Inarritu, Ridley Scott earn Directors Guild nods

LOS ANGELES - Mexico’s Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Britain’s Ridley Scott on Tuesday topped the list of nominees for the Directors Guild of America (DGA) award -- a strong indicator of Oscar hopes. Inarritu was nominated for revenge thriller “The Revenant” and Scott for space hit “The Martian,” about an astronaut stranded on Mars -- two films seen as top contenders for Academy Awards glory on February 28. This marks the fourth nomination for both directors by the DGA. Inarritu won the award last year for dark comedy “Birdman,” for which he also won an Oscar. The 52-year-old Mexican filmmaker won the Golden Globe for best director on Sunday for “The Revenant,” about 19th century fur trapper Hugh Glass, who is played by another Oscar hopeful, Leonardo

DiCaprio. The film took three prizes overall including best motion picture drama and one for DiCaprio. Should Inarritu win the DGA award again this year, he would be the first director in the Guild’s history with back-to-back wins. “The Martian,” starring Matt Damon, won two awards at the Golden Globes on Sunday -- best comedy film and best actor in a comedy for Damon. LOS ANGELES — “Fifty Shades of Grey” is all tied up with “Pixels,” ‘’Jupiter Ascending” and “Paul Blart Mall Cop 2” for the most nominations at this year’s Golden Raspberry Awards celebrating the worst in cinema. The films led the Razzies lineup Wednesday with six nods each, including worst picture and worst actor for Jamie Dornan in the sexy thriller “Fifty Shades of Grey,” Kevin James in the comedy sequel “Paul Blart Mall Cop 2,” Channing Tatum in the sci-fi film “Jupiter Ascending” and Adam Sandler in the video game mash-up “Pixels” and fantasy-comedy “The Cobbler.” The other worst picture nominee is the superhero flop “Fantastic Four,” which is also up for worst remake, screen combo, director for Josh Trank and screenplay for Simon Kinberg, Jeremy Slater and Trank. The British national, born in Watford, England, on December 26, 1958, was arrested shortly after landing at the Ngurah Rai International Airport on January 9 at 12 p.m. local time. He arrived from Dong Mueang, Thailand, aboard AirAsia flight FD-396 to Denpasar. Using technology capable of tracking passenger movement, the officers were suspicious of Hakes when the aircraft landed. The ground officers closely observed him at the arrival corridor, immigration checkpoint, and during inspection in the custom area. At first, the officers manually checked Hakes’ luggage and then continued the process using X-ray scanning equipment, but they did not find any suspicious items. The officers’ suspicions led them to conduct a body check on Hakes.

They eventually found a clear plastic bag containing some parts of brown plants. Double-checking through a narcotic test revealed the presence of marijuana or hashish weighing three grams. As a result of his action, Hakes is believed to have violated Article 113, paragraph (1) of Law No. 35 of 2009 on narcotics. If found guilty, Hakes would have to face a minimum five years to a maximum 15 years of jail term in addition to a fine of between Rp1 billion and Rp10 billion. Maybe someday prospective employers will require that their employees have been members of organizations that contribute to qualified human resources and reject applicants who have been members of organizations that are considered to contribute to the creation of less qualified human resources. Adnyana also elaborated on the need for Balinese people to continuously learn how to deal with problems and enrich their insight so that they can compete locally and internationally. This is not just a matter of creating new policies, there needs to be a real change in terms of people’s mindset, so that those things that are most important to us are preserved and protected,” said Ardhana. Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Eating taters pre-pregnancy may boost diabetes risk

PARIS - Eating lots of potatoes -- especially chips or crisps -- is linked to a higher risk for women of developing a type of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy, a study said Wednesday. So-called gestational diabetes can have long-term health consequences for both mother and child, including a higher chance of heart disease and other forms of diabetes. Potatoes -- consumed massively across the globe -- contain important nutrients, including vitamin C and potassium. But compared to other vegetables and carbohydrates, they also contain extra starch, which is associated with a more rapid increase in blood sugar levels.

Generally speaking, diabetes occurs when the body is no longer able to make enough insulin, a hormone that prompts cells in the body to absorb sugar from the blood for energy and storage. Up to now, the possible association between gestational diabetes and eating spuds had not been investigated. To see if there was a link, researchers led by Cuilin Zhang at the National Institutes of Health in Rockville, Maryland used data from the Nurses’ Health Study II, which

has monitored more than 115,000 women since 1989. Zhang and colleagues looked at the records for 15,632 women with no history of gestational diabetes or chronic disease who became pregnant between 1991 and 2001. Of 21,693 single-foetus pregnancies, 854 -- some four percent -- developed gestational diabetes, according to the study published in the British Medical Journal. The women were asked to report their potato consumption during the year previous to becoming pregnant, rating intake from “never or less than once a month” to “six portions per day”. This data was matched against

medical records which showed whether they had developed gestational diabetes. After taking other factors such as age and family history of diabetes into account, the study found a strong link with taters, especially fried and baked. “Higher total potato consumption was significantly associated with an increased risk of gestational diabetes,” the researchers concluded. Doctors recommend changes in diet and exercise with the onset of gestational diabetes but in severe cases insulin treatment may be required. The solution? Eat other veg-

