“Star Wars” enters “grittier” new chapter with “Rogue One” premiere
LOS ANGELES - With a new band of rebels and a highstakes journey, “Star Wars” ushered in a new chapter on Saturday by bringing a galaxy far, far away to the heart of Hollywood for the “Rogue One” premiere. Reuters on the red carpet, which featured a life-size Rebel Alliance X-Wing jet. “Rogue One”, in theaters on Dec. 16, follows Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), the daughter of a weapons specialist who has been in hiding under another name for years. Her fate is quickly tied in with Rebel Alliance pilot Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna, and Imperial pilot Bodhi Rook, played by Riz Ahmed, who defects from the dark side. The trio band together with more rebels to fight the evil Darth Vader’s plans for intergalactic domination. Jones described Erso as “a bit of a tomboy”, saying she had prepare intensely for the role’s physical demands. “I had to be in the gym for far too long, which I have to say is not enjoyable. But for the sake of ‘Star Wars’, I was prepared to do it,” she said. The movie explores the journey preceding the events that launched George Lucas’ intergalactic saga with 1977’s “Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope”. ISTANBUL — Turkey’s interior ministry says 235 people have been detained in anti-terrorism operations across the nation. The state-run Anadolu Agency quoted the ministry as saying 235 people in 11 cities were arrested on terrorism-related charges and for spreading terrorist propaganda on social media.
The report did not specify the name of the organization targeted or whether the individuals rounded up were suspected of involvement in a Saturday night attack in Istanbul. Turkey declared a national day of mourning and paid tribute to the dead Sunday after two bombings in Istanbul killed 38 people and wounded 155 others near a soccer stadium. The carnage was claimed by a Turkey-based Kurdish militant group. The Kurdistan Freedom Falcons, or TAK, said two of its members had sacrificed their lives in the Saturday night attack that targeted security forces outside the Besiktas stadium shortly after the conclusion of a match. “Two of our comrades were heroically martyred in the attack,” according to a statement posted on TAK’s website.
It described the blasts as reprisal for state violence in the southeast and the ongoing imprisonment of Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK. TAK is considered by authorities as a PKK offshoot. The twin car-and-suicide bombings near the stadium enraged top officials, including President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who vowed to hunt down the perpetrators. The attack was the latest large-scale assault to traumatize a nation confronting an array of security threats. Turkey is a NATO member and a partner in the U.S.-led war against the Islamic State group. The attack targeted police officers, killing 30 of them along with seven civilians and an unidentified person, Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu told reporters. He
said 13 people had been arrested in connection with the “terrorist” act. In an address at a funeral for the slain police officers before TAK’s statement was released, a furious Soylu condemned Kurdish rebels and their allies in the West, referring to the PKK as “animals.” “Have you accomplished anything beyond being the servants, pawns and hit men of certain dark forces, of your dark Western partners?” he asked. Bus passengers at Ubung Terminal decline
SINCE 2002 there has been a steady change in the way people use transport services. Wheras in the past, people tended to travel by bus when visiting locations outside their region, however now people tend more and more towards traveling by other means, such as by private car, travel services or airplane. Natural the frenzied atmosphere of bus terminals has also
changed, and Ubung terminal in Norht Denpasar is no excep-
tion. Previously, Ubung terminal was classified as type A, but since Mengwi terminal stated operating, Ubung was downgraded to type B. The change in status has had no significant impact on activity at the ter-

minal and interprovincial city buses (AKAP) still operate out of Ubung Terminal, so passengers wanting to use public transport to travel outside of Bali can still depart from Ubung terminal. Its status was downgraded in accordance with Presidential Decree No.54/2011. Unit Chief of the Ubung Terminal, A.A. Eka Putra, when met at his office on Friday (Dec. 9) confirmed that Ubing terminal is not as busy as it was a few years ago. There are less and less passengers and so the atmosphere is increasingly quite, expect during the week following Lebaren, when large large numbers of people flow through Ubung as they return to Bali from Java. “ On normal days, there are very few passengers” he said. Today there are about 40 bus companies that operate at Ubung with an average of 50 buses departing daily for inter-provincial city transportation (AKAP) carrying around 1,000 passengers. IN 2014, there were 1,085 people using 54 buses.
Meanwhile, the other terminals in Denpasar face more severe conditions, four passenger terminals and 1 cargo terminal are concerned about the lack of passengers and one has been been transformed into a market. Head of the Denpasar Transportation Agency, I Gede Astika, said that Denpasar’s 4 passenger terminals are located at Ubung, Kereneng, Wangaya and Tegal. Another terminal on Jalan Gunung Agung has been transformed into a market. Similarly, Wangaya terminal has also been functioning as a market, though it still retains its status as a terminal. Many terminals are dormant, said Astika, because of the decline in public transport users. Not more than 3 percent of Denpasar’s population uses these services. One of the main reasons for this, explained Astika is that more people now own motorcycles. “Many people having started using private transport, especially motorcycles” he said. (ara)
Head of the Badung Transportation and Infocom Agency, I Wayan Weda Dharmaja, stated that not all AKAP buses are mandated to drop passengers off at the 12 hectare space of Mengwi terminal, it depends on their route permits.. “There are AKAP buses that have a permit to operate from Ubun and Padangabi. So, passengers should be dropped off according to the route permit of the bus. This does not have to be Mengwi, unless their route permit states that they have to operate form Mengwi”, he explained. According to Weda, before heading to the terminal appropriate to their route permit, every AKAP bus has to stop at Mengwi terminal anyway. “The buses must enter Mengwi terminal first. After that, they can resume their journey to Ubung or Padangbai”, said Weda. Apart from these issues, the central government’s management of Mengwi terminal also remains unclear given the role that Ubung continues to play, and has been problematic for a number of employees. The government of Badung has provided 61 personnel for the Mengwi terminal, including
security guards, cleaning services and a temple priest, but the central government has not provided certainty about when the terminal management will be taken over. Meanwhile, the government of Badung did not allocate the usual IDR 2 billion for the operating budget for Mengwi terminal for 2017. “I heard there has not been a decision about the central government managing Mengwi terminal, but the local government (of Badung—Ed) has not allocated any operating budget for the terminal in 2017. If this is true, we do not know about our fate” said cleaning service officer, Ketut Astiti, when met at the terminal. Astiti said he was quite alarmed to hear of such conditions as his livelihood depends on this. The local government s therefore expected to find a way to deal with the uncertain policy. “Me, along with 27 other colleagues, we are paid by the government of Badung pursuant to the district minimum wage. However, with the current central government policy,we are afraid of layoffs. Hopefully, there is a solution to this problem”, she concluded. (kmb27)

Inter-provincial city bus reluctant to stop at Mengwi terminal
MANGUPURA - Mengwi terminal is not functioning optimally. Since it was inaugurated in 2011, this type-A terminal remains dormant. A number of inter-provincial city buses (AKAP) drop off their passengers on the road in front of the Mengwi terminal, instead of inside the terminal. Not disorderly condition of bus services at Mengwi terminal was also recognized by Ngurah Sukarma, a public transport driver at the terminal on Saturday (Dec. 10). Although Mengwi terminal has been designated as a type-A terminal in order to relieve traffic congestion in the city, a lot of interprovincial city transportations still do not comply with the rules and continue to drop off passengers at the Ubung terminal. “The government program must be consistent. If the buses are allowed to pass (to Ubung terminal— Ed), it will have an impact on us, in fact quite a big impact on drivers”, he complained. Sukarma explained that because both Mengwi and Ubung terminals are functional, it makes it easy for AKAP drivers to cheat. Such behavior must be dealt with
decisively, so as not to harm public transportation operating at Mengwi terminal. “This requires firm government action. In other words, there is a lack of clarity about Ubung and Mengwi terminals. If the government takes decisive action, there wil not be a problem”, he said. However, if the current condition persists, with AKAP buses still using Ubung terminal by and dropping passengers off on the side of the road, this will obviously disrupt public transport operating at Mengwi. The central government’s take-over of Mengwi terminal should mean that the problems being faced today can be resolved. “Hopefully, once Megwi terminal is taken over by the central government, things will improve”, he said with hope, adding that there are 70 commercial vehicles that rely on Mengwi terminal. Previously, the Minister of Transportation, Budi Karya, requested that Bali’s provincial government and other relevant agencies to crack down on buses that do not comply with the rules and drop passengers of on the road
at Ubung Terminal. Budi Karya also considers that Mengwi terminal is not functioning properly because buses operating from Ubung Terminal do not want to move to Mengwi terminal. On that account, the Ministry of Transportation has appealed to the government of Bali to enforce the law. “We asked that the governor implement law enforcement. What’s at Ubung should be moved to Mengwi. I think there must be a great willingness on the part of the Municipality of Denpasar to remove the transport services currently operating at Ubung as it will relieve traffic congestion in Denpasar. Another option is to make Ubung into a logistics warehouse, so that all the logistics are placed here. Ultimately, the function can run well”, he explained. The Ministry of Transportation will also make an effort to improve the traffic associated with freights or weighbridges. “Although a request has been submitted to the central government, we ask that the province work to resolve the problem of the inter-provincial buses unwillingness to be relocated from Ubung to Mengwi”, he said.

