DiMaggio wrote in his letter that he learned Monroe was leaving him when he saw her make the announcement on television. “My heart split even wider seeing you cry in front of all these people,” he wrote in the letter addressed to “Mrs. Joe DiMaggio” and mailed special delivery. Other letters in the collection come from such friends as actors Clark Gable, Cary Grant and Jane Russell, the latter imploring Monroe in 10 neatly handwritten pages to give her marriage to DiMaggio another chance. “It really gives you the chills when you read some of the stuff and see the intimacy and the personal nature of it,” said auction curator Martin Nolan, who spent nine months organizing and cataloging the collection. SEMARAPURA - The trial of mutilation case was held again, Tuesday (Nov 11). The trial presented witnesses from the victim’s family Diana Sari. Among others, there were her father Asikin and mother Sahni. Before starting the trial, the victim’s parents sued the judge of Semarapura District Court to impose death penalty on the defendant. Asikin even added that after the death penalty, Fikri should be imposed with chopping penalty as a just one for his action. Asikin assessed the defendant Fikri already acted very viciously against her daughter and it was inexcusable. Asikin seemed still in shocked condition after missing his eldest daughter in such sadistic manner. He accused if the defendant had planned the murder and

mutilation against her daughter in Bali. “Fikri has already prepared a grave for my daughter in Bali (Klungkung). I am confident it has been planned. Maybe he knows, if murdering his daughter in Sumbawa, Fikri will not survive,” he said. When entering the court room to

Both of them stopped their testimony several times considering the terrible fate afflicting their daughter. After hearing the testimony of witnesses, Fikri justified the entire information submitted by Asikin and Sahni. As planned, in the recent trial the prosecutor planned to present 11 witnesses. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

PARIS - Scientists said Monday they had found a variant of a gene that confers a near five-fold protection against typhoid fever, which affects millions of people each year. The discovery, that came from screening the genomes of hundreds of infected people and healthy controls in Vietnam and Nepal, may aid the development of better vaccines for typhoid and other bacterial diseases, said the authors of a study published in Nature Genetics. “We found that carrying a particular form of the HLA-DRB1 gene provides natural resistance against

typhoid fever,” study co-author Sarah Dunstan of the University of Melbourne said in a statement. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 21 million people are infected with typhoid fever every year, and an estimated 216,000 to 600,000 die. It is caused by the Salmonella typhi or Paratyphi bacteria carried in contaminated food or water, said the study authors. The gene they found protects against infection by recognising proteins from invading bacteria, thus stimulating an immune response. Vaccines against S. typhi do exist, but are not always effective and

are not suitable for young children -- the group most at risk, according to the study authors. “Consequently, these vaccines are not widely deployed in the populations with the greatest need,” they wrote. “Notably, there is currently no licensed vaccine against enteric fever caused by S. Paratyphi pathovars, potentially constituting a huge problem as the incidence of S. Paratyphi A infection is increasing in many countries across Asia.” The team said their discovery may lead to “improvements in the rational design of vaccines” for this and other bacterial infections.

A study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that the virus was present in about half of 92 human subjects studied, and those who had it performed worse on certain basic tasks. The virus, known as Acanthocystis turfacea Chlorella virus 1, or ATCV-1, also appeared to limit the cognitive abilities of mice. The mice had a harder time navigating a maze and noticing new objects in their surroundings after they were infected. It remains unclear if the virus was truly driving the drop in mental functioning. Researchers have not yet shown the cause and effect between the virus and the intelligence results. “At this point we do not think that this virus should be considered as a threat to individual or public health,” said lead researcher Robert Yolken, a virologist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. “We do think that there is a need for additional medical and scientific studies of the effects of infectious agents which are common in the environment on human health and cognition,” Yolken told AFP. The virus was found by accident while scientists were analyzing microbes in the throats of healthy humans for a different study. Experts have been studying viruses similar to ATCV-1 for 35 years, said senior author James Van Etten of the University of Nebraska, an expert on algal viruses. Van Etten joined the research four years ago when Johns Hopkins

