North Korea leader’s oldest son says opposes dynastic succession Reuters
SEOUL – The oldest son of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il says he is opposed to the idea of dynastic succession in his country but wishes the best for his brother who has been chosen by their father as heir. Kim Jong-nam, who is known to live in China and Macau, told Japan’s TV Asahi that he personally had no interest in becoming leader, indicating there was no power struggle between the siblings who are believed to have different mothers. “Personally, I am against thirdgeneration dynastic succession,”
Kim Jong-nam said in an interview with TV Asahi on October 9, the day before a large military parade in Pyongyang where his brother took center-stage and made his national debut. “But I think there were internal factors. I think we should adhere to it if there were internal factors involved.” The portly oldest son of leader Kim Jong-il has been thought to have fallen out of his father’s favor, especially after he was deported from Japan on suspicion of trying to enter Japan with forged travel documents to go to Tokyo Disneyland. Bali News Grandiose ritual of Mamungkah and Mupuk Pedagingan at Demayu Gianyar (Bali Post)— Demayu Customary Village, Singakerta, Ubud, organized a Mamungkah, Mupuk Pedagingan, Ngenteg Linggih, Mapedudusan Agung and Ngusaba Nini ritual in the temple of local village. The procession had been set up since 6 months ago on account of the great spirit of unity and oneness of the Demayu Customary Village. In addition, the ritual was held because they had accomplished the building renovation activities pursuant to the Tri Hita Karana concept in the territory of Demayu Customary Village. The series of Mamungkah, Mupuk Pedagingan, Ngenteg Linggih, Pedudusan Agung, Ngusaba Desa and Ngusaba Nini had started since June 26. Commenced by saying acknowledgement prayers (atur piuning) at village trinity temples on Monday (Oct 11), it was resumed with Tawur Agung exorcism ritual and the calling on deities or Ida Bathara involving thousands of devotees. The event was attended by Deputy Governor of Bali Anak Agung Puspayoga, Deputy Chairman of Bali House, Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI Bali), Gianyar Regent Cok Ace and prominent royal relatives of Ubud Palace, Lodtunduh and others. Deputy Governor of Bali Puspayoga, when reading the speech of Governor of Bali, expected the greatness of Bali and majesty of God should be grateful as we had been born on the island of a thousand temples and rich culture. He invited all devotees to maintain the unique tradition in this world so they would not disappear and go away. As Svadharma or vocation of devotees, undertaking yajña ritual denoted a mandatory assignment in accordance with scriptural teachings and Tri Hita Karana concept. High waves hamper the installation of breakwater works Semarapura (Bali Post)—
Natural disturbances in the form of high waves, in fact, really became one of the obstacles impeding the continuation works of the mainland Klungkung pier located at the former Cclass excavation site. The third phase work in the form of breakwater installation was impeded by tidal waves. The three-meter high waves once stopped the workers to work and they should wait until the wave condition turned normal. It was admitted by the Site Manager, Ayie Wahyudin, Monday (Oct 11). According to Ayie, the waves indeed became one of the obstacles for the implementation of field project. When the waves went higher, the workers might stop to install the breakwater. He said that it was carried out to maintain the workers’ safety. “But, when the waves turn normal, despite at 2:00 a.m. (early days), we should work again (overtime),” he said. Obstacles in the form of waves could come every day. However, the timing was indefinite and unpredictable. “Anyway, when the operator of heavy equipment feels unsafe to continue the work, of course, we suggested him to stop,” he added. Nevertheless, despite obstacles, the Site Manager of the project confirmed that it did not necessarily mean if the work completely stopped. The workers that should complete the installation could be diverted to another work such as tidying up the materials and conveying them from dropping area to the installation site. (kmb20)

Coming to Denpasar Court to reject execution plan Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Dozens of employees of PT Dewata Royal Internasional thronged the Denpasar District Court on Monday (Oct 11) to deliver an open letter to the Head of the Denpasar District Court. Their arrival aimed to express the rejection against the execution plan or forcible evacuation of Aston Bali Resort & Spa scheduled to take place on Tuesday by bailiff of the Denpasar District Court. In the open letter distributed to other session visitors, they rejected the execution plan of the hotel evacuation by considering that Aston Bali Resort & Spa remained in the lawsuit both in the Denpasar District Court and discretionary review level of the Supreme Court. They also worried if the execution would remain to be undertaken by force, so that it could be ensured to disadvantage the reputation of Aston Bali Resort & Spa, both in the eyes of domestic and overseas customers whose occupancy rate reached 98 percent. The arrival of those employees was under coordination of Badung Tourism Labor Union (SPSI) chaired by Wayan Wenan. They had time to make speeches in front of the lobby of the Denpasar District Court. In the oration conducted in
