JAKARTA – Indonesia’s President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said on Sunday Asia could be “the continent of the future” but must first confront the challenges of rising demand for food, energy and water. Speaking at the start of a twoday World Economic Forum on East Asia, an event drawing political leaders and industry chiefs from across the region, Yudhoyono said Asia’s growth will put it at the heart of the global economy.
“Asia, more than any other region, can help achieve a strong, sustainable and balanced world economy,” Yudhoyono said. “Asia certainly has the resources, opportunity and most importantly, confidence to shape the international system.” The forum — which is meeting under the banner of “Responding to New Globalism” — aims to tackle critical issues facing the region including rising demand for resources and its response to the ever-present threat of natural disasters. After half year being hit by extreme weather, Singaraja farmers are now starting to plant sugar again as they have been told the summer or dry season will last until September confirmed by Head of Buleleng Forestry and Plantation Agency, Ir. Komang Gede Yasa, last Sunday (12/6). Even so it is still suggested for farmers to be aware of sudden extreme weather as these plants were suppose to be planted from

The situation has also caused a social gap between the society in the source and the end of river as those in the end still depends on farming (rice fields) while the source used the forest. Apparently those who have depended on the plantation got greater income and manage to build a better house or bought cars. It is no longer a secret these people used the forests and to the people it is not the people’s fault it is happening, but the forestry police that haven’t been clear and not controlling it. “If they are forest police they should’ve been in the forest not on the end of the river as their office is there,” a resident stated. In other hand Bali House of Representatives Commission II member, I Ketut Suania, stated there has been a different understanding of society forest which is suppose to be making a forest of a land outside the protected forest which in this case the people have gone to the protected forest and used that protected forest. “This has to be clarified,” he stated. Besides that the Province Government should rethink on how to preserve these planted plants. “There was a starting budget in buying seeds and seedlings but then no longer controlled. Don’t blame them that they then went into the forest, I am sure about this because I have lived on the border of a forest,” he concluded. (olo)

After the police shooting in Palu, Central Sulawesi, the Central Sulawesi Police continued to chase the perpetrators. Though some perpetrators have been arrested, the hunting to the other perpetrators has not been stopped. Even, the results of the latest development, another perpetrator alleged to engage in the brutal acts was successfully captured. The perpetrator was Ali Mifta alias Fardan. He was arrested in the area of Jalan Trans Sulawesi, at Kesimbar Village, Paribo Regency, Central Sulawesi, Saturday (Jun 11) at 4:20 p.m. Capture of the perpetrator was conducted by the joint task force of Central Sulawesi Police, the ranks of Regional Unit and Special Detachment 88. “Fardan belonged to a terrorist group that had committed a military training in Aceh,” said a police resource on Sunday (Jun 12). So far, according to a resource person who wanted his name unpublished, it could not be ascertained whether Fardan was the perpetrator of the shooting against the three police officers occurred in front of BCA Palu not long ago. Police authority continued to conduct examination and development after the arrest of Fardan. “To be sure, Fardan has been registered in the wanted fu-

After long unheard, now the theft case of pratima or sanctified effigy occurred again in Buleleng. A pair of effigy representing male-female deity made up of perforated coins in the Puseh Temple of Pelapuan Customary Village, Busungbiu Subdistrict, was known to have vanished on Thursday (Jun 9). Chief of Customary Village, Jro Gede Made Pancer, 57, accompanied by Village Head I Nengah Rinta, Sunday (Jun 12), said the effigy was known to have vanished around 2:00 p.m. by the local temple priest, Jro Mangku Ketut Tirta, 60. At that time, Jro Mangku Tirta was cleaning up the temple area. He saw the door of the storing chamber open. Seeing the incident, Jro Mangku Tirta reported it to Village Head Nengah Rinta and subsequently submitted to the four customary hamlet chiefs. After checking into the storing chamber, it was known the couple effigy made entirely of perforated coins was not in place. Having been searched around the temple area, the apparatus then encountered the framework of effigy in the area of clan temple located in the east of Puseh Temple. Such wooden frame was found by the Chief of Bujangga Wesnawa clan, I Gede Siyadnya. Meanwhile, all coins set in the effigies had disap-
peared. “Its wooden frames were dumped by perpetrator in the temple area of Bujangga Wesnawa clan in the east of Puseh Temple,” he said. Jro Pancer admitted the Puseh temple was not locked every day because every morning, afternoon and evening there were people saying prayers. Though the material losses inflicted was not quite a few, but his party deeply regretted the incident. With the theft of sanctified effigies, the temple supported by 800 families should prepare new effigies to replace the missing ones. “If the new effigies are not available, on the ceremony they will be replaced with gegaluhan effigy made of young coconut leaf,” he said. Village Head Nengah Rinta admitted that condition of his village was in difficulties. Many chicken and pig theft occurred at the village. However, for this case, Rinta truly believed if the effigy theft was not committed by his residents. “We believe the culprit is not our resident,” he affirmed. In the meantime, Chief of Busungbiu Police Ketut Sukada last Sunday confirmed the occurrence of effigy theft. The case was just known on Thursday, but it was just reported on Friday (Jun 10). Philippine leader: grafttainted projects stopped Associated Press Writer
KAWIT, Philippines – President Benigno Aquino III said Sunday his government has stopped several graft-tainted projects and cut bureaucratic perks, allowing it to raise extra money to feed the poor, equip troops and improve the country’s image among investors. But Aquino acknowledged in an Independence Day speech that formidable problems continue to plague the impoverished Southeast Asian nation, including shortages of jobs, schools, doctors and hospitals and a dependence on imported rice despite its vast farmlands. More than a century after rising up against Spanish colonizers, Filipinos still have not been liberated from social ills like poverty because they have failed to eradicate corruption, Aquino said in Kawit town in Cavite province south of Manila where revolutionaries declared independence from Spain 113 years ago. “If we want to liberate the country, we need to free the government and ourselves from greed,”
Aquino said on the balcony of a historic, flag-draped mansion. Aquino said without elaborating that his administration had stopped graft-tainted projects in several government agencies, including the Department of Public Works and Highways and the Laguna Lake Development Authority. Officials have looked into alleged irregularities in a major dredging project at the Laguna Lake agency. Presidential spokeswoman Abigail Valte said close to $23 million (1 billion pesos) worth of contracts were halted at the public works and highways department alone because they were not properly bidded out, lacked required documents or had other irregularities. Slashing high salaries and perks of executives in government-owned corporations increased their revenues to $686 million (29.5 billion pesos), some of which was used to build 20,000 houses for soldiers and police and hire 10,000 additional nurses for rural clinics, Budget Secretary Florencio Abad said.