scientists found ATCV-1’s DNA sequences in the brain tissue of people who had died with mental disorders such as schizophrenia. “This finding was certainly surprising to us,” Van Etten told AFP. “These viruses are ubiquitous in fresh water ponds and streams throughout the world,” Van Etten said. He noted that the virus -- previously thought to only infect algae -could make its way into the human body when people swallow water while swimming. There might also be another host in nature, such as mosquito larvae, he said. But the nature of the disease is still in the early stages of analysis. It is also unknown if the virus’s effects on the brain are lasting or temporary. Scientists have long understood that viruses interact with DNA, and further studies could shed more light on the role of the virus on cognition. “As more studies like this are conducted, I believe we’ll find out there’s even more interaction between viruses, bacteria and fungi that are either ingested or breathed into our noses and mouths and the overall human condition,” said Jordan Josephson, ear nose and throat specialist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, who was not involved in the study. “I believe this new research is just the tip of the iceberg in linking viruses in the human oral cavity to the development of various health conditions.”

Tourism players question on ban civil servants meeting at hotel

DENPASAR - The circles of tourism industry players in Bali questioned about the issuance of ban from organizing a meeting at hotel for civil servants. Such a policy will have an impact on the main revenue for the hospitality industry sourcing from the Meeting, Incentive, Convention and Exhibition (MICE). “Prohibiting civil servants from conducting a meeting at hotel goes up against the tourism promotion. Moreover, all the hotels have meeting rooms, ranging from the five star hotels to budget hotels. So, it is wrong to prohibit civil servants from organizing a meeting at hotels,” said Chairman of the Indonesia Congress and Convention Association (INCCA) of Bali Chapter, I.B. Surakusuma, in Denpasar. According to him, the government should not prohibit civil ser-

vants from organizing a meeting at hotel, but rather suppressed or diminished their budget, so that the government was still contributing to the advancement of tourism. “Necessarily, the budget must be minimized, where if the meeting previously held at five-star hotel is then downgraded to budget hotel. If they are banned to do so at hotel, where they will hold a meeting because most offices of the agency do not have a meeting room? Will they do it at hamlet hall?” he said.

He said the government should be careful in issuing the rules, so that the policy would not be troubling the tourism industry players. “If generalized, it also means that the minister should not be organizing a meeting at hotel. Then, what about the meetings involving foreign countries, are they treated equally? So, it is impossible for the civil servants not to organize a meeting,” he said. On that account, we will see first the development within three to six months ahead,” he said. policy. “We have to work harder. Probably Jokowi considers the state to have a large unused building so it is not necessary to look for a hotel for the meeting,” he said. As reported, President Joko Widodo would make budgetary efficiency later in his reign. It would be done by cutting the large amount of budget allocation. Some of them were by cutting off the budget of meeting and official trip. In the state budget draft 2015, the allocation for meeting reached IDR 18.1 trillion. BANGLI - The number of people living with HIV/AIDS in Bangli County shows a fairly high rate. Based on epidemiological data in Bangli Regency, the people living with HIV/AIDS in Bangli reach 172 cases. Even, of the total number, seven of them already died. MOSCOW — Russia signed a contract Tuesday to build two more nuclear reactors in Iran to be possibly followed by another six, a move intended to cement closer ties between the two nations. The deal comes less than two weeks ahead of the Nov. 24 deadline for Tehran to sign an agreement on its nuclear program with six world powers. Tuesday’s contract has no immediate relation to the talks that involve Russia and the United States, but it reflects Moscow’s intention to deepen its cooperation with Tehran ahead of possible softening of Western sanctions against Iran. Nuclear officials from the two countries signed a contract Tuesday for building two reactors at Iran’s first Russia-built nuclear plant in Bushehr. Sergei Kiriyenko, the head of Russia’s Rosatom state corporation, and Iran’s nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi also signed a protocol envisaging possible construction of two more reactors in Bushehr and another four in an undetermined location. It’s a turning point in the development of relations between our countries,” Salehi said after the signing, according to Russian news reports. Rosatom said in a statement that the construction of the new reactors will be monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency. As in the case of Bushehr’s first reactor that became operational in 2013, Russia will supply uranium fuel and then take it back for reprocessing — a provision intended to prevent a possibility of Iran using the spent fuel to build atomic weapons. A potential agreement between Iran and the six powers would ease Western sanctions against Iran’s economy if Tehran agrees to limit its uranium enrichment to a level that would make it unable to build nuclear weapons. Iran has dismissed Western suspicions that it was working covertly to develop nuclear weapons, insisted that its nuclear activities are aimed at peaceful energy demands and medical needs.

