Large parts of the capital of Queensland state resembled a muddy lake, with an entire waterfront cafe among the debris wash-
ing down the Brisbane River, a torrent that has flooded 12,000 homes in the city of 2 million and left 118,000 buildings without power.
With 35 suburbs flooded, many parts of Brisbane looked more like Venice as residents used boats to move about flooded streets, where traffic signs peeped above the stagnant water. ‘Wonderful Indonesia’ New branding of national tourism Jakarta (Bali Post)—
Minister of Culture and Tourism, Jero Wacik, asserted that the new branding of the Indonesian tourism was ‘Wonderful Indonesia’ referring to the five criteria namely the nature, culture, people, food, and money. “We spell out the five criteria into wonderful nature, wonderful culture, wonderful people, wonderful food and wonderful value of money. The five criteria make our tourism excellence,” expected Wacik in Jakarta on Wednesday (Jan 12). According to the Minister of Culture and Tourism, the five criteria were intentionally taken from the experience when receiving the ‘The Best Island Destination in the World’ award from the Travel and Leisure Magazine in New York, USA not long ago. Such leading tourism magazine made a vote to the world tourists about where was the best tourist resort in the world and Bali was then voted as The Best Island in the World. The five criteria, said the Minister of Culture and Tourism, were owned by Indonesia so that the branding ‘Wonderful Indonesia’ was considered very appropriate. “President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has also approved the new branding of tourism,” he said while describing that the nature of Indonesia was the most beautiful in the world. It had an extensive sea, beautiful beaches, tropical forests, mountains, savannah, as
well as diverse flora and fauna. Wonderful culture, said Wacik, represented the diverse culture of Indonesia from Sabang to Merauke becoming a potential asset in developing the tourism. Similarly, the wonderful people conveyed the image of the Indonesian community that had been known in the world for their hospitality. “Ninety-nine percent of our society is smiley,” he said. Likewise, the wonderful food reflected the Indonesian food or culinary that had been renown around the globe. Culinary tourism was the main attraction, while the wonderful value of money made the Indonesia’s tourism have a high competitiveness. Piasan pavilion of Dalem Besikalung Temple crushed by altingia trees Tabanan, DenPost—
A building of piasan or pavilion reserved for priest in the Dalem Besikalung Temple, Utu Hamlet, Babahan Village, Penebel Subdistrict, collapsed and was damaged as crushed by falling altingia tree blown by a severe tornado on Wednesday (Jan 12). Such damage caused material losses of around IDR 40 million. The tornado hit the region of poultry farm at around 11:30 a.m. Local Time. A branch of altingia tree with the height of more than 10 meters and a diameter of about 1.5 meters broke and hit the piasan pavilion of the Dalem Temple until turning devastated. The condition forced the local residents to be unable to do much. “Based on information we received, the local community was going to carry out mutual help to clean up the ruins of the tree crashing against the piasan pavilion of the temple. Today (Wednesday), the local community leaders remain to gather their residents for carrying out mutual help in the temple,” said Chief of Penebel Police, Wibawa. On Wednesday, the tornado also threw a
large tree on the roadside of DenpasarGilimanuk section, precisely on the curve at the Jelijih Village, East Selemadeg. The incident happening around 12:00 a.m. disrupted the flow of traffic around the location because some tree branches crashed onto the road. “However, it did not affect any traffic congestion, and we from the police circle with the local communities immediately cleared up the tree branches blown by the tornado,” revealed the Chief of East Selemadeg Police, Sukarba. On the day before, the tornado also devastated a number of buildings at Baru Village, Marga Subdistrict. The natural upheavals occurring around 4:00 p.m., according to Chief of Marga Police, Surya Atmaja, damaged the roof tiles in the meeting hall of Subak Baru and resulted in losses of around IDR 1 million. Such an incident also engulfed the sawmilling factory owned by Putu Pastika, 35, where the asbestos roof was destroyed causing losses of around IDR 20 million. No Budget, Kuta car-free day halted Mangupura (Bali Post)—
The existence of car-free day program that had been running for seven weeks should be discontinued as unavailability of budget to meet the supporting facilities and infrastructure of its implementation. The decision seeming to suspend was conveyed by the Kuta Subdistrict Head Nyoman Suendi after leading the evaluation meeting of the car-free day with community leaders of Kuta together with police and military authorities. “Indeed, the meeting decided to discontinue the car-free day program. Nevertheless, we’re still going to carry out more in-depth review regarding to the implementation and issues on the facilities and infrastructure,” said Nyoman Suendi, Wednesday (Jan 12). According to him, the assessment would be re-submitted to the Kuta social institutions as well as community leaders to determine the sustainability of the car-free day in the future. Existence of this program was also complained by most community of Kuta. “We do not know exactly what it caused. To sum up, our community complained. To make the best solution meeting the expecta-
