Fantasy meets tragedy in surreal drama ‘A Monster Calls’

TORONTO - A teenage boy’s struggle with his mother’s terminal illness takes a surreal turn when he finds comfort in a giant talking tree monster, in the emotional fantasy drama “A Monster Calls.” The film, which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, follows the story of Connor, a quiet, artistic teenage boy who becomes a target for the school bully. As his mother, played by Felicity Jones, gets sicker from cancer, Conner goes to live with his cold, reserved grandmother, played by Sigourney Weaver. In the midst of his life crumbling around him,

Connor is visited at night by a giant talking yew tree monster. The film is adapted from the children’s book of the same name, and Bayona incorporated watercolor animations to illustrate the stories of good and evil that the tree monster, voiced by Liam Neeson, tells Connor. “I had never read anything quite like it,” said Jones, who plays Connor’s ailing mother. “The elements of fantasy, anima-

tion, and a giant, talking tree, and dealing with something that everyone goes through, dealing with loss, I thought was very special.” Newcomer British actor Lewis MacDougall, who plays Connor, said the best part about working on the film was being among the all-star cast and shooting the film in Barcelona. The film will be rolling out across Europe in October and in limited U.S. theaters in December. AMLAPURA - Tourist visit to Karangasem spreads to a number of attractions. Karangasem with dozens of tourist attractions makes travelers have many options. However, seeing the number of tourist visits within the past semester, apparently the tourist visits have not been evenly distributed. Of the 16 attractions, the Ujung Water Palace still becomes the most favorite destination in Karangasem. The data on tourist visit to the attractions obtained from the Karangasem Culture and Tourism Agency in the first half (January-June) of 2016 indicated the first rank was occupied by the Ujung Water Palace. In total, the heritage of the Karangasem royal palace recorded the number of tourist visits of 70,300 (19,305 foreign travelers and 50,995 domestic travelers). France uncovering new terror plots ‘every day’

PARIS - The French Prime Minster warns there “will be new attacks” as a 15-year-old boy is held over a suspected imminent plot. France says it is facing a threat from some 15,000 homegrown radicals French authorities are foiling new terror plots “every day”, according to the country’s prime minister. Manuel Valls said France faced a threat from an estimated 15,000 homegrown radicals, warning that despite the efforts of security services, there “will be new attacks”. He was speaking to radio station Europe 1 as a 15-year-old boy was arrested in Paris on suspicion of planning an imminent knife attack.

“Today the threat is at a maximum, and we are a target,” Valls said on Sunday. “Every day attacks are foiled ... (including) as we speak.” He warned that among the 15,000 people suspected of being in the process of being radicalised, 1,350 are under investigation. “There will be new attacks, there will be innocent victims...this is also my role to tell this truth to the French people,” he said.

The teenager detained in eastern Paris on Saturday had been under house arrest since April for suspected links to Islamic extremists following a search of his home. His arrest comes just days after a police dismantled a “terrorist cell” of female “commandos” in connection with an aborted attack near Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral. Four women, the 15-year-old daughter of one of the women and a man were arrested last week after an abandoned car filled with gas canisters and diesel was found close to the landmark. One of the women was charged with terrorism offences after telling

police she and an accomplice had tried to set the vehicle alight but fled when they saw a man they believed to be a plain-clothes policeman. Three of the women are accused of planning a separate attack. The killing of a priest in a terror attack sparked a major security operation. Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said they were acting on orders coming from Syria. France is in a state of emergency following a series of Islamist attacks which have left 238 people dead since January 2015. Islamic State has claimed responsibility for a number of the attacks including the Paris attacks in Novem-

ber in which 130 people were killed. It also claimed the man who killed 86 people with a truck in Nice in July was one it its “soldiers”. In the meantime, the other tourist attractions are still far behind in terms of tourist visit, namely the Tulamben (17,405), Telaga Waja (14,520), Padangbai (4,634), Labuan/ODC (4,082), Jemeluk (3,925), Karangasem Grand Palace (3,463), Candidasa (843) and Yeh Malet (185). The remaining tourist attractions like the Iseh, Sibetan, Putung and Bukit Jambul are still minimal amounting to zero. Seeing the data, the total number of foreign and domestic tourist visit in the first half of 2016 reached 107,421 people. This situation has not changed in the second half. The data through July showed that Ujung Water Palace has recorded 5,392 foreign travelers and 13,903 domestic travelers. But entering this second semester, Besakih has

