LOS ANGELES - Justin Timberlake snagged the No.1 Spot on the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart with “Man of the Woods,” despite harsh reviews and a Super Bowl halftime show that was deemed underwhelming on social media and by music critics. “Man of the Woods,” Timberlake’s first studio album since 2013, sold more than 242,000 units in its first week of release, according to Nielsen Music data released on Monday. The Billboard 200 chart tallies units from album sales, song sales (10 songs equal one album) and streaming activity (1,500 streams equal one album). “Man of the Woods” marks Timberlake’s fourth Billboard No.1 album and was the biggest-selling album in the U.S. since Taylor Swift’s “Reputation” in December 2017, Billboard said. It debuted at No.1 after a Feb. 4 Super Bowl performance consisting mostly of Timberlake’s old hits that also featured a controversial segment featuring a huge projection of Prince, who died in 2016. The former NSYNC singer also took heat on social media for failing to mention, or perform with, Janet Jackson after
an infamous 2004 Super Bowl appearance which ended with Timberlake ripping off Jackson’s top and accidentally briefly exposing her breast. Nevertheless, the Super Bowl and halftime show were watched by some 103 million Americans on television. Nielsen Music reported last week that on-demand audio and video streams for all of the songs performed by Timberlake jumped 45 percent on the day after the game, compared to the day before. Timberlake, best known for pop tracks like “SexyBack” and “Rock Your Body,” promoted “Man of the Woods” as a country-inspired album that took him back to his Memphis roots. But the album had few fans among music reviewers. Esquire called it “disappointing” and “kind of embarrassing,” while USA Today said the album “can’t pull off its Americana-pop fusion.” (rtr)

LOS ANGELES - Some film critics are calling it the best Marvel movie so far; others say it’s a correction after years of neglecting minority talent in Hollywood. The predominantly black cast of superhero movie “Black Panther” hope its combination of African pride, beauty and kick-ass adventure will also mark a cultural shift in the movie industry and beyond. The Disney movie, opening worldwide this week, tells the story of T’Challa/Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), the new king of the futuristic, wealth-laden African nation Wakanda, who is challenged by factions within his own country. “Marvel has a way of really affecting popular culture,” said Lupita Nyong’o, who plays the
Wakandan warrior spy, Nakia. “Hopefully it changes the general idea of what being an African is. Too often times we see Africa as a place that is wanting, and here it’s a place that you want to go,” she said. The movie, directed by Ryan Coogler and also featuring Michael B. Jordan, Angela Bassett, Forest Whittaker and Daniel Kaluuya, arrives to stellar reviews after years of criticism about the under-representation of movies, actors and filmmakers of color in Hollywood. Analysts expect it to rake in some $150 million at the North American box office on its opening weekend, and the filmmakers hope it will encourage studios to invest in more mainstream, racially
diverse films. “It’s not often that you see two black men in a movie playing a role of this importance. You see it with white actors, (like) ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ where it’s Brad Pitt and Matt Damon and George Clooney, and it’s like ‘why does that never happen with us?’” Boseman said. “Hopefully the success of this will make it be commonplace. It’ll make Hollywood stop saying ‘well, your movies don’t travel,” he said. “Black Panther” also offers a new type of villain through Jordan’s Killmonger, an empathetic former military black-ops agent, who wants to distribute Wakanda’s wealth to arm the world’s black population and help them rise to power. ANC decides to remove Zuma as South African President
JOHANNESBURG - The ANC has decided to sack Jacob Zuma as President of South Africa, a senior official said on Tuesday, after a marathon meeting to determine the fate of a leader whose scandal-plagued years in power darkened and divided Nelson Mandela’s ‘Rainbow Nation’. The decision by the ruling party’s national executive came in the early hours of the morning, after 13 hours of tense deliberations and one face-to-face meeting between Zuma and his presumed successor, deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa. Zuma has been living on borrowed time since Ramaphosa, a union leader once tipped as Mandela’s pick to take over the reins, was elected as head of the 106-year-old ANC in December, narrowly defeating Zuma’s ex-wife, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

Bali predicted to lack qualified labor in 2030 YOGYAKARTA - Based on the results of a survey conducted by the Bank Indonesia (BI), Bali is predicted to have a shortage of qualified labour by 2025 and into 2030 when there will is likely to be the some 47, 736 operators, supervisors and mangers lacking in Bali. If Bali;s own labour pool cannot fill these positions, then people from outside Bali will have to fill them. Analyst from the Bank Indonesia’s Bali Representative Office, Umran Usman, explained that the prediction is based on the economic growth of Bali in conjunction with the education of potential workers. “This way we can predict
what jobs will be available in Bali and how many people in Bali will be able to fill these positions” said Usman during a workshop held by the Bali representative Office of the Bank of Indonesia on Friday (Feb. 9). By assuming that the population of Bali will have reached 4 million with 77.5 percent of these people making up the workforce, it is predicted that there will be a lack of local workforce particularly at the level of operators. It is predicted that Bali will lack from 16, 938 operators in 2025 and 25, 780 in 2030. There si also predicted to be a shortage of 13, 621 supervisors in 2025 and 21, 125 lacking in 2030. At the managerial level, there is predicted to be some 537 people lacking in 2025 and 831 managers lacking in 2030.

