New film shows how Houston’s death changed Grammys Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES — When Grammy Awards producers learned of Whitney Houston’s death less than 24 hours before the live telecast, they scrapped parts of the script, added performances and puzzled over how best to honor the Grammy-winning singer who died unexpectedly at age 48.

Host LL Cool J said that addressing the Grammy audience at the Staples Center after Houston’s death was “definitely the most challenging moment I’ve faced in my career.” He decided to open with a prayer, and producers agreed, though none could recall another network TV event that began as such. This and other last-minute changes made to the 54th annual Grammy Awards are chronicled in a new documentary, “A Death in the Family: The Show Must Go On,” which premiered Monday at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The screening of the 25-minute documentary and 14minute highlight reel of past Grammy performances was also a not-so-subtle push for Emmy votes. “We’d love to have you consider us when you vote,” said Ken Ehrlich, executive producer of the Grammys for the past 32 years. “We’ve been nominated before and not won.” He added that executives at CBS, which broadcasts the Grammys, suggested Ehrlich’s team produce the documentary, which can be seen on the Grammy.com website and

at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. Emmy ballots are due at the end of the month. The documentary, though it deals with show changes made after Houston’s death, isn’t a downer. Ehrlich said that about an hour before he heard about Houston, he’d experienced a career high: Paul McCartney, who was set to close the show, asked if he might perform a Beatles medley from “Abbey Road,” and maybe it could include a guitar jam with the likes of Dave Grohl, Joe Walsh and Bruce Springsteen. The number came together just before Houston’s death. Ehrlich said the magic of that McCartney moment made him feel “like maybe there is a God.” “God said, I’m going to give this to him, but I’m not going to let him get too cocky,” the veteran producer said in an interview before the screening. After Houston died, the challenge was to “do something that was respectful to Whitney,” Ehrlich said, “that set a tone that also didn’t lose the fact that there were thousands of people who were coming to this event because they had done something remarkable this year on their own, and they needed to be treated with respect as well.”

NEW YORK - Lindsay Lohan is in negotiations to star in Paul Schrader’s upcoming film “The Canyons,” a thriller penned by Bret Easton Ellis. Ellis wrote the novel “American Psycho,” which was later adapted into a film. Adult film star James Deen has already signed up for the role of Christian, while Lohan would co-star as Tara. Lohan would like to do the film and the filmmakers like her for it, as evidenced by Ellis’ tweet announcing her joining the cast earlier today. “I am beyond thrilled that James Deen and Lindsay Lohan will be playing the parts of Christian and Tara,” he tweeted. Braxton Pope, a producer on the film, said that the “Mean Girls” star’s talent has been lost amidst all the reports about her personal life. They have been looking at her for some time. “This gets overwhelmed by publicity and her personal tumult, but Lindsay is a very talented actress,” producer Pope told TheWrap. “She’s not in the same genus as Kim Kardashian or Paris Hilton. She’s the real deal.” Lohan has already come in to do work with Schrader, which a cinematographer filmed. That said, her place in the project is not set in stone, as it is incumbent upon

Lohan’s absolute commitment once filming begins July 9. Lohan is currently filming “Liz & Dick,” and a recent car accident again raised questions about her personal life impacting production.

Schrader, Ellis and Pope have all put money into the film, and they also used Kickstarter to raise funds. Given the smaller budget for this independent film, delays in shooting are not an option.

An agricultural expert from Warmadewa University, Dr. I Gusti Bagus Udayana, suggested the government to cut the long chain of product marketing. It was based on consideration that so far the chain should pass through middlemen in

villages and central market. “So far, the marketing chain of the agricultural products is too long so that it turns inefficient. To that end, the chain must be cut off. By doing so, the agricultural products can be marketed directly to con-

sumers,” said Bagus Udayana in Denpasar, Tuesday (Jun 12). According to him, the shorter the agricultural marketing chain between farmers and consumers, the greater the profits would be obtained by farmers. To that end, local governments should support the capacity of farmers so that they could sell the agricultural products directly to consumers. Aside from cutting off the long marketing chain, the governments also needed to establish an agro market in each regency and municipality. For strengthening the farmers, the role of

the associations and farmer groups was highly required so that farmers could be independent and no too much relied on the government projects. “It’s time for Bali to lead to agro-industry so that the agricultural products can be absorbed. As a result, farmers will easily market their products. Then, existence of the agro-industries will be able to reduce unemployment and poverty,” he said. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Indonesia Farmers Association

(HKTI) of Bali, Prof. Nyoman Suparta, earlier had said that local agricultural trade system was inefficient. No wonder if the income of farmers was still low and the rice did not have the same quality standard. So far, the rice milling companies purchased grain at quite expensive price from brokers. On the one hand, the brokers were benefited because they purchased grains at very cheap price from farmers.

