TORONTO — George Clooney says the political campaign strategist drama “Our Brand Is Crisis” was sitting on the shelf when Sandra Bullock called up with a novel idea: Change the protagonist to a woman, and let her star in it. Clooney and Bullock debuted the David Gordon Green-directed film on Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film, inspired by the 2005 documentary of the same name, is about a fictional political strategist (Bullock) who runs an American-style campaign in a Bolivian election. Though the lead had been written as a man, Bullock said little in the script needed to be altered. “The character is basically the same, other than the sex,” she said

after the film’s premiere. She also ribbed her former “Gravity” co-star, saying it was “a role George could have played, or maybe I could have played it better.” Clooney suggested such gender switches should happen more frequently in Hollywood. “There’s a lot more out there if people just started thinking,” he said to applause. “Our Brand Is Crisis,” which Warner Bros. will release Oct. 30, was produced by Clooney and his

producing partner, Grant Heslov. It drew mixed reviews at its Toronto premiere. One of its scenes prompted Bullock and Clooney to again consider their interchangeability. When the election heats up, Bullock’s character moons the rival campaign from a bus window. DENVER — A former Denver radio personality has filed a lawsuit against singer Taylor Swift, saying he lost his job after being accused of inappropriately touching Swift during a photo session. The lawsuit was filed Thursday in U.S. District court in Denver by David Mueller. The lawsuit says Mueller was falsely accused by one of Swift’s security team of grabbing the singer’s buttocks backstage at the

Pepsi Center on June 2, 2013. It says Mueller was fired two days later from his job at KYGO radio. The lawsuit says Mueller denies inappropriate contact with Swift and noted that he had met many other celebrities without incident. A statement from Swift’s publicist on Saturday says Mueller’s employer was given evidence after the incident and made its own decision on his job status. (ap)

VIENNA, Va. — Kelly Clarkson is canceling several upcoming tour dates this month, saying doctors told her to rest her voice. Clarkson announced the cancellation of performances starting with shows in Vienna, Virginia, on Saturday and on Sunday. She is also canceling shows in Tampa and West Palm Beach, Florida; Raleigh, North Carolina; and Camden, New Jersey. Her tour says all

tickets will be refunded at the original point of purchase. Clarkson tweets that she is “bummed” and “can’t wait to get heathy.” Officials at Wolf Trap in northern Virginia, where Clarkson was set to perform this weekend say all patrons who purchased tickets through Wolf Trap channels are entitled to refunds. Indian police look for man blamed for blast that killed 90

NEW DELHI — Police in central India on Sunday were looking for a man who was being blamed for a massive explosion at a restaurant that killed 90 people, as angry residents protested the way the authorities were handling the case. A cooking gas cylinder exploded at the restaurant Saturday morning, triggering a second blast of mine detonators stored next to the establishment, located in the town of Petlawad in Madhya Pradesh state. The state’s top elected official, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, had to face about 50 angry protesters when he visited the site of the explosions. The protesters, shouting slogans and waving black flags, forced Chouhan to step out of his car and listen to their complaints

against local authorities for failing to enforce safety regulations. Police officer Kamlesh Bamaniya said the protesters were also angry that Petlawad police had failed to arrest Rajendra Kashawa, a contractor who was accused of illegally storing the detonators. Bamaniya said Saturday that Kashawa had died in the explosions. But on Sunday, he said police had information that he was absconding. Police have filed a case of criminal negligence against Kashawa and are looking for him,

Bamaniya said. Kashawa had been given a license to purchase detonators for his business of digging wells, but had stored the detonators illegally in a room adjacent to the restaurant, Bamaniya said. Residents said that they had earlier complained to Petlawad town authorities about Kashawa illegally storing explosives in the building, but that no action was taken against him, television channel CNN-IBN reported. If someone wants to build or renovate a hotel, the size of rooms and facilities has been specified. “If the current rooms are small, when wishing to renovate, rooms, facilities and other supporting facilities must comply with the Mayoral Regulation,” he explained. Deputy Chairman of the Denpasar House Special Committee III, I.B. Ketut Kiana, also acknowledged that there has been no agreement on the

number of rooms in a boarding house that would quality it as a business. He said that discussions on the regional bylaw draft of boarding houses have not been finalised because in the last meeting led by the Chairman of the Special Committee III, I Wayan Suadi Putra, various proposals were brought forth. “Related to the number of room, I propose that any boarding house with more that five rooms be taxed - this would apply to those with 15-20 rooms as well, instead of setting minimum and maximum limits,” he said while reiterating that there has been no agreement on the number of rooms. Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Indonesia to host Interhash 2016

