Ulun Danu Temple at Batur Customary Village moved in 1926 In the Purana Bali chronicle written by Ida Pedanda Gede Pemaron from Geria Agung Menara, Munggu Village, Mengwi Subdistrict, Badung Regency, is mentioned that Lord Vishnu has created the Mount Batur, Lake Batur as heaven of Goddess Uma, Lake Buyan as heaven of Goddess Ganges, Lake Beratan as heaven of Goddess Lakshmi as well as Lake Tamblingan as heaven of Goddess Sri. Meanwhile, Lord Pasupati (Shiva) asked the Lord Putrajaya and Goddess Danuh to worship Benoa Bangsul (Bali Island) as well as abided in person on the island that would be venerated by Balinese people. Local devotees previously had a clan name of Pasek Semeru but it was then renamed to Pasek Batur. At Batur Village, local residents were not allowed to look for kepasekan or pasek clan title because they had venerated Ratu Gede Ngurah Kepasekan. Later on, the community was divided in two eastern and western divisions. Now, it can be traced back by the existence of Batur headman of western and eastern area. Similarly, there was Jero Batur of Western and Eastern group. Apparatus of Ulun Danu Batur Temple consists of Jero Gede Makalihan, Jero Balian Mekalihan and 22 temple priests. The Ulun Danu Batur Temple has close relation to subak (traditional irrigation cooperative) group. The Penataran Batur Temple has 16 apparatuses consisting of 4 pulai, 4 pemumpunan, 4 pesagi and 4 kedis as well as a village chief that was spiritually initiated as Jero Mekel Jaba Jero. As consequence, the Ulun Danu Batur Temple and
Penataran Batur Temple has apparatus amounting to 45 people. Batur has some popular titles such as 45 pepasih subak, 45 headmen, sound marker of time at 04:00 until 5:00 a.m. Local Time is beaten for 45 times. Meanwhile, the number of deity abiding in the Ulun Danu Batur and Penataran Batur Temple is 45. When the Mount Batur erupts, the local customary villagers organize a ceremony to welcome the Goddess Danuh because the Mount Batur is the abode of the goddess. Similarly, if there is a man dying due to an accident within the area of Mount Batur, the Batur customary village will organize a balik sumpah ceremony to re-purify the Mount Batur and Lake Batur denoting the abode of Goddess Danu. Meanwhile, in the Babad Batur chronicle (Kirtya No. 839) and Raja Purana Batur chronicle are stated that in the past time the Mount Batur was also called Mount Lebah (mount of lower land) because it was situated on a lower land. In the Raja Purana Batur is mentioned under the chapter of patisora, a candra sangkala saying angeseng wak au Caka 110 (188 AD) that Mount Batur erupted terrifically and another eruption is mentioned in the candra sangkala saying wedang sumirating ksiti or Caka 114 (192 AD). Large earthquake shook the entire Bali due to eruption of Mount Batur occurred on January 21, 1917, and then followed by an earthquake on February 4, 1917 where two-thirds of the Buahan villagers, Kintamani, died because they were buried by landslides from the Mount Tuluk Biu.
The tsunami disaster hitting Japan was feared to have a direct impact on the number of tourists visit from the blossom cherry country to Bali. Decline in the number of Japanese tourist to Bali was estimated to last for relatively long time until the condition of Japan thoroughly recovered. On that account, government was asked to be more active in increasing the foreign tourist market from other countries to maintain the stability in the number of tourist visits. The expectation was expressed by a member of Commission B of Badung House, Wayan Puspa Negara, Saturday (Mar 12). According to him, the statistical data indicated that Japanese tourists visiting Bali always occupied the top ten. Even, in 2007 through 2009, Japan ranked first. Meanwhile, the current average of Japanese tourist to Bali per day
reached 2,562 people. “Of course, the incidence of earthquake and tsunami in the country will weaken and reduce significantly the number of Japanese tourists visiting Bali. Nevertheless, we remain concerned and also pray for Japan. Hopefully, Japan could recover soon,” he said. On the other hand, the decline in the number of Japanese tourist visits to Bali, for the Badung Regency, would have a direct impact on the regionally generated revenue (PAD). Therefore, Puspa said that to anticipate the decline in Japanese tourist visits, stakeholders especially government should be able to spur other markets such as Russian market. Recently, the Russian market kept on increasing. Even, it exceeded the number of Japanese tourists. Again, Masked Robbers Attacks IDR 3 Million Cash Taken Tabanan, DenPost
A sadist robbery attacked I Wayan Sukarata (50) last Saturday (12/3) around 2 am local time. IDR 3 million cash with other documents were taken from the circle wood industrialist in Banjar Jelijih Tegeh, Megati Village, East Selemadeg, Tabanan. Victim vividly remembers what happened to him, his wife Ni Made Surni (45) and daughter in law Ni Putu Juniasih (30), as five armed masked robbers torture them that night. It was said they came in through the back door which woke Sukarata up as he was sleeping in a no door bale Bali. In a matter of second, he was threaten with a reaping hook and asked for cash. From his waist bag robbers took IDR 2.5 million, documents like Driving Licence and a motorcycle Vehicle Number Place Document also IDR 500,000 from his shirt pocket.
Not only that, they then tied him and his wife using plastic rope, scarf and taped their mouths. As they were taking down one of the folded windows in the northern part of the house, Juniasih went out. She was then also tied up and taped. Not long after that, Wayan Darmini, who’s at the kitchen seeing the event initiatively hit the cupboards creating unfriendly sounds so other residents would get up and help them. In the same time Juniasih kept trying to get free which cause one of the robbers harshly pushed her, hitting her face to the ground. Yet they panicked and so escaped through the
back door. After the three victims managed to get off their tying, they then informed other residents and so a kulkul (hitting device to communicate) was hit continuously. The residents couldn’t capture the robbers as they vanished in the early morning darkness. According to witnesses’ statements, there were four masked robbers and one unmasked but its face unrecognized in the darkness. Tabanan Police Resort Public Relation Head, Police Commissioner Wayan Sukerta, stated the case is still being investigated. (121)