Construction of Hotel Praja situated on Jalan Mohamad Yamin III, Renon, was again questioned by relevant agencies. One of them was the Denpasar Housing and Spatial Planning Agency (DTRP). The agency questioned the use of Balinese ornament on the buildings of the city hotel. Other than DTRP, the Denpasar House also inspected the construction project of the hotel adjacent to the SD 5 Saraswati primary school. Even, the hotel owner had also been asked to present its permit requirements. The Head of Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing Agency, I Made Kusuma Diputra, said on Tuesday (Jul 12) that his party could not ensure the building height of the four-storey hotel because it was currently still under construction. “We will check it first to see the height of the building. We do not have to measure it manually, just by a single click we can know the height,” said Kusuma Diputra. Apart from the matter of building height, Kusuma Diputra also questioned about the existence of

On the other hand, Chairman of Commission B of the Denpasar House, Eko Supriadi, questioned about the change in the function of building on the ground floor. Earlier, the hotel basement that would consist of 20 rooms would be functioned as a parking lot. However, it had now been transformed into hotel rooms. In response to the question, the hotel owner, IB Gede, claimed if the building height of his hotel did not exceed 15 meters. Even, his party invited the officers to re-measure it. “Please check it again, it will not exceed the height of 15 meters,” he said. Meanwhile, regarding the change of function on the ground floor, his party admitted if it was initially intended for parking lot. However, since it had an ample parking lot outside the hotel, the ground floor space was then taken advantage for some rooms and for family purposes. “Regarding the permits, we have had them, but they are now in Sanur,” said IB Gede. To strengthen the security, both for daily activities and international events, the Chief of Bali Police, Budi Gunawan, prepared a sophisticated device in the form of Police Mobile Command (PMC) for securing the opening of the International Drug Enforcement Conference (IDEC) in Nusa Dua, Tuesday (Jun 12). Such device was the only one in Bali and served as a security device, either in daily activities or large-scale events. “Previously, Bali Police had a device named the Mobile Communication of Police Patrol Center or Satellite CommunicationMobile (Satellite Commob),” said Director of Traffic Affairs of Bali Police, Syamsul Bahri, last Tuesday. However, said Syamsul, the PMC device was more sophisticated than Commob. With such device, the entire regional police in Indonesia, including National Police Headquarters in Jakarta, could directly monitor

the activities existing in Bali. “It can be used for teleconference. Any activity held in Bali can be monitored by all the Regional Police across Indonesia,” said Director of Traffic Affairs, Bali Police, Bonaparte Silalahi, last Tuesday. He further said the device had been equipped with mobile CCTV camera system. The new system enabled the local police to monitor the uncontrolled location or even simultaneously monitor an accident and all activities including criminal offense. “This device is equipped with indoor device, monitor, antenna and computer as well as

device allowing the communication through video conference with headquarters in Jakarta,” he said. In conjunction with the IDEC event in Nusa Dua, the device had been alerted at location. Well, all Regional Police throughout Indonesia could witness the opening of the IDEC officially carried out by Vice President Dr. Boediono. “Just now, the official opening of IDEC could be seen by Regional Police throughout Indonesia. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Ocean’s Salt Measured from Space This week marks the one-year anniversary of a NASA mission designed to help answer an age-old question: How salty is the sea? The Aquarius instrument aboard the Satélite de Aplicaciones Científicas (SAC)-D is providing some of the first largescale pictures of ocean salinity around the world, and how it changes from week to week — which influences everything from ocean circulation to the global water cycle. The satellite was launched on June 10, 2011. Over the last year, the instrument has sent back data showing the sometimes striking variations in salinity in the world’s oceans and seas, and has also confirmed Earth-bound observations. Oceanographers have long known that the Atlantic Ocean is saltier than the Pacific and Indian oceans, and the satellite images show the same. It has also shown that the world’s longest rivers carry tremendous amounts of fresh water

from l a n d and spread plumes far into the sea. And in the tropics, extra rainfall makes equatorial waters somewhat fresher. The satellite technically measures the “brightness temperature” of a tiny layer atop ocean waters — a slice just 0.4 inches (1 centimeter) thick. Land masses tend to be “brighter” than water, so

any measurements near the coast are skewed by their proximity to land. But as the mission progresses, NASA engineers should be able to sort out the signals in the data caused by bright land, and get the true measure of salinity in coastal areas.