tion of both parties, we will make evaluation and consolidation on the implementation of the car-free day. If the consideration has been mature, then it might be resumed,” he said. Meanwhile, Chief of Kuta Police, Gede Ganefo, also recognized that existence of the car-free day was actually very good but in the implementation it was not approved by the Kuta community. “I do not know what to say. So, it is better the execution is suspended,” he said while adding that such car-free day should be evaluated and reviewed in order to be more mature in its implementation later on. Nevertheless, the impact of the car-free day program on Kuta tourism rejected by Kuta community was even enjoyed by tourists visiting Kuta. “Actually, the positive impact has been clearly discernible, where vagabonds and beggars have vanished from Kuta. And in terms of safety, the crime rate decreased because the case of pickpocket also has been almost disappeared,” he said. What unfortunate it is, because the carfree day program originally intended to create new tourist destination and minimize the crime rates happening in Kuta area, especially at night, was finally discontinued. Regents urged to muzzle illegal cafes Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Governor of Bali Made Mangku Pastika admitted to be deeply concerned about the appearance of dimly lit cafes growing like mushrooms in rainy season. It is ensured, most of those cafes ‘besieging’ Bali until the nook and cranny of villages were unlicensed. On that account, the former Chief of Bali Police urged the regents/mayor throughout Bali in order not to hesitate in ‘muzzling’ or closing those illegal cafes. “I hope the regents and mayor across Bali immediately take control against the venues of entertainment in the form of cafe setting to bloom in Bali. If they are having no license, simply close them,” said Mangku Pastika when receiving the Bhisama Enforcement Team of Bali Sacred Places on Wednesday (Jan 12). Mangku Pastika asserted that regency/ city government Bali needed not to fear for closing or dismantling the café buildings if they never issued a permit for such purposes. It was said that Bali Provincial Government was also ready to assist if the cafe owners did resistance. “We are ready to back up. We’ll be of service to lend a hand if there are any troubles. No matter how much the public reaction was, the negative impact on the existence of cafes had been felt,” he said while adding the existence of cafés, prima-
rily the illegal ones, was alleged to have an impact on the increasing cases of HIV/AIDS and criminal acts in Bali. Furthermore, Mangku Pastika admitted to be ready to make coordination with the regency/ city government in disciplining those dimly lit cafes. The coordination should be done considering that licensing on the cafes and the like lay on the authority of regency/city. “We do hope the regents and mayor throughout Bali are not afraid to eradicate the unlicensed dimly lit cafe. Do not be afraid of the pressures of the individuals backing up the existence of such cafes,” he stated. Meanwhile, the Head of Commission I in the Bali House, Made Arjaya, claimed to agree with Governor Mangku Pastika in order the unlicensed dimly lit cafes should be disciplined as soon as possible in maintaining the security of Bali. Nevertheless, he asked the disciplining of those cafes entirely posing the authority of the regency/city could be implemented selectively. In other words, the unlicensed cafes should be dealt with firmly. Meanwhile, the licensed cafes remained to be given guidance so as to operate according to the prevailing regulations. “For example, they should comply with the time limit of opening hours and the like,” he said. The noisy wind with drizzles in Bangli last Wednesday (12/1) caused a number of trees and electricity poles fell. It also hits Kintamani and damaged four residents’ houses at Sukawana Village, a shrine in Songan Village and residents houses at Selulung Village also banjar Paket. Seller Found Dead at Sulanyah Beach Suspected Killed or Suicide Singaraja (Bali Post) –
Residents of Sulanyah Village, Seririt, Buleleng, were shocked by the found body on the sea shore of the village’s beach last Wednesday (12/1) around 9 am without any pants on. It was identified to be Iswahyudi (37) a resident from Dusun Kauman, Pengastulan Village, Seririt. Information received stated that the body was first found by Putu Sudarma, a Sulanyah resident. At that time, Sudarma thought it was someone lying down and yet it was no longer breathing. It was then reported to other residents and forwarded to Seririt Police Sector. The police then investigated and identified the person to be Iswahyudi who works daily as a seller at Seririt Market. From the investigation, victim was suspected killed or commit-
ted suicide as swollen wound found on the right cheek, a scratched wound on the forehead also tangled marks on the neck. Meanwhile Iswahyudi’s motorcycle was found not far from location. Head of Buleleng Police Resort AKBP Yudhi Hartanto and Seririt Police Sector Head AKP Putu Ariana stated that for now it is thought Iswahyudi committed suicide as tangled marks are found also sperms came out of his genitals which usually happens when someone commit suicide by tangling themselves. About if there’s a possibility Iswahyudi was killed, Hartanto stated it is possible, “It could be murder. Baghdad bombs kill 2 at start of Biden visit Associated Press Writer
BAGHDAD – Vice President Joe Biden was in Iraq early Thursday for talks about the future of American troops in the country as they prepare to leave at year’s end, but three explosions in the capital killing two people demonstrated the lingering security challenges facing the country. Biden’s unannounced trip marks the first visit by a top U.S. official since Iraq approved a new Cabinet last month, breaking a political deadlock and jump-starting its stalled government after March’s inconclusive elections. “I’m here to help the Iraqis celebrate the progress they’ve made. They’ve formed a government and that’s a good thing. Biden told reporters before meeting with U.S. ambassador James F. Jeffrey and Gen. Lloyd Austin at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. “They have got a long way to go,” acknowledged Biden. Iraqi officials said they expected the issue of whether to keep some U.S. forces in Iraq beyond the Dec. 31 deadline would dominate Biden’s talks Thursday with President Jalal Talabani, Prime Minister Nouri alMaliki and Kurdish President Massoud Barzani. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to

Israel troops on alert after Lebanon govt falls Associated Press Writer
JERUSALEM – Israeli troops in the north were on alert Thursday over worries that the political turmoil in Lebanon might spill over into renewed violence on their shared border, following the collapse of the Lebanese government. The Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group and its allies threw the already volatile Lebanon into chaos on Wednesday by pulling out of the government and causing it to collapse. Hezbollah, which clashed with Israel in a monthlong war in 2006, bolted over the government continued cooperation with a U.N. tribunal investigating the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Hezbollah expects the tribunal to indict some of its members. It timed the dissolution of the government to coincide with the White House visit of the current prime minister, Hariri’s son Saad. A senior officer in Israel’s northern command said commanders were following events in Lebanon very closely for any sign Hezbollah might try to heat up the already jit-