Governor of Bali Made Mangku Pastika did not rejected if his party did not have concrete data related to the number of Balinese residents who currently resided in Japan whether for working, traveling or continuing their education. This former Bali Police Chief also hoped there were no Balinese residents becoming the victims of tsunami disaster devastating Japan on Friday (Mar 11). For the purpose of data collection on Balinese residents in Japan, his party had formally intensified the coordination with relevant agencies in central government such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Labor. “For that interest, I myself had contacted our ambassador in Japan,” said Governor Mangku Pastika to reporters on the sidelines of the Dharma Santi Nyepi in Jayasabha, Denpasar, Saturday (Mar 12). Mangku Pastika expected the employment agencies and the family to report the identity of Balinese residents who were in Japan to Provincial Government of Bali and regency/city govern-
ment in Bali. Confirmed, his party was trying to make data collection as well as monitor their whereabouts. “I do hope, there are no residents of Bali, including other Indonesian residents, becoming the victims in the accident,” he said hopefully. Furthermore, Mangku Pastika also reminded Balinese residents, especially those residing near the coastal territory to raise awareness because the potential occurrence of earthquakes accompanied by tsunami could occur in Indonesia, including Bali. He said that Bali Provincial Government also had facilities to detect early occurrence of tsunami accompanied by optimizing the tasks and roles of the Crisis Centre and Pusdalops in anticipation of any disasters that might ensue in Bali. “All facilities are fully in operation for 24 hours to do the monitoring. Conditions of the tsunami early-detection facilities are all in good condition because they are regularly tested on 26th of each month,” he said while adding that the facility was installed at some points considered hazardous. Libyan TV: Gadhafi forces take oil town of Brega Associated Press Writer
BENGHAZI, Libya – Libyan state television reported Sunday that forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi have retaken the oil town of Brega in eastern Libya, swiftly advancing on the poorly equipped and loosely organized rebels. The report could not immediately be verified. Libyan TV has issued faulty reports claiming territory in the past. Gadhafi’s forces pushed the front line miles deeper into rebel territory Saturday to just 25 miles (40 kilometers) outside Brega, the site of a major oil terminal. Sunday’s report declared the city has been “cleansed from armed gangs.” The rebels have seen a string of defeats in recent days — a major setback for opposition forces who just a week ago held the entire eastern half of the country and were charging toward the capital, Tripoli. The rebels have called for a nofly zone, saying they are no match for the Gadhafi regime’s fighter jets. On Saturday, the Arab League asked the U.N. Security Council to
impose a no-fly zone, increasing pressure on the U.S. and other Western powers to take action that most have expressed deep reservations about. In surprisingly swift action and aggressive language, the 22-member Arab bloc said after an emergency meeting that the Libyan government had “lost its sovereignty.” It asked the United Nations to “shoulder its responsibility ... to impose a no-fly zone over the movement of Libyan military planes and to create safe zones in the places vulnerable to airstrikes.” Western diplomats have said Arab and African approval was necessary before the Security Council voted on imposing a no-fly zone, which would
be imposed by NATO nations to protect civilians from air attack by Gadhafi’s forces. The U.S. and many allies have expressed deep reservations about the effectiveness of a no-fly zone, and the possibility it could drag them into another messy conflict in the Muslim world. Outside the rebel stronghold of Benghazi deep in opposition territory, Al-Jazeera cameraman Ali Hassan al-Jaber was killed in what the pan-Arab satellite station described as an ambush. Correspondent Baybah Wald Amhadi said the crew’s car came under fire from the rear as it returned from an assignment south of Benghazi. Al-Jaber was shot three times in the back and a fourth bullet hit another correspondent near the ear and wounded him, Amhadi said. “Even areas under rebel control are not totally safe,” he said. “There are followers, eyes or fifth columns, for Col. Gadhafi.”

JERUSALEM – Israel said Sunday it has approved hundreds of settler homes after five members of an Israeli family — including three children — were knifed to death as they slept in a West Bank settlement over the weekend. The attack and the government’s response threatened to drive IsraeliPalestinian peacemaking even further out of reach. Israel, which blames the attack on Palestinian militants, is liable to set aside an emerging peace initiative it had planned to propose, while the planned construction of new settler homes only deepened Palestinian mistrust of Israel. The settlement construction, approved Saturday night by the
Cabinet’s ministerial team on settlements, would take place in major West Bank settlement blocs that Israel expects to hold on to in any final peace deal, the prime minister’s office said in a text message to reporters. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is under domestic pressure to respond harshly to the killings, is a member of that team. A government official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to release this information to the media, said between 300 and 500 apartments and homes were approved for construction. Palestinian opposition to settlement construction on lands they want for a future state has brought negotiations to a virtual standstill over the past two years, with Palestinians re-

The chief US diplomat is due first in Paris for face-to-face talks with Libya’s opposition before she travels to Tunisia and Egypt, where she will become the highest-level US official to visit since their presidents were toppled. In Paris on Monday, Clinton will also meet her counterparts
from host France as well as Russia, Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy and Japan to discuss combat-torn Libya amid divisions over calls for foreign military intervention. Her visit comes as forces loyal to Colonel Moamer Kadhafi have recaptured some lost territory and as top US spy James Clapper has said Kadhafi’s regime will prevail in the long run despite US and international calls for him to go. Abdel Rahman Shalgam, Libya’s ambassador to the United Nations who has joined Kadhafi opponents, said in Washington that Clinton would meet in Paris on Monday with Mahmoud Jibril, from the opposition National Council.
On Thursday in Washington, Clinton met Ali Aujali, the Libyan ambassador to Washington who has also defected to the opposition, a Clinton aide told AFP. Both Shalgam and Aujali said they have met both State Department and Treasury Department US officials. Gene Cretz, the US ambassador to Libya, met last week in Cairo with opposition figures. The United States has also agreed to name a special envoy to deal with the opposition, but has refrained from recognizing any particular leader or group as it struggles to understand the nebulous movement.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Italy court hears new witnesses in Knox appeal Reuters
PERUGIA, Italy – New witnesses spoke in the trial for the murder of Briton Meredith Kercher Saturday, giving evidence that lawyers for Amanda Knox hope will dent a claim she was seen near to where her roommate was killed. Knox and her former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito are appealing against prison sentences of 26 and 25 years respectively for their role in the killing, which prosecutors say was the result of an extreme sex game that turned violent. Twenty-one-year-old Kercher was found half-naked and with her throat slit in a flat she shared with U.S. student Knox in the university city of Perugia, on November 2, 2007. A key prosecution witness, homeless Antonio Curatolo, had said during the original trial that he saw Knox and Sollecito a few meters from Kercher’s flat on the night of the murder. He said he saw the defendants in a car park where coaches were taking students to a local disco. Witnesses called by the defense Saturday, which included coach operators and disco workers, said there were no bus services on the night of the murder, and that discos were
closed following a busy Halloween night. Curatolo is due to appear as a witness again in the next hearing on March 26. The Perugia court said in December it would hear new witnesses and also new expert evidence concerning the knife allegedly used as the murder weapon. Knox’s stepfather Chris Mellas said the evidence Saturday could potentially be a turning point, but lawyers for the prosecution said it did not add anything useful. The case has attracted huge media attention in Italy and abroad, with family and friends of Knox, and some U.S. media saying her conviction was a miscarriage of justice.