successive turns, they essentially remained to have objection to the execution plan of forcible evacuation. “I cannot imagine the situation tomorrow, if the Denpasar District Court persisted to execute unanimously,” he said. Following the speeches, the employees were then invited to have a dialogue by the Head of Denpasar District Court Jhon Piter, who on the occasion was accompanied by the Clerk Ngurah Arya Winaya. In the dialog designed to take place amicably, a heated debate occurred in relation to the certainty of the execution. Clerk of the Denpasar District Court Ngurah Arya Winaya stated the execution should have to take place as long as there had been no request from the Commercial Court of Surabaya. Implementation of the
previous execution was preceded by submitting the warning to the defendant of execution. Similar matter was also conveyed by the Head of Denpasar District Court Jhon Piter. This substitute of Nyoman Sutama also provided information that PT. Karya Teknik Hotelindo was ready to receive the employees and they would be given severance. Additionally, they also invited the employees to joint with the new management or if they wished to leave, it did not matter. On that occasion, the employees were determined to survive all out in facing every execution of forcible evacuation to Aston Bali Resort & Spa, even though they should sacrifice their life. Pasut Beach Worrying Tabanan, DenPost
The Pasut Beach condition in Banjar Pasut, Tibubiu Village, Kerambitan Sub district is worrying. Besides the nature factor, the beach’s damage is also caused by the sand digging activity that keeps going on. It is pitiful that it is still going on as there is no clear step taken by the government while the beach is still visited by many tourists. Now, the saddening view is clear to see. The wave supports made from concrete have broken down while the coconut trees on the shores were dragged as abrasion been happening. Not yet those rubbish spreading around. More over, the abrasion has made a villa’s foundation near to the shore holed. The abrasion was caused by the sands robbing done by irresponsible individuals that’s been going on the past two years. It is very pitiful, this robbery was protected by an individual from the village and said it is for the subak (village irrigation). More over a local resident almost excommuni-
cated as suspected to have been giving information to the local police or council. A Pasut resident, Ketut Arsanayasa, confirmed the situation. The man who’s usually called Sadam admitted worried of the condition as it’s worsening if it doesn’t get any treatment. Also the fact Head of Indonesia Fishermen Group (HNSI) for Tabanan did not decline this condition that is caused by the sand robbery that is still going on. Sadam regrets there are no concrete steps from the connecting agencies including the police, “This is dangerous. If not taken care soon, it could get worse.” (122)
Disciplinary Not Continued Wild Huts Back Again at Digging C The disciplinary on the former Digging C that was held by Justice Team of Klunkung Government, is no longer done. Which so, those wild huts are back and totaled up to hundreds of units. Those huts were built in groups and spread in some points with people from Banyuwangi and Lombok living in it. A supervision done on Monday (11/10) revealed that some have lived there for decades and moreover from they were kids, growing, married and have kids. “I have lived here 17 years,” Supiyati admitted. The mother of one and three grandchildren from Banyuwangi admitted living here is not comfortable with the many threats targeting her especially when there’s flood on the former digging area. Also the hut is not suitable for living, being only made from bamboo for walls and grasses for roofs. Inside it, it’s for kitchen and bedroom. The environment is not healthy ei-
ther as those living there do their bathing, washing and becoming their water closet, all in the area nearby their huts, “What can I do. I came to Bali with no skills. I only can dig or sand filterer. But I still have to find money.” Working as sand filterer, everyday they’ll get income from IDR 15 Thousand to 30 Thousand. Besides for the children school fee, they also take out IDR 10 thousands for their Non-Resident fee and IDR 50 Thousands for electricity fee per month. The same thing admitted by Suyadi from West Lombok. The 46 years old man have lived there long enough and sometimes go back to Lombok to visit his children who are left in Lombok. So far, he worked as sand laborer with unstable income, “If there are many materials, the income is great. When there’s none, income is little too.” (kmb20)

Due to the heavy rain pouring at Yehembang last Sunday (10/10) night causing river Tibusambi, Yeh Embang Kangin, Mendoyo to overflow. It is suspected to have happened due to the forest above it has its function damaged. The burning issue on changing forests to become
gardens in the past few years has caused no more big trees to support the soils. Some local residents there have said on Monday (11/10) that this is the worst flash flood ever happened. As rain pours down there was no sign there will be any flash flood more over happening in the midnight. The water overflowed the gardens and swept all items in the river border in-
cluding unmoved husbandries, “Many cages were dragged and damaged,” said a resident, Ni Wayan Sari. When actually the cage was 20 meters away from the river’s mouth yet all those near it have been damaged. At some points the river’s support were gone also a road connecting Tibusambi and a village under it got holed and almost broken. All road users are having dif-
ficulties to get access. in the early morning I heard flash flood and the cows sank and died.” This incident cost a loss of IDR 8 Million. China’s jailed Nobel winner gets better food: wife Associated Press Writer