This will certain cause Bali to have to accept migrants from outside Bali”, he said. One of the main obstacles said Usman is that the training material used by the Vocational Training Center (BLK) and formal education institutions are not up to date with industry needs.. “The material has not changed but the industry has seen massive changes including things like online bookings”, siad Usman. Having educational out of date material will cause greater and greater shortages of qualified workers. According to Usman massive changes need to be made immediately. The government for example should take steps towards improving BKLs and other vocational education institutions. Bali is facing serious challenges in terms of human resources. The Bank of Indonesia’s survey also showed that tourism industry business owners consider Balinese workers to be of lower quality than workers from outside Bali particularly at the managerial level. Quality issues range from productivity, creativity, discipline to communication skills. Most international brand hotels for example fill their leadership positions with people form outside Bali. Balinese workers only excel in terms of responsibility and honesty. It is also more difficult for people from Bali to migrate to other regions due to mobility costs, socio-cultural factors as well as issues related to psychological impact. The cost of labour migration for people from Bali and Nusa Tenggara is higher than for people from other regions. In fact it is estimated to be IDR 14.95 million more for them to migrate. As a result there are far fewer people from Bali and Nusa Teggara who migrate to other regions to work compared to people form other parts of Indonesia. “Thus, we see the tendency for people from outside Bali to seek work in Bali not Balinese people looking for work elsewhere. Alert status of Mount Agung lowered
Damaged road prevents evacuees from going home SEMARAPURA - The alert status of Mount Agung was lowered from warning to watch on Saturday (Feb. 10) and the radius of the danger zone was reduced from 6km to 4 km. Nevertheless, thousands of evacuees in the district of Klungkung have not made a move to return home yet. They are waiting for official information and residents of Bukit Galah, Sogra Hamlet and Sebudi, Selat are concerned about the road to their villages having been cut off by lava flows. As seen in Swecapura Stadium, Gelgel village, on Sunday (Feb. 11), very few evacuees had returned home. The few families that did leave had their belong-
ings taken home by truck. “We heard that the we are allowed to go home, that the alert status has been lowered”, said Wayang Sriana from Sebudi, Selat. Although news of the lowered alert status was welcomed with relief by many, many others are still haunted by anxiety as Sebudi is located quite close to the highest mountain in Bali. Sriana and his family obviously hope that conditions will be back to normal soon. “Although I still have some doubts, many people have gone home, so we joined them”, he said. Nyoman Jawi, an evacuee from Bukit Galah, Sogra, Sebudi, said that he is eager to go home but that he cannot do so immediately
as lava flows from the last eruption have cut off the road access to his village. There is no other way to reach his village. “Our village has been cut off, so we cannot go home yet”, he said. Dozens of families are in the same boat as Jawi. The government is expected to open the road again as it is the only way that people could evacuate should there be another eruption. “If we were to go home now, and there was another eruption, we would not be able to evacuate very quickly as no vehicles can pass through the only road out of our village”, he explained. Chief Executive of the Klungkung Regional Disaster Manage-
ment Agency (BPBD), Putu Widiada, said that only about a dozen or so people have left evacuation posts in Klungkung. There are still roughly 3,000 evacuees spread across some 30 villages who are waiting for further information from the Pasubayan. “We do not have exact data year, but there are still thousands of evacuees here”, said Widiada. According to official information, all evacuees here are allowed to go home as their villages are all located outside ot the 4 km radius of the danger zone. However any evacuees who want to stay here a few more days, the Government of Klungkung will coordinate matters with the gov-
ernment of Karangasem. “There are no residences within the 4 km radius, so all evacuees can go home and as a consequence the government of Klungkung is no longer able to provide assistance for the evacuees. If there are still evacuees here we will immediately coordinate with Karangasem”, he said. Klungkung’ s district government will provide three buses and trucks for the evacuees to return home. Widiada is still waiting for instructions form the regent regarding the remaining food stocks. “We have already asked the regent for directions and are waiting to hear back”, he concluded. (kmb45)

Amazon paid $90 million for camera maker’s chip technology

Smartphones boost Latin American farmers in fight against climate change ROME - Armed with smartphones, thousands of smallholder farmers across Latin America are set to benefit from a technology boost that will help them deal better with the effects of climate change.
A three-year agreement will see farmers receive vital information such as weather forecasts and early warnings via their smartphones, as well as online training and equipment to help improve water usage. “There are 70 countries in the world today that have no access to weather information,” said José Graziano da Silva, director general of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). He was speaking after signing the agreement on Monday with Spain’s Telefónica SA, one of the world’s largest telecommunications companies. “They don’t know if it’s going to rain other than by looking out of the window,” he said, adding that the deal would help to reduce the divide between rural and urban areas on access to information and new technology. “We believe that there is an urgent need to use the data and information available globally and translate it into useful and accessible information locally, useful to small-scale producers,” he said.
A pilot project will help farmers in El Salvador and Colombia maximise their water resources. It is similar to an existing project of Telefónica’s in Chile, which has struggled with a multi-year drought. The project in Chile covers 17,000 hectares and ten crops in four regions, and uses specialised equipment whose sensors measure humidity and solar activity, among others, and send data via a low-cost wireless network. FAO said the project would be replicated in areas of Central America’s “Dry Corridor” which runs through Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. Home to about 10.5 million people, experts say it is vulnerable to extreme weather exacerbated by climate change. Once the data is processed, farmers get recommendations specific to their crops on their smartphones, leading to a 20 percent reduction in water usage, said Vicente Muñoz, Telefónica’s chief officer on the Internet of Things (IoT). “So we have the experience, the knowledge, and the distribution for this collaboration with FAO,” Muñoz told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. IoT refers to devices such as mobile phones, computers, cars and refrigerators that are connected to the internet. (rtr)
SAN FRANCISCO - Amazon. com Inc paid about $90 million to acquire the maker of Blink home security cameras late last year, in a secret bet on the startup’s energyefficient chips, people familiar with the matter told Reuters. The deal’s rationale and price tag, previously unreported, underscore how Amazon aims to do more than sell another popular camera, as analysts had thought. The online retailer is exploring chips exclusive to Blink that could lower production costs and lengthen the battery life of other gadgets, starting with Amazon’s Cloud Cam and potentially extending to its family of Echo speakers, one of the people said. Amazon views its in-house devices as key to deepening its relationship with shoppers. The Cloud Cam and Echo currently need a plug-in power source to operate. Blink, which says its cameras can last two years on a single pair of AA lithium batteries, could change that. Amazon declined to comment on the acquisition’s terms or strategy. The deal so far has drawn little attention. The camera maker announced its takeover by Amazon with scant details in a Dec. 21 blog post. Analysts have viewed Blink as part of the retailer’s strategy for Amazon Key, a new program where shoppers can set up a smart lock and surveillance camera so delivery personnel can slip packages inside their homes when they are away. Amazon also sees opportunity in the security camera market as smart-home technology expands. But Blink was not merely a camera business. Its little-known
owner, Immedia Semiconductor, was started in Massachusetts by old hands from the chip industry. Chief Executive Peter Besen and two of his co-founders came from Sand Video, which had designed chips in the early 2000s that decoded a new and improved video standard. In 2004 they sold Sand Video to Broadcom Ltd and remained there as executives, according to an Immedia website. The group left in 2008 to create Immedia, aiming to design chips for video conferencing, and later targeting laptop makers as potential customers. Dan Grunberg, a co-founder who left Immedia in 2016, said that plan fell through. Laptop makers were unwilling to pay $1 per chip when cheaper options were on the market. So Immedia pivoted. “If we make our own camera, we don’t have to sell a hundred million” chips, he said. Grunberg declined to discuss Immedia’s sale to Amazon. The Blink security camera, which hit the market in 2016, did not require a power cable like many rival products, making it easier to place around users’ properties. It was cheaper, too, starting at $99. Amazon’s wired Cloud Cam launched at $119.99, while Netgear Inc’s wire-free Arlo cost more still. Netgear said last week it plans to spin off its Arlo business. “Battery life is a big issue in connected devices,” said Scott Jacobson, a former Amazon devices manager and now managing director of Madrona Venture Group. “Always-on cameras that last for months and don’t require a wired connection or an electrician to install could be game-changing.” (rtr)