In a rare piece of good news, the Defense Ministry said a military vessel on Sunday rescued a 60-year-old man floating off the coast of Fukushima on the roof of his house after being swept away in the tsunami. He was in good condition. The U.S. Geological Survey calculated the initial quake to have a magnitude of 8.9, while Japanese officials raised their estimate on Sunday to 9.0. Either way it was the strongest quake ever recorded in Japan. It has been followed by more than 150 powerful aftershocks. Teams searched for the missing along hundreds of miles (kilometers) of Japanese coastline, and hundreds of thousands of hungry survivors huddled in darkened emergency centers that were cut off from rescuers and aid. some 2.5 million households were without electricity. Temperatures were to dip near freezing overnight, but the prime minister warned that electricity would not be restored for days. The government says it has sent 120,000 blankets, 120,000 bottles of water and 110,000 liters of gasoline in addition to bread, rice balls, instant cup noodles and diapers to the affected areas. BEIJING – Two Chinese dissidents who were sentenced to 10 years in prison for getting together to talk about political reform and posting their views online have been released after completing their jail terms, their fathers said Sunday. Xu Wei, a former reporter, and Jin Haike, a writer, were detained in 2001 and convicted of subversion in 2003 after taking part in an informal study group in Beijing that met privately to talk about democratic reform. Their fathers said that both were released Saturday. The harsh sentences given to the men were a sign that China’s intolerance of political dissent remained entrenched despite dramatic moves to reshape and liberalize the country’s economic system. Friends and supporters had repeatedly sought medical parole for Jin, who underwent a botched appendectomy in prison and suffered abdominal pain and other health problems. His father, Jin Jiangguo, said his 33-year-old son planned to stay with his family for the next
year or so while recovering. Xu staged several hunger strikes in prison after clashing with prison guards and allegedly suffered mental problems, rights groups have said. Xu’s father, whose mobile phone disconnected before he could give his full name, said that he only saw his son briefly on Saturday but that he seemed healthy. Jin, Xu and two other defendants, who became known as the “Four Gentlemen of Beijing,” were convicted of subversion based mainly on a batch of Internet postings that called for political reform. “This was one of the first cases that involved an allegedly antigovernment group organizing around the Internet,” said Joshua Rosenzweig, research manager for the U.S.-based human rights group Dui Hua Foundation. “In a way, it was a sign of things to come because the Internet since then has become the chief virtual space in which political discussions takes place (in China).” The two other members of the group, Yang Zili and Zhang Honghai, were released in 2009 after completing 8-year prison terms.

TANGSE - Flash floods blamed on illegal logging killed 13 people and left six missing in Indonesia’s Aceh province, officials and a resident said Friday. Thousands of people had to be evacuated as water surged through villages following hours of heavy rain on Thursday. “We found eight dead bodies and are still searching for six people reportedly missing,” local official Muhammad Jafar told AFP in Tangse, a town 180 kilometres (110 miles) southeast of the provincial capital Banda Aceh. “Before the floods came, people were just relaxing in their houses. When they heard a roaring sound, they panicked and started to run to the hills to save their lives,” another
official, Nazir Adam, said. In another village, Alue Jambee, five people in one family were killed instantly by the flash flood as they tried to flee to higher ground. “At first it was just small flood, we all rushed to the hill. But suddenly waters came and swept all of us,” a 30-year old woman called Suryani, who lost her three children, husband and father told AFP. “I happened to be dragged away by the waters but I managed to save my life,” she said. Adam said the number of dead could rise as one village had been completely cut off by the waters. “The floods occurred because of illegal logging activity surrounding this area. There are many logs scattered on the road here now which came with the floods,” he said.

JAKARTA - The Indonesian government has sent a reply to two Australian newspapers that have reported wikileaks documents accusing President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as having abused his power. “We have sent a reply,” Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto told reporters at the presidential palace compound Friday. He said the two newspapers, namely The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, had not implemented good journalism principles. The two newspapers had reported information they had not yet verified. “The information should have been clarified first to see if it was true or not. Only after that could it be reported. As the President has said, the information is not true at all,” he said. Djoko said the reply was served also as a form of protest to the two media outlets for having worked without respect for good journalism principles. “Moreover, the story is related to the credibility of a head of state. Are
you not offended when your head of state is insulted like that,” he said. Presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha had earlier said that Indonesia would use its right to reply to respond to the two media outlets‘ stories. At a press conference at the presidential office, Julian denied the truth of the story that was based on Wikileaks documents. Djoko said the Australian media reports did not affect national security. “Our people are smart enough to select information,” he said. He said Indonesia had often been hit by Wikileaks reports but he hoped people and the national media could find the truth. He said The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald should have checked the truth of the information that came from secret wires from the US embassy in Jakarta that were
leaked to Wikileaks with the Indonesian government first, before carrying it in their stories. Thereby they would have practiced the journalistic principle of covering both sides, he said. Moreover, he said, the US embassy would report information to Washington based on the bare facts. “The reporting that the Embassy does to Washington is candid, absurd and raw information,” he said. He also said that the report to Washington would not affect the policy that would be taken due to the information. JAKARTA – One of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes has erupted, sending lava and searing gas clouds tumbling down its slopes. Volcanology official Agus Budianto said Friday that authorities were still trying to evacuate residents living along the slopes of Mount Karangetang. There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.
The 5,853-foot (1,784-meter) mountain is located on Siau, part of the Sulawesi island chain. It last erupted in August, killing four people. Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago, is located on the so-called Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin. The eruption happened hours after a massive earthquake in Japan that triggered a Pacific-wide tsunami.

