In the development of technology and the increasing function of press, the role of journalist is expected to stay on the right course. The journalist must keep on doing their function as the voice of the helpless, against all kind of stereotype, and supporting differences. The statement was said by the head of Press Council Bagir Manan on the Opening Ceremony of the first Indonesia Chief Editor Forum which was held on Thursday, June 13, in Nusa Dua. He said that the forum will become the addition of other press forum. He hoped that the forum will give positive contribution to the development of media and also toward the nation. Bagir emphasized on the
importance of the role of journalist. “I hope that the role of journalist will never change in the development of technology,” he added. Bagir also said that the forum must be able to give positive input
to the government. The event itself is joined by around 350 participants from all around Indonesia. Meanwhile, the head of the committee Muhammad Ikhsan said that the background of the event is the growing economy in Indonesia. Furthermore, the freedom of press is also must be maintained properly. For that reason, the chief editors must discuss the matter so the economic growth can be utilized. There will be signing of pledge to develop a stronger Indonesia. While the head of Chief Editor Forum Wahyu Muryadi said that
the forum is the very first time to discuss the problems that emerge in the past few years. “The event is thinking about ourselves or press and the commitment for the country,” he added. The event will be held for 2 days and will be closed today. The topics of the event are bank, infrastructure, food, energy, and information and technology. The discussion will also about economics with a few speakers such as Surya Paloh (Metro TV), Agung Prasetio (CEO Kompas Gramedia Group), Fikri Jufri (Tempo), Sukamto Hartono (SCTV), and
Dahlan Iskan (Jawa Pos). Wahyu explained that Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Ydhoyono will be present today to do a dialog with the participants. The president is also the main speaker during the second day of the event. “The President said that he is very enthusiastic to join the event,” he added. Several Ministers is also scheduled to speak in the forum. The discussion is focusing on the steps taken by the leaders to make a stronger Indonesia. Bali News Prostitutes suspected to migrate to Buleleng Singaraja (Bali Post)—
The closure of numerous commercial sex worker (PSK) localizations in some cities outside Bali was suspected to have an impact on the development of entertainment sector in Buleleng. As a result, the prostitutes or comfort girls that had lost their jobs migrated to several regions, including Bali and Buleleng. It was announced by Chairman of the AIDS Prevention Commission (KPA) Buleleng doubling as Deputy Regent of Buleleng, Nyoman Sutjidra, in the opening of the revitalization training for Supervising Teachers Forum (FGP) for Student Group Caring for HIV/AIDS and Drugs (KSPAN) at the Lakshmi Graha Women’s Building in Singaraja, Wednesday (Jun 12). According to Sutjidra, closing operation of the localizations in the cities such as Bandung and Surabaya had resulted in the migration flow to some regions of the comfort women, including to Bali, where most of them were HIV positive. He added the prostitutes were very difficult to be distinguished whether they had been exposed to HIV or not. Moreover, those women worked as lady escort in dimly lit cafés or in certain places. To that end, he left a message to all stakeholders including the community leaders to take an active role in keeping the area from the transmission of HIV/AIDS. He also explained that most people living with HIV/AIDS belonged to productive age, between 20 to 40 years. Therefore, it was the duty of all parties such as parents and teachers at school to refresh the memory and disseminate the hazards of the incurable HIV/AIDS. Moreover, in Buleleng County was reported that 1,694 people had been affected by HIV/AIDS up to April. “On that account, the role of KSPAN at each school in each subdistrict is highly expected to make synergy with the local government as well as the NGOs, community leaders and media to actively promote the impact caused by the incurable HIV/ AIDS,” he said. Terminal taken advantage for parking trucks DESTINY of three terminals in Tabanan is truly apprehensive. Since the past three years, these public facilities have relied on students and vegetable traders as their passenger. As a result, the income of urban public transportation and rural transportation continued to decline. Due to being deserted of passengers, the three terminals are all dead faint. Being so deserted, the terminals even turn into prostitution area. The three terminals in Tabanan are respectively the Pesiapan, Kediri and Tuakilang. Of the three, the Pesiapan Terminal lies in the category B, while the remaining two terminals belong to category C. The three terminals serve both urban and rural routes. Decline in passenger traffic is complained by urban transport drivers. They claimed the interests of people to utilize public transport had decreased since 2000. As the impact, more than 20 public transports had stopped operating.
“In the past, there were 84 public transports, while today they only remain 64 units. Moreover, they rarely operate,” said one of the public transport drivers at Pesiapan Terminal, Wednesday (Jun 12). The man claimed that the driver could only get income of IDR 20,000 per day. Even, it only happened during school days, while on school holidays they got no passenger. All this time, the drivers only relied on the students for their passengers, while the remaining was vegetable traders. Though only earning mediocre income, a number of public transport drivers were still desperate to survive because they had no another job. Meanwhile, amidst the lonely passenger, the Pesiapan Terminal remains to show off little activities. One of them is serving as the marketplace of vegetable trade. Besides, it is also taken advantage to park trucks. Almost every day, the terminal nestling at the
west corner of Tabanan town is never lonely with a row of parked trucks. Uniquely, after the day break the terminal looks to remain active with different activity. It is resumed with prostitution located at the stalls of west row. “It is said there is dimly-lit service, but I do not know exactly,” said one of the terminal visitors. The Head of Tabanan Transportation, Communications and Informatics Agency, Made Agus Harta Wiguna, some time ago justified the lack of passengers at Pesiapan Terminal whereas the bus transport actually remained to come into the terminal and served passengers. However, the interest of passengers was still deserted. “As usual, the terminal is still deserted. Instead, it is made vibrant by vehicles of vegetable traders and parking trucks,” he said. After capturing Junaedi as the robber and sexual offender towards Leylani Kate Taylor from Australia, now police has found his jockey initialed KAI as confirmed by Head of Badung Police, GAPC I Komang Suartana last Wednesday (12/6). KAI was captured on Tuesday (11/6) and will have its case developed from Thursday (13/6). According to an officer at Badung Police, KAI was the one that drove Junaedi to commit his act and to make sure of KAI involvement; investigators are on the move towards it by investigating the two intensively. As told before, North Kuta Police managed to have captured the robber and sexual offender of Leylani (28) at the Damais Village, North Kuta, Badung named Junaedi (30) is from Darmaji Village, Kopang, Central Lombok in his living place at Kusuma Bangsa IV No. 1C, Room No. 7, Pemecutan Kaja, North Denpasar. President starts working visit to Bali Antara
JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono started his four-day working visit to Bali from June 13-16, 2013 on Thursday. The head of state and his entourage left Halim Perdanakusuma airport here at 11.20 am on Thursday and was scheduled to arrive at Ngurah Rai airport in Bali at around 2 pm local time. “President Yudhoyono starts his working visit to Bali for the Forum of East Asia and Latin American Countries (FEALAC), and then to meet with the chief editors of the media in Indonesia, and to attend cultural parade,” Minister/State Secretary Sudi Silalahi said. He said Indonesia this year hosted the cooperation Forum of East Asia and Latin American Countries. East Asia and Latin American countries contribute 30 percent to the world trade, and 24 percent of foreign direct investment in the world are in FEALAC. Silalahi said the head of state will also open the 35th Bali Art Festival which is to be enlivened by four partner countries namely India, Timor Leste, Japan, and the United States.

