‘Fault in Our Stars’ wins big at MTV awards LOS ANGELES - Teen tear-jerker “The Fault in Our Stars” and “American Sniper” actor Bradley Cooper were the big winners at the MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Cooper took Best Male Performance for “Sniper” -- Clint Eastwood’s Iraq war drama which was nominated for six Oscars and was a massive hit at the North American box office. Shailene Woodley took the honor in the female category -- as well as the special MTV Trailblazer Award -- for her turn in “The Fault in Our Stars” as a teenager with cancer who falls in love with a fellow young cancer sufferer (Ansel Elgort) at a support group. The duo’s powerful on-screen chemistry was recognized as they took home the award for Best Kiss and the film, which had cinema-goers in floods of tears, was named Movie Of The Year. Veteran Meryl Streep won the Best Villain prize for “Into the Woods,” while other offbeat awards included Best Fight, which went to Will Poulter and Dylan O’Brien for “The Maze Runner.” Zac Efron was honored for Best Shirtless Performance in “Neighbors” at the awards, which take a sideways look at the film industry and fall outside the traditional Hollywood awards season. Efron and Dave Franco were named Best Duo for the comedy, which received decidedly mixed reviews from film critics

on release. Robert Downey Jr. was recognized for his achievements down the decades with the Generation Award. The actor received the prize from Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth and Jeremy Renner, some of his fellow cast of “The Avengers: Age of Ultron”, which is about to be released. “In the 34 years that have passed since the birth of MTV, I’ve grown up, I’ve struggled, I’ve failed. I’ve partied way too much,” joked Downey, 50, clutching the award, which resembles a box of

popcorn. Sporting a pair of sunglasses, he then turned serious, adding: “I begged for second chances and literally clawed my way to the top.” As is usual for any awards night, many were more interested in what the great and good of Hollywood were showcasing on the red carpet. Johansson paraded in a pink jumpsuit that matched her rosy cheeks and lips, while Jennifer Lopez was striking in an all-black tuxedo-miniskirt combo and high heels that left little to the imagination. ‘Furious 7’ keeps speed, tops box office with $60.6 million NEW YORK — The highoctane thriller “Furious 7” maintained speed in its second week, racing away with $60.6 million at North American theaters and bringing its box-office total to a robust $252.5 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. Universal’s “Furious 7” more than lapped the competition. The only new wide release of the weekend, the rodeo romance “The Longest Ride,” opened with $13.5 million. That was good enough for third place for the Fox release, which stars Clint Eastwood’s son, Scott Eastwood. In second was the DreamWorks animated alien

adventure “Home,” which pulled in $19 million in its third week of release. But “Furious 7” continued to dominate the marketplace, dropping only 59 percent from its remarkable $147.2 million debut last weekend. Globally, it has already crossed $800 million in its first two weeks of release, according to Universal. The weekend international total — an eye-popping $195 million — was boosted by the film premiering in China on Sunday, where it earned an estimated $68.6 million in just one day. WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton jumped back into presidential politics on Sunday, making a much-awaited announcement she will again seek the White House in 2016 with a promise to serve as the “champion” of everyday Americans in a country with growing income inequality. Unlike eight years ago, when she ran and lost to Barack Obama, Clinton and her personal history weren’t the focus of the first message of her campaign. She made no mention of her time in the Senate and her four years as secretary of state, or her potential to make history as the nation’s first female president. Instead, the video is a collection of voters talking about their lives, their plans and aspirations for the future. “Americans have fought their way back from tough economic times. But the deck is still stacked in favor of those at the top. Everyday Americans need a champion, and I want to be that champion,” Clinton said near the end. Clinton’s video and new website are scant on policy specifics. But the message made an immediate play to win the support of liberal Democrats for whom economic inequality has become a defining

issue. Clinton now plans to head to the early-voting states of Iowa and New Hampshire, looking to connect with voters. Clinton hopes to avoid the same stumbles in 2008, when she entered the race as a heavy favorite only to be upset by Obama in Iowa. Clinton left Sunday in a van on a roughly 1,000-mile (1,600kilometer) road trip to Iowa from her New York home. She will tour a community college there on Tuesday and visit a produce distribution company on Wednesday. Her campaign said Sunday she would not hold her first rally and deliver a campaign kickoff speech until May. The 67-year-old Clinton brings a long public record to her second bid for the White House, a history that will both help and hurt her candidacy. Republicans were already pushing a message that