Another version about Galungan is mentioned by the manuscript Jaya Kasunu. It is said that the king Jaya Kasunu (AD 1204), meditated (held dewa sraya) to invoke guidance. His problem was that not one of his predecessors could rule longer. Through his solemn meditation he was inspired that he should re-organize religious activities, such as Galungan. No matter what the version is, the essence of these mythologies implies that a devotee or creation should maintain their persistent contact to his Creator. The âtman dwelling
within the human self should maintain his contact to Brahman, the Creator. By doing so, humans can continuously obtain the illumination to walk in the path of dharma. As manifestation of gratitude, devotees express it through worship at temples, garden, rice field and so forth. Everything that has given prosperity is also offered an oblation, including the means of transportation. If you happen to take an excursion on that day you of course will rub up against many cars affixed with young coconut paraphernalia. Hopefully, the festivity does not come to an end at the vibrant fiesta marked with grandiose oblation, assorted delicious food or luxurious paraphernalia. All the times it should help the spiritual development. Anything achieved in this life either tangible or intangible entities, should not make us arrogant. Sometimes, when having abundance of wealth or higher educational background, a human feels superior or more powerful than others. Even, it is not employed as a milestone to improve his devotion to God. It’s here where the achievement drags human to sluggish condition or gorge of destruction. Like Mayadanawa, he forgot that there is a vast sky above him. His power has led him to his dissolution. If we do not want to become the next Mayadanawa, consistent devotion must be established. Overview: There are a couple of variations on this popular cake, which can be stored in the refrigerator for several days. It is normally served at room temperature, but can also be served warm topped with coconut milk. Another variations are to add ripe diced jackfruits (or substitute with sultanas) after the rice is partially cooked. Ingredients: 1 cup glutinous white rice 1 cup water 1 pandan leaf ½ cup palm sugar syrup ¼ cup thick coconut milk Pinch of salt Preparation: Rinse rice very well under running water for 2 minutes and soak for 4 hours. Rinse again until water becomes clear. Place rice, 1 cup of water and pandan leaf in rice cooker or steamer and cook for approx 20 minutes, or until liquid has evaporated. Add palm sugar syrup, coconut milk and salt, and steam for 15 minutes. Spread rice evenly 2.5 cm thick on tray and allow to cool to room temperature. Wet a sharp knife with warm and cut into even squares to serve.
Helpful hint: to speed up the soaking process, pour boiling water over the rice and let stand for 1 hour. Drain, then add another lot of boiling water and soak for another 30 minutes. WASHINGTON - The earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on Friday forced multinational companies to close factories, fight fires and move workers, inflicting at least short-term damage on the Japan’s fragile economy. Assessing the full economic impact was impossible in the hours after the quake. But traffic clogged streets, trains stopped, flights were grounded and phone service was disrupted or cut off. U.S. companies DuPont and Procter & Gamble said communications problems made it hard to gauge the effect on their operations in Japan. Japanese stocks plunged. The benchmark Nikkei index fell 1.7 percent, and the Japanese market was only open for about 15 minutes after the quake. Still, the damage to Japan’s economy, the world’s third-largest, wasn’t nearly as severe as it might have been. The devastated northeastern coastal region is far less developed than the Tokyo metro area. “Something similar hitting Tokyo Bay would have been unimaginable,” said Michael Smitka, an economist who specializes in Japan at Washington and Lee University. And in the long run, the disaster could help the Japanese economy as reconstruction projects put people back to work. Natural disasters “do eventually boost output,” said David Hensley, an economist at JPMorgan Chase. The 1989 San Francisco earthquake and the 1994 Northridge quake outside Los Angeles, for example, ultimately helped the local California economies, he said. Takuji Okubo, an analyst at French bank Societe Generale, said Japan’s economy will probably take a hit in March and then rebound strongly. Japanese consumers will need to replace lost cars and appliances, and reconstruction will start. “The earthquake will most likely lead to stronger growth in 2011, rather than weaker,” Okubo said. Okubo noted that industrial production in Japan fell 2.6 percent in January 1995, the month of the devastating earthquake near the city of Kobe. But it rebounded 2.2 percent the following month and 1 percent the month after that. Overall, Japan’s economy grew 1.9 percent that year and 2.6 percent in 1996, Okubo said — faster than the anemic pace it had been growing. In 1996, private consumption rose at double the rate of an average year between 1995 and 2004. On Friday, Japanese auto companies halted production at some assembly plants. But it was not clear whether the catastrophe would have a major