PARIS - Oral contraceptives taken just before or during pregnancy do not increase the risk of birth defects, according to a large-scale study published Wednesday. Examining records for nearly 900,000 live births in Denmark, researchers found that even women who used the pill after becoming pregnant were no more likely to have babies with serious defects than mothers who had never used it. “We confirmed that there wasn’t any association between oral contraceptives and major birth defects,” lead author Brittany Charlton, a scientist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, told AFP by phone. “Our findings were especially reassuring given that we were able to use a different approach.” Most previous research, she explained, is based on “case controlled” studies, which begin with a fairly rare outcome -- a birth defect -- and then work backwards, looking for a cause. Several of these studies, some decades old, had found a link between use of the hormonebased contraceptives and defects, even if most did not. “We were able to leverage prescription registries and thus eliminate any bias from women inaccurately recalling their use” of the pill, Charlton said. Drawing from Danish national health records from 1997 to 2011, Charlton and colleagues divided the women into four groups. A fifth -- some 176,000 women -- had never used the pill, while more than two-thirds stopped at least three months before becoming pregnant. Eight percent discontinued use within three months of conceiving, while one percent -- well above a statistically significant 10,000 women -- used oral contraceptives after becoming pregnant. For all categories, the ratio of normal birth to those with major defects was exactly the same -- 25 per 1,000 live births. This ratio remained consistent across all groups even with the inclusion of pregnancies that ended in stillbirths or induced abortions. The study was published in the medical journal BMJ. (afp)

NEGARA - Division Head of the Botanical Garden Conservation Area Development of the LIPI, Dr. Joko Ridho Witono recently announced that the Jaganatha Botanical Garden, located on 5.8 hectares of land around the Jaganatha temple, will feature feature plants used in medicine (usadhic) and ritual. The theme for the botanical garden was determined based on the results of a survey conducted by the LIPI that indicated great public interest in this kinds of plants. The survey also included soil analysis, native plants and the social and cultural conditions around the location. The wealth of plants used for ritual purposes in Bali and the garden’s proximity of Jaganatha Temple makes this theme all the more suitable. The soil of the location however does pose some challenges as it is classified as alluvial soil AKA clay soil, making it relatively unstable as ground for building on. Also, water does not easily flow through this type of soil so plants that can store a lot of water will grow here best. Others may have to be potted. Kwanitan (rosewood), has been

chosen as the emblem of the garden. This plant can grow as high as 30 meters, has round black seeds and is native to the district of Jembrana. The garden, said Witono, will function both for recreation and education and will include a plant nursery, a management office, and a wi-fi corner where students can learn more about the plants. The entire garden will be free of motorized vehicles. Witono is optimistic that the garden’ strategic location near the town centre will help attract visitors who will be able to contribute to a positive economic and social impact on the surrounding community. Spokesperson of Bali Police, Hery Wiyanto, said on Tuesday (Jan. 12) that the disclosure of the case is purely the result of field investigation of his men. Russia to supply small arms to Afghanistan

MOSCOW — Amid increasing concerns about instability in Afghanistan pouring over into the former Soviet republics and Russia, the Russian foreign ministry says it plans to supply small arms to Kabul though it will refrain from sending other weapons. “The delivery will be in February and for now it’s more than sufficient,” said Russia’s special envoy to Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov. He was quoted Wednesday by the Russian news agency Interfax. Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned leaders of Central Asian nations of a possible militant incursion from Afghanistan and has called the situation “close to critical.” Facing threats from ISIS, al-Qaida and the Taliban, Kabul has made overtures to Moscow to increase military aid to Afghanistan as the United States attempts to wind down its presence there. APLI: Beware of ‘money game’ under disguise of MLM

MANGUPURA - The practice of money games (MG) in Indonesia is quite astonishing. Chairman of the Direct Selling Association of Indonesia (APLI), Djoko H. S. Korea fires warning shots after North Korean drone seen