seeks to attach her to the scandalous upheavals of her husband Bill Clinton’s two-term presidency in the 1990s. Understanding that, her staff has said she intends to cast herself as a “tenacious fighter” determined to block the growing power of an increasingly right-wing Republican Party that has sought to block Obama’s agenda and now controls both chambers of Congress. Obama said on Saturday that he thinks Clinton “would be an excellent president.” As Obama’s secretary of state, Clinton used her four years as America’s top diplomat in an attempt to rebuild U.S. relations with countries around the world that had become critical of the American war in Iraq. Clinton enters the race with polls showing her in a strong position to succeed Obama. However, in the last half-century, the same political party has held the White House for three consecutive terms only once, during the administrations of Republicans Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. Republicans will try to counter Clinton’s strong resume by casting

her as someone who is not trustworthy. They have jumped on her use of a personal rather than a government email account and a server located in her home while she was secretary of state. They have also raised questions about donations from foreign governments to the Clinton family’s foundation. Republican Party chairman Reince Priebus said Clinton’s election would be tantamount to giving Obama a “third term.” Some Republicans sought to make foreign policy an issue at a time when the Obama administration is negotiating a nuclear deal with Iran and moving to restore diplomatic relations with Cuba. “We must do better than the Obama-Clinton foreign policy that has damaged relationships with our allies and emboldened our enemies,” said former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush in his own online video Sunday. Bush, the brother and son of former presidents. is widely expected to join the race for the Republican nomination. Clinton appears unlikely to face a formidable Democratic opponent in the primary elections.

Should she win the nomination, Clinton would face the winner of a crowded Republican primary field that could feature as many as two dozen candidates. Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, a favorite among libertarians, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, a champion of the ultraconservative tea party movement, have already entered the Republican race. Cuban-American Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida is expected to announce his bid to be the first Hispanic president on Monday. The 2016 campaign is likely to be the most expensive in history, with total spending on both sides expected to well exceed the more than $1 billion spent by each of the two nominees’ campaigns four years ago. ‘Rejecting reclamation of Benoa Bay’ rally held in Washington, D.C.

DENPASAR - Indonesians in Washington, D.C., held a peaceful rally on Aril 11, to express their rejection of Benoa Bay reclamation. The protest was held in front of the Reflection Pool of the United States Congress Building on the Capitol Hill. This rally one one of several such gatherings that took place in several different countries.

While singing the song “Reject Reclamation” demonstrators held a banner that read “Washington DC against the Destruction of Bali’s Environment, Reject Benoa Bay Reclamation”. Spokesman of the action, Made Supriatma, in an email said that they demanded that the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo revoke Regulation No.51/2014. The presidential regulation issued by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the end of his term of office was alleged to be mared with business interests. Regulation No.51/2014 gives a right of way to reclaim build on 700 hectares of the Benoa Bay conservation area. “One can easily imagine the benefits that investors hope reap through the exploitation of this area, particularly because the project is located on prime real estate in the heart of Bali’s tourism area where land is extremely expensive,” he said. One of the protesters, Ika, added that such a peaceful action was meant to appeal to the local politi-

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Matcha, a finely ground green tea powder first imbibed by Buddhist monks in tea ceremonies, is now being used throughout the U.S. in ice creams, lattes and even bourbon.

Traditional matcha tea gets whirled, dusted, infused in US

LOS ANGELES — More than a thousand years ago, Buddhist monks in Japan began a daily ritual of grinding green tea leaves into powder, mixing it into hot water with a bamboo whisk, then sharing the tea from a single cup. Today matcha in the U.S. is considerably less monastic. It’s being blended into lattes, dusted onto cheesecakes, mixed into chocolate, even infused in bourbon. The finely ground green tea is experiencing a U.S. renaissance, with specialty matcha tea bars popping up from Los Angeles to New York and industry giants like Teavana adding it to their product lineup. Chefs are mixing matcha with grains, using it in toppings for Bundt cakes, and mixing it into cocktails, adding a punch of opulent green color along with a cool, mellow taste to playful culinary combinations. Teavana president Annie YoungScrivner even uses matcha as a beauty mask. “It’s fantastic,” she said. “It tightens.” The uptick in U.S. demand for matcha is having a spillover effect in Japan, where production of tencha, the raw green leaves that are ground into the powder known as matcha, has doubled in Kyoto prefecture during the last 10 years, rising from 564 tons in 2003 to more than 1,163 tons in 2013. Once picked by hand, advances in technology have paved the way for mass production. Specialized machines pluck the top leaves from tea shrubs and remove the veins and stems before the remnants are ground with granite stone and sealed in tin cans. Industry leaders hope matcha one