DENPASAR - Indonesia will host the Interhash 2016 scheduled to be held in Bali, Assistant Deputy for Development of Natural and Artificial Tourist Sites of the Ministry of Tourism Aswir Malaon stated.

“Hash is a non-competitive sport that combines the elements of fraternity, entertainment, and fitness,” he noted. He explained that Interhash is a biennial event that has been held since 1978. The venue shifts from one country to another, and the participants are from hash clubs across the world. Earlier, Bali had hosted the Interhash event in 1988. Bali had bidded to host the Interhash event in 2004, 2006, and 2008, but it had not been successful due to certain reasons. Chairperson of Interhash Bali Awie Supriady remarked that the organization is very supportive and enthusiastic about the prestigious events to be held in Bali. “The management and members of the Hash throughout Indonesia have volunteered to host Interhash 2016 under the name of ‘Bali Interhash 2016’,” he stated. It is estimated that about six thousand people from across the world will participate in the Bali Interhash 2016 event. GI ANYAR - The number of tourist arrivals to Bali, from January to August 2015 was the same as or less that last year. Many blame the eruption of Mount Raung that caused Ngurah Rai Airport to shut down several times. “The number of tourist arrivals showed an increase of some four percent between January and August. But, this increase is not comparable to August last year,” said Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), Bali Chapter, Tjokorda Arta Ardana Sukawati. The frequent closure of the airport in July -as a result of the eruption of Mount Raung, caused about 74,000 travelers to camel their flights to Bali, many of whom diverted their visits to tourist attractions in other coun-

tries such as Singapore. “Most tourists only have a one week for their vacation, so they cannot reschedule their holiday. Since their flights to Bali were cancelled, they immediately booked flights to other countries like Singapore to enjoy their vacation,” he explained. This former Regent of Gianyar went on to say that at the beginning of August 2015, tourism operators in Bali thought they might be able to count on tourists from Thailand. Unfortunately this was not so. “Tourists attracting events that were held in August, did not give significantly impact the number of tourist arrivals either,” said Sukawati. Nevertheless, PHRI still hopes that between September and December 2015 the drop in tourist arrivals in Jul and August can be

made up for. “Actually, in June before the eruption of Mount Raung there we were seeing an increase in tourist visits, but given what happened, we can only hope to make up for the shortfall in the next months with the hopes of meeting out targeted number of visitors for this year,” he said. Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the number of foreign tourist arrival to Bali in June 2015 reached 359,702 people, an increase of 21.53 percent compared to May 2015 which only reached 295,973 people. The countries that supplied the most visitors to Bali, were: are Australia (26.32 percent), China (17.83 percent), Singapore (5.44 percent), Malaysia (5.15 percent) and Japan (3.96 percent). (kmb35)

An official with the aviation agency, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the matter, said the cause of the crash Friday that killed two people and seriously injured a third is still under investigation. Those killed were veteran Hollywood pilot Alan Purwin and Venezuelan Carlos Berl, while another American, Jimmy Lee Garland, survived. All were experienced pilots although it’s not clear which of the three were in command of the plane at the time of the crash, the official said. “Jimmy is the black box right now so we need to talk to him to find out what happened,” the official said. TABANAN - There were two dog bite cases involving rabid over the course of two days. One in East Selemadeg and the other in West Selemadeg. These are the first rabies cases to be reported in these subdistricts in 2015. The first rabies dog bite case occurred on Sunday (Sep. 6) at Mundeh Kangin village. The victim, 7 year old Kadek Agus Pranata, was bitten on his head, back and right ear. His mother, Wayan Sumartini, when contacted on Wednesday (Sep. 9) explained that her son was bitten by a dog while playing ball in her home yard. “The dog suddenly came and bit my son,” she said. After being bitten, the family brought him to the nearest health center to have his wounds treated. Kadek was given and anti- rabies vaccine (VAR) and a sample of the dog’s brain was taken to the lab for exami-

nation and tested positive to rabies. Kadek’s mother said that many dogs roam freely in their neighbourhood. She hopes that there will be further measures taken to prevent such incidents, such as dog vaccinations and eliminations of stray dogs. As for the dog bite case in East Selemadeg on Tuesday (Sep. 8), a resident of Serampingan Kaja, Megati, 32 year old Kadek Nuryanti, was bitten in the leg. Bid to shut Guantanamo roils Pentagon, White House, Congress

