WASHINGTON - Katy Perry will perform at the half-time show for American football’s Super Bowl championship, one of the nation’s most watched TV spectacles, Billboard reported Friday. The music industry Bible, gave no details about the planned event, but according to a Wall Street Journal report in August, pop diva Perry had been on a shortlist of potential Super Bowl performers that also included Coldplay and Rihanna. The game will be played in Phoenix, Arizona on February 1, 2015 to crown

the champions of America’s best beloved sport. Representatives for Perry and the National Football League did not return email requests for comment. The last Super Bowl halftime extravaganza, which featured Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, drew a record 111.5 million TV viewers.

Again, hundreds of hectares of Mt. Agung forest terribly on fire

AMLAPURA - Hundreds of hectares of Mt. Agung forest in the northern to the eastern slopes were estimated to be on fire. Severe fire was seen to occur until Saturday afternoon (Oct 11) and dozens of large and small hotspots were visible from the foot of the mountain. Blazes looked to get near the top of Mt. Agung and thick smoke billowed. Responding to the incessant severe fire on the Mt. Agung forest, the Head of Karangasem Forestry and Plantation Agency, Komang Subratayasa, said last Saturday that the Division Head of Forest Protection and staff as well as the resort forest management (RPH) had come down to location. On last Saturday afternoon, he planned to visit the location to do monitoring and checking. “We do not know about the acreage of burned forest,” he said. “From the monitoring made, Merta said the location of fire was in the protected forest at the foot to the summit of Mt. Agung perched in the area of Kedampal at Datah village and Kubu village,” he said. He said the fire burning the forest at the foot of Mt. Agung, precisely at Kedampal, had been attempted to be put out. However, the large flames approaching the top of Mt. Agung were hard to be reached by people. Aside from situating on the altitude of about 2,000 meters above sea level, the location was

also very steep. Meanwhile, hot weather and high winds blowing on the mountain caused the blazing fires to spread quickly. From the monitoring since a few days ago, the forest of Mt. Agung in the west of the subdistrict was on fire. Allegedly the hotspots were not extinguished, so that they continued to expand. The forest fire spread due to hot weather as well as dried shrubs and grasses so that they were flammable. Such condition was compounded by strong winds on the mountain. Meanwhile, from Saturday around ten o’clock in the morning for some an hour, the forest in the area of the National Rehabilitation Week 1984 whose tree planting was attended by the Vice President Umar Wirahadikusumah was on fire. It spread across the area of about one hectare. As planned, the forests had actually been declared as a tourism forest and equipped with a deer enclosure. Then, the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) team

assisted by residents and the noncommissioned military personnel of Nawa Kerti village also came down to location to extinguish the fire. The report was submitted to the Fire Department by Putu Bagor, hamlet chief of Bau Kauhan, Nawa Kerti village. His house is the closest to the location of fire incident and bordered with the National Rehabilitation Week forest. Acting headman of Nawa Kerti, Nyoman Karta Rieg, said that since the sound of fire was rowdy and local people were panicky, he then came down to location. Dozens of residents coalesced into the Purasana deer-keeping farmer group got involved in extinguishing the fire. Otherwise, the fire was not estimated to have expanded. Actually, previously a total of 21 members of the deer-keeping farmer group at the Pusarana tourist attraction held a meeting. At that time, one of the members burned leaves of forest trees in the surrounding area of the National Rehabilitation Week building whose

roof had been destroyed. The leaves were burned because they caused the environment to look dirty. However, Bagor and Rieg said the fire was actually extinguished partially. Bagor suspected the source of fire burning the bamboo clumps and generating boisterous explosion was from the flame of the burning cigarette butt or rubbish combus-

tion blown by the wind. The observation found some points of former rubbish combustions. For instance, the flame could still be found in the east of the National Rehabilitation Week building. Allegedly, the fire of the rubbish combustion expanded and spread around the area, so that it kindled the fire incident. (013)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

A healthy soak in Saharan sands

MERZOUGA - As the morning sun rises over the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi in the Sahara, men and women dig holes for tourists who want to bury themselves in the sand. Decades ago, tribal nomads settled here, living a traditional desert existence that has now had to adapt to changing circumstance. The dunes of Merzouga tower over the small community in southeastern Morocco, where the Berber Ait Atta tribe now makes a brisk living from tourism. The formerly nomadic tribesmen have for years been running hotels and restaurants in Merzouga, a key stop on the Moroccan tourist trail on the edge of a sea of sand dunes. Now they’re even turning to the sands themselves to attract visitors. For around 10 minutes visitors are buried neck-deep in the hot sand for therapy said to cure those who suffer from rheumatism, lumbago, polyarthritis and some skin disorders. The therapy has the same effect as a sauna session, helping purge the body of poisonous toxins, according to those tribesmen such as Abdessalam Sadoq who now work in wellness tourism. “We offer every type of tourism here, but especially for health,” he said. Making a living was not always easy for the descendants of the Ait Atta nomads, and over the decades the sons and daughters of those who roamed the desert on camels have had to attune themselves to more modern ways.