Erdogan, whose AK has transformed Muslim Turkey into one of the world’s fastest-growing economies and ended a cycle of military coups, won nearly 50 percent of the vote in a parliamentary vote on Sunday. The results, which are likely to boost financial markets on Monday, mean AK will be forced to compromise with other parties to press on with plans to replace the existing charter, written almost 30 years ago during a period of military rule. “The new constitution requires consensus and dialogue with other
parties and the society at large,” Cengiz Aktar, a professor at Istanbul’s Bahcesehir University, told Reuters. “We will see if Erdogan is ready for these with his majority or will he go his own way and impose his own views on Turkey — in which case we will have difficult times.” The vote marked AK’s highest electoral score since it first came to power in 2002, but failed to win Erdogan enough seats to call a referendum on a planned new constitution.
Preliminary results based on 99.8 percent of the vote show AK winning 49.9 percent, or 325 seats, just below the 330 required for a plebiscite, and less than the 331 of the 550 seats it had in the last parliament. Critics fear Erdogan, who has a reputation for not liking dissent, might use the victory to cement power, limit freedoms and persecute opponents. ROME – Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi faced the prospect of a fresh humiliation Monday following local election defeats, as Italians flocked to the polls to vote in opposition-backed referendums. Although the government had urged its supporters to stay away, turnout was already at 41 percent late Sunday and voting continues on Monday, suggesting the 50 percent needed for the polls to have legal validity was within reach. Many of those who have turned out to vote are opposition supporters.
It is widely assumed that referendum questions opposing a return to nuclear power and in favour of revoking a law that gives Berlusconi a form of legal immunity will be approved. The success of the vote is therefore likely to hinge on the turnout and after Sunday, opposition parties backing the vote were optimistic. “It’s like the ascension of K2, but I already see the summit,” said Antonio di Pietro, the leader of the opposition Italy for Values party. “We can get there together.” The main opposition Democratic Party also felt that victory was within reach.
“Turnout is high and the quorum is now very close,” said a spokesman. The nuclear referendum would put a definitive stop to government plans to restart Italy’s atomic energy programme by 2014, plans that are already under a temporary moratorium following the Fukushima disaster in Japan. Voters could also quash a law, approved last year, that allows Berlusconi to skip court appearances because of official obligations. The prime minister, 74, is a defendant in three trials involving allegations of bribery, fraud and paying for sex with a 17-year-old girl.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Mexico finds 210 migrants crammed in truck Associated Press Writer
TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, Mexico – Mexican police on Sunday discovered 210 mainly Central and South American migrants crammed inside a truck near the country’s southern border, an immigration official said. The dehydrated and hungry migrants were found when the truck was searched at a highway checkpoint, said the immigration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk on the record. Police detained the truck’s driver and his assistant, both of whom will be transferred to a maximum-security prison, the official said. The migrants were mainly from Brazil, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua, but also from India. They were packed so tightly into the truck that they had to remain standing, official said. The official said the migrants had not eaten in 24 hours and were now being given food and water. They are being held at a Chiapas

According to its website the World Economic Forum is an independent organization bringing together top business leaders, governments and academics to discuss responses to challenges facing the world. JAKARTA - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has called on the Indonesian government to boost infrastructure development in pursuit of higher economic growth. “Indonesia has the potential to see dynamic economic growth in the upcoming years. Infrastructure development is of great significance to boost economic growth needed by Indonesia to create more jobs and reduce poverty,” ADB Managing Director General Rajat M Nag said in a press briefing on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum on East Asia (WEF-EA) here on Sunday. Infrastructures are long-term investment, he said adding the quality of Indonesia‘s infrastructures is still lower than those of other ASEAN member countries. “Inadequate and low quality infrastructures are particularly found

He added however that Indonesia has made significant progress in good governance over the past few years. “Hopefully, the government can control the political situation because (uncontrolled political) situation can have a detrimental impact on the investment climate,” he said. The cell was linked to an April suicide bomb attack in a prayer room at a police compound in Cirebon in West Java. Police also foiled a bid to set off a massive bomb near a Christian church on the outskirts of Jakarta at Easter. No one was killed in those incidents. Indonesia has been rocked by a series of attacks staged by regional terror network Jemaah Islamiyah in recent years, including the 2002 Bali bombings which killed 202 people.