BEIJING – China accused foreign governments Tuesday of interfering in its political system by praising the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to an imprisoned dissident, while his wife said prison authorities had started giving him better food. Democracy campaigner Liu Xiaobo’s wife, Liu Xia, said in a rare phone interview with The Associated Press that she herself faces restrictions on whom she can meet and must be accompanied by police escort whenever she leaves her home. She said her husband’s brother told her that the prison started providing Liu Xiaobo with better food on Monday, serving him individually prepared food accompanied by rice rather than a portion of food cooked in a large pot for many prisoners, which is usually of poor quality. There was no immediate indication that any other prison conditions faced by Liu had improved, however. In naming him, the Norwegianbased Nobel committee honored Liu’s more than two decades of advocacy of human rights and peaceful democratic change — from demonstrations for democracy at Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in 1989 to a manifesto for political reform that he co-authored in 2008 and which led to his latest prison term. Beijing reacted angrily to Friday’s
announcement awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to Liu, calling him a criminal and warning Norway’s government that relations would suffer, even though the Nobel committee is an independent organization. That anger continued Tuesday at a regular Foreign Ministry news conference where spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said politicians in some countries were using the peace prize to attack China. “This is not only disrespect for China’s judicial system, but also puts a big question mark on their true intentions,” he said. He said that by supporting “the wrong decision of the Nobel committee, the Norwegian government has moved to hurt bilateral relations.” China has already abruptly canceled a meeting that had been scheduled for Wednesday between visiting Norwegian Fisheries Minister Lisbeth Berg-Hansen and her Chinese counterpart. Ma refused to answer questions on Liu Xia. Chinese authorities allowed the dissident and his wife a brief, tearful meeting in prison Sunday. But Liu Xia said she and many of her friends have been under tight watch in the days since Friday when the award was announced. Guards are posted outside her apartment in Beijing and she’s not allowed to receive visits from anyone, other than her two brothers.

Sarkozy faces showdown over retirement reform PARIS – Teachers, mail carriers, bus drivers and other French workers try to shut down France in a showdown with President Nicolas Sarkozy over his government’s attempt to raise the retirement age by two years to save money. The battle over the contested retirement reform has gone on for months, but this week could prove decisive. With the Senate expected to pass the pension reform bill by the end of the week, some unions have upped the ante by declaring open-ended strikes, meaning the walkout that begin on Tuesday could last for days or even weeks. Past walkouts lasted only one day. Train drivers launched an openended strike Monday night, and the work stoppages widened to other sectors on Tuesday. High school students were also joining the fray, with walkouts expected at hundreds of schools Tuesday. More than 200 street protests were planned throughout the country. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Philippine president seeks amnesty for mutineers Agence France Presse
MANILA – Philippine President Benigno Aquino on Tuesday said he had recommended amnesties for jailed soldiers who mounted three armed mutinies against his graft-tainted predecessor. The order, which still needs congressional approval, would free several jailed officers, including senator-elect Antonio Trillanes, who were involved in attempted mutinies from 2003 to 2007 against president Gloria Arroyo. “I signed it yesterday.... The process is there’s a proclamation (that) needs the concurrence of both chambers of congress then it becomes a law,” Aquino told reporters. He said Trillanes, who won election to Senate in 2007 while campaigning from jail, would be covered by the amnesty, allowing him to finally take his seat. Trillanes, a naval lieutenant at the time, was among a cabal of junior officers who led a group of soldiers in the first foiled mutiny attempt against Arroyo in 2003. The soldiers accused Arroyo and her top military officials of corruption and demanded reforms. Aquino’s spokesman Edwin Lacierda said the amnesty covered more than 300 officers and enlisted men, but many had already been freed except for a handful whose cases are still pending in court. “It shall extinguish any criminal liability for any acts committed therein,” Lacierda said. He said the mutineers’ civil and political rights, as well as their military benefits, would also be restored. But state prosecutors criticised the decision. “We are disappointed with the amnesty proclamation of the president absolving Trillanes et al for the
coup,” prosecutor Juan Pedro Navera said. “How do we explain to the witnesses (how) we have come to this?” Two other coup attempts rocked Arroyo’s regime, the last of which was in 2007, when rebel soldiers took over a luxury hotel in Manila’s financial quarter. Loyal troops rammed an armoured car into the hotel lobby and forced the mutineers to surrender amid a hail of gunfire and tear gas. Arroyo’s term ended this year and she was replaced by her arch-critic, Aquino, who won a landslide victory in the May election. Ex-Brigadier General Danilo Lim, who was involved in the hotel siege, said he had no regrets over what he did and claimed his men were soldiers who only wanted change in a corrupt government. “This is a recognition of the sacrifices of those who fought government oppression,” he said. The Philippines has a long history of military coups and those involved are often pardoned or given light penalties. JAKARTA - Money market analyst Irfan Kurniawan predicted that Bank Indonesia (BI/the central bank) will intervene in the domestic money market to stop the appreciation of the rupiah. The rupiah’s appreciation followed a report that Indonesia had been placed in the 19th position on the world economic map. The positive news could help strengthen the rupiah value but BI would intervene by releasing rupiah into the market and buy dollars which would also be supported