The Ait Atta once accumulated riches from trans-Saharan commerce, but now all that remains of this past is a road sign pointing towards Timbuktu, a mere 52 days away by camel. Their way of life ended after Morocco became a French protectorate in 1912, with the development of mining in the region, the emergence of urban centres and demarcation of the nearby border with Algeria. Once-nomadic tribes had to find a new livelihood, and turned to cultivating date palms and tourism in the second half of the past century. Visitors in search of a cure do not come only from abroad: many Moroccans also firmly believe in the power of the desert. “I really feel much better, and each year I come back here to spend a week,” said sciatica sufferer Ali Kallamouche from the central town of Beni Mellal. A sand bath at Merzouga costs up to 10 euros ($13), and when “patients” shake off the sand they are wrapped in hot towels to avoid the shock of a sudden cooling of the body. Many come not just for the cure but also for the breathtaking sunsets

over Merzouga’s erg -- the shifting sand dunes 20 kilometres (12 miles) long, five kilometres wide and up to 150 metres (500 feet) high. Camel safaris and stays in the desert under canvas with the region’s Berber and Arab tribes are still a tourist staple, but with the economy biting, industry workers had to look elsewhere to attract business. “People come for sand baths... and to taste the local dishes we make using medicinal plants and herbs,” said Sadoq, who also heads an association to promote tourism in the Sahara. Tourism is a cornerstone of Morocco’s economy -- contributing 10 percent of gross domestic product. According to market experts, it is also growing, thanks to the development of wellness tourism. In September, Morocco hosted the Global Spa and Wellness Summit where industry experts said the sector expanded globally last year by 12.5 percent, generating almost $500 billion. Morocco topped the Middle East and North Africa list in health tourism, with the industry growing more than 67 percent since 2007.

NEW YORK - Anne-Sophie Pic, one of top five women chefs in the world, is gearing up to take the fickle, competitive world of New York gastronomy by storm in opening a new restaurant next year. Named best female chef in 2011 at the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards run by British magazine Restaurant and the only three-star woman chef in France, Pic spoke exclusively to AFP in an interview during a busy stay in New York overseeing her new project. On the ground floor of a gleaming glass tower at 510 Madison Avenue she will open a MetCafe and on the second floor, a New York branch of “Dame de Pic” which opened in Paris two years ago. “It will be a gastronomic restaurant with 50 covers, between a chic bistro and a three-star restaurant,” the 45-year-old told AFP in the empty space, bathed in light with high ceilings. “It pleases me a lot. It’s new, everything has to be built, it’s the magnificent side of the project,” she said in jeans, sneakers and a white shirt, her hair swept back in a neat little bun. Rents for this kind of space in this neighborhood start at around $50,000 a month and the venture is not without risk in a city, with thousands of restaurants where fashions come and go. Some great French chefs have come a cropper. Only last week was celebrity French chef Daniel Boulud downgraded, losing the third star he won in 2010 from the prestigious Michelin guide. Polite, modest and respectful, Pic lets out a laugh. “I am not coming into conquered

territory! I’m aware that New York is a magical place, but difficult. My approach in coming here is to be humble,” she said. She speaks English, she knows the city and stayed several months when she was a student. She likes the pace, the “good energy” and likes to visit with her husband, Davis Sinapian, Pic CEO. They are a couple who complement each other well: she does the food and he runs the business, which includes five restaurants, and employs 200 people. Another 100 staff will be added in New York. The crown jewels in their empire is Maison Pic, the family-run restaurant that Pic inherited after her father died, a three-star triumph in the southeastern French town of Valence. There is the one-star Dame de Pic in Paris and a two-star restaurant in Lausanne. “I find that the trends in New York are very close to French trends,” Pic says, talking about passion for all things organic and growing interest in vegetables in America’s largest city. She says her life is in Valence, where she is investing three million euros ($3.8 million) in a new, totally glass kitchen and a 60-squaremeter (646-square-foot) laboratory kitchen. A team will take care of the day to day running of the New York restaurant and she will stick to creating the menu. She will come “as often as necessary to ensure that the standard is consistent, as I do in the three other restaurants.” She comes from a family of celebrated chefs. Grandfather Andre won three Michelin stars for Maison Pic in 1934 and father Jacques was made a three-star chef in 1973.