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration’s struggling quest to close the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, is mired in state and federal politics. Frustrated White House and Pentagon officials are blaming one another for the slow progress releasing approved detainees and finding a new prison to house those still held. Defense Secretary Ash Carter is facing criticism from some administration officials who complain that he has not approved enough transfers, even though 52 Guantanamo detainees are eligible. Carter’s predecessor, Chuck Hagel, was forced from the Pentagon job in part because the White House felt he was not moving quickly enough to send detainees to other countries. Two officials said the White House is frustrated because President Barack Obama discussed the issue with Carter when he was appointed this year to lead the Defense Department, and they believed Carter was on board with the White House’s plans to act faster. Other U.S. officials note that Carter has approved some transfers and is pushing his staff to move

quickly to get more to his desk. But many other proposed transfers are slogging through the bureaucracy, under review by a long list of defense, military, intelligence and other administration offices. The transfers cannot be approved unless officials believe the detainees will not return to terrorism or the battlefield upon release and that there is a host country willing to take them. Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook issued a statement Saturday saying that Carter shares Obama’s commitment to closing the detention facility responsibly and has been working “deliberately and diligently” on a comprehensive plan. “Working with our interagency partners and Congress, his top priority has been and will continue

From a peak of 680 prisoners, 116 remain. Finding acceptable places for them has been an intractable problem. “Finding a solution for these individuals involves complicated negotiations with international partners, extensive consultations with the leaders of the national security and legal organizations and final approval by me,” Carter told reporters. Eurogroup chief rules out Greek debt deal renegotiation

BRUSSELS — The head of the euro currency group of countries has ruled out any renegotiation of the massive loan program meant to save Greece’s economy, a week ahead of general elections there. Greeks go to the polls on Sept. 20 with former prime minister Alexis Tsipras seeking a stronger mandate to implement unpopular reforms needed to secure the 86 billion euros ($97 billion) rescue program. Eurogroup chief Jeroen Dijsselbloem said Saturday that renegotiation is “not possible” regardless of who wins “so work must continue” on reforms required to secure the loans. Speaking after chairing a meeting of the 19-nation currency bloc, he said that finance ministers had not discussed any debt relief for Greece. The International Monetary Fund insists on Greek debt relief before taking part in any new bailout. (ap)

US budget deficit drops to $64.4 billion in August

WASHINGTON — The federal government ran up a much smaller budget deficit in August than a year ago, remaining on track to record the smallest annual deficit in eight years. The Treasury Department said Friday that the deficit in August totaled $64.4 billion, a drop of 50 percent from the same month a year ago. Much of that improvement reflected quirks in timing related to the calendar. Some $42 billion in August benefit payments were made in July because Aug. 1 fell on a Saturday. Through the first 11 months of this budget year ending Sept. 30, the deficit is running 10 percent below last year’s level. The Congressional Budget Office is forecasting that the deficit for the full year will drop to $426 billion, down 11.8 percent from the previous year as a stronger economybrings in more tax revenue. The 2014 deficit was an improvement from a deficit of $679.5 billion in 2013. For the four years before 2013, the deficit ballooned to annual deficits above $1 trillion, reflecting a deep recession that cut into tax revenues and expanded government spending on such programs as unemployment benefits and a stimulus package aimed at jump-starting growth. Through the first 11 months of this year, government revenues total $2.88 trillion, up 8 percent from the same period a year ago. Government spending over the past 11 months is up 4.8 percent to $3.41 trillion. The CBO’s forecast of a 2015 deficit of $426 billion would be the lowest imbalance since the deficit stood considerably lower at $160.7 billion in 2007. The huge deficits over the past eight years pushed the national debt up to a current level of $18.1 trillion, $25 million below the current debt limit set by Congress. Since March, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew has been employing emergency measures to keep the government from going over the debt limit. (ap)