Japan’s central Aichi prefecture, site of much of the country’s auto manufacturing, is far from the disaster zone in northeastern Japan. Analysts said the damage to production seemed to be limited. But the status of the ports and roads that automakers rely on to move their vehicles remains unclear. “I don’t think in the end it’s going to be more than a passing impact,” said Ephraim Levy, an auto industry analyst with Standard & Poor’s Equity Research. “It would mostly impact Japanese sales, including exports. Some of that may just be deferred rather than lost.” The Japanese economy has been stagnant for more than a decade. It shrank at a 1.3 percent annual pace in the final three months of 2010. By contrast, the U.S. government estimates the American economy grew at a 2.8 percent annual rate over the same period. Japan’s central bank vowed to do everything necessary to keep financial markets stable, including pumping cash into the financial system. Toyota Motor Corp., the world’s biggest automaker, closed two auto assembly plants. The company operates 15 plants in Japan. Honda is closing four plants temporarily. A Honda employee was killed and more than 30 people were injured when walls and parts of a ceiling crumbled at a Honda research facility in northeastern Tochigi prefecture, the company said. Nissan Motor Co. shut down production at five of its plants in northeastern Japan and in the Yokohama area near Tokyo. It said two workers were slightly injured at its Tochigi plant and its technical center in Kanagawa prefecture, near Tokyo. For Japanese manufacturers overall, “there will be losses for a couple of months because of disruptions to
the supply chain,” Smitka says. Research firm IHS iSuppli said it expects shipments of electronic chips from Japanese factories to be slowed in the next two weeks by the disruption of transportation links. Japan is also a crucial supplier of components for LCD screens, used in TVs, laptop computers and phones. Air traffic was disrupted. Seven United flights and two Continental flights from the United States to Tokyo’s Narita International Airport were diverted overnight, mostly to other airports in Asia. Delta canceled 29 flights into and out of Tokyo. Japan is just weeks away from its peak tourism season: late March and early April, when cherry trees blossom, said Alastair Donnelly, cofounder of InsideJapan Tours, a British company that sends more than 5,000 tourists from the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and Australia to Japan each year. “I encourage people still to travel. Japan will need support from tourism,” Donnelly said. Tourism to the beach communities of Southeast Asia dried up after the 2004 tsunami, devastating the livelihood of the survivors. Japan is a big grain and beef importer, but the disaster probably won’t hurt the world’s food markets significantly, said Darin Newsom, senior analyst at Telvent DTN in Omaha, Neb. “Certainly it’s catastrophic in Japan, but not for the global markets probably,” Newsome said. Japan’s government debt is already at alarming levels: 225 percent of economic output, one of the highest figures in the world. Even at a time of heightened concern about the federal deficit, U.S. government debts were just 59 percent of output last year. Japan’s debt burden raises questions about Japan’s ability to finance a massive rebuilding program.
BRUSSELS (AFP) – Eurozone leaders agreed Saturday to boost defences against a destabilising debt crisis stalking weaker members by strengthening a debt rescue fund and increasing economic policy coordination. European Council President Herman van Rompuy said the agreements, to be finalised at a full EU summit March 24-25, “should allow us to finally turn the corner” on a crisis that has tested the whole euro project to breaking point. Van Rompuy spoke after drawn-out talks, which ended shortly before dawn and saw testy exchanges between new Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny and his colleagues over the terms of Dublin’s debt rescue. Greece meanwhile earned praise and easier repayment conditions. After Greece was bailed out last May to save it from a debt default, the EU set up the European Financial Stability Facility with funds of 440 billion euros ($610 billion) to help others in need — in the event, Ireland in December. The EFSF, however, can in practice only make some 250 billion euros available — but this will be increased to a full 500 billion euros under the permanent European Stability Mechanism which replaces it in 2013, van Rompuy said. The systems will also be allowed to buy up government bonds directly, providing another important source of funds for countries facing funding problems. These changes have been in the pipeline for some time as the financial markets have heaped pressure on weaker eurozone states struggling to raise fresh money to help stabilise their public finances. Van Rompuy said the meeting had also adopted a ‘Euro Pact,’ which “expresses everybody’s strong political commitment to do what is required for our common good, the euro. “All 17 leaders of the eurozone are convinced that their economies need to be more competitive and more convergent. This is key,” he said.
Germany, Europe’s powerhouse economy, had wanted progress on the pact and especially its policy convergence provisions in return for increasing the funds available to the EFSF and ESM. The pact covers four areas for closer cooperation — competitiveness, employment, sustainable public finances and reinforcing financial stability. Individual states will be responsible for specific measures — an important caveat for smaller members jealous of their independence — but they are all supposed to work towards these same goals. The logic is that if eurozone states have the same goals and obey the same rules, then the huge debt burdens and public deficits straining public finances and threatening the euro will ultimately be brought under control. Van Rompuy said that the “objectives may sound familiar. What has changed, however, is the political commitment.” The Financial Times however called the summit a “wasted opportunity”, saying that Germany and other creditor countries appeared to be “determined to foist their narrow recipes for reform” on the likes of Greece, Ireland and Portugal. “Eurozone policymakers are still reluctant to concede that the origins of the debt crisis lie not just in the policy errors of Irish and southern European governments but in the willingness of banks, in Germany and other ‘core’ countries as much as in the ‘peripherals’ to engage in reckless and dodgy investments,” the paper said in an editorial. “European leaders cannot afford to pretend much longer that all will be well with a bit more belt-tightening and a set of fiscal rules that lack credible enforcement mechanisms.” Agreement had at one stage looked uncertain as the talks dragged on, held up by sharp exchanges between Kenny and his peers over Dublin’s request to renegotiate the terms of its bailout.

New opening for ‘Spidey,’ Green Goblin gets stuck Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK – Broadway’s stunt-heavy, $65 million “Spider-Man” musical has experienced another technical glitch that left its lead villain dangling in midair, and the troubled production will shut down for more than three weeks this spring for an overhaul. Lead producers Michael Cohl and Jeremiah J. Harris said in a statement Friday that “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” which has been in previews for a record 103 performances, would officially open June 14. The show’s opening, delayed six times, was to have opened last on March 15. The final preview performance before the shutdown will be April 17. Performances will be canceled from April 19-May 11, with previews resuming on May 12. On Wednesday, producers announced that Tony Award-winning director Julie Taymor would no longer direct the show, and a new creative team was brought in to change and polish the flawed musical, which has also been plagued with a series of injuries to cast members and aerial stunt mishaps. The latest occurred Friday when the Green Goblin’s flight system failed during a fight scene, leaving him hanging over the stage for about three minutes before stagehands lowered him down. It was the second time this week that a technical problem interrupted a scene with the Goblin. The replacement of Taymor in her day-to-day duties was a stunning development for the heralded director of “The Lion King,” a megahit that is No. 3 at the box office more than a decade after it opened. LOS ANGELES – Mel Gibson used some lightning legal moves Friday to abruptly end a domestic violence case involving a fight last year with his then-girlfriend. Within hours, Gibson was charged with misdemeanor spousal battery and pleaded no contest in a deal with prosecutors that kept him out of jail. In a separate case, prosecutors announced they found insufficient evidence to pursue Gibson’s extortion allegations against Oksana Grigorieva, the victim in the battery case and the mother of Gibson’s infant daughter. As part of the plea deal, Gibson will spend three years on probation, undergo a year of domestic violence counseling, and perform 16 hours of community service. If he complies and doesn’t get into further trouble, he won’t have to make another court appearance in the case. Gibson, 55, dressed in a blue suit and blue striped shirt, said little during the brief hearing beyond acknowledging his rights and the
terms of the plea deal. Grigorieva did not attend the proceeding. The developments marked a swift ending to a legal saga that began last summer when Grigorieva, a Russian musician, reported Gibson had hit her during a fight at his Malibu home in January 2010. By the time she went to police, the pair were locked in a bitter custody battle and the actor soon accused her of attempting to extort him during negotiations for custody arrangements involving their daughter. Months of investigation by deputies followed. Sexist and racist rants by Gibson were leaked to celebrity website RadarOnline.com, and Grigorieva did interviews with Larry
King and People magazine detailing threats she attributed to Gibson. The custody battle continues in a Los Angeles court, but the proceeding is closed to the public and the records are sealed. In the battery case, Gibson entered a plea in which he did not admit guilt and cannot be used against him if Grigorieva files a lawsuit. His lawyer Blair Berk said the Academy Award winner made the move with the best interests of his children in mind. “It is with only that in mind that he asked me to approach the district attorney with a proposal that would bring all of this to an immediate end,” Berk said in a statement.