The institute said it had successfully tested the vaccine in humans, but that more testing would be required in areas where the parasite is most common, mainly in Africa and South America. The freshwater parasite can penetrate people’s skin, and children are at especially high risk because they swim and bathe in contaminated water. Brazil has some 2.5 million cases of schistosomiasis, which initially causes an itchy rash, followed in subsequent weeks by fever, chills, coughing and muscle aches. After a few years, the disease can damage internal organs. “While the mortality rate is low, schistosomiasis causes incapacity, which makes it a disease that is caused by poverty and one that perpetuates poverty,” Araujo-Jorge said.

A world of pinching and grabbing virtual objects in the air still seems more like “Minority Report” than reality, but MIT’s Tether glove may help usher in such futuristic interfaces. Glove wearers can make gestures to create or move around 3D objects in a shared virtual space viewed through handheld tablet screens. That hands-on approach for a shared virtual workspace came out of MIT’s Tangible Media Group. An MIT video shows how people can use either the motiontracked glove or a multitouch tablet screen to draw spirals, create cubes and spheres, and work together to arrange virtual objects in patterns such as ascending or descending lines. “The system allows input through capacitive touch on the display and a motiontracked glove,” according to the MIT website. “When placed behind the display, the user’s hand extends into the virtual world, enabling the user to interact with objects directly.” One video example shows a person drawing spirals on a tablet screen and moving the tablet backward to create a 3D spiraling shape in the virtual workspace. That translates a familiar 2D gesture on a common consumer device into 3D results. Another case shows how glove wearers can use pinching gestures between the thumb and various fingers to grab and move around virtual objects, or even stretch the corners of a virtual cube — a wire frame box appears around the objects being highlighted. Quickly touching together two fingers can also make certain objects appear or disappear. MIT’s system allows people to work together on the same virtual space while standing side by side, but it can also supposedly work with remote human partners. Still, the concept is more of an impressive tech demo than a gadget ready to hit the market anytime soon — it relies upon five Vicon cameras to track the glove and head motions of human users.

Suu Kyi sets out on first Europe trip in 24 years Associated Press Writer

It is a warning to tourism drivers that do not have permit. A total of 27 illegal drivers were declared guilty in a trial held in the Tabanan District Court, Tuesday (Jun 12). They were sentenced to a week in prison or to pay a fine worth IDR 250,000. Aside from being imposed with a fine, the drivers from different regions of Bali were also obligated to pay the court fee worth IDR 2,000. In its injunction, the single judge, Fatarony, declared those drivers to have violated the Regional Regulation No.10/2001 regarding the Tourism Transportation. Sentencing of the judge was lighter than the demands filed by investigators of Bali Public Order Officer (Satpol PP). The investigators demanded them for 3 months imprisonment and a fine of IDR 5 million. “You have to pay a fine worth IDR 250,000, otherwise you should go to jail for a week,” said the judge when putting an end to its verdict. Before closing the court, the judge asked the drivers to submit their license to run a business. Having been convicted, the drivers could only submit to their fate. They preferred paying the fine rather than staying in prison although they were forced to use private money. “Actually, we object to this penalty as the amount is too burdensome,” complained Wayan Wenten, one of the drivers from Sanur. He admitted, in the previous trial, the unlicensed drivers were only sentenced to a fine of only IDR 75,000. Similar complaint was also revealed by another driver, Wayan Sutrena, from Ubud, Gianyar. He considered it burdensome if he should pay a fine of IDR 250,000. Meanwhile, his daily income was only some few averagely reaching only IDR 100,000. More sadly, his party had tried to submit the permit of tourist transport for several times. Unfortunately, his effort always ended in stalemate. There were indications if the arrangement of tourism transport permit was monopolized by a group of persons. As a consequence, many drivers found difficulty to submit their permit. Different complaint was expressed by Gede Santoso from Buleleng. He admitted to have had a permit. However, it later disappeared when the permit was about to be renewed whereas all the drivers were always eager to submit the permit, but it was always restricted. Those illegal drivers were arrested last week by a joint team of Bali Public Order Officer, Transportation Agency and the Indonesia Tour Guides Association (HPI) of Bali at some tourist destinations in Tabanan such as Ulun Danu Beratan, Baturiti, Batukaru Temple, Penebel, Tanah Lot, Kediri and Alas Kedaton monkey forest, Marga. “We arrested them as they could not present their operational permit of tourist transport,” said the Head of Bali Public Order Officer, Ketut Arnawa, accompanied by an investigator, Ketut Sadar, after the court. The official explained the raid against illegal tourist drivers and tourist guides would continue to be held because their actions were detrimental to regionally generated revenue. (kmb30)