Entering 2018, commercial property rebounds
DENPASAR — Based on the results of survey made by Bank Indonesia (BI), when entering 2018, commercial property rebounded. The eruption of Mount Agung disaster is considered to have no longer impact on tourism activities in the first quarter of 2018 and hotel demand from foreign and domestic tourists will improve again. Chief of Representative Office of Bank Indonesia for Bali Region, Causa Iman Karana, explained that in addition to hotel properties, the other type of property such as retails and shopping centers featuring the concept of lifestyle is still experiencing a positive trend. The biggest demand is from F & B tenants, supermarkets and cinema. Despite the positive trend, in the first quarter of 2018, Iman predicted the property of retail segment will not increase. So far, there is no plan to build a new commercial center functioned as a shopping center with the concept of mall. Commercial properties consist of offices, retail, apartments, star-rated hotels and industrial land. The rebound of commercial property can be seen from the condition in the third quarter and fourth quarter of 2017. The basic rental price of the office space and rental price of apartment service remains stable. Meanwhile, the retail price of shopping centers and hotel rooms tends to go down in line with the quiet visitors and tourists due to eruption of Mount Agung. The occupancy rate of commercial property stays low in the range of 59.15 percent to 85.40 percent during the period.
The cumulative supply of hotels in the fourth quarter of 2017 reached 15,420 and the third quarter reached 14,285. In the meantime, the cumulative demand in the fourth quarter of 2017 reached 8,418 and 10,303 in the third quarter of 2017. There are new (room) supplies in the fourth quarter being equal to 1,135 and 495 in the third quarter of 2017. Meanwhile, the hotel occupancy rate reached 54.59 percent in the fourth quarter and 72.12 percent in the third quarter of 2017. Retail segment properties get quite high demand. Cumulative demand in the fourth quarter of 2017 reached 202.402 square meters and 203,164 square meters in the third quarter of 2017. Meanwhile, the existing supply amounts to 237,009 per square meter in the third quarter and fourth quarter of 2017. The occupancy rate of retail market is quite large, namely 85.40 percent in the fourth quarter of 2017, out of a total supply of 237,009 square meters from 11 shopping centers. The occupancy rate slightly decreased as the impact of Mount Agung eruption resulting in significant drop in visitor traffic. The average decrease in the occupancy rate of retail property reached 0.32 percent from 85.72 percent in the third quarter of 2017 to 85.40 percent in the fourth quarter of 2017. The amount of free space reached 34,607 square meters. The basic rental price of the retail market was IDR 634,172 per square meter per month in the third quarter of 2017, higher than in the fourth quarter of 2017 at IDR 630,274. (kmb42)

Currently, the government has officially decreased the alert status of Mount Agung from level IV (warning) to level III (watch). Upon the decision, tourism players hoped this situation can restore the development of tourism industry in this region. This was expressed by Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Buleleng, Dewa Ketut Suardipa, when met in Singaraja on Monday (Feb. 12). Further, Suardipa said the decrease in the alert status of Mount Agung is a good opportunity to organize tourism business after long affected by the Mount Agung eruption. As an effort to boost tourism, local government is asked to increase tourism promotion in the region. AMLAPURA - The decline of Mount Agung’s alert status to watch has not entirely relieved the residents of Bukit Galah hamlet, Sebudi, Selat, although the hamlet is located outside the radius of 4 kilometers. Local residents still have to survive in the evacuation camp because this time their village is still isolated due to broken off road access. Bukit Galah residents previously occupied the evacuation post at Swecapura Stadium, Klungkung. Considering the hamlet under the Pasar Agung Temple is not yet safe to be occupied, the residents are temporarily shifted to Tegeh hamlet, Amerta Bhuana, Selat. “In total, there are 34 families or 135 people. They arrived from Swecapura around 15:00 local time by bus,” said Chief Executive of the Karangasem Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), I.B. Ketut Arimbawa, on Monday (Feb. 12). The evacuees have been prepared with a place in hamlet meeting hall. If not sufficient, the Quick Response Team (TRC) of BPBD with PMI and Pasubaya volunteers will set up emergency tents. As long as the broken point has not been fixed, Bukit Galah hamlet is not feasible to be inhabited because there is no road that can be functioned as an evacuation route. In addition to Bukit Galah in Selat, residents of Pucang hamlet at Ban village, Kubu, should also still settle in the evacuation because their hamlet is located in the radius of 4 km. However, according to headman of Ban, all Pucang residents have returned to their village. They will shift again if the activities of Mount Agung increase. “All the people of Ban
have gone home except for seven families of Belong remaining to evacuate at Siatin, Bangli as hampered by transportation constraints,” he explained. Potag said that currently the condition of his village is destroyed. Many public facilities, especially the road infrastructure, are heavily damaged by the cold lava flood. Belatung Market at Dlungdungan hamlet cannot be functioned as being submerged by mud. So far, there is no certainty when the infrastructure damage will be addressed, including the road infrastructure to Bukit Galah hamlet. Tirta Sudamala Temple is located in Sedit hamlet, Bebalang, Bangli. This temple is already well known by Balinese people who often visit the temple om the full moon, the new moon as well as major holidays such as Banyupinaruh. There are twelve water spouts that are used by worshippers to purify themselves with the temple water. Tirta Sudamala Temple is close to the center of Bangli, and is easy to access. Since the temple is located in the bank of the Sangsang river, worshippers visiting the temple will often descend numerous staits to pruify themselves in Tirta Sudamala as well. Hamlet chief of Sedit, Gusti Putu Kariyadnya, recently gave a brief explanation of the origins ot Tirta Sudamala Temple. An old inscription says that the establishment of the temple is related to the pilgrimage of Ida Pedanda Hender who, upon the request of the king of Bangli, went looking for a holy spring to take water from for a grandioase ceremony that was to take place. Ida Pedanda Hender started his pilgrimage from the south and sat in a plcae overgrown by many sambng
plants to meditate about where he should go to find the stpring. During his meditation, a huge pig appeared. The pig proceeded to loosen the soil and formed a mound resembling a hill, in an attempt to distract Ida Pedanda Hender from his meditation. One of Ida Pendanda Hender’s companions however saw what the pig was doing and shooed the pig away. Because the mound abandoned by the huge pig resembled a hill, Ida Pedanda Hender then named the location Buung Hill. In his meditation Ida Pedanda Hender however did manage to find the location of the spring that he was looking for. He then resumed his pilgrimage northwards until he reached the location of the Sudamala spring. After Ida Pedanda Hender’s visit to the spring, the local
people built a small shrine at the spring. The shrine was built near the current Tirta Sudamala water spouts. “Our senior figures once made a vow that Tirta Sudamala woould be able to repel pests attacking their crops, if they set up a temple near the location of Tirta Sudamala” explained hamlet chief Kariadnya. In fact, thanks to the Tirta Sudamala, the local community finally managed to keep the monkeys from invading their paddy fields. As promised, the community then established a temple called Tirta Sudamala Temple. Until now, Tirta Sudamala Temple is supported by the community of Sedit hamle. Temple celebrations for for Tirta Sudamala are normally held every six months (210 days) on Anggarkasih Prangbakat. (kmb)