BEIJING – China’s culture ministry has confirmed American music legend Bob Dylan will be allowed to play in Beijing, the first time in the singer’s illustrious career he will have performed in the country. The ministry said in a brief statement that Dylan — the writer of some of rock’s most iconic and politically charged songs — must perform “strictly according to an approved program”. Dylan will be allowed to play in Beijing from March 30 to April 12,
the ministry said, without mentioning if the singer would also be granted permission to perform in Shanghai. Beijing-based promoters GehuaLiveNation said last week that Dylan, who turns 70 in May, would play in the capital’s Workers’ Gymnasium on April 6 and then hold a concert at the Shanghai Grand Stage in on April 8. The concerts were timed to mark Dylan’s 50 years as a performer, the promoters said. The news comes a year after a Taiwan promoter said its bid to take Dylan to China was scuttled after the Beijing government refused to ap-

Lost city of Atlantis, swamped by tsunami, may be found Reuters
NORTHAMPTON, Mass – A U.S.-led research team may have finally located the lost city of Atlantis, the legendary metropolis believed swamped by a tsunami thousands of years ago in mud flats in southern Spain. “This is the power of tsunamis,” head researcher Richard Freund told Reuters. “It is just so hard to understand that it can wipe out 60 miles inland, and that’s pretty much what we’re talking about,” said Freund, a University of Hartford, Connecticut, professor who lead an international team searching for the true site of Atlantis. To solve the age-old mystery, the team used a satellite photo of a suspected submerged city to find the site just north of Cadiz, Spain. There, buried in the vast marshlands of the Dona Ana Park, they believe that they pinpointed the ancient, multiringed dominion known as Atlantis.
The team of archeologists and geologists in 2009 and 2010 used a combination of deep-ground radar, digital mapping, and underwater technology to survey the site. Freund’s discovery in central Spain of a strange series of “memorial cities,” built in Atlantis’ image by its refugees after the city’s likely destruction by a tsunami, gave researchers added proof and confidence, he said. Atlantis residents who did not perish in the tsunami fled inland and built new cities there, he added. The team’s findings will be unveiled on
Sunday in “Finding Atlantis,” a new National Geographic Channel special. While it is hard to know with certainty that the site in Spain in Atlantis, Freund said the “twist” of finding the memorial cities makes him confident Atlantis was buried in the mud flats on Spain’s southern coast. “We found something that no one else has ever seen before, which gives it a layer of credibility, especially for archeology, that makes a lot more sense,” Freund said. Greek philosopher Plato wrote about Atlantis some 2,600 years ago, describing it as “an island situated in front of the straits which are by you called the Pillars of Hercules,” as the Straits of Gibraltar were known in antiquity. Using Plato’s detailed account of Atlantis as a map, searches have focused on the Mediterranean and Atlantic as the best possible sites for the city.
LONDON – Genetics is still the hottest area of scientific research, a decade on from the mapping of the human genome, despite slow progress in translating discoveries into new medical treatments. A Thomson Reuters Science Watch survey found seven of the top 13 researchers in 2010 worked in genetics, with Eric Lander of the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT the world’s “hottest” researcher. Lander’s work covered genetic mapping and human disease, including lung cancer. The annual survey, released on Thursday, looks at research across different scientific disciplines and uses the Web of Science database to see which papers published in the last two years are cited the most by other scientists. Ten years after the first full sequence of the human genome was published, early expectations of rapid breakthroughs in fighting
disease have proved misplaced. But academic interest has not slackened, and scientists remain hopeful that the tsunami of information unlocked by genomics, or the study of genetic sequences, will eventually yield big dividends. One early success, in fact, came just on Wednesday, with U.S. approval for Human Genome Sciences Inc’s lupus drug Benlysta, the first drug derived from genomics to win marketing clearance. It has been a long haul, however. Human Genome’s partner on Benlysta, GlaxoSmithKline Plc, first invested in the U.S. biotech company way back in 1993. For some drug companies progress has simply been too slow. Three of the hottest researchers in the latest Science Watch survey came from Iceland’s Decode Genetics, which pioneered deeper understanding of the relationships between genes and common diseases, but filed for bankruptcy protection in 2009 before re-emerging as a private business last year.

rina, University of Southern California biologist David Caron wrote in a summary of his laboratory’s findings which were reported by the Los Angeles Times. Caron said that he still believes that critically low oxygen levels in the water caused the sardines to suffocate, but it’s possible the toxin may have been one explanation for why they crowded into the marina. The California Department of Fish and Game has blamed the die-off on oxygen deprivation and is also testing fish for toxins at its animal forensics laboratory. Results are not expected until next week. Domoic acid is often found in the stomach of fish that have been feeding on plankton during toxic algae blooms. The toxin has been linked to neurological disorders, illnesses and deaths in seabirds, sea li-
ons, sea otters and whales. Caron’s lab is working to determine if the poisoning was caused by a toxic algae bloom spotted off Redondo Beach on Wednesday. The presence of the toxin in the sardines could lead to health complications for pelicans, gulls and other sea life that have been feasting on the dead fish. “There were tons of birds feeding on these fish and it’s conceivable that we’ll see some bird mortality as a result,” Caron said. The fish died late Monday and carpeted the water’s surface the next morning, stacking up to 2 feet deep in some places. Crews have already scooped and hauled away more than 85 tons of fish to a composting center where they will turn into fertilizer.