nearly the same total tourist visits. But it is different in terms of foreign tourist visit, showing much higher, consisting of 11,981 foreign travelers and 1,475 domestic travelers. The other attraction showed smaller tourist visit where in the second half only recorded 51,881 foreign and domestic travelers. When combined with all the tourist visits in the first half, Karangasem totally recorded 59,302 people. The Head of the Karangasem Culture and Tourism Agency, Wayan Purna, not long ago said that the number did not include the tourist visit in peak season from August to September. He believed the visit will continue to increase as more and more cultural events are held in Karangasem such as the Karangasem Festival, Genjek Festival, Ujung Water Palace Festival, Gebug Ende Festival and others. “Lake Tamblingan is indeed good because the forests and customary communities are strong and they consider the lake as a temple and the forest as a temple, so that no one dares to tamper,” said the environmentalist, Dr. Luh Kartini, in Denpasar, Monday (Sep. 12). Of the three lakes, added Kartini, Lake Buyan is the worst. Primarily it happened due to weeds, other than sedimentation or silting. Actually, when compared to other lakes, Lake Buyan is the deepest “If Lake Buyan disappears, it means the three others will also do because Lake Buyan is the deepest,” said this academician from the Udayana University. Kartini added that Lake Beratan is experiencing pollution due to domestic waste and tourism business and so does the Lake Batur caused by fish cage around the lake and the weeds. Besides, the pollution is also caused by agricultural waste as local farmers are still using pesticides and chemical fertilizers in the three lakes. “Weed issues should be resolved immediately. After that, it must be considered about maintaining the catchment area, processing domestic waste, livestock and agriculture. It must be processed so as not to get into the lake. All must implement organic agriculture but this has not been worked out,” she complained. Kartini understood the lake issues are the authority of central government. However, it does not necessarily mean that local governments either provincial or district government where the lake sits have no any responsibility. Conversely, they should aggressively push central government to immediately take action for the handling of the lakes in Bali. The lakes are closely related to the supply of clean water for the Island of the Gods. “Although it is beyond our authority, we should take care because we take advantage of it. We should encourage central government to do something to the lakes so that they can be preserved. Designation, limits and zoning must clear. After that, we must keep the catchment area, so that nothing is converted. Agricultural system must also be proposed. Otherwise, no one will know,” she affirmed. (kmb32)

New wheelchair lets you cruise through town standing

YOQNEAM- Israeli technology start-up UPnRIDE Robotics is launching an innovative upright, self-stabilizing wheelchair at a medical conference in Germany next month and the company hopes the device will hit the market next year. Before then, UPnRIDE needs to pass two clinical trials, one with the U.S. veteran association in New York, to help it get regulatory approval and ensure health insurance companies can assist customers with the hefty price tag. The company was founded by Amit Goffer, 63, who created a robotic exoskeleton at his previous venture ReWalk Robotics that helps people paralyzed from the waist down to walk. But Goffer, who has been confined to a wheelchair since an allterrain vehicle accident in 1997, has never been able to use his first invention because his injuries left him with limited function in his arms. With his new four-wheel chair, which uses a gyroscope similar to that in a two-wheeled Segway and self-stabilizing software, Goffer can maneuver upright over uneven urban terrain and join conversations face to face with people standing up. “The dignity, self esteem ... to feel like part of society again, the core of society, not the fringe of society - the psychological effect is dramatic,” Goffer said. For people with serious spinal cord injuries, the act of standing also helps stave off cardiovascular, respiratory and other problems that can arise, said Gabi Zeilig, director of the neurological rehabilitation department at Israel’s Sheba Medical Center.

“The (UPnRIDE) idea is fascinating,” he said. “There are devices today to move from one place to another, but for short

distances and never on a sloped ground.” In the coming weeks, Zeilig will run a clinical trial of the product while a second study will be done by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in New York, said UPnRIDE Chief Executive Oren Tamari.

He said the key function was UPnRIDE’s ability to adjust and stabilize itself, so no matter what surface angle the device was on, the user would always be upright, maintaining a steady center of gravity and minimizing the risk of falling over. About one percent of the popula-

tion uses a wheelchair, he said, but only 10 percent of that group has the sufficient upper body function to use the ReWalk exoskeleton, so UPnRIDE targets the rest. High-end wheelchairs cost between $15-50,000, Tamari said, and “our target is to be somewhere in the middle”. (rtr)

Farmers look for drinking water for their cattle to remote site

AMLAPURA — Karangasem has the potential to develop cattle breeding. However, ahead of this drought as observation until Friday (Sep. 9) in Karangasem, residents began to face water crisis and they must find enough water to remote locations in order to provide drinking water for their cattle.