Balkan immigrant rail tracks follow old Orient Express route GEVGELIJA — There are no fancy dining carriages here, glasses of champagne or ace sleuth Hercule Poirot to solve a murder mystery. There are only hundreds of exhausted people crammed inside a dingy train, slowly moving along the same Balkan route where the legendary Orient Express used to rumble. Day or night, rain or sunshine, tens of thousands of people are walking along Balkan train tracks or packing train carriages along the same famed rail line that used to connect Europe with Turkey and on to the Middle East. Whether in Turkey, Greece, Macedonia or Serbia, those fleeing their homelands have been following the tracks so they don’t lose their way in the vast fields and hills. The tracks give them direction and a sense of security. In the 1930s, the Orient Express had a reputation for comfort and luxury, carrying elegant sleeping cars and restaurant cars known for the quality of their cuisine. Royalty, diplomats, business people and the bourgeoisie loved it. “Murder on the Orient Express,” written by Agatha Christie in 1934, celebrated its exotic mystique. Eighty-one years later, it’s a different story. Now carrying desperate families with crying babies fleeing the Middle East, Asia or Africa, the trains rumble through Greece, Serbia and Macedonia with drab, worn carriages, traveling over rusty tracks that have not seen upgrades or so many passengers in decades. On one train, a Syrian girl stuck her uncombed hair through a train window, giggling while hot air swept her face. A man without a leg tried to find a place to sit. One woman tried to put her 10-day-old