It is carried out by holding otonan ceremony on the Tumpek Krulut falling on Saniscara (Saturday) Kliwon Krulut (22/10). It is conducted every six months or 210 days. People who have gamelan, the artists and gamelan art troupes are required to implement this ceremony. Dr. I Gede Arya Sugiarta, Rector of the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar, said that providing ritual for gamelan instrument was mentioned in the Prakempa palm-leaf manuscript on Balinese gamelan. It was mentioned there were four good ways to play Balinese gamelan namely the logic or philosophy, ethics, aesthetics and techniques to play gamelan. In the ethics was then mentioned about the otonan for gamelan. To make the gamelan instrument well maintained psychically, it could be done with ritual on Tumpek Krulut. If people would like to learn gamelan, they should perform the ceremony on Tumpek Krulut. “Tradition of holding ritual for gamelan on Tumpek Krulut is indeed a new tradition because we just realized it,” he said. In the manuscript was mentioned that gamelan ritual was dedicated to God in his manifestation as the god of the arts. After the ceremony, it was expected that all gamelan musicians could play together. “It is based on the belief that after saying prayers people play gamelan together. In essence, it is building a sense of togetherness,” he said. According to Dr. Arya Sugiarta, the tradition of providing ritual for gamelan began around the 1990s when the Dance Academy of Indonesia (former name of the ISI) learned about the Prakempa manuscript well. “Through our faculty and students, we try to disseminate the information, so that it has now become a tradition,” he added. The manuscript also mentioned that people were not allowed to overstep the gamelan as an effort to take care of the gamelan well. In addition to offering some oblations, it should also be followed with good behavior. Essentially, it was the way how to respect to Balinese gamelan accordingly. “If it has been respected and cared for, it will automatically generate the taksu or divine vibration,” he added. Prakempa manuscript, said Dr. Arya Sugiarta, mentioned the ethics in playing the gamelan such as related to people’s posture. Gamelan should not be overstepped because the respected goods might not be overstepped. For example, Balinese drums might not be overstepped, but played on thighs in cross-legged position. “Having been respected in such a way, the taksu would appear by itself,” he said. (kmb)

WELLINGTON - Tonga’s neighbours scrambled to deliver emergency relief on Tuesday after Cyclone Gita tore across the Pacific island nation in the middle of the night, flattening the parliament, tearing roofs off homes and causing widespread flooding.
There were no confirmed reports of deaths from the Category 4 storm that bought winds of around 200 km (125 miles) per hour, but there were a lot of injured people, some seriously, said Graham Kenna, an Australian government adviser at Tonga’s National Emergency Management Office. Photos posted on social media showed a wrecked Parliament House building in the capital, as well as extensive flooding and downed power lines. Australia is donating A$350,000 ($275,000) worth of emergency shelter, kitchen and hygiene kits, while the country’s foreign minister said the Australian Defence Force personnel would assist with clean-up efforts. Indonesia church attacker may have been exposed to radicalism - police chief JAKARTA - A sword-wielding attacker who injured at least three churchgoers and a police officer in Indonesia’s Yogyakarta city at the weekend had attempted to travel to Syria and had showed signs of being radicalised, the national police chief said on Monday. The attack comes amid heightened concerns over religious tension in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, which has also seen a recent resurgence in homegrown militancy. “There is a strong and concerning indication that he was exposed to radicalism. Indonesia is predominantly Muslim but has sizeable minorities of Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and members of other traditional faith groups. The church attacker, believed to be a university student, injured at least four people, including a German-born priest and the police official who eventually detained him. Video footage verified by police showed the church attacker brandishing a long sword, shouting, and lunging at worshippers. Wow, it`s a serious title. That`s a burden for me,” she exclaimed from the presidential palace compound while commenting on the award. She explained that the World Government Summit had asked independent consultant Ernst & Young to evaluate ministers in the world who deserved an award as the best minister. The criteria, method and selection of nominees were fully determined by Ernst & Young. After searching through various sources, they finally shortlisted eight nominees and “then they received feedback from across the world, including from private parties,
mass media, social media and investors, who then determined who would be the best minister,” she said. Minister Mulyani thanked President Joko Widodo for having given her the opportunity to perform optimally. “The leadership of the President and his reform effort have given us the opportunity to focus on fundamental issues, and that is what is being seen,” she noted. Mulyani said that the award was actually the result of joint reform efforts. “My name merely happened to emerge. Certainly, it gave pride to all personnel of the ministry of finance,” she added. She hoped the award would further motivate the personnel of the finance ministry to make the national budget better and state finance more efficient and effective for the people. President Joko Widodo also congratulated Mulyani for receiving the award during the cabinet meeting. Death of maid treated ‘like a dog’ casts spotlight on migrant abuse in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR - An Indonesian maid forced to sleep outside next to a dog has died after suspected abuse by her employer in Malaysia, sparking calls from activists to end poor treatment of migrant workers. The 21-year-old woman died in a hospital on Sunday, a day after she was rescued from her employer’s home in the northern state of Penang, according to state media. A 36-year-old woman and her brother are under investigation for suspected murder, police told the state news agency Bernama.
The couple were not named as no charges have been filed. Campaigners said the death of the maid, who had worked in Malaysia for two years, highlighted a lack of protection for migrant workers in the country amid reports of widespread abuse. Hundreds of thousands of women – mainly from Indonesia, the Philippines and Myanmar – work in homes throughout Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur-based rights group Tenaganita said the case is “symptomatic of a widespread and deep-seated malaise”. “These
cases are not isolated in nature,” Tenaganita’s Executive Director Glorene Das said in a statement on Monday. The woman was rescued from her employer’s home after someone reported her situation to the office of a local parliamentarian. “We arrived at the house and found her sitting at the porch,” Por Cheng Han, staff member for lawmaker Steven Sim, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone from Penang. “There were wounds on her hands and her face covered in bruises.” The woman had been forced to
sleep in a covered car parking area attached to the house next to a dog, according to Por. “She was so terrified and couldn’t speak a word, she just shook her head,” added Por, who lodged a report with police. Officers rescued the maid and took her to hospital. But police said the woman died the next day due to multiple severe injuries, according to Bernama news agency. Malaysia has introduced regulations to protect domestic workers in recent years after a series of highly-publicised abuse cases, including the 2014 conviction of
a couple who were found guilty of starving an Indonesian maid to death. The regulations include a minimum wage and mandate one day off each week, but rights groups say enforcement is rare. Reports of abuses remain common, including torture of domestic helpers and others among Malaysia’s 2 million migrant workers, many of whom are believed to be victims of trafficking. WELLINGTON - Tonga’s neighbours scrambled to deliver emergency relief on Tuesday after Cyclone Gita tore across the Pacific island nation in the middle of the night, flattening the parliament, tearing roofs off homes and causing widespread flooding.
There were no confirmed reports of deaths from the Category 4 storm that bought winds of around 200 km (125 miles) per hour, but there were a lot of injured people, some seriously, said Graham Kenna, an Australian government adviser at Tonga’s National Emergency Management Office. Photos posted on social media showed a wrecked Parliament House building in the capital, as well as extensive flooding and downed power lines. Access to areas outside the capital were hindered by the storm damage and debris. “The full extent of damage caused by Cyclone Gita is still being assessed but there is an immediate need for assistance on the ground,” NZ Foreign Affairs