In the January to July period in 2013, Bali shipped 3,617.9 tons of the products, which increased

to 4,244.4 tons in the same period in 2014. The export of canned fish products from Pangembengan, Jembrana District, rose by 152.53 percent in the October to December period in 2013, with as much as 2.45 million tons of the products shipped. This was the highest figure recorded in the last three years, raising the value of the fish sub-sector at the end of 2013.

DENPASAR - The Forensic Medicine of Sanglah Hospital received a body of foreigner from Austria, Koeck Leonard, 60, Friday (Oct 10) around 09:00 a.m. The foreigner was found dead at Kalibukbuk village, Buleleng subdistrict/county, Thursday (Oct 9). Then, an external examination was performed by a team of forensic medicine, Saturday morning. Division Head of Sanglah Hospital Forensic Medicine, Ida Bagus Putu Alit, said that from the results of examination, the victim was known to have died 8 to 15 hours before being checked. No signs of violence were found on the victim’s body. “We did not find any signs of violence on the victim’s body,” he explained. “At that time, we could not know for sure the cause of the victim’s death,” he explained. To determine the cause of death, he said, it should be performed an autopsy on the body.

He added that to perform an autopsy his party was still awaiting the approval of the family, consulate as well as police department. He said that so far his party was still coordinating with the consulate via telephone related to the victim’s death. “It is said the victim died on the beach so that it is considered unreasonable. To that end, we have also made coordination with the consulate related to the body,” he explained. Alit said the consulate general would see directly the body of Koeck Leonard in the mortuary installation on Sunday afternoon. ST. LOUIS — Thousands of people gathered Saturday for a second day of organized rallies and marches protesting Michael Brown’s death and other fatal police shootings. Several dozen protesters in St. Louis chanted on the sidewalk as Cardinals baseball team was hosting the San Francisco Giants in the first game of the National League Championship Series. A diverse crowd joined forces as part of a national campaign called Ferguson October. Wilson remains free and on administrative leave while a St. Louis County grand jury weighs whether Wilson should face criminal charges. led to a nationwide dialogue about interactions between minorities and police. “We still are knee deep in this situation,” said Kareem Jackson, a St. Louis rap artist and community organizer. “We have not packed up our bags, we have not gone home.’” On Saturday evening, a smaller group of demonstrators joined Brown’s mother at a prayer vigil and protest outside the Ferguson apartment complex where her son was shot and killed two months ago. GENEVA - Weakened by its failure in July to seal a key deal on a global customs pact amid continued wrangling with India, the World Trade Organization is at a crossroads, observers say. “We are in a unique situation in the history of the organisation,” a European diplomat said on condition of anonymity ahead of a meeting later this month that others warn could fatally undermine the global trade body if the deal is not rescued. A draft of the so-called Trade Facilitation Agreement emerged at the WTO’s Bali conference in December last year and was meant to be finalised at the end of July. But sparring between members, notably over demands from India that the world body gives the green light to the developing power’s stockpiling of food, have put the long-sought deal on ice. India and its supporters say such

stockpiling is essential to ensure poor farmers and consumers survive in the cut-throat world of business, while Western countries meanwhile have raised concerns that this food could be syphoned onto global markets, skewing trade. If WTO gives in to India’s demands, this would “create a very bad precedent”, the European diplomat said, warning this would open a Pandora’s box as other member

states would certainly take the move as a licence to change positions and block texts they had helped pass by consensus. “How could we know if another member state won’t say: we don’t accept anymore what we have agreed?” the diplomat said. The Europeans staunchly insist that Bali cannot be renegotiated, the diplomat said, warning that WTO’s credibility was at stake. It took nearly a decade to conclude the trade facilitation part of the talks, which began in 2004, and the organisation is loath to return to the drawing board. At Bali, India was granted the right to continue its food stockpiling subsidies until a final solution is found by the end of 2017. But last July the country insisted it wanted the issue conclusively settled by the end of this year. Western countries however insist the trade facilitation deal must move in lockstep with other parts of the

Doha deal on agricultural and industrial goods. Late last month, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told US President Barack Obama he hoped for a deal “soon” to allow the blocked trade facilitation deal to go forward. “India supports trade facilitation. However, I also expect that we are able to find a solution that takes care of our concern on food security. WTO Director-General Roberto Azevedo has been tirelessly campaigning to save the deal, which would streamline global customs procedures, and, he claims, create billions of dollars in benefits each year. “We must resolve the current impasse and begin to define the path forward for the WTO,” he told business leaders in Toronto this week.