day will become a staple in the American kitchen the same way soy sauce did after World War II. They also hope the tea’s long and rich culinary history doesn’t get dissolved in the process. “Ideally, people will learn how to prepare tea as well, not just drink it,” said Kazumi Nishiguchi, a director at the Chamber of Kyoto Prefecture Tea Public Interest Incorporated Association. “We need to export the culture, too. And it’s important that it be done right.” Matcha was first consumed during China’s Tsang dynasty and later was brought to Japan by priests and monks. After a bloody war with the Mongols, tea ceremonies in China came to a halt but continued to flourish across the East China Sea in Japan. The Japanese developed intricate tea ceremonies combining prayer and meditation and perfected the process for making matcha: Tea plants were covered with a shade cloth two to four weeks before harvest, when the leaves contain the most chlorophyll and nutrients, then plucked. Monks praised matcha for its calming effect. Today more is known about the science behind matcha. Growing tea leaves in the shade boosts their amino acids, and because the entire leaf is consumed matcha also contains about 10 times as many antioxidants as regularly brewed green tea. It also gives an energy kick, but with less

caffeine than coffee. Matcha likely first entered the U.S. market through Japanese grocery stores in cities like Los Angeles, which has one of the largest Japanese populations outside Japan. Some of the biggest matcha producers are reporting big U.S. sales growth. DoMatcha, sold at Whole Foods and U.S. specialty stores, has seen an annual spike in sales of 30 percent, while Ippodo has seen growth of 20 to 25 percent in recent years and opened its first brick-and-mortar store outside Japan in New York City in 2013. Chains like Starbucks now offer green tea lattes with matcha; Teavana sells a bamboo whisking set. Across the Pacific, Japan hasn’t been immune to the forces of cultural adaptation either. “Matcha sweets are everywhere,” said Kenichi Kano, Ippodo’s international director. “Matcha cake, matcha chocolate, matcha macaroons.” As lifestyles in Japan get busier, ready-to-go matcha beverages have replaced tea ceremonies and restaurants are experimenting with matcha powder and extract in ice cream, beer and alcohol. “Japan respects the traditional tea ceremony,” said Rona Tison, a senior vice president with Ito En, one of the world’s largest green tea distributors. “But they are becoming Westernized as well.” (ap)

Space station getting Italian espresso maker CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida — The next space station grocery run will carry caffeine to a whole new level: Aboard the SpaceX supply ship is an authentic espresso machine straight from Italy. SpaceX is scheduled to launch its unmanned rocket with the espresso maker — and 4,000 pounds (1,800 kilograms) of food, science research and other equipment — Monday afternoon. The experimental espresso machine is intended for International Space Station astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti of Italy. It was supposed to arrive in January, shortly after her arrival, so she could get some relief from the station’s instant coffee. But it ended up on the back burner after a station shipment from Virginia was lost in a launch explosion. The espresso maker is dubbed ISSpresso — ISS standing for International Space Station. Italian coffee giant Lavazza joined forces with the Turin-based engineering company Argotec and the Italian Space Agency to provide a specially designed machine for use off the planet. NASA certified its safety. NASA’s space station program deputy manager, Dan Hartman, said it’s all part of making astronauts feel at home as they spend months — and even up to a year — in orbit. Buleleng exports mangosteen to China SINGARAJA - Other than mangoes, Depaha village, Kubutambahan, Buleleng, also has a local fruit known in English as mangosteen, which has managed to penetrate the international market. This sweet fruit with a slightly sour flavour, is grown in many villages in North Bali but mangosteen farmers in Unggahan village, Seririt and Bongancina village, Busungbiu are exporting their fruit to China. Horticulture Production Division Head, I Gede Sebudi, with permission from the Head of the Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency, Nyoman Swatantra, said on Monday that among the many mangosteen producing villages in the area, so far, only Unggahan and Bongancina villages are exporting their product. “Based on data collected, mangosteen from these villages are exported, while mangosteen grown in other villages are only sold to the local markets of Bali and Java,” he said. Sebudi said that there is no data that confirms exactly why foreign fruit importers only buy fruit from these two villages. But according to farmers and collectors, the fruit from villages of Unggahan and Bongancina are of good quality with smooth skin and a lot of flesh. The stems of these fruit are also shorter which makes them able to stay fresh longer, once they have been picked. Mangosteen that are chosen for export are not resold as fruit to be eaten but are processed into cosmetic and medical products. “Only mangosteen of the very best grade are able to be exported because they will be used for cosmetics and drugs,” he said. There are also no exact figures for the number of Buleleng Mangosteen that could reach international markets because Buleleng itself has no mangosteen collectors, only growers. NEGARA - Jembrana’s Endek cloth weavers, who produce the distinctive makepung or “buffalo race style” cloth can now breathe easy because their cloth designs cannot be copied or stolen anymore. This product of creative work has received a copyright certificate from the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs. Until now, the typical designs of Jembrana have been plagiarized or “knowcked-off” by producers from outside of Jembrana, causing the value of such cloths to go down.