In fossil rarity, tumor found in 255-millionyear-old beast
WASHINGTON - Scientists examining the jawbone of a saber-toothed, mammal-like beast that prowled Tanzania 255 million years ago have come across a remarkable fossil rarity: one of the oldest-known tumors. University of Washington researchers on Thursday described a benign tumor composed of miniature tooth-like structures they found embedded next to the root of the creature’s enlarged canine tooth while studying an unrelated aspect of the jaw. The animal was a member of an extinct group of four-legged carnivores called gorgonopsians that mixed mammal-like and reptilelike traits. They reached up to 10 feet (3 meters) long and appeared early in the evolutionary lineage that led to mammals. The jawbone came from one of the smaller gorgonopsian species.
Gorgonopsians were among the top predators of their time, thriving from about 270 million to 252 million years ago when they were wiped out during Earth’s worst mass extinction at the end of the Permian Period. Their demise came roughly 20 million years before the first dinosaurs. When the researchers sliced into the mandible fossil from Tanzania’s Ruhuhu Valley, they found a benign dental tumor called a compound odontoma that grows within the gums or other jaw soft tissues. When people get one, surgery is sometimes used to remove it. “There was no indication that
there was a tumor in this jaw. It looked normal before we cut it open. It was pure luck that we found the tumor,” University of Washington paleobiologist Megan Whitney said. Until now, this type of tumor was known only in mammals, including some Ice Age fossils tens of thousands of years old. The new discovery shows such a tumor existed in mammal ancestors that lived tens of millions of years before the first mammals appeared. Tumors, malignant and benign, typically involve soft tissue, and rarely fossilize. “Ancient tumors generally need to affect hard parts such as bones and teeth in order to be preserved in the fossil record,” University of Washington paleobiologist Christian Sidor added. Jehem village develops due to platform of Melangit River
TOURISM in Jehem village, Tembuku, Bangli, has started to be developed. One of the attractions is a platform overlooking the Melangit River. Pictures form the platform went viral on social media sites when some youth from the village uploaded pictures of the site, some time ago. “Some creative young people from Jehem village, made some gazebos next to the Melangit River platform” explained Hani Trivena, Chief of the Tourism Field Research Committee doing research on the tourism potential of Jehem village this year. Jehem village consists of several hamlets, including Antugan, Tam-
bahan Kelod and Jehem Kaja that are the focus of the research being conducted by the Bali International Tourism College (STPBI). Antugan hamlet has started to popularize lawar biu batu , a local delicacy made from young stone bananas. “We are also encouraging people to make stone banana tea” she added.
Visitors can also visit the rainbow cave as it is known, that is located under the platform and there is also a pretty good trekking trail. “The hidden canyon is beautiful but road access is still poor”, said Trivena. In Jehem Kaja there is cooperative that produces incense and they plan to make this into another tourist attraction, along with the natural beauty of the Antugan hamlet. Jehem Kaja is also home to the Jehem Cliff Temple previously separated from the cliff wall. In Tambahan Kelod there is
the cultural attraction of Geredeg Temple and nearby springs and here road access is quite good. The local community however needs to improve their English so that they can communicate with visitors. During their three months of research, her found that only Antugan hamlet has a tourism awareness group that was formed just before the selfies from the Melangit River were uploaded and went viral, causing many visitors to come see for themselves. They originally collected voluntary donations to pay for the maintenance of the
attraction. “They just thought why not make it into a tourist attraction, which they did but the management remains quite simple without much structure”, explained Trivena. The development of this tourism at the village is also supported by the community, but just to extent that they are open to receiving visitors. “There has not been a lot of direct involvement, as the community needs some guidance form the government. WASHINGTON - Some 99 million years ago, a juvenile dinosaur got its feathery tail stuck in tree resin, a death trap for the small creature. But its misfortune is now giving scientists unique insight into feathered dinosaurs that prospered during the Cretaceous Period. Researchers said on Thursday a chunk of amber - fossilized resin - spotted by a Chinese scientist in a market in Myitkyina, Myanmar, last year contained 1.4 inches (36 mm) of the tail of the dinosaur, complete with bones, flesh, skin and feathers. The dinosaur itself was no more than 6 inches (15 cm) long, about the size of a sparrow. “This is the first of its kind,” said paleontologist Ryan McKellar of the Royal Saskatchewan Museum in Canada, one of the researchers involved in the study published in the journal Current Biology. “I’m blown away.” The scientists suspect the tail belonged to a type of two-legged, bird-like dinosaur called a maniraptoran, one of several groups of dinosaurs that possessed feathers. Birds, which first appeared about
150 million years ago during the Jurassic Period, evolved from small, feathered dinosaurs. The researchers used sophisticated scanning and microscopic observations to study the tail. They determined it boasted a chestnutbrown upper surface, with a pale or white underside, a pattern known as countershading. “We’re seeing feathers still attached to the tail, and we can see how they attach, the shapes that they have down to the micrometer scale, and things like pigment patterns within the feathers,” McKellar said. Division Head of Logistics and Emergency for the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Badung, A.A. Rai Adnyana, confirmed that there had been flooding but added that they were still collecting

Rainy season,Coastal area of Buleleng prone to marine debris
SINGARAJA - For the last few days, rivers in Buleleng have been overflowing, due to heavy rains. No only has this caused road and building to become flooded but the coastline is also suffering form pollution washed down from the rivers. In fact every-time there is heavy rain fall, the rivers bring large amounts of garbage including plastic and branches that pile up on the beaches. This debris is feared to disrupt the comfort of tourists visiting Buleleng , especially at this time of year when there tend to be more visitors than usual. To maintain the sanitation of the coastal area, the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency along with tourism business owners and local residents encourage clean-up activities on the coast. Over the last few days, beach clean-ups have taken place at Lovina Beach (Buleleng subdistrict), Pemuteran (Gerokgak subdistrict), to other beaches. Head of the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency, Nyoman Sutrisna, said on Saturday (Dec. 10) that tourist destinations in the region are mostly located on the beach. During the rainy season, the environment of tourist destinations in coastal areas is prone to being inundated with marine debris. If this is not dealt with succinctly, Sutrisna worries that travellers will not want to spend time in North
Bali. Therefore, his agency will be promoting scheduled beach cleanups with tourism players, village officials and other elements of society. Mansoer, Chief of Denpasar Police Hadi Purnomo and other memebrs of the community. President Jokowi was scheduled to join with them to watch the game, but had to cancel due to his visit to earthquake victiems in Aceh. The game-watching event started at 19:55 with the singing of Indoneisa’ national anthem Indonesia Raya. As soon as the whistle sounded, everyone’s focus was directed