tery northern border to deflect attention from the political turmoil. However, although troops have raised their level of alert, reserves have not been called up and no regular troops have been moved north from other areas, the officer said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to disclose military tactics. Retired general Yaakov Amidror told Army Radio that the prevailing Israeli assessment is that Hezbollah has no interest at this point in a bruising war with Israel. Both the militant group — and more important, Iran — prefer to keep Hezbollah primed to assault Israel in the event

U.S. agencies believe Iran’s nuclear efforts have slowed Reuters
WASHINGTON – U.S. intelligence agencies believe Iranian leaders have not yet decided to build a nuclear bomb, and some officials say recent problems affecting Tehran’s nuclear equipment and personnel have set back Iran’s nuclear program by two years or more. The latest assessments, based at least in part on Israeli intelligence, appear to have eased political pressures on Israeli and American leaders for a military strike against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, according to current and former of-
ficials familiar with the intelligence. These developments have also given the administration of President Barack Obama breathing room to pursue a two-pronged strategy of seeking greater diplomatic engagement with Tehran while also threatening increased economic sanctions, they said. Deadly attacks on Iranian nuclear scientists and a computer virus which allegedly infected control systems for Iran’s uranium enrichment equipment have likely slowed Iran’s nuclear progress, Israeli intelligence sources have said. That evaluation is shared by some, but not all, U.S. nuclear and intelligence experts. “We’ve got more
time than we thought,” said Gen. Michael Hayden, former director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Hayden said he now believes the “key decision point” for possible military action against Iran has been postponed until the “next (U.S.) presidential term” which would be after the 2012 election. At the same time, current and former U.S. national security and intelligence officials believe Iran is actively trying to assemble the infrastructure and know-how for atomic bomb production if and when political leaders decide to build one.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Hundreds dead in Brazil slides, search to continue Associated Press Writer
RIO DE JANEIRO – Driving rains sent tons of rusty red earth sliding into mountain towns, killing at least 257 people and leaving dozens more missing — lives rescuers hope to save when they resume searches Thursday. In the hardest-hit town of Teresopolis, where the local civil defense agency said at least 130 people died, hundreds of family members crowded around the town’s morgue Wednesday night waiting to identify bodies. Before rescue attempts were called off because of darkness, searchers used heavy machinery, shovels and bare hands trying to find survivors. How many were saved was not known. In one town, firefighters rescued a 25-year-old man who held his 6-month-old son for 15 hours until they were both pulled out alive. The man’s wife and mother-in-law were feared dead. Heavy rains and mudslides kill hundreds of people across Brazil each year, especially during the South American summer. The worst hit are the poor, whose rickety homes are often built on steep slopes with weak or no foundations. In Teresopolis, 40 miles (65 kilometers) north of Rio de Janeiro, deluges filled creeks and the overflows swept over already water-logged mountainsides. Brick and wooden shacks built on hillsides stripped of trees washed away in surging earth and water, leaving behind only a long trail of mud. The mountains saw 10
inches (26 centimeters) of rain fall in less than 24 hours. Floodwaters continued to gush down the mountains for hours after rainstorms ended Wednesday. Survivors waded through waist-high water, carrying what belongings they could, trying to reach higher ground. Many tried desperately to find relatives, though phone service was out in the region and many people were still missing hours after the rain stopped. “There are so many disappeared — and so many that will probably never be found,” said Angela Marina de Carvalho Silva, a resident of Teresopolis who feared she may have lost 15 relatives, including five nieces and nephews. “There was nothing we could do. It was hell,” she said in a telephone interview. Carvalho Silva took refuge in a neighbor’s house on high ground with her husband and daughter, and watched the torrential rain carry away cars, tree branches and animals and rip apart the homes of friends and family. “It’s over. There’s nothing. The water came down and swept everything away,” said her husband, Sidney Silva. In the neighboring mountain town of Nova Friburgo, at least 107 people died, according to an e-mailed statement from the Rio state civil defense
department. Among the dead were four firefighters who were helping in the rescue effort. Three other firefighters were listed as missing after their fire truck was hit by a mudslide. With the new disasters, more than 300 people have died since Christmas across the southeastern portion Brazil. President Dilma Rousseff signed a measure Wednesday sending $461 million to towns in Rio and Sao Paulo states that were damaged during the recent rains. The money will go to repairing infrastructure and preventing future disasters. The president planned to fly over the most severely damaged areas Thursday. The mayor of Teresopolis, Jorge Mario Sedlacek, decreed a state of emergency, calling the calamity “the worst to hit the town.” About 800 search-and-rescue workers from the state’s civil defense department and firefighters dug for survivors. In neighboring Petropolis, 20 people were confirmed dead by the Rio state civil defense department. The death toll in the region was expected to rise as firefighters reached remote valleys and steep mountainsides where neighborhoods were destroyed, Teresopolis’s mayor said. About 1,000 people there were left homeless.

