Hulk Hogan’s side rests after slamming Gawker in sex tape lawsuit

ST. PETERSBURG - Attorneys for wrestling celebrity Hulk Hogan rested their $100 million privacy invasion case against the Gawker news outlet on Friday, wrapping up a lively week of testimony in a Florida lawsuit examining the posting of a sex tape in modern media. Next week, Gawker will call its witnesses, which could include website founder Nick Denton and the editor behind the post, as the civil trial continues in St. Petersburg, Florida, near the wrestler’s home. It also may show the tape to the jury. Gawker’s one-minute, 41-second edited excerpt shows Hogan having consensual sex with the wife of his then best friend, radio “shock jock” personality Bubba the Love Sponge. The 62-year-old former professional wrestler, whose legal name is Terry Bollea, told jurors he still is suffering from the humiliation of the sex tape’s posting in 2012. Hogan said he did not know the

encounter was being recorded when it took place five years earlier in Bubba’s home. Hogan’s side on Friday highlighted the video’s viral spread, with an expert witness tallying that it reached millions more than the 2.5 million who saw it on Gawker over six months. Testimony this week ranged from journalism ethics and website analytics to Hogan’s public statements about his sex life, including the his penis size. Hogan, one the wrestling world’s lead figures in the 1980s and ‘90s, emphasized a distinction he drew between his true personality and the bombastic persona he used professionally with “artistic liberty.”

The Hogan side presented examples this week designed to question Gawker’s approach to sexual content. In a taped video deposition, former editor A.J. Daulerio called celebrity sex tapes newsworthy unless involving a child. When pressed on an age, he drew the line at under four. Gawker later called the age reference a “flip” response. On Friday, attorneys for Hogan read some of Daulerio’s emails regarding a woman seeking the removal of a video showing her having sex in a public bathroom. He wrote: “Blah, blah, blah.” Hogan attorney David Houston called it “disgusting” that Gawker claimed speech protections under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. “This is a case of pandering to the very basest of human curiosity,” he told Reuters, expecting a favorable verdict to demonstrate

Indonesia begins efforts to tackle forest fires

Jakarta -Authorities in western Indonesia began efforts to fight forest fires, as the dry season begins to set in.

Last week, the Sumatran province declared a state of emergency over fires spreading rapidly because of strong winds. In just two months, more than 200 hectares of forests there have been razed, Channel

News Asia reported. More than 700 personnel from the military, police and forestry ministry have been deployed to put out the fires in Riau. For the first time, coordinated joint patrols are also being deployed, not only to detect fires but also to educate the population on fire prevention. On Monday, the Riau provincial

government declared its highest level of disaster readiness since fires were detected in at least three districts two months ago. The environment and forestry ministry said 10 people have so far been questioned for allegedly starting the fires. Riau was one of the provinces severely affected by forest fires last year, made worse by the prolonged

dry season caused by the El Nino weather pattern. It was considered to be one of the worst environmental disasters in recent years, costing the Indonesian government an estimated $16 billion. The haze from the fires choked its neighbours Singapore and Malaysia - and several parts of Thailand -- causing schools, offices and

Thousands gather to voice their opposition to reclamation

GIANYAR— Starting the Caka New Year 1938 (Balinese New Year), on Thursday (March 10) thousands of villagers from Lebih Customary Village rallied together to protest against the Benoa Bay reclamation plan, by voicing their desire to have Presidential Regulation N0.51/2014 -that opened the way for reclamation, repealed. Lebih Village’s official declaration of their opposition to the reclamation of Benoa Bay began with a group prayer at the village’s Dalem Temple at around 14:30. After the group prayer session, thousands of protesters -mostly young people, headed to Lebih Beten Kelod’s hamlet hall to gather their signs and other props that

were created to voice their opposition to the reclamation project. Accompanied by gamelan music, the people then walked southward crossing Jalan Bypass I.B Mantra to Lebih Beach where they stood on the breakwater holding their banners and chanting slogans of protest against the Benao Bay reclamation plan.

Chief of Lebih customary village, I Wayan Wisma, joined the protest and in his speech to the crowd, spoke of the many hectares of land owned by residents of Lebih Village, that have already been swept away by abrasion. This abrasion he pointed out became severe after the reclamation that was undertaken to create Sarangan Island. “Based on the subak chief’s records, in 1960, Lebih Customary Village spread over some 86 hectares. After the reclamation of Serangan Island in 1994, massive abrasion started occurring and today there only remains 16 hectares of our village” he said.

Denpasar and Badung are already overcrowded with tourist accommodations. “Bali has eight districts and one municipality. But tourism seems to only be developed in Badung and Denpasar. To my knowledge, the districts of Bangli, Karangasem, Buleleng and Jembrana remain untouched by tourism development and are instead spoon fed special financial assistance that does little to actually help them” he said. Coordinator ForBALI, Wayan ‘Gendo’ Suardana, who participated in the protest said that there was no

option for the government apart from stopping the Benoa Bay reclamation plan and that he hopes President Jokowi will immediately revoke Presidential Regulation No. 51/2014. “As of today there are 26 customary villages in Bali that have officially expressed their opposition or rejection of the plan: 13 villages in the district of Badung , 8 in Denpasar, 2 in Gianyar (Lebih and Ketewel) and 3villages in Karangasem” he explained. Gendo went on to say that the government needs to hear this expression of opposition to the reclamation plan and understand that it is a warning that such government policies run contrary to the will of the people. Moreover, Lebih customary village residents and others in Bali have been traumatized by the abrasion caused by the reclamation of Serangan Island in 1994. “Today, they see for themselves how abrasion continues to eat away at coastal areas. Lebih customary village does not want to become like a donkey. Therefore, this way of seeing things needs to be appreciated as the voice of the people - a pure voice that cannot be deviated or ignored” he emphasized. (kmb35)

Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. Field Museum’s Wari Ale the latest homage to ancient brews

SIOUX FALLS — Fourteen years ago, University of South Dakota anthropology professor Matthew Sayre unearthed pepper tree seed from the southern tip of Peru, unaware he’d stumbled upon a spent ingredient from a small 1,000year-old brewery. That discovery evolved into a team from Chicago’s Field Museum team excavating a larger 500-gallon batch operation at Cerro Baul and the issuance of an ale inspired by the ingredients and brewing practices of the ancient Wari people. In the recent craft-beer booms, brewers have turned to ancient civilizations’ obscure, millenniaold recipes using corn, rice, peppers and berries to set themselves apart from their colleagues’ beers as well as the vast majority of modern beer, which is brewed primarily with barley, hops and yeast. “They started spreading out and trying other things, and it turned out that ancient people were doing the same thing,” said Patrick McGovern, an ancient

beverage expert at the University of Pennsylvania Museum in Philadelphia. “It takes us back to our roots.” Wari Ale, the latest offering that taps ancient cultures for inspiration, carries the sourness of a corn mash with a late-breaking, delicate hint of sweetness from the pepper, said Patrick Ryan Williams, the museum’s associate curator and head of anthropology. “It’s very refreshing, clear, summer ale type,” Williams said of the purple beer, which was made by Chicago’s Off Color Brewing. “Maybe like a shandy.” Delaware-based Dogfish Head Craft Brewery was among the first to tap into ancient beers market in 1999 as part of col-

laboration with McGovern. The recipe for the beer-wine-mead hybrid brew Midas Touch — honey, barley malt, white muscat grapes and saffron — came from molecular evidence found in a Turkish tomb believed to have belonged to King Midas. Inspirations for later Dogfish Head ancients, which McGovern will be chronicling in his upcoming book “Liquid Time Capsules,” include a 3,500-year-old Danish drinking vessel, 3,400-year-old pottery fragments found in Honduras and a 9,000-year-old tomb from Neolithic China. A 2009 batch of the traditional Peruvian chicha replicated the ancient act of milling and moistening the corn in Dogfish brewers’ mouths before adding it into the boil. Attendees of the Great American Beer Festival couldn’t wait to try it, McGovern said. “The line of people across the Denver Convention Center was unbelievable,” he said.

To map out a process for a modern take on chicha, Williams and a team of researchers brewed experimental batches in Peru using locally grown corn and pepper berries. “We used reproduction ceramic vessels of the boiling jars and we did it over an open fire using natural woods and fuel,” Williams said. “We really wanted to understand how the brew was created.” The batches gave the scientists a pretty good idea of how the brew should taste, and then the museum took its information to Off Color Brewing. To be called a beer in the U.S., breweries must use barley and hops, so those ingredients were incorporated into the recipe. “So it’s not an exact recreation,” Williams said. “It’s a chicha de molle-inspired ale. Off Color co-founder David Bleitner brewed some small batches until settling on a method that would work for a large-scale replication, overcoming logistical challenges such as finding an importer to source the purple corn from Peru. “We’ve never done anything like this before,” Bleitner said. “This was probably the most work I’ve ever put into concepting and making a beer.” (ap)

Preserving tradition of lukat geni To purify macrocosm and microcosm

SEMARAPURA - Residents of Satria Kawan Palace at Paksebali village, Dawan implemented lukat geni tradition at catus pata (central intersection) of Paksebali village on new moon of the ninth month in Balinese calendar, Tuesday (Mar. 8). The tradition having been implemented through generations poses the purification of macrocosm and microcosm. The lukat geni followed by dozens of youth is carried out every night of the Pengerupukan to welcome the Caka New Year. Lukat Geni is interpreted as spiritual purification and the balance the universe by means of fire. The fire used is derived from a bundle of burned dried palm leaves. Lukat geni tradition is started with a self-purification at sacred spring and performing joint worship at family temple. Accompanied by baleganjur gamelan music and 33 torches, the participants of lukat geni headed for central intersection to start the procession. Here, dozens of youths taking part in the tradition of lukat geni hit their respective opponents in turns by means of fire set in palm leaves. No revenge is seen among the participants. According to senior figure of Satria Kawan Palace, A.A. Gde Agung Rimawan, the lukat geni is a tradition having existed at Satria Kawan Palace since long time ago. This tradition is held every year to welcome the Caka New Year. It poses a form of purification of macrocosm and microcosm. “Hopefully, with this lukat geni we can be bestowed with safety, both for ourselves and the surrounding environment,” said Rimawan. He explained the lukat geni tradition uses fire of 36 pieces of dried palm leaves tied together or summed into nine (9) located in the nine points of the compass or Dewata Nawa Sanga. In addition, the use of 33 torches represents the strength of 33 gods abiding in five places, namely the Eastern or White (5), South or Red (9), West or Yellow (7), North or Black (4) and Central or multicolor (8). “These signify the invocation of protection or safety for ritual processions in progress,” he explained. A participant of the lukat geni procession, A.A. Gde Agung Aris Pratama, stated that he participated in the lukat geni to preserve the tradition and cultural heritage from their ancestors. “Through this lukat geni tradition, we muffled the anger inside,” said a teenager that regularly participates in this annual tradition. Another participant, A.A. Gde Bagus Alit Putra, claimed to be proud to help preserve this tradition. It is the first time for him to participate in the tradition and claimed not to feel hot when being hit by his opponent using a fire of palm leaves. “There is no feeling of heat. It is meant to preserve the traditions and cultural heritages,” he said. (dwa)