Farmers and cattle ranchers at Datah at the foot and the eastern slopes of Mount Agung started to face water crisis like Luh Manis. Thousands of farmers and other cattle ranchers are experiencing similar problems, namely water crisis. Rainwater all this time accommodated in the reservoir begins to dry. Some people have also totally run out of rainwater because their reservoir leaks. They must take water to a fairly remote location. The residents of Bingin Kaler, Juwuk, Kalangsari, Teki, Panglegeha or Bidong, for instance, are facing water crisis. It happens because the water from wells at Kalangsari and Juwuk has been getting smaller from about six months ago. In the meantime, the water in the reservoir of Datah I and II at Kedampal is very limited. To get water, other than waiting for water in both wells at local hamlet, some residents also transport water from public taps in front of the SDN 3 Datah elementary school. The water flows from the Soda springs pipeline network managed by a group of local residents. In the meantime, a legislator of Karangasem from Datah village, Gede Dana, said that the Telaga Waja clean water pipeline project costing hundreds of billions has not been flowing so far. Actually, he said that local residents have longed for the water. Parliament has often urged the government to take advantage of the project. However, until now the follow up is not clear. He promised to struggle in the parliament and ask for the executive to look for a way out what exactly is the problem to the large project remaining uncompleted for seven years. “Residents at villages regularly facing water shortages during dry season hope that Telaga Waja water pipeline project can be soon enjoyed and may not be left dormant,” said Gede Dana. DETROIT — The Chevrolet Bolt, General Motors’ Tesla-fighting electric hatchback for the masses, will be able to go 238 miles (383 kilometers) on a single charge. The car beats the base rearwheel-drive Tesla Model S, which can go 210 miles (336 kilometers) per charge but costs about $28,500 more. The Bolt goes on sale later this year for about $37,500 before a $7,500 federal electric vehicle tax credit. It’s the first mass-market electric vehicle to cross the 200mile (322-kilometer) range, a range that will meet or exceed almost every person’s daily driving needs. GM says the Bolt’s range was determined in testing by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It takes 9.3 hours to recharge a Bolt

from near empty on a 240-Volt home charger, the company said. The Bolt also will be able to get software fixes over the internet, Pam Fletcher, GM’s executive chief engineer for electric vehicles, said at a recent conference. Tesla’s lowest-cost Model S is $66,000 before the credit. Late next year, Tesla plans to start selling the more affordable Model 3. At $35,000 before the credit, it will cost less than the Bolt and is expected to go 215 miles (346 kilometers) per charge. Of the three waterfalls, one of which has uniqueness namely three-tiered attraction. He said that so far the three waterfalls have already been visited by travelers, especially young people. The natural potential owned by the three waterfalls makes him plan

to manage the waterfall for tourist attraction. “We are planning to manage the waterfalls in 2017,” he explained. Nevertheless, he admitted that his authority encounters few obstacles to manage the waterfalls. He is planning to open road access to the waterfall so that it is drivable but does not get permission from the Forestry Agency because the path belongs to forest area. However, the agency only allows the village to make trekking paths. “The distance to Tajun waterfall is about 500 meters, while the Bunsalah and Jukwani waterfall is about one kilometer,” he said. HONG KONG - Clashes erupted in a Chinese village known for its grassroots push for democracy after at least 13 people were arrested by the police in pre-dawn raids on Tuesday, according to Hong Kong media and residents. The raids in Wukan fishing village, in the southeast province of Guangdong, came less than a week after a popular and democratically elected village chief, Lin Zuluan, was sentenced to three years imprisonment on graft and other charges. One person in touch with relatives in Wukan told Reuters between 300-400 police were involved in the raids, and many villagers were injured. The person added the village was now in police lockdown, and that internet connections were down. Videos obtained by Hong Kong’s RTHK from villagers show hundreds of police in riot gear confronting at least several dozen villagers marching with Chinese national flags on Tuesday morning. The Hong Kong government-funded radio station and website reported that the police had used tear gas and rubber bullets in the operation. Photos on social media purporting to be from Wukan showed villagers with wounds that appeared to be from rubber bullets. The RTHK footage also showed villages throwing rocks at huddled ranks of police equipped with riot shields. One video obtained by RTHK shows a loud bang and a flash going off near dozens of policemen huddled in formation behind shields. Reuters cannot independently verify the authenticity of the videos. The effect had faded by the start of European trade and the dollar was 0.1 percent higher against both the yen and the euro and 0.2 percent against a basket of currencies. “We’ve had so much information and misinformation (on the chances of a rate rise) that the market is just in wait-and-see mode,” said Neil Mellor, a strategist for Bank of New York Mellon in London. “We’ve had a number of supportive comments from the policy hawks, but they are still struggling to convince the market. China’s economy perks up in August, thanks to housing boom, gov’t spending