YANGON — When Aung San Suu Kyi last saw Europe, it was still divided into the democratic West and communist East. Her homeland of Myanmar was still under oppressive military rule. The long-time democracy activist set out Wednesday on her first European trip since 1988 to make a long-awaited acceptance speech for the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize and at a time when Myanmar is making tenuous democratic progress. Her scheduled return to Myanmar by the end of the month gets her back in time to attend the July 4 reconvening of Parliament, which was announced Tuesday night on state television. The parliamentary session will be considering crucial legislation, including media regulation and foreign investment. Cheerful and energetic at Yangon’s airport, Suu Kyi waved to journalists and passengers as she headed to the departure lounge. Asked about her trip, Suu Kyi told reporters she expects it to be eye-opening. “Each country will be different. I will know how backward (Myanmar) is when I reach the other countries,” Suu Kyi said. For 24 years, the opposition leader was either under house arrest or too fearful that if she left Myanmar, the former military regime would not let her return. Mexico to push for more IMF funding at G20 summit

MEXICO CITY — Mexico will use the impending G-20 summit to push the world’s largest economies to increase the resources of the International Monetary Fund and build confidence in the fund’s ability to help European countries shaken by financial crisis, President Felipe Calderon said Tuesday. Financial officials begin meeting Friday in the coastal resort of Los Cabos, and national leaders will start assembling two days later. “Mexico is seeking the adoption of a plan of integrated, comprehensive, long-term action that will go include, and go beyond, measures to confront and resolve the European crisis,” Calderon said. Calderon told reporters that as the host country Mexico will work to achieve a long-term plan with concrete measures to spur economic growth and increase the funding available to countries that need cash.

NUSA DUA - The government has developed a national policy and strategy in a bid to prevent and eradicate drug abuse and its illicit circulation, according to Vice President Boediono. “It is to show that the government is serious about dealing with drug abuse and its illicit circulation,” he said here on Tuesday. Boediono made the statement at the opening of the 29th International Drug Enforcement Conference (IDEC), jointly organized by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) and the US Drug Enforcement Agency. Also present in the INDEC were Law and Human Rights Minister Amir Syamsudin, Bali Governor I Made Mangku Pastika, BNN Chief Goris Mere, and 305 participants from 75 countries. Boediono said the government was determined to eradicate narcotics crimes by cooperating with other countries and by implementing policies and strategies to ensure a drugfree Indonesia by 2015. The vice president added the policy was in line with the Presidential Instruction No. 12/2011, in which ministers and state institution leaders at the central and regional levels were advised to

include narcotics eradication in their plans of action. Besides, Boediono said, the National Narcotics Agency had been granted sufficient powers to ensure law enforcement and handle narcotic threats. Meanwhile, Mere said the conference was the first of its kind to be held outside the United States and other Western countries. The conference will discuss how the countries can cooperate in their fight against international drug syndicates and transnational drug crime. “Through this conference, we will enhance the spirit of international cooperation to combat drug crime. We will share information about drug crime trends and priorities for action in the fight against narcotics,” Mere stated. The conference will be attended by 52 member countries and 21 observer countries. The event is expected to result in cooperation agreements and discussions on the measures and strategies that can be used to combat drug abuse.

China shipped missile launch vehicles to North Korea last year in breach of UN resolutions, but was never rebuked because the US did not want to embarrass Beijing, a Japanese newspaper said on Wednesday. The report, based on Japanese government sources, is the most strident of recent claims that China has been involved in helping to arm its wayward ally after earlier allegations Beijing supplied technology. Four giant trucks capable of transporting and launching ballistic missiles were exported by a Chinese firm last August, the leading Asahi Shimbun said. The vehicles were likely those on display at the huge military display in April marking the centenary of the birth of the state’s founder Kim Il Sung, the Asahi said. The sale of weapons systems to Pyongyang is banned under UN Security Council resolutions aimed at containing the hermit state’s nuclear ambitions. But at Washington’s urging, Tokyo and Seoul have avoided confronting Beijing in a bid to keep North Korea’s patron onside in the international effort to tamp down tensions on the peninsula, the paper reported. BAGHDAD - Bombings and shootings targeting Shi’ite Muslim pilgrims in Baghdad and police across Iraq killed at least 53 people on Wednesday in apparently coordinated attacks during a major religious festival. Violence in Iraq has eased since the height of the war, but Islamist insurgents tied to al Qaeda are still potent, often targeting Shi’ite pilgrims to try to reignite the sectarian tensions that drove Iraq close to civil war in 2006-2007. In Wednesday’s attacks, at least 18 people were killed when four bombs hit pilgrims across Baghdad as they gathered to mark the anniversary of the death of Shi’ite imam Moussa al-Kadhim, a great-grandson of Prophet Mohammad. Sharapova may carry Russian flag in London Reuters