controls” at the five banks allowed their G10 forex traders “to put their banks’ interests ahead of those of their clients, other market participants and the wider UK financial system”. Global growth leads agenda at G-20 summit SYDNEY — Global growth is the buzzword for this weekend’s summit of leaders from the 20 biggest industrialized and developing economies and there are high expectations the gathering will deliver an ambitious plan to boost the world’s GDP by more than $2 trillion. When the Group of 20 finance ministers and central bankers met in February, they agreed to more than 900 policy initiatives aimed at lifting global GDP by 2 percent above expected levels over the next five years, potentially creating millions of new jobs. The G-20 has made finalizing this initiative its top priority for the weekend meeting in Brisbane, Australia. That is unsurprising given the stubborn lethargy of the global economy, which has struggled to recover since the 2008 financial crisis. China’s economy has slowed, Japan is in a malaise and Europe is teetering on the brink of recession. Many praised the G-20 for setting a specific, measurable goal. But others have criticized it as not being ambitious enough. Details of exactly how the nations will reach the growth target remain sketchy. Australian Treasurer and summit host Joe Hockey said the group agreed to focus on private sector-led growth, particularly from additional investment in infrastructure, to get the job done. Each country is expected to present a comprehensive growth strategy at the summit. This ngelawang or gallivanting show tradition was carried out every 5 years. “When people had a starvation, plague, or economic crisis, the sanctified effigies in the Pucak Padang Dawa would be escorted to perform gallivanting show,” he added. NEW DELHI — A team of doctors rushed to central India on Wednesday after at least 12 women died and dozens of others fell ill following sterilization surgery held as part of a free, nationwide program aimed at limiting births in the world’s second-most populous nation, officials said. The case highlights the risks women face in reproductive health in a country struggling with high population growth and widespread poverty. A total of 83 women, all villagers under the age of 32, had the operations Saturday as part of the federal government’s free sterilization campaign and were sent home that evening. But dozens later became ill and were rushed in ambulances to private hospitals in Bilaspur, a city in central Chhattisgarh state. By Wednesday morning, at least 12 women had died, officials said. The apparent cause of death was either blood poisoning or hemorrhagic shock, which occurs when a person has lost too much blood, state deputy health director Amar Singh said, though the preliminary results from autopsies were expected to be released Wednesday. Dozens of the women were still hospitalized Wednesday, including some in critical condition. “Their condition is very serious. Blood pressure is low,” said Dr. Ramesh Murty at CIMS hospital, one of the

facilities where the sick women were taken. MATARAM - At least 37 foreign nationals have been deported from the West Nusa Tenggara Province over the past ten months for violating immigration laws, including those married to Indonesians, stated a local immigration officer. “The misuse of social visit visa is the dominant issue with regard to immigration violation,” Head of the Supervision and Law Enforcement Division of the Mataram-based Immigration Office Indra Iskandar stated on Tuesday. He pointed out that visa violators were mainly from Australia and Malaysia. He further added that number of people deported this year