PALU - Police in Palu, Central Sulawesi arrested 7 suspected terrorists in Kasimbar village, Parigi Moutong district, Central Sulawesi province, on Saturday and Sunday. Parigi Moutong police spokesman Adjunct Senior Commissioner Hondawantri Naibaho said here on Sunday that one of the suspects, identified by his initials as AM, was arrested on Saturday evening.
While the six other suspects with initials Fr, Ad, Kl, Ys, AY and Dm were arrested on Sunday evening after AM was interrogated by the police. They were arrested not far from the location where AM was nabbed at the house of Kl. AM was suspected for involvement in terrorist rings in Aceh and Cirebon, West Java, but fled to Central Sulawesi two months ago. In Central Sulawesi AM stayed with Kl in Kasimbar village. Besides
arresting the 7 terror suspects, the police also seized some evidence; include a remote control, two cellular phones, batteries, bolts, and a number of books on religious teaching. JAKARTA - The Indonesian Corruption Watch (ICW) has noted that 45 corruptors have fled overseas over the past 10 years to escape the law. “According to our records, of the 45 corruptors, 20 have fled to Singapore,” ICW`s Deputy Coordinator Emerson Yuntho said in a discussion on “Polemic: Corruptors Escape, the State Comes Up Short” here Saturday. Singapore has been one of the corruptors‘ favorite destinations because it is considered to have several “added values”. Geographically, Singapore is close to Indonesia so those corruptors still could run their businesses from Singapore, and there is no extradition treaty between Indonesia and Singapore. “Corruptors who have been under overseas travel ban, are usually helped by Indonesians who travel
to Singapore to communicate (with them),” he said. The Indonesian government has offered extradition cooperation to the Singaporean government since 2007 but there has been no follow up. Indonesian corruptors staying in Singapore cannot be forced to return to Jakarta because they could file a lawsuit with a Singapore court to protect themselves. Corruptors like Gayus Tambunan were willing to return Indonesia thanks to persuasive approaches, he said. The latest prominent escapees are Muhammad Nazaruddin and Nunun Nurbaeti. Nazaruddin was relieved from his position as the Democrat Party treasurer after he was widely reported to be implicated in an alleged corruption case at the sports ministry and an attempt to bribe a Constitutional Court official. The immigration office had noted that Nazaruddin left Indonesia for Singapore on Monday (May 23) night.

The Head of Bali Cultural Department, I Ketut Suastika, said “there is four activities which ware held since the morning until at night.” He explained that the event start at 8 am through 4 pm which is the “Utsawa Dharma Gita”, the holy religious song which is being held in five stages throughout Art center. There is also a dance performance entitled “Cupak Ngandeng Ratu” which is being performed by Bangun Sakti Art Group from Banjar Sedang, Badung. There is also women gong kebyar performance from Gianyar Regency and Denpasar City. The gong kebyar is held in Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) Denpasar open stage, next to Art Center Denpasar. Suastika said that there is also angklung parade, one of the traditional Balinese music and performed by Sekar Sandat Art Group from Tabanan and Dharma Santi Art
Group from Banjar Gaga, Bangli Regency. The BAF will be held for one month started on June 10 through July 9, 2011 and there are art exhibition, competition and parade. There are also discussion and movie festival in the BAF as well as households and handicrafts exhibition. The art competition and parade is meant to make the artists in Bali to be more creative and work hard to develop their skills which lead to the development of Balinese traditional art. By developing the art, more people will want to involved in it so the conservation of the art and culture which attract many tourists to Bali can be maintained for the future.

Mass Rabies Vaccination Conducted In Bali Antara
DENPASAR - Mass rabies vaccination was conducted again in Denpasar city on Sunday in an effort to make Bali a rabies-free island for tourism. “As a tourist destination, Denpasar should be free from rabies in order to give a sense of safety to the local people as well as tourists visiting the island,” Denpasar Mayor IB Rai Dharmawijaya said at the sidelines of a mass rabies vaccination drive here on Sunday. Rai Mantra said there must be awareness of the whole community in Bali to support the effort of reducing the danger of rabies transmission to people. He said the local people should have awareness to have their pets such as dogs, cats, and monkeys vaccinated regularly by the Denpasar city government. Meanwhile, local Animal Husbandry, Marine and Fisheries Office spokesman Dewa Made Ngurah also called on the local community to immediately report to the office if they were bitten by the rabies carrier animals. “In addition the local officials should eliminate the rabies carrier animals and facilitate the local
community to obtain anti rabies vaccine at the nearby hospitals and clinics,” Dewa Made said. He explained that the mass vaccination of 1,680 rabies carrier animals was conducted at six villages in Denpasar Selatan subdistrict on Saturday and Sunday. According to Dewa Made, the mass rabies vaccination would be continued on June 19-20 at a
number of villages in Denpasar Barat sub-district and then on July 9-10 in Denpasar Utara sub-district. “In our effort to realize rabiesfree Denpasar, we have to register the rabies carrier animals, to make rabies familiarization, to control the population of the animals, and to take immediate action if there as rabies case,” Dewa Made said.