Arsenal will bounce back, says Wenger after Man Utd loss Agence France Presse
MANCHESTER, United Kingdom – Arsene Wenger insists his Arsenal side have the character to bounce back after being knocked out of three competitions in two weeks. Their latest setback came with a 2-0 FA Cup quarter final defeat at Manchester United on Saturday, which saw Johan Djourou ruled out for the rest of the season with a dislocated shoulder. It follows on from the disappointment of being knocked out of the Champions League round of 16 at Barcelona in midweek, after losing the League Cup final to Birmingham. Now, with no trophies since they won the FA Cup in 2005, their only remaining chance of silverware is in the Premier League. They currently trail Manchester United, who still have to travel to the Emirates, by three points but have a game in hand. Wenger maintains that his players have the mentality to cope with the frustration and push United all the way in the race for the title. He said: “I believe that we can do it but it’s a good test for us now to show that we can regroup and show the mental strength and togetherness and respond quickly. “We have a week without a
midweek game for the first time in a long time. But we have a good opportunity to show that we are solid. “I’m very disappointed that we lost three big challenges in a very strange way. “One was in the last minute to a goal that came from nowhere, one was under strange circumstances in Barcelona and now this. “We weren’t outplayed but we were punished by a team that was more clinical than us.” Wenger was critical of the tackling of United’s veteran midfielder Paul Scholes and admitted that his players had carried the disappointment of Barcelona into their trip to Old Trafford. The Frenchman believes that still being in contention when United travel to Arsenal in May will be key to winning the title. He added: “Things aren’t going our way at the moment. We have
to keep going and the players support each other and come back strong. “It was a strange game, we put a lot in and at the moment the goalkeeper is always man of the match against us week in week out and we have to get over this period. “Subconsciously the disappointment of Tuesday night has played a part in the game. You could see something has gone, not in our effort, not in our attitude but confidence-wise. “I feel the pitch was good, the referee was good and the tackles of Paul Scholes were bad.” Sir Alex Ferguson was forced to field a team with seven defenders due to a host of injuries in his United squad. But his team took the lead just before the half hour at Old Trafford through Fabio before Wayne Rooney added a second after half time.

Barcelona hopes to visit quake-hit Japan ‘soon’ Agence France Presse
MADRID – Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has called the massive quake and tsunami in Japan that left at least 1,000 dead “a tradegy” and said he hopes the Spanish champions will be able to visit the country again “soon”. Barcelona has visited Japan on several pre-season tours, most re-
cently in 2007 when they faced Yokohama Marino in a friendly match, and the club has two fan clubs in the country as well as a football academy at Fukuoka. “I hope the country can pick itself up and rebuild itself. It has been a tragedy. The pictures speak for themselves, it’s devastating,” Guardiola was quoted by the club’s website as saying.
“I want to send my love to the people of Japan and I’m sure we?ll soon be able to organise an Asian tour and be able to be with them,” he added. Barcelona’s football academy at Fukuoka in southwestern Japan which has some 300 students was not affected by the quake, the club said in a statement. Xevi Marce, the director of the academy, said

ceed 10,000. The quake and tsunami have damaged or closed down key ports. Some airports shut in the immediate aftermath have since reopened, but transport infrastructure has been crippled along parts of the northeastern coast.
Rio Ferdinand ‘not fit’ for Wales qualifier Agence France Presse
LONDON – England captain Rio Ferdinand should not be selected for an upcoming Euro 2012 qualifier with Wales because he has not fully recovered from a calf injury, according to Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. England face Wales on March 26, however Ferguson does not expect United defender Ferdinand — who has been out of action since January — to be fit in time. “Rio has been doing a bit of running. He will be ready for
the game after the internationals,” said Ferguson. “I wouldn’t have thought he would have a chance before that. I don’t think it would be wise for him to be called up by England. He hasn’t played for us since January.” It leaves England manager Fabio Capello with a dilemma concerning who will skipper the Three Lions. Ferdinand’s expected absence, along with that of vicecaptain Steven Gerrard, means C a p e l l o c o u l d o ff e r t h e armband back to former skipper John Terry.

DALLAS – Kobe Bryant shook off an ankle sprain and the Los Angeles Lakers relied on their big men to beat the Dallas Mavericks 96-91 in a showdown of two of the Western Conference’s top teams Saturday. Bryant, who had an off-night shooting, landed awkwardly on his left ankle in the third quarter and left the game. He returned in the fourth quarter and hit a fadeaway jumper and two free throws to finish with 16 points as the Lakers (47-20) moved to within a halfgame of the Mavericks in the West. “I thought I was done, like done,” Bryant told reporters. “I was just praying that when I stood up, my foot was lined up straight. I thought I dislocated it. “Even though it looks horrible, I can still push off on it,” said Bryant, who made only six of 20 shots. “We’ll just have to watch it the next few days,” Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. Center Andrew Bynum muscled his way for 22 points and 15 rebounds to help the Lakers win for the ninth time in 10 games. “We knew that Drew (Bynum) was going to be effective tonight,” Jackson told reporters after his 600th win with
Los Angeles. “They have a big lineup, but he has shown before that he’s a very effective player against the combination of what they put out there on the floor.” Jackson said the team decided before the game to make a determined effort to take the ball inside. ELITE GROUP