The cyclone was heading towards Fiji’s southern islands on Tuesday, with some forecasts reporting it intensifying towards a Category 5 storm. Wow, it`s a serious title. That`s a burden for me,” she exclaimed from the presidential palace compound while commenting on the award. She explained that the World Government Summit had asked independent consultant Ernst & Young to evaluate ministers in the world who deserved an award as the best minister. The criteria, method and selection of nominees were fully determined by Ernst & Young. After searching through various sources, they finally shortlisted eight nominees and “then they received feedback from across the world, including from private parties,
mass media, social media and investors, who then determined who would be the best minister,” she said. Minister Mulyani thanked President Joko Widodo for having given her the opportunity to perform optimally. “The leadership of the President and his reform effort have given us the opportunity to focus on fundamental issues, and that is what is being seen,” she noted. Death of maid treated ‘like a dog’ casts spotlight on migrant abuse in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR - An Indonesian maid forced to sleep outside next to a dog has died after suspected abuse by her employer in Malaysia, sparking calls from activists to end poor treatment of migrant workers. The 21-year-old woman died in a hospital on Sunday, a day after she was rescued from her employer’s home in the northern state of Penang, according to state media. A 36-year-old woman and her brother are under investigation for suspected murder, police told the state news agency Bernama.
The couple were not named as no charges have been filed. Campaigners said the death of the maid, who had worked in Malaysia for two years, highlighted a lack of protection for migrant workers in the country amid reports of widespread abuse. Hundreds of thousands of women – mainly from Indonesia, the Philippines and Myanmar – work in homes throughout Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur-based rights group Tenaganita said the case is “symptomatic of a widespread and deep-seated malaise”. “These

The woman was rescued from her employer’s home after someone reported her situation to the office of a local parliamentarian. “We arrived at the house and found her sitting at the porch,” Por Cheng Han, staff member for lawmaker Steven Sim, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone from Penang. “There were wounds on her hands and her face covered in bruises.” The woman had been forced to
sleep in a covered car parking area attached to the house next to a dog, according to Por. “She was so terrified and couldn’t speak a word, she just shook her head,” added Por, who lodged a report with police. Officers rescued the maid and took her to hospital. But police said the woman died the next day due to multiple severe injuries, according to Bernama news agency. Malaysia has introduced regulations to protect domestic workers in recent years after a series of highly-publicised abuse cases, including the 2014 conviction of
a couple who were found guilty of starving an Indonesian maid to death. The regulations include a minimum wage and mandate one day off each week, but rights groups say enforcement is rare. Reports of abuses remain common, including torture of domestic helpers and others among Malaysia’s 2 million migrant workers, many of whom are believed to be victims of trafficking. There are twelve water spouts that are used by worshippers to purify themselves with the temple water. Tirta Sudamala Temple is close to the center of Bangli, and is easy to access. Since the temple is located in the bank of the Sangsang river, worshippers visiting the temple will often descend numerous staits to pruify themselves in Tirta Sudamala as well. Hamlet chief of Sedit, Gusti Putu Kariyadnya, recently gave a brief explanation of the origins ot Tirta Sudamala Temple. An old inscription says that the establishment of the temple is related to the pilgrimage of Ida Pedanda Hender who, upon the request of the king of Bangli, went looking for a holy spring to take water from for a grandioase ceremony that was to take place. Ida Pedanda Hender started his pilgrimage from the south and sat in a plcae overgrown by many sambng
plants to meditate about where he should go to find the stpring. During his meditation, a huge pig appeared. The pig proceeded to loosen the soil and formed a mound resembling a hill, in an attempt to distract Ida Pedanda Hender from his meditation. One of Ida Pendanda Hender’s companions however saw what the pig was doing and shooed the pig away. Because the mound abandoned by the huge pig resembled a hill, Ida Pedanda Hender then named the location Buung Hill. In his meditation Ida Pedanda Hender however did manage to find the location of the spring that he was looking for. He then resumed his pilgrimage northwards until he reached the location of the Sudamala spring. After Ida Pedanda Hender’s visit to the spring, the local
people built a small shrine at the spring. The shrine was built near the current Tirta Sudamala water spouts. “Our senior figures once made a vow that Tirta Sudamala woould be able to repel pests attacking their crops, if they set up a temple near the location of Tirta Sudamala” explained hamlet chief Kariadnya. In fact, thanks to the Tirta Sudamala, the local community finally managed to keep the monkeys from invading their paddy fields. As promised, the community then established a temple called Tirta Sudamala Temple. Until now, Tirta Sudamala Temple is supported by the community of Sedit hamle. Temple celebrations for for Tirta Sudamala are normally held every six months (210 days) on Anggarkasih Prangbakat. (kmb)