Coastal territories ‘run out’ for tourism needs Bali Post
MANGUPURA - Badung County has not owned a water zonation and marine protected areas (KKP) whereas both are very important in reducing the exploitation and development of coastal territories dominated by tourism interests. A legislator of the Badung House, I Made Dharma, claimed to be sad on Wednesday (Jun 12) with the current condition of the coastal territories that were mostly exploited for tourism interests. According to him, the exploitation of coastal territory for tourism had been too long neglected so that the other interests such as for customary, religious, cultural, agricultural and fishery interests seemed to have been given small portion. It seemed the coastal territories were only sold for tourism. This politician from Jimbaran said there was something wrong with the management of coastal territories all this time in Bali especially in Badung. Government gave too great opportunities for the sake of tourism. “The government should not only think and focus on tourism alone. The beach has run out for tourism, either for the accommodation or tourist attraction. Even, when a religious ceremony is held, melasti for example, the solemnity of people is at stake. So, before it is destroyed, the government should immediately react,” he said. He said that government should
immediately set up the zonation of coastal territories. In the zonation set up, the entire community had to be involved so that all aspects and interests could be accommodated and considered. The government should protect the interests of the sector beyond tourism especially with regard to the environmental sustainability, culture and traditional livelihoods through particular zones. Later on, those zones should not even be mixed-up. Meanwhile, the Head of Badung Livestock, Fisheries and Maritime Agency, I Made Badra, said that so far his party remained in the formulation stage of the water zonation and marine protected areas draft. A working group consisting of various components of the community was still working. According to him, the team had been doing a ground check and determined the boundaries of waters. after determining the boundaries, it was resumed with the mapping of waters. “As scheduled, the working group will have a meeting next month to prepare the final report. Having completed the draft, it will be exposed to public,” he said. After getting public approval, in the next process the regent would further prepare and propose the draft to the minister for approval and made a legal instrument. He said the establishment of the KKP had been mandated by the Act No. 27/2007 concerning with the management of coastal territories and small islands. The
water zonation and marine protected areas of Badung County would be completed this year. Meanwhile, regarding to the zonation, Badra claimed to have not had a specific target to complete. According to him, the draft of Badung water zonation had entered the final stage. Zona-
tion team was being stabilized and waiting for the decree of the regent to start working the discussions. He explained further that utilization of waters and coastal territories in Badung would be arranged based on certain zonation, whether it would be for farming,
tourism, culture and others. It would serve as guidelines for the development and spatial plan of coastal territories and prevent the beach from any exploitation of single interest. “We do not want as the current condition where the beach is blocked for a single interest,” he said. (kmb25)