JAKARTA - The government is mulling setting up an independent team to monitor and evaluate the realization of Garuda Indonesia‘s plan to raise up to US$350 million through an initial public offering (IPO) this year. “So far, an independent evaluating committee has been formed to monitor Krakatau Steel`s (IPO). Right now we are considering whether or not it (the committee) is suitable for Garuda`s IPO,” State Enterprises Minister Mustafa Abubakar said at the presidential palace here on Wednesday. The committee had proven effective to monitor the state-owned steel maker‘s IPO, he said. He expressed hope such a committee could be set up to supervise the national flag carrier‘s IPO. “It is likely we will order the formation of such an independent team to monitor Garuda`s IPO,” he said. He said the state enterprises ministry, along with other relevant agencies were still discussing preparations for Garuda‘s IPO. One of the issues discussed was the price of shares offered in the IPO. Garuda is expected to sell 30 percent of its shares through the IPO scheduled for February 11, 2011. To conduct the IPO, Garuda has appointed PT Danareksa Sekuritas, PT Bahana Securities, and PT Mandiri Sekuritas as domestic underwriters, and UBS and Citibank as foreign underwriters. Garuda booked a net profit of Rp194 billion in the year ended September 30, 2010.

JAKARTA - Law and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar said there was a big syndicate involved in the alleged tax fraud case of former tax official Gayus Tambunan. “There has been progress in the investigations and now we know that a big syndicate is involved,” the minister said when met at the presidential office complex here on Wednesday. He said this was one of the results of a closed-door meeting between his ministry‘s officials and the team
investigating the case at his office. He declined to explain further regarding the syndicate, adding the investigation could fail if he spoke too much about it to the public. “Who was behind all this. I would not name persons as it could obstruct the investigation,” he said.
Gayus is suspected of being involved in a tax fraud conspiracy. He has recently drawn public attention after he was found to have used a forged passport to visit several countries in September while he was supposed to be in prison. He shocked the public in November when he was found watching an international tennis match in Bali also while he was officially an inmate of the Mobile Briagde (Brimob) Headquarters‘ detention center.
The police have arrested three people allegedly involved in forging the passport for Gayus. “We have arrested three people and are still continuing the investigation into their role in the passport issuance,” chief of the National Police intelligence, Commissioner General Ito Sumardi, said here on Wednesday. The three who were arrested are civilians who have worked as passport brokers. Ito declined to answer when asked if an African citizen was
linked to the syndicate. Gayus was in Macau on September 22-24 and Kuala Lumpur and Singapore from September 30 before returning home on October 2. The police found that the passport used by Gayus bearing fake name Sony Laksono but having the picture of Gayus wearing a wig to disguise himself was initially intended for a five-year old baby named Margaretha. Gayus confessed he got the passport from a broker.

jured in toppled houses, but they have been taken care at a local Public Health Center,” he said. The whirlwind also toppled some trees in the villages but already removed by officers are the cleaning service. The BPBD of Bondowoso has distributed food supplies to the whirlwind victims in the four villages since Wednesday evening. “Today we have distributed 2.5 tons of rice to the victims,” Abdurrahman said.