It is carried out by holding otonan ceremony on the Tumpek Krulut falling on Saniscara (Saturday) Kliwon Krulut (22/10). It is conducted every six months or 210 days. People who have gamelan, the artists and gamelan art troupes are required to implement this ceremony. Dr. I Gede Arya Sugiarta, Rector of the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar, said that providing ritual for gamelan instrument was mentioned in the Prakempa palm-leaf manuscript on Balinese gamelan. It was mentioned there were four good ways to play Balinese gamelan namely the logic or philosophy, ethics, aesthetics and techniques to play gamelan. In the ethics was then mentioned about the otonan for gamelan. To make the gamelan instrument well maintained psychically, it could be done with ritual on Tumpek Krulut. If people would like to learn gamelan, they should perform the ceremony on Tumpek Krulut. “Tradition of holding ritual for gamelan on Tumpek Krulut is indeed a new tradition because we just realized it,” he said. In the manuscript was mentioned that gamelan ritual was dedicated to God in his manifestation as the god of the arts. After the ceremony, it was expected that all gamelan musicians could play together. “It is based on the belief that after saying prayers people play gamelan together. In essence, it is building a sense of togetherness,” he said. According to Dr. Arya Sugiarta, the tradition of providing ritual for gamelan began around the 1990s when the Dance Academy of Indonesia (former name of the ISI) learned about the Prakempa manuscript well. “Through our faculty and students, we try to disseminate the information, so that it has now become a tradition,” he added. The manuscript also mentioned that people were not allowed to overstep the gamelan as an effort to take care of the gamelan well. In addition to offering some oblations, it should also be followed with good behavior. Essentially, it was the way how to respect to Balinese gamelan accordingly. “If it has been respected and cared for, it will automatically generate the taksu or divine vibration,” he added. Prakempa manuscript, said Dr. Arya Sugiarta, mentioned the ethics in playing the gamelan such as related to people’s posture. Gamelan should not be overstepped because the respected goods might not be overstepped. AMLAPURA - The decline of Mount Agung’s alert status to watch has not entirely relieved the residents of Bukit Galah hamlet, Sebudi, Selat, although the hamlet is located outside the radius of 4 kilometers. Local residents still have to survive in the evacuation camp because this time their village is still isolated due to broken off road access. Bukit Galah residents previously occupied the evacuation post at Swecapura Stadium, Klungkung. Considering the hamlet under the Pasar Agung Temple is not yet safe to be occupied, the residents are temporarily shifted to Tegeh hamlet, Amerta Bhuana, Selat. “In total, there are 34 families or 135 people. They arrived from Swecapura around 15:00 local time by bus,” said Chief Executive of the Karangasem Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), I.B. Ketut Arimbawa, on Monday (Feb. 12). The evacuees have been prepared with a place in hamlet meeting hall. If not sufficient, the Quick Response Team (TRC) of BPBD with PMI and Pasubaya volunteers will set up emergency tents. Logistics supplies and other supporting facilities have also been dropped from the Tanah Ampo Headquarters. Headman of Amerta Bhuana, I Wayan Suara Arsana, admitted to recommend Tegeh hamlet because it is the nearest hamlet to Bukit Galah. “Tegeh hamlet also exists
in the radius of 10 km, so it is safe even though in warning alert level,” he said. Headman of Sebudi, Mangku Tinggal, said that Bukit Galah hamlet is indeed in an isolated position. Repatriating residents is very risky because the two entrances to the local hamlet are broken. The broken point is in the Tukad Timus groove in the west of the hamlet and in the Tukad Panti groove in the east side. As long as the broken point has not been fixed, Bukit Galah hamlet is not feasible to be inhabited because there is no road that can be functioned as an evacuation route. In addition to Bukit Galah in Selat, residents of Pucang hamlet at Ban village, Kubu, should also still settle in the evacuation because their hamlet is located in the radius of 4 km. However, according to headman of Ban, all Pucang residents have returned to their village. They will shift again if the activities of Mount Agung increase. “All the people of Ban
have gone home except for seven families of Belong remaining to evacuate at Siatin, Bangli as hampered by transportation constraints,” he explained. Potag said that currently the condition of his village is destroyed. Many public facilities, especially the road infrastructure, are heavily damaged by the cold lava flood. Belatung Market at Dlungdungan hamlet cannot be functioned as being submerged by mud. So far, there is no certainty when the infrastructure damage will be addressed, including the road infrastructure to Bukit Galah hamlet. Regent of Karangasem, IGA Mas Sumatri, said the urgent improvements can take advantage of emergency transitional funds. However, currently the technical team is still doing do mapping for the preparation of mitigation plan. As for large-scale repairs, the district government through relevant agencies has prepared proposals to central government worth IDR 1.5 trillion. (kmb)
Kim Jong Un gave instructions for measures aimed at more inter-Korean engagement after his younger sister Kim Yo Jong led a three-day visit to the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, North Korea’s state media reported on Tuesday. It did not specify what those instructions were. The United States has appeared to endorse deeper post-Olympics engagement between the two Koreas that could lead to talks between Pyongyang and Washington. South’s President Moon Jae-in said on Tuesday the United States is open to talking with North Korea, Moon’s spokesman told a briefing. “The United States sees inter-Korean dialogue in a positive light and has expressed its openness for talks with the North,” Moon told Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis, according to the spokesman. U.S. officials also want tough international sanctions to be ramped up to push North Korea to give up its nuclear programme. That sentiment was repeated by Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Tuesday, who said Moon had agreed it was necessary to keep up maximum pressure on North Korea.
Last year, North Korea conducted dozens of missile launches and its sixth and largest nuclear test in defiance of U.N. resolutions as it pursues its goal of developing a nuclear-armed missile capable of reaching the United States. Japanese officials took pains to stress there was no daylight between Japan, the United States and South Korea on their approach to dealing with North Korea. The United States’ “fundamental policy” aimed at denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula has not changed, said a senior Japanese diplomat in a briefing to lawmakers. “The goal is denuclearisation and the process is dialogue for dialogue, action for action, so if North Korea does not show actions, the United States and Japan will not change their policies,” he said. A senior military official stationed at the border between North and South Korea told Reuters North Korea has lowered the volume of its border propaganda broadcasts since the Olympics’ opening ceremony on Feb. 9. “I still hear it, but it is much less than before,” said the official who is stationed on the southern side of the border and spoke on condition of anonymity. Hong Kong Catholics step up opposition to Vatican deal with Beijing HONG KONG - Catholics in Hong Kong stepped up their opposition to a deal between the Vatican and Beijing on Monday with an all-night prayer vigil and an open letter warning of dire consequences for the faithful in the communist country. More than 200 people crowded into a hall of the St. Bonaventure Church in a residential neighbourhood to show their concern over the deal, which Vatican sources have said could be signed in the next few months. “It’s a precarious situation. There’s a real danger of division,” said one priest at the prayer service who declined to give his name. The Vatican and China have been moving towards an accord on the appointment of bishops in what would be a historic breakthrough and a precursor to a resumption
in diplomatic relations after seven decades of estrangement. But the prospect of a deal has sparked stiff opposition from many in the global church, some of whom say the Vatican would be selling out Catholics who have remained faithful to the pope during years of persecution. The Chinese church is split between the state-backed Catholic Patriotic Association, where bishops are appointed by the government, and an “underground” church whose bishops have been appointed by the pontiff. A three-year agreement will see farmers receive vital information such as weather forecasts and early warnings via their smartphones, as well as online training and equipment to help improve water usage. “There are 70 countries in the world today that have no access to weather information,” said José Graziano da Silva, director general of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). He was speaking after signing the agreement on Monday with Spain’s Telefónica SA, one of the world’s largest telecommunications companies. “They don’t know if it’s going to rain other than by looking out of the window,” he said, adding that the deal would help to reduce the divide between rural and urban areas on access to information and new technology. “We believe that there is an urgent need to use the data and information available globally and translate it into useful and accessible information locally, useful to small-scale producers,” he said.
A pilot project will help farmers in El Salvador and Colombia maximise their water resources. It is similar to an existing project of Telefónica’s in Chile, which has struggled with a multi-year drought. The project in Chile covers 17,000 hectares and ten crops in four regions, and uses specialised equipment whose sensors measure humidity and solar activity, among others, and send data via a low-cost wireless network. FAO said the project would be replicated in areas of Central America’s “Dry Corridor” which runs through Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. Home to about 10.5 million people, experts say it is vulnerable to extreme weather exacerbated by climate change. Once the data is processed, farmers get recommendations specific to their crops on their smartphones, leading to a 20 percent reduction in water usage, said Vicente Muñoz, Telefónica’s chief officer on the Internet of Things (IoT). “So we have the experience, the knowledge, and the distribution for this collaboration with FAO,” Muñoz told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. SAN FRANCISCO - Amazon. com Inc paid about $90 million to acquire the maker of Blink home security cameras late last year, in a secret bet on the startup’s energyefficient chips, people familiar with the matter told Reuters. The deal’s rationale and price tag, previously unreported, underscore how Amazon aims to do more than sell another popular camera, as analysts had thought. The online retailer is exploring chips exclusive to Blink that could lower production costs and lengthen the battery life of other gadgets, starting with Amazon’s Cloud Cam and potentially extending to its family of Echo speakers, one of the people said. Amazon views its in-house devices as key to deepening its relationship with shoppers. The Cloud Cam and Echo currently need a plug-in power source to operate. Blink, which says its cameras can last two years on a single pair of AA lithium batteries, could change that. Amazon declined to comment on the acquisition’s terms or strategy. The deal so far has drawn little attention. The camera maker announced its takeover by Amazon with scant details in a Dec. 21 blog post. Analysts have viewed Blink as part of the retailer’s strategy for Amazon Key, a new program where shoppers can set up a smart lock and surveillance camera so delivery personnel can slip packages inside their homes when they are away. Amazon also sees opportunity in the security camera market as smart-home technology expands. But Blink was not merely a camera business. Its little-known
owner, Immedia Semiconductor, was started in Massachusetts by old hands from the chip industry. Chief Executive Peter Besen and two of his co-founders came from Sand Video, which had designed chips in the early 2000s that decoded a new and improved video standard. In 2004 they sold Sand Video to Broadcom Ltd and remained there as executives, according to an Immedia website. The group left in 2008 to create Immedia, aiming to design chips for video conferencing, and later targeting laptop makers as potential customers. Dan Grunberg, a co-founder who left Immedia in 2016, said that plan fell through. Laptop makers were unwilling to pay $1 per chip when cheaper options were on the market. So Immedia pivoted. “If we make our own camera, we don’t have to sell a hundred million” chips, he said. Grunberg declined to discuss Immedia’s sale to Amazon. The Blink security camera, which hit the market in 2016, did not require a power cable like many rival products, making it easier to place around users’ properties. It was cheaper, too, starting at $99. Amazon’s wired Cloud Cam launched at $119.99, while Netgear Inc’s wire-free Arlo cost more still. Netgear said last week it plans to spin off its Arlo business. “Battery life is a big issue in connected devices,” said Scott Jacobson, a former Amazon devices manager and now managing director of Madrona Venture Group. “Always-on cameras that last for months and don’t require a wired connection or an electrician to install could be game-changing.” (rtr)

