic stretches China winning streak in Shanghai Agence France Presse
SHANGHAI - Novak Djokovic launched his bid to conquer China for a second week running as the Beijing titleholder rolled past Ivan Ljubicic into the third round on a wet Wednesday at the Shanghai Masters. But it was heatbreak for American Andy Roddick for a second straight year as the 10th seed was forced out with a groin injury to hand a 3-6, 3-2 win to Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Another day of rainy weather disrupted the programme at the premier ATP event, but officials were at least able to finish firstround play by moving indoors to the practice courts at the Qi Zhong centre. Under the lotus-shaped moveable roof at the showcase venue, it was business as usual for world number two Djokovic, who repeated as China Open champion in the capital in a delayed Monday final — an easy win over Spain’s David Ferrer. The 23year-old Serb is among three players to have qualified for next month’s year-end event in London, leaving five spots still open and little more than a month left in the ATP regular season. With a routine 6-3, 6-3 win over Ljubicic, Djokovic improved to 7-2 over the big-serving Croatian. “I had no fatigue at all — actually it was a great start,” said Djokovic, who has won two titles so far this season in Dubai and Beijing.
“Beijing was one of the best tournaments I’ve had in the year. I’m feeling confident on the court and I’m trying to keep that going,” he told reporters. “I’m definitely satisfied with this performance, satisfied with my game, physical state, my condition. I’m playing well, moving well, motivated mentally, and full of energy. The Suns also fared poorly at the foul line in the half, missing seven of 16 free throws. Jefferson was the only player in double figures at intermission, scoring all of his 10 points in the opening period. Jared Dudley led the Suns with nine, while Steve Nash had seven assists — including six on the Suns’ first seven baskets. Nash finished with a game-high 10 assists. The teams played evenly through the third period, with Utah leading 79-71. The Jazz were able to stay in front thanks to their 14-for-14 free throw shooting. The Suns, meanwhile, were only 7 for 12. Jefferson, Deron Williams and Miles combined for 27 of Utah’s 29 points in the third period, Miles leading the way with 10. The Suns’ Hedo Turkoglu left the game with a back contusion in the second quarter and did not return.

Rossi keen to keep winning momentum Fresh from his return to the winners’ circle at Sepang, Valentino Rossi is determined to keep his momentum going as he chases a first Australian Grand Prix victory in five years. While Phillip Island is a circuit where Rossi has won at on seven occasions during his grand prix career, he hasn’t tasted the winners’ champagne there since 2005. If those two cars have the advantage over everyone else, there won’t be pressure on Vettel and he will do it.” RBR team principal Christian Horner has similarly sung his young protégé’s praises in the wake of his supreme, lights-to-flag Japanese success – a second dominant performance at Suzuka in as many years from the 23-year-old Heppenheim native. “One of Sebastian’s strengths of character is the self-belief that he has, and I don’t think he has ever doubted for one moment that he is out of this championship,” the Englishman revealed. “Seb has responded in the best possible way. “We are fortunate in the team to have two level-headed and strongwilled drivers, and while that inevitably poses challenges at times, it is a luxury problem to have.