MOSCOW - Maria Sharapova will be the Russian delegation’s flag-bearer at next month’s Olympic opening ceremony in London, Russia’s tennis chief Shamil Tarpishchev said on Tuesday. But Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) would make the final decision on the flagbearer next month. The Russians would break with tradition if they chose Sharapova, who won the French Open title last weekend. game that has ensnared dozens of CFA and club officials, referees and players accused of match-fixing, gambling and other crimes. The scandal -- coupled with poor performances by the national team -- have made football the laughing stock of Chinese fans and have undermined the popularity of the domestic game in the world’s

Xinhua said four former national team players and a former national team official were also sentenced by courts in the northeastern province of Liaoning for accepting bribes to fix domestic matches. Sharapova may carry Russian flag in London Reuters

MOSCOW - Maria Sharapova will be the Russian delegation’s flag-bearer at next month’s Olympic opening ceremony in London, Russia’s tennis chief Shamil Tarpishchev said on Tuesday. But Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) would make the final decision on the flagbearer next month. The Russians would break with tradition if they chose Sharapova, who won the French Open title last weekend. Nan took bribes worth 1.48 million yuan ($235,000) while Xie accepted 1.7 million yuan, it said. The sentences mark the culmination of a campaign to root out entrenched graft in the Chinese

game that has ensnared dozens of CFA and club officials, referees and players accused of match-fixing, gambling and other crimes. The scandal -- coupled with poor performances by the national team -- have made football the laughing stock of Chinese fans and have undermined the popularity of the domestic game in the world’s

Xinhua said four former national team players and a former national team official were also sentenced by courts in the northeastern province of Liaoning for accepting bribes to fix domestic matches. Wei Shaohui, the former national team official, was jailed for 10 years and six months.

China shipped missile launch vehicles to North Korea last year in breach of UN resolutions, but was never rebuked because the US did not want to embarrass Beijing, a Japanese newspaper said on Wednesday. The report, based on Japanese government sources, is the most strident of recent claims that China has been involved in helping to arm its wayward ally after earlier allegations Beijing supplied technology. Four giant trucks capable of transporting and launching ballistic missiles were exported by a Chinese firm last August, the leading Asahi Shimbun said. The vehicles were likely those on display at the huge military display in April marking the centenary of the birth of the state’s founder Kim Il Sung, the Asahi said. The sale of weapons systems to Pyongyang is banned under UN Security Council resolutions aimed at containing the hermit state’s nuclear ambitions. But at Washington’s urging, Tokyo and Seoul have avoided confronting Beijing in a bid to keep North Korea’s patron onside in the international effort to tamp down tensions on the peninsula, the paper reported. BAGHDAD - Bombings and shootings targeting Shi’ite Muslim pilgrims in Baghdad and police across Iraq killed at least 53 people on Wednesday in apparently coordinated attacks during a major religious festival. Violence in Iraq has eased since the height of the war, but Islamist insurgents tied to al Qaeda are still potent, often targeting Shi’ite pilgrims to try to reignite the sectarian tensions that drove Iraq close to civil war in 2006-2007. In Wednesday’s attacks, at least 18 people were killed when four bombs hit pilgrims across Baghdad as they gathered to mark the anniversary of the death of Shi’ite imam Moussa al-Kadhim, a great-grandson of Prophet Mohammad. One of those blasts killed at least nine people as pilgrims passed through a police checkpoint in central Baghdad. “A group of pilgrims were walking and passed by a tent offering food and drinks when suddenly a car exploded near them,” said Wathiq Muhana, a policeman whose patrol was stationed near the blast in Karrada district. “People were running away covered with blood and bodies were scattered on the ground,” he said. MEXICO CITY — Mexico will use the impending G-20 summit to push the world’s largest economies to increase the resources of the International Monetary Fund and build confidence in the fund’s ability to help European countries shaken by financial crisis, President Felipe Calderon said Tuesday. The IMF and European Union have already spent billions in bailouts of Ireland, Greece and Portugal and IMF head Christine Lagarde has been seeking increased funding. The Obama administration has said it doesn’t want to contribute. Calderon says he expects significant progress toward a lasting solution to the crisis at the summit, which takes place as many governments and banks struggle to find enough funding in the face of market fears about the health of their balance sheets. Financial officials begin meeting Friday in the coastal resort of Los Cabos, and national leaders will start assembling two days later. “Mexico is seeking the adoption of a plan of integrated, comprehensive, long-term action that will go include, and go beyond, measures to confront and resolve the European crisis,” Calderon said. Calderon told reporters that as the host country Mexico will work to achieve a long-term plan with concrete measures to spur economic growth and increase the funding available to countries that need cash.