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea on Wednesday fired 20 machine gun warning shots after a North Korean drone briefly crossed the rivals’ border, officials said, the first shots fired in a Cold War-style standoff between the Koreas in the wake of the North’s nuclear test last week. The North Korean drone was flying dozens of meters (yards) south of the border and turned back to the North after the South fired shots, South Korean defense and military officials said, requesting anonymity because of office rules. The shots did not hit the drone. North Korean drone flights across the world’s most heavily armed border are rare, but have happened before. North Korea has in recent years touted its drone program, a relatively new addition to its arsenal. In 2013, state media said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had watched a drone attack drill on a simulated South Korean target. In 2014, Seoul officials discovered what they called several North Korean drones that had flown across the border. Those drones were crude and decidedly low-tech, but were still considered a potential new security threat. Animosity has been high since the North’s claim on Jan. 6 that it had tested a hydrogen bomb. There is widespread skepticism over the H-

bomb claim, but whatever the North detonated underground will likely push the country closer toward a fully functional nuclear arsenal, which it still is not thought to have. The North previously conducted atomic bomb tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013. Since Friday, South Korea has been blasting anti-Pyongyang propaganda and K-pop songs from huge speakers along the border. The North, which calls the broadcasts an act of war meant to threaten its system of government, is using speakers of its own in an attempt to keep its soldiers from hearing the South Korean messages. Seoul said Wednesday that North Korea had also flown balloons with thousands of leaflets across the border, some of them describing South Korean President Park Geun-hye and her government as “mad dogs.” North Korea’s propaganda machine is using the nuclear test to glorify Kim’s leadership and describing it as a necessary step to fight against what it calls a U.S.-led attempt to overthrow the North’s system.

Pyongyang’s state TV on Wednesday aired photos showing a smiling Kim awarding commendations to scientists and other workers involved in the test and shaking hands with them at a Workers’ Party building. Kim called the scientists and workers “nuclear combatants” and “the heroes of heroes” who evoked fears to the U.S. and its allies, according to the state news agency. Park on Wednesday urged North Korea’s only major ally, China, to help punish Pyongyang for its nuclear test with what she called “the strongest” possible international sanctions that can force change in the North. Diplomats at a U.N. Security Council emergency session last week pledged to swiftly pursue new sanctions. Planes from the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle have already provided cover for Iraqi troops fighting in the besieged city of Ramadi following the vessel’s deployment Nov. 5. That shows that while the Islamic State group “still taunts us, (it) is no longer capable of holding the ground,” French Rear Admiral Rene-Jean Crignola told The Associated Press. “The Paris attacks reinforced the determination of the crew and of our fleet,” said Crignola, the first foreign commander to lead Task Force 50, which conducts airstrikes in territory in Iraq and Syria overseen by the U.S. Navy’s Bahrain-based 5th Fleet. “It’s on everyone’s mind. The sense of purpose of our men is crystal clear.” France has been one of the most active members of the American-led coalition, and is the only nation aside from the U.S. to bring an aircraft carrier to the fight. French President Francois Hollande ordered the nuclear-powered Charles de Gaulle to the Gulf just days after Islamic extremists launched a deadly attack on the Paris office of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in January 2015, killing 11 people inside and a police officer outside. Foreign investment plummets in junta ruled Thailand BANGKOK - Foreign investment in Thailand plummeted last year, official data showed, the latest sign that the kingdom’s oncevibrant economy continues to falter under prolonged military rule. Total investment applied for by foreign companies between January and November 2015 plunged 78 percent from a year earlier to 93.8 billion baht ($2.62 billion), according to figures from Thailand’s state-run Board of Investment (BoI) sent to AFP late Tuesday. The figures will do little to cheer junta leader Prayut Chan-O-Cha, who seized power in a May 2014 coup vowing to restore stability but who has struggled to kickstart the

country’s lacklustre economy. After years of impressive growth, Thailand’s economy is struggling, mired in high household debt, stuttering exports and low consumer confidence. It also faces stiff competition from increasingly attractive neighbours like Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar. Particularly worrying for Prime Minister Prayut is a significant drop off in investment from Japan -- historically the largest investor in Thailand by far -- which slumped 81 percent. EU investment also plunged from 86.7 billion baht in 2014 to just 2 billion baht last year. Invest-

SYDNEY - Four Indonesian fishermen who spent eight days adrift in the remote Timor Sea on a makeshift raft were rescued by marine authorities and a fishing vessel Wednesday, Australian officials said, adding that they were in “good health” despite their ordeal. The men were spotted by an Australian Border Force plane in the Timor Sea on Tuesday evening and a nearby fishing vessel AFV Exodus was called on to pick up the men early Wednesday morning, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said. The fishing boat was later met by the Australian Navy ship HMAS Maitland, AMSA added. “All survivors have been medically assessed and are in good health. The fishermen will be repatriated to their home port of Kupang, Indonesia,” AMSA said in a statement. The skipper of the Exodus, Gary Finlay, said the men were “140