Regent of Jembrana, I Putu Artha did not deny such facts and added that local producers of the buffalo race style endek cloths no longer need to fear that their designs will be copied. “All this time Jembrana entrepreneurs who created the buffalo race style have had to worry about their work will be plagiarized by entrepreneurs from outside Jembrana and outside of Bali who have been copying their designs, now, with the copyright certificate, Jembrana weavers will be protected,” said Artha.

What is more, with the impending implementation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) there will be even tougher competition all around. A drug dealer modifies wrist watch to hide illicit good DENPASAR - A more intensive arrest is made by police against drug dealers committing a variety of ways to hide the evidence as committed by the suspect Suar, 26. The man that arrested on Jalan Teuku Umar Barat, Denpasar, Saturday (Apr. 4) has modified his wrist watch strap specifically to hide the illicit goods. “We are almost deceived by the suspect (Suar—Ed). However, we have directed our personnel to be more careful so as not to be deceived. We do not want to lose with such kinds of modes,” said the Chief of Denpasar Police Narcotic Unit, Gede Ganefo, Sunday (Apr. 12). Ganefo revealed that the suspect living on Jalan Serangan Kerobokan was arrested at approximately 8:45 p.m. Disclosure of the case is based on the results of investigation a few days earlier. Having been arrested at the scene, the officers are initially surprised because when searched they did not found any drugs. The search was then repeated and all goods used by the suspect were examined. “When the suspect was told to open his wrist watch we were surprised because the strap is not common. When checked, in fact a package of crystal meth was found in the fold of the watch strap,” said the former police chief of Kuta. After that, the suspect was taken to Denpasar Police station for further examination. Having been weighed, the evidence weighs 0.23 gram. In the meantime, police are still developing the case. Police found a package of crystal meth weighing 0.4 gram in the palm of his left hand, Monday (Apr. 6) approximately at 8:30 p.m. “As recognition of the suspect, the goods will be used and sold in Ubud. Apparently there is a dealer from outside Denpasar making transaction here (Denpasar—Ed),” he said. Two packages of crystal meth were also secured by the officers from the suspect AD, 35. The suspect living on Jalan Raya Sesetan South Denpasar was arrested on Jalan Gelogor Carik Denpasar, Monday (Apr. 6) approximately at 10:00 p.m. From the suspect were secured two packages of crystal meth weighing 4.78 grams. “The suspect confessed that the illicit goods will be circulated whereas the suspect has profession as an acupuncturist,” said Ganefo. Traditional art of Shadow Puppetry almost disappeared BANGLI - Leather shadow puppetry is one of the Balinese traditional arts that still survives amid the onslaught of globalization and the influences it brings. Public appreciation for the art of shadow puppets show is still quite high, especially with the emergence of innovative puppet creations that reflect changing times. However, before garnering the appreciation that it does today, shadow puppetry had some hard times. This traditional art form with its deep moral messages, nearly disappeared in the mid 1990’s. Dewa Gede Agung Sutresna Mesi, a puppeteer from Bangli, recently met with Bali Post, briefly explained about the development of the art of shadow puppets in Bali. He said that shadow puppet shows, often performed in the sapuh leger ritual were formerly regarded as a sacred performance with strict provisions that had to be adhered to but such provisions have become lax with time. Around the 1940’s, Dewa Mesi’s grandfather, developed a puppet show in which he used a microphone during the performance. “Previously, nobody used microphones, so puppeteers had to have a loud voice,” he said.

From there, other developments followed. In the 1970s, puppeteer Dewa Mesi made further innovations in order to produce a more modern style performance that would appeal to the demands of the public. “At that time, he tried to make innovations so that the show would be more amusing,” he explained. But in the mid of the 1990s, the public interest in watching puppet shows increasingly receded so puppet shows in Bali lacked an audience. “Around 1996 shadow puppets almost disappeared. There was minimal interest in puppets from the public and particularly from the younger generation,” he explained. According to Sutresna Mesi, one of the factors that caused the decline in public interest in the art of shadow puppet theatre is the development of entertainment media. The rapid development of media

at that time was recognized as having the capacity to erode public interest in the puppet show. Slowly puppeteers in Bali made artistic innovations to the puppet show so as to revive public interest in this form of theatre. One such innovation was carried out by his colleague, Nardayana known as the Cenk Blonk puppeteer. Cenk Blonk was able to package the show in a more attractive style by adding lighting and a sound system, but without eliminating the original style. “Today, people have started to become interested in watching shadow puppet shows again,” he said. Other than the general public interest in watching puppet performances, there is also increased interest by young people in pursuing puppetry themselves. This interest is evident by the number of young people formally studying the art of puppetry. “In my day, anyone who did choose the puppetry department for their studies, invariably dropped out, but toady the puppetry department is becoming fairly well established,” he said. Thai police suspect Muslim rebels behind southern killings