by profit taking by market players. Irfan who is also equity chief of PT First Asia Capital said the positive news could strengthen the rupiah to the level of Rp8,900 per US dollar. However, he said, BI feared the rupiah could actually reach the Rp8,900 level if it did not intervene in the market. He said BI feared that once the rupiah reached the Rp8,900 level it would a chance to strengthen even further. Moreover, the stock market was also developing positively and this
would more or less spur the upward trend in the rupiah’s exchange rate. JAKARTA - The government is studying the possibility of relocating the flood victims in Wasior, West Papua, Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare Agung Laksono said here on Monday. “The possibility (of relocating them) is still being studied,” he said. He said the effort was taken with regard to providing a safer place for them after recent flashfloods de-
stroyed the area. “The government will find the best and most secure place for them,” he said. He said the relocation process would later be put in a local regulation to prevent it from violating spatial regulations. “Today the government is already starting finding the best place for the Wasior flood victims,” he said. He said after the right place was found the people would be asked for
their opinion about the place to find common agreement. He said it was likely that the relocation would be in Rasiei in the southern area. Up to 145 have died according to the latest data because of the natural disaster while 185 others had sustained injuries. Wasior now needs heavy equipment to clean up the area and to find the still missing people. Agung said he could not confirm when the search would be stopped.
The Food and Drugs Monitoring Agency (BPOM) stated here on Monday that the instant noodle produced by PT. Indofood is still safe for consumption, while previously it was rejected in Taiwan as they said that the product contained nipagin (methyl p-hydroxybenzoate) as preservative. “A product evaluation had been conducted before being sold to the public, the nipagin contents in the noodle’s soy sauce is still within the acceptable level,” BPOM head Kustantinah said. She said that the soy sauce only contains 250 milligrams per kilogram of preservatives, which was still normal for consumption. According to the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) and risk study on additives, international terms had been used in the Indonesian Health Minister Regulation no 722 of 1988. “In noodle soy sauce, the maximum nipagin is limited to 250 milligrams per kilogram. In other food products besides meat, fish and poultry it reached 1,000 milligrams per kilogram,” she said. Canada and the US also set a maximum of nipaigin of 1,000 milligrams in food products, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam set 250 milligrams per kilogram in soy sauce products, and meanwhile Hong Kong set 550 as their maximum. “Therefore, Indonesian noodle is considered safe for consumption,” she said. The instant noodle has also been periodically evaluated in the market by BPOM, based on findings, no food were found with nipagin preservatives higher than required.

JIMBARAN - After counting for quite a long time, a world record of roasting satay had been broken in Bali with 101,010 satay sticks weighing a total of 1.5 tons. “We have receiced confirmation that a world record had been broken in Bali only a quarter of an hour ago,” Committee Chief Ariadi Abimanju said Monday night. Ariadi said that the delay in announcing the world record was caused by the need to make a confirmation. “We needed approval from London and New York where it was a holiday (Sunday) and due to the time differences,” he explained. NEW YORK - Europe’s Nordic countries remain global leaders in the campaign to close the gender equality gap, according to a study released Tuesday that said women could play a key role in leading the world out of economic crisis. Iceland, Norway and Finland topped the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual gender gap index, while Pakistan, Chad and Yemen were bottom of the 134-nation rankings. The report — which assesses how equitably income, resources and opportunities are distributed between the sexes — gave particular praise to the Philippines in Asia and Lesotho in Africa, which were both in the world top 10. The United States surged from 31st last year to 19th, while France dropped more than 25 places to 46th, mainly because of its “poor performance” in women’s political empowerment. “The evidence reveals that gender disparities in French politics remain persistent, despite legislation that mandates an equal number of men and women candidates on political party lists,” it said. Many of the world’s other top economies also lag. Japan is 94th and China 61st. Britain was unchanged in 15th place, but Germany fell for the fifth straight year to 13th. The report said Iceland had made new gains “because of an increase in the number of women ministers, a near gender-balanced parliament and the continued tenure of a female prime minister. The only blemish was “a significant difference between men’s and women’s salaries.” Nordic countries have some of the highest labor force participation rates in the world and lowest salary gaps while “women have abundant opportunities to rise to positions of leadership,” said the report.