Similarly, beauty also can toss the imagination, soothe the mind and draw people to get near. Bali has many sources of that beauty offering the charm of nature, culture or adventure. By maintaining traditions inspired by Hinduism, Balinese people go on running in harmony with the time. In other words, they do not feel inferior because of inheriting those traditions. Beauty in the form of various dance movements has been introduced since early ages. On seeing a dance staged, a toddler may watch it attentively or its fingers move and move as if imitating the movement of the dance. Virtually all customary villages in Bali have gamelan troupe. This troupe plays important role in expressing their entertainment arts and accompanying every ritual activity. This existence gives opportunity to villagers from child to adult to express their artistic talent especially in dance, drama and gamelan arts. Young girls under twelve or elementary school age have a chance to participate in performing Rejang Dance. By wearing white and yellow costumes and floral decoration on head, they dance beautifully accompanied by gamelan music. Rejang Dance is one of the sacred dances performed in relation to the organization of temple anniversary or odalan. Other than putting a
basic love to their tradition, they also show devotional service or ngatur ayah through the arts. When they grow older, right on entering secondary school, they join customary village youth club or Sekaa Taruna. Here, with their male friends and their brothers and sisters start to learn about organization. Many things can be learned through this organization. Since it has affiliation to customary village, they can learn about the making of some simple oblation under guidance of senior oblation maker and various traditional arts. In Bali, this youth club actually play important role in preparing young generation to maintain their valuable cultural heritages or to prepare themselves for inheriting customary responsibility. With their male counterpart, here the young girls also learn to play drama or more complex traditional arts. Popular genres of performance showed are pure entertainment and the one in combination with sacred dance. The latter usually features Calonarang. This magical drama involves a combination of male and female players. In essence, this Calonarang drama highlights the endless fight between truth and untruth symbolizing by sanctified effigies or tapakan like Rangda and Barong. By and large, it is also associated with ritual events at local temple. In the following stage, when