HAT YAI, Thailand — Police suspect Muslim separatists are behind six killings in Thailand’s far south that have come as the country celebrates its traditional New Year. Two rubber farmers were shot dead on their plantation in Yala province on Monday, and four people in two neighboring houses were killed Sunday night in Narathiwat province. More than 5,000 people have been killed in Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani provinces since an Islamic separatist insurgency erupted in 2004. Authorities are still investigating the attacks, but police Lt. Weerachai Parnnu said they believe they were carried out by Muslim insurgents because intelligence indicated there would be attacks on Buddhists during the New Year festival, known as Songkran. Thailand’s three southernmost provinces are the only ones with Muslim majorities in the predominantly Buddhist country. On Friday night, just ahead of the holiday, a powerful car bomb exploded at a shopping mall on the southern resort island of Samui, injuring 12 people. Samui

is outside the insurgents’ normal area of operations, and Thailand’s military government said evidence suggests that political foes of the junta might be behind the attack. However, the car bomb was concealed in a pickup truck stolen in Yala, and the bomb was of a type used in many attacks in the deep south. Police have also speculated that local, personal grudges might be behind the incident in Samui. In Monday’s attack in Yala’s Yaha district, a 54-year-old man and his 52-year-old wife were killed by gunfire from an unknown number of attackers while the couple were working on their farm, said police Col. Paphonwat Khattiyawaranant. Sunday’s attacks in Narathiwat’s Sukhirin district targeted two houses about 150 meters (yards) from each other, said Lt. Weerachai. BEIJING - Taiwan’s bid to become a founding member of China’s new regional development bank has been rejected, Beijing said Monday, dashing the island’s hopes of having a platform in the institution from the start. Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for the Beijing-based State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said in a statement that a Hong Kong report the island had failed to become a founding member of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) was correct. But he held out the possibility of Taiwan joining later if it meets a key naming condition. Beijing regards Taiwan as part of its territory and opposes international recognition for it, often curtailing its involvement in global agreements. The two split in 1949 at the end of the Chinese civil war. “We are willing to continue to listen to the opinions of various parties to appropriately handle the issue of Taiwan’s participation in the AIIB,” Ma said in the statement. “The AIIB... is open and inclusive and welcomes the Taiwan side to join under an appropriate name,” he added. Taiwan is not a member of the United Nations, World Bank or International Monetary Fund but it has joined some international organisations under different names. Taiwan’s Central News Agency cited a Cabinet report to parliament as expressing regret it had not been allowed in as a founding member. “It looks like the hope of Taiwan joining AIIB as a founding member has vanished,” Taiwan’s parliamentary speaker Wang Jin-pyng told reporters. “We still hope we could join as a member in the future and will keep striving for this.” “But then again, in what name we would join is important,” he added, describing “Chinese Taipei” -- the name under which Taiwan is referred to by the International Olympic Committee -- as “the bottom line”. Taiwan is known as the Separate Customs Territory of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu at the World Trade Organization. It is a member of the ADB under the name “Taipei, China”, while officially the government refers to itself as the Republic of China. More than 50 countries have applied to join the AIIB, a success for Beijing’s diplomacy after close US allies decided to participate even after Washington initially opposed them signing up. BEIJING — China’s trade contracted in March by an expectedly wide margin, adding to expectations Beijing will launch new stimulus to shore up weakening growth in the world’s second-largest economy. Exports fell 15 percent compared with a year earlier to $144.6 billion following a 20.5 percent contraction the previous month, customs data showed Monday. Imports declined 12.7 percent to $141.5 billion. The decline fueled fears economic growth in the first three months of this year, due to be reported this week, fell further after declining to 7.3 percent in the final quarter of 2015. The weakness “represents not only monthly volatility but also further weakness in foreign trade, adding uncertainties to economic recovery,” said Citigroup economist Minggao Shen in a report.

The economy has cooled steadily as communist leaders try to steer China to more sustainable growth based on domestic consumption and reduce reliance on trade and investment. Last year’s full-year growth of 7.4 percent was the lowest in two decades. The decline has deepened since mid-2014, feeding concern growth might falling too sharply and raising the risk of politically dangerous job losses. To spur growth, Beijing has cut interest rates twice since November. The top economic official, Premier Li Keqiang, said in March that Beijing might intervene to stimulate growth if