Dallas, which won this season’s first meeting with Los Angeles, got within two on Marion’s dunk with 24.9 seconds remaining but the Lakers scored the next five points to seal the victory. Earlier, in the second quarter, the Mavericks had leveled the score only to see Bryant score six consecutive points to lead a 9-0 run. “Every time we were right there, we just never got to the hump,” Mavericks Coach Rick Carlisle said. “It was a tough loss because the game obviously had meaning.” The Mavericks now trail the conference-leading San Antonio Spurs by seven games with the Lakers closing fast.
INDIAN WELLS, California – Top ranked Rafael Nadal and Caroline Wozniacki eased through their Indian Wells openers on Saturday, but Australian Open runnerup Andy Murray bit the dust in the Californian desert. Nadal defeated South African Rik de Voest 6-0, 62 while Wozniacki rolled over American wildcard Sloane Stephens 6-3, 6-2 at the Indian Wells WTA and ATP Masters 1000 event. Nadal, who helped Spain win its Davis Cup first round tie against Belgium last week, now has two career wins over de Voest but it’s been eight years between matches. The Spaniard won their only previous meeting in 2003 at a Challenger event in France when he was just 16. “I am better player now. The worst thing is I am eight years older,” said the top seed Nadal, who had a bye in the first round. He will next tackle Ryan Sweeting who beat Argentine 27th seed Juan Monaco 6-1, 0-6, 6-1. Wozniacki also had little trouble, dispatching Stephens with a steady serve and precision forehand to win in just 68 minutes, wrapping up victory with a running forehand volley. American qualifier Donald Young shocked world number five Murray 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 with the Scotsman looking rusty in his first career meeting against his 21-year-old opponent. “I started the match well but then when it got close I didn’t do
anything to lift myself,” said Murray. “The crowd was for him and then he started to play better and I didn’t play my way back into the match.” It marked the first victory over a top-10 opponent for Young. “I am still thinking about it,” he said. “I’ve been in this position a couple of times with a few players and had not won the match. “I just told myself this time I was going to see it through and not let the nerves get the best of me.” Spain’s sixth seed David Ferrer was also sent crashing, falling in the second-round to unseeded Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (7/3), 6-3. The 32-year-old Croatian, who last week set a new world record with a 251kmh serve in his country’s Davis Cup tie against Germany, hammered nine aces against Ferrer who had already won titles this year in Auckland and Acapulco. Karlovic closed out the 96-minute match with an ace to post his first win over Ferrer in three career meetings. In the women’s draw, seventh seeded Li Na of China lost to countrywoman Peng Shuai 4-6, 63, 6-3 while former US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova was beaten by American wildcard Christina McHale 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (9/ 7). Martin retains Paris-Nice lead Agence France Presse
BIOT, France – Germany’s Tony Martin retained the lead in the Paris-Nice after Saturday’s stormy seventh stage was won by French rider Remy Di Gregorio. This first major-stage race of the season is known as the Race to the ‘Sun’ but there was little of that in evidence as strong winds and rain made life difficult for the peloton during the 215.5km ride. One man singing in the rain was Marseille-born Di Gregorio, who made his winning move 13km from the finish to edge home a chasing group headed by Spain’s Olympic champion Samuel
Sanchez. This was only the 25-year-old Astana team member’s second career stage win after picking up a stage on the 2006 Tour de l’Avenir. The home rider said: “I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time. I almost fell (2km from the finish), but you have to take risks to win. Behind this success was a lot of work.” Saturday’s stage, the longest of the race, was marked by a clutch of falls as the slippery surface took its toll and there were a number of key retirements, including Frank Schleck, suffering from a stomach problem, Ireland’s Nicolas Roche and Slovak rider Peter Sagan, who
was regarded as a potential winner of the race. Martin, who came in fifth, reflected on what he described as “a very difficult day”. “The most important thing was to avoid the fallers...even taking a bend slowly you could end up on the deck. I’m happy to have made it to the finish intact.” He added: “I’m in great condition and I expect I’ll be under more attack tomorrow, but I’m worried about the state of the roads if it keeps on raining, once again we’ll have to be careful of accidents.” HTC-Highroad rider Martin moved to the top of the overall standings after winning Friday’s sixth stage time trial.

LAS VEGAS – Ricardo Mayorga wanted to brawl all night long. Miguel Cotto saved his big punching for the final round. Cotto fought with discipline for 11 rounds before unleashing a vicious left hook in the 12th round Saturday night that put an exclamation point on his successful defense of his 154-pound title against the wild-swinging Mayorga.

Hopkins hopes for Suzuki race chance JOHN Hopkins hopes he can earn a chance to race for Suzuki in MotoGP again after rejoining the team for some filming work in Qatar today. The American raced for Suzuki’s factory MotoGP team from 2003 to 2007, and will be riding for the Crescent Suzuki squad in British Superbikes this season. With Suzuki having cut back to just a single MotoGP entry for
Alvaro Bautista this year, Hopkins has been lined-up as a standby in case the Spaniard is injured. Although he will not be testing with the team in the official Qatar sessions on Sunday and Monday, he rode the GSV-R for promotional purposes at the track today. “It’s really good to have been given this opportunity and it’s just been great to be here,” said Hopkins. “It feels really cool to be back out
and riding on a GP bike, even if it was just for filming it was still a lot of fun. “I did start to get a decent feeling on the bike and it still feels awesome, even with the minimal amount of laps we were doing.” Hopkins left Suzuki for Kawasaki in 2008, but was left high and dry when the Japanese firm then withdrew from MotoGP before 2009. He subsequently raced in World and AMA Superbikes, though he was hampered by injuries. The 27-year-old is now trying to rebuild his career after surgery finally cured a long-standing wrist problem last year, and hopes to use British Superbikes as a springboard back to the top level. “It would be great to race the Suzuki in a MotoGP event, so hopefully I can have some success in BSB and get the chance to go for it in a grand prix again sometime in the future,” said Hopkins. “My ultimate goal is to get back to MotoGP, but for now my full focus is on doing the best I can in the British Superbike championship with the Samsung Crescent team.”
The hook dropped Mayorga to the canvas and he quit a few seconds later, ending an entertaining bout between two boxers trying to resurrect their careers. “It was a really good fight with an amazing finish,” Cotto said. Cotto was ahead by five points on all three ringside scorecards entering the final round and seemingly headed to a win by decision. But he caught Mayorga in an exchange early in the round and, though Mayorga got up, he told referee Robert Byrd when action resumed that he couldn’t go on. Mayorga said it wasn’t the effects of the left hook that made him quit, but an injury to his thumb during the exchange. “I hate the way this fight ended,” Mayorga said. “I tried to finish the final round but the pain in my hand was too much.” Cotto made Mayorga fight on his terms much of the night, frustrating the Nicaraguan and piling up points. The fight had plenty of action, but Cotto landed the cleaner and more effective punches as he stuck to his boxing style despite Mayorga begging him to brawl on several occasions. Cotto, continuing to rebound from a beating at the hands of Manny Pacquiao, improved his record in title fights to 17-2 in the first defense of the title he won from Yuri Foreman last June. “The game plan was not to get caught
up in any of his antics,” Cotto said. “He was very heavy handed, I felt his punches the whole fight.” Cotto was a big favorite to retain the title, but Mayorga fought a competitive fight and landed well in flurries to the head. He took more punches than he gave out, though, with Cotto outscoring him 249-176 in total punches scored at ringside. Before the final round, Cotto’s trainer, Emanuel Steward, told his fighter to make sure he kept going forward and that he could stop a tiring Mayorga. He did just that, though Cotto only had to remain on his feet in the final round to win. “I told myself, keep calm and be myself,” Cotto said. “He has very strong hands and punches that hurt.” Cotto, who made $1 million, improved to 36-2 with 29 knockouts. Mayorga, who has now lost five of his last nine fights and may be at the end of his career at the age of 37, fell to 29-8-1. In another fight, Foreman returned to the ring for the first time since losing to Cotto but made it through only six rounds against Pawel Wolak. Foreman lost all six rounds on the ringside scorecards and had taken a beating in the previous two rounds when his corner called an end to the fight after the sixth round. “I just didn’t feel it tonight,” said Foreman, a rabbi-intraining. “There were no surprises, but I just didn’t have it.”