Perhaps it will be done partially or perhaps some have already been summoned,” he said. He declined talking about cabinet reshuffle because it was the president‘s prerogative. UKP4 chief Kuntoro Mangkusubroto said earlier that he planned to submit his report on the performance of ministries and state institutions on Wednesday. The head of Bali Cultural Department, Ketut Suastika, said that the 2011 FFDB is open for public so anyone can join the festival. It is different from the similar event last year where only the participants from Bali who can took part. So, it can be said a real birthday. For example, if one was born on Wednesday (day) Kliwon (fiveday week) Dungulan (one of thirty wukus), he will celebrate his otonan on the same day as above. Another difference between the two is the dating system, particularly on the starting point of new date. If the Gregorian starts at 00:01, the wuku at the sunrise. Sometimes, there is also misunder-
standing among some Balinese to determine the day of a baby that was born at dawn, let’s say on Wednesday Kliwon Dungulan at 04:00. Based on Gregorian calendar, the day and date have belonged to the next (Thursday) and will become its ‘birth date’ later. However, its otonan should not follow this calendar system, but as the baby was born at 04:00, it should belong to Wednesday (Buda) based on the wuku system. This misdating may often inflict mistakes in determining his otonan day and its character does not accord with the Hindu astrology. This then needs something like ritual adjustment in Hindu belief to the appropriate day through an exorcism rite as mentioned in palm-leaf manuscript that commonly used as reference like Wrehaspati Kalpa. Otonan in Balinese tradition is actually a private and comprehensive ritual that only celebrated by the family internally. By certain kinds of oblation, the ritual is intended for one’s inner and outer self along with his kanda empat or four companions that are believed to accompany him since birth to the end of lifetime and even the period after death.
They are expressed in personification as amniotic fluid, vernix cascosa, the afterbirth and the blood. In Hindu belief, the names of the four companions will change in keeping with the increasing age of the human self and so are the places where they indwell. The four will loyally keep the self in this world. If ‘spiritual’ communication and empowerment run well among the five, one will never feel fearful wherever he goes and can do healing. As loyal and eternal companions, too, they will accompany the self around the clock. By doing this, they will know every single deed of the self during its interaction with corporeal body. After death, on facing the court of Yama, no facts can be hidden or no lies can be told, as the four companions will deliver the true witness. In essence, otonan is an immensely important celebration for the Hindus. It constitutes right moment to reorganize, encourage the relationship of human self with the four integrated companions as the otonan contains two dimensional aspects, both sekala (visible) and niskala (invisible). By this, it is also expected to promote harmony between the body with soul and finally reach eternal bliss here and after. (BTN/*)

SPICE PASTE: 5 red chilies, seeded and chopped 3 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 7 shallots, peeled and chopped 5 cm fresh turmeric, peeled and chopped 5 cm ginger, peeled and chopped 4 candlenuts 1 ½ tsp coriander ½ tsp dried shrimp paste toasted 1 sml tomato, peeled and seeded 2 tbsp oil 1 ½ tbsp tamarind pulp 1 salam leaf 1 lemon grass, bruised PREPARATION: Prepare spice paste by grinding or blending all ingredients except oil, tamarind, salam leaf and lemongrass. Heat oil, add spice paste and all other ingredients. Cook over moderate heat for about 5 minutes, then cool. Wash lobsters and leave whole. Bring water to the boil, add lobsters and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove lobsters, plunge in iced water for 1 minutes, then drain and remove meat. Return shells to the pot of water, keeping lobster meat aside. Add spice paste, lemongrass, lime leaves and vinegar to the water with the shells and simmer until 4 cups of stock remain. Add coconut milk and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain stock and return to pan. Add lobster and simmer for 1 minute. Serve garnished with fried shallots and accompanied by white rice.

WASHINGTON – The World Bank has warned that the global economy could return to the dark days of the 2008 crisis, with slowing growth and rising commodity prices. After the recession in 2009 and the 2010 rebound, the multilateral institution said Wednesday, 2011 is expected to be a year of deceleration. In its latest projections, the bank estimates global growth of 3.3 percent this year following a 3.9 percent rate in 2010. Emerging and developing countries were expected to expand 6.0 percent, down from a 7.0 percent pace in 2010, the bank said in its latest Global Economic Prospects report. But that was more than double the 2.4 percent rate expected to be clocked by high-income countries this year, slowing from a 2.8 percent rate in 2010. Growth in both high-income and developing countries, however, was expected to pick up toward mid2011, and “settling at rates close to their longer-run potential.” For 2012, growth in the global economy was seen rising at a 3.6 percent rate. High-income countries were expected to expand by 2.7 percent and developing countries would speed up just a notch, to 6.1 percent. Still, the overall pace of growth is too weak to give the recovery solid
traction, the World Bank said. “Unfortunately these growth rates are unlikely to be fast enough to eliminate unemployment and slack in the hardest-hit economies and economic sectors.” In addition, “serious tensions and pitfalls persist in the global economy, which in the short run could derail the recovery to differing degrees,” it warned. Threats that could derail the recovery include the eurozone financial market crisis, volatile capital flows and the rising prices of commodities, including food and fuel, the 187-nation institution said. The World Bank expressed particular concern about rising commodity prices, including food and fuel, driven by loose monetary policies in the developed countries and solid demand in the emerging economies. “Although real food prices in most developing countries have not increased as much as those measured in US dollars, they have risen sharply in some poor countries,” the World Bank said. “And if international prices continue to rise, affordability issues and poverty impacts could intensify.”