increased from 22 recorded in the previous year. JAKARTA - The bodies of two Indonesian women allegedly murdered by a British banker in Hong Kong arrived back home Tuesday, as one victim’s mother tearfully spoke of her “torment”. The mutilated corpses of Seneng Mujiasih and Sumarti Ningsih, both in their 20s, were found in the apartment of a 29-year-old securities trader earlier this month. Rurik Jutting, who until recently worked at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, was arrested after calling police to the scene, and has been charged with the women’s murder. On Tuesday afternoon, the women’s bodies arrived in the Indonesian capital Jakarta on a Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong, an AFP reporter at the city’s airport said. They were taken off the plane in wooden coffins and placed in ambulances. Ningsih’s body was being taken to her home town of Cilacap, in southern Java, accompanied by her brother, said foreign ministry official Krisna Djaelani. Mujiasih’s body would remain overnight at the airport before being flown to her family’s home on Muna island, central Indonesia, on Wednesday, said the official. The mother of Ningsih, whose

decaying body was found stuffed in a suitcase, wept as she told how the whole family was waiting to receive the body. “I’m so tormented,” Suratmi, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told AFP from Cilacap. “I will never accept that my daughter was tortured until she died. “Why must this be my daughter’s fate?” The victims were discovered in Jutting’s flat in the city’s Wanchai district in the early hours of November 1. Seneng was found naked in the living room, with knife wounds to her neck and buttocks. Sumarti’s decaying body was found hours later by police, stuffed into a suitcase on the apartment’s balcony. According to court documents, she was killed on October 27. On Monday, Jutting appeared in court for the second time since his arrest -- and flashed a grin as he left the hearing in a prison van after his case was adjourned for psychiatric reports. Hong Kong police are investigating whether the victims were sex workers, although their parents say they believed their children had been working at restaurants.

After six round-robin matches here in London there is yet to be a three-setter, but Federer’s 69-minute masterclass against Nishikori kept the capacity crowd enthralled. The 17-times grand slam champion needed an ace to fend off an early break point but once he broke Nishikori’s serve in the fourth game he was in complete control. Nishikori, so impressive against Murray on Sunday, showed some flashes of brilliance but was pressured into mistakes by Federer who racked up his 70th win of a stellar season that could yet see him return to world number one. “I’m happy, you know, after two matches I’m standing here with two wins. Morocco was thrown out of the 2015 African Cup of Nations and dumped as the host Tuesday after refusing to commit to the scheduled dates early next year because of fears over Ebola. The tournament in January and February will now have a new host country only two months before kickoff, the Confederation of African Football said after an emergency meeting at its Cairo headquarters. CAF didn’t announce the replacement host, but said it had received “some applications.” “These applications are currently under review, and the executive committee will finalize the selection of the successful national association shortly,” the African football body said in a statement. It didn’t name any of the candidates. South Africa, Egypt, Sudan and Ghana have all already indicated they are unwilling to replace Morocco, partly because of Ebola. Nigeria, Angola and Gabon have also been mentioned as possible stand-in hosts. The decisions by CAF were taken at a meeting that was forced by Morocco’s refusal to hold the tournament on the planned dates of Jan. 17-Feb. 8 because of the threat of the spread of Ebola. The disease has killed about 5,000 people in West Africa, and Morocco wanted the 16-team soccer event postponed until 2016 because of fears the deadly virus would arrive with supporters and other travelers. CAF repeatedly refused Morocco’s request to postpone the African Cup, the body’s main money-earning tournament, and gave the country until Saturday to commit to the planned dates. Morocco declined again. “The Royal Moroccan Football Federation reiterated its refusal to hold the competition on the dates