baby to sleep, feeling exhausted but happy that she and her husband were getting closer to Germany, while another with two children cried desperately after losing her husband during a chaotic train boarding in a Macedonian town. The ride through Macedonia to the border with Serbia now resembles the Wild West. Those who did not manage to get on a train — and many don’t because thousands are trying to board — try to stop it outside the Macedonian border town of Gevgelija by placing wooden logs or large stones on the tracks. Others simply pull the emergency brakes once the train gets rolling so friends can jump on board. “This is as crazy as in my country,” said Rashid, an immigrant from Pakistan who only gave his first name because he was trying to slip into the European Union. “I never thought I would see something like this in Europe. JAKARTA - Vice President Jusuf Kalla has offered condolences over the hajj pilgrims who were killed when a construction crane fell at Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, on Friday. “Let me extend my deep condolences over the victims of crane collapse at the Masjidil Haram in Mecca,” he said on his Twitter account on Saturday. The accident left 107 people dead and 238 others injured. Among the victims were Indonesian hajj pilgrims. The Indonesian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday two Indonesian hajj pilgrims were killed and 31 others were injured in the accident. “The victims died in two different places. In the Sector 4 the dead victim was identified as Masnauli Sijuadil Hasibuan (59) of flight batch MES and at Ajyad Hospital the dead victim was identified as Iti Rasti binti Darmini (57) of flight batch JKS,” the ministry’s director of Indonesian citizen protection, Lalu Muhammad Iqbal said. “The Indonesian consulate general and the hajj technical staff in Jeddah have been coordinating with the local authorities to ensure that the Indonesians falling victim to the accident are treated well,” he said. JAKARTA - Indonesian police have arrested a man suspected of robbing and strangling a Japanese woman to death in her apartment in Jakarta. The woman identified as Yoshimi Nishimura, 28, was found dead with strangulation marks on her neck at Casa Grande apartment building in south Jakarta on Monday, the capital’s police chief Tito Karnavian told reporters. “There was definitely resistance, but the victim was later strangled and beaten to death,” he said. Police arrested the apartment building’s security guard, Mursalim, 25, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, and who had fled to Sumatra. According to a police statement released on Friday, the suspect had jammed the lock of the door to Nishimura’s apartment by stuffing it with paper and then demanded she hand over her belongings after he helped her to open the door. “His main motive was to take the victim’s belongings,” Karnavian alleged, adding that the items seized included money and mobile phones. “He observed that the woman was living alone which made it easier to rob her,” he added. Mursalim could face the death penalty if found guilty of premeditated murder. An Indonesian court in 2010 sentenced a man to 10 years in prison as an accessory to the murder of a female Japanese tourist on the resort island of Bali. NEW YORK - Flavia Pennetta won her first grand slam singles title over Roberta Vinci in an improbable all-Italian U.S. Open final on Saturday then added one more shock to a stunning fortnight by announcing her retirement. With the 7-6(4) 6-2 win, the 33-year-old Pennetta becomes the fourth oldest grand slam winner in the Open Era and joins 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone as the only Italian women to win a major singles title. But as the celebrations kicked into high gear, Pennetta dropped a bombshell that provided a dramatic finish to the year’s final grand slam and her career. Balkan immigrant rail tracks follow old Orient Express route GEVGELIJA — There are no fancy dining carriages here, glasses of champagne or ace sleuth Hercule Poirot to solve a murder mystery. There are only hundreds of exhausted people crammed inside a dingy train, slowly moving along the same Balkan route where the legendary Orient Express used to rumble. Day or night, rain or sunshine, tens of thousands of people are walking along Balkan train tracks or packing train carriages along the same famed rail line that used to connect Europe with Turkey and on to the Middle East. Whether in Turkey, Greece, Macedonia or Serbia, those fleeing their homelands have been following the tracks so they don’t lose their way in the vast fields and hills. The tracks give them direction and a sense of security. In the 1930s, the Orient Express had a reputation for comfort and luxury, carrying elegant sleeping cars and restaurant cars known for the quality of their cuisine. Royalty, diplomats, business people and the bourgeoisie loved it. “Murder on the Orient Express,” written by Agatha Christie in 1934, celebrated its exotic mystique. Eighty-one years later, it’s a different story. Now carrying desperate families with crying babies fleeing the Middle East, Asia or Africa, the trains rumble through Greece, Serbia and Macedonia with drab, worn carriages, traveling over rusty tracks that have not seen upgrades or so many passengers in decades. JAKARTA - Indonesian police have arrested a man suspected of robbing and strangling a Japanese woman to death in her apartment in Jakarta. The woman identified as Yoshimi Nishimura, 28, was found dead with strangulation marks on her neck at Casa Grande apartment building in south Jakarta on Monday, the capital’s police chief Tito Karnavian told reporters. “There was definitely resistance, but the victim was later strangled and beaten to death,” he said. Police arrested the apartment building’s security guard, Mursalim, 25, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, and who had fled to Sumatra. According to a police statement released on Friday, the suspect had jammed the lock of the door to Nishimura’s apartment by stuffing it with paper and then demanded she hand over her belongings after he helped her to open the door. “His main motive was to take the victim’s belongings,” Karnavian alleged, adding that the items seized included money and mobile phones. “He observed that the woman was living alone which made it easier to rob her,” he added. Mursalim could face the death penalty if found guilty of premeditated murder. An Indonesian court in 2010 sentenced a man to 10 years in prison as an accessory to the murder of a female Japanese tourist on the resort island of Bali. Eurogroup chief rules out Greek debt deal renegotiation

BRUSSELS — The head of the euro currency group of countries has ruled out any renegotiation of the massive loan program meant to save Greece’s economy, a week ahead of general elections there. Greeks go to the polls on Sept. 20 with former prime minister Alexis Tsipras seeking a stronger mandate to implement unpopular reforms needed to secure the 86 billion euros ($97 billion) rescue program. Eurogroup chief Jeroen Dijsselbloem said Saturday that renegotiation is “not possible” regardless of who wins “so work must continue” on reforms required to secure the loans. Speaking after chairing a meeting of the 19-nation currency bloc, he said that finance ministers had not discussed any debt relief for Greece. The International Monetary Fund insists on Greek debt relief before taking part in any new bailout. (ap)