“We are very concerned about the rise in the food prices... We see some similarities with the situation in 2008, just before the financial crisis,” Hans Timmer, the bank’s director of development prospects, said at a news conference. In 2008, oil prices surged above $147 a barrel in July, then fell to nearly $30 six months later. Currently around $92 in New York, oil prices are above the bank’s estimate of $85 a barrel on average in 2011, compared with $79 in 2010. Commodity prices excluding oil were expected to dip 0.1 percent in dollar terms. The 2008 scenario of soaring food and oil prices amid slowing growth, which had revived the word “stagflation,” would likely be avoided, the World Bank said, as long as supply follows the rhythm of demand. In 2008, a powerful surge in commodity prices was abruptly snuffed out by the bankruptcy of US investment bank Lehman Brothers in September. Asked how conditions would be different this time, the economist said he hoped that supplies would respond to demand.

NEW YORK - The bleakest year in foreclosure crisis has only just begun. Lenders are poised to take back more homes this year than any other since the U.S. housing meltdown began in 2006. About 5 million borrowers are at least two months behind on their mortgages and more will miss payments as they struggle with job losses and loans worth more than their home’s value, industry analysts forecast. “2011 is going to be the peak,” said Rick Sharga, a senior vice president at foreclosure tracker RealtyTrac Inc. The outlook comes after banks repossessed more than 1 million homes in 2010, RealtyTrac said Thursday. That marked the highest annual tally of properties lost to foreclosure on records dating back to 2005. One in 45 U.S. households received a foreclosure filing last year, or a record high of 2.9 million homes. That’s up 1.67 percent from 2009. For December, 257,747 U.S. homes received at least one foreclosure-related notice. That was the lowest monthly total in 30 months. The number of notices fell 1.8 percent from November and 26.3 percent from December 2009, RealtyTrac said. The pace slowed in the final two months of 2010 as banks reviewed their foreclosure processes after allegations surfaced in September that evictions were handled improperly. Under increased scrutiny by the government, lenders temporarily halted taking actions against borrowers severely behind on their payments. However, most banks have since resumed their eviction processes, and the first quarter will likely show a rebound in foreclosure activity, Sharga said. Foreclosures are expected to remain elevated through the year as homeowners contend
with stubbornly high unemployment, tougher credit standards for refinancing and falling home values. Sharga said he expects prices to dip another 5 percent nationally before finally bottoming out. The decline will push more borrowers underwater on their mortgages. Already, about one in five homeowners with a mortgage owe more than their home is worth. The pain likely will be the most acute in states that have already been hit hard. That includes former housing boom states Nevada, Arizona, Florida and California, along with states that are suffering most from the economic downturn, including Michigan and Illinois. Nevada posted the highest foreclosure rate in 2010 for the fourth straight year, despite a 5 percent decline in activity from the year before. One in every 11 households received a foreclosure filing last year in the state. In December, foreclosure activity increased 18 percent from November with a 71 percent spike in bank repossessions. Arizona and California also showed sharp December increases in the number of homes banks took back, at 52 percent and 47 percent, respectively. Arizona, along with Florida, finished the year at No. 2 and No. 3 for the highest foreclosure rates. One in every 17 Arizona households got a foreclosure filing last year, while one in 18 received a notice in Florida. California, Utah, Georgia, Michigan, Idaho, Illinois and Colorado rounded out the top ten states with the highest foreclosure rates. More than half of the country’s foreclosure activity came out of five states in 2010: California, Florida, Arizona, Illinois and Michigan. Together, these states recorded almost 1.5 million households receiving a filing, despite yearover-year decreases in California, Florida and Arizona.

BURBANK, Calif. – Conan O’Brien says he got a phone call from David Letterman over the holidays. The CBS host wanted to make sure a year of late-night TV turmoil hadn’t created a rift between them. O’Brien told reporters Wednesday that he and Letterman have “always been good. I said he didn’t owe me a phone call, but I appreciated it.” O’Brien wouldn’t be so receptive to a call from Jay Leno, who preceded and replaced him as “Tonight” show host. He says the reason is no mystery, noting, “We all know the story.” O’Brien said the experience of losing the “Tonight” show left him and his staff feeling like a band of pirates that stuck together through hard times. It’s a dynamic he believes makes the show stronger. O’Brien’s new TBS show, called “Conan,” began in November. He said the past year’s upheaval has left him more willing to take chances onstage. “I’m very appreciative,” he said. “There’s nothing like walking away from
the ‘Tonight’ show that makes you appreciative of being on the air and having a TV show. I think that feeling is coming through.” O’Brien’s show and “Lopez Tonight,” which follows it on TBS’ lineup, both have an audience with an average age of 33, the youngest among the late-night talk shows. “I like performing for children,” he said. “I have a 7-year-old and a 5-year-old. That’s a workout. Making them laugh brings me a lot of joy.” He said his comedy has an inherent silliness that a younger audience may appreciate. Reaching a young audience is usually a strength in television, but NBC was concerned that O’Brien wasn’t expanding his audience beyond that. He acknowledged some sadness at no longer being a part of NBC, and being disconnected with some people he spent a lot of time with. The Monday after his last “Tonight” show, he called his assistant so they could meet to discuss some business. She wondered: “Where?” So they met in a store that sells pies. “There’s a whole body of work that I feel a little detached from,” he said.