He said that would include increasing the funding of the International Monetary Fund. “We’ll be looking for this meeting, under the leadership of Mexico, to strengthen and establish concrete commitments to strengthen international institutions, particularly the International Monetary Fund, so that it is a strong and flexible tool for confronting the economic crisis,” Calderon said. A day before the G-20 summit, Greeks are voting in a national election that could bring to power a party that rejects the condition of the country’s bailout, throwing into uncertainty Greece’s future participation in the shared Euro currency. Markets are frightened by the ramification of the crisis’ spread into the far larger economies of Italy and Spain, which tapped billions in bailout funds for its struggling banks over the weekend. The IMF has described increased funding as a way of building a firewall that would block spread of the crisis into economies whose collapse would be catastrophic. Calderon said meetings of financial ministers in the run-up to the G-20 summit had, despite a lack of formal consensus, produced a sense of evolving agreement that “what’s needed is the immediate construction of a way of providing sufficient financial support, the so-called firewall that would allow us to dissipate any doubts about countries’ abilities to fulfill their financial commitments.”

Government serious about drug eradication Antara

NUSA DUA - The government has developed a national policy and strategy in a bid to prevent and eradicate drug abuse and its illicit circulation, according to Vice President Boediono. “It is to show that the government is serious about dealing with drug abuse and its illicit circulation,” he said here on Tuesday. Boediono made the statement at the opening of the 29th International Drug Enforcement Conference (IDEC), jointly organized by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) and the US Drug Enforcement Agency. Also present in the INDEC were Law and Human Rights Minister Amir Syamsudin, Bali Governor I Made Mangku Pastika, BNN Chief Goris Mere, and 305 participants from 75 countries. Boediono said the government was determined to eradicate narcotics crimes by cooperating with other countries and by implementing policies and strategies to ensure a drugfree Indonesia by 2015. The vice president added the policy was in line with the Presidential Instruction No. 12/2011, in which ministers and state institution leaders at the central and regional levels were advised to

include narcotics eradication in their plans of action. Besides, Boediono said, the National Narcotics Agency had been granted sufficient powers to ensure law enforcement and handle narcotic threats. Meanwhile, Mere said the conference was the first of its kind to be held outside the United States and other Western countries. The conference will discuss how the countries can cooperate in their fight against international drug syndicates and transnational drug crime. “Through this conference, we will enhance the spirit of international cooperation to combat drug crime. We will share information about drug crime trends and priorities for action in the fight against narcotics,” Mere stated. The conference will be attended by 52 member countries and 21 observer countries. The event is expected to result in cooperation agreements and discussions on the measures and strategies that can be used to combat drug abuse.

DENPASAR - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono hopes that UNESCO will recognise the Subak - the traditional irrigation system of Bali - as a world cultural heritage. Subak is a manifestation of the Balinese people’s philosophy, said the president in his speech while inaugurating the Bali Arts Festival here on Sunday evening. “It has been recommended for inclusion in UNESCO’s World Heritage List,” the president remarked. The head of state hoped that UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee will make this inclusion during its next meeting, which will be held from June 24 to July 6, 2012, in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Suu Kyi sets out on first Europe trip in 24 years Associated Press Writer

It is a warning to tourism drivers that do not have permit. A total of 27 illegal drivers were declared guilty in a trial held in the Tabanan District Court, Tuesday (Jun 12). They were sentenced to a week in prison or to pay a fine worth IDR 250,000. Aside from being imposed with a fine, the drivers from different regions of Bali were also obligated to pay the court fee worth IDR 2,000. In its injunction, the single judge, Fatarony, declared those drivers to have violated the Regional Regulation No.10/2001 regarding the Tourism Transportation. Sentencing of the judge was lighter than the demands filed by investigators of Bali Public Order Officer (Satpol PP). The investigators demanded them for 3 months imprisonment and a fine of IDR 5 million. “You have to pay a fine worth IDR 250,000, otherwise you should go to jail for a week,” said the judge when putting an end to its verdict. Before closing the court, the judge asked the drivers to submit their license to run a business. Having been convicted, the drivers could only submit to their fate. They preferred paying the fine rather than staying in prison although they were forced to use private money. “Actually, we object to this penalty as the amount is too burdensome,” complained Wayan Wenten, one of the drivers from Sanur. He admitted, in the previous trial, the unlicensed drivers were only sentenced to a fine of only IDR 75,000. Similar complaint was also revealed by another driver, Wayan Sutrena, from Ubud, Gianyar. He considered it burdensome if he should pay a fine of IDR 250,000. Meanwhile, his daily income was only some few averagely reaching only IDR 100,000. More sadly, his party had tried to submit the permit of tourist transport for several times. Unfortunately, his effort always ended in stalemate. There were indications if the arrangement of tourism transport permit was monopolized by a group of persons. As a consequence, many drivers found difficulty to submit their permit. Different complaint was expressed by Gede Santoso from Buleleng. He admitted to have had a permit. However, it later disappeared when the permit was about to be renewed whereas all the drivers were always eager to submit the permit, but it was always restricted. Those illegal drivers were arrested last week by a joint team of Bali Public Order Officer, Transportation Agency and the Indonesia Tour Guides Association (HPI) of Bali at some tourist destinations in Tabanan such as Ulun Danu Beratan, Baturiti, Batukaru Temple, Penebel, Tanah Lot, Kediri and Alas Kedaton monkey forest, Marga. “We arrested them as they could not present their operational permit of tourist transport,” said the Head of Bali Public Order Officer, Ketut Arnawa, accompanied by an investigator, Ketut Sadar, after the court. The official explained the raid against illegal tourist drivers and tourist guides would continue to be held because their actions were detrimental to regionally generated revenue. (kmb30)