to the screen. Spectators’ applause and shouts rumbled when the Indonesian team broke through the Vietnamese goalkeeper. The minister of Youth and Sports cheered when the Indonesian team scored their first goal. However, the audience had to hold their breath and felt disappointed when Indonesia’s goal net vibrated from being struck by the opponent’s ball. Cheers and applause resounded as soon as the long whistle was sounded with a score of 2: 2 , ensuring that Indonesia made it to the final round. The Minister of Youth and Sports thanked all the people of Bali who participated in watching the game together. “First of all, I’d like to say that the president could not attend because he was making a visit to Aceh Pidie to condole the victimss of the quake disaster afflicting our fellows there. Hwang has sought to calm anxiety over national security and to reassure financial markets while Park’s presidency is in limbo pending the outcome of a Constitutional Court review of her impeachment, which may take up to 180 days. Until then, Park will remain in the presidential Blue House a few blocks north of the main government complex where Hwang’s office is located. Eight of the Constitutional Court’s nine judges met on Monday to discuss how to proceed with the case but has not set dates for public hearings, its spokesman, Bae Bo-yoon, told a briefing. The ninth was away from the country on business. At least six of the nine judges have to concur for the motion to be upheld. The court will next week decide on the date for the two sides’ lawyers to appear for a preliminary hearing, he said.
Park, whose father ruled the country for 18 years after seizing power in a 1961 coup, has been accused of colluding with a friend and a former aide, both of whom have been indicted, to pressure big businesses to donate to foundations set up to back her policy initiatives. TOKYO - The Bank of Japan is likely to give a more upbeat view of the economy at next week’s rate review, sources say, as a pick-up in emerging Asian demand and positive signs in private consumption improve prospects for a solid, export-driven recovery. Any upgrade would reinforce market expectations that the central bank, after failing to jolt Japan out of deflation with years of massive monetary easing, will hold off on expanding stimulus measures in the coming months. At the previous meeting on Nov. 1, the BOJ said the economic trend was for moderate recovery, but slowing emerging market demand was weighing on exports and output. Since then, four sources familiar with the bank’s thinking said BOJ officials were becoming increasingly confident that global trade was emerging from the doldrums, as factories across Asia and Europe ramped up activity in November. They also see initial signs of recovery in private consumption, a perennial weak spot in Japan’s economy, with service-sector sentiment hitting a nearly three-year high.
At the Dec. 19-20 meeting, the BOJ will thus consider upgrading its language to signal that it is more confident the world’s third-largest economy is headed for a steady recovery, the sources said. “Global economic conditions are improving, and consumption appears to be picking up,” said one of the sources. “All in all, we’re seeing more bright signs for the economy.” Another source echoed that view, pointing out that recent economic indicators had been “mostly positive”. The BOJ’s nine-member board will reach a final decision after scrutinising its closely watched “tankan” quarterly business sentiment survey, due on Wednesday, the sources said. Indonesian anti-terrorist squad discovers bottles of chemicals
SUKOHARJO - The Indonesia National Police anti-terrorist squad, Special Detachment (Densus) 88, discovered bottles of chemicals while searching the house of suspected terrorist KF, 22, on Monday. KF was arrested by Densus 88 in the village of Gebang, Ngawi, East Java, on Sunday (Dec 11) for allegedly being involved in the making of a bomb uncovered by the police in Bekasi, West Java, recently. Some 40 bottles of chemicals, a laptop, books, and a rice cooker were seized by the police from KFs room in a lodging house in the neighborhood of Kampung Keputren RT 02/RW 09, Kartasura, Sukoharjo District, Central Java. The head of Kartasura Village, Didik Istiawan, who witnessed the search confirmed that bottles of chemicals and other items had been taken by the police from KFs room. “The items were found in Room Number 1, which was occupied by KF,” he stated. Mutiah Mujianti, the management of the lodging house, said KF and his friend had rented the room for the past three months and paid the rent every month. Sukoharjo resort police chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Ruminio Ardano noted at the scene that he had only helped Densus 88 conduct the search at the house. “We helped secure the location
to investigate the activities being carried out,” he remarked. Regarding the goods confiscated by Densus 88, he said there were 42 bottles of chemicals, a laptop, some books, and a rice cooker. He declined to divulge any further information on KF, saying he would refer it to Densus 88. KF is an eighth-semester student at the State Institute of Islamic Studies Surakarta. Police have arrested four people in connection with the finding of bombs in Bintarajaya, Bekasi, West Java, on Saturday, believed to be intended for detonation at the site of important national monuments. “Four suspects have been arrested by counter-terrorism squad Densus 88. Two more are still wanted. It is possible that this number will continue to increase, depending on the results of the investigation,” an official of the Public Information Bureau of the Indonesia Police, Senior Commissioner Awi Setiyono, stated at a press conference at the Indonesia Police Headquarter here on Sunday. MEUREUDU - Some 300 military officers have been deployed to help clear debris of collapsed buildings in the districts of Pidie Jaya, Pidie, and Bireun in Aceh Province, following a strong quake that hit the province on Dec 7. The military personnel together with local inhabitants helped carry out debris clear process, Commander of the 011 Lilawangsa Regional Military Command Colonel Inf. Agus Firman Yusmono, said here, Sunday. They comprised officers from the Marine and Military Construction Battalion. “This is part of our duty as TNI (Indonesian Defense Forces). TNI must always be ready to help ease suffering of its people, such as those hit by natural disaster like what happens now,” he said. Since the first day following the disaster, the TNI personnel have helped mitigate the quake. In the meantime, some 500 police officers have also been deployed to Aceh Province to help evacuate earthquake victims in Pidie Jaya District. Of the 500 personnel, 300 were from the Aceh Police Mobile Brigade, 120 from the Aceh Police Preventive Unit, 40 from Bireun Police Resort, and 40 from Aceh

The National Meteorological, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency reported that the 6.5-magnitude earthquake that rocked several districts in Aceh Province was triggered by the activity of a strikeslip fault. As many as 103 people have lost their lives and some 800 have been injured in the disaster. The earthquake, which destroyed several houses, school buildings, and places of worship, occurred at 5:03 a.m. local time on Wednesday, with its epicenter at 5.19 degrees northern latitude and 96.36 degrees eastern longitude, at a depth of 10 kilometers on land, some 18 km northeast of Pidie Jaya, or 120 km of Banda Aceh. Cairo church bombing kills 25, raises fears among Christians
CAIRO - A bombing at Cairo’s largest Coptic cathedral killed at least 25 people and wounded 49, many of them women and children attending Sunday mass, in the deadliest attack on Egypt’s Christian minority in years. The attack comes as President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi fights battles on several fronts. His economic reforms have angered the poor, a bloody crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood has seen thousands jailed, whilst an insurgency rages in Northern Sinai, led by the Egyptian branch of Islamic State. The militant group has also carried out deadly attacks in Cairo and has urged its supporters to launch attacks around the world in recent weeks as it goes on the defensive in its Iraqi and Syrian strongholds. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but exiled Brotherhood officials and home-grown militant groups condemned the attack. Islamic State supporters celebrated on social media. “God bless the person who did this blessed act,” wrote one supporter on Telegram. The explosion took place in a chapel, which adjoins St Mark’s, Cairo’s main cathedral and the seat of Coptic Pope Tawadros II, where security is