Study: Penguin tracking bands hurt the seabirds Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON – Some scientists studying penguins may be inadvertently harming them with the metal bands they use to keep track of the tuxedo-clad seabirds, a new study says. The survival rate of King penguins with metal bands on their flippers was 44 percent lower than those without bands and banded birds produced far fewer chicks, according to new research published Wednesday in the journal Nature. The theory is that the metal bands — either aluminum or stainless steel — increase drag on the penguins when they swim, making them work harder, the study’s authors said. Author Yvon Le Maho of the University of Strasbourg in France, said the banded penguins looked haggard, appearing older than their actual age. Consequently, studies that use banded penguins — including ones about the effects of global warming on the seabirds — may be inaccurate, mixing up other changes in penguin life with the effects from banding, said Le Maho and colleague Claire Saraux. Le Maho said this is the first study showing a long-term harm from
banding penguins. “There is an ethical question: should we continue” with banding penguins? Le Maho asked. The very act of studying the birds is harming them, he said. The researchers followed 50 already banded adult penguins and 50 without bands for 10 years, tracking them with under-the-skin transponders. Thirty-six percent of the non-banded seabirds survived for 10 years, compared to only 20 percent of the band-wearing birds. In general, penguins live about 20 years. King penguins — among the largest penguins at 3-feet tall — can live even longer, Le Maho said. The no-band penguins had 80 chicks, while the banded seabirds produced 47 chicks, a 41 percent drop.
The penguins were studied on a French island in the Indian Ocean between Africa and Antarctica. Penguin researchers have long debated the use of bands. The bands weigh just under an ounce and are a bit more than an inch wide, Saraux said. One prominent American penguin researcher, P. Dee Boersma of the University of Washington, has been banding another kind of penguin for 28 years and will continue. “Their study shows that the bands they used on King penguins were a problem,” Boersma, who studies Magellenic penguins, wrote in an email. “You don’t want to say all flipper bands are terrible because the evidence is not there.” Boersma said the difference in species matters. She pointed to a 14-year study she did that showed that male Magellenic penguins with two bands survived the same as unbanded penguins, but that study did show that double-banded females had a lower survival rate. Le Maho said he sees no reason why bands would harm some penguin species but not others.

MADRID – Lionel Messi scored three goals in his first game since winning his second straight FIFA player of the year award, and Barcelona routed second-division leader Betis 5-0 Wednesday night in the first leg of the Copa del Rey quarterfinals to tie its unbeaten streak record at 27 games. Messi scored in the 44th, 64th and 73rd minutes for his third hat trick of the season. Pedro Rodriguez added a goal in the 76th minute, and Seydou Keita headed in Andres Iniesta’s flick in the 83rd. Messi won the Golden Ball, with Iniesta second and Xavi Hernandez third as Barcelona provided all the finalists for Monday’s announcement by FIFA. Messi has 31 goals in 27 games for Barcelona this season. LOS ANGELES – The improving Los Angeles Clippers surprised star-studded Miami, downing the Heat 111-105 to snap the Heat’s 13-game road winning streak. Rookie forward Blake Griffin had 24 points and 14 rebounds for the Clippers, who led most of the way and fended off Miami’s late challenge to claim just their 13th victory of the NBA season. Eric Gordon chipped in 26 points and Baron Davis had 20 points with nine assists for the Clippers, who were serenaded by chants of “Beat the Heat” by their ecstatic fans as the clock ticked down. Miami’s vaunted star trio of Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh came through — Wade scoring 31 points, James 27 and Bosh 26. But too little input from their supporting cast doomed the Heat’s chance of matching the club record of 14 straight victories on the road as they lost for just the second time in 23 contests. Klitschko trainer hopes Haye clash can still happen Reuters
WASHINGTON – Wladimir Klitschko’s trainer hopes a fight between the bruising Ukrainian and Britain’s WBA heavyweight champion David Haye still takes place even though talks for a July fight fell apart last week. “I would like to see it,” Klitschko trainer Emanuel Steward told Reuters on Tuesday. “David is a very talented fighter. I like him. I needle him a lot back and forth because he likes to do the media hype, but I respect him a lot.” The two fighters had agreed to terms for a July 2 fight but Haye then backed out when he refused to allow Klitschko a fight with Britain’s Dereck Chisora on April 30, a bout rescheduled from December because of a Klitschko injury. Steward says Klitschko (55-3, 49 KOs), whose last bout was a 10th-round stoppage of Samuel Peter in September, wanted an interim bout to stay busy ahead of Haye (25-1, 23 KOs). He also said Klitschko’s reluctance to wait until July for his next
fight was partly founded on the fact that Haye pulled out two weeks before a previously scheduled fight between the two in 2009 citing a back injury. Klitschko, the WBO, IBF and IBO heavyweight champion, has no faith in Haye’s level of commitment, Steward said. Haye’s camp expressed doubt that Klitschko, who fought twice in 2010 and once in 2009, would be ready to fight Haye so soon after an April fight, but Steward insisted that “Wladimir says he intends to be ready to fight on July 2.” Klitschko must first deal with Chisora, who is unbeaten in 14 fights as a professional, 44 fewer than the Ukrainian. But despite less experience, Steward said a young and confident Chisora could pose problems for Klitschko. “To me, the confidence, the ambition, the burning desire of a fighter is a lot more dangerous to me than that of an experienced fighter,” said Steward. “I’ve always felt that Chisora was a tough fight and I’m really not that super excited about it.”