SEOUL - North Korea on Sunday denied that it conducted cyber attacks against officials from rival South Korea, calling the South’s accusation that it did so a “fabrication”. South Korea’s spy agency told lawmakers on Friday that North Korea had recently stepped up cyber attack efforts against the South and succeeded in hacking the mobile phones of 40 national security officials, according to members of parliament who received a closeddoor briefing. “The South is claiming the North’s cyber attack and using it for its own political purpose,” an opinion piece in the Rodong Sinmun, the official daily newspaper of the North’s ruling party, said on Sunday. It accused the South of making the cyber attack claim in order to justify a controversial new “antiterrorism” law. “There is nothing to expect but the sound of eating corpses from

Then there are the older children. “Often when you sleep, the others come and burn your feet with (flaming) plastic bags,” he said. “The oldest will see you and take your money. If you complain, they beat you severely.” Kevin has the gaunt frame of a boy unused to nutritious meals since he was turned out by his family. He works odd jobs, begs and picks through trash to survive. He is one of 25,000 street children in Democratic Republic of Congo’s capital, a number that has nearly doubled in a decade, according to 2014 figures from the U.N. children’s agency, with thousands more in the country’s other cities. Congo is Africa’s top producer of copper and a mining boom has fuelled annual economic growth of 8 percent for five years, one of the highest rates in the world, according to the International Monetary Fund. But like many commodity-dependent African countries such as Angola and Nigeria, it has struggled to translate export-driven growth into broader social gains. It is still suffering the after-effects of a civil war in the east that ended in 2003 but left disease, displacement and inter-community violence in its wake. Kinshasa to the west is groaning under one of the world’s fastestgrowing urban populations. Outside the well-heeled city centre, there is little sign of prosperity, with most of its 11 million people crammed into rundown neighbourhoods where rubbish is piled in alleyways. None are more vulnerable than the street children, who are known as “shegues”. Denis Mabwa, who works for REEJER, a coalition of groups assisting street children, said charities like his find homes for about 3,000 children each year, while around 6,000 new children move in the opposite direction. “There has been a reconstruction of large infrastructure. Delta will offer nonstop winter flights from London to Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — Delta Air Lines will offer nonstop flights from London to Salt Lake City during the next ski season. KSL-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1LgQK5u ) the only North American ski destinations previously served by direct flights from the United Kingdom were British Columbia and Denver. To get to Salt Lake City, British visitors would have to connect through a hub like Chicago or Dallas. Delta held its first nonstop flight from London’s Heathrow Airport and Salt Lake International Airport in August. The summer trial went so well that Delta says it will offer the route three times a week in the winter. Paul Marshall with Ski Utah says he is “beyond excited” about the new flights. Stock market extends rally to a 4th week as energy recovers

NEW YORK — A jump in crude oil and a rise in European markets set off a rally in U.S. stocks to cap a four-week winning streak for major indexes. Investors bought across industries from the start of trading on Friday. Drillers, refiners and other energy companies rose sharply as the price for U.S. crude hit a high for the year. Devon Energy jumped 11 percent and Southwestern Energy gained 10 percent. Just a month ago, investors were dumping shares amid talk of a possible U.S. recession. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell to almost a two-year low. But confidence has returned as data has suggested the U.S. economy is strengthening. “While things aren’t great, they’re not the disaster we thought,” said Bill Strazzullo, chief market strategist at Bell Curve Trading. “We’ve rallied after a horrendous start to the year.” The S&P 500 is up now nearly 11 percent from Feb. 11. On Friday, the S&P 500 gained 32.62 points, or 1.6 percent, to 2,022.19. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 218.18 points,

or 1.3 percent, to 17,213.31. The Nasdaq composite climbed 86.31 points, or 1.9 percent, to 4,748.47. U.S. crude gained after the International Energy Agency said signs that the market has “bottomed out” have emerged. Energy companies have been shutting down rigs and laying off thousands of workers as oil prices plunged to around $30 per barrel, from well over $100 per barrel just two years ago. U.S. crude has risen 47 percent from a 13-year low of $26.21 a month ago. Bank stocks also rose sharply. That sector had been beaten down in recent weeks as investors worried about loans to highly leveraged energy companies going bad. The rally has got some investors worried, though. DAYTON - Secret Service officers rushed on stage to protect U.S. Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump during a disturbance at a rally on Saturday, a day after rowdy protests shut down his event in Chicago. Trump briefly ducked at the podium and four Secret Service members scrambled to surround him after a man charged the stage at Dayton International Airport in Ohio. Officers then grabbed the man, dressed in a black T-shirt and jeans, before he was able to reach the stage and hauled him away. “I was ready. I don’t know if I would have done well but I would have been out there fighting, folks,” Trump told a rally later in the day. He said the man “was looking to do harm.” The incident further increased tension after Trump’s Chicago rally was scrapped amid chaotic scenes on Friday. Trump’s Republican rivals hurled scorn at the New York billionaire, saying he helped create the nervous atmosphere that is now