Three Pura at Nyalian robbed Semarapura (Bali Post)Knowing the many pratima (religious statues) stolen already in Klungkung, three temples or Pura at Nyalian Village, Banjarangkan, each Pura Dalem Sila Adri, Pura Subak Puncak Sari and Pura Melanting got robbed as well last Wednesday (11/6). From the action, their pratima layered with gold and diamonds were left not sparkling anymore. One witness, I Dewa Gede Arjana (30) last Thursday stated that around 2.45 pm local time he was about to take a television in the Dalem Sila Adri Temple yet sasw some of the shrines and safe doors opened or damaged. Knowing that, he then told I Dewa Gede Arum (30) and the temple’s elderly which then forwarded to the Banjarangkan Police. After checked by police, a number of gold and diamonds were missing from two rambut sedana statues, two rambut sedana lingsir statues also sacred masks of Rangda. There were also golden flowers weighing three grams, two gold karas, gold diamonds, silver flower weighing six grams also IDR 20,000 from the sesari box missing totaling IDR 16 million loss. Not only here, the same happened to the other two temples. Puncak was known to have been robbed by I Wayan Sukama (45) at 5.50 pm local time where a canting and sangku one had diamonds on it had it scattered under the balai piasan. The incident was then reported to Head I Nyoman Surepo (40) which then to the police with the Head of Village. After checked, nine diamonds totaling IDR 4 million, padma silvers 300 grams totaling IDR 3 million, IDR 300,000 cash from the sesari box, sangku valued IDR 500,000, two bokor valued IDR 1 million and pencanangan from selaka IDR 1 million were missing totaling IDR 10 million loss. In Melanting, NI Ketut Sari (37) was turning on the lights around 7.30 pm local time when she was shocked that the safe place in the temple was opened. Inside everything was a mess and a number of kepeng coins were missing after police have checked it. Head of Klungkung Police Public Relation, APC I Made Sudanta, confirmed that there have been these incidents. The cases are now developed by Banjarangkan and Klungkung Police. Before the case of pratima robbery here was at Pangi Village where they robbed three of nine pura in the complex last 23rd March which are Pura Puseh, Pura Pasek and Pura Tangkas Kori Agung. Pura Sida Rahayu located on the north of IB Mantra By Pass, Banjar Sidayu Tojan, Takmung Vilalge, Banjarangkan was also robbed last 10th April. In the pura a number of pratima taken from the three meters high locked safe. From all the cases, none of its robbers have been captured. From CSA Expo I in Kunming
Heavy Equipment up to snacks from 32 countries on display SINCE stating to open its economy to investment from foreign investors, China really shows a remarkable progress. To demonstrate its seriousness in opening up, the country formerly dubbed as the Bamboo Curtain country held the China-South Asia (CSA) Expo in the Kunming International Convention and Exhibition Center. The first CSA Expo was opened on Thursday (Jun 6) in Kunming, China, while the closing was held on Monday (Jun 10). In the event claimed to be most grandiose in Kunming was exhibited a variety of products ranging from heavy equipment for construction until snack products and accessories from 32 countries. In the opening attended by several leaders from South Asian and African countries, the Deputy Prime Minister of China, Ma Kai, affirmed his commitment to cooperation with the countries in South Asia. He said that China was making improvement and opening up its economy to foreign investment. One of the policies undertaken was establishing a comprehensive partnership with the countries in South Asia. Currently, said Deputy Prime Minister, China had built a railway system connecting China to Vietnam and Bangladesh. He said that South Asia, including the ASEAN member countries, had a great potential of investment and investors that could invest in China. Asia, he added, had been highly regarded in terms of the regional economic growth. As an illustration, the economic cooperation of China with South Asia previously reached approximately USD 4.5 billion, but today had reached around USD 93 billion. “China will continue to open its economy so that it needs a comprehensive and multidimensional cooperation developed to achieve the purpose,” he said. The activity was claimed to be the
largest ever held by China because the expo lasting on June 6-10 simultaneously organized 8 activities at once. Aside from providing many booths, the exhibition was also held at 8 indoor locations and 2 outdoor locations for displaying heavy equipment. It can be imagined how extensive the area to be visited. Even though the area is very vast and can accommodate a variety of products on display, visitors were difficult to move because many people wanted to see the exhibition. As soon as it was opened, visitors had been snaking at the entrance gates. Such condition continued to happen until the closing. Even, the number of visitors was estimated to increase sharply at the closing and caused congestion around the exhibition venue. A variety of automotive products could be found in the exhibition, ranging from cranes to motorcycles. One of the international companies participating in the exhibition was the Tata Group from India. In accordance with the theme wishing to promote the cooperative relations between China and South Asia, the participation of Tata Group drew a great attention. Besides, it also presented an electronic exhibition displaying new products from a variety of countries, ranging from television, computer to mobile phones. Uniquely, the exhibition also presented typical trinkets from various countries becoming the target of visitors. They did not need to visit various countries because in the exhibition had been displayed numerous products characterizing the participating countries. Hotels in Bali remain to serve a few local cuisines Denpasar (Bali Post)— Indonesia has a wealth of traditional cuisines or various archipelagic cuisines that can become the main attraction for tourism development. However, so far the hotel management does not give adequate opportunity for promotion and presentation of the archipelagic or local cuisines. As a result, the local cuisines are not well known by travelers. According to an expert in archipelagic cuisines, William W. Wongso, such condition also happened to hotels in Bali. “We have not found any hotels that have really presented the typical Indonesian menus well.
Presentation of local cuisines at hotel remains very minimal. By all means, it was very ironic because they prefer to present foreign cuisines,” he said, Wednesday (Jun 12). He added that hotel often marginalized the presentation of local cuisines and did not provide enough space for local culinary chef whereas star hotels often brought in chef from Italy, France and Japan to cook food from those countries and passed on their knowledge to the hotel chef. “The hotel should also bring in local culinary chef,” he said. He also asked the hotels to give more spaces as well as more aggressively promote and present the local cuisines where the
hotels operated. Further, he said that traditional cuisines in this archipelago amounted to thousands, but until now the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy had just documented 30 cuisines of the archipelagic icon. Various efforts had been made to introduce or promote the archipelagic cuisines, both at home and overseas. “We hope the 30 archipelagic cuisines can continue to be promoted, both at home and overseas to support the development of local cuisines and tourism,” he said. He hoped the stipulation of 30 archipelagic cuisines, including the twisted satay, could be a guide
and a pilot project to explore and display the culinary peculiarities of each region. “Tourists visiting Bali do not only enjoy the natural and cultural beauty or the others, but also search for the local cuisines. Therefore, local cuisines must be explored and promoted to tourists,” he concluded. An academician and tourism observer from the Bali Tourism Institute (STP) Nusa Dua Bali, Dr. Wisnu Bawa Tarunajaya, said the entrepreneurs in the culinary field and hospitality in Bali should start heavily promoting and offering the local cuisines as an effort to support the local cuisine introduction
to tourists. “Serving traditional cuisines at hotels in Bali remains very rare. The entrepreneurs indeed always think in terms of business and market demand. However, we urge they begin to introduce traditional cuisines because their flavor is not necessarily less competitive against the European cuisines or the others as long as they are processed and presented in an appropriate way,” he said. Tanah Ampo not yet ready berthed by large cruise ships Bali Post
AMLAPURA - The Regent of Karangasem, I Wayan Geredeg, has not dare to target the certain time when the harbor could have been berthed by large cruise ships. Geredeg said on Wednesday (Jun 12) that his party had not thought about the development of casino related to the development of the Tanah Ampo cruise ship harbor in Karangasem. He said that casino was classified into gambling. Therefore, his party should act carefully because casino had not been received by the majority of our society. Actually the casino house like Genting Island was only visited by a few Singaporeans. Indeed, most of the visiting gamblers were strangers, around 60 percent to 70 percent. “We have not thought that far to open a casino, for example, because it belongs to gambling and it is prohibited. However, as a future study, it is required as tourist entertainment, so that we can minimize our foreign exchange from going out. But, it all depends on our readiness when we have been prosperous like Singapore or Malaysia. It opened a casino where the gamblers are not its citizens but foreign citizens,” he said. Regent Geredeg also said there was usually entertainment including casino arena in a large cruise ship owned by foreigners. Since in the large foreignflagged cruise ships there had been such an entertainment, his party did not think of developing a casino at Tanah Ampo cruise harbor. He did not explain when the Tanah Ampo cruise harbor could be operated and could recline directly the cruise’s door to drop off passengers onto the quay floor. He already knew that central government had provided a budget worth IDR 45 billion, but was unclear when the construction would be resumed. However, he said the central government had been moving through the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), where next week it would hold a market sounding. At that time, a number of investors would be invited to be offered the potentials related to the construction and development of the Tanah Ampo cruise ship harbor. He said a lot of potentials could be worked on in relation to the harbor development. However, it was admitted that not all of them would want and have an interest. Whoever won the tender, the investor was obliged to cooperate with the PT Karangasem Sejahtera, a regional enterprise that would manage the harbor. (013)