miles off the nearest Kimberley Coast... basically in the middle of nowhere”. “It was a wing and a prayer keeping them afloat,” Finlay told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, adding that the raft was just 1.5-square-metres (16-square-feet) in size and made from debris from the fishermen’s ship. “They had two fuel cells latched together as the base of the boat then around the two fuel cells they had plastic 20-litre (5.3 US gallon) drums,” he said. “They had a couple of 40-litre plastic blue containers latched there and a 400-kilo (882 pound) ice box that was half submerged.” Finlay said when his crew found the Indonesians, they were kneedeep in water and their feet were “suffering”. JAKARTA - Indonesian energy company Lapindo Brantas plans to resume drilling for gas near the site of a mud volcano, its CEO said, referring to a disaster that some scientists say it helped to create around 10 years ago. The Sidoarjo mud volcano, which started erupting in May 2006 near Indonesia’s second-biggest city of Surabaya, inundated 12 villages and has displaced around 60,000 people. It has now become a tourist attraction. YOGYAKARTA - A Filipina on death row in Indonesia was visited by family Tuesday for a late birthday celebration, as her supporters maintained the single mother would be proclaimed innocent and escape the firing squad. Mary Jane Veloso was reunited with her parents and two children at a prison in Yogyakarta two days after her birthday, where they presented her with gifts and letters from her supporters in the Philippines.

The 31-year-old was granted a temporary reprieve in April just moments before she was due to be executed alongside eight other convicted drug traffickers, including seven foreigners. ISTANBUL — Turkish police have arrested one person in connection with the suicide bombing in Istanbul that killed 10 foreigners, most of them German tourists, the interior minister said Wednesday. The suspect was detained late Tuesday, Interior Minister Efkan Ala said during a news conference with his German counterpart. He didn’t provide further details. Turkish media reports said police had raided a home in an affluent neighborhood of Istanbul, detaining one woman suspected of having links to the Islamic State group. On Wednesday, Turkish police also arrested 13 suspected IS militants, including three Russian nationals, a day after the bombing in Istanbul’s historic Sultanahmet district. The attack, which also wounded 15 other people, including Germans, a Norwegian man and a Peruvian woman, was the latest in a string of attacks by Islamic extremists targeting Westerners. Turkish authorities identified the bomber as a Syrian born in 1988,

who had recently entered Turkey and wasn’t among a list of potential bombers wanted by Turkey. CANBERRA, Australia — Officials say a woman is in a hospital in stable condition after she was attacked by a crocodile on Australia’s northwest coast. A Department of Parks and Wildlife official says the woman was attacked Wednesday in a creek near the town of Wyndham in Western Australia state. Western Australia Country Health Service spokesman Peter Cogan says the woman’s condition was stabilized at Wyndham Distract Hospital. She will be flown east to the larger Royal Darwin Hospital for further treatment. Cogan provided no details of her injuries, but said her condition remained stable. Crocodile numbers have boomed across Australia’s northern tropics since they became a protected species under federal law in 1971, and are an increasing threat to humans. (ap)

Chechnya’s Kadyrov calls for punishing Russian opposition

MOSCOW — The strongman leader of Russia’s Chechnya republic says Russian opposition activists should be considered traitors and punished for their “subversive activities.” The statement by Ramzan Kadyrov drew harsh criticism on Wednesday from rights activists, including Russian human rights ombudsman Ella Pamfilova. The opposition has come under increased pressure since the mass protests in Moscow that accompanied Vladimir Putin’s return to the presidency in 2012. Kadyrov told Chechen journalists that opposition activists were trying to use Russia’s current economic difficulties to shake up the political situation and should be brought to judgment as “enemies of the people” and traitors. ZURICH - FIFA said on Wednesday it had fired Secretary General Jerome Valcke amid alleged corruption involving World Cup ticket sales, one of many scandals surrounding soccer’s governing body. “The FIFA Emergency Committee decided, on 9 January 2016, to dismiss Jerome Valcke from the position of FIFA Secretary General with immediate effect,” Zurich-based FIFA said in a statement without giving a reason for the dismissal. Valcke was once one of the most powerful men in FIFA and responsible for ensuring that preparations for the last two World Cups, in South Africa and Brazil, were completed in time. An ethics investigation into

the case recommended a nineyear ban for the Frenchman, former right-hand man to FIFA President Sepp Blatter who himself has been banned for eight years. Last week FIFA’s ethics judges announced they had opened formal proceedings against Valcke, who has denied wrongdoing in the past. Valcke was placed on leave by FIFA in September following the allegations and initially suspended for 90 days in October when the ethics committee started its investigation. That suspension was extended for another 45 days last week and a ban from all soccer activities remains in effect. The secretary general’s duties will continue to be carried

out by Acting Secretary General Markus Kattner, FIFA said. Valcke has now been sacked twice by FIFA. He joined the organisation in 2003 as marketing director but was fired in December 2006 for his part in botched sponsorship negotiations with credit card firms MasterCard Inc and Visa Inc. ZURICH - FIFA said on Wednesday it had fired Secretary General Jerome Valcke amid alleged corruption involving World Cup ticket sales, one of many scandals surrounding soccer’s governing body. “The FIFA Emergency Committee decided, on 9 January 2016, to dismiss Jerome Valcke from the position of FIFA Secretary General with immediate effect,” Zurich-based FIFA said in a statement without giving a reason for the dismissal. Valcke was once one of the most powerful men in FIFA and responsible for ensuring that preparations for the last two World Cups, in South Africa and Brazil, were completed in time. An ethics investigation into

the case recommended a nineyear ban for the Frenchman, former right-hand man to FIFA President Sepp Blatter who himself has been banned for eight years. Last week FIFA’s ethics judges announced they had opened formal proceedings against Valcke, who has denied wrongdoing in the past. Valcke was placed on leave by FIFA in September following the allegations and initially suspended for 90 days in October when the ethics committee started its investigation. That suspension was extended for another 45 days last week and a ban from all soccer activities remains in effect. The secretary general’s duties will continue to be carried