o 1/2 kg (1 1/4 lb) fillet of pork -or leg of pork o 1 tb Clear soya sauce o 2 tb Plain flour o 1/2 ts Powdered ginger o 20 g (4 oz) button mushrooms o 4 Cloves garlic o 1 sl of root ginger, about 2 cm -(1") across and 1/2 cm -(1/4") thick o 3 tb Dark soya sauce o Pepper or a pinch of chilli -powder o 2 tb water o 2 tb Medium dry sherry or rice -wine (optional) o 2 ts Lemon juice o 6 tb Oil or pork fat
Directions This, as its name suggests, is pork cooked in soya sauce. It is a particular favourite with my own husband and children, who always know when it is about to appear on the table because the ginger and garlic frying in the sauce smell so deliciously savoury. Cut the pork into small cubes. Put the flour into a bowl and add the clear soya sauce and ginger powder, mixing them well together. Coat the pork with the mixture and then let it stand for at least 30 minutes. Clean and slice the mushrooms. Peel the garlic and ginger and slice them very thin; you can use these thin slices as they are, or cut them again into very tiny sticks. Heat the oil or fat in a wok or thick frying pan and fry the meat, half of it at a time, turning it from time to time, for 5 minutes. Repeat the process for the remaining half of the meat. The flour that coated the meat will tend to stay in the pan or stick to the bottom of it, but leave it there-it will thicken the sauce later. Now take most of the oil out of the pan, leaving only about two tablespoons which you then heat again. In this, fry the tiny slices of garlic and ginger and the mushrooms, stirring continuously, for i minute. Add the soya sauce, the water and the meat. mix well, season with pepper or chilli powder, and stir continuously for 1 or 2 minutes. just before serving, add the sherry or rice wine and the lemon juice. Serve hot. This dish keeps extremely well in the freezer, and it is worth making a large quantity from, say, half a leg-of pork, which is much cheaper than buying pork fillet. If you are going to freeze your Babi Kecap, however, do not add the sherry or lemon juice at the time of cooking. To serve from the freezer, thaw the meat out completely and heat quickly on a high flame for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring or shaking the pan well all the time. JAKARTA/CAIRO – French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde stretched her lead in the race for the IMF’s top job on Sunday when Indonesia became the first big developing economy to back her publicly. An 11th-hour challenge from Israel’s respected central bank chief Stanley Fischer, announced on Saturday, looked a long shot. Israel’s finance minister conceded that the politics of the succession battle did not favor the IMF’s former number-two official. Indonesia, like many emerging economies, was previously noncommittal about its choice for the next boss of the International Monetary Fund as Southeast Asian capitals discussed whether to put forward a candidate from the region. Lagarde has secured the support of the European Union plus a handful of smaller countries but needs to secure backing from bigger emerging economies. tions, and has high integrity and skills.” Several large emerging economies have been critical of the longstanding tradition of the IMF being led by Europeans. But they have refrained from backing Mexican central bank governor Agustin Carstens, the only well-known challenger from an emerging economy until Fischer’s announcement. The French finance minister, who is on a world tour to drum up support, said during a Sunday stop in Cairo she had got “very affirmative” support from Egypt. In a further boost for Lagarde, the United Arab Emirates declared its support for her on Sunday. The search to fill the top job at the world’s main rescue-lending agency began after Frenchman Dominique Strauss-Kahn resigned in May, charged with the attempted rape of a New York hotel maid, which he denies. The move by Fischer was a surprise. At 67, he is two years past the age limit for applicants and the
IMF would have to change those rules for him to stay in the race. Seeking to capitalize on respect for his work as a deputy IMF managing director between 1994 and 2001 and as a former World Bank chief economist, Fischer played up his expertise advantage over Lagarde, a former corporate lawyer who does not have a formal economics background. Fischer told the Wall Street Journal that when serious economic problems arise, IMF staffers often offer conflicting advice. “Without having that training, it’s very hard to know, who’s right and who’s wrong. You have to have a framework to think through the problems.” Earlier on Sunday, Israeli Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz said Fischer’s “chances are not great” due to politics and his age. “Were it purely professional one would be hard pressed to find a better person than Fischer,” Steinitz told army radio. Fischer was born in Zambia and holds both Israeli and U.S.
citizenship. The former could pose a problem for Arab countries and the latter because the IMF job normally goes to a European on the grounds that a U.S. national already gets to fill another post, the top job at the World Bank. Fischer’s IMF record may also be questioned in Asia, where he remains associated with harsh IMF-backed austerity measures and free-market policies that several countries in the region were forced to adopt in the late 1990s in return for aid to counter a financial crisis — including Indonesia. The IMF board is due to choose the next managing director by June 30. The United States and the European Union hold almost enough votes jointly to choose the winning candidate. Nonetheless, Lagarde’s ability to clinch support from large developing countries is vital. In 2000, the Clinton administration blocked Germany’s Caio KochWeser after his bid for the IMF top job failed to get broad support beyond Europe. One potential pitfall for Lagarde is an inquiry in France into her role in a controversial compensation payment to a French businessman. Lagarde has
said she has no concerns about the case. Whoever runs the IMF may end up with more than the world’s large post-recession debts to worry about, after revelations that the Washington-based IMF’s sensitive databases and economic information archives may have fallen prey to cyber hackers. Lagarde’s latest campaign stops included Saudi Arabia on Saturday. Mexico’s Carstens visited New Delhi on Friday and is due to visit Washington on Monday. Big emerging economies such as China, India, Brazil and South Africa have demanded that Europe relinquish its 65-year grip on the IMF’s top job, which should go to whoever is the best qualified candidate. But so far, only a few smaller developing countries have backed Carstens. “There is not the capacity to build consensus among the emerging market nations behind one candidate, irrespective of who that person is, and besides that the Europeans feel very strongly,” said Ian Bremmer, president of political risk consultancy Eurasia Group. “I think it’s virtually impossible to unseat Lagarde at this point.”
Allied World to buy Transatlantic for $3.2 billion Reuters
NEW YORK – Allied World Assurance Co Holdings agreed to buy Transatlantic Holdings for $3.2 billion in stock, creating a specialty insurer and reinsurer with broader reach and product offering. Shareholders of Transatlantic, which was once controlled by American International Group Inc, will receive 0.88 Allied World share each, or $51.10 per share, representing a 16.1 percent premium over Transatlantic’s close on Friday. The deal allows New Yorkbased Transatlantic to change
domicile to Switzerland, where Allied World is headquartered and which is more favorable from a tax perspective, a source familiar with the situation said. The deal also bolsters Transatlantic’s management. Allied World Chairman and CEO Scott Carmilani will be the president and chief executive of the new company. Transatlantic CEO Robert Orlich will retire when the deal closes, which is expected in the fourth quarter of this year. AIG owned a majority stake in Transatlantic until it was forced to sell it off as part of its efforts to repay the U.S. governments for
a massive crisis-era bailout. Experts have been anticipating more reinsurer deals, especially in Bermuda, for a while now, predicting that a soft pricing environment would prompt well-capitalized companies to merge. But these deals have been relatively rare, in part because the “social question” — who will lead the combined company — is often not resolved. Allied World and Transatlantic held one-on-one talks, which started earlier this year, the source said. With Transatlantic’s Orlich willing to retire, this deal an-
nouncement could prompt a rival bidder to emerge. The combined company will operate under a holding company structure, with the corporate name TransAllied Group Holdings, offering specialty insurance and reinsurance products and services via two brands — Transatlantic Reinsurance and Allied World Insurance. Transatlantic shareholders will own about 58 percent of the combined company, with Allied World shareholders owning the rest. Both boards have approved the deal. The new company will have an 11-member board, with six seats
appointed by Transatlantic and the rest by Allied World. The combined entity will have total invested assets of $21 billion, total shareholders’ equity of nearly $7 billion and total capital of $8.5 billion. Goldman Sachs and Moelis & Co acted as financial advisers to Transatlantic, and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and Lenz & Staehelin acted as U.S. and Swiss legal counsel. ‘Mormon,’ ‘War Horse’ the big winners at Tonys Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK – A slew of acclaimed shows were up for Tony Awards in a remarkably competitive year, but a production that wasn’t even eligible still managed to cast a shadow — well, shall we make that a web? — over the proceedings. On a night when the hilariously profane “The Book of Mormon” reigned supreme, the famously troubled “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” got attention both positive and negative at Sunday’s Tonys. There was a performance — certainly rare for a show that hasn’t even opened yet — plus a plug from its famous composers, Bono and The Edge. And of course, there were the obligatory “Spider-Man” jokes, without which no awards show would be complete. There were jokes even about the ubiquity of “Spider-Man” jokes. Host Neil Patrick Harris said he would limit himself to a 30-second speed round, getting his biggest laugh with a quip
about the show’s ousted original director: “Julie Taymor knew it was over when she woke and found the head of `War Horse’ in her bed.” Even Bono was making jokes, saying he and The Edge “used to be famous for being in U2.” Then he introduced Reeve Carney and Jennifer Damiano, who play Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson, and a new ballad they perform in the retooled show. (As for the flying Spidey himself? Not in sight.) Still, the breadth represented by the evening’s nominees and winners showed that there’s a lot going on in Broadway theater that doesn’t involve comic-book superheroes. At the top of the heap was “Mormon,” which has taken Broadway by storm this season. It captured nine awards, including best musical, for its offensive yet good-natured look at two missionaries who arrive in Uganda and get way more than they bargained for, including gun-toting warlords, whole villages infected with HIV and a running gag about maggots in a man’s scrotum.