SYDNEY - Tibetans setting themselves on fire to protest against Chinese rule are having little effect on Beijing’s policies, exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama said on Thursday, while urging China to look harder at the reasons behind the incidents. At least 117 Tibetans have set themselves alight in protest against Chinese rule since 2009, mostly in heavily Tibetan areas of Sichuan, Gansu and Qinghai provinces rather than in what China terms the Tibet Autonomous Region. Most have died. “It’s a sad thing that happens. Of course it’s very very sad. In the meantime, I express I doubt how much effect (there is) from such drastic actions,” the Dalai Lama told reporters during a visit to Australia. A Chinese official in March accused the Dalai Lama of providing money to encourage people to set themselves on fire, and said there was evidence to prove the Nobel Peace Prize laureate was orchestrating the self-immolations. Dalai Lama, 77, has called the acts “understandable,” but says he does not encourage them. Several Tibet scholars have criticized his stance, saying his reluctance to tell his people to stop has strengthened their resolve to continue the fiery protests. China has tightened already strict controls in Tibet since the self-immolations began two years and has all but banned visits by foreign journalists. Tibet has also been a cause of diplomatic friction, especially with the United States, where meetings between the Dalai Lama and U.S. presidents have infuriated China. The U.S. State Department has urged China to allow Tibetans to “express grievances freely”, while calling on Tibetans to “end selfimmolations”.
JOHANNESBURG — Former President Nelson Mandela began responding better to treatment Wednesday morning for a recurring lung infection following “a difficult last few days,” South Africa’s president said. President Jacob Zuma told parliament that he is happy with the progress that the 94-year-old is making following his hospitalization on Saturday. Mandela spent a fifth straight day Wednesday in a Pretoria hospital, where he was visited by one of his daughters and two granddaughters. Zuma noted that Wednesday marked the 49th anniversary of the sentencing of Mandela to life in prison in 1964. He said “our thoughts” are with Mandela and his family “on this crucial historical anniversary.” “We are very happy with the progress that he is now making following a difficult last few days,” Zuma said. “We appreciate the messages of support from all over the world.” Zuma on Wednesday applauded the legacy of Mandela and other antiapartheid activists. South Africa’s government disbanded its official policy of apartheid — racial segregation and discrimination — in 1994. “Our country is a much better place to live in now than it was before 1994, even though we still have so much work to do,” Zuma said. Mandela, the leader of South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement, spent 27 years in prison during white racist rule. It’s all emblematic of the continued troubles plaguing the Holy See’s financial system, rocked by allegations of incompetence and corruption. But the new president of the Vatican bank, while acknowledging the delays and losses stemming from the credit card shutdown, is brushing off the fiasco. “So sales will be up in the second half of the year,” Ernst von Freyberg told the AP in an interview, laughing. The truth is, however, that the credit card woes represent yet another headache for the Vatican as it works to improve its reputation internationally through a painful transition to financial transparency in the fight against money laundering. In an interview this week, von Freyberg revealed that he was weighing whether to introduce some sort of tax reporting obligations on the bank — known as the Institute for Religious Works — to stem accusations that it’s a tax haven. “It may well be that having done a thorough legal review,” von Freyberg said, “I come to the conclusion that we should pay more proactive attention to it.”