Nordic countries have “higher and rising birth rates occurring simultaneously with high female workforce participation,” compared to other rich countries such as Germany, Japan, Italy and Spain where birth rates and participation are lower. “The Nordic experience points to fewer problems with aging in the future, as well as higher labor activity and a more robust economy.” The WEF said reducing the malefemale employment gap has been “an important driver of European economic growth in the last decade” and more efforts could help all developed countries as well as help tackle aging populations and mounting pension burdens. It said new research on the growing “power of the purse” showed how women will be among the drivers of post-crisis growth. Lesotho rose two places to eighth in the index. It had a top ranking for education and health and was the highest-ranked among the 134 countries on the economic participation subindex. New Zealand at fifth and the Philippines, at ninth, led the Asia-Pacific nations. “The Philippines is the only country in Asia this year to have closed the gender gap on both education and health, and is among only eight countries in the world to have done so.” The United States entered the index top 20 for the first time mainly because of education improvements, with women outstripping men in higher education. China fell one place to 61st, which the WEF blamed on lower scores on labor force participation, perceived wage equality and the lower number of reported births of girls.

BEIJING - China said Tuesday that reforming the yuan exchange rate did not equate to currency appreciation, as the country comes under growing international pressure for a stronger unit. The foreign exchange regulator made the remarks as it revised up the country’s current account surplus for the second quarter and first half, and vowed to maintain a “high-pressure crackdown” on hot money inflows. “Reform of the yuan exchange rate does not equate to appreciation,” the State Administration of Foreign Exchange said on its website. “Market players should... get used to the trend for two-way fluctuation in the yuan exchange rate.” The regulator said China’s current account surplus — the broadest measure of trade with the world — had risen 35 percent
in the second quarter to 72.9 billion dollars, up from its earlier estimate of 70.5 billion dollars. For the first half, the current account surplus was 126.5 billion dollars, down six percent from a year earlier and up from the earlier estimate of 124.2 billion dollars. China is under mounting pressure from US and European lawmakers to allow a strengthening of its currency, which critics claim is undervalued by as much as 40 percent, giving Chinese exporters an unfair advantage. Beijing has rejected the demands. Top leaders including Premier Wen Jiabao told European lawmakers last week that such an increase would destroy Chinese firms and lead to social upheaval by triggering widespread unemployment. China promised limited currency reforms in June, since when the yuan has appreciated around two percent against the dollar.

STOCKHOLM - Three labour market experts, including one blocked for a top post at the US Federal Reserve, won the 2010 Nobel Economics Prize Monday for research that has had an impact on employment reforms worldwide. The Nobel jury said the work of Peter Diamond and Dale Mortensen of the United States and British-Cypriot Christopher Pissarides helped resolve puzzles such as why people remained unemployed despite a large number of job openings. It lauded the three economists “for their analysis of markets with search frictions,” which helps explain how unemployment, job vacancies and wages are affected by regulation and economic policy. Such labor analysis was likely a primary factor in President Barack Obama’s decision early this year to nominate Diamond to one of seven seats on the Federal Reserve’s board of governors and its Federal Open Market Committee, which sets US interest rate policy. Diamond, 70, is widely considered a world authority on labor analysis. But Senator Richard Shelby, Republican of Alabama, blocked his nomination in August, saying he did not think his background was “ideally suited for monetary policy.” Speaking in Cambridge, Massachusetts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Diamond said Monday he still wanted to be considered for appointment to the Fed board of governors. “I am still hoping to get approved as a governor of the Fed... and working on all the

At the Paris-based Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, which groups the world’s leading industrialised states, labor economist Stefano Scarpetta said the trio’s research also suggested that that simply increasing compensation was not enough. “They show that you can improve the system if unemployment benefits are accompanied by sanctions for those who do not actively look for work as well as by policies that ease the transition back to work, such as training, counselling,” he said. Assistant professor of economics Amine Ouazad of the INSEAD business school near Paris said the laureates’ work “helps us to understand why an increase in wages gives an increase in employment, contrary to what might have been expected.” In other words, more workers are encouraged to look for work by higher wages. According to traditional theory, markets should work on their own to ensure that job seekers find available jobs.

