Bagir Manan : Journalists must keep on fighting IBP/Yudi Karnaedi

In the development of technology and the increasing function of press, the role of journalist is expected to stay on the right course. The journalist must keep on doing their function as the voice of the helpless, against all kind of stereotype, and supporting differences. The statement was said by the head of Press Council Bagir Manan on the Opening Ceremony of the first Indonesia Chief Editor Forum which was held on Thursday, June 13, in Nusa Dua. He said that the forum will become the addition of other press forum. He hoped that the forum will give positive contribution to the development of media and also toward the nation. Bagir emphasized on the

importance of the role of journalist. “I hope that the role of journalist will never change in the development of technology,” he added. Bagir also said that the forum must be able to give positive input

to the government. The event itself is joined by around 350 participants from all around Indonesia. Meanwhile, the head of the committee Muhammad Ikhsan said that the background of the event is the growing economy in Indonesia. Furthermore, the freedom of press is also must be maintained properly. For that reason, the chief editors must discuss the matter so the economic growth can be utilized. There will be signing of pledge to develop a stronger Indonesia. While the head of Chief Editor Forum Wahyu Muryadi said that

the forum is the very first time to discuss the problems that emerge in the past few years. “The event is thinking about ourselves or press and the commitment for the country,” he added. The event will be held for 2 days and will be closed today. The topics of the event are bank, infrastructure, food, energy, and information and technology. The discussion will also about economics with a few speakers such as Surya Paloh (Metro TV), Agung Prasetio (CEO Kompas Gramedia Group), Fikri Jufri (Tempo), Sukamto Hartono (SCTV), and

Dahlan Iskan (Jawa Pos). Wahyu explained that Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Ydhoyono will be present today to do a dialog with the participants. The president is also the main speaker during the second day of the event. “The President said that he is very enthusiastic to join the event,” he added. Several Ministers is also scheduled to speak in the forum. The discussion is focusing on the steps taken by the leaders to make a stronger Indonesia. For that reason the chief editors agreed to support and guide the action plans. (kmb18)