Ducati unveils new MotoGP bike DUCATI has unveiled its new GP11 MotoGP contender, the bike with which Valentino Rossi will make his debut for the Italian team. The team’s technical chief Filippo Preziosi hinted that Ducati had significant development plans for the new bike, and said it should address the issues that prevented a title challenge in 2010.

Ferrari targets ‘perfect’ 2011 season FERRARI team boss Stefano Domenicali says the Italian squad is aiming to enjoy a “perfect” 2011 season in order to clinch both titles. The Maranello-based squad failed to win any titles in 2010, despite Fernando Alonso arriving as favourite in the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi. In the end Alonso had a disastrous race and finished as championship runner-up to Red Bull rival Sebastian Vettel. Ferrari finished in third place in the constructors’ standings. Domenicali admitted on Wednesday the team must aim for a flawless season in order to beat the opposition this year. “For 2011 our goals is very clear, that we are aiming to win both the titles, constructors’ and drivers’ titles, this must be the goal of our team,” Domenicali told reporters during Ferrari’s winter retreat in the Dolomites. “And so the expectations, that of being able to have a car competitive from the start, a reliable car, a strong car, and I have to say that we’ve seen this last year. “If you’re not perfect within such a competitive environment, with opponents that are so strong with teams, which also varied numerically, then it becomes difficult to win. “So the goal is that of being better than last year, especially in terms of performance, with a car which must be competitive from the start, it must be reliable - as it was reliable last year – but improved where possible because with every reliability you make a breakthrough, and we must be perfect in interpreting the
events which take place during races, because also from this point of view we do not make mistakes.” The Italian, who admitted he considered stepping down after the Abu Dhabi debacle, said his motivation for the season ahead is as high as always, and vowed to move on from the disappointment of 2010. “I feel well,” said Domenicali. “As far as my motivation is concerned, I can guarantee you that the entire team is positive-minded. We are approaching a new season with enthusiasm, the right enthusiasm, and I think that it is fundamental, especially at the start, to start by putting aside – from a psychological point of view – by putting aside the last race in Abu Dhabi. “It’s like a tennis player who does a bad match, or someone who shoots a penalty and makes a mistake, you go back to, you know, on the field,
you mustn’t have a trembling hand or a trembling foot. You have to go back in and play. “So on my part, what I did and what I’m going to do is to work on some psychological (aspects), because from a technical point of view we have some engineers who know what they have to do, but they have to show it of course with facts. From our point of view we have to set up a clean team, clean in terms of having (no) fears.” The team has undergone a reshuffle of its track management personnel, and Domenicali is confident the changes will pay off and will make the team stronger. “As we have said last week, we wanted a change, the track (operation) is going to be headed by of Mr Fry, who is going to be the person who has to take the decisions of the management of the drivers on the race track in terms of strategies,” he said.
“The GP11 Ducati will start in Sepang [testing] as ‘step zero’,” he said. “The engine has an evolution in that the goal has been to have a flatter torque curve. The aerodynamics are very similar those you saw in Valencia. “We’ve worked on decreasing drag, increasing top speed and helping the fuel consumption. The bodywork has been based around Nicky Hayden [who is broader across the shoulders than Rossi] for his top speed. Also we’ve concentrated on having less lift on the front.” Ducati introduced winglets to the front of the GP10 at the Sachsenring last July after it was found that the front was only just in contact with the ground at the top end of the speed range after 180mph, and the GP11 features an evolution of that
design. As AUTOSPORT reported yesterday, the bike will have a smaller 42mm set of front forks compared to the stiffer 48mm forks that contributed to a series of high-speed falls for Hayden and Casey Stoner last season. The carbon fibre ‘airbox/chassis’ will have more flex in it together with the triple clamps to aid the feel of the front when leaned over. “We have many things to test in Sepang but first the team will go with two bikes to Jerez on January 17, 18 and 19 with Franco Battaini and Vito Guareschi so we can get to Sepang with more of an understanding,” Preziosi added. Italian graphics and helmet design guru Aldo Drudi has followed Valentino Rossi over to Ducati, and has designed the team’s new livery.