YANGON — When Aung San Suu Kyi last saw Europe, it was still divided into the democratic West and communist East. Her homeland of Myanmar was still under oppressive military rule. The long-time democracy activist set out Wednesday on her first European trip since 1988 to make a long-awaited acceptance speech for the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize and at a time when Myanmar is making tenuous democratic progress. Her scheduled return to Myanmar by the end of the month gets her back in time to attend the July 4 reconvening of Parliament, which was announced Tuesday night on state television. The parliamentary session will be considering crucial legislation, including media regulation and foreign investment. Cheerful and energetic at Yangon’s airport, Suu Kyi waved to journalists and passengers as she headed to the departure lounge. Asked about her trip, Suu Kyi told reporters she expects it to be eye-opening. “Each country will be different. I will know how backward (Myanmar) is when I reach the other countries,” Suu Kyi said. Ocean’s Salt Measured from Space This week marks the one-year anniversary of a NASA mission designed to help answer an age-old question: How salty is the sea? The Aquarius instrument aboard the Satélite de Aplicaciones Científicas (SAC)-D is providing some of the first largescale pictures of ocean salinity around the world, and how it changes from week to week — which influences everything from ocean circulation to the global water cycle. The satellite was launched on June 10, 2011. Over the last year, the instrument has sent back data showing the sometimes striking variations in salinity in the world’s oceans and seas, and has also confirmed Earth-bound observations. Oceanographers have long known that the Atlantic Ocean is saltier than the Pacific and Indian oceans, and the satellite images show the same. It has also shown that the world’s longest rivers carry tremendous amounts of fresh water

from l a n d and spread plumes far into the sea. And in the tropics, extra rainfall makes equatorial waters somewhat fresher. The satellite technically measures the “brightness temperature” of a tiny layer atop ocean waters — a slice just 0.4 inches (1 centimeter) thick. Land masses tend to be “brighter” than water, so

any measurements near the coast are skewed by their proximity to land. But as the mission progresses, NASA engineers should be able to sort out the signals in the data caused by bright land, and get the true measure of salinity in coastal areas.

A world of pinching and grabbing virtual objects in the air still seems more like “Minority Report” than reality, but MIT’s Tether glove may help usher in such futuristic interfaces. Glove wearers can make gestures to create or move around 3D objects in a shared virtual space viewed through handheld tablet screens. That hands-on approach for a shared virtual workspace came out of MIT’s Tangible Media Group. An MIT video shows how people can use either the motiontracked glove or a multitouch tablet screen to draw spirals, create cubes and spheres, and work together to arrange virtual objects in patterns such as ascending or descending lines. “The system allows input through capacitive touch on the display and a motiontracked glove,” according to the MIT website. “When placed behind the display, the user’s hand extends into the virtual world, enabling the user to interact with objects directly.” One video example shows a person drawing spirals on a tablet screen and moving the tablet backward to create a 3D spiraling shape in the virtual workspace. That translates a familiar 2D gesture on a common consumer device into 3D results. Another case shows how glove wearers can use pinching gestures between the thumb and various fingers to grab and move around virtual objects, or even stretch the corners of a virtual cube — a wire frame box appears around the objects being highlighted. Quickly touching together two fingers can also make certain objects appear or disappear. MIT’s system allows people to work together on the same virtual space while standing side by side, but it can also supposedly work with remote human partners. Still, the concept is more of an impressive tech demo than a gadget ready to hit the market anytime soon — it relies upon five Vicon cameras to track the glove and head motions of human users.