Greece steps up efforts to move migrants to sheltered camps

IDOMENI - Greece increased efforts on Saturday to move thousands of migrants near the border with Macedonia to sheltered camps, as the spread of infection became a concern with one person in a sprawling tent city diagnosed with Hepatitis A. Stranded in filthy conditions at a muddy tent city near the northern border town of Idomeni, at least 12,000 people, among them thousands of children, were waiting to cross the frontier although Macedonia and other nations along the so-called Western Balkan route have closed their borders. Scuffles broke out at the camp in recent days as destitute people scrambled for food and firewood, while many have been sleeping in the open, often in the rain amid low temperatures. Greek authorities handed out leaflets in Idomeni on Saturday informing people that the main route to northern Europe was shut. The pamphlets urged them to move to buildings and hospitality centres across Greece that have been set aside for the purpose, according to a government official from the country’s refugee crisis management coordination body. “Our aim is not only to relieve Idomeni from the people, our aim is that no Idomeni (camp) even exists anymore. There are structures, why should people stay in the mud?” he said. Leaflets would also be distributed in ports and on islands to discourage people from going up to Idomeni, the government of-

ficial said. “Greece will offer you accommodation, food and healthcare,” read the leaflets which were written in Arabic, Farsi and Pashtun. Deputy Defence Minister Dimitris Vitsas, in charge of coordinating Greek efforts to tackle the refugee crisis, said 400 people were moved from Idomeni to camps on Friday and the numbers would increase in the coming days. “Many of them are waiting for a decision by the (EU) summit on March 17. A nine-year old Syrian girl was diagnosed with Hepatitis A on Friday, according to Greece’s disease control agency. According to the World Health Organisation, Hepatitis A is a virus which is transmitted through ingestion of contaminated food and water, or through direct contact with an infectious person. It is normally associated with lack of safe water or poor sanitation. Freakish injury will not slow Eaton’s world title bid

LOS ANGELES - Ashton Eaton’s bid for a third consecutive world indoor heptathlon title will not be affected by a freakish accident that left the American needing six stitches in his head, his coach told Reuters on Saturday. Eaton was hit on the head by a pole vault crossbar while waiting to start his long jump at Friday’s U.S. championships in Portland. Just about all the (quickly growing) accommodation at Balian beach is on the west side of the river and that’s where you’ll most likely spend most of your time, but if you’re surfed out (or don’t surf at all) wade across the river to the east side. MILAN — Inter Milan beat Bologna 2-1 to move provisionally a point above Fiorentina into fourth place in Serie A on Saturday and maintain its bid for the final Champions League spot. Bologna was the only team in Serie A not to have conceded a goal from a corner this season but it did so twice in four minutes. Danilo D’Ambrosio headed a corner goalward and Ivan Perisic nodded the ball in from almost on the goal-line to give Inter the lead in the 72nd minute. D’Ambrosio volleyed in the second goal, and substitute Franco Brienza netted a consolation in the final minute. Adem Ljajic also hit the post for Inter in the first half. Fiorentina plays Hellas Verona on Sunday, while third-place Roma — which is two points above Inter — visits Udinese. Inter visits Roma in a crucial match next weekend. Inter will be without captain Mauro Icardi, who limped off in the ninth minute after injuring his knee when sliding in to try and intercept Eder’s angled drive. Fellow forward Rodrigo Palacio will also miss that match through suspension after receiving a fifth yellow card for time-wasting.

“(The attack) worries me now,” Inter coach Roberto Mancini said. “It was important to win today, but there are still a lot of points, anything can happen from now until the end. “We knew it would be a difficult match, because Bologna is in good form ... The former Trinidad and Tobago striker said changes were needed at United, with the 20-times English champions sixth in the Premier League, out of the Champions League and suffering a 2-0 loss to arch-rivals Liverpool in the Europa League this week. “At the end of the day, it’s all about results,” Yorke was quoted as saying by Singaporean daily The New Paper on Saturday after a promotional event in the Southeast Asian citystate. “In the two years that he’s (Van Gaal) been there, he’s spent tons of money, brought in tons of players, and simply hasn’t got the results that he and everyone else had hoped to. “You see a lot of young managers, Zinedine Zidane’s been given the opportunity at Real Madrid, you got Luis Enrique at Barcelona, Pep Guardiola who’s coming to Manchester City, Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino, they’re all ex-players. “And I feel that the game is going down that road, and maybe this is the right time to give Giggsy the job.” Yorke won three Premier League titles and the 1999 Champions League with United under former manager Alex Ferguson after joining from Aston Villa. The Spanish soccer giant expressed its “total support” for the 14-time Grand Slam winner in a statement Saturday which called the accusations by former French Minister for Health and Sport Roselyne Bachelot “unjustifiable and intolerable.” Bachelot claimed on French television on Thursday that the Spaniard’s seven-month injury hiatus in 2012 was “probably due to a positive doping test.” Nadal is a prominent fan of Madrid and a “member of honor” of the club. Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane also backed Nadal. “I feel bad for what is being said,” the former France great said. “Everyone who likes sports likes Nadal, whether you are French, American, he is spectacular.” The Spanish Olympic Committee, national team manager Vicente del Bosque and Barcelona coach Luis Enrique have also supported Nadal, who denies any wrongdoing. Diego Costa told Chelsea he didn’t bite an Everton opponent in a confrontation that led to the fiery striker being sent off on Saturday as his team was knocked out of the FA Cup. Chelsea had just been humiliated by former striker Romelu Lukaku scoring twice in a five-minute span, including a breathtaking solo goal, when Costa was sent off in the 84th minute of Everton’s 2-0 win in the FA Cup quarterfinals. Reacting to a challenge from Gareth Barry, Costa thrust his head at the Everton midfielder before appearing to sink his teeth toward Barry’s neck in a biting motion. Having already been shown a yellow card for a 10th-minute foul on Barry, Costa was dismissed for the first time in two seasons at Chelsea after being booked again. There was no immediate reaction from Barry to suggest he had been bitten. More than four hours after the incident, Chelsea insisted there was no bite. “Diego spoke to club officials after the game and expressed regret over his reaction to the challenge from Gareth Barry that led to his red card,” Chelsea said late Saturday on Twitter. “But Diego was also very clear that he did not bite him at any point during that altercation.” Everton also ended with 10 men after Barry himself was shown a second yellow card three minutes later for catching Cesc Fabregas. “Diego Costa had a fighting spirit and I would like to praise the referee (Michael Oliver),” Everton manager Roberto Martinez said. “The sending off of Costa was right. “The sending off of Gareth Barry was