normally tight. The United States said it “will continue to work with its partners to defeat such terrorist acts” and that it was committed to Egypt’s security, according to a White House statement on Sunday. The UN Security Council urged “all States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with all relevant authorities” to hold those responsible accountable. At the Vatican, Pope Francis condemned what he called the latest in a series of “brutal terrorist attacks” and said he was praying for the dead and wounded. Italy hurries to form new government as banking crisis looms ROME - Italian President Sergio Mattarella asked Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni on Sunday to try to form a new government, giving him a mandate to lead Italy out of a political crisis caused by the resignation of Matteo Renzi. Gentiloni, a former journalist and Renzi loyalist, is set to be Italy’s fifth prime minister in as many years and the fourth in a row to take office without winning a national election. The soft-spoken 62-year-old immediately began consultations to form a government that will have to write a new electoral law and manage Italy’s fragile banks. Chief among his duties will be dealing quickly with Monte dei Paschi di Siena, the country’s thirdlargest lender, which may need state intervention to avoid collapse. “I am aware of the urgent need to give Italy a government with full powers, to reassure our fellow citizens, to confront our international, economic and social priorities,” he said. Italy’s social and political divisions were laid bare in campaigning for a Dec. 4 referendum on constitutional reform that was roundly rejected, prompting Renzi to resign. All major parties have called for elections as soon as possible, but replacing the current electoral law, which applies only to the lower house and could be declared invalid in January by the Constitutional Court, is also likely to dictate the
timetable. Elections could be called as soon as parliament finishes rewriting the electoral law. Gentiloni said he would “facilitate, if possible, the parliamentary forces’ task of quickly defining new electoral rules”. “There are just two windows of opportunity for elections, either it’s a snap election in Q2 2017 or it’s the natural end of the legislature in 2018,” said Francesco Galietti of risk consultancy Policy Sonar. He said several factors could influence the election date, including dealing with the banking crisis, the summit of the G7 nations scheduled in Sicily in May, and the need to name chiefs for a raft of state-owned companies as tenures run out. Commentators said Gentiloni could present his list of proposed cabinet members to the head of state as early as Monday, even waiting until after European markets opened. “The important thing is that the markets already know that with Gentiloni there will be no radical change,” said Maurizio Caprara, commentator for Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper. ONTARIO - South Korea’s Park Tae-hwan banished memories of a dismal run at the Rio Olympics by winning his third gold medal at the FINA short course world swimming championships in the men’s 1,500 metres freestyle on Sunday in Windsor, Ontario. Having already triumphed in the 200 and 400 freestyle, Park swam neck-and-neck with world record holder Gregorio Paltrinieri in the early stages of the 1,500 before pulling away to take the title in a championship record time of 14 minutes 15.51 seconds, more than six seconds clear of Italian Paltrinieri. On the women’s side, Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu capped a stellar week in Windsor by clinching her seventh gold of the meet on Sunday as she won the 100 butterfly in 55.12 seconds.

Hosszu, a three-time champion at the Rio Olympics where she set a world record in the 400 individual medley, single-handedly won more events in Windsor than any other nation except the United States. AMLAPURA - A small island lying off Bali’s eastern point which, like all exposed sites, at times has ripping currents. We therefore restrict this to expert divers only. It takes a fast boat from Padangbai, and you can either dive once at Gili Selang and then go on to Amed, or dive within Padangbai and then on to Gili Selang (although that is a long return journey). The interesting and rich sand slope to the north of the island has some stands of hard branching corals and occasional bommies, the deeper areas of the slope are more protected and therefore home to sea fans, soft corals, barrel sponges and coral bushes. Along this sand slope you may well see white tip reef shark and Bumphead Parrotfish. Sitting at around 18M, moving southwards with the current, around the east side of Gili Selang, can provide you with great visibility. Here however, the slope becomes rockier, much steeper and loses any significant coral cover. Tucking into the south side of the island and coming in towards Bali, you’ll get out of the current, and encounter another area of low but healthy reef with many moray eels and schooling fish including trevally. SYDNEY - Australian world number 13 Nick Kyrgios thinks his ATP-imposed suspension will stand him in good stead when he makes a push for the top 10 next season. The 21-year-old rose to a career high ranking this year but his tour season ended with a $25,000 fine and a two-month ban from the ATP for not trying in a match at the Shanghai Masters. The ban was reduced to three weeks after he agreed to see a sports psychologist. “The ATP wanted me to see a psychologist to help me out and I’ve been doing that,” Kyrgios told Fox Sports after help-
ing the Singapore Slammers to the Indian Premier League Tennis title in Hyderabad on Sunday. “It’s actually been good, just relaxing a little bit, spending more time with my family and my girlfriend as well. “So the suspension, one way to look at it, is getting more time off with the people you love and I’ve been training as well, so it’s set me up in good stead for 2017. “Obviously I wouldn’t have wanted to get suspended but it gave me time to think about and analyse what I’ve got to get better at.”

Most of the Chapecoense team perished in a plane crash that killed all but six of the 77 people on board as they approached Medellin airport late last month to play the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final against Atletico. The Copa Libertadores and Colombian champions arrived in Osaka on Saturday still reeling from the shock of the tragedy but must shift their focus to Wednesday’s semifinal against local side Kashima Antlers. “The team (Chapecoense) is always in our hearts and our minds,” Mosquera was quoted as saying by Kyodo news agency. “Every time we play and we win, it is a
homage to their team. I think the entire world soccer community has been affected by this tragedy and everyone will remember them forever. “We are all happy to be here because it’s a dream to be participating in this tournament,” Mosquera added. “We want to do whatever we can to get to the final. “We’ve always watched the games and we think it’s an amazing tournament. Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy said his confidence never sagged despite criticism for his goal drought which he finally ended in Saturday’s 4-2 Premier League win over Manchester City. The England international has struggled to replicate his stunning form which aided Leicester’s fairytale Premier League triumph last season. Former England captain Alan Shearer advised him to work harder, while Michael Owen said the 29-year-old was not a “natural finisher”. “I don’t listen to that,” Vardy, who notched up his first Leicester City hat-trick on Saturday, told British media. “He (Owen) can say what he wants. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I am not going to read into anything like that.” “It is up to them what they say, I will just get on with it, work on the training field every day and try to take it into the matches.” Vardy hoped the impressive win over Pep Guardiola’s side would help Leicester recapture the form that saw them crowned league champions. “Even though we haven’t been getting the results and a few of the performances were a bit below-par, we knew deep down we were still

Park and Hosszu dazzle at short course worlds
ONTARIO - South Korea’s Park Tae-hwan banished memories of a dismal run at the Rio Olympics by winning his third gold medal at the FINA short course world swimming championships in the men’s 1,500 metres freestyle on Sunday in Windsor, Ontario. Having already triumphed in the 200 and 400 freestyle, Park swam neck-and-neck with world record holder Gregorio Paltrinieri in the early stages of the 1,500 before pulling away to take the title in a championship record time of 14 minutes 15.51 seconds, more than six seconds clear of Italian Paltrinieri. On the women’s side, Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu capped a stellar week in Windsor by clinching her seventh gold of the meet on Sunday as she won the 100 butterfly in 55.12 seconds.