ISTANBUL — Turkish police have arrested one person in connection with the suicide bombing in Istanbul that killed 10 foreigners, most of them German tourists, the interior minister said Wednesday. The suspect was detained late Tuesday, Interior Minister Efkan Ala said during a news conference with his German counterpart. He didn’t provide further details. Turkish media reports said police had raided a home in an affluent neighborhood of Istanbul, detaining one woman suspected of having links to the Islamic State group. On Wednesday, Turkish police also arrested 13 suspected IS militants, including three Russian nationals, a day after the bombing in Istanbul’s historic Sultanahmet district. The attack, which also wounded 15 other people, including Germans, a Norwegian man and a Peruvian woman, was the latest in a string of attacks by Islamic extremists targeting Westerners. Turkish authorities identified the bomber as a Syrian born in 1988,

who had recently entered Turkey and wasn’t among a list of potential bombers wanted by Turkey. Turkish media, including newspapers close to the government, identified him as Nabil Fadli, and said he was born in Saudi Arabia. Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said Wednesday that authorities were working to identify people connected to the attacker. He wouldn’t provide details on the investigation, saying it would compromise those efforts. The Russians were detained in the Mediterranean coastal city of Antalya, a popular destination for tourists, but it wasn’t clear if the arrests were directly linked to the Istanbul bombing. The state-run Anadolu Agency said the suspects were allegedly in contact with IS fighters in conflict zones and

had provided logistical support to the group. Ten other people were detained in Turkey’s third largest city, Izmir, and in the central city of Konya. The Russian Foreign Ministry in November said the number of Russians that left for Syria to fight for the Islamic State group at 2,719. Of these, 160 have been killed, 73 have returned and been tried and 36 have been arrested. Tuesday’s blast just steps from the historic Blue Mosque was the first by IS to target Turkey’s vital tourism sector, although the militants have struck with deadly effect elsewhere in the country. Eight Germans were among the dead and nine others were wounded, some seriously, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier told reporters in Berlin. The nationalities of the two others killed in the blast weren’t immediately released, but both were foreigners German Interior Minister Thomas de Maziere arrived in Istanbul

CANBERRA, Australia — Officials say a woman is in a hospital in stable condition after she was attacked by a crocodile on Australia’s northwest coast. A Department of Parks and Wildlife official says the woman was attacked Wednesday in a creek near the town of Wyndham in Western Australia state. Western Australia Country Health Service spokesman Peter Cogan says the woman’s condition was stabilized at Wyndham Distract Hospital. She will be flown east to the larger Royal Darwin Hospital for further treatment. Cogan provided no details of her injuries, but said her condition remained stable. Crocodile numbers have boomed across Australia’s northern tropics since they became a protected species under federal law in 1971, and are an increasing threat to humans. (ap)

Chechnya’s Kadyrov calls for punishing Russian opposition

MOSCOW — The strongman leader of Russia’s Chechnya republic says Russian opposition activists should be considered traitors and punished for their “subversive activities.” The statement by Ramzan Kadyrov drew harsh criticism on Wednesday from rights activists, including Russian human rights ombudsman Ella Pamfilova. The opposition has come under increased pressure since the mass protests in Moscow that accompanied Vladimir Putin’s return to the presidency in 2012. Kadyrov told Chechen journalists that opposition activists were trying to use Russia’s current economic difficulties to shake up the political situation and should be brought to judgment as “enemies of the people” and traitors. His comments were seen as ominous because rights activists have accused Kadyrov of ordering the killings of some who oppose him or Putin. Kadyrov has denied the accusations. (ap)

Foreign investment plummets in junta ruled Thailand BANGKOK - Foreign investment in Thailand plummeted last year, official data showed, the latest sign that the kingdom’s oncevibrant economy continues to falter under prolonged military rule. Total investment applied for by foreign companies between January and November 2015 plunged 78 percent from a year earlier to 93.8 billion baht ($2.62 billion), according to figures from Thailand’s state-run Board of Investment (BoI) sent to AFP late Tuesday. The figures will do little to cheer junta leader Prayut Chan-O-Cha, who seized power in a May 2014 coup vowing to restore stability but who has struggled to kickstart the

country’s lacklustre economy. After years of impressive growth, Thailand’s economy is struggling, mired in high household debt, stuttering exports and low consumer confidence. It also faces stiff competition from increasingly attractive neighbours like Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar. Particularly worrying for Prime Minister Prayut is a significant drop off in investment from Japan -- historically the largest investor in Thailand by far -- which slumped 81 percent. EU investment also plunged from 86.7 billion baht in 2014 to just 2 billion baht last year. Invest-