The late dismissals at Goodison Park overshadowed Lukaku’s superb goals which left Chelsea to rue offloading the Belgium striker in 2014 for 28 million pounds (then $47 million), having spent most of his career on loan away from Stamford Bridge. Diego Costa told Chelsea he didn’t bite an Everton opponent in a confrontation that led to the fiery striker being sent off on Saturday as his team was knocked out of the FA Cup. Chelsea had just been humiliated by former striker Romelu Lukaku scoring twice in a five-minute span, including a breathtaking solo goal, when Costa was sent off in the 84th minute of Everton’s 2-0 win in the FA Cup quarterfinals. Reacting to a challenge from Gareth Barry, Costa thrust his head at the Everton midfielder before appearing to sink his teeth toward Barry’s neck in a biting motion. Having already been shown a yellow card for a 10th-minute foul on Barry, Costa was dismissed for the first time in two seasons at Chelsea after being booked again. There was no immediate reaction from Barry to suggest he had been bitten. More than four hours after the incident, Chelsea insisted there was no bite. “Diego spoke to club officials after the game and expressed regret over his reaction to the challenge from Gareth Barry that led to his red card,” Chelsea said late Saturday on Twitter. “But Diego was also very clear that he did not bite him at any point during that altercation.” Everton also ended with 10 men after Barry himself was shown a second yellow card three minutes later for catching Cesc Fabregas. “Diego Costa had a fighting spirit and I would like to praise the referee (Michael Oliver),” Everton manager Roberto Martinez said. “The sending off of Costa was right. “The sending off of Gareth Barry was

right and the referee never allowed those emotions to stop the fluency. Whatever happens with Diego Costa I am sure the two players shook it off.” The FA Cup exit followed Chelsea being eliminated from the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday. Any hopes of defending the Premier League trophy were extinguished long ago, with Chelsea currently 10th with nine games remaining and highly likely to miss out on European football next season. Manchester City doesn’t look like it will be succeeding Chelsea as Premier League champions after being held 0-0 at relegation-threatened Norwich on Saturday to stay fourth, nine points behind surprise leader Leicester. The late dismissals at Goodison Park overshadowed Lukaku’s superb goals which left Chelsea to rue offloading the Belgium striker in 2014 for 28 million pounds (then $47 million), having spent most of his career on loan away from Stamford Bridge. Lukaku’s first goal came in the 77th minute after Ross Barkley slipped the ball through to him on the left wing. Lukaku slalomed past two players before cutting inside past defenders Cesar Azpilicueta and Branislav Ivanovic and striking low past compatriot Thibaut Courtois. The Belgium goalkeeper was beaten again in the 82nd when Lukaku put the ball through his legs for his 25th goal of the season — a tally greater than Chelsea’s strikers combined. So, unlike in 2009, Guus Hiddink will not be ending this interim spell as Chelsea

manager by lifting the FA Cup. And Jose Mourinho’s permanent successor will have to rebuild the squad by attracting players to a team likely out of Europe. At the same time, Chelsea is still dealing with the legal fallout from Mourinho’s rift with its former team doctor on the opening day of the season as Eva Carneiro’s constructive dismissal case heads to a public tribunal hearing. Relegation was the immediate threat to Chelsea when Hiddink replaced Mourinho in December but the champions’ Premier League status is not under threat. “My first task was to get us, as soon as possible, out of this relegation zone which we surprisingly did well within a few weeks from the 16th place to 10th,” Hiddink said. “But then it is difficult, as I said before, to achieve the Champions League places and maintain two roads to have success which is the FA Cup and which was the Champions League. They are gone now and that’s a pity.” Bournemouth looks like staying for a second season in the top flight after beating Swansea 3-2 to move 13 points clear of the relegation zone with eight games to play. Freakish injury will not slow Eaton’s world title bid

LOS ANGELES - Ashton Eaton’s bid for a third consecutive world indoor heptathlon title will not be affected by a freakish accident that left the American needing six stitches in his head, his coach told Reuters on Saturday. Eaton was hit on the head by a pole vault crossbar while waiting to start his long jump at Friday’s U.S. championships in Portland. Six stitches were needed to close the wound, the Olympic and world decathlon champion said on Twitter. “All good,” Harry Marra, Eaton’s long-time trainer, said in a text message. After a scheduled day off on Saturday, Eaton would be “back at it tomorrow (Sunday),” Marra said of preparations for next week’s IAAF world indoor championships in Portland, Oregon. Eaton, the heptathlon and decathlon world record holder, said he hoped to get the chance for some revenge on the offending crossbar. “I hope they use the same crossbar for (the world championships),” Eaton added. “Going to pay back with a PV PR (pole vault personal record). “I’m still waiting for pictures from when I had blood all over my hands and face.” The world championships start on Thursday, with the heptathlon scheduled for Friday and Saturday. DAYTON - Secret Service officers rushed on stage to protect U.S. Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump during a disturbance at a rally on Saturday, a day after rowdy protests shut down his event in Chicago. Trump briefly ducked at the podium and four Secret Service members scrambled to surround him after a man charged the stage at Dayton International Airport in Ohio. Officers then grabbed the man, dressed in a black T-shirt and jeans, before he was able to reach the stage and hauled him away. “I was ready. I don’t know if I would have done well but I would have been out there fighting, folks,” Trump told a rally later in the day. He said the man “was looking to do harm.” The incident further increased tension after Trump’s Chicago rally was scrapped amid chaotic scenes on Friday. Trump’s Republican rivals hurled scorn at the New York billionaire, saying he helped create the nervous atmosphere that is now