VALENTINO Rossi says it is imperative to fight back from his first-lap crash at Mugello and end a string of poor results in MotoGP’s forthcoming race at Barcelona. Since scoring a podium in the first grand prix of his Yamaha return at Qatar, Rossi has come home inside the top five just once, at Jerez. He has also crashed twice in the past two races. At Le Mans he was able to recover to 12th, but at Mugello he suffered an early exit after making contact with Alvaro Bautista heading into Turn 3, Poggia Secco, on the opening lap. Team-mate Jorge Lorenzo meanwhile took a dominant win, and with it moved onto 91 points, almost double Rossi’s total. “The Barcelona race will be very important, especially after recent results,” Rossi said. “I want to get on the podium in Spain. “For a few days after I had the crash at Mugello, I hurt everywhere. “Fortunately I was able to start training immediately and I did not waste any time. “It will be very important to make a good qualifying [in Spain] and start from the front.” Yamaha team director Massimo Meregalli backed Rossi to arrest his recent slide, adding: “Valentino needs a good result here as he has had some bad luck in the last two races. “We are ready for him to recover what he has lost over the last two rounds and perform as we know he can in Catalunya.”
Parker has mild hamstring strain, hopeful for Gm 4 Associated Press Writer SAN ANTONIO — Tony Parker, along with all of San Antonio, spent a restless night worrying about a right hamstring that hampered him in Game 3 of the NBA Finals and threatened the momentum the Spurs seized with a drubbing of the Miami Heat. A day later, Parker said he got some good news. Just how good the news is probably won’t be known until Game 4 begins on Thursday night. Parker had an MRI on Wednesday that revealed a Grade 1 strain of his hamstring, the mildest level of strain. BRASILIA, Brazil — Brazil is a year from the World Cup, admitting to mistakes in its preparations but vowing to be ready in time. After facing difficulties getting its stadiums ready for the Confederations Cup, the warmup tournament that begins in Brasilia on Saturday, Brazil is promising that things will be different ahead of the World Cup. FIFA said it won’t accept it any other way, and Brazilian authorities and local organizers say the delays that plagued construction work before the Confederations Cup won’t be an issue next year. A clock displaying the countdown to the World Cup was unveiled on Wednesday at Copacabana Beach in the presence of FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke, World Cup ambassador Pele and local organizers. “This is another memorable milestone in our preparations for Brazil 2014,” said local World Cup organizing committee president Jose Maria Marin. “It’s a reminder that the big event is just round the corner. In 12 months’ time we’ll be staging a football
festival involving teams from 32 countries and fans from the four corners of the globe.” Brazil just barely got six stadiums ready for the Confederations Cup. Only two of them were completed by the original deadline in December, and in some cases there was time for only one test event before the venues hosted official matches in the tournament for continental champions. That was what happened in Brasilia and in Rio de Janeiro, home of the final at the renovated Maracana Stadium on June 30. “I do believe we could have delivered them sooner to allow for the realization of more test events, which could have anticipated some of the problems that arose during those test events,” Brazil Sports Minister Aldo Rebelo said. “Apart from that, I believe that all requirements were executed in accordance with expectations and that we will have a Confederations Cup that will be held as expected.”

Apart from that macro-prudential policies would also be prepared to prevent increasing excessive risks in certain sectors, he said. Coordination with the government would also be strengthened with focus put on efforts to minimize potential inflationary pressures to maintain macro-economic and financial stability, he added. Agus said BI had also decided to maintain the deposit facility rate and the lending rate at respectively 4.25 percent and 6.75 percent.