employment weakens too much. Also in March, the central bank governor, Zhou Xiaochuan, said economic growth had fallen “too sharply.” He said inflation has fallen so low the country should be alert to the possibility of deflation, or a damaging overall decline in prices. Total imports and exports in the first three months of the year fell 6.3 percent from a year earlier, making it unlikely China can meet the Communist Party’s official target of 6 percent growth for the year. from Tanjung Benoa, Badung District, because they used the hazardous materials in the form of “compressor”. The Fisheries Law forbids the using of compressor in catching lobster and fish. Although the fishermen just bring the compressor when at sea, without using hazardous materials, it is not allowed. The ship’s captain identified as Mulamin and the crew members Ruslan, Rubianto, Bidin, Japar and Taufik Hidayat were arrested at the Nusa Penida. With a combination of simple spices like grated grilled coconut, it can drive the taste and take back the imagination to ancient tradition where local farmers preferred to prepare their side dishes and vegetable obtained from their surroundings. Today, though it is not cultivated, it can be acquired at traditional markets or supermarkets. Ingredients: 2 handful of young kejompot leaf, Spices: 2 tbsp grated grilled coconut, 1 pc grilled small and large chili, 1 slice aromatic ginger (grilled), 2 pcs kaffir lime leaf, ½ tsp salt and 2 cloves garlic (grilled) Method: • Cleanse the young kejompot leaf and boil for a while or do not let it be until too tender as it turns cooked quickly. Take out and drain well. • Grind all spices. Mix well the ingredient namely kejompot leaf with spices evenly. Garnish with slices of red large chili and cabbage. It is now ready to serve.

Italy rescues migrants, finds 9 bodies near capsized boat ROME — Italy’s coast guard says rescuers have saved 144 migrants from a capsized boat north of Libya, and spotted nine bodies. Coast Guard Cmdr. Filippo Marini told Sky TG24 TV that a search is continuing Monday in case there are more bodies. While the exact number of migrants aboard the boat when it set out wasn’t immediately known, Marini said the vessel had the capacity to carry more people.

Nearby cargo ships have joined vessels from Italy’s coast guard, navy and border police in the search. Aircraft are also being used. By Monday morning, Navy and coast guard vessels had rescued some 2,800 migrants in separate operations in a 48-hour period in the sea south of Sicily. Smugglers often use rickety boats or abandon the migrants during the voyage. (ap)

KHARTOUM, Sudan — Sudan began voting Monday in an election expected to be won by President Omar al-Bashir, the world’s only sitting leader wanted on genocide charges. Voters slowly began arriving to polling places in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum. Opposition parties, citing a lack of freedom of speech and assembly in the African country, are boycotting the vote, which includes electing candidates for the country’s legislative council. Voter lists hung on walls at polling stations. Some police officers and soldiers lined up with civilians to vote. Ahmed Sulieman, a university professor, was one of a handful of voters at the polling place in St. Francis School in downtown Khartoum. He described voting as the only way for a “peaceful transition of power” in this country of 35 million people. “Many countries are suffering amid power struggles,” Sulieman said. “I am here for the sake of stability and safety.” Al-Bashir, dressed in white tra-

KABUL, Afghanistan — Taliban fighters swarmed over Afghan army posts in the country’s northeast, killing at least 18 soldiers and beheading some in a major attack to mark the start of the country’s summer fighting season, authorities said Monday. The assault marks a grim first summer battle for Afghan forces, now fighting largely alone after the U.S. and NATO ended their combat mission in the country at the start of this year. The attack in Badakhshan’s Jurm district happened Friday, though officials only offered details about it days later as they pledged to investigate the apparent rout. Some 250 Taliban fighters overran the posts, said Gul Mohammad Bidar, the province’s deputy governor. Ahmad Nawid Froutan, a spokesman for the provincial governor, said the attack killed 18

soldiers, with eight of their bodies beheaded. He said Afghan troops killed 19 Taliban fighters, eight of them foreigners, and that the insurgents fled after reinforcements arrived to the area. The Defense Ministry said earlier Monday that the attack caused 30 soldiers to be “killed, wounded or become missing.” The ministry said it was conducting an investigation into the attack, which it said came from unspecified “neglect” by an army officer there. It said the fighters looted military equipment and set fire to vehicles it couldn’t take. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack and said they killed 49 soldiers. INDONESIA National police chief’ selection to be on schedule

JAKARTA - The Commission III will conduct a fit-and-proper test on National Police (Polri) chief candidate Commissioner General Badrodin Haiti as per schedule, stated Vice Chairman of the House of Representatives Agus Hermanto. “According to the Chief of Police Act, the House of Representatives will only be given up to 20 working days, which ends on April 20, 2015,” Hermanto noted on Monday. He remarked that if the implementation of a fit-and-proper test runs smoothly, a new police chief will be installed. The plenary meeting of Commission III of the House of Representatives agreed to schedule a fit-andproper test for Polri chief candidate Commissioner General Haiti on April 15, 16, and 17, 2015. The implementation of a fit-andproper test aims to evaluate Haiti’s vision and mission. According to Hermanto, the Commission III will visit Haiti’s residence to clarify the data. Earlier, Minister/State Secretary Pratikno expressed hope that Commission III on security affairs of the House of Representatives (DPR) will conduct a fit-and-proper test on Polri chief candidate Commissioner General Haiti.