Industrial output grew the fastest in five months as demand for products from coal to cars rebounded, though analysts warned the outlook is clouded by weakness in manufacturing investment and a lack of spending by private firms. “It is very clear that the data is improving because of the property market. By speaking up about sex, she hopes to spark discussion on issues such as virginity tests on women who want to join the Indonesia’s military or police force and the ritual of female genital mutilation (FGM). “Your body, your sexual pleasure is your autonomy. The state has nothing to do with it,” said Purwanti, 39, who wrote “The O Project”, a 2010 best-selling book

documenting the sexual experiences of 16 Indonesian women. About 5,000 copies of the Indonesian-language book were snapped up by readers soon after the launch and it was translated into English last year. Indonesia was ranked 92nd out of 145 countries in the World Economic Forum’s 2015 Gender Gap Index after scoring poorly on economic participation and opportunity with data showing 54 percent of women are in the workforce against 86 percent of men. While Indonesia’s economy has raced ahead over the past decade, critics say old-fashioned social attitudes persist and women are often subject to scrutiny about their behaviour. As well as virginity tests and FGM remaining prevalent, Indonesia’s top court is currently hearing a petition from conservative Islamic activists lobbying to outlaw sex outside marriage. Purwanti - whose day job as a development worker includes tackling natural disasters - said her campaign is to push back against Indonesia’s obsession with virginity. Her approach has also attracted the attention of men. Over half her Facebook followers are male. “All this while we have been trying to engage men in women’s movement, it’s very difficult. But when it comes to sex, they are engaged immediately,” laughed Purwanti, who is working on a second book about sex and politics. Since the 2010 book, she has been invited to share her campaign on different stages, including at the Jakarta version of popular speaker series TED Talks and by a top local cosmetics brand. Purwanti, who is also active in the Democratic Party - one of Indonesia’s largest political parties led by ex-president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono - said her party colleagues have called her campaign “bold and wonderful”. HANOI — A Vietnamese court on Monday approved a Malaysian request for the extradition of eight Indonesians suspected of hijacking a Malaysian oil tanker more than a year ago, and rejected a similar request from Indonesia, state media reported. The online newspaper VnExpress said the People’s Court in Hanoi agreed to send the suspects to Malaysia based on laws on mutual legal assistance and criminal procedure. It said the suspects have 15 days to appeal the ruling. Court officials were not immediately available for comment. The eight were arrested in June last year when they arrived on Tho Chu island off Vietnam’s southern coast and admitted that they had hijacked the oil tanker MT Orkim Harmony. Vietnamese officials said at the time that the Indonesians, aged 19 to 61, initially said they encountered an accident at sea while fishing, but after questioning with information provided by Malaysian authorities, they confessed that they were responsible for the hijacking. The ship was carrying 7.5 million liters (2 million gallons) of gasoline worth 21 million ringgit ($5.7 million) and was on its way to Kuantan in Malaysia when communication with it was lost. In the hijacking, 13 Indonesian pirates armed with pistols and machetes took control of the tanker. Eight remained on board while the five others returned to Indonesia on their own boat, possibly to look for buyers of the gasoline. The remaining pirates then abandoned the tanker and fled to Tho Chu island on a life raft. The International Maritime Bureau said last year that attacks on small tankers off Southeast Asia’s coasts have been rising since 2014.(ap)