Che Guevara’s private life revealed in intimate documentary Agence France Presse
BUENOS AIRES - A new documentary is casting fresh light on Argentine-born guerrilla Che Guevara, with an intimate look at the revolutionary’s life through newly-discovered images and writings. “It was very moving to hear Che Guevara’s voice reciting poems by Cesar Vallejo in a farewell message to my mother before he left for the Congo,” Che’s son Camilo told AFP shortly before the documentary was screened here. “I was three years old. I don’t remember anything from that farewell,” added Camilo, now 48, and whose eyes and beard resemble his father, even though he also wears his hair in a pony tail. He had arrived from Havana for the screening of “Che, un hombre nuevo” (Che, A New Man) in which his father’s voice can be heard reciting sad verses from Peruvian writer Cesar Vallejo and Chile’s Pablo Neruda in 1965. It was two years before Che Guevara’s death. Camilo, the third of Che’s five children, was accompanying the Argentine film director Tristan Bauer for the screening here, just after it opened in 333 theaters across Cuba. Che Guevara is recognized as a national hero in Havana for his role in a key 1958 battle in Santa Clara during the Cuban revolution. “There were lots of things that we hadn’t even suspected,” said Bauer. “That some documents could be kept secretly in Bolivia,
that a film on his private life could have been kept by his wife or that in 1965, in the middle of the Cold War, he could have written that the Soviet Union would head toward capitalism if it kept on its current path.” A major patron of Argentina’s public television, Bauer spent 12 years investigating Che’s life in Latin America, where he got obtained documents declassified by Bolivian President Evo Morales in 2008. They had been kept under seal as “state secrets” in the Central Bank’s coffers for 23 years. Notebooks, a journal and notes filled the Che folder. In a planner and a red spiral notebook, Che commented on his companions in arms and the guerrillas he led in southeastern Bolivia before the army caught him in a dramatic 1967 capture. He was summarily executed a day later, on October 9 when he was just 39. In another surprising find, Bauer’s researchers came upon a handwritten copy of the last letter Che wrote to Cuba’s Communist leader Fidel Castro as he left Cuba. The letter, which
Castro read in public in 1965, concluded with “Hasta la victoria, siempre” (Until victory, forever). Yet the original letter revealed that the now famous phrase was in fact incomplete, with the original saying instead: “Until victory, forever/always the homeland or death,” Bauer explained. The film also includes footage shot during Che’s childhood in Alta Gracia, a mountainous region of north-central Argentina where his family moved seeking fresh mountain air for “Ernestito,” who suffered from asthma. In other images shot in 1961, Che is seen meeting with his parents for the last time in Uruguay’s beachside resort town of Punta del Este. “This film comes at a critical time in Latin American history,” said Bauer, noting Che’s lasting impact on the region. His portrait still hangs in the Bolivian and Argentinan presidential palaces, while Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa often repeats the truncated phrase “Hasta la victoria, siempre.”