SYDNEY - Four Indonesian fishermen who spent eight days adrift in the remote Timor Sea on a makeshift raft were rescued by marine authorities and a fishing vessel Wednesday, Australian officials said, adding that they were in “good health” despite their ordeal. The men were spotted by an Australian Border Force plane in the Timor Sea on Tuesday evening and a nearby fishing vessel AFV Exodus was called on to pick up the men early Wednesday morning, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said. The fishing boat was later met by the Australian Navy ship HMAS Maitland, AMSA added. “All survivors have been medically assessed and are in good health. The fishermen will be repatriated to their home port of Kupang, Indonesia,” AMSA said in a statement. The skipper of the Exodus, Gary Finlay, said the men were “140

miles off the nearest Kimberley Coast... basically in the middle of nowhere”. “It was a wing and a prayer keeping them afloat,” Finlay told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, adding that the raft was just 1.5-square-metres (16-square-feet) in size and made from debris from the fishermen’s ship. “They had two fuel cells latched together as the base of the boat then around the two fuel cells they had plastic 20-litre (5.3 US gallon) drums,” he said. “They had a couple of 40-litre plastic blue containers latched there and a 400-kilo (882 pound) ice box that was half submerged.” Finlay said when his crew found the Indonesians, they were kneedeep in water and their feet were “suffering”. Russia to supply small arms to Afghanistan

MOSCOW — Amid increasing concerns about instability in Afghanistan pouring over into the former Soviet republics and Russia, the Russian foreign ministry says it plans to supply small arms to Kabul though it will refrain from sending other weapons. “The delivery will be in February and for now it’s more than sufficient,” said Russia’s special envoy to Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov. He was quoted Wednesday by the Russian news agency Interfax. Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned leaders of Central Asian nations of a possible militant incursion from Afghanistan and has called the situation “close to critical.” Facing threats from ISIS, al-Qaida and the Taliban, Kabul has made overtures to Moscow to increase military aid to Afghanistan as the United States attempts to wind down its presence there. APLI: Beware of ‘money game’ under disguise of MLM

MANGUPURA - The practice of money games (MG) in Indonesia is quite astonishing. Chairman of the Direct Selling Association of Indonesia (APLI), Djoko H. S. Korea fires warning shots after North Korean drone seen

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea on Wednesday fired 20 machine gun warning shots after a North Korean drone briefly crossed the rivals’ border, officials said, the first shots fired in a Cold War-style standoff between the Koreas in the wake of the North’s nuclear test last week. The North Korean drone was flying dozens of meters (yards) south of the border and turned back to the North after the South fired shots, South Korean defense and military officials said, requesting anonymity because of office rules. The shots did not hit the drone. North Korean drone flights across the world’s most heavily armed border are rare, but have happened before. North Korea has in recent years touted its drone program, a relatively new addition to its arsenal. In 2013, state media said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had watched a drone attack drill on a simulated South Korean target. In 2014, Seoul officials discovered what they called several North Korean drones that had flown across the border. Those drones were crude and decidedly low-tech, but were still considered a potential new security threat. Animosity has been high since the North’s claim on Jan. 6 that it had tested a hydrogen bomb. There is widespread skepticism over the H-

Planes from the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle have already provided cover for Iraqi troops fighting in the besieged city of Ramadi following the vessel’s deployment Nov. 5. That shows that while the Islamic State group “still taunts us, (it) is no longer capable of holding the ground,” French Rear Admiral Rene-Jean Crignola told The Associated Press. “The Paris attacks reinforced the determination of the crew and of our fleet,” said Crignola, the first foreign commander to lead Task Force 50, which conducts airstrikes in territory in Iraq and Syria overseen by the U.S. Navy’s Bahrain-based 5th Fleet. “It’s on everyone’s mind. The sense of purpose of our men is crystal clear.” France has been one of the most active members of the American-led coalition, and is the only nation aside from the U.S. to bring an aircraft carrier to the fight. French President Francois Hollande ordered the nuclear-powered Charles de Gaulle to the Gulf just days after Islamic extremists launched a deadly attack on the Paris office of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in January 2015, killing 11 people inside and a police officer outside. Eating taters pre-pregnancy may boost diabetes risk

PARIS - Eating lots of potatoes -- especially chips or crisps -- is linked to a higher risk for women of developing a type of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy, a study said Wednesday. So-called gestational diabetes can have long-term health consequences for both mother and child, including a higher chance of heart disease and other forms of diabetes. Potatoes -- consumed massively across the globe -- contain important nutrients, including vitamin C and potassium. But compared to other vegetables and carbohydrates, they also contain extra starch, which is associated with a more rapid increase in blood sugar levels.