FLORIDA - The Florida mosque where Omar Mateen, who committed the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, prayed was badly damaged on Monday in an arson attack, investigators said. Mateen was killed by law enforcement officials after killing 49 people and wounding 53 others in a gay nightclub in Orlando in June. Law enforcement officers received reports of flames rising from the Islamic Center of Fort Pierce, located about 100 miles (160 km) southeast of Orlando, at about 12:30 a.m. EDT (0630 GMT), St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Major David Thompson told reporters at a news conference. No one was hurt. The attack occurred on one of the holiest Muslim holidays. Surveillance video showed a white or Hispanic man riding up on a Harley Davidson-style motorcycle, Thompson said. The suspect got off the bike and approached the mosque carrying a bottle of liquid and papers, moments before the blaze erupted, he said. “Immediately after the individual approached, a flash occurred and the individual fled the area,” Thompson said. Investigators have not identified the man, who shook his hand while leaving the area of the flames, indicating that he might have burned himself, Thompson said. MELBOURNE - After controversially missing the Rio Olympics, Nick Kyrgios has pledged his commitment to Australia’s Davis Cup team ahead of their World Group playoff against Slovakia. The 21-year-old firebrand withdrew himself from consideration for the Rio tennis tournament after being publicly upbraided about his conduct by team chef de mission Kitty Chiller. Kyrgios on Tuesday was still battling to shrug off a hip injury which ended his U.S. Open campaign but trained with the team ahead of the weekend’s tie at Sydney’s Ken Rosewall Arena. “I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t want to play,” he told reporters. “I feel ready. I’m playing probably the best tennis I have. “I’ve hit twice since I’ve been here and been going for about an hour to an hour and a half so it’s feeling good and I’m feeling confident with (the injury).” World number 15 Kyrgios was named in the squad for Slovakia and if fit, will play in the singles rubbers with Bernard Tomic, who also withdrew from Rio after a public warning from Chiller. The tennis players had a minor feud in March when Tomic questioned Kyrgios for pulling out of the World Group tie against the United States in Melbourne due to a “flu-like illness”. On Tuesday, each moved to allay concerns about any lingering bad blood. “He’s a great player, with great potential and doing great things,” Kyrgios said of world number 21 Tomic, who crashed out of the U.S. Open in the first round and was heavily fined for a crude outburst directed at a heckler in the crowd. Sp rt Abby Wambach: I abused alcohol, prescription drugs for years

Abby Wambach says she abused alcohol and prescription drugs for years until her arrest for driving under the influence in April. “I was stubborn and I was in denial,” soccer’s most prolific international goal scorer told The Associated Press in a phone interview. “I didn’t want to face the truth.” In “Forward,” her memoir set for release on Tuesday, the retired U.S. national team star recounts her career, from the lows of losing her high school championship to the highs of winning the Women’s World Cup last year. She also chronicles her high-profile marriage to fellow soccer player Sarah Huffman and the struggles they faced. And she tells of her bouts with vodka and pills, which included Vicodin, Ambien and Adderall. Chapters in the book are words that she has been labeled: tomboy, captain, lesbian, and yes, addict. “That night getting arrested was one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Because if I don’t get so publicly shamed and publicly humiliated, I don’t think I wake up,” she said as she prepared for a book tour. “I think I was asleep for a lot of years. Asleep to the pleas from my family and friends, and even myself, to get help. So that night I was humiliated enough to wake up.” With 184 goals, Wambach is the leading career scorer — male or female — in international soccer. She retired in December after 15 years with the U.S. women’s national team. She says she has been sober since the night she was pulled over in Portland, Oregon, after dinner with friends. It was her rock bottom: Her mugshot was everywhere the next morning. This was not what she imagined her legacy to be. Wambach said that night was a culmination of events as her life spiraled out of control. Her marriage was on the rocks, she was wrestling with her retirement and her direction, and she had just taken a new job with ESPN. She issued a statement on Facebook after she was released from jail the next morning, taking full responsibility for her actions and apologizing to her friends, family and fans. In the aftermath, MINI USA withdrew her from its advertising. She pleaded guilty, agreeing to enter a diversion program for first-time offenders that included treatment. In the book, she never pins down a moment that alcohol and drugs started to become a problem. Like so many who have shared her experience, it developed over time. Those closest to her tried to reach out, including Huffman, fellow national team player Sydney Leroux and friend Kara Mirarchi. “Not only was I hiding this secret from the world for so long, so were the people that I loved — they loved me so fiercely they wanted to protect me as much as possible, almost from myself. Sarah was definitely one of my saving graces because she was one of the first people in my life who made me aware of the problems that I was having,” Wambach said. “And this was years