To strengthen the security, both for daily activities and international events, the Chief of Bali Police, Budi Gunawan, prepared a sophisticated device in the form of Police Mobile Command (PMC) for securing the opening of the International Drug Enforcement Conference (IDEC) in Nusa Dua, Tuesday (Jun 12). Such device was the only one in Bali and served as a security device, either in daily activities or large-scale events. “Previously, Bali Police had a device named the Mobile Communication of Police Patrol Center or Satellite CommunicationMobile (Satellite Commob),” said Director of Traffic Affairs of Bali Police, Syamsul Bahri, last Tuesday. However, said Syamsul, the PMC device was more sophisticated than Commob. With such device, the entire regional police in Indonesia, including National Police Headquarters in Jakarta, could directly monitor

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LOS ANGELES — When Grammy Awards producers learned of Whitney Houston’s death less than 24 hours before the live telecast, they scrapped parts of the script, added performances and puzzled over how best to honor the Grammy-winning singer who died unexpectedly at age 48.

Host LL Cool J said that addressing the Grammy audience at the Staples Center after Houston’s death was “definitely the most challenging moment I’ve faced in my career.” He decided to open with a prayer, and producers agreed, though none could recall another network TV event that began as such. This and other last-minute changes made to the 54th annual Grammy Awards are chronicled in a new documentary, “A Death in the Family: The Show Must Go On,” which premiered Monday at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The screening of the 25-minute documentary and 14minute highlight reel of past Grammy performances was also a not-so-subtle push for Emmy votes. “We’d love to have you consider us when you vote,” said Ken Ehrlich, executive producer of the Grammys for the past 32 years. “We’ve been nominated before and not won.” He added that executives at CBS, which broadcasts the Grammys, suggested Ehrlich’s team produce the documentary, which can be seen on the Grammy.com website and

at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. Emmy ballots are due at the end of the month. The documentary, though it deals with show changes made after Houston’s death, isn’t a downer. Ehrlich said that about an hour before he heard about Houston, he’d experienced a career high: Paul McCartney, who was set to close the show, asked if he might perform a Beatles medley from “Abbey Road,” and maybe it could include a guitar jam with the likes of Dave Grohl, Joe Walsh and Bruce Springsteen. The number came together just before Houston’s death. Ehrlich said the magic of that McCartney moment made him feel “like maybe there is a God.” “God said, I’m going to give this to him, but I’m not going to let him get too cocky,” the veteran producer said in an interview before the screening. After Houston died, the challenge was to “do something that was respectful to Whitney,” Ehrlich said, “that set a tone that also didn’t lose the fact that there were thousands of people who were coming to this event because they had done something remarkable this year on their own, and they needed to be treated with respect as well.”

NEW YORK - Lindsay Lohan is in negotiations to star in Paul Schrader’s upcoming film “The Canyons,” a thriller penned by Bret Easton Ellis. Ellis wrote the novel “American Psycho,” which was later adapted into a film. Adult film star James Deen has already signed up for the role of Christian, while Lohan would co-star as Tara. Lohan would like to do the film and the filmmakers like her for it, as evidenced by Ellis’ tweet announcing her joining the cast earlier today. “I am beyond thrilled that James Deen and Lindsay Lohan will be playing the parts of Christian and Tara,” he tweeted. Braxton Pope, a producer on the film, said that the “Mean Girls” star’s talent has been lost amidst all the reports about her personal life. They have been looking at her for some time. “This gets overwhelmed by publicity and her personal tumult, but Lindsay is a very talented actress,” producer Pope told TheWrap. “She’s not in the same genus as Kim Kardashian or Paris Hilton. She’s the real deal.” Lohan has already come in to do work with Schrader, which a cinematographer filmed. That said, her place in the project is not set in stone, as it is incumbent upon

villages and central market. “So far, the marketing chain of the agricultural products is too long so that it turns inefficient. To that end, the chain must be cut off. By doing so, the agricultural products can be marketed directly to con-

sumers,” said Bagus Udayana in Denpasar, Tuesday (Jun 12). According to him, the shorter the agricultural marketing chain between farmers and consumers, the greater the profits would be obtained by farmers. To that end, local governments should support the capacity of farmers so that they could sell the agricultural products directly to consumers. Aside from cutting off the long marketing chain, the governments also needed to establish an agro market in each regency and municipality. For strengthening the farmers, the role of

the associations and farmer groups was highly required so that farmers could be independent and no too much relied on the government projects. “It’s time for Bali to lead to agro-industry so that the agricultural products can be absorbed. As a result, farmers will easily market their products. Then, existence of the agro-industries will be able to reduce unemployment and poverty,” he said. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Indonesia Farmers Association

(HKTI) of Bali, Prof. Nyoman Suparta, earlier had said that local agricultural trade system was inefficient. No wonder if the income of farmers was still low and the rice did not have the same quality standard. So far, the rice milling companies purchased grain at quite expensive price from brokers. On the one hand, the brokers were benefited because they purchased grains at very cheap price from farmers.