Greece steps up efforts to move migrants to sheltered camps

IDOMENI - Greece increased efforts on Saturday to move thousands of migrants near the border with Macedonia to sheltered camps, as the spread of infection became a concern with one person in a sprawling tent city diagnosed with Hepatitis A. Stranded in filthy conditions at a muddy tent city near the northern border town of Idomeni, at least 12,000 people, among them thousands of children, were waiting to cross the frontier although Macedonia and other nations along the so-called Western Balkan route have closed their borders. Scuffles broke out at the camp in recent days as destitute people scrambled for food and firewood, while many have been sleeping in the open, often in the rain amid low temperatures. Greek authorities handed out leaflets in Idomeni on Saturday informing people that the main route to northern Europe was shut. The pamphlets urged them to move to buildings and hospitality centres across Greece that have been set aside for the purpose, according to a government official from the country’s refugee crisis management coordination body. “Our aim is not only to relieve Idomeni from the people, our aim is that no Idomeni (camp) even exists anymore. There are structures, why should people stay in the mud?” he said. Leaflets would also be distributed in ports and on islands to discourage people from going up to Idomeni, the government of-

ficial said. “Greece will offer you accommodation, food and healthcare,” read the leaflets which were written in Arabic, Farsi and Pashtun. Deputy Defence Minister Dimitris Vitsas, in charge of coordinating Greek efforts to tackle the refugee crisis, said 400 people were moved from Idomeni to camps on Friday and the numbers would increase in the coming days. “Many of them are waiting for a decision by the (EU) summit on March 17. We are saying that regardless of this decision, there are three camps very close (to shelter them),” he told Greek Mega television. EU leaders and Turkey are due to meet again on Thursday and Friday to seal a deal to try to stem illegal migrant flows from Turkey to Europe through Greece. The squalid, overcrowded conditions of the camp in Idomeni have given rise to infections. A nine-year old Syrian girl was diagnosed with Hepatitis A on Friday, according to Greece’s disease control agency. According to the World Health Organisation, Hepatitis A is a virus which is transmitted through ingestion of contaminated food and water, or through direct contact with an infectious person. It is normally associated with lack of safe water or poor sanitation. The girl was being treated in a stable condition, the agency said, adding that it had already taken action to prevent the disease spreading among migrants in Idomeni. (rtr)

Delta will offer nonstop winter flights from London to Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — Delta Air Lines will offer nonstop flights from London to Salt Lake City during the next ski season. KSL-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1LgQK5u ) the only North American ski destinations previously served by direct flights from the United Kingdom were British Columbia and Denver. To get to Salt Lake City, British visitors would have to connect through a hub like Chicago or Dallas. Delta held its first nonstop flight from London’s Heathrow Airport and Salt Lake International Airport in August. The summer trial went so well that Delta says it will offer the route three times a week in the winter. Paul Marshall with Ski Utah says he is “beyond excited” about the new flights. Stock market extends rally to a 4th week as energy recovers

NEW YORK — A jump in crude oil and a rise in European markets set off a rally in U.S. stocks to cap a four-week winning streak for major indexes. Investors bought across industries from the start of trading on Friday. Drillers, refiners and other energy companies rose sharply as the price for U.S. crude hit a high for the year. Devon Energy jumped 11 percent and Southwestern Energy gained 10 percent. Just a month ago, investors were dumping shares amid talk of a possible U.S. recession. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell to almost a two-year low. But confidence has returned as data has suggested the U.S. economy is strengthening. “While things aren’t great, they’re not the disaster we thought,” said Bill Strazzullo, chief market strategist at Bell Curve Trading. “We’ve rallied after a horrendous start to the year.” The S&P 500 is up now nearly 11 percent from Feb. 11. On Friday, the S&P 500 gained 32.62 points, or 1.6 percent, to 2,022.19. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 218.18 points,

or 1.3 percent, to 17,213.31. The Nasdaq composite climbed 86.31 points, or 1.9 percent, to 4,748.47. U.S. crude gained after the International Energy Agency said signs that the market has “bottomed out” have emerged. Energy companies have been shutting down rigs and laying off thousands of workers as oil prices plunged to around $30 per barrel, from well over $100 per barrel just two years ago. U.S. crude has risen 47 percent from a 13-year low of $26.21 a month ago. Bank stocks also rose sharply. That sector had been beaten down in recent weeks as investors worried about loans to highly leveraged energy companies going bad. The rally has got some investors worried, though. Chief Equity Strategist Phil Orlando of Federated Investors said the “terrific four-week run” makes him a “little nervous.” Among his concerns are a steeper China

North Korea denies cyber attacks on South Korea officials

SEOUL - North Korea on Sunday denied that it conducted cyber attacks against officials from rival South Korea, calling the South’s accusation that it did so a “fabrication”. South Korea’s spy agency told lawmakers on Friday that North Korea had recently stepped up cyber attack efforts against the South and succeeded in hacking the mobile phones of 40 national security officials, according to members of parliament who received a closeddoor briefing. “The South is claiming the North’s cyber attack and using it for its own political purpose,” an opinion piece in the Rodong Sinmun, the official daily newspaper of the North’s ruling party, said on Sunday. It accused the South of making the cyber attack claim in order to justify a controversial new “antiterrorism” law. “There is nothing to expect but the sound of eating corpses from