“We hope that the House will conduct a fit-and-proper test soon, so that we can appoint Badrodin Haiti as Polri chief,” the minister remarked. He noted that his side was focused on the election of Haiti as Polri chief after President Joko Widodo submitted his candidacy to the House. “As it has been pointed out on several occasions, the president lauds the House’s existing mechanism,” Pratikno added. Regarding the rumor that Commissioner General Budi Gunawan will be named as Polri deputy chief, Pratikno stressed that he did intend to be embroiled in that discourse as the session of the House was ongoing. The president had previously nominated Budi as the sole candidate for Polri chief. However, his candidacy was cancelled after the Corruption Eradication Commission named him a suspect. Pratikno remarked that his side hoped that Haiti would efficiently accomplish his tasks as Polri chief by abiding to the existing mechanisms,

respecting the efforts to reform the police, and fighting corruption in the force. “We believe Pak (Mr) Badrodin and the internal officials of Polri will choose the best personnel for the Polri leadership circle,” he added. Following a consultation meeting between the president and House leaders, the DPR is expected to conduct a fit-and-proper test on Haiti. “The House leaders and President Joko Widodo held a consultation meeting to discuss the appointment of the new police chief candidate and the 2015 revised state budget,” Chairman of the House of Representatives Setya Novanto stated. During the meeting, he noted that the president and House leaders reached a certain level of agreement. “The House of Representatives and president have agreed to hold a consultation meeting every three months to discuss the constitutional relationship between the executive and legislature,” he added. JAKARTA - Indonesia wants to hold regular military exercises with the United States near the sparsely populated Natuna archipelago, an area of the South China Sea near China’s claims, a navy spokesman said on Monday. Although Indonesia is not a claimant in the South China Sea, the military has accused China of including parts of Natuna within its so called “Nine-Dash Line,” the vague boundary used on Chinese maps to lay claim to about 90 percent of the sea. The United States, which raised concerns on Friday about China’s rapid reclamation of reefs in the area, held a joint military exercise over the weekend with Indonesia in Batam, about 300 miles (480 km) from Natuna. “It was the second joint exercise we have conducted with the United States in that area and we are plan-

ning another one next year. We want to make it routine in that area,” said Indonesia Navy spokesman Manahan Simorangkir. The military exercise included the use of surveillance and patrol aircraft, such as the P-3 Orion, which can detect surface vessels and submarines. The exercise could not be held in Natuna because of the lack of facilities to accommodate all of the aircraft, he said. Defence Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu told Reuters last week that in May he would visit Natuna, a scattering of 157 mostly uninhabited islands off the northwest coast of Borneo, to finalise plans on upgrading its small military base. “There has always been an airport in Natuna but it does not have a lot of armed forces, only a few marines,” the minister said. “We will add forces there - possibly air, navy and land forces.”

Indonesian officials said the joint military exercises with the United States and planned military build-up in Natuna were not in response to any specific threat. “It is important to remember Indonesia is not involved in any disputes in the South China Sea,” Simorangkir said. “We don’t want an incident in the South China Sea and are committed to the diplomatic approach we have always taken.” President Joko Widodo last month said that China’s main claims to the majority of the disputed sea had no legal basis in international law, but Jakarta wanted to remain an “honest broker” in one of Asia’s most thorny territorial disputes. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan also have overlapping claims to the South China Sea, through which $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year. (rtr)

BANDUNG - China is interested to develop a Zhou Enlai Garden in Bandung at the upcoming commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Asian-African Conference (AAC). The Chinese government proposed to develop the garden in remembrance of the former Chinese prime minister, Bandung Mayor Ridwan Kamil said. “The Chinese president wishes to set up a Zhou Enlai Garden as a symbol of friendship between Indonesia and China,” the mayor stated after meeting with Vice President Jusuf Kalla at Gedung Sate on Monday. With regard to the proposal from China, Kamil, or Emil as he is often called, gave his assurance that he would coordinate with the foreign affairs minister. “I will consult with the foreign affairs minister if this project can be realized, taking various aspects into consideration. At the meeting, Emil added, the vice president asked for more flowers to be planted around Bandung’s Husein Sastranegara Airport, ahead of the commemorative event marking the 60th anniversary of the AAC. “He has asked for more flowers (to be planted) around the airport to strengthen the city’s status as “Kota Kembang,” or the city of flowers,” he explained. In addition, Emil admitted that not much had changed at the airport in the last 50 years, and that to make the city more beautiful and memorable, more flowers should be planted so people do not remember only the old buildings.