Fusionopolis and contain a data centre, a 100-seat theatre and retail outlets. US treats first patient with human embryonic stem cells Agence France Presse
WASHINGTON - US doctors have begun the first tests of human embryonic stem cells in patients, treating a man with spinal cord injuries in a landmark trial of the controversial process, the Geron Corporation said Monday. The patient began the pioneering treatment Friday with Geron’s GRNOPC1 human embryonic stem cells at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia, a spokeswoman for the hospital told AFP. She declined, however, to give more details, citing patient privacy. Preclinical studies of GRNOPC1 found human embryonic stem cells significantly improved locomotor activity of animals with spinal cord injuries when injected seven days after the injury. Participants in the human trials must be newly injured and receive a one-time injection of about two million GRNOPC1 cells, seven to 14 days after sustaining their injury. David Apple, Shepherd Center’s medical director, said the clinical trial, which seeks to establish whether GRNOPC1 is safe and tolerated in humans, was a key step forward in the search for a cure to paralysis after spinal cord injury. The Phase I trial — expected to last two years and involve an estimated 10 patients — comes just 11 years after Geron began working with human embryonic stem cells in 1999, when “many predicted that
it would be a number of decades before a cell therapy would be approved for human clinical trials,” Geron’s president and chief executive Thomas Okarma said in a statement. “Initiating the GRNOPC1 clinical trial is a milestone for the field of human embryonic stem cell-based therapies,” Okarma said. The ultimate goal is to inject GRNOPC1 cells into the spines of paralyzed human volunteers in the hope that this will prompt damaged nerve cells to regrow, enabling the patients to eventually recover feeling and movement. Every year, some 12,000 people in the United States sustain spinal cord injuries, usually in automobile accidents or from falls, gunshot wounds and sports. PARIS - A humpback whale has broken the world record for travel by any mammal, swimming at least 9,800 kilometres (6,125 miles) from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean in search of a mate, marine biologists reported on Wednesday. The female humpback was first photographed among a group of whales at a breeding ground on Abrolhos Bank, off Brazil’s southeastern coast, on August 7 1999. By sheer chance, it was photographed more than two years later, on September 21 2001 by a commercial whale-watching tour at a breeding ground near the Ile Sainte Marie off the eastern coast of Madagascar. The whale was identified thanks to the distinctive shape of its tail and a pattern of spots on it. “It is the longest documented movement by a mammal, about 400 kms (250 miles) longer than the longest seasonal migration that has been reported,” according to the research, headed by Peter Stevick of the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine. The trip is not just remarkable for the distance the whale covered, said Stevick. It also raises exciting questions about the breeding habits of humpbacks (Megaptera novaeangliae),
a species of which relatively little is known. Until now, it was thought that only males, rather than females, would be likely to wander such extreme distances in quest of a partner. Humpbacks are known to be longdistance swimmers, but until now their migration patterns were thought to be between northern and southerly latitudes. For instance, a whale might head to feeding area in a far southern latitude in the Atlantic, and then return to a tropical latitude in the Atlantic in order to breed. But this discovery suggests that humpbacks may also have a migratory pattern that straddles longitudes, not latitudes. In other words, they could swim east-west to breed. Further work is needed to investi-
gate such theories, as this is just a solitary sighting. But if more marathon humpbacks are found, it could lead to a rethink of the species’ genetic profile, which in turn has an impact on conservation. So far scientists have been able to identify seven distinct breeding stocks and several substocks of humpbacks in the Southern Hemisphere. Their perceived isolation and entrenched breeding habits raised fears of a restricted gene pool, which is bad news for a species. Humpbacks were driven close to extinction through over-hunting but are now staging a comeback.

SINGAPORE - Peter Lim, a sports-loving Singaporean billionaire, on Tuesday announced an increased offer of 360 million pounds (574 million US dollars) in cash for troubled English football club Liverpool. “I respect and admire Liverpool Football Club, which is steeped in tradition and history,” Lim said in a statement. “I am committed to rebuild the club so that it can soon regain its position at the pinnacle of English and European football, where it truly belongs. This is why I have stepped forward with this offer.” His offer is 20 percent higher than a US rival’s proposal of 300 million pounds that was accepted by the club’s management over a similar offer by Lim during an auction that ended last week. The decision to sell the club to
New England Sports Ventures, owners of the Boston Red Sox baseball team, is now being contested by Liverpool’s current American owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett. Lim’s offer values the club at 320 million pounds. A further 40 million pounds will be made available to purchase new players. The new offer is entirely in cash and will remove the entire acquisition debt of 200 million pounds taken on by the existing owners that has cast uncertainty over the club’s future, the statement said. Paraguay showed superior finishing skills against the All Whites to ensure there was no repeat of the drab 0-0 draw when the two sides last met in the group stages of the World Cup in South Africa. New Zealand, who finished with 10 men after defender Winston Reid was red-carded for an 89th minute challenge on Federico Santander, never looked like overturning the deficit after going two goals down in the first half hour. The result gave the South Americans the only win of their Asian tour after 1-0 losses to Australia and Japan and a 1-1 draw with China. The All Whites, missing skipper Ryan Nelsen and striker Shane Smeltz through injury, stood back early, wary of an opponent ranked 17th in the world. Paraguay’s Nelson Valdez, the record signing for La Liga side Hercules, attempted to take advantage with a number of long range shots but failed to trouble New Zealand keeper Mark Paston. BERLIN - Ukraine’s WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko will be beaten so badly next Saturday in Hamburg that he will be forced to retire, said American challenger Shannon Briggs on Monday. Briggs, the WBO champion from 2006-7 and with a record of 51 victories, with 45 inside the distance including a record 27 stopped in the first round, five defeats and one no contest, said that Vitali had made a bad choice in selecting him as his opponent. “I really feel for you,” the 38year-old said, addressing Klitschko at their joint press conference. “But you have made a bad choice: you are going to meet an adversary that you have never met before. I can hit, box and dodge my opponent’s punches.” Briggs, who claims he has shed nearly 40 kilogrammes for the bout — even going as far as tearing off his t-shirt to prove it, said that after he had dispensed with Vitali he would take on his younger brother Vladimir, the WBO and IBF world champion. “I have never prepared so well for a bout,” he said. “When I have finished with Vitali, they can bring on Vladimir immediately,” added Briggs, who
has challenged for the WBC belt before when he lost to Lennox Lewis in 1998. Klitschko tried to intervene on several occasions at the press conference but Briggs steadfastly refused to give way and the 39-year-old Ukrainian was only able to speak after the American - who has supplemented his income with supporting roles in several Hollywood films - had walked out of the room. “It is not easy to find an adversary for me or my brother. Shannon accepted immediately to fight me and I thank him for that,” said Klitschko, who has held the title since October 2008 on his return after a four year hiatus. “But when I hear him say he is going to propel me into retirement, that just makes me laugh. “I am ready and I am going to show that I deserve to wear this belt which has been worn by (Mike) Tyson, (Lennox) Lewis and Muhammad Ali,” added Klitschko, whose overall record stands at just two defeats in 42 bouts.