Morocco was thrown out of the 2015 African Cup of Nations and dumped as the host Tuesday after refusing to commit to the scheduled dates early next year because of fears over Ebola. The tournament in January and February will now have a new host country only two months before kickoff, the Confederation of African Football said after an emergency meeting at its Cairo headquarters. CAF didn’t announce the replacement host, but said it had received “some applications.” “These applications are currently under review, and the executive committee will finalize the selection of the successful national association shortly,” the African football body said in a statement. It didn’t name any of the candidates. South Africa, Egypt, Sudan and Ghana have all already indicated they are unwilling to replace Morocco, partly because of Ebola. Nigeria, Angola and Gabon have also been mentioned as possible stand-in hosts. The decisions by CAF were taken at a meeting that was forced by Morocco’s refusal to hold the tournament on the planned dates of Jan. 17-Feb. 8 because of the threat of the spread of Ebola. The disease has killed about 5,000 people in West Africa, and Morocco wanted the 16-team soccer event postponed until 2016 because of fears the deadly virus would arrive with supporters and other travelers. CAF repeatedly refused Morocco’s request to postpone the African Cup, the body’s main money-earning tournament, and gave the country until Saturday to commit to the planned dates. Nishikori, Asia’s first qualifier for the prestige event, would also be well-placed if he beats Raonic with ease, while Canadian Raonic needs a straight sets win to stand any chance of reaching the semis. Rather than needing calculators and algebra, Federer prefers to let his racket do the math and he was precise again on Tuesday as he outclassed U.S. Open runner-up Nishikori. After six round-robin matches here in London there is yet to be a three-setter, but Federer’s 69-minute masterclass against Nishikori kept the capacity crowd enthralled. The 17-times grand slam champion needed an ace to fend off an early break point but once he broke Nishikori’s serve in the fourth game he was in complete control. Nishikori, so impressive against Murray on Sunday, showed some flashes of brilliance but was pressured into mistakes by Federer who racked up his 70th win of a stellar season that could yet see him return to world number one. “I’m happy, you know, after two matches I’m standing here with two wins. Docs rush to help after India sterilization deaths

NEW DELHI — A team of doctors rushed to central India on Wednesday after at least 12 women died and dozens of others fell ill following sterilization surgery held as part of a free, nationwide program aimed at limiting births in the world’s second-most populous nation, officials said. The case highlights the risks women face in reproductive health in a country struggling with high population growth and widespread poverty. A total of 83 women, all villagers under the age of 32, had the operations Saturday as part of the federal government’s free sterilization campaign and were sent home that evening. But dozens later became ill and were rushed in ambulances to private hospitals in Bilaspur, a city in central Chhattisgarh state. By Wednesday morning, at least 12 women had died, officials said. The apparent cause of death was either blood poisoning or hemorrhagic shock, which occurs when a person has lost too much blood, state deputy health director Amar Singh said, though the preliminary results from autopsies were expected to be released Wednesday. Dozens of the women were still hospitalized Wednesday, including some in critical condition. “Their condition is very serious. Blood pressure is low,” said Dr. Ramesh Murty at CIMS hospital, one of the