PARIS – Embattled farmers in the Sahel countries of West Africa can take heart from a new study that should boost the accuracy of rainfall prediction in one of the world’s most fragile regions. Sharp differences in moisture in small patches of land can trigger precious rain, says the paper, published online on Sunday in the journal Nature Geoscience. Researchers from Britain, France and Australia looked at satellite data that located nearly 4,000 rainstorms which occurred in the Sahel between 2006-2010. Between 80 and 90 percent of rainfall in the Sahel comes from this kind of storm, which can brew suddenly when moisture-laden air lifts from heated earth. The scientists then overlaid this data with satel-
lite information on soil moisture. They found that an area where there are large differences in soil moisture plays a big role in making rain. A moist area just 10 to 40 kilometres (six to 25 miles) across can trigger rain provided it is next to a far drier patch. This small-is-beautiful finding contrasts with conventional weather models. These tend to calculate the probability of rainfall on the basis of huge swathes of moist land and on the presence of rain-making features like mountain ranges. “Rainfall is difficult to predict, par-
ticularly in regions such as the Sahel where huge storms can grow from nothing in a matter of hours,” said lead author Chris Taylor of Britain’s Centre for Ecology and Hydrology. “We found that areas with contrasting soil moisture can play an important role in the creation of new storms, a factor not accounted for in current climate models. “(...) This effect is important for typically one in eight storms, in a region particularly prone to droughts and associated crop failures.” In areas where there are these sharp differences in soil moisture, rainstorms are twice as likely compared to regions where the moisture level is uniform. The rain often falls around 10 kilometres (six miles) upwind of the moist patch, not downwind, Taylor explained to AFP.

According to Twitter, more than 60 percent of users are from outside the U.S., while more than 70 percent of Facebook users reside outside the U.S. Both companies are incorporating more languages to help boost usage in lowgrowth regions. This has resulted in explosive growth - more than 4,300 percent in Taiwan, more than 3,800 percent in Brazil, and more than 2,900 percent in Thailand. And that’s just the past two years! This brings me to today’s crucial mandate. Be vigilant about maintaining a clean virtual image, especially if, like me, your business crosses international borders. Yes, there’s LinkedIn and other professional sites, but don’t fool yourself. Facebook is not personal or private and it will be viewed and used by others to form an opinion about you.

Negotiators said they had to overcome fierce opposition from the Vatican and conservative Muslim countries to get the final communique to even mention the latex contraceptive. Instead of talking simply about the importance of abstinence and
fidelity, the statement stresses the “correct and consistent use of condoms.” The Vatican led protests at the summit final session. “It is a first at the UN General Assembly,” said a diplomat who took part in two months of hardfought negotiations on the text. “We are very happy about this. It is very explicit and will definitely help our work to overcome resistance and fears about condoms,” said George Tembo, head of the AIDS/HIV department at the UN Population Fund. The global need for condoms to combat HIV and for family planning has shot up from an estimated 13 billion in 2004 to about 19 bil-
lion in 2010, according to the UN Population Fund. Tembo said the UN agency gave out about 3.2 billion condoms in target countries in 2010, up from 2.7 billion the year before. India’s Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad told the summit about the “door-to-door distribution” of male and female condoms by thousands of social health activists in his country. The condoms will initially be delivered to homes in 17 Indian provinces covering an approximate population of 200 million people “and will be scaled up to cover the entire country soon,” the minister said.