Hosszu, a three-time champion at the Rio Olympics where she set a world record in the 400 individual medley, single-handedly won more events in Windsor than any other nation except the United States. For Park, triple gold would have tasted extra sweet following his disappointing form at the Rio Games in August when he won a late battle to compete after appealing against a doping ban. Park, the first Korean to claim an Olympic swimming medal when he won the 400 freestyle in Beijing in 2008, had completed an 18-month
ban imposed by world governing body FINA in March after testing positive for testosterone ahead of the 2014 Asian Games. Under a controversial Korean Olympic Committee regulation, he was then hit with an additional three-year ban from the national team the day the FINA suspension expired. AMLAPURA - A small island lying off Bali’s eastern point which, like all exposed sites, at times has ripping currents. We therefore restrict this to expert divers only. It takes a fast boat from Padangbai, and you can either dive once at Gili Selang and then go on to Amed, or dive within Padangbai and then on to Gili Selang (although that is a long return journey). The interesting and rich sand slope to the north of the island has some stands of hard branching corals and occasional bommies, the deeper areas of the slope are more protected and therefore home to sea fans, soft corals, barrel sponges and coral bushes. Along this sand slope you may well see white tip reef shark and Bumphead Parrotfish. Sitting at around 18M, moving southwards with the current, around the east side of Gili Selang, can provide you with great visibility. Here however, the slope becomes rockier, much steeper and loses any significant coral cover. Tucking into the south side of the island and coming in towards Bali, you’ll get out of the current, and encounter another area of low but healthy reef with many moray eels and schooling fish including trevally. SYDNEY - Australian world number 13 Nick Kyrgios thinks his ATP-imposed suspension will stand him in good stead when he makes a push for the top 10 next season. The 21-year-old rose to a career high ranking this year but his tour season ended with a $25,000 fine and a two-month ban from the ATP for not trying in a match at the Shanghai Masters. The ban was reduced to three weeks after he agreed to see a sports psychologist. “The ATP wanted me to see a psychologist to help me out and I’ve been doing that,” Kyrgios told Fox Sports after help-

Cairo church bombing kills 25, raises fears among Christians
CAIRO - A bombing at Cairo’s largest Coptic cathedral killed at least 25 people and wounded 49, many of them women and children attending Sunday mass, in the deadliest attack on Egypt’s Christian minority in years. The attack comes as President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi fights battles on several fronts. His economic reforms have angered the poor, a bloody crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood has seen thousands jailed, whilst an insurgency rages in Northern Sinai, led by the Egyptian branch of Islamic State. The militant group has also carried out deadly attacks in Cairo and has urged its supporters to launch attacks around the world in recent weeks as it goes on the defensive in its Iraqi and Syrian strongholds. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but exiled Brotherhood officials and home-grown militant groups condemned the attack. Islamic State supporters celebrated on social media. “God bless the person who did this blessed act,” wrote one supporter on Telegram. The explosion took place in a chapel, which adjoins St Mark’s, Cairo’s main cathedral and the seat of Coptic Pope Tawadros II, where security is
normally tight. The United States said it “will continue to work with its partners to defeat such terrorist acts” and that it was committed to Egypt’s security, according to a White House statement on Sunday. The UN Security Council urged “all States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with all relevant authorities” to hold those responsible accountable. At the Vatican, Pope Francis condemned what he called the latest in a series of “brutal terrorist attacks” and said he was praying for the dead and wounded. The chapel’s floor was covered in debris from shattered windows, its wooden pews blasted apart, its pillars blackened. Here and there lay abandoned shoes and sticky patches of blood. “As soon as the priest called us
to prepare for prayer, the explosion happened,” Emad Shoukry, who was inside when the blast took place, told Reuters. “The explosion shook the place ... the dust covered the hall and I was looking for the door, although I couldn’t see anything ... Italy hurries to form new government as banking crisis looms ROME - Italian President Sergio Mattarella asked Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni on Sunday to try to form a new government, giving him a mandate to lead Italy out of a political crisis caused by the resignation of Matteo Renzi. Gentiloni, a former journalist and Renzi loyalist, is set to be Italy’s fifth prime minister in as many years and the fourth in a row to take office without winning a national election. The soft-spoken 62-year-old immediately began consultations to form a government that will have to write a new electoral law and manage Italy’s fragile banks. Chief among his duties will be dealing quickly with Monte dei Paschi di Siena, the country’s thirdlargest lender, which may need state intervention to avoid collapse. “I am aware of the urgent need to give Italy a government with full powers, to reassure our fellow citizens, to confront our international, economic and social priorities,” he said. Italy’s social and political divisions were laid bare in campaigning for a Dec. 4 referendum on constitutional reform that was roundly rejected, prompting Renzi to resign. All major parties have called for elections as soon as possible, but replacing the current electoral law, which applies only to the lower house and could be declared invalid in January by the Constitutional Court, is also likely to dictate the
timetable. Elections could be called as soon as parliament finishes rewriting the electoral law. Gentiloni said he would “facilitate, if possible, the parliamentary forces’ task of quickly defining new electoral rules”. “There are just two windows of opportunity for elections, either it’s a snap election in Q2 2017 or it’s the natural end of the legislature in 2018,” said Francesco Galietti of risk consultancy Policy Sonar. TOKYO - The Bank of Japan is likely to give a more upbeat view of the economy at next week’s rate review, sources say, as a pick-up in emerging Asian demand and positive signs in private consumption improve prospects for a solid, export-driven recovery. Any upgrade would reinforce market expectations that the central bank, after failing to jolt Japan out of deflation with years of massive monetary easing, will hold off on expanding stimulus measures in the coming months. At the previous meeting on Nov. 1, the BOJ said the economic trend was for moderate recovery, but slowing emerging market demand was weighing on exports and output. Since then, four sources familiar with the bank’s thinking said BOJ officials were becoming increasingly confident that global trade was emerging from the doldrums, as factories across Asia and Europe ramped up activity in November. They also see initial signs of recovery in private consumption, a perennial weak spot in Japan’s economy, with service-sector sentiment hitting a nearly three-year high.