US budget deficit drops to $64.4 billion in August

WASHINGTON — The federal government ran up a much smaller budget deficit in August than a year ago, remaining on track to record the smallest annual deficit in eight years. The Treasury Department said Friday that the deficit in August totaled $64.4 billion, a drop of 50 percent from the same month a year ago. Much of that improvement reflected quirks in timing related to the calendar. Some $42 billion in August benefit payments were made in July because Aug. 1 fell on a Saturday. Through the first 11 months of this budget year ending Sept. 30, the deficit is running 10 percent below last year’s level. The Congressional Budget Office is forecasting that the deficit for the full year will drop to $426 billion, down 11.8 percent from the previous year as a stronger economybrings in more tax revenue. The 2014 deficit was an improvement from a deficit of $679.5 billion in 2013. For the four years before 2013, the deficit ballooned to annual deficits above $1 trillion, reflecting a deep recession that cut into tax revenues and expanded government spending on such programs as unemployment benefits and a stimulus package aimed at jump-starting growth. Through the first 11 months of this year, government revenues total $2.88 trillion, up 8 percent from the same period a year ago. Government spending over the past 11 months is up 4.8 percent to $3.41 trillion. The CBO’s forecast of a 2015 deficit of $426 billion would be the lowest imbalance since the deficit stood considerably lower at $160.7 billion in 2007. The huge deficits over the past eight years pushed the national debt up to a current level of $18.1 trillion, $25 million below the current debt limit set by Congress. Since March, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew has been employing emergency measures to keep the government from going over the debt limit. (ap)

TABANAN - There were two dog bite cases involving rabid over the course of two days. One in East Selemadeg and the other in West Selemadeg. These are the first rabies cases to be reported in these subdistricts in 2015. The first rabies dog bite case occurred on Sunday (Sep. 6) at Mundeh Kangin village. The victim, 7 year old Kadek Agus Pranata, was bitten on his head, back and right ear. His mother, Wayan Sumartini, when contacted on Wednesday (Sep. 9) explained that her son was bitten by a dog while playing ball in her home yard. “The dog suddenly came and bit my son,” she said. After being bitten, the family brought him to the nearest health center to have his wounds treated. Kadek was given and anti- rabies vaccine (VAR) and a sample of the dog’s brain was taken to the lab for exami-

Bid to shut Guantanamo roils Pentagon, White House, Congress

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration’s struggling quest to close the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, is mired in state and federal politics. Frustrated White House and Pentagon officials are blaming one another for the slow progress releasing approved detainees and finding a new prison to house those still held. Defense Secretary Ash Carter is facing criticism from some administration officials who complain that he has not approved enough transfers, even though 52 Guantanamo detainees are eligible. Carter’s predecessor, Chuck Hagel, was forced from the Pentagon job in part because the White House felt he was not moving quickly enough to send detainees to other countries. Two officials said the White House is frustrated because President Barack Obama discussed the issue with Carter when he was appointed this year to lead the Defense Department, and they believed Carter was on board with the White House’s plans to act faster. Other U.S. officials note that Carter has approved some transfers and is pushing his staff to move

quickly to get more to his desk. But many other proposed transfers are slogging through the bureaucracy, under review by a long list of defense, military, intelligence and other administration offices. The transfers cannot be approved unless officials believe the detainees will not return to terrorism or the battlefield upon release and that there is a host country willing to take them. Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook issued a statement Saturday saying that Carter shares Obama’s commitment to closing the detention facility responsibly and has been working “deliberately and diligently” on a comprehensive plan. “Working with our interagency partners and Congress, his top priority has been and will continue

to be the safety and security of the American people,” Cook said. During his two years as Pentagon chief, Hagel approved 44 detainee transfers. Carter, in his first seven months, has transferred six. Obama has promised to close the facility since he was a presidential candidate in 2008. He said it ran counter to American values to keep people in prison, many without criminal charges or due process. Opponents have argued the detainees are essentially prisoners of war. From a peak of 680 prisoners, 116 remain. Finding acceptable places for them has been an intractable problem. “Finding a solution for these individuals involves complicated negotiations with international partners, extensive consultations with the leaders of the national security and legal organizations and final approval by me,” Carter told reporters. Indonesia to host Interhash 2016

DENPASAR - Indonesia will host the Interhash 2016 scheduled to be held in Bali, Assistant Deputy for Development of Natural and Artificial Tourist Sites of the Ministry of Tourism Aswir Malaon stated.