Generally speaking, diabetes occurs when the body is no longer able to make enough insulin, a hormone that prompts cells in the body to absorb sugar from the blood for energy and storage. Up to now, the possible association between gestational diabetes and eating spuds had not been investigated. To see if there was a link, researchers led by Cuilin Zhang at the National Institutes of Health in Rockville, Maryland used data from the Nurses’ Health Study II, which

has monitored more than 115,000 women since 1989. Zhang and colleagues looked at the records for 15,632 women with no history of gestational diabetes or chronic disease who became pregnant between 1991 and 2001. Of 21,693 single-foetus pregnancies, 854 -- some four percent -- developed gestational diabetes, according to the study published in the British Medical Journal. The women were asked to report their potato consumption during the year previous to becoming pregnant, rating intake from “never or less than once a month” to “six portions per day”. This data was matched against

medical records which showed whether they had developed gestational diabetes. After taking other factors such as age and family history of diabetes into account, the study found a strong link with taters, especially fried and baked. “Higher total potato consumption was significantly associated with an increased risk of gestational diabetes,” the researchers concluded. Doctors recommend changes in diet and exercise with the onset of gestational diabetes but in severe cases insulin treatment may be required. The solution? Eat other veg-

PARIS - Oral contraceptives taken just before or during pregnancy do not increase the risk of birth defects, according to a large-scale study published Wednesday. Examining records for nearly 900,000 live births in Denmark, researchers found that even women who used the pill after becoming pregnant were no more likely to have babies with serious defects than mothers who had never used it. “We confirmed that there wasn’t any association between oral contraceptives and major birth defects,” lead author Brittany Charlton, a scientist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, told AFP by phone. “Our findings were especially reassuring given that we were able to use a different approach.” Most previous research, she explained, is based on “case controlled” studies, which begin with a fairly rare outcome -- a birth defect -- and then work backwards, looking for a cause. Several of these studies, some decades old, had found a link between use of the hormonebased contraceptives and defects, even if most did not. “We were able to leverage prescription registries and thus eliminate any bias from women inaccurately recalling their use” of the pill, Charlton said. Drawing from Danish national health records from 1997 to 2011, Charlton and colleagues divided the women into four groups. A fifth -- some 176,000 women -- had never used the pill, while more than two-thirds stopped at least three months before becoming pregnant. Eight percent discontinued use within three months of conceiving, while one percent -- well above a statistically significant 10,000 women -- used oral contraceptives after becoming pregnant. For all categories, the ratio of normal birth to those with major defects was exactly the same -- 25 per 1,000 live births. The theme for the botanical garden was determined based on the results of a survey conducted by the LIPI that indicated great public interest in this kinds of plants. The survey also included soil analysis, native plants and the social and cultural conditions around the location. The wealth of plants used for ritual purposes in Bali and the garden’s proximity of Jaganatha Temple makes this theme all the more suitable. The soil of the location however does pose some challenges as it is classified as alluvial soil AKA clay soil, making it relatively unstable as ground for building on. Also, water does not easily flow through this type of soil so plants that can store a lot of water will grow here best. Others may have to be potted. Kwanitan (rosewood), has been

chosen as the emblem of the garden. This plant can grow as high as 30 meters, has round black seeds and is native to the district of Jembrana. The garden, said Witono, will function both for recreation and education and will include a plant nursery, a management office, and a wi-fi corner where students can learn more about the plants. The entire garden will be free of motorized vehicles. Witono is optimistic that the garden’ strategic location near the town centre will help attract visitors who will be able to contribute to a positive economic and social impact on the surrounding community. Deputy Regent of Jembrana, I Made Kembang Hartawan is enthusiastic about the concept for the garden, particularly as it can serve to teach Balinese people more about the plants that they so often have contact with in their offerings and ceremonies. For example, there are many varieties of coconut tree, the fruits of which are often used in ceremonies, so it would be interesting to have such trees in the garden and also have information about the trees and their fruit. Spokesperson of Bali Police, Hery Wiyanto, said on Tuesday (Jan. 12) that the disclosure of the case is purely the result of field investigation of his men. He added that so far four victims have been identified where they are averagely of above ten years. “All the victims live in Denpasar. The suspect indeed lives in Tabanan but looks for victims in Denpasar. Possibly there are also other victims in Tabanan, but still being developed by the investigators,” he said. The suspect was tracked down after the officers made reconnaissance. Spokesperson said that the suspect is often seen hitchhiking girls. Having got enough evidence, police finally raided the suspect in his residence in Tabanan around 18:30. “The suspect has long been living in Bali. On that account, he has possibly claimed a number of victims,” he said. Action of the suspect is quite astute. This long-bearded suspect is looking for innocent children. Subsequently, they are taken to his