At the Dec. 19-20 meeting, the BOJ will thus consider upgrading its language to signal that it is more confident the world’s third-largest economy is headed for a steady recovery, the sources said. “Global economic conditions are improving, and consumption appears to be picking up,” said one of the sources. “All in all, we’re seeing more bright signs for the economy.” Another source echoed that view, pointing out that recent economic indicators had been “mostly positive”. Indonesian anti-terrorist squad discovers bottles of chemicals
SUKOHARJO - The Indonesia National Police anti-terrorist squad, Special Detachment (Densus) 88, discovered bottles of chemicals while searching the house of suspected terrorist KF, 22, on Monday. KF was arrested by Densus 88 in the village of Gebang, Ngawi, East Java, on Sunday (Dec 11) for allegedly being involved in the making of a bomb uncovered by the police in Bekasi, West Java, recently. Some 40 bottles of chemicals, a laptop, books, and a rice cooker were seized by the police from KFs room in a lodging house in the neighborhood of Kampung Keputren RT 02/RW 09, Kartasura, Sukoharjo District, Central Java. The head of Kartasura Village, Didik Istiawan, who witnessed the search confirmed that bottles of chemicals and other items had been taken by the police from KFs room. “The items were found in Room Number 1, which was occupied by KF,” he stated. Mutiah Mujianti, the management of the lodging house, said KF and his friend had rented the room for the past three months and paid the rent every month. Sukoharjo resort police chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Ruminio Ardano noted at the scene that he had only helped Densus 88 conduct the search at the house. “We helped secure the location
to investigate the activities being carried out,” he remarked. Regarding the goods confiscated by Densus 88, he said there were 42 bottles of chemicals, a laptop, some books, and a rice cooker. He declined to divulge any further information on KF, saying he would refer it to Densus 88. KF is an eighth-semester student at the State Institute of Islamic Studies Surakarta. Police have arrested four people in connection with the finding of bombs in Bintarajaya, Bekasi, West Java, on Saturday, believed to be intended for detonation at the site of important national monuments. “Four suspects have been arrested by counter-terrorism squad Densus 88. Two more are still wanted. It is possible that this number will continue to increase, depending on the results of the investigation,” an official of the Public Information Bureau of the Indonesia Police, Senior Commissioner Awi Setiyono, stated at a press conference at the Indonesia Police Headquarter here on Sunday. MEUREUDU - Some 300 military officers have been deployed to help clear debris of collapsed buildings in the districts of Pidie Jaya, Pidie, and Bireun in Aceh Province, following a strong quake that hit the province on Dec 7. The military personnel together with local inhabitants helped carry out debris clear process, Commander of the 011 Lilawangsa Regional Military Command Colonel Inf. Agus Firman Yusmono, said here, Sunday. They comprised officers from the Marine and Military Construction Battalion. “This is part of our duty as TNI (Indonesian Defense Forces). TNI must always be ready to help ease suffering of its people, such as those hit by natural disaster like what happens now,” he said. Since the first day following the disaster, the TNI personnel have helped mitigate the quake. In the meantime, some 500 police officers have also been deployed to Aceh Province to help evacuate earthquake victims in Pidie Jaya District. The earthquake, which destroyed several houses, school buildings, and places of worship, occurred at 5:03 a.m. local time on Wednesday, with its epicenter at 5.19 degrees northern latitude and 96.36 degrees eastern longitude, at a depth of 10 kilometers on land, some 18 km northeast of Pidie Jaya, or 120 km of Banda Aceh. SINGARAJA - For the last few days, rivers in Buleleng have been overflowing, due to heavy rains. No only has this caused road and building to become flooded but the coastline is also suffering form pollution washed down from the rivers. In fact every-time there is heavy rain fall, the rivers bring large amounts of garbage including plastic and branches that pile up on the beaches. This debris is feared to disrupt the comfort of tourists visiting Buleleng , especially at this time of year when there tend to be more visitors than usual. Head of the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency, Nyoman Sutrisna, said on Saturday (Dec. 10) that tourist destinations in the region are mostly located on the beach. During the rainy season, the environment of tourist destinations in coastal areas is prone to being inundated with marine debris. If this is not dealt with succinctly, Sutrisna worries that travellers will not want to spend time in North
Bali. Therefore, his agency will be promoting scheduled beach cleanups with tourism players, village officials and other elements of society. Beaches that have been especially targeted by this program Lovina, Pemuteran and other areas that were recently flooded. “There is quite a lot of garbage on the beaches, but we have coordinated scheduled beach cleanups”, he explained. The game-watching, organized by the Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) was also attended by Deputy Regent of Badung Ketut Suyasa, Commander of the 163 Military Resort Nyoman Cantiasa, Managing Director of ITDC Abdulbar M. Mansoer, Chief of Denpasar Police Hadi Purnomo and other memebrs of the community. President Jokowi was scheduled to join with them to watch the game, but had to cancel due to his visit to earthquake victiems in Aceh. The game-watching event started at 19:55 with the singing of Indoneisa’ national anthem Indonesia Raya. As soon as the whistle sounded, everyone’s focus was directed
to the screen. Spectators’ applause and shouts rumbled when the Indonesian team broke through the Vietnamese goalkeeper. The minister of Youth and Sports cheered when the Indonesian team scored their first goal. However, the audience had to hold their breath and felt disappointed when Indonesia’s goal net vibrated from being struck by the opponent’s ball. Cheers and applause resounded as soon as the long whistle was sounded with a score of 2: 2 , ensuring that Indonesia made it to the final round. The Minister of Youth and Sports thanked all the people of Bali who participated in watching the game together. “First of all, I’d like to say that the president could not attend because he was making a visit to Aceh Pidie to condole the victimss of the quake disaster afflicting our fellows there. Hwang has sought to calm anxiety over national security and to reassure financial markets while Park’s presidency is in limbo pending the outcome of a Constitutional Court review of her impeachment, which may take up to 180 days. Until then, Park will remain in the presidential Blue House a few blocks north of the main government complex where Hwang’s office is located. Eight of the Constitutional Court’s nine judges met on Monday to discuss how to proceed with the case but has not set dates for public hearings, its spokesman, Bae Bo-yoon, told a briefing. The ninth was away from the country on business. At least six of the nine judges have to concur for the motion to be upheld. The court will next week decide on the date for the two sides’ lawyers to appear for a preliminary hearing, he said.
Park, whose father ruled the country for 18 years after seizing power in a 1961 coup, has been accused of colluding with a friend and a former aide, both of whom have been indicted, to pressure big businesses to donate to foundations set up to back her policy initiatives. She has denied wrongdoing but apologised for carelessness in her ties with her friend, Choi Soon-sil. Park has yet to announce her defence team, which is expected to be made up of at least four lawyers, including an attorney she had retained last month. Park’s term was set to end in February 2018. In fossil rarity, tumor found in 255-millionyear-old beast
WASHINGTON - Scientists examining the jawbone of a saber-toothed, mammal-like beast that prowled Tanzania 255 million years ago have come across a remarkable fossil rarity: one of the oldest-known tumors. University of Washington researchers on Thursday described a benign tumor composed of miniature tooth-like structures they found embedded next to the root of the creature’s enlarged canine tooth while studying an unrelated aspect of the jaw. The animal was a member of an extinct group of four-legged carnivores called gorgonopsians that mixed mammal-like and reptilelike traits. They reached up to 10 feet (3 meters) long and appeared early in the evolutionary lineage that led to mammals. The jawbone came from one of the smaller gorgonopsian species.