HONG KONG — By road, the little apartments are nearly an hour from central Hong Kong and the protests that have swept through it. Twice that long if you take the subway, which is how most people commute from places like Tuen Mun, a cluster of high-rise apartments built in a once-rural corner of Hong Kong’s sprawling New Territories. But the apartments are also affordable, at least in the way that any real estate can be affordable in one of the world’s most expensive cities. The cheapest sell for 2.9 million Hong Kong dollars, or about $375,000. They are slightly larger than the average American kitchen. Young couples are desperate to buy them. So when student-led prodemocracy protests began roiling Hong Kong two weeks ago, realtors saw a reflection of something else: the frustrations of a generation increasingly unable to afford the lives their parents had. “They want to vent their anger. Their voice was not heard in the past,” said Adam Pang, a real estate salesman in Tuen Mun, one of nearly a dozen New Towns built over the past few decades to try to relieve the immense housing pressure in this former British colony of 7 million people. In this city built on commerce, the political protests have churned up deeper questions, exposing a series of economic divides and deep unease over whether the territory’s unique identity can survive in China’s

ever-growing shadow. The protesters’ central demand is the right to freely choose Hong Kong’s top official in inaugural 2017 elections, as outlined in the mini-constitution that took effect when Hong Kong returned to China’s control in 1997. But while Beijing allows far more freedom in Hong Kong than it does on the mainland, it is not leaving the territory’s’ leadership in the hands of voters, insisting that candidates for the chief executive position first be screened — as they are now — by a committee dominated by the territory’s pro-China elite. It’s a standoff that has brought tens of thousands of demonstrators into Hong Kong’s streets, occupying some of the city’s busiest roads. If they don’t get what they want, “then we’ll remain here, and we’ll see who has the most patience,” said Veronica Chan, a 21-year-old marketing student who has spent weeks at the largest protest site, on the edges of Hong Kong’s financial district. But look a little deeper, talk to people across Hong Kong, and other fault lines quickly emerge. A few blocks away, in an upscale bar in the financial district, a young investment banker in a pinstriped suit sipped his whiskey and talked about the protests. “What this is really about is Hong Kong people refusing to acknowledge they are Chinese,” said Raymond Tam, who co-owns the bar with friends. “It’s quite stupid. Hong Kong and China are like a quarreling couple.”

Cyclone Hudhud, described as “very severe” by India’s meteorological department, had winds of 195 kilometers (120 miles) per hour when the edge of the storm hit land, Chief Staff Officer of India’s Eastern Naval Command Rear Admiral S.K. She said the power of attorney would later be handed over to two organizations that would represent them to file a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court namely the Commission of Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) and Perludem (the Organization for Elections and Democracy) grouped in the Coalition Against Pilkada Law. “We invite people or citizens who reject the Pilkada law to participate in it. We have so far been mobilizing public participation to reject the Pilkada law,” she said.

In the peaceful action the Kita Bergerak (We Move) group helped the two organizations to collect people who wished to submit a power of attorney to reject the law. “We have collected IDs and muster public participation. Today we called on those who have submitted their IDs and those who wished to but have not yet done it to sign a power of attorney to be submitted for the lawsuit,” she said. “The field action is part of a series of actions that have been carried out at the same place since last week consisting of ID collection in the field as well as on-line and by e-mail,” she said. Besides submitting a power of attorney people who reject the Pilkada law have also given a little finger print as a sign of their rejection of the law. The House of Representatives passed the Pilkada bill into law re-

cently through a vote changing the current direct system of elections of provincial governors, district heads and city mayors into an indirect one through regional legislative assemblies (DPRD). The Democrat Party and its general chairman President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono received harsh criticism following the passage of the bill after the party walked out of the vote allowing the proponents of the bill to win. In connection with that President Yudhoyono has issued a regulation in lieu of the law locally called Perppu. However it will only be effective it is approved by DPR which is now controlled by the Red-White coalition of parties that support the new Pilkada law. The Red-White coalition was the supporter of Prabowo Subianto in the presidential election on July 9 that he lost to Joko Widodo.