MANCHESTER - Former England manager Steve McClaren made a return to English soccer on Monday when he was named manager at Championship (second division) side Nottingham Forest. It will be the first time he has managed in England since his spell in charge of the national team ended in humiliation with the country failing to qualify for Euro 2008. He signed a three-year deal at Forest, who came close to promotion to the Premier League this season but lost in the playoff semifinals. He succeeds Billy Davies, who was sacked on Sunday. “The club moved quickly to secure his services as it is rare for a manager and coach of his undoubted calibre to be available,” Forest Chief Executive Mark Arthur said in a statement on the club website (www.nottinghamforest.co.uk). The 50-year-old McClaren has been keen to repair his tarnished reputation in England after his illfated spell in charge of the national team, when he was dubbed “The Wally with the Brolly” after putting up a big umbrella to shield himself from the rain during a
match. After being sacked by England in 2007 he took up a post at Twente Enschede and steered the club to their maiden Dutch title in 2010. Last year he became the first English coach at the helm of a Bundesliga club when he took over at VfL Wolfsburg but lasted just nine months in the job as the 2009 German champions became involved in the battle to avoid relegation. He was sacked in February. Before his stint as England boss he had been viewed as a promising manager having worked as an assistant to Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in 1999-2001 before being appointed manager at Middlesbrough, with whom he won the 2004 League Cup. He also took Middlesbrough to the 2006 UEFA Cup final, where they lost to Sevilla, and Forest will be hoping McClaren can have a similar impact at the club as they seek a return to the top flight. “Steve has a proven track record of coaching and managing at club level, having played a key role in helping Manchester United secure the Champions League trophy, three Premier League titles and an FA Cup,” Arthur said. “We are delighted to have him on board at the City ground.”

CHICAGO – Mexico sealed their Group A victory in the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a 4-1 triumph over Costa Rica. Andres Guardado scored twice, and Rafael Marquez and Pablo Barrera added a goal apiece for Mexico, the defending champions who won all three of their Group A matches despite a squad reduced to 17 players after five were withdrawn by Mexican football authorities after positive drug tests last month. The Mexican football federation is blaming the positive tests for clenbuterol on contaminated meat and has asked to replace the players, but CONCACAF officials have asked for more information before making a decision. Costa Rica finished second in Group A ahead of El Salvador, who trounced Cuba 6-1 earlier on Sunday. Both Costa Rica and El Salvador finished with four points, but the Costa Ricans hold the advantage on goal difference and sealed their quarterfinal spot. So far Mexico haven’t shown any sign that the absence of five players
is hurting them. Their 14 goals so far are the most of any team in the tournament, which is the regional championship for North and Central America and the Caribbean. Costa Rica were expected to pose Mexico’s toughest challenge in the group, but Marquez in the 16th and Guardado in the 19th staked Mexico to a quick 2-0 lead. Guardado scored again in the 25th, firing beneath one defender and Costa Rican keeper Keylor Navas. MIAMI – For Dirk Nowitzki, the resume is complete. He’s an NBA champion. For LeBron James, the agonizing wait continues for at least one more year. A season that began with Miami celebrating the signings of James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh — along with the promise of championships — ended on the very same floor, with the Dallas Mavericks hoisting the title trophy for the first time in their franchise history after beating the Heat 105-95 on Sunday night. The Mavericks won four of the series’ last five games, a turnabout that could not have been sweeter. “I really still can’t believe it,” said Nowitzki, who had 21 points and took home finals MVP honors. He and Jason Terry, who led the Mavs with 27 points, were the two remaining players from the Dallas team that lost to Miami in the 2006 finals. “Tonight,” Terry said, “we got vindication.” James did not. Not even close, and a year unlike any other ended they way they all have so far — with him still waiting for an NBA title. He scored 21 points for Miami, shook a few hands afterward, and departed before most of the Mavs tugged on their championship hats and T-shirts. Bosh had 19, Mario Chalmers 18 and Wade 17 for the Heat. “We worked so hard and so long for it,” Nowitzki said. “The team has had an unbelievable ride.” So did the Heat. Unlike Dallas, theirs wasn’t a joyride. “It goes without saying,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “You’re
never really prepared for a moment like this. ... Neither team deserved this championship more than the other, but Dallas earned it.” Make no mistake: Miami lost the finals, but the blame will be directed at James. Even he knew that after the way he left Cleveland with “The Decision” and all the animus that generated not just in Ohio but around the entire league, the only way he could silence some critics was with a title. “It doesn’t weigh on me,” James said. “At all.” Still, he got even more criticism — and a thinly veiled jab from his former owner with the Cavaliers, Dan Gilbert, who reveled in the moment on Twitter. “Mavs NEVER stopped & now entire franchise gets rings,” Gilbert wrote. “Old Lesson for all: There are NO SHORTCUTS. Mavs coach Rick Carlisle joined an elite group, those with NBA titles as both a player and a head coach. Others on that list include the presumably retired-for-good Phil Jackson, one of Carlisle’s mentors in K.C. It might still happen, of course. But even after 72 wins this season, including playoffs, the Heat lost the last game. We don’t run fast or jump high. These guys had each other’s backs. We played the right way. We trusted the pass. This is a phenomenal thing for the city of Dallas.”