“We hope it will be like a wedding party,” he remarked. The commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Bandung AAC is scheduled to be held in Jakarta and Bandung from April 19 to 24. Of the 18 states that have requested to hold bilateral meetings with the Indonesian president, the foreign affairs minister mentioned only 16---China, Myanmar, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Palestine, Egypt, Japan, Seychelles, Vietnam, Iran, Nepal, Jordan, Swaziland, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. Indonesia has invited 109 countries from the Asian and African regions to the AAC Summit and the 60th anniversary of the AAC to be held from April 19 to 24. Based on the schedule of the AAC’s 60th anniversary celebrations, which will be held in Jakarta and Bandung, West Java, a senior officials’ meeting will be held on April 19 in the AAC’s venue and a ministerial meeting and a summit will follow on April 20. On April 21 and 22, the AsianAfrican Business Summit will be held. President Joko Widodo will host a state banquet in honor of the heads of states attending the event. On April 24, the last day of the AAC, all heads of states participating in the events are expected to take part in a historical walk in Bandung. AUSTIN - MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez roared back to his dominant best with a commanding win from pole position in the Grand Prix of the Americas on Sunday after a start delayed by water on the track. Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso took second with Italian Valentino Rossi, winner of the Qatar seasonopener for Yamaha last month, third to keep the overall lead by a single point. Spanish team mate Jorge Lorenzo was fourth. Marquez, who has now won all three races held in Austin from pole as well as the last six MotoGP rounds in the United States, lost out to Dovizioso at the start but swept past the Italian on lap five. The 22-year-old Honda rider then pulled away steadily to finish 2.354 seconds ahead of Dovizioso, who appeared to run out of fuel on his slowing down lap after the chequered flag. Rossi now has 41 points to Dovizioso’s 40 with two times champion Marquez, who started the season with only a fifth place after having to climb back from last at the first corner, on 36. The third race of the season is in Argentina next weekend.

“We recovered some points...but we need to work really hard in the next races,” said Marquez. “I felt really good at the beginning, I tried to save some tyres, then I pushed some laps and managed the distance.” The scheduled start was delayed by 35 minutes as workers dried the track after a water spillage, due to overnight rain, from an overhead footbridge at turn three. There was immediate drama on the opening lap when Britain’s Scott Redding, who had qualified an impressive sixth, fell and took Spaniard Pol Espargaro with him. United ends recent derby pain with 4-2 win over City

MANCHESTER — Manchester United ended two years of hurt on derby day by dismantling Manchester City in a 4-2 win in the Premier League on Sunday, underlining the reversal in fortunes of the local rivals this season. City had won four straight Manchester derbies since April 2013 but the “noisy neighbors” — as former United manager Alex Ferguson once called them — were silenced in another sign of United’s resurgence under Louis van Gaal. United’s sixth straight league win came despite City, the soon-to-bedeposed champions, going ahead through Sergio Aguero’s eighthminute opener. Ashley Young and Marouane Fellaini scored to put United ahead at halftime, before more poor defending by City was punished by goals from Juan Mata and Chris Smalling in a seven-minute span midway through the second half. Aguero grabbed a late consolation for City but it couldn’t stop a sixth defeat in eight matches, a staggering decline that has left City manager Manuel Pellegrini fighting for his job. Indonesia refuses to buckle under FIFA threats

JAKARTA - An arm of the Indonesian government has accused FIFA of insulting the country’s sovereignty after soccer’s world governing body threatened to ban the Asians over a dispute that has halted the local league. The Indonesia Super League was suspended by the local football association (PSSI) following Saturday’s matches after a row about the eligibility of two clubs with the Indonesian Professional Sports Agency (BOPI), sanctioned by the Youth and Sports Ministry. FIFA threatened the country with a ban once again over BOPI’s meddling in affairs on Saturday and said only the PSSI was recognised to make decisions. BOPI fired back. “We think that what FIFA have done is an insult to Indonesia’s sovereignty,” it said in a statement carried by Kompas on Sunday. The report said that BOPI’s actions

to insist that Arema Indonesia and Persebaya Surabaya be barred was made because they failed to meet FIFA and Asian Football Confederation criteria. BOPI also accused FIFA of being out of touch with local customs. “Rightly FIFA should understand that besides FIFA regulation, there are also laws that are applied and must be complied by all national football related parties as part of the Indonesian big family,” the statement added. A former PSSI official said his old employers were at fault. “The league’s CEO is aware of who is behind Persebaya and Arema,” former deputy secretary-general Tondo Widodo told The Jakarta Post on Friday when asked why the PSSI hadn’t followed BOPI rulings. “It’s due to PSSI’s arrogance that only FIFA can intervene.