“Hash is a non-competitive sport that combines the elements of fraternity, entertainment, and fitness,” he noted. He explained that Interhash is a biennial event that has been held since 1978. The venue shifts from one country to another, and the participants are from hash clubs across the world. Earlier, Bali had hosted the Interhash event in 1988. Bali had bidded to host the Interhash event in 2004, 2006, and 2008, but it had not been successful due to certain reasons. GI ANYAR - The number of tourist arrivals to Bali, from January to August 2015 was the same as or less that last year. Many blame the eruption of Mount Raung that caused Ngurah Rai Airport to shut down several times. “The number of tourist arrivals showed an increase of some four percent between January and August. But, this increase is not comparable to August last year,” said Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), Bali Chapter, Tjokorda Arta Ardana Sukawati. The frequent closure of the airport in July -as a result of the eruption of Mount Raung, caused about 74,000 travelers to camel their flights to Bali, many of whom diverted their visits to tourist attractions in other coun-

tries such as Singapore. “Most tourists only have a one week for their vacation, so they cannot reschedule their holiday. Since their flights to Bali were cancelled, they immediately booked flights to other countries like Singapore to enjoy their vacation,” he explained. This former Regent of Gianyar went on to say that at the beginning of August 2015, tourism operators in Bali thought they might be able to count on tourists from Thailand. Unfortunately this was not so. “Tourists attracting events that were held in August, did not give significantly impact the number of tourist arrivals either,” said Sukawati. Nevertheless, PHRI still hopes that between September and December 2015 the drop in tourist arrivals in Jul and August can be

made up for. “Actually, in June before the eruption of Mount Raung there we were seeing an increase in tourist visits, but given what happened, we can only hope to make up for the shortfall in the next months with the hopes of meeting out targeted number of visitors for this year,” he said. Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the number of foreign tourist arrival to Bali in June 2015 reached 359,702 people, an increase of 21.53 percent compared to May 2015 which only reached 295,973 people. The countries that supplied the most visitors to Bali, were: are Australia (26.32 percent), China (17.83 percent), Singapore (5.44 percent), Malaysia (5.15 percent) and Japan (3.96 percent). (kmb35)

Deputy Chairman of the Denpasar House Special Committee III, I.B. Ketut Kiana, also acknowledged that there has been no agreement on the

number of rooms in a boarding house that would quality it as a business. He said that discussions on the regional bylaw draft of boarding houses have not been finalised because in the last meeting led by the Chairman of the Special Committee III, I Wayan Suadi Putra, various proposals were brought forth. “Related to the number of room, I propose that any boarding house with more that five rooms be taxed - this would apply to those with 15-20 rooms as well, instead of setting minimum and maximum limits,” he said while reiterating that there has been no agreement on the number of rooms. Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

TORONTO — George Clooney says the political campaign strategist drama “Our Brand Is Crisis” was sitting on the shelf when Sandra Bullock called up with a novel idea: Change the protagonist to a woman, and let her star in it. Clooney and Bullock debuted the David Gordon Green-directed film on Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film, inspired by the 2005 documentary of the same name, is about a fictional political strategist (Bullock) who runs an American-style campaign in a Bolivian election. DENVER — A former Denver radio personality has filed a lawsuit against singer Taylor Swift, saying he lost his job after being accused of inappropriately touching Swift during a photo session. The lawsuit was filed Thursday in U.S. District court in Denver by David Mueller. The lawsuit says Mueller was falsely accused by one of Swift’s security team of grabbing the singer’s buttocks backstage at the

Pepsi Center on June 2, 2013. It says Mueller was fired two days later from his job at KYGO radio. The lawsuit says Mueller denies inappropriate contact with Swift and noted that he had met many other celebrities without incident. NEW DELHI — Police in central India on Sunday were looking for a man who was being blamed for a massive explosion at a restaurant that killed 90 people, as angry residents protested the way the authorities were handling the case. A cooking gas cylinder exploded at the restaurant Saturday morning, triggering a second blast of mine detonators stored next to the establishment, located in the town of Petlawad in Madhya Pradesh state. The state’s top elected official, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, had to face about 50 angry protesters when he visited the site of the explosions. The protesters, shouting slogans and waving black flags, forced Chouhan to step out of his car and listen to their complaints

against local authorities for failing to enforce safety regulations.