Many subsidy incentives for housing still off targets Antara
JAKARTA - Vice President Boediono said many housing subsidies provided by the government in various forms of incentives for developers were still off targets because they were not enjoyed by poor families but by middle income people. “The government has provided various forms of assistance by extending subsidies but they are not received by the correct people,” the Vice President said while opening the Fourth National Working Meeting of the Indonesian Housing and Resettlement Developers Association (Apersi) at the Vice Presidential Palace here on Thursday. The opening of the Apersi national working meeting was also attended by Public Housing Minister Djan Faridz, Apersi Chairman Eddy Ganefo and Apersi provincial executives.
Boediono said that many of the Indonesian people were now entering the middle class who had money and purchased houses which should be have allocated to the needy. He said that the middle income people purchased houses not for residing but for investment. “They think it is better for them to buy houses as investment than saving money in deposit form so that the housing purpose misses the target,” the Vice President said. Boediono also touched on the Jakarta regional government’s efforts to build flat houses but it turned out that they were not bought and resided by people who really needed them. “There are owners who sell or rent their flats to other people,” said Boediono. He said that the government would continue to support the
efforts made by Apesi to provide housing for poor people. Eddy Ganefo said Apersi was a housing and resettlement developers association which provides 90 percent of its houses for lowincome people. “We have endlessly developed houses for low-income people. All poor families should have their own houses,” Eddy said. In the current national working meeting, Apersi is determined to become a pillar for developers who build houses for the poor. We also appreciate the housing minister who up to now had issued a very good regulation for the people in lower the income bracket. One of the constraints faced by Apersi members in developing houses is the price of lands which tend to increase very rapidly in line with the increase in the price of houses.
BANDA ACEH - A British energy worker kidnapped in the restive Indonesian province of Aceh has been released unharmed after just one day in captivity, embassy and police officials said Thursday. Malcolm Primrose was abducted on Tuesday by a group of armed men who stopped his car as he was being driven to a work site in Lubuk Pempeng, a village in East Aceh district, at around 11:00 am (0400 GMT). The kidnappers tied up his Indonesian driver before taking Primrose away in their car. Primrose, in his early 60s, phoned his Indonesian wife on Wednesday evening to convey a ransom demand from his captors, provincial police spokesman Gustav Leo told AFP. They initially demanded one billion rupiah ($100,000) but in a later conversation with his wife raised the figure to five billion, according to East Aceh district police chief Muhajir, who goes by one name. The kidnappers then dropped the figure to 250 million rupiah but when their demands were not met immediately, they quickly gave up. “They just got fed up and released him without ransom” late on Wednesday, said Muhajir. Leo said Primrose was freed in the middle of a palm oil plantation in the Perlak area of East Aceh. “Police found him this morning in a good condition. He was unharmed.” A spokesman for the British embassy in Jakarta said: “We are delighted to confirm that Malcolm Primrose has been released. Embassy officials are with Mr Primrose and are providing consular assistance.” Muhajir said he had picked up the Briton after he was discovered alone at a security checkpoint in the plantation and security forces were still hunting for the kidnappers. Primrose had been working as a sub-contractor for a subsidiary of Indonesian oil and gas company Medco Energi Internasional. A company spokesman also confirmed his release. Authorities had launched a massive search for Primrose, with more than 150 police and soldiers deployed. He had been working on a drilling project to explore for gas in the jungles of resource-rich Aceh and Tuesday was meant to be his last day in the province, according to a source familiar with the case. Muhajir said he suspected the kidnappers were former fighters from Aceh’s three-decade separatist struggle. The conflict ended in 2005, but observers have long warned that weapons left over from the fighting could pose a threat in the area. Keith Loveard, a risk analyst with Jakarta-based Concord Consulting, said he regarded the kidnapping as “one-off” likely carried out by former members of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), the group that fought against the government. “What is driving this is that you have these former GAM combatants who have not got much to do with themselves,” he told AFP. Such individuals were likely short of money but had easy access to weapons, he said. “It all comes down to economics -- how you put food on the table for your family.” There have been previous kidnappings in Aceh -- in 2008 five Chinese nationals were held hostage for two days. But in general abductions are rare in Indonesia. The 2005 peace deal that ended the separatist conflict in Aceh granted the province broad autonomy, allowing it to become the only province to implement strict Islamic laws.

Britain probes allegations of forex manipulation Agence France-Presse
LONDON - Britain’s markets watchdog is holding talks with “relevant parties” over allegations of foreign exchange market manipulation by banks, a spokesman said on Thursday. “The Financial Conduct Authority is aware of these allegations and has been speaking to the relevant parties. However, we can’t comment further at this time,” an FCA spokesman told AFP. The Financial Times, citing sources, said the FCA had requested information from several banks with large London foreign exchange businesses following allegations that lenders had traded ahead of customer orders and attempted to manipulate benchmarks. Citigroup and Deutsche Bank, the two largest players in the foreign exchange market with a combined
market share of about 30 percent, are among the banks which have been asked for information on the matter. However, there was no suggestion that the two banks were being specifically targeted, the business daily added. The FCA would not confirm any names. The development meanwhile comes as the European Commission is shortly expected to present proposals to tighten up oversight of key financial market benchmarks, especially of interest rates, in the wake of last year’s Libor interbank rate-rigging scandal.

PARIS - The 50 largest European companies are all heavily present in tax havens with an average of 117 offshore subsidiaries each, a French NGO said on Wednesday. The report by non-governmental organisation CCFD-Terre Solidaire and CERAS, an organisation that analyses social issues, comes after France’s government pledged to act against tax havens in the light of a tax fraud scandal. CCFD went through the accounts and activity reports of the listed companies, which include the banks HSBC, BNP Paribas and Deutsche Bank, carmakers such as Peugeot and Volkswagen as well as Siemens and Vodafone. It found that all of the 50 companies -- the biggest in Europe by turnover -- were present in tax havens with the number of subsidiaries there accounting for 29 percent of their overall subsidiaries abroad. “Just in the Cayman Islands, they have more subsidiaries than they have in Brazil and twice as many as in India. And in Luxembourg nearly as many as in China,” said the report, titled “In the paradise of lost taxes”. “While this does not constitute proof of tax evasion, this massive concentration of offshore subsidiaries goes hand-in-hand with an opacity in accounting that makes it hard to localise the 208-billion-euro ($277-billion) profits of these firms in 2012.” The two organisations called on G8 nations, which are meeting in Northern Ireland next week, as well as on the rich and emerging countries of the G20, to take measures to fight the trend.