Entering 2018, commercial property rebounds
DENPASAR — Based on the results of survey made by Bank Indonesia (BI), when entering 2018, commercial property rebounded. The eruption of Mount Agung disaster is considered to have no longer impact on tourism activities in the first quarter of 2018 and hotel demand from foreign and domestic tourists will improve again. Chief of Representative Office of Bank Indonesia for Bali Region, Causa Iman Karana, explained that in addition to hotel properties, the other type of property such as retails and shopping centers featuring the concept of lifestyle is still experiencing a positive trend. The biggest demand is from F & B tenants, supermarkets and cinema. Despite the positive trend, in the first quarter of 2018, Iman predicted the property of retail segment will not increase. So far, there is no plan to build a new commercial center functioned as a shopping center with the concept of mall. Commercial properties consist of offices, retail, apartments, star-rated hotels and industrial land. The rebound of commercial property can be seen from the condition in the third quarter and fourth quarter of 2017. The basic rental price of the office space and rental price of apartment service remains stable. Meanwhile, the retail price of shopping centers and hotel rooms tends to go down in line with the quiet visitors and tourists due to eruption of Mount Agung. The occupancy rate of commercial property stays low in the range of 59.15 percent to 85.40 percent during the period.
The cumulative supply of hotels in the fourth quarter of 2017 reached 15,420 and the third quarter reached 14,285. In the meantime, the cumulative demand in the fourth quarter of 2017 reached 8,418 and 10,303 in the third quarter of 2017. There are new (room) supplies in the fourth quarter being equal to 1,135 and 495 in the third quarter of 2017. Meanwhile, the hotel occupancy rate reached 54.59 percent in the fourth quarter and 72.12 percent in the third quarter of 2017. Retail segment properties get quite high demand. Cumulative demand in the fourth quarter of 2017 reached 202.402 square meters and 203,164 square meters in the third quarter of 2017. Meanwhile, the existing supply amounts to 237,009 per square meter in the third quarter and fourth quarter of 2017. The occupancy rate of retail market is quite large, namely 85.40 percent in the fourth quarter of 2017, out of a total supply of 237,009 square meters from 11 shopping centers. The occupancy rate slightly decreased as the impact of Mount Agung eruption resulting in significant drop in visitor traffic. The average decrease in the occupancy rate of retail property reached 0.32 percent from 85.72 percent in the third quarter of 2017 to 85.40 percent in the fourth quarter of 2017. The amount of free space reached 34,607 square meters. The basic rental price of the retail market was IDR 634,172 per square meter per month in the third quarter of 2017, higher than in the fourth quarter of 2017 at IDR 630,274. (kmb42)

Currently, the government has officially decreased the alert status of Mount Agung from level IV (warning) to level III (watch). Upon the decision, tourism players hoped this situation can restore the development of tourism industry in this region. This was expressed by Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Buleleng, Dewa Ketut Suardipa, when met in Singaraja on Monday (Feb. 12). Further, Suardipa said the decrease in the alert status of Mount Agung is a good opportunity to organize tourism business after long affected by the Mount Agung eruption. As an effort to boost tourism, local government is asked to increase tourism promotion in the region. This effort can be done through implementation of national and international events. “Coinciding with the current low season, the government’s decision is appropriate to reduce the alert status of Mount Agung.
It becomes a good opportunity to re-arrange tourism and it can be offered in the high season,” he said. Suardipa exemplified the implementation of the National Jamboree of VW Car scheduled to be held in Buleleng in September 2018. It is one of the efforts to boost the tourist visits to the region. Approximately 3,000 participants will enliven this event of automotive lovers. Tourism players very much expected this activity because the national-scale event will not only have impact on hotel room occupancy, but also becomes a promotional event for the tourist object and attraction in North Bali. In addition, national activities are expected not only to be centered in big cities of Indonesia, but must be diverted to the regions. “Thankfully, the alert status of Mount Agung has been decreased. Now, it is time to reorganize and improve our tourism promotion, so that in the next high season the weakening tourism business can return to normal,” he explained. Suardipa added that since the eruption of Mount Agung, tourists visit dropped drastically. Moreover, there are hotels whose occupancy rate reached zero percent. Bali predicted to lack qualified labor in 2030 YOGYAKARTA - Based on the results of a survey conducted by the Bank Indonesia (BI), Bali is predicted to have a shortage of qualified labour by 2025 and into 2030 when there will is likely to be the some 47, 736 operators, supervisors and mangers lacking in Bali. If Bali;s own labour pool cannot fill these positions, then people from outside Bali will have to fill them. Analyst from the Bank Indonesia’s Bali Representative Office, Umran Usman, explained that the prediction is based on the economic growth of Bali in conjunction with the education of potential workers. “This way we can predict
what jobs will be available in Bali and how many people in Bali will be able to fill these positions” said Usman during a workshop held by the Bali representative Office of the Bank of Indonesia on Friday (Feb. 9). By assuming that the population of Bali will have reached 4 million with 77.5 percent of these people making up the workforce, it is predicted that there will be a lack of local workforce particularly at the level of operators. It is predicted that Bali will lack from 16, 938 operators in 2025 and 25, 780 in 2030. There si also predicted to be a shortage of 13, 621 supervisors in 2025 and 21, 125 lacking in 2030. At the managerial level, there is predicted to be some 537 people lacking in 2025 and 831 managers lacking in 2030.