McLaren not worried about title bid McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh says his team will waste no time in worrying about its fading title hopes - and instead its focus will be on making improvements to its car to help it win the final three races of the season. With Red Bull Racing duo Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, plus Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, having edge clear in the title standings, McLaren needs a good response in Korea to get itself firmly back in contention.

Korean Grand Prix gets FIA go-ahead THE Korean Grand Prix will take place later this month after the FIA gave the circuit a green light on Tuesday following two days of safety inspections. Although the event has been surrounded by speculation for weeks that the venue would not be finished in time for the October 24 race, FIA race director Charlie Whiting was happy with the progress that had been made. Whiting told race officials that he had seen enough at the track to convince him that he will issue it with the mandatory circuit licence that it needs to host a Formula 1 race. In a statement issued by race organisers, Whiting said: “It is satisfactory, and I will issue the license through (ASN) KARA.” Race promoter Yung Cho Chung welcomed the FIA approval, and said he believed the grand prix would ignite huge interest in his country. “We are delighted that all works are now finished to the complete satisfaction of the FIA, and we join the whole of Korea in welcoming the Formula 1 fraternity to the Korea International Circuit for the first time,” he said. “The KIC has been constructed to the highest standards, and will become the epicentre of motorsport in the country. We believe the Korean Grand Prix will be the catalyst to ignite enormous interest in the sport across the nation.”
Aerial photographs of the track this week showed that the final layer of asphalt had been laid, but that much of the infrastructure around the venue was not yet totally complete. F1 teams said at the weekend that they expected the race to go ahead, even though F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has expressed some reservations about it in Singapore a fortnight ago. McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh said: “I think we have got
to respect the fact that a lot of money has been spent, and a lot of effort put in, and I am sure the Korean nation will ensure that there is a grand prix.” Mercedes GP team boss Ross Brawn said: “As far as we know, yes it will happen. The final surface has been laid and they are finishing off the kerbs and so on...I think the infrastructure will be a bit weak, but we want to race there and we need to do everything we can, as long as it is safe to race there.”

When asked by AUTOSPORT whether he feared the momentum was slipping out of McLaren’s title challenge, Whitmarsh said: “We don’t spend time worrying about it. You spend time doing things about it. The fact is we have to make sure that we are reliable, make sure we keep improving the car and do our best in the next few races.” McLaren plans to bring a new front wing for the next race in Korea, plus it is hoping that it will finally get to race its revised rear wing that was tried out in practice in Japan. “We will have a new front wing, plus hopefully the rear wing that didn’t have enough track time here we will have there,” said Whitmarsh. “There are a few things coming, so we will be throwing everything at the remaining three races. Until it can’t be done it is still at play and we will keep pushing. “We have got to just concentrate on what we can do; I cannot influence what the others do. We have to try and win the next few races and take it from there.” Whitmarsh was also confident that the gearbox issue that Hamilton’s suffered in the Japanese Grand Prix would not force him to make another change for Korea. “It was third gear and probably a dog – but it won’t be a problem for the next race,” he said. “We’ve taken the penalty for this weekend so we had a free gearbox change for the next race. “Lewis had to run from fourth to seventh, which was obviously hampering him. But he was managing it really well and kept calm after a fairly difficult weekend. “But we have seen how quickly Lewis can bounce back. He will bounce back strongly, and we will keep pushing.”