COPENHAGEN – World number one Caroline Wozniacki won her fifth title of 2011 on Sunday with a comfortable 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Czech fourth seed Lucie Safarova in the final of her home tournament in Copenhagen. Wozniacki, the top seed, did not drop a set en route to the final and she kept the momentum going against Safarova, storming through the first set in 23 minutes then fending off a far more solid Safarova in a 45-minute second set. “Congratulations to Lucie for a good week and reaching the finals,” Wozniacki said at the trophy ceremony. “I wish her good luck in
Eastbourne and in the grass court season — hopefully we can both make it far at Wimbledon.” Safarova’s previous matches this week caught up with her. She had to come back from a set down to win all four of her other matches, including a semimiraculous comeback from 6-1, 40 down against Petra Martic in the semi-finals. “I’m disappointed, but it was a great week for me and I will be back next year,” Safarova said. “Congratulations to Caroline, she played really well today. It must be great for her to win at home — I can only imagine. I wish her all the best.” Wozniacki’s other titles in 2011 came at Dubai, Indian Wells, Charleston and Brussels.

Button wins chaotic Canadian GP Montreal - Jenson Button won a chaotic Canadian Grand Prix that finished over four hours after it started, and which included a red flag and five safety car periods, despite a penalty and two accidents. The Briton, however, is under investigation for clashes with Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. Button’s victory came only after Sebastian Vettel lost the lead on the final lap due to a driving error with just a handful of corners left. The world champion had dominated the race from the start but came under pressure from a flying Button in the end. Mark Webber was third for Red Bull, with Michael Schumacher in fourth position and Renault’s Vitaly Petrov completing the top five. Felipe Massa was the only Ferrari driver to finish, in sixth place, after beating Kamui Kobayashi to the spot right on the finish line. Jaime Alguersuari, Rubens Barrichello and Sebastien Buemi completed the points-paying positions. The event started under the safety car, as the race director deemed the track was too wet for a standing start. The move meant all drivers had to start will full wet tyres. The DRS was disabled while the track was wet. The safety car dived into the pits after five laps, and Vettel
managed to keep the lead despite an attack from Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso. Vettel’s team-mate Webber was not so lucky, however, and spun after making contact with the McLaren of Lewis Hamilton, the Australian dropping down to 14th position. Hamilton lost a few places too, and then dropped behind Button after going wide at the hairpin when fighting with Schumacher. The Briton tried to regain the position on lap seven, only to make contact with Button as he tried to pass on the main straight. Hamilton had been quicker coming out of the final corner and tried to pass his team-mate on the left, only for Button to close the door. Their cars made contact and Hamilton hit the wall, retiring from the race a few corners later and forcing the deployment of the safety car after parking his damaged car after Turn 5. Button pitted for repairs and rejoined in 12th place. The race was relaunched again on lap 12, with Vettel still leading from Alonso and Massa. Right after that, race control announced a drive-
through penalty for Button for having sped under the safety car. The Briton, who had opted for intermediate tyres in his first stop, dropped down to 14th. Leader Vettel and team-mate Webber pitted for full wets during the safety car period, the Australian also getting a new steering wheel as he was having problems shifting down gears. Several drivers followed suit into the pits, leaving Vettel in the lead again, ahead of Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi, who had not stopped, and Massa. Still under the safety car, Vettel told his team on the radio that it was impossible to drive and that the race should be stopped. On lap 25, Vettel’s wish was granted, and the race was red-flagged. Nearly two hours after it was stopped, the race was restarted behind the safety car and with mandatory full wet weather tyres. Heikki Kovalainen became the second retirement even before the safety car was back in, the Finn suffering a driveshaft failure on lap 30. After nine laps on track, the safety car drove into pits and the race was launched with Vettel on top, followed by Kobayashi, who managed to keep Massa at bay at the first corner. termediates tyre, although Vettel stayed out for a couple of laps, before the safety car was deployed again when Button made contact with Alonso when trying to pass at Turn 3. The Briton touched the Ferrari’s right rear wheel and sent the Spaniard into a spin, his car getting stuck on the kerbs. Button had to pit to change his punctured tyre. At the time of the fourth safety car of the day, Vettel led from Kobayashi, Massa, Heidfeld, Paul di Resta and Webber, with Button dropping down to the bottom of the field. The race resumed on lap 41, with Vettel opening a clear gap right away as Kobayashi held a train of cars behind him. There was a lot action behind the German, with several position changes which included a clash between Heidfeld and di Resta, the Scot having to pit for a new front wing. Heidfeld’s team-mate Petrov was given a drive-through penalty moments later for having overtaken while the safety car was still on track. Despite the track being still wet, the race director enabled the use of the DRS on lap 45.
By lap 50 - with 20 to go - Vettel was leading Kobayashi by over six seconds and Massa by seven, with Schumacher having charged to fourth. On lap 51, Webber became the first of the lead drivers to change to slick tyres, as Schumacher passed both Massa and Kobayashi and set his sights on Vettel, both still on intermediates. However, the Red Bull driver was still the quickest man on track, extending his lead over Schumacher to 11 seconds by lap 52. Schumacher pitted for slicks a lap later, with Massa following suit. Vettel changed his tyres a lap later, as team-mate Webber showed slicks were the way to go, lapping three seconds faster than the German. The world champion rejoined the race in the lead, while Massa was forced to come into the pits after damaging his front wing when losing control of his car while lapping an HRT. Webber finally captured third place from Schumacher with three laps left as Button closed in on Vettel. The world champion, however, resisted the pressure until the final lap, when he lost control of his car and let Button through with just a few corners left.