facilities where the sick women were taken. The Chhattisgarh state government sent a plane to New Delhi overnight to pick up a team of four doctors “to ensure no time is lost” in treating the patients, Indian Health Secretary Lov Verma told Press Trust of India. India’s government — long concerned about pervasive poverty among its rapidly growing 1.3 billion population — performs millions of free sterilizations to both women and men who want to avoid the risk and cost of having a baby. The vast majority of patients are poor women who are usually paid a one-time incentive fee to undergo the surgery of about $10-$20, or about a week’s pay for a poor person in India. About 180 million people in the country still live on less than $1.25 a day. India has one of the world’s highest rates of sterilization among women, with about 37 percent undergoing such operations, compared with 29 percent in China, according to 2006 statistics reported by the United Nations. MATARAM - At least 37 foreign nationals have been deported from the West Nusa Tenggara Province over the past ten months for violating immigration laws, including those married to Indonesians, stated a local immigration officer. “The misuse of social visit visa is the dominant issue with regard to immigration violation,” Head of the Supervision and Law Enforcement Division of the Mataram-based Immigration Office Indra Iskandar stated on Tuesday. JAKARTA - The bodies of two Indonesian women allegedly murdered by a British banker in Hong Kong arrived back home Tuesday, as one victim’s mother tearfully spoke of her “torment”. The mutilated corpses of Seneng Mujiasih and Sumarti Ningsih, both in their 20s, were found in the apartment of a 29-year-old securities trader earlier this month. Rurik Jutting, who until recently worked at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, was arrested after calling police to the scene, and has been charged with the women’s murder. LONDON - Global regulators announced Wednesday $3.2 billion (2.5 billion euros) in fines against five major US and European banks for attempting to manipulate foreign exchange markets. The hefty fines, unveiled in London, Washington and Zurich, follow a worldwide probe into the scandal over the $5.3-trillion-per-day forex market, around 40 percent of which takes place in the British capital. When the Group of 20 finance ministers and central bankers met in February, they agreed to more than 900 policy initiatives aimed at lifting global GDP by 2 percent above expected levels over the next five years, potentially creating millions of new jobs. The G-20 has made finalizing this initiative its top priority for the weekend meeting in Brisbane, Australia. That is unsurprising given the stubborn lethargy of the global economy, which has struggled to recover since the 2008 financial crisis. China’s economy has slowed, Japan is in a malaise and Europe is teetering on the brink of recession. Many praised the G-20 for setting a specific, measurable goal. But others have criticized it as not being ambitious enough. Details of exactly how the nations will reach the growth target remain sketchy. Australian Treasurer and summit host Joe Hockey said the group agreed to focus on private sector-led growth, particularly from additional investment in infrastructure, to get the job done. Each country is expected to present a comprehensive growth strategy at the summit. No election need be called until 2016, but political insiders said Abe, whose support is relatively robust but falling, might seek to renew his mandate for another four years before taking unpopular steps such as restarting nuclear reactors and passing legislation to allow Japanese troops to fight abroad for the first time since World War Two. “This will be an election without a cause,” said one coalition lawmaker, adding it would make more sense

to seek a new mandate if Abe were to proceed with the tax hike, which most voters oppose. He said that possibility couldn’t be ruled out. Abe’s Liberal Democratic Partyled (LDP) coalition has almost no chance of losing its lower house majority given the weakness of the opposition camp, but could fall short of the two-thirds it has now, politicians said. Anniversary Election? Voter support for the LDP slipped to 36.6 percent in a survey by NHK public TV released on Monday. That dwarfed the 7.9 percent who backed the opposition Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), reflecting memories of the party’s three years in power from 2009, a period marked by policy flip-flops and missteps. The prime minister inherited the plan to raise the sales tax from his predecessor, Yoshihiko Noda. MOSCOW — Russia signed a contract Tuesday to build two more nuclear reactors in Iran to be possibly followed by another six, a move intended to cement closer ties between the two nations. The deal comes less than two weeks ahead of the Nov. 24 deadline for Tehran to sign an agreement on its nuclear program with six world powers. Tuesday’s contract has no immediate relation to the talks that involve Russia and the United States, but it reflects Moscow’s intention to deepen its cooperation with Tehran ahead of possible softening of Western sanctions against Iran. Nuclear officials from the two countries signed a contract Tuesday for building two reactors at Iran’s first Russia-built nuclear plant in Bushehr. Sergei Kiriyenko, the head of Russia’s Rosatom state corporation, and Iran’s nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi also signed a protocol envisaging possible construction of two more reactors in Bushehr and another four in an undetermined location. It’s a turning point in the development of relations between our countries,” Salehi said after the signing, according to Russian news reports. Rosatom said in a statement that the construction of the new reactors will be monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency. As in the case of Bushehr’s first reactor that became operational in 2013, Russia will supply uranium fuel and then take it back for reprocessing — a provision intended to prevent a possibility of Iran using the spent fuel to build atomic weapons. A potential agreement between Iran and the six powers would ease Western sanctions against Iran’s economy if Tehran agrees to limit its uranium enrichment to a level that would make it unable to build nuclear weapons. Iran has dismissed Western suspicions that it was working covertly to develop nuclear weapons, insisted that its nuclear activities are aimed at peaceful energy demands and medical needs.