Gorgonopsians were among the top predators of their time, thriving from about 270 million to 252 million years ago when they were wiped out during Earth’s worst mass extinction at the end of the Permian Period. Their demise came roughly 20 million years before the first dinosaurs. When the researchers sliced into the mandible fossil from Tanzania’s Ruhuhu Valley, they found a benign dental tumor called a compound odontoma that grows within the gums or other jaw soft tissues. When people get one, surgery is sometimes used to remove it. “There was no indication that
there was a tumor in this jaw. It looked normal before we cut it open. It was pure luck that we found the tumor,” University of Washington paleobiologist Megan Whitney said. Until now, this type of tumor was known only in mammals, including some Ice Age fossils tens of thousands of years old. The new discovery shows such a tumor existed in mammal ancestors that lived tens of millions of years before the first mammals appeared. Tumors, malignant and benign, typically involve soft tissue, and rarely fossilize. “Ancient tumors generally need to affect hard parts such as bones and teeth in order to be preserved in the fossil record,” University of Washington paleobiologist Christian Sidor added. Jehem village develops due to platform of Melangit River
TOURISM in Jehem village, Tembuku, Bangli, has started to be developed. One of the attractions is a platform overlooking the Melangit River. Pictures form the platform went viral on social media sites when some youth from the village uploaded pictures of the site, some time ago. “Some creative young people from Jehem village, made some gazebos next to the Melangit River platform” explained Hani Trivena, Chief of the Tourism Field Research Committee doing research on the tourism potential of Jehem village this year. Jehem village consists of several hamlets, including Antugan, Tam-
bahan Kelod and Jehem Kaja that are the focus of the research being conducted by the Bali International Tourism College (STPBI). Antugan hamlet has started to popularize lawar biu batu , a local delicacy made from young stone bananas. “We are also encouraging people to make stone banana tea” she added.
Visitors can also visit the rainbow cave as it is known, that is located under the platform and there is also a pretty good trekking trail. “The hidden canyon is beautiful but road access is still poor”, said Trivena. In Jehem Kaja there is cooperative that produces incense and they plan to make this into another tourist attraction, along with the natural beauty of the Antugan hamlet. Jehem Kaja is also home to the Jehem Cliff Temple previously separated from the cliff wall. In Tambahan Kelod there is
the cultural attraction of Geredeg Temple and nearby springs and here road access is quite good. The local community however needs to improve their English so that they can communicate with visitors. During their three months of research, her found that only Antugan hamlet has a tourism awareness group that was formed just before the selfies from the Melangit River were uploaded and went viral, causing many visitors to come see for themselves. They originally collected voluntary donations to pay for the maintenance of the
attraction. “They just thought why not make it into a tourist attraction, which they did but the management remains quite simple without much structure”, explained Trivena. The development of this tourism at the village is also supported by the community, but just to extent that they are open to receiving visitors. “There has not been a lot of direct involvement, as the community needs some guidance form the government. WASHINGTON - Some 99 million years ago, a juvenile dinosaur got its feathery tail stuck in tree resin, a death trap for the small creature. But its misfortune is now giving scientists unique insight into feathered dinosaurs that prospered during the Cretaceous Period. Researchers said on Thursday a chunk of amber - fossilized resin - spotted by a Chinese scientist in a market in Myitkyina, Myanmar, last year contained 1.4 inches (36 mm) of the tail of the dinosaur, complete with bones, flesh, skin and feathers. The dinosaur itself was no more than 6 inches (15 cm) long, about the size of a sparrow. “This is the first of its kind,” said paleontologist Ryan McKellar of the Royal Saskatchewan Museum in Canada, one of the researchers involved in the study published in the journal Current Biology. “I’m blown away.” The scientists suspect the tail belonged to a type of two-legged, bird-like dinosaur called a maniraptoran, one of several groups of dinosaurs that possessed feathers. Birds, which first appeared about
150 million years ago during the Jurassic Period, evolved from small, feathered dinosaurs. The researchers used sophisticated scanning and microscopic observations to study the tail. They determined it boasted a chestnutbrown upper surface, with a pale or white underside, a pattern known as countershading. “We’re seeing feathers still attached to the tail, and we can see how they attach, the shapes that they have down to the micrometer scale, and things like pigment patterns within the feathers,” McKellar said. The tail consisted of eight vertebrae, soft tissue and feathers exquisitely preserved in three dimensions. McKellar said getting its tail stuck in resin “would have been a game-ender for that particular animal. They don’t drop their tails like some lizards.” The tail’s anatomy enabled the scientists to rule out that it belonged to a bird because it was long and flexible and lacked a pygostyle, fused vertebrae that in birds support the tail feathers. MANGUPURA - Heavy rains in the district Badung district on Saturday (Dec. 10) caused flooding in several places, including Buduk village in Mengwi. Division Head of Logistics and Emergency for the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Badung, A.A. Rai Adnyana, confirmed that there had been flooding but added that they were still collecting
date about the flood in Buduk. “Our team is still on site to collecting date, I will give further details later this afternoon”, he said briefly. Residents of Buduk village said that two sanctums had been flooded; Taman Beji at Sengguan hamlet and Penganyudan Temple at Pasekan hamlet. Highways, boarding houses at Sengguan and the the road outside Indomaret in Tengah hamlet were
also flooded. Fortunatly there were no flood related fatalities. “The flood was caused by the overflow feom Yeh Pangi River” said Buduk village ommunity leadr, Ida Bagus Arga Patra, who added that water from the channels of Subak Ayung and Subak Bernasi also overflowed. “The Beji Temple and the boarding house near SMPN 3 Mengwi junior high school are slightly lower
down and lie near The Pangi River. From higher gorund looking down we can see that the temple street is flooded”, he explained. Arga estimated that the height of the flood-waters reached 1.5 meters. Fortunately, the quick response unit of the BPBD Badung reacted swiftly to evacuate people affected by the floods, so there were no casualties. “The floods occurred on Saturday
afternoon and had already receded by about two o’clock”, he said. Division Head of Roads and Bridges of the Badung Highways Agency, Sang Nyoman Oka Permana, confirmed that the flooding in the streets of Buduk village had already subsided. Bus passengers at Ubung Terminal decline
SINCE 2002 there has been a steady change in the way people use transport services. Wheras in the past, people tended to travel by bus when visiting locations outside their region, however now people tend more and more towards traveling by other means, such as by private car, travel services or airplane. Natural the frenzied atmosphere of bus terminals has also
changed, and Ubung terminal in Norht Denpasar is no excep-
tion. Previously, Ubung terminal was classified as type A, but since Mengwi terminal stated operating, Ubung was downgraded to type B. The change in status has had no significant impact on activity at the ter-

minal and interprovincial city buses (AKAP) still operate out of Ubung Terminal, so passengers wanting to use public transport to travel outside of Bali can still depart from Ubung terminal. Its status was downgraded in accordance with Presidential Decree No.54/2011. Unit Chief of the Ubung Terminal, A.A. Eka Putra, when met at his office on Friday (Dec. 9) confirmed that Ubing terminal is not as busy as it was a few years ago. There are less and less passengers and so the atmosphere is increasingly quite, expect during the week following Lebaren, when large large numbers of people flow through Ubung as they return to Bali from Java. “ On normal days, there are very few passengers” he said. Today there are about 40 bus companies that operate at Ubung with an average of 50 buses departing daily for inter-provincial city transportation (AKAP) carrying around 1,000 passengers. IN 2014, there were 1,085 people using 54 buses.