ago. This isn’t something that just snuck up on me when I retired from soccer. This is something I’ve been dealing with for years now.” Wambach capped her illustrious career with the sport’s most prestigious championship when the United States defeated Japan 5-2 in Canada last summer for the Women’s World Cup. It was the third World Cup title for the U.S. women and first since 1999. The FIFA World Player of the Year in 2012, Wambach appeared in four World Cups with the national team. She also has a pair of Olympic gold medals from the 2004 Games in Athens and the 2012 Games in London. She did not compete in the Beijing Games because of a broken leg. Wambach announced her retirement last October and played her last match with the team in December, a 1-0 victory tour loss to China in New Orleans. She said she looks back at pictures from that game and her eyes seem hollow. Wambach became more active tackling social and political issues in the later years of her career, and has been outspoken about gender equity in particular. She led a group of players in protesting FIFA’s decision to play the 2015 World Cup on artificial turf, which is considered by many to be inferior to grass. In retirement, she has campaigned for Hillary Clinton for president. She also has a weekly podcast and other work for ESPN. But most importantly, she’s working on becoming a “whole human being” now that she’s not numbing herself. Wambach and Huffman, whose kiss following the World Cup victory became one of the most memorable photos of the tournament, could not work out their differences and are divorcing. In her interview with the AP, Wambach was far less guarded than she’d been in past conversations. After earlier this year proclaiming “I don’t get nervous,” her emotions were more on the surface as she sincerely admitted her foibles. “It’s really hard to talk about things when you’re ashamed,” she said. “And I’m not ashamed about what happened to me anymore because it led me to where I’m at right now. ATHENS — The favorite to become UEFA president has criticized the secret deal - accelerated ahead of Wednesday’s election - guaranteeing four Champions League group-stage places for Europe’s top four leagues. In an interview with The Associated Press, Aleksander Ceferin expressed frustration UEFA caved into the demands of powerful clubs from Spain, Germany, England, and Italy. Those countries are guaranteed 16 Champions League places from 2018-21, rather than 11 currently — squeezing teams from lower-ranked leagues like Ceferin’s Slovenia. “The problem is we didn’t know anything that was going on — that shouldn’t happen again,” Ceferin said in Athens on Tuesday. “It’s not frustrating just for me; it’s frustrating for all 55 national associations. “The process was not OK because it was not communicated well. Nobody knew what is going on. There was a group who decided, and the lack of communication is the main problem why clubs and national associations are mad now.” The current qualification system, which makes one of the teams from the English Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, and Serie A contest a playoff to reach the Champions League group stage, is the “ideal model,” Ceferin said. But UEFA announced in August the new deal, which assists more powerful teams, after months of talks with the influential European Club Association, whose members raised a longstanding threat of breaking away to form a closed Super League dominated by the rich and storied elite. Ceferin, who is seeking to complete the presidential term of the banned Michel Platini until 2019, warned that “any Super League is out of the question.” “It is a bargaining chip,” said Ceferin, the Slovenian federation president. “I am sure they do not want to leave UEFA and UEFA’s competitions. It would be boring to play in some closed league and it will mean war with UEFA. “They pushed it more because we didn’t have any leadership and that was a problem with UEFA. But at the same time they are very important stakeholders, they bring a lot of money to UEFA, and we have to sit down with them — 55 associations and clubs — and talk about how we should do it in the future.” An ECA document obtained by the AP said “UEFA accelerated the process” in part to “avoid interference with UEFA presidential election process (do not allow the topic to be subject of political capture).” The presidential election in Athens is down to a contest between Ceferin and 68-year-old UEFA vice president Michael van Praag of the Netherlands. The 48-year-old Ceferin said he has the backing of 32 of UEFA’s 55 members to succeed Platini, who has been suspended from UEFA duties since October. “UEFA is not very broken — public opinion is worse than actually UEFA is,” Ceferin said. “We have to work on transparency. We have to adopt term limits for presidents and ExCo (executive committee) members because you cannot stay in a certain position for 20 years. We have seen in the recent past what is happening if you are there for too long. You think you own the organization.” (ap)

LONDON — Tottenham will open its Champions League campaign against Monaco in London, just not at White Hart Lane. Part of Tottenham’s home stadium is currently undergoing construction work, with a section being demolished to make room for a new stadium opening in 2018 adjacent to White Hart Lane. The ground has been deemed unsuitable to host Champions League matches so, although the team is still playing its Premier League games at home, Tottenham will move to Wembley for European action. “It’s going to be an amazing atmosphere and the lads cannot wait to play (on Wednesday),” Tottenham striker Harry Kane said, who

broke a nine-match goal drought in Tottenham’s 4-0 victory over Stoke on Saturday. Wembley has been used as a temporary Champions League stadium in the past. London rival Arsenal was forced to play at Wembley during the 1998-99 and 1999-00 seasons because its former Highbury Stadium did not have a large enough capacity. Arsenal’s record over those two seasons may well worry Spurs fans. Arsenal won only two of its six games at Wembley over the two campaigns, failing to progress from its group on both occasions.