PARIS - Scientists said Monday they had found a variant of a gene that confers a near five-fold protection against typhoid fever, which affects millions of people each year. The discovery, that came from screening the genomes of hundreds of infected people and healthy controls in Vietnam and Nepal, may aid the development of better vaccines for typhoid and other bacterial diseases, said the authors of a study published in Nature Genetics. “We found that carrying a particular form of the HLA-DRB1 gene provides natural resistance against

typhoid fever,” study co-author Sarah Dunstan of the University of Melbourne said in a statement. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 21 million people are infected with typhoid fever every year, and an estimated 216,000 to 600,000 die. It is caused by the Salmonella typhi or Paratyphi bacteria carried in contaminated food or water, said the study authors. The gene they found protects against infection by recognising proteins from invading bacteria, thus stimulating an immune response. Vaccines against S. typhi do exist, but are not always effective and

are not suitable for young children -- the group most at risk, according to the study authors. “Consequently, these vaccines are not widely deployed in the populations with the greatest need,” they wrote. “Notably, there is currently no licensed vaccine against enteric fever caused by S. Paratyphi pathovars, potentially constituting a huge problem as the incidence of S. Paratyphi A infection is increasing in many countries across Asia.” The team said their discovery may lead to “improvements in the rational design of vaccines” for this and other bacterial infections.

A study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that the virus was present in about half of 92 human subjects studied, and those who had it performed worse on certain basic tasks. The virus, known as Acanthocystis turfacea Chlorella virus 1, or ATCV-1, also appeared to limit the cognitive abilities of mice. The mice had a harder time navigating a maze and noticing new objects in their surroundings after they were infected. It remains unclear if the virus was truly driving the drop in mental functioning. Researchers have not yet shown the cause and effect between the virus and the intelligence results. “At this point we do not think that this virus should be considered as a threat to individual or public health,” said lead researcher Robert Yolken, a virologist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. “We do think that there is a need for additional medical and scientific studies of the effects of infectious agents which are common in the environment on human health and cognition,” Yolken told AFP. The virus was found by accident while scientists were analyzing microbes in the throats of healthy humans for a different study. Experts have been studying viruses similar to ATCV-1 for 35 years, said senior author James Van Etten of the University of Nebraska, an expert on algal viruses. Van Etten joined the research four years ago when Johns Hopkins

scientists found ATCV-1’s DNA sequences in the brain tissue of people who had died with mental disorders such as schizophrenia. “This finding was certainly surprising to us,” Van Etten told AFP. “These viruses are ubiquitous in fresh water ponds and streams throughout the world,” Van Etten said. He noted that the virus -- previously thought to only infect algae -could make its way into the human body when people swallow water while swimming. There might also be another host in nature, such as mosquito larvae, he said. But the nature of the disease is still in the early stages of analysis. It is also unknown if the virus’s effects on the brain are lasting or temporary. Scientists have long understood that viruses interact with DNA, and further studies could shed more light on the role of the virus on cognition. “As more studies like this are conducted, I believe we’ll find out there’s even more interaction between viruses, bacteria and fungi that are either ingested or breathed into our noses and mouths and the overall human condition,” said Jordan Josephson, ear nose and throat specialist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, who was not involved in the study. “I believe this new research is just the tip of the iceberg in linking viruses in the human oral cavity to the development of various health conditions.”

SEMARAPURA - The trial of mutilation case was held again, Tuesday (Nov 11). The trial presented witnesses from the victim’s family Diana Sari. Among others, there were her father Asikin and mother Sahni. Before starting the trial, the victim’s parents sued the judge of Semarapura District Court to impose death penalty on the defendant. Asikin even added that after the death penalty, Fikri should be imposed with chopping penalty as a just one for his action. Asikin assessed the defendant Fikri already acted very viciously against her daughter and it was inexcusable. Asikin seemed still in shocked condition after missing his eldest daughter in such sadistic manner. He accused if the defendant had planned the murder and

Both of them stopped their testimony several times considering the terrible fate afflicting their daughter. After hearing the testimony of witnesses, Fikri justified the entire information submitted by Asikin and Sahni. As planned, in the recent trial the prosecutor planned to present 11 witnesses. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.