WASHINGTON - Chief executives of top US companies are slightly more upbeat about the nation’s economic outlook but say political uncertainties are cramping growth, according to a survey released Tuesday. The Business Roundtable’s second-quarter 2013 CEO Economic Outlook Survey showed the business leaders expect a minor improvement in economic output over the next six months, with modestly brighter expectations for sales and hiring offsetting a decline in capital investment. CEOs expected the economy to grow at a 2.2 percent pace, edging up from 2.1 percent seen in the firstquarter survey, said the pro-business lobby. “Overall, CEOs see the US economy still on a slow road to recovery,” said Jim McNerney, the head of aerospace giant Boeing.
“Relative to economic conditions, business performance remains strong, but the US government’s unresolved long-term fiscal path and an uncertain political environment are key obstacles to more robust economic growth and hiring.” The May 13-31 survey was based on responses by 141 CEOs. The survey’s composite index for the next six months of sales, capital spending and employment jumped to 84.3 in the second quarter from 81.0 in the first quarter. Though it was the highest reading in a year, the number “signals modest economic expansion,” McNerney said in a conference call. He said he was “hopeful” that Congress, which has taken up immigration reform, would pass a balanced law that would help fill both higher-skill and lower-skill jobs that currently go begging. “I see it in my world, in the science engineering and math capability that we need,” he said of the lack of
highly skilled job applicants. But McNerney was less optimistic about entitlement reform affecting the US social safety net for retirement and health care, crucial to long-term deficit reduction. “There has been nothing substantive that’s any closer to legislation than there was two months ago,” he said. John Engler, the president of the Business Roundtable and a former Republican governor of Michigan, lamented the political uncertainty in Washington, with Congress deadlocked for months over passing the US budget for the fiscal year beginning October 1 and increasing the country’s borrowing ceiling. “Certainly the progress has been nonexistent, and in some ways is going in the opposite direction,” he said in the conference call. “The pressure points are building for the fall,” he said. “They’re not going to deal with it until they’re up against the wall with the deadline right in front of them.”

ISTANBUL/ANKARA - Hundreds of anti-government demonstrators chanted and sang in Istanbul’s Taksim Square early on Thursday after Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan’s AK party floated the offer of a referendum on development plans that stirred two weeks of protests. The night passed peacefully, with young men playing soccer on the square at dawn, after several days of fierce clashes between police and protesters opposed to Erdogan. But it was not clear if the referendum offer would quell protests. The pro-government Star newspaper declared in a front page headline: “The way out is a referendum”. “Referendum game”, said Cumhuriyet newspaper, which is fiercely critical of Erdogan, whom it portrays as an increasingly authoritarian figure in Turkish politics.
The deputy chairman of Erdogan’s ruling AK Party, Huseyin Celik, said late on Wednesday that the protesters should withdraw from Gezi Park, a leafy corner of the square where they have set up a ramshackle settlement of tents. At the same time, he made a concession by offering a referendum on the redevelopment plans for the square that first stirred the unrest. A heavy-handed police crackdown on Gezi Park nearly two weeks ago triggered an unprecedented wave of protest against Erdogan and his AK Party - an association of centrists and conservative religious elements - drawing in secularists, nationalists, professionals, unionists and students. Riot police looked on from the fringes as crowds mingled late into the night, some protesters chanting and dancing, others applauding a concert pianist who took up residence with a grand piano in the middle of the square.
North Korea says South’s ‘sinister’ moves caused talks collapse Reuters SEOUL - North Korea blamed the South on Thursday for scuttling fresh dialogue that aimed to ease tensions between the rival Koreas, saying Seoul deliberately torpedoed reconciliation talks planned for this week. The latest outburst indicates Pyongyang may seek a return to confrontation rather than dialogue, some observers said. Earlier this year, North Korea threatened nuclear and missile strikes against South Korea and the United States after it was hit with U.N. sanctions for its February nuclear weapons test. This week’s aborted talks had been intended to reopen a closed joint industrial zone with the South in what would have been a confidence-building measure between two countries that remain officially at war. The talks were canceled when the two Koreas disagreed over the rank of the officials to head the delegations that were to meet in Seoul. “The problem ... is not a simple issue related to the level of the head of the delegation to the talks but a manifestation of its sinister intention to make the talks between authorities abortive,” the North’s Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea said in a statement carried by the KCNA news agency. Korea was divided after the Second World War and the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice rather than a permanent peace treaty, leaving the two countries technically at war. “The war of nerves means it does not look like there will be an easy breakthrough that will lead to dialogue any time soon,” said Yang Moo-jin of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul. Singling out a specific person to be the North’s chief delegate may have touched a nerve in the status-conscious North, Yang said. North Korea appeared to have hunkered down on Wednesday after the talks collapsed. It stopped answering a phone line it re-established on Friday that had been severed in April. Experts say the North often alternates from threats of military action to negotiations in a bid to extract aid. Its long term aim is to win diplomatic recognition from the United States and to be recognized as a nuclear weapons state.

Many reform-minded Iranians say they will snub the election over crackdowns by Iranian authorities and the decision to keep former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani from the ballot. Rafsanjani’s stature rose sharply with liberals after he criticized hardline tactics used in 2009 against
protesters following the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who cannot run again this time because of term limits. A Thursday report by the proreform Etemad newspaper quotes Rafsanjani as saying that people “should not boycott” the vote. Several other newspapers reported similar comments. Six candidates are on Friday’s ballot, including former nuclear negotiator Hasan Rowhani, a close ally of Rafsanjani who is backed by reformist leaders.