He sleeps on a piece of cardboard in an unlit parking lot in a poor neighbourhood of Kinshasa, behind trucks he hopes can shield him from view. Some nights he’s unlucky. Recently police came looking for a stolen handbag and beat him up when they didn’t find it, said the boy, who’s now 14. Then there are the older children. “Often when you sleep, the others come and burn your feet with (flaming) plastic bags,” he said. “The oldest will see you and take your money. If you complain, they beat you severely.” Kevin has the gaunt frame of a boy unused to nutritious meals since he was turned out by his family. He works odd jobs, begs and picks through trash to survive. He is one of 25,000 street children in Democratic Republic of Congo’s capital, a number that has nearly doubled in a decade, according to 2014 figures from the U.N. children’s agency, with thousands more in the country’s other cities. Congo is Africa’s top producer of copper and a mining boom has fuelled annual economic growth of 8 percent for five years, one of the highest rates in the world, according to the International Monetary Fund. But like many commodity-dependent African countries such as Angola and Nigeria, it has struggled to translate export-driven growth into broader social gains. It is still suffering the after-effects of a civil war in the east that ended in 2003 but left disease, displacement and inter-community violence in its wake. Kinshasa to the west is groaning under one of the world’s fastestgrowing urban populations. Field Museum’s Wari Ale the latest homage to ancient brews

SIOUX FALLS — Fourteen years ago, University of South Dakota anthropology professor Matthew Sayre unearthed pepper tree seed from the southern tip of Peru, unaware he’d stumbled upon a spent ingredient from a small 1,000year-old brewery. That discovery evolved into a team from Chicago’s Field Museum team excavating a larger 500-gallon batch operation at Cerro Baul and the issuance of an ale inspired by the ingredients and brewing practices of the ancient Wari people. In the recent craft-beer booms, brewers have turned to ancient civilizations’ obscure, millenniaold recipes using corn, rice, peppers and berries to set themselves apart from their colleagues’ beers as well as the vast majority of modern beer, which is brewed primarily with barley, hops and yeast. “They started spreading out and trying other things, and it turned out that ancient people were doing the same thing,” said Patrick McGovern, an ancient

beverage expert at the University of Pennsylvania Museum in Philadelphia. “It takes us back to our roots.” Wari Ale, the latest offering that taps ancient cultures for inspiration, carries the sourness of a corn mash with a late-breaking, delicate hint of sweetness from the pepper, said Patrick Ryan Williams, the museum’s associate curator and head of anthropology. “It’s very refreshing, clear, summer ale type,” Williams said of the purple beer, which was made by Chicago’s Off Color Brewing. “Maybe like a shandy.” Delaware-based Dogfish Head Craft Brewery was among the first to tap into ancient beers market in 1999 as part of col-

laboration with McGovern. The recipe for the beer-wine-mead hybrid brew Midas Touch — honey, barley malt, white muscat grapes and saffron — came from molecular evidence found in a Turkish tomb believed to have belonged to King Midas. Inspirations for later Dogfish Head ancients, which McGovern will be chronicling in his upcoming book “Liquid Time Capsules,” include a 3,500-year-old Danish drinking vessel, 3,400-year-old pottery fragments found in Honduras and a 9,000-year-old tomb from Neolithic China. A 2009 batch of the traditional Peruvian chicha replicated the ancient act of milling and moistening the corn in Dogfish brewers’ mouths before adding it into the boil. Attendees of the Great American Beer Festival couldn’t wait to try it, McGovern said. “The line of people across the Denver Convention Center was unbelievable,” he said.

To map out a process for a modern take on chicha, Williams and a team of researchers brewed experimental batches in Peru using locally grown corn and pepper berries. “We used reproduction ceramic vessels of the boiling jars and we did it over an open fire using natural woods and fuel,” Williams said. “We really wanted to understand how the brew was created.” The batches gave the scientists a pretty good idea of how the brew should taste, and then the museum took its information to Off Color Brewing. To be called a beer in the U.S., breweries must use barley and hops, so those ingredients were incorporated into the recipe. “So it’s not an exact recreation,” Williams said. “It’s a chicha de molle-inspired ale. Off Color co-founder David Bleitner brewed some small batches until settling on a method that would work for a large-scale replication, overcoming logistical challenges such as finding an importer to source the purple corn from Peru. “We’ve never done anything like this before,” Bleitner said. “This was probably the most work I’ve ever put into concepting and making a beer.” (ap)

Preserving tradition of lukat geni To purify macrocosm and microcosm

SEMARAPURA - Residents of Satria Kawan Palace at Paksebali village, Dawan implemented lukat geni tradition at catus pata (central intersection) of Paksebali village on new moon of the ninth month in Balinese calendar, Tuesday (Mar. 8). The tradition having been implemented through generations poses the purification of macrocosm and microcosm. The lukat geni followed by dozens of youth is carried out every night of the Pengerupukan to welcome the Caka New Year. Lukat Geni is interpreted as spiritual purification and the balance the universe by means of fire. The fire used is derived from a bundle of burned dried palm leaves. Lukat geni tradition is started with a self-purification at sacred spring and performing joint worship at family temple. Accompanied by baleganjur gamelan music and 33 torches, the participants of lukat geni headed for central intersection to start the procession. Here, dozens of youths taking part in the tradition of lukat geni hit their respective opponents in turns by means of fire set in palm leaves. No revenge is seen among the participants. According to senior figure of Satria Kawan Palace, A.A. Gde Agung Rimawan, the lukat geni is a tradition having existed at Satria Kawan Palace since long time ago. This tradition is held every year to welcome the Caka New Year. It poses a form of purification of macrocosm and microcosm. “Hopefully, with this lukat geni we can be bestowed with safety, both for ourselves and the surrounding environment,” said Rimawan. He explained the lukat geni tradition uses fire of 36 pieces of dried palm leaves tied together or summed into nine (9) located in the nine points of the compass or Dewata Nawa Sanga. In addition, the use of 33 torches represents the strength of 33 gods abiding in five places, namely the Eastern or White (5), South or Red (9), West or Yellow (7), North or Black (4) and Central or multicolor (8). “These signify the invocation of protection or safety for ritual processions in progress,” he explained. A participant of the lukat geni procession, A.A. Gde Agung Aris Pratama, stated that he participated in the lukat geni to preserve the tradition and cultural heritage from their ancestors. “Through this lukat geni tradition, we muffled the anger inside,” said a teenager that regularly participates in this annual tradition. Another participant, A.A. Gde Bagus Alit Putra, claimed to be proud to help preserve this tradition. It is the first time for him to participate in the tradition and claimed not to feel hot when being hit by his opponent using a fire of palm leaves. “There is no feeling of heat. It is meant to preserve the traditions and cultural heritages,” he said. (dwa)