boarding house and groped. After that, the victims are returned to previous place. “So, the victims do not know about the residence of the suspect. His victims are hitchhiked by motorcycle and taken to his boarding house such as in Denpasar,” said Hery. According to Hery, the victims even did not report the case after being treated indecently by the suspect. Related to this case, investigators examined five witnesses. Moreover, the residence of the suspect has been raided. Various evidences were confiscated including motorcycle and a record of people’s names. “The names are still being explored whether they are the victims or not. The investigators are difficult to find the other victims. On that account, people having a child or relatives becoming a victim of the sexual abuse, please make a report,” pleaded Hery. Related to the case, the suspect is detained at Bali Police detention center. However, so far he has not been examined because of waiting for his lawyer. “The suspect

THE BALI House of Representatives is thinking more and more seriously about the future of Bali, particularly in terms of learning from past experiences - both good and bad. Nyoman Adnyana, A PDI-P politician and member of the house, recently spoke of the need for Balinese people to think positively about the island and people of Bali, so that things can improve. “As a general principle, we need to love Bali if we want to maintain it and feel part of it…please love Bali. Bali needs to be maintained in a sustainable way that is also safe and peaceful. It is just that simple, no?” said this politician from Bangli. Adnyana also elaborated on the need for Balinese people to continuously learn how to deal with problems and enrich their insight so that they can compete locally and internationally. By working on their capacities and capabilities, Balinese people will not become marginal-

ized in their own land, nor will their capabilities be doubted. He added that it is important that Balinese people not just accept whatever comes along or give way to any new ideas that presents itself. “We need to be ready to face the toughest challenge, that is obviously the

influx of our fellow Indonesians as well as foreigners,” he said. “Currently, Bali is not only a tourist destination, but has also also become a crime destination,” said Adnyana who explained that this is in part due to the fact that criminals do not feel threatened in Bali. He also said that: “we cannot afford to think sectorally, or egoistically. We need to face conditions as they actually are and be aware of what may be demanded of us in the future”. House of Representatives, Denpasar native A.A. Ngurah Adhi Ardhana, stated that the greatest challenge that Bali now faces is how to deal with the new economic conditions of the AEC. According to Ardhana, Balinese people are not mentally prepared to face the situation. “As President Jokowi has said, the movement toward a revolution in our mentality (revolusi mental) is extremely important. This is not just a matter of creating new policies, there needs to be a real change in terms of people’s mindset, so that those things that are most important to us are preserved and protected,” said Ardhana. He then spoke about the fact that

tourism is Bali’s main source of income. Ardhana emphasized that the tourism industry needs to be run according to local values and also that this sector needs to be supported in the case of unexpected hindrances such as the recent gang clashes, natural disasters, or anything else that could pose a threat to this part of the economy. Balinese people, he said, must all work together to protect tourism and certainly not do anything that would aggravate tenuous situations. “Do not tarnish the image of Bali, instead we should be wise and inform others about how to protect what has become the source of our livelihood,” concluded Ardhana. Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Inarritu, Ridley Scott earn Directors Guild nods

LOS ANGELES - Mexico’s Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Britain’s Ridley Scott on Tuesday topped the list of nominees for the Directors Guild of America (DGA) award -- a strong indicator of Oscar hopes. Inarritu was nominated for revenge thriller “The Revenant” and Scott for space hit “The Martian,” about an astronaut stranded on Mars -- two films seen as top contenders for Academy Awards glory on February 28. This marks the fourth nomination for both directors by the DGA. Inarritu won the award last year for dark comedy “Birdman,” for which he also won an Oscar. LOS ANGELES — “Fifty Shades of Grey” is all tied up with “Pixels,” ‘’Jupiter Ascending” and “Paul Blart Mall Cop 2” for the most nominations at this year’s Golden Raspberry Awards celebrating the worst in cinema. The British national, born in Watford, England, on December 26, 1958, was arrested shortly after landing at the Ngurah Rai International Airport on January 9 at 12 p.m. local time. He arrived from Dong Mueang, Thailand, aboard AirAsia flight FD-396 to Denpasar. Using technology capable of tracking passenger movement, the officers were suspicious of Hakes when the aircraft landed. The ground officers closely observed him at the arrival corridor, immigration checkpoint, and during inspection in the custom area. At first, the officers manually checked Hakes’ luggage and then continued the process using X-ray scanning equipment, but they did not find any suspicious items. The officers’ suspicions led them to conduct a body check on Hakes.

They eventually found a clear plastic bag containing some parts of brown plants. Double-checking through a narcotic test revealed the presence of marijuana or hashish weighing three grams. As a result of his action, Hakes is believed to have violated Article 113, paragraph (1) of Law No. 35 of 2009 on narcotics. If found guilty, Hakes would have to face a minimum five years to a maximum 15 years of jail term in addition to a fine of between Rp1 billion and Rp10 billion.