NEW YORK — Tall, trim and wearing catwalk clothes: Pro basketball stars have stepped up their style to become influential tastemakers. On the court, of course, they’re in uniform, with a lot of red and black donned by the Miami Heat, and silver and black on the San Antonio Spurs, during the NBA Finals. But actual play time is only 48 minutes, leaving a whole lot of time for a statement wardrobe. And what statements they’ve been making of late: Capri pants, polka dots and floral prints, fedora hats and lens-less glasses are among the looks that have garnered them almost as much attention as their hard-court moves. Some of the top players now have stylists, and you’ll find players like Dwyane Wade, Tyson Chandler, Amar’e Stoudemire, Rajon Rondo and Russell Westbrook in the front row of fashion shows. In fact, Wade is already planning a trip to Milan Fashion week after his Miami Heat wrap up their attempt to defend their title in the NBA Finals (it remains to be seen
whether he’ll be going in a celebratory mood; the Heat lost Game 1 of the seven-game series, which resumes on Sunday). Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks, who describes his own style as “a little edgy,” is a fashion show front-row regular who finds that world intriguing. “Fashion is a very different world than basketball. ... It all happens so quick,” said Anthony, the league’s leading scorer this season, in a recent interview. “There’s all that time they put in for a threeminute fashion show.” The 6-foot-8 star, who gets many of his threads custom-made, came into the NBA already a fan of fashion. He doesn’t consider all the attention and energy that goes into it a distraction: “I just like it, I like to look good and I feel good about myself.” The high-fashion, even nerdfashion sported by the NBA’s top
athletes are a far cry from the hiphop, baggy-pants street style that permeated the league in the 1990s, best exemplified by the likes of Allen Iverson. The league frowned upon that look, and in 2005, instituted a dress code that demanded players dress in “business casual” attire when they were on league business. But instead of wearing uniform suits, many NBA players have used the opportunity to showcase their individuality. Westbrook’s shirts, which have ranged from leopard-print to bright cartoon designs, could hardly be described business-like, but they are certainly casual and unique. Wade took a lot of flak when he started down the more flamboyant route, says Calyann Barnett, Wade’s stylist, but now it seems everyone else is nipping at his Christian Louboutin wingtipsneaker heels.

NEW YORK — The crowd cheered fashion’s top talent at the Council of Fashion Designers of America awards, but the most love in the room seemed to go to Hillary Rodham Clinton. Clinton received a standing ovation at Monday night’s ceremony at Lincoln Center before she presented the CFDA’s highest honor, its Founder’s Award, to Oscar de la Renta, whom she called “a dear friend.” Then, de la Renta said he thought she could be the next U.S. president, and there was enthusiastic applause. Clinton recalled first meeting de la Renta as first lady in 1993. The designer approached her in a White House receiving line and said “that’s one of my dresses.” The big competitive CFDA winners were Proenza Schouler for womenswear, Thom Browne for menswear and Phillip Lim for accessories.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

WASHINGTON — Jennifer Lopez says Latinos in the United States are starting to realize their power in politics and media, and that makes the timing good for her latest undertaking: Lobbying for greater diversity in TV programming. The entertainer spoke Wednesday at the Cable Show, a communications convention, ahead of new programming set to launch July 18 on the NUVOtv network. Lopez serves as chief creative officer of the English-language Latino channel. “It’s an extension of who I am as an artist,” she said about her new role in an interview with The Associated Press. “As I grow in this business, I’ve been in the business close to 20 years now, that creative spark that you have doesn’t go away. It keeps growing almost.” Lopez said working behind the scenes is just— if not more— rewarding than performing. “Singing and acting and dancing and performing live, it’s always going to be my passion,” she said. “But at the end of the day when you’re given the opportunities to be more creative, to create things more from the ground up, to really, really do things like NUVO, which is, really for me empowering a community that means so much to me.” She added, “It feels bigger than me. It feels bigger than just a television show. It’s something
that can change the world, the face of television, the way people feel about themselves, how they’re inspired, what they aspire to do and to be.” The actress-singer-dancer said these are exciting times across the board for Latinos. “There’s a big revolution going on, it’s like a media and cultural revolution of Latinos here in the United States,” she said. “We’re realizing our power. We’re realizing that we matter here. You know, we’re not just, you know, the guys working behind the scenes in the kitchens and as a plumber. You know what I mean. We really have influence. We’re really growing as a community and we’ve come into a place where we deserve to be considered and served and catered to and that’s an exciting thing for Latinos right now.” Lopez was meeting later Wednesday with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, the National Council of La Raza and Sens. Harry Reid and Bob Menendez. She said businesses are getting on board too because of the tremendous buying power of Latinos, which is why she is also the creative chief officer of the Viva Movil brand for Verizon. The entertainer is opening a chain of 15 cell phone stores with bilingual staffers starting this month to cater to the Hispanic market.

Kate to formally name ‘Royal Princess’ cruise ship Associated Press Writer LONDON — The Duchess of Cambridge will officially name the new “Royal Princess” cruise liner at a gala ceremony. The former Kate Middleton plans to board the vessel for the naming ceremony, which will include a blessing and the traditional smashing of a bottle across the hull. The ceremony in Southampton on Thursday will include a brief tour of the ship for the duchess, who is expected to give birth to her and Prince William’s first child in mid-July. It is expected to be her final planned solo event before the birth. The new 3,600-passenger ship is scheduled to begin cruising the Mediterranean this summer.