GIANYAR— Starting the Caka New Year 1938 (Balinese New Year), on Thursday (March 10) thousands of villagers from Lebih Customary Village rallied together to protest against the Benoa Bay reclamation plan, by voicing their desire to have Presidential Regulation N0.51/2014 -that opened the way for reclamation, repealed. Lebih Village’s official declaration of their opposition to the reclamation of Benoa Bay began with a group prayer at the village’s Dalem Temple at around 14:30. After the group prayer session, thousands of protesters -mostly young people, headed to Lebih Beten Kelod’s hamlet hall to gather their signs and other props that

were created to voice their opposition to the reclamation project. Accompanied by gamelan music, the people then walked southward crossing Jalan Bypass I.B Mantra to Lebih Beach where they stood on the breakwater holding their banners and chanting slogans of protest against the Benao Bay reclamation plan.

Chief of Lebih customary village, I Wayan Wisma, joined the protest and in his speech to the crowd, spoke of the many hectares of land owned by residents of Lebih Village, that have already been swept away by abrasion. This abrasion he pointed out became severe after the reclamation that was undertaken to create Sarangan Island. “Based on the subak chief’s records, in 1960, Lebih Customary Village spread over some 86 hectares. After the reclamation of Serangan Island in 1994, massive abrasion started occurring and today there only remains 16 hectares of our village” he said.

To my knowledge, the districts of Bangli, Karangasem, Buleleng and Jembrana remain untouched by tourism development and are instead spoon fed special financial assistance that does little to actually help them” he said. Coordinator ForBALI, Wayan ‘Gendo’ Suardana, who participated in the protest said that there was no

option for the government apart from stopping the Benoa Bay reclamation plan and that he hopes President Jokowi will immediately revoke Presidential Regulation No. 51/2014. “As of today there are 26 customary villages in Bali that have officially expressed their opposition or rejection of the plan: 13 villages in the district of Badung , 8 in Denpasar, 2 in Gianyar (Lebih and Ketewel) and 3villages in Karangasem” he explained. Gendo went on to say that the government needs to hear this expression of opposition to the reclamation plan and understand that it is a warning that such government policies run contrary to the will of the people. Moreover, Lebih customary village residents and others in Bali have been traumatized by the abrasion caused by the reclamation of Serangan Island in 1994. “Today, they see for themselves how abrasion continues to eat away at coastal areas. Lebih customary village does not want to become like a donkey. Hulk Hogan’s side rests after slamming Gawker in sex tape lawsuit

ST. PETERSBURG - Attorneys for wrestling celebrity Hulk Hogan rested their $100 million privacy invasion case against the Gawker news outlet on Friday, wrapping up a lively week of testimony in a Florida lawsuit examining the posting of a sex tape in modern media. Next week, Gawker will call its witnesses, which could include website founder Nick Denton and the editor behind the post, as the civil trial continues in St. Petersburg, Florida, near the wrestler’s home. It also may show the tape to the jury. Gawker’s one-minute, 41-second edited excerpt shows Hogan having consensual sex with the wife of his then best friend, radio “shock jock” personality Bubba the Love Sponge. The 62-year-old former professional wrestler, whose legal name is Terry Bollea, told jurors he still is suffering from the humiliation of the sex tape’s posting in 2012. Hogan said he did not know the

encounter was being recorded when it took place five years earlier in Bubba’s home. Hogan’s side on Friday highlighted the video’s viral spread, with an expert witness tallying that it reached millions more than the 2.5 million who saw it on Gawker over six months. Testimony this week ranged from journalism ethics and website analytics to Hogan’s public statements about his sex life, including the his penis size. Hogan, one the wrestling world’s lead figures in the 1980s and ‘90s, emphasized a distinction he drew between his true personality and the bombastic persona he used professionally with “artistic liberty.”

The Hogan side presented examples this week designed to question Gawker’s approach to sexual content. In a taped video deposition, former editor A.J. Daulerio called celebrity sex tapes newsworthy unless involving a child. When pressed on an age, he drew the line at under four. Gawker later called the age reference a “flip” response. On Friday, attorneys for Hogan read some of Daulerio’s emails regarding a woman seeking the removal of a video showing her having sex in a public bathroom. Indonesia begins efforts to tackle forest fires

Jakarta -Authorities in western Indonesia began efforts to fight forest fires, as the dry season begins to set in.

Last week, the Sumatran province declared a state of emergency over fires spreading rapidly because of strong winds. In just two months, more than 200 hectares of forests there have been razed, Channel

News Asia reported. More than 700 personnel from the military, police and forestry ministry have been deployed to put out the fires in Riau. For the first time, coordinated joint patrols are also being deployed, not only to detect fires but also to educate the population on fire prevention. On Monday, the Riau provincial

government declared its highest level of disaster readiness since fires were detected in at least three districts two months ago. The environment and forestry ministry said 10 people have so far been questioned for allegedly starting the fires. Riau was one of the provinces severely affected by forest fires last year, made worse by the prolonged

dry season caused by the El Nino weather pattern. It was considered to be one of the worst environmental disasters in recent years, costing the Indonesian government an estimated $16 billion. The haze from the fires choked its neighbours Singapore and Malaysia - and several parts of Thailand -- causing schools, offices and