“Human resources are not educated and trained better than they are today, there will be an even greater shortage of local labour to fill these positions. This will certain cause Bali to have to accept migrants from outside Bali”, he said. One of the main obstacles said Usman is that the training material used by the Vocational Training Center (BLK) and formal education institutions are not up to date with industry needs.. “The material has not changed but the industry has seen massive changes including things like online bookings”, siad Usman. Having educational out of date material will cause greater and greater shortages of qualified workers. According to Usman massive changes need to be made immediately. The government for example should take steps towards improving BKLs and other vocational education institutions. Bali is facing serious challenges in terms of human resources. The Bank of Indonesia’s survey also showed that tourism industry business owners consider Balinese workers to be of lower quality than workers from outside Bali particularly at the managerial level. Quality issues range from productivity, creativity, discipline to communication skills. Most international brand hotels for example fill their leadership positions with people form outside Bali. Balinese workers only excel in terms of responsibility and honesty. It is also more difficult for people from Bali to migrate to other regions due to mobility costs, socio-cultural factors as well as issues related to psychological impact. The cost of labour migration for people from Bali and Nusa Tenggara is higher than for people from other regions. In fact it is estimated to be IDR 14.95 million more for them to migrate. As a result there are far fewer people from Bali and Nusa Teggara who migrate to other regions to work compared to people form other parts of Indonesia. “Thus, we see the tendency for people from outside Bali to seek work in Bali not Balinese people looking for work elsewhere. Damaged road prevents evacuees from going home SEMARAPURA - The alert status of Mount Agung was lowered from warning to watch on Saturday (Feb. 10) and the radius of the danger zone was reduced from 6km to 4 km. Nevertheless, thousands of evacuees in the district of Klungkung have not made a move to return home yet. They are waiting for official information and residents of Bukit Galah, Sogra Hamlet and Sebudi, Selat are concerned about the road to their villages having been cut off by lava flows. As seen in Swecapura Stadium, Gelgel village, on Sunday (Feb. 11), very few evacuees had returned home. The few families that did leave had their belong-
ings taken home by truck. “We heard that the we are allowed to go home, that the alert status has been lowered”, said Wayang Sriana from Sebudi, Selat. Although news of the lowered alert status was welcomed with relief by many, many others are still haunted by anxiety as Sebudi is located quite close to the highest mountain in Bali. Sriana and his family obviously hope that conditions will be back to normal soon. “Although I still have some doubts, many people have gone home, so we joined them”, he said. Nyoman Jawi, an evacuee from Bukit Galah, Sogra, Sebudi, said that he is eager to go home but that he cannot do so immediately
as lava flows from the last eruption have cut off the road access to his village. There is no other way to reach his village. “Our village has been cut off, so we cannot go home yet”, he said. Dozens of families are in the same boat as Jawi. The government is expected to open the road again as it is the only way that people could evacuate should there be another eruption. “If we were to go home now, and there was another eruption, we would not be able to evacuate very quickly as no vehicles can pass through the only road out of our village”, he explained. Chief Executive of the Klungkung Regional Disaster Manage-
ment Agency (BPBD), Putu Widiada, said that only about a dozen or so people have left evacuation posts in Klungkung. There are still roughly 3,000 evacuees spread across some 30 villages who are waiting for further information from the Pasubayan. “We do not have exact data year, but there are still thousands of evacuees here”, said Widiada. According to official information, all evacuees here are allowed to go home as their villages are all located outside ot the 4 km radius of the danger zone. However any evacuees who want to stay here a few more days, the Government of Klungkung will coordinate matters with the gov-
ernment of Karangasem. “There are no residences within the 4 km radius, so all evacuees can go home and as a consequence the government of Klungkung is no longer able to provide assistance for the evacuees. If there are still evacuees here we will immediately coordinate with Karangasem”, he said. Klungkung’ s district government will provide three buses and trucks for the evacuees to return home. Widiada is still waiting for instructions form the regent regarding the remaining food stocks. “We have already asked the regent for directions and are waiting to hear back”, he concluded. (kmb45)

LOS ANGELES - Justin Timberlake snagged the No.1 Spot on the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart with “Man of the Woods,” despite harsh reviews and a Super Bowl halftime show that was deemed underwhelming on social media and by music critics. “Man of the Woods,” Timberlake’s first studio album since 2013, sold more than 242,000 units in its first week of release, according to Nielsen Music data released on Monday. The Billboard 200 chart tallies units from album sales, song sales (10 songs equal one album) and streaming activity (1,500 streams equal one album). “Man of the Woods” marks Timberlake’s fourth Billboard No.1 album and was the biggest-selling album in the U.S. since Taylor Swift’s “Reputation” in December 2017, Billboard said. It debuted at No.1 after a Feb. 4 Super Bowl performance consisting mostly of Timberlake’s old hits that also featured a controversial segment featuring a huge projection of Prince, who died in 2016. The former NSYNC singer also took heat on social media for failing to mention, or perform with, Janet Jackson after
an infamous 2004 Super Bowl appearance which ended with Timberlake ripping off Jackson’s top and accidentally briefly exposing her breast. Nevertheless, the Super Bowl and halftime show were watched by some 103 million Americans on television. Nielsen Music reported last week that on-demand audio and video streams for all of the songs performed by Timberlake jumped 45 percent on the day after the game, compared to the day before. Timberlake, best known for pop tracks like “SexyBack” and “Rock Your Body,” promoted “Man of the Woods” as a country-inspired album that took him back to his Memphis roots. But the album had few fans among music reviewers. Esquire called it “disappointing” and “kind of embarrassing,” while USA Today said the album “can’t pull off its Americana-pop fusion.” (rtr)

Bold, black and beautiful, ’Black Panther’ hopes for cultural shift

LOS ANGELES - Some film critics are calling it the best Marvel movie so far; others say it’s a correction after years of neglecting minority talent in Hollywood. The predominantly black cast of superhero movie “Black Panther” hope its combination of African pride, beauty and kick-ass adventure will also mark a cultural shift in the movie industry and beyond. The Disney movie, opening worldwide this week, tells the story of T’Challa/Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), the new king of the futuristic, wealth-laden African nation Wakanda, who is challenged by factions within his own country. “Marvel has a way of really affecting popular culture,” said Lupita Nyong’o, who plays the
Wakandan warrior spy, Nakia. “Hopefully it changes the general idea of what being an African is. Too often times we see Africa as a place that is wanting, and here it’s a place that you want to go,” she said. The movie, directed by Ryan Coogler and also featuring Michael B. Jordan, Angela Bassett, Forest Whittaker and Daniel Kaluuya, arrives to stellar reviews after years of criticism about the under-representation of movies, actors and filmmakers of color in Hollywood. Analysts expect it to rake in some $150 million at the North American box office on its opening weekend, and the filmmakers hope it will encourage studios to invest in more mainstream, racially
diverse films. “It’s not often that you see two black men in a movie playing a role of this importance. You see it with white actors, (like) ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ where it’s Brad Pitt and Matt Damon and George Clooney, and it’s like ‘why does that never happen with us?’” Boseman said. “Hopefully the success of this will make it be commonplace. It’ll make Hollywood stop saying ‘well, your movies don’t travel,” he said. “Black Panther” also offers a new type of villain through Jordan’s Killmonger, an empathetic former military black-ops agent, who wants to distribute Wakanda’s wealth to arm the world’s black population and help them rise to power. ANC decides to remove Zuma as South African President
JOHANNESBURG - The ANC has decided to sack Jacob Zuma as President of South Africa, a senior official said on Tuesday, after a marathon meeting to determine the fate of a leader whose scandal-plagued years in power darkened and divided Nelson Mandela’s ‘Rainbow Nation’. The decision by the ruling party’s national executive came in the early hours of the morning, after 13 hours of tense deliberations and one face-to-face meeting between Zuma and his presumed successor, deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa. Zuma has been living on borrowed time since Ramaphosa, a union leader once tipped as Mandela’s pick to take over the reins, was elected as head of the 106-year-old ANC in December, narrowly defeating Zuma’s ex-wife, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