Government to build $263 million sea wall to protect capital Reuters

JAKARTA - Indonesia on Thursday officially launched a $263 million project to build a giant sea wall along the coast of its capital, Jakarta, in an attempt to protect businesses and homes from flooding. Last year’s rainy season brought Jakarta to a standstill, causing a river in the city to breach its banks and swamp the central business district, leaving thousands stranded and causing $580 million in damage. With 40 percent of Jakarta already below sea level, the situation is only expected to worsen for the city of 10 million people as the ground slowly subsides due to excessive pumping of groundwater. a promise of President-elect Joko Widodo during his term as the city’s governor. “This project is a must,” chief economics minister Chairul Tanjung told reporters after a ground-breaking ceremony. “If we don’t do anything, in 2050 Jakarta will sink due to rapid ground subsidence and rising sea level.” The project, which was designed in consultation with infrastructure and environment officials from the Netherlands, should be able to resist high tides and rising sea level at least until 2030. The first phase of the project government will include an 8 km (5 mile) wall along the coast, which forms the city’s northern edge.

Marc Marquez retained his MotoGP title with a fighting second place finish in the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday, the dominant Spaniard securing a fourth global title in five years at his Honda team’s home Motegi circuit. By claiming 20 points for a second-place finish, the 21-year-old stretched his championship lead over Italian Valentino Rossi of Yamaha and his team mate and compatriot Dani Pedrosa to an unassailable 82 points with three races remaining. “I am really happy to win the title on Honda’s home circuit and I offer my thanks to my family and to the team for giving me the best material and motivation to win the world title,” an elated Marquez told reporters. Yamaha’s double former world champion Jorge Lorenzo claimed victory on the day 1.638 seconds ahead of Marquez, who overtook Rossi with eight laps remaining and held off the Italian to secure the title. Pedrosa finished fourth. It was the second consecutive win for Spaniard Lorenzo after his victory in the rain-hit Aragon Grand Prix last month. Catalan Marquez continues to blaze a trail through every class he has raced in, first winning the 125cc title in 2010, then the Moto2 crown in 2012 before claiming back-toback MotoGP titles. He could have settled the championship earlier in the season after

registering a record-equalling 10 consecutive wins but crashes in San Marino and Alcaniz in the last two races delayed his coronation. “It’s difficult to explain right now but I have been in MotoGP for two years and won two titles. Scoring drought an old problem for new-look Germany

Argentina continued to press but at the other end Neymar should have made it two after a mazy dribble through the heart of the defence took him clear only to offer a tame shot that went wide after he perhaps attempted one trick too many. The Argentines, runners-up at the World Cup, were gifted an opportunity to draw level four minutes before halftime when they were awarded a soft penalty by Chinese official Fan Qi.

BERLIN - World champions Germany will be desperate to bounce back with home win over Ireland next week to recover from a shock 2-0 defeat to Poland in their Euro 2016 qualifier on Saturday but in order to achieve that, they need to start scoring goals. The Germans wasted a plethora of golden opportunities in Warsaw before slumping to their first ever loss to Poland, a stunning defeat that sent them tumbling down to third spot in qualifying Group D. Failing to score is not a new problem

for Germany, who encountered the issue as recently as this summer’s World Cup with coach Joachim Loew switching his formation midway through the tournament to promote Miroslav Klose as a lone striker. The results were devastating for their opponents as the Germans raced to a fourth World Cup triumph. But Klose cannot add to his record goal tally for Germany, having retired after the World Cup, and Loew has to figure out how his team can make their total domination around the rest of the pitch count in front of goal. “We have to look ahead to Tuesday

and Ireland and make sure we show a good reaction,” said Loew, who only had six players in his lineup from the side that started the World Cup final in July. “We only played on one goal but could not score,” he said.

It would be far too premature to draw any conclusions on the state of the new German team given the large number of injury absences, including Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mesut Ozil and Marco Reus to name but a few. With only one natural forward, Borussia Moenchengladbach’s Max Kruse, in the squad but on the bench on Saturday, Loew will have to come up with a more effective plan if they are to beat Ireland in Gelsenkirchen. “We just failed to score and given the amount of chances we had it was a joke,” Germany defender Mats Hummels lamented. With three points from two qualifiers so far, Germany are well aware this is a long campaign and a maiden defeat to Poland, however damaging to their pride, is not a total disaster. “It was just not our day,” Goetze said. “On Tuesday, we will win, get the three points and the table will look a lot different.”