Meanwhile, the other terminals in Denpasar face more severe conditions, four passenger terminals and 1 cargo terminal are concerned about the lack of passengers and one has been been transformed into a market. Head of the Denpasar Transportation Agency, I Gede Astika, said that Denpasar’s 4 passenger terminals are located at Ubung, Kereneng, Wangaya and Tegal. Another terminal on Jalan Gunung Agung has been transformed into a market. Similarly, Wangaya terminal has also been functioning as a market, though it still retains its status as a terminal. Many terminals are dormant, said Astika, because of the decline in public transport users. Not more than 3 percent of Denpasar’s population uses these services. One of the main reasons for this, explained Astika is that more people now own motorcycles. “Many people having started using private transport, especially motorcycles” he said. (ara)
Head of the Badung Transportation and Infocom Agency, I Wayan Weda Dharmaja, stated that not all AKAP buses are mandated to drop passengers off at the 12 hectare space of Mengwi terminal, it depends on their route permits.. “There are AKAP buses that have a permit to operate from Ubun and Padangabi. So, passengers should be dropped off according to the route permit of the bus. This does not have to be Mengwi, unless their route permit states that they have to operate form Mengwi”, he explained. According to Weda, before heading to the terminal appropriate to their route permit, every AKAP bus has to stop at Mengwi terminal anyway. “The buses must enter Mengwi terminal first. After that, they can resume their journey to Ubung or Padangbai”, said Weda. Apart from these issues, the central government’s management of Mengwi terminal also remains unclear given the role that Ubung continues to play, and has been problematic for a number of employees. The government of Badung has provided 61 personnel for the Mengwi terminal, including
security guards, cleaning services and a temple priest, but the central government has not provided certainty about when the terminal management will be taken over. Meanwhile, the government of Badung did not allocate the usual IDR 2 billion for the operating budget for Mengwi terminal for 2017. “I heard there has not been a decision about the central government managing Mengwi terminal, but the local government (of Badung—Ed) has not allocated any operating budget for the terminal in 2017. If this is true, we do not know about our fate” said cleaning service officer, Ketut Astiti, when met at the terminal. Astiti said he was quite alarmed to hear of such conditions as his livelihood depends on this. The local government s therefore expected to find a way to deal with the uncertain policy. “Me, along with 27 other colleagues, we are paid by the government of Badung pursuant to the district minimum wage. However, with the current central government policy,we are afraid of layoffs. Hopefully, there is a solution to this problem”, she concluded. (kmb27)

Inter-provincial city bus reluctant to stop at Mengwi terminal
MANGUPURA - Mengwi terminal is not functioning optimally. Since it was inaugurated in 2011, this type-A terminal remains dormant. A number of inter-provincial city buses (AKAP) drop off their passengers on the road in front of the Mengwi terminal, instead of inside the terminal. Not disorderly condition of bus services at Mengwi terminal was also recognized by Ngurah Sukarma, a public transport driver at the terminal on Saturday (Dec. 10). Although Mengwi terminal has been designated as a type-A terminal in order to relieve traffic congestion in the city, a lot of interprovincial city transportations still do not comply with the rules and continue to drop off passengers at the Ubung terminal. “The government program must be consistent. If the buses are allowed to pass (to Ubung terminal— Ed), it will have an impact on us, in fact quite a big impact on drivers”, he complained. Sukarma explained that because both Mengwi and Ubung terminals are functional, it makes it easy for AKAP drivers to cheat. Such behavior must be dealt with
decisively, so as not to harm public transportation operating at Mengwi terminal. “This requires firm government action. In other words, there is a lack of clarity about Ubung and Mengwi terminals. If the government takes decisive action, there wil not be a problem”, he said. However, if the current condition persists, with AKAP buses still using Ubung terminal by and dropping passengers off on the side of the road, this will obviously disrupt public transport operating at Mengwi. The central government’s take-over of Mengwi terminal should mean that the problems being faced today can be resolved. “Hopefully, once Megwi terminal is taken over by the central government, things will improve”, he said with hope, adding that there are 70 commercial vehicles that rely on Mengwi terminal. Previously, the Minister of Transportation, Budi Karya, requested that Bali’s provincial government and other relevant agencies to crack down on buses that do not comply with the rules and drop passengers of on the road
at Ubung Terminal. Budi Karya also considers that Mengwi terminal is not functioning properly because buses operating from Ubung Terminal do not want to move to Mengwi terminal. On that account, the Ministry of Transportation has appealed to the government of Bali to enforce the law. “We asked that the governor implement law enforcement. What’s at Ubung should be moved to Mengwi. I think there must be a great willingness on the part of the Municipality of Denpasar to remove the transport services currently operating at Ubung as it will relieve traffic congestion in Denpasar. Another option is to make Ubung into a logistics warehouse, so that all the logistics are placed here. Ultimately, the function can run well”, he explained. The Ministry of Transportation will also make an effort to improve the traffic associated with freights or weighbridges. “Although a request has been submitted to the central government, we ask that the province work to resolve the problem of the inter-provincial buses unwillingness to be relocated from Ubung to Mengwi”, he said.

“Star Wars” enters “grittier” new chapter with “Rogue One” premiere
LOS ANGELES - With a new band of rebels and a highstakes journey, “Star Wars” ushered in a new chapter on Saturday by bringing a galaxy far, far away to the heart of Hollywood for the “Rogue One” premiere. Directed by Gareth Edwards, “Rogue One” is the first standalone film in Disney’s “Star Wars” reboot. But for the sake of ‘Star Wars’, I was prepared to do it,” she said. ISTANBUL — Turkey’s interior ministry says 235 people have been detained in anti-terrorism operations across the nation. The state-run Anadolu Agency quoted the ministry as saying 235 people in 11 cities were arrested on terrorism-related charges and for spreading terrorist propaganda on social media.
The report did not specify the name of the organization targeted or whether the individuals rounded up were suspected of involvement in a Saturday night attack in Istanbul. Turkey declared a national day of mourning and paid tribute to the dead Sunday after two bombings in Istanbul killed 38 people and wounded 155 others near a soccer stadium. The carnage was claimed by a Turkey-based Kurdish militant group. The Kurdistan Freedom Falcons, or TAK, said two of its members had sacrificed their lives in the Saturday night attack that targeted security forces outside the Besiktas stadium shortly after the conclusion of a match. “Two of our comrades were heroically martyred in the attack,” according to a statement posted on TAK’s website.
It described the blasts as reprisal for state violence in the southeast and the ongoing imprisonment of Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK. TAK is considered by authorities as a PKK offshoot. The twin car-and-suicide bombings near the stadium enraged top officials, including President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who vowed to hunt down the perpetrators. The attack was the latest large-scale assault to traumatize a nation confronting an array of security threats. Turkey is a NATO member and a partner in the U.S.-led war against the Islamic State group. The attack targeted police officers, killing 30 of them along with seven civilians and an unidentified person, Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu told reporters. He
said 13 people had been arrested in connection with the “terrorist” act. In an address at a funeral for the slain police officers before TAK’s statement was released, a furious Soylu condemned Kurdish rebels and their allies in the West, referring to the PKK as “animals.” “Have you accomplished anything beyond being the servants, pawns and hit men of certain dark forces, of your dark Western partners?” he asked.
